In the far future, biotechnology advances by leaps and bounds, creating stunning achievements in medical, civil, and military applications. Illness becomes a thing of the past, and genetic modification is as commonplace as cosmetic surgery.

However, like all great advances, unchecked progress and experimentation has led to abuse and corruption. Ultra powerful megacorporations that monopolized the latest biotech have risen to be the great powers of the age, waging secret wars of sabotage, espionage, and deceit to get ahead of each other.

In order to fuel their rampant growth, megacorps develop lethal diseases and viruses, horrific bio-organic abominations, and ever more exotic genetic modifications to both sell to the highest bidder and unleash upon each other.

The rampant proliferation of bioweapons, and the need to contain them, has given rise to a new profession, the BIOWEAPON HUNTER.

You are LEWIS, a Hunter specializing in hunting down biological threats with your T-Doll companion HK!

Currently, you were with Lucina as you were both going through the factory's armory, looking to see if there was anything useful you could bring.

"You know, for a mad scientist, your mom's armory seems to be pretty... mundane." You frown as you inspect the racks of weapons. Sure, there was everything you would expect. But it all just seemed so... normal.

"I'm a bit surprised, too." Lucina admits. "But then again, my mom's special projects have always been... finicky."

"Is that so?" You say as you further inspect the offerings. Well, you at least still had the Harkonnen heavy rifle that HK had brought. "Think she'd loan anything to us?"

"That depends if you're willing to ask her." Lucina shrugs.

"Doesn't hurt to try." You reply, glancing at all of the stocked weapons around you.

"Right, let me call her over." Lucina nods.

"That won't be necessary." Auntie Egan says coolly as she strides into the armory, her hands casually tucked into the pockets of her lab coat. "I figured you'd want access to something a bit more... exotic."

"Were you spying on us?" You raise an eyebrow.

"No, I just know you're not all that different from your mother." Egan replies simply. "I can provide some assistance to you, but I'll need a favor in return."

"We're trying to clear Lewis' name and you want a favor?!" Lucina gapes.

"This technology is highly experimental and it would be incredibly inconvenient if it were to be destroyed or fall into the hands of others." Auntie Egan narrows her eyes ever so slightly. "A risk like that deserves a benefit."

"All right, so what errand do you want us to do, then?" You ask, deciding to humor her.

"I want you bring SOPMOD back to me. Or at the very least, her telemetry data." Egan says.

"You can't be serious." Lucina blinks.

"I'm always serious when it comes to my work." Auntie Egan responds in a deadpan manner. "SOPMOD's experiences are necessary to complete my A2 project, and Umbrella hasn't exactly been returning my calls."

"Ah, I get it." Lucina grumbles. "Always some secondary motivation with you."

"How about some armor?" You suggest.

"Hm, I may have some items that may work." Egan nods.

ADAMANTIUM WEAVE: Through some secret proprietary process, adamantium is extruded into fibers and woven in an extremely light yet extremely durable armor. Will provide protection against virtually all hazards with minimal impact to mobility.

THERMOPTIC CLOAK: A cloak made from a nanomaterial with light altering properties, the thermoptic cloak is able to bend light around the wearer, giving the impression that they are invisible and making them difficult to spot visually.

CRYSTAL PLATE: Created from crystal pried off the hull of a captured Companion starship, this crystal plate is extremely dense and near indestructible. It also appears to enhance the latent magical abilities of the wearer. However, the plate is extremely heavy and should be worn with caution.

"What do you have for knocking stuff down?" You ask Egan as you hold the crystal plate in your hands, testing its weight. Didn't feel too bad right now, though it felt oddly warm to the touch.

"Ah, we have a few things." Egan nods to another table. "This was originally meant to arm T-Dolls with, but regular people should be able to handle them as well."

GOO GUN MK2: An improvement over the previous generation of goo gun, in addition to general increases in range, accuracy, and stability, the proprietary paralytic contained in every goo round also has the capability to short out T-Dolls and other electronics.

GAUSS RIFLE: An assault rifle that fires projectiles via electromagnetic force rather than chemical propellant, the gauss rifle is a relatively silent yet deadly weapon that can fire rounds at high velocity. However, it requires a constant power source to function, making it more effective in the hands of a T-Doll.

POWER FIST: A heavily modified exo-arm with an armored gauntlet, not only does this fist enable high strength impacts, but also contains a capacitor that discharges a powerful burst of electricity upon contact.

"Lewis, I have a query." HK speaks up.

"Yeah? What is it?" You turn to her.

"Do you have any suggestions for my loadout?" HK asks. "I brought the Harkonnen heavy rifle and Typhoon grenade launcher system with me, but considering the nature of this mission, such large and loud weaponry may not be ideal."

"Forget it, it's not that important." You shake your head. "Come on let's get geared up."

"Affirmative." HK nods.

It takes you a few minutes to get changed into your typical 'fighting' clothes. However, this time, you insert the crystal plate into your vest like you would a normal ceramic plate. The crystal plate continues to exude a soft warmth which actually feels... pretty pleasant, actually. However, besides, this sensation, you can't really sense any difference in your powers. Maybe it'll become more evident once you actually need to start using them.

You and HK head out to meet up with Lucina and notice that instead of wearing her normal police gear, Lucina was this time wearing something a little more... form fitting. It looked to be an almost skintight, one piece outfit that clung to her body, showing every curve she had.

"Hm? I something wrong, Lewis?" Lucina blinks when she notices you.

"Looking good there, Lucina." You grin .

"Why thank you, Lewis." Lucina nods, not realizing what you were trying to hint at. She clips on a utility belt and holsters the goo gun.

And just like that, you are once again whisked away by helicopter as you are taken to Ashford's remote compound all the way out in the countryside. The ride there is relatively quiet, as you and Lucina focus on mentally preparing yourselves for one of the most dangerous missions in your lives, while HK and ST-AR were never quite the most talkative people to start with.

Finally you're dropped off in the middle of a dark forest, well away from Ashford's compound. The helicopter simply couldn't risk getting any closer without risk of begin detected.

"Yeah, we all go into the compound together." You nod. "But uh, how do we actually get into THAT."

You point to the Ashford Estate, which resembled more of a medieval castle than a mansion, with high, thick stone walls reaching high up into the sky. It certainly looked far more intimidating than it did from the pictures.

And even from here, you could tell the perimeter was being aggressively patrolled by a combination of BOWs, regular troops, and drones. Fortunately, on the BOW front, it wasn't more than a couple of Hunters lurking in front of the lake in front of the castle.

"So what is our point of entry?" HK asks as she kneels next to you and Lucina. "My sensors don't detect any structural weaknesses."

"We can try scaling the wall and get in through the roof." Lucina suggests. "It will be dark enough that they shouldn't be able to see us."

"They have to have some kind of escape passage." ST-AR points out. "Me and HK can scour the perimeter and try to sniff something out."

"Or... we can just go through the back door?" HK wonders, pointing towards a rather large and relatively unguarded set of doors at the rear of the castle.

"Sometimes the most direct path is the easiest." You nod. "Besides, it doesn't look like they're expecting anybody to approach that way."

"Well, we still have to penetrate their perimeter defenses first." Lucina sighs. "Right now, we seem to be limited by two paths of approach, the forest or the lake."

Lucina points down toward the castle, where the lake was easy enough to see, while there was a large stretch of trees extending from the forest right up to the castle. In an actual security situation, those trees would have been completely cleared, but you suppose that a bunch of rich execs like the Ashford's didn't particularly care.

"Doesn't look like they have much security infrastructure set up along the shore, but we'd have to deal with Hunters and whatever else may be hiding in the water." Lucina continues. "The trees let us bypass the lake, but that's probably where their human security is concentrated as well."

"Let's take the trees." You conclude. "I really don't want to mess with Hunters on their turf."

"Understood." Lucina nods, deferring to your experience facing the damn things.

And so your small squad proceeds through the forest. HK and ST-AR take point, and with their superior sensors, they are able to spot the Umbrella patrols with ease. They were pretty sporadic and well spaced out, but there were still quite a number of them. There were also cameras and motion sensors hidden in the trees, which you had to be careful to weave around. Soon, the lights of the castle begin to break through the leaves and branches, indicating you were close.

However, ST-AR motions for you all to stop and she turns.

"All right, we're near the treeline, but it's all open ground from here to the castle." She whispers. "Do we want to cross all at once or in pairs?"

Well.... going across all at once was the quickest way, but also the easiest way to get spotted. Crossing in pairs would reduce detection, but take more time which could also lead to detection...

You look from side to side. While you could see some patrolling guards, it didn't look like any of them were looking this way. A gap in their coverage you could exploit.

"Go!" You order as you break out from the treeline.

You and HK manage to cross the open yard. However, you have a mighty close call when one of the guards seems to notice your crossing and pauses, turning to look in your direction. You and HK press against the shadowed portion of the castle wall to try to stay in the shadows, while you see a glint from ST-AR's rifle as she takes aim.

However, the guard's partner yells something, and he quickly turns around and continues on his patrol path, none the wiser. You barely have time to breath a sigh of relief when Lucina and ST-AR cross the yard and link up with you.

"That was a close one." Lucina sighs.

"I would've taken them both out." ST-AR points out. "It wouldn't have been a problem."

"I'd rather do this as cleanly as possible.' Lucina grumbles. "HK, how's the door look?"

"My sensors show a standard physical lock and an electronic sensor." HK reports. "I can jam the sensor, but there's little I can do about the lock short of breaking it."

"You can't pick it?" You blink.

"I was never programmed with that knowledge." HK shakes her head.

You turn to ST-AR, who also shakes her head.

"Huh, not as prepared as we thought." You sigh.

"Can't you do it?" Lucina asks.

"Hey, are you trying to imply something here?" You respond, slightly offended.

"No, I'm straight up saying I know you have lockpicking skill." Lucina glowers.

"All right, all right, I get it!" You sigh as you look at the lock and take a deep breath. Thankfully, since this estate looked to be rather old, the locks were old as well and it apparently never occurred to the Ashfords to actually upgrade their locks. Good for you, bad for them.

The warmth in your chest from the cyrstal plate resonates with you, allowing you finer control over your crystal armor. You concentrate and a small, diamond lockpick emerges from your fingertip and you carefully insert it into the lock...

It takes a bit longer than you were comfortable with getting the damn lock open, and at one point you had to momentarily stop time to figure your way past a particular section of the lock was was simply maddening. However, you manage to get your pick through the whole way, and there's a soft click as the lock disengages.

And not a moment too soon. The next patrol round the corner, and all four of you pile in through the back door and HK silently closes it once you are all in.

"All right, now the real work begins." Lucina grumbles, brushing herself off. "Now, our priority is finding the secret passage into the corporate HQ, but there's a chance that they have terminals here that have direct access to their database."

ST-AR then projects a small holographic map of the estate, marking several points of interest.

"First, there's Ashford's personal study, which is sure to have at least a terminal there we can check out." Lucina mumbles.

"However, the interior of this structure will have its own security system." HK warns. "We may need to neutralize the security room if we want to proceed further into the building."

"Not if we're careful." ST-AR grunts.

"We'll hit the security room, then." You say. "Looks like it's not far."

"Right." Lucina nods. "Let's go."

Thankfully, the interior of the castle didn't seem to be populated. The rooms and halls were eerily empty, giving this place a rather... creepy quality. Of course, there were cameras and motion sensors, but HK and ST-AR did a good job guiding you around them.

Finally, you reach an armored door, camouflaged to look like a regular wooden one so it wouldn't stand out. This one had an electronic lock, so there wouldn't be any lockpicking this time around.

"I think I can get this lock open." ST-AR murmurs. "Unless you want something quicker."

"Well we DID bring breaching charges..." Lucina nods.

"Shouldn't we find out what's on the other side?" You wonder.

"The security room is electronically insulated." HK shakes her head. "It's next to impossible to determine what is inside through remote means."

Damn. Either way, you'd have to go in blind. Hacking the door would give you an opportunity to see what's inside first, but there was value in surprise and violence of action...

"Got it." ST-AR grins. "Wait, shit-!"

Suddenly, the security door clicks and swings open on its own, revealing the interior of the security center. There, you could see the entire room was filled with maid T-Dolls manning the security terminals. In the center, you saw SOPMOD herself, as well as another maid T-Doll that looked different from the others. Tall and intimidating, she exuded and air of authority.

"Hm? Did somebody enter?" The mystery T-Doll mutters.

SOPMOD and the mystery T-Doll turn to see what's happening, but they're not on alert and their reactions are slow, giving you a chance to act.

Both you and HK focus fire on the mystery T-Doll, drilling automatic fire into her chest and driving her backwards.

However, SOPMOD is lightning quick as you feared, and she immediately dives forward with superhuman speed, tackling ST-AR. Their combined momentum carries them straight into Lucina and all three of them go tumbling into the hall and into the room across.

Unfortunately, you don't have time to keep track of them, as the other maid T-Dolls staffing the security terminals hit the alarm and start moving to support their leader. Warning sirens begin wailing throughout the entire castle and presumable the whole compound, alerting pretty much every damn Umbrella soldier something was up.

"Lewis, I need you to buy me several seconds." HK frowns as she continues dumping suppressing fire into the security room, knocking down two of the maids. "If I can interface directly with a security terminal, I can either try to access the mainframe from there or seize control of the security systems."

...to reveal a quartet of large caliber guns hidden underneath.

What the fucking hell kind of T-Doll was this?!?

Just as you start to wonder, the cannons open up, showering you with bullets. Heavy shells impact your crystal skin, chipping and cracking the outer layers but still managing to hold. Unfortunately, the sheer force of the barrage halts your momentum, and you're left slowly advancing towards your opponent rather than charging.

But you achieve your objective in distracting her as HK dashes forward, drilling bullets into the remaining maids and then plugging herself into the nearest terminal. The lead maid suddenly realizes what's going on and pivots to target HK, but you reposition to put yourself between her and HK.

This time, you don't let yourself lose momentum and you continue to charge forward, catching the lead maid T-Doll in a brutal shoulder charge and ramming her straight into the main security console behind her. There's an explosion of light and electricity and shattered glass, and a loud CRUNCH as T-Doll meets wall.

The guns fall silent and the lead T-Doll goes limp. You don't have time to check whether she's active or not when there's a massive explosion behind you. In a panic you pivot around and dash back, where you see the room across the hall ruined and smoking.

But there, you see both HK and ST-AR pinning down SOPMOD, who was struggling and snarling.

"I AM SO GONNA KILL YOU ALL YOU BITCHES!" She yells.

"Just shut up already." ST-AR sighs as she plugs her link cable SOPMOD. The Umbrella T-Doll's eyes go blank and her body stops thrashing.

"Egan gave us SOPMOD's override codes." HK explains. "Unfortunately, it requires a direct connection to upload them.

"She couldn't have given us a verbal or wireless command, could she?" Lucina groans, her face covered with bruises and scratches.

And that's when you hear the sound of engines. Cars and trucks and helicopters. A literal army was converging on this castle at this very moment, and there was no way you could fight them all.

"So what do we do about her?" ST-AR raps her knuckles on the back of SOPMOD's head.

"We'll take her with us, like Auntie Egan wanted." You declare.

"Roger that." HK nods as she picks up the frozen SOPMOD.

"I'll take point." ST-AR says as she leaps out the now blown out window. "If we move now we should be able to stay ahead of the reinforcements.

"I'll leave behind some distractions." Lucina nods as she reaches into her pack and throws a few explosive charges into the hallway. "That should keep them away for a bit."

See you next time, Merc!
