It was a typical, monotonous work commune back home that led college dropout Erick Vanders to a fate worse than death. A traffic jam, spurred on by a strange, growing crack on an intersection, carried Erick’s concerned curiosity to the site of an equally growing crowd. Yet, just as he stared at that anomaly on the roadside, a shout and orders from arriving officers announced a gas leak in the area.

Far too late.

As Erick attempted to escape with the crowd, part of the ground gave way beneath his foot, trapping him under several portions of road asphalt. With the crowd dispersed, there was no one to help him save a single police officer named Paula Torrez. Though she succeeded in freeing him from the roadside, the gas main bursting caught them both nonetheless. Erick tried to save Paula this time, both grievously injured yet trying desperately to escape.

Another explosive burst saw to both their ends that afternoon.

Erick awoke in a strange room not long after. A normal apartment room, with several normal people around him, except for the two with the strange black suits and even stranger weapons. Stranger still was the large, ominous black sphere in the center of the room. Dante, one of the men with the suits, explained that they were all there for a game, a hunt of sorts, to eliminate aliens.

It sounded like a sick joke, until the ball played a strange tune of whimsy.

It seemed to repeat what Dante had said, displaying some creature on its screen and opening up not long afterwards to show weapons and equipment. Erick had found Paula again by this time, had both listened to Dante’s further explanation about items in the ball, and quickly chosen to listen to what he said. Putting on those same suits they were wearing, they waiting for what would come next.

Skepticism wasn’t worth too much here if their warnings were that dire.

It was long after, that they were transported to another place and where true hell on earth had begun.

<Continued>

<Continued>

With gnashing teeth and rapid gaits, those monsters descended upon them. By sheer ingenuity and quick wits, did Erick and the survivors make it out that night. And of those that would make it out of this first mission, were to be sent back again in one week by that black ball Dante called Gantz.

In the weeks that followed, they were tested again and again by horrors from beyond our planet, yet living just out of our sight. Monsters of infinite forms, deadly weaponry, and destructive capabilities beyond that of normal humans. They were alien, in both physical divergence and in the sheer unknown forms they could carry until it was far too late.

Yet, in spite of the deadly routine, Erick had not been alone in holding back these horrors. He and Paula had made it their creed to save as many of those trapped in the game as they could, and of those survivors, nearly all had become allies in their constant fight for survival. It was a bizarre bunch of people, yet he knew they could all make it if they stuck as a team.

This illusion however had begun to shatter, as Erick himself lost his life. Though many found resolve in honoring Erick's memory, others had begun expressing their own wishes for the game itself. Whether it was desperation or loss, they all had their motives for continuing through what seemed like an endless struggle.

Now, it falls to Paula Torrez to keep this group together and make sure they survive through another night. With the new revelation of other Gantz groups throughout the country and an even more terrifying theory regarding Gantz itself, Paula's life had only become more hectic in trying to piece everything together.

Whatever Gantz wanted was a mystery, but it wasn't going to stop her from bringing back Erick.

<May 1st, Tuesday 4 PM>

Dante drove the car back to his father's mansion after some slight traffic issues. He had been more than a bit livid given how many looks he had gotten on the way there, but you knew better than to speak out. You'd most certainly been there before with DC's traffic.

As the large front gates passed you, Dante drove the car into a small alcove near the far end of the front of the compound, and into what looked like a private parking garage. It wasn't enormous but you could tell that it spoke of Bowery's sheer wealth to be able to receive and store so many vehicles in his home, even if you only really spotted 3 other cars parked in the underground.

"Follow me", Dante spoke up as he parked the car, "there's an entrance to the basement we can take from here. And, thanks again for taking good care of her Paula."

As you took off your seat-belt, you replied, "Always keep my promises Dante. The ride was pretty nice, but I think I'll stick to the metro again if I'm getting anywhere for now- Oh shit...Erick's car...."

"Erick's car?" Dante asked, as he stopped next to you, "What do you-"

"Never mind," you interrupted, quickly shaking off the worry for another time, "something I remembered, but let's see about your brother for now. Funny that I'm actually looking forward speaking to him than your dad...no offense of course."

Dante chuckles a little to himself as he leads the way through that door to the basement level. It wasn't that you hated Senator Bowery, but he had gotten so damn pushy and oppressive since you met him, it was almost as if he was using you 'saving' Chris's life a few weeks back as a some sort of reason to keep you around.

You shivered in annoyance at the thought of what he could be planing, 'No thanks.'

<May 1st, Tuesday 4:05 PM>

It didn't take long for the loud music and outward cursing to betray Chris's location. You spotted him in a large, matted room full of exercise equipment and a big central mat in the center. He was working on that swordplay of his against an imaginary opponent, too focused on spotting you or Dante approaching. You wanted to say something to Dante, but he stepped forward into the room and loudly declared.

"MUSIC OFF. POWER OFF!"

A computerized voice quickly replied afterwards, <Acknowledged Lord Dante>, before the music turned off. Dante's outburst also brought Chris's attention to you both, looking somewhat annoyed yet equally curious. He quickly sheathed the black metal blade of the Gantz sword, and approached you both with that same smug smile of his.

"You could have just tapped me on the shoulder," he joked, and quickly moved towards you, "Or somewhere else if you know what I-"

"Yeah you wish", you quickly reply back, earning a coy grin from him, "anyways, Dante brought me here because something's been on your mind. And, after yesterday, I am concerned as to what it could be."

"What, you care about me now officer?" Chris sarcastically replies.

"Perhaps", you state, trying to imitate his coyness, "but you need to speak up or I can't help you."

Chris scoff mockingly, and replies, "And when did I say I wanted help? No, better yet, what did Dante go on and tell you?"

Chris gives Dante a look that reeks of suspicious or betrayal given what he's referring to. By the stern look gives Chris back, you get the feeling this probably hasn't been the first time he's done this. He turns his gaze back almost immediately though as you speak.

"Is it related to what you mentioned back in the car?"

Chris's expression changed, at first showing surprise and then a look of equal scorn towards you. You knew full well that it probably wasn't related, but it was a better option than ratting out what Dante said to you in the car. It'd be better this way, if you could get him to release the information about those first few weeks in the game.

"What are you playing at Paula?", Chris said darkly, trying to bore holes in your head with his gaze alone.

"You never told me why you did it," you continued, meeting his eyes with assertion, "and considering how you reacted on your way back home, I get the feeling it's got something to do with what Dante said about you looking more troubled."

Chris didn't reply, but only kept staring at you. You'd seen him do this before, this very silent attempt at intimidation that he seemed to have whenever he didn't know what to say. It wasn't uncommon for kids his age to do this, and you felt like he'd give in eventually if Dante hadn't spoken up.

"You said you had another run in with those assholes from St Albans again", Dante spoke up, and Chris shifted his attention to him, "it worried me so, I called her up since you were so down after you came back yesterday. Chris, come on man, it's gonna kill you to-"

"Shut up", Chris interrupts, now looking at the ground, "...just...go away."

"Chris-"

"I SAID SHUT UP!"

The shout from Chris reverberated through the gym as Chris quickly turned to Dante and tossed the sword's sheath straight at him. Dante's own reflexes caught the sheath, but you could tell he almost struggled to hold onto it. Chris frustrated expression didn't leave his face, until he turned his back to both of you.

"Goddamnit, Chris-", Dante started again, before you placed a hand on his chest.

"Give him a second", you quietly said, not taking your eyes from Chris.

Dante huffed, but did as you instructed. Chris just seemed to shift or stand where he was, not uttering any sounds beside the somewhat hard breathing you could hear from him. It kept on for almost a full minute before he quietly spoke.

"Dante, just go. I don't want to look like a bitch in front you."

"Chris...", Dante started, but he quickly understood, "fine. I'll be upstairs if you change your mind."

Dante's footsteps dissipated as he left the basement, and you now found yourself alone with Chris.

Chris stood there again for a long time, and his heavy breathing sounded like he was on the verge of another violent outburst. There were so many kids you'd seen in and out of the precinct that acted out like this to get attention. Yet something about this didn't speak of a tantrum, but a very restrained cry for help. You waited until his breathing steadied itself before you spoke up again.

"So...?"

Chris didn't reply right away, still holding onto that steady breathing again for another minute before finally relaxing his shoulders a bit.

"I wasn't the only person those fuckers bullied back in St. Alban", he starts, still refusing to look your way, "there were plenty of other people they went after. I could honestly care less about the others, except for maybe one."

"Her name was Haley, a nervous wreck that was too smart for her own good and always got in trouble with St. Alban's bitches. Only really met her due to an english course we had together, and she fine enough but she always seemed too mousy for me."

'Was she important to you?', you had desperately wanted to say, but you knew better than to interrupt him.

"It wasn't until Kyle and his assholes zeroed in on her", he continued, though he was raising his head a little at least, "something about one of their girlfriends having it out for her. They blackmailed her, her family, and made even some of the teachers start to look at her funny."

"It wasn't until I saw it firsthand, one of Kyle's fag friends almost dumping her onto traffic that I lost it. Put Kyle and one his friends in a stretcher, and told that girl to just run. That's why I did it, and that's why I got expelled from St. Albans, because I couldn't stand how fucking conceited they were over someone."

It had taken you a minute to process all of this, but it seemed to make sense with what he had mentioned before. You'd never expected a girl to be involved, though knowing Chris you assumed he probably had an ulterior motive as well. It was a strange silence to be in again before Chris spoke up again.

"There, I answered your question. You happy now Paula?"

He was trying to distance you away, but you knew better. Chris's whole bravado looked like an act from what you just learned. And it seemed it was only going to get him so far with hiding whatever was eating him inside.

<CRITICAL SUCCESS> +1 WIL

"Chris, just say it", you bluntly reply, though he's not lowering his guard, "we both know there's more to this story-

"There isn't anymore!", he bursts out, almost stamping his foot on the floor, "I did it because I hated that bastard, nothing more, nothing less!"

"It sure sounded like more when you described that girl's involvement" you deftly reply, causing Chris to fume even more, "I'll wait as long as it takes, but you have to make the choice on it. I'm only here to listen, not judge you."

Chris's stare is now almost burning into your own, but you know he's going to get tired eventually. It always happens with kids like this, in that if you keep them talking, long enough they'll turn apathetic to their own anger. Or go into a violent rage if you push too much, but you're keeping your distance if it comes to that.

"Why do you even care so much?!" he shouts at you again, nearly a full minute after your initial reasoning, "Do you even really care?! Or this is this just to make yourself feel better after Erick dying last hunt?"

His comment stung, but you didn't show it. More than anything else, you knew better than to give into his goading.

"You said yourself Chris, I'm an officer of the law. And part of that means helping people, like Erick would have wanted."

Chris's whole body tenses up at the mention of Erick's name, and you see him shift slightly. Maybe, that final bit could have been omitted, as Chris howls in rage as he charges at you. You adopt a stance to quickly suppress him until you notice something.

His charge meets you head on, and stops with a light thud as he drops you to the ground. It wasn't painful, yet you feel a heavy breath on your stomach as Chris just lies there breathing and panting heavily. It's just as you thought, he was tearing up, but you don't know from what.

"I hate you...", he starts, catching his breath, "how the fuck can you just...take it like that, and not lose it...because...I can't..."

Chris's breathing becomes a little more labored as you hear a few sobs escape from his throat. Out of respect, you let him lay there for while longer.

HOLY FUCKBALLS, BATMAN! BOLIVAR'S BACK WITH GANTZ!
>>
>>3287375
<May 1st, Tuesday 4:35 PM>

It took Chris a few minutes to recover after that. Though, you let him off of your stomach after the first two and right yourself up. After he's recovered, explains to you in detail on what he had hid from Dante and you.

The girl he spoke of, Haley, had committed suicide after the last rash of bullying and jumped off the roof on her apartment. You had actually seen something like this a while back in the news, yet it never made sense how she survived until Chris mentioned the rest of it.

That same day, Chris remembered being hit by a swerving vehicle, being sent flying out of the windshield of his Sedan, breaking his neck and dying him instantly. You guessed what happened next of course, as he continued to mention his first experience in Gantz and seeing Haley there as well.

He said he didn't think of her as anymore than just another pretty face to look at in that first hunt, but after they survived that first night, he mentioned her trying to get closer. Chris didn't seem to care too much, but he liked the attention the girl was giving him or at least you figured she wasn't just semi-stalking him at that time just for protection.

It wasn't until he mentioned the second outing though that Chris started to get angry again. How the hunt caused him to think more on things he didn't want to, and that Haley had been the cause of it all. He noted that his old leader, Joshua, had been a special pain throughout his first hunt but became downright abusive in the next. Explained why he was so apprehensive of Erick at first, but what really shone through was what he did to Haley and his team.

"I don't know if I liked her really", he finished, sighing a bit afterwards, "but I think she really cared about me a lot. I just...don't understand how you haven't lost it yet after what happened to Erick..."

"Who says I didn't?" you reply back to him, surprising him a bit, "I cried, I wept, and I mourned him but I hid it from everyone else because I didn't want them to worry anymore than they were. I wanted to kill Gantz for what it did, but I knew that if I lost focus then I would never get him back."

"I see...d-don't tell the others about this alright? They'll think I'm a pussy, considering, you know..."

You smile, and reply back, "No worries, I got your back. Now, let's head upstairs and-"

"Wait", he interjects, reaching out for you, "there's something else actually. Since I told you everything, then can you do something for me?"

"What is it?"

"Haley...isn't someone I want to remember", he states, "or anything that happened in the forest either. I don't know how else to stop thinking about it than to replace it with something else."

He takes a deep breath before speaking, "Have sex with me Paula, so I can forget everything."

+1 Trust <Chris Bowery>

You're stunned by Chris's sheer audacity to just ask for it flat out. Is he actually thinking clearly and being a horndog again or is he actually this insecure that he wants to fuck his problems away. Doesn't that memory or that whole speech about himself and that girl even mean anything to him? Or what Erick means to you?

"Hell no" you bluntly reply back, trying to hold back your astonishment, "and you'd better hope I don't remember you asking."

"Why not?" he persists, pulling a bit on your sleeve, "Didn't you say you had my back Paula? I swear I won't brag or tell anyone about it, hell, Erick doesn't have to-"

There's a twitch in your brow at the audacity of that claim from Chris, and you slowly turn to give him a serious reply.

"Excuse me? You may not want to remember the dead, but I am not forgetting Erick."

"Then what am I supposed to do?", he asks, nearly pleading in frustration, "I don't want to see her anymore dammit!"

"I'll tell you that sex isn't going to help any of that" you retort, briskly taking back your sleeve, "you either deal with your problems Chris, or you put them off til' later and end up hating yourself for it. That's just how life is."

Chris didn't say anything else after that, and you didn't wait for him to come upstairs either. Honestly, you didn't really know what to think of him besides that there was still something deeply wrong with him. It felt like you had made progress in spite of that final outburst, and now knew what had caused him to turn out as insane as Dante mentioned during his time with him in Gantz.

'Doesn't excuse his fucking behavior', you thought as you arrived to the first floor.

Dante was sitting down in the foyer sofa with a nice cup of tea on a tablestand next to him and his eyes on his phone. He turned up from it to look at you as soon as you made you way to him.

"I was getting worried after the 30 minute mark", he said somewhat concerned, "but how is he? You don't have to tell me anything if he didn't want you to, you know."

Chris had placed his trust in you not telling anyone about what happened in the forest, or anything relating to that girl Haley. However, Dante wasn't just anyone to Chris, moreover he was the only other person you knew that Chris could place trust in. Whatever reason he had for not telling his adoptive brother what had happened in full, wasn't really responsible on his part.

"Did Chris ever mention a girl named Haley to you?", you asked, and oddly enough Dante nodded in response.

"Yeah, it was some girl that Chris knew that committed suicide-" Dante responded, and made a quick jerk of realization, "wait, don't tell me Chris was involved in that?!"

"Incredibly enough, it wasn't for any malicious reason", you reply, making Dante drop his defenses a bit, "in fact, it might have been one of the few noble things he did. Even if won't admit it."

Dante's face eases up a bit as you continue to relay Chris's story, eventually moving to the study for a more private recitation. His expressions were a mixture of worry, frustration, and finally understanding by the time your reached the end of it. He only stopped you at times when he wanted clarity on the details, but he was completely receptive to it.

Dante gave one last furtive look at the ground before he took a deep breath, and spoke up, "he had only mentioned a few things about what happened before, but a lot of it seems clear now."

"Your brother is suffering Dante", you add, earning a knowing nod from him,"so much so that he's willing do anything to make it go away. He tried to ask me for sex you know."

"He what?!"

"It's nothing hasn't tried before, but this time he looked legitimately desperate. Like a twisted version of a child begging his mother for a hug."

It took a second for Dante to process the short burst of information. He only looked expectantly the coffee table in front of him, and sighed heavily before replying.

"Alright, so what do we do about it?"

"I'd find him a nice girl to shack up with again. He's obviously not taking the loss well, so maybe the company can do him some good."

"Or be a sexual assault charge waiting to happen..."

"Either way you're the one that needs to do something about your brother, Dante. He trusts you, but I'd keep your intentions subtle and this conversation on the down low."

He gives you an, 'I know', before subsiding back to the study couch. He doesn't even bother to take another drink of his tea before you continue.

"So...uh, your dad isn't here today?", you ask, trying to change the subject.

"He'll be back in like 30 minutes", Dante replies, taking a drink from his tea, "Joel is with him too as his 'aide' again, but just means we got the house to ourselves for a bit. Anything you want to do?"

"You still got that flash drive?" you ask in response, prompting Dante to reach in his side pocket.

He pulls it out with a bit of struggle, and holds it close to his face before replying, "Yeah, but I'm still wondering how she managed to get it to survive getting baked."

"Well, let's see if the stuff inside survived as well", you add, getting up off the couch, "you got a computer we can plug this in?"

"Yeah, I've got one in my room," he responds, getting up and motioning you to the entrance, "honestly though, I hope she was telling the truth and this isn't some encrypted malware deal."

You shake your head jokingly at his notion of paranoia, and follow up upstairs to his room. The door to Dante's place was a single compared to the massive double doors Chris's room had, but the inside was still bigger than anything in your apartment. Dante's room was like a small living room that was furnished in surprisingly modest fashion besides a few music posters and the occasional award on his walls.

You didn't stop admire the decor too much though, as you and Dante quickly made your way over to a large study table and desktop computer in the back of his room. The CPU looked like a road separator with how tall it was, but everything else about it was otherwise normal. Quickly booting it up, setting his password, and initializing the screen, Dante swiftly put the little flash-drive in the port.

"Moment of truth" Dante announced, as the flash drive registered, "assuming this thing doesn't have a start-up or something, I think we should get started wi-"

A small task bar flashed on screen, as Dante was just starting to look through the folders. He quickly tried to stop it on reaction, but it finished loading something too quickly for him to cancel. You approached closer to see what was happening as a new window popped up.

<UNITED FRONT - GPS TRACKER - GANTZ LIVE>

<THIS PROGRAM UTILIZES AN INTERNET CONNECTION - BE SURE TO BE CONNECTED BEFORE USING>

<NEW USER DETECTED> <REGISTER - USERNAME - PASSWORD>

"What the hell are you guys doing?"

Chris's incredulous voice almost makes you and Dante jump before turning around to see him. He's standing at the door-frame, giving you both a bored look before moving closer, and almost pushing through to see what's on the monitor.

"GPS tracker? Gantz?", he states, looking somehow more confused than both of you, "is this thing related to the hunts or something?"

"That's what we're trying to find out", you reply, getting off of the small crowd on the computer screen, "some lady from the NYC Gantz team gave it to me and said to give it to everyone. And haven't you heard of knocking Chris?"

"It's still my house, remember?", he retorts back, though there's no smug grin on his face this time, "so, you guys gonna use it or what?"

"They gave it to us for a reason", you respond, as you point to Dante's screen, "so may as well see it through. Go ahead and register Dante, it's probably too late to pull out now anyways."

He nods in response, though you can tell the last portion probably made him a little more worried given his expression. Chris on the other hand doesn't seem to drop that bored look on this face, but keeps solid eye contact on everything happening on screen. While it didn't give Dante any instructions on what it wanted for a username or password, the window quickly starts up after he finishes registering.

After a few seconds, a new message pops up.

<WELCOME - BIG NIG>

"What the fuck...?", Dante silently exclaims, and your eyes sharped at the new message as well, "That wasn't the username I typed in, it's the name Gantz...how the hell does it know that?"

He doesn't get a response as the window expands full-screen, and several other messages pop up right afterwards.

<NETWORK STATUS - OPTIMAL> <DC TEAM - REGISTERED> <INITIALIZING - GLOBAL POSITIONING NETWORK> <25%>

"DC Team?", Chris ponders, looking a bit closer at the screen, "this thing was registering us? None of this is making sense."

<50%>

"If it needs an internet connection" you interject, looking at the screen as well, "then it could be an online database or something that the New York team dug up through Gantz. How the managed to do it, I have no clue..."

<75%>

"But how does it know it was us to begin with?" Dante adds in question, "Couldn't just anyone pick up the drive and use it...? Unless you're gonna tell me New York managed to get Gantz's tech to work for them or something."

<100%>

The pondering stops as the loading screen finishes, and the screen shifts once again. The screen before you looks like a global map of the world, with several points of interest nestled in parts of the US in glowing dots. On the top portions of the screen are three buttons, labeled as <Archive>, <Manual Update>, <Help>. It doesn't take long before one of those glowing starts flashing on the eastern seaboard and another message pops up.

<YOU ARE HERE> <WELCOME TO THE UNITED FRONT TRACKING DATABASE>

There's no further questions asked as Dante takes his mouse and quickly hovers over one of the points of interest in the Western Seaboard. It pops up with a message as he hovers on it.

<LA TEAM - 10 LIVING - CURRENT HIGHEST SCORED: YANG 'THE MASTER' LIN - KAI (354 POINTS)>

"Holy shit..." you state, with eyes wide open, "it's a global positioning tracker for the Gantz teams. What the hell did New York dig up...?"

"It's a leader-board?" Chris adds, sounding almost interested, "I guess that ball really does think this is a game."

You suggest to Dante to check out the other buttons on the screen, and make sure that there's nothing you're missing with the program itself. He complies and starts out with the <Help> button to see if there's anything more to navigating this program. Chris, meanwhile, just reclines on the long afterwards looks on from there, telling you to wake him up when something exciting is happening again.

<USER INTERFACE HELP>

A brief message pops up, along with another small screen over the global map. It details what the global map is, and how to operate the user interface. Like you suspected, it is indeed a global tracker for the Gantz teams, yet it only seems to detail the maps in the US for some reason. The UI options are unhelpful to say the least, just basic computer operations even elementary-schoolers would know on how to select and click on the screen. The only really useful thing is says is the city lookup, which actually shows further details about the teams when the cities themselves are selected and not just hovered over.

"So much for help", Dante expresses, now hovering over to the next button.

<MANUAL UPDATE - PLEASE SAVE OR CANCEL ONCE COMPLETED>

Another message pops up on the screen, but the screen goes completely white and shows up a large database roster of names. The names list everyone currently alive in the team, along with a very long list of names grayed out to designate those that are dead, with Erick's own name being at the very top. Next to the name is a little drop down bar that indicates status as dead, alive, or free, as well as two large buttons that show as <Save> or <Cancel>.

"It's got to be a way to update the tracker ourselves", you assume, looking over the names, "but this seems like it could be abused to flub up numbers. You think there's a fail-safe for it?"

"Wouldn't surprise me", Dante adds, clicking on the cancel button, "though, assuming this thing is part of Gantz, the it probably updates itself."

"Just click on the last one man" Chris interjects, looking bored at the ceiling, "I want to see where we're scoring compared to those other idiots online."

You want to retort back, but knowing Chris it would be in vain. Dante himself just sighs, and presses the last button.

<ACCESSING - ARCHIVE>

Another message pops up before the screen shifts white again in what looks like a database separated with several different columns and labels. A large search bar is at the top, along with an advanced search option that has tags that detail everything from age, race, and kill count.

<GLOBAL PLAYER ARCHIVE - GANTZ LIVE>

The message gives way to the screen's title, along with a familiar list of players alive and dead on screen. They seem to be separated by teams, with several columns showing up as those tags you saw on the advanced search and portraits.

"Now we're talking", Chris says, almost bounding from the bed towards the screen, "Can it see where it ranks me compared to the other chumps?"

"Look at it on your own time Chris", you reply, earning an annoyed grunt from him, "Dante, head back to the other screen and look up some of those cities. If this thing updates itself, then it should give us our current team as well."

Dante does as instructed, exiting out of the <Archive> screen and back to the global map. Hovering over the DC area, he gets a similar message to that of the LA team's own.

<DC TEAM - 9 LIVING - CURRENT HIGHEST SCORED: CHRIS 'SAVAGE' BOWERY (134 POINTS)>

The message prompts Chris to give himself a pat on the back with a 'Yeah, that's right.', before Dante clicks on DC's point on the map. The global map enhances the image to show the DC area, along with parts of Arlington Georgetown and Alexandria there as well. It also draws up a log of names and appropriate portraits on display under a list labeled as <CURRENT>. Like you predicted, it is an updated roster of everyone on the team, with Chris at top with the current highest point value followed by Dante.

Dante then clicks on the other list, labeled <ALL TIME>, and shows a massive list with over forty names and images labeled in the very first page. Like the first page, it lists them in descending point order, with a guy named <ALEXANDER 'CPT HORNDOG' JOYS> at the very top with 378 points. Unlike the first list though, it lists their status as well as either <DEAD> or <FREE> alongside their point total.

"Wow, what a chump this guy", Chris comments, looking over the names, "over 300 points and he got killed anyways. He's gonna be crying in hell when he learns I beat his score in a few weeks."

You roll your eyes at his childish comment and motion Dante to click on another city. Dante moves the cursor to New York, and opens up a similar list, yet this time the results astound not only you but Chris himself.

<NYC TEAM - 26 LIVING - CURRENT HIGHEST SCORED: JOSEPH 'THE TITAN' LANCET (3577 POINTS)>

"Holy shit..." Chris silently exclaims, almost sounding annoyed, "Who the fuck is this guy?"

Dante is stunned as well but he opens up the main log for New York regardless. Joseph Lancet sits at the top for the <CURRENT> with the one in second place being none other than Emily Tolvert herself at 1783. You almost gawk at how impressive their roster is with some players reaching into the thousands, only made greater as Dante looks to the second list and see Joseph is at the top of that one as well.

"That's our competition, huh?" Chris states, crossing his arms, "Jesus Christ, it's gonna take some time to get that many points. How long do you think that bozo was in the game?"

"Her teammate said he was in there since 2012", you reply, earning an impressed look from Chris, "I don't know who he is but, he's on another level if he lived that long. Anyways, Dante let's-"

Your voice is cut off as a loud beep from the foyer is emitted.

"Shit, he's back", Dante hisses, and quickly goes to turn off the program, "I'll go meet him downstairs."

"I think I should get going actually" you interject, causing both of them to turn their heads, "Sorry Dante, but I need to deal with something else before I meet your father about his proposition."

"I wouldn't advise doing that Paula" Dante replies, looking a bit worried, "he's not exactly patient about what he wants."

"Yeah, he'll eat you alive if you make him wait" Chris adds, with an annoyed look on his face, "not my problem though, so what do I care though. There's a door in the back, and path that leads from there to a wooden backyard entrance."

You nod in thanks to them, and move your hand to a device on your wrist before saying, "Let the others know about the flash drives as well, since I have some business to take care of for the moment. And thanks for the ride Dante."

Activating the invisibility setting on the radar, the electrical hum of the suit dampens your vision a bit before stabilizing. Chris and Dante's gazes follow your footsteps out of the door as they head towards the entrance. You see Bowery and Joel enter the main foyer as you head for the backyard door from a waning glance. Hopefully they don't see the backyard door open to the outside on its own.

The Bowery's backyard is just as you thought, with a large stone overlook what seems like a few acres of grassland, garden and a party sized swimming pool. You follow the stone steps from the overlook towards a marbled path leading towards an small vineyard, and eventually leading to a wooden door locked with a few bar locks. Quickly openings it, you make your way out to the side street of the mansion, and back to the main road.

Quickly shedding the invisibility off of your suit, you thought on what had just transpired. The small diversion to the Bowery mansion had gone a bit differently than you'd expected. Chris's reactions certainly weren't expected, and so was the contents of the flash drive. The latter still bothered you as to what purpose the New York team would have to make that thing, assuming it was something Gantz wasn't already doing.

It wasn't really the biggest concern on your mind at the moment. As you quickly thought of easy ways to hail a cab or find the nearest metro line, your mind began to wander into other concerns you had for the week.

'If I take the Red to Gallery Place, then Walmart shouldn't be too far of a walk away. ...god, I hope the car is still there...'

The wildly optimistic thought crossed in your head as you descended the escalator into the metro line. It had been so long since you'd actually used the transit system to move through the city, the tunnel you were heading in almost seemed foreign to you. At least you still had your SmarTrip card, which at least made finding a train faster.

The station itself was much dirtier than your remember, as there were trash bins overflowing with refuse and the occasional homeless person rummaging through or sleeping on the corner. Not that you minded those people, but it certainly didn't make the station look welcoming. You didn't think much on it however, as you boarded the next train to your destination.

<May 1st, Tuesday 5:35 PM>

The trip was fairly quick, in fact it was somewhat more easier than just driving in the top side of the city if a little more cramped. Though, noted once again how many homeless people seemed to be out and about this station as well. You'd seen the occasional one in the city during your patrols before but they seemed to be in nearly every corner around here. It was depressing to see them like this, yet you couldn't think much else on them as you made your way topside again.

You'd arrived right at Chinatown's gate, and an intersection that was close to Erick's old place. You'd memorized the area well from all your visits, and so guided yourself out towards 99 H where the Walmart resided. There were some lingering thoughts of worry as you headed there, though most of them were for Erick rather than the car itself. If it turned out like what happened with Kurtis, you felt like Erick's livelihood after he returned was in danger.

'Maybe I should talk to his boss...and hope to god he's a saint at forgiving. I should find the car first though...'

Your pondering had carried you to Erick's Walmart not a few blocks away from Chinatown, yet you immediately knew something was wrong. There was a small CNN news van parked right outside of the Walmart itself, along with a police car from the West End precinct. Over the parking lot itself, you couldn't spot Erick's Sedan, yet it was a cursory glance over it more than an actual detailed search. It wasn't until you saw that a few officers entered the WalMart that you realized what may be going on.

'If he dissapeared during a shift then they would have called a first response. So this must be a secondary investigation team...'

In spite of the obvious news and police presence, civilians continued to enter the WalMart regardless. It at least told you that they hadn't cordoned off the area yet, but you could only guess as to what could have happened in there. In your mind however, it was already too late to turn back from this place, and you let out a sigh as you moved forward again.

I honestly don't have a good excuse to give to the police or Ericks boss. Fair we as Erick will need to do it later and i'm kinda worried what or who saw Erick being teleported.

But then again if the police is here and this is the second investigation they could have moved Ericks car and i recall that there was gantz guns inside it.

It probably is, remember Erick was teleported during a big active day in Wallmart and with him missing he is either guilty or a victim.

And once he comes back. Which we will do, we as players will need ro deal with it later. Going in amd trying to find out what is happening sounds like the better option because so far Ericks car being in Walmart makes him look more like a victim rather then a accomplince for whatever happend. I also doubt that the news are here because of a single missing employee.

'Gotta head to the source', you think, as you make your way into Walmart's entrance, 'and if he knows what's going on here, then I can knock out two birds with one stone.'

The only issue was that you didn't really know where the main office would be, and small tide of civilians coming and going only made things a bit more hectic. Not losing a beat however, you headed over to customer service and see if they could track down the manager for you. Though a large line of returns was going to make this difficult if you wanted to even talk to customer service.

"Excuse me, miss, do you need any help?"

A man's voice called out behind you, and you turned to see a familiar face. By the grinning demeanor, and slight latin tan, you knew exactly who this was.

"Luis?", you stated, looking at your partner holding a clipboard in his hands, "were you reassigned out again-no, wait, do you know where the manager is?."

"SShhhh, let's keep it down and talk it over in their office alright?", he warned, before motioning you to come with.

You followed him as his police uniform created a metaphoric wedge through the crowd of shoppers. He lead out back around the registers through a large set of doors labeled Administrative Offices with a large CLOSED sign stuck on it. There was a small reception desk there, but it was empty with only a few chairs and couches aligning the walls. You immediately took a seat alongside him, as he placed that clipboard to the desk.

"Yeah, they did put me on desk duty for a bit," he sighed, looking annoyed, "until the feds showed up and drove most of archives and data-management to the curb in their little search."

"They're still looking for Allie Pierce aren't they?" you asked, already knowing the probably answer though.

"And looking to find evidence incriminate the precinct in aiding a homegrown terrorist", he answered, looking somewhat more annoyed now, "personally though, I'm glad I'm not in there for that shitstorm anymore. Instead, they set me up with a temporary and had me investigate this call about an employee disappearance."

You had your suspicions he might have been sent with the investigator. It at least made reaching the manager a little easier.

"I've signed everything you want, alright", a man's voice resounded in frustration from the other end of the hall, "Just go and do your investigation, my story isn't going to change, alright?!"

"That's my queue", Luis said, giving you a wave before grabbing the clipboard, "I'll put in a word for you with Whitezilla over there. See you Paula."

You wanted to say something else before a tirade of shouts almost erupted from the hall's end, only subsiding as you heard several more footsteps disappear. Not long afterwards, a middle aged white man appeared from the hall and greeted you with what you could only guess was a friendly scowl.

"Good afternoon young lady", Sam, as you saw on his manager's nametag, greeted, "How can I and Walmart be of service today?"

"Good afternoon", you reply, as calmly as possible, "I'm looking for information about Erick Vanders. This is where he works, so I'm trying to start my search here."

Sam's face shifts to abject worry for a split second as you reveal your intentions. He cautiously replies, "I see, and what exactly is your relation to Mr. Vanders?"

"I'm Erick's girlfriend", you quickly answer, and now the look of worry lingers a lot longer, "he's been missing from home since last Saturday, and I've been looking for him since."

"Understood", he acknowledges, but then started to turn away, "but you'd honestly have a better time speaking to the police. I'm sorry but I can't-"

"I've already tried that", you lie, hopefully getting his attention again, "and this was the last place that he was before he disappeared. Please sir, this is the only other place I can think of in looking for him..."

"Young lady, I can't-", he tries to continue, but you interject again.

"I don't know where else to turn to, even if I can only get some information, I will leave and you won't hear from me again. I just need to be sure..."

You'd faked a tone before in an interrogation once, something they told you was necessary to coercing others. And thankfully, the man before you listened to the desperation in your voice, before the apparent cowardice in his head as he turned to face you again.

"Alright, if you're going to insist this much" he stated, and them motioned to the hall, "then follow me to my office. Though, you may not be happy with what you hear."

You nod, and follow him down the hallway to hopefully some answers.

<May 1st, Tuesday 6:00 PM>

"Sorry Paula, but I don't know where he could be right now", Sam sighed in defeat, "if the police investigation turns up anything, then I'll notify you. And, thank you for keeping an open mind.

Sam had recounted events of last Saturday to you down to the current time of the investigation. From what he recalled, along with some security camera footage, Erick had crashed into him after a panicked sprint from the front registers to the office. Initially, Sam thought he might have been trying to fly the coop after a bad call in the registers, but then he saw him the employee lockers, or rather his legs before they were whisked away by some strange light.

He added many times that he wasn't crazy and, though the security cameras didn't spot it, that he knew what he saw. He notified the police about what happened, and it wasn't long until some of the other employees noticed his disappearance as well. It had been an ongoing story within the store of how Erick had just disappeared, and it wasn't long before the press caught wind of it too. He had let the police know the same story, and were running an investigation on his vehicle outside to make sure there wasn't any foul play.

"Thank you Sam", you reply, giving him a handshake, "at least, it's more than what the police gave me."

Erick had weapons in a dufflebag, which he stored once in his car during a salvage operation in the pier.

He grabbed his suit in the locker, which was in the dufflebag he had in his car. The whole thing came with him when he got spotted by Sam.

'No, there's something else...'

"Actually" you interject, stopping your hand as you open the door, "there is one more thing I need to know, or rather you can help with."

You turned away from the door and faced Sam again. He was giving you a concerned look as he met your gaze.

"I need Erick's car back", you bluntly state, earning an even more surprised look from Sam, "he was one of my primary forms of transportation, so I need it to head to work normally. What's more, I think it'd be best that I have it close in case he returns home."

Sam gives a furtive look at his desk before answering, "I understand your reasoning Paula, but it's under the police's hands now. If I were to decline their investigation order now, it would only make us look even more suspicious."

It just struck you what must have been on the clipboard Luis had been carrying around. Unfortunately, it was out of your reach now unless you headed to the investigation site. What's more, it wasn't just Luis and that temporary partner but an additional investigator they must have brought in from the precinct.

"Honestly," Same continued, looking disheartened, "it'd better if you just wait until they finish their investigation. I can't say much on the matter, but know that Erick was one of the most dependable people I worked with in this store, and I doubt whatever happened was anything he could control."

The wording on his final statement was nonetheless haunting, yet you knew full well he meant it from a judgement of Erick's. It sounded throughout that whole conversation that he really did care about his well being. It wasn't of any help though, but you thanked him nonetheless and left the Walmart offices.

<May 1st, Tuesday 6:20 PM>

You made your way out of Walmart a few seconds later, quickly spotting an ABC News crew moving in the direction of the Administrative Office. You would have prayed for Sam's sanity to stay intact with those people, but you knew it was the news crew that you should have prayed for instead. Not that you did, of course.

As you moved out to the parking lot, you spotted the uniformed forms of Luis and another officer arguing with a tall gentleman with latex gloves on hand. They were standing next to a beat up sedan, the parking lot of which had been segmented off with tape and orange flags. If Sam's words rang true, then it might be a week or more before the investigation would be done here.

'Temporary partner is Andrew Collins, huh. Must be a seniority thing if they put Luis with a rookie again. The investigator though...don't recognize him.'

Your thoughts regarding the investigator and the investigation itself would only be thoughts however. You knew that you had done everything you could, and even if you hadn't gotten Erick's car back you at least learned that it would still be here by the time he got back. What Sam spoke of made you worried however, as his witnessing of Erick's transport to the Gantz room may make him a potential target as well as anyone that was investigating that Walmart.

'It did it for Allie', you thought, walking down towards Chinatown again, 'though, then again, she knew much more than what Sam had seen...I sure hope I'm right...'

On top of this, this investigation with the police had you somewhat more worried about his and your own well being after the mission. Any investigator could say correlation does not prove causation, but considering the current record both Erick and yourself had gotten in the precinct, it could only spell more complications for the future. If Rick's paranoid streak after Allie disappeared from the precinct right before her supposed interview, you could only hope the FBI's investigation would at least give him something else to worry about.

'If anything, it'll cause him to lose his cool again', you chuckled in your head, heading towards the metro's escalators again, 'worst case scenario...Rick paints an even bigger sight on Erick and then me...'

These thoughts were depressing to think of, yet you knew they were all possible. As you crossed into the next train back home, or the closest station to it, you made a mental notes to steel yourself for what was ahead. If the next hunt didn't kill you of course.

<May 1st, Tuesday 6:50 PM>

In the rush of today, you had actually forgotten to get some food for lunch. What happened at Walmart had drained part of your mental stamina, and thus allowed the hunger in the back of your mind to set in again. So you stopped a Subway near your apartment before entering the building. As you reached your door with your foot-long Italian club, you noticed a manilla envelope wedged into your door.

'Luis's letter' you thought, grabbing it out of the door, 'could use some reading material with my meal I suppose.'

After heading inside, getting yourself some tea, and peeling off the sandwich's wrapper, you opened the envelope on the table and revealed some well needed info. The report was a summary of Marcus Holding's police record since 2001, the date he was reported to have started working for the Triads in New York. Just like Luis had said over the phone, it read like a bucket list for a career criminal.

And that's when you saw something both intriguing and disturbing. There was a report of him being confirmed dead by the NYPD in 2009 in a drug bust shootout. Yet, the next month he was spotted in another Triad meeting in Manhattan, this time holding a higher rank than before. There was no other further pattern to correlate this to however, but you knew this couldn't be a coincidence.

You would have imagined that Gantz would be a perfect world for criminal element to thrive in, but you didn't expect something like this. A hitman operating with technology far advanced than any military or police force was nigh unstoppable in this current state. Granted, this assumption was based on pure speculation on what you knew about Gantz, but if Marcus Holdings really was involved with Gantz then you had more than a couple of ways of finding out.

You quickly dug out your laptop and zeroed in on your own miniature hard-drive to initialize Gantz's Global Database and see if Marcus was involved with Gantz. The process was still relatively the same as what happened with Dante's computer, except that after the program initialized out of the mini-hard drive, it already listed you as registered and only allowed for a log in key. After a swift text to Dante for the username and password, BeatKingDante and DCGantz1999 respectively, you set the login and was greeted with the inevitable loading screen.

Just like Dante's own log-in, it displayed your Gantz name, Paula 'APB' Torrez, on the screen before loading up the Global Map. You didn't waste further time as you quickly made your way to the database and set about finding Marcus's name. The search yielded more than 50 results, yet after narrowing it down to New York alone, you quickly compared the profile images of the remaining names with the profile photograph Luis had included in his letter.

"Bingo."

There was a match with an individual in New York under the same name and one of Gantz's stupid surnames labeling him 'White Bullet'. His arrival time listed in 2016 in the database also correlated to his confirmed death date, only making you more sure of what you were looking at. The only questions were now two-fold: Where was he and what would you do about it now that you had the information?

There was no way you could go to the police with the story regarding Gantz, what's more you have no idea how to implicate him if the Triads are by his side. There was also the option of just dealing with him decisively, yet you weren't sure if you were ready to take a life on the outside like this. Even the option itself was in direct violation to your creed as a police officer, yet you knew that something had to be done. So you reasoned, that maybe it should be someone else that decides what to do about Marcus.

<May 1st, Tuesday 7:00 PM>

After a few more dead rings, you decided to just leave Yukino a message only telling her to call you back. It had been 3 calls made, but she hadn't answered. The paranoid side of you was somewhat worried but you hoped that her phone had just run out of batteries. Though, even with the information you had on file, you had no idea how you would track this guy down.

'Well...at least we know that he did it. But...now what?'

OOC: Last post of the night, I'll make an announcement after this one.
>>
>>3295520
Claire and Silvia were screw ups in your eyes. Immature for their age, and completely focused on the wrong things to the point of even following Chris's better judgement during the last mission. What's more, they were more than partly to blame for Erick's current missing status. Yet, in spite of what you felt, you knew that they were an asset that you needed to have on the team if you wanted to reach your goal.

Reaching out for Claire's number you quickly dialed in, and hoped that they were ready for a good workout tonight.

"Hello, Paula,", Claire's voice greets you over the cellphone, "we were actually about to call you about Dante. He dropped off a pair of cookies with harddrives in them and gave us a username and password in text, you know what that's about?"

"Yeah, it's related to Gantz," you answer vaguely, and quickly reassess your options here, "he should have given you instructions on how to use them as well. But if he didn't, do you guys want to meet up in person for the information? We can knock out that hand to hand training you guys wanted in the process."

"Well...there was a place Silvia found where we can do that" Claire responded, "Alright, we'll meet up with you tomorrow at 7:30 PM. We'll bring our suits as well."

"Thank you, see you there", you reply, and quickly add, "also, do you know if Tanjeet is back at the dorms?"

Claire takes a pause, and replies with a little bit of concern, "Well, he is but he hasn't left his dorm room since he came back. We tried to talk to him, but he keeps mumbling something to himself right behind his door."

'What the hell...?', you think, before replying back, "Alright, I'll call him up tomorrow and see if he's alright. Anyways, just send me the address and I'll see you both there tomorrow. And make sure those hard drives are in a safe place."

There's an, 'OK', of acknowledgement from Claire before she finishes the call. Throughout all of this, you decided to omit the information regarding Marcus, but there was something that was bothering you about it. You returned back to the laptop and looked up his score.

<MARCUS 'WHITE BULLET' HOLDINGS - SCORE: (491 POINTS)>

"Figured this fucker would be good", you say in annoyance, "only makes apprehending him with his damn equipment all the worse..."

A bit of your optimism in finding and apprehending this guy was eroding. If he was playing the game for fun, like what Chris was doing, there was no telling what kind of equipment Gantz could have awarded him for that many points. Just Chris's new weapon alone was impossibly powerful and he mentioned it was the first thing Gantz gave you if you got to that threshold. Yet at the same time, you knew that if he wasn't stopped then there was no telling how many more people would die at his hands.

'I don't know how we'll do it', you think, trying to come up with a plan, 'but it's up to Yukino's decision now...'

OOC: Last update for the weekend guys.

Here's how scheduling is going to work:

I'll run smaller sessions in the weekdays again, usually after 6 PM EST so we don't get burnt out, and return to full day sessions on weekends like normal usually starting at 10:00 AM EST.

Remember to us the Last Reply drop down selection on the catalog once this inevitably gets put out of the first page to find it easier. I'll also post updates on the /qst/ discord so no one gets lost or misses an update during the weekdays.

Anyways, thank you for having me back /qst/, and I'll make sure to see this quest through to the end to my players.

Have a good evening fellas.

You figured that in waiting for Yukino's response and the training with the twins tomorrow, there wasn't much else to do at the moment. You weren't even going to consider going after Marcus alone as you were. There was the thought of finishing up your core before the mission itself however. Grabbing your keys, wallet, workout bottle, and suit, you made your way to Metro Center again.

<May 1st, Tuesday 7:25 PM>

Crunch's signature sign and logo greeted you as you reached the shopping center where it was located. It was somewhat rewarding to get a nice run to the train and then cooling down on your way here to serve as a warm up. You'd never considered it before since you always walked to HQ's fitness center, but maybe you'd start using the car less and less after Erick got back for this similar rush.

As you passed through Crunch's doors, and scanned in your membership card, you quickly made your way back to inclined benches to get started on your core again. Giving yourself a final swig of water to slosh in your mouth before the workout, you made a mental checklist of all other workout techniques that could help your core out.

'Routine does get boring,' you thought as you placed yourself on the bench, 'maybe I'll do raises today as well.'

<BARE SUCCESS> +1 DEF
<May 1st, Tuesday 9:30 PM>

There was something about varying up your routine that made it go much faster, yet harder today. Your normal core workout was usually just segmented on your upper lift and crunches, but these new techniques were some what more effective. Leg lifts, raises and planks all used more of your lower body, but felt more tough as you plowed through the hours at the gym.

That same technique on the Gantz suit worked previously, as you had steadied your breathing more to prevent it from activating mid-exercise. It didn't lessen the strain on your muscles anyways, as you felt a heavy burn in your sides and center, sweating up a storm inside of the advanced alien suit. You had gotten so wrapped up in your cool down, that you actually forgot closing time for the gym was almost on.

Quickly grabbing a complimentary gym towel, and whatever spare water you still had, washed yourself up a bit before heading out. You felt that it really made a difference this time, as you gave your stomach a small nudge. The notable creases of musculature had begun reassembling themselves within, and your pack was looking much more defined now.

'Erick's going to be so jealous when he gets back.'

<May 1st, Tuesday 9:50 PM>

You returned home with a light trot, and quickly made your way to the shower to wash off. You would need to remind yourself to put that suit in the washer after tomorrow's venture with the twins. Hopefully the water didn't affect any of the electronics, but considering it was advanced alien technology you doubted it would really do much against it. As you dried yourself from your shower, your phone's vibration buzzed a text had arrived. Finishing up your drying, you picked it up and found it was Yukino's.

<Hey Paula, I got your message. I'm free to talk now if you wish. My dad's away for the night, so it'll be fine.>

You headed out of the shower and slipped on your night garments before giving Yukino a call.

There were a few rings, before you heard a voice on the other end, "Hey Paula, just got done with some homework. I didn't call right away since my dad was still around and all."

"No that's fine Yukino", you reply, and then heading for the kitchen, "anyways, I just needed an answer from you is all."

"Sure, but what's the question?"

"To start off, remember how you got in the Gantz, right?"

"Y-yeah, I hesitated to jump...and then I felt a push before I fell. Did Erick tell you?"

"He told me enough really, but the point is, we found the person that did it. He's a mob hitman, that also has ties to Gantz, and I wanted to ask you what we should do about him, since you were his victim."

Yukino didn't give you an answer right away, instead there was dead silence on the other end. You couldn't even hear breathing, but after a full minute, she spoke.

"I want to know why he did it, or why he was there. Please catch him, but don't do anything too dangerous, ok?"

"Of course", you reply, certainty in your voice, "we'll take care of ourselves Yukino. We'll catch him, don't you worry."

"Thank you Paula", she acknowledges, before letting out a yawn, "I'll head to bed now though. Got tired after school, goodnight."

You give her a 'Goodnight' on your own part before cutting off the call. You honestly didn't know what to expect anymore with Yukino, considering the events last weekend. And it made you very happy to know she had decided something that mature. Had the case been to kill him however, you wouldn't have hesitated yourself given what this man had done prior as well.

"It's a headache for another day" you muttered to yourself, placing the phone on your nightstand. A part of your officer's code stated that you should turn the man in, yet you knew full well someone with access to the kind of tech he had could never really be turned in. In fact, you doubt he would ever really be caught by anyone except your own team.

'We need to be prepared', you thought, as you quickly got out of bed and headed to the kitchen. Quickly pulling up your laptop, with the flash-drive still plugged in, you opened up the Gantz LIVE program, and got to searching on New York. Even if there was something to give you at least the slightest advantage, you would try to find it in the database.

<May 1st, Tuesday 11:00 PM>

In the last hour and a half, you had compiled a large amount of data regarding the New York's Gantz team. Of the content you dug up however, you only took the most important bits. Roster itself was something almost palling compared to your own team. These were players with either years of being in the game or just a sheer number of points against your own. Getting to 100 always seemed like an impossibility, yet these people almost made it look easy.

Joseph Lancet also seemed like their oldest member currently alive, yet he wasn't the first as you quickly found out. A teenager by the name of Daniel Wallace, who was brought in February of 2012, yet had died in the game a week right afterwards. The names following him seemed to have suffered the same fate. While Joseph's case in November was the oldest still alive, it certainly wasn't the first instance.

"Assuming all the other balls started at the same time", you mutter to yourself, eliciting a small yawn, "then this thing has been ongoing for more than five years now...just what the hell are these people to have lived through so much that long."

You weren't one for shallow comparisons, but the sheer longevity of New York compared to DC was staggering. The oldest record player still here was Chris, and even he had died once before with a fraction of what these people were doing. While it only made the odds of apprehending Marcus more difficult in your mind, it also brought up another possible option.

'Yukino just wants answers', you think, turning off the PC, 'so, we just need to find him, and ask why and what he did it.'

It had struck you that in your search for more information for New York's Gantz team and some answers behind Gantz itself, you had neglected to find out more about Marcus Holdings. Quickly opening up the laptop back up, you started back on information for Holdings. Yet, after an hour came and went, you realized that the only real things you were missing on him were a motive and his current location; as everything was either in Luis's notes or Gantz LIVE.

There were a few ways you thought of acquiring this information however. There was the easy option of just looking him up through that license plate, though you would have to sneak into a police computer to do that considering you were off duty. Then there was that Triad contact you never met up with, yet you had no clue if he even knew Holdin's location or if he would even rat on a high-ranking member. Finally, there was Emily Tolvert, who could only hope that she knew something about Holdings or where he was just from proxy.

None of these options were a sure fire way of getting to him, but you knew it was better than trying to investigate further on your current resources in the middle of the night. If anything, the slight detour had given you ideas on how to figure it out tomorrow. Turning off the PC for good, you went to bed with a bit more clarity on how to proceed on this case. The only thing you needed was a plan and some volunteers.

<May 2nd, Wednesday 10:00 AM>

You'd woken up a little groggy from last night, perhaps it was the lack of dinner or the rush of information you had that made you feel more sluggish this morning. Thankfully, there were some eggs and sausage remaining in the fridge this morning for some quick breakfast, even some potatoes Erick had bought for a casserole. Even more fortunate that you actually knew your way a bit better around the kitchen now, considering your initial foray into the art of cooking with Erick and Yukino.

After finishing up your meal and freshening up, you were headed for the door when a text rang through your phone. Opening it up, it revealed a name you were familiar with yet didn't wish to associated more than necessary.

<I'm heading to a final hearing regarding the increase of security project I proposed to you previously Paula. If I don't hear an answer from you by Friday, I will assume that you won't take part in on it. Please, at least give me an answer before then, or I'll be quite disappointed in you.>

Senator Arnold Bowery's text read like an backhanded request, yet you knew that there was only so much time he was going to wait for your answer. Considering he wanted your father's involvement in this, you were somewhat hesitant regardless to even respond. Storing the message, you quickly made your way to the door and far away from any thoughts of political wrangling.

OOC: He wants to increase public awareness, or fan spreading flames, of the incidents that had been ocurring to garner support for increasing security in DC. As a refresher, Senator Bowery is a staunch supporter of authoritative government and he believes heightened security will prevent further incidents from occurring.

I thought it just dropped it once the aliens started killing people in public or after the oni did that.

I always though it dropped it because after the attacl of the budist temple the governament started to increase security measures which made hard to hide the movement of the aliens.

<May 2nd, Wednesday 10:15 AM>

You had called up Tanjeet's cellphone nearly five times since you left home, yet all calls went to voice mail. You then decided to call up Allie and Kurtis to make sure he had made it home alright, but they reassured you that he was fine when they brought him back. It was cause for worry for sure, but at least you knew where he was and had corroborated the twin's story. Getting to Tanjeet's dorm however had become all the more troublesome as an occurrence on the metro line stopped your progress.

Several police officers had cordoned off the area of entry to Gallery Place and two ambulances were standing by behind them. You could only really guess what for, since entry or questions as to why the station had been sealed off weren't being given at the moment. Quietly cursing the bad timing, you took a jogging detour out of Chinatown to phone in a cab.

<May 2nd, Wednesday 11:00 AM>

Thankfully, the lunch rush hadn't quite hit the cabbies yet as one of Ethiopian descent had hastened you in. While your concern with Tanjeet was still at your forefront in the drive, the issue with the train closing was brought to the forefront by your cabbie's accent. There had apparently been a disappearance in a metro station early in the morning, a young college coupled had been assaulted by a figure during the first train's outing. While the man was found, injured yet alive, the woman had yet to turn up.

Security camera footage had depicted a struggle, but nothing much else before the cameras reset that morning. Naturally, you assumed it might have been at Gallery Place given the police and emergency vehicles yet would that really be a reason to cordon off the station itself? You didn't ponder it with your cabbie for much longer as GW's dorms approached your vision.

West Hall was significantly smaller than the Twins's almost hotel-like building in Thurston, yet it also seemed more new comparatively speaking. The newer look only seemed to be accented by the interior, as the receptionist area seemed too clean for its own good. After asking for entrance to the dorms, you recieved a somewhat worried response from the receptionist.

"Umm...", the short blonde stammered, trying to look away from you, "I can't let you in without his authorization. But, I can head down there with you if you want to check up on him."

"Fine", you answer back, a bit more worried now, "just please, take me there."

The blonde receptionist didn't question further, as the security officer let you both through down the long hall of doors. Upon reaching room 1042, the receptionist tapped on the door and asked if Tanjeet was in. There came no reply, and she pressed her ear to the door to hear any signs of life.

Quickly turning away from it, she faced you and stated, "he's in there, but..he's unresponsive at the moment. I can't force entry unless he's in legitimate danger though..."

You give the door one more look, before sighing and replying back, "it's fine, I'll come back later. I was just checking up on how he was, but at least I know he's still alive."

The receptionist nods in understanding, as she guides you back to hall entrance. After letting the security officer know you didn't take or leave anything in the dorm, which made you wonder if other universities were this stringent about security, you headed out of the doors. Keeping the security cameras in view, you quickly made your way out of the dorm's area and headed towards the nearest shop.

You didn't have to look too long, as there was a Starbucks within walking distance of the campus ground. Heading to their restroom, you thought up a plan of getting in through more unconventional means. You had noted Tanjeet's dorm room was on the first floor, and given the layout of the hall it was also facing a roadway. You knew that most homes or apartments with views like that had a window access directly out, which you would hope wouldn't be closed.

'If it is', you thought, as the crackling cloak of the Gantz radar enveloped your suit, 'then I'll spot him the money for the repairs.'

<May 2nd, Wednesday 11:15 AM>

Sneaking into West Hall with the cloak was simple enough with the suit and cloak on. While you were more than adept at climbing fences on your own, the extra strength of the suit made the tall steel and iron a joke. Though you hadn't really memorized the place where Tanjeet's room was, it didn't take you too long to find it as it seemed to be the only one with the curtains open. Peering inside, you spotted him on his bed as well as the mess of dirty clothing, books and other items strewn across the floor.

You wondered for a moment if this was normal for Tanjeet, but given his current circumstances of laying motionless, you weren't going to take any chances. You gave a few taps on Tanjeet's window, yet once again he just seemed to lay there without measuring a response besides his rising chest for breath. There was no more time to waste, as you pressed up on the outside window, ripping through the wire messing and opening up the window from the outside. The suit's strength made this a cakewalk as well, but you were also thankful that there wasn't lock on it either.

"Tanjeet", you said, making your way inside, "you alright there? You had us a little scared when you weren't responding."

Though there was no vocal answer from him, his head turned to face you at least, and you immediately knew something was off. He had two dark spots under his eyes, along with several dried rivulets of moisture running down to his cheeks. Those very cheeks looked a little pale as well, and you noticed that there was a greasy shine on his hair as well. You didn't know if Allie and Kurtis were lying if this is how he came back alright, but you nonetheless approached him.

'Please let me be wrong...'

Stepping over the pile of clothes and other items, you took a more careful analysis of Tanjeet as you approached, decloaking as soon as you were away from the window. Along with the dried moisture on his cheeks, his eyes appeared bloodshot and not really blinking all that much as he looked at you. His breathing was steady but it was so long and drawn out you were wondering how he was managing to still be awake as it almost sounded like silent snoring.

"Tanjeet, you need some water?", you asked, only getting a small nod on his head, "hold on, I'll get you something. You got any cups around here...?"

You didn't have to search long as you almost stepped over a small GW mug covered slightly by several sheets of paper. Grabbing it off the ground, you headed to the closest sink, and poured it to the brim. Bringing it back to Tanjeet, you kneeled close to his bed and place it near his mouth with both hands.

A slow hand from Tanjeet took it from your own, and almost poured it over his mouth. He didn't even bother sitting up, as he downed the whole mug in one gone. He went to give it back to you, when he crunched up in a fit of coughing, probably choking on all that water he just took in. He almost fell out of his bed amidst his coughing but you held him up.

"F-FUCK!!", Tanjeet shouted, straining his throat further after his coughing fit, "it was all right there! Maria was right there, and I just wanted to see her a little better Paula!"

You were somewhat confused and taken aback by his comment. It almost sounded like, he wanted to see Maria but something stopped him...

"Tanjeet, tell me you didn't" you started, as he took labored breaths, "right? Please tell me you didn't try to kill yourself."

"Yeah, I guess you could say that", Tanjeet replied, way too nonchalantly for your worries, "there's this belief right, that those deprived of sleep, food and water begin to take spiritual guidance from the dead. And I almost saw her, right there beside me on this bed."

He patted the place next to himself, almost like an expectant parent.

"Been trying to do this since I got back" Tanjeet continued, "reciting some sutras my dad taught me to keep my concentration. Of course, I was getting thirsty as you were coming in, but I started to see her face again...she was so beautiful..."

There were things you were expecting coming here in the worst case scenario. A razorblade, a rope and noose, or an empty sleeping pill jar on the floor, but this almost seemed more disturbing. Whatever insanity was gripping Tanjeet's mind right now, it was turning him unrecognizable to you. The optimism and curious intellect you'd seen in him before was being effaced for something desperate and irrational.

"Anyways, thanks for the water, and the slight breeze but I have to get back to my ritual."

Tanjeet's normally calm and thoughtful face had been warped into some delusional and unsteady version of itself. That normally happy and optimistic smile now turned into an almost self-indulgent grin. It was unsightly to you, but it would have been more unsightly to him if he even had any sense left to see it. As Tanjeet stretched out back on his bed, you calmly placed the mug back on his nightstand, got up, and just stood there.

Tanjeet took notice your motionless stance after a second of his own unmoving guise. His eyes flicked to look at your own, almost scowling in both pity and disappointment back to him.

"Paula...I can't initiate it if you're going to stand there and block my concentration. Now, please-"

"No," you interrupted, and continued right before he could reply, "I'm not letting you do this to yourself."

"Paula, what are you talking about-"

"Cut the bullshit, right now Tanjeet", you command, eliciting a blink from him, "you're studying to be a damn doctor and you think you're having visions of Maria through this...this...whatever it is you're doing?"

Tanjeet just smiles a little, almost like an understanding smile, yet his brows remain low on his face. He shifts on his bed, actually sitting up on the bedside to face you.

"What, you think I should't have faith?", he questions in an expectant tone, "I shouldn't expand my mindset to something new? Surely, you must know that there's many ways to seek answers."

Your stern look doesnt fade, instead it dips to a scowl as you reply back, "I don't care what kind of excuse you make for it here, you're not thinking clearly. You're a man of science, reason, and, as far as I know, you're not going to drown yourself in this self-deprecating spiral just because everything isn't going well for you."

"Then what can I do Paula?" he questions again, as his smile begins to fade, "if I return to reason, then everything will just point back to me again. It's not my fault, none of this is my fault damnit!"

"Everything, everything for the last three days and now has returned back to me for something I know I can't change! Gantz, the police, Maria's brothers, the goddamn test...I just, don't want to see it anymore..."

"But you want to see her, right?"

Tanjeet almost flinched as you said that, but you continued seeing his weak point, "You know there's only one way to do that, and its through Gantz, which is something you CAN control."

"But...how can I?", he weakly retorts, "I'm always dead last on this points, and all I ever seem to do is just patch you guys up..."

"Then we'll just have to work on that after lunch", you reply, moving towards the window and recloaking, "I'm teaching the twins some hand-to-hand tonight, and I'd like for you to join."

"I'll meet you by the dorm's doors, your choice of food, but don't make me wait too long, alright?"

You didn't get a reply from Tanjeet as you exited out, but you could swear you saw him clench his fists from the reflection on the window. This time, you hoped you were right.

<May 2nd, Wednesday 11:35 AM>

You were getting worried after 15 minutes had passed as you waited out by Tanjeet. It shouldn't have taken him that long to get dressed, but you decided to give him another five minutes. He only needed that time it seemed, as he arrived to the front with a new shirt, jeans, and his hair washed out. He only greeted you, and asked for some Chipotle nearby to eat.

The walk there was eerily quiet, with him only really speaking to say excuse me to the occasional passerby on the street. Even after you reached the restaurant, ordered your food, it didn't seem like Tanjeet was even taking too much notice of your presence here. It wasn't until you sat down to eat, that he finally spoke up.

"I didn't do this for me, coming out here..."

Swallowing the rice and steak in your mouth, you reply, "Then why did you do it?".

He doesn't reply immediately, only taking another bite of his food before drawing a long sigh after swallowing. He still has that haggard, delirious look on his face when you first spotted him. The only difference being that he looks in more pain than before.

"You know why I'm studying medicine Paula?" he finally answers, and continues before you can respond, "it's because I've always had trouble saying no to people."

"From my parents, my teachers, to the team now, I've always been under someone's influence. Doesn't help that I'm actually good at what they suggest, so much so that I honestly embraced it now."

It almost sounded like he was regretting being here, but you couldn't tell if it was the restaurant or DC itself. Though, you had to note that Tanjeet had been such a good support for the team because he followed orders so well. Maybe, it was finally getting to him what Chris had said that night.

"The same way I embraced Maria last week," he went on, only stopping to eat and swallow, "and I went along with her suggestion of sex after studying. I don't know if she genuinely liked me, but I didn't care."

"I didn't care that I could fail my final the next day, or that I could have committed a mistake in my life. I didn't want to think anymore, or be responsible for anything anymore with her around."

"W-wait, what are you getting at with this?" you ask, somewhat confused, "Don't you care about saving people Tanjeet?"

Tanjeet briefly stops to chew, and probably contemplate an answer before saying, "I do care Paula, but at the same time I wanted to replicate that same feeling I had with Maria back in my room and Kurtis's house. To just fade away for a few days, and not care about responsibility like she and the twins did..."

You couldn't tell if Tanjeet was acting or saying something like this under that delusional persona you saw back in his room, or if this really were his true feelings. Whatever it was, it was troubling to think he was that close to completely losing it, especially if pressure was placed on him from prior influence.

"As a person, I shouldn't tell you what you should or shouldn't do Tanjeet", you state, finishing the last of your rice, "but I know that as a friend, I have my own responsibility to prevent you from doing something you'll regret."

Tanjeet's eyes narrowed, no doubt thinking about what you had said. He looked like he was in even more pain now, but he quickly suppressed it with another deep breath.

"Alright, you win Paula", he replied, sounding almost emotionless as he did "I'll meet you tonight with the twins for that training. I'll just catch a ride with them since they still have Maria's SUV."

He got up as he finished saying that, and threw away the trash before heading to the doors almost as silently as you had entered.

<May 2nd, Wednesday 12:00 PM>

There was a twinge in your side that told you to head after him, yet you repressed it as quickly as it came up. You knew that Tanjeet was going to need some time to himself to process the last hour or so, especially if he was still coming to terms with Maria being gone. You'd at least kept him from that self-destructive path he was heading in for the moment. Yet, you knew that he'd need some more help later on.

Seeing him pass the restaurant towards his dorm, you stood up, threw away your garbage and headed for the door yourself. You didn't know this area quite well, so you confided on some of the other students nearby on where to find Thurston Hall. You couldn't be there at all times for Tanjeet unfortunately, and you'd need help in breaking him out of his stupor.

<May 2nd, Wednesday 12:30 PM>

Calling a cab would have been unnecessary since it was only five or so blocks, but considering how many people there seemed to be around it was a little disorienting. You'd memorized most of DC from your year of patrols but traveling it on foot was a little different. It didn't matter too much though, as you reached Thurston Hall before too long and called up the twins.

"Paula?" Claire voice rang out, though muffled, "hey, what's going on? We were in the middle of lunch you know..."

"Sorry but this is very important", you reply, taking a seat in the dorm's lobby, "I need you both to come down and let me in. It involves Tanjeet, and I felt like you both know this in person."

"W-wait, what about Tanjeet?!" you hear Silvia's voice shout over the speaker, before Claire yells back at her, "Stop yelling, we can both hear you!"

You resisted the urge to sigh annoyance, and instead responded with, "Just tell them to let me in, I'll tell you inside."

There was a united sound of agreement on their end before they cut off the call.

<May 2nd, Wednesday 12:45 PM>

After Claire and Silvia arrived down to the lobby to let you in, you began explaining last hour's events. They interrupted you often, asking questions about why Tanjeet had done it or if you had gotten through to him. You only responded with 'let me finish' for most of their questions. After everything was said and done, Silvia and Claire were looking quite uncomfortable on the couch across from you.

"So...he felt that trapped.." Claire stated, the dour look on her face not fading, "all this time...he just wanted to live a little bit...without the pressure."

"It's like he wanted to follow Maria like we did", Silvia continued, looking just as dour, "...I don't like this...it feels awful...like...we've been doing this whole time."

You gave them a sympathetic look, not to cheer them up but to get them to get them in the right mindset, before you said, "Now, more than ever, he's going to need friends. Give him him a ride to training site tonight, he's coming too."

They both nodded in agreement.

There was a sense of satisfaction you had in knowing you had these two backing you up now. You had yet to forgive them for what their point stealing last hunt, but they were certainly trying to get your approval again. Whether that was because they felt guilt or because they were afraid of you however, was something you couldn't tell. Of course, you figured there'd be an indirect way of proving this.

"Before I go, something's been bothering me", you start, earning a confused look from both of them, "when we came into the room, most of us were strangers to each other. We didn't know who to trust or rely on, yet the three of you seemed inseparable."

"I know I shouldn't be so blunt in asking, but who exactly was Maria to you two?"

Silvia almost looked away as you asked the question, while Claire was thinking of a way to respond. They returned their gaze to you after a few moments, and somehow failing a bit in their synchronicity.

"We-" "We-"

The awkward stop made Silvia look away for a moment, and Claire quickly continued.

"We've known Maria since high school, but she only really became our friend since senior year. Before then, she was-"

"We didn't really know who she was", Silvia interrupts, "but we started hanging out, going to parties, and getting into law school because of her."

"Yeah, she's more or less the reason we're here now", Claire adds, with a pained smile, "actually kind of yelled at us because of it. Said we should do what we wanted instead of...following the crowd."

"Daddy was really happy about the news though, even said he'd pay for the loans if we actually graduated in the first four years."

You'd honestly never thought too highly of these two, but to go that far just to hanging out with your friend sounded absurd. It was strange to think that these two had such dedication to Maria considering they only knew her for a year, yet you knew full well how dedication could be built up.

"Besides that though, Maria was always smarter, prettier..."Silvia trails off, and Claire finishes the thought for her, "she was someone we looked up to a lot. And ever since the police left, we've been getting serious in bringing her back."

"And now, we have to help Tanjeet", you reiterate, "if the investigation against him came up blank, then we need to stay up to date on our training to get Maria back next hunt."

"RIGHT!"

The both repeated that last bit in unison, before a knock on the door interrupted the light festivities.

"Hello, sorry but we're here for room detail", a voice from the outside spoke, "if you're going to be leaving for summer break, we'll need all guests out while we do our pre-vacancy inspection."

"ONE SECOND!" Silvia shouts back, and then getting up, "sorry Paula, I didn't think they'd be here this quickly. We'll see you out before they start."

"We're leaving back home for Fairfax at the end of the week, but we'll be close enough we can come for the training sessions."

"Since the semester's over, we can probably meet up more often" Claire continued, "well, unless daddy makes us take a summer job like next year."

"Maria totally missed her finals though..." Silvia adds worriedly, "oh god...this whole game is going to ruin our lives even if we're not dead..."

There was another knock on the door, along with a more exasperated repeat of the prior message from the people outside.

"We can save the commentary for later tonight" you quickly state, "right, I need to finish up an investigation for Yukino."

"Wait, was it that man at the mall?" Claire interjects, as you head for the door, "Because, we can help you if-"

"Not yet", you reply, reaching for the door-handle, "but I'll let you know when I find out where he is. Help Tanjeet for now, and see you guys later."

The repeat your farewell back, and you head out of their dorm. Sure enough, a short woman with a clipboard and a long checklist of items on it was waiting right outside. You paid her no mind as you made your way out of the dorm, noting on how, in spite of their air-headedness, the twins sounded reliable.

<May 2nd, Wednesday 1:20 PM>

Given the crossover in metro lines you'd need to get to Columbia Heights taking you back to Gallery Place, you quickly hopped up on a cab to that all too familiar apartment building. Cabbie this time relayed the same story as the previous one, though he wasn't as talkative given how long the fare for this one was going to be. Considering you didn't head out to the metro line again though, you were at least thankful you'd made the right choice in going for a cab.

Paying your fare after arrival, you quickly made your way to the inside of the apartment building. You knew that it was a long-shot that Emily would even know about the information regarding Marcus. But, she was also the only reliable lead you had short of breaking into a police computer. Though, as you entered the lobby, you quickly realized that Emily probably wasn't expecting you back. With no way of contacting her, you decided to look her upstairs and quickly found that Ms. Tolvert had found you first.

A familiar whirr of alien weapondry sounded right behind your head as you arrived at the main hallway, before Emily's voice stated, "I told you not to come back, at least not without Erick."

"I'm not looking for another exchange Ms. Tolvert", you reply, standing as still as you can, "Just some information on Marcus Holdings. It's important that-"

"With all due respect Torrez", Emily interrupted, "I would appreciate it if you stopped this persecution of my teammates. Not for his safety, but your own."

"Wait, how do you-" you ask, more to sate your own curiosity as you knew what the answer was.

"He's a dangerous criminal, you're a police officer" Emily continued, her eyes narrowing, "but leader doesn't like it when people interfere with the team. That's also not accounting just how dangerous and experienced Holdings is on his own."

You can't tell the accurate range, but her voice can't be more than a few meter away from you. At this range, you'd only have time to evade one of the shots before the other one inevitably hits your suit. Given the narrowness of the hallway, and how wide the spread is on those weapons, you'd imagine she'd have you dead before you even closed the distance or ran away.

'I've got to keep her talking...'

"I'm not looking to hurt him-" you start and then you hear the whirr of another Gantz pistol.

"Then what is it that you're looking for?" Emily interjects, as a sweat drop falls from the side of your head.

"If I'm being honest, I was looking to kill him at one point", you add, and thankfully don't hear the sound of the firing blast behind your head, "but not anymore. The girl just gave me some questions to ask him is all."

There's a short pause, as your breathing tries to stay steady, before she replies again, "What girl? Is it one of those teenie boppers playing college girls, or that one brunette with the psychotic episodes?"

"It's the little girl, Yukino", you respond, and suddenly don't hear Emily's breathing for a second, "she died a few weeks ago after Marcus shoved her off of a railing. She just wants to know why he was there and why he did it."

"And you want me to tell you where he is?" Emily asks, though less sarcastically than you expected, "Hypothetically speaking, if I did know where he was, why should I let you know?

"What's more, what's stopping you from having another change of heart and gunning him down right then and there?"

"Because I don't have a plan!" you admit, trying and failing to not sound desperate, "I wanted to bring him in, but Yukino decided to have us just speak with him. I only came here because I wanted to get information on him."

There's a pregnant pause, and a few more beads of sweat rolling down your head, before Emily speaks up again, "Turn around very slowly Paula. Leave your hands at your sides, and don't many sudden movements."

You do as you're instructed, not daring to move out of place as you slowly turn to face Emily. You were correct in your assumption of how far she was, and noticed she had a Gantz suit on her person hiding under a long overcoat. Given her stance in holding the double pistols, you could tell she was experienced in their use. Her face was stone cold, emotionless, yet holding something back as she held you at gunpoint.

"You're too emotional to be a good officer you know" Emily states, as she scans your face, "I'll arrange a meeting with Marcus, but you come unarmed and without your gear to a designated spot. And you bring the girl with the questions as well."

"What the hell kind of terms are those?!" you almost exclaim, "why are you even so damn protective about him? You won't get to speak with Erick if I'm dead you know!"

"You want to see Marcus that bad, you agree to these terms or leave, make your choice."

There was no assurance of trust beyond just prior engagement with Emily. There was no other middle ground to be reached with her here, only the compromise she was expecting. A compromise you were suspecting to be a trap, and would hope that you weren't making a mistake over something like this.

"Alright, I agree", you answered, "we'll go with your terms, just tell me when, where, and we'll try to make it."

"I'll leave you a letter with the instructions on the lobby office this coming Monday", Emily says, still not dropping the weapons, "if we're all still alive by then, you and the girl will get your meeting. I'll be coming as well, since I need to make sure both parties are satisfied of course."

The almost condescending tone to her final statement annoyed you, but you restrained your voice replying, "Fine, thank you for the kind thoughts. Can I leave now, and can you stop pointing those guns at my face?"

Emily narrowed her eyes at your final statement, before holstering the weapons, and standing to the side of the second floor railing. She was giving you a suspicious eye as you made your way to the stairs. It was only when you got the stairs that she spoke one last time.

"Don't take this personally Paula, but I don't want there to be emnity between our teams. We all want the same thing, some us just value our own security more is all."

"Why give me the Gantz Live program then?" you asked from the first floor, "that much information can't be good for your security you know. How do you think I found out who Marcus was connected to."

"It was on instructions from out leader" Emily answered, "and his word is law in New York. I can't say anymore as to why he decided to go through with it, just that your team got it."

"Did he make it then?" you ask, trying to change the subject, "it's been quite useful you know. Why all of the secrecy if we can work together in this if-"

"I'll only say this", Emily interjected, "it pays to be informed, especially in a game like this. I could have still said no, you know, even knowing everything you did."

"I want us to cooperate, and if that means I have to take a chance on you, then so be it."

Emily turned away from the railing after that, and you heard her footsteps fading away before you could ask anymore questions. Whatever deal with the devil you'd just signed off on, you were going to make sure that Yukino was at least safe for it. The only thing to do now, was survive this next mission if you both wanted your answers.

You took your leave of the apartment, before noticing a text had arrived from Claire's phone. It also came with an image, of Tanjeet's room, much cleaner now, but with Tanjeet still looking dour sitting on his bed.

<Hey Paula, we've been helping Tanjeet clean up. Silvia says a cleaner scenery cheers people up more, so we've been trying to get him to be a little less gloomy. It's...sort of working, as he's talking again. Anyways, see you tonight!>

You only reply back that you'll see them tonight as well, though you're quite happy that they're trying to help out Tanjeet. Even if he wasn't up to speaking too much, he'd honestly be a big help tonight given his own martial arts experience. Clicking off of your phone as you exited the apartment building, you took a sigh of relief however at arriving to some conclusion with the Marcus Holding's issue.

'Even if there is a risk, Emily doesn't seem outwardly malicious about her intentions. Violently paranoid but if she wanted to silence us outright, she'd have already done it.'

'We need a plan,' you thought, and reached for your phone as well, 'If anything, to have some form of contingency in case something occurs with that man. It'll be something I'll speak to Yukino of in person.'

As you reached for your phone to call Yukino, another thought came back to you. Even if you managed to get Yukino's questions answered, what would happen to Marcus then? The officer's side of you wanted to put this bastard away for a long time, but you knew it'd be a practical impossibility. Emily was wrong about you being too emotional for the police, but you knew that not all of your ideas were from your brain anymore.

What's more, there was still the matter of Senator Bowery's question to resolve. This time however, you knew exactly who to ask about it. Hailing a cab, you quickly dialed in a number you hadn't spoken to in a while.

<May 2nd, Wednesday 2:30 PM>

"Alo, Paula?" Isaac Torrez's voice came over your phone, "Are you alright there mija? You hadn't called in a long time, and after I got that call from your department about the gas-main explosion-"

"I'm fine papi", you replied, stretching out in the cab seat, "don't believe what you heard on the news though, I'm alive and well. But there's something I need your advice on."

"Ask away, I got time since I'm currently back home right now."

"Well, I was presented with an offer by a Senator Arnold Bowery. He's proposing something to congress to increase DC's security in lieu of the resent rash of vandalism cases over the last few weeks."

"In return however, he wants full public and advertising support from your business end in New York. He didn't say how intensive it would be, but he said you'd be compensated for it after he receives the proper support."

You overhead a slow, worried sigh before your father replied, "I don't know Bowery personally, since I am not involved with politics, but I wouldn't wish to get involved even if I did. Whatever he offered you, it's a lure to a fish hook of underhanded servitude to his platform."

'Figured he'd never want to get into politics.'

"Alright, thank you for the opinion papi", you acknowledge, "I'll keep in touch, adios."

"I wish we could talk more but alright", Isaac sadly accepts, "keep your eyes on your work mija. No vemos."

The cab came to an halt as it reached Yukino's school, but at least you had your answer.

The good news is a big fat no right?

I just realized that with this "increase in security" initiative going on on NY it could mean that the NY team would hate our guts or even try to hurt our father for messing up their turf.

Bowery is going to be pissed, but honestly we were expecting this.

>>3315265
Bowery's concern is in DC not New York, but there's no telling if he could extend this plan of his for New York as well.

Given how rigidly organized Gantz New York team seems, it does look like a possibility.

Well, Bowery would be pushing the plan in DC regardless I think, I think what he wanted was our dad's company to PR the plan up in NY to try and expand it, probably so he can have national recognition, that could be very dangerous for our father.
If Bowery puts this thing forward and get in Gantz way its probable we will find him as a target or a teammate soon

You quickly made a text to Yukino, letting her know that you'd be picking her up from school when she gets out. She didn't reply, but you figured she'd find it eventually. Though the thought of asking for her at the main office like you did for Carol, the whole plan would need more than just a few minutes to speak of.

'It's fine, I have a few other things to take care of before we meet up anyways.'

The first of was a call to Kurtis, to both make sure that he and Allie were still fine and to let them know about the Marcus Holdings issue. Taking out your phone, you took a small stroll through the middle school's vicinity. After a few tries, Kurtis's voice greeted you over the line.

"Hey Kurtis, just calling to check on how you and your guest are holding up", you state, "also, to let you know I'm finishing up an investigation on a suspect. Though, one with ties to Gantz."

"Is that right?", he replies, "well, I got a few hours before my shift at the bar starts, so I can spare the minutes."

"At the moment, we've been doing fine, no runs with the law but I'm seeing more police around downtown now. Given what happened in the museum it's expected, so we're not leaving the house unless necessary at this point. "

"Right, stay on your toes guys."

"But what's this about a potential suspect related to Gantz?"

<May 2nd, Wednesday 3:50 PM>

You had finished explaining most of the Marcus Holdings situation to Kurtis now, but he sounded a little worried after he responded back with how you planned on resolving the issue. He understood that you and Yukino would be in potential danger, and had proposed to at least accompany you as an away escort. You hadn't shot down the idea completely, but you didn't know Emily's own intuition in staying alert.

He cut off after that, but not before saying he'd be more than willing to help in any plan you had cooking for this. Given his hard-line stance on problem resolution back in the museum, you were worried as to what he might have suggested if you'd told him to capture Marcus as well. You didn't dwell much on this however, and took a bit of Brookland's sights you waited for the time to pass.

There unfortunately wasn't much here, just a few clothing stores and shops with uninteresting signs. Erick might have been interested in one of those retro game stores you found out here, so you made a mental note to take him there once you brought him back. Otherwise, there wasn't much of interest here until you remembered that you were developing a habit of skipping dinner.

You weren't too picky, so you made your way inside a small shop called Today's Pizza. Thinking ahead, you ordered a medium half pepperoni and mushrooms to it be delivered to Yukino's home given your eventual destination. It wasn't long before you noticed the time and quickly rushed back to Yukino's school. Seeing some of the buses depart, you quickly found her near the main entrance, sitting on the sidewalk with her phone in her hands.

<May 2nd, Wednesday 4:20 PM> +1 Trust <Yukino Palmer>

"It sounds too strange...," Yukino said as the elevator took you and her to the fifth floor, "why would she go through all that secrecy just for information like this? She knows he's a criminal...so why is she protecting him like that?"

You had recalled the day's earlier events to Yukino in relation to Marcus Holdings in the cab back to her home. It almost hurt to tell her right after you saw her again, as she'd been ecstatic to see you again. She understood the timing however, as the current situation with Emily wasn't lost on her. Even now, she was trying to make sense of why Emily's whole plan for meeting up had been this secretive to begin with.

"She mentioned there was a leader in New York", you answer, as the elevator reaches the fifth floor, "someone who's word, she mentioned, was the law there. If it's for their own security, then the only thing we can do is go by their rules, or try to convince their leader."

That last statement made you chuckle in slight, bemusement, but Yukino soon replied with, "If they're this secretive with a murderer, their leader may be downright untouchable."

You could only nod and sigh in acknowledgment of Yukino's idea. The idea of speaking to their leader was a delusional joke in your mind if you were being honest. But it really was the only way you could think of even understand the New York team's motivations. You didn't ponder much else as Yukino let you into the apartment.

"Well, pizza should be arriving in a few minutes", you state, going to sit down on a living room sofa, "in the meantime, I'd like to know if you remember anything else from the incident Yukino."

"Well...there's not much else really" Yukino replied, setting her backpack next to the sofa, "I thought I might have seen him for a brief second before I fell, but I'm not really sure. I never caught a good look at him besides that he looked old and hairy with that beard of his."

'Wait...but that's not right...the camera footage...'

The detail was contradictory to the camera footage you saw in the mall, but coincided with Silvia's selfie photo of the event. One captured part of the image, albeit fuzzy, in the camera footage and Yukino had seen it as well in person if for a brief second. Yet the video feed had shown nothing but a fern's movements and no other movements in the camera. Why was he showing up in one but not the other.

"This whole thing has me really confused as well honestly", you recline a bit on the sofa, "but it matches up to what Claire said, even if there's something off about it in a prior evidence piece. I would make a terrible detective honestly, I only have so much patience for cryptic stuff like thi-"

A loud ring from the wall phone interrupts your small interrogation. You go to pick it up, and hear the receptionist say the pizza's arrived.

Possibly an ayylien disguised as Marcus Holdings? But why?
I feel like Bolivar is setting up the Triads for something. Marcus Holdings is connected to them, Senator Arnold Bowery is dealing with them... what could it mean?

Of the things we can confirm is that Marcus is definitely working for a Triad. Whether or not that Triad's members are aliens is something that's not been confirmed.

Bowery is definitely connected to them through whatever shady deals he's making in with them. Though, it almost sounds contradictory since he wants to increase security and police presence in DC.

Something here isn't adding up, and I get the feeling Marcus may know if he is as involved as we think.

Marcus is not an ayy, we can confirm that much OOC because if he was then Gantz would've left him dead the first time. So assuming Marcus is human AND there are legit ayys in the Triads, would he know? Seeing as he's a Gantz team member, he's fully aware aliens are scum, but what's the depth of his knowledge there? And if he knows shit about ayys in disguise, why hasn't him or his team done anything about them?
>>
>>3316265
well, to be honest we don't know if ayys are scum, we only know that is either them or us during the hunt, so there's nothing stopping a guy with loose moral to helping ayys for money as long as their pictures don't appear in the ball

In spite of the time it took to probably make it here, the pizza was delicious and warm as you took your first bite. The tangy aroma of the mushrooms coupled with melted cheese and tomato sauce was delectable. You'd never been too into ordering out, but whatever that pizzeria was doing was excellent. It certainly made the conversation more savory.

"Do you think there's a connection with Gantz here?" you query as Yukino takes a bite of her own pizza slice, "he was a member before the incident, you and the twins became members right after the incident. And since he doesn't appear on the recordings, maybe it's another fail-safe Gantz has?"

"You mean like how normal people can't see us during missions?" Yukino answers unsure, but you narrow your eyes, "But we weren't in Gantz yet, so it shouldn't happened. Unless Gantz somehow knows who's going into the game, but that's not possible...right?"

You let out a breath of resignation and take a sip of the soda you poured for Yukino and yourself. You got the feeling you were missing something here, but at the same time, part of brain was telling you it probably wasn't worth it. Even if Gantz knew who would be killed for the game prior, there was still the issue of why Claire and Silvia's selfie photo not being smudged out.

"Maybe it was a situation like what happened with Allie..." you try to surmise, looking somewhat annoyed with yourself, "like, they knew too much so Gantz did them in. And that's assuming that it was Marcus Holdings and not some alien in disguise as him."

You half chuckle at that final suggestion, and Yukino does as well. Though, considering the realm of possibility was now several light-years wide for you, it wouldn't be the most insane thing to believe in anymore.

"Thanks so much for the pizza by the way", Yukino exclaimed, beaming with glee, "How did you know I liked pepperoni so much?"

"Doesn't everyone like pepperoni?" You retort jokingly, earning a giggle from Yukino, "really though, it was a lucky guess. I always loved pepperoni pizza in New York, but DC has their own flair for this stuff as well."

"Do you know when your dad is getting home today by the way? I may be leaving in a little bit, but I need to ask since I'm still technically your sitter."

"He's out on another full day work thing again" Yukino replies, somewhat sadly, "said he'd be back tomorrow evening, so it must be out of town. He's been worried about Erick by the way, even after you spoke to him."

"Make that three of us. Honestly though, we need to finish up some more training this week before the next mission-"

A vibration from your phone interrupts your train of thought, and you quickly grab it from the table next to you. Opening the message, you see it's addressed from the twins.

<Hey Paula, here's the address for the training.

Audubon Terrace NW, Soapstone Valley Park

We can pick you up if you want btw, just say where.>

Alright, archived and saved. Be sure to give us a vote on the /qst/ archive, and besides a shaky final few updates times, I am glad to have finally returned to Gantz: Quest and I hope you all enjoyed this week or so of writing and questing with me.

I will have a poll up on my twitter on whether or not to keep the current weekly update sessions or to return to the weekend full day threads only. Let me know since it'll be important to keep in mind so my scheduling doesn't go insane again.

I'll start up the new thread next Friday March 8th at 6:00 PM so I can take slight breather from posting and get some ideas ready for the upcoming thread.

Anyways, thank you again /qst/, have a good evening and keep checking the twitter for further updates.
