Finally after two years in the service of the Dark Queen Quintis you have finally been promoted. No more marching through filthy peasant villages administering the Queen's justice, this is your chance to rise through the ranks of her Majesty's armies and become one of her generals, or so you thought.

Being placed in a garrison out in the middle of nowhere wasn't the promotion you had imagined, but after the death of your commander, your rise through the ranks seemed that much more possible. Through your leadership, your garrison holds its ground through an assault and infiltration by rebel forces and manages to capture two of its heroes. After transporting the two of them to the Capital, Queen Quintis decided to promote you to Captain and to add you to her collection of personal agents.

Your first mission as an agent of the Queen was quite the ordeal, nearly dying to a shape shifting mage, getting stampeded by a mercenary cavalry charge, and getting shot full of arrows as well as stabbed lot. In the end however you stopped the mercenaries attacking imperial caravans, and uncovered that they had been hired by the the rebels to disrupt trade between imperial, and desert merchants.

This is not the end of your troubles however upon returning to the Capital, you find that the rebels weren't just sitting on their hands while you were gone. They had advanced much closer to the Capital and would likely be on your doorstep in weeks. Not one to sit on her hands, the Queen has given you a mission to help prepare for the coming battle.

“Alright, but you’ve got one shot at this, you slip up and that’s it.” you warn Aborea before heading back to the training grounds. The lieutenants had wasted no time in preparing since you had left. They had turned a large portion of their drill area into a shallow lake with just enough water to create a solid ice surface. Meanwhile not too far away in a little pond, Long’s crossbowmen were practicing shooting at targets on the shore line from little boats which were being rocked back and forth to simulate rough waters. Most of the shots were failing to hit the targets and every shot that thumped in to the dirt would be followed by a steady stream of curses from the shooter.

With the grounded readied you watch Aborea step up to the edge of the shallow lake, rubbing her hands together she kneels down and places her palms on the surface of the water. With none of the usual incantations or gestures Mildri makes, Aborea begins to freeze the water. It takes only a few moments for the shallow lake to turn into a field of solid ice. Standing back up Aborea shoots you a grin over her shoulder “See I told you I could do it.”

You couldn’t argue with her results she had done what you’d asked and the ice field looked stable and smooth to your eyes. Ignoring her comment for now, you order the troops onto the ice to begin their combat drills. The results are understandably bad. The soldiers probably spent more time getting back up than drilling. A sword slash blocked would send the recipient sliding backwards over the ice. A normal step into a strike would slide out from under the attacker causing him to fall down hard onto the ice. As the training went on and men accrued bruises, you accrued many angry looks and threats muttered under breaths from the troops.

“You’re going to have mutiny on your hands Captain if you don’t do something,” Aborea teases.

“Oh really now, and do you have any suggestion on what that something I should do is?”

“Get out there with them and spar, I could be your opponent.”

“You my opponent, do you even know how to fight?”

Aborea flattens her hand and a thin shingle of ice forms around her hand and then extends outward thinning and stopping at a sharp point at about the length of a shortsword. “Mildri may not know how to fight Baldr, but I do.”

>You wouldn’t ask your men to do anything you wouldn’t be willing to do yourself, spar with them (Spar with Aborea? [Yes/No])

“Very well then, we can spar. I need the training anyway since I’ll be with them on those boats.”

“Great, let’s go Baldr,” Aborea teases again this time her voice carries a slightly malicious tone to it.

As you step out onto a clear patch of ice, Aborea creates a second ice blade for her other hand, additionally a thick coating of ice forms around her chest, shin and arms like pieces of armor. Noticing the two of you out on the ice a few of the soldiers slow their own fights so they can keep an eye on your fight. “Ready Captain?” Aborea asks.

“Ready,” you respond and the fight commences.

You lunge forward only to have your back foot slide out from under you. Falling onto your knee, you continue your attack swinging your glaive outward still trying to hit Aborea. She simply leans back and watches your swing pass by her. She then closes with you, fast. Seemingly gliding across the ice she gets in close to you and smacks your helmet with her ice blade. While the attack itself didn’t hurt much, your pride was stung severely by Aborea’s blow. Gliding across the behind you, you watch as Aborea adopts the strangest stance you’ve ever seen. Never holding still Aborea’s body was constantly moving, swaying on the ice, while her gaze remained fixed on you. As you rise back onto your feet and turn to face Aborea, she giggles and flashes you a smile “Pretty good aren’t I Captain, but wait till you see what else I can do.” She taunts as she glides across the ice towards you.

Refusing to let Aborea’s taunts to get to you, you charge at her again being careful of your footing this time. As you close, the ice blade on Aborea right hand thickens and reforms into a club. Keeping your eyes on her as she glides in on your left side, you prepare slide over and hit her as she passes. You never get the chance though as shifting suddenly Aborea comes up on your left. Hooking your leg with her ice blade, she knocks it out from under you, leaving you off balance with one foot in the air. Then using all her strength and the momentum she had built up, Aborea slams her ice club into your chest knocking the wind out of you and causing you to land on flat on your back. Over the clatter of your collapse, you can hear the soldiers around you wince and few of them laugh. Looking over, you can see that most of the drilling soldiers had stopped and come to watch your fight. You watch as a few of the soldiers exchange money some already realizing they’d bet on the wrong horse.

Clambering back to your feet and sucking air back into your deflated lungs, you face off against Aborea again. “Captain you don’t look so good, are you sure you want to continue?” The false pity in Aborea’s voice is almost enough to make your blood boil, but you try to keep calm as you move silently toward her. “I tried to warn him.” Aborea says showboating to the crowd of soldiers before advancing on you again.

As soon as confidence and pride exceed reason, the battle is lost. In your first clash, you realized that moving on the ice wasn’t going to be possible for you right now. In your second, you figured out that watching Aborea’s core and chest was the key to determining her movements. In your third, you struck back. As Aborea closed in you dug in waiting to see her move, she was going for the same move again feign in on your left then striking right. This time however, as she strikes out for your foot, you knee her in the gut doubling her over and knocking the wind out of her. Stunned and unable to respond, you smash your glaive into her chest cracking the ice armor and sending Aborea flying back and skidding across the ice until she comes to a halt at the edge of the ice rink.

There is another set of winces and a few cheers from the crowd of soldiers as Aborea skids across the ice. Money changes hands again heading back the other way as those who’d bet on you took their money back. Now the crowd was energized, they had a real fight on their hands now. A mix of cheers for both you and Aborea rose up some egging you on to finish her off and others for Aborea to get back up and into the fight.

As Aborea gets back on her feet, you feel something has changed about her, and you know exactly what it is as soon as she locks eyes with you again. Gone from her face was the happy taunting smile. Now the smile on her face was full of insane vindictive anger. She no longer slid around on the ice instead now, she walked purposely toward you, an icy wind emanating from her chilling you to your bones. It looked like she had finally gotten serious.

The spectating soldiers feeling the cold wind began to back up and away from the two of you not wanting to be caught up in what would likely be a big clash. Readying yourself once again, you face off against Aborea

With no fancy gliding around this time, Aborea slashes at you her strikes no longer playful and seeming to be aiming to actually injure you. You like it better this way, you know that her strikes are meant to injure so you are able to see them coming and effectively knock them aside. She doesn’t let up though and you are nearly struck in the side by one of her slices. Taking the blow on your breastplate instead, you capitalized on the failed hit and land a blow of your own on the side of her breastplate of ice. The only difference between your two strikes was that you swung harder and it shows. Aborea skids sideways from your blow and shards of ice fall off of her side. Managing to stay on her feet, she slides to a halt only a little ways away from you.

Judging from her heavy breathing and loosely hanging limbs Aborea didn’t have much strength left to fight you with. Then again, you didn’t either.

>Continue the match. You were never one to leave a fight unfinished.

With Aborea’s change in stance and demeanor, you reconsider your tactics. You were getting used to standing on ice, so you were willing to try something inspired by Aborea’s own attacks. Sliding on the ice you make your way toward Aborea, picking up significant speed as you approach. Noticing your approach Aborea picks up speed as well and begins to run at you. Closing with each other extremely quickly, Aborea doesn’t have time to react as you spring your attack. Using the extra reach your glaive affords you, you slash at Aborea forcing her to block the attack and leaving her unable to respond as you lower your shoulder and slam into her, your pauldron making solid contact with the side of her face. With all the momentum you’d built up on your approach you simply bowl her over. Aborea’s feet shoot out from under her and she lands with a thump on to the ice. Jamming your glaive into the ice you grind to a halt. Aborea lay on the ice unresponsive while the crowd of soldiers lets out a mix of cheers and curses as money is shifts hands a final time and the lieutenants break up the crowd.

You make your way back out to Aborea and kneel down next to her. You had knocked her out and judging by the swelling, given her a nasty bruise on the side of her face. Picking her up you get off the ice and lay her out on the ground outside the ice rink. As you set her down she lets out a groan and her eyes open only to squeeze shut in pain again. “Oh, my face,” groans Mildri.

“You’ll be alright, I don’t think I broke anything, but you’ll get quite the bruise after the swelling stops.”

“I let her take control on one condition, she wouldn’t get us hurt and I come back to this.” She says rubbing her face.

“Didn’t you try to stop her?”

“I tried to talk her out of fighting you, but she wouldn’t listen. Then once the fight got going and our blood got pumping there was nothing I could do she was in total control.”

“You’re in control of everything now though right?”

“Yes, but I don’t want to be, everything hurts and I’m exhausted from her using too much magic. If she thinks she can hide inside and pout while I have to deal with her mess she’s got another thing coming.” Mildri closes her eyes and you presume that she’s about to drag Aborea back out.

>Last post of the night

“Alright! Fine! You don’t need to be a bitch about it.” Aborea shouts as she reemerges. Realizing where she was and that you were right next to her Aborea shoots you a glare “Did she pull me back out just so you could gloat?”

“No, she wanted you to take responsibility for your actions and deal with the pain from the bruises you picked up.”

“Thanks for those by the way, they make it hard to talk.” Aborea says shifting her jaw around and wincing at the movement.

“You’re welcome and thank you for the spar it was fun and I learned a lot about fighting on ice.”

“Well I’m glad my suffering was of some benefit to you,” Aborea says bitterly.

“It was very beneficial, but I’m not the only one who needs your help,” you gesture to the other sparing soldiers.

“No, everything hurts and I’m tired, I’m just going to go back to the inn.”

“C’mon shouting at soldiers will make you feel better and will help you blow off some steam. It always works me.”

Aborea gives you a pensive look before letting out a loud groan and rising to her feet. “Alright, I’ll teach these idiots how to walk on ice,” she says as she walks over to the crowd of drilling soldiers.

The rest of the day goes well enough. You watch and listen to Aborea as she shouts and gives advice to the troops, knocking over any trooper who snickers at her face or makes a wise crack behind her back. If she lost some of her attitude she’d make a fine sergeant you think to yourself. By the end of the day both the troops and you are tired, dirty, and bruised all over. As you head back to the in with a less pouty Aborea, you think about what you’ll do this evening.

>Only post of the night

Gregory promised to teach you something about the healer’s arts and you wanted to learn, that’s it. You just wanted to learn from a healer with no other motivations, no sir you weren’t there to check on Selenas.

Arriving at the healers’ hospital, you are led back to the room where Gregory had been mixing his antidote earlier that day.

“Ah so you’ve come back, good, well let’s get started then.” Gregory pulls out a stack of leather squares, a sewing needle, and thread. At incredible speed he stitches together two squares of leather “Stitching wounds closed is a healer’s bread and butter, so let’s get sewing.” The healer takes you through sewing techniques and the proper way to sew wounds shut before letting you loose on the leather squares. “You make progress yet it is slow and you prick your fingers more often than you stab through the leather. After struggling for a bit, you attempt to change your luck by flipping the coin of fate to no avail you just can’t seem to get the knack of it.

By the end of the night your fingers had more holes in them than the badly sewn together pieces of leather you’d been working on. “Don’t worry too much.” Gregory assures you “Lots of healers start out with bleeding fingers, you’ll get the hang of it.”

“I hope so, or my patients will have more holes in them then when I started,” you remark as you leave for the night, but not before you stop by to check on Selenas. Even though you had checked on her earlier that day, you just couldn’t help but check on her again. She had not changed, she was still asleep and looked sick as a dog, her body struggling to fight off both the remnants of poison and the infection. You spend a few minutes with her whispering encouragement and letting her know that you are there, before heading off to bed.

Over the next four days you repeat this kind of process spending your days training with the soldiers and going over the minutia of what your plan would involve. At night you continued your healer training and while it was slow going, you were learning. After every session with Gregory you would visit Selenas and keep her company. After Gregory had finished the antidote and given it to Selenas, her condition improved immensely, although she did still sleep most of the time and was never awake when you were around. As for Aborea and Mildri, after your command for them to get along they had taken the time to get to know each other a little more and things hadn’t gone well. They had almost no chemistry whatsoever. Whatever Mildri liked and wanted to do, Aborea liked and wanted to do the opposite. Over the four days more than one of their arguments had spilled out of control, out of their mouths, and into your lap. One of those fights had been over time in control. Aborea had spent her time in control with you, helping soldiers to fight on ice and by the end of the day when Mildri would take over, she would be absolutely exhausted and unable to do the things he enjoyed.

“It’s not fair, it’s my body and I shouldn’t have to spend all of my time in control of it exhausted.” Mildri shouts, not realizing her internal talk and become external. “Baldr’s soldiers are doing just fine fighting on ice without your instruction. Fine then I’ll ask him then.”

As an exasperated Mildri turns to you, you begin to think of how to handle this. It was true that the troops were fighting on the ice just fine without Aborea’s help, but you’d noticed that many of the soldiers had become used to Aborea’s instruction and simply enjoyed having friendly spars with her. Mildri did have a point though it was her body after all and Aborea had no real claim to it. Then again, why should you have to deal with this, you’ve got much bigger problems to deal with than these two, they should just figure it out on their own and leave you out of it.

>Aborea has been helpful and you’d like your men to be as prepared as possible, Mildri will just have to wait until after the mission is over for her to have her personal time.

>It’s Mildri’s body and she should be able to do what she wants, your troops will do fine without Aborea’s instruction.

>They should sort this out themselves and leave you out of it.

>>
>>3352408
>They should reschedule time they use body then. Give Mildri time to noon Aborea gets afternoons.

So do it yourself and do it like this

Maybe we should ask if her body feels stronger and more capable after all this training. Remind her that training is not only beneficial for soldiers but also for her.

“Baldr-” Mildri begins.

“I heard,” you cut in “and I have a solution to your problem. Mildri you will be in control in the mornings while you still have energy to do the things you like, but in the afternoons Aborea will take control, because my soldiers still need to get their training.”

Mildri makes a sour face “But even in the mornings my body is sore and it makes it hard to focus on my studies.”

“But don’t you feel stronger as well?”

“Some,” She begrudgingly admits.

“Aborea’s training does more than just make you sore, it also makes you stronger.”

“Fine, I’ll take the mornings and Aborea can spar in the afternoons.” Mildri accepts your compromise and for the rest of your prep time the two of them stick to their compromise.

During that time you also take the time to test out the other capabilities of your belt. Upon waiting a full day, your skin begins to harden into bark and like the goddess said, it itches like crazy. The act of moving around becomes very difficult as your skin resists all of your movement and you find that while indeed you are impervious to a lot of damage, you can’t fight as well.

>This is what my rolls were for

On the day before you set out for the ritual, the scouting party lieutenant Long had sent out returned with reports of the enemy’s numbers. The scouts report roughly 250 men at the ritual site with only a small trickle of swamp folk still on the move to the site. You ask about composition to which they reply that they couldn’t really get close enough to tell who was who. The scouts do tell you that the site’s original stand of trees was now a dense and mighty forest spreading out quite a distance from the original size. As for guard patrols the scouts report that they didn’t see many swamp folk on patrol, but with the trees they couldn’t really tell if anyone was patrolling, you question them specifically about the river and if there were any guards stationed to watch it, to which they reply they had seen no gaurds. With that additional information, you and the lieutenants confer once more on about your plans for the attack.

>Anything you wish to add to the plan? This will be your last chance.

>Current Plan: Attack via the river the night of the ritual letting your crossbowman hit the shamans with an initial volley before having Mildri freeze the river and launching an assault with your melee infantry.
>>
>>3355821
shiiiiit 250 people? we were expecting a little more than what we have, 250 is fucking a lot damn.

ask Mildri if she can undo the ice, we will have to fucking run, there's no way we can kill that many
>>
>>3355821
Is the antidote ready? How is Selenas?

As for strategy, set up our retreat paths as the river itself, back to the boats or if there are too many shamans alive to take the boats we retreat to the other side of the river and head north.
Remember we just have to disturb the ritual and destroying whatever there is in the site is an option in case the shammans retreat.

1. We set up.
One big unit of heavy infantry in column ready to storm objective.
Two unit of 10 crossbowmen set up by the bank of the river.
10 pairs of soldiers hidden around the objective.
(Preferable at the start all of soldiers are trying to hide)
2. Attack
Both units of crossbowman open fire
Mildri freeze the river
Heavy infantry launches an assault (if we can cover our advance with Smoke Grenado)
3.Let them burn!
Everyone
Throw explosives.
Throw equivalent of molotov cocktails
If crosbowman can let them shoot flammable ammo (either bolts with rags coated in lamp oil or just let the heads sit in fire until they are hot red)
4. Fighting retreat
We leave

Being outnumbered almost 4 to 1 you decide to add a little bit more to the plan, you suggest that you split your forces and have all of the heavies and crossbows on the river while most of the medium infantry surround the outside of the site and attempt to light the forest on fire burning out and killing a large portion of the swamp folk. There is some slight dissent at splitting your few forces in the face of so many swamp folk, but lieutenant Ward assure both you and the other two that her men can and will do their jobs. When questions of possible retreat options come up, you ask Mildri if she can break the ice she creates, to which she responds yes she can shatter the ice bridge freeing the boats to sail down river if a quick exit is needed. While the prospect of having to sail down a river in the presence of shamans with water magic wasn’t a pleasant one, the disruption of the ritual and the death of the majority of the shamans was the main objective of the attack. All you had done was turn the mission objectives from a matter of military orders to one of survival.

Finishing the meeting and training for the day, you head off to check on Gregory’s antidote as well as Selenas. When you arrive at the hospital and ask after Gregory you are not led to Gregory’s usual hang out in the upstairs lab, but rather to a ground floor room that you realize was the hospitals kitchen. Gregory was leaning over a rather large cauldron of antidote stirring the concoction with a large wooden spoon. “Is it ready?” you ask Gregory as you come up behind him and look at the thick dark green soup in the cauldron.

“Almost, don’t worry Baldr, when you and your men are ready to leave, I’ll bring the antidote over. Now this antidote not only fights the poison, it also has inoculating effects, so I’d like you and your men to have a dose before you go so that by the time the fighting starts you’ll all be resistant the poison. I’d also like you to have this.” Gregory grabs a small leather bag off the table next to him and hands it to you. “It’s your own healer’s kit, it’s got the basic tools of the healer’s trade that’ve been teaching you how to use over these past few days. You’ve got the will to be a healer Baldr, if you keep practicing, then someday you’ll turn into a damn fine one.”

“Thank you Gregory, and I will keep practicing, so that when my service to the Queen is complete, that I can spend my time healing rather than hurting.”

Your words bring a smile to Gregory’s face as he bids you farewell and promises once again to bring the antidote to you when you leave.

Next you head upstairs to see how Selenas is doing. Instead of finding her in bed you find her trying practicing her sword swings in her bedclothes. You observe her movements for a little bit and notice that she isn’t exactly in top form, her movements are slow and her swings are sloppy. She is sweating profusely and breathing heavily as she goes through her routine. Occasionally she breaks out into short chesty coughing fits, but recovers and keeps going. You clear your throat to catch her attention. At the sound she jumps and spins around to face you. “Baldr,” she says surprised to see you “I was just um…”

“Feeling better?”

“Yes much better I-” Selenas’s legs buckle underneath her and she falls only avoiding total collapse by grabbing the edge of her bed.

You rush over to her side “Are you sure about that,” You say feeling her forehead with the back of your hand. Her forehead was hot and slick with sweat, and you could also feel her body trembling trying to keep her up. “You’re still sick.”

“Just a little, I’ll be fine by the time you go to disrupt the ritual.”

“We leave tomorrow, and I don’t see you getting any better by then.” You admit to her.

“No, I’ll be fine,” she says trying to get back on her feet and failing. “I want to help you Baldr, please the attack will be dangerous and I don’t want to leave you to fight it on your own.”

Selenas really wanted to help, she was clinging to you for dear life and the look in her eyes was robbing you of your will, but she was in no shape to fight or even be out of bed for that matter, you don’t exactly want to risk her coming with and getting hurt, or have her condition worsen.

>Let Selenas come with, you just can’t say no.

>No, Selenas is sick and needs her rest, she has to stay here.

>No, Selenas is sick and needs her rest, she has to stay here.

"Selenas you can barely stand. Rest and recuperate, I know you want to go out there and fight. But as you are now you'll be more of a hindrance then, well than anything else. Just get yourself healed up. And when i'll come back I'll make it up to you." while we think, I wish they'd let me rest when I was that injured.

Trail a hand over her hair.
"I'd want nothing more than have you out there by my side, but you and I know enough about healing and helping the other soldiers to know you are still recovering.
You already helped a lot by getting that antidote with me, that will save the lives of many of the men.

They almost took her heart, and that's her most beautiful pop part, that heart of gold that made us believe that it's worth defending the empire if we can keep that safe.

“I know you want to help Selenas, but in your condition you’d do more harm than good and I don’t want to risk you getting sicker, injured, or dying on me.”

“But I-”

“You’ve already helped me get the antidote for the poison, there’s nothing more you need to do except get some rest.” Selenas gives you a worried look but before she can speak, you help her up and settle her back into bed. “Please Selenas, stay here and rest. The last thing I need is to have worry over whether you’re safe and resting here and not following me into danger.”

“Alright,” she sighs “I’ll stay here, but promise me you’ll come back safe.”

“I wouldn’t promise anything less, now you get some rest so that when I return we can celebrate my victory.”

Selenas gives you a gentle smile “Okay,” and with that you leave her to her rest.

The following day, the day of the ritual, you and your men assemble in front of the healer’s hospital early in the morning, while Gregory brings out the large cauldron of antidote. Gregory instructs the men to all take and swallow a whole cup of the thick liquid. While the liquid itself smelled faintly of mint, its taste was something else entirely. Even your iron clad stomach was having trouble with the stuff. When one solider empties the contents of his stomach on the ground Gregory gives the man another cup of the stuff and lets out another warning that he wouldn’t let anyone leave until every man drank his full cup and held it down. Several more omiting soldiers later and everyone had managed to hold the liquid down. Looking at the sickened state of your soliders, you begin to wonder whether the cure is better than poison.

Gregory fills a smaller cauldron with the remainder of the liquid and gives it to you. “Here you are Captain, if any man gets stabbed by one of those swamp folk you give him this after the battle and he’ll have no trouble from the poison.”

“Thank you Gregory, not only for this antidote, but for the training as well as your care for Selenas.”

“Ah, think nothing of it, it’s a healers job help after all. Now go and get rid of those damned swamp folk so that this rebellion can be brought to a swift end.” He bids you farewell and you and your men set off for the ritual site. This time your trip is uneventful, in fact you don’t see a single soul on the roads or in the fields from the walls all the way to your infiltration point up river from the ritual site. Arriving early, you give your men a little breather while you wait for nightfall.

The air among these men was entirely different from that of the garrison troops you’d fought the mercenaries with. The air wasn’t full anticipation, excitement, or fear, but rather one of cold determination. The lieutenants and you had been over the plans a thousand times and the lieutenants had beat every last detail of the plan into the troops, they had trained hard for this day and knew what they had to do, all that was required now was to actually do it.

During the time waiting, you find yourself…

You find yourself spending most of your time with Lt. Ward and her men finalizing her part of the plan. As you go over the details, you notice that the majority of Ward’s troops are women. That’s not to say you hadn’t seen women in other units, but this is the first time you’d seen a unit almost entirely comprised of them. After you finish combing out the last few wrinkles of the plan you ask her about it.

“I must say Lieutenant I’ve never seen so many women in one unit before. Is the Colonel segregating units now, or is this just coincidence?”

Ward cracks a smile at your question, “You know Captain, I’ve been wondering that myself. This unit started out as a mix, but after a few campaigns with the Colonel, I started to notice that most of my replacement troops were women and soon my unit reached the balance it’s at now. We’re not any less effective mind you, these women fight just as hard as man.”

“I wasn’t trying to imply that you were less effective Lieutenant. I grew up with a few sisters and I know exactly how hard a girl can hit when she’s mad,” you say as faint memories of your younger sisters ganging up on you when you were a little too mean to them flash through your mind.

“I can almost see you plodding around with a sister hanging from each limb,” Ward laughs but her expression doesn’t stay happy for long. As her cheerful expression fades, you notice a far off look in Ward’s eyes, the kind of look you’ve seen as well as experienced before.

You place your hand on Ward’s shoulder and her attention snaps back to you, “Bad memories?” you ask.

“Yeah,” Ward responds shaking her head trying to clear her thoughts “Sorry Captain, I should get some rest.” Ward says shaking your hand off her shoulder as she walks off.

Leaving it at that, you spent a little time talking with Ward’s troops. You learn the most of the women in Ward’s unit came from families that didn’t have any sons to give when the conscription came through, others signed up after losing their families, and a few more joined for the opportunity imperial service brings. Whatever the reason, you find that all of Ward’s troops are reliable and you’d trust your back to any of them in a fight.

You are about to head off to bed when you catch sight of Mildri reading quietly under a nearby tree. You figure it’d be a good idea check to make sure your mage was ready to perform her part of the plan and that no internal conflict would hinder her. “How are you doing Mildri?” you come right up and ask.

Startled out of her reading, it takes Mildri a second to figure out who had spoken and how she should respond. “Oh, it’s you Baldr, I’m fine.”

“Are you and Aborea ready?”

“Yes, we talked about the best way to handle this attack.”

“And what did you decide?”

“I’ll be handling the whole operation. Aborea’s not so good at precise freezing, so I’ll be making the ice bridge. I’ll stay in control the whole time unless something goes wrong and I end up in danger, that’s when Aborea will take control.”

“That sounds alright, as long as Aborea will follow my orders when she’s in control.”

Mildri pauses for a long moment to, what you presume, is to listen to Aborea, “She says yes.” Mildri says focusing back on you.

“Good, now get some rest, you’ll need it for the attack.” You say as you depart for a nice shady spot to lie down in.

You swear you’d only been lying down for a few minutes when Lieutenant Nolan rouses you. “It’s time Captain,” he says helping you to your feet. The two of you head to the boats where the rest of the men are waiting to set off. You get into a boat with some of the heavies and Mildri and shove off from the shore and begin to slowly float toward the ritual site.

The Scouts hadn’t been lying when they said a dense forest surrounded the site. Long before you reach the site, you find yourself surrounded on all sides by tightly packed trees. Lying low in the boats with the soldiers, you hold your breath as you pass through the area. With help from your helmet, you catch occasional glimpses of dark shadows fliting between the trees on either shore. The hair on your neck rises and you begin to wonder whether a water infiltration was the best choice. A feeling that only gets stronger as you approach the ritual site and the number of flitting shadows you see increases in number. Are they just your imagination, or are the shadows actually real? Have the swamp folk spotted you already, and are only tailing you to a prepared ambush site? You start to panic slightly as thoughts such as these run through your head as your boats float down the river. Soon you are treated to a flickering light dancing between the trees, whether it was the ritual site, or an ambush, you were about to find out.
