/qst/ - Quests

In the far future, biotechnology advances by leaps and bounds, creating stunning achievements in medical, civil, and military applications. Illness becomes a thing of the past, and genetic modification is as commonplace as cosmetic surgery.

However, like all great advances, unchecked progress and experimentation has led to abuse and corruption. Ultra powerful megacorporations that monopolized the latest biotech have risen to be the great powers of the age, waging secret wars of sabotage, espionage, and deceit to get ahead of each other.

In order to fuel their rampant growth, megacorps develop lethal diseases and viruses, horrific bio-organic abominations, and ever more exotic genetic modifications to both sell to the highest bidder and unleash upon each other.

The rampant proliferation of bioweapons, and the need to contain them, has given rise to a new profession, the BIOWEAPON HUNTER.

You are LEWIS, a Hunter specializing in hunting down biological threats with your T-Doll companion HK!

Currently, you were on the last leg to your long drive to Mom's ranch, the most isolated and secluded place you knew. Next to you was Lucina, softly asleep in the passenger side after you finally convinced her she should let you have a turn.

Soon the roads become increasingly less paved, until soon enough you were pretty much driving on dirt road. A sure sign you were almost at your destination.

You start thinking back. This whole little getaway had been really quick and literally planned on the spot. You certainly didn't have a lot of time to explain things to the others.

Lucina managed to handle all the gruntwork, playing the whole thing off as an extended "undercover investigation", necessitating her dropping off the grid for a day or two. You weren't certain if putting Barry temporarily in charge was a good idea, but ST-AR could probably make sure he wouldn't get into too much trouble.

Lucina even managed to convince the Boss that this was all part of a job she hired you out to, as well.

Still, you already were doing this without informing Mom or Carol. And for this, you had been debating on whether to tell anybody else about where you were really going. In the end...

I can think of three:

>The Tree House where everyone played
>A place on the ranch where that was stupidly dangerous (Cave Systems, Alice's Doomsday Bunker, etc.), and held a dare to see who could last longest
>The place where The Incident happened so they can confront the past

You didn't tell anybody else exactly where you were going. After all, you didn't really want anybody disturbing your little day off.

And on cue, the ranch starts to come into view and you swerve onto the long, dirt driveway to leading up to it. As you pull up to the main house, you nudge Lucina awake.

"Hey, Lucy, we're here." You tell her.

"Huh?" Lucina blinks groggily before regaining her senses. "Ah! How long was I asleep?!"

"Not too long, don't worry about it." You assure her as you park the car.

Immediately, the door opens and Springfield steps out, a smile on her face.

"Oh! Lewis, Lucina! I didn't know you would be arriving today!" She says cheerfully, not even seeing a problem with your unannounced arrival.

"Ah, right, of course your mom would leave her behind t take care of the place." Lucina mumbles.

"Don't worry, I don't think she's got any reason to disturb us." You assure her and turn to Springfield. "Is that right?"

"I'm a caretaker, not a spy, if that's what you mean!" Springfield giggles. "Don't worry, I'll take care of all your things. Will you two be sleeping separately or together?"

"W-what?!" Lucina stammers.

Something about Springfield's knowing smile led you to suspect she was more clued in to the situation than you initially realized...

"Together, of course." You grin.

"W-what?!" Lucina blanches.

"Perfect! I can temporarily repurpose the master bedroom then!" Springfield chimes as she casually unloads all of your luggage from the car. "Please! Make yourselves at home!"

"Lewis, what the hell?!" Lucina glowers her face a nice light shad of pink as she elbows you in the chest. "Why did you tell her that?"

"Well, you didn't refuse, did you?" You cheekily point out.

"You-!" Lucina grumbles, knowing that what you said was true. "Jeez, when did you get so confident all of a sudden?"

"A lot of stuff changed." You remark vaguely.

"Obviously." Lucina sighs. "All right, it looks like your mom's Doll is handling unpacking, so what should we do?"

"Well, there is that old, hidden bunker we came across." You note. "The one we couldn't figure out how to open before?"

"Oh riiiiight!' Lucina's eyes light up. "That hatch hidden in the barn, right?"

"That's the one." You nod. "I wonder if we could find a way to open now...."

"Well, we certainly are a lot bigger now, that's for sure." Lucina says happily.

"You're really looking forward to this, aren't you?" You raise an eyebrow.

"It was always a mystery on what was in side!" Lucina says excitedly. "I guess you can say it's triggering my investigative instincts!"

The two of you head to the barn, where you make a beeline to one of the abandoned stables and brush away the old hay littering the ground, exposing an old, metal hatch.

It looked just as solid as ever. To the side, there was a modern electronic keypad, as well as what looked to be a manual override keyhole.

Yeah, this was still going to be a tough nut to crack.

You grip the handles on the hatch and pull with all your might. You can feel the hatch creaking and warping under the pressure, but it manages to hold against even your enhanced strength.

"Okay, big boy, looks like you need a little help." Lucina sighs as she steps forward.

"Come on, Lucy, I got this-"

Lucina then grips the handles alongside you and pulls as well. The moment she does so, something gives, and the hatch flies open, revealing a concrete staircase leading down into a dark tunnel.

"So, big boy, you want me to go first?" Lucina smirks. "There might be big spooky ghosts down there."

Fortunately, there didn't appear to be any sort of hidden dangers or traps. However, the hallway is dark and the stairs are rather steep. You see Lucina stumble and you quickly reach down to grab her shoulder to steady her.

"Thanks." Lucina mumbles. "It's so damn dark down here..."

"There's gotta be a light switch." You point out.

"Yeah, just a second."

You can see the faint outline of Lucina reaching her arm out, her hands running across the wall.

"Found it!"

Suddenly, your eyes are filled with blinding light and...

It's quite the sight. It's a simple, concrete bunker, built like a doomsday shelter. There were crates of supplies, ventilation equipment, water tanks, portable generators, and even three cots set off to the side. More than enough resources to keep a small family going for months, maybe even years.

What also catches your eye is an old computer, a heavy, locked steel door, and a smaller passage veering off to the side. If your sense of direction was right, it should lead back towards the house.

"Huh, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that your mom has a prepper bunker." Lucina puts her hands on her hips. "Still, this seems like a bit of overkill..."

You head over to the computer while Lucina wanders over to the door. You hit the power key to the machine and are a little surprised that it boots up just fine. Despite its age, it looks like it was still fairly well maintained.

However, as the boot sequence progresses, you notice it pause and give a prompt.

BIOMETRIC READING REQUIRED

Huh, looks like it had some serious security for an old computer. You glance at the blinking thumb reading device on the desk. You wonder if Mom ever keyed your DNA into it. Then again, with your Invader genes, you might be able to spoof her DNA entirely if you wanted.

"Hmmmmmm." Lucina pauses and glances at the door again. "You know what, I guess you're right. We have to save at least a little mystery here."

Lucina glances at the second passage.

"So, I'm guessing that leads back to the house." She surmises. "Makes sense, since if this was a panic bunker, you'd want an easier way to get in than trying to run across the yard to reach the barn."

"Yeah, I"m guessing that, too." You nod, sitting down on one of the cots. "Still, never knew Mom went out of the way to build all this."

You don't resist as Lucina presses her lips against yours, her breath and skin hot to the touch.

You're not sure how much time has passed once Lucina finally breaks off, but when she does, her face is completely flushed red.

"You have no idea how long I've wanted to do that." She squeaks.

"Oh, I think I have an idea." You tease.

"Your mom is so going to kill me." She sighs.

"She can try." You point out.

"And... you're not put off about this?" Lucina wonders, keeping her face close to yours.

"Why would I be?" You wonder.

"I mean, back then, when it was clear I was different from you and Nemo..." Lucina bites her lip.

"It's ancient history, Lucy." You assure her. True, you did feel betrayed and jealous when you found out Lucina was supposed to be better than you in every way, but, well, that was a lot of years ago. Things had changed since then.

"Yeah, well, Nemo was still bitter about it." Lucina sighs. "And you know how she can hold a grudge."

"Don't worry, I know what it's like to have a really strong sister, too." You chuckle.

Lucina finally gets off of you and lies down flat on her back next to you, staring up at the dimming sky.

"It's just so weird. I'm so nostalgic for those old days, but the more I think about it, everything was so messed up with all that drama..."

You then feel her hand clasping yours.

"But hearing you say that it doesn't bother you anymore... that really made me relieved, you know?"

There's a brief silence as a cool breeze blows over the hill, rustling the grass and sending loose leaves flying.

"Well, as long as we're being honest with each other..." You squeeze Lucina's hand. "Turns out, I'm not exactly normal either."

"Huh?" Lucina blinks, looking at you curiously.

"I only found this out recently myself, but it turns out that I have Invader DNA. Like, the pure kind. I'm part Invader." You finally tell her, every word feeling like a weight being taken off your chest.

"R-really...." Lucina pauses. "Huh."

"You don't seem to surprised." You raise an eyebrow.

"Well, I've always suspected you were using black market or unregistered biomods. Most Hunters do, you know." Lucina explains. "N-not that it made me think any less of you or anything!"

"Uh huh." You nod, unconvinced.

"And, well, that just makes me wonder how you got Invader DNA in the first place." Lucina narrows her eyes. "I wouldn't be surprised if it was another experiment from my mom. Or... does it have something to do with yours?"

"Man... we have really fucked up moms, don't we?" You groan.

"You're telling me." Lucina sighs. "So, I guess that means we're both freaks, huh? At least we have that much in common."

"Heeeeeey! Dinner's ready!" You hear Springfield call out in the distance. "Better come while it's still hot!"

"Ah, well, guess we can just be freaks together, huh?" You smile as you get up.

"Yeah... together." Lucina smiles and stands up as well, still keeping your hand gripped in hers.

Morning comes as the early sunlight filters through the bedroom window. You wince a little, but start to rouse from your slumber.

It's then that you notice and remember Lucina was in bed with you, her arms wrapped around you and snoring softly. Guess she was really short on sleep.

You also note that...

Neither of you were wearing clothes. It was then that memories of last night started coming back to you. Nothing specific, but a vivid blur of heat, motion, and instinct.

And now, you could feel Lucina's bare and very warm body pressing against your back. Your first instinct is to wonder if this is Carol playing another prank on you, but your logic quickly catches up and reminds you that it's impossible. Carol was practically an ocean away. And even then, you doubt Carol could match the sincerity you could feel from Lucina's grip on you.

You look to the side of the room, where you could see that silly dinosaur onesie you got as a gift for Lucina thrown haphazardly over a chair. You remember Lucina had actually worn it as a "favor" to you last night, but at some point it had been hastily, almost violently taken off and discarded.

You were still trying to make sense of what happened when you hear a soft knock on the door.

"Lewis? Lucina?" Springfield's voice emanates from the opposite side. "I'm preparing breakfast. It should be ready in a few minutes!"

Lucina mumbles something incoherent.

You carefully and quietly slip out of Lucina's grasp, figuring she could use a few more minutes of sleep. You quietly tiptoe to the bathroom for a quick shower and change of clothes before exiting the bedroom. As expected, you see Springfield working the kitchen, the smell of pancakes and bacon filling the air.

"Good morning, Lewis!" Springfield says happily. "Are you all right? It seemed like you and Lucina didn't get much sleep last night!"

"You don't have to keep playing dumb, Springfield." You sigh. "I know you're here to do more than just cook and clean for Mom."

"Quite observant of you." Springfield keeps smiling. "I'm sure Alice would be thrilled that not only did you rekindle your relationship with Lucina, but you consummated it on her very own bed!"

"Yeah, 'thrilled.'" You groan, now the regret phase kicking in.

"Oh, don't worry, I doubt she'll do much. Springfield says cheerfully as she switches off the stove, letting the bacon sizzle on the pan for a few seconds longer. "I'm sure you've figured out by now that despite her thorny behavior she has quite the soft heart."

"I am a bit aware of that, yeah." You nod, sitting down at the table. "So... has it been lonely out here with her gone?"

"I'm not programmed to be bothered by being left alone." Springfield tuts as she piles the bacon and pancakes into separate plates. "But the days aren't quite as... eventful."

"Nnnnn, is that breakfast?" Lucina mumbles as she stumbles out of the bedroom, rubbing her eyes. You note that she's not properly dressed, only having put on a pair of shorts and one of your shirts.

"Yep." You nod. "And you're finely dressed this morning."

"Shut up, it's not often I can just slack off like this." Lucina mumbles as she takes her own seat.

"Well, let's dig in!" You say as Springfield sets down the plates in front of you, as well as jugs of milk and juice.

"Oh my god it looks so good." Lucina's mouth waters as she takes a bite of pancake. "It IS good!"

"Why thank you!" Springfield giggles.

"You know, I wonder if I could somehow get Nemo to download cooking software into ST-AR..." Lucina muses.

"She doesn't seem to be the type to appreciate that." You point out.

"Well, it's not entirely a bad idea." You admit. "Nothing wrong with picking up more skills."

"Right?" Lucina chuckles right as a phone rings.

"What? You've got your phone on?" You raise an eyebrow. "I thought we were on a vacation here."

"I'm so sorry." Lucina blanches. "This an emergency phone. This is only supposed to ring if something serious happens." Lucina fumbles with the phone briefly and picks it up. "Barry, what happened?"

You can't her what Barry is reporting, but whatever it is, it makes Lucina blanch.

"I know Irons would have signed it, but who in the hell issued a warrant in the first place?!" Lucina snaps. "Damnit, all right, I'll get to the bottom of this. In the meantime, nobody from the department makes a move on this. Period."

Lucina then hangs up and turns to you.

"Bad news, I assume." You sigh.

"Very bad." Lucina shakes her head. "The district attorney's office just issued an arrest warrant for you."

"For what?!" You blink. "I haven't blown anything up this time."

"That's the thing. All the warrant said was 'Suspicion of possession of illegal biological modifications.'" Lucina glowers. "You don't think someone might have picked up on the Invader DNA you're carrying?"

"It's possible, but I haven't told anybody else." You frown.

"Still, the warrant was signed by Irons and I know for sure he's in Umbrella's pocket." Lucina seethes. "I need to get back and get this sorted out..."

"Sounds like the best course of action." You sigh. "Just be careful out there."

"Don't worry, they're definitely not after me." Lucina gives a grin as she quickly wolfs down the last of her bacon and pancakes. "Anyways, I have to head back to Raccoon to get this sorted out. I can guarantee you that the RCPD won't enforce the warrant, but that doesn't rule out the DA from employing 'independent' assistance." Lucina warns. "And unlike my officers, they don't have to worry about jurisdiction. Are you sure you want to stay here?"

Hm, well, the ranch was both secluded and fortified. Set up to be hard to find and even harder to safely assault. Even if it was just you and Springfield here, you could definitely hold your own if it came down to it.

Then again, Auntie Egan had her own private lab facility which was heavily secure, and you could count on whatever resources she had to help you out. But it was a ways away, and trying to contact her for assistance or making your way there would make you vulnerable.

And there was also the BSAA to consider. It looked like they had no love for Umbrella either, and were possibly even investigating them. Plus you had an in through Melissa, who you managed to earn the respect of. Maybe a federal agency could convince Umbrella to back off...

"Don't worry, Mom's prepared this place pretty thoroughly." You grin. "I think I'll be good here."

"All right." Lucina nods. "I know you might want to try and contact and get HK or my mom to come and help, but... be careful. Umbrella's got a lot of reach so any form of communication to your acquaintances can risk them tracing things back to you."

"Assuming they don't already have an idea of where I am." You grunt.

"Yeah, well, that's how it is." Lucina concedes.

At this point, Lucina had already hastily swapped her clothes out for something more proper. Springfield was already carting her luggage back to the car.

"Anyways, stay safe, Lewis." Lucina says as she kisses you on the cheek. "I'll let you know once I get things handled on my end."

"Good luck to you, too." You smile. "I'll be waiting."

And like that, Lucina is back in the car and driving off at maximum speed. Shit, couldn't even have more than a day before something happened, huh?

"So, will you be calling for backup?" Springfield asks. "Alice keeps a secure communication terminal in the emergency bunker. No guarantees that whoever is targeting you can't tap it, but it's certainly better than using your own phone."

"Yeah, I think I'll try to get HK here." You say.

"It'll be quicker to reach the bunker through this way." Springfield walks back to the bedroom and pushes the bed to the side to reveal a concealed hatch, similar to the one in the barn. Guess this was the secondary entrance to the bunker.

You follow Springfield through the tunnel back to the main chamber of the bunker, where the terminal was still sitting.

"Alice made sure to include your biometrics in the system so that you could unlock it yourself." Springfield informs you.

"Ah, okay." You nod as you put your thumb on the reader.

As the terminal activates, you immediately input HK's direct frequency. It would definitely be more secure than the regular phones.

"HK, can you hear me?" You say through the speaker. "HK?"

"Affirmative. I hear you loud and clear, Lewis." HK replies. "There is some confusion going on at the office. Apparently word has spread that there is an arrest warrant for you."

"Yeah, well, it complicated." You grunt. "Look, is there any way you can get to the Ranch? That's my current location right now."

"Of course, Lewis." HK replies.

"And bring everything you got. Expect a fight." You add.

"Affirm-"

Suddenly, you're interrupted by a burst of static that buzzes through your ears, causing you to recoil from the terminal.

"Agh" You grunt.

"Oh dear, it looks like their capabilities are more sophisticated than we thought." Springfield sighs as she unlocks the sealed door. "If they've jammed the transmitter this quickly, it only means they will be closing in on us shortly."

And on the other end of the door, you could see a veritable armory of all sorts of weaponry. Enough to arm a small army, you think. Everything from pistols, rifles, grenades, machine guns, and even some super heavy and exotic looking ordnance. Was Mom stockpiling all this stuff?!

"Activate the security cameras." Springfield points to the terminal and you quickly hit the command.

Immediately, a number of small screens winked on the monitor, showing various areas around the ranch. Looks like Mom was REALLY prepared.

And already, you could see a convoy of SUVs and trucks rolling down the main gravel road towards the ranch, while a quartet of black helicopters were flying low and fast over the forest.

Well, they had the numbers, but you had the home field advantage...

"We should knock out those helicopters before they get here." You grunt. "They could become a real problem."

"Certainly!" Springfield nods as she glances at the armory rack. "Choose whatever you need to fulfill your mission!"

Well, upon first glance, you could see at least one anti-material rifle, as well as a heavy machine that you could lug around with your enhanced strength. The rifle was powerful, bur required precision, while the heavy machine gun lacked the sheer punch but made up for it being able to spit rounds in the air.

However, your gaze also falls upon a massive, shoulder guided launcher of some type.

"Ah, that's the bioplasma launhcer." Springfield explains. "It uses an exotic form of plasma as its primary ammunition. The bioplasma is both highly flammable and corrosive."

AA guns are usually rapid firing for a reason, so they can have more chances to hit. The only reason to take a large caliber gun is if we had explosive flak ammo with computer assisted aim, and the rocket only if it had target seeking warheads.

You pick out the heavy machine, which should be more than enough to knock a few helicopters out of the sky. You pick up the heavy weapon as well as a box or two of bullets. You were going to need a of them.

"Will you be needing an assistance?" Springfield asks as she picks up a bolt action sniper rifle and loads it.

>You could use her help.
>She should stay at the house and keep it locked down.

"Of course." You nod to Springfield. "Let's go hunting."

Without wasting any time, you and Springfield hustle out of the bunker and towards the forest. Already, you could hear the thumping of helicopter rotors as the enemy craft neared. From the trees, they would have trouble seeing you and retaliating. Plus they couldn't land until they reach the house. Springfield follow close behind, rifle in hand.

And the thumping gets louder and louder as the helicopters got closer. You were only going to have one shot at this, so you had to make it good. You knew that there were three kinds of helicopters in the formation. One was a heavy transport, no doubt carrying BOWs, one was an armed gunship, and the last two seemed like regular transports...

The biggest threat once it gets on the ground safely. Better to take it out while it's still in the air to avoid the fight entirely. the gunship meanwhile would still be vulnerable to the HMG, same with any regular troops from the other transports.
>>
>>3415059
>Focus on the gunship.
It'll suppress us the worst, once it's out of the air then we can take care of the regular transports.
Mostly because I'm gonna be damn sure that their BOWs will be designed to handle a little crash.

Certainly makes me wonder if any Hunters we know are on this job to apprehend Lewis, and whether or not they need us dead or alive.

I'm mostly hoping that HUNK isn't on the current team to take us in.
>>
>>3415084
He probably is, along with SOP. The question now becomes, should we try to get them alive as opposed to everyone else in this convoy? Personally I'm on the yes side for various reasons.
>>
>>3415077
>>3415084

I'm guessing they'll more than likely try to beat us to submission rather than try to talk us into going peacefully.
>>
>>3415092
The only surefire way I can think of to get them "alive" is to hit them with a shit ton of electricity to knock them out of commission, because this is HUNK and SOP. They don't stop because of mean old bullets.

Priority number one was to knock down that gunship. The last thing you needed was your opponents having close air support. You finally slide to a stop and point your heavy machine gun upwards, getting ready to strike.

You raise your heavy machine gun and start firing, sending bullets and tracers whizzing into the air. Unfortunately, you're not really able to hit any of the helicopters, but you sure do scare the hell out of them, forcing the entire formation to scatter.

Meanwhile, Springfield has been taking careful aim all this time and finally shoots. You look up to see the gunship's engine belching black smoke and the helicopter formation withdraws, unsure of how to react to this sudden anti-air assault.

Well, that meant the helicopters would be neutralized as a threat, at least for a little while.

"The convoy will reach the house in approximately seven minutes." Springfield warns you. "We should head back and prepare for their arrival."

"Right. Let's go." You nod as you stow away your heavy machine gun.

You have a feeling that today was going to be a very long day...

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread will be on Friday, so don't miss it!

Here's hoping that the ranch won't be completely blown up by the end of this battle.

If Dad's resting place is defiled in any way, I think it's justified for Lewis to go full on Magical Invader.
