So let's see... news.

Nope, nothing here. Moving along!

Archive here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Strike%20Witches%202016
A note about the archive: it's also got the abortive attempt of the first SW2016 run in there- you can ignore that, as it has no real relevance to this particular quest. I mean, read it if you want, but understand I wasn't in a good place while writing it, and I won't be lifting much from it.

I think that's about it!

==============================================================================================================

Your visit to the flight surgeon was short and to the point- even with a witch on hand, they didn’t find anything. You’d expected as much, but kept your mouth shut the entire time, as you’d been taught. No shock they couldn’t detect a single thing wrong- they’ve never figured out your father, either, and you can’t imagine they’d figure out anything here that the intervening twenty-odd years hasn’t already failed to reveal.

You wish you could at least feign surprise when the doc and the witch both left- and were replaced a minute later by your mother, her familiar already out. She looked you up and down with an unreadable expression- she can be impossible to judge, if it suits her. She shook her head a minute later and sat down in the chair by the door, leaning back and crossing her legs.

“What am I goan do with you, boy?” She asked, rhetorically, after another quiet minute. “I should be knowin ya be doin dis, but ya gotta tink of your poor maman.”

You blink, reaching down to shrug back into your flight suit- you’d had to strip it down to your waist, and it’s too cold in here to be sitting in just an undershirt. You zip it back up and velcro the cuffs closed, vaguely wondering if Kyou is going through the same mess across the hall.

“And dere ya go, pretending ya maman ain’t bout ta have her a heart attack over her boy. How you tink it looks when dey tell me dere’s been a crash where you were, an you in de hospital?”

“Sorry Maman.” You say- there’s nothing you can really say but sorry, and it’s not worth the effort to point out you really haven’t had a chance to call her.

She sighs. “Boy, don’t nobody know if you inherit ya daddy’s talent, or if you be something else different, oui. An if I’da been tinkin, I woulda warned you about flying with dat Kyou, but I wasn’t an here we are.”

[] It’s not Kyou’s fault, maman.

Also in a extremely rare bout of creativity I was inspired by the OP image. While there's still more I'd like to do with it, I hit a block and knowing me it will likely remain on my hard drive untouched till the drive dies, so here it is.

[x] It’s fine Maman. We’re both fine.

“It’s fine, Maman. We’re both fine.”

“Hmm, an you’ve talk to her, oui? you know you both fine?” She asks.

“We were fine when we were sent here.” You respond.

“An when ya big sisters snuffed out your papa, it took time for it to set in.” She fires back.

“But he was much worse than we were.” You point out. “Couldn’t hardly walk. We were both fine. Probably just adrenaline and the MIU.”

“Oh, an you an expert now, boy?” She asks. “Ya be flying with a girl who probably de mos powerful natural born witch in history, an wid her being de way she is?” She shakes her head. “You two goan burn like de sun, ya prolly eclipse ya papa an dat Samantha, but ya make me worry. An de MIU don’t explain her being tired too.”

“Adrenaline does.” You say. “And she was powering a lot of systems.”

“Huh. Boy, ya don’t be arguing wid ya maman.” She responds- a more or less admission that she doesn’t really have a counterargument handy. Of course, she’s probably fully aware of what’s going on. Probably more so than you do, in fact- which means that her not having a counterpoint means that odds are, it was exactly what you said it was. That the reaction has been as severe as it has been isn’t a shock, though. Indeed, you’ve expected this kind of thing, just because it’s not like your father’s wartime medical issues are closely guarded secrets- and Tabitha resurrecting him is a thing of legend in the witch academies.

You sit quietly while she thinks, then sighs. “You two goan be a ting of legend yaselves, if ya work together. But dat be true, I tink, of any of dem.” She says, after a minute.

[x] So what happened out there with the Lancer, Maman?

“So what happened out there with the Lancer, Maman?” You ask, wanting to get off the subject- she tends to get a bit emotional when it comes to you and flying. Again, for good enough reasons, at least to her, but it’s still never comfortable.

She blinks- and then laughs. “Boy, dat just happen an hour or two ago. Dey don’t even have investigators on site yet, jus an army guard. Be weeks mebby befoah dey have a fixed reason why it go down.”

“We saw smoke.” You say, half to yourself.

She nods. “Oui, most of de pilots reported dat. De crew made it out, but dey in rough shape. No way to ask dem right now either. But if dey didn’t have your jet dere, dey might not make it, the air force already saying, so be happy bout dat.”

You nod- you’d expected that was why the AWACS directed you there and ordered a datalink- the wyvern is equipped with the kind of real-time links usually reserved for the bigger C3I aircraft or combat information centers. Coupled with the incredibly powerful sensor suite, it’s almost as good as being able to have eyes on the ground- your laser detection and rangefinding alone can pick out ground clutter the size of a golfball in an area the size of a football field. Coupled with the AI, you’re able to sweep a massive area very quickly. It’s one of the more contentious abilities of the wyvern- sensor power like that isn’t cheap, and, according to a few, to include influential pilots from the war and men like Pierre Spey, it’s out of place and makes the wyvern far too expensive to use.

“So how long do I stay here?” You ask.

She shakes her head. “Ya be cleared already. De docs tell me de same thing you did out in de hall. Dey say it’s expected an normal- just adrenaline climbdown an de price of doing business wid the computer. You goan go see dat Kyou? She over in de udda room dere.”

“”She’s my crew for now.” You respond- you’d be doing this for anyone else in the backseat of the wyvern, and Maman would be quick to pounce on anything but the most noncomittal of answers, regardless of what you’re thinking. “I have to.”

Your Maman nods, seemingly happy enough with that answer. She stands up, stretching some, before yawning and shaking her head around. “I tink I may be stayin in de area some.” She says, after a minute. “de local coven, dey say dey be happy to put me up for de time bein, an it’s not everyday ya get de chance to talk wid an imperial princess.” She grins and looks at you. “An it’s not everyday ya can go ask dat Samantha for de chili.”

[x] I made that for Aunt Samantha, maman. I can make more for you later.

“I made that for aunt Samantha, maman.” You say, hopping off the exam table to open the door for her. “I can make more for you later.”

“You bein protective of her, now?” Your mother asks with a grin. “Well, she a bit older, oui, but I’m not gonna tell ya what you can and can’t do. Jus remember, she a married woman, you be careful messin round wid dem.”

“It’s not like that, maman.” You respond.

“Oh, I be sure it isn’t.” She says, still grinning. “I’m sure you got no desire for de cute little witch dat into all de fast jets like you and de one you make de chili foah just foah her askin. I’m sure. Boy, lie to anyone else, don’t try to lie to your maman.”

“It’s not a lie, Maman.” You say. “But if I don’t look after her, who will?”

Your mother laughs. “She a grown woman, boy.” is all she says. “I’ll be aroun.” and with that, she walks off, disappearing around a corner. You watch her go- you’re sure she’s not really gone, of course, but she’s not got anything more to say, clearly.

You knock on the door to the exam room Kyou went into- and she calls for you to enter. She nods when you bow- you have to remind yourself she’s an imperial princess, afterall, and you are supposed to show proper respect. “Lieutenant.” She says. “Are you well?”

You nod. “Clean bill of health, highness.”

She smiles. “Good. I have been told the same thing. And please, you may call me Kyou. I would prefer it, in fact. Am I to understand that we’re released from here?”

You nod again.

“Excellent. If I may, are we allowed to change? This flight suit is fine for operating the jet, but it isn’t comfortable for long terms.” She picks a bit at the material covering her arm- there’s not much give to it, and it snaps back to skin-tight as soon as she lets it go. “And I would very much like it if we had a chance to talk, some. Before dinner.” She says, pausing. “Preferably in private.”

[x] Of course.

“Of course.” You say, twisting out of the way as she stands and glides through the door, turning and waiting for you just outside.

“I think,” She says, after a moment of walking, “That if we are to fly together, you and I must understand each other better. I was given poor information, and I apologize if I seemed demanding or too much to fly with. I have always favored aggression in combat because both it is expected of me and because I am aware of what I can do. I understand if this not something you are comfortable with, but you must understand I am much stronger than they are able to tell.”

You nod- she did come off as far to aggressive for you- but at the same time, her shield did hold up perfectly well against abuse that could have cracked any other witch’s defense open without any trouble, and she was competent with your AAMs. Still, her wild aggression isn’t exactly something that sits well with you.

“I am not asking you to finalize a selection so early.” She continues. “Nor would I accept it if you were to do so. But if you do decide we would be a good team, we will need to understand each other much better than we seem to. Do you agree?”

“Absolutely.” You respond, nodding. “But we’d have plenty of time during the workup cycle to do so anyway.”

“I am aware.” She says. “However, I believe we will also need to spend a great deal of time together, and I will plan to move in with you, should we be confirmed as a crew.”

You blink. “Is that even allowed?” You ask. She laughs.

“If you mean because of military regulation, I believe it is expected of a wyvern crew. If you mean because of my position...” She pauses. “It was understood that I would become very closely linked with my pilot, when I entered the program.”

“So they know that-”

She nods. “Yes. Let us not worry about that though, for now.” She says. “My primary concern is that we appear to have differing ideas on how we must engage the enemy. Again, I understand that you are the commander of the aircraft, and I thank you for listening to me and allowing me to suggest courses of action. We appear to be an effective team, but I feel as if we are both operating with badly incomplete pictures of the other currently.” She pauses, apparently considering how much to give away to you. “And I will tell you now, I am not able to show you the extent of my ability in these exercises. I am capable of much more than they can let us show in these narrow trials.”

She pauses as you turn down the hallway to the locker rooms. “I think it would be best to leave it there.” She says, after another second. “I enjoyed our flight, Lieutenant.” She says, after a minute. “and it was a pity it was cut short.”

Hold your horses lady. Don't be so blatantly thirsty. Frank bunked with Merlin, it's not unusual. I took issue with her way of putting it, as if it was her decision alone. Intended or not, it came off as very... regal, in a bad way.

So is anyone else... not so concerned about Kyou?

Yes she's got something going on that we don't know about but so did Danielle. Maybe not to the same extent but as much as Ghost is giving us a waifu up front he's not going to make it easy on us. Dealing with Merlin was a big part of the last quest.

I mean there's a whole selection process that is put together by the navy to make sure pairs are compatible. They wouldn't put her on the list if they thought she was going to go nutso on anyone. That's not what they want at all. Clearly we don't know everything about her, she said as much, but we won't know everything about our other partners either.

Personally I'm just seeing a motivated, highly driven person who's used to doing and getting things there way reaching out to someone who might become their first and only real partner in life. Ghost has said as much repeatedly, in story, in thread and in the images that it's all but certain Wyvern crews hook up. For someone like her, nerves are something you push through, not worry about so I'm not seeing any reason to flip out. At least not yet.

I kinda like Kyou a lot honestly. There is something with her that I feel would strike some balance with mc. She is alright with pushing what she wants but she also listens when told of opposite.

[x] It happens, and we made a pretty good showing anyway.

“It happens.” You respond- though you can’t imagine anyone wants it to happen too often- B-1Ws are too expensive to be replacing every time you have to fly. “We made a pretty good showing anyway, I think.”

She nods, agreeing. “I believe so too.” she says, with the faint flicker of a smile. “The pity is we weren’t able to show them more.” And with that she turns into the female locker room, the door swinging shut behind her.

She’s waiting for you by the time you shower and change, sitting on the wooden bench in the hall in her IJN uniform again. She stands when you exit the locker room, falling into step next to you.

You head back to the briefing room, where the marine Colonel is waiting- alone, this time, the public relations people absent. “Take a seat, and we’ll get this done.” He says, gesturing at the front row of chairs.

He nods again when both of you are in the chairs, crossing the room to close the door and hit the light switch. “Well, LT, it seems your cursed.” He says. “That’s two for two where things weren’t quite the way we planned them out. Wasn’t our fault this time though, so at least there’s some small favors.”

He pauses, bringing up the map of the training complex. “Final tally is six king raptors down in about two minutes of fight. You cleared the airspace you were ordered to clear, though we didn’t get to see if you could hold it open. Still, the commander on the ground was impressed, and wanted to relay there’d be a small token of appreciation headed your way. Don’t get a big head over it, that’s pretty common with crews in the pipeline.”

“If I may, sir, what happened with the air force plane that went down?” Kyou asks- not having had the conversation with your maman, she wouldn’t know.

“No idea.” The colonel responds. “Multiple pilots reported the smoke, though. The pilot and AC aren’t in any condition to be answering crash investigator’s questions right now, and there’s a smoking crater in the desert where their bird went in, so there’s no telling.”

Kyou nods. “The crew survived?”

“The crew made it out.” The colonel says- not quite a confirmation, but not an outright denial, either. “They’ll probably all make it, the pilot’s in the worst shape, but he’s stable last I heard. That’s all we know right now.” He pauses. “Lieutenant, Admiral Wells wanted you to report to her as soon as you were done here. Tai-I, the skipper of the Kaga and the ship’s matron requested your presence as soon as it was convenient for you, with regards from your father. They’re currently up in the admin offices.”

He looks at his watch. “And I need to be up there soon. Do either of you have questions?”

Kyou stays silent, looking over at you.

[x] No, sir.

“No, sir.” You say.

“Good. Lieutenant, the admiral’s out on the pad. Tai-I, I’ll show you up to admin.”

Kyou nods. “That would be acceptable, sir.” She says, standing up as the colonel hits the lights again. “Lieutenant, I will attempt to join you on the tarmac later.”

You nod, though you let her and the colonel head out first, leaving the door open and lights on behind you. Kyou and the colonel turn down the hallway the witch shooting you one last look as they turn right out of the doors, while you head out of the access doors to the flight line, crossing the pavement quickly.

Merlin’s working in the jet, alone for now- though there’s enough support equipment already there to indicate the crew’s been there already, though it is getting close to lunch time, which would explain why they’re not there now. You frown at them leaving her here though- she’ll go all day without eating, given the chance.

“Morgan!” She calls down as you approach. “W-wait down there, I’ll come down.” You nod, watching as she climbs out of the cockpit and jumps down- with her familiar out, she cushions her landing impressively well, smiling up as you cross the last couple feet to her. “You g-got my message?” She asks- you nod.

“G-good. We have t-to talk.” She looks past you. “K-kyou’s not with you?”

[x] She’s up in the admin office.

“She’s up in the admin office.” You say, looking up at the Wyvern. She- you’re already thinking of your plane as female- is already hooked to ground power, with the computer cart already pulled up and sitting off her nose, though that’s not plugged in yet.

Merlin nods. “G-good. You need t-to be the one to talk to her if y-you fly with her again.”

“What happened?” You ask, and your aunt frowns.

“I-I’m not sure. Not yet.” She says, after a moment. “But I’ve b-been reviewing logs a-and I think she’s hiding something.”

She pauses. “O-or a few things.”

You stay silent for a minute, and Merlin takes that as an indication of hesitation. “N-nothing bad, but...” She pauses. “W-well, I’ve been reviewing logs, a-and you h-have some unusual flight recorded. A-and your airspeed records are s-strange as well.”

“How strange?” You ask.

It’s Merlin's turn to hesitate. “N-natalya.” She says after a moment.

The name says it all- Natalya, one of your three adopted older sisters, is kind of a hot-button topic among witches in the states. Even your mother doesn’t fully seem to know what to make of the girl, if even just because of her admitted origins. She’s a war-era soviet ‘superwitch’- genetically engineered using now-banned technology as a living weapon. She’s always just accepted it as part of her past, something she can’t change and doesn’t worry about- she long ago took your father’s last name, same as Stasya and Lilya, and is fiercely loyal to her family. For the most part, it’s kept people quiet about her- and her association with the black side of the military silences the rest of them, at least in public.

But what she’s capable of- well. Witches can bend the laws of physics usually, sometimes quite noticeably. In cases like Tabitha and Anastasia, you can see it, feel it- they can suck all the heat out of the air around them- Anastasia can drop a comfortable room to sub-zero temperatures in minutes. But Natalya? Natalya can break the laws of physics- impossible to match, almost, for any other witch.

“N-now, I’m n-not saying anything about h-her past.” Merlin says. “O-or any of that. But w-we’re not getting the whole story there.”

[x] So what should we do?

“So what should we do?” You ask.

Merlin shakes her head. “R-right now? There’s n-not much we can do. B-but there’s nothing we need t-to do, u-unless you’re thinking y-you plan to m-make her the lucky w-witch. If y-you are, then I’m g-going to want to talk t-to the board a-about some planned w-work we were doing with our t-test jets in strengthening their skeletons a-and skin against unusual stresses.”

You nod. “But for now?”

“For now?” Merlin repeats, then shakes her head again. “W-we don’t need to do a-anything. They w-won’t allow a reflight, t-they’re happy enough with your showing as is. Tomorrow y-you’ll do your flight w-with Lotus, and t-then the reflight w-with Danielle.”

“Did you talk to her?” You ask.

Merlin smiles and nods. “S-she’s a nice girl. I-if she doesn’t end up backseating f-for you, I’m planning to a-ask her to come work f-for me.”

“How would that work if you activate your commission?” You ask, frowning. “You can’t be testing and running research and development from a carrier while acting as crew chief on my jet, right?”

She laughs. “W-what do you think I was doing d-during the war?” She asks. “M-most of my best work h-has happened when I’m working closely w-with front line units. A-and with the way wyvern units work I-I’d have plenty of chances t-to do what I’m p-planning.”

There’s something she’s not telling you- you can tell her nervous tics, shifting her bare feet on the concrete, running her hand back through her hair, fidgeting with one of the simple stud earrings in her right ear. You can get that out of her later, you decide, if for no other reason than one issue at a time seems to be plenty, and Kyou appears to be far more pressing overall- even if she isn’t telling you something, you do still trust your ‘aunt’.

You nod. “So Lotus is flying tomorrow?” You ask, and she nods.

“Y-yes. I’m n-not supposed to tell you anything about the flight t-though.” She looks guilty at that- like she wants to, but can’t. “I-it won’t be t-the same as the others t-though. Different focus.”

[x] Well, if you’re not supposed to say anything, don’t. How’s my jet?

You nod. “Well, if you’re not supposed to say anything, don’t.” You say, looking back up at the Wyvern. “How’s my jet?”

“O-oh!” Merlin exclaims. “H-here, let me show you. Up h-here.” She starts up the air stairs, looking back once to make sure you’re following, then stepping aside so you can climb back in the cockpit. She climbs up after you, perching herself on the canopy rail and putting her feet on your leg.

“O-ok, b-bring up the MFD.” She says, letting you power up the multifunction display situated front and center on the console in front of you. You do, and she leans down into the cockpit to use the touchscreen display, rapidly bringing up the self-diagnostic features. “S-see? there, t-that part of the display indicates t-the AI’s dataset.”

You can read the display, albeit only barely. “So if I’m seeing this right-”

“T-the AI is as developed a-as it should be t-two weeks into the workup c-cycle.” Merlin provides, straightening back up with a pleased smile. “Y-you’re feeding it all the d-data it could ask for, a-and then some. I-I’m g-going to have to work t-to keep it able to keep u-up with you.” She says.

She sounds incredibly pleased about that- like it’s going to be a challenge. “The MIU is s-supposed to be able to keep up with anything. I-I think it’s struggling to adapt b-because of Kyou, b-but w-with her linked in i-it’s going to need improvements t-to work a-at it’s full potential.” She smiles. “I-I may have to go back to t-the plant if that’s t-the case.”
“How much of that was the last flight though?” You think.

“P-probably more than half.” She responds. “I-I know what you’re thinking, b-but it shouldn’t be t-that bad if she’s n-not selected. I-it also means t-that you’re going t-to be feeling it much m-more acutely than m-most pilots, b-because it’s going to reach t-true awareness s-soon. M-maybe after the next flight. P-probably as soon as you g-get your operator.”

You nod. “So that’s good?”

“T-that’s great!” She exclaims. “I-I would kill t-to be able to link w-with it, this k-kind of growth is amazing.” She smiles. “I-I’ll have to have updated plugs p-put in for sure, now. A-and maybe have t-the new GSI c-cart brought in. This could b-be the opportunity I-I’ve been waiting for.”

Missed most of the last two weeks, but I'm caught up now. I'm the anon who presented the 2500 year bloodline of Japan in the last thread, so it's a shame I missed her flights.
Kyou is fucking excellent, but gotta say, I am not fond of the press we're gonna get. I don't need every newspaper in the world wiping my hypothetical ass 24/7, and I certainly don't want the japanese monarchy breathing down my neck as much as the D.I.s probably did at Newport.

So I'm still voting Danielle. We'll see if Lotus changes that. She seems promising on paper, though. Anyways, I'm slowly gathering material for an eventual writefagging, and I'm pretty hype for tonight's run.
>>
>>3388824
Eh, I'd rather have Kyou or Lotus as our backseater. Their talents can't really be hard countered unlike Danielle's. Once whoever we're up against figures out the solution to everything not tracking is to just throw a bunch of heat-seeking missiles (probably on Vampires) and witches at us I'd rather have a witch suited for dogfighting.

Also anon you do realize Lotus's mother is gonna sic the Hollywood media swill on us
>>
>>3388980
I realize that, but the counterplay to their counter there is that anything firing by eye or heatseeker simply can't keep up with a hard-flown wyvern. It's our job to counter everything danielle can't, and I believe we are perfectly capable of that.

As for lotus, I'm well aware of that, and it does throw a pretty solid speedbump in any plans to adopt her as an NFO.
>>
>>3388980
>Also anon you do realize Lotus's mother is gonna sic the Hollywood media swill on us
I imagine if we pick Lotus as our backseater Maman will be visiting her mom in the middle of the night and she won't raise a fuss no more.
>>
>>3388996
Lotus's mother is the kind of crazy person who wouldn't listen. She might be terrified at the time but then she'd turn around and go "I WAS THREATENED BY THE MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX!
>>
>>3389001
See, the issue is she can scream crazy things all she wants.....but it won't actually get her anywhere. Nobody who matters cares what she thinks, and she has no actual power.
>>
>>3388980
Maybe, but if she hasn't been fussing over her daughter's career choice by this point, she should have no reason to start later.
>>
>>3389009
She has media attention from certain sectors. She's not going to get us grounded but she could be annoying.
>>
>>3389017
A heck of a lot less annoying than the politics surrounding the imperial family. That quagmire *could* get us grounded with the right application of pressure.
>>
>>3389055
Imean, sure in theory they could. Unless there's a case of gross negligence it's not likely to happen though. The Imperial family in this timeline has been relatively hands on and Kyou is there chance to get in on the Wyverns.

There's also the angle to consider that so far Kyou is noticeably better than Danielle at everything not her specialty. I think Kyou is going to be a case of here's ultimate power but you're going to have to work harder for it.
>>
>>3389001
She might be crazy, but she isn't 100% wrong either. We've already seen witches in their early teens been recruited during wartime. And even during peace, being a target of government's "encouragement" to join military from young age just because you have a certain talent regardless of your wishes and dreams, is far from the best possible situation.
There haven't been exactly many examples of civilian witches in SWQ-verse.
>>
>>3389079
It's an odd variant of the X-men issue, except the mutations are more standardized and much more potent. Free will vs national security, etc. But there's not really a choice, if you're going to keep your military relevant, you gotta be able to counter enemy witches, and that means having witches of your own. And if the other guy has more witches than you, you can't really counter that.
>>
>>3388991
Kyou is so much better than Danielle it isn't even funny.

Danielle can spoof all the radars and locks in the world.

Kyou...just literally does not care about that. At all. She is just "Go ahead, fire a missile at me. See what happens." Not to mention she has physics breaking powers that let us ignore a lot of the problems with hard maneuvering in fighters, aka high-G's and acceleration. That is so good it isn't even funny. That is WELL worth the problems with the press.

Because of that Kyou lets us break the rules of dogfighting. We can ALWAYS press the attack. There will never be a point with Kyou where pointing a gun or missile at us will be enough to force us to back off. We were being cautious because it would be easy to be shot down, but with Kyou we can afford to be almost recklessly aggressive simply because with Kyou as our backseater it ISN'T recklessly aggressive.

Fact of the matter is her power far outstrips anything available, and is probably the best suited for our backseat. The potential political quagmire involved from that is WELL worth it.
>>
>>3387978
>[x] So you’ve decided, then?
>>
>>3389110
That's what I'm scared of. I know I'm the one who made the argument for her raw power, but I have to add the caveat that all that power comes at a cost, and we have yet to know what that cost is. There's always a catch, and that's something that I'm scared of. I'll admit it. I am shaking horrified at the thought of exactly what would lie in wait for us and the airframe if we fly with Kyou. Worst of all, if we're anything like our father, I'm horrified of what we could do to her. If we power her up, or god forbid let her draw power from some infinite power well in our own possibly gnome body, I'm afraid she's going to burn out more than herself via sheer unparalleled fire. She's a goddamn star, and eventually it has to burn out. It could be in 60 years, or with us it could be in one impeccably perfectly executed mission. So yes, she is without question the most powerful witch we will ever meet. And that's exactly what I'm afraid of. At least if she's not flying with us she's forced to hold back.
>>
>>3389079
Based on what Ghost said the "Witch reserve" or whatever is technically voluntary. You don't have to sign up but it's traditional. I imagine the armed forces are aware of that and who is actually interested in serving. So my guess is that there are plenty of civilian witches, we just don't deal with them.

The young ages of course aren't great and it's been implied that's changing but institutions like the witches are probably slow to change.
>>
>>3389110
Our single flight with her was a short skirmish, after which we were both winded. And most of that flight we flew sensibly, not putting stress on her. Sure, she can put out crazy amounts of power, but she's not got the stamina to keep it running for long.

>never a big enough gun.
That falls apart at some point. We don't have the faintest idea what the NKs or China or whoever has cooked up. We saw some crazy stuff last time, and it's been a long time since. I doubt China cares about the moral issues around the genetic engineering that went into Natalya, for one. But maybe a single large shot isn't what gets her. It could just as easily be the big standard round that came in after a couple hundred of it's fellows.

>not too reckless
Her power encourages wanton arrogance. You're king of the skies, until someone comes up with a silver bullet, and instead of being good, you've been leaning on raw power. Now you're forced into pure skill, you've lost the edge.
Never rely on pure power like that. Only take what you need, when you need it.
>>
>>3389140
......that's kinda paranoid I'm not gonna lie.

You're afraid of us burning her out? Gnomes burning out witches isn't a thing. We never did that with Merlin at all in '89, even at Berlin and Crete, and if it was gonna happen it would have happened there.

So you're worrying over nothing.

>>3389150
>Our single flight with her was a short skirmish, after which we were both winded. And most of that flight we flew sensibly, not putting stress on her. Sure, she can put out crazy amounts of power, but she's not got the stamina to keep it running for long.

That's a pretty faulty argument. We've already determined that the Wyvern is a deceptively heavy draw, especially when the witch isn't plugged. Secondly Kyou wasn't tired at all, what are you talking about?

>That falls apart at some point. We don't have the faintest idea what the NKs or China or whoever has cooked up. We saw some crazy stuff last time, and it's been a long time since. She tanked multiple railgun rounds with zero issues. In addition to tanking multiple witches, and several missiles, and she wasn't even approaching winded yet. You are really underestimating how powerful she is.

>Her power encourages wanton arrogance. You're king of the skies, until someone comes up with a silver bullet, and instead of being good, you've been leaning on raw power. Now you're forced into pure skill, you've lost the edge.
Never rely on pure power like that. Only take what you need, when you need it.

Your argument is essentially "We shouldn't fly with her because she's too powerful and therefor would make us weak."

That's a dumb argument, and you should feel bad for coming up with it.
>>
>>3389175
She tanked multiple railgun rounds with zero issues.
We tanked *one* railgun round. And it would be the height of arrogance to think that makes us invincible.
>>
>>3389140
>all that power comes at a cost, and we have yet to know what that cost is.
This is one of the things that's bothered me about her. Her duplicity. Her public face verus her absurd aggression in the cockpit. Her vague hints that "this isn't even my full power!", like she's trying to tempt us.The fact that she's very clearly hiding many things from us. Sure, she's got raw power in spades, but a shouty magic battery that won't be straight with us isn't all we need.

>>3389175
Neither Danielle nor us had any tiredness issues, and our flight with her was longer overall and had her using her power longer.
[][][]

>She tanked multiple railgun rounds with zero issues.
A single round, during a single, short engagement.

>Your argument is essentially "We shouldn't fly with her because she's too powerful and therefor would make us weak."
Try again. Anon's argument boils down to "Be powerful and good, instead of merely being powerful". If you only use the power when you need it, you can make that power go a lot further.
And I absolutely believe the US isn't the only ones that have innovated since the last war. Over reliance one any one thing increases the risk of being blindsided. In this case, assuming that because she can tank in this single, short flight means she could tank anything for forever is silly. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

The mild insults definitely help strengthen your argument though.

But I'm sure she's completely perfect and immensely powerful with no downsides whatsoever.
>>
>>3389204
>We tanked *one* railgun round.
That's fair, you're right. We tanked one railgun round with ZERO. ISSUE. after tanking whatever REDAIR could land on us, and there is nothing to suggest that we couldn't have tanked more.

You're absolutely right that it doesn't make us invincible but that's far better than what we could accomplish with Danielle.
>>
>>3389150
>>3389222
You shake your head, convinced you could have done better- but you don’t say anything, unwilling to ruin it for her. Still, the flight back is quiet- Danielle was clearly working hard back there, and is feeling pretty out of it.

So I know it's just a small part at the end of the thread but Danielle was not "just fine" at the end of our first run.
>>
>>3389223
See, my thinking on that is this is going to be a tradeoff. I can't imagine Ghost would offer us three choices and then make one the clear, runaway, "you're an idiot for not picking this." I definitely think on the surface Kyou is the strongest, but I think the minor issues we had--her aggression, the fatigue, the media attention, etc--are more or less a survey sample of what we'll contend with in more severity and detail.

Mind you the opposite of that holds true--if none of them are trap options, that includes her. I just don't think she's going to be so markedly superior to either of the alternates, otherwise they wouldn't be alternates.
>>
>>3389175
>multiple railgun rounds
Let the records show that but one round hit us before we made them break and head out, before one of them crashed.

>tanking multiple witches, and several missiles
I recall two witches attacking, but like a good wing element, only one fired, and only got one burst before our afterburner put her long behind. As for the missiles, nobody got a shot with those before the mission was called off. it was all us on the attack.
Kyou's shield is unquestionably strong, but we didn't get to test it like you say.

As for my paranoia, check out when katya flew with us in '89. I don't recall the exact quote, but she simply couldn't handle Frank. His flying tried to pull so much out of her on a training flight that she was horrified, and stamped with fear of him for quite some time. It didn't hurt that the plane crashed, resulting in a very broken leg. The only thing keeping frank in the air was merlin, and she's not going to be our backseat.

Plus I'm calling it now that the lancer went down via Kyou. She got too ambitious and possibly fired live. I'm not saying that's exactly what happened, but I wouldn't be surprised if her control was not up to the ridiculous lens she now has to focus her power through.
>>
>>3389246
Fired live what? We didn't have any live ammo and that would've been caught on radar.
>>
>>3389246
>fired live

I don't think she did that--but I WAS wondering if maybe she has some kind of power leech that doesn't discern between friendlies and enemies, possibly reaching out by her own power in the focus, possibly reaching out through the Wyvern's expanded systems.

This isn't for OR against her, incidentally. I just do think that might be an interesting little twist.
>>
>>3389253
yeah, that's the flaw in that theory, and it's a pretty big one. As I said, that's probably not what happened, but I'm suspecting that she had at least something to do with the training crash.
>>
>>3389242
The tiredness with Danelle was odd. There was what you quoted, then the session ended, there was a discussion of her stamina, and the next session she was perfectly fine, energetic even.
>>
>>3389222
>This is one of the things that's bothered me about her. Her duplicity. Her public face verus her absurd aggression in the cockpit.

She's a public figure. If you think a public figure isn't gonna have a public face and a private face, you're crazy. That's not duplicity that's the necessity of being royalty.

>Neither Danielle nor us had any tiredness issues, and our flight with her was longer overall and had her using her power longer.

Except she totally did, we had this discussion already.

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/3302867/#p3309594

>Still, the flight back is quiet- Danielle was clearly working hard back there, and is feeling pretty out of it.

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/3345657/#p3346990

>“I’m.. not sure.” Danielle says. “It’s demanding, but it’s soft? It’s hard to describe.” She says, after a minute. “I feel like I could fly in it forever, but after I’m out I just wanna find some place dark and warm and sleep forever.”

>Try again. Anon's argument boils down to "Be powerful and good, instead of merely being powerful". If you only use the power when you need it, you can make that power go a lot further.
>Over reliance one any one thing increases the risk of being blindsided.
>Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

And that's a really bad argument against Kyou and a much better one against Danielle. Danielle is a one-trick pony. She spoofs radar. That's a very specific trick. She can't do anything against EOTS and can't do much against heater shots. Outside of radar tricks she can't do much.

Kyou on the other hand is extremely strong in what we've seen so far, and has at least two very different talents, with the implication being that she has more waiting in the wings. So she has an extremely powerful and diverse moveset. That is the exact opposite of placing all your eggs in one basket.

>The mild insults definitely help strengthen your argument though.

Don't make dumb arguments and I won't insult you.

>But I'm sure she's completely perfect and immensely powerful with no downsides whatsoever.

She's not perfect but I'm really not seeing any downsides here. She's the imperial princess which means she's politically untouchable, she's powerful to the point of it being ridiculous, and while she's incredibly aggressive that probably has less to do with psychological instability and much more to do with being greener than cut grass combined with a powerset that highly encourages raw aggression.
>>
>>3389258
Imean, we weren't directly engaged when it blew since we were Raptor baiting so that'd be one hell of a trick.

>>3389275
That's true. I'm concerned about it because in the plane she was tired. Then afterwards, she was more peppy and Ghost put in a comment about her possibly putting up a front. Along with Anastasia's comment about her supposedly being distant to the rest of the witches has me more worried about Danielle issues than Kyous. Kyous are right there and can be compensated for. Danielle's are a mystery. And I don't think she won't have any issues, that's not Ghosts style.
>>
>>3389275
Honestly, per my idea about each flight being a survey sample of what to expect, I think that might have been a hint towards her being a better "endurance" witch. She bounced back fast, and she didn't have any issues while we were actually engaged, either. That's also after we punched out only one SAM site and our primary objective, leaving her to deal with everything else in a dedicated AA trap scenario--plus we used WEP pretty heavily to get in and out. Discussions with Cass and Merlin about her have also been positive, including her being described as a "dedicated navy witch," or whatever the wording was.

At this point, as someone who was interested in Danielle's performance because I love Wild Weasels and I love the idea of us having a No Sell Specialist as our backseater, I'm definitely not opposed to her being a wingwitch as opposed to our partner. I'm just mildly annoyed with the one anon sticking daggers in her at every opportunity, as I'm sure I will be when it's contestant number three's turn.
>>
>>3389304
>I'm just mildly annoyed with the one anon sticking daggers in her at every opportunity, as I'm sure I will be when it's contestant number three's turn.

Danielle is fun and seems like bro-tier wing witch material and I would love to have her in the quest as our dedicated wingman but as a backseater Kyou is better in pretty much all the ways.

Danielle did say she got a Gatorade after the flight, so that's probably why. Anyways, onto your earlier posts...

>if she hasn't been fussing over her daughter's career choice by this point, she should have no reason to start later
Lotus's mom will have definitely have reason to REE at us. Yes, she doesn't right now, but she will later. Lotus would be going from civilian work to active duty military. Wyvern crews are expected to solve problems, so her daughter would be in the thick of things as our backseater. Combine that with us being the up and coming new Bishop ace pilot...
You can see where I'm going with this. At least Lotus herself would have our back since she wants to be here. I hope she's as motivated as Kyou appears to be since she asked to work with any Wyvern crew. Bet she was surprised to hear who asked for her, heh.

>That quagmire *could* get us grounded with the right application of pressure.
On the possibility of Kyou getting pulled off liason duty - I don't really see that happening.

Well, unless a whole bunch of royal family members pass due to an attack. Seems kind of idiotic to play political games when shit is expected to happen any day with China breathing down their neck though. I'm not saying that's impossible, but Japan and China hate each other's guts.
I'd assume part of the reason they sent a Princess to the States was a big gesture of trust as well as the political equivalent of "please cover our asses when shit goes down". I mean, I'd assume we'd help anyways since we have great relations setting-wise, but we also sent someone important as a liaison as well - Cass. She's a Bishop too. They wouldn't want her to be withdrawn if they get another shot at getting a Bishop if they're really going for that.

>We don't have the faintest idea what the NKs or China or whoever has cooked up.
Not gonna lie, the war's gonna be FUN and also a complete mess. Totally agree with you on the genetics thing, plus I expect them to have scouted their population for male talents. Based on the info we got in the past threads, railguns, copy-vampires (I guess they'd be called Jiangshi there?) and pic related IIRC from the 89 run. China has a bit of a pride issue and I'd imagine salty over not gaining anything and losing a bit during WW3. I'm fully expecting them to seize their Stonehenge installation from the EDF, it's just too great for aerial coverage. They'd also definitely want to make their own super fighter that's entirely "theirs" instead of Soviet.
I'm gonna take a guess and say either the Varcolac or the Apsalis, though they'd obviously be under different names.
IMO the Varcolac looks like it'd be speedy - perfect for the amount of large amount of terrain China would need to cover for.
The Apsalis on the other hand looks like it could be a suped up J-20, it makes sense as they'd have something to work off of using the Vampire's tech.

>I have always favored aggression in combat because both it is expected of me and because I am aware of what I can do. I understand if this not something you are comfortable with, but you must understand I am much stronger than they are able to tell.”
I get the feeling that Kyou is WAY stronger than anyone can comprehend and no one knows what her limits are because no one is willing to point a railgun at a princess for scientific purposes.

Case in point.

[x] GSI cart?

“GSI cart?” You ask, hitting the switch to power the MFD back down and swiveling your head around to look at her.

She nods. “Ground systems interface” She explains, her sutter disappearing as it tends to when she’s talking about technology- or when she’s super into something and doing her thing. “We designed it for working with our wyvern, but I’ve been playing with the design and I’ve got it now so I can interface with MUI equipped wyverns.” She pauses. “Ooooor will be able to, once I get re-plugged.” She says, happily tapping your thigh with her feet.

“What will that mean for your test plane, though?” You ask. Her jet- along with her pilot, at that- aren’t equipped with the MUI links, just the older VDNI ones. While your aunt would happily go under the knife for the ‘upgrade’- you’re half sure she’d agree to sticking her brain in a vat, if it meant she could interface with the machine better- you don’t think your father will be so anxious to do so.

She shrugs. “I’ll have to design something to let newer implants work with older systems.” It’s almost a brush off- but then again, it’s not hard to believe, either- if anything, she’s probably already almost done with a prototype for that exact application.

“So when are you getting the surgery done?” You ask.

She pauses. “I-I’m not sure. Soon, I t-think.” She says, after a moment, then cranes her head around suddenly- instinct, you’re sure, since you have to look past her to see what she’s looking at. Kyou, with a small group of brass- you recognize the IJN’s duty uniform on an older man, the baseball cap on his head clear even from here with “KAGA” Spelled out in English across the front.

“W-we’ll talk about it later.” She says. “I-I’m sorry for not telling you.”

Man, I really don’t know who I’m leaning towards at this point. The F-14E IS the super tomcat, remember? It's based off the one-off prototype that Frank flew in Alaska.
>>

Is it though? I thought it was just an upgrade to the D model, rather than a clean sheet design that looked like the Tomcat?

It is, they popped a lot of the stuff that they were using for the ATF Flyoff birds in there, plus a Fibersteel airframe. That combined with other stuff that they were working on.

[x] We can talk after dinner. Have you told dad?

You’re not sure what to feel- while on the one hand, you’re kind of glad you’ll never have to worry about the aircraft’s maintenance or upkeep- or ever not being on the bleeding edge as far as equipment goes- you do have reservations about your aunt coming back to the active duty force to follow you.

“We can talk after dinner.” You say, grabbing one of her ankles as you stand to keep her from suddenly being off balance. “Have you told dad?”

She looks away. “I-I called but h-had to leave a message. H-he hasn’t called back yet.”

You nod, slipping past her on the canopy rail and offering a hand to help her down. she takes it for a second, pivoting off your fighter and back onto the air stair platform. “No surprise. Still, after dinner?” You say.

She nods. “I- y-yeah. We c-can talk then.” She says. “Y-you’re not mad, r-right?”

“Of course not.” You say. “Let’s wait till this evening, ok? We have company.”

She nods again, though she doesn’t look very relieved. “I-I think I’ll let you d-do most of the talking.” She says quietly, gesturing for you to lead the way down the stairs.

“Lieutenant.” Kyou greets with a bow, which you reflexively return before saluting the Japanese officers- and her, you think, since she does rank you. Their salutes are crisp and perfect- practiced, no doubt. “I had hoped you’d be here, since you know the aircraft better than I. Shõ-shõ Ishikawa, Honored Matron, this is my pilot, Lieutenant Laroux-Bishop, and his Aunt, Samantha Wells.”

There’s a flash of recognition in their eyes- it’s hard to miss the Bishop last name, and of course, your Aunt is well known in Japan. The matron smiles. “It has been some time, Miss Wells.”

“I-it’s admiral Wells again, Matron Matsuoka.” She corrects. “A-and I was about t-to go eat, if y-you’d excuse me.”

The smile falters a little, and there’s a pained look in the matron’s eye- but she simply nods as your aunt turns to leave. Kyou frowns, looking over at the other Japanese witch, but doesn’t comment. “I have been telling the admiral and the matron of our flight, Lieutenant.” Kyou says. “But they were eager to see our aircraft for themselves.”

“It seems plain.” The Kaga’s skipper says, suddenly, his voice a harsh rasp. “Your father’s aircraft was much more colorful.”

This is pure speculation, but I'd bet it comes from the navies having long traditions of having lots of rules and regs to keep sailors in line over long voyages. Liveries could be construed as a form of self-expression and/or defiance.

[x] He earned his art, sir. I intend to as well.

“He earned his art, sir.” You say, your voice neutral- deferential to some extent, but you like to think you keep a hint of challenge in there as well. “I intend to as well.”

“Huh.” The Kaga’s commander looks unimpressed- though he pauses. “I saw him fly a few times during the war. Midshipman aboard the Tone, back then. You’ll have to work to earn it.” The man says, still gazing up at the wyvern.

Kyou, for her part, is frowning, watching Merlin walk away. She turns to the Matron. “Ship’s matron, I feel as if there is information that is being kept from me.” She says, after a moment. The matron looks supremely uncomfortable- you know the story, or Merlin’s side of it, anyway- but you don’t really know if it’s your place to jump in here. Could be a lot of internal Japanese coven politics you don’t want to get involved in, especially if they were keeping it from the imperial family. Merlin’s been nothing but... well, herself, to Kyou- so she certainly isn’t expanding her problems with the coven’s matrons past the ones involved, but you still think it’s something the princess ought to know, especially if you end up flying with her.

[] Tell Kyou you’d planned to talk to Merlin after your dinner- perhaps she could join you there and ask Merlin?
[] Let it go- if it is internal politics, as you suspect, it’s none of your business.

All this talk about Kenji made me think if we didn't let the Kenji-Merlin be, not saying that I want them to seperate, but that we ignored Kenji most of the time.
In 89 everyone was in full acceptance of the two which lead to the neglect of Kenji's pssible hidden situation, but eh, since we weren't seeing any signs I still don't know who's fault it is.

I figured I'd follow the story. We're working up, so I'm just flying a training mission to intro characters. When shit hits the fan, my characters will go to whatever front heats up most likely. I figured I might as well get a story started instead of just waiting around for shit to happen. Writing requires exercising muscles, so rather than just taking notes and sitting on my thumbs, I'm actually putting those notes on paper as something to establish a story background before the hard shit happens.

Which is why we thought we shouldn't do anything, really.
But the thing is, I was talking about 89's players ignoring Kenji because nothing seems to be wrong, which really seems like it too. And I don't think Merlin knew about it either.

[x] Let it go- if it is internal politics, as you suspect, it’s none of your business.

You stay silent, and an uncomfortable pause builds before Kyou shakes her head. “We will discuss this later.” She says to the matron, before turning back to the wyvern, starting towards it. She avoids the air stairs, instead simply walking under one wing, a hand stretched out so she can run it along the smooth metal skin of your jet. The matron, for her part, remains there, although the Kaga’s skipper moves to join the princess, saying something to her as he catches up that gets him a nod from her.

“Your aunt- she is still angry?” The matron asks, a minute later.

“She hasn’t quite forgiven, no.” You respond, carefully. It’s not your place to get involved- but of course, you’ll side with your aunt over just about anyone.

There’s a sigh from the matron, and you see her shoulders slump. “I had feared as much.” She says. “I can’t ask for favors but-”

“I don’t wish to be involved, Matron.” You say, cutting her off. “No disrespect, but it’s not my place.”

She nods. “I understand. Her Highness, the princess, had indicated she was under the impression you would say as much.”

You shrug. “I’m a pilot first and foremost, Matron.” You say. “It’s my father that’s a guardian of witches. I’ll stand by my Aunt, but I won’t become involved.”

“I understand. Thank you for your honesty.” She pauses, looking after Kyou. “What was your impression of the princess?” She asks, after a moment.

“She’s aggressive to a fault in the air.” You say, not taking your eyes off the princess. “But she’s capable of backing it up and impressively strong.” You think you do a good job of keeping your voice neutral- it’s an assessment, nothing more.

The matron nods- you see the motion out of the corner of your eyes. “I had expected as much from the wolf princess. It is no great secret she’s been driving herself for a wyvern posting since she first laid eyes on one.”

You nod. “She leans on her magical strength more than I’m strictly comfortable with.” You say, “But at the same time, I suspect there’s more going on there than I was told.”

You turn your head fractionally, enough to see the matron’s distinctly uncomfortable expression- as much of a confirmation as you’re going to get. She stays silent- indicating that anything she says, she feels, would be something she can’t- or at least shouldn’t- tell you.

“Overall, she’s far from bad.” You say, thinking. “But she needs work.”

“You are green alike.” The matron says, with a nod. “She had the option of taking additional flight classes offered by none other than the princess consort Jessica Bishop- but she turned them down to enter the liaison program sooner. Her submission for the wyvern program was...“ She hesitates. “Perhaps not a surprise, but unexpected.”

“How so?” You ask.

“She did so almost as soon as her posting as a liaison witch was approved.” She says, prompting another pause as you don’t respond, filing the information away. “You, of course, are the first pilot to draw her name. She was thrilled that she made the first possible opening on a crew. I am sure that if you talk with her, and as you fly together, that she will season into a capable partner.”

You keep quiet- you’d already figured as much. She’s hungry for the slot, but at the same time, you’ve still got two more flights before selection.

The silence stretches for another minute before Kyou and the Kaga’s skipper head back. Kyou looks quite pleased- the older navy man, on the other hand, is still unreadable.

“Lieutenant, we must go.” She announces. “I will meet you for dinner in the city at eighteen hundred hours?” It’s phrased- perhaps deliberately- as a question. A quick glance at your watch indicates that you have plenty of time, almost five and a half hours, so you nod.

“Eighteen hundred.” You confirm.

She smiles- a genuine one, as near as you can tell. “I look forward to it.” She says. “Until then.”

The matron and the Kaga’s skipper flank her as she walks away- you notice that, unlike your aunts, she rarely seems to have imperial guard around her at any given time- which is very curious, given who she is.

With six hours left till dinner, though, you have to leave yourself- it will take a few hours to get your full mess dress sorted, since you’ve never worn it before, and you’re sure this is going to be the opposite of low-key.

I agree that there's no reason to dislike Kyou. She's great. Ridiculously powerful, and certainly adorable to boot. Overeager, but who wouldn't be when faced with the chance of a lifetime.
Still, I won't be voting for her unless something drastic changes, because she is dangerous for reasons I stated earlier in the thread. She scares me. Her raw power scares the crap out of me. I don't want to play around with fate.

That you're afraid her power is gonna burn her or us out? It don't work like that boss, in fact it's probably the opposite here, less crazy bullshit we have to do because Kyou can literally just tank it, the less likely we are to burn out. The reason Katya was afraid of what happened is that she literally was not powerful enough to give Frank the level of mystic support needed, and it got her thinking about whether or not she was idealizing Frank in her head. That is most certainly not going to be an issue with Kyou.

What's more than that, there's ZERO counterplay to her shield. The counter play to her shield is Hit Harder, and it's kinda hard to hit harder than a magi-tech EML. And the breaking physics shit? Forget about it, there's no counterplay to that either. And considering what China has probably been cooking up, I would much rather have Kyou in the backseat, able to dodge or tank the hits, than Danielle and bet on whatever it is having a radar lock targeting system, instead of electronic, or magical, or computer aided visual, or heater or whatever.
>>
>>3390985
And if we have to tangle with the Chinese version of Natalya, would you rather have Kyou in the backseat or Danielle?
>>
>>3390985
That's the problem. I'm not afraid for us. She's a star, and I'm afraid that instead of slowly burning out over 60 years, she's going to go supernova, and it will end very rapidly, and very badly for her.
>>
>>3390991
I really don't think that's an issue dude. Merlin never got burned out by Frank in '89, and she was stronger than Kyou in her talent areas. The closest that ever happened was Berlin, and even then Ghost made it pretty clear that what happened to Merlin there was no worse than what would have happened to a normal witch if they'd pushed themselves that hard.
>>
>>3390991
There is literally no reason to think this. You have no evidence for a fringe theory when the opposite is probably more likely, and her great power means she will endure in good health longer, because witches can use magic for that.
>>
>>3390985
I'm done arguing, I pushed thing too far, but this sort of thing is what prompts those aggressive posts. Every single time anon says something negative about the princess, another anon has to quibble about it. They can't just let it lie. It's a concern I personally have. I may be paranoid, but there is no superman. Nobody has that much raw power without some kind of major as yet unseen flaw. I have no doubt she really is just so powerful, and it's entirely possible that she doesn't have any drawback, considering her powerful lineage. I hope to christ that is true, but I don't wish to take that chance.
>>
>>3391024
I dare say that flaws are what make stories like this even more enjoyable. If everyone was peak-performance, and no severe downsides, then it just becomes another basic run.
>>
>>3391032
I wholehearted agree, which is why the "Kyou is perfect" arguments ring a little hollow. Flawed characters are more interesting, and why even offer a choice if the competition is so obviously outmatched?
It stands to reason then that her flaw is very large to compensate for her strong benefits. It'd be much better if we could figure out what her major downsides are before making our selection, but how are we going to figure it out? She's certainly not going to tell us, she wants into the program to strongly.
>>
So... Did anyone else make note of Merlin saying if we didn't take Lotus she'd offer her a job like Danielle? From the sounds of things if we take PHOENIX we'll effectively get Danielle AND Lotus as witches in the squadron - using VARIABLE STRIKERS since Merlin decided to become our crew chief.

We've all been making good points about our selected backseaters, but I'm thinking with the way everything's been presented so far, this is what Ghost is going for. Course, if we do this we'd ALSO get to deal with EVERYONE'S PROBLEMS. Princess shenanigans, Danielle's possible PTSD, and Lotus's crazy mom... It's a dream come true for Ghost since he's into girls with problems!

It's also a way to calm down the waifu wars, as it's a chance for any of our 3 picks and maybe any others down the line. Or maybe we don't romance anyone. Or we could go for a harem end again, you mad lads...

Anyways, I also feel it's worth mentioning that whatever witch we take, we'll usually be on a team with another Wyvern (and whatever their onboard talent is) along with any other witches we get, so keep in mind how we'd work together with them too.
>>
>>3391057
You are 100% correct, and she's certainly not a "perfect character". She's got flaws, and she's a more interesting character for them. But in regards to picking her as our backseater, there are zero downsides to that.
>>
>>3391092
Pretty sure she was referring to Danielle, she did say she wanted to talk to her some more in the morning after we had dinner.
>>
>>3391110
>But in regards to picking her as our backseater, there are zero downsides to that.
Anon, we're picking a backseater. For this to be a worthwhile selection process, all the choices have to be reasonable. If one of them has "zero downsides", that makes them the only reasonable choice. Thus, she has to have a flaw (a significant one to account for her benefits) to balance things out.

I'm not saying they are interchangeable, but they have to at least be close in overall usefulness, otherwise this selection process is a farce.
>>
>>3391124

This is not an optimization problem. Pick the most interesting, not the most useful.

Alright so we've got two girls so far.

Danielle:

Pro's: Radar? What the fuck is radar? Not something we have to worry about. Combat vet. Fit girl.

Meh: Pretty average all around otherwise. Previously SEAD focused. We're in an Air Domination fighter.

Cons: Possible PTSD. Supposedly distant to fellow witches.

Kyou:

Pro's: Shield is omnidirectional, hyper powerful and she's apparently bursting with energy. Some sort of physic's/G nullification. Japanese Imperial family means Matron's can do fuck all. Long dark haired princess type. Supposedly more under the hood we haven't seen.

Meh: Used to getting her way, yet polite and differs to us like a proper backseater. Looking to move in right away.

Cons: Aggressive to a fault in the air. Princess means politics and media attention. Hidden depths are not always good.

Feel free to comment but I think this is pretty fair on both of them.
>>
The way I see it, Kyou is the volatile option. Both ability and temperament wise. She's very strong, but not tempered by experience, she seems like she always assumes she wins. She has good self-control, but she feels invincible, which is not true. If her abilities are artificial or enhanced, that probably means there are more of a similar scale out there somewhere, and she seems to have unusual reactions with the conventional tech on the bird. With Merlin as tech support she can obviously iron any problems out in time but we still might have some problems when something unexpected happens. She's eager to fly, but if we can't get her to be actually flexible, we're gonna have the kind of personality problem the selection process is supposed to iron out.

Danielle is a much more subtle partner. Her abilities aren't flashy, but seemed pretty effective, and didn't really take too much juice out of anybody flying around it seemed. She's a bit more down-to-earth and professional. But if we did pick her, we know obviously she doesn't have the pure power potential Kyou does. We'd have to be pickier in how we fly. She also seems relatively normal for a witch, so she may not be prepared for the sort of weird shit that flying with us would inevitably entail, both in air and on ground. But she thinks Maman is cool, that's a plus.

BUT, we're not through the selection process. We've got one more prime candidate to fly with, we have more time to spend with Kyou, and another flight to let Danielle show her stuff. The selection process is obviously a big deal, keep an open mind.
>>
>>3391173
Decently balanced overall. I'd shift
>Used to getting her way,
and
>Looking to move in right away.
to Cons, but they're not severe.
I'd also add
>hunting for the D
and
>not hunting for the D
as Cons and Pros to Kyou and Danielle respectively, but that's a taste thing mostly. Or maybe I'm overthinking. Daniel hasn't shown interest, at least. Kyou is debatable.

Thanks for being level-headed.

I still want to see an EML+Sakamotospawn combo myself.
>>
>>3391111
Went back to see, forgot that tidbit. You're right.

I still wouldn't put it past Merlin though. Since Lotus is supposed to be a test-pilot she'll be interested in her all the same. Plus, Lotus might also be interested in working under her as Merlin's considered a legend in aeronautics. I have to wonder how that arrangement would work though, Merlin works for Chance Vought while Lotus works for Lockheed. I THINK the variable strikers belong to the Navy, but I might be wrong about that - they could also belong to Merlin herself or Chance Vought.

Corporate shenanigans might get in the way, but because the two would be in Navy commissions that might possibly get waived.
I also get the feeling that wouldn't stop Merlin, she'd just build another one...
>>
>>3391178
>BUT, we're not through the selection process.
>keep an open mind.
This is the single most important thing. We've still got a third contender. Don't go making a decision just yet.

Also well thought out. Good job anon.
>>
>>3391193
The looking to move in right away seems to be pretty standard in practice given the already existing suites so that's meh. Just something Morgan didn't expect perhaps.

The used to getting her way is meh now, she's not been pushy about it but it could certainly be a con in the long run.

Hunting for the D is still up in the air IMO. I think Danielle made a few comments about Morgan at one point or another but nothing major.

Kyou I'm not certain is gunning for the D either so much as somebody she can finally confide in fully. It's still an option but she's not been to Krupinski levels of "Fuck me on the table" or anything.

Though as everyone is saying, we need to keep an open mind out since we've got Lotus and another Danielle run.

I'm actually pretty interested in Lotus myself, so we'll have to see how it goes.
>>
>>3391193
>Or maybe I'm overthinking. Daniel hasn't shown interest, at least. Kyou is debatable.

Pretty sure you're over thinking it, neither has shown any interest in us outside a team-mate level. Kyou has shown some interest, but that's more her being a Wyvern-sexual than anything for us.
>>
>>3391213
I am like 110% positive that Kyou is a Wyvern-sexual.

Though to be honest, Lotus is gonna have to have some pretty serious chops and some super interesting personality and character stuff to actually go on the table for me, but I wanted to fly with Young or Sakamoto originally before Kyou proved as amusing as she is.

Kyou seems to be someone whose every suggestion and idea would have to double check (at least at first) which could have consequences in combat.
>>
>>3391484
>Kyou seems to be someone whose every suggestion and idea would have to double check (at least at first) which could have consequences in combat.
A very good point, and one we should keep in mind. Upshot, since she's green, she should improve. And we can help guide that improvement, help her learn her limitations.
Personally I worry about what might happen to Kyou if she winds up with a pilot who isn't as cool and calculating as Morgan.
>>
Do we actually have to fly with Danielle a second time? Is anyone so on the fence about her abilities compared to Kyou? We agreed to a second flight when it was just her around to see if she’d be a good fit at all, but she’s so obviously eclipsed. Why waste time?
>>
>>3391527
Simple. We don’t know what she can do when we’re going full bore Ace Combat protagonist. Maybe she’s got some hidden ability that shines in a dogfight. Who knows, but that’s what we’re going to find out. Also, she’s cute, so more time with her is not a bad thing
>>
>>3391527
I want another flight with her. I think people are putting way too much stock into Ghost saying she was tired once and did perfectly fine otherwise, especially when she was in better shape than us later on.

Then again I wouldn't take it if it cuts into Lotus time in any way, since I think all 3 girls deserve a fair shake.
>>
>>3391527
>>3391571
Not gonna lie, I honestly think we're getting the reflight because the first one didn't actually show off what Danielle can do. I think Ghost is giving us another crack at that one to make sure we're actually equipped to make the call on our backseater and know what we've got on our hands.

TL;DR I don't think she's going to be "just" a one-trick pony and he wants to make sure we know that before we lock our pick.
>>
>>3391999

Yeah, Ghost does seem to deliberately be addressing concerns which the audience has in the quest itself, such as the "matron plant" paranoia.

There was a bit of negativity directed at Danielle after the flight, combined with shadowrunning, but we also ended up playing that one very cautious and by the book, when what they wanted us to do was play Ace Combat and fly through a tunnel and blow up all the SAMs and then climb on to the wing and box with an aggressor witch. So with hindsight, we can do another run to try and feel out her abilities and actually do some more impressive shit.
>>
We need to know if Danielle can take airborn radars and radar guided missile seekers off the table as well as ground/ship radars and the associated SAMs. If she can hand us near-invulnerability to radar that is a MUCH bigger deal than just being good at SEAD. Having a massively powerful shield is awesome, having a witch that avoids us even getting shot at because they can’t find us or are reduced to flinging heatseekers at us is a worthy competitor.

So I’m hoping for a hit-and-run profile for the re-flight against an AWACS and its escorting fighters. That’s a vitally important mission profile in a real shooting war (taking down airborn radars may be the most important early-war AAW strike), and one likely to be assigned to a Wyvern in a real operation. Let’s see how Danielle does in flying into the teeth of an airborn radar and evaluate accordingly.
>>
Yeah, but who cares? This is superwitch vs normie witch. Normie witches are no longer relevant. She can play around with the gundam suit. Lotus too. Why spend another week playing with the second string?
>>
Because best guess if we’re taking on the ChiComs and the DPRK - and I think it’s at least worth considering if we want to put said superwitch’s shield up against SAM’s with a circular kill probable measured is hundreds of meters (not to nuclear tipped surface to air missile) as opposed to not getting painted in the first place. I’m not saying that raw power isn’t a worthy consideration, I’m just saying let’s consider our probable battlespace and the pros and cons of each backseater before we write our other options off. It may very well be that raw power is the way to go, but we ought to reserve judgment until we’ve seen all our options.
>>
>>3392947

Yeah, I'm not really opposed to Kyou or anything, but I also don't assume she's actually literally invincible. Just because nobody has thrown enough shit at her to break through doesn't mean "enough shit" doesn't exist, and if we start flying with such an obvious advantage the enemy is gonna start working real hard to stop it. And unlike Frank, Morgan's name is pre-made here.

It's a big choice, keep the open mind, think about all the variables and be a bit meta - assume Ghost will not let us cruise control for cool no matter who we pick.

And also before anybody goes "there's no way anybody could like Lotus enough for her to matter", do remember how the last quest turned out with a field narrowed to three primary choices. And still Maman got a slice in, too. Ghost at least is getting a bulk of work out of the way now, since unless something real unusual goes on we're probably locked in with the backseater choice.
>>
>>3393086
That only happened because the vote was drawn out until the very end of the quest and wasn’t based on their (admittedly similar) skill levels. This is the exact opposite scenario. They’re all good, but one is better. Kyou’s downside compared to the others is he status and nature, which really doesn’t matter as much. She’s objectively the best.
>>
>>3391527
Really? I view it the other way around. Kyou has ability, but the mismatch is way too obvious. She seems to be "not the right sort".
>>
>>3393263
Which will be sorted with plugs. That’s without getting into how textbook safe we’ve been playing it. Last quest we did things that were borderline, and even literally, suicidal. And. It. Worked. This quest, while playing a character described as competitive and willing to push things past his own limits, we are afraid to get targeted by simulated fire. It’s beyond me why we would ever LARP as a stealth fighter when we are supposed to establish dominance over any and all airspaces. I don’t get why players are so compelled to meme Chad ‘89 vs Virgin ‘16. Several have even stated that they are familiar with the first quest. What’s the motivation to play this so differently? Or is it unintentional?

>Which will be sorted with plugs.
Fairly certain he's talking about personality. The plugs will exacerbate that issue, not mitigate it.

>What’s the motivation to play this so differently? Or is it unintentional?
You answered your own question. It is a deliberate attempt to not play Frank or Young 2.0. It's a way to make him be his own character both officially, and to be a different style of play for us anons, on the ground and in the air.

Having been through all the SWQs and most spinoffs (As far as I'm aware), I've always erred on the side of caution. It's the kind of way I run things. Obviously I've been outvoted plenty, but the one thing I do agree on is saving lives. If our actions would save one or more of our witchy companions or forces on the ground, I always voted for our own reckless charge to engage and save them. When there's nobody at risk though, I don't want to force our allies to do the same to save us because we went and did something stupid.

During vietnam, the Delta forces training under Chargin' Charlie started with this message.
"Men, if you go off to combat, you'll die, and your mother will get a letter that says 'Your son is dead because he was stupid. With this training, your mother's letter will only read 'Your son is dead.' If you're lucky, she might not even get a letter at all."

Yeah. And Frank also nearly died multiple times, nearly got other people killed multiple times, and DID die only to be brought back to life by the power of love and plot. The point of this quest is to NOT be a big dumb golden retriever with tomcat shrapnel in his ribs.

Yikes. At least now I know that it’s intentional, at least for those still lurking. I guess it’s slightly less frustrating that there’s some thought behind it, but it’s still beyond me why anyone would want to play an anime ace combat magical adventure in the most serious and cautious way possible. Seems a bit dull.

As for the plugs... the mind link is supposed to make the pilot in witch be able to be as in sync as possible. So they’d have greater empathy for each other’s thoughts and actions. It’s why they end up as couples so often. Less room for dumb misunderstandings.
>>
>>3394281
>but it’s still beyond me why anyone would want to play an anime ace combat magical adventure in the most serious and cautious way possible. Seems a bit dull.

Seriously, right? That mentality is dumb and boring, and leads to boring stories. Let's actually do some fun and exciting shit.
>>
>>3394281
> but it’s still beyond me why anyone would want to play an anime ace combat magical adventure
There's more than one camp in here. '89 and SWQ before it have a healthy history of at least making a good play at making their military aspects grounded in actual military weapons, gear, and thought processes. Compare to MercCommand's Pararescue Quest, which only made a passing effort at such things, despite being in the same setting. Personally, it's one of the things I already miss from '89. The farther we get into the future we get, the more things seem to be getting more scifi and less milsim.

>the mind link is supposed to make the pilot in witch be able to be as in sync as possible.
That's a potential side effect, not the main purpose. The point of the plugs is for better input of information and better output of responses. Even if synchronization was the point, the reason the vetting process is so strict is you want your crew to be as compatible as possible before you put them together, to minimize the issues with sticking two people that don't get along inside each other's heads.
>>
>>3394319
>That's a potential side effect, not the main purpose

I think we've kinda determined that it's just a straight side-effect at this point, and a beneficial one at that. A crew that's in sync with each other is a crew that's anticipating each other's actions, creating an efficiency of action. That's actually why a lot of the writers who wrote on force organization and morale suggested keeping units together instead of rotating them around, because that kind of unit cohesion is really hard to train and impossible to force.
>>
>>3394311
>>3394311
Serious can be fun, it's just a different kind. Some of us find it boring to assume we have plot armor and can do whatever we want. Or like the idea that our choices actually matter, meaning it's possible to fail.

There's a balance of course, some of us just prefer that balance at a different point.
>>
>>3394281
One of the reason's that I'm playing Morgan slightly differently is that Morgan and Frank were presented differently to start with.

Frank was full on Maverick when Ghost started 89 and I'm pretty sure he thought we were going to go "Balls to the Wall" as it were. Except he gave us Merlin and then we promptly made Frank about as responsible as he could be.

Morgan has been presented as much more calm, thoughtful and reserved to start with due to Maman. So he should play different than Frank in the first place. Going out of your way to make different choices than Frank is meta but Morgan should not be a Frank clone either.
>>
>>3394337
If we were playing SpecOps Witches 2016, sure, that'd be hella fun. But we're playing Ace Combat Witches 2016. Playing "This Is A Sneaking Mission" in an Aerial Dominance fighter is boring as shit.

>>3394347
Playing the cold-calculating, making high-angle deflection shots ace could be cool. Playing overly-cautious, never take any risks EVER, is boring as hell. If you want to play that, go play a game where you're playing as a B-2 pilot. Or an AWACS with no guns.
>>
>>3394356
>Ace combat quest
No, this is Strike Witches Quest '16. The ace combat influence is strong here than in '89, but strike witches is still the main focus. If you want a fun romp, go read Merc's quests. I can't stand them personally, but plenty of people seem to like them.
Don't try to push anons out because you don't like what they like.
>>
>>3394356
The fact that we're in the Wyvern program at all means we take risks. I'm not going to be voting for never taking risks, Morgan knows they need to be taken and is will to do so. We just don't have to play like Frank to be a badass fighter pilot.
>>
>>3394336
Sure, but it's still not the primary function of the plugs. They can be used without messing with that functionality.
But the intention of that isn't really important. More importantly, did you catch the rest of that reply?
> the reason the vetting process is so strict is you want your crew to be as compatible as possible before you put them together, to minimize the issues with sticking two people that don't get along inside each other's heads.
I'm deliberately leaving off our compatibility with various witches in hope we can avoid another pointless argument, but sticky two people that don't align well together is a bad idea in a very expensive plane.

That's why it's called Ace Combat Quest, right? Oh wait. Ace has always been a minor influence on a PF(tm) SW themed quest, though as time went on it did increase overall.

>OG SWQ
And SWQ flipped like a bipolar between amazing realistic air combat and gritty "emotions" and manic trolling. '89 fixed the bipolar issue, added the ace influence, and softened things up overall.
I certainly would have never hung around if ace combat had been the primary inspiration (or original SW for that matter)

Btw, why isnt Kyou already plugged if her goal is to be a wyvern witch regardless of pilot?
>>
>>3394688
Because there are more witch candidates than pilot candidates, and getting the plugs is a major surgery involving the brain and spine. So it makes sense to only get the plugs after being confirmed for a crew. Less chance of something going wrong and ended up damaged. So even if it's unlikely that Kyou won't be selected either by us or the next pilot through the pipeline, she won't get the plugs until after she's confirmed.

This. All of this.

Also, the paranoia over SAMs and inferior fighters/witches is unreal. I don’t have enough hours in the day to break down how much nork and chinese air defense is more about saturation than precision and I’m sure there is at least one person that will disagree based on what some field manual or rumint says, but they’d be wrong. That and it’s irrelevant for any defensive fight anyway. Go ahead and pick the SEAD witch when we are probably going to end up defending a carrier or ground elements against waves of mostly shitty planes.

By choice. Contact- already limited- dropped off significantly postwar, to the point where even marstech, at that point probably the biggest joint company, ended up in serious danger of being bought up. They're still around and independent after a major reshuffle, but only just- and most of their original mission of adapting martian technology to human use has been abandoned in favor of applying what they have to aerospace and deepspace applications.

Ok guys, sorry about the delay. OP took a bit longer than I'd planned, trying to do a bit of research. Should have done it yesterday, to be honest, kinda got caught in a funk. We're good now though!

===================================

As it turns out, ‘a few hours’ is a reasonable estimate for getting your dress uniform put together- even when aided by a public relations commander.

He appeared, along with someone from the state department, an hour or so after Kyou left you at the pad, taking you in tow first to clothing issue, then to one of the changing rooms in the ops building, where your brand new dress uniform was hung and the commander started ‘guiding’ you through the process of making it perfect to spec- he’d even brought along a set of calipers.

The state department bureaucrat, meanwhile, was going over the do and don’t list of forbidden subjects- don’t talk about Japanese war reparations from 1989- a touchy subject with the UN, as part of them included one of the proposed Stonehenge basing sites on the Kamchatka peninsula, and don’t talk about any potential deal regarding the Wyvern sale, which has been tied up since sometime last decade, it feels like.

“You’ll be going to Island Prime. Steakhouse on the waterfront, by the airport.” the man says, pushing his glasses up his nose with a finger. “We’ve already contacted the management, so you’ll have the best table they’ve got. Order what you want, we’ll reimburse you. Expect a little Japanese press presence, maybe something from the local news. We’ll have a PR team nearby so they don’t take too many pictures, but expect them.”

You nod.

“You won’t be driving, we’ve got a vehicle out front for you.” He continues. “There’s going to be a security presence there, if anything happens, follow their directions.”

That gets a laugh from the commander, prompting the state department man to turn and look at him with an exasperated expression. “Something funny?”

“Did you forget who you were talking to?” The commander asks. “Tell me, Lieutenant, how much did your mother teach you about combat?”

It’s not a loaded question- and it’s semi-rhetorical anyway, at least in this case. Your truncated SERE time is probably well enough known by this point for him to be well aware that you know how to do a lot of bad things to people- including cadre, if it comes to it. You’d heard they were allowed to break bones, and didn’t much fancy allowing their healwitch to practice on you.

LOCAL SCARY BROWN PILOT
>>
[x] Maman made sure I could handle anything short of a company of grunts, sir.

“Maman made sure I could handle anything short of a company of grunts, sir.” You respond. At least, you think, that’s what she always claimed- as long as it wasn’t in open country somewhere, and they made a few mistakes, you were entirely capable of escaping and evading- and leaving more than a few bodies behind you. It’s occured to you more than once if you’d have had a taste for it, you’d have made a scary hitman.

Probably would have made more money, too.

He nods, checking the few ribbons on your uniform one more time. “I figured as much. Steve, don’t forget who this kid is- he’s Brigitte Laroux’s son.

Steve- the state department man- frowns, but nods. “Yeah, ok, fair. Still, listen to the security team if there’s trouble, and leave any weapons here on post.” He shoots a glance over at the commander, who snorts. “This isn’t an official visit, but keep in mind they’re gonna report it, it’s big news in Japan already and will probably attract some attention. You got everything?”

You nod. “Yessir. Don’t discuss the war reparations or any deal involving the wyvern, listen to security’s directions if they’re necessary. Leave the tomahawk and my Bowie knife at home.”

Steve sighs. “Yes. that. Alright, that’ll do. He ready to go?” He addresses the last to the commander, who steps back, looking at your hanging uniform one more time before nodding.

“I’d get a chief in here to check behind me normally, but yeah, I think so.” He says. “Alright Lieutenant, go change, let me have a look at you.”

“Yes, sir.” You say, standing up off the chair you’ve occupied what feels like the last short eternity and collecting your uniform, draping it over an arm before heading around the corner to change. The uniform feels stiff and uncomfortable, and still smells new. Still, upon folding your flight suit and stacking it next to your boots, you walk back around the corner.

The commander looks you up and down, reaching out to adjust your tie once. “Not bad, son, not bad.” He says, after a moment. “Nowhere near enough fruit salad yet, but if your parents are any indication, there will be eventually. Steve?”

Steve nods. “Yeah, looks good, I guess. Your ride’s out front, lieutenant.” He says. “You’ll be there ten minutes before she’s scheduled in, there should be an IG detachment waiting there as well as a couple local cops and a navy security team. Don’t worry about the press, any Japanese reporters there are going to have been talked to before they flew out, and any from the states will be kept back by the security team. Any questions for us before you go?”

[x] No, sir.

“No, sir.” You say, fighting the urge to loosen your tie a bit- you’ve never liked ties, or anything around your neck, really.

He nods. “Good. Your ride’s out front, let’s go.” He turns towards the door and starts walking, expecting you to follow- like you have a choice in the matter.

The car is an unmarked black sedan with tinted windows- for a second, you almost think it’s an unmarked police car, though your driver’s a marine in his service uniform. You note he’s a provost marshal officer- and he’s under arms, to boot. He salutes you, and you return it by reflex. There’s no last second warnings as you step into the passenger seat, and you’re rolling as soon as he closes the car door.

The drive takes almost an hour. Traffic, especially down this way, isn’t light, and the restaurant, even with the evident security outside, is busy enough it takes a moment to get out of the car. You make out the San Diego police immediately- they’re supposed to be seen, a deterrent to anyone planning anything stupid, like the local protest brigade getting wind of this dinner and attempting to get close to a member of the imperial family to chant their slogan- whatever it is- at them. Even stateside, the imperial family is hard for most people to approach. Of course, that’s just the visible security- the IG isn’t going to be so visible, and the navy security team is no doubt nearby.

You only have to wait a minute before one of the men- IG, no doubt, judging by his uniform and shaven head, approaches you. Your suspicion is confirmed as soon as he speaks- addressing you in Japanese. “Lieutenant Laroux-Bishop.” He says- not a question. You nod. “I’m agent Takehiko, Imperial Guard. I assume you’ve been briefed on our presence?”

You nod again.

1/2
>>
“Good. If there is trouble, our only concern is the safety of her imperial highness. You’ll be expected to follow our instructions. If you can’t or don’t, you’ll have to be treated as a potential threat.”

You nod a third time, resisting the urge to poke at the man a bit. Your maman always had a lot of respect for the abilities of the IG- they’re extensively trained and drilled, some of the best close protection personnel available, the equal of the secret service. But they also tend to be overconfident and a bit cocky- they don’t dismiss threats, but they have every confidence in their ability to defeat them. They’d be a challenge for you, no doubt, but you’re reasonably sure you could take out a security detail if you had to.

You shove the thoughts aside as a black SUV pulls up and the IG agent melts away- Kyou’s own close protection detail will be nearby, and it’s not his job to remain close, but to intercept any trouble before they have to. They take painfully long to get out of the vehicles- the driver exiting first, crossing to the front of the SUV before opening the passenger door.

Kyou steps out, clad in a dress of deep red, a vertical slit up the side revealing no small amount of leg, though you have to admit it’s still less skin than the IJN duty uniform. She nods towards you as you bow respectfully, waiting for her close guard- who looks like he could have made a solid run in the sumo circuit- to exit the vehicle before crossing the pavement to you.

“Lieutenant.” She says as a greeting, looking past you up to the restaurant. “I’ll admit, I had a little trouble waiting. I’ve been looking forward to this. I’ve heard this restaurant has excellent steak, I’m a little impatient to try it.”

Ok, calling the vote here!

[x] Let’s go, then, before too much press shows up.

“Let’s go, then, before too much press shows up.” You say.

She smiles- a real, genuine smile, not the plastic PR smile you know all too well from your own family in public. She slips her arm through yours and leans in close. “Ignore them, it’s far easier.” She offers in a light whisper as advice as you head up the walkway into the building.

Inside, the staff recognize you instantly, of course- and you’re quickly ushered to a private dining room on the upper floor, with a stunning view of the city across the bay. Kyou, however, selects the seat with the better view of Halsey field’s flight line- hard to make out in the twilight, probably impossible to see at night from here.

There’s a few photographers and one camera there as well- you sit patiently, working to hide your growing unease at their presence, until a slight gesture from Kyou summons her guard- who ushers them out. “Sometimes,” She says, as the door closes, looking out across the water at Halsey field, “It is good to have the guardsmen around. I trust they didn’t bother you too much?”

You shrug. “Nothing I didn’t expect.” You say. She smiles again.

“They’re absolutely terrified of you.” She says lightly, then giggles. “They counseled against this, can you believe it? They insisted that if we were to dine together, we should do so in the imperial quarters of the Kaga where they could have a platoon of landing troops on standby.”

You blink, and she laughs again at the expression. “It’s suspected the mother of night taught you more than you advertise. I suspect I’d be in mortal danger, but I also suspect if you were going to do something, you’ve had plenty of opportunity to this point.”

You tilt your head some- an indication you agree, without saying anything. She smiles. “Of course. But we’re here simply to talk. I don’t wish to be able to only discuss one thing, but I must ask- between us, what was your opinion of my performance in the aircraft?”

[x] I was impressed, but I feel we’d need a lot of work to be an effective team.

“I was impressed,” You start, trusting that she’s a professional and will understand what you mean without taking offense. “But I feel we’d need a lot of work to be an effective team.”

She smiles. “It’s odd. I was thinking the same.” She responds. “go on, though. I would like to hear your opinion honestly.”

“You’re too aggressive and confident.” You say, getting a nod out of her- she expected as much, you think. “You’re incredibly powerful, that much is evident, but you lean on your power an awful lot, which could be an issue in a protracted engagement. Even Natalya gets tired eventually.”

She smiles at the name, but nods. “I had forgotten she was one of your adopted sisters as well.” She says. “I am not sure if I told you, but I wasn’t able to display the full range of my ability during our shortened test.” She says. “I cannot tell you anything more, but I suspect your aunt may know more about me than she tells you.”

You nod- Merlin indicated she had suspicions, but you’re not going to talk to her until later- and may honestly let this sit. If you don’t end up flying with her, there’s no reason to worry about it.

“If I may, as well, I believe you’re a capable pilot, wonderfully able to fly and fight the wyvern and push it to it’s limits. I think after flying with you, you’ll eventually be better than your father ever was. But you’re rather timid, considering the aircraft and powers at your disposal.”

“Timid?” You ask, and she nods.

“Please, don’t misunderstand me. A wyvern isn’t an indestructible, unstoppable monster. But flown aggressively enough, it can appear as such.” She says, then pauses. “I think we will have much work to do, but I believe together there would be nothing that could challenge us.”

You’re not sure what to say to that- while you keep your face carefully neutral, your silence must indicate a hesitation there.

“I am sorry, I overspoke.” She says, after a second. “Let’s change the subject. I’ve probably received a much more comprehensive briefing on you than you have on me. Is there anything you’d like to know about me?”

[] What made you go for the wyvern program? It’s rare for a foreign witch to want to enroll, let alone get plugged.

[x] Why the IJN? Aunt Jessica said that’s usually Katsumi’s side of the family.

“So why the IJN?” You ask, looking over her shoulder at the door as the waiter enters the dining room. It puts the conversation on pause as you order, blinking at Kyou’s order of an 18 ounce rib eye and a 24 ounce porterhouse both medium rare, along with a few sides and a glass of wine. You’ve known witches that eat a lot- Aunt Merlin, for example, can put away more at a buffet than BB can, and he’s a big guy. Still, it’s a hell of a lot of food for one person- if you end up flying with her, you get the sneaking suspicion you’ll have to visit Texas some day, for their steakhouses.

“Aunt Jessica said that’s usually where Katsumi’s side of the family goes.” You finish, after the waiter leaves again.

Kyou nods, then smiles, slightly guiltily. “Top Gun and Interceptor.” She says- two well-known movies. “As a little girl I fell in love with the tomcat. Who wouldn’t, after watching?” She laughs. “I admit it was perhaps foolish to think I could eventually fly a tomcat, but by the time I learned they do not accept witches in the flight program, I had already made up my mind, and I refused to give up flight for a position in the armored corps no matter how hard they pushed me. How can you compare that life to this?” She asks.

You have to agree- you did toy with a life as a commando for some time, with no small amount of encouragement from your mother. Still, there’s something about flight- about being a fighter pilot- that has an irresistible pull, and you didn’t have to fight much resistance when you’d made up your mind.

“And so here I am.” She says. “Of course, I couldn’t have flown the F-14 anyway, and the wyvern was more of a dream posting than the tomcat, but I should have liked to have flown both.” She smiles. “It’s astounding to me how lucky Samantha Wells really is, to have been able to fly in both aircraft.”

She pauses for a minute. “What about you? What made you enter the navy, and the wyvern program?” She asks. “Our sources indicate you felt it was traditional, but surely that’s not the only reason?”

[] There’s lots of reasons- Aunt Merlin among them, yeah. But like you said- how can any other life compare?
[] No, it’s mostly tradition. I think it would have been frowned on if I’d gone anywhere else.

[x] There’s lots of reasons- Aunt Merlin among them, yeah. But like you said- how can any other life compare?

“There’s lots of reasons, I guess.” You say, taking a sip of ice water. “Aunt Merlin was a big part of it, I spent a lot of time with her during summer breaks and you can’t spend any time around her without wanting to be part of it all.”

She smiles and nods- having already said as much to you earlier. It’s funny how that works out, you think. “But I guess it’s really just like you said. How can any other life compare?”

She turns to look out the window- you can just barely make out the afterburner plumes of a pair of jets lifting off from Halsey field a few miles away. Night training flight, you think- while there hasn’t been a standing patrol over the city since the war ended, there’s always night training flights going up. Mostly Tomcats, there’s also a couple squadrons of F-35s at the post, and a handful of Wyverns at any given time. Kyou watches them till long after they’ve faded out of sight for you before turning back. “It is difficult to imagine not flying.” She agrees. “It has caused some friction with the army, sadly, but one of my younger sisters can take my place in the tanks. It maybe isn’t fair to her, but duty is like that, no?” She laughs.

[] I guess- all of my sisters are either active duty or have signed contracts already anyway.
[] Maybe not, but it’s the price we pay.

[x] I guess- all of my sisters are either active duty or have signed contracts already anyway.

You shrug- all of your sisters, save for Natalya, are active duty or have already signed contracts to enter the service as soon as they graduate. You’ve never really ever considered not doing at least a term- especially for witches, it seems like it’s only right and fair. You know there’s some civilian witches out there, ones that have never done time in uniform, but you struggle to understand why.

“I guess,” You admit. “All of my sisters are already active duty or have signed contracts anyway though.”

Kyou nods. “I am told one of your sisters, Cassiopeia, I believe, is going to the Kaga as my counterpart? Something of an honor to be matched by a Bishop.” She says, smiling lightly. “I am sure they’re just as excited to have her as I am to be here- it’s good luck to have a witch related to the imperial family onboard, afterall.”

[x] So you’re excited to be stateside?

“So you’re excited to be stateside?” You ask, looking past her as the door opens again and the waiter brings in two bottles of wine.

She nods emphatically. “Oh yes, very much so. I’ve visited before along with my father on goodwill trips, but this is the first time I’ve been able to come here without being managed every step of the way.” She pauses, then laughs. “Well, almost. I’m still managed, of course, but that will end fairly soon, one way or the other. Even if I am not selected to form the other half of a crew with you, it will be some time before the navy decides where to send me after this, and I will be able to enjoy at least this city some. I’m looking forward to it.”

She takes a sip of wine, looking back out across the bay to the airbase. “Of course, I hope to see and do much more in the United States before I must return home, but that may have to wait a few years, while I serve out my term with the navy.”

[] So you’re not going to go career?

[x] So you’re not going to go career?

“So you’re not planning to go career?” You ask.

She frowns. “Not if I’m not selected for a wyvern.” She says. “The program itself carries an extended commitment to service, of course, and I’m both aware of that and accept it. I welcome it, in fact. Wyvern crews, it was explained to us, always exit service at the same time with no exceptions. But outside of that possibility, no. Are you planning to make a career of the navy?”

You shrug. “Like you said, there’s an extended commitment when you enter the program. I’m in for eighteen years at least, unless I catch a medical.”

She smiles. “And that’s exceedingly unlikely.”

You nod. “Exactly. There’s enough healwitches around that it’s not going to happen anyway. So I’m in until twenty thirty four at the earliest.”

“I’ve always thought that interesting. There’s only two Wyvern crews that have opted to leave when their extended commission had reached it’s end, most opt to continue in service. And both of the crews that left had other concerns- children, in both cases.” She says. “It makes me wonder how much of that is the navy pressuring them to stay in service because of the cost of refitting a wyvern for a new crew, and how much is actual desire.”

[] Dad and aunt Merlin say there wasn’t much pressure for them to stay in when they got out.

[x] Hard to say. I don’t worry about it. I plan to go past the eighteen unless something else happens.

You shrug. “Hard to say. I don’t worry about it.”

She smiles. “They’re going to have to pull you out of the cockpit at the end of your career?”

You nod. “That’s the plan. I’m going to go past the eighteen unless something else happens.”

“I had assumed as much. Our intelligence indicates your father and aunt are both still holding reserve commissions, though it sounds as if Admiral Wells has reactivated hers.” She catches herself in the act of saying something else and shakes her head. “But that is none of my business.”

You take a drink of wine- it’s surprisingly good, though you don’t have a taste for wine good enough to recognize it.

The door opens again and the waiter enters, followed by another staff member, carrying plates of steaming food. You can see Kyou’s eyes widen in anticipation as the two large steaks are placed in front of her- and the uncertain glance she shoots the salad you’d ordered as a side to your own meal. You’d spent a bit more than you’d originally planned on a new york strip, but it looks to be every bit worth the price- and it’s on the government dime, anyway, so you figure to enjoy it while you can. You doubt this kind of thing will happen twice.

“I understand if you think it none of my business, but you had mentioned you enjoyed cooking.” She says, carefully cutting off a bite of one of her steaks. “Do you cook many meals such as this?”

[x] I can, but I like to try other things.

“I can” you say, cutting open your own steak to find it a perfect medium rare. “But I like to try other things.”

“Oh?” She asks- a quick glance up shows that she’s already powered through half of one of hers. “But you do still cook steaks?”

You nod. “I do, yes.” Steaks are, as you said, fairly easy- the biggest two things to get right are cooking them properly and seasoning them before you cook them, and neither of those is really a challenge. You probably cook your spicier than she’s used to- almost every recipe you have calls for red pepper, afterall- but you’re fairly sure if she likes the food here she’d be impressed by your cooking.

“What else do you cook, if you don’t mind my asking?”

You laugh a little at that- what don’t you cook? “Mostly dishes from back home.” You say, after thinking a minute. “Shrimp and crab boils, barbeque, burgers I’ve got a dozen recipes for. Chili, Jambalaya, Gumbo. Anything that catches my eye, really. I’ve got a notebook full of recipes.”

“It seems odd that you would be so talented.” She says, taking a drink of her wine. “I cannot imagine the mother of night cooking, if you’ll forgive my saying so.”

You nod. “She doesn’t, at least not much anymore.” You respond. “She used to when I was much younger, but I learned mostly on my own, and with the help of the husband of another of the bayou matrons.”

“Ah, I see. It is one of my great regrets that I have never learned much beyond simple stir fry.” She says. “Cousin Katsumi is a talented chef as well, did you learn much from her?”

[x] She taught me a few things, yes, but I’m not as good with Japanese cuisine as I’d like.

“She taught me a few things when I visited,” You say, nodding. “But I’m not as good with Japanese cuisine as I’d like.”

Kyou smiles. “Perhaps you’ll have a chance to practice in the future?” She offers.

“Perhaps.” You allow- she’s probably driving at the very real possibility you’ll spend time flying off IJN carrier decks with her as a backseater. The possibility isn’t unique to her, you know- there’s already been some wyverns to operate off the IJN carriers as part of cross-deck training, and the Asuka II class can comfortably operate wyverns as part of it’s air group- arguably better than the Nimitz class can.

“These steaks are excellent.” She proclaims- having already finished one and is already halfway though her second. “Don’t you agree?”

[x] Agreed. They’re very good.

“Yeah, they’re quite good.” You say. “Though I would have gone for a few more spices.”

“So you like spicy food then?” She asks, and you nod.

“Mostly. I can cook tame dishes too, but almost everything has to have some heat, according to maman.” You respond, noting that she’s managed to clean her plate- and is eyeballing the bones on them. Some witches, you know, do take after their familiars quite heavily- Maman, for example, is well noted for enjoying being as lazy as possible when she can, and she’ll happily spend a day napping in the sun. ‘Resting up’ she calls it. You wonder if Kyou does too- though you’ve not seen her familiar directly, you imagine it’s some carnivore- it’s got to be.

She nods. “Chinese cuisine is very popular back home right now, especially the hotter dishes.” She says, setting down her napkin. “Of course, the princess consort seems to always introduce food from a new region of the world every other week.” She laughs. “It almost makes me wonder what she’ll have found for the kitchens to try their hand at when I return.”

“There’s no telling with Jessica.” You say- she moves about a mile a minute, it seems like- a constant, energetic presence in any room. You can’t imagine living with her the way Katsumi does, but it’s not your problem anyway.

“She’s very popular in the academy.” Kyou says. “Everyone’s big sister in a way.” She smiles at some memory, pausing. “If not for her, I may not have had an acceptable grade in some of my academic courses. She arranged a tutor for me. It’s amazing how she manages to be in so many places at once.”

“It’s all the coffee.” You say- the stuff she drinks puts even your sweet coffee to shame, a viscous, light-absorbing alloy of coffee and sugar with a consistency somewhere near that of glue. You tried it once and felt like your heart was going to either explode or ascend to the next quantum state of energy- it took years for you to drink coffee again.

1/2
>>
Kyou laughs. “Cousin Katsumi says the same. She claims she’s ordered her guards to keep the princess consort away from any coffee machine, but she always seems to be able to make the stuff. It drives them crazy.”

You chuckle. “Jess probably thinks it’s a game.”

Kyou nods. “Oh, you’re exactly right, I’m sure. She certainly treats it as such. I would offer to help them, but it would be an insult for me to do so, so instead I merely live with the smell of her coffee machines in their hidden places.”

She sighs, looking over at the wall clock. “It looks as if our time is at an end, I’m afraid.” She says, causing you to look at your watch- it’s almost twenty-one hundred. You blink- you can’t figure where the time went. Still, you stand up and offer her a hand, which she takes gracefully as she stands.

“I will be spending the night aboard the Kaga.” she says, as you exit the dining room and her bodyguard falls in behind you- he must have been there the entire time. She seems to ignore his presence after a very slight nod of greeting. “Normally I would insist on having the same treatment as any other witch in the program, but the captain and ship’s matron would be insulted if I did not avail myself of the imperial cabins.” She sighs. “The troubles of one’s station.” She says, in a tone that’s half self-mockery and half resignation.

“If you do not mind, I should like to observe your flight tomorrow.” She says as you step outside, having been waved past the door by the host- your meal already taken care of by the consulate here, which was nice of them. “I know that that is normally permitted without asking the pilot involved, but I feel it would be rude of me to not.”

[x] I don’t mind if you do.

“I don’t mind if you do.” You say- it would be rude to say no, especially considering she didn’t have to ask your permission at all.

She smiles again, pausing at the open door of her vehicle. “Thank you.” She says, nodding. “I hope to see you again.” She bows, and you return the motion as she steps in the SUV and her bodyguard closes the door behind her. He climbs in the passenger seat, nodding once at you as he does so, and they drive off.

Your own vehicle isn’t far behind them, and you climb in with far less ceremony, finally loosening your tie. The ride back to the BOQ is shorter than the drive out, with the sailor at the duty desk barely looking up as you walk in front doors and sweep your cover off your head, tucking it under an arm. Upstairs, your suite is comfortably quiet and empty, exactly as it was this morning. You take a few minutes to change, carefully hanging your coat and trousers in the closet and setting the dress shoes underneath them before changing into a comfortable- if worn- pair of bluejeans and a T-shirt.

You briefly consider going to see your aunt- you had told her you’d talk after dinner, but it’s already getting a bit late, and you’re not sure if you want to call on her this late with a flight tomorrow- and part of you wonders if it’s worth the effort anyway. Like your mother said- she’s a grown woman, and will make the decisions she deems best, regardless. Of course, she’s going to take your opinion into consideration, like she always has, but if her mind is made up, at best all you’re going to do is get profuse apologies.

You could just shoot her a phone call and rack out early- even just a text would do, you know. At the same time, you do kind of want to talk to her, since you enjoy her company- you can trust her.

[] Just shoot her a text message- she’ll understand and if she wants to talk she’ll let you know.
[] Put some shoes on and head over anyway- you did say you wanted to talk after dinner.

[x] Put some shoes on and head over anyway- you did say you wanted to talk after dinner.

You sigh after a second. You did say you wanted to talk and this is as good a chance as any, you figure. Worst case, you’ve done more with less sleep- one of your early qualification rides in the T-45, before you’d even qualified for the Wyvern program, you’d had a scant three hours before you’d had to make the flight- and you passed with the second-best marks in your group.

You pull some shoes on and grab your keys, heading back out to your car. The drive across the post is quick. This late on a work night, traffic has already largely cleared up, and the lights on at the chance house indicate your aunt is there, surprisingly. You’d figured there were better than even odds she’d still be on the pad, working on the jet.

She answers the door a few seconds after you knock, and you can smell, quite clearly, the re-heated leftovers, even from the entryway.

“C-come in, Morgan.” She says, nodding as you walk past and head for the living room, where a bowl of the chili sits next to an open can of monster on the table next to the couch. “I-I just got home. How w-was dinner?”

[x] Very good. The Japanese paid, it’s hard to complain about free food.

You take a seat on one of the two chairs near sofa as she locks the door and comes back in, picking up the bowl of chili. “Very good. The Japanese ended up paying, and it’s hard to complain about free food.”

She nods. “And K-kyou?”

“Good company.” You say with a nod. “Not too hard to talk to, closemouthed on a couple subjects. Hinted at what we’d talked about.”

“I t-thought she might.” Your aunt responds. “H-her files indicate s-she’s been incredibly single m-minded about t-this. I’m k-kind of surprised she d-didn’t try to get you to call t-the selection now in her f-favor.”

You blink- Kyou did mention that once or twice over the course of the day, but also indicated she wouldn’t accept it if you did. “She did, but said she wouldn’t accept the posting if I did it that way.” You say.

“Ah. I w-wondered. K-kimiko-san wasn’t able to pull up a-anything on her, either.” She says, frowning. “H-her intake records a-are sealed. It’s not u-unusual, especially n-not for an imperial family member, but it i-is odd for a liaison w-witch.”

You nod, unsurprised- you’re getting Natalya vibes from the imperial princess yourself. “You think she’s like Natalya then?” You ask.

Merlin shakes her head. “I-I’m not sure. If she was, a-and she knew she was, t-that would be difficult f-for them to explain a-away.” She says. “E-engineering witches like that w-was outlawed shortly after the UN l-learned about Natalya. B-but if she is t-there’s not much they can do, a-and it’s j-just as likely she’s just a v-very strong expression of the imperial b-bloodline.”

“So for now, it’s not worth worrying about?” You ask, and she shakes her head, agreeing with you.

“I d-don’t think it is.” She says. “A-at worst she is a-and the state department a-and the UN envoy can h-handle it. At best s-she’s not and that’s t-the end of it. E-either way I’d w-work with her.”

[x] How do you think a witch that strong would affect the jet?

“How do you think a witch that strong would affect the jet?”

She looks... hungry, for lack of a better term, at the prospect. “I-I don’t know, but I’m eager to f-find out.” She says, after a minute, a smile on her lips. “If I could I w-would have gotten Natalya t-to fly with you, but that was n-never going to happen. They’re both s-stronger than I am, t-think.”

“So it’s not dangerous? She’s not going to cause us to fly the jet apart or anything, right?”

She shakes her head. “N-no, I don’t think s-so. If there’s a-any danger, it would be t-to the witch i-integration suite, w-we may have to install much stronger focii. But structurally there’s s-should be no problem a-and I’m almost positive the e-engines can take it, even with W-WEP.”

“But you’re not entirely sure.”

She shakes her head. “N-no. There is a d-degree of uncertainty, b-but it would p-provide an amazing t-test and development o-opportunity I wouldn’t h-have otherwise.”

“Is that why you’re coming back to the navy?” You ask. “Because I haven’t made selection yet.”

She shakes her head, looking away from you. “N-no.” She says, after a moment. “I-” she pauses. “I-I’m sorry. I s-should have asked you b-before, but...” She trails off.

You sigh. “It’s fine auntie. So are you getting replugged, too?”

She nods. “A-after you make selection.” She says.

“What’s your family think?” You ask. “Big change for them.”

That causes her to laugh. “N-no it won’t be.” She says. “I a-already spend weeks in my room a-at the office, being at s-sea wouldn’t be any different. I won’t be m-making nearly as much, b-but we’ve got so much already a-anyway it doesn’t matter. Frank already k-knows, he called r-right before you got here.”

“And what did he say?”

1/2
>>
“H-he supported it. H-he does that with a-anything I do.” She says. “H-he’s going to head b-back home a-after your flight tomorrow. T-the company is going t-to work something o-out with the navy for test flights, a-and we’ll have our jet b-based at C-china lake or H-halsey field.”

You nod. “Well, if that’s what you’ve decided.”

“I-it is.” She says, though she still can’t quite look at you. “S-sorry. I-I’ll make it up to you later.”

You nod- you don’t really think she owes you anything, but that’s how she’s always been. “It be fine, auntie.” You say. She fidgets some when you yawn, then stand up. “I be headed back to my quarters, I think.”

She nods. “S-sorry.” She says again, quietly.

You sigh. “Auntie, ya don’t needta apologize to me, no. I prove it to ya later.”

“L-later?” She asks, blinking. “W-what are y-you going t-to do?”

You grin, thinking of that cake recipe. “You see later, oui.”

She blushes furiously. “L-later?”

“I be goin, auntie.” You say, still grinning. “You be with de jet tomorrow?”

She nods. “M-maybe.” She says. “H-how are y-you g-going to prove it? M-morgan?”

“See ya tomorrow auntie.” You say, walking across the room to the entryway, stepping out of the door with your aunt still stuttering on the couch, closing it behind you and locking it after a brief struggle finding the key. You won’t have time to make the cake for a day or two, but it ought to be an excellent gift for her after she gets out of surgery, you think, smiling.

Hopefully it’s up to her standard.

Just saying, but Merlin should design a EW version of the Wyvern and give it four seats like the Prowler. Then, we can have us piloting, Merlin providing the technowitchery, Kyou proving the power and SEADbitch to fuck with SAMs. It’s b3 the ultimate Wild Weasel
>>
Ghost, at this rate Anon will lewd Merlin and I'll be there adding a +1 for it.
>>
>>3412382
The downside would be a larger jet and corresponding loss of maneuverability but with Kyou basically serving as a turbo that’s actually not a bad idea.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, it looks absurd on its face but think about it a minute—lengthen and widen the cockpit enough to have two witches tandem plus a third behind them closer to the engines (Kyou) and that might actually work. Merlin runs the plane (flight engineer) but doesn’t have to provide raw power like the old days, that’s Kyou’s job, SEAD to spoof the radars and provides stealth, hell we might even bring in candidate witch number three and do a double-tandem if she adds something to the party. It’s not like they weigh that much. We’d basically be a flying fortress.

Now having four people mind-linked together is an entirely different problem (one that Merlin would quickly be able to tell us is solvable or not), but I actually think this is worth giving some thought from a strategic prospective.

Whether the shipping regulators can tolerate the thought is another thing ...

Given what the US blows on black projects that come to nothing every year ... I’d be surprised if they blinked at it. The whole thing would be classified anyway so it’d just show up in a pool of other black projects—not even a line item in the budget...so financially it’s actually pretty doable, especially if Merlin does the design work and mods using her abilities so they don’t have to spend years (and gazillions of dollars) redesigning the thing.

This feels like a terrible idea, but I really like it.
>>
>>3412704
I felt exactly the same way when I proposed it. Terrible idea on its face, but man it would be cool.
>>
>>3412382
Merlin has already said she doesn't want to fly combat anymore.

>>3412462
While it sounds like it would be one hell of a interdictor/strike fighter, I don't think putting that many witches in one aircraft is all that practical.

Counterpoint, the Whiskey Bones are a thing
>>
>>3412906
Pretty sure they only have one witch in them unless I missed something.
>>
>>3412925
Maybe it’s just me, but I got the feeling that it was a handful of Witches.
>>
>>3412962
I could see them maybe having two but even then I imagine the only things a Whiskey Witch needs to focus on are the EML and shields which should be doable by a single witch.
>>
>>3413052

They have two witches crew- one per gun. It's a five man crew- two witches, DSO, Pilot and Mission/aircraft commander in the copilot seat. Witches also serve as the OSOs of the aircraft.
>>
>>3413087
Also a much bigger airplane, but it’s still worth further though and discussion I think.
>>
>>3413087
Completely missed that they each had two guns, though thinking about it them having two makes a lot more sense compared to them just having one.
>>
>>3413137

I mean, if you guys want to bring it up with Merlin...
>>
>>3413137
That's a full flight of Witches, which themselves are worth several flights of conventional steelwings. Would the years of R&D and horrendous production costs to custom build a single completely unique airframe be worth building a massive "fighter" that couldn't turn if it's life depended on it?
>>
>>3414378
I’m for asking. If we find out she doesn’t want to and/or it’ll cost billion and take a decade then that’s an easy answer. But if it’s doable time and money-wise and she doesn’t mind being are airborne engineer then we ought to think about it.
>>
>>3414442
I understand your point but if its a relatively simple mod (which it could be if the airframe was designed to be modular) and we have Merlin aboard to enhance our maneuverability, it could be well worth the cost.

Bottom line: I’m in favor of putting the question to Merlin. I expect to hear that it won’t be doable, but I’d still ask the question just in case.

>if its a relatively simple mod (which it could be if the airframe was designed to be modular)
Are you an aerospace engineer? Obviously not, because you'd have already assumed that there isn't any available space on this billion dollar air superiority fighter to make the modifications you want. Increasing the size of the cockpit and adding another towards the back will add weight and cut down on fuel tank size. Increasing the overall size to accommodate will make it carrier incapable. And then the Navy won't want it.

Also, the modularity is for the weapons, not the guts of the plane.
>>
>>3414646
Modularity has to be intentionally designed to facilitate a certain kind of modularity. I don't think Wyverns are designed to be particular modular, and even if they are, they certainly aren't in cockpit and magic systems. You'd have to break all the various system out into separate subsystems, then wire those subsystems back into the proper seat. That would be a pain to do from scratch, but doable with enough time and effort and money. But retrofitting an existing plane for that? That'd be like trying to retrofit an Iowa with a nuclear reactor; so expensive you might as well just build a new ship.

Long story short, no, "modularity" doesn't mean you can swap out massive integral part of the plane unless it was designed for that in particular.

On that note, whatever happened to the Moonbat?
>>
>>3414821

What, the design, or the specific ones you guys had in Poland?
>>
>>3414837
The Poland one
>>
>>3415198

Both airframes were purchased from the Polish government postwar by Styles Air Racing. One of them, heavily modified, is their twin-engine unlimted racer, while the other functions largely as their 'demonstrator' aircraft, allowing them to take reporters or VIPs up for a lap around the track.

Oh fuck off. I'm all aboard the Kyoutrain at this point and even I'll say that Danielle's a total cutie.
Attacking other waifus just creates a perception of you as a raging dickhole and inspires people to spite you.

Considering we made Danielle Dinner and we took Kyou out should we take Lotus to Santa's?
>>
>>3416341
I'd be okay with this.

Though I would push for cooking the night before selection, we should totally invite them all for jobs well done and because we promised to cook for Maman so it'll be hilarious watching them all sweat it out at her presence

I mean, we are getting plane-married at the end of this, maman should get to meet the prospects.

The matrons care not from whence the babies flow, so long as they flow.
