“Being a scout is not as easy as I or the Corporal make it look,” says Burke. Everyone has assembled outside, save for Joffrey, who has been left in the care of Graves. They all sit in a school circle listening to her. You and Rutledge stand to the side, watching her as she holds her now scopeless DMR under her arm, pointed at the ground. “It’s not something I can teach to you in one day nor is it something you can get it in one day. It’s an attitude. An attitude of knowing what fights to pick and what fights to give up. As a scout, your job is to lay low and not pick fights until it’s the best time to do so. And given our current situation, that’s what we’re being forced into. However, we catch the Lizards at their weakest when we’re at our strongest, I guarantee you might get home.” Everyone looks at her with some parts skepticism, some parts curiosity. “Now.” She steps forward. “It’s my job, thanks to Corporal Rutledge and Boo over here, to make sure you get home alive.” She looks directly at Tierney. Tierney flinches, looking away. “I will –not- succeed.” Tierney freezes, completely spooked. “Not with all of you. If you want to get home, you have to start thinking like the Lizards do. Because we are on their home turf.”

Rutledge smirks, whispering to you. “Most words I’ve heard out of her yet.” It’s a strong speech. But you do worry that she’s scaring them a little.

“We’re going to start off first by limbering up, warming up, stretching our muscles and exercising a bit. Hiding means having to be flexible. Don’t want to pull a muscle,” Burke says. “Go on, I ain’t a gym teacher. Get moving.” The school circle breaks up as everyone moves to start flexing their limbs and stretching their bodies to let the muscles relax. “We’re going to start with maneuver and work our way up to theory.” She looks at Tierney, who still sits on the ground, nervous. “Tierney, come on, get up.”

“R-… Right.” Tierney stands up, quietly adjusting her shoulders as she looks around at everyone. They quietly exercise and let themselves enjoy a respite in the sun.

Rutledge whistles to Bryce. “Bryce!” Bryce stops her working and comes over. “You ready to go with ‘Boo’ here?”

Bryce says, “Whenever he is.” Right, the trap-laying. Bryce looks at you, a little eagerness on her face. She rolls up her sleeves too, ready to get some real work done.

Welcome back to No One Gets Left Behind.

In the last episode, Cope and Harrell were buried. Some drama was had too between you and Tierney. And the little eggs with the Wife have hatched into three beautiful baby Deinos and one runt. So far, things seem to be calming down. But who knows what'll happen next. Right now, you were supposed to be going trap laying with Bryce out into the jungle, unless you have other ideas...

As per usual, I'll be updating once I get home from work around 6PM EST tomorrow-ish. So go ahead and leave your votes in. And we shall get right to things. Make your plans, discuss the best girls, etc.

>"Am gonna check on the eggs first"

Lol, Bryce is so obviously going to try to kill us. I say we get the wife and explain to her we want her to follow us steathily, avoid the traps we lay, and watch Bryce, if Bryce tries anything. We want her to distract or attack Bryce (without getting shot) and we team up to subdue her.

WE DON'T WANT TO APPROACH THE CAMP IF SHE'S DEAD. If we come back with Bryce dead, I suspect Rutledge will probably start shit about Cope and Harrell, pointing fingers at us since the guy obviously wants to seize control. Instead we camp out with Bryce restrained for the time being.

I assume we can record our voice on Harrell's computer. We relay on this recording telling trusted individuals (Burke, Graves, etc) to look out for any signs of a coup from Rutledge while we're gone and be prepared. We give this recording to our Lizard friend and tell him to give it trusted individuals once we leave.

We don't know how Rutledge will react if we come back with Bryce obviously captured so to minimize the risk of a suprise attack and lose valuable people, we have somebody on the look out for a signal, ours will be something like waving our hands in the distance. This is the signal for loyal supporters to apprehend Rutledge and his fellows.

If anybody is wondering what on earth am I talking about, just read the previous threads and notice how Rutledge and Bryce are pretty chummy about setting us off on our own while our own instincts are screaming not to trust Rutledge. Bastard wants to strike while the iron is hot and there already is an upset in the chain of command.

“I’m gonna check on the eggs first,” you say. Rutledge nods, leaving you to it. He watches over Burke and crew as they begin their exercises while you walk on over to the stable. Paranoia is striking at you. And while you really have no reason to think Bryce will kill you, there’s no reason to think she won’t either. Something about Rutledge is off to you. You walk up to the stable then up on the wall. Delta is there too, sitting on the ground, munching out of a bucket full of meat that Nielson left for him. The Wife spits out some chewed up meat for the four kids to eat up as a means of breakfast. Already a whole day later and they’re walking around like they weren’t born yesterday. Almost admirable. Aside from the runt of course. The runt continues to weakly try to eat.

You whistle, getting the Wife’s attention. “Delta.” Delta looks up at you, attentive. You kneel down and start whispering to him. “This is between you and me. Tell her I need her to follow me without being seen. And protect me from anything and –everything-. Understood?” Delta nods. Delta leans up and starts clicking his teeth to the Wife. The Wife hisses, her eyes glancing to you before looking at Delta. Then she growls, storming out of the stables.

Well, you suppose she’s already on her way then. The four kids try to follow but you quickly shut the stable door. “Watch them,” you say to Delta. Delta barks, then looks at the kids. “Don’t –eat- them.” Delta snickers, walking back to his little post before sitting down and watching the team train.

And one more thing. You take out Harrell’s tablet and quickly type down a message. Graves isn’t here. You can’t pull Burke aside without rousing any suspicion. So the best option now is Nielson. “Hey, Nielson! How come you gave Delta so much meat this morning?”

Nielson looks over, confused. “What?”

“Come here, let me show ya,” you say. He glances around. Rutledge ignores this happening, watching everyone get together to begin their training. “Delta’s gonna get fat off of all this stuff you’re giving him you know. He’s a prisoner, not a guest.” You shove the tablet into his hand. “So try to pay more attention, alright?” He looks down at the tablet, then sees your face. He nods slowly, understanding. He places the tablet into his satchel.

“Yeah, got it, boss,” he says. “Hey, I’ll see you when you get back, okay?” Right. He goes back.

“Bryce!” you call. Bryce looks up from her whittling of a stick with her knife. “Let’s go.” She picks up her machete scabbard and clips it to her belt, then picks up her rifle too. The two of you get out to the woods. “Take point. I’ll navigate.” You pull out a map and start looking. She’ll take point for two reasons. One, so you can see her and keep her in your vision at all times. And two, just in case the White Feather is out there. She whistles quietly to herself, slinging her rifle.

“So where are you from, babe?” she asks.

“Hopewell,” you say. The two of you have marched on for about a half hour until you finally get to a trapping point out east. This brings you somewhere towards you actually first found Rutledge and company. This particular point appears to be a trail kicked up by some animals, likely big ones like Baryonyx or even midget sauropods.

“Pretty place?” she asks, curious.

“Yeah,” you say.

She squints, quirking her brow. “Not very talkative, aren’t you?”

“We’re working, Bryce. Maybe when we get back,” you say. Bryce rolls her eyes.

“You know, I’m from Val Verde colony, up near the Outer Rim. That’s a fun place. Lot of people, lotta aliens. I got a brother that runs a hotel, says Rumians love to frak like rabbits and leave the place covered in slime. You ever meet a Rumian? They’re wicked.” You’ve heard. But you don’t really feel too much like conversing. Bryce stares at you as you glance around at the woods, trying to find a good place to lay a trap. “Come on, babe. I’m trying to be social.”

“I’d prefer if you didn’t call me babe, Bryce,” you say. You look at her, not amused at all by her attempts at endearment.

She sighs. “Fine. Try to be social, get brushed off.” She places her hands on her hips, her hand brushing against the pistol holster, glaring a little at you. “What do you want to do here? Trails are likely spots for traps but we can do quite a bit here I think.”

“Let’s get digging,” you say. “A pit with some stakes, nothing too complicated. Then we’ll cover it with some leaves and foliage. Sound good?” She nods. “Alright.” She flips out an entrenching tool while you seek out some branches to whittle down into stakes. After a brief search, you find about seven that look sturdy and long enough. You sit on down on a fallen tree and watch Bryce as she starts digging up the trail. The dirt will have to be relocated obviously. But once it’s all done, you can basically cover this trail with more leaves and some grass and have yourself a good and nearly invisible pit trap.

“How deep should it be?” she asks.

“About a meter and a half is fine,” you say. She looks at you, grimacing. “It doesn’t have to be big. We want to maybe catch a Raptor or something. These traps would be wasted on the Troodon.”

“Sure, sure,” she remarks. She stabs the ground with the E-Tool and keeps on trucking. As she works, you watch her closely. There’s no doubt in your mind that maybe, just maybe, Bryce was sent up here with you to kill you or otherwise eliminate you. Question is how would she do it? Maybe that conversation was nothing but a honeytrap to try and bait you in. Or maybe she was hoping you’d dig with her, then she’d knock you out and bury you alive. Or maybe if she was clever, she’d wait for you to turn your back then she’d just shoot you in the back of the head. Either way, you’re keeping an eye on her. She wipes her forehead, having managed to get herself a meter in after what feels like twenty minutes of labor.

Bryce looks at you. “You know, this hole ain’t going to dig itself.”

“And these stakes won’t make themselves either,” you say. “We’re saving time splitting tasks.”

“Yeah, yeah…” She rolls her eyes again, then goes back to digging.

You stab the last stake into the ground. The dirt as well has been relocated to the sides of the trail too, hidden beneath leaves and bushes. More leaves gathered up along with some weeds, grass clippings, some random sticks too were piled up over the pit and finally, you leave a trail marker on a tree: a cut from your machete on the trunk. That way the Deinos know this is a trap. And the Wife too should be watching so she should know as well.

Bryce wipes her forehead. “If I had known you’d have me do most of the work, I’d have just let you go by yourself.”

“Very funny,” you say.

“Right. Let’s keep at this. We’ll dig these traps all along the eastern sector. Every one should buy us a lot of time.” Bryce sighs, realizing you’re going to make her do most of the digging. “Come on. It’ll be more exercise for you.” She folds up the E-Tool and slings it onto her pack before you motion for her to take point. She walks on ahead, an annoyed posture to her movement. You follow behind.

The next few hours are spent digging, making stakes, digging, making more stakes, and laying these traps all over the east side. You must have dug somewhere in the area of twenty of these bad boys all over the woods. Bryce pants heavily as she digs out the last bit of the next pit while you ready the stakes for it. She wipes sweat off of her forehead then slings the last of the dirt out of there. “Done!” she declares. She climbs on out. You jump on in then start shoving the stakes into the ground before gently hammering them with a rock. She sits down at the edge of the hole, resting herself. “My arms are tired.”

“No shit,” you say. “Think about how I feel.”

“You feel? You did all the cutting. All I did was dig,” she says. For good reason. If you got yourself to digging, she’d have every opportunity to sneak up on you. At least whittling some stakes, you have a knife out and you can keep an eye on her. “Hmph. I can see why you’re still a kissless virgin from what I hear, you ain’t no gentleman.”

“I never claimed to be,” you say back. “Anyway. We can take a short break. It’s just about past lunch anyway, we can probably have a snack.” She nods, groaning as she wipes her forehead free of all the sweat drenching her face. She’s had a few opportunities to make some attempt and yet nothing. “Bryce I got a question for you.”

“Oh?” She blinks. “What?”

You’re not sure why you want to ask this but it’s eating away at you. “You ever think about killing someone?”

“All the time actually,” she says. You roll your eyes. “Why? You feel threatened?”

You stand there, interested. You say, “Say you and me out here. How would you kill me?”

“I’d wait until you were asleep then just pump you full of pain-stop until you overdose,” she says. “I carry at least two shots in my IFAK these days.”

She shrugs. “Like. That’s easy mode. But if I seriously had to kill you like right now, then I’d probably shoot you in both kneecaps and feed you to whatever big predator is out here. Or better yet, if I see a Troodon group, that works too. Troodon are vicious creatures you know. They eat anything from what I saw. Anything. So no evidence and I can say truthfully too that you were eaten. I wouldn’t have to include the shooting you part. Nobody would be the wiser.

The two of you sit down on a log and open up a pair of C-Rations. No heat for these ones, don’t want to attract any unwitting visitors. Shame really, you have cold gooey mac and cheese that’d be wonderful if they were warm. You take the spork and start eating. “So Val Verde you say?”

She nods. “Yep. The Dominion made it hard on me and the family, they didn’t take too kindly to the fact that my Dad was an activist.” She munches down on a biscuit, grimacing a little. “One day, boom, he gets drafted. The Dominion takes him for their latest war and they don’t return him.”

“You drafted as well?” you ask.

“In place of my brother,” she says. “I don’t know how to run a hotel and that hotel is the only way we can make money these days. And even then…” She sighs a bit, glancing out to the woods. “Not like I have much left to lose anyway. If I die, they’ll just find some other way to get at him and close the hotel down.” That’s a shame. Though you never did quite agree with pro-alien activism. You’re not sure how it makes sense that aliens get the same rights humans do when the Dominion is founded on human principles after all. “What about you?”

“I enlisted,” you say. She tilts her head, confused. “To impress a girl.”

“Did you two…?”

“No.”

“Pfft.” Bryce snickers, looking at you smugly.

“Don’t look at me like that,” you say. “I was young.”

“We’re –all- young, babe,” says Bryce. “I don’t think there’s any of us out of our 20s. I bet you think you feel old now having to baby Tierney every day. Just wait until you get home. I’ve heard stories about people who get drafted, go to war, then come back and they just leap off the nearest building because they can’t adjust back.” Bryce takes another bite out of her biscuit. “I’ll be honest. That’s a little scary. Losing yourself like that.”

“I’m sure we’ll be fine,” you say. “We’ve got each other to rely on out here at least. And as long as we hold out until the Dominion arrives, we’ll be fine.”

“So you say,” she says.

“What did you do before you got drafted?” you ask.

“I was in school,” she says. “Studying architecture. I wanted to build houses when I grew up, put a little something back into the world. Of course, now we got this.” She motions to the ground, looking at you. “So… not sure how that’ll work if I get back. If I even want to go back anyway.”

“Huh?” What was that she said?

She looks at you, confused. Then she sighs, a more stern expression on her face. “Don’t look at me like that, babe. You’ve thought of it too, haven’t you? I mean, sure the Dominion is going to come back. But it might be weeks, months… years. Until then… we’re basically free. Aside from the Lizards trying to kill us and the wildlife and everything.” She leans over to you, looking you dead in the eye. “Don’t tell me you haven’t thought of living free out here without the Dominion.”

“What about you? You have a family back home,” you say, trying to ward her away from that thought.

“We’ve been here for weeks, babe. The Dominion probably thinks we’re all dead,” she says. “And next-of-kin letters have probably already been sent out.” That stings a bit. What would your Mom think if she got that letter? Shit. “Think about it, no laws, no Dominion, no draft, nothing. Just humans and the wild. I’m sure you’ve thought about it, just staying here.” She slaps your arm. “Hell, you’re in charge now apparently. Think about that too. Must feel powerful I reckon.”

I'm still not sure if anyone would even want to go back if we managed to get this hunk of junk ship spaceborne. Maybe we could just pick a direction and go, find a far less hostile habitable planet.
Maybe the ship will have a navigation computer with some points of interest on it.

Bryce looks at you weirdly for saying something like that. “Well, listen, you should probably get deciding soon. And heck if you ask me, no way we’re going to get that ship spaceborne unless some miracle were to occur.”

“I’m just saying, I keep my promises,” you say.

“Oooh, yikes.” Bryce hisses a bit, cringing. “Nobody ever tell you not to make promises you can’t keep?”

“Well I intend to keep my promises, Bryce, or die trying,” you say. “And like I said, some of us here actually want to leave. Morrison’s got a wife. Tierney’s got her family. Joffrey’s gotta go back if he wants to get patched up. We don’t belong here.”

“Hmph.” Bryce sighs, looking out towards that pit trap she dug up. “Fair enough.” She stands up, having finished her lunch. You do too as well, making sure to dispose of the C-Rations thoughtfully so they don’t attract too much attention. “Right. Lunch is over then I guess. You want to get to-“ A loud howl echoes through the woods to the east. That wasn’t Deinos. That was a Raptor. It’s followed by several others. You kneel down with Bryce looking around. They were a long way off.

“Raptors,” you say.

“Think they’re starting a patrol or something?” she asks.

“Probably,” you say. Well, if they’re coming around here, that means you might get something in these traps.

You decided to hide inside the roots of a very thick and big tree that overlooks one of the pit traps. You have a clear enough sight for it about a hundred meters before it fades into foliage. You and Bryce keep your rifles trained down on it, covered by some foliage and bush growing along the root. If you fire, your plasma shots will definitely point back to you. So you might only get one shot if they do fall into a trap.

After what feels like an hour or two of waiting, you see a Raptor pop into view. A Raptor Major coming from the east flanked by three other Raptor Minors. Bryce looks at you. You gesture for her to hold fire. The Raptor Major sniffs the air, grimacing as it walks around the small clearing. The other Raptors start spreading out a little, sniffing at the trees. They’re probably trying to catch your scent. One of them focuses up on the pit, confused. Oh, that’s Bryce’s scent they’re getting. The Raptor Minor continues to spot along Bryce’s scent.

Then boom, he falls straight into the pit and screeches. The other Raptors look and quickly run over to see what just happened. What probably just happened is an impaled Raptor on some stakes, given that it’s not immediately jumping back out. The Raptor inside the pit gives out blood-curdling screams and howls, likely it is wounded. The other three Raptors up top look around, confused. The Raptor Major sniffs, trying to catch a scent.

Right, the trap worked. Now what?

You open up on them. The first shot is a head shot on the Major. The other two shots are on the other Raptor Minors, also head shots. They drop down instantly, like sacks of potatoes. Bryce looks at you, confused. She didn’t even fire a shot. “Damn. Warn me next time.”

“If I missed, I would’ve expected you to fix it for me,” you say. The two of you stand up and hurry on over to the corpses. The three Raptor corpses look pretty motionless, dead for all intents and purposes. “That was some good shooting though, you have to admit.”

“Yeah, I do,” she says. She kicks one of the Raptors, making sure it’s dead completely dead before looking into the pit. The Raptor screams, his side penetrated all the way through by the wood stakes. “Ah, jeez. That’s a hell of a way to go.” The Raptor continues crying out, trying to call for help or just screaming in pain you’re not sure.

“Right,” you say. “Let’s bug out before another patrol gets around here.”

Bryce says, “What about this guy? We’re just going to let him bleed out?”

You sigh, then quickly blast the Raptor in the head. Its screaming stops and it goes limp in the hole. Hmph. You look at Bryce and say, “Let’s bury these guys in this pit then move on.” Bryce sighs in frustration. She knows she’ll do the burying. You sling your carbine and grab a tail of a Raptor and start dragging him in. After an hour or so of work, they’re all buried underneath a fresh pit trap. Disappeared more or less completely. They didn’t even manage to cry out for help.

“Like a proper murder,” says Bryce. You roll your eyes. “Come on, let’s bug out.”

The two of you hurry on and away from the site. The scent will likely attract more anyway. But by the time they pick it up, you’ll be long gone hopefully.

Bryce says to you, “Think they’ll find that patrol again?”

“Probably not for a few days at least,” you say back. “If we make some patrols disappear, get them to fear these woods, we’ll slow them down.” Bryce nods, agreeing with that sentiment.

Once you’re a sufficient distance away from that old pit trap, the two of you take a knee and consolidate on what else there is to do. Given that it’s now past the afternoon, it’ll get dark fairly soon. You have maybe four or five hours worth of good sunlight left.

>> Get trapping north, put some effort in at least

So you're about a couple hundred meters away from the ship itself. Going north or south would take you even further.

The difference between north and south is enemy strength (or suspected thereof). You know they might come from the south, you probably just don't know how many. But you know how many are north because the Hill is in that direction.
>>
> Get trapping north, put some effort in at least.

You decided to take up digging instead of her doing all the work. You’ve trekked about another few hundred meters to the north side of the base, almost near to the river. Thankfully the trees and such are giving you cover hopefully against any forward observers and spotters. Right now though, that wasn’t what was concerning you. You were insisting to keep Bryce in your peripheral vision. She sits on a log, sharpening a stake with her machete. As long as you keep her there, you’ll be fine. If she’s gone, hopefully the Wife is still following you.

This is about your third pit trap and already your arms were considerably tired. But you won’t complain. You made Bryce do twenty of these holes after all. As you dig though, you hear chirping. You freeze.

Then a small Miocorvus flies up onto the edge of the hole, chirping and crowing at you. You quickly ward it away, dumb bird. It flies off. Bryce looks at you for a second, then goes back to lazily sharpening down a stake. You sigh. This is boring work but someone’s gotta do it. Once you test these out, you can move onto more bigger traps, hopefully ones that can take down those Ceratosauruses or even a Rex. Maybe you might even get White Feather with one of these.

As you dig however, you hear something that was not chirping, more curious cooing. You and Bryce stop, looking around. That wasn’t a Deino nor a Raptor. You both look around, then see something in one of the bushes. Stepping out of a bush was a long-necked sauropod, that eclipsed you in about a meter in height. It kept its head low, looking at you two curiously as it munches on some leaves. “Oh.” Bryce lets her arms go slack. “It’s one of these idiots.”

“Be careful with it,” you say. “There might be more.” You can’t remember if they segregate by size but you don’t want to find out right now if she shoots it. Bryce puts her hand on its head then gently guides it away. It groans loudly, aiming away from Bryce. It starts walking away, mooing a bit as it stomps off idly, it’s tail dragging behind it.

“Dumbasses,” Bryce mutters. As if to respond, the sauropod’s tail suddenly coils up and whips her in the ass. “OW! SON OF A-“ Bryce jumps up, holding her bottom. She raises her rifle again.

“Don’t shoot it, Bryce.” She looks at you, angry. “If it’s not alone or someone hears it, we’ll be in some deep shit.”

Bryce relents, slinging her rifle and kicking at the ground. The little Saurpod continues stomping away, mooing loudly. “Animals, hate ‘em…” She sits down on the log again, but flinches, holding her butt. “Ow! That-… Ow.” She rubs it, hissing a bit. “Shit, I hope I’m not bleeding. Goddamn long necked freak.”

“Relax,” you say. “Just squat or something.” She rolls her eyes before doing just as you say. You go back to digging. Well, at least she won’t be exposing your position with needless fire anymore. You finally get the last bit of dirt out of this hole, then climb out. Bryce hops in, then starts staking the spikes into the ground. You’ll gather up some leaves and things and get to covering this hole up. Sweat beads down your cheeks as you look around. The woods are oddly quiet. You’re not sure why though. That sauropod was still walking around. It’s not like there are any predators about.

Then you hear some thunder off in the distance. Oh great. –More rain-. Just what you needed.

Once Bryce is done, she climbs on out and dusts herself off. She yelps, touching at her butt again. “I think I’m done,” she says. “Goddamn thing, my ass feels like it’s on fire.”

“That hit harder than Rutledge?” you ask.

“Oh, haha, now you decide to be a frakking comedian,” Bryce says. “I’m serious. Can we head back? I want to get this looked at.” You stand there, looking at her. She looks back at you, then says, “I ain’t letting –you- look at my ass, tough guy. You ain’t a medic.” Shit.

>>
> “Fine, let’s go.”

“Fine, let’s go,” you say. “You need any help?” She waves you off, limping as she does. Well, as long as she can walk. You shake your head, walking behind her. She rubs at her tender butt as she walks, still limping, favoring her left leg it seems. You don’t doubt that it hurts. But you’ll make sure she’s in your vision as you walk.

After some time, you come back to the base as the rain comes in. It’s only a light mist, but it’s enough to get nearly everyone inside it seems. You find the Wife still gone from the Stable, probably still trailing you and looking for an opportunity to arrive unnoticed. You look up to see Nielson on guard. He sees you, and you give him the signal that you’re okay, a simple thumbs up. He nods, stepping back and allowing you to come in. Graves talks outside with Morrison. Morrison says, “… and man Tierney hits like a freight truck. Little girl like her, you better watch out.”

“What’s this about Tierney?” you ask.

“Oh, Daddy, you’re back,” says Graves. “Yeah, Tierney got into a spat with Grimshaw during the training.”

“Did someone hurt her?” you ask, now suddenly curious.

“Hurt her?” Graves snickers, disbelieving. “She cracked one of Grimshaw’s ribs and almost drowned him in the mud. Took three people to get her off.” The hell!?

“What did he say to her?” you ask. “Wait. Wait. Let me…” You sigh. Another thing with Tierney, goddamn it. “Okay, is Grimshaw okay?”

“He’s going under the knife with the AutoDoc. Connell’s watching Tombs, so don’t worry,” says Graves. “But shit. That was something.” She looks at Bryce, and notices her limping. “The hell’s wrong with you?”

Bryce blinks. “I uh… I fell.” She stands up straight. “Hurt my butt a little bit.”

Graves looks at you. “Daddy, were you two playing without me?” Bryce looks at her with some disgust while Morrison starts sniggering away in the back. “You know I’m always up to share.”

“She got whipped by a sauropod,” you say. Bryce blushes intensely, grimacing from the shame. “Pretty bad I would say too, she limped all the way here.”

Graves rolls her eyes. “Fine, I’ll check her out.” She looks at you. “You better talk later with Tierney or Grimshaw though. I think those two need a stern talking to.” Graves motions for Bryce to step inside. Bryce rolls her eyes and limps inside the ship.

Morrison looks at you, curious. “Have fun out there?”

“Plenty.”

“I need a goddamn break.” You sigh, walking inside.

You arrive in the medbay and find Graves injecting some Inst-Aid into Bryce’s bare red asscheek. Apparently it did draw a little blood. Grimshaw meanwhile lies on a table, having been freshly operated on. “Grimshaw,” you call to him. He looks at you, a very annoyed expression on his face. “What’s this I hear about you and Tierney getting into a spat?” you ask.

Grimshaw says, “Okay, look, it wasn’t my fault.”

Tombs wheels the AutoDoc over to the corner. “It was actually.” Connell snickers as he sits in the corner, then quickly takes a tough look when you glance at him.

“Well.” Grimshaw sighs. He sits up, then says, “Okay. What I may have said to her pissed her off then she bashed me in the gut and tried to drown me in a mud puddle.” You tilt your head. What did he say? “We were lifting some logs as exercise and Tierney accidentally slipped and fell. And as a joke I said to her, ‘hey, stop playing around in the mud, kid.’ And then she goes berserk on me!” He shrugs, glancing around. “Girl’s a freak I’d say.”

You stare at him, then look at Tombs. “What did Grimshaw actually say to Tierney?”

Tombs says, “Tierney tried to get up after she slipped but slipped again and fell on her ass. Grimshaw said, ‘You play in the mud like that, no wonder the boss thinks you’re a child’. And that’s when she punched him in the rib and cracked it. Would’ve broken it too but she dealt a glancing blow.” Oh. Oh shit. You look at Grimshaw. Seriously?

“Okay, I didn’t mean it like that!” Grimshaw says. “It was a joke!”

Graves rubs some medigel onto Bryce’s ass and says, “Ha. We’re all laughing, dickface.”

“Come on,” he says. “You ain’t going to bust my balls just because I said the wrong thing, are ya?”

> “I will. What were you thinking?”

“Look. She’s stressed. We all are. And just like with Morrison, there’s stuff we can’t just say to people. I’d prefer if you have some tact because even the slightest remark against someone might set them off.” Grimshaw sighs, glancing away from you. “Come on. I wouldn’t like it if you called me a jackass, I think I’d punch your lights out. Same as if I made fun of your tiny dick or some shit.”

“Piss off,” he says, glaring at you.

“See?” You shake your head, snorting a bit. “Look. I’ll talk with her. We get this settled. And I don’t want this happening again. I just spent an entire day digging pits out there and this is what I come home to.”

“Ah, piss off!” yells Bryce. “You only dug like two!” Okay, she’s got you there. “Ow!” Graves absentmindedly slaps Bryce’s ass before pulling her pants up. “You bitch! That hurt!”

“Like I said,” you say. “I don’t want this happening again. You pull this shit one more time and I guarantee you will be given a choice. Shoveling shit out of the stable with a hungry Wife still inside or being stuck in a closet with Tierney. Your choice. Alright?” He nods, understanding. “Now good. I gotta go find Tierney now. Any of you know where she went?”

Graves says, “I think I saw her in the barracks.” She shrugs, rolling her eyes. “You know, sulking? Like she usually does.” You stare at her. She going somewhere with this? “Listen, just be careful with her, okay? I think she was actually pretty torn up about how badly she mauled Grimshaw.”

“She didn’t shit to me,” Grimshaw mutters.

“Aw, is someone embarrassed they got the shit punched out of them?” asks Graves. “Wittle Gwimmy?” Grimshaw gives her the finger in response.

You open the door and head down to the barracks. Right, prep yourself for this. She’s probably crying. She’s probably still angry. She’s probably sad. Maybe all of the all above. But you can handle this. And if she’s strong, and you’re betting she is, she can handle it too. This will be a learning experience for everyone. Grimshaw will learn not to be a total jackass and Tierney will learn maybe she’s stronger than she looks.

You open up the barracks then look around. All the bedrolls are divided between tables and boxes, shaded by some spare ponchos and blankets. You look in one and see Tierney sitting inside of it, facing the wall and hugging her legs. “Tierney?” She flinches, hearing you call her. “You okay?”

“Yeah,” she says quietly, refusing to look at you. “Is Grimshaw okay?” She seems calm at least.

“He’s fine, they just patched him up,” you explain. “Heard you cracked one of his ribs and almost drowned him in a mud puddle.” She nods slightly, not letting you see her face. You kneel down, facing her. She doesn’t seem very talkative.

Girl needs better impulse control. I honestly don't have a problem with how "useful" she is, even though she seems to think that's her biggest problem. The real problem is that she does things like punching people or running out to fight or whatever pretty much on auto-pilot.

She feels a particular way. That's fine, it's not something to beat yourself up about, we feel the things we feel and we can't really control that. The problem is that she skips straight to acting on that feeling without the vital second step, namely thinking about the feeling that you're feeling and asking yourself how you should act in response to it. She needs to slow down and think about if it's appropriate to act on a feeling before she does something.

“You alright? I hope you’re not too torn up about that. Grimshaw’s fine and everything so there’s no permanent damage aside from his ego obviously.” Tierney nods, still quiet. “Listen, I know things are stressful, but you should try and relax a little. Calm yourself. Think things through before acting on them. I know I’ve wanted to punch a few people in this ship but it’s a matter of knowing not to.”

“I know,” she says. She turns her head, aiming to look at you with those incredibly sad looking eyes of hers. “He’s really okay, right?”

“Yeah, he’s fine. He just got out from the AutoDoc,” you explain. “Still as pissy as ever.” Tierney nods. “Seriously, don’t worry too much about him. I want you worrying about yourself. You shouldn’t let that happen again, okay? I know people here can be mean but we gotta accept that.” Still, it does irk you about what Grimshaw said to Tierney. And to be completely honest, you can –understand- why Tierney lashed out. But it doesn’t excuse almost killing him like that. “Listen, you know what you did wrong. So I’ll let you think on it, okay?” She nods.

“Okay,” she whispers. She goes back to facing the wall once more.

“And…” You sigh. “I have to say, cracking his ribs with a punch and taking him down like that? Takes a really strong girl to do that.” You nod, stepping back. “You’re pretty good.” No response from her. It seems she’s not really in the mood to talk. You suppose you’ll leave her alone for now. But goddamn. Do you really have to come back to this of all things? Seems like something is always up with Tierney. You shake your head, sighing a bit. Blood is coming to boil in your skin, and your head is pounding a bit.

You elect to give yourself a shower in the command truck. Thank God the shower still works, even after all that shrapnel it took when you were rescuing Joffrey. And thank God privacy hasn’t been compromised either. You sigh, letting the water run through your hair and down your body. Your beard is starting to grow out a little. May want to shave that .Or maybe not. It’s up to you later on if you do. Everyone is starting to get a bit scruffy now that you think about it. Hair is growing longer, the men are growing beards, all that stuff.

It worries you but also excites you a bit. Part of you is into a woman who’s a little on the wild side. But that’ll be something for later hopefully.

Once you’re done showering, you freshen up and dry off. You feel recharged. But a nap is probably still in order.

Without much fuss, you make it back to the barracks. You settle down into your bedroll, then lie back and sigh. A few hours of napping should serve you quite well.

“Hey, buddy.” You open your eyes and see Rutledge leaning over, peeking into your bedroll. “You awake?”

You sigh, sitting up a bit. Well. Nap time’s over. You didn’t get to dream at all. “What’s up?” you ask.

Rutledge says, “Deinos have come back. They’re apparently giving some neat gifts to your kids and everything.” Oh, are they. “And they gave some stuff to us too.”

“Like what?” you ask.

“Like…” He sighs, visibly thinking on it. “Well, come on. Let me show you.” You shake your head, grabbing your helmet and poncho and crawling out. The two of you walk down the hall to the outside door. “I tell you something. Everyone’s pretty curious to see what it is. Now that you’re apparently their new pack alpha or whatever, those Deinos have been real friendly.”

“Just wait,” you say. “If they want a shot at me, they’ll take it.”

“I don’t doubt it,” he says.
>>
>>3368197
You look outside, seeing the door’s already open. Everyone is out and about seeing what’s going on (excluding Joffrey obviously). Several Deinos have placed down gifts of fruits, meat, small leaves, and even handcrafted sculptures of creatures. The little kids crow and coo as they stand behind the Wife’s legs. The Wife looks to you and calls you at you, apparently calling you over. Delta hisses, standing next to her.

Nielson turns to you and says, “So uh… this is new.”

“Yeah,” says Bryce. She rubs at her bottom, cringing a bit. “What is this, a baby shower?”

Graves looks at you. “Hey, Daddy. What is all this?”

“You’re asking me?” you say back.

Connell says, “That’s a lot of food. If those little peckers ain’t gonna eat it, I’ll help myself to it, hehe.” He smirks, looking at everyone. Nobody pays him any mind though, and his smirk quickly drops.

When you walk up to the Wife, that signals a Deino to step up to you. He bows his head then holds something out for you. It’s a cup of some very strange looking liquid. Uh. The Wife sniffs it, then laps up some of it up with her tongue. Uuhhh… She turns to you, expecting you to do something now.

You look at Delta. Delta makes a licking motion with his tongue at you. They-… want you to drink this?

You point to it, looking at Delta. “What’s in it?” Delta looks to the Wife then chirps your question to her. The Wife snarls, then croaks a response to Delta. Delta looks at you, then shrugs his hands. What. He doesn’t know!? Well.

Well, it’d be impolite not to take a sip. Everyone watches on with some curiosity as you take the bowl then nod to the Deino. The Deino bows once more, waiting for you to drink. Okay. Steel yourself. At best, maybe it’s just parasaurolophus piss. At worst, it’s poison. Either way… Well, it’s too late to back out now. You take a deep breath. Just a sip. Bottoms up. You put your lips to the bowl and let the liquid flood into your mouth.

And…

It’s surprisingly good. You blink, looking at it. It’s got a sweet tangy flavor to it. You blink again, feeling your face twitch. Has a slight kick to it too. Almost like some kind of cider actually. You look at the Deino, nodding to him. What the hell is this?

Another Deino comes up behind the first one. And you recognize him immediately. Red! You haven’t seen him in a while. Red growls a bit, his scars from fighting Toothy having healed it seems. You nod your head to him. And he nods back as well. Right. You look to Delta. “Ask him.” Delta chirps at Red. Red blinks, then looks at you. He then looks at Delta then back at you once more. Red then chirps an answer back to Delta.

Delta then quickly scrawls out an answer on the ground. Fruits under the sun. Oh, it’s fermented and… rotting fruit? Delta then draws out you and the Wife on the ground drinking from the bowl, then the same for two Deinos with little Deinos.

Graves steps up behind you. “Oh, I get it now. It’s like a baby shower thing.” Looks like it. A ceremonial drink to celebrate the birth of the offspring.

The Deino takes the bowl from you, bowing. Then more Deinos come placing down gifts of leather, food, vegetables, fruit, casks of what look to be more of the drink as well. Red quickly takes his leave, then comes back. He presents to you something special in particular. A bowl of what look to be crushed leaves. You take a whiff of them. They smell slightly bitter. Delta looks at it, then chirps. Red quickly communicates to him with clicks of his teeth. Delta nods, then quickly makes a fire scrawling on the ground.

Oh. Smoking leaves. Okay. Red smiles toothily, baring his sharp teeth at you. You’re not sure how to thank them. Then you look behind them. More Deinos are arriving too with gifts as well. Oh.

Wexley steps up next to you, then says, “So. Should we have gotten Mommy some gifts too?” You roll your eyes. You look up at the sky. It looks like the rain is going to come back. But it seems these Deinos don’t quite care. They all want to show appreciation for the birth of these kids it seems. Perhaps only because you’re now technically their leader. But still, the lengths they’re going to amazes you.

Graves says, “Keep in mind. All these gifts. This is stuff they could’ve used for themselves. They’re hunter-gatherers after all. This is a big deal.” It actually is.

> Maybe a party is in order.

I think everyone needs the stress relief, especially since we're going to be going hard on that hill very soon.

“Maybe a party’s in order,” you say. “After all, they’re bringing us all so many gifts. Figure we can get something going.” You look up at the sky. “At least before the rains come.” You point to Nielson and Morrison. “You two, see if you can get a bonfire going. Break out some of our fruit and some of our hunting catches and share with them.”

“Are you sure?” asks Hood. “I mean… sharing our stuff with them?”

“They’re practically giving stuff away to us,” you say back. “I’d respect that, Hood.”

Stoakes throws her arms up, grinning. “New friends then! Let’s give them a warm welcome!” She walks up to Red, throwing her arms out for a hug. “Welcome to our humble abode!” Red stares at her, clearly not sure what she’s up to. Stoakes still stands there, starting to sweat and shake a little from fear that she probably did something wrong. Not her smartest decision, let’s be frank. You step up to Red, motioning your arms as if to clutch something. Red looks at you, then at Stoakes, still confused. But then he walks up and simply sits his head on top of her shoulder. “Awwhaha…” Stoakes still stands there, shaking from fear. “He’s-… he’s hugging me.”

Smitty and Levy start guffawing. “We’ll get the stuff.” Nielson and Morrison move to grab some firewood too.

While night is starting to fall and a light mist is starting to settle in, the bonfire has already been lit up. More Deinos come to drop off their offerings to the Wife. The Wife stands over her kids, greeting each follower with respect and joy at their presence judging by her relaxed body language and her high pitched chattering to them. Several of the Deinos have opened their casks and given it up to everyone to drink. The communal casks are large enough that three or four can drink out of one at once.
>>
>>3370926
And that’s exactly what they do. It’s not until Godwin being Godwin deciding to just take a cup straight out from the cask while the Deinos drink that the others decide to get some for themselves. “This is actually really good!” Godwin says. “These Deinos know how to make good booze!”

“Let’s not all drink at once,” says Graves. She sits down on a log by the bonfire, looking at Godwin disdainfully. “I don’t want to have to treat drunken injuries in the morning.”

“Aw come on, live a little!” Godwin says. Burke steps past Godwin, holding her DMR under her arm. “Burke, you going to join us?” Burke doesn’t even respond. She goes up to the hide above the ship to take watch. “Hmph. Bitch.”

Rutledge says, “Now that’s rude, Godwin. You gotta treat women more kindly.” Bryce steps up next to Rutledge, smiling at him as she holds two cups of grog in her hands. “Hey, sweetie, one of those for me?” She nods, holding it out for him. He takes it then quickly takes a swig. “Hm! That is good, I reckon.”

“Here.” Nielson offers a cup to Early. Early takes it, smiling gratefully.

“Oi. Where’s mine?” Whitney steps up next to Early, giving a sharp glare at Nielson. Nielson stares at her, then offers his cup. “Hmph.” She swipes it. “Thank ya, boyo. You ain’t so bad I s’pose.”

“Hey, who are these guys?” asks Banner. Several Deinos arrive out of the woods, dressed in feathers around their necks and dressed in bright white paints around their darkened faces. Shamen it seems. They come up to the Wife and start loudly calling up to the air, their tongues shaking outwards as the kids look up almost in fright at them.

“Louder than my ex-girlfriend,” Levy mutters. He looks at you. You look around and see Tierney waiting patiently for a group of Deinos to finish their drinking from a cask before she fills her cup. “Hey, Boss. You gonna join us for drinks?” asks Levy.

You decide to fill yourself up one cup. One should be fine for now. Everyone sits around the bonfire however as the shaman start chanting and marching around the bonfire. Apparently they must be treating it as their ceremonial flame to some kind of dance. “Delta, what are they doing?” you ask. The shamans chant, clacking their teeth and raising their bodies up as they dance around the fire. The other Deinos watch attentively, hissing and snarling as they give the shaman their full attention.

Meanwhile, everyone else sits around the bonfire, confused. “Uh.” Wexley blinks, confused. “So what are they doing?”

Delta scrawls out the image of the shamans dancing around the fire. And next, the image of a Deino war party assaulting a Rex. Oh, it’s a war dance, you see. It’s somewhat silly but you guess they only mean to wish everyone luck or bless them with the God’s powers. You take a sip of the booze, sighing deeply. Sweet and tangy.

And in return for the show, some meat gets held up to the fire to cook. You suppose dinner with the Deinos won’t be too bad. You feel a peck at your legs. Huh? You look down and see the kids looking up at you, baring their gummy mouths with nary a hint of teeth to them. Little buggers. The Wife steps up to you, nuzzling your arm, snarling a bit. Oh God, please.

Rutledge slaps your back, making you flinch. “So, buddy.” He wraps his arm around you, smirking. The Wife glares at him, silent. “Look at all this. Deinos not trying to kill us, we’re sharing food and joy with them. They’re making a war dance apparently too to bless us.” He looks at you, smirking. “I think we got it good right now.”

“Don’t count your chickens before they hatch,” you say. “Things can always go wrong.”

“Ah, they can,” he says. “But until then, why not enjoy yourself?” He glances over at Graves. She munches on some meat, sitting next to Tierney as well. Godwin and Connell talk with them, sharing a laugh over some drinks. “It’d make a good night.” Hmph.

You kneel down and poke at one of the Kid’s muzzle, the one with the dark spots under its eyes. The Kid sneers, trying to bite at you in response. The other Kids screech and poke at your hands, looking up at you with those big old eyes of theirs. If you didn’t already know what they’d grow up to be, you’d say they were adorable. The one with the orange sheen to its skin runs around you while the red one tries to grab at your hand with his claws. “Hey, now.” You pull your hand away, and it starts whining trying to grab at it. Oh, fine. You hold it out. It immediately bites your hand. “Ow!” You flinch, pulling it back. The red one cries again, whimpering as it tries to get at your hand. “No! You- you can’t do-“ The orange one hops onto your back, crying out triumphantly. “Hey!” You try to wrestle him off, first off because his toe claws are digging into your skin and secondly because you don’t want to be seen as being weak in front of these kids.

This frantic flailing around gets you falling onto your ass. The Kids immediately run into your lap. The Wife steps up, hissing at them before poking at you with her muzzle. Thanks, Wife. She’s certainly been raising them well. They’re only a day old at most and they’re already a bunch of hellions.

“Hey.” You look over and see Stoakes leaning over your shoulder, smiling. “Your kids are pretty cute, boss.”

“They’re not my kids,” you say. The orange one hops out of your lap then nibbles at Stoakes’ boot. Stoakes giggles, stepping away. The red and the dark spotted one hop over to her too, confused. The runt meanwhile settles into your lap, resting his head on your thigh. Well, now you can’t get up.

“Can I pick one of them up?” she asks. The Wife snarls at her, baring her teeth. Stoakes backpedals quickly. “Oh okay! Nevermind, nevermind I was just-“

“Hold on, hold on.” You pat the Wife’s leg, making her look at you. You gently motion for her to step away. The Wife hisses loudly, swishing her tail left and right as she steps back. You look at Stoakes. “Go on. Just be careful.” Stoakes nods. She kneels down, then gently picks up the orange one.

“Aw! Look at you!” The orange one screeches, kicking his legs, wagging his tail as he’s hoisted up into the air by Stoakes. “You’re so cute!” Stoakes leans in, aiming to nuzzle him. But the Orange one bites her nose. “Ow! Okay! Okay! You’re a biter, haha!”
>>
>>3372251
“They’re like little puppies.” Wexley comes over too, smiling at them. “Ain’t you just the cutest little number.” Wexley pats the head of the red one, to which the red one tries to bite at his finger. “Ah, jeez. What is it with Lizards and biting things?” The dark spotted one screeches at Wexley, running around him.

The Wife still continues to stand guard, clearly not trusting them to handle her babies with care, but she knows you trust them. So she has to as well. Delta steps alongside her, hissing amusedly to which the Wife bites at him. Delta screeches back at her, clearly displeased. Graves comes over, quickly taking a swig of her drink. “Aw, you’re an actual Daddy now.” The runt purrs, resting itself in your lap. “This one’s a little scraggly though. Definitely not as energetic as the other ones.”

“We’ll fix him,” you say. You gently poke at the Runt’s head. It purrs, shivering as it curls up inside of your lap for warmth. The little fella certainly reminds you of somebody. You look over and see the Shamen finish their war dance, crying out to the sky, their hands up as if begging for the sky for the blessings of victory. All the humans start clapping at the spectacle. And as if to cap things off, more casks of booze are opened up. One is rolled up to the bonfire and opened for all the humans to drink out of.

“Shit.” Banner takes a cup for himself, quickly chugging it all down. “Ah! That’s good stuff!”

“These Deinos know exactly what we need!” Godwin proclaims. Everyone starts grabbing more cups of ale. Hood reaches into his satchel and pulls out a tablet. “Hey, what’s that?”

“It’s Cope’s tablet,” he says. You look over, curious. Graves does too. “I found it off his body, figured he ain’t gonna use it.”

“Man, ain’t that looting?” asks Connell.

“Ah, he’s not going to miss it,” says Hood. “Besides. He’s got some music on this thing.” He hits play on a track, and out comes a bit of music that immediately catches the attention of the Deinos. It really hits you now however. It’s been –ages- since you’ve heard any kind of music that wasn’t just people singing. Hood claps his hands, grinning as he starts shaking and swinging to the beat before offering a hand to Graves. “Shall we dance?”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFjR4GkqFJU

Graves looks at you, quirking her brow. “Why you looking at me?”

She shrugs. “Figured you’d be jealous.” She quickly chugs down the remainder of her cup, then takes Hood’s hand. Rutledge too pulls Bryce up to dance as well and the two start dancing a jig to the music. Everyone claps, laughing and singing to the beat. You watch them go. And watching all this happen, it feels as if all the stress and worry from the past few weeks is immediately washing away too. You’re forgetting you’re trapped on this planet. The Deinos curiously and near confusedly watch as people start dancing to the music, standing up. Only Tierney remains sitting on a log, watching the bonfire by herself.

You plop yourself down beside Tierney, smiling a bit. “How you doing, Tierney?” You gently stroke the Runt’s head, trying to get her attention. She looks at you, squinting her eyes a little skeptically. “Noticed you ain’t dancing. Don’t know how to dance?” She shrugs, looking down at the Runt. “Want to pet him?”

“Sure.” Tierney reaches out for him. The Runt whimpers, making her hesitate for a second, before she gently puts two fingers on his head. The Runt looks up then tries to bite at Tierney’s fingers. “Ow!” Tierney flinches back, staring at him. “Why do they always bite things they don’t know?”

“Must be a Lizard thing,” you remark. You scoot closer to her. “Come on, you can join the party, lighten up a bit.”

Tierney says, “Ooooh, I mean…”

“You know how to dance?” you ask.

Tierney tilts her head away, trying to pet the Runt more. “I mean, I can. But I’m not sure I should.”

“Come on. It’ll be fun.” You stand up, then start shaking your hips, still holding the Runt in your arms. “There, see, left, right. Left, right.” Tierney looks at you, complete confusion, surprise, and even some disgust in her eyes. “See? It’s easy.”

Tierney starts laughing a bit, covering her mouth. “You look horrible! Haha!” She takes another sip from her cup, then puts it down. “Okay, let me show you, okay?” She stands up too, then claps her hands and starts grooving her body to beat. “Like so, okay?” You blink, seeing her flex and bend like a wave in the ocean. She snaps her fingers, guiding her hips left and right over to the dance floor. “Follow me. Follow my lead.” You step closer to her, trying to follow her lead. People start taking looks at her, staring as Tierney starts losing herself to the music.

“You- you’re good at dancing!” you say, in sheer disbelief.

She smiles, snapping her fingers again. “A little.” She pauses a little, looking at you. “I mean, haven’t had too many opportunities but uh… you know.”

Wexley leans over, smirking. “Mind if I have this dance then, Tierney?” Tierney blinks, surprised by the advance.

“Go on! Have fun, Tierney!” Tierney looks at you, then looks at Wexley. Wexley bows like a gentleman, offering his hand.

“Don’t leave a gentleman hanging, please!” Wexley begs. Tierney giggles, then takes his hand. Wexley quickly sweeps her off her feet, spinning her around before they go dancing back into the crowd. Much as you’d like to get a dance with Tierney, you still have to check on someone. You decide to go climbing up the ladder into the tree hide. And there you see Burke looking northwards into the woods.

“You see anything?” you ask.

Burke puts down her binoculars, looking at you. “Nah.”

You come up behind her, kneeling down. “You know, there’s a party going on down there. Not going to join in?”

“Nah,” she says, more firmly. Well, what a rain of joy she is. You sit down next to her. She looks at you, a frown on her face. “Look, parties aren’t exactly my thing.”

“Oh, no. I get it,” you say. “You’re too cool for parties. You’re more of a loner type that likes to sit in the corner, drink a beer with yourself, glare at everyone, and just be by yourself. I know the type.” You lean against the tree, smirking. “I’m that type.”

Burke stares at you, unamused. “Actually, last party I was in when I was like… six?” she says. Oh. Better excuse. “And even then, the party was for me managing to not get arrested by the parole officers. “Besides, nobody’s very fond of my presence down there anyway. I think they’ll enjoy a break from me.”

“Oh, you don’t know that,” you say. You fold your arms. “They probably miss you down there.”

“Well if they do, they aren’t showing it.” She leans close to you. “Besides. Men who haven’t had sex with a woman in a while and booze and a situation like the one we’re in right now? I’d rather not be around for the fallout.” She makes a decent point. But you trust the men to be mature enough not to give into base instinct. You shake your head, looking out into the woods. They’re calm and quiet by now. Rain thankfully hasn’t come yet. But it may soon. Who knows.
>>
Burke is quiet. You’re quiet too. There’s not much to say if she’s not willing to come down.

“I’m sorry.” You blink, looking at her.

“What?”

“I’m sorry,” she says. She glances at you. “For… you know.” She makes a finger gun to you, mouthing a bang. “I know you probably won’t forgive me for doing something like that. But I just want you to know that… I was wrong. And I guess Lieutenant Harrell probably didn’t deserve that.” You look down. Nobody’s in earshot. You look back at her, nodding.

“What makes you say that?” you ask. “Seems like you’re coming out of nowhere with this.”

Burke says, “I had a chitchat with Stoakes during our training this morning.” You blink, tilting your head. “Stoakes told me a lot about Harrell. Seems like she’s the only person torn up about him and…” She sighs. “She misses him. And…” She sighs, rubbing her head. “Much as I don’t want to think it was a mistake, I feel… she made me feel guilty, okay? Just a little bit.”

“At least you feel guilty. I’d have been concerned if you felt no remorse.” You also think back on what you immediately did to her afterwards. It was like there was real fear in your ears that you’d actually kill her. Maybe she’s only saying this to get on your good side. There’s always that possibility. Of course, right now that doesn’t matter too much. “At least there’s not going to be much infighting. But good Christ, I didn’t want those two to die or anything. I hate the losing people.”

“We’re not in a position where everyone is going to leave,” she says. “This isn’t some holomovie. People will die, we just have to accept that.” You shrug, sort of agreeing. You’re just not prepared for the idea that someone will die under your watch yet. Maybe you will be if it happens. What happened with Harrell and Cope was different. Especially Cope. He was an asshole to the end. Harrell was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It makes you sick to the stomach however thinking about how you basically led him to his death. “All the same, I think they got it lucky. They got to die quick and easy and before things go to shit. Which I’m sure they will.”

“How do you know?” you ask.

“I’ve seen the way Grimshaw treats people. Then Godwin is the only other one who knows our secret and who knows if he’s trustworthy. Nielson and Delta will be checking on their options tomorrow too. Then there’s Tierney.” Graves shakes her head at her mentioning. “Boo. Let me tell you something. Tierney is actually starting to scare me.”

You snicker. “Her?”

Burke nods. “Her.” You stop snickering. Burke does not look amused or even particularly angry. In fact, she looks downright frightened. “You know, Grimshaw did say those things to Tierney. I know you heard that. But it was like…” She snaps her fingers. “On.”

“On?” you say.

“It was like watching someone just snap. I’ve seen it before. People try to hide behind others but deep down, they turn into vicious monsters the minute things don’t go their way,” she explains. “Listen, Boo.” She leans in close to you, putting her hand on yours. “Tierney might look cute, defenseless, or even begging for some way to get stronger.” She pokes your chest. “But deep down inside, she’s a monster.”

“She’s been through a lot, Burke. I found her in a locker. She’d been up all night listening to people’s screams and Lizards eating people,” you explain.
>>
>>3374763
“That’s probably what made her that way,” Burke says. “Look, I’m no psychiatrist. I don’t know how to fix her. Just be careful. Okay?” She scoots away from you. “Now, I gotta get back to watch, okay?”

“Alright,” you say. “You sure you don’t want to come down and party with us? I can take watch for you if you want.”

Burke says, “It’s not for me. Really.” She shakes her head. “You do you.” Well… fair enough. You look down and see the partying is slowing down a bit anyway. Nielson holds hands with Early by the bonfire while Whitney apparently enviously paces behind them, staring at the two. Rutledge too lets Bryce rest her head in his lap, whistling the night away to a tune of quiet comfort. Everyone else continues games of chugging the booze as best as they can. And as for Tierney, she claps along encouragement with Wexley, Graves, and Morrison as they watch two Deinos mock spar with each other to demonstrate how they fight. She seems happy.

Seems at least.

You slide down the ladder, looking around. You see Grimshaw stumble around, having apparently drunk too much before falling face first into the mud, groaning in some amounts exhaustion and glee. That booze must be something. Thank God you’ve only drank one. You’re only feeling just the slightest of buzzes from it now that you’ve had time to process it. Can’t imagine what everyone else is feeling.

Graves turns around to you and says, “Hey, hey, it’s the boss!” Her cheeks are flush and her eyes are definitely indicative of being under the influence. Everyone turns around and cheers your arrival. “Come to see who’s going to win?” The two Deinos butt heads with each other, literally. They keep their claws close to their chest, and their toe claws up and away, apparently not intending to seriously harm one another. “My money’s on the guy with the blue paint.”

“You got money?” you ask jokingly.

“Eh, spare change,” she mutters.

Connell says, “I bet you that old Blue there is gonna get choked out, watch this!” The blue painted one faces off against the yellow painted one. In a sudden shift, the blue one pulls back and lets the yellow one overrun himself and trip into the mud. Blue jumps up and pounces on him, wrestling him into the ground. “Wait! No! Gah!” Connell throws his arms down, disappointed.

“Ha! Get me another drink, garcon!” Graves shouts at him.

Tierney says, “They’re really good fighters those Deinos!” She too looks a little on the drunk side, probably has at least a few drinks in her. The two Deinos continue wrestling until the yellow cries out, apparently submitting. The blue one gets off, helping the yellow one to his feet. “Aw look, sportsmanship!”

“Boo!” Godwin shouts. “Kill him!” He gives a thumbs down. “No mercy!”

“Shut up!” Hood slaps upside the head. “That’s sportsmanship right there!” Everyone starts applauding them as they walk to the casks for another drink.

“Speaking of sport though!” Graves nudges you. “Drinking contest.”

“What?” You blink.

“Drinking contest,” she says. “Don’t worry, I can drink the paint off of a Starship! This booze is nothing to me!” she says, spilling a bit out as she gestures wildly.

“How many have you already had?” you ask.

“Oh, not many, like… ten,” she mutters. “I’ll give you a handicap.”

> “Sure, a friendly contest won’t hurt.”

“Sure. A friendly contest won’t hurt.” You take your empty cup, saluting her. She salutes back. The two of you walk over to the nearest cask where several Deinos are already drinking out of. Everyone crowds around you all. Tierney pats your arm, as does Morrison. They’re firmly on your side while everyone else crowds behind Graves. They clearly favor her. Hmph. Now you’re starting to feel a little bit like the underdog. The Deinos watch, confused as to what’s happening. The two of you fill your cups again, tip them against each other, then chug.

The first shot hits you like a freight train. Okay, the first drink you had wasn’t so bad. The second however is already feeling like you just had straight whiskey out of the bottle. It’s still good to taste though but holy heck. She looks at you, pouting. “What’s the matter, boss?”

“Nothing,” you say. You again fill your cups. Once more unto the breach. Another chug. Second one. Graves doesn’t look phased. And you won’t be either.

“Be careful,” says Morrison. “I heard Graves even spikes her drinks with roofies for fun.”

“I did that once in college!” Graves shouts indignantly. “I thought I told you never to tell people that!” She blushes intensely, furious at her secret being exposed. “Didn’t even taste good anyway!” Well, now you know you’re facing stiff competition. She tugs on her jacket, grimacing as you grab another drink. Down the hatch.

“Come on!” Tierney encourages you. “Take her down, for me!”

“Yeah, take her down for her!” Levy mockingly says.

“You’re next,” you say, pointing to him. Graves spits on the ground, hissing and baring her teeth.

The Wife comes up, snarling at you. “Here.” You hold out the Runt to the Wife. “Hold my kid.” The Wife takes the Runt into her claws, looking at him before looking at you. She then steps back, apparently baffled that you just did that.

You take up another drink. At this point they’re all starting to bleed together. The cask has gone from three quarters full to just about below halfway. Graves wobbles a bit in place while you struggle to stand unassisted. Tierney and Morrison are doing their best to keep you on their feet without deliberately holding you up. “Come on… Daddy!” Graves slUs out. “Yooou… just a eunuch anyway.”

eunUcCh!? “Frak off,” you say, feeling thE BUzz to your head coming clean oh God swirling in your eyes “little SChooLgirl”

Graves “I BeT ya Can’t even finish that last drink”

Tierney lOOK “are you okay?”

“Fine”

Shallow Graves “go on I dare YOU DRINK”

“corprol?” she says

Oooohhhhh things fade

You blink, feeling your head coming to. You groan, holding your head. It’s like someone just drove an axe into your skull. Goddamn it! You sit up and find yourself on a bedroll. And yet you were in the Armory. Next to you is a bucket full of vomit and… something. The scent basically destroys whatever drunken sensations you have left. You grab your canteen and take a quick drink of water too. Good God. What the hell happened last night!?

“Hey. You.” You blink, then see Burke sitting a chair by the door, metal pipe resting in her arms. “You’re finally awake.” Oh God. You look around, then see everyone else. Hood, Banner, Levy, Smitty, Godwin, Grimshaw, Connell… they all lie around, groaning and whimpering from the intense hangovers. You blink, holding your gut. It’s a rumbling now, shit. Shit. “You drank quite a bit last night.”

“What happened?” you ask.
>>
>>3377463
“Nothing important,” says Burke. “Tombs called me asked me to guard you all here so none of you did anything too bad. Then he pissed off and went to diddle Stoakes or something.” That’s fair. He’s got a good head on his shoulders but… You hold your head, grimacing. You look at her. You didn’t, did you? She tilts her head. “No, you did not get laid.”

Oh.

Um. Well, that’s a little disappointing, actually. But at least you don’t have to worry about that. You blink, feeling something come up. Oh shit. You lean over and immediately expel your guts out into the vomit bucket. So that’s why that’s there! Good Christ, augh! You finally stop after a minute of this, feeling some chunks still in your throat and gullet. That’ll wash out with some water but… oh God.

“You’re a party animal, Boo,” she says. “Almost makes me wish I had gone drinking too.”

“Shut up,” you mutter.

You sigh, rubbing your face with a splash of cold water from your canteen. “Okay, first off. Where’s Nielson? He’s supposed to be working on that thing with Delta.” Burke stares at you, then stands up out of her chair and opens the door. You follow out of the door with her as she shuts it tight. The two of you then walk on over to the barracks, and from there she opens the door and leads you to one of the covered up tents.

There, she pulls up the flap.

Inside is Nielson, naked and fast asleep under some sheets. Curled up next to him is Early, clearly naked and asleep. And on his other side too is Whitney, also naked but a little more agitated. “Close the bloody curtains ya cow.” She shuts her eyes tight, curling up in a fetal position next to Nielson. Burke looks at you. Oh. Well. Kudos to Nielson then. The boy made it. She opens an eye at you and Burke. “Y-… you know, I only did this cuz the drink made me.”

“Yeah, sure,” Burke says. She shuts the flap, then looks at you. “To be fair, she was pretty drunk.” Yeah, you figured. You’re a little jealous now though. How come he gets a threesome and you get locked in a room with the other guys? Now you’re feeling robbed of all things. “Come on. I’ll take you to the medbay.” Thank God.

A short walk to the medbay later, you find Graves talking with Morrison. Rutledge as well takes a deep drink of coffee, another cup of it next to him. “And you’re sure we didn’t do anything?” asks Morrison, rubbing his sweaty neck as he looks at Graves with fright.

Graves sighs, wearing only a tank top and her short bottoms. “No, we did not,” she mutters. “Surprisingly, given how much alcohol there was out last night, I did not get frakked by anybody or anything. Much to my eternal detriment. Maybe I’m just too picky or I have too much respect for you, Morrison. Aside from Daddy over here, I’d actually let you have a go at me.” Morrison looks at her, then shrugs, apparently silently agreeing with that.

“Graves,” you say. “Coffee.” She holds out a ready made mug for you. “Thank you.” You quickly take it and take a deep drink of the hot burning liquids. You’ll have to savor this. There aren’t many coffee rations in the C-Rations to spare. “You okay?”

“Dandy,” she says. “If you’re looking for Tierney, she’s over there.” She points behind her. You see Tierney on a table, curled up underneath a blanket, groaning in pain and misery. “Don’t worry, we can thank Morrison and Tombs for making sure nobody was taken advantage of while there was drink around. Though, from what I understood, Tombs ducked out to give Stoakes the business, I think that’s why he’s missing. And thank God too because Joffrey is still alive!”

Joffrey sits up, taking a drink of the juice from last night. “What joy being alive,” he mutters.
>>
>>3378502
Graves looks at you. “He’s a party animal.” Clearly. She folds her arms. You look at her, and your eyes quickly glance down at the cleavage evident in her tank top before making eye contact again. “Feeling alright, Daddy?”

“Yeah. What’s with the getup?” Her legs are fully bare for you to see. And even before then, you caught a glimpse of buttcheek from her undershorts. “I thought you said had pretty white panties for me.”

“Ha ha,” she says. “Now you want to flirt while everyone is nursing hangovers. My shit’s in the wash, I vomited all over myself thank you very much for caring.” Of course. She rubs her head, sighing. “Just so you know, we’ve accounted for everyone, everyone is here. No one is missing. And thank God. The last thing we frakking need is a drunken adventure through the jungle looking for someone like it’s New Atlanta.” Fair enough. You really don’t want this life or death situation suddenly turning into something like that. Though, you’re still kind of miffed that nothing happened.

Don’t get you wrong, you’re –grateful- nothing happened. Drunken sexual misadventures are not something you want to deal with. On the –other- hand though… You look down at Graves, a very inviting sight all around. And unfortunately not something you got to experience last night because you drank too much. Same with Tierney. Given how much drink was going around in you, you likely would’ve caved if she made the advance but thank God that didn’t happen. “Anyway, Rutledge?”
>>
>>3378506
Rutledge rubs his forehead, smirking at you. “I was just about to look for you. We got something.” You walk up to him, hands on your hip. “This morning, a Deino came up to the camp. Delta translated for me. He says he spotted a patrol of Raptors moving from south to north along the beach.”

“The beach?” you ask. “Why? That’d take them through Deino territory. They have a village right on the coast too.”

“I understand their logic,” Rutledge says, taking a sip of coffee. “The beach is open, they only have to worry about attack from one side, and transportation is limited to how well they can handle wet sand. Still, from what Delta told me, a patrol usually precedes something bigger coming in. He’s theorizing to me at least that they’re going to try and set up a logistics chain along the beach to hopefully resupply the Hill, or potentially use it as a staging area to try and surround us from the sea.”

“And obviously we can’t let that happen,” you say. “What about inside the Swamp?”

“There’s another target of opportunity too,” he says. “East along the river, from what the Deinos told me too, they have supply trains going along the river bank towards the hill too. Those are more guaranteed. But because the route is a lot more hazardous, they’re better guarded. We’ve got a lot more coming in from Deino scouts this morning too. Seems even though we’ve just had a party, they’ve got information for us rolling in.” He gently punches your arm, grinning. “Our options are opening up. You got time for me to explain?”

You sigh, taking another drink of coffee. “Alright. Shoot.”

That is it for the weekend, thanks for reading and what not. I am so sorry for things slowing down significantly this week, I've been exhausted from a number things taking up my time. But we should get back to a better schedule next time we run however.

Hope you enjoyed yourselves. Go ahead and leave questions, comments, critique, etc. I thrive on it. We'll be back sometime this week.

Thanks for running. No worries about the pacing; RL stuff always comes first.
