Previous threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=One%20Piece%20Bounty%20Photographer%20Quest
Cover-art kindly provided by a player. Look upon our prettyboy protagonist. Look upon his devilish smile and despair.

In last thread’s episode of M.A.R.I.N.E.s, our hero ENSIGN HARRY FLASHMAN settled into Loguetown by means of eating (strawberry) ice cream, outsmarting Captain Kidd (not hard), and completing his (totally sweet) tattoo. He also gained a fan club consisting of fans. Fans on chains. With blades. They are his children now. We also had a brief glimpse into his potential future as Sogeking’s nemesis in a thrilling battle of stupidity and more stupidity.

We now return you to your scheduled idiocy.

>BIG SIS SOCIALIZING~

It’s a rare time that you spend with Tashigi off-base, because... well, you both live there, train there, and in Tashigi’s case, work there. For once though, Tashigi has allowed herself time off, which you’ve promptly co-opted to drag her to a pub.

You have excellent taste.

“This looks... interesting,” Tashigi says carefully, nursing her cocktail. It’s pink and purple, with a tiny umbrella, and sugar frosted around the rim of the glass. You kind of wish you’d ordered one.

“Screw interesting, it’s happy hour,” you bluntly reply, sipping your own

“So - it’s come to my attention that we don’t know much about each other. Tashigi!” You manage to change a finger-gun into a simple finger-jab. “Tell me something interesting about yourself!”

“U-um? Interesting? About me?”

“Right! Come on, hit me with something amazing!”

Tashigi visibly panics a little, hands tightening on her glass. “I - I don’t know! I’m really boring!”

You snort. “Everyone has something interesting about them.”

“Then you start!” Tashigi swallows a sips from her straw, eyes narrowing at you. “Tell me something about yourself I don’t know.”

“Well - Sure. Fine! I...” You try to think of something interesting about yourself.

>SWORDU~

“You’re not entirely shit at Marine Standard,” Klaus tells you, which you translate as high praise, so you preen a little. “Unfortunately, Marine Standard is trash.” ... oh.

“Then why did you teach it to me?!”

Klaus shrugs. “Funsies, I guess.”

One day. One day, you will stab him.

“Aaaaanyway,” he drawls, tapping his fingers languidly against his hip-flask, “while you haven’t actually mastered the style yet, I think it’s better if we start you off on a new style that you can add to it. Cover some of the weaknesses, or give you something new if Marine Standard is a bad match-up against your opponent, you get me?”

“Unfortunately,” you mutter, although honestly, a new style sounds kind of cool. “What kind of style were you thinking of?”

“That depends. Got any preferences yourself?”

You look Tashigi in the eyes, and tell her (as dramatically as possible), “i have no idea who my parents were, except that my mom was apparently really hot, and my father owned a compass. Until she stole it.”

“Uh.” Tashigi pauses drinking. “What?”

To provide evidence, you reach into your jacket pocket and pull it out - the pocket compass that was left with you when your mother dumped you at the orphanage and vanished with only the briefest of explanations.

“See?” You hold it out so Tashigi can see it - silver-plated, carefully-polished, The Marine insignia engraved on the front, you pop it open, showing the compass inside, and opposite it, on the inside of the lid, another small engraving; ‘To R, with pride. S.’

“I guess he was a Marine, by the front of it,” you say, shrugging as you put it back into your pocket, carefully as you can.

Tashigi looks torn between horror and pity. “And your mother-? I mean, I’m not judging, but...”

“Apparently she was pretty young? Old enough for a one-night stand, from what the orphanage staff said, but I guess she didn’t get his name, and you can’t track a guy down just by something like this. He probably didn’t even realize he left it.” You shrug again, feeling a little depressed all of a sudden, and take another sip of delicious Pink Flamingo. “Anyway, that’s pretty much it for interesting facts about me. My life’s been really boring. You?”

“... I like swords?”

“...... Wow. I need to get you outside more.”

>sneaky swordy

“Something deceptive, and misleading!” You’re already highly offensive, and not just in mannerisms. Besides, if you really need to defend, you can just run away. You’re a photographer, not a combat guy.

“Something sneaky, huh...” Klaus rubs his stubbled chin in thought. “All right, I got an idea, prettyboy. You ever heard of Pouncing Racoon Style?”

“... No?”

“So no opinion on it?”

“It sounds dumb?”

“Perfect fit for you, then!” Klaus beams, the most sarcastic smile you’ve ever seen, and reaches out to pay your shoulder, despite your best attempts to avoid it. “I’ll start teaching it tomorrow. Oh, and and there’s technique that really adds to it - you ever heard of Kami-e?”

“Nooooooo?”

“Ha. Poor you. See you tomorrow, prettyboy.”

You suspect that tomorrow is going to hurt. Lots.

Jitte AKA the least lethal weapon we have.

>>
>>3313645
Let her choose, of course. See what speaks to her the most.
>>
>>3313651
Oh whoops I forgot our fans were rare weapons.
Okay 1d4 for cutlass / katana / jitte / pistol then.

>>
>>3313645
Yeah let her choose
>>
>>3313645
I'd say pistols or jitte.
Pistols because they're ranged, and ideally we want her as far away from danger as possible. Jitte, because it's mostly non-lethal, and good for defense an disarmin.

>sort of a let Mina choose/jitte split, but she would have picked jitte anyway because of Smoker

One day, you take Mina to the only place more fun and wondrous than the ice cream shop.

The training grounds.

Your original wooden jitte is clasped in her hands, a new hilt attached due to the old one being put on your real jitte. She stares up at you with a face filled with determination, despite the jitte being... way too big for her.

"Are you sure you don't want to learn the cutlass? Swords are cool too!"

She shakes her head furiously. "No, I wanna use the jitte! You and Smoker-san both think it's good, right?"

"Oh, definitely." You heft your own jitte, watching Mina copies you. Eh, she'll grow into it. Maybe. "Now, I'll help position you and then show you some moves, okay? Then you try."

You show her hoe to properly hold the jitte, then slowly run through a basic series of strikes and blocks. Simple enough for even a child, right?

>Dat Nat

You don't quite get the shit beaten out of you by a child, but only because you stop holding back so much after the first hit.

WHAT THE HELL DOES MINA DO ALL DAY?! Does paperwork make you really good at weaponry? Crap, you're pretty good at it yourself, that might explain it...

Parry-lunge-STAB-getblocked-disengage-stepin-restrainyourstrength(you're not an asshole, after all)-parry-dodge-lungelunglu-wait,no,block-

"You're doing really well!" You're just glad you upped your game at the first chance. If you'd let her first strike hit, you'd have been bowled over and losing your lunch, which isn't a good way to win a kid's respect.

You have a horrible feeling that if she had more strength and speed, you'd be fucked.

... More jitte training is needed! You can't get your ass beaten by a ten year old!

Fortunately, her stamina is lacking, and yours has greatly improved; after a few minutes, you slow down as she falls back, looking exhausted.

(Mina is now a jitte prodigy and has got a massive boost to jitte skill wtf)
(+2 to Combat Teaching)

"That was... seriously good," you encourage her, as she pants for breath. "Weirdly so, actually."

You glance around to the appreciative noises from the peanut gallery who'd decided to stop their own training, and - Oh.

There's bossman, lurking at the back of the crowd. Two cigars in his mouth, and eyes latched onto Mina, grinning like she's a winning lottery ticket.

>world's best boss receives world's best jitte-girl

"Boss," you say, still looking at him as you point at Mina. "I bring you a gift." Then, as Mina giggles, and the assorted infantry panic at the realization their boss is there, you wrap an arm around her, effortlessly hoisting her onto your shoulders. "I can see it now! Captain Mina! Scourge of all the sea's pirates!"

Mina laughs breathlessly, hands clenching in your hair, while Smoker's eyes narrow, grin curving into a delighted smirk as a tangled plume of smoke drifts from his cigars.

"That... sounds interesting," he allows, striding forwards and looking (not too far) up at Mina. "You want to learn the jitte properly, kid?"

Rather than speaking, her hands tighten in your hair, though you can't see what face she makes. You feel her nod, chin brushing the top of your head.

"All right. We'll start getting you fit enough, and sort out a proper-sized jitte. You'll have to take this seriously, I don't waste time with slackers."

You feel her nod more frantically. "I will!"

"All right, then." Smoker nods at her, then down at you. "Don't think you'll be avoiding training either, best. I can teach two just as easy as one."

"I believe in your capability to be as terrifying as possible," you inform him, solemn.

This is top-tier. Particularly the shirtless w/ jacket cape look. Not only does it show off the dragon, it gives off that Smoker feel. We just need a cigar. Only complaint is that Flashman has only one weapon and it looks like only one arm. Unless we go full Shanks mode and protect Mina from a Sea King, which I am 100% for. That one-armed shit gives style points like nobody's business.

Thanks for tallies, guys, it’s an extra +2 for general fitness due to 3 slots of extreme physical exercise. Jitte training will now be slowing down. Also, because I don’t think I described it, Pouncing Raccoon is about fancy, misdirecting footwork and angling your body (and blade) so it looks like you’re falling back or aiming at a different target, before suddenly redirecting your movement/strike. As you get better with it, you’ll be able to adapt it to the jitte as well.

Special attacks, huh? I have... zero talent in coming up with those. If you guys want give some ideas, I can work out a rough idea of the skill levels you need for them, and how long you need to train before you’re capable of using them in combat.

For example, you can do basic Kami-e right now, but not very well in spars and not at all in actual combat. When you get to 5/5, you can start doing it in combat with basic confidence and proficiency. (And it will level up until you can do it in rapid succession throughout an entire fight, if you train it enough.)

Also guys, your fan training is going to to slow down a lot after this week, but on the bright side, your dual-wielding will soon level up to an. Ambidextrous trait, and you won’t have to ever worry about maluses for dual-wielding. Also, you’ll be ambidextrous. So that’s pretty cool.

Pretty happy we're managed to get sword and jitte down to +0, and fans looks like its on its way to +0 too. Looks like the only way to improve further is by battling.

Also during the daily arc we need to get those final two points into Kami-e so we can use it in battle. With Luffy round the corner it's only fitting.

Sleep Is for the weeeeak And the mentally stable.

I'm serious about these special attacks OP, we're TOTALLY a lackluster swordsmen If we aren't shouting ridiculous names for sword attacks that shouldn't be possible.

Thank you for giving us the go ahead on special attacks, I'll throw out a few here In a minute.

By the way, Is there any chance of going full ass-pull shonen If we roll high enough? (As In here, have a special move you created but didn't finish training revealed dramatically because of combat stresses and crits)

Also, How will combat work exactly? In the case of dual-wielding Cut-chan and Kata-san do we combine Sword+Dual-wield+Style bonuses+ (( Other )) bonuses or penalties based on things like circumstance or haki, and roll? And If we do get special moves, will they also factor In as a bonus towards the roll depending on how appropriate It Is for the scenario?

It's a lot to ask, but I'm curious. Thanks BPQM. (P.S. also nice to know we get Perks as we go, cool to see notable improvements outside of raw numbers, hoping to see more of them.)

Meanwhile in Marineford

"And finished" after a quick sigh a lone marine places his finished documentation of the latest recruits from marineford.

"Honestly recording all this personal information is a nightmare, well at least I'm finally done." Taking one final cursory glance at the finished document the marine grimaces after realizing the poor sod has to deal with Captain Smoker

"I don't envy Ensign Flashman right now... then again i imagine smoker is less of an ass than the slave driver that is Sandra. I mean seriously the entire office slacks off while I'm on vacation and a week into returning i have a mountain of work then have to take a week off due to illness and its my fault the others haven't done anything."

Suddenly a loud Shrill voice screams out "BOB ARE THOSE GOD DAMNED PAPERS DONE YET IF SO GET THEM SENT OFF OR SO HELP ME I'LL GIVE YOU A DRESSING DOWN THAT WOULD MAKE SENGOKU BLUSH!"

'You know what maybe i should do the mail guys a favor and go deliver these before my day gets any worse'

If peopl want to vote on what to get/say to Clara, feel free, I’ll write a daily scene up for it. If it’s a bouquet or something, specific flowers or a picture would be good, otherwise I’ll just go with what I think Flashman would get. (Hint; it’d be flashy.)

>>3317277
>bullshit shonen
Yes, I love this dramatic animu shit. If you’re in a seriously tight spot, I will likely allow a roll for something suitable such as the completion of a half-trained technique, a final last wind of One Piece-style willpower, etc. If you screw up that roll, then you’re boned.

>dual wielding
The dual wielding skill is really more about getting rid of the maluses (opposite of bonuses if anyone isn’t aware). If you hadn just picked up two swords and tried dual-wielding right at the start, you’d get a big minus on training due to the difficulty. Because you’ve been training to dual wield different types of weapons (eg, two swords, a sword and jitte, two fans, etc), you’re going to Mabidextrous soon which will completely negate all dual wielding penalties, even if you pick up a couple of weapons you’re completely unfamiliar with.

Thus, in combat you’ll just be going off your skill for the weapon used, with varying DCs based on you’re opponent/terrain/etc. Some opponents might just need a 20 to beat them. Others might need a 80. As for Haki, you can’t control that yet so I’ll just be rolling to see whether it kicks in by accident. When you CAN control it, you’ll get an extra bonus.

Not sure about special moves, I would suppose it would vary based on what the move actually is. You’ll likely only be using special moves in special circumstances (hence the name!) so it would probably be an extra roll for each time you perform such s move.

>>3317282

All right, that’s confirmed as Navigation, Stabby Things and Fans. You also get a +1 to general fitness due to two slots of strenuous training. Kami-e is now at 4/5, dual wielding is at 27 (30 makes you ambidextrous), and fans, jitte and swords have all slowed down by now. Pouncing Raccoon Style gives you a +10 bonus to swords though, so they remain your most badass weaponry.

It’s not like you don’t do your job as much as possible. Well, quite a bit, anyway. Sometimes. The problem is that bossman, Tashigi and their crew are REALLY damn good at their own jobs. There’s been a couple of times you’ve trotted back to base with some new photographs, only, for the office staff to admit that Smoker just kicked all 5eir asses and arrested them five minutes ago.

It’s awkward.

Tashigi buys you ice cream in apology every time that happens, though, so it’s not all bad.

That said, you have managed to get quite a few actually useful pictures, and it shoots a thrill of pride every time you look at a new local bounty poster, and see your own work there.

... Until the boss arrests them a day later, but still.

....... This might be why no-one complains when you spend your time training or doing Smoker’s paperwork instead. Along with the fact that less paperwork gets burned.

Wait. Are you a secretary?

STOP. GO BACK. Right, photographs. Once you’ve staggered to the showers and cleaned yourself of dirt and PAIN, you dress yourself in the uniform of JUSTICE and fetch your camera of DUTY.

Screw this ‘getting beaten up’ stuff.

>>3317288
Santoryu's a style though, but yeah It'd be flashy as fuck to steal copycat Zoro mid-fight.

Also here's a couple special move ideas of varying levels of bullshit.

>Preparation!
Assume a wide stance and overdrive your senses. When In the stance, gain a bonus to counter the next attack or a bonus to using a special move, whichever comes first. Disorienting to use repeatedly.

>Windmill!
Leaping Into the air, hold both blades In a vertical stance and front-flip rapidly to build momentum and crash Into your opponent. Can be used as a falling blade strike, or a feint for a cross-slash attack upon landing.

>Carousel!
Rotating rapidly, Flashman becomes a whirlwind of steel maintaining the spin even as he moves. Building momentum Increases the power of the technique, and stopping the technique abruptly allows for a sudden release of furious momentum from a different angle of attack.

>Whiner!
Flashman dramatically plays up an injury In true cry-baby fashion (Bullshitting roll), provoking his opponent to try and finish him off or lower their guard out of sympathy (or disappointment). Flashman jumps on the opportunity when the time Is right, exploiting the enemies misstep to land a decisive blow. Hard to watch.

>Billiards!
>Dual wielding a blade and a pistol, fire your gun rapidly while deflecting the bullets with your sword as they leave the barrel, sending various shots In unpredictable and lethal trajectories- more so If you aim to further ricochet them.
>>

We are Zoro's future kid though, might as well show him that we're a chip off the old block.

Also all these spinning styles (windmill, carousel) are super Sanji-esque, and I approve them because clearly Flashman is taking after Sanji in some fashion too. Bonus point if he screams them out in another language.

OH NO IT’S THE MARKETS

>>3317357
You’ve got six more days, you’ll have time to lurk like a really weird bat.

>working hard and not browsing the stalls at all i swear

To market, to market, to photograph a pirate. Base again, base again... crap, what rhymes with pirate? Meh, you’ll work on that later.

For now, you head towards the market! Home of everything a pirate needs to resupply their ship! Well, food-wise, at least, along with assorted other necessities. It’s not quite the place to buy spare rigging, but still.

Market reached, you prepare yourself for IMMINENT PHOTO-TAKING. Your eyes scan the assembled crowds of shoppers for anyone with weaponry via or a distinctly ‘yo-ho-ho’-ish sort of look. Your feet prowl the cobbled streets... like a panther! A panther wearing combat boots! Your mouth chews ferociously (but neatly) on an apple you buy because dammit, you’re hungry.

Getting beaten up by hobos is exhausting work.

“Ah, to be young again,” the fruit-seller sighs, as he hands over your change. “You know, I used to be a Marine like you, before I took a bullet to the knee.”

Mouth too full to respond, you nearly finger-gun at him, before realizing that might be insensitive and traumatic, and decide to give him a thumbs up instead.

You hope he doesn’t think you’re approving of him getting shot.

Gotta be honest, this is going to be pretty much useless with Observation Haki coming up. While overdriving your regular senses sounds good and is very possible, I don’t think it would count as a special move. This is workable, but not spectacular.

>Windmill!
Also possible, but your fitness has thus far focused on regular strength/speed/stamina. I’d recommend some kind of acrobatic/flexibility training before you can pull this off, although kami-e will help once it’s good enough.

>Carousel!
Very possible, you can even start training in this right now! Thanks to your fans, you’re actually pretty good at dealing with spinning without getting dizzy, while still keeping track of your target (as long as it’s stationary).

>Whiner!
Truly the greatest of moves. Klaus is simultaneously ashamed and impressed, and names this new emotion ‘imshamed’.

As a Marine, even a photographer , your natural duty is toward justice. You’re not quite sure what kind of justice (although lazy justice always sounded kinda cool), but definitely some sort.

Which is why, when you see some guy yank a woman’s bag off her shoulder and run for it, You Know What You Must Do.

With that kind of passion, you can’t lose.

Even as he throws himself down a side street, you dart out of the path of an oncoming crepe-cart (mmm, crepes), angling yourself to swing around the corner with only a millimeter between you and the wall.

I'm the exact opposite, a logia would be cool but I've always found most zoan to be really boring. Maybe if it was a mythical zoan I'd be for it. It's not really about how strong the fruit is, it's just things like wax control, a rubber body, being able to turn into and control smoke/sand/literal shadow/etc, etc, sounds a lot more interesting compared to what is essentially the power to be a furry.

You COULD train kami-e on your own, but because having a teacher who can call you out when you screw up does, sadly, speed things up, you hunt down Klaus.

He turns out to be in the mess, scamming free meals he isn’t entitled to.

... why does bossman let him wander around here, again?

Anyway. You hover over his shoulders while he sloooowly spoons a mouthful of jello into his gaping maw.

“Train me.”

“Did that. Did I beat your head so hard you got amnesia?”

“No, but train me more! I want to learn kami-e.”

“Hmmm.” He chews on the jello, despite it being jello, and thus not for chewing. “You reeeeeally want extra lessons, prettyboy?”

“Just today! I mean, what else did you have planned? Going to find a cleaner’s supply closet to nap in?”

Klaus’ eyes suddenly look worryingly shifty.

“... Were you actually gonna-?”

“Done here, let’s go!”

—-

An hour later, you’re surprisingly not beaten into the ground, because you’ve managed to successfully let your body drift and flow around Klaus’ (admittedly slowed-down) strikes, wearing you out but leaving you untouched.

(Kami-e at 5/5! Now turned to D-rank technique!)

“Don’t use it too often, you’re still wasting too much energy,” Klaus tells you between yawns, once he declared you ‘acceptable’. “But yeah, you can use it in a real fight now. Try not to fuck it up and die.”

All right, I'll write up training post tomorrow, have to sleep now. You were at 6 for pistols, you've got 10 now. Doubt you'll make it to 25 by next week, unless you train all day for the week, but oh well.

I think nat100 anon still has his bonus if he wants to use it to boost pistol gain for a while, but will probably be more useful to save it.

It would actually be pretty funny if we pushed bullshitting, legalities, and navigation into the mid 20's to 30's and Flashman was actually extremely good at his officer work. It would definitely surprise the people that know him. At the same time, the other marine that know him purely by his work would think he's some super efficient officer running things smoother than most of the higher ranked, more experienced brass have in their own bases.

Good news, everyone! I’m an idiot! So yes, you were at 12, which means you rolled a 99 including the bonus, so you actually gain 5 points instead of 4 due to near critting.

>99 including bonus dammit i cannot into math

If there’s anything changing down a purse-thief through a crowded market has taught you, it’s that ranged options are important. And also that floral handbags aren’t your style. Very convenient though, the relieved woman gave you a snack from it. You can’t believe you’ve been missing out on such incredible snack-carrying capabilities.

To think you thought they were just for lipstick...

In any case, you find yourself back at base, drawing some absolutely brilliant pictures of Klaus. Here’s regular hobo-Klaus. Here’s him with a Gold Rogers’ moustach. Now another dressed as a bandit. Now another regular Klaus, but with a ‘SHOOT ME, I’M A DICK’ speech bubble.

Genius.

You proudly hang your masterworks from the pegs in the firing range, and -

Promptly proceed to do pretty damn well.

Sure, they’re stationary, but you go from ‘hitting more often than not’ to actually managing to hit precise areas. Straight through the eye! Straight through the forehead! Straight through - okay, these are pretty much scraps now.

(Pistols now at +17.)

>90 + 17 = 107

You quickly sketch up a few more stunning pictures, amazed by your artistic prowess. Why take photos? Maybe you should just sketch your targets instead? As a bonus, you could draw them in stupid poses for shits and giggles.

Oh, right, you’re supposed to be training.

Artworks hung, this time attached to a zip line thats shoots them from one side of the range to another, you -

Blast the absolute crap out of them.

Huh.

You stare down at your pistol, which teams up st you, like a smug hunk of metal going ‘See? I can be useful too! You abandoning bastard! Pay me alimony.’ Or something.

“Not bad,” you praise yourself, then try to spin it around your finger by the trigger-guard. That doesn’t work out so hot, but you manage to avoid shooting yourself, so it’s all good.

(+4 to pistols. Gains are smaller this time because you started from a higher skill than last time.)

Screw it. It’s time to use the Tashigi-signal! By which you mean it’s time to use your Den-Den and call her.

“Hi, Flashman!” She picks up pretty fact, voice chirpy. “What do you need?”

>when in doubt, stalk via coworkers

After thanking Tashigi (but not to the level of needing to buy her flowers or a sword), you stealth it up to the tattoo parlor, like an assassin, but without the killing people part. Unless they’re criminals. Actually, you’re like a secret agent, on a top-secret mission to gather intelligence! Perfect!

You peek in through the window, then the door, seeing one of the staff drawing up a design. It doesn’t look like Clara herself is here at the moment, either not on shift, or out back in the staff-room.

Now... you will become as unto a ninja.

Lowl, or whatever his name is, looks at you as you cunningly sneak in. “Why are you moving so weirdly?”

“Stealth,” you whisper, looking around rapidly. “Shhhhh.”

“... Should I press my panic button?”

“No! I’m a Marine! You know me! And I’m also not here.” You tiptoe closer, with all the subtlety of a dead rhinoceros in someone’s living room. “I need to buy Clara a thank you gift. Give me ideas.”

“... Flowers?”

“Wow. Everyone sucks today.”

Lowl sighs, putting his pen down and rubbing his forehead. “Dude, we’re coworkers. We don’t even work the same shift all that often, and when we do, it’s because we’re run off our feet and don’t have time to talk.”

“So... you admit you suck?”

He fixes you with A Look. “No. Look, I know there’s these candies she really likes? I mean, it’s not a big thing, but she hasn’t been able to get them for a while. I guess if you could find some for her, she’d be pretty happy.”

This sounds promising. “Great! Where does she normally get them from?”

“Li’l Sugar’s Candy Shop, over on Milk Street. The candy’s called honey-gems,” he grumbles, going back to his drawing. “Now please go arrest people or something.”

You spin on your heel to leave, reconsider, and spin back. "... D'you want anything while I'm there?"

Lowl stares. “... Bag of chocolate drops.”

You finger-gun at him. “Good choice!” Wait, you’re being sneaky! You don’t have any finger-gun silencers, unfortunately, but you whisper “Good choice!” quieter, scuttling backwards towards the door.

Lowl slowly waves at you as you leave, bell jangling above the door.

IT’S CANDY TIME, DIABETES-HAVERS.

Milk Street isn’t too far away, the candy shop nice and obvious. You bust in, scattering a trio of children, and saunter over to the counter.

“Store-keep! A bag of your finest chocolate drops!”

“Heya, Flashy,” Polkin says cheerily, moving to weigh out the drops from a jar behind him. “Your usual as well?”

“Not today, I’m sort-of working.”

“Really?” Why does he sound so disbelieving?

“Yes, really! This is payment for an incredibly cheap informant. With a sweet-tooth.”

“Huh.”

“... Actually, get me my usual as well.”

Polkins nods, bagging those up too.

“Aside from that,” you go on, leaning across the counter to avoid touching those sticky children, “I gotta know. Apparently you’re out of stock of ‘honey-gems.’ You know where I could get some?”

Polkins whistles low and long. “Oh mean, honey-gems... sorry, Flashy, you’re not gonna get any of those for a while.”

“Seriously? Why not?”

He looks you in the eye, face distraught. “Because the supply ship bringing the most recent order in was captured... by pirates.”

... Dear, sweet sea gods. Pirates stole your candy.

“Pirates?! Which crew?!” This is the worst thing you have ever heard, in the history of ‘ever’.

“Don’t bother,” Polkins sighs, serving a small girl a bag of fluorescent powder. You’re pretty sure it’s sherbet and not drugs. “Apparently it’s some rookie crew trying to get in big with one of the Pirate Emperors. Something about them liking candy, so they’re stealing ones from the Blues that you can’t get on the Grand Line. Good thing most of my delivery came in on a different merchant fleet.”

You clench your fists, struck by the audacity of these worthless scum. What kind of degenerate snatches candy from the mouths of starving tattoo-artists?!

“Just tell me their name,” you vow. “That Emperor hasn’t put them under protection yet, right?”

“Not that I know of,” he admits. “Well - they call themselves the Meowka Crew, and they’remstill hanging around in the sea around Loguetown, but that’s all I know. Trying to hit more merchants, I guess.”

“Your honey-gems will be avenged!”

“Uh, thanks? I mean, the delivery was insured-“

“I must go!” You fling the beri down on the counter, snatching up the bags of sweet, sweet sugar. “If I die, remember me!”

“That’s, uh, not really neccess-“

You flee the store, JUSTICE empowering your stride. After a quick detour to drop off Lowl’s payment, you head to

You beat feet back to HQ, filled with a burning fury. And also candy.

“BOSSMAN,” you politely announce yourself, as you throw his office door open and hurl yourself in. “TERRIBLE NEWS! That you probably know about.”

“... That doesn’t sound like news.” The Captain is clearly hard at work, lounging back in his chair, boots up on the desk. It’s only a one-cigar day, apparently.

“Well, it’s news to me!” You kick the door shut behind you, bouncing over. “Have you heard of this crew called the Meowka Pirates?”

“Yeah. Just took ‘em out this morning.”

... Oh. “Interesting. Did they, uh, hypothetically speaking, that is to say, um, theoretically. Um. ... Hmm.”

Smoboss looks at you, one eyebrow slowly raising. “Did you have a stroke, brat?”

“... Did you sink their ship?”

“That wasn’t a no, but I’ll assume you’re all right. And no, it’s still afloat. Probably gonna be auctioned off soon. Why?”

“Aaaaand.... what about the stuff on it? That they stole? Hypothetically speaking?”

“If we can trace the owners, they’ll get it back. Otherwise, auctioned off as well. Why?”

You lean in, palms pressing against his desk. “I need to get someone a thank-you gift. Apparently their favorite candy is on that ship, and non-where else in Loguetown.” You look him in the eyes. “Boss. I need that candy.”

Smoker stares back, face blank. “That is, bar none, the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard you say, kid.”

“I can say weirder?”

“Please don’t.” He sighs, then reaches for another’s cigar. You’ve made it a two cigar day. Oops? “You can go check if the stuff you want is there, then get in contact with the owner and see if they’ll let you buy it. Dumbass.”

“YOU’RE THE BEST, SMOBOSS~!!” Then yuu give him a blinding grin and finger-guns as he facepalms. “Hey, do you want anything? Candy that tastes like cigars? Candy shaped like cigars? Candy that you literally smoke?”

“I don’t think that’s poss-“

“I’ll-keep-an-eye-out-i’m-taking-Mina-and-Tashigi-with-me-bye!”

“Wait, wha-“

Door flung open, you proceed to escape with all due haste, leaving a confused secretary in your wake.

You manage to fumble your Den-Den out, even as you rush towards the paperwork departmental offices, and call Tashigi.

“Hey, Fla-“

“NO TIME! MEET ME AT THE DOCKS!!”

You hang up, proud to have got your message across, and slam into the offices. “MINA!!”

She peeks up from collating some files, the other staff pausing to watch. “Um... yes?”

“DROP WHAT YOU’RE DOING! There’s a candy emergency at the docks!”

“A... candy...?”

“NO TIME TO EXPLAIN!” You swing her over your shoulders, paperwork swirling in her wake, and run. RUN, to the docks!

Damn, you’re rocking this ‘thank you gift’ thing.

Ignoring the cheering child on your shoulders (apparently bring carried at speed is fun), you make it to the docks in record time, spotting Tashigi already waiting by the entrance, worried face and hand on her sword.

“You made it already! Good!”

“Flashman, what’s the problem? And why are you carrying Mina?”

“Hi, Ta-san!” Mina waves happily from her regal position.

I can understand that, but how boring would it be if all we did was take pictures of the action happening, rather than being *in* on it? Would that really be any different than just following actual canon events as they happened, just with some weirdo snapping pictures in the background and probably dying very quickly?
>>
>srs bizness

“Important survey of the Meowka’s cargo,” you announce. You are a professional. Honest.

Tashigi frowns. “Isn’t that the surveyor’s job? I mean -”

“Captain’s orders!”

“Oh! Well, all right then.” She adjusts her glasses, obviously relieved. “Shall we go?”

“Let’s!”

You step to her side, walking together into the docks and towards where the Meowka’s ship languishes. “By the way,” Tashigi adds, “why ARE you here, Mina?”

Mina looks down at you. “Um. School trip?”

You nod furiously. Tashigi stares between you in disbelief. “Okay...”

The Meowka’s ship is easily seen. Its prow is a giant metal... cat... thing. Like a robot, but more stupid. More importantly, it seems obviously reasonably undamaged, so hopefully the cargo is in good shape.

Tashigi fetches notebooks and pens from the terrible dock-dude you’d once semi-interrogated, while you quickly give Mina some instructions; simple things like, ‘don’t tell Tashigi we’re really looking for candy’, and ‘tell me if you spot any that look like cigars’.

Pretty soon, your fellow Ensign returns, beaming with pride in her valiant duties. “All right,” she says, giving you your own writing equipment. “Are we going to split, or go together?

Thing is, I started reading because the premise was unique and interesting. Now you could just call this One Piece Marine Quest and nothing would change. And a vast majority of the actions taken recently have been about power leveling Flash's combat skill. It just feels samey when compared to most other shonen fan-fic quests. I still like Flash as a character though.

“Let’s stick together! Mina can learn from both of us how to properly collate information on a pirate’s spoils, and we can... Uh....” think, Flashman, think! “Compare notes!” A+!

Fortunately, Tashigi is... weirdly gullible when it comes to people she likes. You almost feel guilty. “Okay!” She beams at the pair of you, followed by your mighty trio clambering up the gangplank and onto the ship proper.

“All right, let’s start on deck move onto the cabins and galley, then onto the holds. All right?”

>>3320075
Honestly you probably won't see any powerlevelling past this thread because QM has made it clear we're only going to improve by getting into proper fights right now.

The last few threads have been a training arc that will allow Flash to enter the Grand Line to take photos of even scarier pirates - if he was shit tier at defending himself then Smoker wouldn't even entertain the thought of taking him along with he chases after Luffy, and Flash would be stuck in Loguetown.
>>
>>3320079
>Sounds good!
>>
>>3320075
I will definitely take this into consideration, anon. This quest was actually meant to be about photography, with combat only if you failed to escape from a less-than-friendly criminal. Thanks to a load of crits during training, I can see why anons went for ‘holy shit he’s a combat prodigy’ (seriously, some of those rolls were bullshit), but I will be adding more photography to try and correct some of this. It’s too late to go back to the original plan, especially now Flashman will be traveling with Smoker, but I’ll certainly make sure it’s clear his duties are primarily of the taking pictures side of things.

I am planning a high-stakes photography competition later on, if that helps, though it won’t be for a while.

>>3320085
This is a good point, now you’re heading onto the Grand Line, you WILL need those skills to survive when you fuck up and get noticed. Originally you were going to be running around East Blue for ages, after all. Flashy’s stealth is still awful, though, so...

In Grand Line terms, you’re still weak even for Paradise standards. You’ll be fine against most early mooks and rookie pirates that have just entered the Line, but more experienced ones or DF users can kick your ass easy. Hiding behind Smoker will become your special skill.
>>
>aye aye, big sis!

“Sounds good!” You sketch a jaunty salute, feeling Mina make a similar motion. You all beam happily at each other, caught in the pure and beautiful currents of teamwork.

Which quickly crash and burn.

“So much... rigging...” you groan, dragging your pen onto paper to mark down yet another length of rope. “Whyyyyyyyyy?”

Tashigi gives you a disbelieving look. “Because... it’s a ship?”

“Sure, but do they have to leave it all over the deck? Store it properly, you incompetents! I’m already bored counting this stuff!”

“It’s been five minutes...” Mina whispers from your shoulders.

“Five minutes... that I’ll never get back...” you lament in horror.

Tashigi throws a small plank of wood at your head, which, admittedly, you probably deserve.

For the next twenty minutes (twenty! Twenty whole, entire minutes! Of 60 seconds each!), you keep your mouth firmly free of complaints. You’re actually all kind of getting into the swing of things, calling out supplies and numbers in an upbeat rhythm, Mina doing her best to learn all the names of parts and what they’re used for.

Finally - FINALLY - you!re done, the entire deck listed and tallied.

“To the cabins!”

“AYE AYE, SIR,” you and Mina declare and salute simultaneously. Tashigi might squeal a little in delight at bossing around another Officer. You pretend not to notice.

It’s the crew’s cabins first, and dear sweet ocean-going gods and spirits, you regret everything.

“We have to open ALL of these?!”

“Every cupboard, every chest, every bag, unroll every hammock,” Tashigi conforms.

>99 and a 91...

It’s when you’re rooting through a chest of books and paperwork (you picked this one because it wasn’t full of unwashed clothes, sorry Tashigi!), that you find something interesting.

“Uh, Tashigi? I think bossman might be interested in these.” You wave the binder at her, causing her to immediately stop her task of gingerly rooting through her own chest. You understand. Her one smells weird.

“These are... ship manifests?”

“Right! Looks like routes for them as well, someone was definitely getting them specific ships to target.”

Tashigi frowns, still flicking through the pages. “But why would this be in the crew quarters, rather than the officers’ or captain’s?”

Uh. You have no answer for that one. Not until you get to the next file. “I... think we might want to talk to whoever owned this chest.”

She peers over, intrigued. “Why?”

“‘Cause it looks like they might copied those manifests from their Captain, because they’re actually a Revolutionary. One dumb enough not to burn the evidence.” You show her the assorted letters, some coded, held within the file. “Jackpot~!”

There may be some high-fiving after that. You’ll never tell.

(Revolutionary information acquired! Traceable ship manifests acquired!)

It takes a full two hours to go everything else in everyone’s quarters and the galley, leaving only the holds to search.

For that sweet, sweet candy.

“We found it!” Mina cheers with delight, as after several boxes of stolen property, you come across a small crate marked ‘Honey-Gems (4 BM)’.

Tashigi perks up. “Found what?”

Your shoulders slump as Mina slaps a hand to her mouth. Curse her happiness! “Well... it’s like this... you remember when I called you about a thank-you gift?”

‘That was a few hours ago, so yes.”

“... Right. Well, it turns out that the woman in question likes this sort of candy. Aaaand these guys stole the only supply of it in Loguetown.”

Tashigi folds her arms. “So you made up a story about surveying the ship, just to find the candy?”

“... Yes.”

She stares at you, face expressionsless. “I’m amazed.”

“Is... it really that dumb?” You wince.

“Yes, but I’m mostly amazed Captain Smoker was actually sober when he called me up, and told me why you were planning on getting me to the docks.”

.......... Oh. Shit. You try not to twitch. “You - knew? All this time?”

She smiles as sweetly as the candy you’re trying to retrieve. “I wanted to see how long it would take for you to confess.”

“So... you’re not mad at me?”

Her smile widens.

“You’re mad at me, aren’t you.”

Unfortunately, despite three enthusiastic searches, the closest you can find to a suitable candy are chocolate cigarettes.

“It’s just not the same,” Tashigi sighs mournfully, as you stare down at the offending products.

You place a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “It’s all right.mthis just means the perfect gift is still out there. Waiting. Maybe it’ll appear at any moment!”

CRASHes promptly sound from above, followed by screams, and the smashing of... wood?

You and Mina glance at each other, shrug, and head up to see what all the commo- um. Okay.

There’s... a giant, beaten-up metal cat toppled across the deck, giant rents in its chassis. And the prow’s figurehead is missing.

“... Was the figurehead actually a giant cat robot?”

“Apparently so,” Tashigi sighs, already getting her whetstone out, “one of the crew was hiding out in it, and tried to get away when he thought we’d gone. Good thing it was terrible quality, but I still don’t know how I cut through that thing.”

(Tashigi has gained ability to cut through thin metal!)

Huh. Guess you know why they were called the Meowka Pirates.

(Dumbass pirate and trashed cat mecha captured! Honey-gems acquired! Smoker needs more cigars!)

The three of you troop back to base victoriously, once the pirate is confirmed as dead, and the mecha as trashed enough that no-one will try to steal it.

Plus, the actual surveyors turned up to check on the ship, so that was awkward.

But! Most importantly, you swan into base like you own, and up to Smoker's office like you aren't a regular cause of increased cigar consumption.

"Mission complete!" You saunter into his office, crowing your glory, while the bossman just looks to Tashigi.

"Got his candy then?"

"Yes sir. Actually admitted to his intentions, too."

"Astounding."

You cross your arms in a totally non-sulking way. "I'm right here."

"And we're all very happy for you," bossman says, smirking as taps a cigar out in his ashtray. You stick your tongue out at him. Maturely.

"On a more serious note, you should have a look at these, sir," Tashigi rescues you, stepping forwards to place the files down on his desk. "We also took down a pirate who was hiding aboard ship, and a... giant mecha cat."

Smoker pauses in reaching for the files. "What?"

"A giant mecha cat, sir. The pirate was piloting it."

Smoboss looks towards you with narrowed eyes. "Did you bring Grand Line levels of bullshit with you when you came here?"

You and Tashigi briefly explain the circumstances, while Mina plays with your hair. You should probably put her down soon, but oh well.

"Good job, Ensigns," Smoker finally says. Pulling out his den den. "And now get lost, I need to call this in, and you don't want to have to talk to the Brass."

From the way Tashigi flees, you suspect he's completely right, and run after her. Damn, she's fast when escaping from superiors, huh?

She's just coming from the staffroom as you enter, nodding in recognition. "Problem with the tat?"

"No, it's great," you promise. It is, after all, the sweetest tattoo in existence. "I just wanted to say a really late thank you for the whole 'hiding my uniform and looking after my swords' thing."

"Huh. Well, no problem. I like my clients being not-dead."

You reach into your jacket pocket, pulling out a paper bag of sticky goodness. "So you won't accept these honey gems, then?"

"... Give those here, or I'll rip your arm off."

You give them, very quickly, Clara opening the bag and visibly brightening at the sight of the round, oange-yellow candies. "Seriously? How'd you get these?"

You attempt to look mysterious. "I have my ways."

"And how'd you know I like these?"

You point at Lowl. "He told me."

"Hey!"

"Well, thank you. That's a less creepy explanation than I was worried about." She pops one in her mouth, and gives you a thumbs up. "Awesome. You want any more tattoos, let me know."

After morning getting-your-ass-kicked with Klaus, you made sweet, sweet shootings with your pistol.

(Pouncing Raccoon +1!)

First, there was your preparation - drawing up pictures of Klaus. It was, you knew, an important part of the design process, and an incredible morale booster to shoot him in the face.

Next, after pinning them to the belt and turning it on, was actually shooting the utter crap out of them. You set the speed higher this time, and while it’s harder at first, you find yourself compensating for the increased speed soon enough, starting to place yourself further back as well.

You’re not going to be shooting over your shoulder any time soon, but you’re kinda pleased with yourself. Especially when you manage government shoot both ears off the same Klaus within two seconds.

“I am a god of shooting things in the face!” You throw your hands in the air as you crow VICTORY (after making sure the pistol’s safety is on).

“Yay,” says one of the infantry on the next range.

You sulk at his lack of enthusiasm. If only those Academy jerks could see you now! Then someone would actually appreciate how awesome it is for you to do all this!

Training done, you get down and dirty with DUTY. By which you mean you check out the bounty office.

“Morning, Sheila!” You breeze in with a casual grin and quick finger-gun at the lady in question, who doesn’t bother looking up from her crossword puzzle.

“New photos needed,” she says, shoving a stack of files across at you.

You mock-swoon. “Your attention to detail warms my heart!”

“Go away.”

“Goiiiiiing~” Somehow, the patented Flashman charm remains imeffective on Sheila. You’ll try not to cry too much over it, mostly because you kind of think she’s an asshole.

You settle down in an empty chair (wheee, spinny!), and professionally peruse your pirate papers.

A couple of brand new pirates, who’ll probably die within a month. Oh, hey, Alvida apparently has a new appearance thanks to a Devil Fruit (that’s kind of weird), so she needs an update. Madman Jinku lost an eye, needs an update. Black Cat Kuro is... wasn’t he dead? Huh, guess not. It’s been years though, so another photo for him!

Well, they eouldn’t be reported to you if they weren’t suspected to be around Loguetown’s water, but what a pain in the ass. There’s usually only two or three come at once...

Hmm... it’s a Devil Fruit-created transformation, that sounds pretty big. In fact, the new description describes her as completely altered - if it weren’t for the same name, symbol and crew, witnesses would likely have thought it was an entirely new pirate.

Their description pretty much consists of ‘smoking hot’.

... Helpful.

She’s also apparently teamed up with the Buggy Pirates, which means two Devil Fruit users working together. Not good. Hopefully this is only a temporary alliance, but even so, it means you’,l need to be on the lookout for two Captains, plus both their crews.

What a pain.

All right, so target is set - and the files places here (and Buggy) as heading towards Loguetown. Now what?

You head for the docks, with the beginnings of a plan. Admittedly, you’ve never really worried about Pirates that aren’t already somewhere in Loguetown, but then, this time there aren’t any such. So a possibly approaching one will have to do!

The docks are as busy as ever, bustling with workers loading and unloading crates of goods, catches from fishermen, and making sure boats and ships are seaworthy. The question is, which I Of these guys are more likely to report on a pirate’s presence than to cover it up?

There’s a tiny bundle of weediness desparately trying to shove some boxes into s near stack, and... it just ain’t working out.

So, like the noble and valiant hero you are, you wander over to help.

“Hey,” you say brightly, before grabbing a box yourself, and ohwowtheseareheavyow - managing to swing it on top of another. “Want some help?”

The teenager looks torn between relief and uncertainty. “Um, I’m meant to be... welll...” He slumps. “Yes, please?”

Exactly what you wanted to hear! You give a quick salute, and start heaving the boxes, letting the dockworker handle the lighter-looking ones.

“This seems a big job for one guy,” you say casually, getting in to the rhythm of that mysterious thing called ‘actual, physical work’.

“Not for most of them,” the guy says, sounding despondant. You also can’t help but notice how he refers to his coworkers as ‘them’ instead of ‘us’.

“Then... shouldn’t they be doing it instead?”

He slumps down further, not really answering. “I guess.”

Gee whiz, how did you detect something was up? I sure done goofed.

>interrogate the loser

“... You sure about that, kid? I might not be that much to look at, but I'm still a Marine. You can tell me if there's a problem.” This is a blatant lie. You are clearly fantastic to look at. Admitting as such, however, doesn’t seem humble enough to put dockdude at ease.

That said, he looks at you with blatant confusion, and no sign of panic or embarrassment. “Um, no? The only problem I have is... well. You already know. I’m bad at my job, and everyone knows it.” He sucks in a deep breath, actually straightening. Wow. Dockdude looks almost determined! “So - thanks for helping out, really. But there’s nothing to worry about; I’m gonna hand in my notice soon, and find something easier.”

“All right, then,” you allow, still feeling something’s off. “But let me know if anything happens, okay?”

“Oookay?” Yeah, he definitely doesn’t have a clue.

“By the way,” you quickly add, as if an afterthought, “I’m actually here in case a certain pirate turns up on the island. Have you heard of a Captain Alvida?”

Weedydude pulls a face. “Yeah, I’ve seen her bounty poster. Seriously gross-looking. She’s really coming here?”

“Maybe,” you hedge, because if she has a functioning brain, she’ll avoid Loguetown. On the other hand, if she had a functioning brain, would she be a pirate? “That’s why I’m checking the docks for any sign of her ship. If you’re gonna work your notice here, maybe you could let me know if you see it dock?”

You give him the patented ULTIMATE FLASHY PUPPY EYES SUPREME (MARK II), holding up the old bounty poster, with her ship description attached.

Wusswuss looks torn. “I’m not really meant to snoop on the people who dock here... and she’s kind of dangerous...”

“It’s just her shiiiiip,” you croon, eyes evolving to MARK III. “Everyone else will see her ship, too! And no-one will know it’s you who called me. I won’t ever mention your name?”

“Really?”

“Really-really.” Mostly because you never found out his name. You think you’ll call him Noodle-Arms.

“Well... All right, then.”

Dock-worker reluctantly convinced, you hand over the old poster and your Den Den number with relief. You have an informant now! And not some guy you pay in chocolate drops! In fact, you’re not even paying this guy!

... That’s probably bad. Oh well!

You don’t like those docks. You feel like their major export is suspicion... to your heart!

That sounded better in your head.

Putting aside your incredible wit, you duck down an empty sidestreet, and call the bossman, who continues to pick up oddly fast. You don’t know if he’s just never busy, wants to stay on top of any urgent calls, or just know that if it’s you calling, there’s probably bullshit afoot.

... Can’t be the last part.

“What bullshit have you pulled now, rookie?”

Shit, it is the last one!

“Bossman! That’s rude, and I’m offended!”

“Am I wrong?”

You ignore that. “I’m just calling to let you know there’s weird stuff happening at the docks. So if I don’t come back to base tonight, assume I’ve been kidnapped by pirates. Again.”

You didn’t think a Den Den could sigh so long or hard. “Do I need to send a squad?”

“I don’t think so?” You consider it. “Nah, I’m good for now. If I die though, can you bury my weapons with me?”

“I’m hanging up now, idiot. Don’t get killed before I can smack you ‘round the head.”

“Okayby-“

CLICK.

I mean, I like the idea of Flashman being able to get into fights and not just automatically lose, but I get what you mean. It did feel a bit eh to have to go through a pretty boring selection of training votes when I was hoping more for DAY TO DAY SHENANIGANS with training either happening off-screen or happening In spaced out sections between day to day jobs. Honestly though, the whole TRAINING MONTAGE thing shouldn't be a big problem anymore, and I do understand It was kind of necessary to get It out of the way.

That said, I think for a lot of criminals that we absolutely can't defeat, fight scenario's might look like this.

>Be Flashman
>Have godlike photography skills
>Track down grandline Pirate for bounty picture
>Fuckup stealthy picture

>>
Sounds about right, Flashman might not be able to win any big fights, but he can take their picture and run away before they kill him. Now it's just a matter of getting photography to 25.

Also, weird idea, but what if we were the designated rival for all members of the weak trio?
>>
>>3323319
If we have Haki at Logue Town we might actually be able to be a relative threat to stronger crew members right now, especially considering how hard the crew found dealing with that Skypeia bunch.
I kind of want a camera flash Solar Flare like blinding technique.
Also I don't want Smoker and Tashigi to become as irrelevant as they became in canon.
One Piece has way too many characters because Oda barely ever kills people off and some threats came too soon, leading to some characters just being irrelevant.
Crocodile and Enel specifically should have appeared later on imo, or Crocodile should've made a tactical retreat or something rather than getting stomped.
Enel has the most overpowered fruit in the series bar none except maybe Sugar and his loss was still bullshit.
>>
>>3323342
>Haki
Even if it gets unlocked before the crew gets here it will still be super spotty and unreliable.
Zoro, Sanji and certainly Luffy will have enough sheer combat skills to stomp Flashman.

>>3323342
Smoker and Tashigi aren't going to become irrevelant anytime soon because Flashman is most likely going to travel with them when they decide to chase after Luffy.

Honestly I can see Luffy unlocking his Haki much earlier than Sabody in this quest, especially if he's exposed to Haki users like Flashman. Smoker was sidelined in canon because Luffy had no counter to his devil fruit powers before he got Haki, so if Luffy does unlock his Haki early then maybe Smoker can finally become the Garp to Luffy's Gol Roger.
>>
>>3323393
Can't wait to crash the Zoro vs Tashigi party and consecutively crit Zoro into submission.
Dragon blows everyone away anyway though so winning against Zoro is kind of irrelevant except that we'll have smashed his pride.

Oh shit, I like this. Changing my vote to support this. Make use of all our time with Smoker and try to mimic his no-nonsense demeanor.
>>
>>3323830
Hmm, tricky. Panicked yelling in general decreases DC because it’s a wonderful stress reliever. ‘Manly’ panic suggests yelling in a somewhat deeper than tone than Flashy’s usual shrieks of unmitigated terror, which suggests he’s consciously lowering said tone. That takes some mental focus away from his primary goal (i.e., not getting shot), but not a vast amount. I would say a +5 extra DC to attempt manly yells.

Plus, I just find shrieking and wailing funnier to imagine.
>>
>>3323860
If panicked yelling relieves stress, can we use it to make shooting easier? Can we use it on base when we are bored from paperwork. Can we use it when we get bored 5 minutes into a stakeout?

>100 + 20 = 120. i give up

Time slows down.

You have twelve bullets. You have two enemies.

Huh. Not too bad.

Time speeds up.

Guy on left, moving faster, bigger threat. You see him drawaimfire see the bullet it’s coming no no no your hand is already moving barrel pointing towards him pull trigger click bang done

He falls back and down, surprise on the remains of his face, hand still clenched around his holstered pistol. Didn’t he draw that? You thought he did?

Guy on right might be slower, but killing his buddy has given him enough time to get his head in the game. He’s already aiming at you, and you feel a brief flare of panic, before you choke it out and shove it in a dumpster at the back of your head.

He fires.

Time... doesn’t slow down. It doesn’t need to. You see the bullet, yes, see it emerge from the barrel in a blaze of light, see it trace a trail behind, in front, see it’s path this is where it’llgogonnayouinthechestnomovemovemove your own gun aims morepaths notthere notthere not- thatoneyes

You angle your body to the side, pushing up off the bags with a sharp lunge from your free hand, even as the other one holds in the right position, the one you saw hit, and fires.

His own bullet is still streaking on, and you probably shouldn’t let it hit the drugs, right? You don’t want to inhale anything weird, Smoboss would be... probably understanding, and that’s even more embarrassing.

So you angle your pistol and shoot the bullet out of the air.

They hit just as your previous one meets drug-dealer-dude’s face, and relieves him of it.

He falls back, too.

You stare at him. At his friend. At your pistol.

“What. The absolute. Shit?”

After a brief respite (to cackle like a maniac and rub the bullets against your face a little), you catch your breath, adjust your uniform, and pull out your Den Den, who looks highly displeased by all these late nights and getting thrown around.

“I’ll give you extra lettuce later, Mr Speedy,” you coo at him, giving his shell a quick pat, to which he responds by blowing a tiny raspberry at you.

You don’t know where he learned that.

In any case, the call goes out! Smoboss picks up - wow, first ring? It’s like he was expecting you to need hel- oh, he totally was, wasn’t he? So rude.

“BOSSMAN,” you calmly inform him, “I AM THE BEST GUNMAN IN EAST BLUE!”

>YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND MY POWERS

“No, but I’m high on life! And absolutely not all these drugs!”

“...” the Den Den says, eyeing you with an expression caught between ‘what the fuck’ and ‘I’m actually not even surprised’. It’s quite impressive. “Brat. What drugs are you talking about.”

“I’m in a warehouse, bossman! And there’s, wow, a lot of drugs here! Also some bodies! That I made! The bodies, not the drugs.” It’s possible that you might still have an adrenalin rush going, by the way you bounce around, poking at the thick bags as you talk.

“How much drugs?”

“... Big lots.”

There’s a gentle ‘thunk’ sound, suspiciously like a forehead meeting a desk. “Which warehouse are you in? Are you safe?”

“Oh, I’m fine, I shot both the guards,” you tell him cheerily, still feeling that rush of THRILL, even if not so strong now. “And if you’re going to fly over, it’s the warehouse with the hole in the roof. Did I mention I shot a bullet out of the air? Because I did. It was awesome. I’m awesome.”

“Hole in... rookie, I’m coming over. Do not. Inhale. Anything. Got it?” He sounds oddly... annoyed. How strange.

“What? Not even air?” Shut up, pedantic side of your brain!

“... Try to breathe a lot of air, your brain needs he oxygen.”

“Harsh.”

“But true. Call me if anything happens.” He hangs up; one day you’ll train him to say goodbye first, but today is, apparently, not that day.

Rush cooling off, you give one last bounce on your heels, and settle in to wait.

It won’t take long for Captain ‘I’m a Logia and can fly with my cheating cheaty powers’ Smoker to get here, so you spend your time doing something more useful than practicing dramatic poses for the next time you shoot a mid-air bullet like a badass.

You photograph the crap out of everything, just in case. Drugs. The bit of wall your sweet, sweet souvenir got stuck in. Thee bullets themselves.

(Photography +1!)

Yeah, you’re getting better even in this kind of crappy lighting.

And then it feels really close as an entire cloud of smoke pours through the hole in the ceiling, hits the floor, and transforms into a Marine, arms crossed and scowling at the drug-stacks, The bodies, then you.

It all started after I received an wanted poster update request. I went to the docks to talk a dock worker to inform if that specific ship arrived. I succeeded but there was something screaming in my guts wrong I couldn't place it so decided to investigate. “Well, I came to check out the docks to look into some info about a pirate. Long story short, even though I didn’t find anything, something seemed screaming-in-my-guts wrong,” you explain, beaming at your own professionalism and brilliance. “So after calling you, I climbed up to the roof, which I thoroughly investigated, before dynamically entering the premises. Upon making contact with these gentleman, they tried to stop my investigation with bullets, so I got Pistol-chan to investigate them back, even harder. Also with bullets. To their faces. She’s an amazing investigator.”

You hold out your shiny souvenir for him to be awed at. “To be honest, I have no idea how I did this shit. I saw everything I needed, and just did it. Did I do drugs, boss? Did Pistol-chan do drugs?”

Smoker, very gently, massages his forehead, eyes closed. No doubt in sheer wonderment at your Skills. “I wish I was on drugs.”

“Boss?”

“Did you actually have any reason to come in here, brat?”

Besides gravity and shoddy workmanship? “Um. I... heard... drug noises.”

Smoboss stares at you, eyes laconic. “Drug noises.”

“And look!” You point at the pile of bagged powder. “I found the source of the drug noises!”

Smoker sighs, tilting his head back and staring up at the hole. “It’s too late for this shit. Good job, somehow, rookie. I’m going to call the police in, and you can go get some sleep. Do NOT get into any more shit tonight, or I’ll have you cleaning toilets for a month.”

“Yeah, okay, but have you seriously looked at this?” You hold the bullets up again, waggling your eyebrows pointedly.

Smoker actually looks at them properly this time, his own (weirdly thin) eyebrow raising. “You really shot a bullet?”

“I wouldn’t lie about something so kick-ass!”

“Point. Huh.” And then... then he reaches over. And pats your head. “Nice one, brat.”

You nod frantically, some hind-part of your brain managing to comprehend his words, while most of it is stuck on ‘aaaaahhh, he patted my head! Again! Aaaaaaaaaghhh!’ Which isn’t very helpful.

The morning trainings doesn’t go so hot, lastly because you spent part of last night sitting on a rooftop, falling through a rooftop, shooting people beneath a rooftop, and then trying to get home after, uh, falling through a rooftop.

Ow.

“Sounds like someone had a busy night,” Klaus mocks you, because he’s a giant jerk and needs to be punched in the face.

“Sounds like you’re a giant jerk who need to be punched in the face,” you tell him, because your self-control is also less than great after you spent your ‘sleeping’ hours giggling over your half-melded bullets.

Worth it. Even if Klaus does kick your ass even harder.

You can’t help but feel he’s giving you quite an odd, thoughtful look as you stagger away at the end, but you’re probably imagining things.

The Den Den conveys a noise of interest. “Really? A pirate?”

“No, one of the dock-workers. I know it sounds crazy, but she touched some guy’s back and stole his strength without him noticing. I saw her hand glow, though.”

“That sounds... weird, but plausible. Worth checking out.” The Den Den looks away as Smoboss checks something out. “All right, keep an eye on her, but don’t do anything. You’re a photographer, not a combatant. And don’t climb on any roofs.”

As incredible as your ninja skills are, you can’t help but feel that Muscles might occasionally get suspicious that someone’s following her. Especiallymwit(the way she sometimes looks around, frowning, causing you to jump behind whatever’s nearby. In one case, another dockworker.

“Kid, just ask her out,” he tells you plaintively.

You are disturbed, and choose not to acknowledge this.

“Marine business,” you tell him seriously, holding a finger to your lips.

He shakes his head, sighing, and keeps on walking. By this time, muscles has moved on, so you sneak-sneak out and cont8ue sneak-sneaking sneaking after her.

Eventually though, one of the times you glance backwards, you see an tall, muscled guy in a Marine uniform rapidly approaching from the distant entrance, a trail of smoke curving from his three (wow, theee) cigars.

Backup has arrived!

You jab a finger in Muscles’ direction, so he knows who it is, and then wander over to one side to watch the fireworks.

Ka-tan will watch you silently and disapprovingly, while Cut-chan will friend-zone you with a comforting pat on the shoulder. Jitte-san is just wierded out in the background.
>>
>flash uses camera! it’s super effective

You get your camera ready as Smoboss approaches, heart sounding to pound in excitement. Here it comes! You didn’t get to see Smoker versus Kidd, but now you’re going to see an actual Devil Fruit fight! Not just those exhibition spars at the Academy!

Bossman gives you a faint nod as he passes, and you can’t help but give a thrilled bounce on your feet. Camera - aimed. You put your eye to the viewfinder, carefully steadying it.

Smoboss catches up with Muscles. He’s talking to her, casually - she seems... surprised. Wary. Refusing something. Then shrugging. Nodding. Smoboss casually puts a hand on his cuffs, the seastone ones, and -

She totally flips.

You’re not even worried for Smoboss; you start taking pictures the second you see her hand lunging out for him, as he turns to smoke in an instant and rushes around her grasping arm.

In a second, rings of smoke are wrapping around her, slamming her to the ground, several plumes slamming the jitte down on the back of her neck. Another second, and Smoker is human again, with one boot shoving her down, crouching down to snap the cuffs on her, while smoke holds the jitte in place.

So... crap. How many pictures did you manage to take in about three seconds flat?

You sulk a little, but keep angling for better as Bossman drags her to her feet, face utterly bored. Apparently this wasn’t exciting for him any more than it was for you to take pictures.

(Photography +2!)

Camera in hand, you wander over, pursing your lips. “Really, boss? You couldn’t have drawn it out a little, let me get some good shots?”

He snorts, not bothering to slow down as he keeps dragging her to the exit, despite her repeatedly trying to kick him. That’ll work out well for her! “Sorry if I don’t throw a fight so you can take a few pictures, brat.”

I approve of this entirely. Full androgyny, suit, coat and hat. Possibly smoking heavily. Really hammer in that noir detective vibe.
>>
>flashy is magnanimous

“I forgive you, this time,” you tell him, full of mercy and compassion. “Because I’m so nice.”

You see Smoboss roll his eyes, which is why you don’t see the smoke tendril that comes Fromm behind and smacks you round the back of the head.

“Hey! I got you a shiny, new captive!”

“Thank you, I’ll treasure her forever. Or at least until I toss her in a cell.” He plucks a cigar from his mouth, and you can see he”s relaxed, almost ambling rather than his usual stride. Apparently today is a good day.

You hold your camera up, looking through the gallery. There’s actually a few good shots in there, nice, dramatic, artistic sorts, despite the way you were hammering the button in order not to miss the whole thing,

“Got anything?”

You glance up at Smoker’s unexpected comment. “Uh, yeah? The lighting was pretty good, so...” You shrug, not quite sure how to say ‘you look really badass, boss!’ Without it coming off as brown-nosing or brainless fanboying. “I’ll stick one on your fridge!”

“I don’t have a fridge.”

“I’ll stick one on your desk!”

“I’ll destroy my desk.”

“... I’ll stick one on a Pirate Emperor!”

“If you even think about trying that, I’ll put YOU in a cell.”

You sulk.

"I gotta go check on the guy who's strength she was yoinking, " you remember, yoinking being professional terminology.

"Tell him if he wants to press charges, he can stop by the base," Smoboss says, possibly the chillest you've ever seen him. "She's already going away for attacking me, but more charges won't hurt."

Damn, boss.

"And don't get into any more trouble," he calls behind him as you let him wall ahead, "or else."

You gulp, and head back to the docks.

As it turns out, it's not that hard to find Noodle-arms, because he's now less noodle and now a steak. You can see this easily, because the remainder of his shirt doesn't cover much.

"Nice gains, dude!" You flip him some finger-guns, as the crowd of workers around him find other places to be.

The boy-formerly-known-as-Weedy beams ecstatically. "It just happened! I just swelled up all of a sudden, and the guys had to cut my shirt off because it was too tight!" He flexes an arm, staring at the visible roll of muscles. He won't be out-benchpressing you any time soon, but he looks like an actual dockworkers now. A shirtless one. "I wonder how this happened..."

"It sure is a mystery," you agree, straight-faced. "So, uh, not to detract from your bulging bicep self-appreciation society, but... seen Alvida's ship at all?"

Steakchest shakes his head. "Sorry, no. But I heard one of the ships we were expecting was attacked by her, not far out. Looks like she'll be coming to Loguetown, but she might dock somewhere else on the island."

You slump in disappointment.

"But hey, I heard you guys broke up some drug-smuggling ring last night!" Steaky tries to cheer you up. It's not very effective... "There must have been a huge fight, we had blders here to patch a hole one on the roofs!"

"Ha ha, yes. A fight." You backtread quickly. "I must go now. My people need me."

"Are you oka-"

"Call me if you spot the ship, bye!"

Well. That was a bust.

>I CHOOSE YOU, DETECTIVE PISTOL-CHAN

From the bright lights of Marineford to the dark alleys of Loguetown, you've traveled them all. You've stared into the faces of evil. And you've shot 'em.

Your name is Detective Pistol-chan, and you're not so much a son-of-a-gun as a straight-shooting pistol that packs a punch.

But that's not what you need right now.

In these grim days, your partner - a green-as-grass rookie with wide-as-dimes eyes and a heart still unshrivelled - needs your help. Not your iron-cold killing skills, but your street-smarts and a cunning borne of a life spent beat up and kicked down.

Your partner needs a pirate. So you're gun-na find one.

"Go, Pistol-chan!"

He throws you with a passion that can only exist in one so inexperienced. How much longer can he live without the bitter taste of betrayal, of loss? You can't even find it in you to pity him. The inexorable pain of existence is simply that - impossible to avoid. How can one even try to -

"Okay, this way, then! Thanks, Pistol-chan!"

He picks you up, holstering you once more, in the sweet embrace of darkness. You rest, as only a gun can, waiting until you once more bring death. Your only reason for being, devoid of companionship, of warmth, with only the sweetness of oil and the cool kiss of loading bullets to sustain you.

It's enough. With the kid, it's enough.

... But damn, you wish you could drink.

You trust in Detective Pistol-chan's skills. Plus, you just think it's funny to pick a direction based on throwing things in the air, but you're not going to admit that to anyone.

That said, you kind of regret your action as you leave Loguetown, making your way through brush and undergrowth, changing to trees and overlarge insect.

Speaking as a small-village boy turned city-boy, who never had reason to go into woods before now... ew.

Twenty minutes of walking through this hellhole of green stuff that would be better on a plate, and you're almost ready to call it a day.

But no! You can't give up on Pistol-chan's incredible detective talents! You believe in himherit!

... You're bored, and you wish you'd packed a lunch.

"Are we there yet, Pistol-chan," you mumble under your breath, before you pause, hearing something.

Waves? And - voices?

You sniff the air. Sea-salt. Yeah, you're close to the sea.

Crouching low, you shuffle slowly forwards. It takes a few minutes until you reach the edge of the trees, thick woods changing to nothing but low bushes as the ground abruptly slopes down, down to a pebbled beach.

And a ship.

The Black Cats Pirates' ship. With crewmembers lounging on deck.

"So, boss," you say brightly. "I know you said 'don't get into trouble, and I'd like to point out that I'm not IN trouble, just looking at it. Trouble all for you! Like the gift that keeps on... troubling."

The den den's eyes narrow. "Explain."

"Uh - Pistol-chan is the greatest detective in the world! So we found the Black Cat pirates!"

"... Back up, brat. Pistol-chan is... Your pistol."

"Yes."

The den den sighs. "And who's 'we'?"

"Uh."

"Is the answer still 'my pistol?"

"... No comment."

"You know what? I don't even care. Are you safe right now?"

"Yup! Hidden away and watching them."

"At the docks?"

"Oh, no, I'm at... um. If you leave the docks, and then go North-North-East until you leave Loguetown, then for twenty minutes, and I'm there."

"Brat, how do you know the exact direction from the docks?"

"I have a compass?"

"Acceptable!"

"And thank you for looking after Ensign Flashman, who I'm not certain is either a raging idiot or a genius who enjoys messing with me."

"Definitely the idiot," you clarify.

You salute, remember that doesn't carry over the den den, and nod. "Bossman, yes bossman!"

He hangs up, and you take a moment to linger of thought in 'what could have been', before you start carefully moving away.

Forty minutes later, you're back at base, definitely not sulking as you shovel seconds into your face in the mess. It's empty, because nearly everyone on base is attacking a damn pirate ship that you and Pistol-chan found.

Carefully putting your babies away, you stand up, stretch out, and decide it's time for some self-care of your own.

Which means training in really cool shit.

You don't need the training grounds for this - your quarters aren't large, but they're big enough for learning how to switch kami-e on and off at will.

Sure, you don't have anyone actively attacking you, but you can make do with an important training tool you picked up in town.

A rubber ball.

A pair of rubber balls, in fact, which you bounce off a wall, hard enough to ricochet right back at your face.

KAMI-E NOW QUICK

Ohh yeeeah~

You twist your body back to normal, grab the balls, and toss them again. And again. And again.

(Kami-e, D -> D.3! .7 more before level C!)

After a long ninety minutes of throwing a ball at various parts of your anatomy, Mr Speedy rings. You pause, glancing over, realize who it likely is (either Smoboss or Steaky) and flinging yourself at him to answer.

"Yeah?"

"Brat."

That ain't Steaky. "Hey, boss! Good to know you're alive and all. I'd have know earlier if I'd have been there, but this is good too, I guess!"

The den den raises an eyebrow. "Feeling aggressive, rookie?"

"I would have worked it off, but someone made me go back and throw a ball at myself instead." That's right. You polished your sword and played with your balls instead.

"I won't ask. Anyway, your infor- Pistol-chan's information checked out. The Black Cat pirates are either dead or in cells. Happy?"

>Yes.

I voted to go home because the leader of the Black cat pirates has a nasty flash step technique that even early manga Luffy had a hard time against. Flashy is weaker than Luffy even at the beginning of the manga, so if the dice wasn't kind he'd be cut up like salami.

I'd rather Flashman be in top shape to get his ass kicked by Zoro
>>
>>3325124
A) Smoker had more time to prep for this and call in more men from patrols, because the ship wasn't near a bunch of civilians he needed to worry about.
B) The Black Cats aren't as dangerous and don't have DF users, so an extra low-level officer wasn't needed.
C) He's more cool with Flashy being a noncombatant photographer now, rather than just thinking a Marine should be expected to assist in combat. Before, he reluctantly let Flashy join in - now he mentally goes 'Flashman is a photographer. A trouble-attracting noncombatant. Like a civilian. KEEP HIM AWAY FROM FIGHTS.' Which is, technically, what he should be doing.
>>
>>3325128
I figured we just wouldn't fight Kuro, like we did for Kidd. I think it would have been easier to set up a 1-on-1 between him and Smoker, since his crewmates would get the hell outta there before he starts his AoE move.

>>3325132
Ah, this explains a lot. Smoker is just being a responsible and sensible captain. Boooo! I want bloodshed!

"Yes. I suppose." You aren't sulking. Really. "I just wish I had a bigger part, is all."

"... Brat, if you hadn't found them, they might have resupplied and left without us ever knowing. You don't think that's big?"

You consider. "Stabbing them in the face is bigger."

"I'll admit that's true. But you'd already done enough, so don't worry about it. You did a good job." He doesn't say Pistol-chan did a good job, but you'll ignore it, just this once.

You sigh. "Thanks, I guess."

Smoboss makes a vague 'hmm' noise. You have zero idea what it means. "Brat..." He trails off.

"Yeah?"

"I'll make it up to you. So stop feeling bad. Deal?"

Of course that's gonna perk you up. "Oh? How?"

"I haven't thought that far ahead yet, but I promise. So, deal?"

Work your way around this as you will. Or don't, and just take photos, like you're meant to!

>>3325144
Maybe, but it's more 'show you're capable of looking after yourself'. Which is kind of a catch-22 when you're being ordered to stay out of fights and trouble. If only there were a strong, but not murderous pirate crew to prove yourself against...

"Shit, there goes plan A."

"I'm flipping you off right now," you inform him, even though you aren't. Smoboss snorts.

"All right, I've got far too much paperwork to do. Come up tomorrow after training and help, if you're that desperate to be useful."

"Aye aye, bossman!"

"Night, idiot." He hangs up.

Did he... technically say goodbye? ... Nah. Couldn't have.

You throw the ball a few more times, but too distracted to properly focus, and call it a night.

Maintain weapons again. That was a good feeling. Should make it a habit, that way Flashman doesn't stress out.

>Any preference for Flashy's date of birth?
October 6th. For no reason at all. Nope. Not a single one.

>Have you guys thought any more on a dream/ambition? It can wait if not.
At this point, I think Flashman doesn't really have a concrete dream other than to go around and see the world, maybe have some misadventures. I imagine growing up in the orphanage, he might have read some Marine propaganda stories like the Germa 66 stuff, so he thought the Marine path would be a good for this.

>What do after sword training tomorrow?
Pistol training

>Any preference for Flashy's date of birth?
Not really

>Have you guys thought any more on a dream/ambition? It can wait if not.
I think for all the whining and posturing he's simple. He dreams of family and friends. All he desires is to be useful to them and them to acknowledge him. Besides that, he doesn't give a fuck about someone else dream of being best swordsman, finding all blue or becoming king of the pirates. I guess his dream is to live an exciting life with family. Anything else is a goal that would bee neat but not crucial.

>Have you guys thought any more on a dream/ambition? It can wait if not.
Just spitballing, but what if Flashy's dream was something like breaking expectations? It wouldn't even need to be something he realizes about himself, but he could be driven by an underlying desire to be more than just some orphan kid who's life falls apart the moment he's left to fend for himself. He wants to be someone special, even if he doesn't know what kind of special he wants to be yet.

It would make sense of several things. For example, it'd explain his sudden affection for his weapons. For the first time in his life, he's realizing that he's good at something useful, and it's all because he trusted the weapons he was holding, instead of fighting against them like he did back when he was trained at Marineford. It could also be the reason why he would drive himself to learn everything there is to know about Marine law despite clearly not being interested in a desk job. He just wanted to be an expert at *something.* Hell, why would he be training so hard with his weapons if not because he likes the idea of being an exceptional fighter?

It'd all come back to that core desire of not being as worthless as everyone always expected him to be. Proving that he can make a splash and show everyone how much he matters.

also i think the number 6 is funny because in my country our word for six is sex so six=sex

>Have you guys thought any more on a dlyream/ambition? It can wait if not.
Flashman hasn't shown much ambition to have a defining dream desu

He likes photography sure, but not to the extent he wants to be the world's best photographer. He likes his weapons, but he doesn't look like he wants to be the best weaponmaster of the blues. Honestly all he wants to do right now is to be free to enjoy his photos / his weapons / his budding family.
