Sorry it took so long. Its amazing how many times you delete and rewrite things when you have the chance to instead of writing it on the fly, really...

***

We give our winged princess a kiss, and let her stay as she is for a bit longer.

With the cooldown finally refreshed, we breed lady Moshi and lady Adia once more before turning them back, and thanking them for their help.

"It was rather interesting." - says lady Moshi - "Thank you for an interesting experience."

The lady Adia bows gracefully.

Once we return them to their cousin's court, we need to go back and inspect the defenses on the island.

Indeed, since we realized the [ERROR]s can't phase through natural barriers (or in effect, the ground), we did our best organizing moats and experimental 'natural walls' made up by fast-growinmg weeds and grass over simple mounds of earth.

Well, those 'walls' are just an experimental afterthought, and our defenses are not reliant on them at all.

Our ancestors wrote down that 'bricks laid with intent' are also effective in stopping their advance, but while it seems to have been something obvious to them, I sure wish they had been a tad more specific.

Anyway, our real walls are made up by rows and plant-type monsters ruled over by Fleur, which should prove into quite the obstacle instead.

"Ah, Master, where is Fleur's spot?" - asks our flower pet as she runs over to us while we inspect the work

"You are staying in the back to fill any holes in the defense. Make sure that you also delegate to lesser plants so that we don't have to rely on only you all the time, otherwise we won't be able to defend many places at once."

Also if she Evolves other plant monsters into higher evolutions by eating [ERROR]s, she'll truly be more of a Plant Empress by ruling over other Queens.

Its better not to show any favoritism. Besides, we did spend several large fortunes updating the navy at home, after all.

Alright, let's have the Eopolitan navy supporting the imperial fleet (its their territory after all), with the dreadnought as artillery support and supply ship.

Well, with that, we send a message to our alliance members asking them to gather north of the island, and have to wait for a few days while everyone maneuvers into position.

In the sky, the portal is growing larger and larger every day. It looks like they are really preparing to move a force unlike any we've seen before.

*sigh* Well, as the date draws near, we have no choice but to wait it has been enough.

The crusader is our navy's oldest rockitship, but that doesn't means its old. Besides, It was built to be a symnol, and as such, it is rather massive, though its 'carroer' role was originally intended to be about gryphons, and as such its 'docking ports' are not really meant for the fast rockitship gunboats that are coming into favor with the navy as of late.

We could probably do something with flying pets, though we have indeed begun raising gryphons again, which means we've recovered much of the casualties they took during the war.

It wasn't known as 'the gryphon's war' for nothing, after all, as hundreds of the beasts were fielded by both sides.

Perhaps more importantly, we've retrofitted the crusader with huge lightning lances and broadsides in most of its currently empty gryphon 'nests'

And thus, we're onboard the crusader when the day comes...

Our joint forces are filled by rockitships and normal ships-of-the-line, though both of them are present in an artillery role, as the [ERROR]s are expected to land en masse unto the island.

"It is a pity we cannot just evacuate and bombard every place in their target list." - comments a navy officer

Well, I'd say we got lucky they are targetting the islands and not the continent in their first mass invasion.

As the portal opens, it looks as if an oil fountain had broken as a nearly solid mass of glistening black pours down unto the island. Hundreds of thousands of [ERROR]s are being regugitated unto the land below.

"Yes sir!"

The signal is given as planned, and our combined forces begin shelling their landing spot with lightning

Lightning blasts from all directions focus on the base of the black pillar-like stream of monsters, yet even as everyone's hair stands on end, it is hard to say if we are successfully thining their numbers or not.

All we can do is stick to the plan and hope.

Okaba's sorcerous corps can't approach due to the massive blasts, and so his troops land on the rockitships, waiting for the fighting to grow up close and personal.

The dreadnought opens fire with its mana cannon, causing a quiet yet overwhelmingly powerful THOOOM! to cause everyone's bones to shiver, even though we were neither its target nor close to its line of fire.

A small new bay is formed as the beam modifies the landscape, and the sea rushes in to fill the area.

As the downpour of blasts ends, the [ERROR]s continue to fall and fill up the new bay in moments. Silence dominates the command deck until the flow of monsters ends almost as suddenly as it started.

"Alright, that's more than we expected, but no more than we feared. How soon can we open fire again?"
"It will be a little under a minute, sir."
"Alright, they still need to find the fortifications. It should be at least a couple of minutes before they realize we evacuated the island, IF they can communicate with each other that we did so."

The entire ships humms for a moment as the lance shoots a beam of electric white towards the mass of [ERROR]s in the shore. They are so numerous that not only have they already filled the brand new bay, but have spilled into the surrounding area and covered it with black.

The beam hits, and a mushroom cloud rises up, puking lightning in every direction. We shiver a little imagining the smell of charred flesh, but the true is that the [ERROR]s bodies are made of.. something else.

Once the cloud disperses under the wind, we can see that a rather-too-big a number of [ERROR]s have survived, and begun moving towards the nearby (empty) city.

"It is a shame to blow up people's homes..." - comments Aritsu
"They'd be destroyed anyway. This way they serve a purpose."

On our signal, the fleet opens fire once more, having waited until the [ERROR]s were halfway into the town-

***

Wait, I just realized I explained this poorly. There's so many [ERROR]s that they will easily cover the whole town and still have coverage to spare. I just realized, while typing, that you seem to think they all fit inside the town.

The reason I was asking for "as they go in" or "as they go out" was actually from The Art of War, which suggests you should wait until at least 1/2 of the enemy's forces are crossing a dangerous spot with low maneuverablity (in the book, a river is used as an example) to attack them, so that they have trouble retreating to bringing the rest of their forces forth to help defend the ones you're attacking.

In this case, what I meant to say, in less vague terms was:

>Attack them to reduce their numbers and slow them down as much as possible, since they'll be crossing a burning town (a difficult spot to cross through) so our forces fight them in trickle numbers for a fair while. Only kill about 20% of them but make the remaining 80% move in slooowly

or

>Reduce their numbers as much as possible, but then the remainer of their forces can all rush our troops positions. Kill 60% but the remaining 40% rushes our troops

Anyway, goin to bed, see you tomorrow
>>

Isn’t that what waiting until the enemy is halfway through the town is for?
>>
>>3322284
yes, if the enemy army is, overall, smaller than the town. It is not. It is larger than the town
>>
>>3322468
No, I think you're confusing "army is halfway through the town" and "army reaches the halfway point through the town". The former requires the army to be smaller than the town, the latter just requires the front of the army to reach the halfway point through the town, regardless of how much of the army is in the town or not.
>>
>>3322468
>>3322477
what are we arguing about?
>>

King thinks that the option "Other: Halfway into town" means when half the [ERROR] army is in the town.
But I'm saying that it means when the front of the [ERROR] army has reached the halfway point of the town.
>>

The town burns, trapping most of the enemy on the opposite side of our forces. As before, they are unable to move through non-artificial terrain, and much to our delight, it seems the flames count.

No, its not that they're just as weak to fire as anyone else. We lab-tested it.

The end effect of it, though, is that they have to channel the massive army through the small streets and passages between the burning buildings, which slows them down immensely.

"Alright, it looks like our troops won't have to handle a single wave anymore."
"Should we create fire pits in the future?" - asks Lyann

The [ERROR]s begin moving towards our fortifications, well visible from town as they're on top of the hills nearby.

As the black army (swarm?) trickles past the burning city and begins approaching the thicket fence surrounding the whole hill, the ground starts collapsing and breaking open as massive pods of vegetable matter are pushed up, and a shiver runs down our spines as we imagine the 'splooch'-like sound as dozens of them tear open down the middle, showing off massive 'teeth' made of thorns, with countless sticky, long purple and light green, dripping tentacles all aimed towards the [ERROR] swarm.

The 'pods' reveal themselves as the massive mouths of anthropophagous plants that are still lifting over the ground surface, now revealed to be like the heads of massive snakes.

For a moment, it appears as it the [ERROR]s pause in their advance, but before we can appreciate any further reaction, the plants swipe down and start to pick them up three or more at the time before pulling back up, crunching, wrapping and swallowing in slow but constant motion.

Still, it seems a bit ...slow. If we had waited until most of the [ERROR] army was already past the town, it would have been more than numerous enough to simply overrun the plants, it seems.

"Open fire on the [ERROR]s that haven't reached town yet."
"Yes sir!"

The alliance navy opens fire again, and the [ERROR]s react to it by trying to move towards us, though they cannot move over water, and thus begin piling up along the shore, only to wander off in random directions after a bit.

Sadly, they don't just stand there and let us bomb the fuck our of them, or it would have been incredibly convenient. Instead, they begin moving back towards the innards of the island, spreading all over and dissapearing into the canopy.

"We've succeeded in slowing their advance, but if they don't go back to the fort on their own, it will be hell hunting them down in the jungle. It may even be years before the island is judged safe again." - says our vide admiral
"We need to lure them towards the fortress in slow, controlled waves, but how...?"

After a bit, we see that the large plants seem to wither and bend towards the ground, and hundreds of much smaller pods start poking the surface around the fort.

The [ERROR]s continue their advance between the pods, but after a few minutes, these begin to open up and reveal each of them held two, sometimes three 'Thorny Flower's, which are Fleur's first evolutionary step.

Each thorny flower is about as large as a calf, and quickly latches on to the larger [ERROR]s or swallows a smaller one.

We can somehow hear, hundreds of meters away, the sound of suckling and chewing.

Still, hundreds of [ERROR]s made it past the pods, and move towards the hilltop dortress, and the single, petite humanoid figure on their path.

This figure being Fleur, she looks at the monsters with a expression of desire bordering on lust. She needs to wipe the drool falling off her cute little mouth as she starts walking towards them as quickly as she can (for some reason, we've never seen her run, and if she's not running now, she may just be unable to). with massive green snake-like things crawling along and behind her as if they were huge eels wadding on a shallow pool.

As the largest [ERROR] on the swarm's vanguard turns towards her, Fleur opens her cute little mouth and goes 'aaaah' while six green tendrils as thick as giant sequoia rupture the ground and wrap around its body, much like a squid wrapping around a sperm whale.

The [ERROR] dissapears in a single moment, and the rest of its swarm pauses and breaks, continuing to move forth while giving Fleur a wide room.

Of course, our little glutton is not okay with it, and starts moving towards them, only for the [ERROR]s to move away with the same fluidity a school of fish may show when running away from a shark.

Still, plenty of the things get snatched away as Fleur's thin arms reach forth into the air, and a giant tendril comes out from the ground and wraps around a bunch of lesser [ERROR]s or wraps around a large one, before sinking back into the ground.

About half of the 'thorny flowers' have been squished by the trampling [ERRPR]s now, but the remaining half have finished their evolution into 'spitting thorny flowers,' and after half sinking into the floor, they start 'shooting' harpoons out of their open maws towards the nearest [ERROR]s, then pulling towards themselves with the inescapable strenght of a tree anchored with deep roots into the earth.

Even while saying 'only half the thorny flowers managed to evolve,' one shouldn't forget that there were hundreds of them to begin with.

1/?
>>
>>3326170
A few of the 'spitting thorny flowers' get trampled by the truly largest [ERROR]s. or uprooted as they literally try to swallow more than they can chew.

A handful of brand new massive plants sprout up on the sides of the [ERROR] army as the monsters try to go around Fleur and wander into the yet-untouched picket fences around the fort, and then take in huge mawfuls of monsters before similarly whitering and 'dying' while birthing another hundred 'thorny flower's

We signal the fort commender to begin supressive fire, and sit back to see the plants feast on their natural prey.

Indeed, it is quite amazing, though we shouldn't forget that the [ERROR]s would probably overrun the fort by now if we hadn't slowed down their movement.

But they are not ours, so we wouldnt be able to choose those evolutions anyway

The seed pod-like cocoon blooms open, and Fleur stands (or rather, floats) in mid air while slowly flapping wings of delicate and thin, golden flower petals matching her gikden hair.

She gestures upwards, and ten times as many massive root tendrils as before erupt out of the floor, sporting massive jaws at their ends, which immediately swallows up a massive share of the [ERROR]s before them.

In her final form, Fleur is still on the petite side, though her finely proportioned form clearly points towards her maturity, with a little over half her height coming from her legs, and her six, thin wings spread a full five, six and four feet towards her right and left.

Out of the several dozens of spitting thorny flowers that faced the trampling of the [ERROR] army, fully half of them have evolved into Thorny Flower Queens similar to Fleur when we first met her.

These new queens quickly and happily start summoning thorny flowers of their own, using them to gobble up the [ERROR]s around them, and drain as many nutrients as they can.

Sadly, their numbers thinned to half a dozen from their starting hundreds, only three of the new queens actually survive all the way to the end of the battle, each having reached a rather high level before wandering off into the jungle to look for any [ERROR]s that escaped the battle.
