The Fulminous Dragon is dead.

The cybernetic monster has been destroyed, and along with it, the Scavs' attempt to control the golden age tech of the universe-breaching gravity furnace. The xenos have retreated in ignominious defeat, and the Machine City is human territory once more. A coalition force of Knights and Mages has moved in, the Knights digging in to garrison the city against further xeno incursions while the Mages begin their study of the fascinating trove of technology found within. Meanwhile, your company withdraws back to home base for a well-deserved rest.

The Priests have already derived some fascinating theories from their remote readings of the information contained in the dragon's explosive death throes. They're collaborating with the Alchemist and the Blacksmith on interpreting the data to produce practical results, which has already led to significant improvements to the team's armor plating, synthfiber networks, and energy sources.

With the company's great feat comes both renown and change. The unit is hailed as heroes, and the dragon kill has massively boosted your stat numbers on the ongoing inter-company scoreboard. Glory, honor, bragging rights, whatever you call it, it's yours. The civilian settlements are abuzz with stories of the battle, and Freelancers from other companies clap you on the shoulder and congratulate you on a battle well fought. It feels good to remember your victory. But it's also hard to forget what the mission cost. Shimmer. Rook. Scorch. Names erased from the roster to be written on the memorial wall, along with the others. Faces never to be seen in the halls of Echo Base again. A small price to pay, perhaps, for the scale of your accomplishment. But a painful one nonetheless.

Major Stonebreaker, the battalion commanding officer, died leading from the front in the diversionary assault that kept the majority of Scav forces off your backs while fighting the dragon. So his position is vacant. The other company COs unanimously vote to promote The Captain to his position. That means she'll no longer be company commander, much to the chagrin of some of the veterans who have become used to her strong, self-assured presence. For now on she'll be giving orders from battalion headquarters, where she'll be in charge of deployments for the company along with the Murderhobos, Mysterious Strangers, and of course, the Rainbow Unicorns. "Kinda wish Snow had let those Thanes kill me," she grumbles after ending a comm with the Unicorns' CO.

Her chosen replacement to take up the mantle of company captain is Graves, to nobody's surprise. He gruffly rebukes any questions of reform. "If it was good enough for the Captain -- I mean, the Major -- it's good enough for me. Just do your jobs out there like you did before."

"Should we finally give ourselves a funny name?" Snow asks, deadpan but for a small wry quirk of the mouth. "How about Graves' Growlers? Or maybe The Graveful Dead?"

The company is given some time to rest, recover and rebuild after their harrowing but victorious raid. Days pass by without much to do except bullying the new recruits. Some Freelancers continue to train relentlessly in their off-time, not halting in their duties even for a moment. Others take full advantage of the rare opportunity for leisure, in company or solitude depending on their temperament. The sun shines on the fields of green grass around the base, and peaceful birdsong fills the air. One could almost believe for a moment that they weren't at war. Almost.

In the peaceful fields around the base, Smokes will practice lightly with his equipment. But primarily he will meditate looking up to the sky. He wasn't a Priest, but he had a strong faith in the satellites. Specifically, the one that oversaw the data of those that passed. After using the worm biology infused weapon he felt strange when looking at the dead. And as useful as the weapon was he wanted to commune with the Satellite as best he could away from the armory.

Dozer finally had time to introduce the Freelancers to an old Red Skin tradition. It was similar to the 'wrestling' as the humans had called it, but involved batons and knuckle dusters that were thrown into the ring by whoever was watching, if they so felt like it. The Winner is decided by tap out only. When Dozer used to do this with his clan, he wasn't too bad, only tapping out to his brothers and sisters, but here... the story was different...

Thoth rambles to anyone who'll listen about the fine art of wood carving, something Cillian picked up after he quit the force. He also produces a number of fine examples, shaped like staghs, from god-knows-where, gifting one each to every member of the company, claiming each time that it was 'just a few to his favourites'. He never worked up the nerve to actually give Snow hers in person though, so he just left one outside her door with a note. He made sure to put lots of smiley faces at the end of it.

Hiram, used to spending most of his time tinkering with his gear and only really talking to his squad mates under the affects of copious amounts of alcohol cut with paint thinner or being shot at, decides to spend most of his break walking around the base and attempting to have pleasant conversations with anyone who didn't look busy enough. Truly, a greater hell than fighting the Scavs.

Solaaris used the downtime to attempt to connect more with its sentimental side and to ameliorate its understanding of complex human emotions.
It did its best at writing a short poem:

Some more training is always needed : be it shooting, using the hammer or the jumppack. It can be fun too. Especially when it ends on top of a facility like this. A nice view .... and a good position for see some of the strange activities of the veterans. Perhaps is helmet could have taken some pictures of them. They where all filled with energy and joy, and with that distance no one could have object. ......

A Freelancer is powerful. Their growth in combat potential is incredibly rapid. But there are limits to just how much energy they can contain. At a certain point the rapid accumulation begins to spiral out of control. The grind of combat becomes too much for them to handle. And it's time for them to move on in some way.

After this mission, the Retirement rule will take effect.

When you reach level 10, it's time to begin a new phase of your life. Choose one of the following:

>Apprentice
Take on a young apprentice and teach them what you know. Create a second character at level 2, who knows one of your previous character's moves as their Legacy. You control both characters at once in battle, but only the apprentice gains levels. While you control two characters, they will have increased targeting priority due to your renown amongst the alien forces.
>Prestige Mode
Start again as a new class at level 1, retaining the starting power and one additional power from your previous class.
>Promotion
Become an NPC in the Freelancers setting. Choose one: Gain a promotion to NCO, specialist, or support staff for the company; return to your faction to work there as an officer, researcher, or other roles depending on your class; or fight solo and become a legend, striding off into the stories to fight the aliens on your own.
>Pasture
Your war wounds or Infusion mutations have become severe enough to force your retirement, or perhaps you've just had enough of war. Hang up your blade and gun, and leave the fight behind, bringing with you only a collection of scars and a handful of medals. Attempt to live life as an ordinary person, and perhaps even find some form of happiness. Of course, at some point in the future, you might be persuaded to come out of retirement for one last job.

After a week of off-time, the base stirs to life like engine switched on. There's news of action. At first the team is wondering if this means they're going onto the front lines again, but soon Graves tells the company that he's booked an Arena for a match. "Because it'll keep you lot in fighting shape," he says when pressed for his reasoning. "The Arenas are a place you can temper yourselves, push each other to become better. Can't ask for a better challenge to keep your skills up. Plus you might even enjoy yourselves."

Everyone knows about the Arenas, even civvies. Isolated, hidden locations, often beyond the frontiers of alliance territory. Ruined cities, shadowed canyons, abandoned xeno strongholds. Now turned into fields for gladiator bloodsports where Freelancers run live-fire exercises against each other, honing their skills in combat and familiarizing themselves with potential battlegrounds. Ostensibly for training purposes, the competition often gets heated, and sometimes the matches are even beamed as live entertainment to faction holdings, Freelancer bases, and even civilian settlements. Everybody's seen matches played out on the screens between famous warriors. The Seven Swords against Enigma Praxis at Twilight Tower. The Merry Fellows against Edge of Darkness in the Grand Garden. And now it's your turn. The newly famous dragonslayers in an intrasquad match. This should be interesting.

Smokes and Phaws have been registered as team captains, heading Red Team and Blue Team respectively against each other. This much is known. But there's more. A rumor is going around that Graves has set it up this way to determine who gets the promotion to his old spot as commander of section one. He'll be watching this match closely to evaluate their command skills, or so the rumor says, and whoever's team wins will be the new section commander. Everybody heard it from somebody else, nobody knows if there's any truth to it.

"Section command?" Phaws says, incredulous. "I can barely command myself not to chew on interesting looking alien fungal blooms! Impossible. If I were promoted I would know that hyper-reality beam had punched me into the next universe and this, THIS, was incontrovertible proof."

"Take Graves' old spot? Mmm." Smokes mutters, and coughs, emitting small clouds of grey smog. "Not my thing. Too big. Squad leader is fine. Section? No thanks. I mean, if they ask me. Maybe. But it won't happen."

"Who gave you that idea?" Graves asks, angry. "Get the hell outta here and go get ready for the match. As if I don't have enough to do without listening to this."

Somebody needs to replace Graves. But if not Smokes or Phaws, then who?

Leopard? Too focused on the hunt for anything else. Dawn? Kind and helpful, certainly, but no-one would call her brave. Thoth's too unstable. Snow's too antisocial. The only one who even wants the job in the first place is Gryphon, and despite her loud and repeated insistences, that's not happening anytime soon.

Of course, Graves could always promote somebody from the second section and move them over here. Everyone knows the members of section two, sure, even if they're usually out on other assignments. They're usually kept under-strength to make sure section one is ready to handle whatever crazy shit is coming their way, and in the meantime handle garrison duties and secondary objectives. They don't get thrown into the meat grinder on a regular basis like section one, which results in fewer opportunities for glorious renown or horrible death. But they still see their fair share of action. You found out after the citadel assault that they got hit hard while playing rearguard for your attack. Word has it that two of them were cut in half in one swing of a Thane's axe. The berserking Thane was only stopped when the section two commander took him on 1v1, and came out on top.

So in addition to fighting in front of a live audience, there's the ongoing question of who will be the next section command. No pressure or anything, though.

"All right, so where are we headed?" asks someone.

"Funny you should ask that," Graves says. "Let's say that it's a place you'll get a new perspective on things."

They wanted her to be a what? To (maybe) determine the (possibility of) doing what? And this was meant to happen where? After being teamed up with who? And why was there always three socks post-wash when you started with one? Questions!

Phaws ran shaking hands over the soft, comforting cloth of her stained, scorched and acid-marked ruffle. She had worn it since the base defence. Tried to be better. The Unicorns, inspiring, arriving right on time to save everyone. Something worth modelling. In the rumbling, shifting shuttle hurtling towards a geosynchronous orbit blood sport arena, thoughts of them fighting off worms were hard to hold on to. It seemed long ago, vivid blood smears fading the maybe-possible of reconstructed memory. And the ruffle was just cloth, half tearing from old sprays of chemical and odder flits of ash and acid. Phaws wrapped a thread around her finger, pulled it, winced as something else split. Maybe holding on to old garments forever just wasn't how it worked. Suppose you could only take so many close-range blasts, crack that many ribs. Treads started fraying. Maybe you woke up one fine grey-mist morning and decided drinking half a gallon of base brew rotgut was a bad way to start the day. Started carrying a medkit, hearing Diplomat's voice when you restocked it.

She'd run out of table for the Can Cathedral after the fifth new wing and the twisted dragon-scalespire. But then there hadn't been a new can for a while. Had started needing the almost-focus of not-quite-sobriety. And what did it mean, anyway, then the Thralls screamed? It--

" Oh Sats, " said the alternative slipstream hallucinatory version of herself currently doing a handstand on Rector's knees.

Their success rate is 100%," she coughs and mumbles something that might be "rounded up," then smiles kindly. "So rest assured you have absolutely nothing to worry about! On the arena floor, when you would otherwise take a fatal wound, our casters will preserve your life and transmat you from the battlefield. After a short time in the respawn zone, they will send you back to your team's starting position with full health, armor, and shielding. They will also fully recharge exactly one item or power of your choice. Do not ask for more than one or you may find your stay in the respawn zone ... extended." The smile intensifies. "We hope you find your games at Starsong pleasant and exciting!"

Dirtnap and the new recruit Fortune are transmatted into the arena on Red and Blue spawns, respectively. "And we've already got reinforcements activating! Another Drifter for each team brings some extra firepower to the field. Things are about to heat up out there!"

With a crackle of red lightning, another contender appeared on the battlefield, arms spread wide as Dirtnap soaked up the attention of the televised audience. Completing a quick spin, the red streamers tied to the sleeves of his jackets rippling along with the motion, he picked a camera at random before drawing a finger-gun at one of the orbitting cameras and pantomiming shooting it out of the sky.

"Copy that Solaaris, adjusting comm frequency now. Apparently it's not a mission until this helmet fritzes out on me." he said, punching the side of his helmet for emphasis. "Moving to support Flare."

Dirtnap clicked his heels together, red lights along the soles of his Phase Boots sequencing up and following the grooves up to his calf, leaning into a run as the kinetic accellerators as he burst into a sprint. The twitchy, stutter-stepping motion he'd had on his inaugural mission had already smoothed out into something sure and powerful as his scarf fluttered in the wind of his motion. This wasn't the time for shooting, his late start meant he had to make up some distance.

Dashing through the open space along the back of the arena, Dirtnap unlatched a shield from it's carrying spot on his back, locking his arm and holding it in front of him to serve in lieu of a shield. With his other arm, he unslung a shotgun, a heavy drum of ammunition fed into it, caustic green light shining through the grooves in the gun's frame to betray it's enchantment. On the last mission, Dirtnap had geared himself up as a light skirmisher. Here, in the arena, with the eyes of the unimbued watching, it seemed like he'd decided to come ready for a brawl instead.

The Magitech in his armour was still buzzing after Thoth had overcharged it. Looking across to the platform overlooking the middle point, he watched as a lonely priest gets blasted with mana. Dirtnap grit his teeth as he watched Flare's grappling hook snap her up towards the scoring platform. The echoing shapes of his Mirror Images might give him the appearance of a small squad ascending, but Leopard was sharper than the average Scav. He was going to want support of a more material sort up there.

The sweet kick of the Nanomachines boosting his performance hit him like a wave of euphoria, stored oxygen hitting the bloodstream, a tingle in his scalp and down his spine telling him his synaptic accelerators were online, the red lights embedded in his armor streaked behind him as he thundered up the ramp. Once there, however, the platform appeared empty. The scoring panel was still lit though, the Hunter would be close.

"Come on out, Spots." he said, sweeping his shotgun across the panel, checking for movement, "The folks at home are expecting a show, and I'm not one to disappoint."

"Oooh! And over half of Blue Team has been blasted into respawn limbo! They're having a rough go of it out there, Sally."

"That they are, Braddock. With Red firmly in control of the center, a Hunter taking down the enemy back lines, and a Drifter hunkered down in a sniping position, Blue Team is going to have to re-organize and battle back soon."

"Good thing our completely, utterly, absolutely fair and balanced arena has its own ways of compensating for such things. It's time for things to heat up out there! Let me hear you, arena fans!"

The crowd chants. WALL! WALL! WALL! The chants become cheers up as an orange force field sizzles into being around the edge of the arena, and begins to slowly contract. The fields snap and hiss as they pass over the terrain of the arena. They're passable, but going into the orange zone clearly would be extremely painful for you.

In addition to this, several hatches open in the floor of the arena, and from each a dais rises, bearing ... something?

"Red Team," Corax transmits. "A strange rainbow-colored box has materialized next to my position. Please advise."

"It's an item box," Solaaris replies, wise in the ways of Priest cults. "According to legend, they were ritual objects from the first virtual entertainment systems on Old Earth."

"What do we do with them?" Raiden asks. "How do we use them to kill things?"

Typical Hunter, Solaaris thinks. "Open it up and use whatever's inside," he says out loud. "The box has a fabmat that prints a random item on the spot. Problem for us is, if I remember the Arena system's hidden rulesheet correctly--"

"Hidden rules?" Dozer asks sourly. "Ain't they supposed to explain this shit to us BEFORE the match?"

"The place is run by Priests, remember?" Raiden says.

"Point taken."

"As I was saying," Solaaris continues, feeling something akin to irritation. "The farther a team is behind, the higher their chances of finding something incredibly dangerous. As we are currently in the lead, that is to our disadvantage. Whatever blue team loots, beware."

Fortune, dear, maybe it would be possible to use that sniper rifle of yours to fire at targets to pin them down.

When you spend multiple actions staying down in cover while possessed of a weapon that has enough range to outshoot the arena you’re making a minor mistep, okay? And trying to dip into cover does nothing when you fight people that can get you out of it with grenades and other things that won’t miss. Its literally wasting your actual time and, what with this being a bit of a team-slug fest, therefore also the time of the team.

"Red Team is racking up quite a lead," calls the announcer. "But with a wave of respawns about to hit the field and an item box on their side, it could be that -- what the hell? Uhh -- okay, hold on a second, folks." The broadcast mic clicks off.

In the station control room, the announcer android Braddock-9 swivels with some annoyance. "Do you harpies mind?" He barks at the cluster of Priests whispering urgently to each other and gesturing at their wrist-mounted holo-screens. "Some of us are trying to work here! Why are you interrupting us?"

Sally Two-Shot knows trouble when she sees it. "What's wrong?"

"Very strange readings," one of the Priest says, concerned. "Very strange. Outside. Heading towards us."

"Blowback from the southern aurora," a second Priest insists. "Nothing to worry about."

"Any anomaly," the senior Priest states with finality. "Is something to worry about. We are not Mages. Unusual spacetime phenomena are not curiosities. They are dangers. Sound the alert."

[Retribution has come, foolish humans!] a Dragonpriest announces in Scavspeak, standing at the center of the group with an energy lance held high. [Did you think you could strike down our lord and god, he of the hallowed fulminations, and escape without vengeance? Now you will -- uhhh -- wait, hold on --] The Dragonpriest pauses as Flare guns down a thrall next to him. He hesistates, looking around at the heavily armed Freelancers everywhere. As more anomalies appeared on his HUD, he glanced wistfully back at the red control point ... The Wall was going to roll over it soon, and with the northern ramp blown out he already didn't have a way back up. He mourned for his opportunity to throw some sick dance moves in the scoring zone, but, the sweet promise of impending carnage tugged at his heart strings.
