Lastly, I will use the same thread until page nine / ten so be sure to pin us!

>Rules?
-Prompts that are more in depth have a better chance of succeeding. Example: you have a better chance of success if you provide an argument as to why the monster shouldn't eat you then if you simply say "convince him not to eat you".
-Prompts have to make sense in continuity to the story. Example: characters who are established pacifists wont start murdering randomly for exp.
-minimal meta/power gaming
-minimal backpedaling
-Im always in the /qtg/ so please put critiques there

The further you get from your gilded cage the better you feel, with every step you feel more and more confident in your decision. As you hug the shadows and shimmy along the walls you start to notice a change in the type of guard you see. The iron giants that followed you around and caged you were so pinpoint and precise that you were able to walk through the clockwork without fear after you mapped them out. But the smaller men that casually guard the none important areas of the fortress are much harder to predict. They look and stand in places they have no business looking and standing. In some ways, they are harder to confidently move past. (18 : success) Your worrying in misplaced as you weave from one shadow to the next. It doesn’t take long to arrive at the building they took Jackson into. Finding an inconspicuous looking window, you ''stealthfully'' poke your head in to find it empty. soon after, your body follows.

The hard part would normally be finding Jackson in such a large building. But free from the outside smog, you can now SMELL him, he is CLOSE . You place your ear to the room's door and listen for any guards that may be patrolling. Hearing nothing you step out into the corridors and follow the smell. There are a few guards moving around too and fro but the building and the rooms are empty during the night. Some places seem to have guards stationed in front of them, such as the room you know to be Jeraldo's office. Moving closer and closer towards the scent you almost bump into a patrol, you try going back the other way but before you realize it you are in the middle of a guard change. Blocked on both sides by approaching foot steps you dive under a small table supporting a lantern. The group of guards meet dead in front of it to chat. Squeezing yourself into a ball you pray they don't see you.
>>
[guard 1]: Hey
[guard 2]: Hey, quit night?
[guard 3]: Of course, same as every night.
[guard 2]: Im not so sure, cant shake the feeling of someone watching me
[guard 1]: Its probably the crows, where did they all come from?
[guard 2]: I bet they are here for that witch
[guard 3]: Don't say that out loud, she is an 'honoured guest'
You wonder if they are talking about you
[guard 2]: They can call her whatever they want, she gives me the creeps. The guy that found her says she has the strength of a troll.
[guard 3]: don’t believe everything you hear
[guard 2]: The boys they got guarding her confirmed it, It took all of them to restrain her.
[guard 1]: I just hope it doesn’t disrupt the harvest festival...
They continue talking for another minute before saying their goodbyes and passing you by. When they are gone you get out from the table and let yourself stretch out. Their words are disturbing, you are not a witch... right?

Eventually you find the room, unfortunately the room is guarded by two men. They don't look so tough, but you worry about your state of mind. You don’t want to accidentally kill again, so you devise a new plan. Entering an empty room nearby, you decide to try and exit out the window and make your way into the room from the outside. Looking out onto the landscape you see the drop is a long one, the window faces right out the fortress and down a steep cliff face emptying out into farmland. But only five windows down is Jackson... Taking a deep breath you take a hold of the wall and swing yourself out the window! The upside is that at least no one can see you shimmying along the wall but it still is dangerous work, so you take it slow.
Eventually you get close to the window of the room that supposedly houses Jackson, unfortunately it doesn’t seem like there is anywhere good for you to place your hands. So you fling yourself over to the window. After sailing about two feet through the air you grab hold of the windowsill and the weight of your body is almost too much to hold. One of your hands slip and you find yourself dangling by one hand. [STR 3] But you manage to hold on, soon you pull yourself up with one arm, and with some effort roll into the room. The room is dark save for one candle burning brightly in the dark. Looking around you spot Jackson himself! Sitting up in a bed! The sudden sight of him makes you jump. In a whisper you try talking with him “J-Jack heeeya, sorry about before i-” . But you soon realize he is actually sleeping. What kind of man sleeps sitting up you wonder? Examining him you notice he now sports a large band aid over the spot that you had bit him, adding itself to his already impressive arsenal of scars. As you move closer to him and take a seat on a stool beside his bed, you notice the look on his face... It is... serene? From the moment you saw Jackson without his helmet you knew him to look tired. His eyes were bloodshot with dark bags hanging off them, he looked pale and feverish but now. He looks at peace, a side of Jackson you have never seen before. In fact you have never actually seen the man sleep.

He looks so peaceful that you just hate to wake him, but this was sort of a one way trip. You wish you could have a nights sleep as comfortable as this, every day you wake up with a headache. Perhaps the damage you did to Jackson wasn’t as bad as you had worked yourself up to believe. I mean whats a little bite to a warrior as strong as Jackson? You feel better just thinking about it, yes everything will work out once you get a chance to talk to him. Before waking up Jackson you check the door to find it locked. Placing your ear to the door reveals that the two guards are still l stationed outside. So you silently place a chair to lodge the door closed in case someone tries to come in. Examining the rest of the room you find that the window and door are the only way in or out. As for hiding places, the only good spot seems to be under Jackson's bed. But on the flip side it is a pretty big bed, it wouldn’t be a bad hiding place at all, assuming no one gets on all fours and takes a look under you could hide here just fine.

Pacing around the room a bit more you practice what youre going to say to Jackson when he wakes up. You go down every route you can imagine. What to do if he is mad, what to do if he is happy, what to do if he asks this, or that, and what to say if he reacts in this or that way. Eventually the frantic pacing makes you dizzy enough to sit down. To hell with it, just wake him up and let come what may.

Not wanting to touch him and possibly startle him you whisper his name ”Jackson”; no response. You try again a few times “Jackson, Jackson, Jackson, Jackson” but he doesn’t react at all. You get right up to his ear and as loudly as you can, without alerting the guards, you try on last time to call his name “JACKSON”. But alas, sleeping beauty will not wake. From then on you try several other methods, such as blowing air into his ear and poking his face with your pencil. You really work him over with the eraser end of your pencil that he almost tips over. But he doesn’t wake up damn it!!! At wits end you take his face into your hands and give him a good shake “what the hell Jackson? Why wont you wake up???” (insight = 0). You suddenly feel sleepy, so very sleepy, the fire that burned in you once you found Jackson suddenly seems drained. You almost collapse on top of him but manage to pull yourself back to recline in the chair. Feeling slightly dizzy now, you look back at Jackson to find his expression has changed. But he still doesn’t wake up.

The relaxed look on Jackson is now long gone, replaced with a look of a man in deep pain. He shakes and sweat drips down his forehead, and you can hear the sound of his teeth grinding against each other in his mouth. You wonder if he is suddenly having a nightmare, but its all the more reason to wake him up! Having tried to wake him gently you now turn to much more drastic measures. Reaching into your bag you pull out your waterskin and aim it at his face. Giving it a squeeze the cold water shoots out at him, no reaction. Feeling frustrated you climb onto the bed to get a better grip on Jackson. You take his head into your hands and give him a shake, its all you can do to not start yelling at him. But he still wont wake up. The frustration builds and you climb right on top of him. Taking a seat on his legs, you grab him by the shirt and start giving his entire body a shake. When he continues to be unresponsive you back hand him across the face. In a loud whisper you start talking at him ”wake up Jackson, damn it! This was sort of a one way heroics kind of plan you need to wake the fuck up already!”. As the bed starts to creek from you man handling Jackson's unconscious body you decide another slap across the face is called for here. (17: Minor Fail) The movement and whispers from the guards outside force you to stop your activitys. Your frustration is reaching a boiling point, but its only to mask the guilt you feel. You don't know if your bite is what knocked out Jackson or if the man has been poisoned. But it all started with you...

You lean forward and rest your forehead on Jackson's shoulder, you almost cry. You are not sure how exactly you feel for Jackson but you sure as hell don’t want him to die. Letting the guards outside settle you simply sit and wait. You can feel Jackson's heart pounding in his chest, its rhythmic beats help ease your troubled mind. At least he IS alive, that’s something right? After giving it enough time you accept the fact that Jackson wont wake with normal methods. Slowly getting off him you are careful not to make the bed creek again. Walking over to the window you take a look outside and guesstimate the drop. Your rope will take you down the length of the castle but you still need a long way to go if you want to climb down the cliff face afterwards. You wonder if you should try and find Mary, but you really don't know where to even start looking for here. Looking back to Jackson you start to wonder if it is right to leave him behind? What if he is in danger? Would he leave you behind? So intrenched in your planning that you almost don’t notice the heat and smoke have dissipated. You again can smell fresh cold air.

Try to getback to Mary or our room, she can help us by distracting the guards so we can go back, if we don't know where she is we can sniff her out like we did jackson, or even Nat's room if that doesn't work. It is still early in the night and we have to try.

We put our chips in coming here and it didn't pay off, if we escape we are doomed to be on the run, at least now we know he is here and we can try to wake him up another way or seek him out tomorrow. Do not leave the castle yet, the festival is only tomorrow and if we leave now we will have to escape the city since every guard will be looking for us, don't fool yourselves into thinking we can just be fooling around town if we escape.
>>
>>3156910

>>
>>3156836
We gambled on this working out & it failed (we didn't setup any contingents for a plan B). Are safest bet know if we want to survive this is to either find a way to sneak back into are room (Very unlikely considering this was planned out by us as a one way trip. Besides with all the witch talk were reaching the ass end of are time limit for a possible pyre if J doesn't come to bat for us when he wakes up), solve the Jackson problem here & know (we can't do >>3156910
b/c theirs no way we'd be able to find that & then get back in the castle in a single night. Whole fortress town would be in a red alert looking for us once they find out Kae the "witch" is missing in a few hours) or we skedaddle out to bum fuck who knows again.

Know, before we make any more rash decisions can we 1st do a thorough (no lewd stando is currently not needed) check on J.'s condition. For all we know he can be exhausted do to his wounds & simply sedated with medication. After this Kae should look around the room for anything valuable (Not loot more related to the state of his gear or any notes left by anybody who came in earlier, to give us a clearer idea to what happened to him while he was out for some fresh air) Finally if we plan on moving out it's a safeish bet to make that Kae could carry J. with her given her previously remarked strength by the guards. Regardless Kaes fucked if we don't solve this right know.

Or if anybody else is still in camp fukkuJack.Rage. We can totally just smother him with a pillow 1st...no?

Pretty sure killing him now would put us in a far worse situation than anything else.

I also think we've checked him pretty thoroughly already.

Not sure what other options we have, we did gamble it all on Jackson and there really was no way for us to know he'd be zonked out this hard. I guess we could just chill in his room until he wakes up or someone checks on him.
>>
>>3157403
>>3157426
I feel more confortable with this, we can chill out in his room and try to reach a different outcome, going out right now will leave us in a bad spot

The qm did say that under the bad was a really good hiding spot if we needed it.

I can change to hiding under the bed then.

Also, we still haven't tried tha kiss.

Maybe as an ultra last resort if we feel the day is coming about and we will have to escape.

With Jackson refusing to get up you start to mull over your options, you can A: escape back into town and seek out Ratko or B: Try to sneak back into your room. Both options seem absolutely terrible honestly, the consequences for both are too high. The easy solution would just be having Jackson wake up! Still undecided on your next action you decide to at least make Jackson more comfortable. Seeing him twitching and sweating makes you feel kinda guilty since he looked so peaceful before you started having away at him. Placing your hand on his forehead you can feel a fever rising. Taking a seat next to his again you pull out a cloth and start dabbing the sweat and water off his face. To top things off you also try to lift Jackson and lay him down properly, but he is much to heavy for you. For some reason you thought he would be easy to lift, you have been feeling... stronger? But it seems like it must have been in your mind, because Jackson is a heavy man and simply lifting him is not an option. Instead you just sort of pull his legs until he lays down like a normal person. After you sit back down next to him and watch him for a while. Seeing him reminds you of your uncle's last moments on this earth, you were powerless to help then and you are powerless now.

Thinking of your uncle takes you back to your childhood, when he would bring books from town to read to you. This is how you eventually learned to read and write. You remember your uncle would mostly bring you stories about heroes slaying monsters and rescuing princesses. He would always say things like “see that princess? Look how proper and reserved she is! Maybe you should give it a try...”, but you never listened. The life of the adventurer always seemed far more interesting then waiting around to be rescued. And whats the point of all that “well to do” stuff in the forest anyway? But you digress, the reason your thoughts lingered on these stories is because you start to recall on story in particular. In it, an enchanted sleeping princess was awoken by getting a, as your uncle put it, “platonic kiss on the cheek Kae, the adventurer kissed her on the cheek. Thats all that happened, seriously, stop asking so many questions. Ya know, she only let him do it because she is a hussy Kae, don’t go around kissing boys liek this hussy, or letting them kiss you! If you do you'll get pregnant. Stay away from the BOYS Kae! Im your uncle, I obviously don’t count!”. Hmmm, now that you think about it you never got a chance to reread that book when you were older, in fact you’re pretty sure he burned it. Anyway, the point is perhaps the answer to this riddle is an adventurer's kiss? You are an adventurer now right? Sure you are! You are Kae the adventurer, everyone calls you that!
>>
But the theory is much much harder then the application of said theory. There is just so many angles to consider. I mean you are going to have to KISS Jackson, it doesn’t get more complicated then that! Just thinking about it causes your sweating to eclipse Jackson's fevered sweats. Soon you start to look much worse then he does. On one hand he is a princess in distress and it is your duty, as an adventurer, to rescue him. But on the flip side if you kiss him you may actually get pregnant. Youre not sure your ready for kids, you have so much of the world to still see! Pacing around the room to buy time you start to look for anything valuable that you may have missed. Unfortunately the search leaves you empty handed, you have to tackle this problem head on. Sitting back down next to him your hero's heart urges you to do the right thing and KISS THE BOY. But your uncle screams at you form the back of your mind to STAY AWAY FROM THE BOYS KAE. As your face gets closer and closer to Jackson's cheek you start to turn reader and reader. In a last second flash of insight you decide to pull out a handkerchief and place it over Jackson's face. Feeling protected , you give Action Jackson the smallest peck on the cheek through the handkerchief before immediately withdrawing yourself into the corner of the room and washing your lips out with your remaining water. Taking a peak over at Jack, you see he is completely unfazed and remains asleep. ”J-JERK!”, you cant help but feel insulted somehow. You also hope that you are not going to be a mother.

Being unable to handle your embarrassment, you quickly tie the rope around Jackson's bed leg and toss it out the window. Circumstance has made a decision for you as you follow the rope out and descend downwards. The only place you want to be now is as far from Jackson as possible and that means into the town and away from the fortress!

The downside is we still have to find a way to wake him up.

[19: great success] dangling several hundred feet in the air may scare the layman, but as an experienced climber the height makes no difference whatso ever, be it ten feet or ten thousand its all the same. One hand over the other little by little you descend downwards. Reaching the window below you enter the room and give your rope two tugs to bring it back down. Finding a fresh anchor you again throw the rope out the window and descend even further. Without much effort you scale as far as your rope can take you. The rest of the way is a free climb on the steep cliff side. Stopping for a moment to remove your gloves, the hard calluses on your fingers give you excellent grip, again, little by little you go down, down, down. In under an hour you are already near the bottom. Just in time too, as it starts raining...

Walking through the town you find it empty. The hard rain has driven even the drunks to find shelter, leaving you on your own. You try calculating how much time you have until they discover you missing, if Mary gives you leeway like before you guesstimate about nine hours before they come to serve you a late breakfast. You have no long term plan but escaping into the open plains that surround the fortress is probably a bad idea, your only real option for “escape out of town” is to maybe make a run for it north to the forest and hope you can outrun them on foot while they ride on horseback.

Eventually you make it to your destination, “the kings hand” inn. This is the place where all this latest craziness began with Loki, you find it strange to be back here so soon after being told not to return. Ratko offered to talk with you on the day of the harvest festival, and technically thats today. Scouting around the perimeter you find it has been closed for a while, but you can still see a drunk sprawled out on a table inside sleeping. A faint light seems to be coming from the kitchen, this is a good sign. If Ratko went home, which would be expected, you would be in a pickle since you don't know where he lives. You continue scouting around until you find the backdoor. Giving the knob a slow turn you are surprised to find it unlocked and easily accessible. Silently moving through the corridors and past the sleeping drunk towards the light you start to smell... oil? Peeking into the kitchen you see the object of your search, Ratko! He doesnt seem to notice you and is busying himself with frying some eggs in two o'clock in the morning. Unfortunately he has his back to you and that opens up a whole new can of worms. How do you get his attention without startling him??? Ever socially awkward, you’re not sure what to do. You consider taking a seat behind him and simply waiting as long as it takes for him to notice you.

>what do?
>(as this is probably a “talking” section, ill make several small updates tomorrow until we finish speaking with Ratko. Please tune in for it.)

Ask him how we can wake Jackson up.

>>Knock on the wall, making our presence known

well, as for talking, our main two points are to figure out a way to wake up Jackson and to learn more about what happened to us.
I say we start asking about how to wake him up since I feel it's a less dangerous subject

You stand and watch him for a while hopping to be noticed. Ratko simply continues breaking one egg after the other and frying them on a skillet. You count eight in total, the tiny fragile eggs are eclipsed by his massive hands, yet he handles them so delicately . He breaks them on the edge of the skillet and pours the contents out without spilling a drop. You wonder if he plans to eat all of them himself, he is indeed a massive man but thats a lot of eggs. You wonder why he is eating so late? What is he even doing here? Does he live here? All these questions will have to wait, because you are here to get help with Jackson and you really don’t have time to waste! After wasting another ten minutes you finally decide to give the doorway a knock. Other then making bird noises its the best thing you can come up with.

You give the door frame a rap and it causes Ratko to jump slightly, he almost drops the skillet onto the floor. He quickly turns around and starts scanning behind him and failing to see you standing only a few feet in front of him. You can hear him feverishly sniffing at the air as he looks right through you. A little shocked you look down at yourself to see that you are indeed still corporal. ”Do not hid from Ratko, is bad idea. Come, show yourself” he says as he starts to step towards you with a hand reaching in front of him. You wonder if he has gone blind or something in the few days you haven’t seen him. In your last meeting he looked directly at you with no issue. You open your mouth, and as start to speak Ratko freezes in place and attempts to triangulate your position from the noise “Ratko, its me, Kae. You said to meet you on the day of the harvest festival! Thats today technically sorry if im early or...” . You allow Ratko's arm to touch you, he quickly takes holds of you in both hands to pulls you closer to himself. ”you will stand still” he says sternly, but his grip is soft and none intrusive. He brings his face closer to yours and starts to give you several sniffs. [bushmen] You remember Jackson doing something like this once, is this some kind of greeting you wonder? You try to return the greeting by sniffing at him as well, you cant really smell anything but the eggs cooking on the stove.

Eventually he seems satisfied and releases you. Taking a step back he feigns looking at you but his gaze simply looks past you. Ratko's next words confuse you “You are make mistake, we have never met” . ”What? We met five days ago! Don't you remember? You said we are alike and that im not allowed to return to this tavern and um... you gave me a note one of the guards left for me in the morning! You said you could help me if I wanted to know more” . Ratko starts to scratch his chin and thinks for a moment, he gives another two sniffs in your direction. His reaction so far is not so good ”I tell woman not to return yes, but you are not her. Ratko tell her to leave and nothing else. Who are you? Why are you here?” . Desperate you try to ask him for help with Jackson, he is sleeping and you can't seem to wake him up. Ratko know nothing about this, He is simple cook please you must leave

Explain to Ratko that we are indeed the same Kae by showing him the note, telling him that we smell different due being bathed & sober over the week instead being filthy/hungover (from weeks of travel when we 1st entered the town) & that we desperately need his help due to our possession/ time restraint. If this goes over well we can then explain are dire situation & ramp up of occult fuckery (burning sky, murder of crows, nightmares, & strength boosts)

Show him the note and explain we are the same woman, tell him that he told us to look for him to know more and that is what we need now, strange things have started to happen and on top of that we don't know how to help our friend, we have little time to fo this and get back so we ask him to please remember us.

This.

Tell him about the bill Loki left with us and how we were suposed to go to the fort to let him know its us.

Tell him that something happened the next night from that and that many other things are happening and that we will explain it all to him, and tell him that if he knows about any way to help our friend after that we would really like it.

Ratko gently, but firmly, starts to push you out the door of his kitchen. But you refuse to leave quietly, there must be some kind of misunderstanding here. Wedging your hands and feet into the door frame like a cat avoiding a bath you are hard to remove. “Ratko I AM that girl! What are you talking about??? Im even wearing the same clothing as before! . ”It is time for you to go yes? Ratko seems reluctant to really use the necessary force to push you out of his kitchen, but if you keep being this troublesome he may eventually choose to do so. “Please, you’re the only one who can help me! I have been having strange visions, of fire and smoke and all the crows! its me Ratko. I-I just had a bath since we last saw each other!”. You’re not sure if the talk about visions helped or the part about the bath but Ratko has finally stopped trying to usher you out. Standing over you he gives you another sniff ”It is not the smell of journey that is missing, tell me more about the fire...”

You use this chance to slip past him and place yourself deeper in the kitchen, Ratko once again seems to have lost you as he tries scanning the room for your new position. Only finding you again when you speak. ”I was smelling it all day today I thought there was a massive fire but no one else seemed to notice it. For a while I could even feel it, licking at my skin. Am I crazy? What is happening to me?” . Ratko now watches you with curiosity, at least he watches where he thinks you are ”you are not crazy, Ratko sees the fire too; It burns all around him even now. Maybe you are this woman maybe you are not. Why have you come?” . You scan the room and don't see any fire at all except for the eggs that are starting to burn. But you forget all about that and jump back to the matter at hand, Jackson, and again ask him if he can help you. ”Once upon a time Ratko was a great warrior, he was not a healer. There is nothing Ratko can do for your friend, maybe he took a hard hit to the head or maybe he is poisoned. How should Ratko know?” . Your heart sinks, you really don't know what you were expecting. You even tell Ratko that you may have bit Jackson while possibly possessed but that doesn’t help either. “You tried biting, have you tried kissing? Ratko laughs. You cant tell if Ratko truly doesn’t know or if he is just refusing to help. You ask him about the visions, the fire, the headaches, and everything else you can remember. [insight:0 = fail] Ratko interrupts you finally with a wave of his hand and gives you an umbrella answer to all of your questions: ”Maybe once upon a time you were this woman who Ratko choose to trust.” he places his finger to his head ”maybe in here you are the same” then on his arm ”and out here you are the same' then finally he places his finger on his chest ”but here, you are not the same. Ratko will not share the secrets he has learned with you stranger . Suddenly Ratko seems very imposing as his face darkens, his shadow seems to stretch along the walls and towards you like a great bear ”But I will give you this final advice, run from here as quickly as you can. Now at the end the gods have abandoned you, one cannot see what is to come without them. You get the feeling this is his final warning to get out of his kitchen, but you still have learned NOTHING.

Leave feeling angry and betrayed, why did he said he would help when he didn't, why did he brought you here? You put yourself in danger, you put Mary in danger. JACKSON IS IN DANGER! AND THIS IS WHAT HE HAS FOR YOU? NOTHING BUT USELESS CRIPTIC ADVICES OF DOOM YOU ARE NEVER GOING TO FOLLOW SINCE YOU WON'T LEAVE THOSE YOU CARE BEHIND? HOW DARE HE DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS?!?!

Go back to the keep, this useless blind oaf has made us put everything at risk.

Oh, that's nice, I support this.

Maybe stronk witch Kae will come back.

I just realized we could mention that we lost the visions the moment we touched Jackson and that we won't leave him behind like that, but fuck this dude.
>>

Welp, before heading out with are tail between are legs we should at least make the attempt for a CHA roll (I know are buff isn't going 2 do shit considering he's blind but still). Kae should say "Your eggs are burning...." (hopefully diffuse his attitude a lit bit) then "Your my last hope is there anything that can be done to fix this! "

This is the end of the thread. Im afraid there wont be a new one until Thursday. I started school about two weeks ago and im still having trouble managing my time. But my plan is to be updating 4 times a week thursday-sunday in the future.

This is a good time to ask meta questions and have meta discussions. Earlier this week I made this >>3166785, but it took some time to do which reduced the number or updates. Are you guys ok with stuff like that or would you prefer faster updates? When I was doing Dark elf quest I was able to put out several updates in a day sometimes, but on the flip side I didn't draw anything most of the time. How would you feel about a system like that?

A good mix of the two would be appreciated overall. Maybe do faster single updates when were role playing through lulls in the story (not necessarily when were safe just when it slowed down for a moment/taking a breathe0r) & those slower big ones when something more complex/intense is occurring. I think you did a really good job mixing the 2 in this thread so something similar should be fine in the future.

while I was on hiatus I would sometimes write one shot quests that are mostly text based here and on other sites. Dark elf quest was one such small adventure.
