You are Neliel tu Odelschwanck, an arrancar who is loosely aligned with the shinigami of the Gotei 13, and at the moment you find yourself on a personal mission. After a substantial amount of trouble with the quincy that have been left here to guard Aizen's rear echelon, you've finally had your first success by following a familiar trace of reiatsu to where Dondachakka has been hiding.

“Dondachakka?”

The arrancar's eyes snap up in instinctive fear, before realizing who that voice belonged to.

“Lady Nel?” he gasps. “Lady Nel!”

“Hey Dondachakka,” you force a smile. “Sorry it took a while.”

“Lady Nel what happened to your arm!?” your fraccion blubbers. “You've been fighting that hard to find us?”

“Of course,” you insist. “Come on, dummy. You knew I'd be back for you, right?”

“But for us, who weren't even strong enough to escape ya know...”

“Stop that,” you insist sternly, before softening your tone. “Tell you what. You stop talking down about yourself, and I'll stop blaming myself for getting you into this situation in the first place.”

“Sound fair?”

After considering it for a few moments, Dondachakka nods. “Well when you put it that way, ya know... sure, I guess.”

With that settled, you're left to consider the next problem. “How do we get back...”

“I dunno...” Dondachakka admits with a frown. “I've been trying to figure that out, ya know.”

“We could always go through to the living world,” you frown, thinking deeply on the matter. “But Pesche is still in the Schattenbeireich, and we'd have no way of getting there from the living world unless we could find a quincy capable of doing it...”

“Or,” you countinue, “we could go back the way we came. But I have no idea if it would actually work that way.”

“Seems like a tough question...” Dondachakka muses along with you. “Not like we could just ask Ulquiorra, you know...”

“Why bring him up?” you muse. “Is he here?”

“There was a whole big fight, ya know!” Dondachakka explains. “A bunch of weirdos started picking fights and some of 'em ran into Ulquiorra. It was scary, ya know, so I ran!”

“I thought they were really gonna kill me by accident!”

So that powerful person was Ulquiorra after all... interesting.

“What're ya thinking about, Miss Neliel?”

You make the decision that Dondachakka was hoping you wouldn't: you decide to try and find Ulquiorra.

It's not like you've never spoken with what you suppose is now, like yourself, a former Espada. But you always knew him to be a true loyalist to Aizen Sōsuke first and foremost, and you've long suspected that the reason you can't consider him to be a cruel individual is that his own nihilistic streak makes ascribing his actions to the enjoyment of suffering to be disingenuous. You can't tell that he enjoys much of anything, when it comes down to it.

But he's the one most likely to know how to get back to where you need to go, and for that reason you decide to risk it.

His reiatsu isn't particularly difficult to find, as he makes no attempt to hide it. But even in what you gather is a relaxed state it's enough to leave Dondachakka shaking.

“Ulquiorra Schiffer,” you greet him sternly, still half-expecting a fight.

He stops, amid a sea of white sand dunes that stretches as far as the eye can see, and turns to face you with a look of complete calm. Or rather, a look that lacks any sort of emotional content whatsoever that you can tell.

“You've lost some weight, Neliel tu Odelschwanck.”

Was that a joke?

“Don't get me wrong,” he continues, as if having predicted your reaction. “I mean to say you look slightly malnourished. You've been in captivity for some time, and no doubt... concerned for the safety of your fracciones. It comes as no surprise that you would be thinner.”

“You sound like a worried mother,” you joke, allowing your zanpakuto to remain in its sheath. There's no aggression there to react to anyway. “I need your help.”

“So you did not come here by choice, but out of necessity,” Ulquiorra nods, resuming his previous course. “I shall adjust my pace so that your fraccion may follow. Do try to keep up.”

After several minutes he leads you down several rows of dunes, expanding outwards like ripples, and into a low spot where the ground finally seems firm. On this outcropping of stone you find the remnants of old structures, how old it's impossible to say for sure. Maybe not much older than you, or maybe as old as the moon itself. Amid these structures is an archway of carved stone bricks.

“This is a gateway which connects the Schattenbereich and Hueco Mundo,” Ulquiorra explains. “I was just on my way to bury it, but if you need to use it you may do so first.”

“Why would you bury it?” you ask. “Why not come with us instead?”

Ulquiorra reaches out and brushes the archway with one pale fingertip, and as he does so across its entire arc a shimmering membrane almost like a sheet of rippling water forms within its frame.

He seems to consider what you just said.

“My intention was to seal off Hueco Mundo,” Ulquiorra admits, “but perhaps that would only serve to delay the inevitable in the event that Aizen Sōsuke wins. The quincy would invade this place eventually anyway.”

“That's what you're concerned about?” you ask skeptically.

Ulquiorra nods once. “That is correct. Either Aizen wins and burying this gateway will delay his ability to bring through an army all at once, or Aizen's enemies win and this prevents the shinigami from having an easy opportunity to become aggressors.”

“The shinigami were aggressors before,” you point out. “I don't know that this would leave them in a good place to attack us. After all, you and I are each supposedly as strong as an average Captain at very least. Then we have Halibel and Starrk.”

“Are they powerful?”

You nod. “Unreasonably so. But mostly I don't think their strongest Captains would agree to attack them.”

Ulquiorra seems to think to himself for a few seconds.

“I will accompany you.”

When you step through the portal, you immediately find that the Schattenbereich is in turmoil. You'd have expected something this important to be under guard, but instead the post stands abandoned.

“How peculiar,” Ulquiorra mutters.

“Seems the survivors of all the fighting have been driven off,” you guess. “With no one to command them, it makes some sense.”

You rely on your reiatsu sensing abilities, and quickly track down Pesche's unique presence. But unlike with Dondachakka, the scene you find is immediately upsetting rather than relieving. Pesche is lying on the ground in a pool of blood, a clean slash across his chest and another across his face.

“Hey, Neliel,” he greets you weakly. “I see you found Dondachakka...”

“Stop talking,” you order, before ripping off a section of your remaining sleeve with your teeth.

“That looks bad,” Ulquiorra tells you quietly.

“It's manageable,” you insist, drooling determinedly onto the cloth. “I gan hee eem wid mah spid.”

Once the rag is soaked you plaster it against Pesche's chest wound. “Don't move. A wound this bad will take some time to heal... it'd be better if we got you to someone with some actual healing skill, but you shouldn't be moved.”

>Ulquiorra and I need to keep moving. Dondachakka, you stay with Pesche.

You decide that what you need to do is find some evidence of what happened here. For the most part you were not meant to be here at all, your assignment under Aizen Sōsuke was to control the swathe of territory in Hueco Mundo surrounding the Gate which existed there. For a while, the only frequent contact you had with anyone here in the Schattenbereich was with Giselle Gewelle... an awful individual, one of the few who could provoke a strong emotional response from you.

And that emotional response was disgust.

Truly, a remarkable experience.

The first traces you find are of reiatsu, powerful reiatsu at that. Arrancars, shinigami, and quincy all mixed together. Amid a significant amount of devastation you find the mutilated remains of Giselle Gewelle, her cranium clearly split open and her half-dried brains splattered around her.

“Grim,” you mutter, realizing the violence that must have occurred here. Strange, at least three quincy were witness to her end. An arrancar as well, what feels like Neliel tu Odelschwanck... likely in her released form. And something else... something that seems to be none of the above.

Your search leads you further afield.

You find evidence of scattered engagements between shinigami and quincy, none of which particularly strong, until you find the scene of a great battle between a Sternritter and another strange presence. This was... Kusajishi Riku?

There are cracked stones and blood splatters where weaker quincy were tossed aside like ragdolls, but there is also clear evidence that not one but several Sternritter who were killed around this location.

Then you spot something interesting: a trail of blood that leads away from the scene of battle, and a trace of what would have been at some point a powerful reiatsu, but which grows weak and eventually disappears as you follow the evidence.

The patterns clearly trace a path, and at its end is a rotund little man with silly-looking hair.

“A survivor?” you wonder aloud.

You stand over the quincy, who is still crawling pathetically across the ground whimpering like a beaten dog. As much as you doubt that he will prove to be of any use, you decide to interrogate him.

“Remind me, who are you?” you demand.

The quincy flops to the ground, but does not immediately reply.

“My guess is that you are a Sternritter?”

The quincy whimpers, and then begins to crawl again. “Can't stop or she'll kill me... can't stop or she'll kill me... can't stop or she'll kill me...”

You bring your foot down on the wretch's head, slamming him abruptly face-first into the ground. “Get a hold of yourself, you're embarrassing your entire species.”

“... Pepe Waccabrada...”

So that was his name... you recall vaguely that he was indeed a Sternritter, though you don't know anything more about him or his powers. But judging by his wounds and his present condition you also suppose that he won't be a threat to you either way. Not anymore.

“You were defeated by an invader?” you demand.

The man shudders, perhaps involuntarily. “I used my Schrift on her wife... I had no idea... I couldn't have known...”

“Who was your opponent?” you persist, pushing down a little more heavily with your foot.

“Don't make me...” he whimpers.

You draw your zanpakuto and he panics.

“Kusajishi! It was that demon-witch Kusajishi!”

“Captain Kusajishi,” you muse. That's a name Aizen Sōsuke was certain to mention, and you can recall your own brief encounter with the woman. “She was the one who defeated you? How?”

“She shrugged my Schrift off!” he protests bitterly. “Her emotions, her thoughts, her movements... even arrancar are closer to human! She's some sort of monster!”

“I need you to tell me more about what Kusajishi did to you,” you demand firmly. “What is your power and how did she counter it?”

“I can induce love,” he explains, his voice finally beginning to clear for a moment as if his sanity has been returned. “Or I could, in normal people, before her.”

“And she avoided that?”

“It just made her angrier!” the wretched quincy wails. “No ordinary person should have been able to do that, only an inhuman monster without normal human feelings.”

“Then she reduced you to this?”

“Two stabs...” he mutters, “two stabs, and I only saw one.”

A closer examination reveals that the former sternritter has been impaled twice through the torso, apparently through two key pressure points. His body is now physiologically incapable of producing or regulating spiritual power, leaving him in his current pathetic state. And from what he's telling you, she did so at a speed which defied his ability to see.

He does not strike you as a particularly skilled combatant, but to be so much faster than a Sternritter at all is impressive.

“And the others?”

“Dead...” the wretch moans. “All dead. All dead... except for me. She left me like this... this is my punishment...”

“Surely they did not kill everyone,” you frown, but the creature that once may have been a man simply resumes crawling.

“All dead... we were already dead...”

You decide to be thorough about this before returning to Neliel, and so you rely on your pesquisa to get a better sense for what might or might not be nearby. And sensing something, you quickly abandon Pepe to his sad fate.

Though you say 'sad', you don't really feel that way. It would be difficult to feel much sympathy even if that were something you were inclined towards.

What you eventually find is an arrancar, seemingly in good health, who you recognize.

“Grimmjow Jaggerjaquez,” you greet him stoically.

He glares up at you from where he's been presumably licking his wounds. “Fuck off.”

“I take it you won your battle?” you ask, implying that had he not he would either be dead or in a similar state to Pepe Waccabrada.

He looks away from you. “I said fuck off.”

“Were you at least dignified in your loss?”

He doesn't answer.

“I see.”

After a while he glares at you again. “If you wanna make fun of something go find that Peepee guy.”

“I already did,” you inform Grimmjow. “You are still alive, maybe you should start with that.”

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” he demands angrily. “I got my shit kicked in by that monster catwoman, which just about takes away my whole reason for existing at this point.”

“Then find a new purpose,” you shrug dismissively. “If I can commit to trying it, then what is your excuse?”

“... you mean you're not here to execute me for Aizen?” he asks.

You glance down at him with what must seem like a confused look. “Would you like me to?”

“No?” Grimmjow responds incredulously.

“Then I won't,” you reply simply.

“You should come with me, join Neliel,” you suggest, mindful of the fact that technically you no longer have the authority to order him to do anything. “Regardless of whether Aizen Sōsuke wins or loses his own personal war we may be obliged to defend ourselves in the near future.”

“And you want me?” Grimmjow scowls at you.

“We would stand a better chance together than separate,” you point out. “And if there is an invasion aimed at killing the remaining arrancar we will end up fighting regardless of whether we do so together or apart.”

Grimmjow stares at you for a few moments, and eventually sighs dramatically. “Alright, what the hell. Guess sticking with you and goat-girl can't make things any worse for me.”

“Lead the way, batman.”

You pause. “I'm not sure I appreciate you calling me that.”

It takes you some time to return to Neliel, who seems startled by the fact that Grimmjow is following you. For his part, Grimmjow looks completely uninterested.

“So I was thinking,” Neliel begins, watching you and Grimmjow carefully for your responses, “that once Pesche can move on his own we should go to the living world.”

“What the hell for?” Grimmjow demands. “We got our asses handed to us by the shinigami and you want us to go way out of our way to go find them again?”

“There are bound to be casualties,” Neliel explains her rationale. “I can help with that.”

“By finishing them off?” Grimmjow strokes his chin. “I don't like it.”

“It does seem rather underhanded, especially for you,” you observe.

“What, no!” Neliel seems shocked. “I meant by healing them, you dummies!”

“I like that even less!” Grimmjow retorts.

“It isn't the worst plan I've ever heard,” you admit.

Grimmjow stares at you incredulously. “The fuck it's not!"

“It could easily ingratiate us with the Shinigami,” you explain carefully. “And if they seem inclined to kill us we can attack them while they're weakened.”

“Ulquiorra,” Neliel insists sternly, staring you straight in the eyes. “No.”

You wince slightly.

“The shinigami aren't all of one mind,” Neliel insists, making her case more for the sake of convincing Grimmjow than anything else. “Kusajishi Riku's faction is already in our favor... if we factor the three of us in as well we actually outnumber the rest of the Seireitei.”

“How do you figure?” you press, wanting to hear her reckoning.

“Captains Kusajishi, Shihōin, Ichimaru, and Fēng are all closely affiliated. If Kusajishi and Shihōin make a decision together the others will follow. Lieutenant Matsumoto is also Captain-class, and Captain Shiba is Captain Kusajishi's sister, so that makes six Captain-class fighters out of thirteen Divisions. Then there are Halibel and Starrk, who are stronger arrancars than I am, and the surviving Sternritters led by Bambietta Basterbinne.”

“Make that a total of nine fighters in that faction capable of facing a Captain, plus three.”

“So what you're saying is if we get closer to the Kusajishi faction we can avoid trouble?” you ask for the sake of clarity. “That is your plan?”

Neliel nods confidently. “Their Captain-Commander is no fool... even if some popular sentiment is against an alliance with arrancars like us, he knows better than to start a fight that could lead to such catastrophic results for the Seireitei's fighting strength.”

“I still don't like it,” Grimmjow grumbles.

“Do you have a better idea?” you ask, sparing him a glance. “If so, then speak up. If not, we should leave as soon as possible.”

You are Neliel tu Odelschwanck, and despite grumbling the entire way Grimmjow actually follows you to the world of the living. Amazing what people can do when they find themselves without an alternative.

When you appear in the skies above Karakura town the response is immediate: you find a blade pressed against your throat.

“Reinforcements?” the bald man pants, having clearly overexerted himself just to get here and make a show of force. Empty though it clearly is.

“Yes,” you nod politely. “For you. I have some healing abilities.”

“Lower your weapon, shinigami,” a husky voice commands as another joins you. “I know one of this group.”

“Halibel,” you greet your fellow arrancar. “Good to see you in one piece.”

“Likewise,” she greets you in return, glancing at your group. “You brought guests?”

“I figure they can help with bandages at least,” you offer, eyeing the wounds you've begun to notice which cover Halibel's body. “I can help with that...”

Halibel gently pushes you away, denying your aid. “I will be fine. If you wish to help, speak with Lieutenant Kotetsu.”

You sigh, but nod in agreement before seeking out Lieutenant Kotetsu Isane, who you figure will be where the greatest number of wounded are.

“She seemed strong,” Grimmjow admits.

Ulquiorra retorts immediately. “She would beat you senseless.”

“Nobody asked you.”

Kotetsu greets you tersely, but does a momentary double-take when she realizes who you are.

“Are you here to help?” she asks.

“I have some healing skills,” you inform her.

“Then attend to Captain Ichimaru,” she tells you, before barking a quick order towards the man currently in that assignment. “Kira, go relieve the team healing Captain Komamura!”

You find Captain Ichimaru and Lieutenant Matsumoto together, both wounded of course but Ichimaru clearly more so.

“Hey,” he greets you with a pained grunt. “I see your little field trip was a success.”

“Always a smartass,” Matsumoto sighs, propped up as she is against a tree trunk. “Works a lot worse when you're flat on your back like that, Gin.”

“I'm here to finish your treatment,” you inform him, taking a knee at his side.

“You're a healer?” Ichimaru asks, apparently slightly impressed.

Matsumoto chuckles. “I figured there must be an arrancar who could. Great time to find out I was... what are you doing?”

“That's a good question,” Ichimaru agrees, before starting to pull away. “Hey, what's the big idea!?”

“Ids mah drool ad aas ealin proberdies,” you explain, glancing up at him and dripping the clear fluid into a wound on his side.

“That's ridiculous!” he protests.

Matsumoto on the other hand laughs deeply, before whimpering in pain. “My sides hurt...”

You stop drooling and quickly pin Ichimaru, your palm pressing down on his sternum, and glare straight into his eyes.

“You are my patient,” you insist sternly. “My healing technique may be bizarre by your standards, but healing you is my responsibility and I intend to see it through whether you like it or not. So lay still, keep your mouth shut, and let me drool on you.”

“R-right...” he mutters, obviously feeling defeated.
