Last time in Beyond the Pale, a short thread marked by the beginning of the reign of Chief Idalach. So far, it has been a tumultuous era, marked by intrigue and an unprecedented amount of authority taken on by the chief. An uncomfortable amount, some might say.

---

At the end of last thread, the vote seemed split, so going to repost the year while I respond to the missing projects.

E. Ban slavery

A major change in the laws has been proposed: banning slavery. While it is well known that Esaudh supports the abolishment of slavery, many who live within Taelia proper as well as a few large farmers do not wish to see the law passed, stating that it will harm their livelihood and thus the entire chiefdom. The priests, however, fervently argue for the freedom of the slaves. As it is, the group make up 7.5% of your population, numbering 1,200 in total. All of them are Natoyan, either by birth or due to their parentage. This is another reason some oppose freeing them; after all, why free these people and let them return home, weakening Taelia and strengthening Natoya? This is why some argue for a more nuanced solution; no child shall be born into slavery, but those who are already a slave will remain one.

Vote carefully. If the two freedom options have over 50% of the vote share, I'll do a runoff:

A. Free the slaves!
B. No child born into slavery, but no new freedom, either
C. Keep them in chains
D. Other

Little is held within the caves, but you do map the extensive cave system fully.

(I'll allow you to write that up, within reason, of course.)

(Dubs bonus, 5 + 50 + 0 = 55)

Your development of the ritual has gone well so far, however, you have yet to "direct" the fear effect. That is to say, anyone who hears the ritual will be affected by it. The drums do become quite well known as your symbol, though.

Assets:
- Experienced wood carvers (Eastern Taelia)

Lands:
- Timber + wood carving shops (Eastern Taelia)
- Housing (Edge of Taelia proper)

Deals:
- Shipbuilding and wooden goods agreement with Gunardhson Clan
- The most skilled and intimidating members will guard Nymph banks

Rituals:
- Lesser Strengthening Ritual
- Lesser Fear Ritual

(Dubs bonus, 5 + 50 + 0 = 55; You can sort out the assets yourself, having seen the others, I think.)

Your search turns up a handful of items...

(Same as far as converting your own assets to my format goes.)

Compared to the magic of the cloak, it is hard to say how your new ritual differs. However, the averse effect is gone entirely. The only downside is that the invisibility effect is not as strong, and lasts only for a short period of time.

Now now let us be reasonable the slaves may earn their freedom once they have paid themselves off. Each slave will be released once they reach their 30th name day so they might enjoy the rest of their days free, they may however stay and instead become apart of the paid labour force (not my fault the swamp folk don't live long or they might have been indoctrinated by then or work to their limits), each time they fight in a battle they may remove 5 years from their time in service or other activities

By a thin margin, slavery is abolished in the Assembly. While Chief Idalach chose no side in the vote, it is apparent that both the Erodhs and the Allos in the legislature voted against the measure, and used underhanded measures to ensure others did the same. As such, they have drawn some criticism from the priests and the commonfolk, which they are having a hard time defending themselves from. In comparison, the chief's lack of involvement seems almost saintly.

Mining has made increases in the past few years, as new methods from the Lavingi are learned. Along with being able to produce larger and more extensive mines due to improved props and other innovations, improved techniques such as hydraulic mining gradually begin to replace traditional methods, like fire-setting.

In other news, the Inquisition has been handed a victory in the form of them taking over the city guard. The Tulides have given up the ghost, and their members and assets split up among other families and businesses they were closely associated with.

All is silent on the mountain, though Esaudh is apparently still present there, as the art is taken away. Some take it as a sign that he is displeased with you, though others who recognize that the abolishment of slavery would not upset him, believe there are other matters on his mind.

A - Agriculture, what will you do? While the diversity in your crops is somewhat lacking, that is not due to a failure on your part. Indeed, lesser crops such as grapes polish off a diet not heavily lacking in anything, though perhaps reliant on seafood and various forms of squash. However, there is potential for new foods to be introduced, such as the cabbage found on Arel's Grave by the Jagats.

The cabbage, called Erapch's cabbage after its discoverer, has become quite popular. Its raw taste is not peppery, but somewhere close to it, tangy, if one had to use such a word. When cooked, it is drier, with its popularity owing to the various ways it can be prepared as well, including pickling.
