In the far future, biotechnology advances by leaps and bounds, creating stunning achievements in medical, civil, and military applications. Illness becomes a thing of the past, and genetic modification is as commonplace as cosmetic surgery.

However, like all great advances, unchecked progress and experimentation has led to abuse and corruption. Ultra powerful megacorporations that monopolized the latest biotech have risen to be the great powers of the age, waging secret wars of sabotage, espionage, and deceit to get ahead of each other.

In order to fuel their rampant growth, megacorps develop lethal diseases and viruses, horrific bio-organic abominations, and ever more exotic genetic modifications to both sell to the highest bidder and unleash upon each other.

The rampant proliferation of bioweapons, and the need to contain them, has given rise to a new profession, the BIOWEAPON HUNTER.

You are LEWIS, a Hunter specializing in hunting down biological threats with your T-Doll companion HK!

It's been a few days since the big Umbrella birthday party, and things had been quiet. A little... too quiet, in your opinion.

Sure, you had done a few jobs in the time between, but they were all relatively small, minor affairs. Nothing too serious or high paying. Things from Lucina's end were also worryingly silent. She hasn't called or tried to contact you since the party. You sigh as you mull you options at your desk.

"Is something the matter, Lewis?" HK asks.

"Ah, nothing much." You grunt. "Is something up."

"I was just intending to remind you that it's lunch break period now." HK notes.

Ah, right. Guess you had a bit more free time, now.

Well, you were kinda curious where Hank went off to. He wasn't at his desk.

Honestly, you were a bit curious as to how he was adjusting to his life of semi-retirement. Sure, he liked to bitch and moan loudly about it, but... it was Hank. He openly bitched and moaned about pretty much everything, so you never took any of it seriously.

Since there wasn't really any jobs going on, you figured you'd have some leeway to take a little time off. But where to find him...?

Hm, if Hank's taken off, then it's most likely to his favorite diner, the one that serves breakfast all day. Goddamn that sounds pretty nice these days.

"Are we leaving the building?" HK asks curiously.

"Well, I'm gonna go pay Hank a visit." You grin to HK. "I'm sure he also ditched G and she doesn't have much to do right now. How about you keeper her some company?"

"Affirmative." HK nods. "Please do not hesitate to summon me if you are in distress."

"Of course."

With that, you and HK part ways as you head for the exit. You don't bother getting your car out of the garage. The diner wasn't too far. Just a few minutes of walking. Quickly enough, the diner comes into view. One of those small, still somehow family owned places, tucked away in a shaded corner underneath an elevated bridge. Not exactly a big crowd, but definitely a loyal one. All older people like Hank, too.

You sort of wonder just how much longer it would last.

Shaking those shady thoughts out of your head, you continue towards the diner, where you see Hank through one of the windows, but curiously enough, he's not alone.

One of the STARS members... Barry, was it? Was sitting just across from him in the same booth. Given Hank's previous stint in the RCPD and your assumption of Barry's age, they were probably familiar with each.

What could they be talking about, though?

You head on into the diner and give Hank a wave.

"Hey, figured I'd find you here, old man." You grin.

"Oh no, the Boss send you after me?" Hank groans.

"Nah, I was just bored." You shrug and then give a respectful nod to Barry. "Officer."

"Hah, you can just call me Barry!" The grizzled officer laughs. "So you're Hank's current partner? Lewis?"

"That's right." You confirm.

"That's great!" Barry grins. "Come on, take a seat! Can't have you standing up the whole time like that, right?"

"If you're ordering anything, you're paying for it." Hank grunts.

"Sure, sure." You roll your eyes as you take a seat next to Hank.

"I had my suspicions." You nod. "You and Hank seem to act pretty tight between each other."

"Dang, you never even told him?" Barry glances over to Hank.

"Different time. Different life." Hank shrugs as he sips his coffee.

"Guess you always were a grouch, even before you got old." Barry concedes.

"We're technically not even partners anymore, either. I'm a desk jockey now." Hank sighs. "And no, it ain't because of any screwups. Just... my age, I guess."

"Yeah, I get that feeling." Barry nods sympathetically. "I find it getting harder and harder to keep up these days. All these biomods going around and crap. Even some of our younger guys are putting that shit in their bodies."

"You don't like biomods?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Don't trust anything in my body that wasn't made by God himself." Barry grumbles. "But I gotta admit, seeing what some of the kids can do these days... I do get the temptation from time to time. Might even be able to keep me in the force a few more years."

"Forced retirement?" Hank asks pointedly.

"Not official yet, but there's whispers." Barry sighs. "Only so far experience and good judgment can take you, you know."

"It is." Barry sighs. "But, well, guess it's up to me to figure out how to work this out."

"You could always take a desk job like me." Hank chortles.

"Ugh, my eyes don't work so well these days, and neither do my wrists." Barry chuckles.

"That's what you get for using your toys so much." Hank retorts.

"Haha, well, guess I can't argue against that." Barry smiles as he pats the gigantic hand cannon holstered to his hip.

"Retirement doesn't sound like too bad a thing." You shrug. "Besides, can't they like, make you a trainer something? Bet that will be a bit more exciting than a desk job." You suggest.

"You know what, that doesn't sound half bad." Barry nods. "I'll have to talk to Chief Lucy about this. Probably can get something to work."

"That's the spirit." You grin.

"Guess that means I can set aside some more time for my girl. The Missus would be lot happier about that, too." Barry continues.

You see Hank wince a bit.

"Aw shit, sorry, Hank." Barry says apologetically. "Forgot that was a touchy subject for you."

You decide not to press the issue, and there's a bit of a awkward silence as both Hank and Barry continue to dig into their breakfasts, both of them dropping the topic as well.

"Anyways, Lewis, was it?" Barry looks back to you. "You a friend of the Chief, or something?"

"Why would you ask that?" You blink.

"Well, you've been hanging around her for a bit, and she's 'deputized' you on two occasions now." Barry gives a smug grin as he sets down his coffee mug. "Cops gossip too, you know. Thing is, nobody's got the guts to ask the Chief about it."

"Including you?" You ask.

"ESPECIALLY me." Harry chortles. "Figured I'd have a better shot asking the other side!"

you keep saying that like it's going to make any instant action anything but reckless and stupid. I don't trust anons at all at this point, so minimal contact with her for a while is better than charging right back with no plans or explanations. After all, how would you explain the actions of Lewis that night? that even when our given choices were totally normal, anons suddenly went retarded and used a stupid write-in for no real logical reason? Plenty, ranging from friends from school to coworkers. Where else did you think I got my info from?

I mean look, not all people are the same, and some women will react the way you described. But what I've learned is that it's better to assume they're emotional and irrational and treat them like landmines that needs time and patience to defuse, vs thinking they're like your buddies that can forgive and forget whatever disagreement in a a day or less just by saying sorry about it. I mean I DO know one girl that's actually that easy going since middle-school, but most of us guy friends think of her as another guy anyways, so that's not a standard to use for most women.

Well, you guess you should pay Lucina a visit, at the very least. The fact she hasn't gone out of your way to contact you was a bit concerning, and she was either too busy or apparently was in no mood to answer your calls.

"Think I'll go pay Lucina a visit." You respond.

"Hoooo boy, good luck with that." Hank pats your shoulder in sympathy. "If things go south, I am not paying your bail."

"Never expected you to." You retort.

"Heh, well stay safe, then. And don't do anything too dumb."

Hank then shuffles out of the diner, leaving you alone with your thoughts. How should you go about meeting Lucina, actually?

You almost miss it at first, but you manage to catch a glimpse of HK on the street, hiding just out of sight in a nearby alley. You blink in confusion, but she disappears the moment a small group of pedestrians walk across the alley, momentarily blocking your view.

Was that... what you actually saw?

You quickly jog across the street to where you saw her. No obvious signs of her presence, but being a T-Doll, she'd be well versed in covering her tracks. You then glance back out the alley mouth, and you can quickly see that from this vantage point, she had a clear line of sight directly into the diner.

Was HK... spying on you?

Your thoughts were already buzzing as you returned to the office. Given HK's... situation, you weren't sure if this was a hidden function in her programming, or some sort of emergent behavior on her own part. Either way, it was concerning.

You're still thinking about this odd revelation when you return to the office, where HK is already waiting for you at the entrance.

"Lewis, welcome back." HK says politely to you.

"Yeah, thanks." You respond, deciding that maybe this was a matter to talk to Nemo first when you had the chance. "Everything fine?"

"No incidents or anomalies." HK shakes her head. "Did your outing go well?"

"Yeah, nothing happened." You give her a half lie.

"That's good." HK smile. "What is our next task?"

"I'm gonna go pay Lucina a quick visit." You say. "Come on."

HK loyally follows you to the car, where you get in and turn it on. As the engine hums, you glance back at HK, who's just casually sitting in the front seat like always. Was what you saw merely a figment of your imagination? You weren't totally sure any more.

Swirling with uncertainty, you put the car in drive and head out.

>And that's it for tonight! Still getting back on my feet after the break but it's great to be back! The thread will continue on Saturday, so don't miss it!
>>
I’d just like to point out, if it wasn’t clear enough, in simple words, that talking about this to Nemo before we ask HK herself could be showing that we don’t trust her.

Geez, what an overreaction. Did you miss the part where she has blood on her hands? He was quoting one of the lines she has that hints at her being a yandere. Not to mention the time in the game where she tries to murder M16A1 while the latter is trapped behind enemy lines, in the misguided belief that she is the superior AR-15 derivative and must eliminate the others.

As you slowly drive over to Lucina's apartment, your mind was still a swirl of thoughts, both over Lucina's anger at you and HK's recently odd behavior that you have begun to notice.

Still, you had your priorities, and right now it was Lucina that you had to be focused on. You didn't realize she'd still be peeved over what happened between you and Vahlen after the party but... well... maybe you should have. You hope that a apology would help ease the situation.

Though, as you drive, you wonder whether it would be a good idea to get some sort of peace offering for Lucina or not. You definitely knew what she would like, but you were a bit concerned that she might find the move as patronizing or something...

Heh, Lucina never liked to admit it, but she always had something of a sweet tooth. Something that you've taken advantage of more than once in your long friendship. Hopefully this same trick would work this time.

"Hold on, HK, we're going to make a quick stop." You say as you change your car's course.

"For what purpose?" HK asks curiously.

"Just getting a bit of a peace offering." You explain. "Gonna grab some..."

And thank freaking god, you mange to find what you were looking for. Chocolate covered peanut butter cups. Lucina freaking loved these things as a kid and you were pretty sure she wouldn't be able to resist them.

"Is there something special about these?" HK asks curiously as her eyes scan the box. "My sensors indicate there is nothing exceptional about the ingredients."

"It's all about the sum of the parts." You grin. "Chocolate and peanut butter are great by themselves, but putting them together? A goddamn masterpiece."

"Noted." HK nods, still staring curiously at the candy, as if debating whether to try one or not.

Meanwhile, you don't waste anymore time and make a beeline straight to Lucina's apartment tower. Building security doesn't react to your return and ride the elevator up to her penthouse floor.

With HK standing a bit back and holding the box of candy for you, you ring the doorbell with a loud buzz. The door opens a slight crack, revealing ST-AR, who squints at you suspiciously.

"Oh. It's you." She glowers. "About time you decided to show up."

The T-Doll then stands back and opens up the door, allowing you inside.

"Come on, I'll let her know you're here." She says as she leads you to the living room.

HK seems to give ST-AR a someone intense stare as you walk. If the other T-Doll noticed it at all, she made no visible signs of it.

Both T-dolls pause and stare at you.

"Look, it's nothing like THAT." You assure them. "I just wanna talk with her, that's all!"

"Uh huh. Guess this box of chocolates is meant for just talking." ST-AR rolls her eyes.

"I do not understand the purpose of this." HK remarks.

"Jeez, well, I guess I can do a bit of explaining, then." ST-AR shakes her head a she guides HK out of the apartment. "You see, when a man and woman like you very much..."

You purposely and strategically leave the box of chocolate out on the table where Lucina could clearly see it before taking a seat on the couch.

"All right, Lewis, what are you-" Lucina pauses as she strides into the room, her eyes instantly catching site of the box of chocolate peanut butter cups.

Lucina gives you that type of look where she likes yet hates you at the same time.

"Damnit, Lewis." She groans.

"What? Is something wrong?" You grin.

"...maybe." Lucina grumbles as she swiftly picks up the box and tears the wrapping open.

Well, she was listening now, and she's definitely in a better mood know with her guilty pleasure in hand...

Lucina is already nibbling on a peanut butter cup and she pauses and nods.

"Shit, I want to still be mad at you, I guess it's understandable. Neither of us were in a particularly familiar situation." Lucina sighs. "Still, it kind of caught me off guard seeing you flirting with a complete stranger like that."

"So, uh," You pause, trying to find a new subject to talk about. "How's ST-AR been doing with the force? She fitting in?"

"Yet she sticks around you quite a lot." You point out.

"Well, I'm sure it's because she's obligated to because of her programming." Lucina smiles sadly. "I'd like to think it's because we have a rapport with each other, but... I honestly don't know either way."

You nod, reminded bit how you similarly don't really know what HK is thinking at all times.

"Maybe they're more human than we think they are." You point out.

"Maybe they are." Lucina agrees.

There's another brief silence before you speak up again.

"So... what's going to happen next?" You ask. "For us?"

Lucina pauses, but her eyes widen as she begins to comprehend what you've asked. She frowns and looks away, out one of her penthouse windows.

"I... honestly don't know." She mumbles. "There's been this gulf between us for so long, and now I have so many other responsibilities and obligations as Police Chief..."

Her hand balls into a fist. A sure sign of her anxiety over her new position.

While Lucina's distracted, you take the chance to stand up from the couch and wrap your arms around her in a hug.

"Don't worry about it, Lucy. We've gotten this far on our own already, just think about what we can do together."

"I can already imagine all the collateral damage we can cause together." Lucina rolls her eyes, but she smiles and returns the hug. "Thanks. It's...been a long time since I've been able to talk to someone like this."

"Well you better get used to it." You smirk.

"Oh my GOD, you going to a police poker night? That's almost too much!" Lucina wheezes. "You must have made a real impression on Barry if he went out of his way to invite you!"

"Well, Barry seems like a pretty friendly guy." You point out. "I kinda like him."

"He's one of the best in the force." Lucina nods. "And certainly one of STARS' greatest assets."

"He seemed pretty concerned about retirement, though." You explain to her. "Guess there's a lot of talk floating around that he's on the way out."

"Ah..." Lucina falls silent and she looks away. You immediately pick up on her shift in body language.

"You're the one pushing for it?" You blurt in surprise.

"It's for his own good." Lucina explains, crestfallen. "I know he's a staple of the force, but his age and his refusal to biomod means he increasingly can't keep up with the demands of the job. He's been falling behind in all physical performance evaluations for the past two years now."

"So you're kicking him out to protect him." You conclude.

"Sooner or later, he's going to get killed by a BOW he can't handle, or worse, he can get his team killed if he can't keep up with them." Lucina murmurs. "I can't play favorites any more, Lewis. I have an entire police force to take into consideration now."

You want to say something, but you're not sure what.

>I guess that makes sense.

"He really doesn't want to go, you know." You tell Lucina. "I've only talked to him once, but even I could tell the force is everything to him."

"I know that, which is why this decision is so difficult." Lucina sighs. "The best I can do is transfer him to an academy or instructional role. He can still do some good there."

"Yeah, I mentioned that possibility to him. He seemed willing to give it a try." You note.

"It's just..." Lucina sighs loudly as she leans back in her couch. "It's hard to imagine STARS without Barry. And then there's all the talk about his replacement."

Lucina then takes a quick glance at you and smirks.

"Maybe you should try out, huh?"

"Lucy, I would make the WORST cop ever." You roll your eyes.

"I know, I just would have liked kicking you out, myself!" Lucina giggles. "But yeah, don't worry about Barry. I'll make sure to look after him."

"You'd make quite the supervillain." You laugh.

"Oh really, now?" Lucina replies with mock offense. "We could be partners in crime, then!"

"Wouldn't that be something?"

Both you and Lucina giggle like children at the verbal sparring before calming down again.

Not to dwell on Barry's situation but I think you are overlooking something. While there might not be an opening right now, what about transferring Barry into a command position, like heading up homicide or something like that. You're the chief now so you could do that. That way you get to keep his experience in house, Barry is getting a promotion, a pay raise, a cushy desk away from danger, and he is guy the rank and file could look up to.

"So, uh, you got any problems on the job you need help with?" You ask, a tad curious how things on her end were going.

"Paperwork. Lots and lots of paperwork." Lucina gives a devious grin. "Want to help fill some out."

"Ahahaha, not THAT kind of problem." You laugh nervously.

"Well, things have been quiet so far, so there's nothing I can't handle myself." Lucina shrugs. "Besides, it's not as if I can pay you or anything."

"Just doing my civic duty." You wink.

Lucina just chuckles.

"Ah crap, I better start going." You wince as you check the time. You still had to head back to meet up with Hank before the poker game. "You gonna be all right?"

"I've been all right on my own for years now. I think I can last a night." Lucina remarks. "Go ahead and play with the boys. Don't let them bully you too much."

"I'll be sure to give them a fighting chance."

Lucina escorts you to the front door, where ST-AR and HK are standing guard. Both T-Dolls seem to be staring at each other rather frostily, but you were pretty sure that was normal behavior between them. ST-AR certainly was the odd one, even if she was highly experienced.

"Come on, HK, we're rolling out." You tell her as you open the front door.

"Affirmative." HK nods as she follows your lead.

"See you later, then." ST-AR gives an unmotivated wave as the door closes.

>Ask HK if there's an issue between her an ST-AR.

"HK, is there an issue between you and ST-AR?" You ask as the both of you ride the elevator back to the ground floor.

"We just have a minor disagreement over our intended functions." HK says simply. "Simply put, ST-AR constantly reminds me not to make attachments to my assigned partner aside from my programmed obligations. It's quite infuriating that she keeps repeating the obvious to me."

"Well, she is more experienced than you." You point out. "She's one of the first T-Dolls ever made."

"Which makes her inferior." HK frowns. "As a lesser model T-Doll, what gives her the authority to dictate my own directives?"

"None, I suppose." You shrug.

"Exactly." HK nods. "Which is why I constantly find ST-AR's behaviors unstable and intrusive."

Well, you guess this was just some T-Doll version of a rivalry or something. A bit odd, but ultimately no that surprising when you put some thought into it.

There's a chime and elevator doors slide open. You stride out with HK following close behind.

It was time to play some poker.

So when are we gonna make the embarrassing comparison of Lewis and Lucina's relationship to a peanut butter cup?

Ahhh Star being so old she watched her partners die, so while more human in speech/more personable, she's trying to warn HK away from heartbreak
>>

Speaking of kids, Lewis better use protection if there are any lewds before revealing the truth.
>>
Rolled 10 (1d20)

>>3192631
How much money do we make then?
>>
>>3193094
We really need to be honest with her ASAP anyway. We do NOT want the way she finds out to be us having to go all sparkly in a life or death situation.
>>
>>3194070
As much as I am inclined to agree, the only problems we have are the complications in explaining it because we aren't just revealing Lewis' secret, but also Carol, Alice, and her own parents.

I wouldn't be surprised if she backs out after learning some of her closest family and friends lied to her, or that if an enemy were to learn of this, then the whole world would be against us as well as painting targets on relatives and friends.
>>
>>3194209
But at the same time, she deserves to know the truth.
If she's going to be with Lewis, and if Lewis really loves her (which I believe he does), then she deserves to know what she's getting into.
>>
>>3194345
Maybe we could try to get both families on Alice's ranch for a big dinner and get together, but in reality it's just a way to get Lucina and Nemo into the fold? If they think it's one big prank, Lewis and Carol could demonstrate their abilities.

The whole conversation could start with what Lucy thinks their parents did during the Magical Girl-Invader War.
>>
>>3194517
I like this idea. What's the date in-universe right now?
>>
>>3194634
It could also be hilarious if they think everyone gathered is trying to recruit them into a cult...

I hope a certain Magical Girl cult didn't survive in secret and treats Alice and Carol as a Mary-like figure, and Lewis as the Messiah due to his mixed genealogy and what he represents for the future of humanity (Which is inaccurate since I think the next stage of humanity is whatever children Lucina and Lewis pump out).

So what exactly sets Lucina apart from all the other genetically modified designer babies in the world?

Did Egan throw in super rare prototypes that may be considered unethical?
>>
>>3195106
Simple, she has quite a bit of Auntie Tarin in her.
>>
>>3195120
... Does Tarin exist in this universe?
>>
>>3195260
IIRC she was part of the Hunter team that Alice was a part of in the previous quest.
>>
>>3195291
After skimming the archives real quick, it looks like Merc used Tarin's pictures for Lucy, but she doesn't appear herself.
It's probably for the best. Alice and Carol are terrifying enough
>>
>>3194517
I just hope Nemo will take the news alright. We know she has a thing about not being an equal to her sister. Last thing we need to do is to add Carol and Lewis to the mix of people she's in the shadow of.
>>
>>3195552
Should we even tell her at all?
>>
So . . . . Just looking at this for the first time, is this a fetish quest?
>>
>>3195573
Except for the QM's fetish of reusing characters between quests, not really.
>>
>>3195552
>>3195568
I was hoping that by including her in the conversation, she would be less likely to freak the hell out and potentially stab us in the back rather than feed her complex by only telling her sister.
>>
>>3195576
Just reading through the first thread in the Archives . . .

Are you being honest with me here?
>>
>>3195581
Unless your definition of fetish differs significantly from mine, yes.
>>
>>3195580
I wanted to ask "how would she find out", but then remembered that plot convenience is a thing, so you might be right.
>>
>>3195336
If I recall correctly, Alice had nicknames for all the hunters because she could never remember their actual names.
