/qst/ - Quests

“Are they going to be alright?” You’re aiming for concerned, but something about your scowling monotone must convey a threat, because rather than answer the Fae decides to raise a palm toward you.

“Their fate isn’t your concern.” The palm blooms into a rainbow of colourful thorns that each drip with so many scents that your nose tingles. “If continuing your pale imitation of life is what you desire. You should do well not to raise the forrest’s ire. With simple answers provide these trees, or your flesh shalt feed the bees.”

Biting back both the urge to laugh and the urge to ask what a bee is, you try to remind yourself that Zar Tan bid you to show respect. Though he also added that you shouldn’t trust her, you manage to neutrally respond; “Is that a promise?”

“Promises? Promises.” She says with hysteria, “What would I do to promise you such grimness? If I am speaking false…” The hand moves closer, “Strike me and witness.”

"Look, I don't care what games you're playing. What do you want?" You say simply.

"This one's wishes are not your concern. Instead you should leave, focus on what you must learn." The creature says, baring teeth that are all together too sharp. Zar Tan rises and puts a hand on your shoulder, "Purps. We must go."

"Why? This thing talks a big game. But aside from you showing it respect, I've seen nothing I can't handle." Your hands find their way to your hips and you cock your chin upward. Almost arrogantly daring the creature to act, "You've got poisons and magic? Big deal."

"I have said it once, don't make me repeat. If you do not make leave, we'll taste your meat. Your ilk are mine and shall not be joining. Back down this folly and see a new morning."

> [PRIDE] You'll let them go and do it happily. Or else your forrest will be nothing but ashes.

Zar tan's green hand clamps around your shoulder and begins dragging you away, you know in your heart of hearts that you could resist him. Something in you want to wipe the smugness out of that fae piece of shit.

But, even if you die. You're not the one who'd pay the price for resistance. This forrest would burn with all of your classmates within, whatever agreement Zar Tan has with the fae would be void and Xanadaar and Cellahad will suffer should you achieve anything but total, flawless and swift victory.

So you swallow your pride and try to prevent the slimy warmth in your stomach from overtaking you. As you're being lead away you promise the Fae one thing, "If you harm them."

"Then you shall come with fire and saw, to harvest and kill like Demon's Claw." She says waving you away.

Zar Tan simply marches with you in his grip. Each step at double time, whether out of sheer haste or an effort to keep you so focused on avoiding the tangling undergrowth that you won't dwell on the situation that you have just walked away from. The teacher curses in Orcish, all the way to the barrier.

You clench your fists hard enough to send thing lines of blood across your palms, today feels like it will not end. Moreso, it feels like everything the world has asked of you today has been insurmountable.

Without any comment or admonishment Zar Tan gathers up all his students and gives closing lectures. With that lack of ceremony and almost a disregarding of the grim fate that could befall your friends in that moment; the class ends. Leaving you as the sole remaining soul standing on the edge of the barrier; Zar Tan seeming to just melt away when your gaze left him.

Without further ado you march off, striding across the courtyards of students busy heading off towards their friends and social activities. They're all just faces and figures as you brush past them. Like wind through tall grass your weaving path is unerring and incessant.

If you had to describe yourself, in your entirety. It would be that you are a woman of focus. You set objectives, you work tirelessly toward them with little care for the cost upon yourself or the obstacles in the way. You have felled a dragon, stood in defence of a town against a dark priest and fought reality warping monsters wearing the face of man. Each and every thing that has stood in your way has been met with pure and forceful will. Their efforts were met with bitter resistance and without fail you have outlasted all of them.

So now, as you open your locker and retrieve your True Saw and fit the silken glove upon your hand. Nothing feels different, the fire in you soul is perfectly tended and stoked into action after what feels like a string of idle disaster aversion.

This is not you stopping Honamurei from doing something she'd regret or an infestation of biological scum from bursting across the streets of your new town; this is a decision you have taken alone. A desire for revenge that has renewed your purpose in this world. Pushing your arms into the under armour that had temporarily replaced the shredded and torn leather gear provided by The Dealer feels right, as if it was the only thing that you could have done.

You have nothing to put over the under armour, so your arms and the majority of your stomach are laid bare. Not the best tactical situation for fighting against Fae who utilise toxins and barbs, but you shall make do. The shorts that you had worn under The Dealer garb are very much basic and solid in colour, but you find solace in the tightness to your muscled legs. Nothing to snag or grip for any grappling foes you might encounter.

A pair of padded sandals designed for both silence and comfort complete the makeshift outfit you'll be wearing to war.

Excellent. Simply Excellent.

A familiar wait settles upon your shoulder as the buzzsaw in your hand grows. A haft flowing out of the centrepiece of the black, silver and gold metal to nest in your hand as easily as a quill to a scholar.

You're getting your comrades back, no matter what any fae. Professor or Headmistress dares to say about it-

"What are you doing?" Asks a deep, but assuredly feminine voice. It seems you were so lost in thought that your huge Sunsister managed to sneak up on you. "You're armed. Cella is missing." She says simply, in a way that lets you know her suspicions.

What a shit professor. And a shit school. He just sent his students off into an apparently hostile area (inside the school grounds?) that he doesn't have any control over and failed to communicate the situation to someone who was clearly worried, or even refer them too a grief counselor ;). Are they students or sacrifices?
DESU he probably has a plan but Purps has no reason to trust him. She's probably going to die again though. The stupid fae didn't even say what it wanted did it? Maybe it's going to mend them.

That one was the OP for a much longer time, so probably best to use that. The one we're using currently is specifically for this arc.

"Look-" You say simply, "As part of a survivalist class we went into the Fae wood. We got ambushed by a Wyvern. Cellahad and the fish guy in our year got paralysed while fighting it."

Jo, as kind as she is, is not the brightest. "Oh. So they're in the medical ward? Are you planning on hunting down the wyvern?"

"No, I'm going to burn down the fae woods until the fae with the white bark skin gives them back." You say this as a matter of fact.

"Did you ask Zar Tan for permission?" Jo says, her face as expressive as granite.

"No but-"

"Or have any plan to get through the barrier?" She continues after your answer.

Were it possible for you to feel embarrassed, you'd probably have red cheeks right now at your short sightedness, "I was just going to break it."

"And unleash all of the monsters kept in there specifically for study on the city." Jo points out, "And like, Fae in the woods? You'd probably never find them."

"I'll smoke them out" You protest, "She even knew as such when she spoke to me."

"And you've barely even spoke to the Dryad. She teaches the lower classes of survivalism. You didn't even wonder why Zar Tan trusted her enough to leave them?" She sounds frustrated with you, like a mother patiently having to explain to their stubborn son that he could not in fact fly by flapping his arms really hard.

"I kind of just assumed he was incompetent." You admit, "I mean, he did send us into the woods without any equipment to see what happens."

"No, you didn't bring the right equipment. And since it's by her bed I assume, Cella forgot her staff." Jo smiles in an attempt to placate you, "Purps, I think you're acting irrationally here. Why didn't you try to speak to Zar Tan or the headmistress? Y'know even if there was trouble? Other people can do things sometimes. You don't have to fight every battle personally."

You pause mid action, pondering over the wise words of your large friend. "Perhaps you're right." You admit, "I haven't talked to this creature beyond trying to intimidate each other. And it's unfair to assume Zar Tan acted out of foolishness or fear, instead of trust."

"Alright so we can go to the dorm or maybe to a place I know c-"

You speak over her, "I'll simply speak to the dryad instead of killing her." It's said as a matter of fact. But this time you're coming prepared and as such you make to walk past Jo and out of the locker area. Instead, for the fourth or fifth time today a large hand grasps your shoulder.

"Wait." She says once you've halted. All you offer is a silent raise of your eyebrow, she pushed past you and opens her own locker. "I can't let you do this alone. And if you're insisting on being armed, I should too."

"What?" You exclaim as she pulls the massive greatsword and buckler out of her own equipment store. Placing the weaponry onto the metal benches with reverent care, "I'm going to go to the Faewoods. To meet with the creature who is only so happy to flash toxins in my face and-"

Jo is paying your complaints no mind, simply strapping on her plate armour, as if this was a walk in the park. "I am far from the best diplomat, so it could go poorly."

"So it's good I come with you then." She retorts smugly, giving you a smile that lights up her face.

You seethe, your heavy polesaw switching to a pair of claws that you point at Jo, "No it's not. It's worse."

She hefts her buckler and straps it onto her forearm, still giving you that annoyingly happy smile. "Not at all. It means you have backup if you get through the barrier and find yourself in trouble."

"Fine you can come with me." you concede, crossing your arms like a petulant child, "But you leave the moment I say."

"I go where you go. If you stay I stay Sunsister." Jo says, "I don't think you realise just what the word means."

You do, of course you do. You have the entirety of Minerva's religion hardwired into your brain because of your connection to her. "Of course I do. But I'm choosing not to force that on you; because I'm not some puppet to Minerva's will and neither are you."

You mean to walk away and get going to the Fae Woods, but something in Jo's tone makes you stop. "Purps, you kind of are Minerva, you know that right? Like; being her champion... I kind of have to protect you."

It takes a second to parse things, but once you have you begin reevaluating your friendship in order to work out if Jo actually liked you or was just following her duty. "But if you saw me as Minerva made flesh. you'd be calling me Lady purps." You say aloud, gripping the edge of the door hard enough for cracks to form on the ancient stone. "Not Sunsister."

"Only because you've been keeping the champion thing a secret. I've followed your lead and tried to treat you as an equal my lady." As you stand in the doorway, you're cold. Considering the benefits to having a zealot follow your every whim and watch your back in all things.

As Minerva's champion, technically you are above Sunsister status. Technically you could take control of the inquisition, the church and command all the followers of the yellow sun as the living incarnation of a Goddess. None in any of those bodies could stand against your rule without becoming an oathbreaker; only Minerva herself could stand against you.

The first step down the path of ruling by divine right? Is what words you utter in the equipment locker of the Academy.

> I am your Sunsister. Your Friend.Your Equal. Our Lady and I are completely separate. Please, do not think of me as part of her.

Without knowing what you're going to say, you open your mouth and speak. "I'm not Minerva." You manage, keeping yourself calm and neutral, "I am Purps. I don't speak for her, I don't have any right to Arch Lectorship or any desire to be badgered for opinions on church decor and scripture debates." You step close to Jo and take one of her hands in both of yours, "I'm your Sunsister. Your friend. I'm your equal in all ways."

"Purps, you're just saying it to make me happy. I know what you are." She squeezes your hand, "She has picked you."

"And yet you're the more devout of us. I might be stronger, or wield more of her power. But that doesn't mean I'm not your Sunsister. You'd die for me and I'd die for you." You pull her to her feet and reach into her locker for the final piece of her breastplate. "So let's get into some trouble together?" A little life returns your voice as you shrug.

"Of course. Let's try and bring Cellahad back." She says, slamming a gauntleted fist into a steel palm.

"And Xanadaar." You remind her, leading the way from the locker room. The clanking footsteps of your companion steeling your spirit.

"Do we have to? That thing gives me the creeps." She shudders, "The Sea Shanta back home were all degenerates and cannibals. Some even worshipped Darna."

"Well, as far as I know he's no Darnite. And I can attest that he seems decent and orderly." You and Jo both swing over to the ancient and gnarled woods that dominate the backside of the Academy. "If he was anything but honourable, I'd suggest he would not have taken those quills for Cellahad and I."

Jo seems to consider it, "But what if he was just saving his meals? You know how animals get with food."

"Jo."

"Yeah?" She responds.

"He's not an animal. Don't be rude." You scold, noticing that there is almost nobody crossing the courtyards after class. It is the time for evening meals, but such a populated metropolis as Academy City and with so many students enlisted; you expected to see somebody.

"Fine. But only if you actually try to be diplomatic with the Fae." She insists, "I'm too hangry to deal with an all out brawl."

The two of you stop at the edge of the FaeWood, the shimmering silver dome barrier that Zar Tan bypassed with his crest blocking any further encroachment. Up close, you can practically taste the wards that have been placed upon it and feel the suppressed whispers of forest spirits in your mind. Without this magic, you're pretty sure the arcane magicks would be trying to ensare your will.

"So, what's the plan Purps?" Jo asks, seemingly amused that you might be thwarted so easily.
