The Spritelings hate the light. They hide in caves and cracks and run down old places, bleeding from the cracks in the walls and coalescing around the shadows.

At night, they rage and raid.

Our job is it to bring the light to them, with torchlight and steel and courage.

It is not an easy task.

In the Crackcrown foothills, reports filter of Spritelings moving with intent. They dig and scour at the bones of the mountain, seeking something. Whatever it is, we cannot let their prying claws find it, and so, we march. Other Lanterns will have arrived before us. It may be that we come to nothing but a clean up. We should still stride to offer as much aid as we can.

The Dig is where we must aim, to disrupt whatever the Spritelings are doing. These old mountains were once scouted by the Devalliers Mercantile Group for their iron ore, but they gave up the venture for misfortune and mismanagement. Something twists, here, draws the Ghasts like a beacon.

Find it. Contain it.
>>
File: MiningMap_2.png (5.46 MB, 2885x2663)
5.46 MB
5.46 MB PNG
We had some old prospectors come in for an interview and did some digging. The Devalliers Mercantile Group tried to break into the iron veins in the Crowncrack some years ago, but the expedition was hunted by ill fortune and grew economically feasible. The rock is hardy and it took much effort to break new ground.

This is a blessing for us.

But the idea of ill-fated mining ventures sit badly with me. Some of the stories sound dangerous. Entire shafts that would collapse or twist in the dark. No ghasts there at the time, and never a sighting. The Devalliers sold the entire thing off to a rich Pytherian speculator and washed their hands.

On the word of the Foreman, this is their professional opinion.

1 is the Burrowing Grounds, where we know that the main activity of Spritelings will be concentrated. This is our target.

From here, all else will flow.

2 is an old climbers hut, set above seam of granite. It would take years and years again to properly excavate that area, so we can count it off as for as Ghasts go. That means the tunnel openings from that face are unlikely in the extreme and the Ghasts would flow in the opposite direction, and seek to use the higher rising of that granite to shied them from the sun. They likely have small, hidden escape tunnels at 3.

4
Their Forage tunnels will lead to the stretch of wood that cling to the hillside and the mountains, and will be close to their primary burrow so that they can bring in fresh meat and scavenge. They will be thin and long, for use by the fleetest, smallest gaunts and not the greater ghasts.

5
The forage tunnels will serve as guard-line too, in the open killing ground in this area. Ghasts on the ridgeline will have superiority of view and they will seek to exploit it by pinning any advance down, and shuffling in new ghasts from the forage tunnels.

Then, once pinned, they will flow around through tunnels:

6
We asked about the sheer cliff-face dead centre, and the suggestion was that it's possible but unlikely that the Ghasts have dug a tunnel there. It is too long a stretch through unreliable ground, and the Crackcrown takes their name from the Cracks - earthquakes shudder the area on occassion, so the rock there is unstable.

7
These are the likelier candidates for guard tunnels dug for bigger ghasts than mere gaunts. This allows reinforcents of the forage area, flow to and from, easy supply of the guards there, is sheltered by the immediate rise so that it is not bombarded by the sun and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, it would allow them to flow around any advances into the killing ground and attack from the rear.

We should expect there to be tunnels here, and, if discovered, we should block them or collapse them.

8
A more likely tunnel, shorter, from the burrows. Gaunts could post here as overwatch, to pelt approchers with rocks and arrows.
>>
>>3418295
Obviously, we should just burn them out.
>>
>>3418374
Probably. But I think we'll need to ignite the purgefire in the heart of their burrow.
>>
>>3418295
Where are we going to arrive from, Command?
Pushing through from the bottom might be... more than a little difficult.

Crackcrown rises into the far sky, a blot that eats the horizon. This smaller foothill is but one of the spikes of earth thrust out from the core of the world, telling us that the Crown itself is still ahead. But here we may find what we are looking for, Spritelings with purpose.

The sounds of steel on steel greet us as we make our way up the steep sides, avoiding scree and pitfalls. Gaunts hiss.

Lanterns, fighting. They must be one of the other Companies, arriving well ahead of us.

Corin breathes in and plants an arrow clean through one of the eight eyes of the Nightgaunt Archer on the ridge. It falls over quietly.

--

With Erica arriving to bolster the line, the Lanterns on the little plateau pick up their stance with a jolt of adrenaline. Caught in a pincer, the Gaunts are cut down quickly. Erica keeps their shield up, warding off the arrow from the Nightgaunt up top.

--

Persipience watches one Gaunt, trailing the ichor of its kin, clamber up the sheer cliff-face. For all that their forms are unusual, one cannot deny that they are also effective. In this terrain, they have a mobility advantage - which one proceeds to aptly demonstrate, landing claw first on top of Scryinsi and tearing into their uniform.

>You are being grabbed ! Get it off get it off!

{Olient}
Lantern! By the flame is it good to see you! But... but you are not Voights company! We saw glints of steel in the forest below, caught in the light, and we expected it to be Voight and his men. We were to meet them here, at the Climber's Hut, and proceed together.

But no sign of them, and the Spritelings grow bolder and the Ghasts crawl closer. We've seen them off for now but Voight is nowhere to be found and we cannot tarry here much longer lest the Light begins to fade!

I'm glad to see a friendly face. Please, where would you want us?

These things are creepy. One of the companymen said it's still light out when I thought it was night already. Then that further up the mountain, the gaunts are causing that darkness?
>>
>>3419176
Something is... concentrating the shadow.
>>
>>3419185
I'll say. Nothing a little flashfire and salt won't solve though I'm certain.
>>
>>3419176
>>3419185
Gaunts are the lower form of Ghast, but in low with ambition. And Gaunts that move beyond their animalistic cunning, gaunts that devour the essence of their kin, gaunts that show tendrils of restrain and shreds of tenacity? Those gaunts may become Darkborn, and ascend to higher existence as NightGaunts.

NightGaunts are the true children of TrDrak, clever, capable and competent. Their resilient hides absorb blows, their bodies are reinforced with slow warping roots of shadow, they don't fear much and they hate the Light.

They wield weapons forged from material shadow, which cut much like steel and take a certain pleasure in serration and other bleeding arts. They favour the Cleaver and the Sword as their Paths, but some can use the Bow. They are not great archers, but each Nightgaunt share a blessing with the Dark and grow stronger in it. Should you be in Shadow, their arrows will strike un-erringly.

Somehow, they can communicate without speech, sharing a semblance of planning and forethought with the shift of shadow. This allows Nightarchers to Mark a Lantern, and then the rain will fall.

Cover helps, as does distance, and in an inversion of what might seem natural to us, NightArchers cannot focus on things close to grand sources of light, which apply a gruelling penalty to their shots.

They are known to use TOXINS to coat their arrows.

Blood.

There, in the shifting darkness.

Blood.

Sun Li-Chen also spots tufts of shadowsilk clinging to the ground, coalesced and concentrate Darkness settling like a dew across the landscape. It falls like rain from the dark heavens. The Ghasts take some small comfort in it, wield it, craft it, eat it, nest in it. Too much of it will cling and eat the Light.

Li-Chen spots a pool of blood but little further aggression form any Ghasts. Sounds float muffled through the darkscape, hinting at many clawing scratching scrabbling Ghasts up ahead where we expect the burrow to be.

And on the edge of that low tide of sound, something... whispering.

--

Persipience moves to hook a fleet Gaunt back to ground level and it loses its fight with gravity. BUt instead of seeking conflict, it bounces to the nearest corpse and gluts itself. Between blinks, the Gaunt snaps, shakes, shudders, flows, different and new and gleeful.

A Change so inexplicably quick hint that Whisperers are near, communicating with the Shadow and the Dark and bringing it closer. The Nightgaunt flexes new found muscle and tests new jagged claws, then shifts and glares at Persipience with baleful new eyes.

No one be hasty here, we've got just a second to breath.

I can make walls somewhere for some temporary protection. Gaunts loath salt, so spilling large amounts of It and creating ample light could deter them to a degree. Forcing your enemy to attack from one direction could be useful to manage the numbers, until our position Is taken down. It'd buy us time and relieve pressure at best while we get a foothold.

Our objective Is to the NorthWest, but It might be best to secure the Northeast first as charging Into the middle Is suicide.

It might also be something to note that the Local In his house might be able to aid us. Or he might yell at us to go away as the Gaunts eat us alive but It could be worth a shot. It's rather curious why he hasn't been taken by the swarm, he must have something substantial to deter them.

Thoughts brothers?

Gaki are the greedy ghasts, the lowest of all the types of gaunt.

And yet, for all that, they are also batteries of Shadow. They consume it, store it, find it, fight for it, hunt for it, become it and bring it, then, as willing feed cattle, to the Whisperers.

Or to the Light, in a silent detonation of Darkness.

Give them a chance and they will run at a Lantern, to end their own existence in a massive release of pent up shadow-stuff.

Command, a few of us are squabbling amongst ourselves about the fine details of moving and we were hoping you could set the record straight, this Information Is pertinent to making a successful course of action.

Some of us think that once you move your speed, you must spend 1AP per tile you move as a regular move, not a Step.

Some of us think (Including myself) that once you've moved your speed, you spend 1AP to regain move equivalent to your speed, or you can spend 1AP to take a Step as a 'Safe movement'.

My confusion arises from the Step. When you take a Step It costs 1AP, moves 1 tile and prevents reaction attacks (and possibly tripping traps? Unsure of that one). If this Is the case, then a regular move costing 1AP as well Is confusing to me.

Are all movements after your speed considered safe 'Step's, or do can you spend 1AP to regain regular move equivalent to your speed?

Sorry about this.
>>
>>3420802
Move up to your speed at no AP cost.
Every tile after that costs 1 AP.

>There was a world where you could move = speed per AP spent, but in that world, everyone was apparently a ultra sprinter. This is not that world.

Move up to speed.
1 AP per tile after.

Moving with Speed is hustling jog. Moving with AP is a "Step". Step is also what you get in the Iron Circle, at -2 per step taken before or after your swing.

This is important: enemies armed with weapons will get reaction attacks if you speed away from them.

If you are really worried about stepping on traps being hit by enemies triggering overwatches falling down pits don't move with speed

Secure the burrowing grounds
--

Lightblind and bombarded by our ally-star, the Spritelings are sluggish in their reponse. Some stumble, half insensate from the rush to their senses. Others tighten the grib on their weapons and turn to face us.

As the Flare glides down through the sky, the shadows deep and some Ghasts fade back into their darkness.

--

A pair of Gaki tumble off the side of a ledge and land, cackling, feet first in a salt-trap that burns at their essences. Shadowstuff splatter the cliff-face, flanking averted by Wryneck's previous prescient preparation.

The Archer Wryneck faces blinks eight eyes against the rush of pain and refocuses, trying to bat the attacker away but makes no headway.

--

Erica spots more dead lanterns from Voight Company, each and all went down fighting. Their bodies look pilfered, their sacks searched. But inbetween all our fallen allies is something curious. A stranger. A blow has made calamitous ruin of their face, but they do not wear a lantern uniform.

--

Cracking and breaking open, the cliff-side reveals the expected Guard Tunnels and a pair of Nightblades that step forward, swinging their heavy choppers in wide blows. Big Unz bears the worst of their initial assault, and then the pair locks shields and raises them high.

--

Ngiervos Lantern Light has also revealed an escape cut into the side of the rock. Nothing sounds from it. Perhaps the Ghasts do not feel the need to flee.

Having prepared a SIZABLE explosive, Corin remembers a few lessons from that time the Lanterns had a Trencher Instructor come by for some hands on demolitions training.

>Explosives detonate and halve their value for every size, rounding up. A 6d3 explosion has an effective killing range of maybe 2x2 but will be dangerous far beyond that.

>Like any Weapon, Explosives can be Iron Circled. Naturally you can't take " An Extra Attack " with one, because you only have the one explosive to throw, but you can time your moment just right and get +damage, step or try to land it on somewhere specific. +Damage is the most dangerous, relevant application.

No. You Crossguard a Parry or Crossguard a Block. This has no further Ap cost above a normal parry or block, but there are some instances (isolated though they may be) where you wouldn't want to Crossblock or Crossparry.

So just note that you're doing it and all is well.

Whallop: Any Stun on the Target is applied as +damage on your hit

Stun: Stun depletes Speed and AP. Stun has value. 4 Stun would cost 4 AP or 4 SPD or some combination to "Clear" before one could act normally.

Whallop + Stun: You hit a target with 4 STUN on them. They take +4 Damage.

Mace Smash: Damage inflicts stun.
Mace Whallop: Stun is + Damage

Mace Whallop Stun: I have no skull and I must die.

How to best use:

Swing once with Smash to layer on Stun, perform an Extra Attack to Whallop. Have someone else Stun for you. Attack Twice, once with Smash and the follow up to crush something.

I didn't know that and I wonder if I can do anything similar with my bow. Can I see the ghoul in the valley from where I am?
>>
>>3422426
Your bow has no maximum range.

But if you sweep your senses down in the lower left corner, a note says -1 / 4 .

For each 4 tiles, the Bow takes -1 to hit. If you were to fire a target 12 tiles away, the shot is at -2 (the first 4 tiles at at -0, so, no penalty). Natural cover and obstacles also provide a little bit of protection from arrows.

As Darkness increases, this penalty grows worse. It will soon be -1 every 3. As for the ghoul, yes.
>>
But, Command hears the faint hark on the wind,
but what is this? No natural range for bows? Why are we not beset by the falling death of Nightarchers?

One cannot fire at what one cannot sense. No NightArchers have eyes on you.

Lanterns can usually see everything displayed on the map, or rely on the vision of allies to zone in their shots. Since bows can arc, one can handily fire up and down and over walls in this way. If firing "blind" (eg: no direct line of sight), all penalties double.

Once NightArchers have you in their sight, they will fire at you.
But Command, the pack earlier kept missing!

Lanterns, Lantern. NightArchers cannot see directly into the light. The old belt lantern wards off their shots better than shields and outrageous good luck. They take all the penalties for firing blind that we do. But don't grow complacent because of this - it only takes so many shots for them to get lucky and not all of us wear a lantern. And if we are in Shadow, they get a bonus to land their shots.

The lines clash, weapons flash and people fall. The Nightblades step into the shadow of the climber hut and meet steel as Big Unz, Jal and Halvar fall upon them. One takes a truly staggering amount of punishment but, blinking and spitting blood, rears to its full height in gross defiance of our efforts.

Halvar swings and swings again, as Spot tries to break the shield out of alignment. Yet the canny Gaunt behind it twist and flicker in the shadow of its kin.

BUt only for so long and then it shield breaks, leaving it vulnerable! Quite timeful too, as Teliel throws a splatter of salt that explodes against the cliff, showering the nightgaunts (And everyone else).

--

Spraying ichor around itself from multiple gruelling wounds, the Nightblade refuses to die and swings at Unz and Jal in a cleaving swipe that blows through their defences.

Its ally has less battle-luck, but a sharp kick from a clawed feet send Spot back, while Halvar is forced to fend off a probing series of strikes.

--

A Gaki rolls close to Olient, who, out of the corner of her vision, dashes away from it just as it erupts in a cacophony of silence. The Whisperer has been waiting for this moment and barks out a sharp, sibilant syllable.

Scryinsi's torch fades. The Shadowstuff, clinging and cloying, bends and whips through the air like maddened tendrils. But instead of flaying they strike wounds and the wounds close in an infusion of ichor.

--

The Gwyllions sprint in from the right, and reach into tattered uniforms they have stolen from fallen friends. One steps a little too close to Erica and she makes it regret its decision.

--

Saltburned and wrestling, Wryneck ducks a swipe from a bow in time to see the Whisperer attempt an incantation that fails and burns out because of the salt beneath its feet.

Ghouls are what all Gaunts aspire to be. Towering manifestations of the hunger of the dark ocean, Ghouls stomp across the field, above the concerns of their lesser kin.

But no brute this, but a commander, a beacon, a rallying point for all Ghasts.

They seek to satiate their yawning hunger in cold, calculated displays of feasting. And unlike all lesser Ghasts, this Greater Ghast has understood one thing about the world:

Fire may burn.
But fire itself is not to be feared.

It will heedlessly march against fire, spark and torch because, once within its reach, it can eat the light itself.

They do.

He pours some tea with delicate, precise motions and waves you in. There is no other chair available, so you sink unto the bed. It is surprisingly comfortable. Is this pytheri silkweave?

The Innumerable knows I am not for Them. I am marked by Another. I have many regrets. That is one. Yet it affords an old man a measure of peace.

He stirs the tea, long digits moving in a perfect circle. The aroma fills the little hut. The cup appears fine porcelain. Tiny vines dance in myriad colours along the base, each etched in agonising detail. You find yourself trailing them with your eyes as they weave in and out of each other

You are less brash than your companion. I offered Captain Voight shelter for his men in my home, to wait out the incoming Darkness but he insisted. Purposeful. Driven. Tenacious. A true warrior.

A damnable fool.

One does not encroach upon a entrenched enemy position across open ground when they have prepared fallbacks. Yet, your Captain Voight would not listen.

The screaming ceased but an hour ago.

He moves the tea cup towards you. The liquid inside barely sloshes with the movement. The wafting warmth bears the faint trace of lemon and herbs. You gain +2 Focus, above and beyond normal allotment.

The young and ambitious and bold. I once believe the world would run out of graves for them. I was seldom wrong. But here I have been.

You bear the scars of the Dark. That arm. Bonded Steel. One wonders how you came by that arm. If the sacrifice was worth it. I have found that mine seldom were. You have been to the House? Tell me, then, Lantern. What is it like?

He leans back, sipping his tea, eyes closed in a serene expression of contentment

>{Understand} Vast and organised, each smith seeks Knowledge - and each gear of insight work together to build the systems of the world but what do they grind down?
>{Notice} I saw Bondsmiths and Bondmasters scrabble over designs, over plans, over resources. Dust coated corners all had forgotten, layered books none had opened in years while others were ripped from use. Such tension. But what orders do they strive to fullfill?
>{Focus} It whispered in my sleep, when the drugs saw to the binding of flesh and this new dead-alive arm. The House. Softly. It was grand and old and lonely. And it hurts, from broken Bonds. I think it wanted me to Pledge one.

They all do, Lantern. Each and all. And that is why they . . . Scrabble?

he laughs

Yes. Scrabble. Like so many gentle jewel-polishers, wiping slow cloth across the same metal bit to make it shine and shine and shine and all yet, rub it down layer by layer, in their search for Understanding. The House, so grand and old. One day they will understand that it is not a House at all. Maybe one day, in whispers half heard as you wake, you will attain focus enough to truly hear it, for a brief flash.

But you are too kind. I am an old, lonely man, quiet and away from the wars and the world. I tend to my dog, these days and wait for Death to come and try these old bones in that final conflict we must all face.

Yet my dog is missing. Your Captain Voight promised to look for it, at the Burrow Grounds where the Innumerable dig their claws. He did honour me that much, that brave foolish soldier.

brief, staggering sorrow flits across the old man's face

Do an old man an honour, Lantern? Find you my noble companion out there in the violent Night, bring him home to me. If he has not met Death or the Dark, then I would have him back at my fireplace.

--

The Gwyllions scamper forward, each with a small prepared package of death which they lob at the Lanterns. The blooming light of flashfires wash across our defensive line as it burns. The Gwyllions shy away from the flames which give Jal the opening he needs, trailing fire, to strike at them. The swing moves one into the other and both into a cunningly prepared set of traps that go off on the contact, spraying shrapnel and spikes. The Gwyllions are sorely wounded!

--

Olient and Toskin take down a Gaunt in unison, and another Gaunt in the backline quietly falls over as its ichor drains from monstrous wounds. But the Whisperers are recovered now in earnest, and weave their shadow-fed arts together. The Darkness thickens and our lantern light slows its penetration, bits of sheer night bubbling at the edges of our little glowing circles.

--

Below, a Ghoul rises in all its abominable horror and moves with long strides up the hill. It reaches out and wrenches a giant bit of wood from the fallen tree Jal attacked earlier, beginning to slow wind-up of its massive arms.

--

the Nightblade that Halvar kicked down the ramp gets to its feet and steps back into the shadowstuff the Gaki became, its form shifting and insubstantial.

Salt and flame and fury. The Ghasts gather in the Darkness to claw at the Earth but we will root them out, step by step.

Wryneck's target flinches out of the way but some fragments of salt still sting at the shadows floating around the Whisperer while Ngiervos finally finishes off a reeling Nightarcher.

Teliel gathers the flame, focusing pinpricks of heat, eyes wide with the sign of the Flame. The Ghoul is Quite Big and therefore hard to miss, but the lumbering giant can stil move with all the rapidity of falling night and shifts, some of the exploding oil splatters across the arm it uses to shield itself.

But Ghouls do not Fear the Flame. It Roars.

Erica finishes off a Gwyllion while the others fall upon the remaining Gwyllion, which, battered and violated, refuses to die.

>>3424287
Jal considers the Nature of Salt - it burns at the essence of the Ghasts, and inflicting Discomfort and some minor Stun - and should they fall from blows infused with it, it will eat at the ichor they spill until it is useless to other Ghasts. This way, we can reap a field of corpses and not worry about leaving them bubbling behind us.

CALLING A SHOT

Every fool with a weapon can hit a target by taking their time and planting their feet. AP and Focus spent on Aiming ensures that your hit probability remains consistently high and for shots you absolutely must make, you stand little chance of missing.

But hitting and killing are different Arts, Lantern. Let us shed some light.

A NORMAL ATTACK occurs when you use your skill to strike. It has all the effects of your weapon.

A MODIFIED ATTACK is when you use the Iron Circle to strike. It modifies the outcome of your normal strike.

A CALLED STRIKE is when you target a specific area. This modifies the outcome of the attack further, depending on what you are targeting. The standards are

-3
Features of the Target:
Large, easily recognizable features such as limbs, feet, legs, tentacles, shields. Planting shots here allow the destruction of feature-related capability. Shoot a Ghoul in the Hand and it cannot throw rocks at you. Shoot a Gaunt in the leg and it cannot run. Your damage has a chance of CRIPPLING that feature, or damaging it. This is useful. Killing a Ghoul outright is a staggeringly difficult task, but features have FRACTIONS OF TOTAL HP and are therefore easier to isolate and destroy.

-6
Details:
Details of the target are smaller and harder to hit. This is such things as small prayer amulets, pins on grenades, eyes, gaps in armor-plate, spots known for vulnerability. Hitting here increases raw injury, incurs debilitation and maims the target. NIGHTBLADEs wear heavy Nightplate. One could shoot for a gap by aiming at -6.

-9
Killshots - or "Vitals".

Every creature that squirms beneath the sun and stars are bound by the truths of morphology: Some ordered structure must exist to maintain it. Disrupt the structure and it will end. This is an overly dramatic way of saying that hearts, brains, spines and other vital points can be targetted. Landing blows here induce stunning, maiming, extra damage, crippling stat reductions and extreme pain.

-3
Objects.
This is technically a feature, but is worth considering on its own - Gaunts are fond of targetting your TORCHES with their rocks and ichor spit, to extinguish them. Nightblades will happily BEAT ASIDE your weaponry. Nightarchers delight in shooting for LANTERNS. If you face a heavily armored, blocking Nightblade, you may wish to consider striking at its SHIELD or at its WEAPON. Logically, if one tries to BLCOK or PARRY strikes aimed at the very thing doing the defending, it has little effect. This allows you to break shields, shatter weapons, render arms obsolete and destroy Gwyllion Grenades before they are thrown at you.

but
Precision is hard.
Penalties accrue rapidly.
-9 to hit a Vital Spot at range 7 in normal darkness (-1 every 3) is already a -11 shot!

Erica has time to scan the corpse beneath her feet, an odd looking one. The ruined face doesn't give much away, but the garb is a different story, all angled plates and knives in tactical places. Blades layer this one like others wear amulets and jewellery. And the wounds are not from Ghasts but from Lantern blades. A bandit? Here? Shattered vials contain odd chemicals and beneath the armor, something curious - a bondsteel hand, still gripping the sword it must have pulled from a lantern and crushed. No bandit then, this. Some... other force.

--

Corin considers called shots.
Corin considers the dripping ichor mixed with frothing blood and glass shards from a Gwyllion deciding on one final insult as it hits every stolen fireflash vial at once, blowing itself sky high and hammering Jal and Hurric with bones and blood.

Teliel isn't much affected by the rush of heat and Halvar shelters behind him.

--

From the corner of their eyes, Scryinsi sees a Nightcleaver roar a challenge and launch itself into the sky, bringing its heavy two-handed weapon down in a shattering blow to rend armored Brotherhood Knights in two.

Scryinsi takes it on the shield.

The Nightcleaver looks rather surprised, all told.

From the dark, a projectile flies through the gathered Lanterns - a rock hurled with enormous strength. The GHOUL is awake.

--

Seilis already knew this, because a Ghoul has wrapped its fingers around her and is squeezing. She screams.

--

Ngiervos notices his torch dimning as Wryneck's shudders and dies! The fire from the oil flickers and extinguishes, as the Whisperers work in unison against the encroachment of the Flame.

Relight the fire, Lanterns! Show them the LIGHT!

>>3425302
Halvar looks at his relatively clean boots in bemusement before scanning his splattered upper torso
"Ah, apologies, and i am halvar, may i ask what leaf that tea is brewing from?"
"...do you mind if my spot bleeds on your floor a moment until i can patch her wounds? She's a good girl, really, she'd avoid the bleeding altogether if she could help it. She deserves better than a soul stained master such as me, i can say"
>>
>>3425324
Yes, most soldiers bleeding would but find the trick beyond them. The sight of blood is not unfamiliar to me.

Shall the Night outside lead to such rending, it must be Dark indeed. I would be a poor . . . expatriate on the sufferance of your government if I denied you the aid.

But mind the sheets. They take an age to clean

A smalhamlet in the sunsoaked southern grasslands. You would not know of it, Lantern.

You would have no reason to go.
There is little there now. The Theurges saw to that.

I have many regrets. Leaving was not one. Returning is. I had thought to put my spear, but it was not to be.

Sometimes, I marvel at their lack of proportionality. Sometimes, I almost think I understand.

As neither of you intend to leave, you may know that my name is Venitivios.

He pauses, listening to something far away while his brown eyes stare clean through you. Eventually, as you do not react, he smiles.

Your colleague with the scavenged Bondsystem went looking for my companion Certus. I fear that Certus may face Death in the night. It prowls the shadows, probing for an opening.

So loyal, these creatures are. And we repay them with war and wounds. I should have some salve here. A kindly herbalist traded it to me to take care of Certus when he rough and tumbles with the hill-goats and comes home, layered in dust and bruises.

The strength of youth.

you have managed to scavenge 2 gear above and beyond your usual allotment. Trade it in for flashfires, bandages, a thrown knife or some other small utility.

This man has a tattoo of a coiling flame bound across his wrist, in verdant, profound colour. It squirms as you brush your fingers across it and against the coldness of the beginning night and the body, it is faintly warm.

You do not know what this is.

But this man was no bandit, and this is the clear sign. The Empyreal Flame, the Unblinking Eye, is an Icon revered in Pyther, the City of the Flame, and those that adorn themselves with the coiling sigil of this Icon are fanatical adherents of the flame.

But what did this man do here?

And more, why is he dead to a lantern's blade. He has the build of a fighter.

>You may exchange your Belt Lantern for this man's Alchemineering kit, should you wish.

on the left flank, the wretchweave rears on its hindlegs, slick plates sliding and clicking and then it brings its multi-jointed feet down and leaps. Ngiervos ducks one sweep, two sweeps, but the third catches him square in the chest and the Nigthblade behind him exploit the oppertunity.

Venitivios has a missing dog, Certus

--

The massive Ghoul swings it battering fists against the line of defenders. In the chaos, Scryinsi frees itself from its grasp as salt thrown by Persipience burns into the creature. Their bulwark comes up just in time for a massive raking attack to slam against it with incredible force, the wood and metal of the stalwart shield buckling under the pressure. Scryinsi's entire arm feels numb in the aftershock of impact.

And yet, he stands.

Toskin and Olient let loose a flurry of blades against the Ghoul but its thick hide turn their attacks aside.

--

Ngiervos and Persipience scan the ridgelines, waiting for an opening. In the dark, things shift and shudder as the shadows move. And there, a slight glint of light on metal.

--

The WretchWeave slams two blades into Li-Chen then rolls across the landscape, seeking to hide somewhere else.

--

Odd, discoloured smoke boil from the climber's hut.

>HALVAR IS MISSING.

--

Percipience spots the makings of a trap they did not set, small vials carefully cut together with loaded wire and a few bits of dirt to cover. They look much like the ones that Erica found on the fallen stranger, corrosive chemicals set for the unwary.

on the bed, Spot shifts and whines quietly and rises into a different pose as the whine turns into a hunting growl

Venitivios coughs, one hand probing for the longspear leaning against the wall.

You shout for Spot to run.

But.

It seems she has something else entirely on her mind at present

The Terror Fades With Time.

You can aim for as long as you like. Your target might move out of sight. The symbol is either one in your corner, of +4 Aim or the one in the top left corner which is the burrowing grounds to which we must apply salt and light.

Two gaunts is a Nightgaunt (And other things form Nightgaunts, besides)
One Gaunt and Time and Partial Failure is a Gwyllion, a nightgaunt runt

Nightgaunts fed on the flesh of their kin to excess can become Ghouls, although they take time to properly mature. The one Teliel helped blow up was not yet accustomed to its new power, and so, was easy prey. The one grabbing Scryinsi and Hurric is older, wiser, has more hide.

The Spritelings are the Ghasts and the Ghasts are the Gaunts first in all their form and from the Gaunts you get the Others. But all gaunts are spritelings, even if all spritelings are not gaunts. The Ghasts are many and become the fewer Greater Ghasts, which finally become the Spritelings.

The dividing line is the Ghouls.

Once a Gaunt becomes a Nightgaunt becomes a Ghoul, they slowly ascend beyond the thriving throng of normal Shadows and become, in truth, what we call Spriteling, a concentrated, coalesced blot on the world. Ghouls are abject horrors in waiting, little cells of monstrosity before their first division. They eat and eat and eat and eat and once they have fed themselves on something they become Gorged, blessed by the Dark, and they begin their true ascension. Their forms cannot be counted. Their manifestations cannot be known. Context, feeding and essence shapes their form.

We can talk about Gaunts, Gwyllions, Gaki, Wretchweavers and Ghouls and even sometimes the Gorged because they can be known, they're consistent, there is a sharp to the dark that they become. But beyond that...

Beyond that is something else.

If you see a Gorged, Nightblessed and a Horror-In-Waiting, you destroy it before it Becomes.

Or you hold your torches tight and pray.

Teliel kindles the flame but the Eye is distracted - Jal D throws a bag of Salt that was poorly tied, scattering the stuff all over Teliel and Hurric and Big Unz. It is mildly unpleasant, given the scraps and scrapes the night has caused.

You Think Things Carefully Through

Toskin and Olient were waiting with Seilis. If she had been Consumed, they would too. So are all our allies our enemies?

These Lanterns are dead by blade and cut and ambush. But you have found a curious TRAP set by a SOPHISTICATED HAND. Much like your own craft, but this one intended for heavily armored prey. Seilis does not reek of chemicals.

To lose the Flares is suspicious in the extreme. But she would not have the means to throw a Gas Grenade through a window - you saw her kit earlier, and she does not have these items on her unless she hid them with exceptional competence.

Seilis did not throw the bomb, you deduce
She did not set this trap you deduce
However, you think it possible she may have slain other Lanterns.

She may be a Ghast in Disguise.

But if she, she fakes the mein of someone with an infatuation quite well. The Ghasts do not understand Love, over much.

A Nightglaive sprints from the dark to strike at Ngiervos, who ducks out of the way and counter-swings. But tendrils of shadow begin to grasp at the agile warriors feet, and the next dodge will not come so easy.

The Ghoul rears back and strikes a staggering blow that drives Scryinsi to their knees, world bending for a moment with the power of the impact. The Bulwark begins to show the strain.

Friends, listen!
We're pushing a line out of the hut, and you're currently OUTSIDE THE LINE.
Get behind us, hell, fall back to the hut if you have to, and get yourselves patched up. Dying now, so close to a breakthrough, would be a damn shame.

Friends, priority is killing this ghoul, and then falling back to the hut. Clean corpses as you go, the last thing we need to deal with is another ghoul.
They'll put out our nice little housefire, you see.
