No one dared get in Kurtis's way as he made his way out of the forested beach-side. Judging by their faces, you could tell it was more out of stunned silence rather than fear. Allie would follow behind him, no doubt to speak her mind further about what he had suggested doing. As for the others, they were still in shock of what had almost happened.

"Why did he do that...?" Yukino asked, breaking the silence, "Kurtis is always so friendly and yet...he was going to-"

"About time someone did that" Silvia interrupted, looking at the spot where Chris had just been, "even if he wasn't gonna shoot Chris, that guy needs to learn that you shouldn't go around threatening people like that. It's only fair he's on the receiving end for once."

"What are you saying...?" Tanjeet asks, moving towards the twins, "so it's alright to threaten his life because he did it first? Silvia's that's not-"

"He was going to kill me," Claire interrupted him, stomping her foot on the ground, "with that same gun you have in your hands! No Tanjeet, he had that coming for a while now."

"Don't forget the reason he did that to begin with" you interject, earning a look of concern from Claire, "because you went behind my back and stole a kill, preventing me from getting Erick back."

"And that makes it's alright for him to threaten my sister?" Silvia questions, shooting daggers at you.

You shoot those daggers right back, and explain, "I never said it did, but it doesn't mean you're anymore justified in wishing him dead as well. We're all supposed to be a team here, and it's because of shit like this that we're even having these sessions to begin with."

Claire gulps a little, and Silvia looks down for a second before returning her gaze back to you. You give out a sigh, before turning around towards the plaza. There's no point in reprimanding these two further, as you know that Kurtis's little stunt created another small rift within your group.

"Personally", you announce, walking towards the plaza, "I can deal with Chris's unpredictability well enough. It's Kurtis I'm getting more worried about."

If they had replies, you walked too fast to hear them beyond the trees. Though, you could hear soft steps following right behind you as you entered the Roosevelt Plaza grounds. Yukino stood right next to you as spotted Kurtis and Allie, picking up any trash or leftovers from the training exercise near the benches and throwing them away. It wasn't long before they spotted you, yet neither of them said.

"What are you going to do?" Yukino asked in a worried tone, "I hope he's not angry at you or me for what happened..."

"I don't know" you reply honestly, "but I doubt he's too mad at you. Even with that mean right hook you gave him."

Yukino giggles a little at the compliment, but regardless keeps that look of concern on her face. In reference to her question, you were planning on...

We know it looked bad but we were having a break through with him, he is just a kid after all and Dante needs him alive and stable, we understand why he jumped Cris since he was pointing a gun at us but after that they should have stopped

I understand wanting to kill him from Cris point of view, he thretened Silvia/Claire, thretened Paula and Dante and before that he probably heard about the rape attempt to Carol. The last guy that tgretened teammembers and we let walk cost us Maria's life, so I understand very well wanting to get rid of Cris before he snaps, the next could be him or Allie for all he knows.

"Head back home with Tanjeet and the others", you command, earning a look of worry from her, "I'll be fine, so don't worry about what happened back there. I just need to ask him some questions is all."

Yukino kept that worried look in spite of your words, but nonetheless replied, "Alright, stay safe Paula..."

"Hey I'm supposed to tell you that", you reply with a smile, causing her to smile slightly, "anyways, go now."

Yukino nodded in acknowledgment and headed back over the treeline. As her footsteps disappeared from your earshot, you made your way towards Kurtis and Allie. They had finished picking up the trash in the time you had your conversation with Yukino, which drove their full attention towards you. Allie's expression was similar to Yukino's worried look, but Kurtis's eyed you with an almost wary gaze.

"Hey, sorry to keep you guys" you called out, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible, "but Kurtis I need to have a word with you. Right now, so we can all head home and get some sleep."

The serious, wary look on Kurtis didn't falter for a second, before he said, "Understood, I'll try to be brief. Allie, wait for me by the car once you're done with this, alright?"

She nodded in response, with that worried expression not fading from her face. You gave her a nod yourself, to try to ease her along but it didn't seem to help as she just packed up the dufflebag. Kurtis gave you a signal to follow behind him, towards the back end of the plaza behind the Roosevelt statue. It almost seemed like a teenager's hiding spot, yet it was far away enough that no one could hear.

Finding a spot near the statue to lean on, Kurtis slumps against the marble wall and spoke up, "I don't like the kid, Paula, and I'm not just saying that because his attitude pisses me off. Given what he's done already, even in just the last mission, he's a dangerous liability."

"Trust me, I know" you reply, earning a raised eyebrow from him, "hell, even Erick knew that well enough. But recently, I've worked with him and seen that there's more to why he does this."

"Really now?" Kurtis responds incredulously, "and what could possibly explain why he's a bloodthirsty, insubordinate ,rapist psychopath? Don't think Carol kept quiet about what he did before I came here."

You mentally cursed their knowledge of telling him about Chris's assault against Carol in the first hunt, but simply replied, "He's a dumb kid, simple as that. A dumb kid that lost people close to him, and was starting to see that there's more to this game than just an outlet for his grief in violence."

"He's grieving?" Kurtis questions, and you reply with a nod, "He's acting like a psycho out of grief? And you really trust someone like him to change?"

"Kurtis, you-"

"Remember the last time we gave someone like that a chance?" Kurtis interrupts, not waiting for your answer, "someone who didn't want to cooperate? Someone died because of that, or did you already forget?"

We broke the guy's every limb and his girlfriend's head exploded, yeah I remember what happened with that fucker and there is not a moment I wish we had done things differently in that entire hunt.
That's what I'm trying to do here, he is a kid, and he lost his only connection with sanity in the same game we are playing, I'm trying to bring it back because like it or not, he is one of us, and Dante, who is a reliable and a friend, needs him too.
Look, I know how it looked, and I thank you for looking out for me, I would have done the same for you if I thought you were in danger, but please, let me and Dante try and bring him back.

"We broke the guy's every legs" you reply back, matching his disappointed look with a serious gaze of your own, "and his girlfriend's head exploded beforehand. Yeah, I remember what happened with that fucker and there's not a moment I wish we had done things differently in that hunt."

Kurtis opens his mouth to speak, but you stomp your foot fiercely down to silence him. He relents for now, but his expression changes serious to match your own as you continue your speech.

"That's what I'm trying to do here, he's a kid who's lost his only connection with sanity in this game. I'm trying to bring him back because, like it or not, he's one of us and Dante, who's reliable as they come, believes in him too."

"Sure didn't look like a lot of believing going down where I found you all" Kurtis interjects, folding his arms, "considering he was pointing that weapon at you. If anything, it looked like a hostage situation to me."

"Look, I know how it looked" you correct, softening your expression a little, "and I do thank you for looking out for me, as I would have done the same for you. But please, let me and Dante try to bring him back, if only to keep him distracted and out of the group's way."

Kurtis kept giving you that incredulous look, like someone who was being asked to believe that the sky was green. After a few moments, he let out a sigh and dropped his arms slightly but that look of disbelief was still on him. He turned his back to you and looked towards the plaza before answering back.

"Once Erick comes back, I'll ask for his judgement on this. I'll honor your word for now because of what happened, but don't think I won't hesitate again to end him if he pulls something like that again."

"Why are you being like this Kurtis?" you ask, stunned at his decision.

"It's my duty to protect the lives of others" he quickly replies, and then turns his head to you, "I thought an officer of the law would have seen it as well. I hope for our sakes he's not as lost as you say."

You wanted to speak up and retort, but you knew that Kurtis's mind was set. For someone as kind and open minded as he could be, he was unusually stubborn when his mind was made up. It only increased your worry though, as now you'd have to be on the lookout for both Chris and Kurtis during another one of the meetings. At the moment, you knew it was the right thing to do, but understood that it might not be the safest or smartest course to take.

<May 3rd, Thursday 10:50 PM>

Tanjeet, the twins and Yukino had left the moment your returned to the plaza, but Kurtis and Allie agreed to take you back home. It made for another eerily silent drive back home, with only Allie ever speaking up to tell you a bit more about that drone project of hers. It wasn't anything you didn't already know, but it broke the deathly silence regardless. They dropped you off home without a word, and barely a goodbye before Kurtis departed with Allie soon afterwards.

Guys, Bowery's preposition is to crack down on the vandalism spree, vandalism that we and the other GANTZ teams are directly responsible.
Supporting his preposition puts all Gantz teams in danger.
And convincing father to accept may put him in a VERY big risk since he opperates in NY and we know the NY team is very powerful and very protetive, they can and probably will hurt our father if it mean protecting their opperation.

Please, think about this before discussing it with that, all that I've writen here is infor.ation Paula HAS so she can decide if putting her dad at odds with GANTZ NY or Bowery is preferable.

We need to reject his proposal, he's trying to pin us down by slimy threats, which I don't like and the NY gantz team is more valuable than anything else.

After heading inside and dropping off your gear in your closet, you headed back to the living room. There wasn't a difference between calling him here or your bedroom, but you personally didn't trust going in there for a private conversation anymore after that alien found its way inside. Pulling out your phone and reclining on the sofa, you dialed up your father's number to see Bowery's little proposition through.

'Not that I'm going to convince him further' you think, hearing the dial tone come over your phone, 'his mind is already made up and I'm not pressuring him further on Bowery's schemes. Hell...I want out of this whole scheming myself...'

After a few dial tones and a dropped call, you overhear the sound of an older latin gentleman on the line, "Paula, buenas noches...but why are you calling at this late hour? Not that I mind saying hello, but I could be at work you know."

"Sorry dad, but I need to tell you something important", you reply, trying to sound serious with your tone, "it's about Senator Bowery, the one with that security deal I told you about the other day. He wants to update his proposal to you."

You hear an audible grumble, or really throaty sigh, from the other line before your father speaks up, "Fine, I'll hear what he's got on the table. But know that whatever that man is offering, I already told him that I'm not interested."

"I know, so I'll keep it brief" you respond, taking in a breather before explaining, "Senator Bowery wants to offer you an exclusive government contract for your company, he didn't specify what it was but it's probably a marketing thing since you head up advertising in the company. Either way, he wants your support for his security campaign in the senate in exchange for that."

There was a long pause on the other line, with the only sounds made were your own breathing over the line. You then heard another one of your father's sighs, a bit of rustling on his side of the telephone line.

"Give me his phone number, or whatever line he's contacting you from" your dad spoke up, matching your own serious tone, "if he's this intent on trying to convince me, then I think it's only fair that I give him a piece of my mind."

You almost chuckled at the turn of events, and quickly complied with your father's request. You knew there were only a few times your dad got his hands dirty and that was usually to protect his family or to castrate someone himself. Whether he had seen Bowery's advances as a threat or not, it was certainly going to make for a conversation the good senator wouldn't forget.

"I'll call you back as soon as I'm done talking 'politica' ", he stated, sounding a little excited, "and I hope this is the last I hear of this senator after tonight. Call me if you want to talk mija, it gets lonely up here you know."

"Of course dad, buenas noches", you reply, and he replies in kind before cutting off the line.

With what you knew about Bowery, it was mostly assured that he'd throw another fit once he got the bad news, at least going by your assumption of Chris and Dante's accounts of it. What worried you however, would be who it would be inevitably directed towards. Both of them mentioned how irritable Bowery had gotten from his prior rejection, and you could only imagine how he'd be at the second.

You narrowed your eyes and keyed in Dante's phone number as worry began to surface. You needed to warn them of what was coming and to check up on Chris's state after what happened on the beach. Judging with how he reacted, it was a higher priority right now. After several seconds of tones, the line came up to Dante's hazy voice.

"Yo, I was falling asleep you know. What do you need Paula?"

"Sorry but I need you to listen carefully Dante" you reply, trying to sound dead serious, "your dad is going to get some bad news on a rejected deal tomorrow morning. I suggest getting out of the house or hanging low with Chris if you don't want a worse repeat of today."

"Ok..." Dante acknowledges, somewhat groggily, "I'm going to guess it's related to that tantrum earlier today. Thanks for the heads up Paula."

"No problem", you respond, and switch to a more apologetic tone, "and how's Chris? Is he alright after what happened in Roosevelt?"

You hear an audible sigh from Dante, no doubt of worry, before he says, "Not well, he was screaming and fighting me all the way to the car and I had to knock him out to take him home. It was the only thing I could think of, but at least he's safe for now."

"Kept screaming about how he wanted Kurtis dead, how you had set him up and why he was better off without the team. I'd let you talk to him but he's out cold right now."

'Great, it's as bad as I imagined...'

"Alright" you reply, trying to sound understanding, "we'll talk about it more tomorrow I suppose. Have a good evening, both of you, ok?"

He returned your farewell, and switched off the call. You did the same, pocketing your phone and heading for your bedroom. This whole situation was holding your team's cohesion hostage and it made sleeping a little more difficult because of it.

<May 4rd, Friday 9:00 AM>

You had a slight headache upon waking up, which you tried to shake off with a cold shower. You knew why it was there, as images of Chris's reaction and subsequent rampage echoed in your mind as you ate some breakfast. You didn't even really taste it, so much as just ate it, as the worry continued in your head. As you got up to wash your plates, a text vibrated through your phone, on part of Kurtis.

<Hey Paula, Allie says she's more or less finished with the drone. I'm helping her out with the remaining components, but she'll send you a video feed of it when we test it out. Physically of course, since using the phones is too risky as is.>

'Makes me wonder why you even trust it to begin with', you think.

You switched off of Kurtis's text and moved to cleaning up the morning's dishes. Not that you had much work, since it was just one but it always felt slightly longer than cleaning multiples. You felt a bit of that headache come back as you thought on it, but you shook it off to think on the prior evening and what you had told Dante.

Since your father hadn't called you back, it was probably a safe idea to assume that they were both still safe from Bowery's tantrum. What's more, Dante probably left the house with Chris by now and were heading out somewhere. Yet, this still left you with those lingering thoughts about what Chris might do in his state. Dante could probably calm him down, but you had no idea if this would extend to just Dante or the entire team.

Finishing the dishes, you quickly opened up your phone and dialed Dante's number. Much like last night, he responded after a few tones.

"Morning Paula. Listen, we still haven't left since Chris woke up late and he's just finishing breakfast, did you need something?"

"Morning Dante", you reply, breathing in a little, "and I just wanted to ask if you guys minding me coming along wherever you might be going. I don't know how long you'll still have before he gets the bad news though."

There was a pause, along with some shuffling in the background, before Dante spoke up again, "I don't mind it at all, it's just Chris who might mind is all. I can still pick you up, but he might get hostile."

"I figured so, but I'd still like to come along" you respond, and moving towards your bedroom, "I'll take my suit in case anything does happen. Though, he cant really do much of anything if his own thing is disabled, right?"

"Yeah, no actually" Dante replies, and you hear shuffling again, "alright, I'll drop by in 30 minutes. I'd suggest keeping a low profile with it though, otherwise he'll feel even more threatened."

"Gotcha, see you then Dante", you finalize, before turning off the call. Even with the suit on though, you knew that Chris's mind was going to be difficult to deal with regardless.

<May 4rd, Friday 9:30 AM>

You kept eyeing your phone in the time you waited for Dante, either waiting for another text from Kurtis or for your dad to call back from his negotiation with Bowery. Before too long though, you heard a horn blare outside and went to meet Dante and Chris. Both were in the front, but it seemed Chris wasn't speaking even after you got in.

"Hey, good morning Dante, Chris", you greeted and Dante returned it back to you. Chris didn't reply anything, and instead fixed his gaze on the rear-view mirror. Dante, no doubt noticing this, set the car to drive and moved out of your street to put his attention elsewhere.

"Chris, where do you want to go?" Dante asked, but got no answer, "Come on man, don't be that way. You wanted out of there too, so tell me where you want to go today?"

Chris didn't answer, but kept eyeing you on the rear-view mirror.

There was no need to be intimidated. Chris was no more a threat than any other person on the street without his suit. In his current silence, there was no reason to believe he wasn't brooding about what had happened. You didn't take your eyes off of him though, returning his gaze back with your fierce intent.

"Chris" you started, not shifting your eyes, "Where do you want to go today? It's your choice right now."

There was no movement in the car, except the occasional bump on the road, as Chris kept his gaze fixed on you. Dante himself seemed to be focusing more on the road, but he could easily tell something was wrong. Chris's own gaze furrowed, as if trying to inspect your face for any signs of weakness. Yet, after what seemed like a full minute, Chris turned away and settled his head on his arms next to the co-pilot window.

"The zoo" Chris states, almost dismissively, as he just stares to the passing streets on the window. You catch a glimpse of surprise on Dante's eyes, before he returns to his stoic appearance back on the steering wheel.

"Alright, the zoo it is" he replies, turning the wheel to another lane, "I'll keep an eye out for anything good to eat on the way there. Anything in mind, Paula?"

"No, anything you get is fine with me" you answer, nodding your head, "but...any reason why you picked the zoo? It- "

A sudden vibration on your hoodie's pocket catches your attention and go to pick up your phone. Slightly cursing the bad timing, you look to see your father's name on the screen.

"Paula, I just got off the phone with Senator Bowery" your father says over the sounds of traffic, "don't worry about him anymore, he's not going to be making anymore trouble for you. He tried really hard to convince me you know."

"Oh, thank you dad", you reply, looking around to see if anything with Chris had changed. It didn't seem like he was listening in, in spite of the volume on the speaker.

"No problem," he speaks up, and more traffic overcomes his voice, "I would have sent him to an associate, but I don't want to be involved in this anyways. Have a wonderful day, mija!"

He cut off the phone right after that, and saw the Chris and Dante were still in silence. You decided against saying anything else until you arrived at the zoo. Though, this was more because it'd be better to speak to Chris without Dante close by.

<May 4rd, Friday 10:10 AM>

Dante dropped Chris and you off at the entrance, no doubt to find a parking space and to let you speak up. It seemed that Dante was keen on how you and Chris had formed your rather tenuous friendship, for what that was worth. Yet, as you walked past the entrance with Chris, he was still remaining silent as he walked. You followed by his side, but he simply ignored you. In fact, it seemed like he ignored everything as he just seemed to walk forward into the zoo.

Throughout all of this, he retained that same look you spotted on him at the beach. A look of pain, yet cold apathy.

I'm on the exact opposite actually, het slice of life was way more interesting than Erick's, we investigated Yukino's murder and tryed to fix Cris. I like her more explosive and assertive nature compared to Erick's

His walking pace remained the same as he kept moving forward, but you couldn't tell if he was even acknowledging your presence. You had already passed the visitor center by now, and were approaching a few exhibits. In spite of your close proximity and the approaching exhibits, Chris just kept moving forward.

'We'll be at the other end of the zoo at his current pace' you estimate, keeping an sharp eye on him, 'but why is he even doing this? Sure, he's ignoring me but he's not even looking around...'

Whether it was the apparent silence or concern, you decide to speak up, "Where are we going, Chris? Aren't we gonna look at the animals or do you have a specific place in mind you want to go?"

He didn't answer, instead just kept walking forward. This was beginning to annoy you, more-so now because Dante most likely accommodated for Chris's plans today. Even if this wasn't the case, Chris's ungrateful behavior wasn't something you had seen him do yet. He'd been childish and psychopathic in the past, but this was different, like he was being carefully dishonest about something. After you passed the Cheetah's exhibit, you couldn't really take it anymore.

"Chris, seriously, where are we going? Don't tell you made Dante drive all the way out here just so you could have a walk."

Still no response, which only made this whole thing more frustrating.

"If this is about what Kurtis did yesterday, know that I had nothing to do with that. I would never do that to someone that was surrendering."

Chris didn't reply, but you were through with giving him chances now.

"You know, we've put with a lot of shit from you", you start, lowering your voice enough so you don't cause a scene, "so I don't think it's unreasonable to ask that you put with some shit from Kurtis. Yeah, he jumped the gun but I've already reprimanded him for it, what more do you want?"

He stopped dead in his tracks at this, and you did so as well. Thankfully, he'd been smart enough to stop near the side of the walkway and avoided much of the foot traffic. He turned his head to you and saw that his expression had changed to a frustrated scowl. You were honestly expecting the worst but Chris was surprisingly calm in his response.

"I don't know, and...I don't really know if I care. I know you're not about setting people up like that though."

"Then what's wrong then?" you ask as sympathetically as you can, "You've been giving us the cold shoulder the whole trip. What's the point here Chris?"

Chris looked down for a second before raising his head up to speak, "I...goddammit, I don't know. It's like there's a buzzing in my head and I don't know what to think."

"It's not related to Gantz right?" you inquire, somewhat worriedly.

"No, this is more like...static or garbled noise" he replies, before sitting down on a bench, "it's been like that since I woke up. Everything from wanting to kill Kurtis to apologizing has sprung up in my head and...I don't know to deal with it."

>>

>Wait, so there's an actual buzzing that you can hear? It's not figurative? Could you describe anything more about it? Did you have any unusual dreams? Did either of you notice anything weird during the night or was anything out of place at your house when you woke up?

Call me paranoid, but I think aliens might be fucking with Chris through his gantz implant or with some other method. They could have snuck in last night while he was knocked out to do it.
Or, hell, maybe Dante knocking him out damaged something?

guys, the kid is just confused and slightly insane, he is not being mind fucked, we woke up with pretty bad headache this morning ourselves, calm dowm
>>
>>3388337
You don't know that for sure, man.
They literally planted alien tech on our suit like a day ago, I think it'd pay to at least question it further just in case it DOES end up being a foreign influence.
>>
>>3388346
what I think is that he was speaking figuratively, we can ask if he can actually hear a noise but we can stop at that if the answer is no, and even if the answer is yes, the kid was knocked out, that's not good for your health, and specially not good for your head.
>>
>>3388355
It could have been figurative, I guess. But then why describe it as static/garbled noise? That's a little too specific to just be figurative, in my opinion. But then again, those aliens have me paranoid.
Still think it's worth asking further about if he says yes, he is in fact hearing a noise.
>>
>>3388361
when he said static or garbled noise I was interpreting it as that he can barely understand his own thoughs, he mentioned that everything from apologizing to killing Kurtis passed through his head, that's what I understood when he said that. that everything is confused, and it makes sense that everything is confused, we were destroying everything he believed was right about the game and trying to give him something to fight for in the face of that girl that died in the game, and then Kurtis happened and everything got scrambled in his head because he didn't have enough time to actually accept something or reach a conclusion.

I understand the paranoia, I really do, I just don't want him to think that WE think he is crazy, I'm planning to hear him out, and maybe later after we calm him down or help him reach a conclusion we can investigate alien mind fuckery
>>
>>3388366
what I think it is is that he is strugling between the kill-happy Cris that shoots everything to try and make his pain stop and fill a bottomless pit and the Cris we discovered that lives under it that actually cares about somethings
>>
Better to ask with some reassurance.

Erick is Psychic.... Chris could be too.... Aliens could be also....

Besides..... Occams razor and all that. Investigate all the options and then deal with what cannot be explained so easily.
>>
>>3388506
psychic? where are you getting that from?
the guy is confused and going through some heavy identity crisis coupled with stress at home
can we please focus on hearing him out and trying to help him before devolving into crazy theory territory?
>>
>>3388506
Erick was in a Gantz glitch that occurred during his near death and teleportation that caused him to awaken to psychic potential through contact with an unknown entity people have speculated to be the god alien.

Are you trying to tell me Chris getting knocked out is the same thing for him to get psychic powers?

Like, there's paranoia anon and then there's this.

"Is it like an actual buzzing you can hear?" you ask, sitting down next to him, "Like, actual sound or noise you can hear? I don't know what it is either but, you can tell me all you want."

"It's...not real noise, since it's in my head instead of in my ears" he replies, shaking his head, "and it's not like an actual sound either. More like...there's so many things going through my head that it feels like garbled noise..."

"Do you mean like thoughts or images?" you inquire further and Chris nods in acknowledgement.

"I thought it might have just been a bad fucking headache leftover from the other night", he states, holding his temples, "but those usually make me feel like I'm floating. This felt heavy, with too much going on at once."

This wasn't uncommon when stress became too much for people to bear. Hell, you've had intrusive thoughts or images take place during times when you didn't know what to think. You could sympathize with Chris this much, but you knew that it wasn't healthy to let him linger on it. Especially if part of those thoughts were violent like before.

"Chris, look at me" you assert and he turns to face you with an unusually worried expression, "it's ok. What happened the other night was terrible and I'm happy that you're at least thinking about it."

"But I don't want to think about it" he retorts, getting up out of the bench, "Everytime I've thought about something like this it's always ended up horribly for me or someone else. I don't want to have these thoughts in my head damnit!"

He was breathing a little faster now. No doubt he was agitated from the undue stress of those lingering thoughts. You didn't get up off of your seat though, since it might provoke him further. Instead, you just stayed sitting and kept direct eye contact with his frustrated gaze.

"You don't have to think about it alone Chris" you respond as calmly as you can, "you have Dante and myself. We're both here to help you, even if what you have to say is painful."

Chris's breath slows down slightly, but he doesn't go back to your side on the bench. The agitated look on his face drops a little before he speaks again.

"What I am supposed to do then...? Just...tell you and Dante what's been going on...?"

"That's a good place to start" you answer, getting up yourself, "we wouldn't even have to be here if you don't want to. We came to the zoo for a reason, right?"

"Yeah..." Chris says, and you catch him look away, "I guess we can get out of this part of the zoo. Dante will catch up eventually, I guess."

You nodded your head and gave him a smile. He didn't return the smile but he looked like was opening up to your idea. Chris moved over to one of the landmark maps near the middle of the path, with several places he was looking over. You followed him close, and saw him trailing his fingers on the exhibit symbols.

"Even if Dante doesn't catch up" he says, looking quite serious, "I still have a lot on my head. We can walk and talk."

"Why not here?" you suggest, pointing to a large white symbol with a bison's head.

Chris looked over to the spot for a moment, and let out a sigh, "It's gonna be a walk there, just winds up a lot of the front. This some sort of trick to get me to talk more?"

"No, not really" you respond, looking over to the side, "I just like horses and I think you could benefit from something peaceful for a change. If it's not to your taste-"

"Let's just go Paula" he said brusquely, moving along the path towards the exhibit. You smiled at the slight accomplishment and quickly caught up to him. He didn't look at you, but you could tell there wasn't as much pain in his expression this time.

<May 4rd, Friday 10:45 AM>

"I don't know why, but..." Chris starts, rounding up the path, "it doesn't hurt as much when I'm talking to you. Like, the noise isn't as loud..."

Chris's expression was still very much that apathetic scowl of his throughout your walk to the exhibit, but he didn't look as hurt now. Maybe it was the focus of the conversation that had helped out with the slight recovery. Mainly on how Chris didn't really want to go see some 'hairy cows' and 'boring horses'.

"That's good" you respond, moving next to him, "it means that you're trying to keep your focus away from that noise. It won't go away though until we're more open about it though."

Chris let out another frustrated sigh and seemed to look around, most likely to either ignore your advice to look for the exhibit. His head stopped to your left as the path rounded a corner, to a small stable like exhibit. Your gaze followed his, as you saw a small pasture with some peculiar looking horses.

Chris moved towards it and you followed right behind. There a plaque with the animal's details on it in the railing. He leaned on his side while you took a look a the plaque.

"Prets-Prewz-Prezt..." you try to sound out, "even with a pronunciation guide this name is all sorts of weird. And their heads...they're so wide and fat, they look more like mules than horses."

"A horse is a horse, Paula" Chris says, sounding bored, "long face, four legs, stringy tail. Doesn't change how boring they are, or non-threatening."

"I don't know" you reply, sounding incredulous, "you ever been kicked by a horse? They can trample someone just as well as a bull if you let them."

"I guess", he scoff, shifting his look to you, "but why you like horses this much? Your dad a rancher or something?"

"No, nothing like that" you answer, looking straight at him, "but I've always liked how strong and serene they are when in gallop."

"Did you know the Spanish are the reason there's horse in the US? A few of them get out of a pen, and a century or so, and we have mustangs in Colorado."

Chris didn't respond, and instead just kept looking at the horses. Granted, you figured he wouldn't enjoy this too much, but it was serving in keeping him somewhat docile. Though, you still needed to keep him talking.

I bet proximity and over time exposure to Psychic powers being used can awaken and stimulate them in others.

"Chris, any reason why you chose this place?" you ask, yet his eyes don't turn from the exhibit, "I mean, yeah the zoo is fun but I didn't imagine you as someone who'd enjoy it over anything else really. Anything I'm missing here?"

Chris breathes out a little and makes a grimace that looks somewhat annoyed and painful. You could tell there was something clawing at him to speak out, as he was shaking slightly at your question. He gets off of the railing and turn to you, though his face isn't really pointed at you, moving past towards another side of the path.

"It's where Dante and I first met" Chris answers, motioning you to follow, "back when his mom was still around and back when my mom was as well. I liked coming back here sometimes with him, but after Gantz began I just didn't want to anymore."

You didn't say anything, instead just following him. He sounded angry as he spoke, but you could tell he was trying to remain calm throughout.

"I just didn't want to head out anymore after the game started, I guess because it just didn't seem as fun. Is that the answer you were looking for Paula?"

"Yeah, but" you respond, following close behind, "it almost sounded like you wanted to forget a good memory in not coming here anymore. Is that really what you wanted Chris?"

He didn't answer it immediately, instead just moving towards a bend in the path that led to another pastoral exhibit. This was much bigger than the previous, almost following the path with a fence, and was full of bison and what looked like smaller antelopes. Chris found another place alongside the railing, leaned back and spoke up again.

"I...don't know...I just didn't think about it anymore or cared much about it after the game started. It felt like...I didn't need to come back here anymore and so...I just didn't."

"I see" you reply, standing next to him, "but did come here now because you wanted to remember or-"

"No, it's just" he interrupts, somewhat louder than you'd expected, "...it felt slow and calm...like the opposite of what's in my head right now. It felt like a place where I could...think without worrying so much..."

'He's scared, no, terrified' you surmise, seeing Chris's grimacing expression, 'of what he's going to think of himself before this is over.'

"I must sound like the biggest dumb-ass to your right now. Just...wanting to come here just to think about a headache."

"No, nothing like that" you reply, smiling a little, "everyone needs a place where they can think without being disturbed. And honestly, I'm surprised you're still thinking straight after Dante knocked you out the night prior."

For a second, you thought you saw a movement on his lips, like a smile. It faded the second it came, as a ring on Chris's cellphone almost shook him out of it. An annoyed scoff and pick-up later, he turned to you with that same dour look as before.

"Dante finally got a parking spot, and wants to know where we should meet up for lunch."

"We can wheel around the elephants" you answer, motioning to a split on the trail near the horse exhibit, "if we make for the American Trail, we can see meet him up near the otters. He can probably make it to us since he's not going to be looking around for the animals too much."

Chris nods, and gives Dante your future coordinates where you'll meet up. After a quick goodbye on his part, he pockets his phone and waves you to move to the split in the path towards the elephants.

"He's getting Five Guys" he adds, moving forwards, "didn't know what you wanted, so he's getting you the same thing as me. Anyways, let's head somewhere less boring."

"Right", you reply, before following right behind. It honestly was a better interruption than you expected from Dante. Though Chris had already opened up quite a bit, perhaps Dante's proximity would help to increase his relative closeness.

<May 4rd, Friday 11:25 AM>

"Read in school once that they had war elephants in India" Chris states, making you turn your head in surprise, "what kind of crazy bastard had the idea to try to tame one of those guys? You'd think something that big would just step on something that tried to control it."

Chris's relatively calm behavior was apparent in his walk, yet his speech throughout was still as crass as always. Not that you minded it too much, as at least it kept him mind out of those intrusive thoughts for a bit. What's more, it appeared your prior talk with him had helped ease a bit of the tension on his face. As you crossed over to the American Trail from the Elephant's exhibits, you couldn't help but think what else he'd bring up.

"Couldn't have been more difficult than horses honestly" you reply, crossing the path with him, "lot's of animals can be domesticated if you get them the right amount of food and training. Besides, that guy couldn't have been crazier than whoever domesticated wolves back in the Ice Age."

You actually elicit a grin out of Chris with that comment, though it could have been the first exhibit on the trail. He quickly moves forward towards a large railed pen, with several rocky outcroppings. You head to his position as he leans close to look into the exhibit. Appropriately enough, you spot two wolves near the rocky outcroppings that form a makeshift cave shelter for them.

Chris, oddly enough, puts two fingers to his mouth and emits a high whistle. As if on queue, the two wolves perk up to look for the noise and look straight at Chris, yet immediately go back to laying in their shady cove.

"Damnit, get up!" Chris rants, almost slamming his hand on the railing, "they used to run out of there whenever someone did that. Mom showed it to me way back when, but I haven't been to this part of the zoo in a long time."

"Maybe they just grew out of it", you add, looking at the wolves, "but how did your mom-"

"It doesn't matter Paula" he interjects, still looking at the wolves, "they're kind of boring now though..."

'It's gotta be his mother' you assume, looking at Chris's expression, 'he's still touchy about it, but if he doesn't come here anymore...'

"So, is it just the wolves?" you ask, and Chris gives you an inquisitive look, "the reason as to why you don't come here anymore, I mean. Are they only reason you ever came to this part of the zoo?"

Chris lowers his eyes for a moment, before he turns back to look at the wolves. You expect another drawn out moment of silence from him, no doubt to brood about the question you gave him. Yet, he immediately takes in a breath before leaning back on the rail to look at you.

"Nah, I didn't even know the wolves were like this" he answers, retaining part of his dour look, "it's actually because I never really cared for this part. There's the wolves sure but...not much else..."

That last portion sounded almost dismissive with how he worded it. He was definitely hiding something, but you weren't really sure what it was. If it was related to his mother, the only real connection you had was the wolf whistle. Maybe moving on with the trail would jog some memories, though you would also need to meet up with Dante.

"Alright, no worries then" you reply, and turning your head down the trail, "we can't really back out though since we're meeting with Dante in a bit. So, let's head down farther and see if he's around one of the rest areas."

"Sure, lead the way" Chris responds, and follows right behind you. It was unexpected development, considering he was leading the majority of the time here, but it was mostly because he knew this place better than you. Regardless, you moved onward to find Dante further in the trail.

<May 4rd, Friday 11:45 AM>

Chris didn't really care much for the other exhibits as he followed you further in. He threw a glance at the beavers, otters and big horns but didn't really stop or nudge you take a break to look at them. If he was putting up an act to follow his disinterest in this part of the zoo, it was working. That was until you came across the sea lion exhibit.

The path opened up to a rounded plaza that dipped into steps towards a large tank where you saw two black and brown sea lions swimming about, and another section that looked like picnic tables. That wasn't what caught your eye though, as a large crowd seemed to have formed on the far end of the exhibit's exterior, in what looked like stone stadium stands.

"They're doing a feeding show" Chris exclaimed, with an unusual grin on his face, "hey Paula, you want to go see it? They do tricks on podium in the exhibits with them you know."

"Uhmm," you replied, actually lacking a few words as you were surprised at Chris's excitement. Though, as the crowd formed, you also remembered that Dante may be around. Taking a second to scout around, you noticed you couldn't really find him or that he wasn't here yet.

"Oh whatever" Chris interjected, before running off to the stadium's side, "I'm going either way!"

'The stands make a better spot to look out for Dante' you surmise, looking towards the stadium, 'and he could already be there for all we know. May as well indulge Chris a little.'

You follow behind him, keeping a close eye to not lose him in crowd. While the swarm of people is large enough that you have to watch your step, it's not so condensed it's impossible to move through. Chris eventually decides to stop near the top most part of the stands, near the rightmost edge. Whether he was thoughtful of you or pure coincidence, he leaves you a spot open right next to him.

You quickly scan your surroundings once you reach the top of the stands. To your disappointment, Dante doesn't seem to be either in the stands or the general area of the exhibit. It doesn't bother you too much though, as you take your seat next to Chris.

"You ever seen this before Paula?" he asks in just as an excited look as he arrived to the exhibit, "They only show it in the midday during the weekdays. Only ever saw it with Dante this one time school got cancelled."

"I see" you respond, still somewhat amazed Chris is acting this chipper, "all things considered, I'm quite glad you're enjoying it this much and it hasn't even started yet. I've never seen it myself, but your excitement is pretty infectious."

"Oh- shsshshshh it's starting!" Chris starts and interrupts himself as a couple of zookeepers, a white man and woman, move out of to the middle of the exhibit.

The man announces that the feeding and training show will start soon, waving to the crowd, while his partner brings out a few items in a box and he helps pull out a pale full of silvery fish. The both approach the edge of the rocky center of the exhibit and begin splashing their hands in the water. As if on queue, both sea lions prop their heads out of the water and look straight at the trainers.

You perked your head at how quickly they had responded, and suddenly the keepers made a double clap. Both of the sea lions dived, and then came up almost simultaneously to the keeper's stage, propping themselves next to them. You'd imagined these guys were trained, but this whole thing seemed almost rehearsed given how synchronized they were. The keepers gave them a fish each as they approached, no doubt rewarding them for the quick surfacing.

"Dante said that these guys were like dogs you know" Chris stated, as he kept his full attention on the show, "you train them with treats, whistles and they even bark like dogs. Like that dog we had back way back, a rottweiler my dad named Silver."

"You and Dante had a dog?" you ask, as the crowd cheered no doubt a big trick on stage, "was this when he moved in with you or-"

"No, it was back when-" Chris interrupts, in between cheering with the crowd, "-when mom was still around. She got him for my 8th birthday and he lived up until a few months before Dante moved in."

You could see his expression was turning a bit dour again, but you needed to press on.

<CRITICAL SUCCESS> +1 WIL

"I'm sorry, Chris" you apologize, earning a look of worry from him, "just forget I asked, alright? We're supposed to be enjoying the show and I ask something like that..."

"What?" he replies, looking confused, "Why are you apologizing if I brought it up? It's not like it matters anymore, both my mom and Silver are dead."

His denial, or rather emotional indifference, urged you keep pressing on. If Chris was going to face up to those thoughts of his, it seemed that whatever is happening with his memory of this place and his mother were playing into it. Even if it didn't have much to do with Kurtis directly, it was something that could bring further light to Chris's train of thought if you managed to coax it out of him.

"It's just that you've been mentioning your mom since we started walking around", you continue, and Chris's expression changes to a wary glance, "if you've come to terms with their passing, then it's fine but it almost sounds like you're dismissing it."

"I already told you it doesn't matter Paula" Chris reiterates, looking agitated again, "stop talking already an just watch the show. They're about to do the balancing trick anyways."

"I apologized before because I felt like I was overstepping", you retort, but he isn't looking at you anymore, "but now, I think it may have been the right thing to do. I don't want to ruin the show for you, but you're going to turn this into another out for your grief if you keep-"

"I SAID IT DOESN'T MATTER!" Chris shouts, slamming his fist onto the stone seating below hard enough that he winces at the pain.

Though you're used to his outrage, a few set of eyes on the crowd along with one of the zookeepers on stage turn to look straight at him. Chris's breathing increased pace, and you see him start shaking, almost trembling. His face tells you everything though, as a mixture of frustration and fear billow out. Standing up almost as quickly as he had shouted, he lets out a growl and jumps off of the top stands, running off back to the trail.

'Shit...' you think, jumping off the stands yourself and running right behind him.

You hear the show continue behind, but it fades as you pursue Chris alongside the trail. The kid is fast no doubt, but your suit gives you a definitive edge in catching up. You almost tackle him as he comes up to a fork in the road, and hold him back to the tree line away from prying eyes.

"Let go, damnit!" he shouts, still trying to struggle in your grasp, "everything was fine before you started talking. You stupid bitch!"

"You mean like those thoughts in your head?" you retort, holding his arms in a vice grip, "you mean what happened with Carol or drowning your sorrows in the game? Even if you hate me, I won't let you do this to yourself anymore."

"It's...always so damn complicated with you" he spits out, still shaking, "and for what? Because you think I'm going to be just like the others if you keep bringing me down?!"

+1 Trust <Chris Bowery>

"No" your shout back, almost shaking Chris yourself, "it's because I can't bear to see someone like you do this to themselves! I see it all the time with kids your age and I'm not letting you do it anymore."

"You're lying!" he retorts, he face contorting into an all too familiar rage, "you're only doing this because of them, because they're afraid of me! Because you're afraid I will kill Kurtis and his bitch!"

You tighten your grip harder, and he winces slightly as you reply, "And even if I was, I would still place your wishes above them because I know backed down. Even if the others think you're a monster, my opinion on you is still the same Chris, and last night you showed that to me!"

"W-what are you-"

For a moment, you felt the struggling stop but he started up again as soon as you interjected.

"I became a cop to help people and under all your anger and machismo I see someone asking for help. So let me and Dante help, because we know who you really are."

"Bullshit, you don't know a thing about me. You're not a friend, you're not my family, you're no one!"

He was shaking even harder now, but his struggling was getting weaker. The running along with the continued resistance must be tiring him out.

"I know enough to see you're hurt Chris, and the fact you hurt others to try and mask it proves that to me. But you don't need to rely on that, because Dante and I will help you."

"You're...lying...you dumb cunt...I'll fucking kill you...too..."

Chris's struggling was becoming little more than dull throbs in your arms now. You could hear his breath slowing down, and his trembling was stopping. It was at this point that you loosened your grip a little.

"That's ok" you assure, drawing his arms back to him, "I know you're better than that now. Even if you don't want to admit it to yourself."

Chris's tired breathing was his only reply, it almost seemed labored with how much trembling there was in his voice alone. He was barely moving now, only the occasional tremble seemed to leave his body. It stayed like that for a while, almost complete silence as you still kept a grip on him in the forest besides the main trail, until he decided to finally speak.

"I'm...sorry" he croaked out, and gave him a sympathetic smile, "Paula...I never wanted anyone to know...because I couldn't bear it. And...Dante...I'm so sorry for what I did to him as well..."

"You can tell him yourself" you reply, finally letting go of him and he almost slumped to the ground when you did, "but I'm glad you were honest. But we should find him first, as I think you might be hungry."

"Y-yeah..." he weakly responds, taking in a few breaths, "I'll call Dante...and-"

"Don't worry, I'll get him a call" you interject, taking out your own phone, "just focus on what you want to tell him when we get there ok?"

Chris perks up slightly in surprise, but then just nods in silence. You give him another smile as you type in Dante's number.

<May 4rd, Friday 12:15 PM>

Dante picked up almost immediately, sounding a little worried as he was still searching the trail for you. After letting him know you were alright, you requested to meet at the picnic area near the sea lion exhibit. He complied, and said to come quick unless you and Chris wanted your burgers to get cold; an idea that no doubt put Chris on edge.

It didn't take too long for you to find him back at the picnic area, even with Chris's tired state. You imagined the promise of food and reciprocity from Dante was motivating to keep up with you back. Maybe that was the reason Chris was the first to greet as you spotted him, and almost take off in a run to the table he placed the food on. What followed next, sounded almost alien from Chris however.

"I'm so sorry" he started, almost bowing his head in shame as he looked at Dante, "for last night, Carol, everything... I should have listened so long ago, when you said you wanted to help me Dante...I was just so scared of it because I couldn't bear seeing you die if I became that close you know..."

"Hey, one thing at a time" Dante replies, giving an honest smile to his brother, "but it's all good man, so long as you're willing to go through with the help. As for the Carol thing, that's something you're going to have to apologize in person for."

"I know..." Chris admits, nodding his head, "I'll help you get her back, and I'll help you get Erick back as well Paula. But you both have to put up your end of the bargain as well and help bring her back as well."

"Hah", Dante chuckles, and ruffles a bit of Chris's hair, "it's cool Chris, we got your back on that, 100%. But now, let's get to eating, since I think we're all hungry."

You nod in agreement, as does Chris, and Dante tears open the Five Guys paper bag to reveal your very savory and very greasy lunch.

<May 4rd, Friday 12:45 PM>

It surprised you how well a paper bag kept those burgers and fries insulated, but your lunch was all the better thanks to it. Throughout it Chris kept what seemed like a wave of apologies for several slights with Dante and the group itself. He was even telling Dante about the suggestion for sex back in Bowery's mansion, something Dante was currently acting surprised over.

"Sorry that I was fake about it Paula" Chris said, looking straight at you, "I said a lot of that stuff back then because I wanted get you to trust me enough to do it. It's was all true but for the wrong reason..."

"Well, you owned up to it" you replied, somewhat disgusted that he was lying though, "but to something different though, I need to know what exactly went on with Chris's mother. I get you both have a connection to her, but I need you both to straight with me about why it's affected Chris this much."

Dante drew in a breath, while Chris just looked at him, before he spoke up, "Alright, but it's a long story, and I don't know if Chris is going to want to remember everything."

"No, I can take it Dante", Chris responded, blinking a little, "it's time I fessed up to it as well, from what I know. I know I can trust you both with this much."

Dante gave him a look of worry, but sighed and spoke up, "Alright then, I'll start it. And just for the record, everything I say here stays here."

You nodded in agreement and let Dante begin.

"First off, her name was Julia Kleins and I got to know her at a community event near Franklin's Ward on the north end. She and the senator used to run a charity to help out the ghetto back then, and since my mom worked in the community center, she was their go-to woman."

"From what I remember, she was kind, generous and friendly to everyone she met. But especially a good friend of my mom, so much so that we always took trips to the zoo, museums and theaters back when she was around; it's where I met Chris for the first time."

Chris nods, and urges Dante to continue.

"That was back when I was 10, and we visited Bowery's home a lot for events back then too. But, about four years later, right before Christmas, we got the news she had been in a collision with a semi trailer near route 7."

Chris swallows loud enough you can hear it, and you see his face turn dour again. Otherwise though, he's taking the recollection well.

"She died in the crash and in the funeral a few weeks after, Senator Bowery told my mother he'd take me in if anything happened to her. Guess he didn't want a friend's kid to go through the same thing that Chris did."

You couldn't help but let out a saddened sigh at the events. You turned to look at Chris, and saw that a few tears were forming on his eyes. You were almost going to console him, until he spoke again.

"My dad disbanded the Franklin Charity a month after it happened, and he became really bitter after that. He got rid of nearly all of her things in that month and any time anyone mentioned my mom near him, he'd go off on them."

'Oh my god...' you realized, putting a hand on Chris's back, 'it was all his father...the reason he's been denying everything and acting like that for so long...it began with Bowery.'

"He didn't catch this though" Dante says, pulling out a bronze locket you recognized from the night Dante got hit by the aliens, "it's the last keepsake of my mom I got. A locket that Julia gave her for her birthday, called it a token of familial ties."

Dante passed over the locket to you and Chris's side of the table. Chris picket it up first and opened the compartment, motioning you to take a look. Peering over the side, you saw a smiling family of five people. A younger Dante and Chris were in the front, Chris's mother was on his side with a hand on his shoulder, with a black woman you assumed was Dante mother with her own hand on his shoulder, while Senator Bowery stood behind them all.

"So, what now then Paula?" Chris asked, closing the locket, "now that you know everything, what are you going to do about it?"

Oh right. I think it's important that we tell Chris that he really, for his own sake, needs to not point his weapon at any more friendlies. Other people don't understand him like Paula and Dante do, and they'll probably shoot him the fuck up if it happens again. So it's really important for his own safety that, even if he doesn't intend to shoot, he keeps his guns pointed firmly away from allies. Well, unless he's trying to shoot an alien that's got a hold of someone. That's an obvious exception.

"Don't ask me Chris" you answer, earning a surprised look from him, "it's more of a question of what you're willing to do. Dante and myself can help, but you have to decide for yourself."

Chris looks down for a second, before turning back to you and saying, "I'm not sure where to start honestly. There's so much I've gone back on that I don't know where to honestly start..."

"One step at a time" Dante said, looking over to you, "why not go with what Kurtis said the previous evening. Apologize for the commotion and leaving the training grounds the next time we go in the room."

You could see him grimace at the prospect of going forward with an apology towards people he wasn't that close to. It didn't go away as he replied to Dante.

"Fine...but I want Tanjeet to give me my weapon back. I earned it, and he needs to give it back so I can use it the hunt."

"I'll help you with that" you interject, earning a surprised look from the both, "Tanjeet trusts me more than he probably distrusts you, so he'll listen. Like we said, if you want help we'll be there to help you along."

"Thanks Paula" he replies, smiling in gratitude, which you returned in kind.

"I assume this means you won't try to go after Kurtis either" Dante added, somewhat jokingly, "even if he jumped the gun, I doubt you're not angry. We can trust you with that much, right?"

"I am still very angry, no doubt" Chris responds, and sighs afterwards, "but I won't go after him unless he gives me a reason. Don't think we'll be getting along though, if he's still going to be that much of a hardass."

"Give it time, I'm sure everyone can come around eventually", you add, patting him on the back, "after this hunt though, would you mind if we relate a bit of this to Erick? He did want to help you as well, before he died."

"Erick..." Chris says, looking somewhat estranged by the name, "no, I think I want to tell him myself. If you can trust him Paula, then...maybe I can as well if he did want to help like you mentioned."

You nod in agreement, smiling and Chris returns it in notable happiness. Whatever slights Chris had done before, it seemed like he was making steps to bettering himself. Even if they were as small as just accepting things or apologizing, the goal and destination remained equally noble. To the other side of the table, you could also see Dante smile, doubt happy at how much you'd helped him today.

<May 4rd, Friday 3:45 PM>

The rest of the zoo trip went fairly normal after that, as Chris led you and Dante to some of his favorite locations in there. Notably the Big Cats exhibits, which was now missing a male lion from the enclosure. There was a nervous chuckle out of Chris as he peered inside, but you could tell he was somewhat saddened knowing what had happened. Yet as you were getting ready to leave, Dante told Chris to wait in the car, while he spoke to you alone.

"You did more for him in 1 week, than I could do in 1 year. Paula, how can I thank you for this?"

"Well, I still need a car for getting around" you reply, and Dante nods, "Erick's care is undergoing a police investigation right now, and I have no way of getting it back until next week. That and...well, cabs aren't really cheap here."

"Hey, say no more" Dante answers, smiling a little, "after today, it's the least I can do for you. Not much of the week left either, so it won't be that long either way."

"Thank you Dante" you reply, smiling back, "and you should try to keep Chris from pointing guns at others, more for his sake. One person not trusting him is fine, but I don't know how it's going to go down next hunt if everyone is vying for his head."

"Right, I'll keep him on the loop" Dante adds, and turns towards the car, "with how he is right now, I'm sure he'll understand it better. Only worry now, is if he'll have a relapse if something happens to us."

"Don't think about it too much" you say, moving to the car with him, "we're both fighting for more than just ourselves. If we start thinking about the worst, we can't focus on what's at hand."

Dante nods in agreement, and he opens the car door to let you in. Taking a seat inside, you see Chris in the co-pilot seat sitting very calmly, There's no fidgets or shaking like before and he's even smiling a little as Dante enters the car. He turns back to you as Dante turns the key.

"Hey Paula" he says, catching your attention, "I know I didn't say this too much back there, but thank you. And like I said, I've got your back for bringing Erick back."

You give him a smile of gratitude, and say, "You're welcome Chris, and thank you."

Dante had just made it out of Connecticut Avenue as a call rang through your phone. You brought it close to answer, and saw that it was from an unregistered number. Part of your paranoia wanted to ignore it, but you quickly chose against it.

"Hello, who is-" you started, before a familiar voice cut you off.

"Paula, it's me, Allie" the voice spoke over the phone, "Kurtis is off at work, but we're back from our little drone expedition. Got good news, bad news and worse news though, so if you've got some time..."

"Just give it to me straight" you reply, earning a look from Dante in the rear-view mirror.

"Good news is, we found out what that tunnel was" Allie states excitedly, "the video feed caught so much in it before we lost signal. But the bad news is...we lost the drone and have no way of getting it back..."

"That doesn't sound that bad" you respond, earning a look from Chris now, "sure, it's an expensive robot but doesn't Kurtis have more-"

"Like I said, there's worse news" she interrupts, sounding worried now, "it has to do with where that tunnel leads. But from what I saw...there's a strong possibility someone or something will find it..."

A cold chill ran down your spine, slowly making a realization of what she meant. This wasn't lost on Chris and Dante.

"Understood" you respond to Allie, while Chris and Dante are both eyeing you suspiciously, "I'll meet you over at Kurtis's home in a few moments ok?"

"Got it" Allie states, and you hear a ruffle of hair, " just get here soon, this is very important. See you here."

The call cuts off immediately, and you put your phone back in your pocket. Catching sight of Chris and Dante's gazes, you speak up with a request.

"Dante, mind making a detour over to Kurtis's place? Allie's got something for me there."

<May 4rd, Friday 4:30 PM>

"And there's no way of getting out of there?" Dante asks, and you nod in assurance, "I guess nothing short of climbing down there and a lot of rope I guess. And how deep did she say this tunnel was?"

Dante and Chris had bombarded you with questions regarding Allie's call, and your odd request. And while you managed to relay the jist of what Allie had told you, it just seemed like they had more questions than anything. Thankfully, they didn't really need to go anywhere for today so at least you weren't troubling them with the drive.

"She didn't say" you answer, looking out the window as Kurtis's house came into view, "but you can ask her yourself once we're there. Also didn't mention-"

"Kurtis isn't going to be there, right?" Chris asks, somewhat coldly, "I don't know if he'll let us in if I'm here."

"No, he's at work right now" you reply, moving a little as Dante parks the car on the curb, "and even if he wasn't, I'd just ask him to let us in to apologize at least."

Chris chuckles a little at the last comment, as the car comes to a stop and you and the others unlatch your seat-belts. Moving out of the car, you climb the stairs towards Kurtis's door and you give Allie a call to let you in as always.

"Hey Allie" you speak, as her voice fades in your phone, "I'm outside with a few guests from the team. Mind letting us in if this is importa-"

"What the hell is Chris doing with you?" Allie interrupts, the phone crackling slightly, "is this some sort of joke Paula? You didn't mention them when you called in."

"They're my ride Allie" you reply, moving closer to the door, "and as for Chris, he's actually here to apologize believe it or not. Just...open the door and I'll explain further inside, ok?"

There was a pregnant pause before Allie replied, and you swore you could see her suspicious eye right behind the door's porthole. Not long after though, you heard the sound of several metal locks unlocking and the door creaking open.

"Alright, but get in here fast," Allie said, from behind the door.

You moved in to let the others through first, and then closed the door behind you. On the other side, was a very surprised, and slightly scared, Allie sitting on the living room sofa with a USB in hand. You notice quickly though, she's staring daggers at Chris.

"You're lucky Kurtis isn't here, but don't think I will put up with your bullshit if you try anything. Now, are you ready to see it Paula?"

"Wait, please hear Chris out first before you dismiss him" you answer, earning a look of surprise from Allie, "Dante and myself talked to him about what happened the other night. He's trying to move on from it."

"And you expect me to believe that?" Allie replies, quite dryly, "you expect me to believe the same guy who pointed a gun to both of you and then threatened to kill me and Kurtis is going to change that quickly? What makes you think I'm going to buy that?"

"Because I would have done it already" Chris interjects, as a plastic thump resonates next to his feet.

All eyes turn to Chris's feet, and an inert looking Gantz sword laying next to them. Your eyes widen at the sight, as does Dante's own. There was a terrifying implication your mind sensed in this, yet you were more surprised at how he managed to keep it concealed from you or Dante. Though, no one is more shocked by it than Allie, who's in a state of fear and cold realization.

"That thing is easier to hide under a hoodie than a gun" Chris admits, kicking the weapon towards Allie, who recoils a little at it, "but, I wasn't planning on using it unless something really dumb happened when we went out. Anyways, if that's not proof of me not wanting any trouble, then I don't know what is."

Allie was still shaking a little from the brazen show of evidence, yet she took in a gulp and picked up the weapon. Eyeing it a little, Allie actually got up from the sofa, and walked straight towards Chris in silence. She stopped right in front of him, still holding the sword in her hands, and looked straight at Chris. A paranoid part of you told you tense up if she tried anything, but to your surprise she held the sword's hilt out to Chris.

Chris takes it and Allie finally speaks, "...you're still fucking crazy, but...I think I can trust you in this much. I'm sorry Chris and if you're trying to change, then...I can be a bit open minded to it."

"It's cool" Chris replies, putting the sword under his hoodie again, "and I'm also sorry for everything that happened last night. Besides, Dante said that you weren't going to follow through on Kurtis's plans to shoot me, so I know I can trust you in that much."

"Right, thank you" Allie reciprocates, smiling slightly, "alright, so about seeing what we found. Follow me, and please don't touch anything."

You and the others agree, and follow Allie to Kurtis's room, that is now full of what you can only guess are drone controllers. In the far back, several wires to what looks like a monitor screen in a case are being routed to Kurtis's CPU. Allie sits down on the swivel chair, and motions you all forward to what looks like an old video player on the screen. After putting in the USB, and loading up an external program, the video player pops up with a paused image of that tunnel and Allie's hands.

"The whole feed is 30 minutes" Allie says, winding the footage, "but I can just set it to when we saw what I mentioned in the call."

"Don't want to linger too long" you reply, taking positions near the bedside, "just get us about 2 minutes before and after that thing you saw in the feed. That way, we can have it fresh in our minds."

"Got it" Allie acknowledges, and begins adjusting the video feed, "can't get you 2 minutes after, since the feed cuts a few seconds after we saw it. I'll try to include as much as I can though."

Allie's cursor traces the feed forwards to 26:02 before she un-pauses the footage and you and the others huddle in close to see darkness surround a bright light. Just as you had imaged, the tunnel was a dark, and completely light-less environment, only illuminated by what you assumed was the drone's light. In spite of what looked like a steep incline, the drone was descending surprisingly balanced down the tunnel's smoothed out surface.

The smooth surface of the tunnel looked like a type of plastic or metal, yet it didn't shine normally. It could have been treated with something to keep from doing that, but it almost seemed to be absorbing the light instead of reflecting it. The strangest thing about it however was that there weren't any marking or scratches on the surface, almost as if someone had cleaned it; or had never used it to begin with. It went on like this for another 3 minutes of monotonous tunnel travel, until 29:42.

The tunnel seemed to open up as the drone's camera began to sputter slightly, almost as if it was entering a room. Your suspicions were proven correct, as the drone dipped heavily and fell down what couldn't have been more than a few feet. It tried to move around, yet on the whirring of its tracks could be heard as it tried to get up in vain. Nonetheless, the camera moved about for a few moments, trying to guide the light to the larger area. That's when a mechanical drone, almost like a voice, range out in a harsh tone.

<VIAH KARVEERH - ETRERCH - ETRECH - ETRECH - VIAH KARVEERH>

It sounded almost like a siren or a warning system, though the audio began to sputter out as this happened. The footage was about five second to finishing, when a few bright lights illuminated the open area. The drone's camera began to sputter again, this time the digital footage began to tear, but you made out a dark room with what looked like strangely shaped monitors inside. You heard what sounded like voices interlaced with growling before the audio became too indistinct to make out. As the final seconds whined down, the last image you saw was a set of clawed fingers reach out for the camera's lens.

"Signal began sputtering as soon as it entered that room" Allie says, looking at your stunned face, "it wasn't more than 5 miles down, but Kurtis's hardware boosts it up to 10. I have no idea what could have done it short of some kind of jammer."

"Man, fuck the jammer" Chris gets up, moving the footage back to the last image of the clawed fingers, "we just confirmed that those fuckers are somewhere underground right now!"

"Yeah, he's right" you add, moving to Chris's side, "but we should be focused on getting that drone back. Like you mentioned before Allie, there's no telling what those things are going to do with something of ours in their possession."

"But how?" Allie exclaims, swiveling around to look at you, "we can't track if it's out of range, and we certainly can't go down there ourselves if those things are really down there. I don't even want to take the chance of telling someone about this, not just because of the drone being tracked back to me but...I don't know if Gantz will kill us if we try."

"What about tracking it's trajectory?" Dante suggests, moving to Allie's side, "if this tunnel has an incline, we can try to track its starting point to the end point through the length of the drone's travel against the incline. We can then just head in the direction of the tunnel, and try to see if there's any entrances to that underground room wherever the end point may be above ground."

"We could do that..." Allie replies, looking thoughtful, "but there's no way of telling if that room even goes above ground. Honestly though...that drone could be long gone if whatever grabbed it took it away."

"Whatever the case" you continue, looking at the image, "we're going to have to be on high alert from here on. If Kurtis has any security cameras or surveillance equipment, I think now is the time to get it ready."

Allie nods her head with a worried look over it, and says, "Goddamnit, this was such a dumb idea from the start...I'm sorry Paula, I should have just left it well enough alone..."

"Don't beat yourself up over it" Dante soothes, putting a hand on her shoulder, "you put yourself on the line for this information, and you better believe we're going to put it to use in the future."

"Thanks Dante" Allie responds, smiling slightly.

<May 4rd, Friday 5:00 PM>

You and the others helped Allie pack up the drone's gear back into Chris's closet after the talk. She'd agreed to Dante's plan and said she'd get ready to calculate that room's above-ground location by Saturday. Before you left Kurtis's home though, Allie made it a point of seeing Chris before leaving; something you were close enough to listen in on.

"I'll talk to Kurtis about trying to make amends" Allie said in a serious tone, "even if he refuses to speak to you, I'll have your back once we meet up with the others in the apartment room again. Just...don't act like a dick anymore, alright?"

"I'll do my best" Chris replied, and began walking out of the house, "goodbye Allie and thanks again."

Chris walked back down the steps towards you and Dante, looking somewhat calmer as he approached.

"So, how was it?" you ask, earning a confused look from him, "feeling better now after apologizing?"

"Yeah...at least a little" Chris replies, walking down the steps with you and Dante, "but with the remaining noise, I should talk to Kurtis to silence it. Anyways, where to Paula?"

A small flicker went off in your brain and dug through your pockets, pulling out your wallet and looking through the far pocket right behind your cash. Finding the desired item, you bring the Scorpion Triad's business card close for everyone to see.

"What is that like a zoning or real estate company?" Dante questions, drawing in close to look at it, "It looks legit, but are you looking into buying some building space Paula?"

"No, it's actually for an investigation" you clarify, letting Dante hold the card, "Tanjeet got it off of a Triad member back in Chinatown yesterday at lunch. I just never got the chance to check out that address is all."

"Why do you want to check it out so bad?" Chris asks, with a confused expression, "yeah, I get you're a cop, but shouldn't you just report this to your police friends and be done with it?"

"Because one of their men is part of Gantz New York" you answer, earning a surprised look from everyone, "what's more, this is certainly the same guy who killed Yukino. Even if I was to report this to the police, I need to know if this address is actually a Triad front."

"Ok...but," Dante interjects, giving you quizzical look, "do you have a plan in mind for getting in?"

<May 4rd, Friday 5:45 PM>

"No, I don't want to be a part of this" Tanjeet answers, earning a 'Why not?' from you, "mainly because I am not going anywhere near that crazy bitch from the Chinese restaurant. Even if we had the suits, I don't think we'd be able to walk out of there easily."

Dante had driven you to Tanjeet's dorm after you had explained to him the current plan for getting into the Triad's building. You were to let Tanjeet hold the Triad's attention, as a bit of bait for the Scorpion Triad, while you and Dante went invisible to find anything incriminating them of running a criminal front. Yet, after arriving and surprising Tanjeet with Chris's sudden appearance, it seemed that current negotiations weren't going too well.

"Come on man" Dante interjects, moving up behind you, "do us a solid here. You're not gonna be in any danger either, since we're gonna be the ones sneaking in you know."

"That's not the point" Tanjeet replies, looking over to you, "first off, they'll keep tabs on everyone close to us if they know our faces. Secondly...I don't want to have another woman besides Maria saying those things to-."

"Hey Tanjeet" Chris interrupts, looking out from his window, "Do you know where my big gun is? I remember you were the last one that had it."

"Oh, well, the twins have it" he replies, earning a concerned look from Chris, "after the night prior, they never took it out of their car. They're probably back home in Fairfax, right no-"

"FUCK!" Chris stomps his foot, and leaves the room quickly.

"Damnit, Chris come back!", Dante shouts, following right after him.

"...yeah, he really changed", Tanjeets quips sarcastically, looking at you, "but, seriously. Do you have any other alternatives to this plan?"

You don't answer Tanjeet, and instead speed out of the door after Chris. In the faint distance, you hear Tanjeet's voice calling for you to wait, along with the door slamming shut. You don't pay it too much attention, and instead find Chris struggling with Dante outside of the dorm's lobby.

"Damnit, don't do anything stupid Chris" Dante commands, holding onto Chris by the shoulders, "we know where it is, but we can get it after we help Paula. I know it sucks, but-"

"It's mine damnit!" Chris growls, still struggling in Dante's arms, "only I know how to use it! If they're screwing around with it, they could put us in a lot of trouble!"

"Then we'll go and get it with you" you suggest, making Chris turn his head to you, "I don't think those girls are going to be as welcoming as Tanjeet, given the circumstances. I'll give them a call, but you'll have to lay low when we head over there."

Chris looks at you with expectant eyes, but you reassure him with a nod. His breathing slows down to a calm and he lets out a sigh of frustration. Upon seeing his brother calm down, Dante lets him go and Chris moves towards the car's parking space.

"Make sure they're home first" Dante states, passing you to get to the car, "don't want to be driving out of DC for no reason now..."

You want to retort, but just shake your head and head over to the car. Before you do though, a trotting sound behind you turns your head. A panting Tanjeet stands in front of you, speaking out a simple request.

"Wait...please let me come with. It's...really fucking boring in that dorm without those two around."

<May 4rd, Friday 6:30 PM>

After bringing Tanjeet in the car, you gave a quick call to Claire and thankfully she replied back that Silvia and her were currently at their parents' home in Farr Oak, Fairfax. After giving Dante the coordinates for their home, you let Claire in on the reason for calling. Surprisingly enough, she didn't make a fuss about giving you the weapons, as saying that they were afraid their parents would find it eventually.

Though, noting that her parents were currently home, it would make retrieving it more difficult as it was currently in their garage hidden in a suitcase. Chris opposed the idea of waiting for the parents to leave, but Dante instead suggested to have someone run interference for the parents while someone went in to retrieve the weapon. The planning stages didn't go much further, as you soon as approached the twin's home.

"I'll let my dad know know we have visitors" Claire finalized over the phone, "I'll have Silvia open the garage door once your'e there. Don't stick around for dinner, my mom's mac&cheese is terrible."

"Got it, and thank you Claire" you reply, and end the call right after.

Looking over your target, it didn't seem like too difficult of an operation to pull off. Though, honestly, this seemed like a theft the more you thought about it. Nevertheless, you'd need to pick out someone to carry it out.

"Dante, you're with me, keep the cloak on and move close" you command, putting down your phone.

"Paula, hold on, I don't have my suit on" he replies, looking somewhat lost on your command, "I'll stay by the car with Chris to keep a lookout though. Just call me when you're close to the car so I can get the trunk open."

You nod in agreement and sit patiently in your seat as he makes his way to the front door. After ringing the doorbell, a balding, middle aged meets Tanjeet in the front door. He's tall, almost as tall as Kurtis, and he looks muscular even for his current age. Yet, in spite of his intimidating size, the man greets Tanjeet with a smile and kind words. A few moments later, he lets him inside and Tanjeet flashes you and the guys a thumbs up.

'Here we go' you think, quickly activating your cloak, and moving out of the car.

You knew that there was no way anyone could see you, but it didn't mean they wouldn't suspect something if they heard anything. So, you kept a low profile and approached the other side of the house where you saw the garage door. As you sneaked around their lawn, you caught a few glimpses of Tanjeet through the windows.

He was speaking to the bald gentleman, along with Claire and another, older woman sitting beside them in a dinner table. It seemed like they really wanted to Tanjeet to try something, but you didn't stick around to find out as you moved to the other side and found the garage door still closed. You gave it a light knock, figuring Silvia must be here if she wasn't at the dining room with the others.

As you expected, she was indeed there as the garage door opened revealing her along with a lot of appliances, gardening tools, and boxes from what you suspected was their dorm move.

"Paula, if you're there" Silvia started, looking at nothing in particular, "we left that thing in one of the bigger moving boxes. It's the one labeled-"

"Silvia!" a woman's voice called out, "we're have a guest over! Stop messing around in the garage and get in here little missy! And close that door, don't want any raccoons getting in again."

"Shit..." she hisses, and then moves her hand to the garage door button, "I'm coming, ok!"

She must have been more absentminded than you remembered as she forgot to tell you which box it was in before heading through the garage door. To almost shout to get her attention, but stop yourself in between down so. You let out a sigh, and take a look around the amount of junk currently in this place.

<SUCCESS> [2/4 INT]
<May 4rd, Friday 6:55 PM>

You had lost track of time by now, as you kept searching for those boxes and subsequently Chris's gun. After searching through the boxes you could see on the surface, making sure to not cause too much of a ruckus in the garage, you moved on to obvious hiding spots. Many of the larger moving boxes you found either contained clothes, books, or other such items.

The quality of the items almost made you jealous of the amount of money the twins's parents must have. Not that you cared too much, just on the sheer fact that they probably didn't even think how much it most cost their parents. Then, you came across a box with a rattling inside, one that was much lighter in weight than the others.

You quickly went to open it, pulling apart the duct tape like wet tissue paper with the suit's strength. Just as you suspected, it was Chris's weapon, just laying in the box without any sort of covering or even safety holds yet it was nonetheless unharmed. You quickly pulled it out of the box and then got an idea.

'If the cloak can mask weapons we hold' you think, pulling up behind a screen of boxes, 'then in theory, it should let me cloak this thing if I just reset it.'

You quickly turned off the cloak behind your screen of junk, and grabbed Chris's weapon. With a press of the radar's button, you turned back the cloak and saw the thin outline spread to the weapon in your hands. Your theory was correct and, after congratulating yourself a little, you made for the garage door button.

The door opened like it did before and you made your way to it as it opened. Just as you were halfway there though, you received a call on your phone. No doubt, either Tanjeet was being led out of the house or someone was heading to the back. Not wasting any time, you moved as quickly as you could and jumped to the side of the house as you heard the garage door being opened.

"What the heck...?" a man's voice rang out, as you pressed against the outside wall, "damnit, can't believe she messed it up again. Hey Silvia-"

You didn't stick around to hear the rest of his tirade, but you assumed Silvia was going to get a talking to because of the garage door. Moving back to the front of the house, you made your way to Dante's car and gave it a knock to open the trunk. Just as you hoped, he did as instructed and you stuffed the weapon in the back.

On the other side of the car, you let the cloak go as you entered the passenger door and found a very groggy Tanjeet sitting next to you. It looked like he had eaten something that didn't agree with him very well and looked half awake.

"Mac & Cheese isn't supposed to have tofu..." Tanjeet belched a little, rolling down the window "glad to have you back Paula...oh god...you owe me for this by the way."

"Yeah, you can say that again" Chris adds, looking back at you, "Thanks Paula, that was pretty awesome. Anyways, we're heading back home, unless you've got somewhere to be?"

"Take us back to your place Dante" you instruct, putting on your seat-belt, "we're probably closer than the GW campus. Plus, it'll give Tanjeet a bit of time to air out."

"You got it Paula" he replies, moving the car out of the neighborhood, "like we promised, I'll leave it in your hands for the weekend. Just be sure not to throw up in here Tanjeet, cause it's still my problem until I make it back home."

After another unusual belch from him, Tanjeet just said, "No promises."

<May 4rd, Friday 7:50 PM>

While the way back to Bowery's mansion wasn't as long, it seemed to take longer as the nighttime rush of traffic to and from DC seemed to make the drive all the more difficult. Tanjeet had a least stopped his nauseous phase and was now gawking at the size of the mansion as Dante pulled up to the intercom.

"Hey Joel, you in there?" Dante asked the intercom.

"Good Evening Master Dante" Joel's voice resounds from the mechanical speaker, "I'll open the gate. Though, I should let you know, your father is currently out of the house so responsibilities for your party will fall on you tonight."

"Thank you" Dante replies, chuckling a little, "don't worry, they aren't staying for long. I'm letting one of them borrow my car, so let Bowery know about it when he comes in."

There is a sound of agreement from Joel, and the doors open up to let the car inside. Dante moves it in, and makes for the underground garage on the other side of the rounded front end. The sight continued to amaze Tanjeet, yet not more so until he spoke up again.

"I can't believe you guys live like this. How rich did you say your dad was Chris?"

"Never asked, though being a senator gives him a lot of money. He also has a ton of other business he does on the side, but he never mentions it to any of us."

'Is he talking about the Triad?' you assumed, as Dante drove the car down to the garage, 'besides them and the FBI...what the hell else is Bowery involved in?'

Dante parked the car near the back end of the garage, near what looked like a supply closet and the door to the basement. Both him and Chris got out right after, and made for the trunk where the weapon was stored. Spotting some blankets near the supply closet, you left your seat to give one to Dante in wrapping up the weapon.

"Thanks Paula" he said, holding onto the precious package and then looking at Chris, "I'll get this to your room. Don't be too long, ok?"

You give him a look of confusion as he leaves, before Chris speaks up looking straight at you, "Paula, I know you're getting tired of hearing this, but...thank you. Not all of the noise is gone but you helped me so much."

"Don't mention it" you say, smiling, "just keep an eye out for your dad. And if you want to talk about that last with Kurtis-"

"I think I'll do that when we're in the room" he interjects, looking quite sure, "but there's something else. I want to have another fight with you in that place, tomorrow, no more holding back."

"Any time" you respond, giving him a grin of confidence, "of course, I'm sure you mean with just sword again, right? Just tell me the time and I'll be there, I'll even bring Yukino-"

"No, you can't bring here there" he interjects, looking at you quite seriously, "I won't be holding back this time, so it'll be dangerous for anyone nearby. If we do it in the morning near that stream again, there'll be no one there to stop us."

"Alright, I suppose" you reply, somewhat warily, "I'm placing a lot of trust with you here Chris. Just understand that we still have a mission after this, so try to at least not go too rough."

"Got it" he says, nodding his head, "anyways, I'll see you Paula. Thank you again."

You give him another nod and a smile, before he leaves for the basement alongside with Dante. You can't help but feel a little nervous about going alone with him again, but you're much more trustful of him now that he's more or less laid his thoughts bare to you. Not wanting to waste anymore time, you head to the driver's seat and start up the car.

<May 4rd, Friday 8:30 PM>

"You sure he's gonna be alright?" Tanjeet asks, staring straight out of the co-pilot's window, "he's sounds like he's changing for the better, but he's still seems unpredictable or at least easily riled up. You sure it's a good idea giving him that big gun back?"

Tanjeet had gone shotgun before you left the mansion and he still couldn't help but gawk at the four other cars in the garage before he did so. Though, after heading out of the mansion to his place, his attention had shifted to the topic of Chris. He'd been unusually silent the whole trip to the Twin's home, but now it seemed he couldn't stop himself from speaking about the guy. Even as you were pulling up to his dorm, it didn't seem like he had the intention to stop.

"I want to think of this as parole" you answer, pulling up to the curb, "we're giving him a degree of trust here, but keeping a watchful eye regardless. He's willing to make amends for what happened, so I think it's a good start for him."

"I'll trust your judgement on it" Tanjeet replies, unlatching his seat-belt, "and hopefully still be alive after this weekend to see it. Have a good one Paula."

He waves goodbye after closing the door, and walks back to his dorm. His response was about what you expected, but you couldn't help but feel that it was going to be much worse than just wariness from the others. You were about to pull out of the dorm space, when a ring on your phone shook on your hip. Picking it up, you saw that the name was that of Luis Serros.

"Paula, I don't have much time, so I'll be brief" his hurried tone rang out over the speaker, "the FBI have cleared out of the station, but there's something going on with the chief. He met up with someone today and I overheard them speak your name and that missing boyfriend of yours in there."

You put the car in gear, and began heading home from the dorms as Luis mentioned the news. It came across as a wake-up slap, though you knew very well there was more to this than he was letting on. As the night lights of DC passed by your windows, you asked further into his news.

"What exactly did they say Luis? Did you hear anything else from them?"

"Only that they'll be in talks this weekend as well, but I had to get out of there as their meeting ended. No other mentions regarding you or Erick though."

"You don't think we're being implicated right? I know Rick's been on my case since we lost Allie Pierce but how can he think I'm abetting a domestic terrorist when no one even saw her get out of her cell?"

"I didn't say he was, but I can understand why it sounds like that, especially after that second interrogation with your boyfriend. Either way, there's not enough information on either side to really say anything definitive."

"Damnit, I hate it when everyone is being cryptic-"

A sound like a door closing came over the phone loudly and it signaled Luis to quickly whisper a goodbye to you.

"Shit, Paula, I have to go. I'll keep you informed if anything changes ok, bye."

The call cut out after that, without you even able to return his goodbye. You quickly put down your phone and returned your focus to the road. Not that you could really focus all that well, given the sudden rush of news you'd gotten. Like Luis mentioned, it wasn't anything definitive, but it didn't make you any less worried.

'If worst comes to worst' you think to yourself, heading a few turns, 'I'll just have to lay low for a bit until we can find something to clear us...Goddamnit...I hope Kurtis has a spare bunk if that happens..."

<May 4rd, Friday 9:10 PM>

You'd arrived home a little later than expected as the night-life of DC had you stuck in traffic for a few traffic lights. It always amazed you how many of the high society in the city partied not a block down of where places like Dante's old neighborhood were. You'd seen it at times in New York, but everything always seemed more condensed in this city. You didn't linger on those thoughts too much more, as you headed up to your apartment.

It didn't take too long to for Luis's news to resurface in your mind as you entered however. Alongside it was the worry of Chris's improvement and that requested rematch he wanted tomorrow morning. It didn't help the thought of what that Triad was trying to lure Tanjeet into, or what Bowery had going on with them back his home. Everything began to sound like garbled noise in your head as you made your way to the bathroom.

'Yeah, I think I know exactly how you felt Chris' you remark, undressing for a nightime shower, 'but after this weekend, I think we'll handle it a bit better. Erick, just wait a little longer.'

Unlatching the suit's buttons, and placing your clothes in the sink, you went inside and let the cold water take those thoughts away for a bit.

up until now Paula probably dreaded the moment a hunt would come, for this one, it can't come sooner
>>

You clenched your fist at the start and at the end of your shower. You liked to think it was frustration leaving your body. Like the cold water on your body, it felt cleansing to do as it released part of that stress rumbling in your head. Whether it was healthy or not, you didn't really care, as you made your way out of the shower and dried yourself off in your room.

Just in this week alone, so much had been thrust upon you after Erick's passing and you'd managed to keep it all stable up until now. You would have been more proud, but you knew full well that it would mean nothing if you couldn't make it past this weekend's mission. You didn't go to arrange your towels this time, merely dropping them near the foot of your bed as you put on your sleepwear.

'It's just like always though' you think, slipping into bed, 'I just have to grit my again, nothing's really changed. We're not through just yet Gantz.'

You went to sleep with a determined look on your face, if anything to just drive all of those arguing thoughts away for the evening.

<May 5th, Saturday 7:30 AM>

You woke up today surprisingly well and, besides a bit of regular morning lag, your head didn't feel as rough as the day before. It wouldn't have mattered much, as you would have gotten out of bed and gotten ready regardless, but the clarity of mind certainly sped up your process. After getting breakfast set out, just normal fare though you noticed that the fridge was now dangerously low on stock, you were interrupted by a text from Chris.

<Yo, pretty early to text but come pick me up in a bit. Had a weird dream last night, I'll tell you about it when we head to the place. Dad didn't come home last night, so I guess this counts as staying away?>

You raised your eyebrow at that last comment, but you brushed it off as Bowery's own stupid insistence on that proposal of his. He must have stayed up all night trying to talk to his peers about it. It almost made you smile given his own childish rage.

<Sure, I'll be there in a bit. Hopefully, it wasn't too weird.>

He's quick to send you another message, as you finish your bacon.

<Cool, and no promises on how weird that dream got.>

<May 5th, Saturday 8:20 AM>

After finishing your food, cleaning your dishes, and getting your equipment ready for the duel, you headed towards Bowery's mansion to pick up Chris. You'd caught the morning rush there, but it cleared up the moment you managed to get out of Downtown. After pulling up to the familiar gate, and having Chris buzz you in through the intercom, you made your way to entrance. Not a few moments after parking, Chris made his way out seemingly unarmed but with the suit's buttons jutting under his jaw.

"Sup' Paula" he greets, seating himself in the co-pilot seat, "don't worry, i got my sword, not baddass enough to take you unarmed. You ready for this?"

"Yeah" you eagerly agree, shifting the car into gear, "but, I'm concerned over what you said in your text about a dream. What was that all about?"

You manage to circle the curb and head out of the gates before Chris replies.

"Like I said, it's very fucking weird since it involved Gantz and oddly enough Erick. I didn't even go to bed that late, but it felt like one of those half-awake nightmares I get sometimes..."

"As far as I remember it, I was running in a long corridor, but the floor was metal and I couldn't see anything except this light creeping out of a metal door. The door was huge, and I could barely reach the handle to open it."

"On the other side, was a massive. empty white room and the only things in it were myself and Gantz in the dead center. I tried to approach it..but I heard Erick's voice...everywhere."

"He was shouting at me from every direction in the room, and it was so loud it felt like he was shouting in my head itself. I couldn't understand what he was saying, it sounded metallic or garbled, but I didn't hear it much longer before I woke up like I was lacking breath."

"It almost does sound like a nightmare" you reply, sounding more worried than you should have, "but you were right in that it was weird. I don't have an idea what it could mean though."

Chris nods his head in agreement, before replying, "I don't know either, but...there was something familiar about it."

"What do you mean?" You ask, making for the other side of the road, "Like, you remember the place you saw or that you dreamed about a memory itself?"

"No...I didn't recognize anything about it," Chris replies, shaking his head, "not where it was or what was even going on. More like it felt natural, like how you memorize a trained motion like how to hold onto a game controller."

You honestly had no idea what all of this could mean, but given that Chris seemed more calm now, you tried to reassure him.

"Well, as far as I know, those kind of dreams have a habit of propping up again from time to time. Maybe next time you could recognize something new about it, but it must feel good to get it off your chest."

"Yeah, it sure does" he replies, smiling in gratitude, "Dante's the only other person I've told, so it is good. Thanks Paula."

<May 5th, Saturday 8:50 AM>

While Chris's dream about his dream drew your attention towards him in concern, it wasn't something physically dangerous or strange. Yet as you pulled up to Soapstone Valley Park for what seemed like the third time this week, you remembered something about his suit you saw at the mansion.

"Hey Chris" you start, and he turns his head, "did your suit fix itself yesterday? Because I can see it activated but the lights aren't on."

"You didn't know?" he replied, giving you an incredulous look, "it's still deactivated, but you can still wear it normally. Consider it a handicap for today, unless you think you can't take me on in this state?"

"Wait", you respond, finding a place to park near the entrance, "didn't you say you were going all out? Shouldn't you wait until after the mission to do this since you've have your suit back?"

"That was the original plan" he answers, grinning a little, "but I then started to think about this whole week or so. About how I treated you and the others, and I could make up for it."

"We already talked about this Chris" you continue, resting the car in the gravel space, "we'll help you with apologizing, but you also have to give them time. What are you even trying to-"

A rush of noise from the back interrupts your speech, as Chris's body almost shoots forward to the back of the seat. You turn your head back with enough time, to find the now unsheathed sword's blade up to your neck. The sword can't hope to cut your suit without the proper amount of force applied, but you soon notice where the other end of the blade is at, Chris's wrist.. A cold, yet very serious expression is on Chris's face as you look at him through the rear-view mirror.

"Paula, please hear me out" he starts, speaking in a tone you could only describe as dead serious, "I want to atone for everything I have done, but I can't think of another way of doing this that will satisfy Kurtis, Silvia and Claire. They aren't like the others, they won't forgive me until I am dead."

"So this is your plan?" you reply, trying to match his serious tone, "getting killed by my hand so you can satisfy them? Even Dante, Allie, Tanjeet and myself are ready to start forgiving you and helping you?"

"No, this about proving something to myself" he states, pressing the blade a little tighter to your neck, "that I am strong enough to change, in spite of what I've done. I thought about ending it all to give the Kurtis what he wanted, but I know it would hurt you and Dante all the more."

"Chris...you know this is-" you speak, before you see the blade press harder on Chris's wrist.

"Stop talking Paula, and please lead the way to the river" he interrupts, almost sounding somber, "if you don't do it in the next 7 seconds, I will kill myself right here. Don't worry about an alibi, I wrote a letter under my bed if I die."

This all made too much sense to you, that in some sort of sick, twisted way Chris was going to pull something stupid like this during the training session. Yet, you didn't expect it to be for the reasons he laid out. It almost made you feel guilty for assuming his intentions, yet you knew full well that he still wasn't in his right mind throughout this.

'Guess we couldn't fix everything...' you surmise, breathing in a little, 'maybe we should have given it a little bit more time. Goddammit Chris...not like this...'

"7" Chris starts, narrowing his eyes as he counts down.

"Ok, you win" you interrupt, sighing in frustration, "I'll lead you there. But when we come back, you are going to tell Dante everything that happened here."

"Don't you mean 'if' I come back?" he asks with certainty, but you refuse to respond, "fine, I'll go with it Paula. Let's get going, we're going to waste the morning if we stay in here the whole time."

Chris removed the blade from the your throat and his wrist, before sheathing it again. The metallic sound of the sword retracting reverberated in the car before he quickly made his way out. For a moment, you thought about swiftly moving to the side of the car, knocking Chris out and just driving him back home. Yet, as you exited the car yourself, you knew that at this point it would only betray the trust you'd built up with him.

'Even if it's a dumb proposal' you think, locking out the car, 'I have to stick to what I promised. I just hope this isn't some kind of relapse.'

As you got out of the car, Chris looked at you with expectant eyes. His sword wasn't drawn, and it was hidden behind that hoodie of his again. You let out a slight sigh, and motioned him to follow you.

<May 5th, Saturday 9:10 AM>

It didn't take you too long to find the aforementioned area, as you remembered it quite well from your previous visits to this park. The small river crossing the forest still heralded the calm of the very land here, a contrast to the events that had taken place. Soon enough, the trees would be subject to another fight for survival. Upon reaching the far edge of the small river, you heard the sound of Chris's footsteps stop in the river's gravel bank.

"Remember when we came here for the first time?" he spoke, making you turn around to face him, "I didn't really think about why I chose this place then, I just did it because I wanted somewhere familiar to spar with you. But now...I think I know exactly why I chose it."

You were intently listening to him here, not daring to interrupt. It was a stance you'd taken since you started your walk here, only letting the sounds of the forest narrate the journey. Not a word was spoken then, and you weren't going to speak further now.

"It was the one time I felt truly helpless" Chris continued, looking at the flowing river, "truly useless, truly alone yet surrounded by people. I wanted this to be the place where I would throw all of that away for good."

His gaze quickly shifted to you, in that same intense look he'd given you back in the car. With a swift motion, he drew the Gantz sword and unsheathed the blade. Drawing one of his legs back, and both of his hands stretched forward on the hilt of the blade, he faced you down.

"Let's make this good Paula."

"Alright then" you reply, drawing your own sword and unsheathing it, "but consider this a wake up call from me. I always keep my promises Chris."

Taking one foot back, just as Chris showed you in the first spar you had, you lower your blade slightly. He called this a defensive stance, better to move and swerve against your opponent's weapon. It was a strategy that wouldn't have normally worked given how aggressive he is with his suit on. But for this moment, you were going to let him crash on you like a wave on a cliff.

Chris grinned that familiar, sadistic little grin of his, and charged at you with a savage roar.

<BARE SUCCESS> <-1 WIL, +1 INT>

Chris's attacks came at you with such ferocity, it was almost hard to keep up with. Given his natural speed and proficiency with a sword, it wasn't as easy of a fight that you were expecting. But that was ultimately all he had, as the speed at which his attacks came was the only thing keeping you from just knocking the weapon from his hands. What's more, there was such an incredible unpredictability to his assault.

For every stab and swipe of the blade, there was a thrust and slash that came from a different direction. It almost seemed like he was attacking random areas of your body, yet the precision at which he attacked spoke otherwise. It was almost blinding to keep up with, even just to effectively block his attacks. And with every attack, you felt that he was managing to push you back if only by sheer force of space denial through the environment.

Even more hard to believe, was the fact that it didn't seem like he was tiring. You couldn't guess the time, but it felt like it had been more than fifteen minutes of pure attacking from him without a sign of him slowing down. He was also growling and shouting like an animal throughout this, so much so you were actually getting worried someone would overhear and investigate. As this continued, your fight took you from the river, to part of the inner forest.

"Goddammit, attack me Paula!" Chris shouted, as you blocked another blow to your neck, "you can't defend forever dammit! This isn't a goddammit fight unless you fight me back!"

That was when you saw it, the flaw in his assault that showed up the moment he led you into the forest. For all of the expertise Chris carried with his blade, it didn't seem like he had much patience for this kind of fight. If he had his suit, he would just rely on ending the fight right then and there, but with how evenly you shadowed his attacks, it began to cause him to overextend.

His attacks where still coming fast, but the last one he launched was almost reaching out to you with reckless abandon. Deciding to indulge him, you activated your suit and deftly parried his last thrust. The impact unbalanced Chris, causing him to recoil at your sheer strength, before you closed the distance. In a single motion, you kicked the sword out of hand and swiveled on your heel to hold his neck by your sword like he had done.

In the turn however, you misjudged by an inch, and instead slashed a clean cut right across Chris's left cheek. It was a superficial cut, but it splashed his face with blood. He let out a growl of pain, as you quickly moved to his side to inspect the wound.

"Shit, Chris are you ok?" you asked, moving to his side to look at the wound.

But he only gave you an indignant look, as rolled out of your reach and reached for his sword. Getting up to raise against you once again, he faced you down again, though with a bit of blood now trailing down his face.

'He's really this determined...' you conclude, looking at the sheer defiance in his eyes, 'Chris, you are crazy but I'm sorry I judged you before like I did. It almost reminds me of-'

You didn't get to finish your thought as Chris charged again, this time though, he was aiming for your legs. He must have figured that your stance was the only thing keeping him at bay, but even with this assault you could have kept up the defensive posture. That time however, was over, as with the final two thrusts, you let him guide you to another stance.

Planting your foot forward, you parried him again, but this time you kept your stance firm. Holding your sword out, you replicated Chris's stance from the start of the duel. Chris recovered quickly, but for a brief moment, there was a pause in the air as the only movement in the area was in your rising breaths.

<GREAT SUCCESS>

Even with your more aggressive stance, you let Chris make the first move. His initial charge was every bit as relentless as when you had started. Even with blood dripping down his face, he didn't slow down one bit as he savagely slashed away at you. He was pushing you back again, but this time you held back just enough to lead him into your own attack.

On the final slash, aimed squarely at your midsection, you leaned forward and jumped with the enhanced propulsion of your suit. It wasn't too high, but it gave you enough air time to swivel in mid air and deliver a kick straight to Chris's side. He groaned in pain, but only backpedaled from the impact. He didn't have enough time to recover from it as you landed and you returned to your aggressive stance.

This time however you didn't wait for him to attack, as you closed the distance and went after his sword. Besides the blocking, you had been deliberately holding back to prevent killing him, but you would need to be accurate to disable his means of attack. You attacked the blade itself, as you slashed sideways to prevent hitting his arm. Chris barely had enough time to block, as the impact once again made him lose ground.

This would continue as your own assault was surgical in its target. Every blow targeted to take out the sword and every blow making him stagger. You could see he was barely holding onto the blade now, his hand were slipping after the prolonged impacts and probable exhaustion. Yet, it wasn't his grip that failed on him, but the blade itself.

With one decisive slash, Erick's sword slammed into the side of Chris's blade. He had slipped in his grip so much, he didn't block you with the edge and instead the blade's side. The resounding impact knocking him on his back, as his own sword's blade shattered into pieces. In spite of this, he was still gripping onto it with what strength he had left.

"Enough Chris!" you shouted, your sword pointed to him, "this duel is over. You can-"

It was at that moment that you caught him reaching for the side button of sword. He meant to extend it and get his blade back, but you noticed it in time to react. Quickly depressing your own button, you aimed straight for his blade's hilt. With a metallic shank, Erick's blade pierced Chris's, and he recoiled back at the sparks of electrical wiring frying inside.

"NO!" Chris cried out, still reaching for the sword and trying to activate it in vain, "I can still fight damnit! WORK YOU PIECE OF SHIT!"

"It's over Chris" you calmly state, moving towards him, "you can't fight on even grounds without that thing. Please, don't make me continue."

"Then kill me already" he replied, looking over to you, "you beat me Paula...I was wrong about what I could do. I couldn't be stronger, so how can I change if I can't even win..."

+1 TRUST <Chris Bowery> - <NEW MANEUVER - Synchronized Flurry - Chris and Paula can deliver a flurry of attacks against a single target - Add +5 TRUST when attacking an enemy with Chris, one time per hunt.>

You look Chris in the eyes, seeing for yourself what can only be described as remorse and sorrow; no doubt over himself. It was alien to the normally confident and bravado infused attitude he carried in himself. But, you could still see that he wasn't hopeless, even if he wished for death he only did so for the twisted form of atonement he carried from his past encounters. In the end, it seemed like he genuinely wanted to do the right thing now, but not in a good method.

You pressed the lower button on Erick's sword and sheathed the blade back to the hilt. Chris lowered his head at this motion, and looked to the now broken hilt of his own blade. He only did so for a second, as you extended your hand out to him. He only looked at it, like a dangerous object, before you spoke up.

"You're not beaten Chris, this wasn't even a duel to begin with. I carried a great advantage over you, and even with it I had a hard time keeping up with you."

He only scoffed at your notion, before replying, "Don't patronize me, I know that already. I wanted to throw away all of my weakness today, one way or another, but I couldn't even do that..."

"Chris, you don't need to prove that to yourself anymore. Hell, you don't need to prove that to anyone anymore since we know you've changed."

"But then...why doesn't it feel like anything's changed...? The noise is still there, my memories about Haley...my mother and the fear that Erick and you will-"

He winced as he said this, pressing his hand up to his bloodied cheek. You looked it over, and it was still open but it wasn't bleeding outright like it was at first.

"I'm not your enemy, Chris, and neither is Erick" you state, still inspecting his wound, "you are stronger now because of us, because we can trust each other and stand together. We want to survive because of those ties Chris and we'll be here to help you even if it sounds like nothing has changed."

"But what if you die, what if-" he retorted, and was immediately silenced by you.

"Then we'll die and even then we'll help you Chris. You've seen how Dante talks about Carol, or how I talk about Erick; it's the impact of people in your life, not them physically, that I know will keep you moving forward."

Chris's eyes seemed to soften, and glisten a little with tears as smiled in sympathy. He hiccuped a little, before he finally took your hand and stood up, taking in a breath. It almost seemed like was going to cry again, but he quickly breathed it down.

"I know I keep saying this but, thanks Paula. Aggrh-let's get out here though, my face hurts..."

"Don't mention it" you reply, as he picks up the remains of his sword, "and hopefully that'll be fixed once we get back to Gantz. Does your brother have bandages in the car?"

<May 5th, Saturday 10:30 AM>

On Chris's instructions, there should be a small med-kit that Dante keeps for emergencies in the trunk. Apparently the sedan had additional compartment below the trunk mat that could be lifted on a latch. Also on Chris's instructions, was the way back to the car that avoided a good part of the trail and just cut through the forest itself. You'd asked him for the shortest route to keep him from losing too much blood of course.

Upon reaching for the car, you quickly found the med-kit in the trunk lying right below the mat as Chris instructed. After propping him up on the passenger seat, you applied the necessary disinfectants and gauze to keep it from getting worse. Though, it only seemed to slow down the bleeding rather than stop it as the gauze could only hold it back so much.

"That cut isn't gonna heal without some stitches I'm afraid" you state, putting away the med-kit, "I'll give Tanjeet a call, and see if he's available."

"You could just go to a clinic you know" Chris interjects, reclining a bit in his seat, "wouldn't have to go bothering him. I know he still hates me for what happened with Claire and Silvia."

"Don't worry, he's can't reject a patient" you reply, locking the trunk and looking for his phone, "or peer pressure really. Besides, this is free."

After a few second of waiting on a tone, and hopping back in the driver's seat, Tanjeet's voice came over the speaker.

"Hey Paula, I'm heading back from the university grounds in a bit. You need help with something?"

"Summer courses already started for you?" you ask, but quickly return your attention to his question, "never-mind that, yes I need some help. Chris got a cut on his face and needs some help."

There was a slight pause on Tanjeet, no doubt to process your request, before replying, "Alright, sure bring him over. Might do me some practice before the new semester starts anyways."

He cut off the call, a little more abruptly than normal, right afterwards. It was a little troubling that he was a little apprehensive, but you nonetheless made your way to his dorm.

<May 5th, Saturday 11:35 AM>

"And...15", Tanjeet declares, threading the needle on Chris's cheek back, "stay still a little longer, just need to tie the knot. Paula, hand me a bit more of the cotton to clean up here."

You'd arrived to the dorm after some bad traffic on the northern edge and after a small explanation to the guard in front, Tanjeet greet outside to bring you to his room. He still had that big medical bag from the last mission, but it was spread out on his nightstand. For the last 30 minutes, you had been helping him keep Chris stable for the stiching, and were on the last legs of it now.

"You sure you couldn't sneak in a little anesthetic?" you asked, hanging him the cotton swab.

"I would have told him 'no'", Chris chuckles, still laying down on the bed, "I honestly kind of wanted to see it myself. Even if it did hurt like a bit-aarggh"

"Told you to stay still" Tanjeet says, spreading out a bit more gauze on his wound site, "and for the record, if Paula cut you any higher it might have hit bone and then I would have needed anesthetic. Anyways, that should heal on its own after a few days."

It should have been no surprise that Tanjeet knew his craft, but you didn't expect it to go so well in a non-medical environment. While it still bothered you a little that he sounded apprehensive to help Chris, he wasn't any less eager to do the procedure once Chris was here. After using some curved scissors to cut the medical wire, Tanjeet instructed you to help with the cleanup.

"Anything unopened or unused goes back in the bag", he instructed, fetching the medical bag himself, "any used or bloodied disposables go in the plastic trashcan and anything that can get washed goes in the metal one."

"Tanjeet, thank you" Chris says, sitting up on the bed, "and I know that you don't trust me all that much still but, I'll do anything to help out in getting Maria back."

Tanjeet stopped for a moment, and looked at Chris, almost like he was inspecting him, before replying, "Yeah, you're welcome and don't worry about Maria, I got all the help I can get with the twins. You should be more worried about Carol, since Dante is your brother and all."

"But I-" Chris starts to retort, before you interrupt him. No doubt he wants to think of a way of paying back Tanjeet, but you know it'd only make things more complicated for him at this moment.

"How's about we treat you to lunch" you offer, having Tanjeet turn his head, "nothing fancy but just as a means of helping you out. Without Claire and Silvia, it must get really boring around here."

"I..." Tanjeet replied, thinking on the offer, "well, yeah...it is pretty boring. Oh, what the hell, fine let's out for lunch after we get this cleaned up."

<May 5th, Saturday 12:10 PM>

"Any reason why you chose this place?" Chris perks up, looking at the blue tarp sign reading 'Nobu', "Like, I've never heard of it before...but then again, I've never eaten at a Japanese place before.

"Silvia said it was good" Tanjeet replied, heading into the restaurant, "and she's surprisingly good at choosing restaurants if you can believe it. Heard it was also cheap, so there's that as well."

You and Chris followed in after him, and were surprised the decor was as fine as it was considering the outside looked so simple. After choosing a table near the edge of the front, you called up one of the waiters for a menu. You noticed that he was giving Chris a funny look, most likely at his stitches, but you just thanked him for the menus.

"Silvia said their regular sushi is pretty good here" Tanjeet said, looking over the menu, "might just get a big sampler box for the table if you guys are up for trying it. Then again, I could get this big pork and egg cutlet...what are you choosing Paula?"

"Huh...well" Tanjeet responds, looking at his menu again, "I'll get this sampler for the sushi for variety's sake. Nothing too big, since I want to consider your wallets here."

Chris shrugs at the comment, probably just letting him know it's no problem, while you nod in thanks for your ever decreasing leisure funds. Considering rent was coming in next Tuesday, you might be even lower in the next few weeks considering you've on off hours since the start of the week. You didn't pay it too much mind, though it was no added to that long list of worries that were plaguing your head since yesterday.

After ordering and getting your food in a surprisingly speedy time, Tanjeet actually turned to Chris as he started eating his pork cutlet. The tabled had been oddly quiet up until now, but it wasn't exactly a question you thought of answering in full.

"So, neither of you told me why exactly Paula gave you that cut. You said it was an accident, but that looks a little too clean to accidental."

"And like I said, it's not really impor-" you start a retort, but Chris raises his hand.

"It's fine Paula, I'll tell him myself. Paula and myself were fighting out in the Soapland Park trail, when she nicked the side of my face with her sword."

"Wait, fighting? Like, training or sparring or-"

"No, fighting, as in life or death fighting, with the swords. I told Paula I needed to see if I could fight and survive even with disadvantage of my suit being gone."

"What?!" Tanjeet exclaims, and quickly recoiled upon realizing how loud he was, "Err-what the hell where you thinking? What if Paula had actually killed you or if you'd gotten hurt worse than this?"

He said that last bit pointing at Chris's gauze covered stitching, to which he just calmly replied, "Then I guess Kurtis would be happier now, since there was no chance of me killing Paula there. I guess I should have just aimed for your sword, huh?"

Tanjeet's mouth was agape at how nonchalantly Chris had admitted to being fine with dying. You almost wanted to slap Chris for saying that much, but the oddest thing happened right then, as Tanjeet actually started laughing. Not a mocking laugh though, as it almost sounded nervous, before he spoke again.

"Paula, is he telling the truth?" he asked, and you nodded your head, "Christ...you're insane, like actually insane Chris...but at least you're honest about it. I can't believe you'd go that far to prove yourself though..."

"Well, Paula helped me realize that it didn't matter" Chris replied, looking at you, "in the end, all that matters is that I realized it. Anyways, let's get back to eating, our food is getting cold."

<May 5th, Saturday 1:00 PM>

After finishing up your lunch, you and Chris paid up the tab for the meals, something Tanjeet was quite grateful for. So much so that he actually thanked Chris directly for it, and Chris returned his gratitude in kind. Upon reaching the car, now with full stomachs, you looked at Chris for a question.

"So, got two options right now" you start, earning a look of curiosity from him, "do you want to talk with Kurtis and get that issue of noise sorted out. Or do you want to head home if you think it'd be better to resolve this in the room?"

Chris thought for a moment before he answered, looking a little worried, "I know Kurtis isn't gonna let this go even if you're there with me, considering how I acted. Personally, I'd rather wait until I have my suit back before talking to him."

It was a surprisingly fearful response from him, but you were well aware of what could happen if you left this to chance. Nodding your head, you made for Bowery's mansion, making sure that everyone was strapped in before leaving.

<May 5th, Saturday 1:45 PM>

The drive there was more lively than you expected, as Tanjeet was actually interacting with Chris. Mostly, it was about video games, so you couldn't really interject yourself into the conversation since you knew next to nothing on the subject. You never thought of Tanjeet as a gamer, but then again neither had you of Silvia. Though, as you reached the mansion, Tanjeet asked a peculiar question.

"Mind if I stay over for the weekend? I know I'm inviting myself but-"

"Hey it's fine" Chris replies, sounding genuinely happy, "we've got like 3 spare bedrooms, so we can just bring over your stuff for it."

It almost sounded friendly, considering Tanjeet's own aversion towards Chris. Maybe he really was so bored that he was willing to take the chance with him. As you entered the mansion's gates, the thought faded as a call from Luis's number came through, and you listened intently.

"Paula, I need you stay calm for what I'm about to tell you. Rick is heading up a small task force to bring you in for questioning under the supervision of the FBI."

Time seemed to stop, as you almost lost attention of the road as you entered Bowery's mansion. Granted, Luis hadn't said why they were looking for you, but you could assume it had to do with Allie Pierce again. Steeling your focus, you kept your eyes on the road and your ears on your phone.

"They're going to leave the station at 5:00 PM, so you have about 3 or so hours to get home right now. I'll be there to pick you up, but please be there when I get there, ok?"

'2 hours, but if they leave at 5-' your thought is interrupted as Luis's voice continues.

"Gather anything you might need for a week stay, I'll be there to pick you up at 4:00 PM sharp. I've got a friend in Alexandria that can help you, but I'd rather take the fall for this than you; because I know what these FBI types will do to you to get a confession."

Luis's call is cut as abruptly as it began, as you feel a poke on your ribs from your right side. You shake yourself awake for a moment, as you stare at Chris and the subsequent front of the mansion you slowly were sliding off from.

"Hey Paula, aren't you gonna park it in the back?" he asks, looking somewhat worried at your expression.

You hadn't noticed you were staring at him somewhat wide eyed, something you shook off as you answered, "Sorry guys, I got an emergency to respond to right now so I can't stay and chat. Give your regards to your brother on my part Chris."

"Oh, ok then" Chris replied, somewhat disappointed, "well, we'll be seeing you then Paula. Good luck on what you have to do."

Tanjeet and Chris exited the car and waved you off as your rounded the entrance. You almost wished you could just run down their mansion gate, but you were forced to wait the extra seconds for it to open. Once you were outside though, you made it no habit of going a few miles over the speed limit heading home.

'I'm sorry Erick...I messed up somewhere.'

<May 5th, Saturday 2:30 PM>

You made a slight detour to a payphone in a nearby metro station, to call up Kurtis to ask on what to do in this situation. He only replied back that taking unlicensed transportation and hiding it out was probably your safest bet. He even suggested staying with him as well, but you knew that if you did, it could potentially lead the FBI to Allie's location since you were going around a recognized vehicle.

After thanking him for the advice, and praying the Luis's plan involved these after getting out of your home, you quickly made your way back again. Avoiding traffic had been the easy part, as you only had to but in and the majority of DC was more than kind, or afraid, to oblige. In all honesty, it was the police that made you more worried at this moment, though you also prayed that they didn't know you were in this vehicle yet either.

You parked Dante's car near one of the adjacent apartments, no doubt it wouldn't attract attention besides the towing line. After making it to your home, you quickly looked around for a bag or suitcase large enough to carry your effects for the time. You only had an hour and a half left before Luis arrived, which you hoped was going to be enough.

'We can turn ourselves in next week, tell them we were traveling and then speak to feds afterwards. Right now...I gotta make some sacrifices.'

<BARE SUCCESS> -1 WIL, +1 INT

<May 5th, Saturday 4:15 PM>

Packing up to leave was easy, as it was mostly just a quick change of clothes, your bathroom utensils and essential electronics like Erick's laptop. This took about thirty minutes to finish, though you made sure to unplug the Gantz: LIVE USB from the laptop and stuffed it inside of your dufflebag. Most of the Gantz weapons were in there already, including the large net gun from Erick's stash.

The hard part came when you had to hid any evidence or images that could pin further blame on Erick. There were several dozens of handwritten letters you gave Erick in the mornings when you left for work, which you hid beneath carpet of closet; spreading them out well enough that it was mostly flat. Anything too big, like a copy of Carol's poster for Gantz or any of Erick's small pamphlets from work with his signatures were hidden in the dufflebag.

'I just hope Luis doesn't ask too many questions...' you think, placing the last of the evidence in the bag, 'if he even thinks about opening up the bag-"

There was a loud knock on the door, followed by a familiar voice on the other side, "Paula! Open, up, we have to go and we have to go now!"

You didn't hesitate but still made sure that it was Luis outside through the porthole in your door. True enough, it was him and he was alone out there, and you slowly chided yourself for starting to be as paranoid as Allie. Upon opening the door, you saw Luis was somewhat red and looked almost exhausted.

"Sorry, I parked my car a few blocks down so they won't see us" he said, catching his breath, "anyways, get your bags. I'll help you in getting them out of here."

"Right" you replied, leading the way back to your room, "let me take the black one out myself, it's got Erick's electronics in there so I want to be careful carrying it. You can help with the-"

You had made it almost halfway into the bedroom, when you felt an odd sensation on your arms. It came too quick for you to react, as you suddenly felt the ground give out under you and fell face first to the wooden floor. In one swift motion, your arms were stretched back and you felt metallic clicks around your wrists.

'Wait...Luis...why...?'

"I'm sorry Paula" Luis spoke, almost apologetically, before you heard an all too familiar radio buzz, "target apprehended, begin phase 2. Operatives, you're free to proceed."

The pure shock of the moment caused your brain and part of the world to pause as suddenly you heard the sound of glass shattering around you. About two or three armed FBI operatives, fully armored and wielding shotguns and assault rifles entered your room. It all happened in the span of a few seconds, and you were still too shocked to move. That was, until you heard a familiar voice enter through your front door.

"Move in people, clean your sights and watch your sides" Rick's voice entered your home, and quickly moved to your room, "Good afternoon, Ms. Torres."

"Luis!" you shout, moving your head away from Rick, "What the hell is the meaning of this?! You said that we were-"

"Quiet!" one of the operatives commands, look for an excuse to hit you with the butt of their rifle, "this isn't an arrest, so you will comply with the jurisdiction of the FBI under article-"

"Hold on there gentlemen, let's not be too hasty now" Ricks interrupts, like a nauseating showman, "let's not forget who planned this investigation to begin with. So long as she's an officer of my precinct, I still have to withhold custody until I hand her over outside."

There was a frustrated growl from the operative, who just stepped back in line with the others. Given that they were still on standby, it looked like Rick's jurisdiction was respected here above them. How the hell he managed to do this was a complete anomaly to you.

"But about Luis, don't worry about him" Rick continues, looking down on you, "he was investigating you since you left for your break. Or did your really think an officer with ties to a suspected criminal and a home grown terrorist was going to just go unnoticed during a longstanding absence from work?"

"Is this true...?" you asked, ignoring Ricks previous points, but with disbelief in your voice.

"Oh don't look at him for answers Paula" Rick speaks up, squatting down to your level, "he was more of a tracking hound for me than anything else. A noble member of the force, and who could see things our way."

"I had to do it Paula" Luis adds, still holding onto your arms, "it was either this or be implicated for abetting a homeland security issue. I have a family to feed, and I'm sorry to say that I can't let that go down, even for you."

"How can you live with yourself-" you start, anger rising from the growing pit of betrayal in your stomach.

"Don't beat yourself up over it Luis" Rick interrupts, stamping his foot forward, "in a couple of months, you'll pat yourself on the back over a job well done. Anyways, we have a job to get done now."

You were positively fuming at Rick, yet with all of the built up anger in your stomach, there was something keeping you from acting yet. Luis had betrayed you, for so many weeks you thought of him as a friend and colleague, only to seem him fall to Rick's payroll. There was no way this could be legal, yet here were the FBI operatives. It all seemed to perfect to be true, and Rick's next order was the breaking point.

"Search the apartment, rip it apart if you have to, and be sure to present any evidence forward to us before you take it back to the bureau. You can take her away Luis."

You suddenly felt the ground again give way around you, and you found footing again as Luis's arms stood you up. At this position, you could see the operatives begin their search, the first two going after the suitcase you prepared, and the other two going after the-

It looks like Paula will have to abandon the life of law enforcement now. Which is fine, the entire gantz crew is going to need to go underground sooner or later. I have no doubt that the more experienced teams in the states have already done so.
Hell, maybe there's even some deeper connection between the teams. A network of veterans established to make life - and living - easier for the people stuck in the game that live long enough to face the consequences of disappearing just about every week.

<SUCCESS>

There was a sound much like bomb going off in the room, yet only you could hear it. It deafened you to everything for what seemed like several minutes, as the movement in even the air began to slow down. You remembered this feeling, it was there when you killed the rock alien, it was there when you saw Erick die, and it was there in the first mission. Everything faded, as you just saw red.

With the sheer force of your suit, you immediately knocked back Luis several feet as you broke your handcuffs's chain link. In that same motion, you grabbed the hilt of Erick's sword but only moved with it concealed forward. It would take the operatives just one moment to react to what had happened, but in that moment you knew everything would be already over. Rick was the first to notice you, and the first to die.

On your final step forward, you activated the sword and swung its blade in an arch that would have only sliced Rick. Rick himself had no time to react, yet quickly saw that the sword was growing as it slashed him in half. The other operatives in the room saw it as well, as the sword soon grew to encompass nearly the full length of the room, and you just kept the button pressed. Throughout this, your suit bulged with musculature to cut into the very walls of your apartment.

Their bodies were cut in two, either at the midsection or at the necks, and each coated the wall like cans of red, visceral spraypaint. Their bodies were splayed about the room, no doubt broken apart from the sheer impact of your slash. That room, where you once woke Erick awake with sweet greeting cards was now coated with the blood of men you would have once called your colleagues.

You didn't let yourself breath for a moment however, as you retracted the blade from the left wall and quickly made for the hallway. There, you found Luis, still trying to get up from you knocking him down and now trying to crawl away. You closed the distance quickly. If he screamed when you off his head, you didn't hear it, only now the sound of what you could only describe as a ringing in your ears.

As it subsided, you began to take in a breath and found it wasn't reaching your lungs. There were tears in your eyes, but you didn't know what to feel, just an overwhelming rush of emotions overtook you. The ringing was now subsiding, as the realization of the last fifteen second finally hit you.

'...Everyone...the police...' the thoughts invaded your head, as you quickly made for the bedroom, 'oh god...it's...all here. Everyone is...'

You retched up your lunch on the floor, seeing the spectacle you had caused. In your mind, you knew this was the end. There was no coming back from this, your career, your life as a person, everything was over. It was then that the ringing came back now much louder and you felt a sensation on your head, as a multicolored laser began to cut you apart, slab by slab as you moved for the dufflebag.
