/qst/ - Quests

Welcome to Starborn Quest, where one broken excuse for an ubermensch tries her damndest to get her girlfriend an eye back. How did our girlfriend lose said eye? Fighting against a Cannibal Priest of a Goddess our Deity hates.

In the past our technically immortal and barely functional protagonist Purps has fought against werewolves, a dragon, smugglers and reality warping impossibilities. This time however, she has found herself recruiting a motley possible to sneak into the Fae Wood where her friends were paralysed by a wyvern in order to rescue them / take revenge on a Dryad for talking mad shit.

As for this specific moment…

You stare at the whiteish barrier, focusing on the shimmering and shifting patterns that run across the magic dome that keeps you from trespassing upon Fae land. It would be tense and silent were it not for having to listen to Stellavarnious’ unique method of casting spells. Apparently, in lieu of chanting and waving their arms; harpies cast using their singing voices. Were it not a situation in which you were set to confront a haughty creature with a mindset so distinctly inhuman, you would enjoy the pleasant chorus reaching your ears. If you were in a good mood you might even sing with her and offer tips.

But this is no social gathering, this is a mission which your Sunsister and you must undertake. Were you not completely useless in the magical arts Stella would never have been told about your little crusade let alone be involved.

As your thoughts turn to the giant of a blonde by your side, you can’t help but glance over to her. She is tranquil, her armor makes no noise despite it’s tremendous weight and were you passing by she would appear as a statue. The greatsword she lays against the ground simply looking too ancient and noble to be a true weapon of war. Something about her presence reassures you; she is immovable and immutable in a way you have seen none rival and with her belief that Minerva dwells within you it is obvious that her loyalty is unbreakable.

So when the barrier recedes like a tide and bringing with it a painful silence; you do not hesitate in stepping forward. The woods are as alive as they were during your class, but this time there’s nothing this place can through at you; you’ve got your buzzsaw you’ve got Jo by your side and you’re laser focused on your task.

Without a word you and Jo both press on, pushing through bushes and small hanging vines in unison; a pair of irresistible forces moving through the forest in total sile- “SO where shall we find the dryad?” A voice says from above, Stella hanging from a branch and munching on what seems to be some kind of rodent she had hunted.

Wincing at the sudden shattering of the silence, you can't help but look around for unseen predators or ambushers making their move. This wood was dangerous during the daylight, and you don't know what the dark abyss between every broad trunked tree holds. "Well, can't you sense their magic? You could guide us right?"

"Yeah! I came because I sensed like, so much magic after I opened up the barrier. After some considerationies - I thought you might need a guide." Stella flutters down to stand on the ground, looking up from your hip, "And well, we're going the wrong way to the magic lake."

"Magic lake?" Jo echoes, shouldering her greatsword.

"Yes, but the dead tree is that way and there's also the place where all the breezes are coming from over thataway." She points West. "Plus I think there's some kind of cave or tunnel or something. When I was speaking the barrier she didn't really tell me much after I convinced her to let us in."

> [CURIOSITY] Wait, you spoke to the barrier? And it's a she?

You have to take a second and compose your words. Completely stumped to the degree that you raise your hand and let it fall before wlaking away and whirling back on your smaller friend. Even then you open and close your mouth twice, while Stella waits with all the patience of a princess at court, "Okay. You spoke to the barrier?"

"Yuh huh. She was quite antsy about it." She says, her head jerking around while she listens to the wind flowing around the branches.

"And it's a she?" You follow up, stealing a conspiratorial glance with Jo to reassure yourself this sounds as crazy to her as it does to you. "The barrier; which you spoke to is a she?"

"Yeah. She kind of feels motherly? Like, concerned at everything but comforting?" She shrugs, her wings unfurling. "But I eventually found the right song to convince her."

Again words fail you, leaving Jo to pick up the slack. "I don't think we've ever given you enough credit Stella-" The glare from the harpy is enough to force a correction, "Stellavarnious. Your magic is so weird I think we'd need to have Professor Lexington or the headmistress to understand you."

"Well, I don't blame you Jo; my Papa never could understand how I worked and he was a wizard." She tilts her head suddenly and you do notice a change in the wind as she does so. "The Woods are waking." She says cryptically.

"You mean the fae are coming?" Despite being here on diplomatic business, you can't help but put a hand onto your saw.

"I don't know. But the barrier said that suns at night will awaken the woods. You'd need a very strong druid to tell you more." It's funny how quickly she goes from airheaded to focused and without even asking permissions she perches herself on the shoulder of Jo's plate.

"The grass is moving. Back the way we came." Jo reports, moving to your side with her greatsword levelled. With the setting of the second sun the world has become tinged in the holy red of Octavius, giving the illusion that her blade has been long feasting upon blood. Despite the harpy perched on her shoulder curiously looking over her golden locks, she has set herself between you and whatever approaches; moving efficiently and with ease that unearths some of her true ability.

You have to take a step to the side to take your spot on her flank. Staring down the rippling and writhing grass with squinted eyes, trying to perceive whatever beast or monster approaches. Hundreds of tiny noises, like raindrops on the earth begin reaching your ears as you are greeted by the flutter of wings from a tiny female figure.

"Hi!" She says simply, the creature fluttering to stand atop a rock no higher than your foot. All around her the grasses still, with only the slight hint of movement being tiny tufts of hair peeking out from blades of grass.

"Greetings little one!" Stella responds, letting out some birdsong that begets a sharp toothed grin from your visitor.

"Your song is like the seeds of a banalp tree." The tiny thing says, her head bobbing from side to side in time with the flaps of her wings, "Rough, but holding such wonders."

Before things derail any further you feel the need to cut Stella's response off, "That's all well and good but, we're not really here to talk about singing."

Jo gives you a look of warning, but the creature does respond, "Oh yes. That's right. The suns come at night, spreading fear as they fight. With blade, ember and power; the land they shall sour. 'Til the woods lay crying and bare."

Stella's head turns in a rather inhuman avian way, "Wait, you want to hurt the woods?"

Your monotone is normally off putting and unsettling, but for once it feels appropriate under the sudden pressure of this tense situation. Countless heads have popped up amongst the grass, very feminine winged creatures and overtly masculine wingless ones alike challenging you with many tiny eyes. "We are only here for Cellahad and Xanadaar. I only wanted to hurt the woods when that dryad made me angry, now I just want to talk to her and sort this whole mess out."

The woods seemed to explode in noise as every one of the creatures piped up and began discussing what to do with the ones to either side; the staggering number of voices seeming to bounce around inside your skull as their strange language lingered in the air.

Jo and Stella are having some kind of hushed whispered conversation, both looking uncertain. Every so often Stella's head snaps up and chitters something at the leading sprite who addressed you. It's uncertain if she's discussing some kind of deal or if she's simply trying to press Jo for more information; but it seems you've reached some kind of impasse.

Kneeling down to look the thing in the eye, you try to give your practiced smile. Thankfully the little fae seems unable to discern the artifice of your expression, "Well, why don't we talk about something else for now?"

"Like what?" The thing says, narrowing its eyes at you. Stella chirps absentmindedly upon Jo's shoulder.

"Well, how did you know I was coming? You talked about me earlier."

"That's easy. The woods and barrier sing of you. Everyone heard the prophecy made by her ladyship." She sticks her tongue out. Seems like she's not a big fan of whoever the lady around these parts is.

"Well, how about that." You give Jo and Stella a look. "Some kind of oracle told them about me."

"Or the barrier." Stella says.

"Or the trees are watching."

"Or the wind is some kind of fae enchantment." You admit begrudgingly. "Well, little miss winged thing; anything you want to ask us before we continue?"

"Yeah, like why do warm you are?" The butchering of the sentence catches you off guard and the confusion seems to reach her, "I mean, why're you warm?"

Jo takes this chance to engage, "Well, the lady Minerva protects her and resides within her. So some of the Goddess' glory radiates from her."

"Wait, you worship the sun?" The thing seems amused.

"Yeah?" You both say.

"That's stupid." The thing says, literally picking its nose as it disrespects your faith.

"Well, I imagine having such a small brain ,makes things seem stupid." You sneer, "After all, how could you comprehend power and grace when you can't even comprehend your own insignificance."

"Hey! I'm not an insig-insignifisaint!" The thing protests, flying up to your head height and revealing rows upon rows of ragged and sawlike teeth coating the mouth of the creature.

"You're right." You admit, looking down your nose at the creature and it's muttering confidants. "You're just useless. After all, you don't know where my friends are."

Turning away you gesture to Jo to fall in, heading deeper into the woods. The fae behind you all seem to be furiously debating what to do. "It was not violent, but I still think we could have handled that better." Your blond companion says.

"Yeah, that was kinda mean. They only wanted to see who was in their home." Stella says, fluttering around above Jo's head. She seems content to try and scout your surroundings for now.

"Well, they were keeping us from our objective." You defend, rather lamely. "And worse, they were Fae. You never know when a fae is going to change its mind."

Walking through the woods, you try to keep your mind on the task. Checking for any tracks that might match the odd feet of Xanadaar or the huge oversized wolves that the dryad used to abduct your friends. But the ground is becoming slicker with mud as you traverse the woods, as if you are walking through some kind of rainstorm despite the dome that isolates this wood from the weather.

I takes you twenty minutes to decide you are getting nowhere and take a change of tact. Calling out to your companions, "Stella." The harpy circles around from her position at the van to hover in your eyeline, "Are we heading towards anything?"

"Stellavarnious," She corrects, "And not really. I felt like we were getting somewhere but then I was like we got turned around."

"That's impossible, we haven't deviated from our bearing." Jo protests, "We have headed steadily North."

"Wait, weren't we heading West?" You respond, "Minerva and Octavius went over the horizon ahead..."

Stella frowns, "You're both wrong, we came in from the West and moved toward the South East. So we were moving toward the middle." Suddenly she seems less confident, "Right?"

"I'm afraid we've fallen prey to illusion magic." You announce, pushing your back against Jo's. To her credit she does not question the move. Simply reading her greatsword and bringing her buckler across the chest in preparation. "Ideas?"

Jo's voice is calm, but you can feel the tension in her even without looking over your shoulder, "So long as we do not move they must come to us eventually. I am confident we can take any first strike and retaliate tenfold."

"The last time I was here we were ambushed by a Wyvern. The creatures here specialise in ambush." It is an unwelcome sense of deja vu, particularly given the idea of spines being launched at your rather bare midriff. "Stella, thoughts?"

"About what?" Stella says from above, perching in a tree.

"What to do about the illusion magic. Can you dispel it?" Despite the change in conversation, your eyes have not left the surrounding treeline, were it possible for your ears to physically flex - they would under the strain.

"Dispel?" She seems to be mentally processing something. "Nope, don't know that one. It's weird but I also don't hear the spiritsong either."

"The Spiritsong?" Jo parrots oddly.

"Y'know. The spirits. Trees, the grass, all those things. They're not singing." Stella doesn't seem to realise the implications of her own comments.

"So you spoke to the barrier, like one of these spirits? Wait, that means that your magic is druidic; where on Munis did you lear-"

"Girls, focus." You snap with the biting tone of command. "We're mid ambush here."

"Sorry." They both murmur focusing up.

The saw at your waist becomes two small tubes on the back of your wrists. On another day you would question the use of this strange new form, but instead you retain your focus, calling out, "We are aware of your antics Illusionist. Come face us or at least release us. We have no quarrel with you."

"And what if I quarrel with you Purple Flame?" A voice throoms from around you all, like rolling thunder purring. "You who fight the wood. You who burn the earth. You who would mock the little ones."

Stella's head cocks to the side with each word. As if she were having a separate discussion with Jo. The blond has not moved from her defensible stance, which makes the Harpy's wandering all the more frustrating.

"The deep roots recall you. They forget not a butcher of their kin." The voice seems mournful now, despite it's accusations. "A killer. Yes, purple flame. A killer in truth. You come with words of peace yet hands of blood. This is my garden and you are a pest."

Jo speaks up, "We did not mean to trespass. Nor did we kill any Fae. My Sunsister has fought a Wyvern but she did not slay it."

"Blood is blood. Dead is dead. Whether old corpses or fresh blood, a debt is debt." The voice harrumphs.

"Purps hurt some of your people in the past?" Stella says sadly, walking forward and away from you to a portion of the wood. "I had no idea. But, she's a good person. It must have been a mistake."

Despite the charges, you simply square your shoulders and challenge the forest around you, "You have prothesised my wrath and provoked me at every turn. I just want my friends."

"I am aware child of fire. Humans are creatures of flightful desire. But Starborn?" Something feels different, an alien presence in your mind that you couldn't quite nail down receding. Before you stands a nine and a half foot tree, with a pair of trunks serving as legs and countless thick boughs. In one of them it has some kind of ancient broad staff fused to what this creature would use as a hand. This type of fae seems, familiar. "Starborn are purpose and objective made flesh. The balance and such things beyond your goals do not phase you."

"That is not what I expected." Jo says, trying to interject between you both. "It is too small to be a treeman or treant."

"Barker." Stellavarnious says pompously, hopping and fluttering to stand in front of him. "You're really old."

"I have seen more winters than the mountains hatchling." He confirms, a bough reaching down to Stella. Your mouth is open in warning, but it is needless. Like a pigeon and a standard tree, she simply hops onto the bough and up into his upper branches to explore happily. "But even I recognise a boon. The fire and death you bring, need not be hostile. The balance requires death and life to be in accord."

"Yes, which is why the Fae hate me. I am not of the balance" You spit the words.

"But you can uphold it." The barker corrects, swinging his arms to point with his thorned staff. "Yonder is the mother of our lady. Zar-Tan of No Clan contained her. I would have you slay her with your fire."

"And why would we do that?" Jo says, taking the words from your mouth.

"She is a warped and dark thing. An infernal Fae. Some devil's taint touched her, requiring the effort of many to resist her. Should you slay her, you will prevent a future catastrophe."
