Alright anons, get ready for a cluster fuck and a half as I QM this monstrosity.

Bam. Here's your deck. You all can use Google to read up on the cards. https://pastebin.com/raw/hk5HGKST

A bit of context before we start.
>This is an AU, mainly because having OP characters running around and having adventures for themselves is annoying to write in. Plus it's been an eons since I've seen the older series, I'd likely write the characters 'wrong'.

>We'll he hitting off around the time GX would. So there are duel academies, no synchro, no abc-xyz and definitely no Pendufaggots.

>Events will differ from the show. This'll usually be because I forgot the timeline.

Alright.
Everyone settled in?

----

Duel Monsters has grown a fair amount since the day Yugi Moto became the King of Games. It's influence spread far and wide across the globe with politicians and heck even royalty joining in on the action.

... Of course this demand bumped up the price of cards significantly. You miss the days where a five card pack cost as little as $3.15.. Now they sell as little as 50 bucks a pop.. It's not unheard of for militias to be raised to protect some of the more valuable cards. SWATs are called in to protect a 'lucky winner' or to handle hostage situations related to this childre's card game.

Suffice to say, if you get big at the game.. You get big.

And that's what you plan on doing. Becoming big. Regardless of your reasons, the amount of influence and wealth you'd earn if you succeed would be quite something for a country bumpkin such as yourself.

You're finally 15, of age to apply for high school and you have your eyes set on the Duel Academy. Or perhaps a Duel Community College.. Considering your family worked pastures, your allowance was never too great. You'd have to wait months to buy a new pack, even one of the cheaper ones. As such your collection of cards is rather limited and your deck is crudely built.
Ah well, you'll be able to go part time soon enough - Your deck shouldn't be a problem for too long.

Back to the present though.
Today is the only chance you'll get this year to make it into the Duel Academy - Today they're hosting their entrance examinations. One written exam along with several dueling practicals.

Out of curiostiy.. How well do you think you did on the written exam?

>roll 1d100. Best of 3.

Besides you, after leaving the examination room and returning to the lonny, sits a sobbing boy not much older than yourself.

>Console the kid.
>Why the hell should you care about the competition? Ignore him the best you can.

>Some people are trying to focus here.

"Oi kid." He doesn't look up. "Some people are trying to focus here, you sniveling isn't fair on them."

He doesn't respond although his groaning and sniveling seems to have subsided. Thank god.
You get an appreciative nod from another applicant seated nearby but that's all. You spend the rest of your wait in an awkward silence between a bunch of antisocial kids and a broken wreck beside you.

Your group number is called out and you head off the Arena for the practical examination. There an assistaint explains that you'll be competing against a current student within the school. A single match will be held, the aim is to use strategy, chains, combos and brute force to fight the enemy. Each turn you are graded on your performance and points are tallied at the end. Therefore you don't necessarily need to win although that'll earn you a ton of points, especially if it's a one sided victory.

The arena itself is seperated into small spaces for dueling. As such several duels can take place at the same time, reducing the time taken to assess every applicant. Above there's a seating area littered with teenagers wearing blues, reds and yellows. Current students looking for potential or just to encourage their friends...

You're called up, and you step inside one of the dueling rooms. On the other end is a silent, noticeably round boy clad in Ra yellow. He nods at you. Cleary nobody here is in the mood to chat. You can dig it.

You both prepare your disks for a duel. Then in unison you activate your disks.

>It's time to duel.

---
Now for the nitty gritty. You all are going to be playing some Yu-Gi-Oh! No, seriously you are.
I'll be relaying what the opponent does along with your cards and all that jazz.. but it'll be up to all of you anons to play this chaotic game.

Don't forget to google the cards!

"I summon in face-down defence position." You explain to your fellow duelist. "And I set two cards face down in the spell & trap card zone and then end my turn."

No nods at you and proceeds with his own turn.

>Draw phase. He draws a card.
>Main phase 1.
"I activate the spell card 'Degenerate Circuit'" he mutters, placing a face-up card into his spell zone. A hologram fizzles into existence in front of him.

"By paying 500 Life Points in each of my standby phases, all monsters that would be returned to the duelist's hand from the field are instead removed from play."

This isn't good. You remember that several of your cards return the your hand from the field, no doubt your enemy has several kinds of cards that'll force this...

Although you are unable to counter this spell card, you can activate Chain Detonation if we so wished.

Alright anon, I was just making sure. No need to get your knickers in a twist.

---

Your monster is flipped over and Hyper Hammerhead's attack continues.
Due to your monster having a DEF of 2100, your opponent loses 600 Life points.

Hyper Hammerhead's ability activates, as it did not destroy your Renge during battle it is returned to your hand.. Or it should have been if not for Degenerate Circuit, Ragne is instead removed from play.

The boy ends his turn, your draw phase begins.

>Drew 'Lucky Iron Axe'

While contemplating your next turn, you look up to your quiet opponent. He hasn't spoken much this duel, perhaps he's not one for smalltalk.

Mermails? I hadn't thought about it but I guess it's possible.

>>

*its

I hate this dangfangled technobobbly contraption and its uneditable autocorrect
>>
>>3145013
I meant like, go fish. It's like Uno but you ask the person if they have X card and if they do they have to give the player their card. If not they say "go fish" and draw a card from the deck.

Also while I can understand not liking Links and Pendulums, what's the problem with Synchros and XYZs? I know they're not "time appropriate" for a GX time line but they're still taught in later duel schools like Leo Duel School and where ever the Tops in 5Ds are taught. Plus they're like, SUPER easy to understand, with Synchros being addition and XYZs just being "have X number of X level monsters".

Who hurt you OP?

and I feel your pain. I'm phone posting RIGHT NOW cause 4chan thinks I'm IP spamming just cause I finally got FIOS installed
>>
>>3145021
>Who hurt you OP?
Syrus. I could never beat that bastard in duel academy and it still haunts me.

Oh no I don't hate Synchros or XYZ, I was playing that up. They won't be in the rp because it wouldn't be timeline appropriate. That's all there is to it anon.

>Go fish.
Never seen anyone play it before. Am I missing out on some crucial social action?
>>
>>3145028
Well of course you can't beat Syrus he has a fucking Cyber Dragon deck while the best everyone else had to work with was first gen D-Heroes. I still say a GX style quest is gonna blow cause of the very limited roster of actually good cards, and personally recommend a more ARC-V approach, where duel schools are a thing but they can have like, faction wars and the cards are all around better.

As for go fish, it and Uno are pretty popular I guess. I still hear people make reference to it. Plus I konda wanna make a snappy character who makes reference to other games like Blackjack and Monopoly. Like we cuck someone with a trap and we're like "Do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars!" Or we pull a top deck and we announce pur "get out of jail free card".

"You got any twos?" You ask, trying to break the ice.

"This is an examination. You should be focussing on your hand." He replies coldly.
Yeesh, some people.

"Sorry, I didn't know your sense of humour was as extinct as that dinosaur you have."
He rolls his eyes in response..
What a fun guy.

"For my Main Phase I summon Great Angus in attack position and equip him with the spell card "Lucky Iron Axe".

>Great Angus ATK +500. Now 2300.

"There doesn't seem to be much meat on your monster. Ah well, appetizers I guess. I attack your one monster with my Great Angus."

Your beast leaps forwards, clamping down of the dinosaur's long neck with its jagged teeth.

>Opponent loses 800 life points. Enemy currently on 6600 Life Points.

"Did you forget about my monster's ability?" Your opponent asks you. He continues without waiting a response. "When Hyper Hammerhead battles a monster which isn't destroyed, that same monster is returned to your hand."
"I-"
"But." He continues, talking over you in a monotone drone as though he's teaching a class on art. "Due to the effect of Degenerate Circuit, your monster is removed from play instead!"

You sigh.

"Then I end my turn" you respond.
He nods.

>Opponent Draw Phase. Opponent draws a card.
>Standby Phase - Loses 500 Life Points due to Degenerate Circuit. Opponent Life Points: 6100.

"Looks like your circuit's defective. It's gonna be the death of you."
He ignores you.

"I summon Hyper Hammerhead in attack position and attack you directly."

I wouldn't be surprised if we end up in Slifer Red cause of our shit deck.

OP I call upon the right of Minor Charatcer that you allow us the barebones of a better deck. I say Minor cause we're sure as shit nit the Main Character. No in all serious do you think this deck is too weak? I was thinking of throwing a few boosters your way after this if you guys need help.

>>3145172
Yeah man, this deck is like, the top deckiest deck ever. Don't get me wrong, there's a few ways to get out of this situation, but only if we draw a certain card. Decks now adays cover all bases cause other decks do the same.

Oh you have backrow removal? I have a hand trap to negate it. You have monster destruction? I can discard a card with Meta-ocalypse to negate your effect. I guess I only bitch cause I'm used to the current meta, but it feels like you're setting us up to fail with very little chance to redeem our self outside of sheer luck later on.

It's worth noting that degenerate circuit only affects monsters, so we don't lose the card or anything. So we could keep it to try and bluff, but if it was actually that good we probably would have used it by now. I guess we might as well keep it to see if he wants to waste removal on it.

Just set Chain Detonation and end your turn, believe in Harpie Girl to protect you against the Two Tribute anti-facedown card that's coming up.

Well, like I said, I expected our progression to be in terms of improving our deck. Hence, the shitty starting deck, to give the most room for improvement and hence progression.

I dunno, if you wanted to give us actual mechanical abilities to use in duels, you could always give us limited uses of the whole influencing-the-next-draw-thing protagonists seem to keep getting, at significant points in the plot. Like once per duel, choose your next draw (but only at a dramatically appropriate point in the game), increasing to twice when we first lose to our nemesis and so on.

Put down decoy dragon? Can we use its ability to summon anything in our deck?
>>
>>3145504
We do have the combo removal in Back to Square One, but it's so damn powerful that we need to keep it.
Especially to discard our level 7 or higher Dragon. Hopefully QM doesn't fuck up and actually picks one that can be special summoned.
>>
>>3145500
I think OP is trying to let us make the character by our actions?
But for real, I think the bad deck is fine to start as long as we don't get fucked over too bad story-wise for bad luck
>>
>>3145509
DO NOT.
Our Graveyard is currently empty and if our opponent decides to attack Decoy Dragon at all then we lost a pretty big combo piece that could've turned the duel around.
It's hella vulnerable. Keep the little tyke there until it's sort of safe to play.
>>
>>3145509
It only targets stuff in the graveyard (where no monsters will go until we get rid of degenerate circuit)
>>
>>3145509
Nah son, Decoy Dragon is for the Graveyard not from the deck.
>>
>>3145509
The targets needs to be in our graveyard first. Back to Square One lets us set that up by discarding it, but then we need to actually draw it first.

Even then, it's not like just summoning one beatstick will instantly win us the duel. And the only valid target I saw when skimming the decklist was Tri-Horned Dragon.
>>
Yo who here thinks a Dragon deck would be boss? We could mill a bunch of lvl7+ Dragons, run 3 Decoys and just fucking decimate the compition.
>>
>>3145504
>deck improvement as progression
More card game anime need to do this. Quests to find and earn stronger cards are where it’s at.

>mechanical abilities
Choosing a specific card is probably a bit much, but narrowing things down a bit might work. Like, maybe as we attune to a specific dueling philosophy and/or archetype certain circumstances let us trigger an ability that make our next draw fall within a certain category (a certain attribute, level, creature type, name, etc.)
>>
>>3145525
I knew it targets the graveyard. Wondering if we have a dragon in our deck it can combo with.
Stall long enough the opposition will implode.
>>
>>3145525
there's the mecha who's p useful. Summon a 2400 beatstick without trobute then straight to the Gy. Pretty good all things considered, we just need to get rid of that fucking degenerate circuit, which is impossible without Twister or Dust Tornado.

I agree woth the other Anons, destiny draws look to be the best addition.
>>
>>3145525
It sounds like it's time for a DESTINY DRAW next turn.
>>3145530
Decoy Dragon is weak, sorry to say. If you blow it up by card effects then the whole "Summon a dragon from a grave" backfires hard.
If we want to make a deck focused on summoning big beaters, then we're gonna need more versatile methods.
>>
>>3145530
MC is poor though. Given how the entire universe seems to revolve around Duel Monsters, level 7 dragons are likely to be expensive. We could build towards it, but we're going to need to explore more budget options first.

>>3145534
>narrowing things down a bit might work
That's probably a better idea. There does need to be progression on that end as well, between 'one in three chance to draw the exact card I need' and 'draw Obelisk from the fucking floor', and narrowing down cards would give OP some room with that.
>>
By the way, funny thing about Degenerate Circuit.
It's not optional and doesn't have a "Destroy if you can't pay" clause. In which case the opponent can easily just die horribly to their own card if we're cruel enough.

...Oh. We're definitely cruel enough.
>>
>>3145534
Card game anime DO do that, the progression just comes as a result of the deck rather than any character development.

COUGH XEZAL COUGH UTOPIA COUGH
>>
>>3145552
Actually nevermind I just re-read upon the actual rulings and it's just auto-destroyed instead.
Why this was never put on the card itself will forever be a mystery to me.
>>
3145500
Dude I wasn't insulting ya, I'm saying I can't think of a way to improve the MC's skills except for the introduction of new cards.

It seems that DESTINY DRAW is a popular idea. I can definitely implement it.

Yep, that's why our deck is so shit. Progression.

Without many options you reset Chain Detonation in the trap zone and end your turn. You don't want to risk losing Decoy Dragon just yet.

Dammit. It's more of a waiting game than anything else at this point.

>Opponent's turn. Opponent loses 500 Life Points. Currently on 3800.

"First I flip my face-down card. Hane-Hane will rise up and with his ability (and with Degenerate Circuit) I remove your monster from play."

>>
>>3145580
>Don't fight it.
Chain Detonation is both a good bluff and if the opponent actually lets Hane-Hane stay on the field like that we can pretty much drop a big shock to their lifepoints.
Of course we're planning to Spin their Big Bad Monster that they're obviously gonna sacrifice Hane-Hane for with Back to Square one, but can't hurt to have a backup plan.

You don't fight it. Instead you let your smoking hot monster be removed before you could ever use her.

So yeah, this is a DESTINY DRAW I guess. Someone suggested that these also needed to progress, as such they have levels. Right now, this destiny draw was very low. This means that instead of being presented with a solution in your face, the solution has to be realised. Also the scale of the draw is deoendent of this level. This destiny draw only serves to help get rid of the Hyper Hammerhead.
>>
>>3145639
Nigga I'll fucking give you a solution.

Set Trap Hole
Activate Back to Square One, target that faggot hammer head then fucking chain both trap hole and chain detonation for payback since Hane Hane's going to fuck us up anyways.

If they don't summon something then we can draw one more combo piece.
If they do draw something big then we can actually use our current destiny draw for a even bigger impact.
Make combustible lemons if life gives you lemons, lemonade doesn't destroy your foes.
>>
>>3145685
As a additional point, even if we do kill the Hammerhead straight away, all we're doing is getting a extra turn that might brick because we lost the potential for Square One to be a combo piece

Why bother wasting money and damaging the earth with fossil fuels when you can ridw a fucking tiger to work? Would everyone have a deck? SHOULD everyone have a deck?

It's like your premise which got me hooked but dialed up to 11

Guess the QM figured out why I was telling people to stall harder, yeah Chain Detonation was pretty much the way to win since it was the final bit of burn once Degen Circuit burnt through the opponent's lifepoints.
It's also basic logic that using Three cards just to take out one monster is extremely suboptimal.
Salty logic aside, you can always drop some plot armor on us. But it might be more interesting if we're NOT admitted into a duel academy simply because of our hotheadedness.

>But it might be more interesting if we're NOT admitted into a duel academy simply because of our hotheadedness.

I've been tinkering with this idea and I do like it. A Duel Monsters Community College has been mentioned before in the anime, else we could go to a normal school. Plus it opens the world up a ton.

Enemy Controller is a RIDICULOUSLY powerful card in a situation like this, but if we want to make the whole turn around thing we need to keep the material for it in hand.

Huh.
I'm surprised they didn't keep Penguin Soldier on the field and still attacked with Hane-Hane though. It's a much higher attack stat and degen circuit does banish ANY monster sent back to the hand, not just the opponent's.
Do they then expect a monster controlling effect for some reason? It's not that common.

No. You still have a god damn chance. Having doubts is sickening. You can stall this son of a gun for another turn at least. The game will likely be settled by your final draw.

"I set a monster face down and end my turn." You say, placing down Decoy Dragon.

>Opponent Draws. Opponent loses 500 Life Point. Opponent's Life Points: 250.

"Then I guess this is the end. Even with a monster in defence position my Penguin Knight has just enough ATK power to end this." Your opponent boasts. "I attack with my Jellyfish."

"I'd hold off on that victory speech, I'm still in this fight. I activate my spell card 'Enemy Controller'. By sacrificing my monster I take control of your Jellyfish for the duration of your turn."

"Fine, you survive for another turn. That won't change anything in the end. It's your turn."

Right.. Everything, I mean everything rides on this next card. You barely passed the written exam with a single percentage over the minimum. The only chance you could get into the Duel Academy is through this duel, accumulating points from either winning or playing well..

"Unlucky for you I trust my cards, I built this deck myself. If I say I'm gonna win with it then I'm serious."

He rolls his eyes. "You can't be certain of that. With what I've seen your deck is subpar in every conceivable way."

"Hey, you've been struggling to defeat me."

"Don't be so arrogant. I lost most of my Life Points from my own card, not from the likes of you."

"Well I hope you're prepared to lose the remainder of your Life Points to the 'likes of me'. DRAW!."

You pull the top card from your deck. It slides seamlessly out of the mechanism holding it in place as you draw it sharply. With a flick of your wrist the card flies into your hand pile.

This is it.
The moments of truth.

You look down at the card you drew, hoping your luck hadn't run out.

I gotta say I don't remember getting in that situation often but I don't think that in official games, cards are just "destroyed" once you can't pay their maintenance cost, IIRC, that's more a gimmick sites like duelling network or duelling nexus are forced to use to avoid fuckery.
>>
>>3147275
Really?

Okay boys and anons. Hearing this I'll offer you all two choices.

>Bluff him and hope to fuck the next card is good, or.
>Allow Degenerate Circuit to kill him.
>>
>>3147284
Out of curiosity are we dueling another kid or a proctor? Cause you say "boy" and stuff but he keeps referring to this as an examination. Is it just two people dueling each other while someone watches?

Cause if so I vote we let him burn himself but explain in the most manic fashion possible that not only were we not even trying but that we knew at the very start of the duel that he'd lose, all we needed to do was stall. Like an ultimate "all according to Keikaku" moment. Manic laugh and all.
>>
>>3147289
We're dueling a current 1st year Ra yellow who's using an examination deck (I.e. a shit tier deck). Adult Examiners are watching the duel from the sidelines.
>>
>>3147284
>Bluff him and hope to fuck the next card is good
I assume you built his deck under the specific assumption that Degenerate Circuit won't actually burn him to death. Doesn't feel like a proper win to me to retroactively change its effect to invalidate that.

We can stall for at least one more turn with Birthright, right?
>>
>>3147296
Oh so the deck was PROVIDED for him? Like he didn't build it himself? Cause if that is the case I still maintain my vote. Just be all like "Bruh your deck is made to fail, so why bother dueling seriously?"
>>
>>3147297
>Will the stall work.
Fuck it, yeah it'll work for one more turn. You'd better hope your next card's a good one.
>>
>>3147284
I don't wanna bullshit you QM, I honestly am not sure on what would happen in that situation.

I'm still salty about it so I do am sure that you will actually lose the duel if you pay more lp than you have but since in my case, I did that to activate an effect of the card rather than as a "requirement" of the card (not sure if it's the correct term, English isn't my first language, sorry) maybe you're right and the card is destroyed instead if its cost can't be met.

Since it says that the cost is mandatory, however, I'd be inclined to think that it would be akin to direct damage and you would thus lose the game.

Anyway, it's up to you to decide in the end since it's your quest and we're playing by GX rules anyway so, hé!
>>
>>3147302
Yeah it's not his personal deck. It's so shit that newbies have a chance considering cards are so expensive in this universe.

No. You can still fucking win this dammit. As long as you make sure he doesn't attack next turn you can draw another card.

You force a not-so-subtle grin onto your face as you look at your worthless hand.

"Looks like this is over."

"..I concur.." he replies back, huh. He responded this time.

"I set a card face down and end my turn."

>Opponent's turn. Drew card. Degenerate Circuit ends and is sent to the graveyard.

The boy pauses, looking at the face-down card.
"I switch Penguin Knight into Defence mode and end my turn."

Holy shit. It worked.

Alright. You can't waste this opportunity. Luck gods, pull your weight else and I'll repay you- I'd make you a shrine!

>Draw Phase.

Scratch that last victory speech you made, it's this turn that'll make or break the duel.

>Card Drawn.

C'mon. Don't fuck me up now universe.

>Drew 'Queen's Knight'.

.. You wonder if the Luck gods would prefer a wooden or metal shrine.

That can wait until after this duel through. Your head needs to stay in the game, if only to mock this lardmouth.

"Man, I sure do love sushi."

"What?"

"I summon 'Queen's Knight' and attack your Jellyfish. Snap, crackle and pop. You're dead."

"Hold on. Wait-"

"Why? Can you counter that?"

"No."

"Then I don't see why I should wait. Initiating attack."

The hologram of your knight flies toward the seafood delicacy. Slicing it in half with her sword, the creature glows yellow and shatters into grains of glowing dust which then disappear.

>Opponent's Life Points: -50.
>Winner: Applicant.

Achievement: Heart of the Fucking Cards: It may have taken several turns more than it should have, but Lady Luck smiled on you during this battle. Blessing you with the perfect card.

You arouse a minute applause from the onlookers, current students and teachers at the school. While your fight wasn't enthralling they still have the courtesy to complement your performance.

You don't get much from your Opponent though, who nods his head at you and briskly walks out of the arena. Fun guy.

With the duel out of the way you're hearded back into the Lounge where you collect your gear, fill out a few sheets and you then leave.

You beat a student of the Duel Academy, even if it wasn't under the best circumstances you still feel proud. Man, your parents age going to freak out.

Probably not gonna happen unless we either luck out or actively quest for an opportunity. We could maybe build one over time though, if everyone can agree on a specific deck list. I wonder if deck recipes are a thing?
>>

Tbh, Gladiator Beasts have only become actually competitive recently with their "Beast Tamer" fusion monster (tho even that isn't true anymore since the new rules they introduced for links makes spamming fusion monsters impossible) , before they were rather meh.

Yeah but think about it, they're totally apropriate for this era. What with their contact fusion and tag outs. Nab ourselves a Secutor, Bestiari, Murmillo and Gyzarius and we'd be golden! Plus they're anime as shit. I can see it now, one of the GBs as our Duel Spirit, telling us to unleash our inner Gladiator, then BOOM, we contact fusion something like Nerokius, who's basically just Acient Gear Golem Lite.
>>
>>3148637

Pegasus' whole goal behind duellist Island was to impress the shareholders of Kaibacorp to conclude the merging of their two companies so it's likely that, after he got killed by Bakura, Kaiba just went on with that deal but to his advantage meaning that he would thus own the rights to Duel Monster.

>Time to shop. A'int no time like the present.
The examinations weren't the only reason you came to the city. Domino City's card shops are better stocked than your local one, there's bound to be more than commons.

If you're lucky you could find some Super Rares..

---
2004 - 15th June - 14:50

It wasn't too difficult locating a card shop, just look for the metal detectors and long queues and you'll find your way.

Ten years ago you could sell Duel Monsters in regular shops without hassle. Sure you can still legally sell the cards but without proper procedures in place they'd be attracting all kinds of crooks and madmen.

At a glance, the card shop is no different from any other high street shop. Then you notice the stanchions, the steel door and that the viewing glass in the shop window is protected by some kind of metallic mesh.

Welcome to the card shops, a home away from home for avid Duelists and the one place you can legally purchase cards.

"Welcome to the 'Collective Cards'. How may I help you today?" asks an Attendant from behind a register, his weary sigh does not go unnoticed.

"Er, hey. I'm looking for a few cards."

He nods at you. "It's not like there's anything else you can do at a card shop. Packs or singles?"

"What?"

"Pac- do you want to buy a pack or a specific card?" he looks down at your attire and continues. "We only sell super rares and above in case you weren't aware."

"Nothing lower."

"Only in packs, sir."

Our Spells and traps are strong outside of the bricky Bamboo Sword combo, might as well play with our strength here.
Alternatively I would suggest buying Garuda, because WIND Attribute is underrated as hell and the effect is surprisingly powerful.
>>
>>3148773
Garuda's effect is debatable when it comes to its usefulness given it requires him to survive until the enemy's endphase which, with his low atk and def, can be pretty hard but a monster that can be special summoned that easily could be useful indeed.

However we don't have enough money to buy both him and a booster so better prioritise the later and keep some money on hand, who knows, it could be useful.

Also you know what I just thought about? It's circa 2004 right? The internet is really coming into its own and there's probably already a ton of message boards about Duel Monsters. With such a huge base of people playing and trading and buying, we should like, "review" cards and packs and pro duels and stuff! Like a Yugi-Tuber, you know? >>
>>3148914
Yeah, but this >>3148880 career path = best career path. Besides, why can't we have more than one, or get started on one early? Have this thing as like a side hustle to attract sponsors so we can buy more cards and support ourself! Rinse, lather, wash, repeat, badabing badaboom!
>>
So what deck were running? Really want see Koa'ki Meiru deck (even if bit striped down to fit power scale) That deck is unforgiving to mistakes.
>>
>>3148982
Thus far we seem to be in a chuuni "all according to Keikau" mood, buying a Spell/Trap card deck. Appearantly we can't afford anything else. I suggest we set up a Duel Monsters-Oriented channel so as to get ourselves a successful side hustle.
>>
>>3148993
This Duel Monster Channel meme for quick cash simply... doesn't fit. At all.
We would need recording equipment, a actual side job. A whole bunch of shit. Even with the argument of this being circa 2004 and you could strike gold it's also a fact that multiple channels simply didn't hit the big leagues at the time.
Not to mention this is all based on IRL Meta knowledge that doesn't necessarily fit into the DM World, and is a horrible HORRIBLE idea from a questing standpoint.
>>
>>3148993
Oh control is nice since it uses lots of cards that can be used further down the line in new decks I guess's It's just that I love the feeling of one miss play and we fail without a chance of recovery of Koa'ko Meiru. That deck really punishes users mistakes could see a deck\cards sold for cheap just for that.
>>
>>3148998
We could borrow recording equipment from the academy! And we could ask around for side jobs for quick cash along with donations from viewers like you! Thank you!

Besides, it's a duel monsters related channel in a world that practically revolves around Duel Monsters! The audience is already there and it's HUGE, ranging from kids with disposable income to adults with regular jobs! We just need to formulate a channel for them to congregate around and voila, instant subscribers! We could even cover duels going on at Duel Academy that're normally covered by TV networks that offer pay per view, but WE record it live for half the price! It'd be like Twitch but with Duel Monster tiddies! DUEL MONSTER TIDDIES MAN!
>>
>>3148998
I mean, it's not that bad an idea.
Getting money will be a super pain in the academy and damn it we need boosters.
Also if we take off It's a good way to get invites to tournaments just based on our fame.
Not like it would even get in the way that much of the quest either.

This.

>>
>>3149207
Save it for the pack opening video obviously.

But all in all I find the idea of selling a single card, regardless of rarity, is just odd. There's a ton of rare vanilla monsters, but they're vanilla. Nothing to justify their being rare other than status. Powerful cards I could understand but selling rare singles just seems weird to me. Better to sell them in packs of threes honestly.

As for the video itself, we could nab some software and edit our own ESPN-esque intro later... oh, could you hold a vote as to what to name our channel? We haven't really agreed tho I'm sticking by KGN (King of Games Network). I'm open to others I just think that one sounds the most professional. Or maybe PDR (Pro-Dueling Reviews)?
>>
>>3149223
Eh, singles aren't that uncommon any cards that are new, useful or iconic will be sold (not so Mutch for 500/500 vanilla with no other support or general usrand stuff tho) so the only thing weird is super rares only because in many cases you need commons and rates to make decks work so having some better ones would make sense.

Too broke for luxuries like cafes right now - gotta save up for our next pack of cards. Maybe we should just get on to opening this pack and mulling over how the new cards might fit into our deck?

"Hey guys, welcome to my unboxing review with Mrs. Domino City 2003.
>>
>>3150869
Yes, exactly.
>>
>>3150863
Same with duel arena as 1 pack opening won't mean anything if we have no other content... My idea is we get friend or 2 then a camera followed up by premision to film and publish analysis of their duels and commentary. Getting that as main content requires just camera which we would need either way and an okay to film at local arena as opposed to burning carh (which we don't have) on packs.
>>
>>3150874
In the end both can help in different ways.
>>
>Wander about.

With only $18 and an unopened pack to your name there really isn't much of a point going to a cafe - instead you decide to explore the city. It's not every day that you can visit the city!

>2004 - 15th June - 15:53

Domino City is buzzing, with tourists, shoppers and crazed duelists roaming the streets. There's really nowhere like it. Who'd have imagined there'd be an entire section in a museum dedicated to Duel Monsters?!
Why is there a water slide within an aquarium? The water's for fish, not humans!

The City is.. so strange, so unfamiliar.

"Come now, place your bets on the victor!" screams a young voice not far off.
I guess some things never change.

Continuing onward the voice becomes louder and more distinct until you turn a corner and its source becomes visible - A girl not much older than you stands on a bench, attempting to attract passerby without much success.

Ah snap, she notices you staring and pounces before you can walk away.

"You there, the generic looking kid."
Bitch I'm one of a kind.
"What's your name kid?"

"Davy.."
"Well Davy, have I got a proposition for you."
Oh boy. This ought to be fun.

She starts to fiddle with her plait. "You see, my friends and I have decided to be pretty generous to this loving city by hosting our own tournament of sorts. Anyone can place a bet and get nearly double back if they win!"

"Right..."

"Only, not many people want to actually bet.. Do you mind watching and putting anything in the pot?"

>"Bitch that's one hack scam you're running."
>"Nobody's gonna vote if you're advertising like that kid."
>To hell with it, go check out the tournament.
>Nope, this has nothing to do with you or your 18 bucks. Just walk away.
>Does the winner get a prize? You up for another contestant?

"It still looks like one.. You don't have any panache and your deal looks shady at best."

"What you need is an announcer, someone who can wow the crowd by telling them what's happening in a stylish manner."

"Ye-"

"And what's better than an announcer who's been accepted into the Duel Academy no less?"

"What's that got to do with anything?"

"Well for one thing it makes this," you start to explain "seem more legit. Having someone from the Duel Academy backing it."

Really ham up the difficulty and the thrill for participants and make the odds SOUND good, when in reality they're actually only good for the people working in the torunament. Plus include a cash prize for the winner and a gimmic or something. Like, if you beat your opponent in 10 turns or less you're entered into a drawing for a rare card or if you sweep the bracket you get yourself a prize regardless. Maybe something like speed dating, where you have to beat the other duelist within 20 turns? Marketting is key and there's one born every minute.

>Ladies and Gentlemen, gather 'round for and sign up now for your chance to participate in the very first ever Domino City Duel Carnival! "Eh... I'd prefer money over charity."

"Fine, then have both."

You grab her wrist and smack a tenner into her open palm before stepping onto the bench your new friend had previously occupied.

"Ladies and Gentlemen," you begin, bellowing your voice across the grounds. Your voice mature for a 15 year old, you only hope that your voice doesn't crack.

"The hell you doin'?" The girl asks.

"Just go with it."
"Now, I ask that you gather 'round for and sign up now for your chance to participate in the very first ever... Domino City Duel Carnival!"

A few heads turn at towards you, although even fewer decide to stop. The majority that do are young children and families clearly wondering what the fuss is about.

Now to really hit it home for the avid duel fans.
"Duels so quick and ruthless, even the most elite duelist will be put through their paces!"

Maybe something for the duelists who enjoy a good challenge.
"Home to our very own special SPEED Dueling! Starting with 4k Life Points and only 20 TURNS TO WIN!!

Aaaand of course, something for the gamblers.
"Local favorites at 4 to 1 odds! Entry fee is only 6 dollars with a HUGE cash prize for the Grand Champion!

Looking around you note that your 'rousing speech' has turned a good number of heads. Enough that six bucks would raise a good profit if most betters lose.

"Place your bets soon folks, this a once in a life time opportunity!"

You step down from the bench and stride back towards the girl who now wears a confused smile on her face.

"Erm, thanks I guess?"

"Thank me after the tournament."

"So you'll be participating?"

"Not in the way you think, I'll be commentating. Just think, you could attract a bigger crowd halfway through the tournament, why stop promoting at the start is what I'm thinking."

"And you're doing this for free?" she asks dubiously.

"Nah, I expect to be compensated for that little display I made." you comment, to which she sighs.

"In any case, for advertising and commentating I request at least 25% of your earnings."

If she was drinking a beverage she'd have spat it out in surprise, that much is clear.

"Twenty-five percent? Just for speaking? Are you mad?"

"I don't see what's the problem."

"Well namely my other friends in this tournament are getting a buck per six."

"Uhuh... How many of you are there?"

"Including me? Five."

>"Fine, I'll take a single buck per every six like everyone else.
>"I'll take less since I'm feeling generous (How much per $6?)
> Nah I want more.

Thunder Dragons?
The whole fusion thing fits the theme of the era, and they have really powerful boss monsters
>>
>>3157253
How powerful? Would they make BS deck for this era or can they be taken care of reasonably?
>>
>>3158593
Saying thunder dragons as they were an old archetype that got an insane amount of support recently.
The fusion bosses, Colossus and Titan, both bring themselves out via Contact Fusion. Former stops the opponent from searching and the latter can pop cards like Dark Armed Dragon. They also receive protection from destruction as long as there are thunder monsters in the grave for them to banish as a cost.

As for power level, it's a bit hard to gauge as it fluctuates depending on the meta. They're popular in the TCG nowadays because they hard counter Sky Strikers and Trickstars, two of the premier meta decks that rely heavily on adding cards to the hand and have a low attack ceiling. Meanwhile they aren't big in the OCG due to their meta not being heavily reliant on adding cards to the hand
>>
>>3158593
It depends heavily if they have access to Batteryman Solar. Otherwise as >>3158736
said, they're a bit dependent on matchup and can get screwed over by non-targeting removals (lol dimensional barrier)

But it still stomps all the protag decks though, unless if shit like Cubics, Chaos Max Turbo, and Super Poly Heroes are fair game
>>

Thunder Dragons? That looks more like a villain/boss deck than something the MC would have at this point. Plus they depend a fuck ton on Batteryman Solar, I could see it working though.

Get you head out of gutter. Besides, she said she's unable to hurt most things 800 attack and all! So me being proud 2500 attack better should be fine. What do you mean it's a trap hole waiting to happen? I am still gonna shank her... (30 seconds later there is a mysterious pile of bones next to her.)

What gutter? It's common knowledge that nobody dates in Yu-Gi-Oh! It's as though every main character is a cuck.

I wonder if the mistreatment of a Traptrix plant could be tried as physical abuse...

Eh, let's not find out as some sucker has to deal with their spirits more than likely. As we know the cute is just a lure for the real predators beneath.

The one time the girl won, she was a duel spirit, so there's actually quite a lot of options if they are incorporated in the story.
>>
>>3161263
Will we keep at GX /pre-synchros cards QM? Tbh, it'd probably be way better if we did because currents archetypes are just way too overpowered when compared to those that existed a decade ago and that would just kill most of the fun of the duels.
>>
>>3161456
I think he will keep it GX power scale wise like cherry picking to make some stuff usable or descarding support if it's too much. Plus nothing beyond fusion in extra deck.
>>
>>3161456
>Will we keep at GX /pre-synchros cards QM?
I started with that plan in mind but everyone's been suggesting post-GX decks so I'm on the fence now.

>>3161437
>The one time the girl won, she was a duel spirit, so there's actually quite a lot of options if they are incorporated in the story.
I'm surprised you can remember a duel like that. Impressive anon.

--

Get your game on was the best opening in the anime. Change my mind.
>>
>>3161456
I hope not because things become really boring that way.
Heroes, Cyber Dragons, Machine Angels, Red Eyes, Blue-Eyes, Dark Magicians, Thunder Dragons, Nepthys, and Dinos really only become powerful decks after the 5D's/Zexal era due to the amount of support they received over the years.

I think the current restriction of no xyz/synchro/pendulum/link era is fine as it is, as the extra deck toolbox is gone and a lot of what would be tier-2 archetypes now have the room to move in and shine.

Sure, there's the Monarchs and Master Peace, but at the same time, those two are very good candidates for a final boss in a narrative standpoint.
>>
>>3161477
As long as you cherry pick stuff that's not broken I don't mind if rarely there shows up some newer card and rarer still newer deck just not full powered.
>>
>>3161483
>>3161477
>>3161456
>>3161526
The one major problem with Yugioh has always been the Toolboxification of the Extra Deck, which started during the Synchro Era and is exemplified by the absolute state that is Rank 4 turbo and the entire Link Era.

Without Synchro, Xyz, and Link, you have essentially removed one of the main power creep factors of the series and allowed a breathing spot for a large variety of archetypes to shine on their own.
Fusions, with the exception of Heroes, really only use the extra deck as a place to house their boss monsters instead of the usual "Bring out a bunch of generic xyz/links to lock the opponent out of the game" or "14 extra deck extenders to bring out a nigh-unkillable omni negate synchro boss monster while drawing 20 cards"
>>
>>3161575
In a way duel links (the game) prove that as such decks like Bujin function ok without their extra deck.
>>
"Fine, I'll take a single buck per every six like everyone else."

"... Alrighty then" the girl states in response, obviously uncomfortable with the agreement but willing to accept it. "You gonna participate as well? I'd be hard narrating and dueling at the same time."

"Nah, I'll stick with crowd control and advertisement. You and your pals have a game plan? Something like split the winnings?" you ask.

"Dude. That should be obvious. Yes." she answers, "Whatever we gain from bets is the real prize of course. We don't have a master scheme or anything, this is just for fun and for a quick buck."

"Just checking Kid, with the way you were promoting I was having a hard time believing you knew what you were doing."

"Shuddup."

--

The turnout is a comfortable figure of eleven contestants - mostly teens and children, as well as a gathering of parents, couples and the occasional onlooker.. This was totally thanks to your brilliant speech although your new accomplices probably wouldn't agree with you.

Well it seems like we've reached the peak for out turnout, at least for the start. You begin with haste.
"Welcome one and all," you begin, jumping back onto a bench as to proclaim the start of the tournament. "Welcome to the very first Domino City Duel Carnival!"
A burst of polite applause can be heard from the adults, a few of the younger contestants whoop and jump.

"I'll be your host...
>Davy."
>Write in a Host name.

"Today we have eleven contestants competing for a grand sum of one hundred dollars~" you hear a few children make oos at the number. "That's right. One of these eleven contestants will be the proud owner of a hundred bill! Fear not if you hope to win something even if you haven't entered. Over there you'll find a manned betting box if you wish to place some odds on who you think will win... Your favourite duelist or your own child, of course they'll be the same person though.

"Because of the odd number of contestants numbers 1, 4, 5, 7 and 10 will be having a match fewer than the six other contestants. The tournament will be a single-round of what we like to call a 'Speed Duel'. Only 4k life points and you must win within 20 rounds, else it becomes sudden death with the first take any amount of life points being the victor!"

"Without much more of your attention taken.. May the tournament begin!"

>Cont.

>>3162074

Duel 1...

"Let's get this party started, I draw." Cries the young contestant, drawing a card.
"First I activate 'Upstart Goblin', I draw and you gain 1000 Life Points!" the girl smiles innocently.
"Then I activate another 'Upstart Goblin'!"

"My.. It seems Contestant 2 is being quite generous this duel, setting Contestant 3's Life Points at 6000 before her first turn!" you exclaim the obvious predicament to the onlooking crowd.

"I then set a card in my magic zone and another in my monster... Now I endy my turny."
'Endy my turny'? Does she think that's cute?

"Fine, my turn then. I draw." Your female companion appears to be taking this duel seriously, regardless that her competition is barely older than a toddler.

"I summon 'Abyss Soldier' and attack your face down monster!"

The little girl flips her monster so it becomes visible to the onlookers. "It's a 'Nimble Momonga'" she states merrily before grabbing her deck. "I gain 1000 Life Points and summon his pals from my deck!"

Two more 'Nimble Momonga' cards appear on the field, afterwards she reshuffles her deck.

"My, not only is it turn two but both competitors have more Life Points than they started with... What an unexpected twist.."

---
Duel 6...

I attack you directly with my first 'Blackland Fire Dragon' knocking your Life Points to 1800! Then with my 'Abaki'! Hello, what's this? You only have 100 Life Points? Not any more! I attack you again with my second 'Blackland Fire Dragon'!"

"Damn.. I mean INCREDIBLE! Number 10 completely decimated his competitor... A child.

---
Duel 9...

"AMAZING! Competitor 11 fused their 'Elemental HERO Neos' and 'Neo-Spacian Grand Mole'-"

"He can't do that! He hasn't used 'Polymerization'!" Cries the competitor.

"Sorry kid, normally you'd be right but this time he summoned 'Elemental HERO Grand Neos'. It's a special case.. I'm also assuming he'll use the cards ability to return your one monster to your hand."

"That's too powerful!"

"Rich kids," you shrug it off. Sure this kid may have a few good cards but that doesn't necessarily mean he'll win. Actually thinking about it why would a kid like him join this tournament anyway? Is this what they call a plot hole?

The Final Duel...

"And now the moment you've all been waiting for... The Finals!"

The crowd has somewhat grown, the families of those who lost were replaced by new faces. Many of whom had bet a buck or two.

"We have our resident duelist, playing with a water deck.. Contestant 3!" Your female friend gives a silent wave to the crowd.

"And we have the touring Hero-type duelist.. Contestant 11!" The older teenager stands and blows a kiss to the crowd, gandering a few chuckles and several complaints of disgust.

"Without much further to do... Let the game start!"

"It's time to Duel!"

---[DUEL START]---
#3 LP: 4000 || #11 LP: 4000

"My turn, I draw!" Exclaims your teammate.

"To start things off Contestant 3 has activated her field spell 'Umi' and summons 'Aquarian Alessa' to the field! She end the turn by placing a card face down!"

"Contestant 11 seems to be starting it safely, setting a monster onto the field and by placing two cards face down." you begin to explain, "Need I remind him that this is a limited turn duel, playing safe may cost him."

"It's Contestant 3's second turn, she seems to be starting it off with a sacrificial summon... I wonder wha-" She places her new monster onto the field.

"It's 'Mobius the Frost Monarch'" She explains to you, interrupting your ever so important commentary. "I can destroy two spell or trap cards when he's summoned."

"Well, thank you for the explanation Contestant..." you sigh and return to addressing the crowd, "Although it's as she says. Contestant 11's Magic Zone is emptied."

The girl begins explaining before you can continue your commentary. "I then follow up by Special Summoning 'Aqua Spirit' by removing from play my 'Aquarian Alessa'." Turning, she sticks her tongue out at you before returning to her opponent. "I attack your face down monster with my 'Mobius' who now has 2600 ATK thanks to 'Umi'."

"Oh it seems that the opponent had 'Solar Flare Dragon' - it's ability won't help in this predicament ladies and gentlemen. And like that Contestant 11's field is emptied!" You shout out, regaining your ability to commentate.

"Contestant 3 attacks 11 directly with her 'Aqua Spirit' of 1800 ATK!" It's only the third turn but it could be over by the fifth!"

#3 LP: 4000 || #11 LP: 2200

"Contestant 11 sets a monster as well as a card in his Magic Zone before ending his turn.. Oh dear, how can he get out of this?!"

"'Mobius the Frost Monarch' attacks the face down card but is countered with a trap!.. 'Sakuretsu Armour'! For those who don't know, this trap destroys the opponent's attacking monster, no questions asked!"

"No problem, I still have my 'Aqua Spirit'." The girl exclaims to you before sending her monster to the Grave. "I guess I attack with my other monster then, seeing as you can't fight back any more."

Once again the Opponent's field is stripped of its cards.

"I then set a monster and end my turn." She states.

"I'm not out of this yet! I'll win this for sure!" the boy draws his next card.

"The Contestant summons an 'Elemental Hero Lady Heat'! Even though it has only 1300 ATK, well thanks to 'Umi' it really has 1100 ATK. He's attacking the face down monster, which turns out to be a 'Treeborn Frog'! With only 300 ATK it's destroyed!"

"It's Number 3's turn again... Although not before 'Elemental Hero Lady Heat's ability activates and she loses 200 Life Points!"

---
#3 LP: 3800 || #11 LP: 2200
---

The girl rolls her eyes. "Ohhh I'm so scarred, I lost 200 Life Points. Yeah well I summon an 'Abyss Soldier' in attack mode and with my 'Aqua Spirit' I'll be taking your one monster. Again."

#3 LP: 3800 || #11 LP: 1500

Then with my 'Abyss Soldier' of 2000 ATK I'll end this duel."

#3 LP: 3800 || #11 LP: -500

---[DUEL END]---

"Well, if that doesn't put the speed in 'Speed Duel' I don't know what does! Thank you everyone who participated, watched and who placed bets. Contestant 3 will collect her prize in a short while. Those who won on their bet please return to the betting box. Other than that I hope you all had a pleasant time and have a great day. This has been your host, signing out."

---

"I'm surprised, I didn't think you'd be any good at dueling." you say to the girl after the crowd disperses, she's busy counting up the earnings from the bets but your comment makes her look up at you.

"Hmm? Oh wow I'm glad you had complete and total trust in me from the very start Davy."

"You're not supposed to trust strangers though."

"I suppose not.. Well anyway here's your cut. One dollar for every six." She pushes a pile of coins and notes your way, although you don't count it there and then it looks to be at least $20. "Oh and here's what I owe you for your promotion." She stand up, grabs your hand and forces a crumpled ten dollar bill into your hand. "I can't take money from a stranger."

"Oh," you stare at the note dubiously. I guess you were expecting to much for an extra tip for your extravagant display. "Well I guess we are strangers?"

"And here's in case I have another brilliant idea." She places another note into you hand, although this time it's a slip of paper rather than a bank note. "That's my number.. and my name. I realised I never introduced myself." She chuckles.

You open the note, sure there seems to be a phone numbe- Wait. You look up. "Your name is Irene?"

"Don't go there. In any case people call me 'Rina'."

"Well, it's nice to finally meet you, Rina."

She smirks. "Nice to meet ya too Dav'"

"Dav'?"

"We'll work on your nickname. In any case what are you gonna do now?"

You look at your watch, it's currently 17:21. Your parents would be expecting you at the train station by 21:00 the latest.

"I'm not sure really, I've still got time to kill before I have to catch a train."

"You don't live here?"

"Nah I'm a country bumpkin, couldn't you tell by my ruggish charm and dashing good looks?"

"Well if you're free, you can always hang with us - that being my group you didn't really talk to during the tournament."

"It's not like I've got anything else planned" you tell her. "Where'd you plan on going?"

"Where any kid worth his salt hangs out."

You nod knowingly. "The abandoned quarry."

"The back-alley skate park.. Dude are you okay?" she asks, her voice carrying a semi-serious tone as though she isn't too sure if you're joking or not.

"Yeah. I guess things really are different here."

"No shit." Rina pockets the remaining cash, "We should head off though. Thank god you're with me, you'd be lost in under a minute."

"As if! If anything I'd probably get there faster."

"You gonna test that theory? My services ain't cheap though, looks like you have 'just enough' though." she rubs her

"Are we heading off or what?"

"Right, of course."

...

"Soooo, Duel Academy?" Rina asks after a silence fell between you.

"Hmm?"

"You said something 'bout it earlier."

"Ah, I'm a student there - I mean I will be."

"The entrance exams were today?"

"You didn't know?"

She sighs, "It's not like this whole city revolves around some academy hidden far, far away."

"Fair point. Haven't you thought of joining?"

"Haven't a need to. I've seen tens of snobs in Blue, if the whole school's like that then I'm fine with the city life."

"Blue? You mean Obelisk?"

"Probably."

Several conversations and hundreds of turns later Rina slows to a halt.

"It's just around the corner, just don't try and prove yourself or anything. That'd make you look like a tool."

"What?"

A voice cuts through the air. "Ey Ri-Ri you made it back! Who's this?"

A younger girl appears from an open ground floor window, her forehead and hair hidden behind a grey beanie.

"Maya. Davy." your companion introduces you both without much effort.

"Yo." You greet Maya. Like any cool anime character your hands remain firmly in your pockets through the ordeal.

"Heya" the kid responds before returning to Rina. "So, Burke wants his share. He's been kicking cans waiting for you."

"Yeah, yeah. I thought he might." Your companion sighs. "We're heading there anyway, tell him we're coming."

The child dashes around a corner without replying. You can only assume she's delivering the message.

"Come on then,"

"Coming, coming."

You turn a corner and the alley opens up into a courtyard of some kind not much larger than the town hall back home. The floor tarmac and walls made from the neigbouring towers of buildings. Sunlight reaches the area only at midday, to provide light two street lamps are set up in separate corners, although several areas are basked in shadows. Several wooden ramps and slopes litter the floor.

"Oi, Rina." Shouts a male voice, the unnatural wavering in his voice suggest he's still going through puberty.

"Don't worry Keytal, I've got your share." Rina pulls a crumpled envelope and shoves it into the grubby fingers of the teen.

He nods, checking the contents before looking up at you.
