Nakamura Eiji looks away while taking a sip of his coffee milk. The lobby is quiet save for the buzz of the fluorescent light above, and the tick of the clock on the wall.

You are pretty sure you have shown no indication to him about the upcoming confession. Nor do you know anyone who will tell him about the plan. Maybe Iwata Riho would? She herself has declared that she wants to win the harem bowl. Eliminating competition, perhaps?

What should you do next?

You grin as you duck out of the lobby, but you couldn’t help the grimace you have once Eiji is out of sight.
You expected this outcome somewhat before hand. It doesn’t really matter what his answer would be, as what would be important is how Ryou handles this…

But why is he so sure that his answer would be ‘no’? Is there really no convincing him to say otherwise?

You look out of one of the open windows. The giant silhouette of Jigokuyama looms over you and the ryokan like a shadow. You are somewhat reminded of the legend, the traveller and the demon. You see the various overhangs of the face of the mountain.

“How did Hanazawa put it again…?”

Morning arrives soon enough. The senseis corral the sleepy students into files as you prepare to trek around Jigokuyama’s base.

“We’d be hiking, but the reports say that there may be a good chance of rain,” said the guide.
“But don’t worry! There’s still a lot to do at the base and with the natural springs and streams of the mountain. Now group yourselves into partners.”

“Again…?” The class rep said whilst yawning.

Whoever you will pair with will be with you for the rest of the day. Your partner and dialog choices would dictate the actions that can be done in tonight’s Test of Courage.

I can see a number of ways this can go wrong no matter who we pick. I can explain it, but I don't want BSG to get any ideas. The question here is 'who do you all think has the potential to wreck things the least badly?, or will cause trouble we can recover from the easiest?'

You go up to Ryou and tap her on the shoulder.
“Wanna partner up, class rep?”

She stretches before answering. Is she not a morning person?
“Sure, Ken-kun…*yawn*...”
“Didn’t get any sleep last night?”
Ryou looks annoyed and looks away with a pouted lip.
“How could I? Today’s…”
Confession time. Though she wouldn’t be confessing til much later in the evening, it seems the nerves are already getting to her now.

Rei pairs with Fumi and Eiji, the odd one out, goes away to pair with one of the others.

“Now you and your partner will remain for the rest of the day. No complaints!” The guide screams over the megaphone as some of the students groan.

“We want to make full use of this day and stopping every second will just be a waste of time. Now prepare yourselves and we’ll start the trek!”

The trek involved walking down a narrow stream flowing through the base of Jigokuyama. Some of the students take off their shoes and wade in the warm-hot water of the spring. The guide speaks facts about the place from afar, but no one seems to be listening.

You hop from rock to rock while the class rep wades through the water. Even the diligent Ryou is not paying that much attention to the guide, and instead enjoying herself.

“Jump down here, Ken-kun, the temperature’s nice!”
Seeing Ryou play in the water reminds you of just why she’s touted as one of the top two beauties of Koh Highschool.
“I might later.”
“Hmph! Lame. Are you an old man or something?”
“Er…”

She splashes you with some water while giggling.
“Come on, come on~”

You sigh out and start taking off your shoes.
“Yes! You’re such a slowpoke, Ken-kun.”

You dip your toes in. The water is at a good temp, not too cold as to give chills, but not hot enough that playing around is uncomfortable. You slosh your way in, making sure to fold your jogging pants first.

“See? Wasn’t too bad was it?”
“The stones are digging into my soles.”
“You’re just too sensitive~”
“Who’re you calling sensitive?!”
“See! That’s what I’m talking abou-- Hey!”

You interrupt her by splashing her with water. Ryou grins menacingly as she positions herself in the water.
“You don’t know what you just started, my friend.”

She splashes you with a wave enough to soak all your clothes. The class rep then stands up and shouts.
“Water fight!”

The whole class breaks into chaos. The senseis try and calm down the kids, and the guide is going off on the megaphone. But everyone’s having too much fun splashing around, despite the water being warmer than usual, and the wind still chilly because of spring.

Obviously, you and the class rep get a scolding from the sensei. While everyone is drying their clothes, you and Ryou sit by the side of the stream getting screamed at.

When the sensei finally leaves, Ryou giggles.
“You’re awfully chipper,” you say.
“Well, it was worth it.”
“Good. Did it calm you down somewhat?”

Ryou smiles as she wrings off her hair.
“Yeah. It helped. Thanks, Ken-kun.”
“I didn’t really do anything though?”
“No. You have no idea how much you’ve been helping me all this time. I’m really glad to have you as a friend.”

You smile and rub her head.
“It’s nothing, class rep.”
“Knock that off, Ken-kun!”
“Hahaha.”

You pull away and Ryou continues drying herself off.

“I hope everything goes well tonight.”

You should probably say something about that.

“...Well, my offer still stands. Just be prepared for any scenario. I’m with you in this til the end.”

She grins, her wet hair glistening in the sun.
“Ok. Look out for me when it happens, okay?”

The trek continued on through the forests on the base of Jigokuyama, with discussions toward the geological makeup of the mountain and the types of animals that live there. The trip took the whole entire day, and by the time you got back to the inn, the sun is already setting.

But none of the students are tired. All of them are carefully excited about one thing.

The test of courage.

You still haven’t figured out how to pair Ryou with Eiji. But just as you were thinking that, you spy a lock of silver hair among the sea of brown and black.

Kobayashi Mariko is in charge of the lots tonight. She could probably do some flubbing to pair the two, but then that would require bribing her.

“And just how much does it take to bribe an ojou…”

I think we need to be cautious about the repurcussions of Eiji rejecting Hikaru here. I mean obviously if he doesn't want to be with her it would be a mistake to force it, but she strikes me as the kind of person to do something drastic after the rejection, and with the legend...
Maybe we should outright tell her? She'll probably find out later that we knew anyway.
