<You are Paula Torrez, officer for the Washington DC Police Department. Or so you were, until a reckless act of courage saw the end of your life. You now find yourself trapped, along with several others, in an unforgiving death game orchestrated by a black sphere known only as Gantz. Its rules are simple: hunt and kill monsters, aliens, for points and survival. With the promise of a way out, and Gantz's technologically advanced arsenal at your fingertips, can you live through the agony of this life after death? Or will your mind and body break like the hundreds of others that tried before you?>

'What are the chances they'd pick that park of all places?'

The thought floated in your head at the twins' designated area of Soatpstone Valley Park. A park you had visited with Chris prior for some training of his own, in which he had some heavy history to remember therein. You'd originally known it as a regular trail where hikers and joggers would pass on in the North end, yet had been the sight of a family's disappearance.

You stared at phone a little longer than you should have, before Yukino replied, "Are you guys going training? What for exactly?"

There was a quick tilt of your head as you looked to Yukino almost craning over to see the contents of the message. She still had half of her pizza slice on hand, but didn't see at all interested in it while looking at the message and then you.

"Yeah, I promised them" you reply, quickly pocketing the phone, "since they wanted to improve their hand-to-hand combat. Tanjeet's coming as well, since he also knows martial arts as well."

"Oh cool" Yukino states, smiling all the while, "You think you can teach me too? I've only ever known Karate from watching cartoons, so I'm totally lost on martial arts."

"I suppose I could", you start, "but don't you want to get better with the sword? That's much more useful than Martial Arts considering what we end up fighting."

Yukino stares at you in thought for a second before answering, "I guess, but I still want to join in if you'll let me. I've got homework to finish up tonight either way, so I can get that done before you go."

You had to admire Yukino's diligence for maintaining a good work ethic, even if it was after so many times her life had been put in danger. You couldn't really tell if it was just sheer drive or a lot of pent of emotional baggage after Erick's death, but it was something that you knew the team could rely on. There was not real point in denying her entry either way, since she'd need the training where she was going.

"Alright you can come with", you reply, and Yukino let's out a 'Yeah!', "just pay attention to the lesson at hand. I'll bring Erick's sword as well since we can get some sparring done there as well."

"Why do you keep calling it that Paula?' Yukino asks, looking somewhat concerned, "I know Erick did use it first but...isn't it yours if he's not around anymore? I-I mean...it's fine if-"

A small tinge of pain enters your chest, causing you to interrupt her, "I'm only using it until he comes back. You could say I'm borrowing it, but really I want to have some of his close to motivate me further."

"Paula..."

You can see a hint of sadness on Yukino, before she nods her head in understanding. You return her smile and let her know you're fine. You and Yukino return to the sofa, and finish off one more slice of pizza.

<May 2nd, Wednesday 4:45 PM>

After saving the rest of the pizza in the fridge, you're back at the living room with Yukino.

In spite of your current lounging in the living room sofa, Yukino's already taken to starting up her homework. Taking out two binders from her backpack, she diligently places them on the kitchen table along with a pencil and a large pink eraser. She gets to work silently on the homework, almost robotic, as she doesn't even look around from her seat.

The sigh, and get up from the sofa and saying, "Yukino, you want some help?"

"Umm, sure", she states, almost sounding surprised, "I'm not too good with English or Social Studies. There's too many rules to remember in it, and it all seems to contradict itself.

You move to her side and seat next to her to look at the work at hand. It doesn't seem too long, but some of the english grammatical rulings look complicated. At least the social studies portion looks simple, just a packet to finish up on about the American Civil War.

'Thankfully it's not algebra', you think, looking over Yukino's binder, 'or math in general actually. Hopefully we can knock this out before the girls get here.'

<GREAT SUCCESS>

<May 2nd, Wednesday 5:45 PM>

In spite of how complicated it seemed, the English homework was fairly simple once you helped Yukino understand the use of semicolons. Grammatical rules weren't exactly your strong-suit, but you knew well enough that a lot of punctuation rules came down to phonetic pauses and timing. Honestly, it was much easier than grammatical differences in Spanish since you at least only had to worry about single gendered words in English.

Social studies was much more tedious, but overall the majority of the material Yukino had to cover was included in the packet itself. You weren't exactly a history buff, but the Civil War itself was fairly straightforward from your point of view. Or at least, the parts they were detailing in the assignment compared to what historians had to research. Binding up the pages and giving the material one final review, Yukino closed the binder and sighed in relief.

"Thanks Paula", she said, putting her binder away, "didn't know you were so smart as well. I-I mean, not like I didn't think you were smart, just...you know."

"It's alright Yukino", you chuckled, putting Yukino's binder back in her backpack, "I know what you meant there. Anyways, now that we got done with your homework, wanna help me out with something as well?"

Yukino nodded her head in excitement.

"Awesome," you said, moving for the door, "get your suit on and your sword. I need to head home and pick up my gear, and hopefully get picked up by the twins."

"Got it", Yukino responded, moving to her room. You could see her almost slide to bottom of her bed on the floor, and pulling out a large case that looked like a violin case. You probably knew what was in there already, before Yukino closed her bedroom door.

'She'll be in Harvard for sure. Hopefully...'

<May 2nd, Wednesday 5:25 PM>

"Yes, meet me at my place", you repeated into the phone, "Yukino is coming with us as well, since I'm taking care of her for the evening. Just drop us off at her place after we finish, ok?"

You were on your way home in a cab with Yukino sitting next to you. You'd just finished a conversation with the twins about training and about Tanjeet's condition, who had started to at least talk more now. They had almost suggested to call Dante as well, but they immediately recoiled at the idea since they were more than certain Chris was going to be tagging along as well. Not that you minded, since you were more than aware of their ire given how Chris's behavior had been these last few days.

"Alright, we'll be there at 6:00 PM, ok?" Claire replied, and you acknowledged it, "See you both there! And we'll bring some lights so it doesn't get too dark."

They cut off the call right after that statement, but you were sure they'd arrive on time regardless.

"So, what happened with Tanjeet?", Yukino asked, looking somewhat concerned, "they said he was getting better, so that means something happened right?"

A part of you really wanted to tell Yukino everything that had occurred, yet you knew full well that Tanjeet's own trust was on line as well. Not that it mattered too much, since the twins knew about it themselves, but they were at least his close friends. Yukino only needed to know the main portion, to at least help Tanjeet in his current dilemma for the time being.

"Tanjeet is very hurt after what happened to Maria", you answer, earning Yukino's full attention, "he wasn't speaking or meeting anyone ever since he got back home. We've been trying to help him out ever since, and we're hoping the training can take part of his mind away from it."

Yukino nodded in acknowledgement, facing away from you. There was a ponderous look on her face, like she was trying to understand or at least know what was going on with Tanjeet from the tidbit of information you gave her. It wasn't long before she spoke up again.

"I was also hurt after what happened to Erick" Yukino stated, staring out of the car window, "but I also wanted to fight for him so much more for after that day. After you talked me out of...you know, I really wanted to make a difference."

"It's partly the reason why I'm coming with you, so it never happens to anyone like Erick again. But...why can't Tanjeet take strength from it?"

You take a small sigh, and respond with, "Tanjeet's reaction to this was gradual, he never had time for an ultimatum like you did Yukino. He didn't come to a realization from blunt force trauma, but got hit by it over time."

"Meaning...?"

"He hasn't had time to come to terms with it yet", you finalize, and see Yukino look down sadly, "but it's ok. Part of the reason we're going to the training ground is to cheer him up as well, so don't let that sadden you, alright?"

Yukino's saddened expression softens slightly, before giving you a slight smile in a nod.

<May 2nd, Wednesday 6:20 PM>

The rest of the ride was uneventful, as you and Yukino decided to save further conversation about Tanjeet for the training ground itself. After paying the cab fare, you quickly made your way up the steps to your apartment building. Yukino quickly headed for the restroom, as she had held it in since your small dinner.

Not wasting any time however, you headed for your room and the closet where Gantz's weapons were held. Yet upon entering your room you noticed something off. Had anyone else that came in, they might not have seen it but a quick scan of the room gave you all the clues you needed. The bed was made, the closet was closed, and window was open.

There was no room for chance here, as you unleavened your right wrist and opened up the Gantz radar. Turning it on, you noticed that there were 2 objects in the room, one of them Yukino and another one you. There were only two people but something was still wrong here.

'There's no way this was a normal break in', you said, looking around, 'nothing taken or upturned. And why would they leave the window...?'

You carefully make your way to the closet, taking ganders at your radar throughout. A slight breeze brushes past your hair move past your bed. The window's open air catches your cheek as you turn to move on the other side. Every step you take seems to take an eternity to get you to the closet, but you're on high alert to any sign of movement in a moment's notice.

The only sounds in your house are the slight gusts of wind from the window, the bathroom's ventilation where Yukino is and your footsteps approaching the closet's door. Even if that intruder was still in the apartment, you were sure that you'd have heard it by now. If they left already through the window, then it could have been just carelessness on their part to have closed the window down regardless.

These thoughts and conclusions swirl in your head as you finally make it to the closet doors and, with one swift motion, you open them. Shirts, coats, and Erick's clothes lined the coat hangers therein, along with some smaller effects on the bottom including the weapon's duffelbag. It looked as you left it this morning, but you kneeled down to the duffelbag to make sure everything was in there. Opening up the zipper, you peered inside and saw that indeed everything was still there.

Erick's big gun, one rifle, your gauntlets, two pistols, one of the net pistols, and Erick's sword sheathe were still inside. Breathing a big sigh of relief, you closed it up and stood up once again.

'What the hell was the intruder after then...?' you asked yourself, still looking at duffelbag, 'Didn't take anything or even-'

Several rapid and loud taps emerge behind you. You quickly turn around to see nothing, yet the taps are not getting further away. There's a rattling on the window as you notice it open a little further ajar, and for a second see a slight curve on your window frame that almost resembles a coiled, curly tail. You immediately head to the window to peer out, and see nothing. There's a heavy draw on your breath, as you immediately close it and stand back in your room.

"It was on the ceiling..." you exclaim in disbelief and glancing at your radar, "It must have known the radar overlaps the dots over each other and matched my footsteps...waiting for me to take eyes off of the radar."

"But how did it even-"

"Paula are you ok?"

Yukino's voice calls out behind you, and you violently turn back. She flinches slightly at your forceful response, but you take a few deep breaths and steady yourself before responding.

"Someone, or something broke in", you reply, and Yukino tenses a little, "but it's gone now. I don't know what it was doing in here, but I think I've seen this one before."

"You know what broke in?" she asks, earning a nod from you, "Is it an alien...? How do you know it?"

"Well-"

A loud buzz from your pocket interrupts your explanation.

"And you're sure it's the same one...?" Tanjeet asks, and you nod in acknowledgement, "I doubt it'd be heading into your place just for some recon. I don't know what it could be after though..."

Claire had picked you up from your apartment not a few minutes after the break-in. You didn't waste much time in recalling the story to the others in the SUV. Besides a few surprised comments from Silvia and Claire, it was actually Tanjeet that had the talking points here. Since this was now the second time that alien had broke into your home, it appeared he was at least interested in the pattern of occurrence.

"Well, if it knows about the capabilities of the radar as you say", Tanjeet continues, looking over to the side window, "then these things have to be tied to Gantz now. It was bad enough that they were aliens interested in us, but this confirms at least their knowledge of the game."

"What I still don't understand is why it's that one again?" Silvia asks, looking over to you, "does he have a grudge against you or something Paula?"

"It's like one of those secret agents", Yukino speaks up, surprising Silvia, "if it can move without being seen, it'd be perfect for spying or breaking into places without alerting anyone. I guess it was just bad timing on our part we managed to spot it again."

"What about the ones in warehouse?" Claire asked, coming up to the park itself, "Dante said he could seem pretty well. Why didn't they send that one there as well...?"

"I'm not sure, but infiltration must not have been its priority", Tanjeet replies, "even Dante didn't know what they were doing there. What really amazes me is how they keep finding us...even during the last hunt..."

There was a small lull in silence as you and the others took to wonder on how this happened, but the parking break on the SUV snapped everyone Claire out of it.

"We can wonder about it later guys", Claire announced, taking her seat-belt off, "right now, we need to get to spot and start up on that training. To the sparring ground!"

You gave her a "right", before you and the others took off their seatbelts and made for the car's large trunk.

<May 2nd, Wednesday 7:00 PM>

The 'sparring ground' the girls took you and Tanjeet to was a flat stretch of trees near a brook on the east side of the park. You had passed the area where Chris took you for his own sparring lessons, but you didn't mention a word of it to the others.

"We used to come here for hikes back with our dad", Claire stated, setting her own duffelbag down, "but we kind of stopped coming after that family disappeared."

"Yeah, no one ever comes here anymore", Silvia adds, taking out some water bottles from her bag, "it's the perfect place for another training spot."

"Now that we're here though", Tanjeet interjected, taking a seat nearby a log, "what did you have in mind Paula?"

"Alright all of you line up in front on of me right now" you command, dropping your own bag to the ground, "Except Tanjeet, you're coming over here next to me."

They do so, spreading out in a single line in front of you and Tanjeet takes your side. Taking a nearby stick, you draw a long line in front of them on the ground and then one in front of you and Tanjeet. You were going off of muscle memory with how a typical dojo system worked, but you'd been to enough classes to remember the first few steps. More than anything though, you were just hoping they would be able to keep up.

"The following martial art is known as Aikido" you explain, standing in an attentive stance, "it's a grappling and movement based martial art used to deal with opponents much larger than yourself. Considering some of the things we fight, I'll need you to pay attention."

The others just nod in acknowledgement, except Tanjeet, who's trying to imitate your own stance.

"I'll show you some basic grapples," you continue, "and we can go until you guys either get it, or one of you passes out."

Silvia looks somewhat worried as you said that, but quickly stifles it. They knew what they signed up for here, and they were going to get the workout of their lives.

<CRITICAL FAILURE> -1 AGR
<May 2nd, Wednesday 10:50 PM>

You imagined training would be slow and tedious given how difficult specific grappling and footwork went into Aikido. In fact, you yourself mastered the techniques only after several months of practice. You had police training prior, but the art wasn't too difficult to understand from a base level. Yet the current situation was all but a display of how terrible either your teaching skills were or how unfocused the others were at the moment.

Over the last 4 hours you had tried to drill into everyone the basics of Aikido grappling. This had resulted in 4 hours of torturous physical strain that left everyone either confused, hurt, frustrated or all three at once in Silvia's case. The initial grapple you were trying to teach was a quick disarming grapple that was supposed to bring an opponent to the ground quickly while disabling their arm with a quick twist of their elbows.

This first teaching resulted in the activation of Claire's Gantz suit following your demonstration, which almost flung Silvia into a tree and almost dislocated her arm. Granted this was after several long explanations and demonstrations by you and Tanjeet, but you were guessing the amount of frustration in her head may have tripped off the activation. This was followed by Yukino almost doing the same to Claire and promptly slamming her overhead into a log. Tanjeet had essentially called it off by this point, but at least Yukino still seemed eager.

"I think I can get it we do another one" she huffed, looking over at Tanjeet, "I think I got the footwork down, I just need to-"

"NO! We're calling it a night" Claire howled, causing her to flinch, "Silvia and myself are hurt, cold, and we certainly don't want to spend the rest of the night in a dark forest like this."

"Sorry Paula...", Silvia weakly says, sitting near a tree, "I don't think we're cut out for this...but we'll still practice with our guns. If we get good enough at hitting from long range, we won't have to worry about them getting up close."

Currently surmising the situation, and everyone's tired faces, you gave out a sigh and said, "Alright, pack it up people, we're heading home. We'll try to have another training day before the next mission though, so please try to make it then."

The twins nod weakly, and Tanjeet gives you a look of understanding. Yukino looks somewhat disappointed at the situation, but she also nods in understanding. You don't try to push on the angle of training Yukino either, as even you know training with swords in the dark is a terrible idea as it is. Picking up your bags and weapons, you follow the twins back to the car with a less confident look on your face.

<May 2nd, Wednesday 11:25>

The twins drop you off back home with words of encouragement, but they fall on deaf ears. You just smile back, and see them take Yukino back to her home.

'What a shit-show...'

You were tired, it was the dead of night and still there was a nagging thought in your head.

'What the hell was that alien after...?'

You surmised that he couldn't have come in to take anything since you couldn't find anything missing in the apartment. Then again you never conducted a full search outside of your room. If he had gone elsewhere in your house, then it was probably a good idea to conduct a thorough search as soon as possible.

That was when another thought lingered in your head, though more brought by why that alien had chosen to stay here in spite of your arrival.

'Could have have been leaving...or was he waiting for something...?'

Another possibility sprung into your head as the realization of the alien's intent was weighed against its actions. If it was going to be this unsubtle about the mistake of leaving the window open, maybe he wasn't trying to take something out in the first place. You had no idea if the alien remembered its first encounter with you and Erick, but it could have been a way of making you assume something that wasn't its intention.

'If you put something in here, then I'm going to find it you bastard.'

<GREAT SUCCESS>
<May 2nd, Wednesday 11:50 PM>

You had started the search in your room, and found some strange markings on the ceiling where that alien had escaped from. It was a slight, almost white residue that looked like strips of skin in the same of claws or feet on there. Had you tried to present this as evidence to a break-in however, you would have been laughed at by the precinct by suggestions something just crawled its way on your ceiling.

Otherwise, you found nothing in your room. There were a pair of flashlights under the kitchen sink, and these had come in handy for searching some of the smaller spaces in there, but you still found nothing. Only air was in the conspicuous places, and only dust was in the inconspicuous places. You'd done a few search warrants in your time, and knew where to usually look for a bug or hidden stash but this seemed too well hidden.

Your next search location was the restroom. It almost always was a good place to put a device to invade people's privacy, yet often wondered if those that put it were just trying to peep on people. It was a strange thought to think on, but you couldn't really understand the full mental process of perverts or aliens. Regardless, you bent down to start searching for bumps near the tiles or wall siding.

That's when you saw it, through reflective glance back to get your flashlight. You saw it in the mirror.

It was a very small, very round and almost transparent bud that created a small protrusion in one of the buttons on the spinal guard of the suit. Perhaps it was the slowly creeping exhaustion of the day, but in that dim light of the bathroom you clearly distinguished it from the other buttons forms. You stood up and tried to search for it with your fingers and felt that slight bump not there in the other buttons.

It was that moment, that suddenly almost everything clicked.

'He wasn't planting a bug on the house', you ascertained, looking back at the mirror, 'he was luring me in, and then just followed me until I stopped to plant it. But what is it...?'

Your mind immediately wandered to the possibility of it being a surveillance bug or a GPS tracker for yourself. If it was the former, then discussing plans or other such notions would be much more difficult with the suit on. If it was the latter, then there was nothing stopping those aliens from simply monitoring your every move. Whatever it was, it didn't make you feel any less satisfied for finding it.

There's no telling what'll happen if you try to take that thing out of your suit. Or if you even can considering where it is right now. What's more, even if you did, you don't know if it's the only one that alien planted. To counteract this, you go with a simple solution: taking it off.

'I doubt he got on Yukino', you think, loosening the straps on your suit, 'seeing she was in the bathroom the whole time, but let's be sure. I needed to get this thing washed anyways.'

Stand nude in front of the mirror for a second, seeing the formless straps of the suit laying on the bathroom sink uselessly. You then turn your attention to the back part of the suit, looking straight at the armored spine plating and where you saw the small bud. It is indeed still in there, but you can only touch it slightly with how small the opening to the button's inside is.

'Couldn't have even reached in there if I wanted to', you ascertain, and then pick up the suit scraps, 'and I sure as hell am not going to try prying it out. God...I'm surprised no one complained about how much this thing stinks...'

Even as far away as you are, the sweat and otherwise foul odor of the days you've worn it have kept on it. You stuff the remains into one of the laundry bins in the front and send a text to Yukino before entering the bathroom again. After taking a quick shower, you take a glance through your phone and see that Yukino hasn't replied back.

Surmising she's probably sleeping, you turn off your phone and head to bed.

<May 3rd, Thursday 9:00 AM>

You wake up with a slight headache in your temples. Normally, you'd gauge this to a normal occurrence of fatigue in sleep but this one lingers for much longer than you'd like. What's more, there's a slight fuzzy feeling in your eyes, not in lack of vision but like they've vibrating slightly. You try to brush it off before heading to the kitchen.

Quickly picking up your phone on the way, you spot a message from Yukino.

<I checked on the suit's back for that bud you mentioned. Saw nothing there, but I'll look closer when I get home from school.>

You text her back, an 'Ok, please let me know if you find anything', and quickly click off the phone. You take a small sigh, before heading to the fridge and making yourself some breakfast with the leftovers that are left from yesterday.

<May 3rd, Thursday 9:20 AM>

After finishing up your bacon and egg sandwich, cleaning the dishes, and making sure the stoves are turned off, you hear a trembling on your phone in the kitchen table. You pick up and see that it's Senator Bowery once again with another text.

<Time window is closing Paula. I'd suggest you get me an answer today. Don't disappoint me.>

You click off the phone in a grumble at that.

'And it was just starting to be a nice clear day' you say sarcastically, 'That man really won't quit...will he?'

Considering the amount of time you had available, you could give a bit of time to washing up the suit. Though...you honestly had no idea if it would be safe to put in the washing machine along with the rest of the laundry. What's more, you had no idea if it could even be washed since you couldn't tell what kind of fabric it was. This didn't stop you from getting it into the washer, considering you had another problem in your mind.

'If Bowery is going to be this persistent' you thought, stuffing the black scraps into the machine, 'then I've got some choice words from my father for him. I did what he asked for in the end.'

Loading up a bit of detergent into the washer, and turning on the normal cycle, you reached for your phone and dialed in the senator's number. Given what he asked of you before, in consulting with your father for an answer, you had done as he had requested. Ultimately, it was up to him to decide whether or not the answer as satisfactory. After a few dead tones, Bowery's voice finally came over the speaker.

"Paula, glad to hear a quick response", he spoke, almost sounding pleased with you, "I trust you have an answer for me? Hopefully, it's favorable for both of us."

"Good morning Senator Bowery", you reply, trying to sound proper in your response, "I did as you requested, and spoke to my father about your proposition."

There was a light chuckle from the other side of the line before Bowery said, "Excellent, I knew you'd pull through. So, when is he willing to move forward with the campaign?"

"He's not going to. My father has chosen to remain neutral here, and support neither you nor the people in your opposition."

There was a small pause breath for a moment, before Bowery spoke again, "I see. And why exactly did he say so?"

"He mentioned that he's not interested in getting involved with politics. Nothing personal against you, but more because he believes it's not an ideal place for a businessman."

Another pause, yet this one lingered much longer than before.

"Interesting", Bowery spoke up, breaking his silence with brevity, "I am quite surprised considering your father's prior history with government officials. Very well then, but there's another issue I need to finish up with you."

"That being...?"

"Well since our negotiations with your father weren't well recieved, I think I can propose something to better suit both of us in this deal. Tell your father he'll receive an exclusive government contract for his company if he agrees to support my deal."

"Sir, his mind's been made up already. I can't go forward and-"

"And", Bowery interrupts, quite loudly actually, "I'll put a halt to any further investigations the federal government has issued on your department. I'm sure you don't want complications for your job down the line."

'The FBI?' you thought, as his words reached your brain, 'What...?'

"Fine, I'll pass on your proposition", you answer back, pretending to sound enthusiastic, "but like I said, he seemed to have his mind made up."

"Then try to be as convincing as possible" Bowery adds, "you'll only get your share at the most favorable outcome of this negotiation. Good luck Paula, you have until Friday morning to have this resolved; have him give me a call as soon as he agrees."

He cut off the phone call after that final stipulation. There was a degree of annoyance you had with this man, yet his continued insistence and strong-arming of you were beginning to drive you up a wall. It would have all sounded desperate from any other person, yet he was so damn confident he would succeed in it. It eerily reminded so much of Chris's own headstrong and heavy handed mindset.

"Better enjoy this one" you say, praying Bowery hears your scorn, "it's the last one I do for you. I'm through being a damn errand woman anyways."

You'd been called a government slave before, not personally, but over parts of the news. It was a stupid title call someone in your mind, since you knew you were doing a service through your own volition. But if they could see the current state of entrapment that Bowery had you in, the title would have all the more appropriate. Clicking off the phone, you realized just how much that tirade with Bowery had taken you as a click suddenly came from the washing machine.

'Moment of truth', you thought as you opened the machine.

To your surprise, the suit's straps were completely untattered and smelled fresh from the wash cycle. You went to check the buttons on the spine, and looked to find that they, and the alien's bud, was were still intact. What's more, the suit looked like it wasn't retaining any water or was overly soaked from the cycle itself. Whatever kind of material this thing was made up of, it was very simple to maintain.

'Guess I'll only do a 10 minute cycle for the drier', you thought, reaching for the other machine's latch handle, 'but...this was much simpler than I thought it'd be.'

There was another vibration on your phone, interrupting your train of thought. You set the drier to the appropriate cycle, and go to pick up your phone. It's a message from Kurtis.

<Hey Paula, Allie told me to let you know that we're heading into a tunnel near the lake warehouse. Said you and her tracked the alien that attacked Dante during the last meeting there.>

'The tunnel near the old watermills', you thought, reading through the text, 'what is Allie thinking here...?'

ok guys, this thing is definitely a tracker, now that I think about that same alien broke in Erick's house and probably planted a bug on him, that's how they found us in the museum during our last mission, and now that Erick died and with him his suit was destroyed they needed a new one.

let's meet Kurtis and Allie and tell them about the bud, but we should not go with them to the tunnel since they can probably track us there.

also, send a message to Dante to set up the training while we go meet Kurtis

There was a part of you that wished to help them in their current escapade, but you stopped yourself from sending out a text with detailed aid. Not because you couldn't handle it, but more because of the current issue with your suit. You were already taking a chance by washing it and praying whatever thing was planted in it didn't just activate upon damage. And while you had half a mind to just stop putting it on, you weren't gonna take another chance with those things already on your team's trail.

You opened up a reply screen on your message tab, and started typing.

<Please wait for me at your place before you go. There's something I need to show you in person.>

After sending the message, you tried to think on preparations for the next mission. Besides just training up for the eventuality, you also wanted to make up for your past failure in the night prior. Not so much to save your wounded pride, but more to actually help out the others when you had previously failed to do so. You went over your list of contacts and landed on Dante's name.

"Hey Paula", Dante's voice came up over the speaker, "what you need? I got class in a little bit, so you might want to make it quick."

"Morning Dante," you greeted back, looking expectantly at the timer on your drier, "and yeah this'll be quick. I need you to call everyone up for a training session today, I'll let you decide on where since I'm a little spared for time right now."

"Sure, I'll call them up-", Dante replies and you hear shouting in the background.

Out of concern, you ask, "Hey, everything ok over there?"

"It's nothing, Bowery's just been throwing a fit this morning is all; something about a bad call he got. Anyways, I'll text you back as soon as they reply, and you can change the destination for today's session."

"Thanks Dante-"

You manage to say, before Dante cuts off the call unexpectedly. There's a hint of worry as this happens, as he's not someone to just cut and run, but you also confide that maybe he had just dropped his phone.

'Hopefully he just dropped his phone.'

<May 3rd, Thursday 11:00 AM>

You had arrived to Kurtis's house after some hassle back in Chinatown. It seemed that Metro lines were still shut down, not just in Metro Station, but throughout the main lines. Consider Metro Station was the hub for the lines, it made sense, but to keep them shut down until Sunday sounded excessive for a simple rescue operation.

You didn't pay it too much mind heading out of the taxi cab, and quickly making your way to Kurtis's house. The suit's quality was back to normal after the washer and drier did their jobs. Yet, you only made it to the upper stairs before a text from Dante read out a message back to you. You let out a sigh of relief to know he was at least speaking again.

<Everyone agreed to the meeting time of 7:00 PM. I suggested Roosevelt Island Memorial, since the warehouse was compromised last time. Is this fine with you Paula?>

<Yeah, that'll work Dante. Thank you, and are you alright from that earlier hang up?>

You send off your text to Dante, and click off your phone before finishing ascending up the stairs. You can't hear anything from Kurtis's house at the moment, but you can tell they're still in there from the rapping of feet behind the door. Knowing what happened the last time you knocked, you quickly send Kurtis a text that you arrived. A text replies back something cryptic not a few seconds later.

<Did someone close to you die recently? Please answer in last and first name, in that order.>

'Not this shit again...' you thought, quickly typing up the answer, 'I commend Kurtis for being careful, but this is getting a little annoying if we have to do this everytime we want to talk in person.'

<Erick Vanders. And please don't make me do this again if you know I'm coming.>

You send the message back somewhat annoyed but at least thankful that his reply is fairly quick.

<Can't ever be too careful.>

The sound of several locks and latches sound off from the door as the message enters your phone. Kurtis's hand motions you to come in from the open portion of the door. You quickly make your way inside, and Kurtis just as quickly shuts the door and applies the four other locks you heard behind there. There's a part of you that wants to reprimand him for being this cautious, yet you knew full well he'd go into his own reason as to why he need to keep this way.

"Sorry about that Paula" he starts, putting the last lock on the door, "been a little scared ever since Dante himself almost knocked my door down on Tuesday. Speaking of which, I got his call and I'll make it a little later than the others since I've got to complete a shift earlier today."

"Hey no worries" you reply, and look around the home, "but...where's Allie? Don't tell me she's still sleeping."

"No, she's been on the computer ever since Dante gave us that USB" he replies, motioning you to his room, "she really took to that program the New York team gave us. Even said she wanted to meet the developer and ask if they could work on improvements to it."

You figured Allie would be into this thing, considering how much she's into computers and acquiring information. Following Kurtis to the other room, you find Allie indeed sitting at the computer, looking through the open database for Gantz LIVE. She doesn't even notice you until you're literally tapping her shoulder, at which she almost jumps back.

"Holy shit-...Paula, hey, how you doing?", she blurts out.

"Fine enough," you reply, somewhat coyly, "but you seem to be in your zone here. Kurtis tells me you've been loving the program."

"It's a wonderful repository of information" she answers, nodding her head, "granted, a lot of it is statistics and not much background on the people in the game. But, been able to correlate a ton of past information with some of the more static information here."

"That's great Allie, but" you respond, trying to sound genuinely interested, "I still need to show you something. We can talk about the information later if you want, but this is a priority."

"Oh, sure sorry about that" Allie states, shifting her way out of Kurtis's chair, "had to do something before you came and all, but got swept in the moment. A-anyways, what did you want to show us?"

"Yeah, best if I sit down for this actually", you answer, and Kurtis motions you to the nearby bed.

Sitting down on the corner, you motion them to approach you. Taking off the hoodie, you point to the location of the bud you spotted earlier. They move in closer to look, and Allie almost recoils back. She almost hits Kurtis on her way back with her head, but quickly snaps herself out of it and speaks up.

"Sorry about that, but that's incredibly small" she says, and returns back to look at the bud, "It looks like it's made of some sort of plastic, and I can see faint outlines of circuitry through part of the dome. But...I can't tell you what it could be."

"It's fine, I honestly don't think anyone on earth might know" you reply, and they give you a concerned look, "it was one of those things again from the museum. It broke into my house and put it on me when I was looking for it."

"Yeah, you mentioned an invisible alien broke into Erick's apartment a while back as well", Allie states, earning a nod from you "if it was looking to plant something, it probably wouldn't be that difficult given the abilities you described. Sticking onto walls and turning invisible must make it an asset to those lizards."

"These things must operate as a unit if its with those others ones at the museum", Kurtis adds, "I was talking about this with Allie as well, on how they must have designated roles, like a special forces squad back in the army. This thing must be its infiltrator or forward scout."

"Whatever it is," you respond, putting back your hoodie, "until I know that this thing isn't a tracker or surveillance device, I can't follow you guys down that tunnel. If those things are using it as some of transit, then there's no telling what they'll do if they can see us coming."

Allie nods sadly, but you can tell she understands given the expression on her face. Kurtis's is much the same, but he looks more angry than disappointed, though given his standing with you, it's probably against the aliens. Getting up from the bed, Allie actually meets your gaze with a serious expression.

"So, do you want me to do anything about it?" she asks, earning a surprised look from you, "Kurtis has some supplies here we can extract it with if you want. But if you have somewhere to be or are against it, I won't force you."

"Personally, speaking", Kurtis starts, heading to the closet, "if something was listening into this conversation, wouldn't have our heads popped by now? Not that I'm against removing it, but it doesn't sound like a priority at the moment."

Unfortunately, I have work early in the morning so I'll have to update tomorrow after the tiebreaker resolves. I won't have enough time to write the update tonight either way.

As per your votes on the twitter, we'll be going with the full week schedule updates. I'll work my schedule around it a bit better this time, and we'll get more updates in every other day now. Starting Monday 6 PM EST, expect weekly updates to be at this time and giving me a week or so in between session to recover and plan for more writing.

Anyways have a good evening /qst/.

"We'll have to do something about it eventually", you state, getting up from the bed, "but we'll have to hold off for the moment. I've got a meeting with someone anyways."

"Yeah, no worries Paula" Allie replies, and moving towards the closet herself, "we'll keep in touch on what we find in the tunnel as well. Guess Kurtis is going to have to call in sick today."

"You wish" Kurtis retorts, looking at her incredulously, "I said one hour in there, in and out even if we find something."

There is a slight huff from Allie as he details his conditions; conditions you were probably guessing he placed there beforehand. For all of the dangerous curiosity and obsession with the aliens and Gantz, Allie had begun to ease up a little from the girl you'd met and incarcerated prior. You gave a slight chuckle at her displeasure with Kurtis's condition before moving towards the front of the house.

"Oh, before I forget as well" Allie says, following close to you, "if we're heading out to the park for training, I'll probably arrive late along with Kurtis. Just didn't want you to worry or anything really."

You give her a thankful nod, turn towards to the door, and reply, "Be safe, ok? Both of you, see you at the park tonight."

Kurtis and Allie both repeat the last part of your farewell, and you quickly leave their home. As you head down the steps leading to Kurtis's home, you get a ring on your cell-phone. You look at the message as you walk down the sidewalk, and see it is address from Dante.

<Got a weird signal interruption and the call dropped earlier. Sorry for worrying you, and thank you for confirming the time. I'll send out a final message to the others in a bit.>

There's a twinge of worry in your neck about that odd signal interruption, considering those university campuses have incredibly good cell connection. You resolve to ignore it for now and just give a <Thank you, glad to know you're fine.> reply back to Dante. There was another more pressing matter in your head at the moment anyways. Looking through your contacts, you quickly called up Tanjeet.

"Hey Paula" Tanjeet's voice replied over the speaker, not quite as dreary as last time thankfully, "I got Dante's call and decided to join in for the session tonight if that's what you're calling for."

"It's not actually", you respond, trying to sound friendly, "it's actually something more simple. Are you up for lunch today as well, or do you still need some more time Tanjeet?"

There was a slight pause, followed by a grunt of effort as what you assumed was Tanjeet getting up given some of the shuffling you heard in the background. He finally replied, but sounded a little more nonchalant.

"Sure, but how's about this time you get to choose?" he suggests, and you ponder this for a second, "Nothing too fancy though, I've got to watch my spending before summer classes start."

"Yeah sure" you reply, and thinking on you answer, "there's a place in Chinatown Erick recommended a while back to me. I'll send you address, and try to meet me there at 12:00 or so."

"Gotcha" Tanjeet acknowledges, and you hear more shuffling, "the twins are packing up today so I guess I'll be getting a taxy there. See you there Paula, and...thanks for sending them my way."

You smile with satisfaction and sympathy at his gratitude, and quickly respond with, "Any time Tanjeet. See you there."

You turn off of the call right afterwards, and make a mental note of thanking the Claire and Silvia later for their help in aiding Tanjeet. For the moment however, there was the matter of getting to that restaurant in Chinatown. Thankfully, map searching on your phone quickly found Chinatown Express almost as quickly as you found a taxi cab to take you there.

<May 3rd, Thursday 12:15 PM>

The cab managed to take you to the mouth of K St Northwest before a heap of traffic began to overtake the road. You figured this would start happening eventually, given the lack of a Metro railway's convenient transportation, but not to this extent. It honestly made you think of many unused cars really were in DC, just gathering dust in their owner's garages. It was something would ponder as you made the rest of the way on foot, telling the cabbie to let you off near the sidewalk and paying him his due.

'So many damn taxi visits used this week...those guys must be making a killing off of the Metro closure...'

Whatever good fortune was with the taxi services, wasn't reflecting on people as you made your way to the restaurant. You'd remembered DC's crowds to usually be of regular pace but they were almost speeding past you on the sidewalks. Like they were all pacing or trying to look at their phones while doing so. It seemed that whatever lingering fears or worries in the Metro Center closure were beginning make people more nervous.

In spite of the faster pace on the sidewalk, you made it to the restaurant without too much trouble and spotted Tanjeet near the green window.

"Hey Paula!" he greeted, waving to you as you got closer, "I thought you might have gotten caught out in traffic as well, so I waited around. This is the place right?"

"Yeah, this is the place" you reply, motioning him into the small entrance, "shall we go in? I've never been here, so you're as lost as I am on what to get."

Tanjeet followed you inside, responding similarly that he was also lost. You took note of the more calm tone he had as you made your way inside. Taking in the rustic decor, the fish tank, and the noodle maker in the front, you led Tanjeet to a nearby table. After a waitress got you some menu, and some fresh water on the house, you decided to order.

Upon deciding to order up a more fresh meal, Tanjeet makes a gesture to get your attention to something in the front. It's a line of people, or rather a crowd of people that are starting to pile into the restaurant lead by some of the waiters. You let out a sigh of relief, knowing full well that the lunch rush didn't catch you for once.

"Not 5 minutes since we got in here" Tanjeet comments, putting down his menu, "if that traffic was any indication, I think everyone else in the city may be backed up. Think I'll have the Chicken of Four Seasons today."

"I'll get something light" you follow up, and doing a quick look-around the restaurant, "since training is tonight and all. And yeah, the place is filling out really quick, guess the Metro has got everyone either running or moving at a snail's pace."

"I did a bit of digging into that as well Paula", he adds, pulling out his phone, "officially, it's a rescue operation for a woman that fell onto the tracks. Unofficially, they caught someone during an assault and kidnapping down there, but couldn't find him or the victim."

"From what I understand, the camera footage showed him heading for the tracks instead of the entrance. Probably some crazy hyped up on something, but they haven't been able to find a body or-"

Tanjeet doesn't finish your own waiter blindsides you with a greeting and quickly moves to take your order and then Tanjeet's order. The speed at which that Asian lady wrote it down is incredible, but given their business it's probably natural to them by now. Turning back to Tanjeet, you actually see him look somewhat regretful.

"Damn, sorry Paula" Tanjeet apologizes, "I shouldn't be talking about something that morbid right before we're about to eat."

"No it's actually fine Tanjeet", you reply, easing him up a little, "If anything, I'm just glad you're talking now considering where you were a couple of days back."

"Well, if I'll be totally honest there's still a lot on my mind about it. But honestly, I think yesterday was the tipping for me on that."

You blink a little, wondering if lunch had been that good to cause him to change his mind or if the twins had managed to feng-shui his troubles away.

"When we were in the forest, training away", he starts, pointing his thumb at himself "I thought on how difficult that whole session was, and how frustrated I was getting. And I thought on what Maria would say if she saw me like that."

Tanjeet's words were very heartfelt, like a realization to a past endeavor. He almost had your full attention, until you saw something, no, someone in the front. There were two sun-glasses wearing women there, one in a black overcoat, and another in a traditional Chinese suit. They were talking with one of the staff right outside, but you could't hear given the distance.

What you did spot, was a very familiar spider and scorpion tatoo right on their necks.

"Now, Claire and Silvia are relying on me" Tanjeet continues, but slowly meeting your gaze, "they care about Maria as well and-...Paula what are you looking at?"

You don't take your eyes off of the front, even as you answer Tanjeet, "There's two suspicious individuals in at the entrance, and I think I may know who they are. Sorry Tanjeet, but I need to move close and see what they're up to."

There's a slight shift in your seat as you move out of it gently to not draw too much attention yet retain a swift movement to the front. Just then however, Tanjeet grabs your arm and gives you a concerned look.

"Do you need any help...?" he ask, a familiar tone of fearless aid coming over him, "I didn't bring my suit so-"

"It's fine, just let go" you command, perhaps too roughly as Tanjeet quickly lets you go, "Sorry, but please just stay in your seat and try to act normal; this won't take too long."

He nods silently and returns to the comfort of his seat, taking out his phone. You keep your eyes fixed on the front, and make your way to the front end of the restaurant. With those two women outside of the restaurant, you might not hear them even if you got up to the door. There's not many places to hid or not look suspicious here, so you resolve to head outside, and hope to act almost completely inconspicuous among the crowd of people coming and going.

'There's nowhere to go invisible here anyways without being spotted' you think, making your way past the door, 'too many people as is, and there's no telling what'll happen if I keep bumping into them while invisible...'

As you exit the restaurant, you finally get a good glimpse at the two women. The one with the overcoat, and scorpion tattoo, is actually quite small, barely making it to five feet, and had blonde hair that flowed free, though you could tell she dyed it pretty poorly given the visible black roots. The other one, with the spider tattoo, was quite tall by comparison, almost to Kurtis's own height and sported a black ponytail. Both of them had the same kind of rounded sunglasses, and sported dark, leather gloves on their hands.

Your gaze only lingered so much, as you tried to move away from the restaurant and towards a better vantage point. But you quickly decided against doing so, as you overhead them speaking to the employee in Chinese. You should have figured they wouldn't just speak english casually, but it also meant you just wasted your time heading out here. Simulating a stretch near the sidewalk, far enough away that it wouldn't look too suspicious, you resolved to return back to Tanjeet.

That was until you saw two other men, leave out of a parked sedan near the street corner. One looked like a young Chinese man, with a similar pair of gloves and sunglasses to the women, but the other one was white. His face, body type and clothes were all to familiar to you, as you had spent several days looking at his profile in a police dossier.

There's no way you didn't recognize him by now, it was unmistakably Marcus Holdings even under the aviator shades. Whatever he was doing here, it wouldn't matter in a few seconds if they noticed you listening in. It didn't even matter to you if he even knew what you looked like, all that mattered now was that you need to get back to the table.

'Back inside', you scream in your head, their forms approaching closer, 'Back inside, now!'

As deftly as you could, you took a small stride near the crowd building up near the front. The swiftness of your action ended as you pushed and shoved alongside them to get to the front, all the while shouting that you already had a table in there. They couldn't have stopped you from getting in, but you tried to make yourself look as a normal customer to the two triad women still talking to the employee.

Thankfully, they seemed either too busy with their conversation to really take a look at you or not interested the commotion in the front end. They hadn't turned around the entire time from their little chat so you hoped it had been the latter. Giving one final sideways glance at them, you spotted that young Chinese man come up to the employee and almost motioning them away from the front, before the sight disappeared behind the doors.

There was aching in your stomach at not investigating the event further or even helping that man if he had been in trouble. Yet, you knew very well several scenarios that would have very well occurred if you'd followed through with your police officer's duty. It wasn't a good feeling, but you dismissed it as you approached your table. Thankfully, Tanjeet had done as you asked, and stayed still, and now there two plates of delicious food waiting there for you to eat them.

"Paula, glad to have you back" Tanjeet spoke up, putting his phone away, "I asked them for regular utensils, since I don't know if you can use chopsticks. Anyways, did anything happen up there?"

You take a second to sit down, and a slight breath in before saying, "No...nothing substantial, but I now know that at least the man that killed Yukino is in the city. As to why, I didn't want to take the chance and linger too long snooping in."

"I wouldn't have done it either" he replies, starting on his food, "but what are you afraid of though? Even if you can't use the suit in public, thugs should be nothing to you."

"It's no the triad I'm afraid of, it's him", you answer, biting into the first few burdock on your plate "he's a player like us, and I promised not to engage him until next week. Just so Yukino can have her answer, and get her some closure."

"Claire and Silvia mentioned something about that" Tanjeet continues, sipping on some of his own tea, "an investigation you were doing about that guy. What exactly-"

Tanjeet's voice was drowned out by a visual block in your eyes. At the entrance, you saw the doors part. Moving forward with a light step, were the two triad women.

"-were you investigating around him?" Tanjeet's words reach your ears, but he slowly realized again what is happening, "Paula-, is it something at the entrance again?"

You immediately take your gaze back to Tanjeet, and try to lower your voice, "Two of the Triad I spotted outside are moving into the restaurant. Act normal, keep eating and try not to look around too much."

"What if they approach us...?" Tanjeet asks, somewhat worriedly, "we're not exactly armed here and there's not much you can do with this many witnesses if you activate that suit."

"Then we try to either act innocent" you answer, glancing a little at the front, "or escape out of here fast. If worst comes to worst, we'll lead them into an alley and then I'll use the suit."

Tanjeet nods slowly, and returns to his meal with his chopsticks. With his attention solely on the food, you decide to do the same while keeping the Triad women on your peripheral vision; throwing the odd glance to see any change. The one with the scorpion tattoo had actually stopped near the front entrance steps, looking around the restaurant for something or someone while licking her lips a little.

You immediately returned to your food, hoping she didn't spot you. The amount of worry in your stomach was actually affecting how this meal tasted. Even as you bit down on the steamed beef, it hard to make out. You would have assumed it was delicious given how much Tanjeet seemed to be enjoying his, but your mind was occupied on more than taste at the moment.

Between each draw of food, you gave a glance up to see them. At the first one, the Scorpion was still looking around, while the Spider was now moving forward towards the back end. At the second one, the Spider followed suit with both them coming dangerously close to your table. You almost recoiled at the second glance, and tried to keep your composure as they both approached the side of your table.

Tanjeet was keen on your gaze and immediate return to your food, looking at you for some sign or motion to escape. You gave no such notion, even as the two triad were right next to your table. Seconds seemed like minutes as their bodies almost seemed to brush next to you and Tanjeet. You kept your breath held for a second longer, until you heard woman's voice speak out right next to you.

"Enjoying the food here?" the voice asked in a too curious manner, and you didn't dare to look to your left, "because I can certainly say I'm enjoying the view right now. Fufufu, what's your name cutie?"

In spite of the voice being right next to you, its direction as pointed towards Tanjeet. You keep loose heavy eye contact with him, but he had already looked up by then. You wanted to kick him so he didn't talk back, but by the time you raised your foot, he had already spoken.

"I'm sorry, are you talking to me...?"

That pit of worry in your stomach deepened, as you gave a glance at a long and oddly sharp grin overcame her face.

You didn't need to look at her neck to see it was the Scorpion triad member, the terrible dye job on her hair gave that way. Not that you could look away much, as she was literally next to you. You could even note the smell of cigarette smoke and Mentos in her breath a she grinned at Tanjeet. It was like a tiger staring at a oblivious deer, predatory and very intent on making him her own.

"Don't act dumb, you know I'm referring to you" the woman answered, somewhat amused, "or do you think I'm talking to your girlfriend here? Not into other girls though, sorry to get your hopes up."

Her gaze shifted to you at the final part of her statement. The playful sarcasm was grating with how conceited she sounded in it, almost making you scowl. Whether or not you liked it, you knew that staying the course and shutting up would be best for keeping a low profile. She quickly turned her attention back to Tanjeet, almost giggling after saying that to you.

"What do you say we exchange some information" she continued, and fished a white card from her jacket's inner pocket, "I've got my phone, name, and occupation on this card. You only have to tell me your name, and it's all yours."

The card in question was no doubt a business card, but you were doubtful it was really this woman's real information. Even if it wasn't, there was no telling what a Triad would do with a name on hand. Though, you knew that Tanjeet wouldn't do something that idiotic. Judging by how hard this woman was trying though, even most guys would have turned her down.

"It's a nice offer" Tanjeet replied, pondering his options, "and I think I'll take you up on it."

'WHAT?!'

"My full name is Pradhan Balakrishnan, I can spell it out for you if it helps pronouncing it."

'Oh, ok but...what are you doing Tanjeet...?'

"No worries, I have an excellent memory" the triad woman replied, moving to Tanjeet's side, "I just hope you do as well. I do so love making memories with people I like."

There was another disgusting giggle out of her mouth, before she came down and placed the business card on Tanjeet's side of the table. There was another long, toothy grin from her as she gave Tanjeet a pat on his cheek. He almost recoiled, but looked somewhat calm in accepting it. You grimaced at this sight, but a long shout in Chinese came from the hall behind you.

"YEAH! I'M COMING!" the Scorpion triad replied, and then gave you both a smile, "Enjoy your meals and please don't cause trouble in Chinatown. Have a good one cutie."

She departed with a brisk pace after waving Tanjeet goodbye, to which he waved back, while keeping a mock smile on his face. As soon as she dissapeared into the kitchen, you heard Tanjeet let out a breath of worry and plant his head onto the table. You were about let out a sigh yourself, until you noticed some of the tables were look at you guys funny. You waved them off, before speaking to Tanjeet.

"I panicked, alright" he interjected, though he sounded calm, "I didn't know whether I should indulge her or just refuse. Guess I did both and it thankfully turned out well."

"More than well I say" you add, chuckling a little, "considering how she responded, I think she's expecting a call from you tonight. She's gonna be waiting a long time though."

"You can say that again", Tanjeet replies, somewhat annoyed now, "I'm not messing around with her. Even if I didn't know she wasn't in a Triad, it's just bad news waiting to happen."

He picks up the card from the table, and gives it a look before sliding it to your end of the table.

"Here, you can take it Paula. It might help in that investigation of yours."

You give him a light "thanks" before picking up the card yourself. By all accounts, it's an ordinary business card with the normal five lines of information and a logo to the side to designate the company in question. It was under 'Fa-Lee Urban Housing & Development LLC', with what looked like a tree as its logo beneath. The name on the card was that of Yang Fa-Lee, a senior project manager, along with a phone number and an address to what you assumed was her office.

After pocketing the business card, you gave Tanjeet a grateful look, "if it means anything, you've always been a great help. Don't forget that we all see that about you, even if you don't want to believe it's for a noble cause Tanjeet."

"Thanks Paula", he replies, sounding a little more reassured, "If anything, I should thank you. Even if this wasn't exactly comfortable."

"Honestly, it's a quicker way to learn" you respond in sympathy, "my dad always said that it was better to learn through a bad time than a good one. Just gotta have someone to help you up if it gets too rough."

"Indeed", he acknowledged, smiling a little, "anyways, let's finish up our lunch. It might have gotten cold during all of this..."

You shrugged, and started forking more pieces of meat and veggies into your mouth. Tanjeet did the same, while tossing in more of his ideas regarding Marcus and the case. All the while, you kept an eye out if those women returned.

<May 3rd, Thursday 1:35 PM>

The rest of the meal went off peacefully and, in spite of the slightly cold warmth of the food, it was as delicious as Erick had made it out to bed. Making a mental note to take him here at some point after you got him back, you quickly paid off your check and saw Tanjeet off at the entrance. Not a few moments later, a text came in from Kurtis.

<Paula, I'm using Kurtis's phone at the moment, but it's about the tunnel. It's empty, save for a large, black hatch that leads into a massive black tube. I don't know what this is but...it doesn't look good.>

A few question pop up in your head as you read her message. The first of which is her own safety, and whether or not she's still in that tunnel. You suspected it might not be the case, considering she was able to get a cell phone message out. But the other question is now on where Kurtis was. You didn't ask either in a message, as instead you decided to call her back, as you tried to find a taxi.

"Paula, is this you?", Allie's voice sounded off from the phone's speaker.

"Yes, and I just got your message. Are you and Kurtis alright?"

"Yeah, we're fine, I'm calling you from Kurtis's house. He went to work and I'm currently just going over our findings."

"Good, honestly I'm just glad you're safe considering the last thing that happened in that place. I'll be over there in a little bit see what you found, alright?"

"Of course, I'll be waiting. Also...thank you again Paula."

You return her gratitude with a 'You're Welcome', before ending the call. Pocketing your phone, you quickly look back on the street for a taxi to take you back to 1421 Belmont. If Allie's findings rang well enough, maybe it'll shed some light on what is going on with those lizards. Or at least, you're hoping it does.

<May 3rd, Thursday 2:15 PM>

After paying your fare for the taxi, and climbing up the stairs to Kurtis's house for the second time today, Allie was gracious enough not to ask password questions again. Instead, she quickly led you in, holding the door against herself, and shutting it closed before even the light of day could spot her. In spite of the justified paranoia, you were at least glad that she was quick about it this time.

"Glad to have you back" Allie stated, somewhat apologetically, "and did you already have lunch? Kurtis made some pesto before he left, so I can help you to some if you're hungry."

"Thank you Allie, but I actually just ate", you reply, and Allie nods understandingly, "my big concern right now is what you found in that tunnel. You mentioned it was a hatch and a tube right...?"

"Yes, this way", Allie answered, motioning you to Kurtis's bedroom.

Following close, you noted that she hadn't taken off her suit yet, and that there was a new addition to the bedroom. On the side wall, next to the computer, there was what looked like a long stack of bags. Next to that, was a camera set, which Allie when to pick up almost immediately as you came into the room.

"Got some picture here" she stated, pointed to her camera, "all of the info on that thing is the tunnel is in here. Take a look, please."

You did as she instructed, and opened up the camera's gallery. After skipping past a few low quality images, your eyes suddenly caught what she was talking about. Embedded into what you assumed was the floor, was a smooth, black rounded hatch, with another photo showing a dark, smooth tube that seemed to stretch past the camera's flash. There was another image though, this one of a display on the hatch with a digital screen.

The hatch is no doubt some point of entry or exit for whatever this is, and while the display on the hatch is interesting, the tube itself has more than you initially thought. Returning back to some of the images, you note several parts in greater detail looking through it. There are two small latches or dips onto the sides near the opening, sort of like a hand guard. In some of the photos you actually spot what you think is a turn in the tube, though the directional difference on the flash's light is so small you almost squint to see it.

"Did you or Kurtis test how far this thing goes?" you ask, looking through more of the images, "if it's in the floor, I'm going to guess this thing goes far underground."

"That's what we're assuming", Allie replies, heading towards one of the bags, "and unless there's some sort of lift system that we don't know about, it only seems to go up one way since there's no rails or even a ladder. I wouldn't even try going down that thing, but I have the sneaking suspicion it may be an escape hatch of sorts."

'Makes sense' you agree in your mind, 'the lizards never popped up out of there again...but is that really where they went?'

You turn away from the camera for a second, as the amount of details in the photos becomes more blurry after the final two you looked through. Hearing from rustling from Allie near the bags, you turn your attention to her and that large pile of grocery and hardware store bags. After a small, 'Aha!', she pulls out what you can only assume is a set of wheels from one of the bags.

"Had Kurtis bring these out of his attic" she starts, showing off that set of wheels to you, "little rovers and remote control sets I'm hoping to jury rig as drones for some exploration into that hole."

There a raised eyebrow at her suggestion, and you moved over to her side to see what was in those bags. That raised eyebrow turned to a look of disbelief as you spotted several hundred or so pieces of threads, wheels, chassis, computer boards, and all other sorts of equipment you had no idea how to work.

"What the hell did Kurtis do back in the army...?" you asked, giving Allie that same look of amusement, "this all looks like...military grade drone equipment. "

"Forward scout, deployed in Afghanistan" Allie said, pulling out another piece from the boxes, "also deployed to an anti-bomb/demolition crew and this was apparently leftovers from that. You'd be amazed some of the shit that guy's done."

'Yeah no kidding...'

"Anyways, you want to help me build it?" Allie asked, "the faster we finish it, the faster we can see what's at the bottom of that place."

You looked through all of the several bags around the room and suddenly got an uneasy feeling. It was more than just the fact that you didn't know the first thing about robots like Allie, but more about how this was all going to work out in the end. Even if you did find something and Allie's plan worked...what would you really do about it?

"O-ok, but I don't know the first thing about drones" you answer, moving closer to the bags, "do you have like instructions or a manual on these or...?"

"Don't worry Paula" Allie answers, giving you a grin, "I just need you as a supporting hand here. Let me focus on the building and programming, while you focus on part acquisition and set up."

You gave her a nod, but was nonetheless a little wary of what she needed you to do. At least, you had some information you wanted to pry out her as you helped out. Though, just identifying the pieces from each other seemed like a daunting task regardless given the sheer amount of them.

<SUCCESS> +1/2 Trust <Allie Pierce>

<May 3rd, Thursday 4:55 PM>

There were about seven different bags in that room, each one filled with an inordinate amount parts haphazardly placed in there. There was no organization, no real care to putting them in, just a jumbled mess of plastic, metal and wiring that seemed endless at a glance. In one hour, you managed to get it all organized and categorized to Allie's instructions.

She was incredibly detailed in her organization, so much so you almost had trouble keeping up with the differences in parts. Afterwards came the sorting and eventual building of the mobile drone. Among the parts, there were a few blueprints for some of the little threaded drones that Kurtis had no doubt utilized during his time in the army. Allie decided on a threaded model, one that Kurtis said was utilized for mining and cave reconnaissance.

As you got the parts set up for her, you asked about what she had found out in the Gantz LIVE program; mainly relating to what she mentioned about correlating past information. She almost perked up from the blueprint as you asked her this, no doubt trying to concentrate and answer your question. After a second or so of waiting, she answered in kind while directing you for the appropriate parts.

According to her, the earliest instance of Gantz occurred in about five years ago in February, directly linked to a newspaper headline about missing teenagers turning up missing or dead after a prior accident in New York. It was the case of Daniel Wallace, which you remembered correlating to the date yourself. You didn't think much on it, until Allie explained something interesting.

Besides another case taking place in the week following Daniel's disappearance, there were no other instances of disappearances in New York until November of the same year. Allie had no thought as to why there was a gap, but then saw it happen in other cities as well with their recruiting dates.

It was a strange occurrence no doubt, but Allie seemed more happy than anything as she mentioned getting some closure. She had apparently found the name of her old boss, Thomas Atkinson, along with the names of all of her prior co-workers for the Aliens R Alive blog listed in the program's history. They were all dead, with the program listing them all gone in the same night they were recruited.

It sounded like she was taking a weight from her shoulders, but you could tell it was nonetheless painful to remind herself. You no doubt encouraged her, and continued work on the drone. Though, even with the renewed vigor, you only managed to get the drone itself built before Allie called it a day.

"I'll finish up with the remote and programming on my own", Allie said, grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge, "but thanks Paula, you were a big help. Kurtis can help me putting these away."

"No worries", you replied, giving her a thumbs up, "honestly, talking that reminded me of those days back in HQ."

"I kind of wanted to forget really" you continue, sitting down in the living room couch, "about two or so weeks ago and how you managed to get in here. Remember, how I said that the reason you were in this game was because of me?"

"Paula...I've come to terms with it already" Allie replied, her face dropping a little, "what happened with Erick, the station, everything. Besides, it was me that dug too deep in the first place, you said so back then as well."

"Maybe you did, but I don't think I have" you interject, returning a bit of her dejected look, "Erick's death put a lot of that into perspective. How a lot of what I've done to help him may have hurt a lot of other people along the way."

"Paula you can't-" Allie starts, but you quickly stomp your feet to interrupt her.

"No, I have to get it off my chest Allie. I was jealous and even desperate for Erick's attention, like some damn fifteen year old girl crush. The way you kept harassing him, and speaking to him got under my skin."

"So much so...that I suggested in getting you arrested to him from the start, because I couldn't handle someone else like that. I was afraid of his own security and about Gantz's information getting out, but in a way I felt like I was justifying my actions."

Allie's face looks down again, though it's not necessarily sadness in her eyes you spot. Her eyes are downcast sure, but there is something else in there. It almost seems like she was understanding of it all. Noticing this, you finalize your thought.

"When you said that Erick deserved someone like me, I couldn't help but think of a lot of this. I'm sorry Allie, about everything, but mostly because I know I may have ruined a good moment for you after finishing that drone."

The atmosphere in the house had dropped to zero, as barely a sound flowed through it. It made you stomach turn, not because of the silence itself, but because of how little Allie was moving. You'd spoken to her about this prior, but never really in depth to this degree. After ten agonizingly long seconds, Allie finally spoke up.

"I don't think I can ever forgive you or Erick for what happened. My life, my home, all of the work I did was destroyed or condemned by either you or Gantz."

It wasn't the first time she'd said this, but you figured it was well deserved. Even if it was for your own safety, Allie's recruitment had destroyed her future.

"But I can't hate you or him", Allie continued, "because, as I see it, you two are the reason I have gained so much knowledge as well. And if I ever leave for good, I want to at least leave you all with part of that."

"Allie...", you replied, quite surprised.

For as unstable as she was, you didn't think Allie could be this understanding. Or maybe, spending so much time with Kurtis was starting to affect her.

"Hey, just cause I can't forgive you," Allie smiled, coming closer, "doesn't mean you can't forgive yourself. Anyways, if you don't have anything else to do right now..."

"Actually I have to get going in a bit", you respond, getting up off the couch, "I need to get a decent sweat going before our training session."

"I see" Allie replies, nodding her head, "well, I guess I'll see you then. And don't worry, I'll keep you posted if anything else happens on our end."

You give her a nod of acknowledgement, before you head out of Kurtis's house. It stung knowing that Allie may never truly forgive you for what happened, but you knew that she'd still remain loyal in spite of it. As you paced down the walkway of Kurtis's house, you reflected on the past encounters with this woman, as well as how your own failings had helped to form the group.

<May 3rd, Thursday 6:00 PM>

Taxi cab fare wasn't getting any less annoying, as the trains would remain out until the end of the weekend, but at least they were still serviceable for the most part. You weren't really faulting on any money at the moment, but you figured it'd be a problem if you were to use this service for longer than a few months. Regardless, you managed to make it home and obtained your exercise gear while also deciding to jog the rest of the way there.

It wasn't too difficult, but by the time you managed to make it to the gym, you realized that there might be that much time left in the day for an exercise routine. One hour wasn't a good enough time for a full range upper body work-out, but you decided to give it a shot either way. Grabbing your equipment, you headed inside and made for the closest bench press machine.

<GREAT SUCCESS> <2/8 to STR Increase>
<May 3rd, Thursday 6:30 PM>

A normal workout for you was usually between 1 to 2 hours. This was more because you valued breaks between practice and training, more to let yourself recuperate between reps and to let your effort set in. However, with so little time, it made part of your physical exercise haphazard and uneven. With no room for breaks between your reps, it wasn't an easy effort after pound and pound of machinery was lifted up by you.

Yet even with only so much time to work with, you managed to retain a good amount tone in your upper body. You were considered above average back in the academy physical trials, but the added musculature was certainly going to increase your performance once your training is over. Regardless, the burning sensation in your arms was a sign of good progress.

Utilizing one of the gym's complementary towels, you dried the excess sweat from your face before looking at your phone.

'30 minutes until the meeting', you think, eyeing the phone's clock, 'just enough time to get home and get the gear.'

You thanked the efficient time you made on your workout, as you made your way to the entrance. There was a slight ache in your left arm as you opened the door, but you powered through it. While your body was tired, it wasn't exhausted to the point of not going to the training session. Though, you knew better than to jog home at the moment.

Mainly because you were spared for time, and you didn't want to exert yourself further.

<May 3rd, Thursday 7:00 PM>

"Thanks for the pick-up again Dante", you called out, nestled in the back seat of Dante's sedan.

The aforementioned Dante gave you an "Any time" before he returned his gaze back to the main road. The main road towards Roosevelt Park was closer to the gym and, subsequently, your home so you gave him a call to pick you up. Chris had been in the co-pilot seat with him when he arrived, but he was unusually silent since he arrived. Though, you were somewhat thankful that he wasn't making another fuss, even after you picked up your gear and headed to the park.

"Allie called me up, told me she and Kurtis were going to be late" Dante spoke up, approaching the park bridge, "also mentioned that you were helping her with a project."

"Yeah, they found something in one of the tunnels near the warehouse", you replied, "we think it's some sort of escape hatch or tube for those aliens that attacked you. Since we can't safely enter it, I helped her make a drone to survey it."

"No kidding" Dante half asked, and you nodded back, "Heh, everyone's full of surprises now. Anyway's let's get going."

The car came to a gradual stop as it reached the bridge's entrance, with Dante parking it near the treeline. Taking off your seat-belt and heading outside, Dante opened up the back to get your gear. Heading back the normal trail, you arrived to the statue plaza and benches, though the others hadn't arrived yet.

"Hey, where the hell is everyone?" Chris spoke up, almost startling you as you placed your duffelbag near one of the benches.

"Calm down, give them a few minutes" Dante answered back, doing the same as you, "I doubt they'd skip out on something like this after the last mission."

Christ scoffed at Dante, before grabbing on the nearby rifles from Dante's bag and facing one of the overlooking trees. Even with the low visibility, you could tell there was a scowl on his face as he drew a bead on that one unlucky tree. Dante looked like he was going to stop him from shooting yet, but Chris's deft fingers beat him to the triggers. A flash of light illuminated the front of Chris's weapon, and two more times before Dante got his hands on him.

"Hey! What the hell are you doing?", Dante said, grabbing the weapon out of his hands.

"Target practice" Chris retorted, trying to pull the gun back to his side, "not as if we're doing fucking anything while we wait. Let go damnit-"

In between this, there's a resounding crack and splintering of wood in the forest as the tree's upper branches explode in splinters. You take this time, and part of their flinching, to put yourself between them.

"Wait, I think he's got the right idea" you interject, placing your hand on Dante's shoulder, "we should be using this time to our advantage and he's just taking initiative. Come on, he's not gonna hurt anyone here anyways."

Dante gives you a look like he wants to reply back, but he sighs and gives Chris his gun back. Figures that Dante's worried about Chris's rash behavior, and you kind of understand that, but he normally isn't this jumpy about it. After letting it go, you instruct Dante to grab a weapon and start up on a nearby target. And while he complies, you can't help but feel he's giving you a worried look as well.

"Thanks Paula" Chris quietly says, as he goes back to shooting another tree.

You give him a silent nod as you also aim down the sights of your own rifle towards another tree. This target practice continues in silence, save for the mechanical whirring of the rifles and the splintering of parts of the tree-line, for about 10 minutes before you spot a few familiar faces entering the plaza.

"Whoa, look like you guys go started without us" Claire speaks up, and quickly quiets down as she spots Chris.

"Sorry about the delay", Silvia says, placing down her own duffelbag, "had to pick up and sneak Yukino out on the way here."

"And digging up my old gear as well" Tanjeet adds, moving towards Dante.

"Dad thinks I'm sleeping right now" Yukino comments, as she approaches you, "but the fire-escape still works at least."

You approach Yukino giving her a slight hug, which she returns, before looking up at the others.

"Glad you all made it then. Anyways, time is short, so grab the weapon you know the least and start on target practice on the tree line."

The others gave a quick nod before going for the guns.

<BARE SUCCESS> -1 INT, +1 WIL <X-Rifle - NOVICE>
<May 3rd, Thursday 8:00 PM>

The rifle wasn't too difficult to utilize, as it was more or less just a long range version of the pistol. There was next to no weight difference, as you suit more than compensated for any additional weight the gun had, and, except for the change in shooting stance, the gun itself was simple enough to utilize. Though it seemed familiar enough, the weapons the rest of the group was utilizing didn't gel as quickly.

Tanjeet and the twins had decided to try out the big net gun, or rather the remaining one belonging to Erick, and were having issues accommodating for the trajectory of the weapon itself. Trying to help out, you quickly asserted the weapon didn't have that long of a range, and the nets themselves had a weight to them as they dropped. It wasn't easy but you showed them a more appropriate kneeling stance to take when utilizing the heavy weapon.

The police had more than drilled you in small arms fire, but you knew a thing or two about heavier weapons from some old friends in the riot units. Since the weapon carried a similiar weight distribution to one of the police's cannister launchers, it wasn't too difficult of a fit. Yukino training with deadly force however was a different story.

After finishing your lecture to the Tanjeet and the twins, and seeing that they were sufficiently better at firing and capturing with the weapon, Yukino called out for help with the pistols and the rifles. You figured she never fired them before, since Erick and yourself had constantly suggested she use the nets instead, but she more than eager to learn now. While the lectures were simple, Yukino's aptitude and attitude to working with Gantz's standard arms frightened you a bit.

She was smart, but the way she took to shooting and trigger discipline were too impressive given her age. While it was harder to brush the moralist part of you aside this time, you were somewhat unfocused from everyone's training. So much so, that you didn't get too much done yourself except familiarizing yourself a bit more with the rifle. The only ones that thankfully didn't need any help of course, were Dante and Chris, who seemed to quickly pick up on nearly all of the weapons at hand.

Taking a few more shots at a nearby tree, you heard a rustling near the side of the plaza. Everyone else followed your gaze to the other side of the tree line, as Kurtis and Allie had arrived as well.

"Hey everyone" Kurtis greeted, holding up what looked like a cooler, "hope we're not too late, but we brought drinks. Mostly water though, since I didn't know what you guys wanted."

"Yeah, kind of a hurry out of the house" Allie added, approaching you with her own duffelbag, "got started on the remote by the way, but it'll take me probably the rest of the weekend."

"No worries there", you reply, giving her a smile, and then looking at the others.

"Everyone!" you shout, getting the attention of the team, "take a five minute break, and then we're going to go back to working on Kurtis's alternating fire drill again. Rifles, pistols, and net pistols only for this next one."

"What?" Chris exclaims, surprising the others, "we already know how to shoot, doesn't take a genius to figure out the reload time for the guns. Why are we working on timing that shit?"

"Because it's helping us to better cover our teammates" Kurtis responds, moving forward to Chris, "and from how you're talking, I think you know something about the drill itself. Care to explain, genius?"

Chris was about to meet his approach, but was stopped by Dante who was holding him back at the shoulder. Christ was giving him a look of annoyance, but he didn't resist physically. Regardless, Kurtis met Chris close and the two stared daggers at each other as Chris replied back.

"Don't know shit about a drill or whatever, but I've played enough shooters to know about reload timing between teams. Not that I care either way, I wasn't planning on participating either way."

Kurtis was holding back a scowl, but you could see he wasn't amused by what Chris said. Dante wasn't as subtle however.

"What the hell is with you today?" Dante snarled, pulling back Chris further, "you were quiet for once yesterday but today you're acting like a fool again. Are you trying to make everyone hate you again Chris?"

"Yeah Chris, he's only trying to help" Tanjeet interjects, "you don't have to be with us if you don't want to. Just follow-"

"Like you even care" Chris interrupts, facing Dante and pulling away from his grip, "you only care about what dad says to you anymore. Well, two can play at that game."

Dante, for the first time in a long time, actually flinched as Chris said that. Not that it looked like Chris cared, as he moved to the duffelbag and pulled out that massive gun you saw him use back in the warehouse.

"Besides, what the hell do I care what they think of me. If you need me, I'll be out of your sight with this, don't bother me."

There was a small motion on Dante, almost like he was about to get up and start running after Chris, but you placed your hand on his shoulder to calm him down. You knew full well that this was another one of his tantrums, and it was better to just let him deal with his own frustration. Dante let out a frustrated sigh of his own before speaking.

"Whatever...what are you all looking at? You heard Paula, get your drink and take your break."

The command was almost so abrupt it made everyone turn away and head for the cooler in silence. Dante gave Chris one last look, as he disappeared past the tree line, before heading for the cooler himself.

"What the hell is his problem?" Kurtis asks, now next to you and looking somewhat worried himself.

"Don't know this time" you answer, and then take a glance back at Dante, "but I get the feeling Dante knows."

<SUCCESS> <MANEUVER UNLOCKED - Alternating Fire - Cover teammates with timed fire, while they reload, but they must have this maneuver - Re-Roll >5 on shooting once per roll>

<May 3rd, Thursday 9:45 PM>

After the short break, Kurtis lined up everyone close to the benches in order to start up on the drill. Like last time, he placed you all into separate squads of three and gave you a familiar set of instructions. One person fires into a target, and the other two make up up the lost time between weapon recharge to cover that person. After three consecutive lines of fire, you would rotate one person to the adjacent group.

Unlike the previous time, you were much more prepared for it and quickly took to the timing of the others. The five second recharge of the pistol was easy enough to cover, as the others followed a much more set pattern of timing. Towards the end of the training, Kurtis wasn't even giving you queues anymore and letting you find a more fluid rate of fire with the others. Considering where you stood in this last time, it was a much more fluid exercise this time.

The others fared much better as well, even alternating between weapons to better test out the timing. You would have done so yourself, but you were more than capable with just one of the pistols in regulating your fire. Accounting for the different weapons timing on the others was tricky, but simple after you got a good round going. After what seemed like nearly two hours of non-stop firing, and part of the treeline now inexorably gone, Kurtis called off the exercise.

"Alright, that was much better guys!" he congratulated, clapping his hands at your apparent success, "there's still some parts we need to work on but that's more or less the firing drill. So long as you keep concentrated fire, we won't even need automatics dealing with the aliens."

"I don't think we really need automatics anyways" Tanjeet comments, earning an odd look from Kurtis, "I mean, it's useful for increasing rate of fire sure, but I can only really see it as useful if we're dealing with a mass amount, which I don't think we've come across."

"Yet, or that you've seen" you interject, earning everyone attention, "there was a swarm of aliens back at the cathedral, and I wish I had known this drill back then. It pays to be prepared, even if we don't need it at the moment."

Tanjeet retracts back a little and just sighs in agreement. Everyone else is nonetheless thankful to Kurtis, to which he replies with a modest wave. Thinking of what else to do with the remaining time, you head over to Dante for some suggestions. As you approach him though, his head turns right in the measure of the treeline.

Your gaze follows suit, and in the darkness you see Chris perched atop of the one taller trees around the plaza. He doesn't stay much longer on there as he quickly jumps from the branch, with his suit's boots cushioning his fall.

"You got a minute?" he says, as he approaches you and Dante.

"Yeah, what is it Chris?" you reply, looking at him straight.

He doesn't reply back, instead just keeps walking straight ahead. The others take notice quickly enough, and join you and Dante as he approaches. He gets up right in front of you, with Dante standing right at the ready if he tries something. Though you couldn't make out his features before, you can certainly see that he's been in the forest for a while now.

The arms and legs of his Gantz suit are covered in dirt, mud or wet leaves, no doubt from from the amount of forest he must have been clearing on his own. This is especially true around his face and his right hand, where an equally caked weapon is held aloft by him. If you didn't know any better, this kid had just gone out in killing spree on the park's trees and river. Yet...you can also tell there's something surprisingly calm about his face right now.

"I want to speak to Paula and Dante" he states, no doubt addressing the others, "alone, in private. Please, that's all I ask."

"Making a request?" Kurtis replies, stepping forward, "I think you owe this group an apology first before-"

"No, it's fine Kurtis" you interrupt, putting your hand up to stop him, "we'll deal with this ourselves. Start up the group to some more shooting exercises if you want."

Kurtis gives Chris a look of concern, before he replies back with, "Fine, but we probably won't be here too much longer. Don't take too long, ok?"

"We won't", Dante replies for you, and heads over to Chris's side.

You follow his lead, giving one last reassuring glance at the others, before disappearing behind the treeline. Thankfully, it was the side that you and the others hadn't shot to splinters during the firing drill, and instead faced the Potomac River. You actually remembered this, as the place where Erick had first shown you the rifle.

In spite of the secluded scenery, you could see the city lights off in the other side of the river. Dante and Chris stopped at the shoreline and, to your surprise, Chris actually sat down facing the sandbank. Dante was about to sit down with him, until Chris spoke up.

"Been thinking about what you said the other day Paula, about not remembering the dead. Didn't think it was too much on it, just something stupid that smart people said to make them feel better than me."

There was a twitch in your brow as you listened to him. It was almost irritation, but you swallowed your pride and kept listening.

"But today, dad said something that reminded me of it."

A worried look appeared on Dante's face as Chris mentioned this. Almost as if he wanted to prevent Chris from speaking further.

"He was angry, angrier than he normally was" Chris continued, his voice remaining calm, "and he said things to himself, like how meeting my mother was a mistake and how much he hated her for helping Dante's mother. I wouldn't normally care, she's dead after all, but after what you said Paula, I can't stop thinking about it."

"That's good" you reply, earning a look from Dante, "you're thinking about something important. Your dad sounds like an asshole regardless."

That last bit elicits a small chuckle from him. He doesn't turn around though, and continues sitting down on the sandbank with his back turned to you and Dante.

"You should know, apparently you're the one that got him mad" Chris adds, eliciting another wry chuckle from himself, "kept saying 'Torrez' between cussing someone out on the phone. But whatever is going on between you two, it's beginning to annoy me now."

He gets up from the sand bank, but doesn't turn around from his spot. It wasn't the first time he'd done this, not showing his face when talking while troubled, as he continued to speak.

"Why should I care about the dead?" Chris questioned, his voice sounding almost worried, "they're gone, and are never coming back. Even if they died in Gantz, bringing them back is just another death sentence anyways; pointless."

Dante shakes his head next to you, and moves forwards to speak, "I don't know about the Gantz thing, but I think you're thinking in a wrong place here. We care about people when they're alive because they're close to us Chris, and we care about when they're dead because their memories meant something to us."

"But what's the point in thinking about it?" he retorts, still looking at the city's lights, "it's not gonna change anything and it won't make you feel good. So why even remember it in the first place?"

"Because in the end you cared" you reply, trying to raise your voice over Dante, "no matter how much you don't want feel terrible, you can't deny they mattered to you Chris. What do you usually do when you feel grief?"

Chris only replies after a few seconds, by lifting up that massive weapon he has to his side. A second later, he pushes down the triggers and a circular force slams into the river. You and Dante shield your eyes for a second from the large spray of water splashing down from the site of the explosion. While you and Dante look onward at the disturbance Chris caused in the river, as he finally turns around.

"I've loved that for a long time" Chris starts, dropping his weapon to his side, "punching, kicking, slashing, shooting, fighting all feel good. But this, Gantz, and everything in it are something else."

"Dante already knew that, called me crazy for wanting to stay here for so long. But, why would I want to leave when it's the only place where I can truly feel happy?"

It didn't surprise you that Chris's whole defense mechanism for dealing with his trauma amounted to his damn tantrums. But the way he spoke about Gantz was something that honestly disturbed you. Given everything you knew, and that he knew, about it, calling the game a happy place sounded a psychotic idea. It was like an escape for him, indistinguishable from the grim reality so long as he got his fill of blissful ignorance.

"Chris," you speak up, loud enough for him to hear you, "you can't keep repressing it forever. I know it's awful to deal with grief, but if you keep this up-"

'And what makes you think I can't keep it up forever?" Chris interrupts, giving you an estranged look, "sure, I died once, and I'll admit it was my fault because I was frustrated with everything at that point. But now, thanks to you and Erick, I have a clearer focus on the game."

"What the hell are you talking about?" Dante asks, looking both surprised and worried, "Erick and Paula are trying to keep you from going further into this shit. In other words, not to reaffirm what you've done already."

"It sounded like that at first" Chris replied, looking eerily happy, "but the main thing is that I can't just throw my life away like I did before, because I know it will hurt you Dante. Which is why I just need to get stronger, so nothing in that game is going to even scratch me anymore."

'Unbelievable...' you thought, aghast at his words, 'How did he turn Erick's words of selflessness into something like this...?"

You almost wanted to slap him for a statement that deluded. You hadn't heard the full conversation, but you knew Erick's words were meant to have him reflect on his worth to Dante and himself rather whatever warped meaning he was getting out of it. It was like he was trying to come up with an excuse to justify staying in the game and by extension not dealing with his own repressed grief. Keeping a cool head, you replied in kind.

"So that's it then?" you ask, moving forward towards Chris, "just stay in the game and make your brother worry, all because you want project your grief with violence? This is just a way to cope Chris, it'll never be enough."

"Why not?" he replies, not moving an inch as you approach, "if I remember it, all of it, then it'll just be like school again, like the second mission in the room. What else can I fucking do Paula?!"

"How's about you don't act like an idiot Chris" Dante exclaims, earning a look from him, "you're not going to resolve anything by just running away. I know you still care about Haley, you've told me before."

Chris stopped his breathing as Dante continued, "We can just bring her back, get the points for both of you and get out of this damn place man! I know that-"

"Shut up..." Chris silently interrupted, before raising his weapon at both of you, "it can't be that simple, it never is with Gantz! How can anything be a guarantee with that thing?!"

You couldn't tell if this was bluff, as you'd seen Chris take on this wounded animal response before. But you weren't going to risk it.

You froze for a second, eyeing Chris slightly, before stating, "And will killing us do then Chris?! Just another notch on your feel-good belt? We're trying to help you damnit!"

"Oh yeah?!" Chris shouts, prepping to fire, "then answer me this Paula. If I bring her back, if I do that, will all of the memories go away?!"

"No, I can't promise you that" you answer honestly, looking Chris straight in the eyes, "but it will be a start. And we'll be there with you to help if it ever becomes too much to bear."

"Bullshit..." Chris replies, his fingers still on the triggers, "you're going to leave the moment when I need you the most, just like everyone else! Even if I don't die, there's no guarantee you two are going to still be here!"

"That's why we have to help each other Chris" Dante adds, trying to sound hopeful, "we all know there's no guarantees with Gantz, but we're not just gonna let that thing kill us in the missions. That's why we have to act as a team, for everyone as well as yourself."

"I don't care about them!" he spits back, but you hear a faint hiccup from him, "and they most certainly don't care about about me! So why should I-"

"Then think of us Chris!" you retort, making Chris flinch, "if it's only me, Dante and Erick, then so be it, but know that we're here to help you. With the game, your grief, the memories, everything that trouble you."

He didn't reply to that, in fact, he wasn't even speaking save the unsteady breathing from him. You could see faint shaking on his hand as he tried to keep the gun on both of you. He was wavering in his intent, but also dangerously close to pulling that the triggers as well. You needed to go in for the killing blow.

"The memories will never go away Chris" you start, earning a wary look from Dante, "but sharing them makes them so much easier to carry, much more than trying to bury them with corpses, because it'll never be enough."

Chris looked at the breaking point, his hand was barely grasping the weapon and his eyes were quivering with what you could see as regret.

Giving him the most sympathetic look you could must, you said, "Please, we know you don't want to do this. Put the gun do-"

That was as much as you could say, before a muzzle flash erupted in front of you. It wasn't from Chris's gun however, but from a uncloaking body behind him. Neither you, Dante or Chris had any time to react as another body dropped down from the tree-line, and quickly kicked the massive weapon from Chris's hands and pinned him to the ground. It all happened in the span of a second, but in the next few you were treated to the sight of Kurtis holding Chris down while Allie kept a pistol trained on him.

"Wasn't enough you disrespect the team" Kurtis growled, holding Chris's head as the suit's fluid leaked out of the buttons, "but now you threaten them with this shit? Traitors are dealt with swift where I come from kid, want Allie to do you the honors?"

Chris lets out an incoherent range of curses at Kurtis, but this only makes him hold him down harder. Nearby, your other teammates appear from the treeline, no doubt having heard the commotion. Still in shock from how quickly it happened, Dante moves towards Kurtis to try to get him off his brother, but Kurtis isn't budging.

"Kurtis let him go right now!" you command, shouting over the current commotion.

In spite of your shouts, he either doesn't hear you or isn't listening to you right now. He merely continues his struggle with Chris beneath him and Dante trying to pry him from his brother. Everyone else either watches or tries to follow your example in telling Kurtis to let go. Too many thing could go wrong in this scenario, and you try to account for any dangerous possibilities that may arise as quickly as you can.

"Tanjeet," you shout, getting his attention quick, "grab his weapon right now, and keep it close. There's no telling what he's gonna do if Dantes gets Kurtis off of him!"

Tanjeet quickly follows your command and runs towards the weapon. He quickly grabs it and pulls away from the current fray, staying near your side as you move forward to confront Kurtis. You don't stop shouting for him to let go of Chris, but it doesn't seem to deescalate the situation as Dante finally throws a Gantz suit infused punch at Kurtis's head.

Kurtis flinches for a second but still refuses to let go of Chris. By this point Allie is having trouble keeping a bead on him, and seems to be wavering herself. You're about to pull the apart yourself and prevent anymore of this nonsense, when a brush of wind near your hip zooms past you.

"She told you to let him go!" Yukino shouts, almost flying towards Kurtis with her own suit infused punch.

The strike hits Kurtis in the jaw and it causes him to flinch again for a moment. This time however, Dante takes the opportunity to deliver a heavy kick to Kurtis's abdomen, finally pushing him away from Chris. Dante quickly takes the opportunity to grab his own brother by the arms and pull him away from the struggle, kicking and screaming curse after death threat to Allie and Kurtis.

Kurtis gets up in seconds, but this time it's you that hold him back alongside Allie. He's not struggling too much, but you can tell he's going to activate his suit any moment.

"Take him and go Dante!" you shout, as Kurtis growls both of your grasps, "I'll get back home with the others, just take him home please!"

You don't hear a reply from Dante, but you can tell he's heading back to the plaza given the direction they're going. Once they're out of sight, you let go of the struggling Kurtis, who looks back at you with a look of surprise and disbelief.

"How could you let him go Paula?" he asks, and then looks at Allie, "and why didn't you shoot when you had the chance? That kid is too dangerous to be here with us, and tonight was proof of that!"

"He was going to let it go!", you shout back to him, "and you think it's a good idea to just off him like that?"

"I agreed to disable him Kurtis" Allie replies, looking saddened, "not kill him...what's with you all of a sudden?"

Kurtis doesn't reply, instead just giving you and Allie a look of disappointment, before heading back to the plaza.

'Goddamnit...we were so close...'

OOC: Alright, I'll archive this one in a second, so don't worry about it disappearing after Wednesday.

I'll start up the new thread next week on Monday at 6:00 PM EST with a similar amount of post as today.

Anyways, have a good evening /qst/, and again, sorry about about the flaky posting scheduling last Saturday.

Yeah...Chris is not going to take this one well. Best keep him far the fuck away from Allie and Kurtis in the next hunt.

Also, I didnt think Kurtis would have gone that far. First suggesting to kill that Persian dude in the museum, now this. Something's going on with him.
