You are Kurosaki Ichigo, and you're sixteen. When you're not busy being sixteen you've been taking on an increasingly active role in the Japanese afterlife, helping shepherd lost and wayward souls to what comes next and protecting them from soul-eating monsters called Hollows. At least that's how it all started. Things only got more complicated from there if you can believe that.

Which sometimes you can't.

Right now you're inside your own 'inner world', which itself is a statement that just a few months ago would have made less than no sense to you, dealing with two fragments of yourself manifest as two highly combative personalities. At least, they're usually combative. Right now they seem more focused on a shared interest.

“So there's two ways I can think of to make this work,” White declares, “and you'll be happy to know that both of 'em involve Ichigo getting the crap beaten out of him. So he should like it.”

“What are you thinking?” Old Zangetsu asks.

“The first possibility is that I could just beat the crap out of him for a while until he figures out how to improve his cero on his own,” White explains.

“That sounds like fun for you,” Old Zangetsu replies.

White laughs loudly. “Yeah, not gonna like I really hope he goes for that option.”

“And what's the other choice?”

“You get to fight him,” White explains. “Show him a little about what you can do. Hopefully knowing anything at all about being a quincy makes him better at doing creative shit with ceros.”

“And in that instance you don't have to do any of the work,” Old Zangetsu surmises. “So you enjoy that options as well.”

“Hey, not as much as getting to beat on him,” White frowns. “I'm not that lazy. I'm just particular about how I spend my time.”

“Mhm,” Old Zangetsu nods patronizingly. “I believe you.”

“I fucking hate you,” White grumbles.

“I'll work with the Old Man for now,” you declare. “Seems to me the best way of moving forward.”

“A wise choice,” Old Zangetsu bows his head. “You have seen my use of gintō already, for Wolke.”

“There are four techniques which I would consider still useful, which rely on shaping reishi based on Gintō. One is Heizen, an offensive spell creating a bounded field between four Gintō that have been thrown. The next two are Gritz, a technique for creating an enclosed barrier of silver, and Wolke which you have just seen.”

“The last is Sprenger, which uses five Seele Schneiders to create a five-pointed array. Within this array, an additional Gintō will trigger a massive explosion.”

You consider this new information... you were vaguely familiar with Gintō of course, but you haven't had much occasion to practice with them given that you live in the living world. Not exactly a lot of space, especially since Urahara returned to the Soul Society and his assistant seems to spend so much of his time absent.

Hey Queen, I started reading the archive after reading Claymore Quest. I almost can't believe I managed to catch up right before the final battle. You managed to make Bleach really fucking good, you should be proud.

Also, here's an omake idea: what if we had fallen for Okita way back then, instead of going down best cat's route?
I was also really looking forward to one of the earliest omake suggestions, Mirror Mirror, about what if Aizen was the one who found us at the very beginning, but it never ended up happening.

“You know, I don't think I've actually ever had the occasion to fill a gintō before?” you admit, somewhat startled by your own admission.

“I do know that,” Old Zangetsu informs you.

“Well, think you can show me how?” you press.

He produces a single gintō, flipping it in sequence between his fingertips from one side to the other, then back again. The whole time he stars you straight in the eyes.

“Maybe.”

“Then quit playing games and do so,” you demand, quickly losing patience with him.

“It is very simple,” Old Zangetsu insists, shutting his eyes. “There. I already did it for you to observe.”

“And you didn't think to explain?” you press. “Seriously, what would it cost you to just speak clearly about it for a couple of minutes?”

“Why should I explain it?” he counters. “For that matter how could I even hope to explain it? If one of your little sisters needed you to explain to her hot to breath, could you do it?”

>Because if you don't help me get stronger, we all die. What don't you get about that?”

“Fine,” you shrug. “I'll just have to do it without your damn help. I don't need you.”

You stare at your palm for several long seconds.

“Yes?” Old Zangetsu prompts you.

“I'm thinking!” you snap.

Zangetsu sighs.

It's been a while since you've seen her do it, but your mom has created reishi weapons in front of you before. You've seen Ishida do it plenty of times as well, it's a fairly basic quincy technique. And you'd hazard a guess that in order to practice using gintō here you'll need to create a silver tube to contain your reishi first.

If you can't manage that then you're probably screwed anyway.

How is it that mom did it... how is it that Ganjū tried to teach you kidō? With the orb? Maybe the same approach can work here?

“Why are you moaning?” Old Zangetsu demands after several minutes.

“Yeah,” White agrees. “It's kinda making me uncomfortable.”

“Haaaa!” you shout, and after a substantial effort you hold between your fingers a roughly-shaped silver object.

“Ha!” you shout again, this time in triumph instead of exertion. “Told you I could...”

An arrow blasts the lump of silver in an instant.

“The hell was that for!?”

“Do it again,” Old Zangetsu demands.

Grumbling, you struggle for several more minutes to replicate your initial feat.

Then, once complete, Old Zangetsu shoots it again. Of course he would.

The third time you're slightly faster.

The fourth time it's a little easier to shape.

The fortieth time, you actually feel like you do a good job.

“That was good, Ichigo,” Old Zangetsu commends you. “Enough to earn my acknowledgment, you do indeed have quincy heritage.”

“Was that ever in any doubt?” you demand.

“It was,” he admits, “at least in terms of your degree of aptitude. Think, Ichigo... do your sisters have the same kind of power your mother does?”

You ponder the question. “I gather Karin can see spirits, but Yuzu can't even do that much.”

“And yet you would expect to simply be able to use quincy powers that easily?” Old Zangetsu presses. “Part of being a quincy is in your blood, yes. That is certainly true. But much of it also has to do with random genetics, with your environment, with your instincts and your personality.”

“You are a fighter, raised to be the one who protects your family. Your sisters are not.”

“So why did I have so much trouble doing that?” you demand.

“Because you had to un-learn that which was unhelpful,” Old Zangetsu explains, making only a little bit of sense. “It will make sense to you, in time.”

You use Getsuga Tenshō all the time, and that requires you to compress reiatsu. You can even use cero capably enough despite not being anywhere close to full hollow. So how hard could this possibly be?

“I'm gonna compress some reishi into this tube,” you declare, “and then you're gonna tell me about all the stuff I can do with it afterwards.”

Then you nearly succeed in blowing your own hand off.

The gintō glows for an instant before disintegrating into a massive blue fireball that envelops your arm up to the wrist, and drives White into a fit of howling laughter. How the hell did it go that badly wrong, that quickly?

“That's not funny!” you snap at White, waving your hand to make sure that nothing has caught fire.

Even Old Zangetsu chuckles quietly. “You can use Getsuga Tenshō so this should be easy... that is what you thought, wasn't it? I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but it's not even close to being the same.”

“How so?” you growl. “Tell me.”

“With Getsuga Tenshō you have the blade which helps you to focus the attack,” Old Zangetsu explains, “and there is no penalty for using too much power. What you are looking to create is more like a 'battery', but even a gintō created by your own hand can only contain so much power before it becomes a tiny hand grenade instead.”

“So I need to improve my control, got it,” you frown.

Hang on... 'in your blood', is it? That's right, the spiritual power of a quincy is literally tapped through their blood. Your own Blut Vene has probably saved you a couple of times before without your even knowing it, so what if you let a little bit of your blood serve as a catalyst for filling a gintō? That way your reiatsu control, which is admittedly poor by quincy standards, won't get in the way.

You quickly create a new gintō, and bite the tip of your thumb.

Why is it every time you make a mistake you end up exploding?

Old Zangetsu shakes his head. “Clever, but your control over your Blut is totally inadequate to use it in such a way.”

“But that being said, it'd be a great way to punch up a cero,” White admits. “I'm a little bit impressed.”

So yet again, you've managed to 'fail forward', is that it?

>If you could use your Blut as an explosion after being wounded it would make a devastating surprise counterattack.

You decide to take White's suggestion, and quickly slit your palm to try it out.

“Gran Rey Cero!”

The blast charges quicker than a regular cero, by far, and the result is a constant, flickering stream of pure power in a violent shade of blue. It writhes like a living thing, tearing massive chunks out of the phantasmal surroundings before it burns itself out.

“Quite impressive,” Old Zangetsu admits.

White simply whistles. “You got it on the first try.”

“It seems that you have a natural talent for using such brutal powers,” Old Zangetsu muses calmly. “You had help with your shinigami abilities, and once those were established you became able to tap into your hollow abilities. Perhaps it is because of that order that command of my abilities still eludes you?”

“Then how is it I was able to create a gintō?” you counter.

“Being able to use the basics is a far cry from mastery,” Old Zangetsu insists.

“Maybe it's more like kidō than you quincy like to pretend?” White sneers.

Old Zangetsu shrugs. “It's possible.”

“I thought you said it wasn't like kidō!” you protest.

“I never said it wouldn't take some practice,” Old Zangetsu replies calmly. “For some, it takes more practice than others.”

>Then we'll practice. I'll get the hang of this sooner or later.

“So how do young quincies usually train to improve their control?” you ask. “My mom never really went into it... wanted me to have the chance to choose a 'normal' life I guess.”

Old Zangetsu considers your question for a moment, before offering his reply. “They would train to produce and maintain a reishi weapon of their own design. To create something with a specific design in mind requires the sort of skills one would have to build up to be a quincy anyway, and doing so first provides a definite goal along with easily defined measures of progress and eventual success.”

“Then that's what I'll do,” you declare.

“What sort of weapon do you intend to create?” Old Zangetsu presses. “You need to have a concept in mind.”

You decide on something that may prove to be a little complicated, but should be infinitely more useful than yet another weapon. Instead you set to work gathering reishi around your left wrist, wrapping it close to your skin like a tight-fitting gauntlet. For your first time the results were actually more impressive than you thought it would be, though that's not to say that it worked. No, you definitely lost control of it within seconds. But it was a pretty good start.

“Not bad,” Old Zangetsu commends you. “That is, assuming you were trying to create a gauntlet of some fashion. But tell me, what is it you plan to have that gauntlet do?”

“Block attacks,” you reply, throwing out the most obvious answer first. “I'd also like to store gintō there. As for actual weapons, you think it would be possible to use it like a seele schneider?”

Old Zangetsu shrugs. “I fail to see a reason why you could not. It is an invention of your own mind. It need not make sense to anyone else.”

The second time you try, it actually seems to take something approximating the shape you intended.

By the twelfth attempt, the result looks exactly as you pictured it in your mind: a segmented series of sliding metal plates laid over each other atop a white half-fingered glove, providing flexible overlapping coverage for your left arm from the knuckles almost up to your elbow. At the first there is a small opening to project the blade of a selee schneider, either straight forward from your fist or outward from your palm as one might hold a sword. On the underside of the wrist there's space for four gintō on a rack of sorts, though the ones present there now are empty.

“Interesting,” White muses. “Hey old guy, you ever seen anything like that before?”

“It's a rather unusual thing,” Old Zangetsu admits. “I've never heard of anything quite this... eccentric.”

“But hey,” White shrugs. “If it works it works, yeah?”

You decide now is as good a time as any to see how much this exercise has improved your abilities as a quincy, and produce four empty gintō tubes using your reishi. Then, you focus all your efforts on concentrating reishi and your own reiatsu inside those tubes, drawing the reishi from all around you into one tightly-compacted space. This time, it doesn't explode in your hand. Instead it buzzes slightly with little arcs of blue energy like lightning dancing around your hand.

Then, when the sides of the gintō feel prone to bursting from the pressure within, you seal it with a small silver plug.

After rolling it between your fingertips for several seconds, testing how well your work will hold, you slot it into the space on your new gauntlet. Repeating your success three times, you fill those spaces one at a time.

“It seems you have learned quite well,” Old Zangetsu compliments you. “Consider me suitably impressed.”

“So, think you can teach me about how to use these now?” you press. “That was the whole point, remember?”

“I think you have made enough progress,” he replies. “So which would you like to learn?”

You decide to try and learn Gritz, which Old Zangetsu billed as a combination binding and defensive spell. Both are areas where you're not exactly strong, so this will serve both ends.

“Show me Gritz,” you insist. “It sounds useful.”

Old Zangetsu produces a single gintō between his fingertips. “A sliver rod strikes the five-fingered stone bed... Gritz!”

The gintō aimed for your shoulder bursts into reishi, a thin film of silver surrounding you from five angles until it totally encloses you. So this is a gintō technique? The incantation was so much shorter than any kidō you've heard the chant for, and it'll combine very well with your new reishi weapon if you can figure out how to fire a gintō out of it at speed.

But that all hinges on you figuring out how to do it.

“So that was the incantation,” you frown as the technique comes apart.

“Do you think you can replicate it?” Old Zangetsu presses you.

In response you draw out a gintō of your own and hurl it. “A silver rod strikes the five-fingered stone bed: Gritz!”

The gintō does the exact same as when Zangetsu used it, enclosing him in a dome of silver reishi with a five-pointed cross etched deeply in the front.

Even White stares at you in surprise. “Well, that was unexpected.”

Zangetsu quickly slashes his way out of the barrier with a seele schneider.

“Very good, Ichigo,” Old Zangetsu nods approvingly. “Very good... it seems training to form a reishi weapon has given you an easier time with such techniques.”

“Maybe,” you admit.

You decide to put your newfound abilities to a test, and raise your left arm.

“A sliver rod strikes the five-fingered stone bed... Gritz!” you shout, but instead of throwing the gintō you propel it with a burst of reiatsu not unlike a cero or a heilige pfeil. The tube begins to open while it's in flight, swiftly enveloping Old Zangetsu with a speed totally different from that of a thrown weapon.

That's interesting... if you hit an incoming attack with that you could theoretically block it and trap your opponent inside with it. Depending on the attack that could be devastating, assuming your counter manages to withstand the force of that attack.

“Interesting,” Old Zangetsu muses, the expression on his for once betraying genuine interest. “What made you think to do that?”

“The original technique is too slow,” you shrug. Really, that should almost go without saying. “Why throw the gintō when I can shoot it?”

Old Zangetsu weighs your words carefully for several long minutes, before eventually nodding to himself. “You will likely be able to duplicate that trick with the other techniques as well, so long as you know the incantations.”

“Then teach me the incantations!” you press.

It takes some time, but with Old Zangetsu's help you manage to memorize the incantations for all of the gintō techniques he had suggested for you to learn. Whether you can use them effectively in combat remains to be seen however, as each one you only use the one time to demonstrate to Zangetsu... and to yourself as well... that you can do it.

Now, finally, you're at a level where you can say that you know how to use all of your powers at least to some extent. There's definitely room for improvement, but ideally that will always be the case.

Speaking of, Ive been wondering... Quincy techniques work by drawing in and controlling surrounding reishi, and A lot of Hollow powers seem to work off collecting and compressing the same, either internally or in the mouth or whatever.
Would it be possible to use those two things together somehow?

You decide that the best plan is to find a way to combine your quincy and hollow abilities into one technique that goes beyond what either one can do on its own. And you remember that the way quincies fight is by gathering reishi from their surroundings, and hollows use cero by hardening the power that their own bodies generate.

So what if you matched those techniques up together?

Trying it out is just a matter of extending your hand and drawing in reishi from all around, then hardening it.

“Cero!”

The blue blast isn't any different from a normal cero, either in terms of how quickly you charge it, how powerful it is, or how it moves when you release it. But it's a lot more efficient at very least, in terms of how much of your own reiatsu you have to use.

“Well that was underwhelming,” you sigh.

“It was a nice effort,” Old Zangetsu shrugs.

White rolls his eyes. “It wasn't a total waste of time.”

“Shit,” you mutter.

>I can't think of a way to combine my quincy and hollow abilities. Any ideas?

“I need to know more about my shinigami and hollow abilities,” you realize. “White, that means you're up.”

“Fuck you,” White replies.

You can only sigh... you really expected this, but it's still annoying. “Why?”

“Because you don't learn how to be a hollow, dumbass.”

“Then how do we do this?” you grumble.

White's response is predictable: he draws his sword.

You raise your fists and charge White, unleashing a trio of Bala as you close the distance. Your near-doppelganger easily weaves between the blasts and raises his sword.

“Bad move, Ichigo!” he sneers, bringing the blade down towards your left shoulder.

But rather than blocking or trying to avoid the blade you use a shunpō, and throw an uppercut from your left side at White's right wrist as it comes down. Then you follow up with a right straight aimed at his gut that he blocks with his left elbow.

“Bala!”

A point-blank blast from your right hand connects with White's chest, singing his clothing and knocking him back a few feet.

“That wasn't half bad,” White admits. “I forgot you're actually pretty scrappy when it comes to fighting with your fists.”

“Comes with growing up as a punk,” you smirk, shifting up your stance slightly. “Let's go!”

You continue throwing carefully-aimed punches where you can, smacking your fists against the sides of White's sword where you can't. It's difficult to make any headway, but it's impressive enough that you can hold your own.

Then White uses a Getsuga Tenshō.

You're not sure what possesses you to try it. Dodging the incoming Getsuga Tenshō would be easy enough to achieve, but somehow it just doesn't feel like the right plan. So instead you extend your left hand.

“What are you...” White begins.

The Getsuga Tenshō meets your palm and stops, crackling against your skin... or rather against an unseen force lying right atop it. After a moment you leverage your hand upward and send the attack skyward. In an instant, you slam your fist into White's gut.

He grunts, but as your blow lifts him off his feet he actually manages to land a solid kick on your chin in the same instant.

You rub your aching jaw, as White slowly straightens his back. “That was a good kick.”

“That was a good... whatever the fuck that was,” White replies, staring at you in surprise. “What the fuck was that?”

“I was just taking your advice,” you admit. “I was kinda hoping you'd know.”

“Is it possible... no...” he mutters with a frown. “There's no way.”

“That was Blut,” Old Zangetsu interjects. “But not the normal Blut Vene.”

“It was almost more like hierro,” White declares. “But you're right, it wasn't hierro.”

“Who cares what it was?” you interrupt, raising your fists again. “I just did what came naturally to me. What does it matter what we call it?”

White smirks, and Old Zangetsu manifests a bow in his left hand.

“That's exactly what we wanted to hear.”
