The ambient sound outside your chamber's window slowly awakens you, the tweeting of birds and howling winds invading your ears to call you to another day. Reluctant is your body, heavy in every limb until your blood finally gains a rush of speed. Now revived, you pick yourself up from your bed and stretch.

Briefly, your hot blood produces a headache that disappeared as fast as it came. Its a routine, finding yourself sapped of energy after hours of sleep. "I should get a servant or two," you mutter, starting off a morning's ritual.

It didn't take long to ready yourself from out of your bedroom, walking down the darkened, cold stones of your castle who you personally named Fort Raphiel. Here, you're its ruler, a self-proclaimed 'king' of this vast, hilly plain. Despite this, you pride yourself in it, enough for you to ignore the emptiness of your quarters.

You take a stop by your stronghold's kitchen, examining the stolen breads and produce that you stole from the city. It took a lot of hard work to pull that stunt off, but it was successful in the end, reassuring your nonexistent title. "It was no sweat!-- Not at all!," you thought, slicing a thin piece from a loaf, and shortly cutting a finger due to pulling your attention from it. It wasn't anything that a lick couldn't mend, continuing on as your thumb stings in the unprotected air.

"This is my reward for being such a hard worker, every king should follow such an example~ With the way how this kingdom is going along, I could probably take over it soon, or maybe the other country over as well! One more step for domination!" you announced, stuffing the sweet slice of bed upon your borrowed throne. In a way, you're right, excluding the fantasies of your thinking. Who else could've kept this structure? It was you who cleaned up this abandoned palace; of course, it was a cruel task that took weeks, though, now you can behold your home confidently. You got the menacing atmosphere just right with how black its walls are.

Your name is Edison, and additionally your 'surname', Alvinar. You seek infamy through villainy! If only you could get either of them right...

Such an eccentric person must be of possession of some kind of power? What is your identity?
> A mage who is branded as a criminal due to some hijinks within this kingdom's capital.
> A demon who aims to become a king-- a demon king! Though, it isn't any easier when every human wants you dead.

Because Edison adopting the approach of a 60s comic book villian due to the only reference point he has on hand being golden age comic books is too good to pass up.

Laying back into your throne, you contemplate about your origins. The first breath you took was inside a laboratory of sorts, full of archives, materials, and tools that serve the art of magic. Even now, your form whose akin to a clay doll, but complete with everything that makes a man, is the same.

If one would to describe your body, it would be very, very simplistic. Your skin colored in a light grey as you remain as an unfinished doll. The only physical features that you have are childish-looking eyes and mouth; other things of note is your lanky, even stretchy limbs that make you appear all rubbery.

Recalling correctly, you were suppose to be a 'honculos' or whatever-- you don't care much about it. What you do know is that after your creator, a man with a forgettable face and manner, deemed you as a failure, you were locked up in a insecure cage. The struggle of breaking the lock with your artificial hands proved to be fruitful, the heavy restraint dropping onto the floor in the dead of night. At that time, your creator was sleeping.

You couldn't leave without something, it was a feeling that stuck with you. Emotionless and only sentient without a hue of life, you took a few story books from a random shelf, only to read them later when you found somewhere safe to hide outside the facility where you originated; it was a miracle how you got pass the structure's security, nonetheless, grateful. The characters that were portrayed amazed you, but the villain of the stories did so even more.

Elusive men in dark capes, rich and powerful dragons, the general of a horde of an army of monsters and goons!-- It soon influenced you to become so, practicing endlessly to replicate their character. Not only that, you found this castle, Fort Raphiel! Your domain of evil! And not before long, someday, the world will know your power!

...At least, that's your current idea and image of yourself. You look the part, kinda; decorating yourself in coats that suit your desired display of an evil villain. But throughout it all, you found purpose. You have only the hero to wait!

The effects of your creation granted you abilities. It looks like your failure hid some sort of potential after you practiced enough.

You're immune to magic, but sadly, you can't use any of it. Not that magic interests you all that much, so you consider it an overall plus.

You sigh heavily, slinking deeper into your seat after every passing minute. Plotting takes a lot of imagination, yes, but you have yet to make one up.

"Hmm...What to do, what to do...Maybe I need to change things up, be daring into the sight of my adversaries. No, a villain must be patient and think out a complete plan...Hmm, what to do." Talking to yourself has become a habit. It helps when you're scheming your next evil deed. Carefully however, you don't want to accidentally spare your last silver coin to a child like last time!

"Ah, right! It must be because I lack henchmen! I've been doing things these past few years all wrong, I see~"

Jumping off your throne, you go to a couple of other chambers in the castle to get working on some flyers. You spend a sizable amount of hours to produce them, enough for morning to progress near midday. And at the end of your work, you create a stack of fine, illustriously decorated application papers for your future underlings.

Taking a hat from your bedroom to hide your face - without taking account of how your stature is - you exit your home with grace as you wave goodbye for a temporary farewell, heading into the city with your forms under your arm. You join a common dirt road that led to its gates, its walk bringing about nature's greatest reveals: beautiful flowers and the occasional animal that holds its head high with authority.

Upon arriving at the capital's gates, you manage to sneak yourself in with the accompanying carriages. Although having something to mask your identity, one must always ride the wave of caution. The city is always something to want, bustling citizens strolling around to do work or sell. "What will happen if someone were to disrupt the peace?" you wonder, humming to yourself loudly as you traverse the streets.

"There it is, right where it's always at!" you say, looking towards the well-established and recognizable building. Its more noticeable with how it attracts certain types of people. Those with sword on their backs or women with risqué dresses; "How indecent!-- A girl must compose themselves with safer alternatives than wearing a prostitute's attire!"

You approach the guild, so-called 'adventurers' moving out of your way for you to pass. Unbeknownst to you, you're rather well-known for being who you are, however, unknowing of your aspirations themselves. Comically, you take it as a sign of your aura, the weight of the atmosphere around you commanding them to part.

With great strides, you stop at the receptionist desk to talk to the lovely lady behind the counter. She's quite petite, her hazel hair wrapped in a professional bun and her green eyes looking up to you in familiarity; she has seen you wander the streets before, adding up to the amount of people who only sees your reputation, not the being itself. Ignoring how you tower over her, she keeps a smile. How considerate.

"How may I help you?" she asks.

"I would like to know about making my own request, Miss. For you see here are applications that I want to spread." You show off one of your flyers to her, fancily tinted in a gold-like color. An example of your art.

The young woman take a hold of the one in your hands, her eyes scanning it in a matter of seconds. "...You want to request this?" she questions, confused with your form's contents.

"Why, yes! Is there anything wrong? Please do tell."

"N-No, there's nothing wrong. But I have to ask: is this some play that you're conducting?"

> Keep your operation under wraps. "Of course! The star of the show must have a few complimenting characters, Miss."

"I must say that you're wrong, Miss," you reply, "These requests are genuine, as I am in search for accomplices to help in my efforts."

The receptionist just gives an absent glare, momentarily checking out the flyer once more before speaking again. "Uh, okay. Just sign here," she says whilst bringing out a clipboard with a sheet on it. You do as she instructs, writing down your signature onto the paper with dramatic strokes. The young woman nods when you finish; she then offers you a stapler from under the counter as well, pointing at the huge quest board on the guild building's westward wall. "Post your application there, Mr. Alvinar. Thank you for stopping by."

"Much appreciated," you say, grabbing the tool with a free hand. You took your time to thoroughly cover a good chunk of the board with your flyers, some being accidentally stapled on the wall over instead of where it's suppose to be. "Hm, must have gotten myself a bit too excited there. No matter, I have done what I wanted," taking a step back to admire the big blotch of gold.

You decide to hang out here for a while, seating yourself at the front counter of the guild's bar. "One cup of coffee my good sir," you ask, dragging five copper coins to the man before you; he looked at you weirdly, stopping when he was in the middle of cleaning a glass. The bartender just shrugs it off to give you your order nevertheless.

> Money: 25 coppers, 0 silvers, 0 gold

"Delectable, such a pleasing black," tasting the bitterness of a cup without milk or sugar-- how coffee is meant to be consumed. Loudly, you sip at your audience, showing your potential enemies the extent of your courage. Fearfully, they turn their heads away to keep their sanity in check, and triumphantly do you pump out your shoulders and chest.

Crossing your legs and leaning back into your chair, you style a slight smirk whilst looking into the eyes of those who cross yours. However, the moment they do is the moment that they rotate their necks the other way, avoiding your stare. The stronger guild members don't look to be here. They must be busy with whatever they enchant themselves with: slaying monsters and exploring dungeons. You hoped that at least one of the them would be present to meet you.

"What's this?" you think to yourself, finally holding a solid sight to another person. A girl who's painted in only black and white; pale skin and locks of hair, a black coat who hang over her head. Strapped on her back is a coffin, seemingly weightless to her. Needless to say, you're instantly interested in this person. Her fashion may need a bit of tweaking - definitely something that's more colorful - but nonetheless, she manages to catch your attention from her side of the bar. Shortly after does she break contact, showing no emotion at all.

"Dark, ominous, quiet, one of good note I see. She must have some backstory to her, a dramatic one for sure! Did she see my papers? Perhaps, she'll pick one up from the quest board," you predict.

As if on queue, where fate produced this result as a means to laugh at you, the girl drinks the remains of her cup and exits the bar. She payed no mind to your flyers, focusing on the posters that are still visible.

It's high time to meet the girl of death-- your first (possible) candidate for your villainous reign. You jump off your chair in the most excited manner, making your way to her with spectating eyes showering you in concern. Of course, you take the adventurers' signs as a prayer for success! Why would they compose themselves to look so? For you see this as a golden opportunity, a promising opportunity, a fortunate opportunity~!

The girl, who you estimate to be no older than thirteen, doesn't notice your approach. Browsing the request board takes all of her attention away from her surroundings, only acknowledging your presence when you're in close proximity to her. When a piece of your coat and hat peeked at the ends of her vision, the dainty child finally turns to you; her white eyes widen a bit at your appearance, returning to her doll-like disposition a second after.

You cough to clear your throat, bowing into another dramatical pose without shame, no, with life! "Oh, what do my eyes see?! Why, a beautiful maiden has crossed my path! Dear, I must say that this is luck-- nay! It was destiny, another play of fate!
"I invite you to join my destructive cause, a cause of the purest, darkest evil that man and monster will ever know. I invite you to create a chorus alongside me! One that the seraphs in heaven will weep when heard. And, once again, I invite you to become my Eve to this soon to be Eden of despair! Yes, despair! The feeling of complete hopelessness that corrupts a very being into oblivion! But within it shines new life, one that makes the evil prosperous, strong, and free without the chains of civility!"

All is quiet, during and after your speech. In the back, you could hear a faint clap, but is soon hushed by his or her company. The girl in front of you is taken aback, dumbfounded. And by your faith, perhaps, impressed?

Taking advantage of the girl's idleness, you make her pose along with you.

"W-Wha?..." she let out indifferently.

"Please, forgive my rudeness, Fair Maiden. I am King Edison Alvinar; my words are true to you, who, having dressed yourself in that of a reaper, has held my curiosity within your delicate fingers.
"I would love to have you as a partner in crime. It's a waste to pass this chance at a perfect performance for every kingdom to see, one that will draw every gaze, peasant or king." You handle her body's position in another picture, continuing to look down at her. Mysterious, oh how awfully mysterious~ Your face is still obscured by the shade of your hat somehow. "I know a magic, powerful person when I see one. Believe me, I have felt the arcane in this very body. It's an electrifying element that once coursed through my heart-- however, that past moment will not be the last. I implore you oh maiden of despair to take my hand and drive the wretched - us - into the limelight. All for the climatic scene against a hero of hope!"

"Uh...S-Sure," the girl mutters to you.

"Huhuhuhahaha~! Great, absolutely great!" throwing yourself in a laughing fit. "I knew you'd see the vigor of my vision. Enamored are you, Fair Maiden?"

She nods her head slowly, bearing no hesitance, but sustained a mechanical rhythm instead. "...Sounds fun"

You expend the last of your chortles, asking of her name next. "Fair Maiden, may I know your name?"

"Dalia," she answers.

"Dalia," you repeat to yourself. "Miss Dalia, do you live in your own house? An inn maybe?"

The girl replicates the same mechanical motion, this time as a shake of a head from side to side. "No. I sleep here overnight."

"How sad!" clutching your chest where your heart is suppose to be, "Could I interest you to my quarters? I can supply you with a living space at my castle, my poor accomplice."

"Castle? I...I don't know."

"You shall not worry, Miss Dalia, it's a humble domain. Fort Raphiel has been my home for many years now and I can safely say that you'll grow comfortable there too. I just stocked up on food a couple of days earlier thanks to my dastardly expertise."

"You have food?" a sprinkle of emotion animating her face, eager at the thought of a delicious bite.

"A little selection of bread, fruits, and vegetables, freshly picked from the market~ Though, is something wrong? I never thought that mentioning my pantry will excite you."

Dalia recedes into silent contemplation for another minute. "Will follow. Still hungry," she says with determination. "I can only afford a sufficient amount of ale once a day or two."

"Then that's an agreement! I shall lead you to my darkened fort!" you proclaim, grabbing Dalia's hand to guide her into the streets.

Orinisteia, the Relinoir kingdom's capital, is ever so lively. And such liveliness lasts from the brink of dawn to the moment that dusk settles under the horizon. You anticipate the imminent encounter with the country's finest: soldiers, knights, the righteous kind, and the powerful who remain at the top of the kingdom's institutes. Surely, your future battle against the members of the Royal Guard or the Church's Wings will be a legend for every scholar; though, it's good to stay in your current state. You wouldn't want to get ahead of yourself-- the finest waits for their time to strike!

You calm down after you and Dalia exit the city's gate, letting go of her wrist and apologizing profusely about its suddenness. "Where are we going?" Dalia asks you along the dirt road, her monotonous voice daring to displace a vibrancy in the air.

"It must have been so fast for you that you forgot my words. Again, I'm sorry for how rough I was, everything was so exciting~" Moving on, you question the huge coffin that's three times her size, strapped and chain to her. "May I know about this curio?" pointing to it.

"This? It's my weapon and my bed," she answers.

"Now that we're partners in crime, what shall I call you under operations?...Ah, how does 'Black Dalia' sound?"

"Like a code name? I don't see a problem with it," going along with your playfulness apathetically. "What shall I call you?"

"Now that you mention it, I do need some type of alias. It must reflect a relationship of mine; something like yours? Or maybe what I rule."

You haven't decided much for the future. "King Edison Alvinar, or maybe only Edison if you find it easier, Miss Dalia. Until the day that we obtain a spotlight, I'll hold off on another title."

"Un, okay," she says, looking at your home in the distance.

The moment you return to your castle you immediately show little Dalia around. You tour her the dim, gloomy dungeon down below, the towers up high that overlook the plains, and lastly, her own room-- one of three spares that exclude yours. Ever since you cleaned the fort, each one of them are kept tidy and neat, every sheet and pillow either stolen or swindled for your possession. Now that there's another person here, you could split up the chores so you can concentrate on other tasks. Should you start learning yourself to cook? That has been on your mind for a while.

Dalia unchains herself, dropping the heavy coffin next to the bed. "Food," she requests.

"We didn't pass the kitchen did we? Come, a proper meal for my new henchman~!"

Your first cooking experience could've been worse. It is to be expected for one who never had the time to learn the culinary arts. But a simple recipe for stew was good enough, its aroma floating throughout the kitchen while Dalia indulged in it.

"It's warm," she mumbles. You can tell that she neither hated it or loved it, but her appetite is another thing. The little reaper was able to eat out most of the pot, leaving you puzzled, if not amazed. You guess that you should've predicted this, for it is a girl who lived off of alcohol during an uncertain amount of time. Anyways, you hurry to wash the cooking wear and dishes.

You come back to Dalia, a few huge papers and a pen in your hands. "Now that we have well acquainted ourselves, I think it is time to plan our first evil deed together."

She tilts her head, "Like what?"

"Anything that we can think of: stealing a single sock from a stranger's laundry, putting a pebble in another's shoe without looking, or perhaps finding an unique source of money for us! That isn't even the last of it, Miss Dalia, I have millions of schemes that are stuffed in this clay head of mine!"

"Clay?"

"Hahaha! Forget about that last part-- Let's decide our course of action tonight!"

The rest of the day was spent by education Dalia of what it means to be a true villain, pulling excerpts from your story books and lining out examples of how a villainess should act. She seemed to understand most of what you've said, perfectly acting out roles of an evil queen or a female warlord. It was as if she was some kind of robot, mindlessly fulfilling orders in an inherent dependency.

Her likeliness as an automaton aside - doubtful, as she is as warm as any human being - the night soon blanketed the evening sky for both of you to exact evil. "To the bakeries and gourmet shops, Black Dalia, like we have planned! This will be the start of our reign!" you announce, your glorious coat flapping to the strong, forceful winds. You're trailing a secret path that you had made for this type of occasion; a hole that opens to the other side of Orinisteia's walls.

"How many again, Mister Edison?" Dalia's head clouded by the reward of sweet confections.

"At least forty! Don't worry, you can have some, if not all since you sport a gluttonous void for a stomach. We cannot have evil without vice and sin. And gluttony is well-regarded to the sinners of the world. Let's go while the night has granted us its blessing!"

The main streets are still full of wandering couples, salesmen, and drunkards. To avoid any attention, you lead your partner through the outer paths, alleys, and slums of the bright capital. Even there, where poor residents of this rich city go about their common day in depressing pity, the shine of the moon brings them something joyous in the dark; commanding gatherings of both homeless and the low-class.

Nonetheless, all of the bakeries that are present in Orinisteia are located deeper within the coordinated buildings, forcing you to traverse into the common wealth's district. But it seems that the gods in heaven have put up your first obstacle of order in this epic.

A guard catches sight of your suspicious getup, stopping you and Dalia in your tracks. "Hello, I couldn't help but notice you two. May I know where you're going just in case?" he says politely.

Dalia looks up to you, clutching the chains of her coffin as she is ready for a fight.

"Haven't you heard, guardsman? It is the Night of the Cursed Spirits! I was just about to lead my wonderful daughter to the gathering~!" you say, Dalia looking at herself when you claim that she's your child.

"A holiday? I don't recognize the name. Sounds pagan," the guard presumed.

"Why yes, it is. It originates from the north where the winters are longer. Haven't you heard about the recent travelers from there?"

"No, I have not. What about them though?"

"Well, with every mass immigration of some kind, people will take along their traditions. It has reached a point where the foreign populace has made some roots here in Relinoir. Of course, me and my daughter are born here, but we wanted to spectate the exotic scene for ourselves, maybe buy a cake there."

"I see. Then I wish you luck with the gathering," the guard says before walking off to the next block.

You turn to Dalia, "Easy as that. Let's resume our merry way~!"

The hunt continued, you and your partner finally comes across a well known bakery. It has had a few personal orders from the noble class, so this should hold quite the sweet treasures. The baker has gone home for the night, telling from the locked doors.

Helping Dalia reach the roof, you have her pull you up to meet the bakery's chimney. From under your coat is a folded up bag, big enough to maybe fit around ten boxes of cake. "Black Dalia, Dear, wait up here. I'll have this shop empty by no time," you instruct, jumping down the chimney's cavity; your body, lean and slender, is enough to fall down smoothly through the soot stained vent.

There, all alone, you behold a magnificent collection of carefully baked and decorated confections. Quickly, you take enough packing boxes out of a shelf, neatly stuffing each one of them inside your bag.

There is one cake that seems special. While the others are colored vividly, this one is ornate and white. A note is at its side, mentioning a noble's wedding.

Love the little drawing.

Approaching the cake, you write into the frosting with a soot covered glove. "I hope it rains upon your wedding day - Love, Edison," you engrave in black letters.

After clearing out what the shop is worth for, you head back into the base of the chimney. Hours and hours of posing has trained your legs to withstand your own weight, and additionally, your cake filled sack; shifting along upwards till the cold night air blows against your cap at the top.

"That's one shop, a couple more to go!" chipper and lithe like a court jester. You carefully drop your sack onto the ground below before landing as well, reciprocating Dalia's actions by helping her down.

Throughout the night you steal and raid the bakeries of Orinisteia, depriving citizens and nobles alike the chance of enjoying the indulgent food. You can only hope for the effect of your note within the wedding cake; if you're calculations are right, it'll be quite the talk for the upper-class depending who is to be married by tomorrow or so.

When you completed your score, you find your sack full and Dalia's coffin stuffed. The little reaper couldn't help but snack on the cakes along your way to Fort Raphiel, a cheek slightly caked by a tid bit of frosting. Herself alone has drained your bounty by half the amount, the number being increased when you actually make it to your castle's doors.

"...Want some?" Dalia offered at the kitchen, surrounded by confectionery boxes.

> "No, it's alright. Enjoy yourself as you have proven your worth as a villainess. I'm also not much of a sweet-tooth."

"A slice maybe. I'll have to cook up a healthier breakfast in the morning to combat all of this sugar. But go on, eat~!" joining Dalia with a single piece of velvet while she finishes the rest of the rewards.

Dalia stretches her arms and legs within her stool. One who looks like a small child will probably have the processes of one, your new partner calling it a night as she reports to her room. You were left with disposing the boxes, bagging them up in something more discardable for you to take care of in the morning.

It is only when you start wandering the fort's corridors where your curiosity draws you to its call, a crack in Dalia's door showing her coffin laying upon the room's bed. Dalia herself was nowhere to be seen, for all you know, she could be washing herself in the castle's bathroom.

Ignoring the curio, you move on to your workshop. That place is where all of your magic happens; a few buckets of paint stay organized in a remote corner of the room, one of which is a gold mixture that sits next to the other artistic palettes. Obviously, there are more than just paints, brushes, and paper-- the supplies that you have somewhat resembles a trophy of your charismatic exploits, no matter how silly or foolish. Not that you notice how people see you.

Many fabrics of all kinds are stacked within cabinets and shelves, threads and needles accompanying them as well. A life sized wooden doll is placed next to the cloths for the convenient production of new clothes and costumes, a few completed works hanging at its side. An array of pens and inks are symmetrically aligned on top of a table that centers the north-most wall. And last, but not least, is a bookshelf with its contents filled. Said contents are story books, those that remind you of your purpose. The collection started from the first four that you had with you, gradually finding yourself a miniature library.

If only you can say the same things for your safe in comparison to your artworks. Its empty, and all you have on hand are 25 copper coins to fund your livelihood with Dalia now added to the mix. Rather than feeling despondent, you laugh it off. Your philosophy wills you to. "Hahahaha! I can always find more in the pockets of bankers. I do not believe that Lady Luck will stop smiling upon me, as she has already gifted me with the little flower of death and will continue to bless me onwards. That is my faith, so hear it, Heavens," your voice softly echoing around you.

An outfit made for and by a true gentleman thief
>>
>>3175015
Look impressive, but imposing. We want to have the image of a final boss or BBEG.
Maybe we could use a color scheme to complement our skin color.
>>3175143 is good, but too simple. We need an elaborate outfit for ceremony and a practical outfit for work that shows our style and villainy nonetheless.
>>
>>3175209
You know, I can see that now. We'll keep the suit for lower minions instead.
>>
>>3175143
>>3175015
loose sleeves are mandatory for dramatic effect, weapon concealing and freedom of movement when pickpocketing

something tight and neat for our slim body but also a large imposing and heavy cap

>>3174906
> Work on a new outfit for yourself. This is the moment of metamorphosis.

We can put those sleeves to use as anon said. Stash weapons under it. Even toss it of dramatic before a big fight.

I dunno, Doctor Doom is a bit too dull for Alvinar, who is a villain pretty much because they're REALLY FUCKING EPIC and our outfit should reflect his villain-worship; maybe we could take inspiration from the storybooks we read.

Getting to work, you envision the new outfit as your hands act on their own; the picture is right in front of you, printed against your cartoonish eyes as an ephemeral schematic. Despite the fleetingness of the image, your artificial brain does its damnest to record the vision.

The essence of time is nothing to you, your speeding senses untouched by the overwhelming passage of the night. When all is done, you take a good look at your new attire, the symbol of your metamorphosis. A grand butterfly's moment.

You designed the outfit after an ornate military dress, brimming with a powerful aura that replicates the same majesty of the court. A well-crafted mask partially covers your face, only revealing your right eye. The velvet coat & hood that hangs upon your arms and shoulders is loose, sequenced with black, purple, and faux gold decor. The vest is very much the same, however, it prides itself as the main piece. "I can rival the king's wardrobe," you say to yourself, "For an artist is as high as any royal! May nature and nothingness be present in this room, and let them gaze upon my new picture."

Maneuvering yourself in a strange test, you find yourself satisfied. The cloak and vest are just right, enabling you to comfortably move around as the wind. You may be able to hide a few weapons under your sleeves-- that's how great it is. You're more than just a gentleman thief, placing a fine top hat on your head to finish the final touch; you're the King of Thieves, the incarnation of all romantic escapades.

Exiting your workshop, you return to the kitchen to cook up some experiments. Right now is a fine time to get a better grasp at the science, studying the way how ingredients mesh together into dishes. You had to hold your enthusiasm as to not exhaust the pantry; though, not that it will make a different with how Dalia is. You must support a growing girl after all.

"Hmm, I just hope that those scantily clad women didn't have an influence over her," you tell yourself, tying an apron over your chest. "Still, how indecent..."
_____

From the window, the Sun's beams start to invade the room. Once again, you became excluded from father time in another fit of absorbed interest.

Behind you, contained within the stairway that leads to the kitchen, are the faint pattering of shoes. With enough common knowledge, you knew who this was.

"Food," Dalia drones lazily, her hair disheveled from sleep.

"Just in time~ Here, have some of this."

You pass along a plate for her, the little girl testing it for you. "Better," she utters, slowly chewing.

Going over to Dalia, you use your tendril-like fingers to comb her ghastly hair straight. "How do you like my new outfit?" asking of her opinion.

"It's okay," she softly answers, reflexive without a thought.

"Would you like a new one yourself? Something tells me that you haven't had a new pair of clothes for a very long time. Attentive I am, for you see, my role is need of such attribute. And I'll happily supply my partner~!"

"You would?...Always wore the same thing ever since I was born."

"Ho~? Then I'll take that as a yes, Miss Dalia."

Her eyes match the sight of yours. "That's...Okay."

While combing her bangs, you uncover a peculiar mark. On her forehead is a line of text, faded like a scar and barely visible without squinting. The little girl doesn't notices your concentrative gaze, continuing to eat her meal. You could line out what it says: "Date of Production - Day twenty-five of the first month, Year 1085."

You make a note for today, whispering to yourself. "Today is the third month I believe, day 21. The year is...1086. Yes."

Done with the little memo, you put the written paper into a pocket. You then suggest that the both of you should enter the city again, to which Dalia agrees when finished. Orinisteia seems all the same, the effects of your scheme invisible. No, it's just the morning. You should wait a bit more.

Let's just say that you have garnered the attention of the populace, and in effect, Dalia too. Your unique clothes do make you out for a noble with the exception of your mask. The morning light of the day accentuated the quality of Dalia's coffin, its wood looking near to stone.

Like a flower, you're ever so energetic within the Sun-- more cunning under the moon. You can't help but skip a little in your step.

Entering the Adventurers Guild, you immediately check out your posters. They were all covered up recent request, the only remaining sign being the ones stapled to the wall. "Can't weep over every lost application, can I?" you conclude with a shrug. While you're at it, you look at the other request that are not yours. You could make some proper funds if you do take up a job.

Dalia tugs your coat for you to look down. "Do you have a guild card?" she asks.

"No, but please tell why, Miss Dalia."

"Can't take quest without one." She shows you hers, a laminated identification card that displayed her current rank and other fields of information.

"How hard can it be?" you comment before heading to the front desk.

The same girl who you briefly talked to yesterday is there to meet you again. Her eyes lit up by the new look, but settle when she recognizes your voice and mannerisms.

"Good morning. How may I help you today, Mr.Edison?"

"Likewise, Sweet Miss. Today, I want to register myself as an adventurer here. My partner," hinting at Dalia who's beside you, "has told me about its contents, so I am aware and confident about the results. I prefer to do this by the current hour if it's possible."

"S-Sure! Just fill out this form here."

The receptionist gives you another clipboard. Swiftly do you fill out its fields and give it back to the young girl.

After analyzing the form for a second time, she nods. The receptionist then exits the opposite side of the counter, joining you and the little reaper. "Please follow me," she instructs, leading the two of you through a pair of doors that lay deeper behind the building. "This is the Guild's private training grounds. Do wait for a couple of minutes so I can get a staff member to test you."

The receptionist leaves you for a moment. Meanwhile, you observe the grounds before you; the roof has changed into glass, the area copying a barrack's training field. At every wall and corner are tools for combat: blunt swords and spears, and fake arrows that accompany the training dummies who are battered and beaten.

"How was your time here, Miss Dalia?" you inquire.

"Passed smoothly. My opponent couldn't be crushed however."

("Huh, crushed?") you question to yourself, silent.

After a short period of waiting, the receptionist girl finally returns. With her is...

The receptionist girl returns with a female mage. She carries a strict poise that pairs up with a ripe maturity; a single glance can freeze the toughest man in place. Her yellow eyes glow under a maroon shade of hair, tied in a frizzled bun that hides under a mage's hat.

She furrows her sharp eyes, adjusting the glasses that rests upon her nose. "Is this the guy? Doesn't look like the sort of person to be here."

"He is indeed. This is Mr Edison," the receptionist girl says, introducing you. "And Mr.Edison, this is the guild's strongest mage, Ms.Morgana, not accounting for other guild mages inside or outside the country."

"A way with words, huh?" the woman remarks tiredly to her fellow staff member. She sighs, "Well, I assume you know why I'm here. Come along into that ring over there." You follow Morgana into the designated spot, a large rectangle that's outlined with white paint. The two remaining girls stay at the sidelines.

The receptionist tells you the rules for this exam in haste: "Both the applicant and the examiner must abstain from using any techniques, spells, or items that are instantly fatal. The exam will be deemed finished the moment that either person is exhausted, unconscious, or if he or she forfeits. Additionally, any instance of exiting the ring will briefly pause the test, resuming once either person re-enters. However, it must be under ten seconds before it becomes an automatic forfeit. Is that clear?"

"Yes, Miss," you confirm.

"Then get ready." Both you and Morgana focus upon one another, the atmosphere growing quiet and dense. Even if you're a few meters apart, you could seen each other's eyes; Morgana shortly showed a subtle discomfort to how yours is fashioned, just a little animated dot in a similar style to a doll. "...One...Two......Three!!!"

You instantaneously displace yourself the second that the receptionist's words left her lips. As long as you keep dashing about, Morgana will not have an easy time.

"Pretty smart," she says. The mage starts to string along sentences to form a chant. As she swiftly progressed the spell, a circle appears from under her feet; the bright green sigil then breaks apart into smaller versions, randomly covering the field. It sprouts many weed-like vines, whipping at your feet to hold you down.

Luckily, or more so instinctively, you manage to dodge the plants' attempts to snag you in due reaction. You may have the strength of an average man, but stamina and reflexes are another matter. Still, without a thought of approaching Morgana, you prance around.

"An earth mage I presume? Or a special type that I have not heard of," you say whilst dancing around.

"I'll tell you later maybe, this is an exam," she replies in a deeply focused tone.

Your feet coordinates themselves in that of a play, flowing around in a fluid motion that is not hindered by the snapping vines. Like water, you graze the ground to grab a handful of sand, taking off into a powerful jump. Morgana tries to hit you out of the air by conjuring an array of extending plant maws, but each and every one of them misses your stretchy, thin body that is now one with the battle's rhythm.

Landing near her, you throw the sand at her face. Morgana reacts by taking a step back, shielding her eyes. That grants you enough of an opportunity to take a pace forward, striking her side with your right leg.

She falls back, the vines catching her as the mage falls. After clearing her vision, she cleans her glasses in a rush to bring herself back into the match. The warm pressure on her hip inhibits her to stand, however, she doesn't lets up. With full force, Morgana conducts the numerous organic tendrils to shoot off in unison, but another jump is just what you need to get out of the way.

Morgana's tenacity is just a product of her local title. For it shines in this moment; nonetheless, you have completed the match, rising as the victor. Your jump lunges towards her thereafter once you have evaded the vines' manipulated attack. It resulted with you pinning her down, Morgana blocking your blow with her arms.

"Close combat is not my strong suit you see," she says, laying down on the ground. Morgana tries to get up but you prevent her to do so, pushing down - lightly of course - to keep her in the same position.

The receptionist girl claps once when she sees the sight. "Guess that's a wrap," she announces, "The exam is over, the two of you can now rest yourselves."

Hearing this, you let the mage get up, dusting her dress off and joining the sidelines. You, too, get back to Dalia's company again. "How was it? A stunning performance, may I add?" you address to the two guild workers.

"Yeah...Your noodle of a body is like firing at a stick mid-air," Morgana tells, adjusting the glasses once again. "Doesn't help with that mask of yours, but who cares right now. Annie," now talking to the receptionist, "He's pretty strong-- or, er, unique. C rank for sure."

"C ranks?" 'Annie' repeats to Morgana, tilting her head. "Pretty high for a starter, though, not my decision. I'll be right back." The receptionist girl once again is absent from the group. The amount of time to wait was a couple of minutes longer, but before long, she comes back with a card in her hands. "Here, this is your guild, Mr.Edison. Do take care of it."

"I hear you," tucking the identifying piece into a secure pocket. "The match was a fun show, don't you think?" you then ask Morgana.

"Yeah, yeah. If you actually got stuck then it would be more fun for me," she answers. "Hmph, no wonder that girl is with you."
>>
You look to Dalia, "Her?"

"The child's fighting style is as twisted as you. Might as well be a circus troupe of two. Anyways, this whole thing is over, go free somewhere..."

"May I know anything of how to elevate my rank?"

"Once you hit a certain threshold by completing quest, or alternative, great feats, you'll be brought in to be tested again. It'll be a different type-- won't tell since that's half of the fun."

"Hmm, well, I am one who follows that rule as well. Now with a card in possession, I'll take your offer an leave. It is nice meeting you, Ms.Morgana."

The mage waves her hand, lax in motion from side to side. "Leave the pleasantries alone. See you around."

Making your own way out of the training grounds, you and Dalia take a stand in front of the request board with newfound determination. The day is still young, and taking on a guild quest will kill some time till tonight. That is when will you commit another plan of villainy. The thought makes you smile all too much.

"Too short, can't see," Dalia says, only able to read the bottom-most posters. "You, Lord Edison?"

("Lord Edison? Not too bad~") indulging in the little reaper's call.

Ripping the request paper off the board, you take it to the front desk where Annie is back standing. She confirms the quest, stamping a corner of the paper for it to be authorized. Just then does a thought go through her head. "Oh! That reminds me. To confirm a quest, you must bring proof; a part of the monsters you have slain or the requested items itself. Additionally, you can sell or keep any materials that you come across-- that is, if you have the means to do such. I presume that you're hunting normal skeletons, so their magic cores is what you're looking for. I also need to point out that failing a quest will be a twenty copper fee, the cost escalating depending on the quest's difficulty or urgency."

"The advice is appreciated, thank you, Miss Annie," slightly bowing before exiting the guild building with Dalia.

"Weird fellow..." she mumbles to herself, although, you were not there to overhear it.

The forest that lies in the outskirts wasn't that far. Its treeline could be seen by the wall's west gate, whereas Fort Raphiel is located in the plains that trails to the south. The thicket's air is clean, if not dense with an organic smell. You have yet to come across what you are looking for.

Walking through the woods yielded no encounters, at least, not anything that you have noticed. The forest looks fine and natural from what you perceive, the animals' activity going about in its normal ways.

The serene stroll ceases when Dalia pulls you to the side, forcefully in fact. You take shelter behind a cluster of bushes. "Can hear clattering somewhere," she tells you, peeking through the thicket.

As Dalia foresaw, a group of skeletons stray through the trees. Their movements are functional enough to shift across the ground with the occasional clunkiness in their joints. Their bodies aren't just humans, rather, a mishmash of a whole variety of animals that are glued together. It would be no mistake to call them an amalgam of bones than just 'a skeleton.'

You scout out their magic cores. So far, every one of them are nestled inside their rib cages. Their empty skulls are ignorant to your present location.

Okay until QM proves otherwise I'm '''convinced''' that Edison was created as part of a bid to make a kingdom ending supervillian.

You follow the mob of skeletons, their lifeless bodies shuffling between the trees. Without the proper knowledge of these monsters' behaviors, as they all feel off for some reason, you depend on your assumptions to narrow out the possibilities. ("Another mage?...Or a lich maybe? That could be useful~") hoping - as you always do - for the best.

"There," Dalia alarms, pointing at a cave; each and every skeleton entering inside until the shadows overtake their bodies. Without precaution, you go into the cavern head first with your reaper guarding the back. Luckily, the ceiling of the subterranean structure lets in enough daylight to see through ahead.

At the end of the tunnel is something exceptionally amazing. An old lab that was constructed at the back of the cave; the skeletons you followed are standing against its walls, paying no mind to your being. The few tables that are left is littered with books, and useless junk. But within the desecrated trash is a chest, buried beneath dirt and rocks. Another unnerving detail is the huge, drawn-out circle under your shoes-- a magic circle with an unknown purpose that looks to be made of old blood.

Your mind is instantly drawn towards the chest, but before going any further, you wipe your shoes on a rotted carpet.

Touching the protective wood, that hasn't softened in any way, lets off a second's moment of light. It was probably magically sealed, however, the magic itself was weak. ("Must have deteriorated over time,") lifting the latch to open the compartment.

The chest's contents is...a void; more like another storage system. Even touching it doesn't dispel the nothingness, now knowing that is isn't magical as well. The deeper you reach, the more you can feel an open space until something touches your fingertips.

It's another hand, the fingers wrapping around your wrists. You lacked a certain surprise, but it was a minor jolt that came out of your arms when he or she grabbed you from inside the chest with cold palms.

Pulling back to retrieve who this person is, you slowly realize that it's a woman that you have fished out from the void. A twenty year-old with a healthy complexion. However, there is a slight problem that concerns her appearance.

The ends of her hair worm about as if they're alive-- no, they are just tendrils that only looks like hair. Her nails are abnormally strong and sharp, the same for her teeth which looks like a shark's; minus the additional rows of prey-killing incisors. Two horns peek out from the top of her head. They curl and stop at the ears, who, on a description of their own, are elf-like.

The woman's eyelids start to rise, dizzy, telling from how much time she took to regain proper sight. Dalia, who stands on your left side, is grasping at her chains for a possible fight with some sort of demon or whatever.

Resting her against the wall, you wait till consciousness is present within the woman. Still, she's dazed, even if her being is all intact.

"Excuse me, Miss, are you alright? May we know your name? I wasn't expecting things to become this way, and clearly, nor do you," you say to the woman.

"...who am I?" she repeats quietly. The voice alone mimicked a little girl who's stuck in the slums, ridden with strife and hardships-- the tragic kind.
But then, her broken expression on her mouth contorts into a grin, "Who am I? Who. Am. I?! Why, I'm Jerseiy-Yaghtnora!" Suddenly, the demoness jumps up to stand upon her legs; you and Dalia take a few steps back in reaction, more confused than scared. "Hohohohoho~! I am the demon god that stalks every forest! I am the unease through the fog and night! I should say, instead, that who are you?!" pointing a finger at your body.

"Haha~" you chuckle, overjoyed, "I'm King Edison Alvinar of Fort Raphiel! This here is my partner, Black Dalia~! We are the impending evil that will salt the lands of Relnoir!"

"Tch, so you call yourself an evil? That's absolutely laughable! Pathetic! People like you shouldn't walk anywhere near where I stand, let alone live! My being is the incarnation of evil - er, one of them, but that's not the point - the type of evil that is painted in legends and told by prophets. You should be bowing to me! In fact, I'll fix it right now!"

The demoness' locks extend outward, the tendrils forming themselves in that of a scorpion's stinger; a thick coat of mana covered the pointed end, radiating a inky blackness that dripped onto the floor. Everything happened in a flash, the eldritch spear piercing into your chest...

Well, that was suppose to happen. Rather than killing you, the tendrils instantly dull and the coat of cursed mana dissipated in a blink of the an eye.

"W-W-W-W-Whaaaat?!?!" yelled Jerseiy.

"Quite a show~ A technique fitting for a demon goddess!" clapping your hands for the dumbstruck demoness.

"I-Impossible! No man should survive that!-- Even a demigod would fall to a severe illness once struck!"

"Flattering~ I thank you for the compliment, Miss Jersey. It looks like whatever that box did to you failed to chip away at your feminine splendor."

'Jersey' blushes, "Shut up! I've been locked in that chest for at least a thousand years! If it wasn't for all this, I would've gone out to hunt that hero who tricked me! The hell are you?! You ain't human! That girl t--"

Before Jersey could finish her sentence, Dalia flings her coffin at her body. The little girl used the chain and casket as a flail, punting the demoness into the wall; the skeletons themselves shift away from the scene.

"Another one?" Dalia asks you.

"No, it's alright. Today's been a fun one so I'm just taking things in stride."

You get closer to Jersey to check if she's alright, knocked out under a few rocks. As an act of kindness, you take a table cloth from the surroundings, covering her naked body while adjusting her into a more comfortable position. You tell Dalia to watch over her until you're done looking around, to which the little girl does so by sitting next to the demoness.

The skeletons' magic cores are still of importance. They show no resistance when you get a hold of the orb in their ribs, crumbling into a dusty pile of bones the moment it's taken from them. One after another, you gather the cores into your arms that added up to a number of fourteen; Dalia assisted you in carrying them by keeping the orbs inside her coffin, leaving you free for the remaining curiosities.

The occultic circle on the floor doesn't do anything when you touch it. There's a book that draws the same exact graph, but as you already know, you're unable to handle magic. You ask if Dalia could do it but she is inefficient in the art herself.

In an effort to at least know a little more about what you're standing upon, you look into the other journals. Most of the writing is faded or torn; nonetheless, there are a few in an okay condition. They had more graphed circles and what you assume to be spells. Explanations are documented on the sides, detailing magic effects that make no sense to you. What you discern as the essentials within each journal are written in another language that you cannot speak, making the chants undecipherable.

Your eyes glance about the lab to see any similarities with where you were born, the difference being no lesser than a gaping canyon. Your birthplace is more sterile and white; it held a professional atmosphere and you could tell that it was funded from an outside source. Not that your creator wasn't rich himself.

The chest was a peculiar one. After thoroughly searching its form, you found a tag that stated a high price, even for a noble's standards. "Five-hundred gold coins? A huge sum. Though, it's understandable if one knows its contents," speaking to yourself.
"That seems to be it, nothing else to see here, Miss Dalia. Could you pack up Miss Jersey in your coffin as well?" you say, picking up the magical box; it's size and weight is nothing, easily carried with one arm alone.

"Un. Yes." The little girl picks up the demoness with little difficulty, nestling her straight inside her coffin alongside the magic cores. When done, she shuts the lid tight and starts to strap the chains around her body again; like a magic trick, it was done in no time.
>>
The way back to Orinisteia was unremarkable. Jersey was unconscious all throughout the way - a testament to Dalia's inhuman strength - even when you stopped by the adventurers guild to turn in the magic cores and complete the quest.

For completion, the receptionist girl, Annie, paid you twenty copper coins. You also sold the magic cores while you were at it, netting you an extra seventy coppers; a total of one silver coin with fifteen left over. The process was a bit tedious with how Jersey was inside Dalia's coffin, removing and replacing her body in a place that was safe from the populace's sight. With that done, you decide to return home. In the end, obtained quite the pay and a magic chest as well.

> Money: 15 coppers, 1 silvers, 0 gold

Back at Fort Raphiel, you and Dalia gather at the throne room. You set the magic chest by the foot of your grand seat to focus on Dalia's coffin; she opens it to reveal Jersey, asleep and motionless.

You now understand why Dalia said that coffin doubled as a bed. The casket is furbished in a nice violet padding, a pillow of the same material comforting the demoness' head while a blanket is tucked into a corner.

After waiting for a considerable amount of time for the demoness' slumber to end, she finally shows some signs of waking. The first thing that she sees is your throne room's ceiling, the new sight leaving her to question the current area that she finds herself in. In between such little time, Jersey then brightens all to fast at the realization; she springs herself up, frantically looking around.

"Where am I?!"

"You're awake~!" you exclaim, "Just in time as well!"

"In time for what?!" Jersey yells back, "Wait, it's you! A-And that girl too!"

"...So, you want me to join you?... Hohohoho~! I would only take the spotlight from your petty crimes. It'll be just a humorous act that even an imp would be ashamed at. My name has been bigger than yours even before you were born! A church will go burning villages the moment they hear of my return-- that's how much," Jersey replied. "Demon goddess of the forest, remember?! Tch, don't have any time for a carnival like you."

Dalia comes in for another surprise, "'Jerseiy' is only a children's story."

"What insolence! That can only be so if I have been locked away for so long! Besides, it's not like my name would wane over the times unlike an insignificant brat and her father!"

"Only children's story," Dalia repeats, "Little scorpion who tricks people..."

"Why, you!!!" the demoness said, annoyed with how this little reaper could back.

Jersey gets out of the coffin to attack the little girl, however, like before, she fails astonishingly. Just when a foot was about to plant itself on the ground, Dalia pulled the coffin's chain to trip her. The lid made Jersey fall backwards; she tries to recover herself but it brought the indestructible casket down in less that a few centimeters by her face again.

Knowing how outmatched she is, Jersey then pleads. "O-Okay, okay! Stop!" she begged afterwards while Dalia starts to sway another throw of the tether in her hands, "I'll join, I'll join! Just stop this brat!"

"Ah~! How fortunate!" you announce, completely aloof with how your partner did things, "I knew it that we would see each other from eye to eye~"

Dalia's emotionless expression briefly turns into a smug grin at Jersey which only makes the demoness more frustrated; her ashen black hair and eyes grow in an excited anger, subsiding the moment you continue the moment.
