/qst/ - Quests

You once were an oneiromancer in a small village, interpreting dreams and bringing serene nights to all who consulted you. But then, they came. The Empire's army took everything from you: your home, your little sister, and even what little solace your magic provided.

Your hatred for them twisted your oneiromancy into something much darker, something you doubt anyone had ever seen before. You have become an ephialtomancer. A twister of dreams. A Nightmare Weaver. And you swear, one day you're going to make those Baalian bastards pay. But for now, you must flee. Where do you go?

>To the north, the fishing town of Abeyk. You can catch a ship there to any number of places, and maybe even another continent to train with your new magic in solitude.
>To the west, your Alma Mater of Rammstein. You can meet with your old master and study why your magic has changed - it isn't unheard of for a mage's affinity to suddenly change, but you've never seen any magic so uncontrollable or freakish.
>To the south, the fortress town Karlov. The wintery city of industry is said to be the lynchpin of the Baal Empire's war effort; if you want to take them down, this is the best place to start.
>To the east, homeward. It will be hard returning without your sister, but the answers as to why your magic changed like this may have to do with your absent father.

>Westward
It will be helpful to study the changes to your body and mind with the help of the wisest--and oldest--dream mage you know, your mentor Caesar Kresy. When you discovered your affinity for dream magic as a boy, your parents were willing to pay almost everything they owed to have him take you as an apprentice, but the old oneiromancer only took 1 gold coin for his payment. Perhaps he's seen or heard of a transformation like yours before.

But first, you must reach him. Riding a horse that ran away from the destruction of your village, you head westwards, avoiding all signs of civilization in fear that an Empire soldier might recognize you. During your travels, you experimented with your new abilities, and found that you were a...
>Dementialist - You could prey on the darkest recesses of your victim's minds and terrorise from within their own skulls. Some of the wildlife you tested it on died from fright, slain by a heart attack.
>Dream Eater - You had always been a lucid dreamer, but your newfound magic allowed you to cross into the dreams of others, pursuing them from within their own mind, devouring their thoughts and growing stronger through it while your mortal body slept.
>Nightmare Master - There is a darkness that lies in all souls of men, and you can help it find its way out. You can summon the evil within people's hearts as malevolent spectres, as cruel as the characters that spawned them. It is said that man's greatest enemy is himself, and this might just prove that.

>Dream Eater
The first time you dreamwalked using you astral self, it was an over pleasurable, if unreal experience.

This was nothing like dreamwalking.

You felt like an animal, wheeling blindly between minds until you could patch on anyone, anything's, dream, always moving, always hunting. Wherever you landed, you felt yourself draining the energy of the dreamer like an incubus of the old tales, growing stronger and exerting more control over their thoughts until you couldn't bear it any longer and pushed off again. You woke up the next morning exhausted and covered and sweat, yet strangely refreshed.

>Basic Cantrip: Devour Thought unlocked. Basic Spell: Dream Prowler unlocked. Condition: Dream Eater unlocked.

In all the confusion and your grief since the attack on your village, you neglected to even think about your familiar. All mages have their own familiar, a natural or magical creature attuned to them to help them focus their magic. Usually, the more powerful the mage, the more powerful the familiar: your old familiar was a dark feathered mousing owl, while the old man's was a pygmy sphinx. Your owl flew off during the attack however, which likely meant that it had been unbound from your service and wouldn't be returning. When you first found a familiar, it just came to you from the wilderness around you. Maybe it shall do so again? You meditate, and reach for the same twisted magic as before...

>A night lion approaches you, its powerful muscles stretching under its jet black skin. You can feel the raw power emanating from it, fierce and barely tamed.
>An albino cobra slithers up your arm and rests its head on your shoulder. It pretends to sleep, but you can tell its simply judging as to how you will react: if you are weak, it will dominate you through fear, but perhaps that manipulative nature can be utilized.
>A dire bat screeches through the forest despite it being daytime, lost and confused and landing in your camp. You feel a strange kinship with it: this creature is as lost and out of place as you are, and wants to go back to a home it will likely never find again.

Keep in mind, it's dire in comparison to a bat, and bats are tiny as fuck. It's probably around the size of an English Bulldog, not horse-tier. Still a solid choice, definitely.

>Albino cobra
You stay very calm: to show fear in the face of a cobra is deadly, especially for the rare albino, for it is said they will drain the soul out of those they bite.

Seemingly impressed by your fearlessness, it coils itself fully around your arm, actually resting this time. You let out a sigh: you hadn't even realized you were holding your breath. You feel a connection beginning to develop with the snake: if you haven't fully bonded with it, you at least have begun the process.

With the morning's excitement over, you begin your journey again, your only companions being the horse, the snake on your shoulder, and the forest around you. You can see the trees thinning, which means you're approaching Rammstein. You ride for about 2 hours until you reach the end of the woods. In the distance you can see the walls of Rammstein, surrounded all around by plains. You see a short line extending outside the city's gates as well: some kind of checkpoint perhaps? You have no idea what could have happened to cause the peaceful city of mages to need one.

How will you approach?
>Go through the checkpoint normally and state your intention to visit your master: you lived here for a decade, the townspeople should still recognize despite being gone for 6 years.
>Go through the checkpoint, but say you're a simple traveller looking for a place to rest. Transients aren't uncommon in Rammstein, and sharing your identity might not be safe after what happened in your village.

You flip up your hood as you approach the gate, and although you try to coerce Rex into a pouch, the reptile refuses, remaining coiled around your shoulder. Relenting, you approach the gate, hoping no one will recognize you.

Finally, your turn approaches at the gate. The guard stops your horse and makes you dismount. "State your name and purpose in this city."
Before you can speak however, Rex moves, wrapping his tail around your neck and through some strange magic preventing you from speaking. Both of you are shocked when the snake starts speaking in a deep, predatory voice. "We have come from landsss far away from here. It is my people'sss tradition to have our familiarsss ssspeak for us. Pleassse, all we seek isss a place to ressst and buy new sssuppliesss...we were ambushed in the foressst by brigandsss and lost our bags." You quickly adapt and simply nod your head in response; thankfully, since you had no chance to take anything from the village before your house burned down, you really don't have any luggage.

The guard lets you past, clearly intimidated by the strange mage in front of him. "W-welcome to R-rammstein sir." He takes a moment to regain his confidence. "Please, stay out of trouble and be indoors by nightfall." The guard leans in close, making sure neither of his compatriots checking other travelers can hear him. "There have been some murders recently - killed without a single trace of a murder weapon, so we know it's a mage. 'Course, that doesn't really narrow things down in this city." He steps back again and waves to another guard operating the portcullis. "Stay safe sir!" he calls out as you depart, and you hear him mutter something under his breath about foreigners and mages.

You are now in the town square. It's almost exactly as you remember: children playing and experimenting with their fledgling magic, apprentices running errands for their mentors, and old mages sitting in chairs around the fountain as they laugh and talk about the olden days and what their apprentices are up to. Still, you can tell something is wrong: people are acting stiff, and the moment they spot you their eyes narrow in suspicion. This is not how Rammstein usually is.

Where do you go?
>Head straight to your mentor's home, in the inner city. He needs to hear about what happened to you.
>Hang out at the bar for a few hours and listen in - the best to find rumors is on the lips of drunken men after all.
>Go to an inn and purchase new clothes and supplies. You'll need them if you're going to be traveling.
>Go to the stables and see if you can get your horse either taken care or sell it for a better one. It might not do well to be caught with a stolen horse, even if the owner might be dead.
>Slip into a side alley and find out what the hell happened at the gates with Rex.

You dip into one of the many side alleys leading away from town hall, sidestepping someone dumping the leftover broth from their dinner out of a second story window. A portal opens on the street, leading to the underground dumping area of Rammstein, part of the city's enchantment. Some things never change here, you suppose.

Once you're satisfied that no one is around, you reach into your bag to grab Rex, but he coils around your arm, anticipating your movement. You raise the snake to eye level, demanding, "What the hell happened at the gate?!" you demand. "How the hell can a familiar talk? Even the most intelligent ones should only be barely sapient!" The cobra moves up your arm, slithering until it wraps around your neck again, and again you feel the sensation of a blockage in your vocal cords.
"The ssserpent'sss hood hides many secrets, and it would be...foolish to reveal them of my own accord. Know thisss, weaver: I mean thee no harm, and I am yoursss to command, but do not presume to think yourself my only master." With that said, the snake goes back into your bag and refuses to come out no matter how much you coerce him.

Giving up, you return to the town square. It's less populated now, as it's dinnertime for most of the children. Lua Prime is beginning to rise over the castle walls. What will you do now?

>To Your Master's Home
You move quickly through the streets, for the supposed curfew is fast approaching and you're not keen to find out if there rumors of murders are true after all.

It does not take long to reach your master's home: Krezy Tower, while still in the middle of town like all the other mage's homes, is closer to the wall then most others. You stand on the doorstep for a short bit, deciding whether or not to knock, and just when you work up the courage to, the door opens. "Honestly, I was wondering if you were going to open the door at all." says your master with a smirk, stepping aside to welcome you home.

You bow as you enter and present your hand, with index finger outstretched. Caeser responds to your greeting by lightly pricking your hand with his enormous canine, sucking only a single drop of blood: a traditional vampire greeting. Your master has been one of the Altered for as long as anyone can remember, though you know that at one point he had been human.

If it was anyone else, he might have been discriminated against for his status, but one doesn't become a oneiromancer magus without picking up a few friends in high places. The fact that he had helped craft the enchantment that protected and served the people of Rammstein for so many years didn't hurt either.

You can tell he is not well however, judging by the paleness in skin and the shrinking of his canines. It seems these murders are really bothering him.

What will you say?
>"Master, you won't believe what I've been through the past two weeks..."

Last post of the night
"Caesar, are you alright? You don't look so good." You guide your master to a seat, placing your bag upon the wall, much to the displeasure of Rex inside. The old vampire attempts to wave off your concerns, but a fit of spasms causes his eyes to roll back. Finally, after much prodding, he admits what's going on. "The enchantment...that protects Rammstein was tied to the life forces of its creators. As those who cast the original one died, we had it passed on to other mages, all volunteers of course. Recently however...someone's been targeting those that help upkeep the enchantment. I volunteered...to take the burden for myself. Use...as bait. I can take care of myself, though I did seem to...underestimate the toll on my body. It's quite a bother really."

>"How could you be so reckless! Not even you can handle a spell of that magnitude by yourself!"
>"How can I help? Why can't anyone else help you provide for the enchantment, surely the guard can protect you!"
>"Why did you tie the enchantment to your life forces at all? Couldn't you find some other power source?"

Something doesn't add up to you. "What I don't understand is why you tied the enchantment to your life forces at all? Couldn't you find some other power source? A leyline perhaps?"
Caeser frowns. "The world...no, I suppose evenmagic itself has changed since those times. It was...even more difficult to cast magic even along one's affinity back then; it was a much more give and take affair. The lives of a few powerful magicians in exchange for the protection and maintenance of an entire city? it seemed like such a good deal at a time.” He coughs again, this time hacking up a few drops of black blood. He stands and turns to leave. “I must rest child. We can discuss whatever you came to tell me in the morning. Feel free to stay in your old room for tonight - I've kept it clean for you.” With that, he ascends further into the tower.

With Lua Prime and Duo both high in the sky, you decide to retire for the night as well. You expect the same confusing tumble from dream to dream again, but you're surprised by when you appear to be stable in the mists. Just then, a gargantuan shape rises from the darkness beneath you: a giant white snake wraps its tail around you and brings you to its eye level. “Massster,” says Rex in the same deep, reptilian voice as before. “We mussst hurry. I cannot sssussstain this form for very long, but I can help you in your dream-ssstalking at least once per night. I can take you to the dream of anyone you know, or alert you to dangers in the dream world if I've found any. Alternatively, I can help you find...acceptable prey to devour the thoughts of, giving you more power for the next day. Command me, and I will obey.”

What will you do for the first part of the night?

You shake your head. "This might be my first time having any real control of the dream, but I have to learn how to do whatever it is you're doing by myself, and the best way is to toss myself in and see what works. Rex's eyes narrow, but he obeys, once again taking his familiar perch aboard you arm. You feel the dizziness set in as you're dragged once again upon the winds of thought.

The first dream you find yourself in is, previously enough, a child's dream. A little girl is playing tea party with a group of anthromorphic animals. She beckons you forward, and you feel your projection changing to match the dream, becoming a man with a snake's head, your legs replaced with a tail. She pours out a "cuppa tea" for you as you contemplate what to do?

>In the beginning, every night you have the opportunity to travel between three dreams, but your new condition is both blessing or curse, as you need to consume terror during these dream sequences or wake the next morning drained. In each dream you can choose to make it a scary dream, a nightmare, or a death dream:
>Scary dreams are terrifying for a little bit but have a happy ending and restore 1/3 of your energy.
>Nightmares feel more real and often don't have a satisfying ending but restore 2/3 of your energy.
>Death dreams are even more intense than nightmares and can kill the faint of heart or the weakened but fully restore your energy.
>Alternatively, you can choose to skip a dream and lose 1/3 of your energy - if you begin the day with negative energy, you will become sick and desperate for terror, and skipping all 3 dreams will lead to dire consequences, most worst than death.
>Any energy overcharge on the hand flows into your daytime self, supercharging your magic and physique for as long as you can sustain it.

How will you change this dream?

Death dream's a bit harsh for a kid. We're better than the Empire.
>>
>>3419111

I'm just curious QM, if we had picked a different familiar, would we have had a different form in this dream? What with the snake head and all.
>>
>>3419160
Yeah, it would have matched whatever you picked.
>>
>>3419173
Does that mean that the people who's dreams we visit may recognize us in real life if they see our familiar?
>>
>>3419177
For now, it's unlikely they'll make the connection, but having multiple people almost die of fear and with the culprit nightmare always having some kind of snake motif...
>>
>>3419183

Gotcha, either keep the dreams reasonably scary, or make sure that their are no survivors.
>>
>>3419111
>Give her a scary dream.

No reason to go all out on a kid, and a little bit of fear builds character.
>>
>>3419111
>Give her a nightmare (+2 Terror)
It's just a nightmare, she'll be fine. We should look into developing a special brand of sleep paralysis, that would be fun.
>>
>>3419111
>Give her a scary dream (+1 Terror)
I would feel bad giving nightmares to a litlle girl, but if there's a tie count me as a nightmare.

Also OP,will we ever be able to recover and use our dream powers too ? It'd be cool if we could harvest the energy of happy dreams. Not only we wouldn't need to scare the little girls, but "scary dreams" wouldn't be needed since we wouldn't have to worry about hurting innocents.
>>
>>3419948
monsters inc when?
>>
>>3419954
Now that I think about it,that >>3419720 anon suggested to get sleep paralysis,so if we get it we would be able to do something similar.
>>
>Scary dreams are terrifying for a little bit but have a happy ending and restore 1/3 of your energy.

I notice gitp has a healthier community, but it does seem less free than qst. That I'll admit.

Never, if I have anything to say about it.

You sink your metaphorical hands into the workings of this girl's dream, and the knowledge of what knobs to twist and how things will change manifests itself to you. Inside the dream, your snake-human avatar changes, growing larger and larger, enough to tower over the girl and all of her compatriots. Before any can react, you grab the girl and begin slithering your way up a dark tower that rather conveniently appeared.

Dreams are weird.

From the top of the tower, you can see the little girl's companions congregating at the bottom, shouting at you to let go of "Sophie," as she is apparently called. You do just that, though you doubt that they meant "drop her from 30 feet in the air." It's not like it matters, since they will undoubtedly catch her since dreams don't follow the laws of physics, but Sophie's fear of being kidnapped and then dropped from a large height invigorates your mind and causes your still huge form to shiver from the rush.

Even as the tower shatters and your avatar falls into oblivion, you exit the dream and find yourself in the clutches of the streams of thought covering the entire city. It does not take long for you to reach another dream. You are in the sea this time, being what appears to be a strange sea serpent. Above the water, you can sense a large ship crashing through the stormy waves, creaking and turning as it braves the tempest. You have yet to see the owner of this dream, but you can sense he is nearby.

How will you change this dream?
