>>
>>3427859

Our small band of trolls lived in this mountain range for as long as we can remember, gathering and hunting during the night to provide ourselves with sustenance and sheltering ourselves during the day in the caves that dot the mountain side.
We know that somewhere in the west there's a dwarven hold for we saw dwarves roaming around a couple times before when we were hunting around there; and in the east we saw lizardmen wandering about. To the north there's a vast conifer forest into which we venture on occasion when hunger presses us to get down the mountain to hunt farther away. To the south there are a vast expanse of plains where wild herd animals can sometimes be seen.

Let the pillaging of nearby settlements for resources begin
>>
>>3427942

We consider pillaging nearby settlements for resources. But we don't know for certain the location of any settlements!

In which direction should we go looking for settlements to pillage?

How many trolls should we send to go pillage said settlements?
>>
>>3428005
East towards the lizardmen. Send 8 adult trolls.
>>
>>3428312

We send 8 adult trolls carrying large tree trunks that serve them as clubs towards the east seeking to pillage the lizardmen settlement when they find it.

After a few weeks of march through the mountains we find in a small valley a village of about 300 to 400 lizardmen by a river; they have lots of mudhuts and a few wooden watchtowers.

Our trolls stroll into the lizardmen town and attempt to grab some loot; but are quickly swarmed by about a hundred lizardmen with spears.

Our trolls begin to fight the lizardmen, delivering massive blows to the lizards; but after the few lizardmen get smashed by our clubs the lizardmen wise up and use their superior speed to dodge our slower club striked. Slowly but surely they begin to pierce at us and our trolls are bled at a pace they can't regenerate. Ultimately when we're facing the odds of about eighty lizardmen against us eight, tired bleeding and weakened we are forced to fall back and run for our lives; still, two of us fall behind and are killed by the lizardmen.

Battle results: Lost 2, injured or killed about 20.

Tame goats.
>>
>>3428408

You capture some mountain goats and begin herding them in the sparse grass that grows in the mountains. They tend to flee when you're not paying attention, you can't really keep many goats without some means of keeping them from fleeing. There's also not that much food available for them in one place here in the mountains, they graze in extense areas in the wild so herding them is quite time consuming.

However, we don't really know how to properly build and work a forge, the fire doesn't burn hot enough to smelt the ore that only glows red hot but doesn't melt and what would be a forge room end up becoming just a fireplace.

The dwarves were close to sounding the alarm when they saw you approaching, but they were beset by doubt when they saw you walking slowly, unarmed and with ore in your hands. You offer it to them and attempt to communicate, the attempts are futile, but they pick up the ore and stash it away. They speak to you in a tongue you don't understand, and bring out some rounded pieces of grey metal and hand it over to you. You try to show them that you want to turn the ore into weapons, but they don't seem to understand. Eventually, they go on their way.

Again, you spend the year trying to find a way to turn the flames hot enough to melt the ore. You realize that stashing the flame into small constructs of stone, which then let out their fire in the opening above, makes for an efficient construct. You can finally melt the ore, but you do not know yet know what to do with the melted ore, which simply stays within the newly named furnace. The melted ore is subject of praise and worship by your population, some begin speaking of the fire spirits housed in the furnace.

We've spent the better part of the year catching deer and bringing them back to the cave network to feed them our mushrooms. It's not easy to keep them within though, a few trolls have to keep guard on them at all times so they don't escape. We're dedicating many mushrooms to feeding the deer, but the addition of a stable raw meat source to our diet is helping our trolls grow stronger than usual. We've discovered that, apparently, raw meat is a stronger food than raw mushrooms.

The dwarf stays over with us, and watches with great interest as we attempt to bring in the deer into the cave rooms we've crafted for them. He was more astonished by the stone furnace in the Fire Room, and has been working around with it. He's trying to communicate with us with gestures, yet still we struggle to understand one another.

>Can we do two actions, one with the dwarf and one normal or just one? Because if it's one, I'd rather learn to speak with the dwarf.
Fugit, why not?

You expand the fire room in order to carve out another furnace. The dwarf is mightly impressed by your deeds and watches in awe as the trolls use their gigantic bodies and their stone pickaxes to carve further into the mountain. The trolls begin putting food close to the furnace and notice how it cooks. They eat it, and the taste is indescribably better. It doesn't provide more food, but it makes the one you have better, and those who eat it more robust and less prone to sickness.

Over the year, your trolls finally begin to communicate certain things with the dwarf, using shoddy signs, he is able to tell you that smithing requires more equipment than what you have, but that he is willing to bring you dwarven equipment in exchange for ore. The little dwarf also starts drawing in the mud outside after the rains, he points at it then at himself multiple times while saying "Ugni". You'd wager it's his name, and that the strange drawings represent him.

Many of your trolls began to replace their usual grunts with the Hand Language to communicate with each other, it seems to become a staple in your society after a while.

You carve out another large room for the tame deers and house the plump and least unruly ones there. Hoping that their little ones will be as plump and nice as them. It's a start, at the very least, but you're sure that it'll take generations of deer before the first signs of change start setting in. The wilder deers are kept in a separate room, but sometimes interact with the tame ones to see if their behaviour makes them tame as well.

Ungi the Dwarf, meanwhile, has eagerly accepted your ore and brought in an entire set of strange tools, made of the same ores as yours, but more complex in nature. They are only fitting for a dwarf sized being though. He teaches you how to smith throughout the year, and makes various tools with the ore and wood. When you see them, you are completely amazed, they are much better than your breakable stone tools. Again, he draws various signs in the ground as he goes on each step of the smithing. Your trolls are awestruck looking at the dwarf engaging in his craft.

So a flat step in the mountain side? Alright

The trolls spend the better part of the year using all kinds of tools to try and carve out flat steps on the mountainside. This is not a simple task however, usually, the steps are more rugged than smooth, as their tools aren't the best and their knowledge stoneworking, though efficient, requires much finetuning to be able to flatten stone. Still, after years of working in the mountains, the trolls realize that they've begun to carve out better and faster than they used to. Nonetheless, the grass seems able to adapt a bit better to the step itself, it's not like the grassy fields of the lowlands, but it could hold a few goats.

Ungi eagerly accepts the coin and begins his work, accompanied by some adult trolls who help him in his undertaking. By the end of the year, the smithy is finished and your trolls marvel at the sight. It's not quite the beauty like Ungi's, but it will do the job relatively well.

After some shoddy attempts and multiple failures. Certain trolls finally seem to get the hang of it, the most ardent worshippers of the Fire Spirits enjoy the work and start imitating the tools of the dwarf Ungi, but bigger. By the end of the year, there are enough tools for use during our work projects.

The trolls who were supposed to be sent out are outraged at the demands. They signal that the mountain is their home just like anyone else's, and they refuse what they see as an offer of exile. The infighting is not quite solved yet, but the new methods agreed upon to resolve disputes are beginning to bring in results. Ungi, seeing these disputes, mentions that, back at home, a Great Dwarf solves the disputes between the Clans. He says more, but he has a hard time translating his dwarven concepts to your Hand Language.

The elders, not enjoying the current situation, have begun preaching that the fire spirits are at fault, and that we should instead worship the stillness of the mountain, our home, instead of the fickle embers of the furnaces.

Ungi has the right idea. We should have one leader solve the disputes and everyone follows his order. We can take turns being the leader. The new leader's name will be Big Chief.

Council of elders for solving disputes(always an odd number), encourage the idea that the flame spirits and the stillness of the mountain are both important in different ways. The fire teaches us to change and grow when neccessary and the stillness teaches us not to lose our way during our advancement.
>>
>>3436134
>>3436125
Both of these.
>>
We dug deeper into the mountain and found more ore veins to be used. We have enough to replace tools that are worse for wear and keep us going for a good while now.

A council of elders was formed, the eldest trolls gather to mediate the disputes between the members of the herd with the stillness of the mountain in mind. They recognize that fire spirits are necessary to move forward, as otherwise we would still be using stone and hands to carve out the mountain. The young ones are taught about the importance of the stalwart mountain and the ever-moving fire.

One of our elders has died this year from a cold. Our trolls had not been faced with death since the attack on the eastern lizardmen, and those could never be properly given rest. This elder has asked to be left out in the wilds so that the beasts of the mountains can feast on him. Many elders seem to have shared this sentiment with him, and would eventually like to be laid to rest the same way.

After the troubles die down, the goat herders start bringing in their livestock into the pens. Many of the goats flee back to their original spots though, and the trolls decide to devise a cunning plan to keep them within their alloted steps. Walls.

Trolls have hobbies during their downtime, one of them is to carve and make small stone effigies. This time they decided to craft rocks into certain shapes so that they can be piled one on top of another. The walls are tall enough that the goats can no longer get out, this stresses them out greatly though, and the trolls decide it would be best to spend some time outside with the goats every once in a while. Along with this, the entrance of the cave was sealed, leaving only a trol-sized opening at the front.

Ugni is glad to see that you've gotten autonomous with the ore tool-making, and is asking for a favor: To only barter your ore and tools with his dwarven coins. You don't understand the dwarf's fascination with these small hunks of brown, grey and yellow ore, but Ugni has been your steadfast ally so far, having spent years with the herd.

We decided to make coins as the dwarves did. Our first attempts with our own ore can barely be called coins, but we eventually started crafting a round shape and even adding some simplistic engraving. Using the rare yellow ore that the dwarves brought us, we made the nicest looking coins, using the light grey and brown ones, we made simpler coins. The members of the council of Elders decided to keep yellow troll coins as sign of their status, the adults kept the light grey ones and the juveniles the brown ones. Infants were given coins of our own dark ore when they were born.

We had to refuse Ugni and his request, which gravely disappointed him. Nonetheless, our council of elders gathered to offer him his own troll yellow coin for all he had done for our band. When Ugni saw it, his eyes gleamed with greed, but when he saw his face in the back, the engraving that we worked the hardest on, tears sprang from his face. He took the coin and thanked us profusely but said he had to leave and head back to his home now, though he would pass by every year with his caravan.

The Dwarven caravans that passed by along with his started cutting us what they call more 'lucrative' deals. We were given more coins for the same amount of ore.

Why can’t you fucking model population growth realistically? 45 to 120 in 19 years? In humans that would be an insane growth rate. In trolls, who are much larger and require much more food, that is an unsustainable and impossible growth rate. Especially when 85/120 members of our population cannot contribute enough food to sustain themselves. Furthermore, in a creature of that size, a gestation period of anything less than 20 months is impossible. Figure your shit out QM.

>Yeah it’s also insane how we ever got to a population of 347, with 160 of them being children who can’t produce for the tribe. We are hunter gatherers who spend 20 years trying to figure out how to use tools and animal skins. We shouldn’t be having ANY children desu. If survival of the fittest were a thing we should honestly just die out. Plus the fact that we used digging sticks to make out traps and dig for clay, when we spend over a decade to get stone tools shows how fucking stupid our people are.
>Do you not understand human life cycles, reproduction, or kcal required for basic human activity? How population growth with such primitive technology and infrastructure, not to mention lack of agriculture, is much slower? We’ve gone from 150 people to 969 within 83 years. That’s a population growth rate that would be impossible to achieve without a massive nutritional surplus, modern medicine, and adequate housing. The fact that children have been at around 40% or more of our population for nearly 50 years is also insanity. I like civ quests but you need to rethink whatever mechanics you’re using, as well as whatever metrics for growth you are using.

>>3437009

We began making our own armor during this year, we traded some ore for the dwarves' best looking pieces and have been attempting to copy them to the best of our capabilities. It went well enough, as usually it was all about rounding up pieces. They're not pretty to look at, but they can do the job. Using our ore though, we realize that, though heavier, the armor can outlast the dwarves' armor quite a bit.

This might seem meta, but I was actually planning on what's going to happen next.
In the middle of the year, the lizardmen arrived. There are around 200. It had been 18 years since one of your kind had last seen the lizards, but most adults still remember what happened all those years ago. A few of them are riding strange swamp-river creatures, and most of them are geared up with wooden armor and spears with stone tips. These leaders hiss what seems like words, attempting to speak to you. Your own trolls have geared when this band was sighted. The elders have taken up the fight as well, along with some older juveniles: You number 45 trolls, but only 20 adults are properly geared.
>They want us dead. Charge, kill them all!
>Try communicating with the lizards.
>Point them away from our settlement, they have to leave.

>>
>>3437551
45. They are in front of our mountain now.
>>3437543
>>
>>3437608
Is there a narrow area, like a ravine or something similar that we can funnel them into?
>>
>>3437631
We know the terrain pretty well from living here, but the specific landscape of our area haven't been laid out by the QM.

I say we could lure them into our caves or mines. We'd have the advantage because its CQC and they can't burn or starve us out because we have the deer rooms. I'm assuming we've also stockpiled mushrooms for the deer.
>>
>>3437942
Actually, we have a bit of an idea of a layout. We know there are multiple caves in the face of the mountain, we know that there are crude terraced pastures, and we know the caves are all interconnected. In a previous post, the QM mentioned sealing off a singular cave opening though, so that means that only one cave has any level of defense.

Additionally, these caves are big enough for a troll band to comfortably live in, which means that the lizards might be able to march their war-band right into a unblocked cave and attack our young and rob us while we are engaged in the main cave.

I'm not saying that our savant-trolls would be able to figure this out, but the point still stands. If they knew what we knew, they'd attack at range from the terraces. Can we assume that there are several terraces, in front of or near the mouths of each of the caves? I think that's fair.
>>
>>3437942
Makes sense, but i was hoping we could lure them into a choke point and drop stones from above before going in to slaughter the rest.

Also i apparently misread your id, cause i thought you were QM.
>>
>>3437985
Trying to get into the mind of a troll, falling back to a defensive position seems like too much of a big brained play. It is reasonable to assume that they wanted armor after seeing others with armor, same idea with weapons. The idea of throwing boulders like others throw rocks is in the same vein. At this stage of development, they are mimics, mirroring what they see others do. I know it wasn't addressed, but if we wanted DEEP LORE, would it be fair to say that the Trolls got the idea to start forging because in the first raid, they stumbled into a smithy at the Lizard village? My vote goes with >>3437996, they should engage at range on the terraces, with some Trolls on the paths that snake and switchback around the terraces to the cave.
>>
>>3438047
Not a bad plan. We could throw the weaker trolls on boulder throwing duty and stick the 20 armored trolls on pathways to engage in melee combat.
>>
>>3438265
Agreed, but the throwin' trolls need to be ready to engage if they run out of boulders.
>>
>>3438962
Stick them behind the line when they run out as a last defense and they can reinforce any trolls getting overrun.

Update will be coming tonight, but this is a swift victory for you guys. Let me explain how the battle rolling works:

Each three dice are, in order: Melee, Ranged, Magic. This goes for both sides of the battle. You also get bonuses/maluses according to that stat sheet. Abysmal is -20, struggle is -10, average is +-0, exceptional is +10, specialists is +20. Other things have to be taken into account like numbers, technology etc. which provides bonuses/maluses to all three sides equally with few exceptions. In this case, no such things have been taken into account.

Generally, losses will be calculated taking into account the degrees of success of the winning side for that 'section' of the battle. So you got a 47+20 in Melee and the Lizardfolk got 26, you have 4 degrees of success over them (1 for every difference of 10 between both rolls). You got a 99 in Ranged against the lizards' 70, which provides 1 degree of success. And you got a 82 in Magic against the lizards' 1, which provides 8 degrees of success plus the critfail for the lizards which I don't know how to mechanically get into this.

So, results of the battle:
Melee: 4 degrees of success for the Trolls
Ranged: 1 degree of success for the Trolls
Magic: 8 degrees of success for the Trolls, 1 critfail for the Lizards.

There's a bunch of things I have to iron out. Like taking into account the size of the race and how it correlates to losses incurred, but heh, I'll just use common sense for now and see if I come up with something eventually.

As the mood was growing more tense, something strange happened: A large explosion set off in the midst of the lizardfolk army. Both sides pinned the blame on each other through rude gesturing and eventually the battle was on. The now surprised and disorganized lizardfolk were unable to stand up against our trolls as they charged into their ranks. Our smaller kin threw boulders into their ranks and the oldest and strongest went in with fist, club and tools to give death to the scalies.

Eventually the lizardfolk saw their terrible odds and retreated, heading back to their homes in the eastern valley. We decided to count the dead, over 100 lizardfolk lay dead at our feet. We saw no battle losses, and our wounded were able to recover after a few days. As we recovered, we noticed that the corpses of the lizardfolk were being retrieved, most likely by their own kin who had fled before, or by animals looking for an easy snack. Our people cheered after our great victory over these invading lizardfolk, and the mood was at an all time high.

The tale of Ugni the Dwarf was written in one of the entrance tunnels of our cave network.

>Take the dead lizard folks armor and weapons and see if we apply anything worthwhile to our own designs.
The few lizard corpses that remain have nothing of interest for you. If they did I'll mention directly, no need for research.

Nope, Ungi knew just as much as you about cave networking.

In that case i agree with >>3440594 on what to do.

Alright then. Let's start making some weapons. Swords, spears, or knuckle dusters.

Clubs. We should make some good big clubs out of trees and our ore.

Been away for a bit due to easter week, but I'm gonna get some post in.

One of the boulder throwers during the last battle, Ogi Stone-chucker, has shown himself to be quite competent. He doesn't have many talents aside from stone throwing, but he does it very, very well.

The trolls begin their crafts. They take various chunks of ore and simply shape them around to see what works. The first thing they design is the humble Ore Spear, made from a wooden base with a ore pointy tip. Nearly as tall as a troll and perfect to avoid getting into the thick of the fighting. It's also very cheaply made. The next thing were the Clubs, hunks of ore designed to fit into a troll's hand and with a broader tip to smash whatever it finds in its way. These weapons are basic, but it's better than what we had before, at the very least, thanks to the presence of ore in them.

The lizards' meat tastes foul, but it's serviceable. A good thing to take into account if there's nothing else to eat around.

No worries, glad you're back. Happy Good Friday!
> Improve food acquisition (how?)
We're gonna make another mountain step and plant mountain berries.

As long as that doesn't count as two actions, then I support the motion. If it is two actions, then I support expanding the primitive terrace farms, as we will probably have better luck at doing something we have already done.

Also, not that it matters now, but should the height advantage of the boulder throwers on the terraces have given us a bonus to the Ranged roll? That is to say, are there going to be situational bonus/maluses, or for the sake of simplicity, are they only going to be racial bonus/maluses?

Also, very happy to see that this thread still has legs.

Oh! It is too late now, but I just realized that we should have dumped the lizard corpses in the mushroom caves instead of eating them, or allowing them to be carried off by scavengers.

Live and learn, I guess.

We spend the year slowly chipping at the mountain in order to make a second mountain step. Since we're better at stoneworking now, we're able to finish before the end of the year and plant the berries for the next one.

Much to our surprise, by the end of the year a single of the eastern lizardfolk approach us. He seems humble, only wearing a loincloth and gestures for mercy, pleading in the hisses that characterize his tongue. None of us know the tongue of the lizards, nor have any will to learn, but this situation is nonetheless peculiar. The elders wonder what to do.
