>Welcome back to a Song of Sand and Steel, the Game of Thrones narrative game. Our House is House Blacksand, a new house in the Dornish Marches, who are much despised by their neighbours. Our Lady is Lissara Blacksand, a beautiful femme fatale, who is a dab hand with a spear. We are currently at Storms End, recovering from killing a Glutton who is currently being prepared for the trophy room and being made into a cloak.

>This is a quest using the Green Ronin A Song of Ice and Fire RPG system.

Character sheet in the next post.

A quick summary of the story so far.

Lissara is the daughter of a House Baratheon man-at-arms, who killed Ser Jonothor Darry, a member of Aery's Kingsguard at the Battle of the Trident. He was a cruel and brutal man, who caused no end of problems for both the Martells and Jon Arryn when Robert made him Lord of Shadowpeak and Vulture's Roost. After his death by poison, Lissara dealt with a small army of bandits, then swore fealty to House Martell at Sunspear. Thanks to a failed assassination attempt, Oberyn Martell felt guilty enough to set up a scheme by which Ser Nestar Wyl, an exiled scion of House Wyl swore fealty to you, and then you took over House Wyl in a highly disruptive war. Now you are in Storms End, where Robert Baratheon has thrown a small tournament in honour of the first nameday of Edric Storm, his bastard child. You went hunting, and got caught up in a nasty fight with a Glutton, a bear-sized wolverine, and currently recovering, slowly.

While the feasting and merriment does continue, your weariness at the days events starts to cause your eyelids to sag. Carth makes your farewells, and both of you head to the rooms that have been made ready for you. You consider having a tumble with Carth, but your bandages twinge, and you reconsider. Carth helps you get changed, and the two of you drift off to sleep, in the warm linen sheets of your bed.

You dream of woods and weeping trees, and a small willow, covered in moss, with a bowl of red and white paste at the foot of it's roots. You lift the bowl to your mouth, but before you can taste it, you jerk awake, sunlight creeping in over the sound of gulls cawing on the cliffs below Storms End.

Today is the day of the Melee and the Joust, and while you were considering taking part in the Melee, the mauling the claws and teeth of the monster you slew have put that far from your thoughts. You dress with Carth's help, and as you emerge, Jelissa is leading the children out of their room, already dressed and faces washed. She curtseys, and follows you and Carth to the great hall. As you are descending down the long stairs towards the hall, a voice calls out.

"Lady Blacksand, Lord Carth."

Turning, Jon Arryn is pacing down the steps, two guards in Arryn colours flanking him.

"I would like to offer you a place in the royal box for the Melee this morning. Robert never thinks about who will be there, and it will not do to have a large section of the box empty due to many of the Kingsguard are competeing."

"Thank you, Lord Hand. We'd be delighted to accept." you say. Jon Arryn nods, and walks part you.

"I'll ask the steward to put seats aside for you, Lady Blacksand. I do hope you enjoy the day. Also, the bones of the beast you slew have been prepared for travel back to Shadowpeak. The chest containing them is in your carriage."

-----------------------

You and your family eat, and once that is done, make your way out to the tournament field that has been erected outside the walls. The wooden enclosure has been set into a large round circle, and you can see Robert and Renly are sitting in a raised box, overlooking the grounds. You are directed there, and find you have been seated so that Jon Arryn is next to you. Robert calls a greeting down to you, and Renly nods, a look of excitement on his face. Next to Robert stands Ser Barristan Selmy and Jamie Lannister, apparently all the other Kingsguard have chosen to compete in the Melee. Robert calls down to you, as you ensure your children are sitting down properly.

"Lady Blacksand! Anyone caught your eye out there? I'd put money on Ser Cortnay, he seems determined to show off infront of his family! But then again, my Kingsguard are in the field!"

"I'll put 10 dragons on Cortnay, I feel I should stick with family."

Robert grins, and looks around the box.
"Well, anyone going to take that bet? I would, but my Hand informs me it's unfair to run a book as King. Kingslayer? You fancy running your luck?"

"On this field? Only if I enter, and I'm not risking my neck and missing the joust. Lord Renly, maybe you?"

Robert elbows his brother, grinning.
"Go on, Renly. Get into the spirit!"

Renly shakes his head.

"I'll bet on Ser Cortnay as well, 40 Dragons, but if Ser Jamie thinks the field weak, maybe he should put something up against it."

Jamie Lannister coughs, then bows his head.
"Of course. I'll match the bet, that Ser Cortnay will not win."

As the conversation finishes, and money changes hands, the 20 knights competing march onto the field, clad in armour, weapons drawn. The 5 white cloaks of the Kingsguard stand out, amoung the house colours and plain armour of the few hedge knights who are also fighting. Robert raises a goblet of wine, and yells out, his voice bellowing.

"LET THE MELEE BEGIN!"
>>
>>3468953
As the dust begins to swirl, and the knights begin to clash, Calrin and Cerran both stand on their seats, and Carth reaches across to hold them from falling. Robert stands, and gives a great yell of support, wooping loudly. Renly cheers, and claps his hands, while Barristan Selmy watches impassively. Jamie Lannister is similarly unmoved, but his eyes are clearly following the fight intensly.

You feel a hand on your shoulder, and Jon Arryn leans in close to you.

"Lady Blacksand, I wonder if I might speak with you about a way you can prove your loyalty to the realm and King Robert. Not that it is in doubt, of course, but simply as a favour to the Hand."

“Has there been any reason for doubts to cast about my house loyalties, my Lord Hand?” you say, turning to look at Jon Arryn.

“Not doubts about loyalty, but motivations. Your Lord Father saw Robert’s friendship as an excuse to attack those who disliked him, and you are allegedly close friends with Ellaria Sand, the lover of the brother of the recently overthrown queen. Oberyn Martel, said brother, saved your life, and his brother, the Prince of Dorne, backed your takeover of a house of ancient standing. Suffice to say, I am not convinced you have the realms best interest at heart. But this is a chance for you to prove it. And your recent actions make it doubly effective for you.”

Glancing up at Robert briefly, Arryn leans closer, and continues.

“In the Crownlands are many houses who were greatly wounded by Robert’s ascension to the throne. Many who feel long standing resentment of those raised in their place, and to the man who raised them. We want you to go and… sound them out. Imply that you are seeking their opinion, and will to act. Do so, and the throne will not dispute Ser Nestar Wyls pardon. A kinslayer is the worst a man can be, and I am certain Prince Doran can be shown the man to be unrepentant.”

"Lord Hand, I am uncertain as to what you want me to do. Maybe in plainer language? Otherwise I must decline for I will not enter into an agreement not fully understanding what you are saying."

Jon Arryn nods.

"I want you to go to vairous houses, a list will be sent, and upon visiting them, enquire as to their health, how they have recovered since the Rebellion, if they seek their old lands back through legal means, or if they have accepted the new order. If you do not, the Throne will contest the pardon of your vassal, and you will be dragged into a lengthy dispute, which Robert will not help you in. For there is nothing so despised as a Kinslayer under the eyes of the Seven."

"You put me on an unpleasant position Lord Hand, as I am not one to refuse or turn down a task from the crown. But were I to carry this out my absense from Dorne will be noted and I am not a popular woman among my neighbours."

Jon Arryn smiles.
"More popular now you have made one neighbour your vassal, and have the blessing of House Martell. But I understand your reluctance. Asking a month or so of travel in a temparate climate, staying in fairly wealthy halls would be taxing on anyone. Rest assured, an excuse can be given for your visit. Something to mollify doubts in Dorne. And suffice to say, it will be a good thing, you will be called to the Crownlands for. But we can talk later. I believe things are coming to a head."

Arryn gestures towards the field, and you turn to look, seeing that where 20 knights were, now only 5 remain. Cortnay stands, back to back with Emmon Cuy, facing off against Mandon Moore, Preston Greenfield and Boros Blout.

"It appears the Kingsguard decided to co-operate. An unfortunate show for those of the order who are competeing."

As Jon speaks, Boros Blout tumbles backwards, his helmet twisted in place by a ringing blow from Ser Emmon. However, this causes the young knight to be knocked away from Cortnay by a rushing charge by Mandon Moore. Preston Greenfield then lunges towards Cortnay, his sword aimed for Cortnays head. However, a quick step to the side, followed by a riposte sends Cortnay's blade under Ser Prestons guard, and to the Kingsguards throat. Greenfield angrily removes his helmet, and stalks off the field, scattering the small group of squires who are trying to lead Ser Boros from the field.

The battle between Ser Emmon and Ser Mandon Moore has ended with Emmon throwing his sword down, as Mandon presses him against the wooden wall. Robert gives a loud shout, and leans forward, as Ser Cortnay and Ser Mandon face off against each other.
>>
>>3469448
Cortnay and Mandon circle each other, blades touching occasionally. Suddenly, Mandon lunges forward, sowrd high, but Cortnay catches it on his shield. Another swing, this time low, and towards Cortnay's right leg seems to be undefended, until Cortnay raises his leg, and kicks the blade on past, before slamming the pommel of his blade onto Ser Mandon's helmet. This is not enough to bring the Kingsguard down however, as he rushes forward, tackling Cortnay back, and slamming him down hard. There is a breif scuffle, concealed by a cloud of dust, till it clears, revealing Cortnay on top, his dagger pointed to Mandons throat. Mandon, for his part, lets his head fall back, and raises a hand in supplication. Cortnay stands, and helps Ser Mandon to his feet, as Robert bellows out his approval.

"WELL DONE SER PENROSE, WELL DONE! 200 DRAGONS ARE YOURS!"

"Thank you, Your Grace! I'll spend them wisely!"

"DON'T DO THAT, BUY SOME STUPIDLY RARE WINE AND DRINK IT IN A NIGHT, OR HIRE THE MOST EXPENSIVE WHORE YOU CAN FIND! THATS A COMMAND FROM YOUR KING!" Robert yells, before bursting out laughing.

"Now, lets find some lunch before the joust. That was well fought, and I've worked up an appetite."

As the royal box empites, led by Robert and Renly, you can see Jamie Lannister is nowhere to be seen.

10, 4, 7 vs TN 10 (Success)

You spy the white cloak and gold armour of the Lion of Lannister vanishing around the corner of the Tourney grounds, and head off after him. Rounding the corner, you see him duck into a pavillion with the White of the Kingsguard upon it, and then a loud clang echoes through the air, followed by the sound of steel on steel.

Striding into the tent, you see Jamie Lannister with his sword drawn, striking at a training dummy with a breastplate strapped to it. His sword forms a glimmering pattern as it flickers around, bouncing off the dummy, leaving deep scores in the metal. Hearing you enter, he whirls around, a look of anger and rage on his face. It settles into a look of sullen resentment, as he speaks.

“Well, Dornishwoman? What are you here for? To make light of my loss? Or just for your gold?”

“Only 50 Dragons. Only 50 Dragons. In a tournament for the bastard son of the man who is meant to have married my sister! And to his little brother, no less, who will act smug all the rest of the day, because my sworn brothers aren’t worth the cloaks they wear! And I’ll be exposed to Roberts japes all tonight, even if I unhorse everyone in the Joust. So here.”

Jamie throws a purse at you, heavy with coin.

“Pay the little lord Baratheon and yourself, and do not come near me with false concern, or simplistic confusion. I have no time for it.”

He then stalks out past you, leaving you holding the purse.

Why even serve in the Kingsguard if your brothers are incompetent and unworthy of the name? For the prestige? You are already known as one of the finest warriors in the 7 kingdoms? You walk back with Jamie, discussing the hunt, and small things, carefully avoiding the subject of Edric and the Melee. You make it back to the castle without being noticed as missing, and you settle the debt that Jamie owes. A light spread is laid out, chiefly small cuts of meat from yesterdays hunt, cheeses, and light white bread. Some platters of fruit are scattered around, and Robert seems full of energy, barely eating, striding around with Renly tailing him, as the King encourages those who will compete in the Joust. Before long, he is chivvying people to finish faster, and even taking plates from people, suggesting they are putting on weight. After less than half an hour, the whole court is back outside, re-seated, as the first knights, Ser Jamie and Ser Bryce Caron the Younger, ride forward and salute. As Robert signals for them to begin, Jon Arryn leans in.

"Lady Blacksand, you inquired for more information, and for an upside. I am able to offer you this. In return for you agreeing to testing the waters of the Crownlands, the High Septon will host you in Kings Landing, and deliver a sermon in support of your house and claim. He may even look favourably on conducting a wedding in the Sept of Balor as a favour to you, in return for your "Vanquishing of the Foul Demonspawn"."

Jon Arryn smiles slightly.

"And speaking of the "demonspawn", here. The tailor has worked through the night, and just finished the sitiching."

He recieves a package from one of his guards, and unwraps it, revealing a long flowing fur cloak of black and blue, clasped with silver and edged with silver thread. It is a wonderous piece of clothing, and hangs well of your form, clearly tailored for you.

"The Maester took your measurements, while tending your wounds. But enough of your victory, and back to the matter at hand. You'll be expected to visit Houses Rykker, Stokeworth, Rosby and Malroy."

"Very well, My Lord, I'll sound out the houses you mentioned. And I assume you'll put in motion the actions of the High Septon?"

"Indeed. You'll recieve a message from the High Septon soon, probably next month, some of the lords you'll need to speak to may even be invited to the sermon. Speak to them, send a raven to the Eyrie with your findings. I'll recieve them. At some point."

Below, on the lists, Ser Caron is sent flying back by the Kingslayer, landing hard, but unhurt. Robert lets out a loud laugh, and slaps his knee, Renly grinnng along with his older brother. The joust continues without much excitement, bar a tilt of near 10 passes between Barristan Selmy and Jamie Lannister, ending with Ser Barristan knocking Ser Jamie from his horse. Ser Barristan then rides against Aron Santagar, defeating him a single tilt. Robert applauds loudly, and personally presses the prize purse upon his Lord Commander, before calling out for all to hear

"These two, this is what Kingsguard should be like! Able to take a hit, and then continue to win!"

The cheering falters for a second, before Robert laughs, and marches back towards the royal box, leading Barristan back. The cheering picks up again, and the old knight reluctantly waves. Robert resumes his seat, and then looks around.

"Normally we'd have a Queen of Love and Beauty, but not enough competition here. Renly! Get some pretty ladies in your court, so Lady Blacksand doesn't start coming here for every tournament so she gets praised and worshipped!"

Carth blinks at the comment, before Robert begins to laugh again at the reaction his words have prompted. Barristan shakes his head, but still swings the thin gold circlet towards you. However, as he comes near, he dips his lance past you, and it comes to a stop before Elia. He smiles, and then places the crown before Carth.

"While his Grace is correct, I find that it is better to leave it to those who can pass judgement on such things without having taken an oath to avoid such things. So I leave it to Lord Carth to choose between the two fairest maidens here. His wife, or his daughter."

Carth visibly swallows, as he looks at the circlet. Elia tugs firmly on his arm, and makes a small sound.

Carth smiles, and places the crown upon Elia's head, who immediately stands up on her seat, and kisses him on the cheek, before unweaving the line of yellow flowers and placit carefully on your head. A loud cheer, flavoured with laughter goes up, and the tournament comes to an end.

I'm going to pick this up again tomorrow, maybe a bit later than today. Roughly expect this length of session in the week, a few posts and votes, just to keep it ticking over.

Indeed. Hopefully we can meet them in one go at KL instead of going to their castles one by one. I also don't fully comprehend what Arryn offered?
>>
>>3473449
We’re doing it because getting on Arryn’s shit list is a bad idea. It’d be more damaging than the small war we just had. Dude is basically the king since bobby b can’t be arsed.

We could play this from many angles, for example we pretend to be going to the other houses to gain support, trade and alliances, but anyone who shits on us we can report back to the crown as disloyal.

Could even put on a show to have the king dislike us and maybe the other houses would be more open to letting some comments or opinions slip up.
>>
>>3474893
Dude Arryn doesn’t like us. That’s not good at all. He’s freaking powerful, and has both the clout and ability to rain shit on us for a long time with minimal effort. He will too if he thinks we’re not keeping the peace.

The next morning finds you and Carth finishing breakfast, as Lord Penrose enters, a fur cloak wrapped aroundhimself against the cold, being supported by Cortnay.

"Lissara, Carth, I'm planning on making for Parchments today, will you be joining me on the road, or do you intened to stay any longer? I imagine Robert will want to spend at least a week here, reliving his childhood, but keeping up with him is easily beyond my old bones. We'd be more than happy to host you for a few days in Parchments, though Cortnay has duties here to attend to."

Carth shrugs.

"I have no particular preference, Lissara, but if King Robert is planning on staying at Storms End, so will be the entire court. I'm not sure how much appetite you have for politics that will inevitably start up, now the tournament is over."

"We'll accompany you, Lord Penrose. It was our intention before this, and so I see no reason not to finish the trip. And it will be a good place to recover from my injuries."

Nodding, Carth calls to a servant, and begins to arrange the moving of your baggage into your carriage, and the organisation of your journey onwards.

The journey to Parchments is short from Storms End, half a days ride, but when you arrive there, you find a small town, surrounding a well fortified keep. Lord Penrose points to the tops of the towers of the keep, where ballistae can be seen.

"The engineers came back from the war, somewhat enthusiastic. Apparently, they came up with a few new ideas for assembling the ballistae faster, and began improving the ones on the castle's walls."

Carth smiles, and inquires after the health of the injured engineer, who apparently has retired from field duty, and now focuses on theoretical work mainly. You ride through the road of the town, and through the castle gates, where grooms appear to take your horses and luggage. You are brought in for a late luncheon, and the Maester is called to attend to your wounds.

The next week passes slowly, chiefly by virtue of you avoiding straining your injuries. The Maester attends your wounds, and Carth shows you his childhood home, from top to bottom. The children and Jelissa spend their days chiefly exploring the town, under the careful watch of the castle garrison. Lord Penrose seems to be renergised by the presence of younger people. Carth explains that his mother died when he was 5 years old, and with Cortnay and him moving away led to his father feeling rather purposeless. This was what led to his interest in seige engines, and the expansion of the already sizeable library. It is with a sad face that he waves you off, on the road back to Dorne.

Yes

The next few days pass by, somewhat uneventfully, and when the reports come in, they make for uplifting reading. Apparently, the desicive victory over your neighbours has caused many of the minor criminals who occupy the mountain hideaways and port boltholes of your holdings to have second thoughts, and the port even managed to see an uptick in tolls and revenues. However, the payments to the Bank took they toll, and Carth informs you that while still in the black (whatever that means), some serious coin is needed, for the next year at least.

Life continues on in Shadowpeak, till one morning, as Carth is going over the house records, and you are teaching Elia how to properly hold her toy dagger, Maester Borrel knocks on the door.

"My Lady, my Lord. A raven, from High Hermitage. It appears Ser Gerold intends to throw a tournament, though at Starfall. He claims it is to "rouse the spirits of my dear cousins" but given his reputation, I doubt that. He does inquire if we and any of our sworn swords wish to attend, either to compete, or to simply watch."

Carth glances at you.

"If we could win some prize money, that might go some way to doing it. And I believe Ser Ascar has recovered, so the joust is viable, and I can see Ser Darvin performing well in the Melee. Though leaving again may mean we miss on any buisness oppertunities here. Though I could stay and keep an ear to the ground."

Meanwhile, we'll stay here, keep an eye on things, look for chances to suceed. We'll send a letter explaining our recent journeys, and a desire to be home for a while, avoid the rush of travel."

Carth nods.

"One thing we should think about though. Will we send Jelissa as well? Apparently they became quite close as Ser Ascar recovered, and she has been very faithful. Also, as much as Ser Ascar is an exemplary knight, he is far from the best... coutier. If anything is brewing, I'd prefer to have someone there who can pick up on such things. I fear Ser Ascar might think himself above idle gossip among the attendees, but the tourney could be a wonderful place to gauge our position, post-conflict. And Jelissa is not necessarily noted as being one of ours, so to speak."

"You're right Carth, it would be a good plan to send someone who is more astute to the more intricate workings of the court. And I'm sure they'd appreciate some time alone..."

Carth rolls his eyes at the innuendo in your voice, but nods.

"We can easily make do without Jelissa for a week or two, and she can be our eyes and ears, while Ser Ascar is our lance. Now, on to less enjoyable matters. While we still have money to spare, it's not enough to meet our next repayment. So we need a way to make more money, because relying on tourney wins is how houses go bankrupt. We can either look to find assets to sell, or ways to increase our trade. Or, a more risky venture, find acceptable targets to attack, and gain wealth through raiding. We'd not be able to do it to any westerosi house, but there's more than Westeros in the world."

"I'd prefer to leave the more... radical options on the table till we really need it. Let's look into trade links, who needs what we have, who is looking for more oppertunities. Bringing in Master Syran might be good as well, he is realistically our best export."

Carth nods.

"I'll send a runner down to the town, ask him to come up. It's a shame Ser Nestar is still dealing with getting his lands in order, otherwise we could ship his iron through our port. However, he needs all the meagre revenues he can get right now, so can't risk a long term investment that doesn't pay off immediately."

Carth nods to a map on the wall.

"Our main challenge is finding something we have, that others can't offer. Yronwood holds a monopoly on the Boneway, and so blocks off any need for those houses beyond to treat with us, so looking west is our best move. House Manwoody, obviously, won't even listen to us. House Fowler, though, might be interested in coming to an arrangement. The chief issue they have is that the Boneway is a better route for traders coming from outside Dorne, inwards. There's very few reasons to go down the Princes Pass, unless you are looking to reach Starfall. Therefore, we need to look in the other direction. If we got House Fowler to agree to lower their rates, we could have a route going directly to Storms End from the Arbour."

Carth taps the island, marked with the cluster of grapes of House Redwyne.

"If we could establish that, it would be an increase in wealth for us, or at least, increase Master Syras's trade to the point we'd actually see a benefit. Of course, we could look for other alternatives, maybe looking to ship in from Tyrosh, with our fleet escorting a merchant fleet. While this would bring more direct coin flow, it would leave us with our fleet committed, and we'd have to negotiate with the Tyroshi from a position of weakness. Unless you wish to look at other options. I don't blame you if you do, none of these are a quick way of getting money, and will require a fair amount of time and effort."

Think about it. The arbor route maybe increases our cashflow. The Tyroshi route does for sure.

Additionally, our warships are doing sweet fuck all right now, so why not make them earn their keep? I cant imagine us needing them in the near future, because our enemies are both relatively land based powers.

"No need to go overseas. And no need to invest in things that won't gain us favour with our neighbours. We're still the new house, and one that seems willing to throw our weight around. I say we go to Skyreach, and see what can be arranged between us and House Fowler."

Carth nods, and makes a few notes on some scrap of paper.

"The Fowlers have trade contacts of their own, and offering a way to access the same route as the Boneway without paying the Yronwood tolls would be a fine thing. After all, in the same way merchants from our towns don't pay our tolls if they travel south, to Yronwood, merchants going north don't pay Yronwood. At the very least, even if everything falls through, we'll gauge House Fowler, and at best, we might see an increase in our income, as well as Master Syras being able to improve his trade."

Maester Borrel bows, and begins to leave.

Good to give the message a personal touch, plus Gerold (deviousness aside) has earned some minor praise helping us.

>You'll be expected to visit Houses Rykker, Stokeworth, Rosby and Malroy.
>Malroy

Oh really?

What year is it 288AC? Hm, quite a bit had happened since 285AC where Malroy is at. Not to mention the litany of dornish influence about the House.

Shoot me a DM on twitter, if you have it, I can give you some of the details if you'd like to use them.

You're a fucking asshole for dropping a quest not once, but twice. If you're ever gonna run again do us the courtesy of letting us know if your gonna drop before you quit. Otherwise, don't get our hopes up and fuck off.
>>
>>3497119
Same goes for you Sandy. If you drop this out of nowhere without at least saying why, then you're also an asshole.

>Write the letter with Carth

I said I would be running this on weekends cheifly. Remember this.

"No, Maester Borrell, I'll write this with Carth. A personal touch may be needed, after all, Ser Gerold is somewhat mercurial. We'll send the letter with Ser Ascar and Jelissa, that way we can write more than a raven can carry."

Carth pulls another chair over next to him, and begins re-sharpening his quill. He reaches into his writing box, and removes a clean sheet of paper, before writing at the head of it.

--------------
To the Knight of High Hermitage, Ser Gerold Dayne.
--------------

He then turns, and looks up at you.

"Well, Lissara? What approach fo you want? We could be very formal, wishing him well, and good luck in the tournament and so on, or maybe a more personal letter, thanking him for his aid in our war. Depends on how you want him to regard us, as close allies, or as simply friends."

>Formal and proper, treating Ser Gerold as a friend, but nothing more?
>A more personal letter, focusing on his service to the house?
