>New York, May 7th, 1986

The city at night came alive in ways it never could during the day, with lights and neon signs illuminating the streets. It was a filthy, grimy place, sweltering in the summers, freezing in the winters, prone to flooding and teeming with crime... But it was home, and truthfully, there wasn't anywhere else like it in America. Maybe even the world, if you were going to drone on about how much you loved the city. However, you had a friend to catch up with.

"Geeze, c'mon you slowpoke! I'm still trying to go to the movies tonight after we grab Bruce, y'know!" Harry yelled back, standing in the doorway in front of you. A backdoor into the Oscorp tower, probably the most intimidating, looming building in the city if you were going to be quite honest.

"Look, Banner's probably not even going to be able to come out. You know how uptight he can be about that internship," You answer back, jogging into the doorway after your friend. Osborn was going to be the death of you one of these days... Keeping a brisk pace through the narrow, maze-like halls, you followed Harry further inside, deeper into the building. At this time of night, beyond the security staff and late night scientists, you didn't actually think that there was anyone else in the building.

Harry's premium access keycard was keeping the two of you from getting swamped with guards though as you stalked through the building quickly, up stairs and through elevators, all with the intent on surprising Bruce. The nerd could be a arrogant, stubborn asshole at times, but he was still your friend and deserved a night of fun on the town.

"Are you really sure it's okay to be skulking around like this?" You asked, eyes widening as the two of you came up to the heavy doors that separated the research division from the rest of the building. "Neither of us are exactly employees, right? Isn't your dad going to kill you once he finds you swiped his keycard?"

"Dude, you're worrying too much! I swear-"

>"-Ben, you really have to calm down. I'm using this totally responsibly, I swear."
>"-J.J, don't you want the big scoop on the projects we're doing in here? You're chomping at the bit, aren't you?"

Your name is John Jonah Jameson, but most people tend to call you J.J. And for as long as you can remember, you, Banner, and Harry has been best friends. Has it been easy dealing with Bruce's lack of social skills or Harry's profound lack of foresight? No. But you're not exactly perfect yourself, so in the end sometimes a man has to compromise.

Like rushing into a poorly lit, questionable lab. Yep, definitely the type of situation Harry was drag you into. "Your pops gets millions of dollars from the government to come up with gizmos to fight the reds, yet somehow he can't afford basic lighting in his building?"

"Hey, my dad's frugal, first and foremost. He'd rather spend that money on killing ruskies, alright?" Harry chirped back, looking around the lab curiously. "Besides, quit flapping your jaw and help me look for Bruce. This lab is massive..."

As you began to look around, it's not hard to see that Harry's previous statement wasn't that incorrect. If anything, it was even harder to navigate than the regular halls of the main building. Some of the darkened rooms and experiments didn't even make any sense, some of them sealed off with big, impressive doors and marked as 'classified', others more easily observable, like the massive container holding a distressing number of spiders, in a room filled with similar exhibits. It included scorpions, some form of armored bug, and a few other varieties of insect you couldn't quite put your finger on.

Regardless, as the two of you managed to walk deeper inside of the building, you could feel your fingers itch for your camera. It might not have been the most legal per-say, but your boss at the Daily Bugle paid top dollar for pictures of anything superheroic, and weirdness like this. Unfortunately, this time around you left your polaroid at home. It's the one thing on your mind as you and Harry approached what had to be the only lit up office in the entire research division, two muffled voices coming from within, one familiar and the other foreign.

"-t's not tested yet, sir! I really think that maybe we should-" Bruce's voice, weak but stubborn in the face of the deeper man who cut him off.

"Think about it, boy! You could make history! We're on the verge of something extraordinary here, don't you see that? The gamma radiation serum has been perfected, and your modest frame makes you an optimal candidate."

"Yes, but..." Bruce's voice trailed off, resistances fading.

"Bruce. You trust me, don't you?"

>You and Harry aren't even supposed to be here. Maybe it's best to just listen and trust Bruce to do the right thing.
>You're not waiting for things to go pear-shaped. You need to get into the office, and now, before Bruce does something crazy.

Bruce Banner has many, many flaws, some of them being the fact that he was about as physically intimidating as Richard Nixon, but that didn't mean he was dumb enough to take whatever this guy was offering. Honestly, who would be as silly to take some untested, mysterious super soldier serum? Someone who was willing to take the risk of being a real menace, that's who!

"...I'll do it, Dr. Connors." Bruce's voice was weak, and small, and barely audible through the wall, but you heard those words leave his mouth all the same. You and Harry share one panicked, surprised, befuddled look, before moving in concert with one another towards the door to the office. Barging in, you could already tell you were going to be too late.

The needle of a syringe was in his arm, the plunger being pushed in as Banner and an older man you didn't recognize were at the opposite side of the cramped office, filled to the brim with equipment. Though what really draws your eye is the glowing green fluid being injected into Bruce. Nothing good ever came of something glowing and green being injected into you, that was like rule number one of every science fiction movie you've ever seen and pulp serial you'd ever read!

"Stop!" Harry called out, but it's too little too late as Bruce winced, the serum being pumped into him. The older man, the doctor, looked at the two of you with such a surprised, incredulous expression, more baffled than anything else.

"Who are you children?! How did you get past security?"

"I'm the son of Harry Osborn, that's who! Does my father know you're experimenting on your interns?" The two of them began to get into it, but that just meant they weren't paying any attention to Bruce, while you could see the frail, skinny kid with the thick lenses on his face hunch over in pain, face scrunched in an expression of agony. It's when his veins begin to glow green, and his eyes are turning a different color entirely, that you feel comfortable making the assumption that things have definitely gone off the rails for your evening of fun.

He's trembling now, and that's enough to get both Connors and Harry to look at him, Connors wearing an expression of curiosity and concern, moving to Bruce's side in an instant. "This pain is to be expected, yes? How do you feel?"

"Doctor..." There's the sound of something ripping, something behind Bruce, but you're not sure what it is until you begin to see him grow. Muscles contracting, flexing, teeth grit. "God, why am I so angry?!"

Goddamnit, Banner.

His voice didn't sound right. It was too deep for the normally quiet, reserved, but sharp-tongued Bruce. You're a touch more concerned about the splotches of green beginning to grow across his skin, the way his body was bulging in strange places, growing as the seconds ticked by, with the old doctor Connors, Harry, and yourself taking steps away from him with each new growth. Every new transformation, explosion of flesh and skin, probably took a few years off your life. And the worst part of this entire thing?

Your fingers were still itching for your camera.

"What did you give him?" Harry demanded from Connors in a yell, sounding more and more like his father as the seconds ticked by.

"It was a serum derived from what remained of the original notes of Abraham Erskine! However, in order to replicate the explosive muscle growth, other sources were needed..." The good doctor answered, edging closer against the door as a roar was let out from Banner's quickly altered, almost feral features. "We settled on a species of monitor lizard, and gamma radiation..."

Then, almost as if he was waking up from a nap, the roar stopped. Banner's eyes closed, and quiet settled over the room. There was nothing save for the panicked breathing of you, Harry, and the Doctor, as the world came to a stop. Nothing until cold, yellow eyes opened, and a growl that sounded utterly inhuman ripped out of him.

"He's...some kinda hulk!" Harry blurted out, but it was hardly heard as another gut-wrenching roar erupted from the massive figure before you, all muscle, easily somewhere in the range of eight feet tall, and with a long tail waving behind it as it charged at the three of you.

Or, more specifically, doctor Connors.

>Dive to push the Doctor out of the way. He may have been an asshole, but this wasn't justice, and that wasn't Bruce.
>Grab Harry and run. If whatever Bruce was now was angry, better he take it out on the guy that caused this.
>Throw something at Bruce and grab his attention to lead him away. Nobody needed to get hurt tonight, not if you could help it.

This feels about as much of a time as any to begin to explain the dice mechanics of this quest. Using 1d100s, I'll set a DC that you'll have to roll over. Modifiers, whether it be through equipment, skills, or other effects, can lower the DC you need to succeed at a given task. Additionally, I'm going to introduce the 'quip' system. As befitting a spider-totem, even one this curmudgeonly and jaded, comebacks and taunts are part and parcel for your role. Thus, if the players are able to write in good taunts, or pertinent information or jokes, it runs the chance of lowering the DC even further or providing new avenues to explore. Additionally, doubles are either critical successes, or critical failures respectively.

Now, can I get some rolls of 1d100, please? I take the best of the first three. DC 65.

No, not quite. The DC was 65. The goal was to roll OVER it, not under. Any doubles under that would be a critical failure, but if they'd gotten something like a 66, that's a critical success.

diving towards the doctor to push him out of the way. Yeah, he was a piece of shit for pushing something like this on someone like Bruce, but that didn't mean he deserved to get bludgeoned to death by something that was tentatively defined as 'Human' now.

Your body slammed into Connors, and did manage to get him out of the way of this 'Hulk', but it did have the regretful consequence of putting you right in the path of the Banner. You barely got a moment to open your mouth in an attempt to either talk, or scream in terror, more than likely the latter, before a massive green mitt slammed into your chest.

Thankfully, the wall behind you was drywall. Cheap New York construction unions were probably the only thing that spared you from greater injury. It broke easily as pain surged from your ribs, your body propelled through it with the force of whatever Bruce was now. The air was knocked out of your lungs, so thankfully Harry didn't have to hear you scream as your body slammed through the next drywall, into a very familiar office. One filled with creepy crawlies of every stripe. You can begin to regain some measure of clarity, with the roar of something off in the distance, but the sound of crashing glass is more pressing as exhibits began to crash all around you, likely from the shaking of this Hulk's rampage.

Unfortunately, that meant all of their contents were spilling to the floor. You're in far too much pain to try and crawl away from the spiders that begin to fall on you, the sounds of Harry's voice yelling off in the distance seeming so muffled and hard to hear... You can only barely begin to crack your eyes open, and look at the spider beginning to crawl over your hand...

It's all you can do to cry out in pain when the discolored, white creature bites down on your hand, and a tingling of electric sensation ran up your arm. It's enough to get you to jolt upward, beginning to stumble to your feet and shake the insect off, flinging it into the darkness. You immediately regret the decision to move though, as pain grips your abdomen and an ache settles into your bones.

Behind you, the sounds of carnage and destruction are occurring, and you're hardly in any situation to move.

>Go find Harry, and get the hell out of here.
>Start moving your quickest towards the exit. Bruce was going after Connors, not him, so he should be fine.
>Go find Bruce and try to calm him down again. Maybe he won't punch you through two walls again.

It hurts, but your father hits harder than that on one of his bad nights. At least, that's what you're telling yourself as you stumble through the remains of the lab, trying to avoid the critters crawling all around you, escaping their containment. Probably not good, but you're not in the mindset to actually consider much besides the throbbing at your side and the pounding in your head. No, what's really got your attention is the sound of destruction and breaking equipment, getting away from you at this point. It's a true challenge to begin to walk towards it, each step brought forth by pain and the buzzing in your hand where the spider bit you.

Maybe it was poisonous, maybe it would kill you, but Bruce would kill someone if you didn't grab him before he did some real damage. It feels like an eternity, but the reality is likely that it's been a minute as you stumble along, wincing and groaning before you round a corner, following the trail of smashed equipment and walls. It didn't take long to find Bruce, not when he's in a state like this.

Harry's behind him, giving him a very wide berth, mostly because Bruce has Doctor Connors trapped. The scientist had his back to a glass window, terror written on his face, mostly since Bruce was a few yards away, standing in the rubble of a cubicle, his face curled into something less than human. "Ssssmash!" It's a long, hissing word, mangled in his reptilian mouth, but the desire and implication is clear as day.

You need to do something, and quick, before Bruce did something he couldn't take back. Became something he couldn't come back from.

"This isn't you, Bruce! You're the same guy that threw up when Harry ran over a squirrel! Just relax, alright?" The words you sputter out are enough to make you cough, to make your chest feel tight and pained. "It'll be fine! We'll get you back to normal, I promise! But you have to let Connors go. Please..."

Once again, there's a silence that hung in the air, and it's fraught with a new tension as you struggle to hold yourself up. Bruce looks your way, yellow, slit-eyes narrowing, but for the briefest of moments you think there was a sign of recognition. Realization. It's something that bolsters your hope, for the most fleeting of seconds.

Then, a giant green, scaled hand reached out, and grabbed the doctor, quicker than you could see. There's not a whole lot you could have done, really, considering the circumstances. With his other hand, he punched towards the glass, and with a quick leap, both Bruce and Doctor Connors are gone out the window, into the cool night air. No, not Bruce anymore... Something savage, brutal, unwieldy. A Hulk.

Both you and Harry rush to the window, but by the time you get there there you only manage to capture a glimpse of a green figure, jumping from rooftop to rooftop, with a labcoat wearing man in his hands. Wherever the Hulk was going, it wasn't somewhere you could easily follow. All you could do was stand and look out into the city, with all those bright, gleaming lights.

It's just you and Harry standing there for a few moments, dumbfounded from the entire series of events, until he turned his face towards you with the most incredulous expression. "...What the fuck just happened?!"

"Bruce hit puberty, I think." It's hardly the time for jokes, but it makes you feel less likely to pass out. You're about to open your mouth to say something else, but that's right when the alarms began to go off, and your panic level began to rise once more.

"Shit, we gotta get out of here! My dad's gonna flip if he finds out we were here!" Harry exclaimed, beginning to move away from the window and back towards the exit to the labs.

"He's not going to be more concerned about the giant monster that used to be his intern?!" You snipe back, following after him quickly, or as quick as you could. There was immediate relief on your face though, as he slowed down and hefted one of your arms around his neck, helping you walk.

>Success!

Discretion is the better part of valor, and you're not dumb enough to believe that the security guards or even Harry's father would take kindly to such a blatant invasion. Not that any of the destruction was either of your faults', but there was a time and a place to be honest, and there were other occasions where you just needed to run away as soon as possible. You and Harry chose the latter option in that moment, as he half-carried you as quick as possible.

"Wait, we should grab some papers!" You insist, inclining your head towards the wreckage of Connor's office. "Figure out what the hell Bruce took."

With a little grunt, Harry acquiesced and began to head towards that direction as the two of you extremely briefly looked through the broken walls and desks, snatching whatever papers seemed the most apparently useful. There wasn't much time for a detailed inspection, and you were out just as quickly as you entered.

Thankfully, there was a benefit of Harry knowing the building like the back of his hand. As soon as you were out of the research division, he was leading you down the maze-like corridors and hallways once more, back through the staircases this time and disregarding the elevators. Your chest protested, yet your legs walked on regardless. If you had to choose between pain, or having your parents bail you out of jail, the former was vastly preferable. Especially considering what your father might do. Yeah, that wasn't a pleasant thought.

Before long, you were back where this crazy night stared, the rear access door of the Oscorp building, still half-carried by Harry but not quite in as much pain. Steadily, you were being pushed towards where Harry had parked. "Do you need to go to the hospital man...? You look kind of messed up." Oh, is that what he called being punched through some walls and bitten by a spider?

You give Harry an exasperated look, but he's trying and you're surprisingly tired, so you can't really feel the usual venomous snap rising up in your tongue. Instead, you just ease yourself inside of his car as the two of you approached it, offering a shrug as he rounded to the driver's side door. Truthfully, you felt like a hospital stay could be in your better interests, but maintaining the secrecy of what happened that night was a touch more important. In the end, discretion won out.

*"I don't care where I go, just get me a pen and a notepad so I can write down my notes before I forget them."* Your whole body slumped against the seat of his Charger, weaker than usual. *"I wish I had my damn camera, but this'll have to do."*

*"Guess it's back home for you, then. I'll call by the house tomorrow, and we'll...figure something out."*

Yeah, the two of you against the Hulk. It makes it easier if you call it by that name, instead of thinking of it as Bruce. Hurts less that way. The drive back to your home, a brownstone in Brooklyn, is quiet, save for the sounds of the city outside. It's clear that neither of you are in any state to truly chat, not like before. After all, you're lost in thought here, but the reverie is ended as Harry pulled up in front of the Jameson household, and you gingerly stepped outside. Offering a wave to the Osborn, it's the last he sees of you before you disappear inside of your home.

Thankfully, it appears as if your father wasn't home, judging by the lack of alcoholic smell, and the presence of your mother in the living room. Betty Jameson, as opposed to David Jameson, was a complete and utter saint as far as the world was concerned, and how she ended up with a lout like David is truly beyond you. As soon as you came stumbling in, though, her face immediately turned up to your own from the television, shock and surprise written clear across her face.

Yeah, you didn't really think about how you were going to explain this one away...

"J.J.! What happened to you?!" The woman of slight frame, short and with hair nearly as dark as your own, approached quickly, hands meeting your face to cradle your cheeks, looking you over intensely. Truthfully, you should have given more attention to the way you looked, but it's not the first time you've come into the house roughed up a little.

"Oh, just got in a tangle with a guy... Real big slugger." You're not really describing the gravity of the situation accurately, but Betty didn't really need to worry about you getting punched through walls by a mutated Bruce. She'd probably faint.

She tittered in response, shaking her head and sighing. "Did you win at least?"

"Oh, I laid him out. Told him never to come by this way again, unless he wanted a round two." That managed to get a smile from her, even as small as it was, and her hands left your face.

"That's my boy... Now go get cleaned up and get to bed. I love you, but you look like garbage right now." Ah, there it is. You're mother's famed honesty, no matter how biting or scathing it might be. Sometimes, tough love was the kindest. Following your mother's advice is easy though, as you clamber up the steps and into your room, shedding off clothes and collapsing into bed with a groan.

Honestly, you didn't even remember passing out as your face hit the pillow.
----

You're only brought awake when the first rays of light come streaming through the window of your second story bedroom, and it's immediately apparent that something is wrong. Chiefly, the fact that your entire body is covered in sweat, and you feel absurdly hot. God, did you catch a fever or something? Or was it from that dumb spider from the night before? You barely have any time to figure it out though, before you hear your mother's voice calling you from downstairs.

"J.J.! Breakfast!" The grumble in your stomach seems to prioritize the thought of food more than anything else, and slowly your body slipped out of the sheets, pulling on whatever articles of clothing were lying around your room.

It was a messy space, filled with clothes, posters, and all your photography equipment, but it was yours, and that's all that mattered in the end. Though as you walked around, you couldn't shake the feeling of something being decidedly off. Mostly just the way your body felt in that moment.

>Obviously, you just need to wash your face and check on your injuries from the night before. Go to the bathroom.

You need to go to the bathroom and clean off proper, not the lazy way you did last night. Surprisingly, most of the soreness from your body has more or less disappeared, and it's replaced by the oddest ache in your muscles as you walked into your bathroom, small and cramped but with enough space for a sink, toilet, and shower. Then your eyes hit the mirror, and things became immediately obvious to you.

Last time you checked, you weren't as skinny as Bruce or as lean as Harry, but you didn't have quite the level of muscle definition you're displaying now. With a hand pressed to your abdomen, you can feel abs pressing against those exploring digits, far firmer than those that had been present before. It's more than a little distressing, actually, but you're not entirely sure what to do with this information. Your first instinct is to blame it on a sudden growth spurt, to say it's the reason you've grown another two inches, but the reasonable, rational part of your mind knows that's a lie.

Something's happening to you. Something weird. Hopefully, you weren't turning into a mutant or something, because you were pretty sure you wouldn't look good in those goofy tights the X-men wore.

A hand reached out to the faucet, turning the water in the sink on, but when you tugged your hand back it refused to budge. For some reason, those fingers were stuck to the metal, no matter how hard you pull. This was getting silly...

>Relax. There's a calm, rational explanation for all of this, somewhere. Probably.
>Yank your hand back to free it from the faucet. Maybe you weren't pulling hard enough? There's probably just something sticky there.

It takes actual concentration and willpower to force yourself to stop freaking out, and to not immediately go to a gut reaction of yanking your hand back from the faucet. However, once you relax and cool down a bit, it's relatively easy to simply pull your fingers back from the metal, albeit a little slower than you'd like. The sink wasn't the thing that was sticky. It was you, somehow, but you're not entirely sure how to go about finding out how.

Instead, you wash your face and gingerly cut off the water afterwards, trying to take care not to get your hand stuck to the surface again. Then, you locked the door to the bathroom proper, so you could inspect more of yourself without being interrupted.

In a cool, rational world you'd have to assume that you were just hallucinating from the numerous blows you took the night before, and perhaps just from the venom of an unknown spider species. However, such an assumption was entirely at odds with the reality of your world. You lived in a city where not a month ago prior, the Avengers fought off an invasion by Namor at the statue of liberty, and mutant terrorists were the rumor nearly every politician used to fearmonger and gather votes. Normal had been thrown out of the window long before you were born.

Still, there were always clues and ways to find out what was going on. You were a journalist for christ's sake, or an aspiring one at least. There was a story here, with Bruce, with all the experiments going on at Oscorp, and you were dedicated to get to the bottom of it, one way or another.

After breakfast, though. Your mother's omlette's were pretty goddamn delicious.

Fortunately, your father was conspicuously absent from breakfast. Either he'd come in late the previous night, or he hadn't come home at all. Considering his drinking habits, you're willing to assume it's the latter rather than the former. Neither of you seemed too worked up about it, though. He was a proper curmudgeon but an even meaner drunk.

Then, after thanking her for the meal, you retreat back into your room and make sure to lock the door. It's a Saturday morning, and you've got an entire day ahead of you to figure things out. First off, you should-

>Read Doctor Connor's research notes. You're not as genius as Bruce, but there's a good chance you can get the broad strokes of what was in the serum.
>Call Harry. You should check in with him, maybe even tell him what's going on. It could be useful to have someone inside Oscorp, looking for answers while you look outside of it.

The time would come for you to properly explore the ins and outs of whatever changes your body has undergone, but for now you've got more pressing things on your mind. You've got an urgent itch that desperately needs scratched one way or another, and it doesn't take long before you're seated at the small desk in your room, cluttered and cramped and filled with papers. Reports, essays, your own observations, brushed to the side in favor of something new, a gleaming surface of white just waiting to be filled with ink.

So that's what you do. It's feverish, the fervor you take when you write, the zeal you have for a good story. And this one, for better or worse, was shaping up to be a good one. It was questionable whether or not you wished to put in your identity for this story, if only because it might make it more complicated to hide certain aspects of your newfound capabilities, whatever they were. In the end, you're settling for a more vague first draft that doesn't mention Harry, Dr. Connors, Bruce, or yourself by name, but it can easily be edited in the future.

By the time the writing is finished with, it's been two hours. You're not really sure where the time has gone, but you feel like a weight have been released off of your shoulders with writing down everything that's happened so far, the good and the bad together. There was no journalistic integrity if you made yourself out to be more of a hero than you really were. A real hero might have barged in and stopped Bruce from plunging that needle into his arm.

Standing up from the desk and stretching, you suppose it's about time for you to get a move on, and actually begin the testing of your new abilities. It's just a matter of choosing where you to go.

It's time to test the limits of how sticky your hands can be. Gingerly, you went to the clearest, least obstructed wall in your room, nearest to the window, before placing your palm against it. Then your other hand went above it, carefully applying itself to the wall, before you began the process of climbing the wall proper. It's awkward, and it's unwieldy, but eventually you begin to get the hang of it. The movement is slow at the moment, but sped up when your feet make contact with the wall, sticking like adhesive just the same as your hands.

Then, in an instant, it's like something just clicks in your head. One hand is moving in front of the other, one foot edging further along the wall, before the movement of wall-crawling is just as natural as walking, or feels as much. All the while, you're trying very hard to keep a goofy smile off your face a you climb functionally every surface of your room.

Eventually you settle for staying on the ceiling, upside down, your hair unkempt and messy as it falls towards the floor, just like your clothes are threatening to do. If you're going to do this often, chances are a more appropriate outfit would be better. Maybe something with a tighter fit to keep everything on your body.

The next thing you actually notice is your flexibility. You weren't exactly the most nimble or agile guy around before, but the very fact that you're crawling and moving around your room is more or less evidence that something as changed. There's not really room to test it out very much, but you can reliably drop from the ceiling and perform a three point landing with relative ease, barely making a sound in the process.

Granted, these are just the changes you can easily recognize. You could continue to test, but you'd have to likely head outside to really stretch your legs. There was also the matter of trying to figure out what to do about Bruce. As far as you knew, Harry and yourself were really the only ones who knew what had happened with him and Doctor Connors. What did you even do in this situation?

Call the Avengers so they could punch Bruce in the face? Gosh, he was being a right idiot for taking the serum, but he didn't deserve to actually get hurt for being a bit weak. Go to the police? And what, tell them you and Harry were skulking around illegally in a classified lab?

No, this might be the type of thing you'd have to figure out on your own, for better or worse.

>Head outside towards the vacant lot. It's time to see what you can do.
>Read Connors notes. You haven't really given the time they deserve.

Somewhere deep inside you're sort of itching to run out and figure what were the limits of your abilities, but you put the kibosh on that for now. At the very least, maybe you should maybe till it gets a bit dark out, and grab something to obscure your face. That would only make it easier for no one to be able to spot some teenager displaying a laundry list of super powers.

With that in mind, you seat yourself back at your desk and look at the little files that you'd managed to collect from Oscorp before your exit the night before. Hardly a full list of everything that Connors was doing, but you're certainly going to try your best to understand the most basic synopsis of the experiment. Though from what you can garner, the main crux of it was a replication of the super soldier-serum, specifically the one that turned Steve Rogers from a skinny Irish kid into the muscle-bound captain America.

The main issue with the new serum however, was that the building blocks of the serum were more or less lost to the ravages of time. The scientist behind Captain America's transformation had died in an assasination forty years prior, and taken his secrets with him to the grave. Thus, a perfect replication was impossible, but an imitation could be achieved if one switched out certain elements with new scientific research.

As a base, the new serum took advantage of nuclear research in the decades following world war 2, specifically the effect of radiation on living creatures. Gamma radiation was proven to be the most effective for the purposes of his research, but then the issue became finding another component to bolster the Human system against the rigorous radiation, and provide a highly effective basis for explosive muscle growth and regenerative abilities.

As you read, it's like something out of a pulp serial. Using the DNA of a saltwater crocodile, noted for their massive sizes and sheer aggression, with the alterations borne from intense gamma radiation. You're willing to bet that's the reason why the Hulk hardly looked Human, and was immediately so violent, but it's just a hunch.

Furthermore, the new soldier was theorized to require regular infusions of gamma radiation to keep up the transformation, and be instinctively designed towards recognizing sources of it for additional power. Now that was a useful piece of information, considering how it could be used to predict Bruce's next move.

>Item added to inventory:
>Dr. Connor's Notes

So now it's a matter of deciding what to do with his information. Go to higher authorities, or try to track down Bruce yourself? Because Bruce was still in there, regardless of what he looked like. And you had to bring him back.

>TRAINING MONTAGE

>Powers Gained:
>Wall-crawling: As long as you're wearing clothing sheer enough to support it, you've found that you can stick to most surfaces reliably. You haven't exactly had time to test the limits of this power, though, or whether or not it can be grown beyond it.
>Super-Human Agility, Stage One: You've got the balance and equilibrium of an Olympic gymnast now, and your fine motor control is bordering somewhere between the height of Human ability, and somewhere a bit beyond it. At the very least, you'll never trip again in your life.

It's a matter of life or death now for Bruce, that you find him before he hurts anyone seriously, and before anyone hurts him. And for that, you're going to need to be a bit more in the way of learning how to control these new powers. Sure, you've got a bit of boxing training under your belt, but every skill in your arsenal is going to be used when it comes to taking on the Hulk. There's no other option for success.

This time when you leave the house, you make sure to grab your backpack and stow your Polaroid camera inside, along with your Walkman, and head out, saying goodbye to your mother and beginning the trek to the vacant lot. It took a little bit without a car, but it definitely gave you the time to stretch your legs and breathe after everything that'd happened in the last 24 hours. Sometimes, that's all a man needs.

Arriving at the lot, you were pretty comfortable that the chances of you being interrupted were slim to none. It used to be a more booming location when you were a young kid, but the times had changed and the owners had been unwilling to change with them, and thus the fortunes of the drive-in lot had faded. Fortunately, the fenced in area and lack of real presence meant that you could run and jump and leap to your heart's content.

Now, it was time to see what you could really do.

>Sensational Success

>Powers Gained:
>Super-Human Strength, Stage One: Almost overnight, your physical capabilities have improved, at least from what you've observed. You're hitting harder than the average joe, and the limits of what you can pick up have vastly increased. Time will tell whether or not you can continue to push this ability beyond it's current level.

There's something to be said about the simplistic joy that comes from performing a variety of acrobatic movements, jumping over the rusted old cars parked in the lot, climbing over the walls of the projection booth, and even walking up the sheer surface of the movie screen itself. If you were comfortable with your powers before, you're using them with complete and utter ease now. And the mystery of your improved physique is quickly answered by a cursory test with one of the cars.

Grabbing the side of it, with a little bit of exertion you find yourself able to tip it over completely, all by yourself. While you may not be at the level of the Hulk, you're definitely at a far more impressive stage of physicality than you were before, easily over the Human peaks. Only time would tell whether or not it could be improved with training, but your mind boggles at any gym you could reliably find weights to improve how much you could lift. Jane Fonda tapes wouldn't cut it here.

Just to check out the limits, you climb all the way to the top of the projection tower, more than likely safe from any wandering eyes of the pedestrians and bystanders below, wind whipping past your hair as you looked out into the city. People so rarely deigned to look up unless you gave them a reason to do so, from what you've experienced. Though from your high perch in the air, there's something odd that you notice in an alley a ways off.

Three people were in any alley, but there was just a little hunch itching on the back of your mind that there was something awry with the group. It was a dark, out of the way alley. Definitely not the place someone would have an idle chat, if you were being completely honest.

Only fools rushed into a situation they didn't know anything about, and you tried not to be foolish as much as possible. Instead of simply barging in or leaving the area, you instead leaped from the top of the movie screen, landing right about on the edge of a nearby rooftop and rolling to your feet. More and more, you're starting to become a bit fond of these new powers, if you've got to be entirely honest about it. How you ever got around, walking on the ground like some average guy, you're starting to wonder.

Quickly reaching into your backpack, it was child's play to retrieve the camera and begin to creep on the wall above this trio, the camera perched in your hands and prepared to take a photo at a moment's notice while you listened to their conversation. Admittedly, this was far better than trying to sneak up behind people to spy on them.

"Look, look! Mr. Owlsley knows I'm good for the money, doesn't he? You really think I'd skimp on a payment?" The man in question, being pinned between the two other men, was a dark-skinned African American man, wearing a sheepish smile. "I got a job in the works, a big one. I just need a bit more time, yeah? Then we'll hit the Alchemax joint in Queens, and clean it out. All sorts of super-tech, ripe for the picking.

The man looking down at him crossed his arms, grunting at the attempts at placation. "Turk, really? You know damn well that if you don't follow through, the Owl is gonna send Man-bull after you. Do you really want to get beaten to death with one of your own limbs?"

The third, a bald, short figure, nodded at that statement. "Saw him do it to Jerry Wilkins. Shame about that. I really liked his record shop..."

This man, this Turk as he was called, shook his head, still smiling even as sweat beaded on his temple. "Look! I can promise you tonight, we'll hit the place! Me, Looter, Kangaroo! The crew. He'll have his money by tomorrow morning."

"For your sake Turk, I hope so." With that, the two men began to turn away from the Turk to leave, and it was probably your cue to skedaddle as well. But you did happen to walk into a shake-down in progress, and could still reasonably get pictures of everyone involved, if you were quick about it.

>Investigative Journalism: The city is teeming with crime, rogue elements, supervillains and freaks running amok, menaces one and all. You want to show the world the truth, to dig deep and muckrake. You're becoming damn good at it, too. -10 to skill roll DCs surrounding journalism.

A more rational person less inclined to a singularly dogged pursuit of truth and justice would have been less inclined towards attempting to capture photos of these gentlemen. You however, are not one of these people, and the itch on your trigger finger is intense to say the least. Besides, if you're going to be a real muckraker here, you're going to have to be able to weather any risk to your journalistic integrity.

Which is why you barely blink when there's the telltale snap of your camera. It's enough to garner the attention of all three of the men, their heads quickly snapping up to meet your own gaze. There's little real fear about your identity being found out in the blue tracksuit you're wearing, with a red baseball cap on your head, but there's a touch more concern when as the bald man reached into his coat and began to pull out a gun.

Then there's this itch, this dangerous fuzz of awareness in front of you, telling you to move, leave, escape. Decidedly something new, and not connected with any of your other powers.

It's not easy being John Jonah Jameson. Sometimes, you have a great day, like getting to hit on Gwen Stacy during the week. That was a good day. Then you had days like yesterday, where you were punched through two walls by a monstrosity that used to be your best friend. Those days were harder, and it felt like they were going to be coming a lot more often than not, especially as this thug immediately drew a gun on you.

You saw his finger on the trigger, but you don't really remember even thinking of moving. It was like your body acted on it's own, leaping off of the third story wall, flipping through the air and landing in front of the bald man with ease. If this was like to act at the speed of thought, color yourself a fan.

He only had the briefest of moments to regret his decision, trying to angle the gun back down to your current level, eyes wide in a mixture of fear and surprise. It was the only real chance he got to regret his decision before your fist slammed upwards in an uppercut, rocketing into his jaw with far more force than you might have intended at first. It was impossible to hide the surprise off your face as your punch lifted him into the air, a few teeth knocked loose from the blow as his body rose for a few more inches off the ground, landing in a nearby pile of garbage.

At least he had something to soften his fall, right?

It's pretty clear from the most cursory glance that the bald man was out, but now you're facing down his friend, seemingly coming in swinging with a set of brass knuckles. That familiar sense of danger rose in your body, hair raising from the threat. Beside you, Turk didn't seem to be doing anything besides watching the fight with a shocked expression, backing away from you slowly.

We should probably let Harry in on our secret sooner rather than later, before the Green Goblin starts being a thing. As someone mentioned earlier in the thread, we're not exactly a science expert, so he could be our tech guy. He seems like the kind of guy to be excited to have a superhero friend, and since he's been our bestie our whole life, I'm sure he'll keep our secret.
Also QM, based on the names that have come up, I'm assuming you've ported modern-day Spiderman characters into the 80s?

>Sensational Success

Let it never be said that you didn't pay any attention during boxing class. You may not have have had a chance to really display for the full breadth of your knowledge before, but it's more than a little thrilling to have a chance to do so now. You square your shoulders and raise your hands in a defensive position in front of your face as the thug's hand came rocking in from the side. No point in blocking a blow though, when you could dodge it entirely instead.

"You've got some piss poor form, fella! Lemme give you a lesson!" Your mother always said your mouth was always your biggest problem, but it wouldn't be your downfall today.

Your fist jabbed forward through the air, not possessing as much strength and force as was put behind the uppercut that laid out the bald man, but still plenty powerful. When your knuckles made contact with his diaphragm, the sputtering burst of air and bulging of his eyes made it clear the strike hit true. Stumbling back a few steps, he was coughing and on his hands and knees, face wracked with pain and definitely not able to keep on his feet.

For better or worse, you intervened in whatever was going on here, and won your first real fight. Turning to Turk, you made sure to incline your head downwards, trying your best to hide your face and features. If this was going to continue, you needed to get a real mask, and maybe a costume proper, as much as the idea irks you. Turk immediately raised his hands up, still backing away in fear.

"H-Hey, look, did Hammerhead send you? Tombstone? I've got their cash, honest! I'm just a little behind on the payments..." How many super-criminals and slumlords did this guy owe money to?!

>"The alchemax job. Talk." You're a touch more interested in this heist he was apparently planning, and his two partners in crime.
>"You're an associate of The Owl? What's he doing in Brooklyn?" To the best of your knowledge, he was connected to the Maggia, and they stayed away mostly so they didn't have to contend with the mysterious Kingpin.

"The alchemax job. Talk." You're a touch more interested in this heist he was apparently planning, and his two partners in crime, first and foremost.

At the mention of it, Turk's face grew sheepish once more, sighing as he leaned back against the wall. "C'mon, man, I'm just out in these streets tryin' to make a living. How else am I supposed to pay these people back?!"

"Sounds like a personal problem. Heard McDonald's is hiring, though." There were always legitimate options to making a living out there, regardless of what anyone said. "Back to the job, and your buddies, before my knuckles get too antsy."

"Okay, okay! I hooked up with this cat named Looter, weird guy, uses a bunch of super science and claims to be powered by 'meteor gas', whatever the hell that means." Meteor gas? Really? Were supervillains that desperate nowadays to turn to such lame sources? "Kangaroo's just a crazy aussie. He might be augmented or some shit, but all I know is that he jumps real good."

"...This was the crack team you assembled to hit the lab? Real A-listers, there..."

"Fuck you, man! Hustlin' these streets is hard. We was gonna hit em' at shift change, about midnight." That's useful information. You were planning on trying to go after Bruce, but you're getting the distinct feeling that there's a league of difference between the Hulk, and these wannabes running around in costume. However, they might make good practice, and a scoop was a scoop.

"What about the Owl? What's he doing in Brooklyn? That's a sizable scoop, if only because as far as you knew, the Kingpin ruled that territory.

At your next question, Turk shrugged. "The Owl's been making moves, gatherings his forces, but damn, everyone tangentially related to the maggia is doin' the damn same. Us bit players just try to stay out of it." The idea of underworld powers consolidating their forces and resources is a little distressing. In New York, turf wars took on a whole new meaning when half the bosses of all these gangs and families were superpowered crooks. Combine that with the thugs in Kingpin's employ, whoever he was, and it was a dangerous combination.

If it's going to spoil over into your neighborhood, you'd prefer to cut it out before it even began, taking a step closer to really put the heat on Turk. Thankfully, that extra inch or two of growth and the muscle you've put on recently makes the display far more intimidating. Or maybe it was the fact that you just put the beat-down on those other two goons in under thirty seconds. Probably a mix of the two.

"Spread the word, alright? Anyone that comes around here is cruising for a bruising." You're not an Avenger, or an X-men, or a member of the Fantastic Four. You're not going to save the world or go on cosmic adventures. But if you can't protect just this one neighborhood, how can you save anyone?

Turk nodded quickly, gulping as he heard your tone. "So what do you want me to tell them? Who's making this order, stakin' out this territory?"

That was a pretty good question. Did you really want to take a name? Sure, you might have had superpowers, but taking a name felt like taking a pretty big, concrete foot in this world. Then again, your friend was a giant green monster, so maybe you were already pretty involved in it.

"Tell them..."

This isn't a step that you're fully prepared to take quite yet, being a full-fledged hero and everything. You just want to write your stories, get paid, and maybe get a date to the prom this year. If you can save some lives and protect your community along the way, that's just a bonus. Truthfully, the idea of wearing a mask like some of these ponces is just absurd, and if it means you have to take a silly name like Looter or Kangaroo, maybe it's for the best you didn't yet.

There's probably arguments to be made for hiding your identity, but if you're going to be a hero and a journalist, a certain amount of honesty and accountability should be held for you. How can anyone be accountable if they're hiding behind a mask?

"Just tell em' not to come here, or they'll have to tangle with a concerned citizen." At the end of the day, that's all you are. One guy, trying to keep his neighborhood safe. With that, you turned to leave, leaping from one wall to another, until you're nearly out of sight of Turk. "And get a job, you beatnik!" Nearly as bad as the goddamn commies.

With that, you booked it away from the scene of the crime, if one could call it that. Leaping from rooftop to rooftop, it was a shame your mobility wasn't quite as tip-top as you would have liked. Honestly, there had to be a faster way of getting around besides running everywhere, but for now the exercise was welcome as you considered your next move.

There was the option of hunting this Hulk, which you knew would be attracted to any source of gamma radiation as a way to prolong it's existence and transformation, if not make itself stronger in the long run. The longer you waited, the more time it had to grow in power or potentially hurt someone. What was the question was whether or not you could take him on at the moment...

Then there was the issue of Harry. You didn't want to keep your powers from him, especially if it'd make you the worst type of hypocrite unwilling to practice what you preach.

And lastly, there was the matter of getting the scoop on this Alchemax heist. The chance to stop it could be just as enticing, especially if you got a chance to interview the supervillains afterwards. So many options, so little time.

>Talk to Harry. He's probably been waiting for you to call him for awhile now.

The trip back to your home was quicker than getting to the vacant lot, if only because you'd been less shy about taking the more scenic rooftop route. Turns out if you didn't have to navigate the streets and sidewalks, you could cross Brooklyn in record time. You did have to slow down a little as you hit the brownstones though, descending back to the sidewalk proper as you walked the rest of the distance back to your home.

You needed to call Harry. It was the middle of the afternoon, and you'd been putting it off in favor of writing, reading, and exploring your powers, but there was a certain point where you had to face your friend and make a plan. Or possibly fill him in on the suite of powers you'd gotten. That was a decision you needed to make, probably one of consequence considering how sketchy that lab was.

When you reach the phone it only takes a couple of rings for Harry to pick up. "J.J.? That you?"

"Were you expecting my mom to be calling you?"

"What?! No man, I was worried about you! How are you feeling?"

"Pretty good, considering what happened yesterday. Though, I was hoping you could come over? Probably ain't the best to talk about this over the phone. Got some sensitive info about the serum Bruce took." Potentially, among other things to discuss...

"Gotcha. From those papers we snatched beforehand? I'll be over in a bit." With that Harry hung up, leaving you free to navigate your way back upstairs and to update your notes. After all, you had a potential turf war to get down, a new photo to add to your collection, and your report wasn't going to write itself. It was enough to idle away the time until you heard a knock at the door.

Trudging down your steps quickly, you opened the door to find a very nervous looking Harry waiting outside, quickly ushered inside. "You're looking...way better than expect, J.J. I guess Bruce didn't actually hit you that hard, huh?"

"Of course, it's Bruce. He always pulls his punches." You neglect to tell him that the only reason you're not more injured is because of the changes to your body from a genetically engineered spider.

"So what did you read in Doctor Connors' notes? Apparently after we split yesterday, no one's seen him or Bruce..." There was a look of guilt on Harry's face, though you assume it's probably because he's the one that set up the internship for Bruce. Not that Banner couldn't have earned it on his own, but it helps to have an Osborn to grease the wheels sometimes.

With that, you fill him in on what you learned about the research notes, chiefly the base of the experiment being a saltwater crocodile, and the gamma radiation involved in the process. For Harry, he took it relatively well all things considered, even if the look on his face was a worried mirror of his usual happy-go-lucky self.

"So you're saying the Hulk is going to head after a new source of gamma radiation eventually...?" He asked, scratching his chin. "I...might actually know where Bruce might go."

"Where?"

"Roxxon was building a reactor in Queens, a small one, mind you. It was meant to be a big-time science project, according to dad. I remember because he immediately retooled or hired a bunch of scientists so we could begin making one." Harry sighed afterwards, running his hand through his weird, wavy hair. Really, how did it do that? "We never finished, though."

That'd be a good location to wait for Bruce, then. Though, there was the matter of another lingering topic...

>"Harry...I've got to tell you something." He's your best friend, and you two got into this mess together. He deserves to know about your powers.

Thank god your mother was out on some errand, since it made the demonstration a lot easier.

Standing up from your seat on the couch, you simply continued walking into the wall...and then up the wall, stopping once you were entirely upside down. The shifting of your tracksuit was somewhat distracting, but the look of shock on Harry's was a touch more pressing. "...What?!" He shot up from his seat, coming face to face with you in your upside down position, hands settled on his head. You could recognize the look in his face, though, as the gears turned in his head.

"You got exposed to something inside of the lab too, didn't you?"

"A spider, I think. Woke up this morning in a sweat, sticking to things and waaaaay more flexible than I'd been before." You begin to explain, even if you were still trying to understand it yourself. "I'm pretty sure I'm stronger than I was before, and I've kind of got this...sense, if someone's trying to hurt me."

"And you're fine? You're not going crazy or anything? Growing spider fangs? Extra limbs?" Harry asked, still visibly concerned as he looked you over. "You got bit by a spider in the middle of a classified lab, J.J. Literally anything can happen to you."

"To the best of my knowledge I'm fine. Actually, if anything, this is good. We can use this to help Bruce, can't we?" All in all, this definitely changed some of your options in life. You could get places a normal journalist could only dream of.

"True..." Harry moved back over to the couch, slumping down against it. "On the bright side, I guess you really became a real Shutterbug, huh?"

"Still, if we're going after Bruce, we probably need a bit more in the way of muscle. Or a gadget or two, if you think you can get us back into Oscorp." After what happened the previous night, you were pretty sure your chances of getting into the research division were slim to none, truthfully.

"Ha... Funny you mention that, actually." Reaching into his coat, the auburn haired teen produced an odd little device out of his pocket, shaped almost something like a glove. "When you were punched through a wall and the Hulk chased Connors, I got a little freaked out and I grabbed anything I thought might help. Didn't get to use this before you showed back up, though."

"What is it?"

"Experimental mobility device, I think. Probably meant for soldiers in dense urban environments, but if you're half as nimble as you say you are, it'd work wonders for you." As a demonstration of his own, he'd press the trigger and a string of black webbing would shoot out, attaching to the wall impressively. He's not entirely wrong about it fitting you, and you can imagine the possibilities, but if Harry was going to be walking into this, you might prefer he had something to help him out on his own.

>"You should take that, Harry. I'm the one with all the awesome superpowers."
>"I mean, if you think it would fit..." It'd probably make your navigation and mobility all the more impressive, using something like that.
>"We should go after Bruce, tonight. Try to ambush him at the Roxxon facility, maybe?" You smell a story coming on.
>"I don't think we're ready to fight the Hulk yet. We should wait." The two of you were a good start, but not good enough to rumble with that beast.

"If you think it would fit..." It's impossible for you not to be at least a little excited at the prospect of substantially increasing your mobility. With a gadget like that, you could swing around and reach heights that normally would have taken you awhile before.

"J.J., I don't have powers. I'll be there to help with Bruce any way I can, but I'm not going to be able to go into the mix with you two if it comes down to a fight." It's a little unusual to hear Harry be so frank with the truth, but still refreshing. He's speaking the truth, though. You're the one with the strength and the agility and the danger sense.

"Guess we're going after him tonight, then?"

"No time like the present. It'll be difficult, but if we don't take care of him now, he could become a serious issue, couldn't he?" Harry's right. It was like a case of bad breath. The longer you waited to handle it, the worse it got.

"Then let's get moving." It was nice that you were at the age where your parents more or less were fine with you staying out late, provided you left a note where you were going, and didn't commit any crimes while you were out. Hopefully, you wouldn't have the break the second rule as the two of you rushed out the door to Harry's car. Roxxon was all the way over in Queens, and you guys had a bit of a drive to get there through the congested New York traffic.

It gives you time to take stock of everything, make sure your Polaroid is locked and ready to take snapshots of whatever notable is happening. The outfit you've chosen for this venture out is basically the same before, considering you don't really have much in the way of clothing that wouldn't interfere or hinder with your wall-climbing. In the same blue tracksuit, sneakers, and red cap, the only new additions you've added is a red scarf to cover the bottom half of your face and the web-shooter. You may have been a journalist, but you were still on the fence about the whole 'open identity' thing.

Though as the two of you approached the facility, it was evident that the tall, intimidating building was definitely going to be a hard target to protect. Then again, if the Hulk followed his usual tactics, chances were you'd hear him coming once the attack started.

>You should warn the staff about an imminent assault. Maybe it would give them time to call...someone? This didn't feel like an issue big enough for the Avengers, though.

"This Hulk bozo is a goddamn menace to upstanding members of society."

Also, J.J. needs to find out how much web-tar the shooter has before it's empty. That's going to need to be rationed - I doubt that Harry's got pockets full of reloads. Until he gets a steady supply, that's an emergency tool, not something to be spammed like Peter-Spidey.

You know under normal circumstances, Bruce would never hurt a fly, even if he had a fairly sharp tongue at times. This was not normal normal circumstances, though, and the Hulk was more feral and monstrous than Banner could ever be. Even if you didn't know how smart it was, even if it was somehow watching, you knew you had a moral compunction to make sure as few honest working citizens weren't caught up in this as possible. It was the least you could do after failing to calm him down at the Oscorp lab, or even stop him from taking the serum.

New York was littered with payphones, so it wasn't difficult to find one and begin to ring up the number for the Roxxon building in Queens. After a few rings, a chipper, female voice answered on the other end of the line. "Roxxon Energy Solutions, Queens branch! This is Angelica speaking, how may I help you today?"

You've never been one to beat around the bush of a subject and you're not intending on starting now. "Clear the building, top to bottom, quick. You've got half a ton of lizard muscle and anger coming your way, probably as soon as the sun dips down." Bruce was always a smart one, and if the Hulk got half his intelligence, it was a reasonable assumption that'd make logical plans. Well, as logic as a monstrosity born of gamma radiation and crocodile DNA could be.

"...Excuse me, sir?"

"Did I stutter? You've got a bonafide supervillain coming your way, and they're not going to stop until they get at the little gamma reactor you've got inside. Clear that building, and quick!" Droning on and on with the woman wasn't going to solve anything, so you simply hang up the phone after that. Either she'd believe you about the threat or she wouldn't, but you did your civic duty warning her about it.

Stepping out of the booth, you're quickly greeted by Harry again, looking anxious. "You think they believed you?""

"It's New York, Harry. Either they took me completely at my word, or thought I was a nut. It's a crapshoot which they picked." Hopefully, they had the sense to believe you, as the two of you took up a perch on a street corner within sight of the building, staking out the place. Eventually, there was a steady stream of people filing out of the building, an amount to be expected from an energy corporation on a Saturday night. Apparently, your message got through to the right people.

As the minutes idled away into hours, and the sun dropped lower and lower into the sky, your attention would begin to turn towards the web-shooter that Harry had given you. While you're not the most talented with technology, with Harry's help you more or less suss out that you've got about twelve shots of the thing before it'll need to be reloaded with more fluid. As to where you'll get your reloads, that's a problem for another time.

[1/2]
>>
>>3192846

Harry could probably figure out a way to engineer more of the fluid, or a substitute of some kind, if you end up growing attached to the shooter. There's also the novel idea of replacing the ammo with something else, but again, you're just an idea man, not an engineer. That's better left to eggheads like your friends.

"...Did you hear that?" Harry asked, interrupting you from your internal train of thought.

"What? I didn't hear anythi-" You started to respond, before a sound erupted from the night. One bestial and feral and full of rage, rocking through the streets. Pedestrians and bystanders, what few there were in this section of Queens, all stopped in their tracks, looking around for the source. Of course, you knew exactly what it was considering you heard it for the first time the night previous.

"The Hulk is coming." There's more than a little fear edging Harry's voice, but he's putting on a brave face.

Rushing in wasn't a smart plan in the slightest, and nor was exposing yourself when you didn't know where the Hulk was coming from was just plain dumb. "Sit tight, Harry. We still don't know where he's coming from."

"Easier said than done..." He still quieted down though, reclining back against the driver's seat.

A few moments of silence would pass before another roar erupted forth, but it was difficult to tell where the source was coming from. The people in the street were also starting to get visibly scared, many of them beginning to clear out of the general area. The only superpower most New Yorkers ever got was a sixth sense to stay out of the way of any given super-fight. Damage Control could fix buildings and property in a jiffy, but last time you checked they didn't have a health insurance policy for getting crushed by rubble.

Then, the rumbling started from below, shaking cars and concrete as it rapidly passed underneath. Truthfully, you didn't know quite what it-

"Sonuva' bitch!" You yelled, the realization coming a little too late for your liking as you hurriedly began to hop out of the car, with a confused Harry looking your way.

"What is it?!

"The Hulk isn't going above or on the streets, he's below them! It's in the sewers!" There's some poetic irony there to be had, somewhere, about crocodile-men in the sewers, but this wasn't the time or the place to comment on it.

With your strength and adhesive fingers, it's child's play to wrench off the nearest manhole cover and expose the entrance to the sewers, with Harry looking at you nearby. "What am I supposed to do?! Are you even positive he's down there?"

"I know he's down here, he smells worse than the sewage!" You shout back, already climbing down inside the hole. "Figure it out, Harry! You're the second smartest person I know!" His protests at your comments are muffled once you entered the sewer proper, looking around the poorly lit space. It's impossible not to hear the sound of something massive moving around in the dark, and it doesn't take a real genius to figure out what it might be.

By the grace of your powers, you're not obliged to step around in the sewage or muddy water, instead running on the walls as you chased after the source of the noise. The Hulk may have been fast, but you were pretty sure you were faster now, and your vision wasn't quite as impaired in the dark as you would have thought. Really, the only issue was how meandering and winding the tunnels seemed, and you were positive that you'd lost the beast until you rounded a corner and saw it, staring intently at a flat wall.

If it's noticed you coming up behind it, the Hulk hasn't made any sign or gesture, beyond the swaying of it's tail. No, instead it was just staring at that wall, hunched over. Slowly, you began to creep closer on the ceiling, all four limbs connected to the brickwork until suddenly the Hulk exploded into motion. Burly arms and clawed fingers began tearing into the brickwork, and you'd like to make the assumption that it would break inside before long. Why is a whole other thing entirely, unless...

...This sewer was connected to the Roxxon building. Oof. If the Hulk had been using the sewers to navigate the city, chances were no one would have seen him. Maybe besides some hobos, but who really listened to the street crazies if they claimed to see an alligator man?

It's your first instinct to take a picture, because who would believe something like this if they read it in a story? Well, probably a ton of people, but a picture was worth a thousand words. However, you're willing to bet that something like that might spook the Hulk, especially with how loud the snap of the Polaroid was. You really needed to get a camera that wasn't so loud one of these days, but first you'd have to get a raise from your boss at the Bugle. Easier said than done.

"Funny meeting you down here, Bruce." The words that spill out of your mouth, slightly muffled by the scarf you're wearing, are loud and clear enough to capture the thing's attention immediately. It rounded immediately, snarling and turning those two yellow eyes at you, dropped low in a position and probably ready to spring forward at you at a moment's notice. "Hard to believe you'd be caught dead in a gross place like this. Biggest neat freak I know in the world..."

"You're still in there, aren't you? Fighting this thing?" You crawl slightly closer, but from the immediate growl that came from the Hulk, you decide not to. Instead, what happens is a touch more shocking. The Hulk talks in a gravelly, hissing voice, deeper than Banner's could ever be.

"Sssss'not a friend of Banner. Puny J.J. and Harry, they make fun of Banner!" It's almost like it's talking itself up into a frenzy, getting angrier and angrier. "Becausssse Banner isssss weak, and ssssssmall! But Hulk isssssn't!"

"Hulk will never be punky, weak Banner again!"

"Even if it means you'll never see Betty Ross again?" In an instant, another hiss came from the Hulk, eyes averted from your own. It's somewhat of a low blow, to bring up Bruce's crush, but you're trying to bring forth your best friend right now and save his life. "Even if it means you can't take her to the prom, or become that bigshot scientist? Rub it in your dad's face? Go out drinking with me and Harry again?"

"Bruce, this isn't you. You know that, right? You know we're here for you, me and Harry. But..." This emotional stuff was never your forte. Never what you were really good at, honestly. But for Banner, you'll try. "Like this, you're a real menace, Bruce. You're going to hurt someone, if you haven't already." The fact that Doctor Connors is no where to be seen is somewhat distressing, but you neglect to bring it up. One thing at a time, J.J.

>Spectacular Success

"You want to know why our group works so well?" It's like your words have a visible, physical reaction on the Hulk, as it hissed and growled, thrashing in the muck of the sewers, eyes flashing between a feral yellow-ish green and the familiar brown of Banner. "Because we're a team, through thick and thin, but that doesn't mean a damn thing if we're not all together, Bruce." There's a wrenching yowl that ripped from it's throat as it weakly leaped, barely making it into the air and not even triggering your danger sense. Whatever was happening, it was you doing it, your words. So you continued.

"You say Banner is weak. I say he's the strongest guy I've ever known. He's so stubborn and moral and self-righteous that it makes me want to puke, but he's a good man. Maybe better than I'll ever be." You know your flaws, most of the time. It's just a matter of either living with them, or finding people that can push you on the right track when you're being an idiot. For you, that's Bruce and Harry.

"Sssstop it! There's almost something weak and pleading in the Hulk's voice, but you've never shied away from saying what needs to be said.

"You're here because at the end of the day, he's Human, and he makes mistakes. Because no one's a hero every day of the week."

As you finish talking, the transformation that takes place in front of you is extreme to say the least, as flesh contorted and rended, the tail growing and shrinking into the mass of muscle that was becoming smaller by the second. Paler. until finally, the body that was slumped against the wall wasn't that of the intimidating, reptilian Hulk, ready to smash something or another. It's Bruce, his breathing shallow and slow, barely dressed in the tattered remains of his pants, glasses long gone.

In an instant, you've dropped off the ceiling and got him cradled in your arms, but it's pretty clear that he's out like a light. Whatever transforming into the Hulk took out of it, he wasn't going to be waking up anytime soon. Probably better you get him out of a filthy sewer, actually.

It's a little awkward to hoist him over your shoulder, but it's easy to carry him and eventually find a manhole in the darkness, pushing it up and exiting into the fresh air of the city above. There's sirens, somewhere off in the distance, but you're really intending on sticking around to explain what just happened down there. It's a bit of a awkward story, to say the least. Instead, you quickly navigate around to find wherever Harry had parked.

When Harry saw the two of you, his face immediately lit up and he hopped out of the car, running to meet you in the street. "Holy shit, are you alright? Is Bruce alright?"

"He's fine. Not a scratch on him, as far as I can tell." It's true, though. Bruce looked pretty fine, beyond the whole passed out thing. You weren't a doctor by any stretch of the imagination, so it was up in the air whether or not being the Hulk had any lasting effects on Bruce.

"And Connors?"

"Gone. I didn't exactly have time to grill the Hulk on everything that had been going on." It might be a little cold of you, but the good Doctor wasn't your top priority. The man had pushed the super soldier serum on Bruce, played on his weaknesses, and abused his position of power. That made him just as bad as any supervillain in your book.

"One thing at a time I guess? What do we do now?" Harry asked, opening the back door to his car as you gently began to rest Bruce inside, buckling him up for good measure.

"Easy. We..."

Who knows what shit they'd force on him at the hospital? Bozos in labcoats caused this problem in the first place. Just make up a bullshit lie that sounds like you're covering for a drunken bender and let her fill in the blanks.

"...take him home." His aunt Susan was notoriously watchful of Bruce, and sometimes she didn't approve the most of her association with you two. Taking him to the hospital wasn't much of a good idea in your mind, seeing as bozos in white coats were the ones that started all this in the first place. Taking him to S.H.I.E.L.D., that glorified waste of tax dollars? Even worse in your eyes, seeing as their track record for containing criminals at the Raft was even worse.

No, the best thing you could do for Bruce was take him home, and it was clear on Harry's face that he agreed. "What are we going to tell her?"

"That Bruce couldn't handle his liquor and he's been sick as a dog since." It's not going to win you any favors with Susan, but you're just going to have to live with that. Hopping into the passenger's side of the Charger, Harry slipped into the driver's side, and the three of you were speeding off into the New York night in a flash. Just in time to narrowly avoid the sirens, whoever they were.

The drive was quiet, somber, but punctuated by a sincere relief from you and Harry. Bruce stayed asleep the entire time, breathing lightly in the back but otherwise fine. As the three of you pulled up to the home of the Banners, you and Harry both took up the reigns of carrying Bruce inside, having cleaned him up the best you could, one arm wrapped around each of your shoulders as the two of you knocked and waited for an answer.

When the door opened, the face that answered was surprisingly youthful, but to your knowledge Susan Banner never had any children, and Bruce was just her nephew. What happened to Bruce's father and mother was unknown, and you never asked. The subject seemed...touchy, to say the least. She still looked shocked and surprised to see him between the two of you, still pretty loose and limp. "Bruce!" Her expression was all contorted in anger and confusion and fear as she looked at him, and then back to you two. "What happened to him?! I haven't seen him yesterday morning! Do you know how worried I was?"

It continues on like that for awhile, until Harry is the one to interrupt her words. "Hey, hey, hey! I'm sorry, really, but Bruce just couldn't handle his liquor. He's been laid out, and honestly..." Harry leaned in, with a sheepish smile on his face. "I think he may have pooped himself." With that, she'd wrinkle her nose, recognizing the smell.

"...Just bring him in and lay him on the couch. I'll handle the rest."

"Thanks Miss Banner." You chime in, hoping she doesn't recognize how silly you look in your get-up.

"Don't thank me yet. I'm still debating whether or not I should call your parents."

Well, you can't win em' all.

I think I know what universe we're in, it's a marvel/DC crossover with common villains and heroes mixed together. Bruce, while being the Hulk, is also The Lizard and Killer Croc combined
>>

I mean, you're wrong on the Dc and Marvel being mixed together, but correct with the Lizard bit.
>>
>>3193576
In the end she decided against it, in favor of a very strongly worded warning that if Bruce was ever absent for this long again without so much as a note or a phone call, she was calling the cops. That much you could accept, really, as long as she didn't involve either of your parents. Your father could be...difficult, at the best of times. And you knew Harry always craved his father's approval, even if you didn't dare say it to his face.

When it's all over and done with, the two of you were just sitting in his car. To be frank, the rollercoaster your life has become still hasn't really hit you proper. It's Harry who speaks next, starting up the car and encapsulating all your feelings in one succinct sentence. "What now?""

Oh snap! That was tonight?
>>
>"Now, we get Mickey D's. I'm starving." Turns out saving a life is tiring work.

A few minutes later, the two of you were in the middle of a McDonald's, taking bites out big macs relishing in the taste of grilled, American beef. Just like god intended. After all of the exertion of the day, the platter of food in front of you is nothing short of a welcome relief. You're stuffing a french fry in your mouth when Harry interrupts the meal, asking a question that had certainly come up again in your mind.

"What if Bruce transforms again?" It's a fair question, one neither of you don't know the answer to. The triggers for his transformation were still up in the air, but if it could be controlled and harnessed in a proper way... You could see a lot of uses for the Hulk.

"Then we'll calm him down again. As usual, when Bruce is being an asshat, we'll be around to set him straight." That managed to get a smile from Harry, and he nodded at the sentiment.

"You've got that right. Guess we'll do the same for you, if your head gets too big with all these superpowers you've got now..." Taking a sip of his drink, his next question was a little more hitting for you. "Speaking of your powers, what do you even want to do with them? Be a hero? Be a journalist? Do you even have a name settled yet?"

In your heart, you're not really sure what you want to do. Telling the truth, being a hard-hitting journalist, and showing the ills of society that no one else wants to see? That's the type of life that interests you. But at the same time, the exhilaration of using your powers, of fighting, of doing actual, tangible good? It was starting to grow on you, that much was for sure.

"I..."

>"...Don't know what I want. Not yet." Give it some time in this new, weird life you've got, and you're sure you'll think of something to do.
>"...I want to be a superhero, proper." There's something to be said about doing it right, though. Setting a moral example.
>"...Want to keep my identity hidden." Harry, your mother, everyone you cared about didn't have your capabilities. They couldn't protect themselves.

Looking around the room, you half expected to see Turk working behind one of the registers. Wait, wasn't Turk-?

"Shit!"" You sat up suddenly, panic written on your face.

"What is it now?!" Harry exclaimed, looking more confused than scared.

"I want to be a superhero, proper. But that doesn't mean I can't be a damn good journalist too." You can write stories under a pseudonym or hell even under your superhero name if you ever get one. Besides, who'd ever expect a sass mouthed' kid from Brooklyn like you to be a superhero journalist? "But I need your help, Harry. Bruce too, whenever he's up to snuff again."

"Us? Really?" Harry tried to sound surprised, but he was too busy sounding flattered.

"You've got money and connections that me and Bruce could only ever dream of. Banner's the brains of our operation, obviously. Together, we'd make one helluva team." Is it technically a super-team if only two-thirds had powers? Hell, they technically called Tony Stark a superhero, and his only ability was having millions of dollars at his disposal.

You're not sure what you'd be called as a group, but that's stuff to hash out in the future. "...Damnit, I guess I've got to join, don't I? Who knows what trouble you two would get into without me?"

It doesn't take you long to prove him right with your little outburst, before an almost excited grin appeared on your face from his last question, of what was going on.

"Put down your burger, Harry! We've got a scoop to catch."

"Right now? Really? Dude, this was a really good-" You're barely listening to his protests as you hook an arm into his, half dragging him out of the McDonald's and back out to his car. After his meager attempts at stopping you, once again he's driving you into the fray. After all, you had a robbery to stop, and a scoop to collect.

It's getting to be pretty late, though. Dangerously close to the time Turk told you the robbery was going down.

It takes a bit of driving, but the traffic this late in New York is mercifully slightly lighter than if you'd been rushing in the afternoon, or the middle of the day. The only real issue is the tight streets, but even those opened up once you began to reach closer to the sprawling Alchemax facility. From what you understand of the building, it'd been around since the Vietnam war as a supplier of various chemicals for the war effort, but that was basically the brunt of what you knew. However, if it had been developing super-science, it was understandable that they'd been pretty quiet about it. Supervillains and criminals were always knocking over labs like that, trying to get powers and equipment.

With a ray-gun, any thug could just up and call themselves a villain, even if they posed the most minor of threats to a hero. Then again, the reverse was probably true of superheroes. You've heard of plenty that were plenty weak-sauce compared to the big leagues. Oh god, where you a small-time bit player? You hoped not...

And as you and Harry pulled up to the facility, you got the feeling that you'd actually be able to test out whether or not you were. There was smoke rising from one of the sub-buildings, and the sound of gunfire and explosions could be heard within.

Harry looked at you with a shy grin, nodding his head towards the sounds of chaos. "Well? Go out there and do your thing."

You return the grin as you quickly exit the car, sprinting up to the flattened portion of the gate. All around you is the signs of their attack, even if you've never really seen their powers or abilities in action. Scorch marks, small fires, and broken debris of battle. There's even a knocked out security guard, slumped against a wall. He looked alive, if a little battered and bruised, and covered in some form of bluish-white substance, sticking him against the surface.

Beside him was an entrance into the building, a collapsed wall that appeared to lead into a well-lit hallway. You're willing to assume if the terrible two entered anywhere, they entered there.

You've got your camera out almost instinctively, taking a picture of the unconscious man glued against the wall in a big glob of whatever that was, also taking another snapshot of the damage caused by these two goons. It wasn't horrific, but impressive for what was supposed be two street-level thugs You kept that in mind as you raced into the building, keeping alert for any injured while also taking pictures when the moment seemed right.

It didn't take long for you to find another duo of security guards, unconscious and glued to the wall in that same paste, but again they didn't seem in need of urgent medical care. Instead, you ran onward in favor of discovering exactly where Looter and Kangaroo had gone off to. With your speed, it didn't take long to run them down.

The first you saw was a massive man, easily over six feet tall, and wearing the most gaudy shades of yellow and orange you've ever seen, his shaggy blonde hair wild and thick. You'd describe him as hulking, but after meeting the Hulk, you decide that's disparaging to Bruce's alter ego. He was currently kicking a guard, and kicking the man brutally, who hardly seemed to be able to keep up with his billy club. He might have looked silly, but it was clear that he was a damn grade above those thugs you fought in the alley.

Behind him, seemingly attempting to wrench open a locked door, was an armored man. Just from the creaking of the metal, it was clear that he was definitely way stronger than Kangaroo. Had to be, if you were bending steel with your bare hands. The lab they were in seemed more or less trashed, beakers and chemicals spilled all over the place, and the floor a cluttered mess from the remains of all the fighting.

Neither of them seemed to have noticed you yet, though, which means you had the element of surprise.

"You seem a little pissed, aussie!" Your voice carries over the din, immediately grabbing the Kangaroo's attention. It only makes what happens afterwards all the worse. "Dingo eat your baby?"

"Wha-? The blonde man started to say, but he didn't get to finish the thought as you launched yourself at him, one foot positioned forward and slamming into his chest, knocking all the air out of his lungs and making his eyes bulge in a mixture of pain and surprise. The blow was enough to carry him all the way to the wall, where he grunted with the impact, looking dazed at the very least, and pretty shaky at worst.

Let it never be said you weren't one to add insult to injury, though, and with a casual flick of your wrist a line of jet black webbing shot out, sticking all over the Kangaroo and adhering him to the wall in an instant. It wouldn't be enough to conclusively take him out of the fight, but it was definitely take him awhile to wrench himself free. If anything, time was the only thing you needed to prevent these two costumed bozos from making off with whatever they were after.

At the sound of your entrance to the fight, Looter whipped out, his face one of surprise and shock, leveling the paste gun your way. The response was almost immediate, as your danger sense activated immediately flared up just in time to see the burst thick, whitish globs of something flying your way. If you didn't dodge, chances were you'd end up like some of those guards outside.

"Who the hell are you supposed to be?!" Looter roared, beginning to run towards you.

>Spectacular Success!

There's something to be said about the effects of having your body and mind in perfect coordination with one another, combined with an impressive suit of acrobatic abilities. You see them first hand as Looter shot his paste gun through the air, and you simply leapt through the barrage, twisting and turning your body in mid-air. The grin underneath your scarf was broad as you shouted back at him, approaching the villain quickly from across the lab.

"Just your local Shutterbug!" You'd be damned if Harry didn't come up with a pretty solid name for you. You'll have to thank him later for the inspiration. For now, you had no good beatniks to punch.

"And right now, I'm the guy taking your toy away!" Your statement was punctuated by another flick of your wrist, allowing another squirt of the tough, jet black webbing to spurt forth, aimed almost perfectly at the entrance to the gun in his hand. In a moment the entire nozzle opening was clotted with the webbing, most certainly preventing any more of that tiresome paste from being shot out at you.

He briefly looked incredulously at his tool, before gritting his teeth in anger. "You little shit! Get over here!" When the two of you finally reached striking distance, the armored man smashed a fist down towards you. It was slow, clumsy, and with the way your heart was pounding, easily avoided by pirouetting to the side, landing on a desk. The fist slammed into counter, breaking it in two with the attack.

Superficially, he may have been stronger than you, but he definitely wasn't faster, and his fighting style was pretty poor all together. Like most men, he seemed content to just rely on his strength alone, without any form or substance. Ultimately, it'd be his downfall.

>Sensational Success

Unlike the Looter, you've had training. Boxing classes, mandated by your father after you'd been beaten up a few times in middle school. Back then, when you were just a regular joe, you couldn't have gone toe to toe with a guy like the Looter. Too strong, too touch. Now that you were packing one hell of a wallop, faster than the average man by a mile, and could preternaturally sense danger coming your way, the scales were a touch weighted in your favor.

"Stand still! He yelled, sending a left hook your way that was telegraphed from a mile away. It sent glass shattering onto the floor as you ducked out of the way of the blow, responding with a straight punch to his chest. It knocked him back a few inches, sending him stumbling, but not yet out. You weren't afraid to press your success, though.

Your footwork was too fast for him to see, blows whipping out fast as lightning as your fists flew into his face, impacting over and over again, sending him rocking back with each strike. And when he tried to take the webbing off of his gun, you were more than kind to simply reach out and snatch it from his fingers. "Quit using your gadgets and fight me like a man!

Apparently, doing so wasn't something he could competently do, not with the way you were pummeling his face, the beginnings of bruises already starting to form on his cheeks, and his right eye swollen from repeated blows. If anything, the big palooka was barely on his feet. He just needed a proper blow to knock him over the edge.

I find it weird because you can crit on other numbers than the top 10 or lowest 10, but it might just need more fleshing out or some sort of tokens that we can use to override crifails that are damn close to the threshold.

A part of you felt sorry for this guy. He probably walked in, expecting a simple and easy robbery, and now he's being clobbered from every angle. Then again, if he didn't want to get smacked up, maybe he shouldn't have been such a goddamn beatnik and gotten a real job. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. For the crime of of trying to rob this Alchemax facility, his reward would be an uppercut to the jaw.

It was somewhat satisfying, since judging by the look on his face, he saw the fist coming, but wasn't fast enough to actually move out of the way or block it. Real shame for him, since you're pretty sure you felt something crunch on your fist as you made contact, driving most of your strength upwards. It the first time you really got a chance to use the most of your enhanced physicality, and it was damn impressive to see him slam against the ceiling above you. However, you weren't done quite yet yet with the poor supervillain.

With a deft, smooth motion as you tore the webbing off of his own paste-gun, aiming it upwards and shooting liberal globs of the paste up at him. In seconds, he was stuck to the ceiling and covered in his own chemical weapon. "It'll be a pain for the cops to get you down, but damn if it isn't funny." You're pretty sure it's only adding insult to injury when you pull out your Polaroid and take a picture of the Looter in his new, trapped state.

>Picture of the Looter, added.

"You son of a bitch! When I got out of this, I'm gonna rip ya' apart!" Behind you, the Kangaroo was still struggling in your webbing. He was almost close to getting out! With about as much pomp and ceremony as a sneeze, you leveled the paste gun and liberally applied a generous heaping to the angry Australian.

"Good luck with that, Crocodile Dundee." With the two actual villains in the room more or less defeated, you turned to the lone security guard who was still standing, staring at you slack-jawed. "You alright?"

Shutting his mouth, the guard would swallow hard, nodding slowly. "W-Who are you?"

With a huff, you'd roll your eyes and turn around to take a picture of the trapped Kangaroo, still swearing and thrashing against the paste in vain. "We'ren't you paying attention? I'm Shutterbug.

>Picture of the Kangaroo, added.

"And I should definitely stick around to get some statements from the cops." It was better you introduced yourself now, rather than cause problems down the line with the teeming masses of costumed crusaders running along the streets of New York.

Twenty minutes later, you're sitting on a broken hunk of wall, and numerous cop cars have pulled up. You're getting some odd looks from quite a few of them, but after the explanation from the security guards that were still conscious, they didn't actively approach you or mistake you for a villain. At least you're getting recognized for your deeds, no matter how minor. That felt better than you'd like to admit.

There's a particular sense of satisfaction as you see them carrying out both Kangaroo and Looter, the duo still wrapped up in the paste from the paste gun. That stuff must last a long time if you're not strong enough to break out of it, or someone else didn't cut you out of it. Good to know for the future, whenever you figured out how many shots of the gun you had left. For now, you tucked it into a pocket of of your tracksuit.

Eventually, though, you're being approached by a older, distinctly blonde man, dressed in a decent suit with a prominent detective's badge on his chest. He's greeting you with a small smile, offering a hand to be shook. "You're the guy who stopped these two goons, right? Detective George Stacy, NYPD. I suppose we've got you to thank for this." The last name is very familiar, but you're positive there's no relation to Gwen Stacy. What are the chances?

"Shutterbug," You introduce yourself, reaching out to shake his hand firmly. "No need for the thanks, sir. Just a concerned citizen and a journalist, following up on a lead."

That was enough to get a snort of amusement from the man, his smile broadening. "Well, I wish we had more concerned citizens like yourself. It'd make our job a helluva lot easier."

"So you guys can wrap the rest of this up? No need for your local Shutterbug?"

He shook his head, waving his hand in dismissal. "No, no. If that paste lasts till we get them to S.H.I.E.L.D. custody, should be no need. Don't be a stranger, though. If you're going to keep this up, remember you've made some friends in the NYPD."

Huh. Good to know. "Then I'll be off. Stay safe, Detective Stacy."

After what feels like an eternity, you take the long route around back to Harry's car. Say what you want about the guy, but he was loyal and willing to wait in the Charger for you instead of biting off more than he could chew. Probably because he was asleep at the wheel. Knocking on the glass to the driver side window, he woke up with a start, wiping drool off his face. "Whuzzat?

"Wake-up, goofball. I think the day's over." You're already slipping into the passenger side by the time he's coming awake, yawning and stretching his arms. "Think it's time to head home, for the both of us.

"Oh? Get all the superheroics out of your system, huh?"

You roll your eyes at that as the car came to life, rumbling as the two of you set down the road back to the Brooklyn brownstone you called home. The ride there was filled with you filling Harry in with the fight he missed, and showing him the gadget you confiscated off of the Looter. Technically, in a weird way you looted the Looter. The irony is enough to make you smile. Had to work that into your story somewhere.

Eventually you hop out at your home, waving to Harry as he drove off, and quietly entered your home. It was dead silent, save for the sound of a television left on in the living room. Typical. It made it easy for you to creep up gently to your bedroom, closing the door behind you as you shrugged off articles of your make-shift costume and collapsed on your bed. If you were tired before, after that last fight, you're absolutely pooped.

You don't even realize it when you're drifting off into unconsciousness, with nothing more than the memories of Hulks and middling tier supervillains dancing in your head.

>Spider-Verse Quest, Issue One, End

>For stopping the Hulk without violence, preventing a catastrophic level of destruction, and thwarting the Alchemax robbery, you have been given TWO advances. It's getting to the point where you could considered doing this professionally, once upon a time. Cost: 2 Advances

>Tinkering (Chemistry), Stage One: The need to be able to create web fluid neccistated you brute-forcing more than a little knowledge into your head. Thankfully, you don't need to sleep quite as much as you used to. You've got a pretty good handle on how to create basic webbing, and with enough time and energy you could probably learn how to create more exotic creations.

Still, you're at the point where you can begin to consider going toe to toe with real juggernauts, or the actual, living breathing Juggernaut. -20 to Strength based test DC's.

These seemed like the biggest choices:

>New Power:
>Adaptive Camouflage, Stage One: You're not entirely sure how it works, especially considering it works even when you're wearing clothing, but you've gained the ability to refract light around your body, becoming functionally invisible for as long as you can maintain the concentration. You still show up on thermal sensors, though, as well as being audible.

Officially, most major politicians don't really hold a stance on mutants. Reagan especially doesn't care one way or another, which is something of a boon and a curse as it allows rogue elements in his cabinet to pursue their own agendas. Many politicians do fan the flames of hate, though, and in New York people tend to whisper about the not-so-fake legend of mutants living underneath the city.

There's definitely a monopolization on certain superhuman elements, and it's half the reason super soldier experiments like the one that involved Bruce and the spider that bit J.J. exist. Additionally, mutants are naturally occurring superhumans, so there's definitely a focus on recruitment for them, whether people like to admit that or not. There's evidence to suggest that an uncomfortably high number of mutants fought in the Vietnam war.

I either want to go after Bruce's hot cousin Jennifer, or after that May Reilly chick that Ben Parker's always making eyes at. Jennifer's probably into law and politics, JJ's into crime fighting and journalism, it's a perfect fit. May's just because there's something special about J. Jonah Jameson hooking up with Aunt May.

I've got to say, I really don't like hats or jackets for any Spidey. They're a neat look - until he's hanging upside down from the ceiling by his feet. That got lampshaded already in the quest, when he was thinking about how he needed tighter clothes to keep them from falling in front of his face when he was standing on the ceiling in his room.

I'm not voting for anything in particular, just definitely against anything involving a hat or a jacket. Or a tie, for that matter, even if it would be a solid look.

>>3195364
Killer logo, though.

Aside from that, how would everyone feel about giving the webshooter to Harry? He could use it as a much-needed mobility device, comparatively speaking, while J.J. can probably get by on wall-crawling and super-athletics alone now that he has the Glue Gun to pick up the 'restraining baddies' slack. I bet Harry can either 'borrow' or jury-rig enough gadgets of his own to be helpful in the field as more than just a chauffeur, even if he can't do it all in the same way that Shutterbug can.
>>
>>3195147
I was wondering about what the cast is supposed to be, because we're getting the standard Parker loadout (with the addition of Bruce) but we're JJJ when main canon JJJ has a son that's Parker's age
>>
>>3195546
>Harry's our chauffeur
>Inb4 we start pulling Green Hornet type shit
I think we should have a hat and a jacket for walking around type stuff, and I don't think we should give Harry the webshooters because 1. He gave them to us 2. We might be the only ones who can swing without our shoulders popping out 3. I think we should really be our tech specialist "man behind the desk" kinda guy

everyone's talking about our suit even though we're just starting how bout a temporary suit for for us BEHOLD!!! SHUTTERBUG PROTOTYPE MK1
>>
Honestly right now the choice should be between suit patterns and tie colors.
>>
>>3195629
this costume's just a temporary thing, since running around in a tracksuit and scarf isn't really as cool.
>>
>>3195546
>I've got to say, I really don't like hats or jackets for any Spidey.

We could always hide our mask, or costume, within a hat. If not then have the head accessory fold out into a costume. The best of both worlds.
>>
>>3195305
Neat! Really like the one on the right.
>>
So general opinion for our costume seems to be something along the lines of the one on the left from >>3195415, since some ppl are opposed to a jacket, and a hat doesn't really make sense considering our wallclimbing and athletics; with our logo on the back of the vest, and without the shoes so we can actually use our sticky feet, plus an added utility belt.
Personally I'm kinda torn between going with the inlaid lenses and the aviator goggles.
>>
>>3195669
The wall crawling can still be done with shoes on.
>>
>>3195671
Why would it work, besides comicbook logic? The thing with spidey costumes was always that the fabric has to be somewhat thin so it works. If the effect comes from our skin, be it because of stickiness or microscopic hairs or whatever, how would that go through a shoe sole? I'm not a comic expert, just going off logic here.
>>
>>3195678
When he's wearing shoes he can't use his feet. Insead he climbs with his hands and used his feet for support, stability and to push off the wall if need be.
>>
>>3195680
I mean, yeah, but wouldn't it make much more sense to just leave the shoes off and not gimp one of our most useful abilities for the sake of aesthetics? Because that way we could only crawl rather slowly, instead of being able to run along walls and do all kinds of tricks. It'd also make sticking to ceilings problematic if we only have our hands to work with, and we couldn't use them for anything else, like taking pictures while sticking to a wall.

For the sake of this quest, assume J.J.'s son doesn't exist. You're 17 years old, a Junior in High School, and you've got to get a girlfriend before kids ever come into the equation.

Beyond that, I'm getting ready to archive this thread. I'm planning on running this again next Friday, since that's the next time I actually have free time to do so. My Twitter, so people can be alerted the next time I go live: https://twitter.com/CleverPlotDevic

>>
>>3196013
>Not Legs, Webbing, and the Arachnid Way
>>
>>3196253
The superman phrase fits more in J.J.'s case bacause he wants to be a journalist and get the truth; the fact that we ripped it of from Bruce's superman comics is something we'll take to our graves.
>>
Personally I'd like a black and white color scheme as opposed to the brown and faded yellow. Also, are we wearing a mask? I know we have a hero name now but I the discussion for that kinda stopped suddenly.

Love the logo idea, not sold on any costumes yet though. The kinda suit spideman typically has feels like it'd look odd with a vest or anything over it. Weirdly bulky in one or two spots with everything else being sleek doesn't feel right. I'd love something like a professional journalist, but have no idea how to combine it with the necessities of a spiderman outfit.

I mean are we wearing a shirt, vest, and slacks over a full body suit to keep arms/hands and feet covered but still able to wall climb? Should we just use a basic suit with no extra clothes, in a newspaper gray with printing ink black?
>>
>>3196839
>I mean are we wearing a shirt, vest, and slacks over a full body suit to keep arms/hands and feet covered but still able to wall climb?
Look, if spider noir and miles in his hoodie suit could do it, so can we.
>>
>>3196839
I think it's generally accepted that while the hands and feet are sticky they use their hands for most of the actual climbing. Personally I like this suit, but it could be pretty cool if it was monochromatic

>>
>>3197361
>>3197390
That shorter jacket is way better. That's a look I can actually 100% get behind, because the bottom half of the jacket can be zipped to keep it in place for things like ceiling maneuvers and other acrobatics where you don't want a parachute hanging off your back. Dark, but with enough color that you don't look like a crook, and some obvious military surplus around the edges.

Solid look for J.J.

>>3197450
>>3197456
A little of column A, a little of column B, I think. Plus, tailors for superheroes canonically exist in Marvel NYC. So we should grab our military surplus and tech gadgets, and then go to a professional to combine them all into a coherent suit.
