Welcome to Starborn Quest

> What’s this?

This is the continuing misadventures of Purps. A woman who has grown from a blank slate amnesiac with no emotions; to the beginnings of a functional killing machine.

> So what happened recently?

After teaming up with our sworn enemy & our lover to kill a hive mind queen - we healed up in the infirmary and did some dreamwalking. Then we went to survival class where our nerdy friend got paralysed by a wyvern. We’re fighting that right now.

> So what can purps do?

Her sheet will be linked after this post.

> What’s the rules?
Dice are modified d20s, best of 3. Crits will overrule both positive and negative, even outside the 3 if I have not yet called the vote.

> What’s our current objective?
Study in this academy until the magical geniuses figure out how to get her a new eye. She lost it fighting a guy who was after you, so it’s only right you help her get it back right?

“Xanadar.” The Sea Shanta grunts in response to his name, “Do you have a plan?” The question is more one of hope than of any expectation, since he’s the only one who can see the creature stalking you. Judging by the little impacts his tail make on the ground, it’s out of his vision once more and before you.

“Magic. Hold it for you?” He offers, sounding as uncertain as someone who growls out words with the texture and smoothness of gravel could, “Or flee once held.”

“Okay, you have magic.” You say to yourself, kneeling and feeling around Cellahad’s bag, “Which means we have to choose whether to fight, run or wait for someone to come and rescue us.” On the paralysed body of the girl you do manage to find the skinning knife she’d brought with her for the lesson. While nothing more than a slightly curved dagger, it’s better than your fists for going up against a creature with paralytic spines.

Probably.

> [PRIDE] Cast your spell. We fight.

> [FRUSTRATION] Take Cella and run after your spell.

> [DETERMINATION] I’ll bait it in, just make sure you take it out.

> [WORRY] Once the spell is up we run.

You’re about to confirm the plan with Xanadar when you’re beset by a barrage of quills, each one fired so low to the ground that your eyes have trouble tracking their flight. While not in danger of keeping up with your speed, it isn’t until you’ve launched yourself in the direction you’ve come from that you realise something horrible.

If you dodged then they would hit Cellahad.

She’s not the largest girl, in height or muscleture or even weight. In fact you’d say that it’s a miracle she has the mass to carry around those dusty books she seems to always have handy if pressed. So a half dozen spines, to an already poisoned tiny girl?

You shudder until you hear a sound akin to a gas lamp shattering. A quick glance over your shoulder show you that Xanadar’s tail wrapped around the girl’s waist and frozen perfectly perpendicular to the ground. Were it not for the sleek look of the silver spines against his dark coloured blubber, you’d never know why he couldn’t move.

With renewed grit you leap at the direction where the foliage seems to ripple with a nonexistent breeze and drive the skinning knife forward, the well sharpened tip gleams in the sun before it seemingly disappears before your eyes with so little resistance it was akin to stabbing water.

You pull a savage smile and twist the blade just as savagely, splashing almost pink blood across the forrest and your face. Unfortunately, as the magic recedes and reveals the white furred form of the wyvern, it is obvious that you’ve score nothing but a minor wound on the creature's side.

A poor trade for an ally.

> [DETERMINATION] Leave knife embedded. Get under it and punch.

> [PRIDE] Minerva’s Lantern.

Deciding that you’ve committed this far already, you smack your palm into the handle of the knife until it slides into the Wyvern's side to the hilt. It growls and flashes teeth that are far too draconian for comfort and its head whips round with unsettlingly flexible neck muscles cracking like a whip. Gritting your teeth and muttering Minerva’s name you grip the knife with two hands like you had borrowed Jo’s greatsword, with savage glee you take your vengeance on the beast in blood; twisting the blade inside the wound as you tear a chunk clean from its flank with a wide downward blow.

The creature’s cries are harsh music to your ears, with a thin smile you watch it’s wings flap in mind rending panic. The somewhat thin and solid looking wings manage to carry it upward onto its hind legs where it springs off from the clearing like some monstrous oversized rabbit, wings and tail minutely adjusting it’s flight path until whatever spell it was under hides it from vision once more.

With such a lovely coating of wyvern blood on your uniform and the ground, you feel like you’ve been somewhat productive today. Even if your new friend got paralysed while keeping one of your other few friends from almost certain death, something came of this class. You fought a different kind of dragonkin without even triggering lantern, nevermind Divine Zen.

Such a thought fills you with pride and dramatically clean the skinning knife off on your skirt while returning to your team, it’d be poor form to whistle a tune; but you feel like a bit of a badass while one of Xanadar’s eyes unblinkingly take in the sight. The fact he can’t even blink does present a new problem; how are you going to get your partners out of here?

> [CURIOSITY] Cellahad must have had an antidote or a book about Wyverns right?

> [PRIDE] Okay, you’ll just remove the spines and perform first aid. Easy.

Making your way back to the group, you hop up onto Xanadar’s rummage around in Cella’s bag while she unblinkingly observes. “Sorry Xanadar. Sorry Cella, but I don’t know much about Wyverns and I need to see if I can find some info.” You talk them through the plan as you pull the huge tome free of the bag, in fact; you’re pretty sure this book should not fit in such a small bag.

And that is the last bit of fun you have, as the book appears to be in Cadalonian. If it was Ghenrisian or Munisian you’d have been fine. In fact, even the sandscript of the North is something you’d be able to fumble your way through.

Instead you’re staring at a bunch of words with far too many js and ys for any sane and civilised language.

Wait, she’s got red hair. She’s not from Cadalon surely?

> [CURIOSITY] Let’s try and see if the word Wyvern is the same in Cadalonian… (Flick through the book)

Without much else to do you take a deep breath and straddle Xanadar’s tail, the limb seemingly not so much as feeling the impact of your weight on top of Cellahad’s. Speaking aloud to inform the others of your intentions you set to work, reaching over the ends of Xanadar’s tail that have wrapped around her sternum in an attempt to get at the quill that has left her paralysed. “Okay, so since I can’t read your book Cellahad, I’m going to remove these quills and hope that this wears off soon.”

Detaching your red cloak from your uniform; you quickly wrap it around your hand four times, drawing on the previous experience of accidentally giving yourself necrotic rot to recall what not to do. You continue speaking while grabbing the silvery white needle that pierced her chest, growing more worried at just how far you’re having to pull the thin needle. “I hope that paralysis wasn’t keeping you two from shock. I swear I need this class because I have no idea how to deal with anything outside of fighting normal people.”

With the quill now removed your eyes narrow at seeing a slowly spreading stain the colour of your eyes begin to spread on her jacket and shirt. In place of proper bandage work all you can do is press your cloak against the wound as tightly as possible, “Sorry Cella. If I’d been reading my books in the hospital I’d probably know what to do right now. You’re probably thinking I’m an idiot.” It’s hard to keep your voice light and away from creepy monotone. This is all about keeping her mind off the gaze, “Hell, you wouldn’t have me all up in your bust if I’d done some studying. So I guess you got lucky huh?” You look to her hoping for some read of her emotional state, but they’re still glazed over and unmoving from the venom.

Unfortunately, you’re kind of limited in your options until Xanadar’s no longer paralysed. The giant amphibian’s powerful tail has her stuck tight and with six quills in him there’s no way he can let her go for you to help further.

> [DETERMINATION] Just brute force his tail uncoiled

> [FRUSTRATION] Just get those quills out of his tail quick.

With time on your assignment running out you’re forced into a somewhat uncomfortable position quite like your awkward seat on the unusually rough hide of the Sea Shanta’s tail. Looking around at the woods, it’s not hard to imagine what or who might be watching you right now. Unlike before there’s birdsong everywhere and you can faintly make out some small rodents scurrying about the earth. Apparently seeking to forage where the wyvern dug furrows in the earth.

So with that noted, you keep talking to Cella and Xanadar, “Alright. One down, one to go.” Unfortunately your light hearted tone has given way to your usual montone, making your bedside manner take a nosedive while you begin gripping the quills piercing Xanadar with your cloak. “Minerva knows what could be watching us, so the quicker we get you both back on your feet the-” There’s a rustle behind you. Followed by five more. The hair on the back of your neck stands up while you ever so slowly free your hands from your cloak and reach for the skinning knife you’ve kept by your ankle.

As soon as your hand grips on the handle you are roughly yanked free of Xanadar’s tail, the whiplash as you are slammed down the ground stealing the air from your lungs. Attempting in vain to rise, you’re left helpless as the grass around you revolts and grow into dark ensnaring vines with glowing white flowers. From your position on the ground you’re breath is stolen once more; Though this time it is from awe rather than trauma.

Canine creatures begin forming from the trees around you mid stride, each one towering over even Xanadar while on all fours. The nearest and largest’s body is comprised entirely of leaves. Each one is perfectly emerald and glimmering with dew aside from a line of glimmering golden leaves from the base of it’s skull down to it’s tail.

The wolf like creature stalks toward Xanadar and Cellahad while it’s pack emerge from the surrounding trees, each one distinct but uniform in one way; all of them are the forest come alive. Even if they display it in different ways, it is apparent that these creatures are as much the woods as the grass that rubs against your back. One of the creatures’ hide is made entirety of bark and branches, while another boasts gleaming grey pebbles and dark blue moss.

And you are pinned to the ground by these vines, bound and trapped while the monsters stalk your friends and circle around you all.

Doing your best to stoke the little flames of excitement you always feel when faced with insurmountable odds, you recall the technique you used in the dreamworld to enter Hona’s glass palace and blink into the air.

Thankfully, you remembered the fact that momentum carried with you upon your last use of th technique, popping into existence five feet off the ground ahead of Xanadar and the greenleaf canine. A ripple goes through its leaves and the creature warily gears itself to pounce or strike while you turn the skinning knife point down midflight.

Your landing brings you into a tense standoff, staring right into the face of nature and the wrath of whatever Fae or Goddess is now trying to assert dominion over the Wyvern’s former territory. The five other creatures silently stalk your group and fan out, leaving your peripheral vision. This creature is the main threat, so you dare not blink or even track it’s compatriots with your eyes.

Redoubling your grip on the skinning knife you bare your teeth slightly while staring into the eyes of the world itself, two pits of darkness that give no hint of their true intent. The creatures all step in, moving in unison to completely surround you all.

A brief temptation to bark or growl comes over you, some kind of communication to let them know you’re not going to be intimidated. But what can you do beyond spread your legs and brace yourself for the inevitable whirl of tree and fang.

“Put. Down the knife girl.” Your teacher says from somewhere behind you. His footsteps deafeningly loud against the uncanny silence of the creatures.

The order takes a long time to process, every instinct of your body refusing to back down until a large green tinged hand squeezes your shoulder tight enough to hurt. “Drop. The Knife.” He repeats, growling.

With a conscious effort you open your hand and let the skinning knife drop to the floor. The instant it’s out of your hand Zar Tan whirls you around, the fury on his face is enough to unsettle even you. A half orc’s strength starts pulling you down while you look upon some kind of creature that drops your jaw.

“Kneel fool.” He hisses, pulling you out from your reverie. Behind him is a beautiful creature of white wood and blue flowers in the vague shape of a woman. Her head is so gentle and eye catching that tearing away your eyes to stare at the ground is a trial in of itself.

From the corner of your eye, you make out the canine creatures moving toward your companions leaving you and Zar Tan kneeling before whatever creature he has brought with him.

After a second or an hour your patience for whatever ritual is being undergone begins to run out. Zar Tan’s companion seemingly having joined the creatures to do something while you’re here just staring at the ground and kneeling like you’re before Minerva herself. “Look, we got ambushed by a-”

“I know.” Your professor grunts, doing his best to keep his distinct voice quiet, “You failed.”

“What?” You hiss in disbelief, “Cella got poisoned by an invisible monster leaving Xanadar and I against it and we failed?

“Yes. You all failed.” He says, “Be-”

You’ve gotten riled up now and turn your gaze upon him to argue further, “That’s bullshit. We managed to reveal it and wound it! If anything we should be commended for-”

He grips your skull and forces your head toward the ground, less than half a foot from it, you’re completely taken by surprise at this, “Be quiet. Before you get noticed by the Dr-”

“Wildfoot.” Someone says, their voice sounding like six or seven speaking in synchronicity with different pitches. “Bring that one to me.”
Zar Tan manages to hide the curse he utters to anyone but you, the orcish sounding like “Ilka Tuk Tak” or something.

“What do I do?” You manage to hiss, as you slowly rise and approach the creature, surprising yourself with the fact you are surprised that more weird shit is happening to you.

“Show respect.” Then as he watches you take your first step he adds, “Don’t trust her.” As quietly as he can.

Approaching the creature, you can see that it’s skin is constantly shifting and reflecting the light in strange ways. Every piece of white barskin is growing and warping depending on how the slight breeze reaches it, shrinking from the cold and seeking out the heat of the area subconsciously. Her eyes glow with the same blue light of the flowering areas of her body and that gaze seems to evaluate you with the experience of centuries.

Ignoring her analysis, you turn your eyes to your friends. All is silent save for the breathing of Xanadar and Cellahad, who seem to be receiving some kind of magical intervention from the wolves who are laying their heads upon their chests. The lumbering shark like creature’s eyes have already starting moving once more, making you idly wonder when you’ll hear his eyes start to blink again.

“You are an abomination.” It says, causing your gaze to whip round and eyes to narrow. But no attack follows the declaration, it’s merely stating a fact. “The cycle is lost to you.”

“Are they going to be alright?” You’re aiming for concerned, but something about your scowling monotone must convey a threat, because rather than answer the Fae decides to raise a palm toward you.

“Their fate isn’t your concern.” The palm blooms into a rainbow of colourful thorns that each drip with so many scents that your nose tingles. “If continuing your pale imitation of life is what you desire. You should do well not to raise the forrest’s ire. With simple answers provide these trees, or your flesh shalt feed the bees.”

Biting bath the urge to laugh and the urge to ask what a bee is, you try to remind yourself that Zar Tan bid you to show respect. Though he also added that you shouldn’t trust her, you manage to neutrally respond; “Is that a promise?”

“Promises? Promises.” She says with hysteria, “What would I do to promise you such grimness? If I am speaking false…” The hand moves closer, “Strike me and witness.”
