Welcome to Minion Quest, updates will be sporadic since your mom's nice fat ass requires a lot of my attention.

Here's what you need to know:

Pic related is General Goomba, a new recruit in Bowser's Army who's just badass enough to have been given an airship and a skeleton crew to work with. ...And he has absolutely no idea what he's doing. It's up to you guys to feed him directions and orders through the communicator on his ear. Write-ins always welcome, he's not that smart and needs all the help he can get. When he has a question for you he'll greentext it. Speaking of which...
-----

>guys i'm super scared right now
>be me
>get a good government job
>turns out its for a despotic empire
>first assignment is to assist in kidnapping a world leader
Now I've got this airship and four strangers at my command and only a few minutes before our first stop. What do?

>Look over assignment
Solid plan. Currently we're flying over the Southwestern Mushroom Kingdom. Our current target is the big pink castle, where Lord Bowser is already en route. Our little ship is the green one in the corner, the Verde La Sol. I like that name. I think it's Italian?
Anyway, our real objective is to make a beeline to the castle, but stop at some of these little squares on the way and cause havoc so the Mario has problems to fix while the boss makes his getaway with the pink castle's Princess. We're about to land on this corner square where a bunch of smelly mushroom men are hiding out.

That was a bad plan. I was caught 'mirin the ship while it was freefalling to the ground and fell out. I think I'm okay though. Sure is a pretty airship. Time to beat up some mushroom men.

Okay, here's what you need to know about actual battles.
Check out this spreadsheet to see the stats of your units:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1R5GbIBKWj9p-oa09tT6OA3ZIj3FUIfj3oXK_9JHdUwI/edit#gid=0
Units have points in Mobility (how many spaces they can move), Range (how far away they can attack from), and Power (how much damage an attack does). Range 1 is adjacent to the unit, Range 2 two spaces away, etc.
You, uh, don't really have to use all this if you don't want to. Your moves can be as general as
>Let Magikevin fuck up that guy in the lower left corner
to as specific as
>Move Cadet Guy up two and right one, and target the third enemy from the right
Every move made will also let the enemy move simultaneously, so think carefully.

"Also, most Abilities that don't mess with stats only activate when that unit attacks, so Cadet Guy's Oil Pellet won't work if the Private is pushing back this turn."
...Right. So we'll split your orders and have Cadet Guy join the Private and have our Infantry unit push back Bitch Boy #3. But it looks like our last enemy decided to quit sitting on his thumbs and take a shot at the Cadet.

This is my fault, I've left all the rules vague so that there wasn't a huge infodump at the start. Each turn has one unit move and one unit attack, or have one unit do both. But since I didn't specify, from now on you can move two units per turn if neither one attacks.

It sure is, as you can probably tell by the shit pacing. It's my first Quest ever, just having a little fun with some homemade sprites and ripped backgrounds.

The Engine Room, as you can probably guess, houses a lot of the machinery that keeps the Airship in the air for as long as it needs to be. And then puts the ship on the ground at a regulated speed. Constantly running to and fro from machine to machine are Gom, Goom, and Goomy, three Goombas that stand on one another in a stack. It's only been a few hours since we've met, and I've yet to even have a decent conversation with them. I can, however, already tell that they're probably nerds.
They don't seem to notice that I, their direct superior, am here to see what they're doing.

>Do some research on the ship
Couldn't be easier. The room that I check our World Map progress on is the Navigation Quarters. There are lots of dusty blue posters rolled up and tucked away on shelves that show off different things the ship is designed for. I'm not the guy to ask about all that stuff, but hanging up on the wall is this neat framed picture with a plaque.

Verde La Sol: The Shining Green Sunrise of War
First taking flight in 1991 during the occupation of Dinosaur Island, this scouting ship has been instrumental in many military maneuvers for the Koopa Corps. She was designed as an exploratory vessel, often sent ahead of battle ships with a small, expendable crew to investigate potentially hostile territories. With this in mind the Verde La Sol has a water-resistant hull for sea voyages and can reach cruising altitudes of 15,000 feet with little worry.

Wow, this ship doesn't show her age at all!
...While I was reading the plaque out loud, Cadet Guy stopped drawing on blueprints to listen in. I totally forgot he was in that corner at all.

>Check out Cadet Guy's drawings
He gives us a wave as I come over to inspect his work. It's a blue outline of the ship with a lot of numbers and such. All the notes are written in Heihoglyphics, I can't make heads or tails of what he's written. There are also three crude circles drawn at the center of the ship, almost like he was hastily trying to add something.
-----
"Heigh Ho, Generallisimo!
>"Yeah hey Cadet. Mind telling me what you're working on? Trying to get a little intel on the ship before our next stop."
"Surely! I was doing a little surface work on the hull here where I drew these circles, y'know, clearing out the rotted wood and such, and I noticed something odd."
>"Odd how?"
"A design flaw. I've been going over schematics for about an hour now and she's a fine ship. Two stories, plenty of living space, even that killer new karaoke machine you had installed. The numbers are good, the pressure against the outer perimeter is well regulated by the Engineers, the kitchen even does pizza on Wednesdays! But... It's just not right. I can't believe that nobody brought this up before..."
>"Well out with it man! I can't play guessing games all day, we're entering a war zone! What's the issue?"
"W-well it's...I mean... We're missing... Oh jeez..."

-----

>"Is there a leak in the fuel line? All these circles you drew, are they holes in the supply?"
"Well, not really. The ship doesn't have a fuel line at all. The, uh, Engineers move the ship with compressed air and everything else is electrical."
>"Weird. So what's the big upset?"
"We're a ship going into battle and we have no weaponry. I was drawing circles where cannons should be on the side."
>"It would be a lot easier if we could shoot down enemies instead of having to get out to beat everything up ourselves."
"Right, but the Verde La Sol was designed as a scouting ship. She's supposed to just investigate places, not engage in battle. Our orders don't match up with the equipment they gave us. It's almost as if we were just shipped out with whatever was in the hanger."
>"So start punching holes in the ship so we can place some cannons!"
"Yeah... we can't. This ship is every bit a national treasure as it is an active vessel. We can't make any cosmetic changes under penalty of law..."
-----
That's not fair! I wanna shoot some cannons!

>So just put some cannons topside!
>Maybe we could ask the bosses really really nicely to let us do it anyway?
>Let's just carry cannons into battle!

>>3457987
>>3457999
Certain abilities, like the General's and the Engineers' activate automatically when they're next to a unit that can be affected. Friends next to the general are always at +1 Power, and enemies next to the tower are always at -1. Abilities are divided into Passive ones like those and Attack ones that only activate when a unit, y'know, attacks. I've updated our Intelligence Reports to show which ones have which. And as far as stat boosting goes, you'll just have to try it to find out!
>>
>>3458126
>Duct Tape them on then!
Not a cosmetic change and optimal positioning!
>>
>>3458126
Could we build a moving platform in the ship? Something that would allow us to keep the look and add the guns. A part of the deck would have a sliding hull from where we would slide the platform out. We would place cannons there. Is something like that possible?

>"Who's the General here?"
"W-well you are, of course."

"Y-yeah...I was just thinking that, m-maybe one of our Pay Day packages would come with some cannons and then we could fix the ship up..."
>"Yeah, and maybe if I had wheels I'd be a wagon. But until then MOVE OUT!"

I mean, if that's what the kids like these days...
We'll throw a maple leaf into the pot and squish it in there with some honey. Give it that nice and nostalgic flavor. And also crunchy leafy bits.
And with that, the breakfast for dinner bar is complete! It all looks pretty great, and will do wonders to mask my true motives behind gathering the crew up together like this. There's just one flaw in my master plan... I forgot to write a speech.

>Toadsby Time
Our mushy snitch gets us started by throwing a rock at the solo Goombrat. Pretty decent arm on this guy. ...The Goombrat threw it right back at him. Should have seen that coming.
Woah, friendly fire! The western Piranha Plant takes a big bite out of his Fighter Fly friend. Must be really hungry...did we save any pancakes?

So Range refers to how many spaces away a Unit can attack. If it has a Range of 1, then the unit can only attack adjacently, or right next to the unit in any of the eight directions. Range 2 can be an additional space away from that, and it doesn't have to be a straight line. Both attacking units here have a Range of 2, Toadsby attacking once upwards and once to the up-right. Goombrat just did the same thing in the opposite direction. The way the Abilities are written, Rally and Tower have a Range of 1 and auto-apply as the conditions are met. Totally confusing to everyone but me.
-----
"Check it out, we've got a new HUD! They follow Chess Board coordinates, so now it's easier to call out specific squares for everybody."

So that would mean Magikevin could attack the Goombrat Toadsby just attacked without having to move, right?Regardless, he should move up a space to G3 so he's out of range of that Fighter Fly before he attacks the Goombrat.
(I think the main reason why I'm having trouble with range/movement stuff is because I keep wanting to assume "adjacent" means the four spaces in the cardinal directions around something and not all 8 spaces.)

Didn't mean to get all self-conscious, this is a blast. You can always vote in if you want, the General will either mash two plans together or pick the first one he sees. But if you're more comfortable just watching that's rad too. Just so long as everyone has fun. ...Once I get back from work.

Eeeeeh nah. I would rather move Cadet Guy to F2 due to the Engis currently having a wider range on their passive.
>>
>>3472091
Well the idea's to try and lower the dolphin's power. At the moment it's probably the most dangerous enemy here, at least in my eyes.
>>
>>3472152
While true. Moving the Engis there would actually just increase the chance of them being hit (Slight RNG on enemy tactics remember?) and lower their area of effect. We would be bodyblocking most of it and we would only have a single tile added. Cadet getting into position for Oil Bullet shenanigans and still having Private's Living Projectile ready is more relevant at this point in time imho.
>>
>>3472154
I misread the tactic as D2. Welp.
I'm still going with my post being a vote for Cadet's Guy move, As much as it makes more sense now.

>Cadet to the rescue
He has to move up a little, but dousing the Goombrat in oil will make it all slippery. Maybe it'll be able to escape? The dolphin takes advantage of the confusion and sneaks into the back ranks to take a shot at Toadsby.
The Fishbone moves across the stream, weighing its options.
-----
"The Fishbone doesn't seem to want to leave the water. I'm sure it can, but maybe its Ability is related to the tiles it stays on?"

Sure, you could always run away every time you see a zombie monster, but where's the adventure in that? Plus there may be advantages to beating them...
>>
>>3473043
Ah, shit, I kinda misinterpereted Cadet's ability. Thought it activated the turn he shoots them, not the next. Whatever.
Also good to know units can shoot over blocks. (Actually, are those even blocks? I remember Toadsby spawned on top of one last map, and I'm pretty sure I saw some fighter flies fly over them. Is it just a situational thing or have I been making an ass out of U and Me?)

Anyways,
>Kev: Magic the dolphin
>Engis: Get next to the dolphin
If I had to guess from Toadsby's words of wisdom, it most likely gets some form of stat buff in the water. I'm assuming probably a mobility buff, but it could be a power buff instead.
Or both.

The Dolphin might live just long enough to regret the mistake it has made. Kev takes another Rally boosted drain shot and patches up Toadsby. The Goombrat gets a little unnerved by the Bonefish and slides out of the way. Said Bonefish takes a nibble on his seafood adversary while another wails on SMB some more.
-----
"Block tiles don't really offer any of the strategic advantage you'd think they do. It's basically just a rubbly, blocky floor. I've seen units knocked into them for additional damage, though... Anybody have any knockback abilities? No?"

Cadet's Ability is poorly worded all around. It doesn't force movement at all. It just makes sure that once an affected enemy decides to move, it can't stop moving until it hits a wall regardless of Mobility. The files are being updated to call this status effect 'Slippery', which sounds closer to what it is. I'm the one who doesn't have a full list of how everything works, this isn't on you.
>>
>>3473101
Oh wow, okay. Cadet's ability is even more useless than I thought. Here I was thinking it could be useful to keep certain enemies from moving by forcing others to move instead.
Also, only 1 damage? Man, this guy's wimpier than I was expecting. Makes me a bit nervous, though... maybe he's got something up his sleeve. Besides beanification. I'll just hope for the best and chalk it up as paranoia for now, though.

The Engineers' Max HP is bolstered to 6!
BUT THAT'S NOT ALL!
The corporate overlords brought us down the bonus boxes for a job well done. We get to choose once more from the following rewards:

>Health Boost: +1 Max HP to all Units
>Resume: A new Unit is added to the party
>Pay Day: +1d100 Coins and an item

This is the part where I pass out and see what everyone wants when I wake up. For those who are curious, there are over 20 additional new recruits designed and statted. There's also no designed roof to HP bars and no telling what the mystery items in Pay Days are until they're picked. I literally come up with ideas on the spot.

We try to make a break for the ship, but we can't leave the battlefield! The Piranha Plant isn't looking too good... The area is surrounded by thorny vines, and any attempt to leave just has them dig into us...

BOSS 1-8
PIRANHA BUSTER
-----
"Okay, time for a crash course on Bosses! Rule one, we can't retreat. It's usually due to a gimmick, this time the arena's surrounded by spiky thorns like a wrestling cage match. Rule two, Bosses auto-attack everyone in Range. That means even the Duo can't stop them from hitting us since they only block 'declared' attacks. On the plus side most Bosses only have 1 Range I hope. Rule three, watch your ass! This is the big leagues!"
