As the name implies, this is a quest where you'll be playing a thief, and stealing everything not nailed down. And some things that are. You're staying in the city of your birth, Aquilla. The City of Rain. Where you'll be making your living as a thief and trying to get by as best as possible.

>The Rules
I will write up the life of our young thief Ailas, a half elf who has just truly begun his career as a thief. You will be given prompts to direct him. Some things will require a dice roll to determine success or failure or something else entirely. Write In's are absolutely encouraged but I reserve the right to torpedo anything.

The voting period will last around 15 minutes or more after the prompts are given. I will then announce the voting closed and write up the chosen response.

Mornings in Aquilla are normally quite pleasant. It rains overnight often, so the morning dew is a nice sight and an even nicer smell compared to the smog of factories or the general stench of the lower city. You find yourself by the singular window in the apartment on clear mornings like this. Watching the people on the street go about their daily business while you take in your breakfast. And today is no different.

But it certainly feels different. You've taken the first steps to the big time, as they say. Making nice with contacts like Oliver and Margot is invaluable. And you'll need all the help you can get, if you are to escape the jaws of poverty. Or even more importantly, the jaws of mediocrity. If this is to be your life's work, you want to be better than good. You want to be great.

Looking around the apartment, you're struck by how tiny it is for the first time. When you and Shalana started to make enough to afford this place you were ecstatic to have a roof over your heads. Now you just feel like it's so small you'd go insane if you had to sit in this room for more than a couple hours. There's nothing but a couple of beds, and a single dresser for clothing. And you're lucky there's a bathroom. Shalana's side of the room is more lived in. Books piled up, various sketches of hers on the wall.

You leave no trace, which is likely a side effect of your work. Shrugging, you pop the last bite of breakfast into your mouth and stand up. There's still plenty to be done. You're far behind on your goal. Shalana exits the bathroom, looking ready for the day. "Oh, looks like we're leaving at the same time. You're usually still asleep by now."

That's right, she must be on her way to work. "There's not much I can do without the cover of night, but that's no reason to sit on my ass all day."

"I like your enthusiasm, brother." She prepares her key to the apartment, then stops, struck by an idea. "Well, want to walk together? I just realized we work so often that we never just take a walk anymore."

It's true. You both used to just roam all over the city. Sometimes for fun, sometimes to find safe places to stay for the night. You do somewhat miss the simplicity of it. "Okay then, I'll walk you to work. Just like old times eh?"

She chuckles in a short a nearly snorting manner. "Old times? Don't go getting old on me yet Ailas. Though I admit, it feels like a lifetime ago. Even though not much has changed."

You both share a comfortable silence as you exit the building, passing the excuse for a land lord at the bottom of the stairs on your way out. As long as everyone pays up on time, he doesn't care. Your boots splash in shallow puddles every now and again as you make your way through the low end of town you call home. Despite the quality of living, there's still life here. Shops are opening up for there daily business. Workers are heading out for the day, same as your sister.

When Shalana landed this job, you wanted to stop her. You've heard of the kinds of work conditions some of these factories have. Not to mention the accidents. Even people that survive those kinds of things are never the same. You wouldn't know what to do with yourself if something like that happened to her. She has too much potential to be snuffed out, or crippled working some menial job for coppers.

"Ailas? You're looking a bit intense there." Shalana waves her hand in front of your face.

"Oh. Sorry. Deep in thought." You'll refrain from telling her you were agonizing over her only means of work. "So, how has the job been treating you lately?"

She just sighs, gripping her bag at her side a little tighter. "It's as good as it's gonna get. It's hard work, doesn't pay much. But at I least I have a job. Our foreman, Isabella, she makes things easier on us."

Pretty sure she's mentioned this woman before. "Yes, I remember the name. I'll have to thank her for taking such good care of my sister. I know this job can be dangerous."

Shalana playfully bumps into you. "Not as dangerous as yours. At least I can do my work while being seen. You don't have to worry about me."

She says that, but you both know. Neither of you will ever stop. You are both all you have. But things will get better. When you arrive at you sister's workplace, she gives you a hug and watch her head inside. She's greeted by a woman in a protective jumpsuit, probably her foreman. And then you're off again. You don't know the hours that Oliver keeps, but you'd like to line up your next job. This city doesn't wait for anybody.

When you arrive at the Sleeping Giant. It's nearly the opposite of the raucous circus from last night. You stop to observe the open and closed sign but you notice there isn't one. Pushing the door open, you're met with a loud squeak, and the tired eyes of Oliver. Wiping down tables and setting chairs upright on the table. "Oh! My new best customer. Come in, come in. I was just closing up for the day."

"It's nearly 7 in the morning." You reply flatly.

He just shrugs. "I assume you're looking for job opportunities?"

You nod and he makes his way behind the counter. "Let me think, I believe there's two jobs that would suit your skills. Of course, both clients require something taken." He pours himself a drink from an unlabeled bottle under the counter before continuing. "The first, a gang leader wants another gangs symbol of pride stolen. They take these things seriously. Could spell the end for the rival leader. And secondly, a client wants a specific item stolen before it reaches the largest bank in Aquilla. And it's on a moving convoy."

While you think he takes a large gulp of the red liquid. "These are time sensitive so you gotta pick one, and fast."

"I'm not doing any work for the gangs. I'll take the convoy job." You may have said that a bit too fast. But you mean it. You decided you wouldn't be a part of what they do, and you mean it. Even by proxy.

Oliver seems to take it in stride. "Okay then, allow me to fill you in." He plops down on a barstool and swishes around his liquid breakfast. "Our client wants a certain item delivered to them. The problem being that this particular item is a part of a set being delivered to one of the largest banks in the whole city. A ring, here's a photo to be certain you get the right one."

He passes it over to you, and the ring doesn't strike you as especially unique. Definitely of custom make, though. "Something so small is easy enough, but I'll need to know everything you have on this convoy." And you'll keep the fact that you've never stolen anything from a moving platform before to yourself.

"Well, there's three armored wagons. And the one in the center will be holding all of the valuables. At least two watchmen to each wagon. Maybe more. Expect your target to be under the close watch of a captain." After contemplating it, Oliver shrugs and downs the rest of his drink. Shivering as he swallows the liquid and lightly pounding his fist on his chest. "They'll be coming through to the bank tonight. And the closer they get, the greater the Watch presence will be.

You take a seat as you think on your options. You'll need to wait until nightfall, but what really matters in this job is speed, and how you deal with the captain. You don't know what to expect from them. But you know they're several leagues above the grunts. And you're not ashamed to acknowledge they'd probably wipe the floor with you in a straight fight.

"I'll arrange for the wagons to encounter a short distraction. Use it to your advantage." He pours another cup full of his strange moonshine. "I'd ere on the side of caution with this one. Could get dangerous very quickly."

It's all the same to you. Your work comes packaged with risk. You leave the bar and spend the day ensuring you're ready. You get some extra rest, and fit your new gear to your armor. When night falls, you sit relaxed leaning on a chimney overlooking the path of the convoy. Now you're just waiting on this distraction. Soon, you see your target, three wagons. Very clearly armored and guarded by alert Watchmen.

Watching them roll, you start to get a little anxious right before an old man with a run down carriage conveniently decides to cross the intersection in front of them. The convoy comes screeching to a halt to avoid a collision, and you climb down to ready yourself. The old man does a great job pretending to fall all over himself, failing to get his carriage out of the damn way.

Seeing your opportunity when the guards in the rear wagon get up to assist, you dash across the ground and slide under the wagon. How you go about this next step could make or break this run. The captain remains inside the wagon, being smart enough to not exit for anything until they reach their destination.

Okay, gonna just get out ahead of this one. You're on a city street devoid of plant life, let alone rocks. Even if you weren't that wouldn't be enough to make the captain exit the wagon.

I'm gonna assume the captain is paranoid and taking precautions. If that's the case he'll send somebody else to investigate a suspicious noise.

The real problem would be any of them noticing we get on the wagon, or that by proxy the guards get back and the captain isn't there, so we can't knock him out and just expect them to not notice. Though either way we'll be getting on a wagon where all of the guards are gonna come back on very, very shortly.

We're carrying a prybar. We should damage the wheels so the wagons crash. I doubt we'll be able to separate the wagons themselves, unless the linking mechanism is classic. In which case, we should attempt damaging the wheels and loosing whatever links the wagons together. My thinking is even if it's just a slight crash, the captain will want to directly investigate the damage himself.

This would be a write-in btw. The axles might be worth a trying to loosen. The heaver the wagons the easier they tumble, and even toughened up mechanisms shouldn't be totally immune to sabotage.

Out of the options I've given you, your could use a flashbomb to give yourself the advantage but then you'd alert the other watchmen. You could surprise him without using it, but then you'd only have the element of surprise. Making it more difficult to over power or snatch it from him. Not to mention that you just know that it's in the wagon, you don't know exactly where it is. Finally, you could attempt to make him exit the wagon on your own somehow, You do have a tool that could help you do this, easily.. But I already explained why your attempt wouldn't have worked.

We could toss them in the wagon. Then we get to jump into a smoky wagon. And try to lockpick through the whiteout. And all the guards will be alerted.

Or throw them down a sidestreet, with the expectation that the sudden smoke will make them think attackers are forming up from behind it so we sneak in that way. 50/50.

The idea was since we've already slid under the wagon itself we're in the position to silent loosen some bolts with our prybar, and trying to check the wagon's connections to each other, but I see your point. I do like scaring the horses and causing them to bolt, since presumably one of those guards now helping our distraction was actually the driver. Driverless scared horses are p good at being a nuisance.

Also, if the horses are scared they're taking all three wagons with them. We'd better hold on tight, is all.

Since you obviously didn't bother reading the other thread, the only other object that would work in this situation, given the fact QM already told us about half our inventory in the given choices, was either the smoke bomb or grappling hook. Ok so first off, I gotta say I made a mistake in not posting your current inventory since the pastebin hasn't been updated yet. Sorry about that. Secondly, after going through what everyone had to say, I decided to just go with a combination of the best ideas suggested. So you'll be unhooking the horses from the wagon, and scaring them with a flashbomb to cause a large distraction.

You had a while to think on your options while waiting for the convoy to arrive. You agonized over the details until you realized, often the simplest solution is for the best. Cause enough of a distraction for the captain to leave the wagon unguarded just for a moment. A moment is all you need. Even if you get seen after retrieving the ring, you know how to make a getaway.

So it's under the captains feet that you make your move. Using your pry-bar, you unhook the metal pin keeping the horses attached to the wagon. It pops off with a metal snap. But no one moves to investigate. Nearly holding your breath. You ready yourself to move quickly and quietly. You produce a flashbomb from you belt and depress the metal button up top and hear metallic click from the device as light begins to pulses from the with it's glass housing.

In one motion, you roll it directly in front of the horses and close your eyes. The flash nearly penetrates you eyelids but it goes off with much of a sound, you hear only glass shattering, and of course the horses panicked cries. They break their remaining bonds in the skittish attempt to flee and the other watchmen leave their posts to wrangle the animals. Then you hear footsteps rushing inside the wagon.

Watching the ground in front of you closely, you see a pair of finely polished boots exit and you hear someone barking orders. He hasn't moved far, but he has turned his back. So now it's your turn. Sliding out from underneath your hiding place. You step onto the wagon and find a multitude of perfectly rectangular lockboxes, built into the interior. Though you notice a select few cordoned off. Special treatment perhaps? Your target must be in there.

In a flash, you whip out your picks and get to work.

You're on top of your game today. You manage to get through multiple boxes after finding the ring. You dump the contents into your bag each time, not bothering to check each and every item since you simply don't have the time. You slip your picks away and peek outside. The watchmen have wrangled the panicky animals. And are getting back to work. And the captain stands very close by watching them.

He also seems to be examining a piece of glass from your flashbomb. He's a suspicious one. It's time you take you leave. If you can just get out of the street without being seen, this'll be your cleanest run yet. You quickly step across the cobblestone, attempting to make as little sound as possible while you do so.

So far so good. Once you're out of the street, you're home free.

Just as your about to make your exit. One of the horses bucks and knocks one of the watchmen flat on his ass. Which makes the rest of the turn and, well, they spotted you. They all scramble to apprehend you and you immediately book it to avoid getting shot. Which is good, since the captain nearly takes you head off before you get into the alley. The shards of brick spraying over you as he barely misses.

Guess a clean run wasn't in the cards. You take off running to round the corner, the last thing you want to do is give your pursuers a clear line of sight. You're confident in your running, but you can gear fast footfalls behind you. You're going to have to lose them somehow. There's an alley you're familiar with up ahead. A dead end, but you can cut through the window of a business nearby. That will slow down their pursuit considerably.

There's also another route up ahead with a loose sewer grate. You promised Shalana you wouldn't use the sewers as a means of escape unless absolutely necessary after last time. The smell stuck to your gear and it stank up the apartment for a week. But it would be good for shaking them off. Tough you'd need to be careful, you don't know the underground as well as the surface.

Or perhaps the rooftops would be a better choice? No. You'd be far too exposed. You could lose them on one of the busier streets, there's a marketplace nearby. They'd never be able to find you in those crowds.

Perhaps looking for a place we can lay low or a crowd after that which we can blend in to, might not be as good as the marketplace crowd but putting distance between us and them as soon as we can seems ideal.

Don't slow down. They're dealing with a chaotic situation. They still need to get those horses under control and make sure we're the only assailant. For all they know, this could be a terror attack. We're fast and we can lose them if we don't hesitate for a second.

In the end, you decide bottle-necking them through some enclosed spaces would be for the best. You turn and head straight for the dead end and throw a smoke capsule after ripping the cord from it. It pops and spreads white smoke all over the end of the alley. Which might've worked in your favor more than you anticipated as you hear bullets whiz past you in the smoke.

While being obscured, you smash open the window with your blackjack and reach inside to unlatch it. No time to waste with your pry-bar. You tumble inside and roll to your feet, ignoring the stunned silence of the store owner and pushing past his customers into the next building across the street. This time, a butcher. Who takes one look at you and waves his cleaver at you, screeching for you to get out of his shop.

Avoiding the angry butcher, you hop over his counter and run through his cold storage in the back and burst out into another alleyway. You should be close now. Taking down your mask and hood, you shift your bag and hide your tools to ry and appear as normal as possible. It's a bit of a risk if they recognize you with your mask down but it's worth it.

You arrive in the marketplace and attempt to look as natural as possible. Examining market stalls and pretending to consider a purchase every now and again. You hear the watch nearby stomping around. But they don't seem to be coming towards you, looks like you can start making your way out of here. Albeit slowly, now you just have to slip away unseen.

Thinking it's safe to move, you begin to slowly make your way away from the crowds. Still pretending to browse as to not rouse suspicion. But then you hear the footsteps of what is obviously a group of watchmen. You keep your wits about you. You don't react when you hear them or when they begin coming closer. You even keep up the act by buying up the last piece of fresh produce from the vendor.

Biting into an apple, you allow yourself to peek at the watchmen only after they've passed you. Going searching for the thief that eluded them. And in this job, you either win or you lose. No in between.

With a bag full of loot, and a spring in your step. You head back to Oliver first to turn over the ring, the whole point of the job. When you arrive at the bar, it's as lively as last night. And you even recognize quite a few of the patrons from then as well. He must have plenty of regulars. Oliver seems a bit bored, though still busy when you approach. Though he perks up when he sees you. "Ah, just the man I was hoping to see. Did it go well?"

"About as well as possible." You admit. "Nearly got away clean but I had to think on my feet." You hand him the shiny silver ring and he examines it quickly, nodding his head once he's confirmed it's the right one.

The bartender just laughs. "But thinking on your feet is what people like you do best! And you proved that today. Your payment." He hands you the money and it very quickly goes back into your bag for safekeeping. "Now, there's no need to run back out right this second. Why don't you put your feet up. Relax for a bit. Usually, you prefer to keep your sense sharp. The last thing you need is to get dizzy while trying to climb or slip off of a roof or burp while trying to creep around some locked up building. But you're off the clock now. "Fine, I could use a stiff drink after that."

Oliver grins stepping back as he gestures to all of his bottles on display. "That's what I like to hear! Alright now, what would you like? I can recommend basically any of our beers but the dwarves have us beat on that front. My personal favorite is the dark stout, nice gut punch of a drink. And well, if you've got a more selective palate. You can't go wrong with Rozan wine, they practically invented the stuff."

The man clearly has enthusiasm for alcohol. "For now all just take something on the light side. Rather not go home drunk with this much... baggage on me."

"Understood, I've got just the thing for you then." Oliver turns and waves a finger around, trying to pick out a bottle. "Ah! There you are. Elydwyn Spring. Good stuff. One of the elvish people's few attempts at brewing." He pours you a glass of the clear, and slightly fizzing liquid in a short and squat glass accompanied by a small amount of ice.

You sip and the kick in this is apparent, but he was right when he called it refreshing. Like a nice drink of cold water in the summer. You needed that after all the running you did. "It's quite good. Perhaps it'll be my usual."

The bar tender seems pleased with your reaction. "Another satisfied customer! Now, anything else I can help you with?"

It dawns on you that you have an information broker standing in front of you. "Actually, there was something I wanted to ask you."

The tattooed man has a laugh at his own cheekiness. Despite his laid back demeanor, he's serious. You may want to buy some info from him. "Well, I have a question I'm sure you can answer for free. I'm curious about the fence. Margot."

He raises an eyebrow but otherwise barely reacts. "Really? How so?"

You shrug. "Her name. Strange one for an elf that wasn't adopted by a human family. I know how attached my people get to their names."

Oliver seem to think something over before speaking. "Honestly, that's not really my story to tell. And I wouldn't recommend you askin' her about it on a whim. She's a forgiving woman, but she likes her privacy."

Is that so? Then perhaps you got off light when you brought it up at your first meeting.

"You have to be if you want to make any money. I'm looking for other projects, any place with enough valuables. I'm not picky." Mostly because you need all the money you can get.

Oliver thinks on it for a moment and snaps his fingers. "There's a certain house, that ought to be empty on a coming night. And they may or may not have more money than they know what to do with. Seeing how this isn't related to a job, it'll cost. But since your the up and comer, I'll sell you this opportunity for 800."

You shrug. "I wasn't expecting anything for free. But beyond that, I'm looking to expand my skills, do you think you could help with that?"

That piques his interest in a way that nothing before that did. "Really? Well, they don't exactly teach you set of skills in schools, as I'm sure you know. I have some freelancer contacts. Give me a little time and let me see what I can dig up."

"Freelancers? I thought they had their own methods of info gathering. Did everything through their guild." Even you find that a bit strange. They usually like to stay within their own bubble.

"Sure, but they love their independents. You know, little birds. Deniability and all that." Oliver can't be that much older than you, but he seems like he's been in this business for decades. Not that you'd complain about having such a reliable contact.

Having finished your drink, you have no more reason to dawdle. You rise to exit, and-

Do we trust him enough with that form of leverage? We've only known him for three conversations over two and a half days.
I want Shalana to succeed to, but if it ties her to our obvious dirtiness through an information broker that's something someone else can use against both of us.

Of course, I say this without knowing how bureaucratically deep and pettily competitive the Tower of Magi is. In which case, we'll inevitably need to help her. Oliver's contact guarantees at least one those magi are not clean, which is as expected.

Mentioning family to any of these people, in any of these places where someone may be listening more intently, is very incautious. Oliver's a man who can connect a thief to multiple people who would've otherwise resorted to murder, or paying for it, to get what they want. None of our missions from him have had restrictions of any sort. It's very telling of his clientele.

Like us, he's a dangerous criminal out for himself. Everything he has said is carefully constructed. If he ever asks directly about family without us bringing it up, that means he'll have gone out of his way to find out about us and Shalana. Or he did that already and mentioning the Tower of Magi is his BAIT.

What he's proven is resourcefulness and fulfilling the end of a bargain. We should ask about his contact, but be very careful not to volunteer information about getting someone in. We have to be clever to find indirect means to help her, or it's inevitable that we'll get blindsided by someone playing only slightly dirtier than us. And Oliver's not stupid. We're ambitious for a reason. If he thinks it's just hubris, that's for the best.

Involving her without consent would be betrayal. I get the sense she is forgiving, we're family, and stealing has gotten us a roof. But there are limits to these feelings.

We pointedly haven't told anybody else. Not the person selling us information, or the person selling us tools. We don't own a shop, so distance could serve us well. It's good that the information broker we've been showing our face to sees our potential profitability for him.

When we save up for a better life, we'll need to be more careful. In a city that doesn't rest for anybody, a better life won't be more secure if we aren't proactive about it. And we'll have to figure out something legitimate to front ourselves as if anybody in the neighborhood we buy into starts getting curious about how two half-elves, one of which either currently or previously worked in a factory, saved up enough income to get there in the first place.

Of course, you know what the real question is. "How long is this play?"

"You'll have a couple hours, which might not be enough. The manor is quite large. And they've the backing of a real security group. Not to mention the automatic measures built into the house. Nothing deadly, but it will definitely reveal your presence." He pauses to peer through the bottom of a polished glass. "Old man Gray made his money in the mining business. Perhaps you could find something truly unique among their wealth?"

Suppose you'll find out. "Is that all? Vulnerabilities? Guard numbers?"

"I was getting to that. In terms of bodies, you should see around a dozen men. Maybe more posted in areas they want especially well protected. In terms of weak points, there's a sunroof that could serve as an entry should you get on the roof. And supposedly, the basement has a connection to the old sewers. That's the only tidbit I'm not sure of though, so don't bet on it." He rattles all of that off from memory, making you wonder when he has the time to go over these things.

You make it to Margot's shop rather quickly, and she's behind the counter reading when you enter. Causing the bell above the door to catch her attention. "Oh, hello Ailas. I trust your night has gone well, do you have some items you'd like to exchange?"

Nodding, you unzip your pack and dump the contents on the counter. Margot closes her shop with the push of a button, like last time and gets to work appraising what you've brought to her. There's many smaller items this time. A lot of jewelry. "Oh my, quite a few collector's items this time. There's even a completed set here. I can exchange this for 3200.

Naturally, you accept and decide to pay a visit to Hot Shot before turning in for the night. The demonic man greets you with the same impassivity as last time, and the old dwarf shows you the tools of the trade.

You can not. Magic knowledge isn't anywhere near that common. One of the main issues for a magician without connections is just learning. Nearly all magicians (we'll get into the different kinds and what they mean later) have a master/apprentice system. Knowledge is passed down directly, and what's written down is very well guarded.

I kinda see caltrops as a cheaper but better assurance of not being perused after a smoke or flash. Pretty easy to just shoot a guy throwing caltrops behind him, smoke or recovering from blindness not so much, so they're things for tight place and path denial. We should get some in the future for combination potential, since they're so cheap.

But we should be careful where we use gear. We don't want our plans relying on them too much for a lot of reasons, not all just monetary.

After some browsing and coin counting, you settle on more flashbombs, a new dagger, armor inserts, and a brand new lockpick kit. The flashbomb was so useful in your last job that you definitely want some more on your belt for the future. A weapon more deadly than your blackjack was eventually going to be a necessity. You're not an assassin, but you won't just lay down and die if worst comes to worst.

Then there's the new kit. You had broken a couple of picks from the old one, and it was getting time to upgrade anyhow. You think this is perfect timing with your next job. After all, more money also means better security. This kit has neatly machined tools and even a few tools that were missing from the standard one. Is it strange that you're looking forward to using it? You'll just keep that to yourself.

As you put away your purchases, the old dwarf hides the money he just made off of you and looks you up and down again. "Y'know how to put install those yerself?"

You look at the angular plates and shrug. "I'm sure I can manage."

He just sighs and gestures over to another, larger workbench. "Set her down over there and strip off your top layer and I'll do it for ya. No installation fees this time." He chuckles in a raspy voice at his own attempt at humor.

At first, you consider just declining and going home, but if he's offering, you'd rather an expert do it since this is supposed to be insurance against a bullet or two. Accepting, you take off the outer layer of your padded armor, keeping your face masked, and allow him to set to work on it. He works quickly, and shows a true mark of skill. You once hear that the real measure of skill was how effortless the practitioner makes it seem.

Of so, than he is quite the master. Beldan assists him every now and again, handing him tools or the like. The demon and the dwarf work together quite well. Most of the time, Beldan offers up whatever he needs without him even saying what that is.

When the dwarf speaks again, it's been so long that he nearly startles you. "Y'know, folk like you tend to be light shoppers. And you've dropped quite a bit of coin. Planning to fleece the palace are you?"

When the dwarf finishes up, your armor looks good as new, gave it cleaning but it's still as inconspicuous as ever. And it feels much sturdier. You're sure this can stop a bullet or two. But it's mean to be a just in case kind of thing, let's keep it that way. You put your gear back on and even though you just had it in your hands, you're struck by how light it is. "This is good work. Mr..."

"Orsir, and it's nothin. It'll serve it's purpose. If you take a round, come back here and I'll repair the plate, or replace it if need be." Orsir turns and you note for the first time that his legs are prosthetic, and not the good kind either. Metal shafts that keep him upright with the help of a cane. No wonder he has Beldan do everything for him.

"I'll remember that. Thank you." As you exit the store, Beldan bids you a good night in a clear voice before closing the doors behind you and locking up. You do believe that's the first time he spoke to you directly. The walk home is pleasant as you aren't soaked by rain this time. It gives you time to reflect on the rapidly expanding scope of your work. If you can do jobs like the one you're planning regularly, than you could afford to think much bigger.

Even then, you can't get complacent. The better your place in society, the more questions are asked. You'd be a fool if you thought two half-elves could live in a nice apartment and nobody ask about your work or history. You may have to come up worth some very convincing lies. But it's not worth concerning yourself over right now. All that matters right now, is reaching your goal.

When you arrive at the apartment, Shalana's soft snore greets you. Good thing you're used to moving quietly. You place the remaining money back under the floor, confident that you can replace all that you've invested. The Gray Manor will be your largest run yet. You should be nervous, or worried in the slightest. But all you feel is anticipation. For a challenge to be bested.

I've always been partial to the phantom thief type. Leaving a calling card and all that. There's just something so enjoyable about that cockiness.

Typically? It depends on what you stole and what other crimes you committed along the way. Most often it will see you get jail time. But it could be worse if you killed someone along the way. Now, things will probably change if you obtain some kind of huge rep. Authorities might want to execute you to make an example.

So many good historical examples we could use even if we don't wanna be original.

I'm worried about leaving too much of anything behind when we don't know how in depth magic can get but, a calling card of sorts could get pretty fun if we wanna be inventive. We don't even have to settle on one idea, too. Could make it look like a cabal of new thieves are expanding in the city, too.

I would generally think that he wouldn't kill because it would cause too much attention to be brought his way. In other words he wouldn't kill for practical reasons, not moral reasons

I'll be unnecessarily long winded with this but I think it depends on the payoff. Like anon said above. A thief who kills is just a serial killer, or opportunist murderer of necessity. There's a pretty big difference between being a thief and an assassin or a mercenary, too. Nobody's broached the subject of using our particular set of skills as a hitman. Though Oliver hinted at other people who would.

There's also the escalation of it. Stealing shit? Just a thief. Stealing shit and getting found? That's either a good thief or somebody who IS going to get caught and jailed/hanged. Stealing shit and killing people? That's somebody that needs to become a priority.

And then there is our sister. Murdering innocent people because we got caught? That's not a conversation I wanna have. Shooting a guard because we had to? It's a little more understandable.

I think somebody would have to pay us at least a sum in the range of 12k-16kG plus to take a life, and that's a minimum. Just for the risks alone. 20k+ would be more realistic, if somebody wanted us to apply our skills for that kind of work. There's only so many people we could get away with killing. It's wrong to be cheap with life, and not only for the impracticality of it.

The economy of paid assassins is... regardless of what kind of world this is, if people get the idea they can pay you cheaply to remove their problems they're gonna try to take advantage of that as a much as possible. May as well work for gangs and throw away what little practical ethical grounds our Ailas has at that point.

I think he would do it, if it was worth it or necessary. But given what we've earned without having to kill people? Clearly, our goal is achievable without it.
