Everwood Civ Thread #16

Welcome to Everwood Civ! In this game you shall take control of a fledgling nation as you attempt to navigate the dangerous world of Everwood! In this world dominated by dark woods filled with wonder and terror will you be able to guide your civilization into prosperity or ruin?

---

The journey back from the Profane Fortress is as bitter as the march there was and by the end only 1/3 of the men who entered the Everwood ever return! However the Holy Tide has been a great success with the Staff of the Archmage being taken and thrown of the Cliff and into the domain of Galoris. In the next few days a great black tower has seemingly grown from the earth and now towers over Loslina, some say at times it crackles with strange purple energy.

In other new an emissary from the Eagle Princedom has arrived with an offer to allow us to trade again if we remove our tariffs on their goods.

In local news Esau Shinebringer has returned from the Everwood piloting a massive Knight Class Erulian Titan called Mannjager.

H has been chosen, instead of seeking new trading opportunities in the North and East.

At the moment your only trading partner in the East in the United Heavenly Kingdoms which you have a fairly healthy exchange of luxury goods with as your jewelry is highly prized along with sugar, tobacco and wine. In exchange they mostly send over jade, silk and amber.

The Golden Empire however does not actually condone trade seeing it as beneath them however they will accept "tribute" in exchange for "gifts" from them.

The northern lands of Thule ruled by the Iron King see almost no trade being a completely untapped but hostile market. The Iron King however is open to the idea of trade if you pay him two wealth per year.

How will you seek to increase trade with these partners? Currently there are moderate tariffs on all outside goods and extremely high tariffs on spices.

The whole idea of giving tribute to a lesser state leaves a bad taste in the mouths of many but most are still riding high of the success of the Holy Tide! The lowering of tariffs has also increased trade quite abit but much to the complaint of mine owners, smiths and pottery makers in your empire causing with the city of Neas Hope being hit the hardest by the lower of prices by the dirt cheap exports of the Kingdom of Bartus. Crime has increased heavily in the city with attacks against Bartians traders being high.

In local news through some complex political shenanigans the Senate of Samir has voted itself out of existence being replaced with two Lordships for the Agossos and Everwood families.

Across the Empire smaller deposits of iron, copper and tin are found all over with more advanced techniques of Bartian prospectors being employed to find them. The largest finds are on the untapped Island of Dragon’s Graveyard with gold, iron, coal, sapphires, rubies, lead, amethyst, emeralds and even a deposit of a strange red metal referred to simply as Dragon’s Blood. This has caused a rush of people moving to the large island seeking land and wealth.

In local news the city of Neas Hope has been wracked by violence the dirt roads of the city becoming paved with blood as the two legions sent in by the Overlord have only amplified the discontentment. Protest among iron workers have also spread to Olamir, Loslina, Samir and Bloodsoil!

With high tariffs being placed on the Bartian imports and the opening of trade with the Eagles, Guillen, the Moonlord and Free Clans things being to stabilize. Profits for merchants once again soar and Neas Hope returns to being the productive heart of the Empire. However relations have soured with Bartian and few traders even bother to venture up from the underground kingdom.

In a recent speech by Esau Shinebring denouncing the Eagle Princedom many people are unsure whether bowing to their demands was the right thing to do

The craft of Glassworking had taken hold of Neas Hope during the last troublesome years as one of the few industries unaffected by the trade troubles. This has caused many families to invest into this stable profession and thus causing the art to explode. Vases, cups and bowls of glass are becoming common sights at the tables of our nobles and are imported heavily in the East. It seems in the Eastern cultures glass represents purity of mind and soul with them even having a technique to temporarily imbue mana inside of it.

The Great Hall of Dragons

A great structure built under the instructions of the Zuma family, where the dragons would have been able to hatch their eggs and be trained by their riders; The Symbols of the Neas and the Empire where sculpted, instead inside paintings of the city life and the legions victories where made. Plenty of other statues of heroes and valiant veterans of the city would have been erect on the inside, alongside a great one of Galoris, near all the statues of the lords of silverwood. Even the so-called "stained glass windows" would have been used in the structure, giving the possibility to use their art even to our new craftsmen.

the first dragon cubs would be presented to the population, hopefully making them understand that the clan had an additional weapon to protect them.

The first is that you have no clue what material was used that allowed them to enchant the black wood of the ship, secondly your craftsmen lack the skill to properly replicate the design with the shipyards of Haswod hogging all the best shipbuilders and lastly the ship seems to dislike being studies with several of the researchers being killed aboard through suspicious accidents.

Research is put into the art of spellcrafting with the mages of the Academy being finally scrutinized for making no advancements for a long time. It is a pair of married mages that make a discovery that changes things by discovering the ability to create a bond between souls. This allows a mage to connect their soul to that of a non-mage and drain their magical reserves to power their own spells. However this is fairly dangerous as mages do not have a direct way of feeling how much mana is left inside a persons soul as they do with their own.

In general weaves are also becoming more powerful and complex with protection spells growing in complexity as too many remember the tragedy of the Profane Fortress.

In other news Shem has begun investing large amounts of the royal treasury in fixing up the Pygmy islands under his control.

The Bartians are happy to agree to a secret alliance to invade Belinlos the following year. It is however when the massive shipments of weapons start coming to the surface that things go completely wrong! The miners, smiths and other metal workers rise up in massive protests and riots seeing this as an effort by the council to ignore the tariffs that protect their industries from the cheap goods of the Mole Men! It is when Emperor Shem returns from the Black Tower to see this horrible reaction that he begins to set out fixing things. He orders the Council disbanded for the rest of the year and takes complete control over the Empire commanding the stop of the arms shipments and puts the industry back to proper work churning out massive amounts of armaments.

It is on the eve of Year 143 that Emperor Shem summons the lords and councillors.

“We go to war, let me see your plans.”

What will you propose?
>>
Alright.

There will be three attacks on Belinos. First, the Bartians will attack in the underground and will hopefully force Belinos into sending large numbers of their army to defend their interests there. Then, our armies will be split into two. The majority of them will do a naval invasion much like last time, while the continental legions will go and besiege the fort north of Bloodsoil.

There is a possibility of calling upon the pygmy horde again. Though it will take some time for them to arrive and I wish not to delay the invasion for too long.

Forces:
Sea Invasion:
50 Quadriremes
Bal
Stormseer
Sea Reaver
12 Legions
600 Marines
Balistas
Catapults(if possible)
Land front
2 Continental Legions

However the naval invasion flounders with a failed assault on the gatehouse competely giving away your assault. The army establishes siege lines around the city but have no real clue of the numbers within it or of any armies still in the countryside. The siege encampments are going well with earthworks and palisades. The Warlocks support both Vidella and Maelstrom in their efforts to crack open the walls. While they can do some impressive damage the mages within the city are constantly using earth magic to repair the walls.

The scouts return to report an army of 5,000 marching from Karishold and an army of 5,000 marching from the Everwood border.

What will you do?

Have the army march on the approaching forces from Karlshold, aiming to take the fort there if they retreat, and face them in open battle if they do not. Mannjaeger should act as a rearguard, warding off any forces from the city, while Vidella and Maelstrom lead the way towards the enemy’s stronghold. A women with white hair emerges on the ramparts!

The castle of Karishold is looking rough, the massive sections of wall destroyed by Mannjager are only partially repaired and huge sections of the fortification have completely slagged by dragonfire. New trenches are built and everyone is dug in as possible to stop the army of Belinlos.

The army of Belinlos soon appears on the field 15,000 men backed by siege equipment, tuskets, three champions, the Speaker of Tarrex and the Patriarch himself. This will be a true battle for the ages.

Do you have special plans for this battle and any tactics you wish to employ?

The Crabs are quickly moved into formation acting as living fortifications that the pygmies can hide under and behind. Lead by the colossus Crabsus the Knights are torn to spreads by the massive pincers of the crabs with their great beasts scratching futilely at the rock hard armor of the crabs. The dragons Maelstrom and Vidella seem to be almost dancing in the air as they scour the grounds with their fire breathes cutting off any avenue of retreat the cavalry would have! The days is your but at what cost, in the end a total of 10,000 men are dead along with near 40,000 pygmies. Equipment and supplies have been all but exhausted and the great dragon Maelstrom is injured. It is not shortly after that a messenger arrives from Belinlos offering to cede everything beyond the city itself to you and end this war.

A. Agree to these terms

The Overlord has spoken and there will be no peace, Shem doesn't think this is a good idea but respects the wishes of Leon.

You march what remains of your army back to Belinlos sending scouts out across the country. The scouts quickly report that beyond some serfs pretty much the entire country has retreated into the city.

You also finally get a report from the Bartians stating they have taken massive loses and currently holding ground.

What will you do?
>>
>>3567452
Put Belinos city under siege. We'll starve them until they submit.
>>
>>3567452
Encircle the city of Belinlos by land and sea and dig in for a long wait as we try to starve out the city. Any serfs that want to retreat to the safety of Belinlos will be given safe access.

Underground, the 4 legions sent as reinforcements will be sent in to assault the belinlos territory there along with the Bartians.

Oh, and we should try to siphon mana from the earthwork walls with the rainbow stone or draining weaves.
>>
>>3567459
The four legions sent to help the Bartians have sent back truly terrible news. The armies of Bartia are just terrible, they lack cohesion, have almost no training and no formal system of leadership. They have been beaten back multiple times and your Legions seem to be the only thing holding them in the war at all.

Your siege of Belinlos goes just about as expect, you set up camps and begin to barrage the massive stone walls. Draining weaves do nothing to the walls at wall and Yoresh does not allow you to use his stone. It has been one month since the battle.

What shall you do now?
>>
>>3567477
Seize Yoresh’s stone and use it on the walls, compensate him when he apologizes for being a coward.
>>
>>3567477
Get some fresh hot Umbran pizza
>>
>>3567481
Smh fine fine sorry for being a coward

Send it up with like a Tortoise or protect the bearer with magic or something so the guy carrying the stone actually makes it to the walls and doesn't get shot halfway through
>>
>>3567477
Begin to shell the city itself with any ammunition we have at hand. Dragonfire, stones, whatever.

The underground legions will do everything in their power to train and uplift the bartians to take the belinlos stronghold underground

If yoresh wants to use his rainbow stone he can
>>
>>3567477
Have some people to better organize the bartian forces while were down there.
>>
>>3567486
>>3567482
>>3567481

After a hearty feast of Umbran pizza you head out under the protection of a shield tortoise to touch the stone to the walls. As you touch the wall with the stone the rock itself slowly becomes hotter and hotter till you are forced to drop it as to not burn your hands. It seems there is too much mana inside these walls for the stone to properly drain.

What will you do now?
>>
>>3567495
Begin to shell the city itself with any ammunition we have at hand. Dragonfire, stones, whatever.

Julia Isaacs paints several fine paintings of the city that are generating quite a fervor back in the Imperial court. It seems painting will likely be the next craze among the nobles.

Shelling of the city works well enough for the first couple weeks but in time they adapt and you can tell even dragonfire has become less effective against whatever they are doing within the city.

In the underground it seems the Bartian people loathe central authority and refuse to listen to your commands. Bartus himself shrugs saying he can't force people to accept training, they are all free men after all. It has been three months since the start of this siege.

What will you do?

I mean what did the Lightwatchers ever do for us?
The bartian peoples front says
"If we, not me tho Im the leader, take some training from friendly Blackstone mercs of how to fight then we wont die so much.

If we dont die so much, we can celebrate even more when we win. Youre all free to do whatever, but wouldnt you want to celebrate?

Thats what I would do, but of course not me, you I mean."

Annoyed and tired of this whole affair the Overlord has accepted the deal put forth by the Belinlos taking all territory save for the city itself. Relations with the Bartians have also soured even more as they consider your people much too bossy.

However the Empire itself is ecstatic seeing only a massive victory over the hated Tarrex! As pioneered by Julia Isaacs painting has taken over the noble courts with paintings becoming slowly more common than busts. A most interesting development has come however from Teris a strange new dance dubbed the waltz inspired by the flowing footwork forms of the Harvesting Blade style.

You set about colonizing the new land but find quickly that Tarrex has had the last laugh. Corruption seeps out from the walls of Belinlos leaving the land useless and infertile. Only two mines one of copper and one of tin are found within your new territories. The city of Karishold once repaired is the only place that any sane person seems to want to live in these new lands. People would much rather move to the colder but more prosperous Dragon’s Graveyard.

In linked news the merchants and commonfolk have begun to complain about the Seastorms clan’s strict rules about settlement on Dragon’s Graveyard. Much of the best land has dragon bones resting on it and the rules that they may not be distrubed is hampering development!

It is the smith Pere Yoresh that manages to figure out how the regrowing metal on the Titan Mannjager works. It seems to be crafted from a Tanverite-Steel alloy which makes it strong and incredibly good for enchanting. The only known source of this metal is far away in the Lands of Thule in the domain of the Iron King. As for the regeneration he believes that due to the spirit Lavis’ connection to the Titan the spirit is feeding the metal mana to repair itself. The runes to do such a thing however are much too complex for your current level of understanding.
