Walking out of the thrift shop in your new clothes, you feel like a new man. Your sister struts alongside you, double-strapping her new backpack (you caved like a house of cards in the end) and floating about three inches in the air with every step. You did have to trade in a great ball for full store credit, but you figure you'll be back at some point for the fishing gear, and the kimono girl got a nice commission bonus on her first day.

It's evening in Goldenrod. The sun is gone and the lights are on. The city never sleeps. The blank darkness over the ocean to the east makes a strange contrast to the punctured darkness that hangs over the city. Like someone had divided the night sky into two parts and only one of them was allowed to birth stars.

It's a Saturday night, not particularly chilly, especially not in your new clothes (did you mention, you bought new clothes?) and relatively crowded in the streets, in some ways even more so than in the day. For a second you can even pretend that you're one of the teeming multitudes out on the town, going to a show or a dinner party or whatever it is normal people do.

But pretty soon you're on the tram, heading back to the tunnels and the vision passes much like the pattern of lights out of your window. You return home around 8 and have a quick dinner (some leftovers from lunch) and put your sister to bed.

For you, the night is still young.

Venonat needs to level up and evolve to something more useful, while Growlithe needs more moves. Nidoran needs to reach second evolution too, though until we have a Moon Stone there's not really a rush on that.

Wanna see if we can nab a Gastly, since people didn’t seem interested in keeping Venonat last thread. Maybe check out some abandoned buildings or something?

Normally I'd go for catching, but the only decent pokemon you can catch without fishing in route 34 or 35 are Abra, Drowzee, or pokemon we already have.
And from what I remember, catching an Abra is an exercise in frustration. Teleporty little bastards.

You return the growlithe and nidoran (both cuddling happily with your sister--you drew the line with the poisonous puffball) back into their balls and head out of your tent. Mr. Zinnai, your neighbor, gives you a look. A few others as well. The new clothes, the new pokemon, haven't gone unnoticed.

"Luke." Mr. Zinnai waves you over. "How is everything?"

"Good. Real good."

"New clothes?"

"Yeah. Just some thrift shop stuff."

Mr. Zinnai smiles and you instantly relax. There's no malice in his eyes. No one down here is like that. If one guy gets out, it's like one of their own family had got out. No one begrudges anyone else.

"I'm glad." He says. "You look good. Are you heading out?"

"Just for a little while. You don't mind keeping an eye do you?"

"Of course not." He fiddles with a loose button on his shirt. An old nervous tick.

"What's up?"

He shakes his head. His arthritic wrinkled hands, shake a little as he tightens the button string. "Nothing, just...I'm gonna miss you two. Both of you."

You laugh. "What are you talking about?"

"Come on, Luke. We don't know the details but...we have eyes. You've been talking about it ever since you came down here, you know. Guess it's really happening now."

You touch his hands, skin as brittle as rice paper. You're not really sure what to say. What do you say to a guy who took you in and fed you and comforted you when you were in the hole, when he himself had nothing?

"I'll be here a while yet."

"Sure." He says. He lets you go and smiles again, a little melancholy. "You eat already?" You nod and he tells you keep safe and you tell him you will.

>Head down route 34, plenty of wild pokemon to train with
>Head to the Goldenrod gym, training with actual trainers is a lot safer, not to mention faster, well worth the price of admission
>Head to the pokemon center, maybe you can find some trainers hanging around there willing to spar for free

QM Note: I've made a quick change to the combat system. Now pokemon only have a chance to die when fighting wild pokemon. Trainers will hold back unless they're actually trying to kill your pokemon.

Route 34 is within walking distance of the tunnel and not wanting to encounter Whitney again or deal with trainers, you decide to avoid the gym and pokemon center entirely and head there instead.

You leave your pokeballs behind--never know what kind of trainers lurk out there, some of them might not take no for answer and the patrols aren't always as quick to the punch as they'd like to be.

Twenty minutes later you're crossing the checkpoint. In the far distance you can see the dense tree cover of the Ilex forest, just a blot of black. You don't plan on going quite that far today, there's plenty of pokemon in the woods surrounding the road. You can already hear the hoothoots and snoring drowzees.

Choose pokemon to train (exp is split among pokemon):
>Nibbles (growlithe)
>King (nidoran)
>Venonaut

Choose a training focus:
>Focus on accuracy and speed
>Focus on power
>Focus on endurance
>No focus, quantity over quality

You spend the next three hours shooting down hoothoots and ripping into wandering drowzees with your growlithe, stopping only to heal up at the pokemon center and then jog back to continue training. You eventually get into a steady rhythm. The fight with the scyther served as a valuable lesson in speed trumping power so you work carefully to improve Nibbles's footwork and coordination.

You're more exhausted than your pokemon when it's all over, but there's been definite progress. Growlithe gained some experience and sits comfortably at level 18, picking up a new move to boot: Leer.. More than that, his speed has increased considerably. Shooting down the flying hoothoots in particular has made his ember much more accurate and quick, almost like a water gun attack. (+10% to rolls for Ember)

It's almost 12 when you finally get back to your sister. She mumbles as you slip between the blankets. "Big bro?"

"Go back to sleep."

"I had a dream."

"A bad dream?"

"I don't know."

"Tell me."

"I was in a big room, really white and you were there and I think dad was there too but I couldn't see his face. And there was this lady and she was nice and she gave me this doll and...and, I don't know what happens after that. But I think...do you think it was mom?"

"No." You say, automatically.

"Oh." She goes quiet for a while, but by her breathing you can tell she's not yet asleep. "What was mom like?"

Your breath catches. "...you look just like her."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"Do you think, maybe we can see her again? Not right now, I mean, after we move out from here? Maybe?"

You hold her even closer, so tightly that you can feel her little heart bouncing off of yours. "One day." You say. Because it is inevitable, walking this path, that you'll meet her again. Your sister eventually drifts off from that assurance but you stay awake wondering how you'll face the woman that abandoned her own daughter. Listen to me. Family is everything. Loyalty is life. Don't cry. Look at me. There's only us now in this world, forget about her, we don't need her, we never did. It was a mistake. You have to be strong Luke, you understand? Loyalty means nothing without strength. Stop crying goddamn it.

You wipe your eyes. You can still feel his arms around you, as tight as you're holding your sister. You laugh softly and close your eyes. "Asshole." You say, to no one, to the air, to heaven.

In the morning, your sister insists on naming the venonaut, who, still poisonous to the touch, is kept squarely in his ball.

>Name for the venonaut?

It's one of those lazy Goldenrod Sundays, where the citizens are nursing their hangovers from the night before, sleeping in, taking a double dose of painkillers. You are up early, despite your late night excursion, planning out the day.

It's doubtful that your growlithe has anything left to gain from fighting more wild pokemon. You'll have to face off against actual trainers if you want to make any more progress. Not to mention that you need to start making cash toward the 20 grand you promised Mr. Yamauchi. Still, there's something to be said about a balanced party and the other two could still use work.

The training goes slower this time around. In part because you split your effort evenly between both pokemon and in part because of your sister's stumpy legs, which make the trips back to the pokemon center take twice as long.

Still, at the end of a couple hours of diligent work, both King and Fuzzy (christened courtesy of your sister) are at level 15. Having them fight near continuously for so long also boosts their endurance. (+1 rounds to defeat). Your activities generate some interest among the trainers that frequent the route as well. A few of them even challenge you, but you decline, citing that you don't have the money for a wager. Word spreads, and they all leave you alone.

But as with the growlithe, there's nothing more to be gained from stomping on pidgeys and rattatas, except maybe real food for the pokemon, instead of the digitized stuff that they "eat" when they get healed at the pokemon center. You remember hearing somewhere that real food does make a difference in the pokemon's development, so there's always that. But, in either case, training in the wild is now out. It's either training at the gym or out on the road. The gym has the added possibility of a gym badge (and a couple grand to boot)--but comes with a non-refundable entry cost. The trainers on the road of course, have the lure of cash money and with your set up, you don't think you're wiping out anytime soon.

It's mostly just a mechanical reason. It's easier to write each one separately than combine them together, and really there's no (mechanical) benefit to doing them both at the same time. You can still search for pokemon of course and the probabilities for catches will remain the same.

The stink of perfume and flowers is so heavy it's hard to breathe. The gym is more like arboretum, the ceiling entirely of transparent glass in the sun and the internal temperature strictly controlled to create a pleasant atmosphere for the rows and rows of potted plants, rosebushes and vines growing on the many wireframe arches.

It's a popular meeting place for the Goldenrod queen bees, the beauty and clothing obsessed class of women that prey on the bluebloods of the city. Succubi in a sense, sucking the disposable income of their lovers, boyfriends and god forbid, husbands. Most of them are just here to gossip, but a few are serious trainers, the ones that Whitney (now probably someone else) has employed to test wannabe challengers.

"Yo! Champ in the making." A man in glasses waves you over by the entrance. "You here to challenge Bridget?"

"How'd you guess?"

"It was either that or you're trying to pick up some chicks. The cute sister does work, I'll say that much." He winks at your sister and she sticks out her tongue at him.

"No, I'm here for the badge."

"Right. Trainer card?" You show it to him. "No badges huh? Cool. So it's $25 for a full challenge ticket. Or just $10 if you want a day pass and battle the trainers. I could...also offer some advice, quid pro quo. If you know what I mean."

"I'll just take the day pass." Although you do have an idea of what you're going to face, it's better to test the waters and make sure there are no surprises. You've confirmed that Whitney isn't the gym leader anymore. Her second-in-command, Bridget, has stepped up to the plate and with that might have come other changes. You remember Bridget being one of the more serious trainers in the gym, someone that never really got along with all the glitz-and-glamour-girls. Still, you're not particularly worried. Without any gym badges to your name, the trainers you can face are quite limited. Likewise, Bridget will have to use one of her reserve parties--which should be much weaker than your own.

Eyes and hushed voices follow you as you purchase the pass . Ever since the last league champion was crowned, the rate of new challengers has dried up and seeing a contender and a male one at that, has set all the girls at attention.

"Hey there handsome. You're new here aren't you? My name is Victoria but you can call me Vicky." The woman extends her hand like she wants you to kiss it. She checks all the boxes of the typical model-type: tall, leggy, perfectly arranged hair, tight-fitting clothing that shows off just the right amount of cleavage, brand-name perfume applied so carefully it seems like natural odor; a doll fresh from the box.

"I'm Luke. You can call me Luke." You take her hand and give it a firm shake, which confuses her. "Are you a trainer here? I'm looking to battle."

She flashes her straight, perfect teeth. "So serious! But I kinda like guys like that too." She giggles in a grossly coquettish way. Your sister makes gagging motion with her thumb and you have to keep from laughing. You follow Vicky to one of the many battle areas scattered among the roses and hydrangeas. A few curious onlookers form a crowd. "You know the rules, right honey?"

"Yes. Beat four trainers before I challenge the gym leader--right?"

"Right you are. And as an added bonus, I'll let you take me out if you beat me." She giggles again.

"No thanks."

A vein begins to swell on her left temple, but she maintains her smile nonetheless. She reaches into her purse and takes out a pokeball, waiting for you to do the same.

You both throw your pokeballs at the same time. Her's releases a Sentret, which immediately hides his face behind its bushy tail. You of course, release Fuzzy, your venonaut. Likely there are some of the other trainers you'll face today among the crowd and you want to keep your main cards close to your vest.

There's a sound like car accident behind you. Your sister is having a stroke over the sheer cuteness of the Sentret. "Cute. Cute!" She shouts. Vicky flips her hair and smiles, somehow looking even better when she's smug.

Fuzzy is actually sleeping when you bring him out, you forgot that he normally sleeps during the day.

>Switch out Fuzzy for a different pokemon (enemy gets free hit on next pokemon)
>Let the Sentret attack and wake it up, Fuzzy can take it, you've been training his endurance for just this reason

Gotta fix that later, can't have him napping and giving free hits in the future.

>>Let the Sentret attack and wake it up, Fuzzy can take it, you've been training his endurance for just this reason
We'll have to sort that another time. In hindsight, it should have been odd to try using a nocturnal pokemon during the day.
We really need to stop thinking in game mechanics.

>1 Success: Partial Failure

Try as you might, you can't get the venonaut up in time. Vicky is at least a good enough trainer to know that a headfirst attack would only poison her pokemon. She first has sentret roll Fuzzy on his back and then use defense curl to make his muscles rigid.

The tackle that follows comes straight from above. Sentret leaps into the air and hit venonauts with a flying somersault straight in the only place undefended by his poisonous fur. He immediately wakes up from this assault, not as hurt as Vicky would have liked and more angry than anything else.

>Fuzzy: 2/3 HP
>Have Fuzzy release spores to make the sentret confused (adds Confusion* status if 2+ successes)

>3 Successes: Critical!

Rather than attack head-on, you have Fuzzy release a cloud of spores all over the battle area. Sentret breathes them in and attempts the same flying tackle--slamming straight into the ground. It's not out of the fight yet, but Vicky wisely returns the pokemon back into its ball and releases another just like it. Another sentret.

"How many of these do you have?"

"Shut up!" She seems to be getting a little more into the battle at least, but switching out her pokemon lets you get a free attack in.

>3 Successes (1+2 from nat 100): Critical!

Before the sentret even knows where he is your little puffball slams into his face, his sheer mass sending the smaller creature skidding ten feet across the ground. Forget poisoning the little bastard, the sentret is completely down for the count.

Vicky blows an errant strand of hair from her face, returns sentret and reaches back for her third and final pokemon. There's a moment of tense silence and then...another sentret.

"Where did you even catch all these?"

She doesn't dignifying the taunt with a response. The match is pretty much in the bag now.

>Keep it simple, conserve venonat's energy: confuse the sentret

>1 Success: Partial failure

You decide to let your venonaut get a breather and have him try to confuse this sentret as well. The spores don't work this time around. Vicky has the sentret wrap its face using its tail, protecting its mouth, nose and eyes from the spores.

Once the spore cloud has dissipated, it begins charging on all fours leaping from side to side in an effort to strike your venonaut at his weak-point. Unfortunately, Fuzzy is too heavy to adequately match the sentret's speed and takes a quick attack to the face, knocking (rolling really) him on his back.

"Ha! Finally." Says Vicky.

Fuzzy can still fight, courtesy of all the training you did out in the fields, but the damage is starting to build up. The spores probably won't work again, but maybe you can just finish this off with a well-placed tackle.

>2 Successes: Regular Success

Instead of trying to attack head on, you let the sentret come to you. Vicky tries the same maneuver as before, falling right into your plans. This time, midway into the sentret's attack you have Fuzzy tackle the sentret using his own force against him. It's like watching a basketball hit a ping-pong ball, the sentret goes flying out of the battle area from the force of the blow.

Somehow it's still conscious (though it's skinned its hands and knees) and still wants to fight but Vicky decides she's had enough. She returns the pokemon and resigns the battle, huffing off without another word, little tears at the edges of her eyes.

No one cheers. There's just a hushed silence as the next challenger approaches. Almost identical copy of Vicky, same kind of clothes, even the same perfume, but blonde instead of brunette.

>>
>>3362240
Thank you, blessed qm
>>
>>3362240
Now not to argue against myself but if you count 100 as a crit success, any particular reason you dont count 1 as a crit failure.

Asking only to find your reasoning, not to criticize.
>>
>>3362244
Having 1's at crit fails allows for the possibility of negative successes which doesn't really make sense imo. Having more than 3 successes though has an intuitive consequence. I guess it's just ultimately arbitrary. I'd rather reward good luck than punish bad luck.
