Ah, news!

So the folks may have me down there next(?) week to help out with some pretty major yard work, not sure if I mentioned that before or not. Not a big deal, but a multiple day one, so there won't be any runs while that's going on. I'm hoping they'll call me to go down there Monday next week, but we'll see. I'll keep you guys up to speed there, so you'll know as soon as I do- just check the twitter, here https://twitter.com/Warhound89

Other than that, no news worth mentioning- no job offers yet, sadly. ah well.

======================================================

Someone, you reflect rather grimly, set your cell phone alarm to a general quarters klaxon. You have your suspicions on whom, though you can’t imagine when they’d have had a chance to do it.

Normally you’re up before your alarm, of course, a habit you grew into in high school, but the late night last night meant you actually slept in a little- you had to curtail your morning run too, and you still haven’t managed to catch breakfast. You’ve had worse before, but it still annoys you with yourself, unusual circumstances or no.

One of the ever-present base vehicles- this time, a humvee from the local marine pool, still painted in desert tan, waits for you. It’s just as well, it’s a fairly nice day, even if it is a bit warm. Your driver, perhaps predictably, is a marine provost marshal officer- armed, of course. He salutes and then nods towards you. “Morning, sir.” He says. “I’m Sargent Williams, and I’m your driver for the day. You’re supposed to go to the admin building, but I’ve also been told you need to get by the flight line and the med center before afternoon chow.”

You nod.

“Don’t matter to me which order we do it in, sir, but we’d better get going if you want to make it to the chow hall this afternoon.”

[] Let’s get by admin first, so i can take care of the last of the paperwork there.
[] It was probably Merlin that wanted to see you on the flight line, I’ll do that first.
[] Let’s get by the docs first, so we can get that done before anything else.

[x] Let’s get by the docs first, so we can get that done before anything else.

“Medical first.” You say, getting a nod in return.

“No problem, sir.” the marine says, climbing in on the driver’s side. “So, wyvern driver, huh?” He asks as he backs the humvee out and pulls into traffic. the drive across the post isn’t too long- there’s a medical building here, though in your case anything serious would get you airlifted to the university hospital where most of the local navy healwitches pracitce.

You start to respond, but he continues. “My old man flew hornets in the war, mostly in southeast Asia. Flew out of Da Nang and Clark airbase.”

You nod politely. “Never understood it myself.” He says with a grin. “Ain’t shit to hide behind up there, you’re exposed as all hell to anyone that looks. And don’t get me started on dealing with witches.”

[] What about them? Witches aren’t so bad to handle.
[] We’re on more even footing than you guys are if you run into a tank witch, though.

[x] We’re on more even footing than you guys are if you run into a tank witch, though.

“We’re on more even footing than you guys are if you run into a tank witch, though.” You point out. You don’t bother mentioning witches like your mother- no one really counts special operations when they talk about challenge an opponent would present.

He laughs. “You might be, sure, but everyone that’s not in a Wyvern?” He shakes his head. “Hell, we run into a tankwitch, you can put twenty five mike mike sabot through a shield, if you hit it enough, and then we’ve got SMAW and AT-4s that’ll do the job too. Plus most ‘toons have access to Javelins and the Pike is at the squad level. Not to mention shit like battalion fires or whatever. But you pilots, shit. Even if you do call for help one of them can wreck a fuckin squadron in about fifteen seconds, and what have you got to stop her?”

Part of you disagrees- you own father’s wartime record, for example, being proof enough that witches aren’t invincible- but then again, he’s a pretty poor example.

“”I mean, hell. Look at top gun. The guys that go in there are the top one percent, and if they manage a one in four kill to loss against the witches there, they consider that amazing. Even the wyverns we see come through- the fleet ones, not the new guys like you, sir, even they do like one to one at best.” He shakes his head again, “No sir, you can keep that shit. At least I can hide behind a rock or something if I gotta.”

Hes not wrong, though I would point out that if he specifically comes up against a tank witch hes screwed. Sure his platoon might have something to deal with her but thats the same with a squadron - we are the equivalent of the guy with the Javelin.

[x] Nah, you can outfight a witch if you know what you’re doing. We’ve got a lot of advantages.

You shake your head as you pull up to a stoplight. Your marine driver looks over at the girls inside, who don’t even spare a glance in your direction. “You can outfight a witch if you know what you’re doing. We’ve got a lot of advantages.”

He snorts. “YOU might, sir, owing to your folks and all, but most pilots don’t. How’s a bug or a cat supposed to fight a witch?

“Well, tomcats have a lot more thrust and a radar that can detect witches beyond visual range. They don’t climb as well, but they also have a second set of eyes, and witches can’t take too many missiles on the shield.”

“But they can shoot ‘em down.” He points out. “Harder to pop a 155 barrage outta the air.”

You nod. “Fair enough, but that’s why you salvo launches.”

He shrugs. “In all fairness sir, maybe you don’t get it. You will though, the girls they put you guys against are the best in the fleet. I’ve met them in town, they try to make a game of it.” He laughs hollowly as you pull into the medical center lot. “They’re already talking shit on who’s gonna be the one to break you.”

You sigh. “Of course they are. Well, at least I know what’s coming now, right?”

He frowns. “I’d have expected you to be chomping at the bit to prove ‘em wrong about you, sir.”

It’s your turn to laugh. “I grew up with twelve half-sisters. All of them are witches. I’m used to this kinda thing.”

He pauses. “Yeah, I guess not. I’ll be out here or in the lobby sir.” He says as you head into the building.

The desk is staffed by a pair of navy staffers, one of whom looks up at you. “How can I help you, Lieutenant?” She says, reading the rank pins on your collar.

“Follow up with the doc for my plugs.” You say, getting a raised eyebrow and a check of the computer.

“Lieutenant Laroux-Bishop?” She asks, getting a nod out of you.

“That’s me.”

She types a few things into her computer, then looks back up at you. “the doctor is back along that corridor to the left. You know where his office is?”

“Yeah.”

“Go ahead and head back, sir. He’s in there, and I’ve let him know you’re on the way.”

You turn and walk back, ignoring the voices behind you- you can practically feel both of them staring as you head into the doctor’s office. He’s sitting behind a desk, rubbing his temples and sipping from a stained white ceramic mug of coffee- you can smell it across the room. He looks up at your knock. “Lieutenant. come in, sit down, dog the hatch.” You nod- he’s in uniform and ranks you by a fairly significant margin.

“Sorry, it was a long night. How are you feeling?”

“Good, sir.” You respond honestly. “Minor numbness in my digits, tips of the toes, that sort of thing, legs still feel strange, but it’s getting better.”

“Good. Plugs giving you any trouble?”

You shake your head. “No sir. I’ve been forgetting they’re there half the time.”

“Excellent. Follow me over to the exam room real fast, we’re gonna take a look and then you’re good to go.” He says, standing up, taking his mug of coffee with him.

You follow him across the hall to the exam room, sitting on the edge of the bench in there.

“Alright, lemme take a look. This is all basic shit, in case you were wondering. just looking for any redness around the covers or swelling, anything like that.”

“Procedure?” You ask, aware that the implant surgery wasn’t the easiest.

“No, just you.” he says from behind you, turning on a flashlight. “But yours look fine. Alright, I’m going to give you the full sign off, at least for now. Let me know if that numbness doesn’t go away, it should be gone entirely in a week or so. Come see me if it doesn’t, but you don’t need to see me otherwise.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Ok, that’s it.”

You stand up, walking out of the open door and back to the lobby, just in time to see your driver stooping to get a can of mountain dew out of the vending machine. He turns and blinks. “Damn, sir, that was fast. Everything good?”

You nod.

“Alright, well, where to next?” He says, looking at his watch. “It’s about oh seven if you haven’t seen a clock yet.”

“Admin.” You say.

“Wouldn’t want to get a late grade on your homework, eh?” the marine laughs. “Let’s go.”

He puts his drink on the wide center console of the humvee as you both step in. “Man, I hate these things.” He grouses, hitting the ignition. “Spent half my first enlistment in the sandbox, riding guns on these damn things. Thought getting stateside would mean a patrol car.” He laughs. “Guess I was wrong, huh.”

He’s quiet the rest of the way to the administration building, though you get there fairly quickly. “Alright, sir, I’ll wait here.” He says as you park.

You nod, taking the steps up to the entryway and heading through, pausing at the duty desk only to get checked. “Headed up to see the admiral, huh? well, he’s got a visitor, so be sure to knock.” The Marine on duty says, handing back your ID.

[x] “Will do, thanks.”

You nod. “Will do, thanks.” You say, before heading past the desk and up the stairs.

The building, built new and just opened last year, overlooks the flight line across the road. Of course, all the windows in the building are in offices for the various staff officers here, and you can’t see them as you walk through the halls, though the reverberating roar of the morning flights still echos through the building. Otherwise it’s quiet inside, even the air conditioners too new to make too much noise.

The Admiral’s office is, perhaps predictably, one of the nicest. His adjutant’s desk sits empty, though there’s a box for incoming paperwork that lets you drop your filled out paperwork and selection list. You’re turning around when the man returns. “Oh, Lieutenant.” he says. “Sorry sir, I was running to get coffee, the pot in the office is broken.” He spares a forlorn glance over at the simple black coffee machine on a file cabinet along one wall.

“Anyway, sorry sir. The Admiral wanted to see you as soon as you came by.” Go ahead on in, I’ll let him know you’re here.”

He picks up the phone on his desk and punches a button, looking up at you for a second. “Sir? Yessir, the LT is here. Yes sir, I’ll send him in.” He says, nodding at you. “Go on in, sir.”

The door is closed, and you knock before opening it. “Lieutenant.” The Admiral says. “I’d hoped to be able to catch you before you got back to the flight line.”

You recognize the ears- and tail- before his guest even turns around. “An I be callin in a favor ta be speakin with ya befoah ya be flyin around.” Your mother says, standing up from the chair she had occupied and walking over to embrace you. “Mah boy. Admiral, do ya be mindin if I be borrowin him for a bit?”

You can see the old man’s smirk. “I only had him come in because you asked.” He says.

“I be thankin ya, admiral. You be takin care, now, and mebby I be back by. Morgan, walk with your maman.”

You follow her out of the door, dismissed by the admiral even before you had a chance to speak. “Morgan. How ya be, my boy? Dey be sayin ya givin dem a scare earlier.”

[x] They haven’t told me what happened exactly, yet.

“They haven’t told me what happened exactly, maman.” You say, stopping as she sweeps out of the building to put on your cover. Your driver, still in the humvee, looks up and frowns.

“He be with me.” Your mother says, walking over. “If ya need to be checkin in wid dat, we go in with ya.”

The marine shakes his head and grins. “Nah, I’d recognize the mother of night anywhere. You fished my old man out of the drink, during the war.”

Maman smiles. “I thought ya be lookin familiar. How’s your daddy doing?”

“Arthritis slows him down some, but he’s still going.” Sergeant Williams responds.

“You be tellin him I said hello, den. I’ll have dem give ya a call when I be done chattin wid my boy.”

He nods, turning back on the truck to enjoy his sudden free time. “So dey do no be tellin ya what happen?”

You shake your head. “I haven’t asked.”

“Mmm. Morgan, ya need ta be askin bout dis kinda ting. Don’t be puttin it past dem to be tryin ta play with ya cos of who your daddy is.”

You blink. “There’s no way the navy would let them-” You’re cut off by her laugh.

“Morgan, what I be tellin ya? It don’t be fair, no, but ya don’t just be yaself to dese people. Ta de navy you maybe another one of your daddy, and dey be willin to do a lot ta get dat back. Ta de matrons dat work with de navy, ya maybe a way to gettin at me, an mabey gettin de granbabby de be wantin, among udda tings. Ya never be forgettin dat.”

You sigh, but nod. “Oui, Maman.”

“Don’t be like dat, you knew dis be the way it is when ya took de comission. Me and yer papa, we both tell ya this. De navy be de easiest of de two to deal with, an dey prolly not push ya too much. Now, tell me, ya seen your papa yet?”

“No.” You shake your head. “We didn’t talk a whole lot, Cass and Anastasia ate with us.”

“You be watchin dat Cass like a hawk, boy of mine. She be actin strange where ya be concerned.” She says, shaking her head. “Her momma needs ta be addressin dat, but it not be my place ta be saying it. But we’re not talkin bout her, boy. [x] Because you’re worried I won’t know when it’s killing me.

“Because you’re worried I won’t know when it’s killing me.” You say.

“You say dat like you goan know bettah.” She responds. “Didja evah talk to ya papa about dat? About if he knew? You think it be someting we be worried about for no good reason, but you listen boy, your daddy only heah cos de white witch take a hell of a risk, an offer to trade hersel fo him. Dat not be someting ya can ask fo, or even count on.”

You nod, having heard the story- second and thirdhand, mostly, but completely enough that you can piece it together.

“Now, don’t no one know what ya be havin. Maybe ya not really inherit dat. No way of tellin, not like dere is with ya sistas. But know jus like I do dat all of dem that your papa fathered, all of dem be very strong wid de gift. It be standin ta reason you be de same way.” She stops, and you note your path has led you to the entry control point to the flight line, near where your wyvern, distinguishable both by it’s lack of any identifying marks other than the navy insignia and the fact that it’s the only one on the pad, sits.

She sighs. “Morgan, I be knowin since the day ya were born ya be goin dis way in life. Ya always wanted to win at whateva ya were doing, and every time I went to watch a game I be scared one day we’d fin out de worst way dat you be like your papa. Ya smart and skilled, and I be knowin ya know where ya limits are an I be knowin ya always be tryin ta push dem.”

She pauses- while you’ve no doubt she could get onto the flight line just fine, despite her technical status as a civilian, she, unlike perhaps everyone else in your life, has no love of aircraft. “I be havin business in town. But I want ya ta promise me ya be being careful. Take it easy when ya be just testin an trainin, no matta what dey tell ya.”

She pauses. “Especially when dey be tryin ta tell ya to push hard. Ya understand me, boy?”

Inevitable waifu wars aside I think the one thing we can all agree on is that no child of ours is going to dance to matron politics.

Any ideas what the new witches will look like? I always thought of Wendy as pic related, since witches in this canon seem to subtract ~10 years off of their actual age in terms of appearance. Kyou is a japanese princess, so that narrows it down somewhat. Young is almost certainly a redhead like Minna. Kelsey probably looks like her mom. Lotus and Danielle are a tossup.
>>
[x] You want me to sandbag?

“You want me to sandbag?” You ask, almost, but not quite, surprised. Maman has always been protective like this- cautioning you to take it easy, to not play too hard. She did it with almost anything you did- save for video games, where she didn’t seem to mind. You know why, of course- hard not to, everything considered- but you’ve always been confused that she’s never seemed to understand that you can’t give less than your all at anything you set out to do.

She sighs again. “I be afraid ya be taking it like dat. I just wan ya to be careful.” She says. “Don’t ya ever forget, Morgan, ya be my baby boy. I don’t be askin ya to do nothing I tink be hurting ya, an I’ve always tried ta make it clear dat ya gotta make ya own self happy and do no be listenin to no one who tinks ya the second go round of your papa. You do what makes you happy, boy, and dat just be de way it need to be.”

“But you want me to sandbag.” You persist. “When it’d be better to find out here and now if I am like my dad-“

“Don’t be forgettin he go through top gun befoah de war hisself.” She says. “And it don’t be appearing heah, only later, up in Alaska.”

“But-”

She shakes her head. “You listen to your maman, Morgan. You be doin what be right by you, but don’t you be takin no risks dat ya don’t need ta be taking. If- IF-” she says, holding up a finger as you open your mouth to respond. “If ya really do be inheriting ya papa’s talent, you in a bettah place to understand it an use it den he eva was. But you be knowin enough ta know dat dese tings don’t always do what we be tinkin dey should be doin, an maybe you be stronga than he was and it snuff you right out.”

She pauses for a second. “I don’t tink I can stand dat thought.” She says, looking away. “You be careful, boy. Now I gotta go. You go see ya aunt Merlin an talk planes wid her, an give ya maman a hug.”

You do- and a quick kiss on the cheek for good measure- and she’s gone, walking back across the street with that distinctive saunter of hers- half predator, half runway model.

Before the reboot, someone suggested that Morgan should be with a normal girl just to mess with the matrons.

You shake your head to clear it, turning to show your ID at the entry point and head onto the flight line. You can’t really go onto the apron- flight operations for the top gun class are going on, with the morning flights still taking off for their air combat training out over the desert in Nevada or the ocean. Of course, the pad with your Wyvern on it is occupied only by your fighter and the support vehicles, so walking there is less of an issue.

The ground crew has switched out since last night, though you can still see Aunt Merlin, up in the front seat of the cockpit. A couple of the ground crew look at you as you approach, but Merlin sees you too, and calls down to them, raising her arms above her head and stretching as she does so.

I'm a fan of the idea, though pissing off the matrons should only be the icing on the cake. I figure we'd be sick of witches, having been constantly steeped in them our whole life, perpetually hounded by them for one reason or another. A normal girl would be a breath of breath air.

For Kyou, the TLed info off Danbooru for the Jap witch I posted last thread seemed similar with Ghost's general description, so I want to say that's her...
You know, I just remembered the last Princess we hosted came with a bodyguard witch. Might get one in the squadron too if we select Kyou.

Lotus will have goggles. Prove me wrong.

Danielle, I'm thinking one of those cold looking types. But then again, that might just be generalizing based on her ability...
>>
[x] Have her come down here- she’s probably been at it all night.

You signal her to come down, knowing that she’s probably been at it all night. While you appreciate it- and are sure that when you do get into the fighter to take it up for the first time, it’ll tick over like a perfectly tuned watch, you also know your aunt has a way of getting caught up in things.

She nods, yawning, and climbs out of the cockpit. You make your way over to the access ladder- the stairs have disappeared to somewhere, but the built in ladder has been unlocked and lowered down. She’s an expert at it, but she’s also getting older- and she’s been up all night, most likley, so you stand at the bottom, making sure she gets down safely.

She climbs down without a hitch, yawning again when she hits the pavement. You note she’s in a witch uniform- pantsless and shoeless. She shakes her head when you quirk an eyebrow- she doesn’t often do that.

“Checking the witch interface before you showed up.” She says. “I’ll probably-” She yawns again. “Have to reset it for your SIO, when she gets here, but for now it should be alright.”

“It’s set for you?” You ask, looking up. She shakes her head with a laugh.

“Oh no, no. My settings would hurt another witch, most likely. it’s set for the most gentile draw possible for a wyvern. It’ll handle everything your familiarization and crew flights will need you to do, without... ah. Scaring anyone.”

[x] Scaring them?

“Scaring them?” You ask, nodding and falling into step as she indicates you should walk with her.

She nods. “Yes. Hang on a second, and I’ll explain. just going to tell the crew we’re good to complete the checklists and get the chief to sign off on flight when he gets back.”

You don’t have to wait long- the ranking member of the crew nods while she explains what’s going on, and even, perhaps out of respect, refrains from staring at her backside too long as she turns away. “Ok, let’s walk. Monsters only go so far.” She says, tiredly.

“Scaring them?” You repeat, and she nods again.

“You know what my power is, right?”

“Sure. Goddess in the machine. You can talk to machines and push them so far past design spec it’s beyond comprehension.”

She nods. “Right. I can also feed them magic faster and more... bluntly, for lack of a better word, than most witches can handle. If they try, they can get hurt. You remember Patty Mitchell?”

“Yeah, one of the squadron from the war, right? lives in Germany with her wife, one of the Youngs.”

“That’s her. She ever tell you what happened when she tried to power our wartime wyvern?”

You shake your head- you can’t remember it, at least.

“It almost drained her completely. It disengaged itself when the flow in fell below threshold, but if it hadn’t, she could have been silenced.” She says. “My mistake, and no one got injured, but she got spooked. So did I. Never made that mistake again, and the interface on our factory wyvern won’t even work with another witch, it won’t pattern-match correctly. The interfaces on your jet are set to the lowest, easiest draw that they can be to run the wyvern’s systems. It’s almost as gentle as initial flight training strikers, since really they just need the energy for the AI, avionics, and the war emergency power foci. All the other stuff we can either bring up later or when you get to the fleet.”

She yawns again.

[x] Ya know, aunt merlin, maybe you shouldn’t be driving like that. Why don’t we just call my minder and give you a ride home?

“You know, Aunt M, maybe you shouldn’t be driving like that.” You say, concerned. While your aunt is an adult- with two kids of her own, no less- she can and does still make more than a few questionable calls about her own health and safety. Working all night on the wyvern and then trying to drive, even the short distance to the Chance-Vought house, is exactly the kind of thing she wouldn’t think twice about. It’s also a real good way of getting hurt or killed in a stupid accident. “Why don’t we just call my driver and he and I can give you a lift back to your quarters?”

She nods. “Ok, Morgan. We can do that instead. It’s probably-” She yawns again. “safer anyway. Let me get my things out of the company car, it can stay here at least till tomorrow morning.”

You pull out your cell phone as she walks over to the car, unlocking it with a keyfob she had in a shirt pocket- you’re surprised she didn’t leave them in her pants. Looking up, you hang up almost as soon as you dial the contact point for your driver- he’s already in the lot, just a few cars down. He grins when you walk over.

“Your ma caught me as I was about to head out, said I should wait for you over here.” He says as an explanation. No big, I was about to go catch afternoon chow anyway.”

[] Before we do that, let’s get Merlin dropped off- she’s miserable at hiding how tired she is.

[x] Yeah, let’s go do that, we can bring Aunt M along- she probably hasn’t had much beyond some candy bars anyway.

You look at your watch in surprise- it’s not that late, is it? You can’t figure out where the time went, but it is what it is, you figure. Still, you nod, taking your aunt’s bag- a simple backpack, and setting it in the back of the humvee. “We’re about to go grab lunch. You want to come with?” You ask, getting a nod.

“I’m getting pretty hungry, yes.” She says.

“Let me guess.” You supply, dryly as she sits in the seat behind you. “You’ve been having snickers and twix all night and haven’t had actual real food since dinner last night.”

She shrugs. “It’s never been a problem before. Besides, you know enough to know we need all the sugar.”

“You need to eat actual food.” You respond. “Not just sugar, caffeine and empty calories.”

“I mean, I was just gonna go to subway anyway, sir.” sgt. Williams says. “Not sure if you can call them real food.”

“They’re close enough.” You say. “Drive on.”

He laughs, starting up the truck and heading out onto the road.

“Your fighter’s good to go, except for the modules.” Merlin says, from the back seat. “We’ll install those when you do final selection, probably. Week or two.” She yawns. “You’ll probably be starting flight tomorrow, day after at the latest.”

“That quick?” You ask, looking into the rearview to see her. She nods.

“Probably. program specifies that they work with you when they can, but you’ll fly with the first witch they can get back here to start cycling up first.” She pauses. “Don’t feel like you have to introduce me to every single one, but I do want to meet your official teammate when it’s all over.”

[x] What, you think I’m not going to get your opinion on them, too?

“You think I won’t want your opinion on each of them?” you ask, looking back at her again.

She shakes her head. “It’s not that.” She says. “I know you do, Morgan. But you only get a few weeks to get a crew selection and do all your fleet checks, and I’ll be just as busy as you will be. Unless you’re planning to move into the company house we won’t have time, and I’m pretty sure the board would frown on that just because it would let lockmart or Boeing to start talking about blatant navy favoritism if word got out.”

“And it would.” you say, flatly.

She nods. “Most likely. I’m sure the legal department could get it dismissed in no time at all, there’s a long personal history we can prove, but still-”

“And there’s always coven politics.” You say.

“That doesn’t bother me that much.” She responds, looking down to rummage in her bag. “They mostly leave me alone, and since I’m with more with Vought than a coven, they don’t want to run the risk of making the company mad. If it came to coven politics, the corporations would close ranks anyway- McDonnell and Boeing would side with us, General Dynamics and Textron probably would too. Lockmart might not, but if they’re the odd man out it’d only hurt them in the end.” She comes back up with another can of monster visible.

Just before she can open it, though, you pull into the naval exchange parking lot. “I thought you said subway?” You ask, getting out of the humvee, noting that your aunt is still bareleg as she climbs out, though she’s put on a pair of duty slippers- tough, tan slip on shoes with steel toes that most witches opt for when they’re on duty.

The marine shrugs. “There’s one in the food court, and that’s usually what I get.” he says. “There’s some other places in there, panda express, BK, that sort of shit. You ok with eating here sir?”

[x] Let’s grab it and roll- my aunt’s gonna drink another can of crack if we don’t.

You shake your head. “No. If we don’t grab it and roll she’s gonna go for another can of crack.”

The marine laughs. “Knew a gunner that lived on that shit, no idea how he did it. but no problem sir, the lines ought to be short still, we’re a little before afternoon chow.”

The three of you enter the food court, and it’s largely quiet- there’s some groups of sailors and marines eating at the tables, and a pair of witches in line at the panda express, but it’s still pretty sparse. You do see a couple eyes flick over to Merlin, but- given there’s already two bareleg witches already here- they don’t linger.

Both of the witches, however, do turn and look, doing a double take when they recognize her. While neither surrenders their place in line, their heads get a little closer together- you can practically hear the whispering.

You elect against eating there, instead joining Sgt. Williams at the subway. He shrugs. “We’re all pretty used to witches around here, sir.” He says, after ordering. “So it’s not a big deal for a girl to be bareleg around here the way it is at some other posts.”

“It’s not everyday you get to see the eagle’s RIO.” Merlin says from behind you. “I’m used too that kind of thing. Most witches would recognize me anyway.”

“Why’s that, ma’am?” He asks. “I mean, I know about the eagle, most folks do, but I wouldn’t have recognized you if I hadn’t been told.”

You turn in time to see her smile. “There’s a class on his father and I at most flight witch academies.” She says. “besides, they’re probably not talking about me.”

“Yeah, I guess the LT would be pretty recognizable.” He says, paying for his sandwich.

“Reasonably” You say, noting that both witches have selected a table a bit too large for them alone- and one that’s pretty close to where the line lets out. “It’s not as bad in my case.”

1/2
>>
“Maybe not anywhere else, but they” Williams says, indicating the witches with a flick of his eyes. “Are gonna know who you are. Not too many guys here with wings and your rank anymore that aren’t program. You good to go?”

“Yeah.” you say, following him out of the building without sparing too much attention to the witches- you can feel their eyes follow you out.

“Ok, so off to the vought house next, yeah?” Williams says, pulling out of the parking lot and sucking on his drink. “Nice place, I know where it’s at. Be about ten minutes.”

The drive takes about eight minutes, pulling up to the two-story, spanish-style home on the north side of the post. Unlike it’s neighbors on the small circle, it’s got an exterior fence and a detached garage off to one side. “Flag country, here.” The marine says, pulling into the drive. “pretty sure the base commander lives in one of these houses.”

Merlin steps out of the vee and nods. “Right over there.” She says, pointing. “Morgan, will you help me with the bag? I have to go get the alarm system and call back to corporate to let them know I’m here.”

[x] Sure, no problem.

You nod. “Sure.” you say, stepping out of the vee to walk around the side and grab Merlin’s bag. She brought two, you see- her backpack and a satchel, probably containing a laptop. Grabbing that too, you follow her around the side of the house, into the door there.

Merlin’s standing in front of the beeping alarm panel, her familiar out, doing something on that ghostly computer she can summon. She explained it to you, once- it’s basically a universal interface for any kind of technology. “Just put my bags upstairs, Morgan.” She says. “I’m just going to do this and let corporate know I’m here, then take a shower and go to bed.”

You nod, heading through the short entryway into a kitchen. It takes a minute to find the stairs, but once you do you find the bedrooms quickly enough, depositing the bags in the one on the northern side of the building. It’s fairly nice inside- and it doesn’t smell like it’s been closed up that long, though they’ve probably got a housekeeper that comes in.

Merlin intercepts you at the bottom of the stairs, holding out a key. “This is a spare, in case you need to get in.” She says, handing it to you. “You’re welcome to use the house if you’re here at Miramar, but you probably shouldn’t stay here with anyone other than your witch or your family.”

You nod, taking the key.

“Corporate says it’s fine, so long as no one else needs it, but that shouldn’t be a problem. We’re only here every few weeks for a couple days, unless there’s a Wyvern to cycle up.”

“Do you count as family in this case? This is nicer than the TOQ”

She shakes her head. “Probably not. Sorry Morgan.”

[x] It was a joke, Aunt M.

“It was a joke, Aunt M.” You say with a light smile.

“O-oh. Well.” She blinks. “Uh. Anyway, thank you for the help, Morgan. I’ll call if I’m up and you’re available, maybe we can go eat together.”

You nod, giving your aunt a hug before heading out, putting the key in your wallet.

Sgt. Williams nods to you as you step out, looking apologetic. “Sorry sir, I was about to go in and get you. There’s a witch on base from your list, so they want you to head over to receiving to meet her.”

“Did they say who?” You ask, and he shakes his head. “All they told me was she was one of your priority picks, and that you’d be flying with her starting tomorrow.”

You nod again, climbing into the passenger seat of the humvee as Williams starts it.

Receiving is actually in the administration building, though it’s really just part of the personnel office. It’s also kept far too cold- must be like 60 in there, you think, as you step inside. The office is a bit dated, but there’s no real reason to keep it too nice- it handles incoming marines and sailors, both those stationed here and those that, like you, are really just passing through. The blue carpet, you muse, may have been there when your dad passed through top gun in 1989.

There’s only one person here you figure could be the witch in question. She’s of medium height, and in a bareleg service uniform, indicating her status as a strike witch. She very clearly spends a lot of time in the gym- hard muscles ripple beneath slightly tanned skin, and there doesn’t seem to be an ounce of fat on her. Her hair is done in a simple ponytail that falls across the back of her neck. An older witch, one of the matrons from yesterday, is talking with her, though the conversation pauses when she sees you. “Ah, Lieutenant Laroux.” She says, halving your last name- you don’t really mind in this case. “Glad you could get here so quickly. We weren’t interrupting anything were we? I know you’ve got quite a bit of family in the area...”

>>
[x] No, ma’am.

“No, ma’am.” you respond.

“Good!” she smiles. “Lieutenant, This is Commander Danielle Peterson. She was with VF-8 until just very recently. Commander, Lieutenant Morgan Laroux-Bishop.”

She returns your salute and then grins, crossing the room to shake your hand- her grip is strong, you note. “Glad to meetcha, el tee.” She says, her voice bright and energetic sounding. “Don’t worry, I won’t pull rank unless you ask me nicely.”

The grin widens a bit, marking that as a joke- you chuckle enough to be polite, at least. Still, the Matron clears her throat in disapproval. “Lieutenant, with the commander on base, you won’t be needing your driver anymore, she can take care of that. She’ll be quartered in the transient officer’s quarters, same as you.” she says, and you nod.

“Danielle, have they explained to you the process here?”

The witch looks back over her shoulder, then half-turns. “Yes ma’am. Couple days of flights in the wyvern, then cool my heels on standby while the rest of the selections do their flight. If I make the grade, I’ll have my last chance to back out, then I go under for plugs and get joined at the brain with the lieutenant, here.”

The matron nods. “You’re on flight status so no alcohol until after your flights are completed. You need to be at flight ops by oh-four tomorrow morning. Lieutenant, the same applies to you.” She explains. “Danielle, you’ll need to be fit for a wyvern flight suit- that’s yours to keep, regardless of what else happens.”

“So I get to keep a participation trophy.” The witch says. “Cool.” Her tone of voice indicates she doesn’t think it’s cool at all.

1/2

The matron scowls some. “It’s not a participation trophy, and if you don’t get selected here, but you’re selected again by another pilot, you’re expected to still have it.” She says, shaking her head. “The training missions will all be explained beforehand, and all will be over the Nevada test and training complex.” The matron says. “You’ll get the rest of your briefing in the morning. In the mean time, Danielle, you need to get down to the life support shop to start getting fit for your flight suit, and Lieutenant, you need to go with her, your own equipment will be here as well and the flight surgeon will need to make sure your helmet interfaces with your ports correctly.”

“Aye, ma’am.” You respond.

“That’s all. Both of you get to life support and then get some food and some rest.” She orders.

“Ma’am.” You both salute, with Danielle walking back to grab a nondescript green sea bag and effortlessly sling it over one shoulder.

“Shall we, Lieutenant?” She asks.

You nod, walking with her out of the building.

“So, what should I call you?” She asks. “I’m not big on rank, but if that’s what you wanna be called, that’s no problem. I’m not too big on rank, so you can just call me Danielle, or Peterson if you want.”

I don't want to be overly familiar with her, but I don't want to be called by our last name with all the connotations that brings along.

Also, I'm not sure how much we can trust her and the matron's performances thus far. It seems like it'd be very wise to position their top choice as a bit of an anti-matron figure to match Morgan's skepticism. They know that we know that there's a game and we know how to play it.

Well, think about it. Witches as is are a massive force multiplier before they go to surgery. Things go wrong, you lose that witch for good.

There probably are some witches who are ready to go all in, but it's a pretty big decision to make.

Oh, I thought our picks already had their plugs? Seems a bit... Strange. Might just be me being paranoid, but I'd assume a witch fully committed to 'FUCK YEAH, VDNI-ENHANCED MAGITECH PLANES' would already be plugged and ready to go provided they didn't fly with anyone else. We'd have to wait for Danielle (and possibly any of the others) to heal up after they get their VDNI, too.
At least, assuming there's no problems...

Oh look a brown witch. I wonder where Lt. Davis ended up? I need to reread 69 again, or at least the first half.

>>3266109
Useful talents aside Danielle is the obvious matron plant. Active USN witch, highly recommended despite an average record on paper. At the opposite end of the spectrum you have Wendy who is well and truly done with politics, zero risk of matron fuckery there. Young who seems to be unpopular with the establishment (and is also foreign). Lotus is a reservist so she is likely not active in witch politics (but may be later). Kyou needs no explanation, although the witches pulling her strings are back in Japan which makes it hard for the US covens to influence her directly, not to mention being a princess.

It's entirely possible that Danielle doesn't have ulterior motives and we're being suspicious for nothing. But it's not paranoia if they're really out to get you, and we know that for a fact.

>>3266162
>[] Morgan is fine.
I'd prefer if the Laroux and Bishop names don't constantly come up in conversation, it might cast a shadow over things. If she doesn't want to be formal then we don't need to be either.

However that also means that ALL of the witches get to call us Morgan because we don't want to play obvious favourites.

[x] Morgan is fine.

“Morgan is fine.” You say, setting your cover on your head.

“Baller.” She responds. “Life support is over that way, yeah?” she points.

“Yeah, that’s flight ops. Everything we’re gonna need is there.” You respond.

“Cool. Nice that it’s all right here.” She says. “I was at Halsey Field, sitting in the replacement pool. Not too bad, and you’re not there long, but shit gets boring.”

You nod, content to listen to her talk for a bit.

“You sit in depot too long, ya start gettin a few too many curves, know what I mean?” She says, laughing. Her walk kind of reminds you of your mothers- predatory. “Anyway, i know you saw my packet, but I’m a SEAD specialist. First in, usually, clearing routes for strike packages and heavier air. Flew growler strikers, mostly.”

You nod, having figured as much. “Iraq?”

She nods. “Yeah, in with the initial cruise missile laydown. I opened up route green three and six in my first three sorties, then stayed busy popping mobile threats when they’d try and get them in along the route pack. Flew some support for CSAR missions for the guys and girls that got shot down, but after the first week or so it was a pretty boring war for me. Started riding shotgun for CASEVAC and stuff, but by then most of the antiair threats were optically-guided 50s vintage bullcrap still dangerous enough to a chopper, but a joke for a fast mover.”

You nod, opening the door to ops for her and walking in behind. “Life support is this way.” You say.

“Lead on.” She says, grinning. “I should get used to you in front, huh?” You can hear the smile in her voice.

“Probably.” you respond, approaching the cage- the sailor behind it recognizes you- not too many pilots and witches scheduled for anything today.

“Commander Peterson, in through there.” He says, pointing through one set of doors. “Lieutenant? follow me.”

“See ya in a few.” Danielle says, smirking at you.

In the event, you don’t actually see her again till after evening chow- and she looks pretty thoroughly embarrassed by the time you do.

Is it really a meta decision? Morgan was outright told that politics played a massive part in this decision, and Danielle is the candidate that was at the top of the Matrons' list of options. Is it meta to have a character weigh those concerns when he's been outright told he should?

This

and 2) Yes. She’s got a good record, she’s got actual combat experience, and it’s getting to the point where a soldier reporting for duty is being construed as evil shadow matron plotting.

The Meta is less in us questioning matron involvement, that’s natural after dad’s experience. What’s starting to piss people off is that every time a fucking vote shows up, the same point gets thrown in that she’s a matron plant, despite massive evidence to the contrary. There are other obvious matron picks we should be worried about. She’s an O-5, so she’s well and truly stuck in a navy career, maybe trying to make Captain and Admiral. Consorting with Matrons won’t help that clout. She seems to care more about flying the missions than getting in our pants. What she wants is to be out of the warehouse, and soaring over the skies with the coolest, baddest bird in the sky under her.

At least let her fly with us before you scream that she’s dr. evil. Or Mini me.

the covens have enormous pull in the entire military, as the controllers of their supply of witches. If she's gunning for higher ranks, she's more likely to get cozy with the matrons, not less.

So Ghost, what's Danielle's familiar anyways? And do you still have any contact with the drawfags from last time? I think there was only one IIRC... Ogitsune's witch pool is now kind of limited in the domestic witch department, at least until we go and become a multinational squadron again.

Oh, I'm paranoid she's a plant alright but I'll still give her the benefit of the doubt right now, seemed chill enough and it's still worth a try flying with her. I'd just assume the talk she had earlier with the unnamed matron was something along the lines of being told DON'T FUCK THIS UP.

>>3266365
Admittedly making Kyou our pick - story connotations aside - would be hilarious for the simple fact of the matrons going "Wait, you're serious?" and bringing the Japanese covens in to politick more with the US ones. Can't meddle if everyone's meddling!

>Danielle was a navy pick.
Did you already forget that we skipped the normal selection? None of the witches in that book are navy picks, the reason the matrons were smiling is because we cut the navy out of the process. The navy can still veto the choices we make but they don't have any say in who we pick to fly with.

>>3266378
>The politics that exist so far are so incredibly vague that the worst of it has been nerds like you blowing up at every possible HINT of the shit actually existing, rather than anything that has actually happened. Holy goddamned fuck, take an entire medicine cabinet of chill pills.
If you've already forgotten the depths of bullshit witch/navy politics can sink to, maybe you should go back and reread SWQ69. We are Frank Bishop's only son, with the Mother of Night no less, that should tell you everything you need to know. It if doesn't you haven't been paying attention.
>>
>>3266387
> What’s starting to piss people off is that every time a fucking vote shows up, the same point gets thrown in that she’s a matron plant, despite massive evidence to the contrary.
We call her a matron plant because, wait for it, she was planted right in front of us.

Consider the selection process, in order we were introduced to Danielle, Wendy and Kyou. Why do you think Danielle was mentioned first? We asked for defensive witches and they didn't even mention Young, which shows obvious bias. Lotus wasn't mentioned either despite having about the same qualifications as Wendy. It really appears like they were trying to get us to pick one of the initial three. This would make the other two fill the 2nd and 3rd slots and let them quietly sweep the binder under the rug had we not asked for it specifically.

Wendy is on the list to give us a safe and familiar option, she also happens to be the easiest witch to disqualify. No matter how well we mesh together in a test flight both the matrons and the navy could use her age to veto her selection, which, because there are no alternates waiting in the wings would make it a two horse race. Her inclusion is likely by design, again they could just as easily have put Young or Lotus in this spot.

Kyou is on there because she is the highest profile name in the book, leaving her out would be insulting both to the japanese matrons and the imperial family. The board would never seriously consider her as a realistic pick, she works in the matrons favour because if it came down to a tie between her and Danielle the navy is obviously going to side against Kyou for a variety of reasons.

This leaves Danielle as (should the other two be disqualified) the only viable option, which was probably their initial plan. From the matron's perspective she is the perfect candidate, a USN witch with a proven if average record. Not only does that make the navy happy but it also gives the matrons maximum influence over her because she isn't foreigner and thus beholden to local covens. Note that Danielle is not necessarily in on this, but if she isn't already in some matrons pocket you can bet they will try their damn best to put her there regardless of how she feels about the matter. That means problems for her down the road and by extension, us.

Now since we already voted her in (in first place no less) no one is arguing that we shouldn't give her a chance. It just needs to be duly noted that her route has TROUBLE written all over it and not just dismissed out of hand as "hurr shadowruns".
>>
>>3266758
This is pretty similar to what I was thinking and it’s an obvious concern. I would like to say that I don’t plan on ruling anyone out just because they’re a matron plant. Motivations going into this aside, the understanding gained from the bond formed through the wyvern system should help whoever it is sympathize with our point of view. People change. Hell, Ice was... icey at the beginning of ‘89. Call me a paranoid optimist.
>>
>>3266758
Honestly, it almost feels like it could also be the exact opposite. She made the list without being remarkable (sidebar, this IS the list for the Wyvern, barely getting into the program is still in the top percentiles of the world). If she's not especially distinguished she might not have any magical pedigree that the matrons are fixing to groom her for.

If we're on flight status we're told the same thing. And pilots tend to get drunk quite often when not on flight status. If you want to start watching more closely, be my guest, but I don't think there should be alarm bells about it quite yet.
>>
>>3267547
I'm not alarmed about it, per se, she's in great physical shape (and I'm pretty sure most witches aren't physically athletic because they use magic over muscle). I just think it's interesting she'd call that out specifically, girl might be a drinker.

no, you elected to *include* the ones that asked to fly with you specifically- not remove all the navy selections. >Worth noting that Morgan has benefited from maman making sure he knew what the game was. Don't think you're walking into this blind, like Frank did.
If you don't mind the feedback I think your exposition is somewhat lacking in this regard. For instance you'll mention things like: "Your practiced eye also notes the tell-tale signs of coven politics- certain witches, the favorites, you assume, have extremely glowing personal reports". However you don't actually specify the witches this refers to, which would have been important to know.

On a similar note you said "Wendy’s the first entry- listed as being one of the witches explicitly interested in flying with you specifically." which implies that the other personal requests are similarly marked. But again you forgot to say which ones those were.

The fact of the matter is that she's an "average" candidate on paper-- when the other candidates are in the top 5%, if not top 2%, of witches in the USA and allied nations that we allow to have RIOs as exchange officers fly with American pilots.

I hope none of the girls we fly with come with that pack of issues this quest because holy goddamn, no. NO.
>>
>>3272463
Softness in that context was body type only.
I too would rather fly planes, but considering most witches are teenage girls thrust into special academies, then military service at a very young age, are valued much more than any other personnel, are encouraged to walk around without pants (why not boys shorts), are literal one in a million, and have *actual magical powers*, it's frankly shocking the ones we know are even remotely coherent.

Bundles of neurosis aren't fun, but an important part of the setting via planefag's take is how the effects of sending teenage girls into combat manifests through character development. If not carefully managed it can bog things down, but dealt with correctly it can lead to some great character development.

>I hope none of the girls we fly with come with that pack of issues this quest because holy goddamn, no. NO.

its very unfair to compare anyone with spellcaster squadron. that squadron was probably the most psychologically dysfunctional in the navy, even taking into account that its members were literal child soldiers.
>>
>>3272569
Oh yeah, I'm not saying I want a bunch of perfect goddesses without any problems at all, I just don't want to see the same notes get hit again in a different quest. I don't want a kid RIO that some creepy fuck in the thread wants to bed. I don't want another Slider, Ice, or Katya. I think Ghost can write different characters with different issues, and the quest would absolutely be better off for it.

And while it is A Thing in the setting that sending kids into combat is fucked up and leads to fucked up people, I think the point has been hammered into the ground well enough. Since we know, for a fact, that witches don't just stop being witches once they become legal or whatever other anime horseshit they try to explain it with, there is pretty much no reason why, after decades of relative peace, we wouldn't have veterans and older witches with their own brand of problems to deal with.

>>3273098
Honestly, you handled 89 about as well as could be expected. Things did start getting shaky around the time ship girls started taking up your time. I think if your only distractions this time around are work, or the search for work, you've got it made in the shade.

>>3273241
Spellcaster is basically the perfect excuse for why witches in this quest ought to be no fuckin younger than 18-20. Sure, get 'em trained when their younger, give 'em witch ROTC or some shit. Keeping them kids is a defect with the setting/the nip shit that created the original concept in the first place. Since witches don't stop being effective when they get old/become christmas cake, there's even less excuse for it, except to say that pretty much every country that sends out witch kids to fight in modern war probably needs people sent to the fucking Hague.

you have to remember, the only reason why the players see witches this young was because both SWQ and SW89 was set in a total war setting (WW2/Martian war for SWQ and Cold war/WW3 for SW89). in peacetime they probably have standards for age. in wartime? straight outta the window
>>
>>3273272
This still reinforces to me that we shouldn't get a single Merlin in the squadron unless we have fucked up so bad that we're getting kids for replacements, and that should come with consequences to Morgan and any of the survivors.

89 didn't start off with total war, 89 was explicitly "peacetime" until the Reds got antsy. But we still had child soldiers for witches as a thing.

It's a defect of the setting, and while we can't go back and change what has been written, we don't have to repeat that crap now.
>>

>89 didn't start off with total war, 89 was explicitly "peacetime" until the Reds got antsy. But we still had child soldiers for witches as a thing.

actually, IRL the cold war was not really "peacetime" for the military. the US and USSR were both in a war footing for the most part. was it sustainable? who knows. I assume its the same here in SW.

>>3273289
I'd think it's in character to know that around the same time we saw the post cold war drawdowns in military spending, the witching world saw a bunch of reforms pass, due in no small part to the various veterans disorders they saw post-war, especially in witches. One of the more major points was changing how the military dealt with witches. As of 2016, No witch on combat status is below the age of 18. There are some younger ones out on apprenticeship cruises, but they're limited to strictly to flights where contact with hostile forces isn't expected, and for the most part they're kept out of regions where hostilities could break out. If war were to be declared, they're to be removed from the ship or base and returned stateside as soon as possible. Not every nation had similar reforms, but most NATO ones applied the same broad rules. There was a later set of reforms in the early aughts that also expanded mental health care for witches and troops in witch units.
>>
>>3274284
I am even more glad we didn't touch Merlin's daughter for RIO. 13 years old. We would have had to ditch her (when) the war starts, or sit it out.

I'm also glad to see the mental health being dealt with for vets. It can always use more attention.

So the interview went... well? I guess? Spent an hour and a half in their shop, didn't have to do much paperwork, but met just about everyone in there. Hopefully that's a good sign, but they said don't expect to hear back from them for about three weeks- they've got interviews up over that whole period. Kinda funny, considering they called me back a few hours after I put in, but hey, no big deal.

This, of course, means that we're good this week for the usual three day run, so that's what this will be, barring some odd catastrophe.

Anyway, that's all the news I have!

======================================================================================

The sun isn’t quite up yet, with sunrise scheduled around 06 this morning. The briefing, such as it was, was fairly simple- you’re to follow an instructor aircraft to the NTTR, where you’ll be put through some slow paces, just to test your ability to link with the aircraft. Of course, that will be well after sunrise- there’s other startup procedures to do, including bringing the AI online. Danielle, for her part, looks... slightly uncomfortable in the tight, form-fitting witch’s flight suit, the hard panels hardly doing anything to mask the shape of her body. She’s adopted a flight jacket, which at least covers her torso, at least.

“Maaaan.” She says from her spot next to you in the blue crew van that’s probably been here since sometime in the 1950s. “Why’d they have to make this thing so... ?” She says, gesturing down. “I don’t mind being bareleg, but this thing is, like, perfectly designed to show everything off, ya know? feel like the base doesn’t need to know it’s a tit bit nipply out.”

The funny part is you do actually know why- Merlin explained it all to you, once upon a time, while doing work on her own flight suit. A great deal of it has to do with the mesh layer, which allows the witch to interface with the magical energy systems of the wyvern much better- push power to it faster and more smoothly than just the striker-derived leg interfaces. According to what she told you, it also allows for a degree of self-healing by the witch, should she be wounded.

You’d asked why pilots don’t have anything like that- your flight suit is still mostly just Nomex and good old fire retardant Kevlar, and she couldn’t really answer.

[] Maybe it is designed to show off everything?
[] More complete magic interface. They kept the legs bare because the existing interface there works better than the suit material.
[] Just shrug- no reason to bore her, afterall.

Maybe if they made the pilot's suit conductive too the witch could channel magic through it and shield them from the g forces or something. Just seems odd that suits haven't evolved much compared to everything else, just look at our helmet for instance.

“More complete magic interface.” You say, indicating her legs. “They kept the legs bare because the existing striker interface in the Wyvern works better than the suit material.”

She nods. “Makes sense. Can’t they have included the striker interface to incorporate more of the body, though?” She asks. “I mean, not like you need much mobility in the aircraft, right?”

“They thought about it, but it was deemed too dangerous. You’ve heard about witches losing limbs to striker failures, imagine if it’s more than that.”

She frowns. “She frowns. “Yeah, guess I can see that. So what about you? How come we don’t get to enjoy a view? I mean, you get to see Daddy and Issues,” She says, gesturing down at the left and right of her chest.

“No point to it.” You say. “I don’t need a magical interface, and the existing flight suit works just fine. Any major overhauls wouldn’t really add any functionality over what I already have.”

“Didn’t the wartime suit have a trauma harness though?” She asks.

You nod again. “The wartime gear went through a lot of variations. This one was settled on in the 90s when they did the last major VDNI redesign. So far it’s been working.”

“Huh.” She says. “So you’re pretty into the Wyvern, then?”

[x] What about you? what made you go for it?

You nod. “What about you?” You ask. “What made you go for the program?”

She frowns, her eyes focusing out somewhere far away as she does so. “A lot of things, really.” She says. “I’ve always tried to do better than I was, and the wyvern seemed like the next step up from strikers. I qualified for the program, and figured that it was one of those things I kept telling myself I should really do, ya know? After Iraq they told me I qualified, so I said worst they can do is say no, and put in.”

You nod as she continues.

“There’s more than that, I just got out of a shitty situation with my family- don’t ask- and was riding pretty high on the success.” She grins, still looking out past the window of the van. “Got even higher when I got the acceptance notification.”

She’s about to say something else when you hear her suck in a breath. Turning to look, you see what she does- your Wyvern, lit by portable flood lights, being prepped for initial startup and it’s first flight.

Of course, your practiced eye spots your aunt almost immediately, bareleg again and her familiar out, as she stands on the fighter’s back, helping a crew in the armored engine bays.

“So, that’s it, huh?” She asks. “Never actually seen one up close before.”

[x] Yeah, they’re impressive.

“Yeah.” you say with a slight smile as the van pulls to a stop. “They’re pretty impressive.”

Grabbing your flight bag off the floor of the van, you turn around to help Danielle out- she thanks you, but jumps down without accepting the help anyway. “So it’s time to meet Merlin, I guess.” She says, using your aunt’s callsign and well-known nickname.

“She’s pretty easy to get along with.” you respond.

Danielle grins. “I just hope I don’t embarrass myself.” She says.

You laugh, approaching the aircraft with Danielle following just behind you to your left. Merlin’s head pops almost immediately, swiveling around to find you- she smiles after a second, patting the tech next to her on the back and saying something before hopping down, cushioning her landing with a blue shield.

“Morgan.” She says, greeting you with a hug again, then letting go and looking up at you. “You ready to get started?”

[x] Of course, aunt M.

You nod, looking up at the jet. “Of course, aunt M.” you say.

“Glad to hear it.” She says, turning to look at Danielle. “You must be Commander Peterson.” She says. “It’s good to meet you.”

“It’s good to meet you too, ma’am. An honor.” Danielle responds, sounding kind of awestruck- it’s easy to forget that your aunt is often known as ‘the mother of air combat’’ just for everything she’s done to revolutionize it- her work on strikers has kept them entirely relevant in the modern age, and she’s effectively the driving force behind the wyvern program.

Your aunt blushes lightly- she does so often, so it’s nothing you really think of as notable anymore. “T-thank you.” She says. “A-are you ready, commander? I’ll help walk you through startup.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Danielle says.

“Ok. up the ladder then. You first- SIO always enters the aircraft before the pilot, you have more to do.” Merlin says. “I’ll be right behind you. Morgan?”

You nod. “I’ll wait till you’re up.” You say, and she shakes her head.

“Th-that wasn’t what I was thinking.” She says. “Stay down here, and I’ll do your walkaround inspection with you. Either that or we can have John go over it with you, he said he’d be fine showing you how to do it.”

[x] Better that you help the commander, I can go with the chief.

“I’ll do the walkaround with the chief.” You say, looking over to see him approaching. “Better that you help the commander.”

She nods. “John knows the Wyvern almost as well as I do.” She says- which is a pretty good endorsement in his favor, though your aunt usually talks pretty well of people, and the worst you’ve ever heard her say about someone is ‘they need work’.

“Morning, sir.” The chief says, a tin cup from a thermos lid in one hand- full of very, very strong coffee, by the smell of it. “Let’s go.”

You nod, following behind him. “Most of the time, the big stuff will be done by me. Or my counterpart with the fleet. Still, you need to look around. Like up there-” He gestures with his mug at the jet intakes. “You’re not gonna crawl up in there, but you need to get a flashlight and take a look anyway. These engines can eat some small FOD, but you still wanna avoid it as much as possible.” He nods as you fish a light from your shoulder pocket and look in the intakes- they’re clear, of course.

“Your bays are all empty,” He says, stopping next to the nacelle missile bays. “and there’s no conformal pack fitted, so there’s nothing to check there. Still, you’re going to want to take a look up in there and make sure the trays are secure, or that the missiles are attached to the rotary launchers. Go ahead up in and give that tray a couple pulls, see if it wiggles.” He nods when it doesn’t. “A loose tray is bad news, especially in the fleet. We don’t tell Miss Wells this, but a lot of crews just take them out and use a modified system from the lightning 2s.”

“There’s no pylons fitted, so all you can really do is make sure that the panel covers are in place correctly. You should only just be able to see the joint, there and there, see?” He says, pointing them out. “Shouldn’t be any indication of anything leaking or loose, if there is, you’ve got problems. Same with the wing pivot there and the flaps. You can’t go up and check them from down here, but any traces of fluid indicate a bad enough issue that you need to get your chief. Do not, I’ll repeat it, do NOT attempt to fly with evidence of a fluid leak from either the wing pivot point or the flaps.”

1/2
>>
You nod, though you don’t think he sees it. “Gear, mostly the same thing. Check for evidence of fluid where there shouldn’t be, and check the damn tires. You got cords showing in there, you need to let your chief know. You’re ok to operate with up to three showing, but more than that you need to get it changed out. Tailhook should be rolled and stowed on the ground, so just take a look at the door to make sure it’s lined up and secured correctly.”

Following him back to the exhaust he looks up and frowns, then nods. “Right. So you don’t have modules fitted yet, Miss Wells said you’d discuss that later. You’d just check them to make sure they were fit correctly, you shouldn’t see a joint. Your exhausts are three-d thrust vectoring nozzles, you need to look for anything there that looks out of place, unusual heat discoloration, heat discoloration in unusual places, evidence of heat damage, that kind of thing. Keep in mind running WEP on this bastard will burn these things up and pretty quickly, so be sure to tell the crew if you had to use it for more than a couple seconds.” You nod, following still as he crosses under the center bays.

“Your bays are empty, and even if they weren’t, not much you could do but do a visual inspection.” He says, pointing up. “But it’s the same as it is on the nacelles, anything looks loose or missing, you need to grab your chief. He’ll be around before you take off anyway. Your guns, all you need to do over there is make sure the ammo loading hatches are closed. You are loaded guns, so go over and take a look, they on the underside of the wing root, just behind the intakes.”

You look around, eventually finding the hatches, both of which are closed and locked. “Normally you’d check them when you check the intakes on that side.” He continues to walk forward. “The enhanced sensor cluster here under the nose you can’t do much but look for obvious damage- scarring or pitting of the exterior, cracks, that kind of thing. Same with the radome up front, you’re just looking to make sure it’s closed up and locked.”

He stops again by the cockpit ladder, looking at you. “That’s it. We’ll do this again a couple times, and you’ll do walks with Miss Wells too. She knows this bird better than god hisself, so listen to her if she tells you something looks out of place or wrong. Now, do you need help getting strapped in up top?”

[x] I think I’m good chief, thanks.

“I’m good chief, thanks.” You say. “Is there anything else I need to check out?”

He shakes his head. “Just don’t bust your ass falling off the ladder.” He says, grinning. “The holds can get kinda slick at sea.”

You nod. “Thanks, chief.”

He raises his mug of coffee to you, and then turns to walk off, stalking towards one of the floodlights as two sailors start to bring it down. Others are clearing the pad around the wyvern, while a few remain, topping off the tanks and wheeling a standard APU cart into position.

Merlin’s sitting along the canopy rail, reaching down into the backseat position to help Danielle with her straps. While she’s already figured out the interface- you can see the tail of her familiar poking out from between her legs on the seat- she’s still working on the seat straps. Merlin looks up as you step into the cockpit. “I’ll be over in a second if you have trouble, Morgan.” She says.

You nod, hanging your helmet off of the small hook on the side of the ejection seat as you sit down, fidgeting around to get the straps all pulled out from under and behind you. There’s not many, honestly- they’ve got more in common with a four point racing harness than anything else- though there’s not a lot of slack, even before you’ve got it hooked up to your survival vest.

You manage too get it threaded in properly, though you have to leave it all loose to do so, before you go in to tighten the straps down. You get them tight, just as Merlin appears at the side of the cockpit. “Oh, good, you got them.” She says, looking down. “They should be really tight, almost uncomfortable. You’ll get used to it, but you don’t want leave room for yourself to get thrown around in them if you can help it. Here, let me check.”

It only takes her a second to reach down, pulling on the strap tabs that stick out, then tucking them up under themselves. “There, that’ll keep them from floating in negative G” She says. “I’ve got to get down so you can do startup.” She looks down over her shoulder at the ground crew. “They’ve got a cart down there, so I’ll be able to hook into the intercom.” She smiles, indicating your helmet. “Nervous?”

[x] A little, yeah.

You exhale, then nod, unable to lie to your ‘aunt’, even if you’d rather do so to save face. “Yeah.” you nod. “A little.”

She smiles, reaching past you to pull your helmet off the hook and put it in your lap. “You’ll be fine, Morgan.” She says, reassuringly, patting your arm. “You were always meant for this.” She smiles again, then pivots on the canopy rail and hops down, jogging away from the fighter to the cart parked off your nose, about a hundred yards away.

You watch her for a moment, then flop the helmet over and settle it on your head, leaving the visor up and the face mask off as you connect the chin strap and plug your mask into the fighter’s oxygen system and link the backup intercom wires to the panel on your left. You can feel a faint pulling sensation as your helmet’s systems interact with your plugs, retracting the covers and inserting the connectors. It’s an unusual feeling, like being in a very large, empty room, but it’s one you’ve encountered before.

“You on intercom?” Danielle asks a second later as you pull on a pair of gloves and reach up to drop the armored visor in place. You shake your head to get your mask to fall into place so you can respond.

“I’m here.” you say, tightening your gloves down and fastening the velcro straps across their backs.

“Good, was starting to get lonely. Miss Wells said I’d have to get used to the intercom, but it shouldn’t affect our communications too bad. I’ve already retracted the ladder and I’m good for startup. She said we’d have to bring up the AI and computers first on the aux cart and then get flight systems. You good for initial checklist up there?”

She sounds a little more businesslike, though you can still pick up on her excitement, even over the intercom.

Pretty slow update.

It’s probably dinner time.
>>
[x] Let’s get started, at least on the first couple steps.

“Yeah, let’s get started.” You respond, flipping open the top cover of the notes on your thigh board.

“Ok, page one, pre initialization start. Item one.” She says, giving you a second to get to the same page and line item.

The checks- at least the half-dozen or so items you can actually do- are all simple- check switch settings, make sure you’re off battery and on exterior power, make sure everything that’s supposed to light up does and that the boards are all green. You’re just finishing the last item before you have to stop when your intercom pops and Merlin comes on.

“Are you both on?” She asks, looking over at the chief, still drinking his coffee and watching the screens on the computer cart.

“We’re here, ma’am.” Danielle responds. “Pre-initilization is done up to line item six.”

“Ok, good.” Merlin says. “Danielle, you’ll need to continue ahead. Morgan..” She pauses, and you turn to see her looking over at the screen, nodding. “Morgan, sit tight for a minute.”

You can hear the wyvern waking up around you- a pump activates somewhere behind you and the MFDs on your console flicker to life. They cycle through their settings before all returning to a blank input screen.

You follow along for a minute or three, listening in. “Ok, Morgan? Activate your VDNI uplink, please.” Merlin orders. You look over out of the canopy, then reach down to hit the uplink toggle, watching as the safety cover snaps back in place over it as you settle back in the ejection seat, closing your eyes.

You almost don’t notice the transition- probably wouldn’t have, if not for the sudden alphanumerics sliding across the inside of your helmet’s visor. “VDNI link looks good, Morgan.” Merlin says, sounding as if she’s right next to you, her voice right in your ear. “Ok, Danielle, proceed to twelve.”

You blink again as you detect another presence, as if someone’s in the cockpit with you. “XF-02D (mod) Wyvern, BuNo 169290” it intones, the words appearing soundlessly in your head, like in a dream. “Generator online, Sensors Online. Weapons online.”

“Danielle, Morgan?” Merlin calls, causing you to turn and look- blinking when you remember again you’re alone up front. “The AI’s coming online now, but it’ll take about ten minutes to do it’s self-diagnostics. I’m going to get in the instructor chase aircraft, I’ll be flying with them to the NTTR. Begin your engine start checklist and taxi out when the chief clears you.”

1/2
>>
You’d nod, but you’re distracted- the startup is fascinating. Reticules flare lazily in front of you before disappearing seconds later, and the data stream seems overwhelming at first- atmospherics, radar uplink, combat network link- the fighter almost seems confused by the lack of a network for a minute. You almost miss the chief's call a minute later as you start to adapt, shutting off some of the extraneous data and sorting other feeds.

“We’re hot.” Danielle says, a second later. “Jets coming up.”

The turbines start behind you with a rising whine, and you can sense- if not see- the crew pulling the exterior power and computer feeds from their respective ports and closing them up. You can almost feel the slight tugs as they do so, like someone picking at your clothes.

“We’re clear to roll.” Danielle says, a moment later- you don’t have to look over to see the ground crew hustling away, hunched over, carrying the wheel chocks. “Runway 24R, north turn on climbout.”

“This is crazy, isn’t it?” She asks you on the private interplane channel a second later. “How you doing up there? You ok?”

[x] It’s... interesting.

“It’s... interesting.” You respond, still blinking away feeds. “Rolling.”

The wyvern bumps away from it’s spot in front of the hangars, rolling under it’s own power for the first time. Mentally, it’s similar to walking- almost as automatic after a second. “We’ll have site-wide radar coverage over the NTTR.” Danielle says, as you notice the two-place F-16 chase plane begin rolling behind you. “We’ll be mostly alone up there, though we’ll be sticking to the northern part of the range. R4808N and the NTS are restricted airspace, we’ll need to avoid them.”

“Got it.” You say, lining up on the center of the runway- the chase plane will be up after you on a minimum peacetime interval, but won’t roll with you, leaving you the entire span of concrete to yourself.

“Takeoff clearance granted. Climb to angels ten and turn north off the runway.” Danielle says from the back, right as a suggested flight path appears as a dotted green line down the runway- the AI assisting, though it’s still working through it’s diagnostics.

Holding the brakes, you open the throttles, cracking them right into the afterburner range. The roar behind you seems part of you- the excitement of the instant before the center snaps the ball back to you, right before the starting gun goes off. It doesn’t last long- as soon as the A/B light blinks on on the console, and the chime sounds in your head, you release the brakes and are forced back into your seat by the Gs. Lightly loaded, the monstrously powerful jet turbines force your nose up less than a quarter of the way down the runway, and you pull into the sky, retracting your gear and dropping back out of the afterburner range as you turn north.

“Proceed to the NTTR, Morgan.” Merlin calls up- you look down to see the F-16 just now lining up on the runway. “We’ll join you there. We’ll start a standard workup procedure... unless you and Danielle are willing to try something more advanced?”

“Advanced?” Danielle asks, sounding confused- it takes you a second to realize it’s on the intercom “What does she mean?”

“Huh.” Danielle says. “I got the impression she’d fly with you if you asked.” She says. “But not my business. I think we ougghta. Hell, If she thinks you can hack it, that’s gotta be a vote of confidence, right?”

Going back, I don't see where we promised. All she said was to be careful. That said, I don't expect us to pull out second-coming of Fronk maneuvers just yet, as it's our first time in the plane. And on that topic...
>>3284389
Unless I read wrong, we're out here to get a feel for it before we start with the aggressors. Assuming anything goes wrong in this check, we should be at a high enough altitude to level out or bail if necessary. Considering Merlin and Chief along with their assistants have been all over the Wyvern with a fine-tooth comb, we should be fine.
>>
>>3284421
I seem to recall the Wyvern can be tricky to handle, somewhat slippery and a little unstable.
We're also booting up an AI in the back. That thing has the potential to be a wildcard.
>>
>>3284421
true. I thought we had for a second. But still, we wouldn't want to worry her, or make her mad at us.
>>
>>3284421
>we should be at a high enough altitude to level out or bail if necessary.
This is our literal first flight with this system and plane and SIO, why the fuck would we jump headfirst into it and need to worry about bailing out?

Walk before you try to sprint off a cliff anon.
>>
>>3284350
>[x] Probably not smart, not yet anyway.
>>
>>3284461
For that exact reason, We don't know this plane, the plane is still doing diagnostics, and all we have is Danielle's performance on paper and something that she said. We don't know how she'll really perform with the Wyvern, besides, it's generally good form to be prepared for the worst. it was an offhand comment, anyhow.
>>
>>3284421
I'll concede on the AI, though there was safeties for them. Anyways, we should already be well trained on operating the Wyvern. Frank only got a crash course and a manual when he selected it (and probably even wrote the book for it), we got a whole training regimen ready for it in comparison. Granted, a simulator is probably missing the whole VDNI experience.
>>3284461
Just prepared for a worst case scenario...
>>
>>3284350
>[] Probably not smart, not yet anyway.
First flight in a bird, let's keep her nice and easy.
>>
>>3284481
A worst case scenario you're trying to put us in, yes we've been in the simulators, but we've never interfaced with a SIO or our AI, and this is an entirely new method of flying for us.

My worry isn't the physical flying, we wouldn't be in a Wyvern if we couldn't handle that much, my worry is not knowing how we handle the other elements we've not used, and our or their respective limits.
>>
>>3284481
>though there was safeties for them.

>AI with physical access to control surfaces and sensors
>safeties doing anything against an AI that could take over in an emergency

[x] Yeah, let’s see what we can do.

You find yourself agreeing- despite your mother’s warnings, and even knowing she tends to talk you up a little more than you can back up, your aunt is almost never going to get you into trouble knowingly. “We’re game, Aunt Merlin.” You call back, grinning- even without the link, you can almost feel Danielle’s excitement and approval.

“Awright!” She exclaims over the intercom.

“I thought you might be.” Merlin says- you can see her ride, the F-16, below you and about a half mile away. “Alright. I want you to accelerate to eighteen hundred knots, then I’ll run you through a series of hard ACM to see how your control is. If, at any point, you feel uncomfortable, call knock it off, roll wings level and decelerate to three hundred knots.”

Eighteen hundred is about the limit of the wyvern in a clean configuration’s conventional afterburners- and since it requires them, you can’t stay at it long. Merlin doesn’t keep you there long- though she has you throwing the aircraft around the sky in ways you didn’t know were possible. The combined Gs, your sure, will have left bruises- and Danielle is audibly panting in the back when Merlin finally orders you to roll wings level and drop to subsonic speeds.

“Excellent, Morgan.” She says, her fighter rolling slowly across the top of your wyvern as she rejoins on you. “No damage, everything looks good. That was excellent flying, Frank would have been impressed.”

[x] Didn’t do that all for dad.

“Didn’t do that all for dad.” you respond, trying to remind yourself that, from her, that’s a very high compliment. Still, it’s a little patronizing. You regret it pretty quickly after saying it- not because of her response, but just because you can almost see her face fall in your mind’s eye as soon as you say it.

“Well, you did great anyway.” She says- her voice doesn’t seem any less bright for your response. “Danielle, how are you?”

“F-fine.” She says, her breathing becoming more controlled. “Wasn’t expecting it to be quite that wild a ride my first time.”

Merlin probably misses the double meaning behind her words- she just laughs. “It surprised me too. How’s your fuel?”

“We’ve got about thirty minutes remaining.” Danielle responds, just before you can- she must have already been looking at the gauges, since you knew how much fuel you had because of the VDNI.

“Alright. Form up on us and follow us back to Miramar.” Merlin orders- technically she can’t order, being a civilian, but it’s as good as one.

Landing on the base’s long, even runway is easy, even with VDNI- as simple as crawling into bed, almost. You taxi to the hangar, shutting down in front of it. A last look at the atmospherics proves the wisdom of the ground crew- there’s a nasty storm brewing up out of the pacific. The weather shop had mentioned a low out that way- which is why you were out over Nevada instead of the ocean- but the storms weren’t supposed to gather that quickly.

The chief greets you as you exit the Wyvern, having rolled a stairway up to the cockpit as you were shutting down. “It went pretty well, I hear, sir.” He says, handing you a bottle of coke as your boots hit the ground. “Gonna be another busy night for us, helping the AI intake that flight data and learn how to process it.”

>>
“Sorry if we created work for you, chief.” You say, and he shakes his head.

“Hell no. Anyone Miss Wells puts through the paces like that she thinks has promise. I know you two got history, but you pulled it off so it don’t matter. She’s not down yet, but you’re gonna need to help Commander Peterson to the crew van. No flights this afternoon if this fucker-” He gestures back to the angry black clouds “Doesn’t blow over.”

“What’s that mean for us?” Danielle asks, descending the flight stairs- barefoot, you note. Her toenails are a deep purple color.

The chief shrugs. “Asking the wrong guy, ma’am. If I had to guess, ops’ll tell you during the debrief, but traditionally you’d go out and get fuckin hammered with the El-tee. Prolly not an option for you two though, too many eyes watching. I’d you’re askin me what to do, then I’d say wait for Miss Wells. She’ll want to talk to both of you, I’d wager.”

He looks past your shoulder. “But you can ask her after she deplanes.” He says, indicating her F-16 with his coffee mug.

As it turns out, She does want to talk to you after you’ve all had a chance to change out of flight gear- but you can’t help but note that’s the first time you’ve ever seen her in her wyvern’s flight suit. Why would she have worn that, you wonder- especially considering how even she blushes a little bit when you notice.

And that's it for the week, guys! I'd planned to do another run tomorrow, but, again, my folks finally decided on that yard work, so I'll be down there all weekend. The thread got a bit more truncated than I'd have liked because of that, and I'm sorry- I'll make it up as soon as I can, maybe start a day early next week? We'll see what happens.

As always, I'll be around some to answer questions that I can without spoiling any plot developments!

Till next time guys, cheers!
>>

Thanks for running, Ghost.

What is the worst that could happen with VDNI jacks during maneuvers like these? We're worried about bruising, but every pilot has to put up with aches and pains. Just how invasive is this stuff, really?!
>>
>>3284911
Thanks for running, chief
>>
>>3284911
thanks again, ghost.
>>
>>3284911
Thanks for the run! I think I asked earlier but has Morgan received his callsign or is he still waiting on it?
>>
>>3284922

Nothing- the jacks themselves are housed in the Helmet, and then connected from there via a single connection down to the ports for oxygen and information.

Basically if your plugs get damaged, it's cos your helmet was forcibly removed while plugged in. That's usually catastrophic enough that plug damage is the least of your concerns! haha.
>>
>>3284911
Thanks again, chief.

Danielle is top tier so far. Really looking forward to keeping with her.

Also, on another note, would big steelwings have modifications for aircrew witches, like E-3s radar witches as crew which massively boost their range and effectiveness?
>>
>>3284931

Still waiting on it- usually, you wouldn't get one until you hit the fleet.

>>3284937

yep! The NATO AWACS, in fact, have this exact kind of setup.
>>
>>3284911
Great run Ghost!
>>
>>3284939
Great! I suppose that's what I'll be working with then...

It wouldn't be too much of a stretch then to have things like the AC-130 having the same setup.... fun.

Multi-engine strikers seem like a dead end to me. More engines means more power-weight and a larger payload at the cost of fuel consumption. But the more stuff you slap onto a witch the more you deviate from the agility and speed that makes them effective in the first place.
>>
>>3284946

No, not much of a stretch at all. The technology and doctrine got a lot more common post soviet war, and it does seem like something AFSOC would embrace wholeheartedly.
>>
>>3284948

I do hope we also keep a tomahawk all the time too.

You're still Maman Brigitte's baby boy, yes. You're not quite a god of war- but you're plenty capable on your own.

>>

Morgan is very athletic- He played multiple sports, starting in elementary school. Volleyball isn't one of them, but he'd learn quickly and he's in better shape than frank was at this point in his life.

I feel like "could get to space" and "have enough radiation shielding to make it a good idea" are to separate questions. Relying on witch shields (if they even work against rads) wouldn't really work for the amount of time you would spend up there.
>>
>>3285246
Wyvern is probably not designed for leaving Van Allen belt, but radiation shouldn't be a problem for quick suborbital hop with a couple of hundred km apogee.
>>
>>3284906
> but you can’t help but note that’s the first time you’ve ever seen her in her wyvern’s flight suit. Why would she have worn that, you wonder- especially considering how even she blushes a little bit when you notice.
You absolute tease.
>>
>>3284939
But how many AMRAAMs can we fit in a modified B-52?
>>
>>3285257
Wouldn't that still be a couple of hours?
There'd also be considerations with how vacuum would affect all the sensitive fiddly bits, including that fancy AI and cockpit pressure (cockpit is pressurized I assume, but the stress on all that glass would be much higher without anything outside to push against).

Why would you want to take a fighter into space anyway?
>>
>>3285512
