I return once more, unmarred by car; man or beast.
Last time on Worm Quest you...

>Joined the Wards
>Made some friends
>...r abusive dad got ganked by the ghosts of racism past; present and future, all at once.
>Fought tooth and nail with the local Protectorate leader to get your brother a transfer out of a really shit school and into a nice one. Going so far as to insinuate you'd join villains if that's what it took.
>Made some cool shit.
>Aced a few tests.
>And went to talk to the quiet kid from your chem class

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
James is his name, you've heard it when the teacher called for attendance. (An oddity in your old school, rarely practiced by your teachers.) And he peaked your interest mainly due to the look of confusion and intense concentration on his face. A look you find rather confusing regarding the total absence of any last minute homework or tricky calculus stuff in front of him. Even if there was any, you doubt he'd need your help with it, the guy is seriously smart. Apparently he's in the top class for pretty much everything.

So naturally, you decide to butt in where you aren't wanted and try your darnedest to "help". That's what heroes do right? Probably make whatever pre-existing problem there is way worse?

The boy himself is fairly tall and well muscled, with maybe a few inches on you. His hair is a dark brown and his eyes are the same, set under furrowed brows..

You sit down opposite him with a quick "Hey." and a sunny smile that's swiftly becoming second nature to you. "You look kinda frazzled man, what's up?

He lifts his head to look at you, face becoming unnervingly blank as he seems to stare right through you for a second.
"Do you need help with something?"
The curt response kinda throws you off, on the other hand though he sounds legitimately curious, so you take what he's saying at face value.

"No, uh. That's what I came to ask you... "

He purses his lips and looks back down for a second before shrugging, the somewhat confused expression returning to his face.
"I... am having difficulty figuring something out. I've been placed in a difficult position and I have received conflicting advice from the two sources I would consider most trustworthy. Compounding that is the fact that either course of action I might take will put me at risk of harm. Minor harm, more of an annoyance really, but harm nonetheless."
James looks back to you, one hand spinning a fork around his fingers.
"My natural inclinations are not do anything, but my position is uncertain. Action might be preferable, but would put me at certain risk. I don't know what is best."

"Damn man. Any advice I could give ya would be too generic to be useful. I'll need more info if I'm gonna say anything that might-"

That's as far as you get before the window you're seated next to explodes inwards, a large metal box screeching as it tears through tables, students yelling as they dive or run out of the way. You yourself quickly slide across the table, ducking under a striped umbrella that damn near takes your head off.

You go to take another look at the metal box, but you're quickly distracted by the two figures floating through the massive hole in the side of Arcadia.

"WASSUP FUCKERS!"

"Oh for god's sake Rune."

Floating on a manhole cover, the teen form of the Empire 88's youngest Supernazi surfs (for that is what she appears to be doing.) through the hole and stops in the centre of the room, her red robes fluttering in the now significantly breezier cafeteria. She does a quick check around the room as her companion enters, the shock of her sudden appearance not quite worn off yet.

Alabaster follows her in, wrapped around a traffic cone and using it as if it were a flotation device.
If you had to describe him in a single word, it would be tired.

Rune stands up a bit taller on her rather improvised levitation device before continuing as if her companion said nothing."Yeah, that's right. It is we! The Empire's most feared villains! Here to kidnap the the young heir of an influential company."

"That's probably Hookwolf actually, and uh... if a..." Alabaster checks a small card before continuing. "Dan Stemsfield is here, we're kidnapping you. So come out or Rune starts squishing bystanders. Also we know some of you are probably Wards, so if anyone makes any sudden moves I'll start throwing grenades everywhere. That means you Glory Girl." He finishes with a pointed look at where Victoria Dallon is currently sat, already hovering in an attack position.

"It's Dean, Alabaster. Dean Stansfield." Rune looks a bit less cocky now, her villainous grin becoming more obviously forced. "Which of course you already knew, because my handwriting is TOTALLY LEGIBLE AND FINE!"

"Yeah, so come on out."
"MUAHAHAHA"

Good evil laugh though.

In an act of sheer balls out heroism you decide to intervene in the situation, a look of absolute trustworthiness and innocence upon your EXTREMELY aryan (might get you bonus points) face.

"Uh, yeah. He's... he's not in today." And suddenly all eyes are on you, including Rune, who is no longer smiling. "We're in the "snrk" same ehe-nglish class and. And" Your fit of the giggles turns into a crescendo of full on belly laughs as you all but bend over backwards, tears in your eyes as you point at the two hyper-racists. "He's not even IN today!"

There's a long moment of silence, before Rune speaks up.
"Dude, that's not gonna work.

"What!"

She points over your shoulder, towards the back of the room with a smug smile on her face.
"He just came out of the bathroom."

You bend backwards to look behind you and so it would seem. Standing halfway through the door to the gents is a very sheepish looking Dean. He looks around before spotting you and waving awkwardly.
"Sorry, I heard a commotion and came to check it out..."

"I can respect the balls on you though. It takes a special kind of normal to stand up against TWO supervillains.
The look on her face becomes positively sadistic as she looks you over, her own maniacal laugh joining your nervous giggling.
"Which is why Alabaster'll just kick your shit in instead of killing you, be thankful for your mistress' mercy. Alabaster BEGIN THE KICKING!"

Look, if you had one shot... one opportunity to throw food at one of Brockton Bay's most feared supervillains. Would you take it, or would you let it slip?

Alabaster steps towards you slowly, shaking his head as he takes off his suit jacket.

This is it, your first proper super fight, and only your team will ever know. No one will ever truly appreciate this fight, which is the only way it could possibly happen.

Your plate is ready, knees weak; arms are heavy as your heart hammers in your chest. The plate of half-eaten Spaghetti and tomato sauce weighing down your right arm, somehow heavier than the knife you all but killed Stormtiger with.

You're nervous, but your smile lights up the room and on the surface you're nothing less than calm... and ready.

Alabaster takes a step backwards... his pristine white suit almost gleaming in the light from Arcadia's well maintained lights.

You lost yourself in the moment, Alabaster's expression somehow becoming more pained as he realises the true extent of your heinous plan. You'll only get one shot at this, do not miss your chance.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and you damn well make use of it. The plate sails through the air as the albino supervillain sways to the side, but he's just not quick enough to escape your slightly over-seasoned wrath. He tries to wipe it off, but...

There's spaghetti on his jacket already.

He turns to charge, but James' salad bowl impacts his face with a meaty thwack-ing sound. It's less than a second before Alabaster and Rune are being being bombarded from all sides with the whole damn refectory's worth of food and drink. None of it even potentially lethal or even particularly harmful, but humiliating and disrupting in the extreme.

You see Dennis collecting up stew from the main service line behind the "supervillains".

You watch triumphantly as the supervillains are humiliated and thrown back by the sheer volume of hurled cafeteria food, their costumes and composure similarly ruined. Alabaster resets back to clean every few seconds but the sheer volume of food forces him back and to the floor, plates bouncing off his head and ricocheting off of his head as he sighs in a kind of tired resignation.

Rune isn't doing much better, her previously green robes now stained red and yellow due to the cafeteria's special menu for today. (Curry and Italian) She's clearly trying to lift and manipulate her various objects, but the frequent impacts seem to be knocking her off balance and it's only further compounded by her own sense of humour, which has betrayed her. She's seemingly stuck in a three way deadlock between trying to kill you with telekinesis, pointing and laughing at Alabaster and receiving plate hand and spoonfuls of whatever the cafeterias inhabitants had close by.

A quick glance to the side and you notice the many students now recording the high stakes food fight. An idea quickly comes to mind and you reach over into the upturned hot dog cart, retrieving a sausage and posing with it like a general from a world war 2 film.
"It was good to meat you two, but the pigs are gonna be here soon so you'd better fry away. I apologise for being the sauce of your displeasure, but for a normal like me to take on two seasoned veterans was an opportunity that I'd have to be scrambled to give up."

You bite the sausage in half as Dennis drenches a now fetal Alabaster in curry sauce, laughing as he slowly crawls towards the hole in the wall.
"But you should've known that a spaghetti master like me would be beyond your capabilities to defeat. Anyone who's ever fought me in a food fight before, well...

"They've all..."

"Pasta way."

Rune is near hysteric at this point, trembling with. She manages to raise a hand along with the hot dog truck, but thinks better of it as a very recognizable engine exhaust becomes audible.

"Shit. Alabaster! grab my board!"
He complies with yet another weary sigh. If he weren't immortal you'd have expected him to have pulled a Chrysippus by now.
What you weren't expecting was for Rune to turn your way, a huge grin upon her own face.
"Hey, this ain't the last you've seen of me smuggy. You've saved your friend this time, but I'll remember this! What you assume to be a threat is somewhat sabotaged by the bolognese that impacts her right afterwards. Her and Alabaster rise off the ground, her albino caretaker hanging onto the bottom by his fingertips.
"You're mine! you hear me? I'm gonna make you wish you've never been born!"
"I told you this was a bad idea Rune..."

They leave, followed by one last baguette hurled by Victoria as they retreat off into the sky.

Rune and Alabaster:Defeated
+1 TP
We'll talk about these later, when you get into a lab.

A few minutes later Armsmaster turns up, the various students having been evacuated outside and a headcount performed. Apparently casualties were nonexistant barring one kid who got his leg broken by the hot dog cart. There's a lot of waiting around as he interviews various students before eventually getting to you. Your shit eating grin is even wider than normal, granting you an almost manic aura. Most people seem to be cool with it though, and you've got more than a few high fives while waiting for what comes next.

You're pulled into a PRT van, supposedly for an interrogation on why exactly you decided to antagonise the Nazi super-villains. Once you get inside though all you get is a judgemental stare for a very long time. Said shit eating grin slowly deteriorates as you're brought into the Wards room and sat down, a totally impassive Armsmaster sat opposite you.

"You are aware of how incredibly dangerous what you've just done was. Right?"

You roll your eyes, rallying as the memory of a pasta encrusted Alabaster plays on repeat in your head.
"What? Those losers couldn't commit a hate crime in a synagogue! I-"

"Those "Losers" both have double digit bodycounts. Alabaster fights with guns, knives and grenades Cardshark. He is believed to be responsible for over forty deaths. From what I saw on the security cameras Rune was about to kill you until she heard the engine on my Motorcycle." That statement is accompanied by a slight upwards twitch in his facial muscles, an observation that peeves you more than a little.
"I don't know how to tell you how lucky you were. You put not only your own identity at risk, but that of all the Wards there. If any of them had used their powers, it would be easy for villains to figure out who was who based on social patters. Right now one of the only things keeping you safe is that no one knows who Any of the Wards are. Once one of you gets outed, it's only a matter of time until the rest are as well."

"I couldn't just let her grab Dean!"

He's silent for a moment, before clearing his throat and continuing.
"That... is also true."
He leans his halberd on the couch next to him, clasping his hands together for a second, before he brings them up to his helmet and pulls it off, revealing a rather plain looking man with short black hair. and baggy grey eyes.

>"Meddling when you don't have to is the Essence of being a Hero"
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_sBOsh-vyI

"Coming across a situation like that out of costume is difficult for people like- like us, the more heroically inclined. We have these powers, and we want to use them for good. To help. But sometimes the risk is too great, and sometimes you are in a situation where there's nothing you can do except trust your teammates. I was there in less than three minutes, Velocity and Miss Militia had also been dispatched. Rune would have been moving slower due to the extra weight and we know exactly what direction they'd be heading in."

He rolls his helmet back and forth in his hands, seemingly inspecting it. More likely though, he's using it as an excuse not to look you in the eye.
"I understand that you might not trust me completely after our altercation during your recruitment, but believe me when I say that I have planned for this. I was put in charge of the Protectorate here for good reason, most of the time the plans I make? They work. And one of the first things I spent time doing upon coming to Brockton Bay was working on ways to keep the heroes and wards under my command as safe in their civilian lives as possible. Colin doesn't really exist any more, he turned into Armsmaster a long time ago and I'm okay with that. And sometimes I forget not everyone else can do the same, sure. But I know how much the safety that comes with a civilian identity can mean to people."

He looks up now, a fierce determination in his eyes.
"We would have caught Rune, and Dean would be fine. I know you're new here, and we've gotten off to a bad start. But I need you to trust me."

He puts his hand out at that, somewhat haltingly, but there's a focus in his eyes that betrays his awkward body language.
"I need you to promise me that you will."

"I want to say yes, I really do. But I also really don't know if I can keep that promise"
Your response puts him on the back foot, his brow furrowing in confusion as the hand he'd put forward wavers slightly.

"It's like what happened at Arcadia. I had no idea you were coming, and just assuming a hero'll come by does nothing useful. I couldn't just stand there while something terrible happened, and absolve myself of the responsibility. Now if I'd known you were coming then I probably would have done differently, but I can't trust anyone that unconditionally, not even you."

This time it's your turn to look up with fire in your eyes, then it's gone as soon as it came. Determination replaced with uncertainty.
"Hope alone won't push back Villains and save my friends. So I don't really know what to say."

You're both silent for a second before an unexpected third voice pipes up from Armsmaster's helmet.
"If I might interrupt? I think I might be able to help here."

Holy shit, Armsmaster has an AI in his suit? That's rad.

"It's Dragon, actually."
"It's Dragon, actually." The two respond at the same time, in impressive synchronization

OH MAN THAT'S EVEN COOLER.
wait, you said that out loud.

"Don't worry, I get the AI thing a lot. Pay no attention to Saint and his propaganda. There's a woman behind the curtain I promise"

"I wasn't aware you were listening in."
Armsmaster actually sounds a bit awkward now, in contrast to his earlier quiet seriousness.

"You never actually hung up, or said goodbye. So I stayed on the line just in case."
Armsmaster picks up the helmet and places it on the centre of the table in between you. sharing a slightly confused look with you.
"You should probably be glad for that too, because this conversation could be about to go very wrong. I am officially intervening. If you two are okay with that of course."

It's cool, you're just sat here having a conversation with the world's two greatest Tinkers. It's all cool. Just another Tuesday on that Wards hustle. It's on days like this that the whole superhero thing really hit you hard.

"Right so. Colin, you're asking slightly too much for someone who doesn't know you well enough yet. Hopefully he will come to trust you that much, but you can't just rely on your reputation. He's a cape now too so the mysticism is gone. Show him he can trust you. Also, it's important that when he does do something well, which he has you acknowledge that."

Arms-Colin nods, rubbing his goatee as Dragon switches focus.

"And Barnaby, sometimes the best thing you can do for someone is take a step back. If the cafeteria had turned into an out and out fight, Gallant might have had to use his powers. That would put everything and everyone he cares about in danger. We understand that you didn't have much time to think, but of course the Protectorate would keep a close eye on the school most of the Wards go to. I personally don't think you made the wrong choice per say, after all you did de-escalate an unmasked supervillain fight without exposing your identity or even actually fighting. That's good, but you did it in a very risky way. We're not asking you to not help people. You've just got to give a bit more thought to the risks next time, okay?"

"Alright?"

"Yes, thank you."
"Uh, yeah."

"Wonderful. I'll leave you two to it then."

And then it's like she was never even there. You've got a slightly sheepish looking Armsmaster in front of you, stroking his beard and muttering as he stares at something you can't quite see. You think he might have fallen into "planning mode."
You can hear Missy on the console in the other room.

Well, you've got the rest of the day off? You guess?

You clear your throat after a few seconds of Armsmaster muttering to himself on the couch and muttering to himself with a blank look. You get the feeling he'd be there for a while, so a quick reminder of the outside world's existence might do him some good. He shakes himself out of his own head after the third time he hears you, grunting an apology.

There's still some distance between the two of you, but you think you've got the perfect recipe to fix that.
"Hey Armsmaster, I get that this might seem a bit presumptuous, but do you want to come and do some tinkering?"

"Yes, Assault is taking my patrol shift, so I'm free for a few hours. I was actually planning on asking you later, since we'll be patrolling together tomorrow. It'd give me an opportunity to take a look through what you've done so far and maybe narrow down the specifics of your specialty."

It sounds like a good idea to you, so you lead the way into the Wards workshop, before going over the Big Board of IdeasTM that you and Chris set up, discussing the pros and cons of a few thoughts you've had with the senior Tinker.

[Breakthroughs are ways of unlocking enhanced functionality in your powers. Quite simply, your Tinker specialty is busted by virtue of only being partially Manton Limited. Do good enough and your functionality will expand. Breakthroughs level up a single avenue of your tinkering. Tinkering avenues are rated one to five. A five is Hero or Bonesaw levels of bullshit. three is average.]

The plates of alloy the fabricator creates are covered in a thin layer (Almost imperceptible) of goop that forces chemical bonds to do fucky shit. That's how it can turn anything into a metal, despite being fed with anything from wood to meat. You can extract this liquid if you make something that'll hold it. Essentially having disintegrator goop. That's why it's listed as a chemical mix on the pastebin.
>>
>>3267814
Cool thanks for the explanation. We can totally give some to Armsmaster and say "go nuts!" for nanothorn shit later, or better.
>>
"...Hey, stop trying to disassemble my fabricator."

"Sorry, had a bit of a moment... have you tried using a thinner casing? Inconel's rated almost three times stronger than steel, you don't need it to be nearly as thick as it is. It's shock absorption you're looking for, anything that tries to stab it will knock it off first."

You know, speaking of Fabricators...

"That neurotoxin of yours is fascinating, have you found a good delivery method?

"No, well yes technically. I have a design for a dispersion grenade system but they're too big for pockets.

"Have you tried Manufacturing them on the spot? Like with your Gauntlet? It'd need a larger storage tank for the materiel required, but it'd be worth it I think. Give you some useful offensive ability."

Now that's a hell of an idea.

...
"The machinery for that design would be too large to fit in the frame.
"Not if you shave half an inch off the inside of the casing, pass it over."
...
"How are you going to refill it?
"I was just going to attach it into the main fabricator. If we're going to have this small of a storage tank we're going to have to accept that it can't be refilled in the field. Maybe I can create something later, but we want this done by tomorrow, so eh."
...
"I may not have the best grasp on aesthetics outside of power armour, but that hat looks terrible on you. A top hat would give us more space to work with as well."
"Good point, don't know what I was thinking."

[Magician's Hat]
A black top hat with a thin purple band around the outside, the true magic however comes from within. Per excursion, contains [one] charge[s]. Charges can be spent to materialise Chemical mixtures and an appropriate delivery method. I.E a hypodermic needle containing a dose of STRONGMAN or a grenade filled with SMILE. Or hypodermic needle full of MOLECULAR DESTABILISER.

After it's finished, you feel the usual sense of satisfaction at bringing something into the world. You also feel like your relationship with Armsmaster has gotten just a bit better.

It's all about applications. You gotta remember that Tinker power is "create tech shit related to specialization" and "scan other parahuman powers to somewhat replicate and incorporate into tech shit you create". Barnaby does NOT molecularly dissolve shit or dismantle stuff himself, he is only human - that's a misconception I think some people might have from reading what his power does. The reality is that objects and devices Barnaby creates, have properties and applications that involve molecular processing. From what One Bad Day showed us, Barnaby's shard power is focused on "changing" to achieve a better state or function - though this could be wholly different in this continuity. Tinker powers and processes are also a form of black box actions, because the technology and results involved are themselves not a product of humanity, being from previous alien races and civilizations that got CYCLE'D to annihilation. A lot to think about and consider in regards to what Barnaby might be able to pull off. Definitely worthy of a thread discussion, honestly.

It does. The friendship that could have been.

You're made aware over your Wards phone that you'll not be attending school today, instead you'll be with Armsmaster for pretty much the entire day as you go over the basics of heroing. This is it, the first day of your superhero career. You have to admit, looking in the mirror at the costume that you made, well... You look the part.

Your subtly armoured ringmaster suit fits almost perfectly, with only a few minor alterations needed before it was damn near perfect. Your right arm is covered by the Madman's Hand while your whisperer's chain hangs from a breast pocket, lending you just a touch of class. Your hat fits well enough that you think it ought not to fall off, although you should probably grab onto it if you're planning on doing any acrobatics. It's a good thing it got approved so quickly.

Lastly, you affix your shining Inconel Mask, temporarily replacing your everpresent smile with a similar, but synthetic one. It's time to rock.

You meet Armsmaster and Kid Win(being as he's now in costume) up on the main deck of the RIG, Chris in his Shining red and gold armour with his hoverboard under his arm. Both of them have full gear on and are ready to go.

Armsmaster, for those not in the know. Has a set of blue and silver power armour with a knightly motif to it. He drives the biggest goddamn motorbike you've ever seen and wields a halberd full of weird sci-fi shit. He's The Knight of The Bay. Then there's kid win, imagine if Iron Man used pistols and a hoverboard, boom.

Armsmaster gives you a long look before nodding approvingly and telling you to get on the back of his bike.

Chris is rather less stoic and immediately begins quizzing you on your new tech, being by far the most interested in your hat and gauntlet. Apparently the idea of building stuff in the field really resonates with him.

The three of you ride at a reasonable pace over the force bridge and onto the Boardwalk, stopping once you hit solid ground. It's once you're back on dry land that Armsmaster starts talking along with you and Chris.

"Today should be a fairly easy patrol, I've set us up a route that goes around most of the city so that I can talk you through hotspots and so we have plenty of time to go over standard procedure. Here." He passes you a small earpiece, which you stick in. "Normally you would be connected to Console with this, but today you're just with me and Kid Win."

After that he segues into more technical stuff regarding communications. Passwords for priority connections, codes for villain sightings and so on. People wave and take pictures as you pass which is kind of distracting, but you're still able to wrap your head around most of it. You're about halfway through a more in depth explanation of the PRT threat rating system (turns out that there's a weird overlap between Stranger and Master) when you turn off the main road and accelerate suddenly.
Cont
>>
You try and ask what exactly the fuck is going on, but you've just accelerated from about thirty miles an hour to almost a hundred, so air is a scarce commodity, luckily today's patrol leader is more than willing to provide details. You see from the side that his helmet appears to have folded down over his mouth, allowing him to speak. Lucky bastard. "An alarm just went off at the Brockton Bay museum of modern Art. We're being rerouted to investigate." He stops for a moment before clarifying. "By me, that is."

"Who'd steal from a modern art museum?" Your hovering companion queries from above. "It's not like they're priceless paintings or anything, most of it's just junk."

"Accord buys stolen modern art so he can destroy it sometimes. It happened a few times while I was up in Boston. Apparently he shares your view on the subject. But adds his trademark... enthusiasm, of course.

And with that you find yourself driving down Museum Street, named for exactly what you think. They're all a bit shit compared to the ones up in Boston, apart from maybe the Brockton Villainous Parahuman Museum. That one's pretty good just by virtue of sheer quantity if nothing else. You saw their exhibit on Allfather once for a field trip. One kid got in trouble for doing a roman salute, it was great.

A minute or so later and you stop in front of the Brockton Museum of Modern Art. Like most buildings in this area of town it is simultaneously brand new and clearly dilapidated, the beautiful marble walls and pillars only marred by the hole where the front door used to be, a large black van taking up space just inside the lobby. There's a very scared looking desk manager there, along with two other custodians tied up with rope.

Also in the room are three black masked individuals with pistols. Which is slightly more worrying.

The goons don't seem to notice you yet, possibly due to the fact that Armsmaster's bike went from incredibly loud to totally silent as you made your approach. The three goons are currently looking around the room, one of them at the front desk and another looking after the hostages while the last one checks a closet, presumably to see if they've missed anyone.

"Kid Win, stay by Card Shark. I'll free the hostages, you take out the other one near the back. Card Shark, this should be easy, if you feel like pitching in then do so, but feel free to stick back and observe."
And just like that, they're off. Chris zooming upwards towards the large frontal window, while Armsmaster calmly dismounts the bike and begins walking towards the ruined front door.

Well shit.

Hey li'l mama lemme whisper in ya ear.

You decide that just sitting back as your teammates go in and fix everything isn't quite your style due to being both (a)not very heroic and (b)kinda lame. Unfortunately, you also lack any kind of protection against bullets, which narrows down your options a bit. You don't want to use neurotoxins on hostages for reasons that should be obvious. (not to mention what'll be said if any of the criminals belong to minority groups.) You also don't want to jab Armsmaster or Kid Win with (relatively) untested combat stimulants.

In the end, you decide that an enemy who's dizzy as fuck is one less to worry about. And so as you creep closer to the destroyed doorway, you resolve to use your whisperer to distract the bad guys.

At least that's what you're going to do, before a click from your gadget informs you that outside of the three hostages, there are no other signatures inside of the gallery. You focus a bit more intently and notice a detail that thoroughly disquiets you. The guard looking over the hostages is looping. Since you got here maybe half a minute ago, this guy has performed the same exact action of scratching his head then turning around three times now.

They're probably holograms of some kind, your Tinker brain supplies. Imagine the potential applications if you could get a hold of the projector. You wonder whether it uses a form of particle control or another, more esoteric method.

Something like that could be used to do all kinds of things. A holographic clone could be a decoy that allows you to outmanoeuvre your enemies or even...

It could be bait for a trap.

You bring your hand up to your earpiece, but you're just not fast enough to warn the others. You see Armsmaster turn around a pillar before leaping onto the hostage hologram, at almost the exact same time Chris fires a laser at the furthest goon. Both of their attacks impact with satisfying whack noises, but things quickly deteriorate as you watch.

As soon as Armsmaster's halberd connects with the goon, it pops into a haze of strange fractals and eye-watering patterns. Those fractals then condense at the impact point and quickly travel up the blade, only stopping when he's forced to not only drop his weapon, but also jettison his gauntlets, pulling some sort of quick-release as they're left floating in the air while wrapped around his weapon.

Chris is strangely even worse off, the strange patterns from the burst goon travelling up the beam from his pistol as he tries to break the connection. He's not fast enough though, and it's not long before he's covered in a sort of stasis field identical to that containing Armsmaster's gauntlets and Halberd. Face frozen in a look that someone who's never heard of Gray Boy might find humorous.

[Kid Win:Trapped in Unknown Effect]

You and Armsmaster both shout out that it's a trap in synchronicity, far too late to make any real difference.

You hear an ear shattering bang, and similar patterns start to slowly flow over the museum's outside walls. Starting at the top and working their way down past the walls. You quickly realise that Armsmaster won't be able to get out in time, being several meters inside the lobby. You find yourself faced with a split second decision.

>In, with Armsmaster.

A split second later you watch as whatever this field is covers over the last entrance to the Brockton Bay Modern Art museum, Wards phone in hand as you call the PRT for backup. "This is Card Shark, Armsmaster's trapped inside the museum and Kid Win is locked in some kind of stasis field, we're going to need reinforcements."

It's not long after that you receive a worrying status report. The rest of the Protectorate's adult heroes are currently responding to Lung downtown while the other active Wards run backup and rescue duty. Apparently they'll send a few squads of troopers, but for now at least you're on your own. The current orders are to stay put and (given that you're a Tinker) try to find a way of freeing Kid Win.

Shit.

You aren't entirely without options though. You may not have your workshop, but your gauntlet and helmet fabricators might be able to make something if you can figure out what exactly you're trying to do.

>Take a look at either Kid Win or the Museum's energy field thing. Give that shit a scan.

After a few goes at trying and failing to contact your more immediate superior, you give it up and start prodding the stasis field with a stick, ready to drop it if it goes all, uh. Stasisy. Your first discovery is that no such thing occurs, whatever caused it to start spreading seems to stop after the first trigger. Secondly after a bit of poking, prodding and other such scientific observations, you deduce that the field isn't actually real stasis. You figure this one out by realising that while it does cover Chris' mouth, the field itself is porous and you can feel his breath.

That's pretty reassuring too, it means he isn't dead.

After yet more poking, this time with a finger, you begin to feel your mind slip into that same calm and almost trancelike state that often precedes Tinkering. You pull yourself back, not wanting to fall into the state, but for just a second you understood what this thing actually is. It actually runs on a similar process to what you'd do if you had to create a forcefield.

[Agent Of Chaos Armour modification L4 revealed : Molecular interference Field.]

An external source (one you'd probably guess was part of the hologram goons) shapes a field of particles into a thin and porous, but almost diamond hard field that hovers a few millimetres, maybe half an inch above Chris' skin that stops any attempt at movement. he's probably still conscious inside.

You'd hazard a guess that the field covering the Museum's entrance was similar in it's operation, maybe with a bigger projector though.

Now what to do?
Backup in the form of PRT troopers will arrive in ten minutes.

You stand back, looking up at Chris as he stays suspended a good metre or so up in the air above you. Cutting him out seems like a tricky proposition at first, but it's fairly manageable after a bit of parkour. He was originally frozen partway through falling off his board, which conveniently puts him lying down and facing upwards. Now straddling his waist, you quickly manufacture a small scalpel using your Madman's hand before placing just a drop of Molecular destabiliser on the edge of the blade, which smokes a bit, but is otherwise fine.

[Magician's hat Charge not used.]

"Just hold on man, I'll get you out of there as carefully as I can." You reassure him, searching his wide eyes for some form of acknowledgement. "I'll assume you hear me and everything. and I promise I'll be really gentle, alright?" There's no sound and his breathing speeds up, so you figure that what little encouragement you're giving might be being ruined by your minor giggles.

Holding onto his shoulder, you lean forwards and start cutting him out of his molecular prison.
.......

A few minutes later, a slightly flushed looking Chris is back on the ground and out of the effect, supervising as you cut his hoverboard out of it's own private mini prison. You figure that the only partially porous nature of the field might have made it somewhat uncomfortably warm inside, given his suit's power systems. Not to mention his hoverboard engines.
At least you kept your laughter as silent shakes and shudders rather than full on belly laughs. That might have made surgery this delicate rather dangerous.

"Uh... th-thanks? that was kinda scary actually. Good to know it wasn't real time manipulation." Chris seems a bit uncomfortable still, but rapidly collects himself as he jumps back onto his hoverboard, doing a rad kickflip. "So uh, think you can do that again with the big one?"

"I think so, give me a second." A quick stab at the door barrier, and you're through, a hole cut in the barrier that both you and Chris can head in through. Distressingly, there's still nothing from Armsmaster.

Now that you can see inside, it's even more distressing. The Museum lobby, once beautiful in marble. Is now covered in explosion marks, shards of the strange materiel that comprised the "stasis" fields and bits of containment foam here and there as well. The hostages are nowhere to be seen and neither is Armsmaster. You can hear explosions and crashes from further in however, and a woman screaming.

Chris give you a look as the blood drains from his face, shifting uncomfortably on his board as you both tarry in the entryway.

"So uh, are we going in?"

"You're the senior Ward here man. Why are you asking me?"

"I mean uh... We're going In. Yeah"

And so the two of you charge forwards, into the winding corridors and lacklustre displays of a small city's modern art museum.

It's surprisingly difficult to actually find the fight once you're in the museum. All noises including your own footsteps echo like crazy on the tiled floors and high stone ceilings. Far too many times you think the confrontation is happening just around the next corner or in the next display when instead it's nowhere near you.

Eventually however you manage to find your team leader, shepherding a small group of six or seven civilians away from a madwoman with a grenade launcher. Armsmaster is still in fighting shape, but seems far more preoccupied with dodging explosives and keeping them away from the civilians than anything else. Further complicating the matter is the three goons you assume the earlier holograms were based on, all armed with SMG's. They're still in black, but they also have a variant of the ABB's insignia on the body armour they're wearing, a red snake on a green background.

The villainess herself (you can tell due to her skintight black suit) is currently silent, with the occasional grunt of frustration as your boss bats one of her grenades out of the air or deflects them away with the back end of a microphone stand that he's replaced his signature weapon with.

You've come up behind them, but a minion spots you before you can properly take advantage and they peel off, leaving Armsmaster to their boss as you and Chris get into a fighting position.

Kid Win laughs as he seems to effortlessly weave around every shot from the now thoroughly panicked thug, flying in intricate and impressive displays as he turns round to fire one last shot at shitbag #3, until one of the smg rounds hits his armored boot. Knocking him off of his hoverboard and sending him ass over elbows to the ground.
STUNNED

As the thug advances on your grounded ally, you climb up one of the displays and leap, landing heavily on the thug with an armor plated elbow. A knee to the stomach bends him double, and you finish him with a heavy right from your gauntlet clad fist. Blood and teeth spray from his mouth, and he's down for the count.

Combat End
Victory?

As the last of the thugs is dispatched, you turn to see what's been going on while you've been distracted.

Armsmaster and the unknown villain are at each other's throats now, The civilians long gone. Apparently he's managed to stop her long enough for them to escape, or at least get somewhere that isn't here. This both is and isn't a good thing. She's gone properly nutso now, ranting and raving about how the world will never understand her "genius" and how she's the only one who truly matters in this world. It's almost cartoonishly stereotypical actually. She also happens to be throwing out explosives with distressing regularity, just hurling them about as if they're going out of style. Just getting close would be dangerous, but then again, she's going up against Armsmaster and while you might not hold him to the same lofty heights as before you were a cape well...

He's an absolute monster, now that he doesn't have to worry about civilians.

He's dodging explosions left and right, normally you'd expect fists against grenade launcher to be a bit of an unfair match, but he's moving almost faster than you can even see. If any of those explosives touch him you'd expect him to go down sure. But none of have yet.

>Maybe you should help, this might be troublesome.
>Stay back, you'd just be another distraction.

>>3276971

You grab Chris by the hand and pull him up as you run towards the explosions, a decision you both almost immediately regret as you're winged with shrapnel and burnt. (-10% each)

After a few moments of spine chilling, bowel emptying fear, you and your compatriot find yourselves side to side with Armsmaster, the villainess-

"I... BAKUDA! Am the great-"

Bakuda standing opposite you on top of a plinth near one of the displays. The three of you are stood in the middle of a large display room, although what it's supposed to be displaying is entirely questionable now that explosives have thoroughly ruined it.

"I'll admit I wasn't expecting any Wards at my initiation, but funnily enough I don't think the boss will mind. Dead heroes are dead heroes."

"Killing these Wards would be the single worst thing you could possibly do, We'd actually get reinforcements for on-"

"Do you think I really care! You're all just ants to me, and anyone that they send will be an ant too!"

Then, with a final cackle, she brings up the launcher.

There's a thing called timezones and we aren't required to chitchat between every vote, or even vote at all. If what you want already has a majority there's no need to get involved.

The three of you move in opposite directions as Bakuda lifts her grenade launcher with alarming speed, a blinking red projectile flying out of the barrel accompanied by a thoroughly uncomfortable keening sound. You and Chris jump, but you both freeze for a second too long when deciding what direction to jump. You can see the demise approaching you and your life flashes in front of your life as you take a step backwards.

Then Armsmaster's there. He's caught right in the midst of the attack, sent flying after stepping in front of the high explosive charge and taking it instead of you Wards. You can see his breastplate crack and turn black as he sails past you and Chris, a wordless cry echoing from his lips. (-45) STUNNNED

Bakuda goes to stand up, but you and Chris are already on the case. You sprint up while taking aim, using all your momentum to deliver a crushing boot to Bakuda's ribcage. She retches and reaches for the launcher but you grab it out her hand and swing it like a baseball bat, bringing it down heavily on her spine. -60%

She pushes you away and rips the launcher out of your hand, but she clearly can't see all that well, possibly because her vision is blocked with sick. She reaches down for a grenade, but she's just not fast enough.

Chris is getting in on this as well, charging both pistols up to one hundred percent and swinging in between you and the mad bomber who takes a step backwards before she's lifted up and flung against the opposite wall, nearly four metres away. -120%

Kid Win himself is also flung backwards off of his board, but he rolls to his feet and calls it back under him.

The two of you watch Bakuda intently, waiting for her to get up or unveil some hideous explosive monstrosity. She twitches a bit, but otherwise stays down. Chris takes a step forwards to cuff her or foam her, but he stops as a dark clothed figure materialises out of ash, a ninja wearing a grinning oni mask. He quickly kicks Bakuda's grenade launcher up and into his hands

Oni Lee.

He points the grenade launcher at Armsmaster's prone form before tilting his head and sidling over to Bakuda's still form. He checks her for a pulse, before nodding and pulling her onto his shoulder.

Kid Win's back to looking nervous and unsure, shooting you a look out of the corner of his eyes. His pistols still cooling from their recent exertion.

You shrug at Chris, edging your way towards Armsmaster as Oni Lee fucks off through a window, the barrier having cracked and splintered with Bakuda's unconsciousness. After he's gone you rush over, waving Chris over to deal with the unconscious goon squad. A task he takes to with aplomb, retrieving a pair of seriously heavy duty handcuffs from his utility belt.

Armsmaster's in pretty bad shape. He's not conscious, having conked out at some point during the stand off with Oni Lee. He's got serious burns, but far more pressing is the shrapnel peppering his neck, lower face and armpits. His breastplate is cracked and burnt but still entirely intact below the surface level. Unfortunately it couldn't protect him everywhere. He's in serious danger, but if you get him to a hospital soon he might be alright.

On the other hand, you could take in on yourself to uh... tidy him up a bit.
By falling into a Tinker fugue over his body. And use your disinegrator scalpel. Probably.

He might not like that you decided to use him as your first proper biotinkering experiment.

"Hey Chris, Armsmaster's in a really bad way and I'm... kind of a biotinker? We don't have time to bring him to a hospital or anything, so uh, can you give me a shake if I start doing anything that's not just putting him back together?"

That was not what you expected to come out the newbie's mouth. For a brief second you're overcome with jealousy, but it quickly subsides as you give Colin's life signs a look. Your weak bullshit doesn't matter right now, time to do hero stuff. Man up.

You take a deep breath, then kneel down by your distressingly hot teammate.
"Okay, just wake you up if you start going full Bonesaw right? Sounds easy enough."

It's interesting watching Barnaby work. The fact he even asked for your help is proof enough that he has the opposite problem to you. Where Kid Win can't stay on project, Card Shark gets way too into whatever he's doing. You've had Tinker fugues before, all Tinkers have. You've never heard of someone who just lost that time like he does though, or someone who needs other people to wake them up.

It takes a few minutes, and gives you ample time to reflect on how bullcrap his goddamn speciality is. "Hurr molecules, also I'm a biotinker." Seriously, everything is molecules how is that even remotely fair.

Oh wait, he's going up to the brain, slap his hands. Where were you?

A beep from your pistol gets your attention, the readout on the side stating that it's good to fire again.
Huh, maybe you should work on the recoil more. A gun's no good if it throws you off your hoverboard. Maybe you should just make a rifle, then you'd be able to put shock absorbers in the stock, or even the barrel as well. That'd be nice.

Hell getting it past HR though. Slap hands away from Armsmaster's eyes.

"He has 20/20 vision as far as I know."

Card Shark lets out a dry chuckle as he shakes his head, muttering a quiet "thanks" as you stop him from carving someone's eyes out with a dis-integrator knife. Frigging hell.

Maybe you should make something like that? A melee weapon for when stuff gets up close and personal. Some kind of baton maybe? It'd be pretty quick and easy to make an electrified stick of some kind to knock people out with.

Then again, your pistols close range setting does do pretty well for itself if what happened to little miss explosion (also distressingly hot, but in a mad scientisty kind of way.) has anything to say for itself. At least your Haywire grenades worked out well. Really well actually. If only you could find some way of extending the effect, slowing down the energy transfer so it doesn't burn itself out so fast.

"I think that's all I can do here, let's get him to the doctors."

Oh, that was quick. You can only just begin to hear sirens.

It's weird how fast some fights can happen. You've been in a few now that only took like half a minute and it always feels weird. Like you're simultaneously glad it's over and wish there was more. Huh.

I guess this is a jab at how quick fights go in the quest, AND how stressful situations tend to go by at surreal paces in real life, AND this is the nature of cape fights in general regardless of medium, AND Kid Win canonically has ADD so of course he would feel that way.

This is how I see this. The Merchants have always been the ones to be kicked around. If we get a spotter to keep us from unnecessarily slicing someone up until we heal them? Good! If they let us continue experimenting on someone? 50/50 change of something good or bad happening. Besides. How many doctors do the Merchants have available to treat all their injuries and sicknesses? We'd be practically doing something good.

"I think that's all I can do here, let's get him to the doctors."

It's strange hearing your own voice talking without you, but at this point you're mostly used to how your own body just stops working with you when you use your powers. Sometimes you feel more like a voice in the background yelling instructions to someone else than a person really in control, but there's not much you can really do about it now. Or ever actually.

What a hideously morbid thought.

You shake your head and stand, Chris pulling you up with one hand as you stretch and crack your knuckles. Your fingers slightly cramped from holding onto the improvised scalpel.
You've got the shrapnel in your other hand, seven pieces of cheap quality shitty steel. It's almost insulting really. Here you are using only the finest of hypothetical superalloys when some other bitch just sticks some shitty chinese stuff around her bomb and calls it a day.

This is why people buy American.

You give a quick report once the paramedics and PRT goons arrive, supplemented at times by Chris' recording of everything that went on. It's actually rather embarassing at times actually, one of the female troopers wolf whistles when you climb on Chris to cut him out of the stasis field. Then it gets worse when the two of you go up against the ABB gangsters, several of said troopers bursting out into laughter upon seeing you faceplant after trying to punch Shitbag #1.

Oddly, the aforementioned female trooper whistles at that too.
...

Three hours later, you and Chris collapse onto the sofa in the Wards lounge, Carlos and Shadow Stalker having went out as you came in, greeting you with a high five from Carlos and a weird look from miss shy. You give her a smile and hope she comes around soon, hopefully she'll feel up to talking with you at some point.
[Barnaby is still under the delusion that Shadow Stalker is just shy.]

"Holy shit that was crazy."
Yeah, he can say that again.

"I know I'm one of them, but where the hell are all these Tinkers coming from man? I mean think about it, the PRT's got three now, four if you count Dauntless. The ABB has one and the Merchants have one. That's five, maybe six Tinkers in one city."

Chris shrugs, controlling his hoverboard over to the fridge, where it retrieves a can of coke for him. Fucking hell, take a look at Tinker 12 over here.
"The bay's been bad for a while man, Tinkers are supposed to come from long term shit. Guess everyone's waking up at once."

Makes sense you guess. Still, something kinda feels off about that explanation. I mean, yeah you had it bad for a while, but you got your powers after one bad day. It doesn't quite fit. You go to say that, but decide that maybe you're talking out your ass. Maybe you should look up how powers are supposed to work at some point

"So what do we do now?

"Wait, I guess. We've given a report and if Piggot wanted to yell at us she'd have called us to her office by now."

Apart from that, the afternoon is our oyster."

Huh, well in that case...

I honestly really like the more relaxed pace and nature of the Wards over the timelines where Barnaby ran a gang. It leaves a lot more time for interactions whereas it was a constant fight for survival in the other ones.

We need 4 TP to upgrade our Bio focus so I feel like we should wait just a bit for tinkering. I won't be heartbroken if that wins though.

"Hey, so I was thinking."

"Yeah?"

"You've helped me with my tinkering a bunch now, I was wondering if there was something I could help you out with? Those stun grenades from earlier were radical, but they didn't seem to stun for that long." You're a bit careful, saying this. You don't want to piss off your new tinker buddy.

"Oh, I was actually thinking about that too, they're pretty great yeah but the range on them isn't as good as I'd like it to be, or the duration of the electrification. I had a few ideas for making it better, it'd be great to have a partner."

It's an interesting experience, keeping yourself out of the trance while watching another person work. Instead of the flashes and snippets you usually get, you're fully cognisant of the entire experience. It's thoroughly fascinating really. It's not like your brain has stopped feeding you info and ideas either, it's just not taking control and letting you actually build anything.

Most of your time is spent looking over Chris' shoulder and helping him stay on track, but you take enough looks at the blueprints themselves that they happen to give you a few ideas of your own for more efficient mechanisms and storage in similar applicators.

The two of you are bent over the half finished design, sketching through the design and running numbers as your joint creation slowly takes shape in front of you. It's been thoroughly uncooperative so far, both you and Chris unable to find a way of properly slowing the voltage release without reducing the power of the blast. The problem seems to be that the grenade is initially created to function by jettisoning its entire electrical charge at once, creating a stunning elecromagnetic field strong enough to affect the human nervous system.

Unfortunately, this means it uses all it's charge up at once, and if it doesn't render the subject unconscious then they can just get up as soon as the charge leaves their system. Essentially the classic problem with Tasers.

Both you and Chris have had to take more than a few breaks, your patience with this bullshit is running thin, and you can see a defeated look in his eyes.

"Come on man, let's just call it off. My stuff's always like this, it never works out to just keep screwing with it. Best case scenario it explodes."

You can't accept that, you've spent too damn long on this to admit a loss now.
"No, we're close I know it. It's just a jumped up electric coil! This should be easy.

Then you hear a tone you've never quite got from Chris before.
"Yeah well it's not okay!? We don't all have the luxury of just turning our brains off and pulling bullshit out of our back pocket! Some of us have to actually work for it!..."
You turn to see him pacing now, fists clenched as he leans heavily on one of the desks, shouting in rage as he stares not at you, but your Fabricator.
"Look at this, the first thing you built and it's already better than anything I've made. What the FUCK!"
He punctuates the end of his sentence by picking up a partially assembled pistol from his side of the workshop and hurling it at the plastic bin containing his other failures.
"What the hell even do I do? Shitty laser guns and-"

click...

You both freeze. Then look over at the bin.
It doesn't explode, so that's one thing that could be about to happen ruled out.

"Uh..."
"Maybe we should be a bit more careful?"
"Yeah."

"I'm gonna check it out."

"Fuckin'... yeah dude. I'll stay over here though."

You see him get up, and very carefully walk over to the bin. Now you can't see what's actually happened, so the only thing to go off of at first is his reaction to whatever has happened.

At first he seems confused, then ecstatic, then confused again.

Then he pulls it out.

"Fucking hell."

"That's not a gun, it's a volcano with a handhold! Careful you don't drop it, we need the earth for standing on."

Cont when I wake up.

Oh and what are your thoughts on making a scanner, like in Ward? Something to analyze other parahuman powers more effectively, spot power-based traps and shit, and use it to create Tinkertech based on their powers? It would be combining Barnaby's Molecular Processor with whatever outside power is scanned. For instance, the thing in Ward is Cradle's severing energy Blaster power + Disjoint's anatomy detachment and teleport Blaster power = energy whip that dismembers people alive and that's pretty much the sole biggest example I can think of where another cape's Tinker-scanned power is actually put to use for fucking once.

>>3277911
>It takes a few minutes, and gives you ample time to reflect on how bullcrap his goddamn speciality is. "Hurr molecules, also I'm a biotinker." Seriously, everything is molecules how is that even remotely fair.

I was wondering about this part since the beginning of the quest as well. Tinkers generally have a narrow specialty (or specialties) based around a single concept.

Okay so molecular SOMETHING. That's a fucking broad field. Pretty much any effect can fall under the description. Just compare it to any other tinker and comes out crazy OP.
I mean it's already too late in the quest for existing things to start making sense (molecular healing people, molecular auditory hallucinations, molecular laughing gases and neurotoxins) but the specialty could still be salvaged.

Yeah it may come off as a "stop having fun" rant but jerking off to potential omnipotence that doesn't follow the rules of the story universe isn't terribly fun to read. Look at Kid Win here in the same thread. Or even Armsmaster. They obey the rules and are reasonable as tinker characters.
>>
>>3279132
Our specialty is molecular bonds. For most Tinkers that's presumably OP true, but so is Modular design, or "efficiency" or Hero's Bullshit "Wavelength manipulation".

Some powers are just more easily exploitable than others, but all powers can become HAX bullshit if the person that has it is willing to munchkin hard enough.

Hell look at little miss "my power is controlling bugs" for a crash course in that madness. And she didn't even exploit the kind of bullshit you could get into when you can call an army of crabs to shore without lifting a finger. The woman could have been rolling in money if it wasn't for the "CONFLICT CONFLICT CONFLICT" alarm going on in the back of her fucking head.

We can go back and forth about power levels and rules all day, but when Kid Win can make a Lego Spartan Laser with 2 weeks and a bit of funding it's kind of redundant.
>>
>>3279132
>omnipotence
what has our character done so far that would even remotely qualify as omnipotence or op ?
>>3279132
>they obey the rules
which rules exactly

it's also not like there aren't people like contessa, glaistig uaine and eidolon running around
>>
>>3279128
actually, that's a point, How much do we know about the whole bullying thing? Like, we didn't recognise Taylor, but would we A:recognise Sophia from school once she actually unmasks to us and B: know that she's been on one of them 18 month abuse binges?

Cause I'll take any chance I can get to fuck her over
>>
>>3279223
>Hero's Bullshit "Wavelength manipulation".
In this defense, he did get the original cauldron vial though.

Are you the wendigo crab guy?

It was less about power levels and more about how specialty corresponds with the kind of toys that were created.

>>3279235
I said _potential_ omnipotence because there is no limit to bullshit that can be wiggled for with that kind of power eventually. Its presently not OP but limitless and lets be honest has only the most vague thing to do with Barnaby's tinker spec.

The rules governing the fictional universe of Worm.

So you're comparing a quest MC to the most powerful parahumans in the story.
>>
>>3279223
>call an army of crabs to shore
Call the boys over at Wendigo
>>
>>3279246
To be fair, we've only been tinkering for, what, a couple of weeks? We'll run into our limitation sooner or later, don't you worry. Heck, we might have run into it already and we just haven't put it together yet. If Chris can miss his speciality for months on end we can miss our limitation for just as long without realising it. Especially if we're only making what our power hands to us on a silver platter and not trying to find something ourselves.
>>
>>3279128

>>
>>3279246
>So you're comparing a quest MC to the most powerful parahumans in the story.

Yes I am because, as Flechette/Foil, Sleeper, and even the goddamn Fairy Queen proved in story, you can get bullshit powers completely at random. You don't have to be a special snowflake or some shit like that, don't even have to be a Cauldron Cape, the shard chooses you not the other way around.

So yes the Quest MC does have the potential to become one of the most broken Capes in the world, and that's completely within the Worm rule set.
>>
Allow me to weigh in on this.>>3279246
You actual speciality is "chemical bond manipulation" and "reconstruction". The Whisperer works by doing that on a small level at range to a specific, preselected target.

Essentially, you're meant to either A :Make chemical mixes and things that facilitate their use.

Or B:Overhaul stuff. Literally. If you were a striker you'd be Overhaul from bnha. You take things apart and put them back better.

Lastly, all Tinkers are bullshit.
Armsmaster can make anything as long as it can be described as "efficient" or "miniaturised"

Bakuda can make anything, as long as it works once and can be said to explode.

Even the humble kid Win, who's thing is modular design can be pretty busted too. Because he also has rapid construction as a focus. Dude circumvents the number one weakness of Tinkers, that they build all their stuff in advance. Most tinkers need to go home to build something that'll beat you, Kid Win at 100% can do it in front of you during a lull in the fighting.

Yeah Tinkers are pretty bullshit. But I think I've managed to keep the power levels alright so far.
I appreciate the concern though, and I take on board what you're saying. Balancing this stuff is kind of a tightrope and it gets kinda difficult at times.
You do have the potential to be one of the most powerful capes in the setting yes, but it'll be fairly slow, and you're going to have to work for it.

That little bit was supposed to be a funny nod, not spark all this controversy.
>>
So if my math is right we'd need
20 TP for Lv 5 Chem
36 TP for Lv 5 Mech
60 TP for Lv 5 Bio

>If you were a striker you'd be Overhaul from bnha. You take things apart and put them back better.

>>
>>3279294
A normal fight against a few guys and one cape got you two and could have got you three.

Surviving an Endbringer fight?
God forbid killing one of those things?
Slaughterhouse Nine?
Lung?

High level threats'll give more points sure, but it's also supposed to be a lot, and to take a while for that level of stuff.

Reminder that level of bullshit would make you a fucked up mix of Bonesaw, Iron Man and the entire cast of Big Hero Six. That's super endgame, and we're still early game.
>>

The first thing you notice about the gun is how perfectly it fits together, the front half looks like a gun barrel sure, and the back half is clearly the half finished laser gun Chris threw away, but as the two of you look under the hood there's far more to it. The dust cover comes away and flips up easily, revealing all sorts of slots and spaces for further modification. It's currently missing a power source and Chris can barely lift the damn thing, but it looks like a hell of an invention.

"That's a hell of a rifle, looks like it's got slots to put stuff in as well."

He gives you a long look, before letting out a chuckle and going back over the mystery weapon.

"Yeah, the uh. The machinery looks like the guts of an old harness I was designing a few months back. I was going to attach these arms to it to carry stuff and manipulate stuff for me. I was going to use multiple power sources to use space more economically but look." He points to the various slots and missing parts. "It should be able to be powered by the pistol charge pack, none of these missing bits make sense for a rifle. It needs focusing coils and resonance chambers, they're all missing though. It's like a uh..."

His eyes go wide, and you can see that same euphoria that always hits you in his eyes.
"A shell, like an empty thing waiting to be filled. With whatever I want."

There's a long silent moment before you slowly raise your hand, the palm flat and fingers extended. "Yeah, I'm gonna need a high five here buddy. Don't leave me hanging."

And leave you hanging he does not.

The two of you continue to tinker for a while longer, swiftly discovering that the new grenade design fits into one of the slots on what Chris has decided to name the [Variable Rifle], turning it into a sort of explosive electro-cannon. Three more satisfying words were never said, barring the uncontested and holy "usually vehicle mounted."

You're interrupted from your work when Armsmaster comes through into the Workshop, seemingly none the worse for wear under his armour, though you can still see a few cracks on his breastplate from where the bomb hit him. He gives the Variable Rifle a long look before waving the two of you through to the common room.

>asking Greg Vader for anything
>>
You're expecting a "Hey, what the fuck did you do to me." or a "Why would you jump in like that, now I've been grenaded". Instead he just asks you and Chris to recount the day's events from your own perspectives. It gets a bit awkward once he has you go through how you pulled the shrapnel out of him while in a Tinker fugue, but he reassures you in his own special way whenever it looks like you're about to slow down or stall awkwardly. Eventually you and Chris reach the end of your tale and he takes a minute to think, pursing his lips slightly and tilting his head sideways before what you can only assume to be the forthcoming admonishment.

"Considering the factors outside of our control, I think that went almost as well as it could have."

ACTIVATE MASTER PROTOCOLS, CALL THE POLICE AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. GET ME ALEXANDRIA.

He notices the shocked look both you and Chris are throwing his way, before an almost imperceptible smile plays across his Dredd-like features.
"Obviously you need hand to hand combat instruction, but apart from that you dealt with the unpowered criminals well. Charging Bakuda was perhaps not the best Idea, considering it led to a major injury on my part. But she was unstable, and required immediate pacification. You noticed your teammate was in a stalemate and rushed in to tip the balance. Losing her was certainly suboptimal, but you two still made the right call. One I'm... personally thankful for. Oni Lee is a sociopathic murderer, so there's no doubt he would have made good on his threat."
He shuffles in his seat, stroking his goatee as he thinks over his next words. You get the feeling he's somewhat conflicted.

"Then we come to your... surgery. Firstly, I would like to state that the entire ordeal was thoroughly uncomfortable. You may not know this, but during your surgery, I was actually awake. I was paralysed due to a fragment of shrapnel that had punctured my spinal column."

The ramifications of that hit you like a sack of bricks, and it takes Armsmaster raising both his hand and voice to quiet your sputtering apology.
"While... extremely painful. Your intervention may well have saved my life. My suit's internal sensors gave me twenty to thirty minutes to live, and it was almost twenty three minutes before Panacea could begin healing me. I personally believe what you did was the most efficient action you could have in the situation. And given a similar situation where there was no immediate access to trained professionals, I would be more than willing for you to engage in similar medical activities. Given of course, that you were supervised by someone else."
He then turns to Chris, who's looking thoroughly mortified by this whole conversation.
"Excuse me Kid Win, do you mind giving me and Card Shark a moment?"

He nods somewhat jerkily before heading back into the workshop.

I think some upgrades to his armour plates would be better, it would be easy. All we would have to do is produce the panels and he could apply them. I feel he would prefer this over a time consuming pet.
Perhaps we could make him some tinker tech drugs, he makes his own but since chemicals are our speciality we could probably do better.

Giving his armor stronger plating sounds like a good "I'm sorry I forgot the pain killers" present. Healing drugs would be good too. He could reserve a small space in his suit to pump the drugs into his system once he takes sufficent damage. Do you think we should get tested after trying the combat drug we made?

>The plates of alloy the fabricator creates are covered in a thin layer (Almost imperceptible) of goop that forces chemical bonds to do fucky shit. That's how it can turn anything into a metal, despite being fed with anything from wood to meat. You can extract this liquid if you make something that'll hold it. Essentially having disintegrator goop. That's why it's listed as a chemical mix on the pastebin.
So once we can remove the disintegrator goop and hold it in a container, that's goop-free alloy right there for Armsmaster to make shit with.

Let's be completely honest, people want kid win for the same reason that most anons want a new waifu, because he showed interest. When a character shows interest they all of a sudden become the flavor of the week and people want them. I promise half the anons that want this will jump ship the moment there's another character whose "ooh yeah, want me that mc ass" because, and don't even try to deny this, shipping/waifuing/husbandoing/collective rpg relationships are shallow. Anons end up wanting a given character because
A) you think they're cute
B) you think the pic they're based on is cute
C) you find your ship with them cute
D) they want mc and in extention want you and anons are massive feel sluts
E) they were first
F) they initiated and anons can't say no
>>
>>3281339
Man I just want to be Tinker bros with Kid Win only. I have no desire for any romance in the story, even though this is a Wildbow story where suffering causes people to get together more often than not, which causes them to suffer more because of their individual problems and issues

Or Panacea could be so fundamentally altered by constant exposure to Glory Hole's full blast awe aura throughout her formative years, so inherently fucked by her adoptive mother pressuring her and being an indirect bitch to her for simply being Marquis' daughter and maybe also daughter of Iron Rain (depending on if you subscribe to that theory), making her directly related to E88 as Kaiser's niece while her adoptive father has literal crippling depression and cannot even look after her, so traumatized by the sheer possibilities and control her OP as fuck power gives her, along with the massive guilt and constant distress (both self-inflicted and outside influenced) she feels whenever she isn't using her power to help someone at any given moment - that Panacea is crumbling and already almost too far broken and gone for Barnaby's Crazy Diamond to 'fix.'

Also some WoG from Wildbow himself on this:
>"Speaking of Panacea, what exactly was her trigger event? Glory Girl's was getting fouled in a sports game but what about Amy?"
>A gang attacked a mall, hurting Glory Girl. Basically told in the worm drafts, only it wasn't the S9. (Panacea's trigger event)
>"And lastly, at the start of canon, Panacea's still somewhat well adjusted as a person and as a healer, despite her family life and history?"
>"She only really started to crumble as a person AFTER TattleTale's verbal attack in the Bank Job, correct?"
>No, she was steadily crumbling beforehand. Gallant was harboring concerns prior, it was post-bank job when he felt compelled to broach the awkward subject and act on those concerns. It was the starting point for the steep decline, though, and the city going to hell, Leviathan attacking and hurting Flashbang / killing Shielder & Manpower, they were all factors in things starting to go steeply downhill. For Panacea, it's easier to blame Tattletale for setting it in motion, especially when Tattletale's voice and taunts are what she thought about over & over again while dwelling on the subject, but that doesn't mean it's really what set it in motion.

Panacea is damaged. D A M A G E D

>A man at the side of the room stood straighter. Marquis. His hair was long enough to drape over his shoulders, his face clean-shaven by contrast. He had a fancy-looking jacket folded over one arm, and a white dress shirt that had fine lines of black lace at the collar and the sleeves he'd rolled up his arms. Two ostentatious rings dangled from a fine chain around his neck; the chain had a locket on it, suggesting he'd added the rings as an afterthought. To keep them out of the way while he worked, perhaps.
>"What is it, Amelia?"
>For another man, the combination of physical traits and the style of dress might have led to someone mistaking them for a woman. They might have come across as effeminate.
>Marquis didn't. Not really. When he'd spoken, his voice had been masculine, deep, confident. The cut of his shoulders and chin, his narrow hips, was enough that I couldn't expect anyone to mistake him for a woman. I wasn't the type to go for older guys, I wasn't even the type to go for effeminate guys. But I could see where women would go for Marquis.

>Victoria triggered, at 14, when she was fouled in a basketball game. When she jumped to make a shot, another player slammed into her mid-air bruising her sternum, and she began flying.
>Unsportsmanlike conduct between players. She jumped to make a shot, someone else slammed into her in mid-air, and she didn’t fall to the ground until she stopped flying.
> Wildbow: Glory Girl wanted to be a hero more than anything, she couldn't, she was frustrated, joined a sports team where she could give her all and actually shine, and connected with another hero in a romantic sense, out of that deep-seated need.
>Wildbow: Which isn't to say she didn't care about him, mind you.

>"It's well known that second Triggers involve polling any other Shards within range and such, but does this also happen with first Triggers? Could Gallant have already been a cape and nearby when she Triggered?"
>"Of course, she could have also second Triggered with him nearby at some point. Incidentally, as a second gen, I'd surmise that her second Trigger would be psychologically comparable to a first gen's first Trigger."
>You're thinking along the right lines, re: the source of her aura.
>>
>>3282666
From Ward, Blinding 11.8
>This wasn’t as simple as a hard shove in the direction of a second trigger. I was pretty sure I didn’t qualify. Second generation capes triggered ‘easier’, but there had never been a second generation cape who’d second triggered. Whatever resources the power devoted to passing itself on seemed to rule it out, and I doubted the universe would be so kind as to let me be the first. It would be too easy.
>Multi-triggers were in the same boat.

Off some >>>/reddit/ thing
>"that's definitely not enough information to base this "third gens are stronger than everyone!" theory off of. Literally all we know is that a toddler triggered and a family died. was outed. Third gens definitely don't trigger easily, seeing as it took a lot for Theo and Aster never did. Even second-gens don't trigger "easily."
>"Bonesaw, Skitter, and Glaistig Ulaine are first gens; they're incredibly powerful."
>"Allfather is a first gen; he's pretty powerful. Kaiser is a second gen; he's a lot stronger than his father. Golem is a third gen; he's so much weaker than his father, it's not even funny."
>"Also, all of those powerful second and first gens like Panacea and Bonesaw and Glaistig Ulaine? They all triggered pretty young, so that also could have been a contributor in how powerful they were."
>Wildbow: ^ Third gens being strong is fanon, really.

Another Wildbow WoG:
>Generally the trigger cause fits in the same general category. Brian had his second trigger for much the same reason he had his first. They can differ in nature. What's happening is that the entity is drawing from context and exploring/conceptualizing new uses for the powers (which are still in the metaphorical computer's memory, but not in the hardware that burned out in the trigger process). The entity begins splitting off, ready to find a generally young & similar host to target (piggybacking off the parent's context & experience for an easier triggering process/analysis) but then a major event prompts it to catalyze and consolidate in the current host instead.
>If it's in an adult before finding its way to the child, it can begin this splitting-off process (generally requiring time or a degree of stress to allow for the maturation).
>They are exceedingly rare (two noted in-story. Taylor didn't second-trigger in the last arc, to be clear), and generally speaking they do more harm than good. If it's a straight power-up, you're probably doing it wrong

Jessica Yamada is the Mary Sue meme therapist who can talk to anyone about their problems and get a 100% success rate. Sure she's a nice character but UGH. Despite all that shit, having people openly talk about their trigger events, why they're so fucked up, and why their powers serve to not help them at all - this is a damn good idea I'm backing completely. In fact, I'm questioning why this sort of mental health assistance isn't told to be prevalent in regards to parahumans in-universe, at least not until Jessica Yamada is conveniently introduced as the magic cure-all for muh feelings n sheeit.

Amy is Panacea, a hero with complete biological master working as a healer. pan pan (panacea) Amy Claire Dallon best healer ever
She feels a strong attraction to Victoria, possibly as a result of constant exposure to her sister's awe-inducing aura at a formative stage

Victoria Dallon (glory girl) has a so called shaker(its a master) power that makes people like/fear her
>>
>>3283883
Does Barnaby or anyone know this?

>>3283858
Amy is Panacea. Basically, Glory Girl has an aura which makes people in complete awe of her. Amy is Glory Girl's adopted sister, and was exposed to the aura for an extended period of time. I'm not sure where we are in the timeline, but Amy doe some bad things because of it and gets fucked up, or is fucked up by it and does bad things. I really enjoyed Worm but I found it to be a utter slog to read through after Taylor joined the PRT. Basically started skimming up until the final chapters and even they seemed kinda meh compared the start. I did enjoy Wildbow's other web-serial Pact though much of it also felt like a slog.

Yeah everybody feels the same way about Taylor and events post time-skip. Ward is good to read if you want more cape action, but it's also a lot harder to read in some aspects than Worm was. Some guy off one of the Wendigo quest threads put it best:
>Victoria is an awful MC, the main cast is terrible and all their interactions with each other is like reading a manual in how to behave in a trigger-free zone in a SocJus world where micro-aggressions are tantamount to murder.
and yeah, lots of suffering too.
>I did enjoy Wildbow's other web-serial Pact though much of it also felt like a slog.
Apparently the meme criticism with Pact is that it's pacing is TOO fast. It's relentless and doesn't stop and there is no downtime at all that lasts for longer than one or two chapters at most. That's literally what everyone supposedly complains about it, but then again >>>/reddit/
Fuck them. Blake motherfucking Thorburn is unironically the best Wildbow protagonist and Pact is the best story Wildbow has ever written, and I refuse to back down on this.
