/qst/ - Quests

You are Ivan Dhovochesky, an ace communist fighter pilot in a not-quite-Earth’s Cold War gone nuclear. You spent the last day scouting for transports to get you, your supplies, and your base personnel off of your current airbase before radioactive fallout from the nuclear war makes it uninhabitable. Also, your squadron shot down eight enemy aircraft in a single engagement, bringing your total to 12 enemy craft in two days. If any of those pilots survived in the irradiated wasteland, you’d probably have quite the reputation among your adversaries.

Regardless, now that you have some heavy transports at your base, you’re clear to start evacuations. But there’s one problem: you rescued one Major Grosky from another base, who’s at loggerheads with your own Major Nikonov. And he’s pissed that you sort of lied to him about his mentor, the Colonel, being less than alive, presently. At least your ex-squadron-leader-who-was-actually-a-globetrotting-spy seems to have a handle on things, and more importantly, he seems to have a plan. Unfortunately, that plan involves flying into a kingdom that’s about to be at war, through enemy airspace…

Chapter Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xt7vCAcgADc

Your eyes blink open slowly. Ouch. Sunlight blasts into the narrow slit between your teenage eyelids, bathing you in warmth and reminding you that it’s definitely summertime. As you turn onto your side, you feel the grit of sand under your skin. The gentle rhythm of waves washing onto the shoreline interspersed with seagull calls almost lulls you back to sleep, but a hard protrusion catches your attention. You open a single eye to squint at the offending object. It’s a perfectly smooth disk of stone, the ideal skipping material; there’s no reason to waste such a beautiful opportunity.

You hop up from your resting place and snag the stone, walking to the beach. You look up and see a small plane dragging a banner behind it, a flock of seagulls below it, and a cloud or two in the otherwise bright and clear sky. You stop at the shoreline, feeling the chill of the ocean washing over your toes as you take aim. With a flick of your wrist and a spin of the rock, you sling it across the waves. It makes it a couple of paces, but then your attention is caught somewhere over the horizon.

so I apparently missed what occurred after we began to escort the transports back to our base. I presume we got into a dogfight on the way back? Last I recall we had gotten our Su's and decided to send Guli out on his own

A glint of something… some things. Something inside you tells you those are bombers. Why do you know what a bomber is? What the hell is going on? A sound roars overhead, coming from behind you. It’s a small group of pilots, apparently flying to intercept the enemies. A realization hits, and you look around, realizing the beach has been empty this whole time. It’s just you, alone, watching the war unfold. As small contrails streak away from the fighters, you stand transfixed, following them to the small explosions blossoming in the formation. Then, you remember the aircraft towing the banner from before. You spin on your heels, scanning the sky for it. The letters say something you can’t quite make out… you squint. Damn it! what does it say?

Within seconds, the jet noises from the bombers draws within earshot. You know what comes next. The familiar whipcrack of a supersonic bomber passing by, and the endless roar and whiteness of an atomic blast.

You’re jerked out of your sleep by the sound of jet engines. Sounds like a… sound like a fighter! Straight overhead! You shake Gulayev awake, yelling “GULAYEV! WE NEED TO SCRAMBLE! FIGHTERS OVERHEAD!” You squint into the sky, attempting to identify the mystery aircraft. How did they find you here? You thought you killed them all!

>Stop and look more closely at the incoming bogeys, maybe you can get a positive ID on what you’re up against (Roll 3d10 for spotting)

No excuses here, I just died a little bit. Sorry to anyone who wanted to continue having fun, I lost track of time grinding the Centurion 7/1 in World of Tanks with an old buddy. That 105mm is so good even with the shit damage per minute. And the HESH is just godly with all the ultra lightly armored tanks running around these days.

Anyway, without further ado, I present more questing!

Gulayev notices your absence, and stops running as well to look up. You speak up. “Gulayev, maybe the Party was wrong about god being dead. If he’s up there, that’s one hell of a sense of humor.” Gulayev laughs, quipping back. “Popov is good, but I would stop short of calling him a god, Comrade.” You smile, hope soaring in your heart as you spot the base personnel gathered around the end of the runway, waiting to receive this new guest. You and Gulayev exchange a wordless affirmative, neither daring to say what you hope, lest it turn out to be untrue. Then, you break into a dead sprint.

As you arrive to the mass of maintainers and officers waiting for the pilot, you see the plane wobble down onto the runway. The nose bears the same faded “70” it did when it left earlier in the afternoon. As it coasts to a stop and rolls up to the waiting party, the canopy slowly rises up. The pilot inside removes his helmet and leans back in his seat, closing his eyes and running a hand through his hair. You would recognize that face anywhere. Somehow, miraculously, Popov has survived. You step forward to welcome your comrade back, but Gulayev is already muscling his way through the collected crowd of maintenance personnel ahead of you. By the time you make it to Popov, Gulayev has him in a bear hug reciprocating the one Popov had administered earlier in the morning. As Gulayev releases his wingman, you’re at bat. You suddenly feel a hint of shame and failure at being unable to find or protect your wingman, but that barely tinges your elation as you grasp his hand. You give it a firm shake, as though to confirm that he’s not just a ghost or a hallucination. You have conflicting thoughts about what to say first.

You take a deep breath as you release his hand. “Popov. I’m so sorry. I can’t even begin to apologize for how badly I failed you as a flight lead. I sent Gulayev to look for you, but I stuck with the transports…” He gives you a look of relief and shakes his head. “I can’t think of anyone else I would have trusted to kill those last two pilots. I don’t want to think about what would have happened if they had caught me without avionics and with poor control response.” He glances over to Gulayev before continuing. “This is why I told you to pay more attention to your radar books, you stupid oaf.” He turns his gaze again, over your shoulder. “Ah, that would be the Majors and the Lieutenant.” he says, offering a quick salute. You salute as well, turning on a dime to face the incoming officers. You turn around just in time to see Sokolov cut in front of them and practically crash into Popov as he crushes his hand in a vice grip.

“Saber Two, Aleksi, thank ya. Thank ya mightily. There’s no tellin’ ya how much that plane means ta us here“ he cries, his rural accent bleeding through his tears. Popov extricates his hand from the shake, and as he shakes off the enthusiastic maintenance chief, dismisses him with a simple “I’m glad I made it back alive.” Sokolov appears to at least partially register the comment, but he’s already moved past, barking orders to his crew as they inspect the MiG behind your wingman. The sarcastic chorus of “Yes, Babushka” fades into the din behind you, as the wind blows your hair out of your face.

The stately procession of Nikulina’s wheelchair, flanked on either side by a Major, finally arrives. Nikonov is the first to speak. “Comrade Popov, we congratulate you on your outstanding courage and remarkable skill under fire. Without your bravery, we would not be alive to evacuate. In another time, I would personally recommend you for commendations and an early retirement with benefits befitting of your service. As things stand, however, we will be in need of your services as early as this evening. This base is within hours of killing us all.” You squint your eyes closed, rubbing your forehead as the Major speaks. When did this turn into a briefing?

Nikulina follows up. “You are one hell of a pilot, if the rest of Saber’s report is to be believed. I share the Major’s sentiments, but as it stands, we are only a few hours away from evac. Our destination is the Kingdom of Rabati—soon to be the Socialist Republic of Rabati, if the Capitol is to be believed.” he says, gesturing to the folder of official documents from before. Popov seems less surprised than you expected, simply nodding along as the spy briefs him on the upcoming trip. He does frown at one detail, however. “If you’re correct about the Kingdom accepting us, that means our shortest path is through openly hostile airspace over Hakkash.”

Nikulina smiles. “Ah, well our newly obtained Major here has some ideas as to what we can do about that.” He gestures to Grosky, who unfolds a map of your destination and begins speaking. “Thanks to the near constant warfare in the region and the collapse of colonialism, the air corridor over the eastern Yatab Peninsula represents a weak point we can exploit. If we sneak in quickly, we will likely get through with minimal resistance.”

You take a look at the map. Sure enough, a small piece of land juts out into the Sahyid Gulf, right above the Hakkash-Ribati border. A small diversion could keep you in friendly airspace for all but a tiny portion of your flight. Brilliant. The only catch appears to be the flight distance. At a range of 2100km, the MiG-29s will barely be able to make the trip. If things get ugly, there will be little fuel to spare for a fight, and any action will take place at the end of a three hour ferry trip. You take solace in the fact that your Su-27 will have plenty of fuel, but the idea of flying into hostile airspace again today doesn’t sit well with you. Not like you have a choice.

Nikulina tosses you a second folder from within the first. Stamped on the front is COLLECTED INTELLIGENCE ON HAKKASH AIR DEFENSE NETWORK. He nods at you to open it, saying “Study up. Look for my highlights and notes in the margins. We leave in two hours, assuming the jets cooperate for the maintenance crews. I’m already nervous enough about the fallout, even if the math shows it getting here late tonight.” As the collection of officers finishes the informal briefing, they distribute maps to the flight, as well as filled canteens for each of you. In addition, Major Grosky makes the rounds, doling out inventory sheets depicting the stock of various munitions in the depot.

You open the folder, and skim through it until you find a highlighted paragraph:

AIR DEFENSES OF THE YATAB PENINSULA:
Following the 1979 border skirmishes, the Yatab Peninsula’s air defense system was largely eradicated. A small number of MiM-23 HAWK batteries remain intact, and a moderate number of Rapier batteries continue to be operated. Repairs to the peninsula’s defenses have been slow, owing to the hotter nature of other sites along the border. Instead, Hakkash has opted to deploy some of its older interceptors to the area, primarily its Kfir C.2. While the rest of the fleet is undergoing upgrades to a new standard of some sort, the older craft remain on standby to fill in for the gaps in the missile defense.

You see a handwritten scribble in the margin: GO TO REAR OF FOLDER FOR SYSTEMS BRIEFINGS. You flip to the datasheets at the back of the envelope, and withdraw a collection of documents detailing the enemy’s known air defense system capabilities. This is more like it. Short ranged and only capable of low altitude interceptions, the Rapier represents a larger threat to transports and helicopters than fighter-bombers or strike craft.

Radar guided missiles and SACLOS batteries are not your cup of tea. You shake your head, leafing through to the next page. Finally, a jet! The breakdown of information is slightly different this time, and there’s even an attached picture. You let out a whistle. That jet looks beautiful.

SYSTEM:
Kfir C.2
RANGE:
Short (unknown)
WEAPONS:
2x All-Aspect IR Missiles (Python 3) — range: 8km
2x internal 30mm cannon
SENSORS:
ELTA EL M-2032 — range: 40km
MANEUVERABILITY:
Slightly superior to MiG-21.
SUMMARY:
A Hakkash-derived version of the popular Mirage V airframe, the Kfir features numerous improvements in short range avionics and combat capability. Retaining the excellent climb rates and good maneuverability of the Mirage series interceptors, it is lightly, but lethally armed. Do not underestimate its Python missiles; despite their shorter range compared to the R-73, they are just as lethal inside their firing envelope.

You look over your probable targets. A handful of SAM sites, probably no problem for the Kh-31s to take out. If you hit the radar with the anti-radiation missiles, you could probably clean up with rocket pods. But the briefing did say the holes in the defense would be plugged with fighters, and if you go up too heavy, you might have a hard time against them. Decisions, decisions. You pull an empty sheet out of the back of the envelope and prepare your loadout.

2x R-73
2x R-27
2x R-77
2x Kh-31

Gulayev’s sheet is covered in his trademark chicken scratch. It reads as follows:
2x R-73
2x R-77
2x B-8M rocket pods (20 S-8 and 20 S-8D)
Large Drop Tank

After giving it a once-over, you take a look at Popov’s meticulously constructed list.
2x R-27
2x R-77

The sheets look pretty good to you, with Gulayev handling the short range end of combat, and Popov ready to blast everything from as far away as possible.

Do you guys want to add some romance into the quest? I hadn't really anticipated doing so, and I'll warn you that I have no experience writing interpersonal romantic character development, so it might be rough, but I am willing to give it a shot.

If we did, I assume you'd want a variety of romance options. Most of them would probably come in the form of other Union troops coming to Ribati, with maybe one or two already in government/military positions in Ribati.

Dunno, let me know your thoughts on what you want in this quest. Like I said before, I'd be down to give it a crack.

Also, to tack on to the "what do you want from this quest?" posts, what details about the world do you guys want to know? You've got a three hour flight ahead of you with little to do besides shoot the shit with your wingmen and the IL-76 aircrews, so before I get to writing that stuff, I'm curious what aspects of the world you're interested in.

Obviously, speculation about the effects of the war will be rampant. But are you interested in stuff like what life was like before the war? Political movements in the contemporary Union? Thoughts about the leading figures of the various nations? Backstories to various characters? More info on the Afganian conflict? Stuff about Not!Vietnam? Pretty much everything is on the table, but I can only write so much without overloading you with details, so I'd like to get your opinions on what you want to see.
>>

I wouldent mind it personally. But a lot of the reason you started this if I remember was to practice your writing. So more elements to practice wouldent be a bad thing I think.
>>

I would certainly appreciate some basic stuff about our nation and the political situation in general
>>
>>3458000
What specifically about the nation, though? Exports? Imports? Population dynamics? Racial makeup? Politics I can work with, definitely.
>>
>>3457923
a part of me wants it, but another part says no. So many popular quests nowadays focus so much on the waifus that I get the urge to close the window whenever a new quest seems to be going in that direction. This despite the fact that romance is one of my guilty pleasures

>>3458047

Thanks for the feedback. Sorry for the long wait, I'm trying to cram a little bit of development for Sokolov in there but am suffering from writer's block. I'd like to expand on everyone's favorite hick, and then another character as well before you have to take off again.

Do we have any aircraft carriers?

also where the fuck are we from? Like I know our actual nation but I mean since this is the Not!Soviets I assume we have numerous republics

Morning, lads! Still suffering from that dastardly block, but I’m gonna try to get something out today. In the meantime, here’s some backstory which I plan to work into the story proper at some point.

You have a single carrier that was out on its first deployment, the Admiral Fedovich. Despite numerous teething problems, the design is relatively sound. It would have been a priority target for NOTO nuclear strikes, however, so the odds of its survival are low.

You are from Rovosco, which is Not!Russia. You grew up in a once-rural area that was absolutely transformed by the communists in your parents’ lifetimes. Going from a harsh agrarian rural existence, barely eking a living out of the soil, to the comforts of modern life provided by rapid industrialization was a transformative experience for the town as a whole. (Pic related when someone starts talking shit about brutalist architecture)

Going from a nowhere town with nothing to a bustling river city was a massive boon to the area, and as such, you got a pretty damn good education. There was even a town flying club, and your father, an avid glider pilot, jumped on the opportunity when he found out you were interested in aviation.

Clearly as we must become as good as Char we need the brownie and then forget about her as she becomes her own side story hero.

Why the fuck capitalism has to ruin everything for us.
>>
>>3459568
Capitalism has to ruin everything for you because despite your best socialist intentions and what your heart says, full public ownership of the means of production makes economic calculation nearly impossible. Good video on the problem: https://youtu.be/zkPGfTEZ_r4

This is not to say that market failures don’t exist; that’s why somewhat redistributive welfare state capitalism like we have in the west provides better outcomes for its citizens than full on socialism. If you live in America and you think “socialism is when the government does things” that’s the result of cold war brainwashing. It’s why there are so many ardent “””socialists””” who really just want healthcare as a public good; they don’t actually want the abolition of private property rights, they’re just conditioned to think of any welfare program as such. I could rant on about how libertarians are just as bad as commies, but that’s a discussion for another time.

None of this addresses the fact that when new products are innovated there must be additional code written to handle their supply chains and other stuff, though. Like, optimizing a known and set array of goods is doable, but optimizing for a continually rising material living standard is nearly impossible.

Maybe you could use an AI to plan an economy, but that centralizes decision making so much more than market economies. And one point of failure that can lead to exploitation and corruption is a far greater flaw than the diffusion of power over consumers, producers, and the government that liberal capitalism provides.

Is the quest dead? Not really! Have I, the glorious soviet QM, had a massive, life-changing event? Also not really! Did I, the glorious leader, make a mistake not telling any of you I won’t be back from vacation until this upcoming saturday? Absolutely not, I would never make that kind of mistake.

Watch for thread 3.5 in a few days, with 150% more revolution, 200% more death to the borgeoisie and their capitalist pig underlings, and 500% more power to the proletariat. Long live the global socialist future!
