You are Myon Uesugi, a young ninja girl from the Village Hidden in the Mist, and now you are about to meet the mysterious leader of your village; you are about to meet the Water Shadow himself. After several days travel across the sea, you have returned home to Kirigakure alongside your sensei and your teammate. Together, the three of you spied on the Land of Fire as they slowly built a naval fleet. After thoroughly sabotaging their vessels, you and Zabuza were confronted by a newly christened Chunin from Konoha named Anko Mitarashi. You killed Anko in a vicious struggle underwater, yet somehow it appears she may have been revived through some mysterious means. Regardless, you now find yourself about to relate all of these events to the supreme leader of your village.

Years ago, the Mizukage was a figure that you feared as if he were a Devil. Back before you began your ninja training, you had heard stories of how Lord Mizukage commanded monsters and how anyone who would be caught walking in the shadow of his castle would be cursed. Yet, here you are now walking down a hallway to meet that very Devil inside his own castle.

“You two follow me lead.” Sensei Juzo mutters under his breath, leading you and Zabuza inside Lord Mizukage's chambers.

The room is fairly spacious and decorated with various swords resting on stands and suits of armor put on display. What you half-expected to look like a throne room comes off more as a dimly lit armory. However, hidden here and there amidst the arms and armor are also what appear to be masks on display.

A moment later, you realize these masks are attached to faces that watch the three of you enter. Anbu Ninja, elite Shinobi who live shadowy lives as killers and bodyguards to the Mizukage. Dozens of them creep forward out of the mist.

“My lord,” a male Anbu’s voice echoes. “Juzo Biwa and his students have returned.”

Sitting toward the back of the airy chamber, surrounded by a half-moat of running water filled with floating White Lotus Flowers, is the 3rd Mizukage. You recognize him almost immediately by the white and blue robes that adorn him and by the conical blue hat on his head that displays the symbol “Water”. This being the first time meeting him face to face, you take note of his severe expression and long white hair as evidence of his advanced age. It makes sense that he would appear so old, as you have heard that he was a contemporary of the First Mizukage as well.

“Lord Mizukage.” your Sensei says loud and clear. “The mission was a complete success. The Land of Fire’s fleet has been sabotaged exactly as you commanded.”

“Is that so?” the 3rd replies, his gravelly voice barely above a whisper. “Come closer, all of you."

The Three of you do as your lord commands and approach him. Juzo comes to a stop just before the half-moat and reaches for his sword, causing several Anbu to loom closer from out of the shadows. Juzo glares at these masked ninja while taking his blade, Executioner, and placing it upon the ground. He drops to a knee beside it.

“How are you feeling, Lord Mitsuhide?” Juzo asks, his glare softening.

“Better,” your lord replies. “that dreadful cough I had when we spoke last is gone now. A spring allergy perhaps?”

“Mitsuhide?” Zabuza mutters to you. “That’s his name?"

You shrug at your teammate. You had never really heard the 3rd’s real name before, and found it a little ironic that is was almost exactly the same as his title. Realizing it would be improper to ask about such a thing now, you and Zabuza merely copy your Sensei by placing your swords on the ground and dropping to a knee.

“I am very pleased,” Mitsuhide speaks. “this success once more attests to the strength of the 7 Swordsmen and their progeny. You should all feel proud of the service you have rendered on behalf of the village.”

The 3rd Mizukage leans closer in his seat, and you are suddenly stricken by the sight of his widening eyes. His eyes are as black as the bottom of the ocean.

“Myon, Zabuza, one-half of the Bloody Four.” he drones. “Already a legend at such a young age. The Final Exam truly brought out hidden talent this year. It is thrilling to imagine what prodigies would emerge next year, but unfortunately there will be no exam next year. There will be war next year, I trust you are both prepared?”

“Yes Lord Mizukage.” you reply.

Zabuza merely nods.

The Third quietly looks the two of you over while clearing his throat.

“I believe the two of you have earned some rest,” he says as he turns to Juzo. “but I’m afraid YOU are needed elsewhere. I have work for you and your six companions.”

Juzo falls silent for a moment and glances over his shoulder at you and Zabuza.

“I haven’t had my two students for much more than a month,” Juzo says. “I still need more time to prepare them for the--”

“Your two students will be waiting for you here,” the 3rd interjects. “until then I have several A-class targets for you to eliminate.”

It appears the 3rd has already made up his mind. Losing your teacher now would deny you much of a chance to train, although this WOULD be a good time to reconnect with your friends and family.

What does Myon do?

>Remain quiet and respectful while your Sensei deals with the Mizukage?
>Plead with the Mizukage for a little extra time to train with Sensei-Juzo?
>Ask the Mizukage how your companions, Junko and Kasumi, did on their missions?

You continue to kneel, your eyes adjusting somewhat to the darkness. Juzo converses a little more with the 3rd, revealing a few minor details of how your mission went down. Lord Mizukage appears to be pleased, nodding silently while your sensei answers questions that he didn’t necessarily appear to ask. As the debriefing comes to a close, you find the confidence to address your Mizukage.

“My Lord?” you ask, earning his attention. “Now that we’ve sabotaged the Land of Fire’s fleet, how will the war proceed from here?”

The Mizukage turns his head and stares at you with his dark eyes.

“As I am sure Juzo has related, those explosive scrolls you planted on the ships are aligned with MY chakra. When the time comes, I will detonate them and lay waste to Konoha’s navy. However, that will not be happening just yet…”

The Mizukage closes his eyes and rests his cheek against his open palm.

“Konoha won’t have the luxury of dealing with us quite yet.” Mitsuhide mutters. “Iwagakure is eager to make the opening strike. I am content to let them have the honor.”

“Iwagakure?” Zabuza asks. “The Village Hidden in the Stones? They’re going to attack the Land of Fire first?”

The Mizukage nods at Zabuza as he raises an eyebrow at your lordship.

“Iwagakure has been preparing for years, building up a vast army of Shinobi in preparation for this coming conflict.” the Mizukage opens his eyes and stares down at the three of you. “In essence, I foresee Konoha forced into fighting a war on multiple fronts. Konoha will come to see the conflict with Kirigakure and the other villages as secondary fronts, which serves our purposes well.”

You frown at Lord Mizukage. It was not particularly flattering to hear so much of this war you were about to participate in only to be told that your efforts were only part of a “secondary front.” You envisioned this war as being an opportunity for revenge and glory after all.

“So are we all ganging up on Konoha then?” Zabuza asks with a chuckle. “Doesn’t really sound like they’ll have a chance if we’re all allying against them.”

The Mizukage shakes his head in reply, as if Zabuza's lighthearted reply struck a nerve.

“The enemy of my enemy, is NOT my friend. He is simply another enemy to be dealt with at a later time…”

As eager as you were to get on with the conflict with Konoha, you knew well enough that there were other villages that ravaged your homeland in the last World War. Perhaps Lord Mizukage already had some plan in mind for dealing with the other villages, AFTER Konoha was defeated.

Looking into his cold deep gaze wouldn't yield any insight however, and you felt a little anxious about probing any further...

Feeling that you wouldn’t be able to pry anymore info out of Lord Mizukage on how this war would develop, you decided to take advantage of the chilly silence to ask something else.

“Lord Mizukage, were the rest of the Bloody Four successful like us?”

“Oh?” Mitsuhide drones. “As a matter of fact, they were. Kasumi of the Kaguya Clan made short work of the pirates she was ordered to attack. I have heard that she has become something of a hero to the villages those pirates lorded over, turning the sea blood-red in their honor. As for Junko, she was somehow able to convince that traitorous Ashigaru captain to retire early, and a younger more diligent officer took his place.”

A smile blossoms across your face upon learning that your two friends managed to come home safe and victories, just as you had. It had been almost two months since you had seen either of them and you felt eager to see them again.

“Juzo, let us discuss your next mission.” the Mizukage mutters.

“Yes sir.” Juzo sighs.

Your sensei casts a tired look at you and Zabuza before gesturing toward the door. It was clear that your presence was no longer wanted, so you and Zabuza gave a final bow to your sensei before leaving. The two of you exit the Mizukage’s castle after walking through his narrow, and quite eerie, corridors. When you emerge out into the cold night air, Zabuza is quick to exclaim—

“Figures we’d get screwed over like this!”

You glower at Zabuza, casting a look over your shoulder to make sure no Anbu were listening in.

“We make it back home only to get our sensei taken from us.” Zabuza spits. “Pretty crappy reward if you ask me. How are we supposed to get stronger now?”

You sigh back at Zabuza. It was disappointing to know you wouldn’t be able to learn any new techniques from Sensei in a while, even if you found Zabuza’s display a little childish.

“Pfft, guess I’ll go and see if the academy pool’s still open.” Zabuza grumbles.

“Hey wait, you’re seriously going to go train NOW? You’re still covered in bandages from that beating Anko gave you.” you sneer.

Zabuza shrugs his shoulders.

“I hate just waiting around…"

You roll your eyes at Zabuza.

“I won’t be around to bandage you up this time, so don’t get hurt.”

Zabuza snarls in reply and turns his back on you.

“Don’t bother. I can take care of myself.”

With that, you and Zabuza exchange pleasantries and go your separate ways. While Zabuza heads off towards the Academy in hopes of renewing his training, your thoughts drift to other obligations.

“You’ll be an honored guest! I can show you my room, the clan catacombs, even our sparring grounds! I’m sure my clanmates would love to see us fight.”

You chuckle as your last memory of Kasumi repeats itself in your head. Kasumi seemed rather surprised that you would come visit her in the hospital to begin with, but accepting her offer to visit her compound made her positively giddy. As strange as she was, you couldn’t help but find the Kaguya girl’s quirks a little charming. Besides, its not as if you didn’t enjoy a little bloodshed yourself.

“Alright, the Kaguya Clan compound is… this way?”

It takes you a while to find the place. Wandering away from the 3rd’s castle, you drift through a few neighborhoods before approaching the outskirts of Kirigakure where the landscape becomes more rural. Away from the narrow streets and crowded alley ways that mark your village, you spy a tiny walled settlement on the horizon. On its walls you observe a symbol consisting of two red dots arranged horizontally, the Kaguya clan seal.

“Found it!” you exhale.

Breaking out into a run, you make your way toward the open gates only to stop dead in your tracks at a grisly sight! To your surprise, the walls of the settlement appear to be lined with severed heads!

“What the fuck?”

Another memory flashes through your thoughts, that of your father carrying the severed head of the Hozuki clan Elder into your home. It was a shocking sight then, and now seeing so many heads lined up in a row is enough to make you balk once more.

“w-What the Hell is this?”

Gawking at the gory display, you heave a sigh and continue onward toward the Kaguya clan compound. You take note of the anguish and terror in the faces of these severed heads while you approach the open gates. It is a little odd, and disconcerting, but there are no guards to greet you. Instead, you are able to walk right into the compound unopposed and unannounced.

“Hello?” you call out amidst the inner courtyard. “Is… is anyone home?”

You see a few lights on in some of the tiny houses in the distance, a faint glimmer seeping through the paper walls and doors. Yet no one immediately acknowledges you.

“Weird.” you grumble. “Why isn’t anyone— ACK!”

Bouncing back on your heels, you narrowly avoid several kunai which embed into the dirt where you once stood.

“Shit!” you grunt, drawing your katana out of its scabbard.

“Ha! You look a little lost!” a male voice squawks.

Looking upwards, you spy several figures standing atop the the roof of the compound’s main building.

“Let’s see what you’re made of, shall—“

“Myon-san?” one of the shadowy figures cry out.

Hopping off of the roof, one of the strangers rushes towards you. Readying your sword, you prepare to engage in battle until you spot the figure in the glow of a nearby lantern's light.

“Kasumi?” you reply, lowering your sword.

Slowing her pace, a slender and pale figure steps closer to you. Her red eyes blink in confusion while she approaches with her open palms raised. For a moment, the two of you simply stare at one another with the only sound breaking the silence coming from the crackling flame of lanterns.

“Myon-san!” Kasumi shouts. “You came!"

“Uh, yeah I—“

You recoil as Kasumi clears the remaining distance between her and you in a heartbeat. In fact, you feel her before you even really see her as Kasumi’s hands clench around and gently squeeze your off-hand

“I’ve been waiting to see you Myon-san. They told me at the 3rd’s castle that you were still away, and your mother said the same!”

“m-My mother?” you stutter. “When did… you met my mother?”

“Yes! She’s a very very nice woman! And a good cook! And—“ Kasumi stops herself short and promptly lets go of your hand. “Oh, forgive me. Did you want to come inside? I can get you something to drink if you’d like?"

You blink at Kasumi before turning your attention to several figures who also come forward. They look to be older male members of Clan Kaguya, judging by their muscular appearance and steely stares. At the moment, each of them look to be quite confused with what’s unfolding.

“Sure?” you shrug. “Lead the way Kasumi.”

A few minutes later, you and Kasumi are sitting off by yourselves in an airy but well-lit room filled with plush pillows to sit on and a warm fire to relax by. The fire currently heats a stone pot of tea which Kasumi busies herself with preparing.

“Please make yourself comfortable.” Kasumi entreats.

Placing your sword by your side, you lean back and accept a hot cup of tea poured by Kasumi.

“So, Lord Mizukage told us your mission went well?”

“Oh yes,” Kasumi nods while pouring her own cup. “my sensei and I traveled together to a small little island near the edge of the country. It was quite a charming place, perhaps like the island you were born on Myon-san.”

Kasumi daintily raises her cup of tea and blows on it before taking a sip.

“The pirates there were also quite charming.” Kasumi says with a smirk. “They boasted on how they’d take me prisoner and sell me into slavery, but that was before they realized I was a Kunoichi. There must have been well over three hundred of them, spread across a dozen separate ships. It was a simple matter of waiting at a village for them to attack and then…. oh! Did you want to try some sugar with your tea?”

“Three hundred pirates?” you balk. “You slew over three hundred pirates?!”

“Arrrgh.” Kasumi innocently growls.

You blink at your pale friend as she giggles, her cheeks flash red with embarrassment while she drops a tiny sugar cube into her cup of tea.

“I find most tea to be a little too bitter, so I like to spice it up with some sweetness. And yes, I did kill them all.” Kasumi mumbles. “My sensei mostly watched and made sure none of them escaped. I think you would have enjoyed it Myon-san, it was like going on a vacation."

You stare down at your own cup of tea and take a swig. You always knew Kasumi was a strong shinobi, but you never imagined she could take on so many combatants at once. To hear her talk of it like it was a walk in the park was something amazing indeed.

“I guess your new sensei must've really been training you well.” you chuckle.

“Indeed, my Taijutsu technique is stronger than ever thanks to him.” Kasumi replies. “He’s no Seven Swordsman but he is very good to me.”

You smirk back at Kasumi who gives you a knowing grin. It dawns on you that you had never really told Kasumi about your own teacher or the training you underwent, but you suppose word has a tendency of getting around rather quick.

“So Myon-san… how did your mission go?”

You place your cup of tea down beside your sword and rub the back of your neck. While you hadn't amassed anywhere near the body-count Kasumi had, you still felt you had accomplished a great deal.

“Well, it all started back at Kappa Station…"

Kasumi slowly enjoys her tea while her gaze locks onto you. Her eyes appear to flicker with the light of the fire underneath the teapot as you recall the journey over the sea before infiltrating the forests in the Land of Fire.

“You crossed over the entire sea in such a tiny raft?” Kasumi whispers. “What did the forests look like?”

“Huh, well the trees were massive. About as tall and wide as some of the skyscrapers here in Kirigakure.”

Kasumi doesn’t press for more info, and simply sips her tea while hanging on your every word. You continue the story with little interruption until you reveal Anko’s dramatic introduction. Kasumi gasps as you recall how you and Zabuza evaded her notice while she ridiculed the Ashigaru General. She seems quite impressed with how you were able to stealthily avoid Anko, even remarking once or twice how you could have ‘gotten the drop’ on her whenever you wished.

When you finally near the end of your mission, you dive right into your confrontation with Anko Mitarashi.

“By the Gods,” Kasumi exclaims. “she was strong enough to defeat Zabuza?”

“Well, almost” you chuckle. “Zabuza kept fighting, but I don’t think he would’ve made it if I didn’t step in.”

“You're incredible Myon-san.” Kasumi catches herself, raising her teacup and hiding behind it. “i-I mean, that’s incredible.”

You chuckle back at Kasumi, pleased that you were able to get a rise out of her. Going on with the story, you recount the fight blow-by-blow right up until it seemed Anko might have been unstoppable. At which point you ambushed her, dragged her beneath the waves, and choked the life from her.

Kasumi is practically swooning, swaying to the side and swishing her sugary mess of tea about.

“It sounds like such a vicious encounter.” she sighs. "Like something out of a poem.”

“Ha!” you laugh. "I don’t know what kind of poems you’ve been reading…"

Your smile falls as you recall the strange bubbles Zabuza discovered coming from Anko’s resting place. Recalling how you read more on Anko and her vaulted sensei Orochimaru more-or-less confirms in your mind that you likely failed to kill her.

“That’s wonderful!” Kasumi cries.

“Eh?” you croak back.

“That means you’ll get to have another duel with her at some point!” Kasumi shouts. "Ohhh, I hope I might be able to watch it next time!"

“I wouldn’t mind seeing it myself!”

Kasumi’s eyes widen while the two of you turn your gaze to a screen door which slams open. Strolling into the lounge is a muscular figure with long black hair that is tied into two tight strands that almost resemble sideburns. You can tell immediately that he is a fellow Kaguya Clansman, but he is clearly one that you have never met before.

“Going head-on with a Chunin trained by one of the Sanin?” the man grunts. “Not bad, not bad at all!”

“Clan Patriarch.” Kasumi says, rising to her feet and bowing.

“Clan Patriarch?” you mutter under your breath.

“I’ll have a cup of tea as well, Kasumi.” he grumbles.

“Of course!” Kasumi chirps.

In a strange turn of events, you now find yourself sharing tea with not just Kasumi but the leader of her clan as well! You’re unsure how much of your story was heard by the Clan Patriarch, but he seems almost as impressed as Kasumi herself does. The utterly maniacal smile that he and his clansmen sport is becoming a fairly common sight by this point. Kasumi herself is beaming much more innocently as she offers to refill both your cups.

Also the purge happens after the war. The purge was only taken in effect due to Kaguya wanting the war drag as long as they want.

or was it? they became a footnote in narutoverse early on/
>>
>>3167825
The wiki says: The clan was noted for being very savage and battle-hungry, having no tactics when entering battle that they initiated simply to show off their ferocity. It was due to this failed attempt to prove themselves that the entire clan was killed off when attacking Kirigakure; even when surrounded and completely outmatched, they refused to back down, preferring to fight to the death simply to entertain their own bloodlust to the last.[3]

Relaxing for another few minutes, you eventually put down your empty tea cup and sigh. Before Kasumi can refill it, you give her a sharp smile and ask—

“How about that rematch I promised you? I think its been a long time coming.”

Kasumi blinks at you only for a wide smile to erupt across her own face.

“Yes! Yes please!”

Standing back up, Kasumi reaches over and grasps your hand to help you to your feet.

“Clan Patriarch,” Kasumi says while lowering her head. “may my friend and I please use the Battle Grounds?”

“Bah!” the Patriarch growls. “You don’t need my permission for that.”

The Clan Patriarch unceremoniously guzzles down the rest of his tea before hopping up to his own feet.

“Come along then girls.”

Following the Clan Patriarch out of the lounge, you allow Kasumi to lead you by hand through the compound. You note how quiet and open the streets are within the Kaguya Clan compound, at least compared to Kirigakure’s streets. As you follow along, you do notice how several more houses appear to be lit and even spot a random Kaguya clan member here and there relaxing as a family on their porches.

“This is the first time I’ve ever been inside a Clan’s holdings.” you say aloud. “Its very nice and quiet here.”

“Oh, you think so?” Kasumi replies. “Thank you.”

“Heh, when we first settled down we chose to put our compound as far off into the countryside as possible.” the Clan Patriarch grumbles. “I doubt the other clans could handle us living right next door to them.”

You frown at the Clan Patriarch whose back remains turned to you as he leads the way. It was a little strange to hear him speak of the village’s other clans in such a way. Your own experiences with the clans were limited to Kasumi, and of course the Hozuki Elder…

“When my family chose to settle here, we ended up building a home just outside the village as well.” you call back. “My father insisted on it…"

“Your father is a smart man. Ha!” the Clan Patriarch bellows. “Too many eyes and ears in the city, too much politics and people looking down on each other. I’m sure you get enough of that yourself don’t you?”

You furrow your brow at the Clan Patriarch.

“Uh, I’m not sure I follow.” you reply.

“Well, the Uesugi aren’t a proper clan as far as I know.” the Patriarch says. “That would make you ‘Common-born trash’ to some.”

You can feel Kasumi’s hand tighten around yours. Glancing at her, you can see that she has a blank expression on her white face. You’re about to ask if she’s feeling alright when suddenly you find yourselves standing in front of a locked gate that appears to lead into a courtyard.

“But you’ll never hear that from us!” the Patriarch shouts. “We Kaguya don’t give a rat’s ass what your name is or where your from. To us, all that matters is STRENGTH!"

The Patriarch brandishes a key and unlocks the gate, letting its chains hit the ground and revealing the symbol of ‘Death’ that was etched behind it. Pushing the gate open, the Clan Patriarch opens the way inside and gestures to a large stone platform in front of what looks like a series of spectating stands.

“Here you are girls.” the Patriarch mutters. “If you don’t mind, I think I’ll stay a while and watch you fight.”

Leaving you two alone, the Kaguya Clan Patriarch walks up onto a separate stone platform behind the benches where a covered throne lies. Turning back to you with a renewed smile, Kasumi whispers—

“The Patriarch is in a good mood, I think he likes you a lot.” she stifles a small giggle. “I knew my family would. Now let’s go!”

Kasumi leads you atop the stone stage. There are no torches lit here, but there is so little fog out here in the country that the moon and stars are able to shine brightly above. Kasumi slowly unbundles her tiny kimono and gently lays it aside, revealing a white Gi that has the Kaguya clan symbol on its backside.

“Hmmm,” Kasumi hums while stretching. “there’s no blood to spill our water onto this time. I never really cared for that anyway. Clan Patriarch! Would you be willing to count to ten for us when one of us falls to the ground or falls off the stage?”

“GLADLY!” the Patriarch shouts back.

“Excellent!” Kasumi giggles. “Are you ready Myon-san?”

You smile back at Kasumi and nod. Bending forward, you bow to your friend who copies you and bows in return.

Bending at the knees, you stare Kasumi down with a grin while grasping your scabbard tight with one hand and gripping the handle tight with the other. Her smile widens as she adopts a bladed stance, clenching her fists while staring at your sword.

“FIGHT!” the Patriarch commands!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NlEOkh7ZFU

Kasumi breaks off into a sprint, heading straight for you at the speed of a galloping horse! Timing yourself just right, you unleash one of your favored techniques!

“IAIDO-DRAW-JUTSU!"
>97
>Great Success!

Kasumi clears the distance to only a yard or so away when you let your sword fly out of its sheathe!

"Ah!"

Your opponent gasps as her feet skid across the stone floor, only coming to a stop several yards behind you. Looking over your shoulder, you watch as Kasumi clenches her side and drops to her knee.

“Ack!” Kasumi coughs. “w-Wow.”

“Kasumi?” you cry out. “Hey, are you OK?”

Kasumi’s responds to your question by collapsing onto the ground

“KASUMI!” you shout.

“1! 2! 3!” the Clan Patriarch bellows. "4! 5! 6!"

Staring in shock, you start to rush over to check on Kasumi when you see her suddenly bolt back onto her feet. Twisting around, Kasumi faces you to you with a renewed smile despite the fresh blood staining her Gi.

“i-I really thought I could outrun your sword, but your reflexes have gotten faster!” Kasumi stammers. “OK! No more playing around!”

Kasumi bends her knees and grips her fists tight.

“I’ve been looking forward to showing you this Myon-san, my newest and strongest technique!”

You feel a small gust of wind billow past your tattered leather jacket as you resume a battle stance.

“Gate of what?” you ask.

Another gust of wind, stronger than before, blows past you as Kasumi disappears. You flinch, reading your sword for her while wondering what the Hell technique that was. She didn’t perform any hand signs, so how did she suddenly vanish…?

Kasumi’s fist jabs into your cheek, causing you to stumble backwards! Refusing to blink despite the flash of pain, you watch as the white and red blur that is Kasumi blitzes around you. Following her movements, you raise your sword and slash at her as she attempts to jab you again!

“She’s fast!” you cough out.

Raising your sword, you force Kasumi back just in the nick of time. Kasumi disengages and attempts to circle around you. You consider running away to put some distance, between you and her but then you realize that it would be foolhardy to try to outrun her now. You can barely keep track of her as it is!

“Here!” Kasumi shouts!

You slice your sword through the air, but as you expected she’s already gone. Knowing you’d likely miss, you recover quickly and guard against Kasumi’s roundhouse kick!

CLANG!

Your eyes widen as Kasumi digs her heel into the brunt of your blade. Somehow, your sword is only able to dig a little bit past the skin and draw only a few drops of blood.

Her body has literally become a weapon.

“Kasumi,” you huff. "What kind of technique is this?”

“Heh heh heh!” Kasumi giggles. “My sensei taught me that most people can only use 20% of their muscle strength, but with this technique I can now use all 100! I’m 100%!”

Flipping backwards, Kasumi adopts a ready stance and gestures for you to come at her!

Kasumi has become so fast and so strong that you don't think you'll be able to keep up with her! However, there isn’t much of a reason for you to be fighting fair like this.

“Guess I’ll take a page out of Zab’s bingo book…” you mutter while sheathing your sword.

“Hmmmm?” Kasumi hums, leaning forward with a deadly gleam to her red eyes. “More Iaido-jutsu? If you want to play chicken again, then I’m game.”

“Heh,” you chuckle, rubbing your bruised cheek. “wasn’t quite what I had in mind.”

Letting go of your sword, you quickly shuffle through the hand-signs needed to conjure a thick cloud of mist!

>69
LEWDLOCK ENGAGED

Kasumi recoils as she figures out what you’re planning, but by then you’ve already finished the last hand-sign. Her blur of a body barrels towards you like a lightning bolt, but as she gets closer you and every inch of the stage are enveloped in mist!

“Curses!” Kasumi squeals. “This again?!”

While the two of you can no longer see each other, you can most definitely hear Kasumi! Without raising your own voice, you silently approach her with your sword raised high.

“Soundless-Murder-Jutsu!”

“ACK!” Kasumi screeches, your sword slashing into her backside.

Dropping to the ground, Kasumi twirls her legs out from underneath you!

“Argh!” you grunt.

You tumble atop Kasumi while your sword clatters onto the ground. Its hard to see what’s happening, but you can feel Kasumi squirming beneath you.

“Damnit, where’d my sword—OOF!”

“ah-HA!” Kasumi shouts. “I got you now!"

Squinting your eyes through the mist, you catch sight of Kasumi’s legs locked around your body. As soft and frail as they appear, Kasumi’s legs are currently making you feel like you're stuck inside some kind of torture device as they squeeze the life out of you!

“k-Kasumi…!” you choke.

“Heh heh heh heh!” she chuckles

Your heart begins to beat much more rapidly as Kasumi's harrowing laughter fills your ears.

“You’re going to break my—“ your stammer.

Seizing up, you stare anew through the mist at the rest of Kasumi’s body. Seeing your confusion, Kasumi looks down at herself as well. It would appear that that last attack of yours, has made short work of most of Kasumi’s Gi. She now lies beneath you, all of her upper body laid bare with only a thin sheet of mist separating your gaze from her exposed upper body.

“MYON-SAAAAAAAAN!” Kasumi shrieks, covering her chest with her arms.

You stumble back up to your feet as Kasumi’s legs slacken their grip. Her flushed red face can be seen even through this mist.

“What's going on in there!?” the Kaguya Clan Patriarch bellows. “Should I be counting right now?!”

“Uhhhh?!” you mumble.

Seriously though, all jokes aside, we should continue. War is going to break out, and if Kasumi freezes up because battle damage wrecked her clothes, then First Gate or not, she's going to die.

You slap a hand against your cheek and hiss as you unintentionally hit the bruise Kasumi inflicted on you earlier. As your temper flares, you glare down at the ground and spot your sword off to the side. Scooping it up, you rest your weapon over your shoulder and call out to your friend.

“Hey! Kasumi!”

Kasumi squeaks back in reply somewhere in the mist, causing you to exhale a sigh.

“I uh, I know this is kind of awkward but we’re going to be fighting in a war really soon! We can’t just let ourselves get distracted by stuff like this or else we’ll wind up dead!”

You can hear Kasumi sniffling a little somewhere around you.

“i-I know,” she mutters “can we please fight some more?”

Chuckling, you grasp your sword once again with both hands and shout—

“Hell yeah we can!”

Pushing that compromising image of Kasumi from your thoughts, you adopt a battle stance once again. Shifting your back, you try to work out a kink that your foe put into you. Luckily nothing was broken and it seems that previous clash left her far worse off. Having suffered two slashing injuries, it was a testament to Kasumi’s determination and her new technique that she was able to keep fighting.

You knew she was out there in the mist hunting for you just as you were searching for her. She was trained in Soundless Murder Technique as well, but it was clearly not a tactic that suited her style. Thus for the moment, you held the advantage…

Lightning is best for piercing in narutoverse. Best cutting power goes to wind, so you'll want that if channeling in the blade through chakra flow is your goal.
>>
>>3169010
Of course the problem THERE is wind is weak against fire. A water primary/wind secondary deal certainly wouldn't be bad though. (Honestly if I was banzai I'd just go 'you live in water, you're water primary. Roll a d7 for secondary, you have half odds of earth because it's on the other corner of the known world.')
>>
>>3169010
Yeah wind nature would be best with moves like Iaido-Draw Technique and our Dragon Hammer Flash Technique. We could also work in a technique that gives us extra hidden range either by extending the wind chakra past the tip of the sword in a quick, brief flash or by launching a blade of it when we strike.
>>
>>3169035
Having dual natures is rare though. I'd rather just have Banzai roll for it anyway. Water country is called that because water release is common so just make it a d10 and make water 6 or lower, 7 8 9 10 another element. Not to mention not having the nature doesn't lock you out of Justus of that nature, they just cost more chakra and are harder to work.

Breathing slowly, you quietly walk forward through the mist with your sword at the ready. She was dangerous, but you were sure you could take her down now. All you needed was one final cut…

A little sweat drips down the side of your face as you stare aimlessly through the mist. You can feel that drop of sweat drip all the way down your jaw before it splashes to the ground.
No sooner after that did you hear Kasumi’s feet rapidly dash across the stone!

“There you are.” you whisper

Crouching closer to the ground, you silently move further away from where you once stood. For a moment, you think you saw a blur pass by through the mist but you know better than to trust your eyes. Instead, you close them and follow the sounds Kasumi is making. Its hard to tell, but you think she is moving slower out of caution lest she run into you.

“Gah,” Kasumi sighs.

Quickening your pace, you slowly approach what you believe is Kasumi and—

“Zan!” you sneer, stabbing your sword through the air.

Opening your eyes, you see a pale figure standing just a few feet in front of you through the mist. Just as you predicted, your sword now rests directly under her chin.

“Its over Kasumi!” you cry out.

The two of you stare each other down through the mist for several long seconds.

“You… would have killed me just now,” Kasumi whispers "if this were a real fight?”

“Huh?" you mutter back. “Well yeah, but I don’t want you getting hurt for real."

Kasumi sighs, her shoulders sagging.

“I yield, you win Myon-san.”

Breathing a heavy sigh yourself, you pull your sword back and stuff it into your scabbard. Standing this close apart, you can see Myon giving you a bow. With a smile on your face, you bow in return.

“That wasn’t a bad fight.” the Patriarch grunts.

Turning aside, you watch as the hulking form of the Kaguya Clan Patriarch walks up.

“Could’ve lasted a bit longer if you asked me, and I wish this damn mist didn’t block my view, but it was still a pretty decent fight."

“Thank you Clan Patriarch.” Kasumi says.

“Yeah, thanks…” you mutter.

The Clan Patriarch folds his muscular arms over his chest and smirks.

“Uesugi, you’re free to spend the night if you want. Kasumi, go get yourself cleaned up. I don’t want you getting sick before that Sensei of yours comes back to train you.”

With that, the Clan Patriarch walks off through the mist and leaves the two of you alone. Exhausted after that duel, you believe you’ll be taking up that offer to spend the night.

“That was very fun,” Kasumi chirps. “but I guess I’m going to need to find a way to beat that that Hiding-in-Mist technique if I’m going to win next time!”

You nod at Kasumi, placing a hand on her shoulder and smiling.

“Here, I can help you get bandaged up. I’ve had a lot of practice with that lately…"

That's all for now folks!

I'm going to likely continue this thread late on Saturday night, but I'll monitor it until then if anyone has any questions.

Thanks for playing, its nice being back!

Dual natures is rare, being less bad with a second nature than you are with the second three is fairly common.

Myon is going to be separated from her Sensei for a while, but there will be some opportunity to learn new Jutsus before he returns.

If you guys are interested, Myon might try to ask friends or family for training in something or she might even go search for a temporary teacher.

Also, I recall that Juzo gave Myon a rough explanation on the existence of Chakra-natures. If Myon wishes, she might try to discover what her nature is.

Well I mean we've got 3 moves atm. So it'd be nice to branch out. Or raise our skill level with the sword. Maybe have the ability to summon a sword/make one out of water/whatever we never lose our primary method of fighting.
>>
>>3169135

Yeah learning our chakra nature would be cool along with maybe another move

>So it'd be nice to branch out. Or raise our skill level with the sword.

Either of those are possible. Zabuza is an example of a character who pretty much max'd out his ability in Soundless Murder Technique and Water Clone jutsu, and that ended up serving him pretty well in the Final Exams.

While training under Juzo, Myon managed to upgrade her Iaido-Draw-jutsu. It might be possible to grow stronger in her other techniques as well or to just focus on swordsmanship itself.

Here is a list of her current techniques as a reminder.

>>
>>3169211
Our sword is our main style so training that will only improve our over all skill. That plus one basic long range jutsu to round out our ninjutsu since they're all utility. A basic water bullet jutsu would do wonders for expanding our potential strategies.
>>
>>3169288

Honestly, our number one priority should be to learn the gates from Katsumi. Our speed and physical strength will Increase immensely while using them, and there are several tiers of gates to use If we want to go balls-to-the-wall.

That would be pretty fucking scary. We could just nothing personell pretty much any enemy genin and pose a considerable threat for a good number of chuunin.
Considering we don't have yet any gimmicks other than good swordsmanship, we could really use that to step up our game.
>>
>>3170774
Maybe , but would our sword be able to take that level of abuse?
>>
>>3170816
Only one way to find out. But seriously, we're gonna need more than mist and iaido to fight competently in the war.

Also appropriate.
Myon's sword techniques are all Rurouni Kenshin references, and Hiten Mitsurugi-Ryu is described as being incredibly stressful on the body, and requiring an almost inhuman level of physical fitness to be performed safely. Kenshin, having dipped out on his training early to run off on his damned fool idealistic crusade, set himself up for long term problems by being a wiry bastard. Pic related is his teacher (Hiko Seijuro XIII), and this is the normal build for a Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu swordsman. Fuckin' jacked. By the end of the manga Kenshin has caused large amounts of irreversible, long term damage to his health, due to his skinny manlet body not being able to handle it.
The Gates are perfectly in keeping with this, with the risk of crippling oneself Lee-style if one overdoes it compared to what they're ready for.

You awaken the next morning feeling refreshed. Remarkably, even after spending days in the wilderness and in the middle of the sea, you were able to fight hard without sustaining any serious injury. Your friend can scarcely say the same.

“Good morning Kasumi.” you mumble while suppressing a yawn.

Your friend continues to snooze as you kneel over her futon.

“Kasumi?”

You wave a hand over your friend’s face, but she doesn’t so much as stir.

“Heh,” you chuckle and shake your head. "I guess the fight took more out of you than I thought."

Thinking back to last night, you recall Kasumi explaining a little more how that special technique of hers worked. By the sound of it, opening the chakra gates could grant someone incredible power. However, the strain it could put on a ninja’s body was intense. Knowing this, you decide it would probably be best to let your little friend get as much sleep as possible.

“Maybe we’ll fight again when you feel better.” you whisper down at her. “Eh Kasumi?”

You watch as what looks to be a small smile spreads across Kasumi’s face. Grinning back down at her, you pat your friend’s head before rising to your feet. Donning your tattered leather jacket and equipping your sword, you discreetly take your leave of the Kaguya Clan Compound.

Its a bright new day despite the ever-present mist that looms in the distance over your homeland. Walking down toward the Village Hidden in the Mist, you found yourself with many opportunities on how next to spend your free time. Without a mission pending or your Sensei around to issue new orders, you are free to do whatever you wish.

What will Myon do now?

You come to a stop along a lonely road overlooking the village. As long as you were this far out, you figured you might as well make a stop at home. Besides, you really wanted to make sure your folks knew you were safe. It was weird thinking your dad had been home all this time while YOU were the one miles and miles away…. at least you hope your dad was still home.

Running up and down a few rocky paths and through a few farmer’s fields, you find that you’re able to make it back home in record time. After running so many miles around the Island of Death, running home feels like a walk in the park. Coming to a stop just in front of the yard, you wipe the sweat from your brow and smile.

“Home sweet home.”

Walking up the veranda steps, the first thing you hear is your brother wailing. With a sigh and a shake of your head, you open up the front door and cry out.

“Mom, Dad! I’m home!”

You kick off your shoes and walk further inside, yet no one calls back to you.

“Hello?”

Stepping into the dining room, you suddenly come face to face with your father with your crying little brother in his lap.

“Dad!” you cheer. “You’re still here! I mean, uh, hi!”

You sheepishly rub the back of your neck and walk over to him, yet he doesn’t respond. He simply sits on the floor with your brother in his arms, a glassy look to his gaze.

“Dad?” you grunt. “Uh, hello?”

Your You wave a hand in front of his eyes to no avail.

“w-What’s wrong?” you ask. “What the Hell are— wait. Are you sleeping?”

You adopt a frown as you lean over him and your crying brother.

“Sleeping with your eyes open?”

Your father doesn’t move an inch, lying as still as if he were a statue.

“DAD!” you shout, stomping your foot on the floor beside him.

“NANI!?” he shouts.

Your father proceeds to backflip from a sitting position, landing horizontally onto the wall where he perches himself with your brother in his arms.

“Oh, daughter. You have returned.” your father drones, sliding back down to the floor. “Apologies, I was meditating.”

“Yeah, right.” you grunt back.

Your father nods and begins to gently rock your brother Keiji in his arms.

“Where’s mom?” you ask.

“Sleeping, I am attempting to give her a break from our son.” your father mutters while continuing to rock Keiji. “Are you hungry? I can make you breakfast, or maybe some tea?"

A part of you wonders if your father knows anything about cooking in a kitchen, and fears he might start a fire. Still, his gestures is enough to put a smile on your face.

What does Myon do now?

>Take your brother Keiji from your father and attempt to calm him down?

“Here.” you mutter while extending your arms. “Let me see little Keiji.”

Your father slowly slides down the wall and hands off your little brother into your arms.

>70
>Success!

“Keiji?” you whisper. "Keeeeeiiiiiiji."

Your brother ceases his ear-piercing wailing and begins to blubber, raising his fists in front of his face.

“Look who it is Keiji.” you giggle. “Look who’s home. It’s Myon!”

Your brother opens his eyes wide and stares up at you in fascination. You chuckle as his eyes light up with a glimmer of intelligence, likely his little brain slowly remembering you.

“You’ve been good since I was gone, haven’t you?” you mutter while plopping down onto the floor. “Have you been giving Dad a hard time? Well that’s ok.”

“Hmph!” your father grunts.

You give your father an evil smile as your little brother clams down and nuzzles against your chest.

“Hey, what are you doing?” you chuckle. “I’m not mama.”

As you laugh down at your brother, you spot your father walking over into the kitchen.

“Hey wait.” you call out to him. “You don’t have to make breakfast, just a little tea is fine. I wanna tell you how my mission went.”

Your father looks back to you and silently nods. Soon enough, your brother is dozing off in your arms like old times. You swear he feels a little heavier in your arms compared to when you were home last. You’re beginning to imagine what he’ll look like in a few short years when your father returns to the table with a few cups and a tea kettle.

“The Hell?” you grunt.

You feel your brother stirring at your tiny outburst, forcing you to rock him a little.

“What is wrong Daughter?” your father asks.

Staring in bewilderment, you take in the sight of an ornate tea kettle that appears to be inlaid with gold and ivory. Remembering back to when your father first arrived home, you recall how your mother broke a tea kettle in shock. Your father did promise to buy a new one, but you have to wonder how much money he spent…

“So then, tell me how it went.” your father says while pouring tea.

You give your father more-or-less the same story you gave Kasumi the previous night. Once more you try to put just a tiny bit of embellishment to it all in an attempt to impress your father. To your disappointment, your father is able to maintain his usual straight-face as you tell your tale.

“A mission in the Land of Fire?” your father whispers. “It must have been exhilarating to venture toward a foreign land. There’s always a danger that one might encounter an enemy ninja while away from the homeland.”

Smirking at your father, and hoping to get a stronger reaction out of him, you watch as he sips his tea only to blurt out in excitement—

“I fought the student of one of the Sannin."

Your father’s eyes bulge as he spews tea out of his mouth

“The Legendary Sannin, you fought one of their disciples?!” your father asks.

“Not just that, I killed her!” you exclaim. “Er, or I thought I did… I kind of snapped her neck underwater, but she may or may not have survived somehow. I didn’t stick around to find out, I’d call the odds of her living about 50/50.”

Your father leans closer from across the table, his eyes digging into your with a little more intensity than you’re used to from him.

“Huh?” you grunt. “Are you OK Dad?"

“The pervert or the snake?” your father mutters.

“Uh, what?” you reply

“The kunoichi you fought.” your father whispers. “Was she Jiraiya’s student, or Orochimaru’s?”

You blink back at your father as he awaits your answer.

“I’ve never even heard of a Jiraiya.” you mumble. “This girl was taught by Orochimaru.”

Your father groans and cups his chin.

“I was afraid you’d say that.”

The room falls silent as your father delves into deep thought. It is while staring at him that you remember something fairly important; before coming home, your father had spent seemingly months spying on Konoha. Could it be that your father knows something about this Orochimaru?

Your father had been fairly tight-lipped about his exploits before, but maybe now in light of what you'd done he'd be willing to finally open up a little? Then again, your father could be quite a stubborn man.

“So uh, what’s up with this Orochimaru guy?” you ask while leaning closer. “Juzo-sensei told me he’s kage material.”

Your father sighs

“Yes, he’s definitely a contender for next Hokage once the 3rd Hokage steps down…”

You stare at your father, who isn’t quick to say much else.

“C’mon dad.” you say with a glower. “Don’t just leave me in the dark. What’s up with this Orochimaru guy and his student?”

Staring deeply into him, you ask

“What did you learn when you were in Konoha?”

>45
>Failure

“What I learned while in Konoha, is nothing you need to know right now.” your father mutters. “All you need concern yourself with is that Orochimaru is one of the most powerful Ninja of the Hidden Leaf, and someone you should never engage in battle.”

You sneer at your father as he leans back.

“This guy might try to come for me after what I did to his student.” you hiss. “Don’t you care?”

Your father scowls and clears his throat.

“Myon, If I keep secrets from you then it is only in order to protect you.” your father whispers. “I know little of Orochimaru’s student, and I know little of her connection with Orochimaru. What I do know is that Orochimaru is a vastly powerful individual who works alongside dark forces in Konoha. I don’t ever want to see you mixed up with them…”

“Ugh,” you grunt. “couldn’t you at least tell me what I’m supposed to be looking out for?”

“No.” your father shakes his head. “Simply knowing who and what they are could make you a target. You are NOT ready.”

You’re about to open your mouth to shout at your father, when Keiji’s stirring warns you that he is becoming upset. You sigh in defeat and rock your baby brother a bit more in your arms. Once he calms down, you hear footsteps echo down the hall.

“Your mother is awake.” your father notes.

The door slides open, and a tall woman with beautiful long locks of black hair strides in. She stifles a loud yawn before glancing at you all, her eyes resting on you.

“Myon?” she asks. “Myon-chan!”

Swooping down like a Bird of Prey, your mother wraps you in her arms and squeezes you tight against her bosom.

“My baby-girl is home!”

“Gah!” you cry out. “Hi mom!”

Your brother begins to cry again, but he instantly settles down as your mother accepts him into her arms. With her now present, you found it rather troublesome to continue to press your father for intelligence. If your father was guarded about his secrets with you, then he was doubly so around your mother.

Perhaps you’d have to try another time…

You sit with your mother and father for well over an hour, recounting to her a brief overview of your training and your mission in the Land of Fire. To your amusement, your mother tells you that both Zabuza and Juzo are welcome over for supper whenever they find the time. You’d tell your mother that you doubt they’d take up the offer, but you didn’t want to spoil her mood.

“Hm?!” your father hums, rising to his feet. “Oh, it is simply another messenger.”

“Dooooh.” your mother groans. “I hate when they do that, they’re leaving so many scratches in our house.”

Your father exits the room and almost just as quickly returns with a kunai knife and small little sack.

“Daughter, it appears you’re commissioned payment has arrived.”

Your father drops the sack onto the table in front of you, several golden Ryo spilling out.

“B-rank pay,” your father notes. “enjoy. You earned it."

You look down at the pile of cash in awe; it is perhaps more money than you’ve ever seen before. With you having settled in back home, and with quite a bit of money at your disposal….

What will Myon do now?

You spend another hour or so with your family, time spent mostly fawning over your baby brother and enjoying a small meal prepared by your mother. Growing a little restless, you decide to pay the last remaining member of your family a visit. Or at least the “unofficial" member of your family…

Promising to return later in the evening, you pocket your tiny sack of Ryo and bid your family goodbye as you leave in search of Junko. You take off toward the village, clearing through the countryside at a breakneck pace. Before you know it, you’ve left the quiet countryside for the crowded streets of your home village.

You’re never quite sure where Junko’s permanent lodgings are, as she tends to bounce around here and there. However, you are familiar enough with her usual stomping grounds. Venturing into a somewhat run-down neighborhood filled with thuggish looking men and disreputable looking women, you begin to peek your head into a few different places. Eventually, you find yourself standing in front of a very familiar looking diner…

“Huh.” you mutter. “she couldn’t be back here, not after what happened last time."

You could never forget this diner. This was where you and Junko hung out the night before your Final Exam, the very place where you claimed your first kill. Narrowing your eyes, you push your way past the entrance curtain and look inside.

“Woah.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SM3jgkChV6M

No sooner have you entered do you stand before a crowd of roughly a dozen of some of the biggest, meanest looking cutthroats you’ve ever seen. These men look like they could EAT Ashigaru, especially considering that more than a few of them have the same sharklike teeth you also possess.

“Right.” you grumble. “Dumb of me to come back here of all places.”

As the dreaded juke box in the back booms, you slowly reach for your sword and—

“Lil Sis?”

Your eyes widen as the crowd of thugs step aside, revealing a blonde-haired adolescent wearing a blue oni-mask who appears to be lounging on a chair with her feet up on a table!

“Big Sis!”

Junko hops to her feet, pushing past the miscreants with her arms outstretched.

“Hot damn, look at you girl!” Junko laughs aloud. “Long time no see!”

With a big dumb grin on your face, you swagger over and embrace your friend.

“Good to see you out of a hospital bed!” you exclaim. “How you been?! What’s with… uhhh“

“Huh?”

Junko blinks down at you before looking over her shoulder at the various muscle-heads.

“Oh them?” Junko chuckles. “Those are my boys.”

“Your boys?” you ask. “The Hell is that supposed to mean?”

Junko smirks, putting her arm over your shoulders and gesturing to the place.

“Made myself a little gang in my spare time.” she explains. “Come have a seat, I’ll tell you all about it!"

You take a seat with Junko near the back of the joint, the two of you giddily grinning at one another. You recall that this is in fact the same spot the two of you shared when you hung out before the Final Exam. It feels strange thinking back to that night; it seemed so long ago, yet it was only about two months. It seems like much has changed in such a short time, but one thing clearly remains the same since then.

You and Junko are still friends.

“What the Hell is this about you having a gang?” you chuckle while gesturing to the thugs posturing about the place. “You some kind of crime boss now?”

“Ha!” Junko laughs back. “Just a little something I cooked up in my spare time. Felt like throwing some of my weight around now that I got this!”

Junko casually flicks the headband on her forehead.

“What about you?” Junko asks. “You’re the real big shot now! What’s it like being a student of one of the Seven?!”

You blush a little and rub the back of you neck.

“Its not bad I guess,” you snicker.

“C’mon, don’t be so modest!” Junko shouts.

“Okay, its awesome! I feel stronger than ever!” you laugh.

“Go on!” Junko scoots closer, resting her arms across the table. “Give the deets sis.”

You launch into the story of you training back on the Island of Death, your struggles against the elements while learning killer new techniques from Sensei Juzo. Junko has to stop your story short, just to get up and admire your new scar.

“Damn Myon,” Junko whistles. “This is hardcore.”

You’re positively beaming back at Junko as she steps around the table and taps her fingertips against the Tiger claw mark on your exposed abdomen.

“My training wasn’t nowhere near as rough as that.” Junko mutters. “My sensei, Mei, she’s actually really cool. I’ve been spending a lot of time with her at the Terumi compound. She’s actually not that much older than me, only like 18 years old and already a Jonin.”

“Really?” you ask. “That does sound pretty young.”

“Yeah, its been pretty sweet training under her.” Junko mutters. “Everything’s been pretty sweet since we passed that crazy exam. I kind of have you to thank for that.”

“Huh?” you grunt, furrowing your brow. “Whatchu mean?”

“Well, I was pretty ready to bail on that exam after the first couple minutes.” she mutters. "I wouldn’t have stayed if you didn’t…”

Junko looks away and runs a hand through her long blonde hair

“Thanks lil sis.”

You smile back at her as the two of you fall quiet.

“h-Hey, how bout a round of sake on me?” Junko asks, snapping her fingers at the barman.

“Uh, maybe just a little.” you say. “Hey, I just got paid today. Do you want to go shop a little?”

You reach into your tattered leather jacket and drop your sack of Ryo on the table, the gold tablets spilling out and causing the assembled thugs to guffaw at you.

“Damn!” Junko slurs, her eyes lighting up. “That’s a lot of moolah.”

“Heh, well they ended up paying him for a B-rank mission,” you chuckle. “so I really made out well.”

“A B-rank?” Junko grunts. “How the Hell you get away with that?”

After recounting once again what happened in the Land of Fire over a bowl of sake, you and Junko spill out into the street and casually make your way toward the market place. The streets are fairly crowded and the mist is as thick as ever, although the two of you are able to make it over to the markets in only a few minutes by scaling a few buildings and jumping from roof to roof.

“Shit, you really can’t count on anyone to just die can you?” Junko sneers. “I mean, I probably should have died back at the Final Exam. Kasumi got her freakin neck cut, and Zab took enough Fugu Fish to kill a whale. I’m not surprised one bit if this Anko bitch lives.”

You frown as you and Junko leap off of a rooftop and land into the very midst of a bustling marketplace. It is the middle of the afternoon by now with the sun beginning to redden what little of the sky is visible through the fog.

“Think I’ll buy myself a nice new fan.” Junko muses. “Something stylish… heh, maybe one I can hide a kunai in. What about you?”

“Hmm,” you hum. “I’m not sure yet.”

“You look like you could use a new jacket.” Junko says while tugging your sleeve.

“What? No! I love this jacket!” you protest.

“Yeah, well that tiger really hated it.” Junko snickers.

“Screw you! You wouldn’t get rid of your letterman jacket if a flock of seagulls crapped all over it.” You sneer.

“Hey! This jacket’s vintage!” Junko shoots back, stuffing her hands into her pockets.

Looking about the street, Myon can see a few stalls here and there which cater to all kinds of different crowds. She sees a tailor selling fine kimonos, a smith selling various swords, a merchant with many barrels of sake stacked about, even a rather odd looking mask salesman.

What does Myon seek to buy?

A heavy layer of bandage straps, called Sarashi, can be worn as armor that won't sacrifice mobility. It can help protect Myon from blunt force damage and conceivably also from knives but it won't cover much else aside from her torso.

You spend the next hour or so bouncing from stall to stall. At Junko’s suggestion, the two of you stop by the merchant to peruse his sake selection. Remembering your Sensei-Juzo’s praise for the liquor as a disinfectant and a painkiller, you decide to buy an ceramic drinking-jug that can be wrapped around your arm for convenience sake.

>Sake Jug Obtained!

The purchase of the Sake Jug makes only the tiniest of dents in your finances, and after tasting the merchant’s wares a little with Junko you feel ready to shop some more. You decide to stop by a stall that appears to sell various arms and armor next. You’ve seen many Ninja of the Hidden Mist wear Flak armor vests but you’ve also seen many ninja go without such protection. You’ve always felt that your speed with a blade has been one of your greatest strengths, and thus you decide not to go for anything that seems too heavy or restrictive. After a bit of deliberation, you decide to purchase a set of heavy cotton Sarashi bands.

“Hey Big Sis, come help me put this stuff on.”

>Sarashi Bandages Obtained!

After stepping aside into a changing booth with Junko, you re-emerge into the misty streets with a heavy layer of Sarashi wrapped around your torso. On closer inspection, you realize that your new choice of clothes now covers up your Tiger claw mark scar. However, the Sarashi does feel soft AND offers a little protection so you feel satisfied.

“Yo Lil Sis, check this out.”

You follow after Junko as she walks up to a tailor who appears to have a bit of jewelry and chains strewn about.

“Here, if you insist on wearing that raggedy crap then let’s try to doll it up a little. This way we can make sure it stays on at least…”

Junko purchases a golden chain, and with a little assistance from the tailor she has it attached to your leather jacket

>Leather Jacket may now be worn Bancho style!

Perusing the stalls a bit longer, you catch sight of something that really makes you grin in delight. A swordsmith of some sort can be seen showering his little furnace room with sparks while a vast array of weaponry can be seen on display. A scarred man carrying a club himself can be seen looming over the wares on display, as if daring someone to steal one of the weapons. Walking up and examining each of the wares, you eventually decide to examine a Wakazashi sword. While you have been trained to use kunai knives for whenever you had to get real up close and personal, they never quite feel as natural or effective as swinging about a sword.

“Its a beautiful blade…” you whisper, tracing a finger over its edge. “… I’ll take it!”

By this time, several of the stalls are beginning to close up shop for the evening, but one salesman looks to still be in business. You and Junko approach a mask salesman who wears a somewhat off-putting smile.

“Greetings, I own the Happy Mask Shop. I travel far and wide in search for masks.”

Junko frowns at the man

“Right…” she mutters

“Say, do you make your own masks? I sort of had something special in mind…”

What you envision wearing is a kind of mask similar to Junko’s, something that will cover the lower half of your face and perhaps serve as a gas-mask. Then again, you’ve also always admired Junko’s Oni-style mask and were hoping for something similar. To your surprise, the mask salesman brandishes a mask that eerily matches exactly what you were looking for, while also being painted a dark red that perfectly complements Junko’s blue mask. You excitedly fork reach for your sack of Ryo and open it in front of the salesman, only for him to raise his hand to you.

“I can see that you are young, and have tremendous courage. Take the mask, its yours."

Having gotten rid of some of that money that was burning a hole in your pocket, and feeling a little tired after a long day, you feel about ready to go home and relax.

“Well I’m satisfied.” Junko sighs, stuffing away a new Tanto blade. “Hey, want a cig?”

“Bleh.” you grunt, sticking out your tongue. “You know I don’t like that stuff. Leaves a crappy taste in my mouth.”

“I just bought new ones.” Junko chirps, brandishing a box. “They’re cherry flavored.”

You roll your eyes and begin to walk off down the street with Junko, who lowers her mask to try out her new smokes. As you’re leaving, you spot a stall that’s in the middle of closing that appears to carry apparel for young children. Spotting a tiny stuffed Killer Whale, you suddenly giggle as memories of Juzo-Sensei’s Summoned Companions playing with him come to mind.

“Hey, how much for the orca?”

The salesman groaned, apparently eager to get home, but he shut his mouth as soon as you raised your glistening bag of Ryo up.

“That hat looks cute too. The one with the string.”

“Right away ma’m!”

The merchant seems like he’s trying to bleed you a little with how much he asks, but you don’t care. Nothing is too good for your little Keiji.

>Stuffed Orca and Straw Hat toys Obtained!

With your final purchases made, you don your new red oni mask and begin to walk out of the market place beside Junko. All in all, you’ve been having a blast getting back in touch with your friends and family since returning home and your spirits are higher than ever.

Even so, all your experience and training always leaves you with a nagging feeling that trouble may be just around the corner...

The two of you walk along the street, most people giving the two of you a wide berth. Leaving the marketplace behind, you both begin to walk over a canal across a fairly narrow wooden bridge.

“Wanna grab some sushi?” Junko asks. “All this shopping and drinking makes me hungry."

“Nah, not tonight.” you reply. "I’ve been looking forward to my mom’s cooking for the past two months. You should join us.”

“Ehhhh, I dunno.” Junko mutters.

“Why not? Come on, my mom always makes too much.” you say.

“I don’t know…. huh.” Junko comes to a stop.

You come to a stop as well beside her. The two of you look over at a solitary figure that marches over the bridge towards you both. It looks to be a man in a long tan kimono wearing a red scarf and a large black straw hat that conceals his face.

Strangely, you take in all of that about his appearance before noticing the katana at his side.

“Is that a ninja?” you ask. “I’ve never seen anyone like that before

“Hey!” Junko shouts. “Do we know y—“

The man lifts his head for the briefest of moments and in a flash, you feel your body tense up.

“w-What the Hell?!” Junko stammers.

You gazed into the stranger’s eyes, dark eyes that reminded you of the Mizukage, and suddenly you felt a wave of pressure wash over you from seemingly out of nowhere. You have no idea who, or what, this man is, but you know you’re in danger.

This man looked at you with what you can only describe as a Killing Intent.

“f-Freakin’ Hell!” Junko cries. “Sis, I can’t… move!”

To your horror, you discover that you too have incredible difficulty willing yourself to move so much as an inch! When you realize this, you also see that this man wearing a black hat is slowly walking across the bridge your way!

The floorboards of the rickety wooden bridge groan as your foe comes closer. Flicking his sword an inch out of its sheath, the swordsman lets loose a wicked laugh from beneath his black hat…

>84
>Success!

“Damnit,” you hiss. “I’m not gonna die… like… THIS!”

Groaning, you regain some feeling in your arms and legs and shakily adopt an Iaido draw stance.

“Oh? What is this?” the figure asks while coming to a stop. “You can still move… hahaha! You can still move, even while under my spell. Impressive.”

The figure draws his sword and continues to approach.

“I wonder, just how fast are you? Fast enough to save yourself, or your comrade? Let’s find out.”

You narrow your eyes, ready to give him everything you’ve got as he breaks out into a change!

>90
>Great Success!

“GAAAAAH!” Junko shrieks. “TIGER-OX-TIGER-RAT!"

“What’s?!” the stranger shouts.

“WATER-BULLET-JUTSU!”

You turn your head in time to see Junko rearing back before snapping forward, an extremely pressurized burst of water blasting out of her mouth and jettisoning toward the swordsman! Having already committed himself to a charging slash, and fighting upon a narrow bridge, he has no time at all to dodge! Your enemy is hit dead-on by Junko’s attack, knocking him off his feet and hurtling him across the bridge with enough force to send splinters flying into the air!

“Holy Crap.” you whisper.

“i-I ain’t no one’s bitch.” Junko growls. “Go take your Genjutsu and shove it up your ass!”

“Genjutsu?” you mutter. “You mean he—“

“HAHAHAHAHA!”

Your opponent, having landed onto the stone on the far other end of the bridge, breaks out into a raucous laughter.

“Amazing.” he shouts. “I believe you broke a rib or two with that. I never imagined you’re wills would be so strong.”

Shockingly enough, the enemy manages to rise up to his feet. With his black hat having been blown to the ground beside him, you can see the figure more clearly. He looks to have a long fair face, wavy gray hair, and cold black eyes with tiny red pupils hidden within.

Atop his forehead, is a Kiri-nin headband.

“Yes, either one of you would have made a fine student.” the stranger sighs. “Oh well. With the war so close at hand, I wouldn’t have had enough time to train you children anyway. I’ll be far too busy enjoying myself on the battlefield. Until then, Myon. Junko.”

The stranger picks up his black hat, places it atop his head, and begins to walk away while sheathing his sword. It is at that time, that you feel his Genjutsu ware off completely and you are able to move freely!

What does Myon do now?

>Call out to the stranger, at least demand his name?
>Let him go, he’s trouble whoever he is?
>Try to flag him down, perhaps he might have something worth teaching?
>Charge after him, this battle isn't over!

You know, I can't help but be curious, since this fucker is here, are we going to get more cool bloodthirsty swordsmen?

Battousai The Man Slayer Kenshin perhaps?

I could definitly see room for an interesting sidestory, where Kenshin goes full Manslayer during the 2nd and 3rd Wars, but something happens that makes him go rouge and become the peaceful man the anime is based around.

Myon runs into him, and has to deal with this idol of hers, that was one of the biggest 'heros' Kiri had, only to turn traitor and live out in the middle of nowhere after taking a vow to never kill again.

Hell you could make Shishio Makoto a member of Root or just a regular Konoha Swordsman.

Yeah, this is actually pretty cool.
Imagine someone damaging the mask and seeing that she actually has matching pointy teeth underneath it.

The only quibble I have is that the wrappings cover her abdomen and thus hide her scar.

Having fully regained your senses, you grip your sword and shout—

“Hold on! You can’t just walk away from us! Who the Hell even are you!?

“Oh?” the stranger replies. “Where are my manners? I believe I owe you my name at least. I am Kurogasa, the Black Hat of the Bloody Mist.”

The shadowy figure becomes more and more imperceptible as the mist thickens around him.

“After hearing rumors of the Bloody Four, I simply had to test your might for myself.” Kurogasa chuckles. “I see now that your survival thus far was not just luck. No, you two… you’ll fit right in.”

You slacken your stance, caught off by his reply. The last you hear of Kurogasa before he fades away is his cruel laughter.

“Bah,” Junko grunts. “creep. Why don’t you mind your own business!”

Junko plants her fists into her pockets and shakes her head, a few droplets of water dripping off of her mask.

“Hey, are you ok?” you ask.

“Yeah yeah, I’m good. Just a little pissed.” Junko mutters

You look back at the mist, contemplating exactly what Kurogasa was saying for a moment before placing a hand on Junko’s shoulder.

“Hey, that was pretty cool back there.” you say with a smile. “How’d you know it was a Genjutsu?”

“Eh? Oh, well...” Junko mumbles while rubbing the back of her neck. “I just assumed. You know me, I never like people telling me what to do. I guess when someone tries to barge their way into my head, I just shut em out.”

Junko loosens her blue oni mask and plops a cherry-flavored cigarette into her mouth.

“Besides, I can’t be screwing around and getting spooked when you’re here.” she smirks while lighting up. “You’d be lost without me.”

“Heh,” you smirk back. “yeah right.”

After exhaling a puff of fruity smoke into the mist, Junko sighs and pats you on the back.

“I’m gonna split, ok Lil Sis?” Junko mumbles while walking off. “Too much excitement in one day for me!”

It seems Junko is eager to retire for the evening, and you can’t really blame her after the long day you’ve had.

What does Myon do now?

“Yeah, I think I’ll head home too.” you mutter while suppressing a yawn. “You be safe heading home ok?”

“You too!” Junko chirps.

The two of you walk the rest of the way across the bridge, fist bump each other, and begin to walk your separate ways. You consider asking her one last time to come over and share dinner, but you decide not to pressure her. Instead, you call out through the mist.

“Hey! Let’s have sparring fight tomorrow! I wanna see that Water Bullet Jutsu in action again!”

“Ha! Don’t blame me if I end up breaking one of YOUR ribs next!” Junko chuckles.

You shake your head at her before continuing on through the mist.

Its a rather long and lonely walk back home, night having completely fallen overhead well before you catch sight of your humble little house by the sea. Even so, simply the smell enough of the seasalt on the breeze is enough to put a smile on your face. You’re about to cry out to your family that you’re home when you spot something glinting against a wooden post on your veranda.

“Huh?” you mumble. “It must be another missive from the village."

You frown as you reach out to the kunai knife embedded in the wood and grasp the scroll that lies with it. Stepping inside your home, you idly drop the Kunai knife into a small basket that contains a pile of them from previous ninja-delivered letters and packages.

“Hmph, we really should put those away. Little Keiji could… oh! His toys!”

Padding your tattered jacket, you’re delighted to find that your presents for your little brother were not forgotten in the midst of the chaos. In that respect, you’re glad blood was not shed over Kurogasa; it would have been a shame for you to get blood all over his stuffed animal.

“Welcome home Myon-chan!” your mother exclaims as you walk by the kitchen.

“Hi mom!” you reply, giving her a slight bow.

“Wow.” your mother says. “That’s quite an interesting outfit you have on.”

You chuckle, raising a finger up past your gold chain to tap your red mask.

“Oh this old thing?” you mutter. “Just something I picked out today with my friend.”

Your mother gives you a big smile, but doesn’t say much else.

“Dinner will be ready in just a moment, go relax.”

Nodding at her, you turn away toward your brother’s crib. His eyes light up as you come into his field of vision.

“Got something for you bro.” you whisper. “Summoning-jutsu!”

You whip out the stuffed killer whale and shake it in front of his face

“Surprise! Aaaaaaa—“ you pretend to scream as you push the killer whale down at him in a mock Orca attack.

Your brother giggles back as you play with him for a few minutes before placing his new toy down into his arms, while leaving the tiny straw hat aside for him.

“Good evening Daughter.” your father says, appearing as if from thin air.

“Hey Dad.” you reply, turning to face him with a quick bow.

“I am glad you returned safe and sound… what is that in your hand?” your father asks.

You had nearly forgotten the scroll that was pierced into your home.

“Not sure, I think the village left it for us…” you say as you unfurl it.

“Be careful, it could be a trap.” your father whispers.

You freeze up, yet it is too late as the scroll is already half-open. Sighing, you unfurl the rest of the scroll and read along with your father who steps over to your side.

“I see…” your father drones. “… news from the west.”

“I don’t recognize a lot of these names.” you grunt. “What are they?”

“They are the names of villages and castles supporting Kusagakure, the Village Hidden in the Grass.”

Your father hums while folding his arms over his chest.

“It would seem that the Land of Earth is finally making its move. They are going to try to conquer Kusagakure before making their way to the Land of Fire.”

Your eyes light up as you read the rest of the scroll.

“Its just like the Mizukage said.” your mouth curls into a smile. “That means we’ll be going to war soon!”

“Indeed.” your father mutters. “I believe I will be leaving very soon as well.”

Your father shakes his head, causing you to lose your smile. Something seems to be bothering your old man, but you’re not sure what. Surely he couldn’t be afraid, he was a veteran of the last Shinobi World War. So what is it, you wonder…

“Hey, what’s up?”

You tap your finger against your father, breaking him out of his deep thought.

“Hm?” your father mumbles.

“What’s wrong Dad?” you ask with a frown. “Its not like you at all to get all worried. You’re not…”

“Afraid?” your father suggests. “Yes Daughter, even I can feel fear.”

“But… heh.” you chuckle, finding this all a little absurd. "Why?"

“Kyoji, dear?” your mother calls out from the kitchen.

You watch as the look of frustration on your father’s face blanches into a more solemn stare.

“Yes?” your father grunts. “What is it Emi?”

“Would you like me to make a fresh pot of tea for dinner? Or maybe a little sake?” your mother asks.

“Sake sounds nice, yes.” Your father sighs.

Staring at your father, you watch as his face hardens into its usual cold look of stone.

“Ninja are not the only ones who die. All classes of people know their duty, are ashamed to neglect it, and realize that death is inevitable.” your father drones. "Even so, I fear for your mother and for your brother… and for you.”

You look away from your father, suddenly lacking the strength to meet his gaze.

“I have slain a Clan Elder.” your father grunts. “No one seems to know the truth of Elder Hozuki’s death, but if the truth were to come to light… or if someone else were to attempt something like he tried while you and I are away….”

Now you feel that you truly understand what’s eating away at your old man. You must admit that you had nearly forgotten such troubles over the course of all your training and fighting, but now you can clearly remember how not so long ago you sliced two men in half just several feet from where you now stand. Blood stains your hands, and the blood that stains your father’s hands is that of a Ninja Clansmen.

It is after remembering all this, that you feel a slight pang of guilt.

“f-Father,” you mutter. “something happened on the way home from the village today.”

You launch into the story of what happened between you, Junko, and the Black Hat of the Bloody Mist. When you reveal the name of the assailant, your father’s eyes flash with a different emotion you hardly see from him.

“That lowly animal,” your father mutters. “if I had my way I’d toss his head into the sea as well.”

You glance back at your brother’s crib as he begins to stir, possibly hungry.

“Who the Hell was that guy?” you ask

“Kurogasa is a Jonin Ninja of the Village, and a savage warrior.” your father mutters. "I fought beside him in the last great war. Not many know this, but he has risen high in rank. He is actually a member of the Hunter-Nin corps, one of their best from what I’ve heard.”

“A Hunter-nin?” you ask. “He’s ANBU?!"

Your father nods, walking up to your brother’s crib and patting your brother’s head.

“I’ve seen his kind before. He is in love with battle and bloodshed, and is constantly seeking stronger opponents to fight against. He makes such a great hunter of ninja, because he only lives for the next kill.”

Sighing, your father looks back at you over his shoulder.

“He is not the only one. I believe I would have become like him as well, had I not met your mother…”

This is a great deal for you to take in. Todays’ earlier exhaustion and stress seem nothing in comparison to what your father has just revealed. Now you begin to wrack your brain for a solution, an answer as to what can be done to protect your home while you and your father go off to fight…

What does Myon do?

>You could plead with Lord Mizukage, and ask that he spare some guards to watch over your family?

“Isn’t there anyone we can turn to for help?” you ask.

“I have few allies, few that I can trust with a matter like this.” your father grumbles.

You cup your chin and consider your options. Junko had a whole gang under her control, and all of them looked to be no stranger to violence. You doubt they’d prove much of a threat against rival ninja, but when Elder Hozuki attacked your home he only used common street thugs.

Still, there may be an even better option. A way to give your mother and brother their very own ninja bodyguard...

“I can ask my friend Kaguya to help.” you say with a smile. “Her family really seems like me a lot. I was speaking with her Clan Patriarch just last night. Maybe we could pay one of them to look after the house for us?”

“The Kaguya clan?” your father asks, recoiling. “Daughter, they are a clan of berserkers. I’m not sure they can be trusted, and even then…”

Planting your fists on your hip, you frown up at him and declare

“Well I trust Kasumi. I know she would never betray me, so I think I’ll talk it over with her later.”

Your father stares at you for several quiet seconds and sighs.

“The two of you do seem to get along well together. The battlefield is often a place where friendships as well as rivalries are born. I’m sure you know the latter well enough, but it is fortunate that the former is also true.”

Smirking, you nod your head as a faint reflection of Anko struggling underwater with you resurfaces in your mind.

“There is a good deal of money hidden away in a special place.” your father whispers. “Enough for a C-Rank mission pay. If a B-Rank is required, then so be it. The family’s safety is worth it.”

You nod your head as your mother calls out from the kitchen.

“Gumbo’s ready! I hope your both hungry! Oh, dear can you bring Keiji-kun over as well?”

Your father reaches into your brother’s crib and lifts the infant into his arms.

“We can talk more on this later, for now let us enjoy this peace…”

Nodding, you watch your father walk off to the kitchen with your brother in his arms. These past two days since arriving home have been a little more exhausting than you imagined. As much as you were hoping to relax, you now realize that you had to make certain the homestead was safe.

Glancing down at the scroll in your hands, you knew war was closer than ever. It was only a matter of time before the Mizukage would send you out on your next mission…

I don't have the plot planned TOO far ahead, but I do have something of a big event planned out in the somewhat near future for Myon and her friends. Something that will mark Kirigakure's true entry into the Third Shinobi World War.

After that, I don't have too much else set in stone. I was considering having a time-skip of sorts but I don't know how long. I was even thinking of letting you guys vote on the length of it.
>>
>>3184136
Interesting, thanks. I like to see how others plan their quests. I know some people basically fly by the seat of their pants, not planning much of anything beyond a very general idea of how the world might play out, whereas others have all the major plot points (or at least potential plot points) written down.

No problem! When I originally started the quest, I really didn't have much else planned beyond the Final Exam. I was trying to keep things as open-ended as possible because I had no idea who would end up living or dying at that exam and how that'd affect things.

I feel like I should keep that same idea in mind, where I shouldn't plan TOO much ahead just in case something crazy happens.
>>
>>3184150
Yeah I get you, you don't want to plan yourself into a hole or railroad shit. Originally when I was mapping out a quest I planned the major plot points and decided that in this world the plot points would happen whether the players are there for them or not.

Wanted to give the players a chance to affect the world and change things but if they ignore this for side stories the world moves on without them and things develop that they might need to deal with later anyway.

“a-And that’s all I have to report sir…”

Scowling, Anko turns her gaze toward the floor for she cannot bear to look her superior in the eye anymore. Feeling as if she might faint, Anko wonders if she could bring herself to tell the truth.

Then the pain in her neck starts to return, and she believes it would be far better to simply drop dead.

“Anko, please calm down. There is no reason for you to be this hard on yourself.”

Anko looks back up to see that the man she was speaking to, the man some call a God of Shinobi, is now standing in front of her with a frown on his face and a wooden pipe in his mouth.

“b-But Lord Hokage, its my fault.” she chokes, a tear streaming down her cheek. “Its all my fault.”

Looking away, Anko lets her tears flow freely while struggling to remain standing.

“That is simply not true.”

Anko's eyes open wide as the Third’s hand falls upon her shoulder. Miraculously, the pain subsides as she feels his warm touch. Simply being this close to him dispels the cold feeling of dread in her heart, and she has to wonder if this might have something to do with that Will of Fire the Third always speaks about.

“The death of the general is regrettable, but had we any idea that he was going to be a legitimate target for enemy ninja then we would not have assigned you as his bodyguard. At least not alone.”

The Third Hokage bends down and raises the white sleeve of his long cloak to dab away at Anko's tears.

“As tragic as this man’s death might be, I am truly happy that you at least returned home alive.”

The Hokage smiles down at Anko, and in spite of it all she cannot help but smile back.

“t-Thank you Lord Hokage.” Anko stammers.

He nods while stepping back and leaning against his wooden desk.

“I think it would be best if we refrained from sending you on another mission just yet.” the Third says. “War will be reaching us soon, and I would feel better knowing you had recovered from your last mission before it started."

The Third Hokage puffs a bit of smoke out of his mouth.

“What am I supposed to do now then?” Anko asks. “Am I—ack!”

Anko waves her hand through the air after choking on some of the smoke.

“Hm? Does it smell that bad?” the Third asks. “I find it rather pleasant. These new leaves are supposedly cherry flavored.”

Anko chuckles at the Third who grins back.

“You know Miss Mitarashi, I can think of someone else who knows how it feels to fail a mission.” The Third mutters while taking out his pipe. “Someone who has had to see people close to him perish in the blink of an eye. Perhaps it would do you good… both of you good, if you spoke to one another and shared your experiences.”

“Oh?” Anko perks up. “Who is that, Lord Hokage?"

“It is someone you should know well.” The Third grins. “He was your sensei after all, and MY student.”

Anko’s eyes widen and her heart skips a beat.

“Orochimaru-sensei."

Ninja get into some pretty heavy shit true, but the more you look at it the more you can't help but question a supposed chunin who both has different bits of high level info AND is skilled enough to take down a clanhead in straight combat, even a retired one. It makes me wonder if dad is actually has a hidden rank or chose a "demotion"

Our dad is Kenshin, except not a ginger.

I mean, Kenshin was...
Well actually weird. He was a swordsman, but NOT a samurai. And depending on how we're defining ninja, he WAS an assassin...

It's not chuni if you actually ARE a ninja assassin who's killed before and the student of one of the best swordsmen in the world and one of four survivors of a bloodbath graduation

Pfft, whatever helps you sleep at night

He's right, though. You can't really be chuuni if you're not running around blabbing about dark powers and being the progeny of an angel and demon. The jacket might be a bit eccentric.
