In the last session we said goodbye to Nike' and decided that our next two goals were to finish with the wall and to get the dwarves to recolonize the ruin. Before we left, we decided that village security is lacking and it is mostly due to luck that they weren’t destroyed while we were gone. Thus, each militia member received a set of gambeson armor and the amount of light ballista in the armory increased to the total of 12. After that problem was addressed Haven and Sigrid decided to accompany us in this expedition and after rowing through the dangerous lava tube river, we’ve finally reached something…
>>
>>3288365
The light at the end of the lava tube ended up being some kind of forward outpost of the nearby dwarven settlement. It was placed just before the area where the underground river forks so they couldn’t afford to seal off the path towards the ruined city. You were worried that you’d have to bust through a barricade or disassemble a floodgate through a wall somehow but you were lucky. The settlement’s shape reminds you of a peanut as it consists out of two connected spheres. The lower sphere contains the river, docks, farms and peasant dwellings while being separated from the other one by a massive fortification that completely blocks the chokepoint. It is quite obvious that it is where the nobles and maybe other rich people live.

It took you almost eight hours to row all the way here. To be fair, it is quite a scotophobic experience and it is obvious your group was not prepared for this. It seems that your boat was not designed to pass through this tunnel because a much larger vessel brightly lit up with glowing quartz passed you and took a turn right to make its way towards the western coast. The creatures that attacked you are sensitive to light and probably a lot of local monsters fear it as well so anything travelling through the labyrinth needs to carry a powerful and permanent light source. Feeble torches just won’t do.

Curiously, it seems that this cave lacks a naturally floating chunk of quartz in the ceiling and instead an arrangement of thousands smaller crystals are placed in neat patterns in the wall itself making it look like a night sky. Unfortunately, the produced light is not much brighter than twilight on the surface and to compensate dwarves heavily employ street lights and giant lamps that illuminate their fields 24/7 based on glow quartz.

As you made your way through the river toward the docks you started collecting attention. It is not too strange, after all the three of you are almost twice as tall as the locals and you appeared from the direction of a sealed ruin. A group of local guards collected from their posts in the docks and moved in to meet you. They were all wearing full plate steel armor that was designed with the strength and proportions of the dwarves in mind. The armor looked heavier than late medieval suits and it was “blockier” than armor made for humans. Apparently dwarves prefer heavier armors with thicker metal to armors designed to deflect the blows.

The guard captain introduced himself as Wulfsige Rikuomk and they would like to know who you are, where you came from and why.

You reply that you are monster hunters and that you managed to take down the creature that destroyed a city nearby several decades ago. As a proof you had enough foresight to cut off and grab one of the “smaller” claws of the creature which was just small enough to fit inside of the boat. To say that the dwarf was surprised is to say nothing and you were immediately allowed to dock and disembark without any additional headache.

After grabbing the two-meter-long trophy you were escorted through the town streets and the large market to get to the noble districts. This settlement is apparently called Gelkihm and it is just large enough to be called an Underhome. It is smaller than both Kamyur and the ruin and seems to be mainly a trading city. There is little mining, farming or processing going on while the docks and markets are extensive. Unlike the commoner area the noble district is several times smaller and contains the local dwarven ruler’s palace and numerous noble residences made out of marble. Most of the rock in the Labyrinth is igneous while marble is metamorphic which probably makes it more expensive. In addition, Nike’ said that marble is a requirement for construction of an Oracle shrine so it is probably a good material to hold your particular kind of psychic energy.

The palace itself is fascinating as well. It seems that dwarves are not familiar or don’t want to apply the concept of a castle for their rulers. Probably the additional layer of defenses around the king is not as important as the other fortifications they utilize such as that series of walls at the chokepoints. The palace itself is large and has a lot of engravings but it looks a bit blocky. Most probably the lack of rain in this cavern influenced the architecture as well.

After almost two hours of waiting in front of the gates while everything was getting verified you were finally allowed to enter into the main building of the palace. The dwarven king Burim along with a dozen or so advisors have assembled in what seems to be a combination of a grand dining hall and a throne room. The walls of the room were decorated with paintings that were somehow drawn with various kinds of metals from gold to steel and almost all furniture was made out of some kind of dark blue wood that you can’t recognize.
>>
>>3288493
After exchanging pleasantries and hearing your description, the king seems hesitant. While you’ve brought a giant monster’s fang, he is still somewhat skeptical about your ability to literally down a creature the size of a small mountain. In addition, even if the creature is dead, city suffered a lot of damage and he would have to share the reclamation with other dwarven kings which can take years to reach the agreement. While the city was an amazing bulwark against monsters and a prime spot for industry all of that is now either completely destroyed or damaged and in need for repairs so it won’t be giving out dividends for the dwarves any time soon…

>We can escort a small group of dwarves to see the situation for themselves and return to report if he is indeed skeptical

Well, we left the treasure there to rebuild the city, help Farsalos with the wall and to get a lot of rep with them, lets use it.

I have something to tell you Sig but you have to promise not to worship me ok? Lol

We can ease her into our powers, we start showing progressively stronger stuff so she can get used to it.
I would like that our closeness is due to actually liking each others company and not some sense of divine reverence, this will be hard, maybe tell as little as we can.
Imagine her surprise that her friend that stares at her for maybe too long at the sauna is actually a goddess. Lol

After a few other rounds of negotiations, the king and his court finally budges. The promise of the surface exit is amazing news for them as it allows for trade. Dwarves consider many of the surface grown foods and items made out of surface trees as luxurious and their own products are considered exotic and high-quality meaning that the trade route will get massively profitable. In addition, since there are no more exits in the region it would drive the demand up allowing for even more mutual profit.

The part about money would massively help in the short term as it would allow to get dwarves to move and work. Dwarves are sedentary creatures that don’t like moving much or large changes in general so they can’t just herd a town of serfs into a boat and ship them where needed. It would cost money to set up the facilities and get some dwarves to live there for people to want to move in.

Regarding the slain monster, the king says that your proposal seems reasonable. He can fund a single expedition with a small ship and a few dwarves to get there, check out the situation and get back home. If you show them the killed beast and the path to the surface, he is willing to reward the three of you with essentially an “honorary dwarf ally” title which allows you to live on the dwarven territory. It is essentially a citizenship permit plus honors and some fame. Dwarves in general are a little bit xenophobic and while they like to trade and the company of other people, they don’t like non- dwarves inhabiting their lands on permanent basis so this is a big deal.

The ship and the crew will be prepared within a day so the court issues you enough dwarven money to stay in a good inn and get three good meals each and informs you of the time when you should come back to the docks. Your goal would be to escort the crew to the ruin (which was formerly called Gag Faldur for the name of its founder Faldur), protect them from monsters, show them the path to the surface and escort them back. Until then you are free to look around.

First of all, you decided to pay a visit to the city’s border. The settlement is luckily almost completely sealed from the Labyrinth with the exception of the river and a single lava tube that stretches from north- west to south- east and splits into numerous tunnels. It looks like the town has either tunneled into it or widened the passage to construct a large gate to allow for caravans to pass and for monsters to stay out. Like with Gag Faldur the entrance contains a long hall and a device that could collapse the entire roof of that hall to seal the passage if something large attacks.

This hall is set up between two large fortifications. One of them is placed into the tunnel and acts as an observation post and the first line of defense. The second one is placed behind it and it forms a firing line to shoot exactly into the exit of the trap hall. The trap is different, however. Instead of a flooding chamber it has a checkerboard pattern of covered holes in the floor that can produce a forest of giant steel spikes on command. You are still not sure what powers that mechanism but it looks menacing.

Local military is incredibly well equipped by Cenophilan standards. Every dwarf above the lowest rank wears a full plate steel armor of a dwarven design which would make them essentially invulnerable against arrows and most melee weapons when combined with their natural toughness. Most melee-oriented dwarves prefer to use long weapons which compensates for their short stature along with proportionally large shields. Dwarven marksmen are almost universally equipped with heavy crossbows that have spring steel arms. These things are late medieval technology and could reliably pierce heavy armor in some cases.

Surprisingly, some elite dwarves carry primitive matchlock muskets. They are few due to apparent lack of gunpowder production and due to their complexity and high requirements for blacksmith skill even by dwarven standards. In addition to that, fortifications contain almost a dozen of counter- siege cannons placed inside of some towers. These weapons are simple and don’t compare to Napoleonic era counterparts and they fire a rock ball the size of your fist. Apparently, these things are “new technology” (less than 40 years old) and only the richest cities can afford to supply a lot of these things with gunpowder due to the costs of saltpeter. Most other weapons are based on either huge ballista or trebuchets as high ceiling allows for their application.

After the excursion the three of you decided to take a look around the market. While you didn’t take all of your money, you still took a bag filled with dwarven coins that should allow you to purchase a bunch of stuff. In addition, the settlement is a trading town which means that there should be more choice of things you could buy here.

You have 5 units of money, you know the drill:

Materials:
>Netherweed fabric (1 point): local analogue to flax. Brownish red when not painted and rougher on touch. The material is apparently not flammable and instead melts at the temperature of a bronze furnace
>Chainmail (2 points): fabric created out of riveted steel rings. Not too great against piercing weapons but somewhat superior to just relying on gambesons. This should be enough to add a layer of chainmail to basically all of the current tiny militia with a little to spare
>Spring steel ingots (2 points): a stack of high quality 10 spring steel ingots. You expect material qualities to differ a bit but that is still spring steel, the stuff best medieval swords and crossbow arms were made out of
>Agate (3 points): a huge uncut gem. If Nike’ gave you a ring made of agate maybe this material could help you understand it better. It is pricy though…
>Marble (2 points): you can arrange a small shipment of marble blocks towards the ruin. It should be just enough to cut out the statues and paving required for the Oracle Shrine

Manufactured goods:
>Dwarven booze (1 point): several large barrels of various types of alcohol produced by the dwarves. Apparently most of it is made out of various kinds of mushrooms but at least one of them is mead produced by Kamyur which apparently causes no hangovers
>Steel knife (2 points): a short sword made out of dwarven steel that is more like a knife for your size
>Dwarven jeweler’s optics (3 points): clear glass lenses suspended on a movable harness that can be attached to the head. Its intended use is to magnify the gem to permit extremely fine work. Has maximum “zoom” of 15 times which Is massively inferior to your eyes
>Holy nation’s book of teachings (2 points): a book written in the native language of the Holies that describes their religion and how to correctly survive and build a society. Essentially their equivalent of a bible. It probably got here due to Holies having at least one surface entrance to a dwarven city upstream.
>Other? For obvious reasons I can’t list all of the shit in the market. If you want something specific like trinkets, spices, jewelry or asking a blacksmith to craft you something fast- shoot. I will estimate the price

It seems that everyone wants marble and present. I will allow for the present to be bought with no funds but we need to decide chainmail or agate. Here are the options:
>Agate and 1 unit of chainmail which is enough for 20 people and maybe supplementing Ag's armor if you want(she doesn't really need it because she is tougher than chainmail but still)
>Chainmail+ booze, we leave agate for now

You decided to arrange a delivery of marble to the ruins. After some negotiating a dwarven mason agreed to get multiple blocks of marble to the former city of Gag Faldur after the expedition returns. These blocks are perfect for becoming the material for the creation of Nike’s Oracle Shrine. When constructed and charged it will allow her to use it as an anchor to freely teleport to your village and it would also house her oracle that would function essentially like a psychic telephone. Whether or not you’ll build it now remains to be decided but you would like to have an option.

The second purchase was a monolithic piece of agate that somehow ended up in the market. The uncut gem has a rough spherical shape and it is slightly bigger than a bowling ball. It was apparently mined out somewhere below the Holy Nation territory. You decided that as Nike’ managed to “enchant” a ring made out of this gem you could use it to store psi “charge” as well. Unfortunately, you have no idea on how to actually apply the psi effect so it would probably sit in your lab for a while.

In the end, you decided against buying chainmail. While better than just a gambeson, you expect to reach the point where you can produce complex mass manufactured steel armors in the future that would be better than just chainmail. Thus, you picked up a variety of alcohols that were available. The one that interests you the most is mead made in Kamyur. From what you remember, the honey taken from a species of bugs in the underground jungle is the main component of many of the seemingly magical medicines made by the lamia tribe. You don’t expect it to cure wounds for obvious reasons but it would explain the claimed lack of hangover after consumption of this drink.

Along the way you also grabbed a few glass bottles of different alcohols sold in the area. While barrels are great, they are not a “present material” and you should always have a stash of various things you could present to your friends and coworkers in case you don’t have time to get anything appropriate. In your time, alcohol and relatively expensive chocolate were a to- go option for these things.
>>
>>3288978
While you were returning to the inn to meet up with your friends you came across a small jeweler’s shop and you curiously peeked in. The craftsman has just finished a beautiful tiara that looked like an ouroboros that was biting its own tail with its eyes being made out of rubies and all of its golden scales were beautifully detailed. You’ve had just enough money to buy it. You would be eating a couple meals less but come on, you can handle that while you won’t be finding such a masterfully crafted piece of jewelry easily. You think you know whom should you give it to but you will be waiting for an appropriate timing. In the meantime, it would be sitting wrapped up in several layers of cloth in your backpack.

Eventually you found your way into a relatively high-class inn. While not a place for nobles it still mainly housed well off merchants and thus it was clean, fancy and served good food. When you entered the place, it looked like a small party of sorts was going on. While Sig decided to directly join in and was currently arm wrestling some dwarf, Haven was quietly siting n the back sipping some drink. Looks like evening won’t be boring after all…

You decide to first of all approach Haven and ask her about her opinions on the dwarves and the Labyrinth exploration. She replied that she hasn’t actually been in a dwarven settlement before. As elves traded with dwarves even while they had an active pantheon the way to correctly talk to them was drilled into noble children along with stuff like etiquette and mathematics. Apparently, dwarves are somewhat xenophobic towards other traditions specifically while in their homes. They tolerate other people and they understand that when they are a guest, they need to behave appropriately but when inside of their own homes they prefer when you behave like them. Behaving like them would improve their disposition towards you, behaving in a way that dwarves view in a negative light would cause the opposite effect. To be fair, same could be said of most primitive societies but it is a bit more pronounced among the dorfs.

Haven says that they have a proud culture regarding military, masonry, smithing and crafts with large reverence towards skill. Every dwarf wishes to some day become the absolute best in their craft. Displaying one of your skills would increase their opinion on you. Dwarves also are very proud of their alcohol and drinking is something every adult dwarf does almost daily so outdrinking a dwarf is considered an amazing feat for an outsider. In addition, dwarves have a strong sense of honor. Insults to one’s honor are considered very serious and backing off from a challenge to one’s honor is considered either highly disrespectful or places you as unreliable and lacking which makes business deals… difficult. Other things they pay attention to are what you’d expect like valuing strength and toughness.

Regarding the Labyrinth, to be fair this is her second time with the first time being that forgotten beast expedition. She claims that it was not as dangerous as she was made to believe but she doesn’t want to jinx it as Sig would literally be dead if it was not for you deflecting that headcrab thing. She lacks any experience on the matter but she was taught that there are both light fearing monsters and light seeking monsters so having a light can be a detriment in certain cases. However, most people need some sort of light to actually see what they are doing so having some kind of permanent light source that you can turn off is usually nice. But if you are exploring on your own you can literally just ditch the light source and use your numerous senses instead. The only other thing she can tell is never feel like you’re safe outside of permanent settlements. You never know when you walk into something lethal or when something bad finds you so being always alert is a must. Not an issue for you but that’s the reason labyrinth explorer groups are usually around 20 people so that they can do defense in shifts. Half of them defends the other while they rest.
>>
>>3289537
Haven doesn’t want to get involved in the party as she is not really a “dwarf material”. She is neither strong nor capable of handling large amounts of alcohols. Thus, she is waiting for her food order and then she will probably go to bed early. In the meantime, you decided that you’d like to take part in whatever is happening here. Apparently one of the large ships that docked a couple days ago was preparing to leave so their crews and merchants are partying before they have to spend several days on a boat with no hot meals and soft beds.

Before Sigrid gets drunk and blacks out again you decided to arm wrestle her as well. She has already beaten several guys and people are starting to bet on the outcomes. Quite expectantly, people bet against you since your arm is like 20% smaller than Sig’s as you have more of a runner physique and she has more meat on her bones.

At first you tried to limit your strength to around a human level but it was a bit difficult. Sigrid easily beats a normal human one on one and your strength is set up almost logarithmically. It is easy to throw around various fractions of human power but when you get above it is difficult to cut where 5 times ends and 50 times amplification begins. Still, you try your best and attempt to mostly use skill and eventually you reach the point of equilibrium where slightly more power causes Sig to start losing and the other way around. However, you get careless or maybe you wanted her to win so she finally beats you and you spend the next 20 minutes beating random dwarves in arm wrestling to show off that you are still plenty strong.

In the meantime, you decided to try out every drink they had on the menu. When dwarves eyed you suspiciously you replied that you apparently can’t get drunk like at all and you want to find out what could work on you. After a couple of people challenged you to a drinking contest and lost outright the rest of the dwarves got into this challenge and decided to pay for your drinks in an attempt to finally reach the point at which you’d get drunk. After almost two hours of this shit you felt more nauseated than drunk and all you got out of it was a small buzz. It seems that strong liquor in doses of several liters have at least some effect. Also, dwarves know alcohol distillation which was a surprise.

After this torture you’ve picked up the unconscious body of Sigrid and wobbled your way to her room and then you are not sure what happened. It is not like you don’t remember, more like what you remember is too heavily affected by your head spinning from nausea. You are sure you’ve gotten Sig into her bed but then everything went too wobbly to see straight and eventually just faded to black…

That would be it for today. Sorry for an early pause but I feel like it is an appropriate point of the story and I am starting to get a headache. As usual, thank you for participating in my quest, I hope you enjoyed it and see you next week. Feel free to ask questions, post suggestions and discuss. The suggestions posted last time regarding symbols will be added as a special project that would be probably available after we are done with the walls.

Nice, can't wait to see where we will wake up, and we finally got marginally drunk, if not completely poisoned.
