“...so then that’s when allll the ducks came!” Lorelei finishes up with a guffaw as you sip at your drink. You’d managed to catch Lorelei free, but Izumi was still at work- however, she got off in about an hour or so, and the two of you figured it wouldn’t be too much to ask to simply wait around in the inside cafe and maybe catch up a bit. Apparently, Lorelei had managed a rather simple job for Prima and Jago, while she was playing behind the scenes- similar to what you’d done for Mono. “I SWEAR, I’d never imagine Jago could scream like that!” It had been...quite something, apparently, despite the fact that the job was supposed to just be a hunt and retrieval mission for some rare and protected monster. “I thought about helping them out, but I figured it’d be a nice little lesson to not get too carried away with the locals, y’know?”

Hello, and welcome back to Magical Girl For Hire Quest!

“At least they were fine,” you opine. “Prima was just showing me some of her new dance moves.”

“Oh yeah! I saw that!” Lori notes. “They’ve been going at it for the last couple days, really. Prima was even practicing during that job. Funny sight to see, but she really got into it! Even when the rangers showed up! Reeeally messed with their heads.” She giggles at the thought, and you have to admit. Some robotic girl in miniature doing breakdance steps while they try to intimidate you? You let out a snort at the idea.

“Although, that does bring up something else,” you segue. “How are YOU doing?”

Lori gets a slightly confused look on her face at that. “Whaddya mean? I’m fine.”

“I mean about the whole...possession thing,” you clarify.

Her face furrows at that. “Ohhh. That. Ehhh...well, the lessons n’ stuff are helping, I gueeeesss. It’s STILL gross, though.” She shivers a bit. “I don’t think THAT’S gonna go away for a while. At this point, yeah, it’s unsettling, but I can deal so long as I don’t think about it too hard. Even SO! Euuuugh, it’s just ICKY going inside someone’s bod in the not-fun way. I keep wanting a hot shower after I’m done.”

“Hm. Yeah, I guess you can’t help that,” you relent. It sounds like she’s probably about as good as she’s going to get for a while. “Has it been helping with anything else?”

“Ugh, it feels like they want everyone there to be one of those zen master types, honestly,” she admits. “I’m thinking hard about bailing.”

>>3125252
“Bailing what?” a new voice asks, and the two of you turn quickly to see not Izumi, as you might’ve been expecting, but young Delilah, who’s nearby with a cup of...tea, smells like. “Sorry for interrupting...but I noticed you both, and...yeah. Do you mind?” Lorelei’s quick to offer a chair before you can protest- not that you really had anything to oppose. “Thank you…” She blinks her baggy eyes a couple of times before settling in.

“No problem,” Lorelei offers easily. “We were just talking about some stuff I’ve been goin’ through.” She seems pretty casual about it. “How’ve you been holdin’ up?”

“It’s been nice. Busy, but nice.” she says, as she takes a long drink.

She’s Izumi’s library coworker, and also a vampire. She was introduced In the same thread we were introduced to Izumi, but she shows up rarely. Owlia got dragged out of the library by her because she tried to stay there for a few days to gather information instead of being a normal person and finding a place to sleep, eat, or take a shower.

Personally, I think the books could be utilized better in our hands, at least until we figure out who or what we brought back with us in the ring, anyway. Or we could give them to the lamb-girl we teach, she seemed to be into commanding subordinates.
>>
>>3125353
Honestly now that we are in the intersection i want to take a look at the manual summoning book we have. Just imagine Miranda being able to use final fantasy summons or even just simple constructs to spy or scout.

“Busy, huh?” you frown. “So, what’s been keeping you up, exactly? You look beat.” Although, honestly, that was probably underselling it a bit…

“Oh, well…” she seems a bit shy about it, all of a sudden. “I guess I can tell you, since we’re supposed to start promoting it soon anyway... we’re working on a donation drive.”

“...wait, a donation drive? Seriously?” Lorelei looks confused- as do you. “Why would you need anything donated HERE of all places?”

“Well!” At that, she lifts her head a bit, some fire returning to her eyes. “S-some people like books, you know? They- they like having the feel of something to hold. Something physical. We- we’ve got a lot of books, but not as many as you’d think. Mostly because, y’know...a lot of people don’t bring back history books or anything.” She lowers her head again. “The director isn’t telling us why, but he’s reaalllly interested in physical books getting donated. We’re supposed to make a plea to all Outgoers, and, uh...we’re supposed to be offering a small payment for any books that are, uh… ‘culturally or historically significant to any mortal dimensions’, I think.”

“Yo, really? How much?” Lorelei leans forward.

“It- it’s not much!” she cautions. “Just from twenty to fifty Small Motes per book!” Drat. That ISN’T much. But...well, it’s something. You can at the least keep an eye out, you suppose.

“No chance at just making copies locally?” Lorelei asks.

Delilah shakes her head. “Nuh-uh. He wants authentic books. Like I said, I don’t get it, but...” she shrugs, and you can’t blame her. "It'll start later, though."

The conversation moves from that to more mundane life- Delilah’s managed to make another friend since you last met her, and they’re doing well otherwise. Before very long, you can see Izumi approaching- in what’s apparently a uniform-mandated plain brown sweater. “Girls, thanks for the wait. Miss Delilah, I appreciate you keeping them company.”

“It- it was fine,” she offers. “They were nice to talk to. But my break’s almost over, so maybe I should go.” She makes her leave quietly, a quick wave goodbye all that she does.

“Sorry about the holdup,” Izumi apologizes. “Although you never did tell me what this is for. Just having a time to ourselves?”

“Actually, I was hoping you guys could come with me to meet someone I met on my last job…” you hint, getting up.

Lorelei raises an eyebrow. “Oh, yeah? You ran into another worker? Where from?”

“Flashpoint,” you answer. “Nothing major, just kinda stumbled across each other. No disputes, though. She came up to me right before the job was over and said she wanted to buy me a drink as thanks for not interfering when I could have.”

“Huh. Sounds magnanimous of you,” Izumi opines.

You just shake your head. “Nah. Just didn’t see any reason that suited me. But I’m not going to turn down a free drink, and it might be worth it to get to know them, all things considered. Come on, we can head to their HQ and see if she’s around there.”

“Cool! Haven’t really been around there, much, anyway,” Lorelei says as she hops up.

“So you’ve been there before?” Izumi asks.

“Eh, just to look around,” she says as you walk off. “You see…”

------------

The Flashpoint HQ, when you get to it has an aesthetic that you can’t quite pin down. At first glance, it doesn’t look like anything special- a large, rectangular building that would seem more like a business building than anything else. Getting inside, though...it reminded you of some sort of gym, or maybe a car dealership showfloor. There are a number of dummy models of various transportation, and a few plaques about various famous Outgoers that’d worked with Flashpoint.

There’s also a lot of racing stripes. Everywhere.

The people themselves seem oddly unhurried, a casual air that wasn’t quite like this when you visited Interdiction, and not there at all when at Dynamic Methods. Before you can wonder how to find the girl in question, you’re quickly approached by a rather large, dark furred minotauress in a form fitting business suit. “Howdy! Kin I help you three?”

“We’re, uh, just here to see a miss Amanda Kane?” you offer as you look up (and up) at the tauress. You’re not quite sure how they do things here, but hopefully it’s not too hard to get to her. “Just- you could say we’re friends.”

“That so!? Good for her, then!” She seems to mean it, her smile bright and cheery. “Well, tell y’all what, I’ll call for her- what’d you say yer name was?”

“Miranda Styles; she’ll recognize me when she sees me.” you hope, at least.

Fortunately, when she approaches the desk- now dressed in a workout tank top and shorts- she seems to recognize you easily enough, her short, raven hair practically bouncing in surprise. “Oh, hey! I, uh, didn’t think you’d show so quick! Was just getting some laps in, y’know?”

“Ah. If you’re busy-” you start, but she quickly cuts you off.

“Nah, nah, it’s fine! These your friends?” You nod. “Well, I’ll treat all of you, no sweat!”

“Yo, Kane!” Looking to the side, you see a short, pudgy fellow with shocks of blond hair sticking up all over who quickly waddles up to you all, and fixes Amanda with a growling stare. He’s dressed in a one-piece racing uniform, and he’s got a classic stopwatch with him, interestingly enough. “Are you about to take off without doing your duty all of a sudden?!”

“Huh?” is Amanda’s erudite reply. “I thought I’d done all my paperwork…”

“Paperwork! No, no, no, no! I’m not talking about your paperwork, I’m talking about what you’re doing for the Inter-division race tomorrow!”

And at once she seems to wilt, affecting an annoyed expression. “...Oh. That. Come on, everyone knows I’m not winning it. And I’m still practicing anyway!”

The small man puffs up. “It’s not a matter of winning, it’s a matter of pride! For you AND the Division!”

Breakdancing little robot girl? I have an idea. Kit her out with guns in all her limbs and she can be trained to be a breakdancing, jinking ball of gun. I see possibilities of being able to take on several opponents on her own.

>>3126340
Question for Handler: How does Miranda's Light Barrier spell anchor itself when cast? To another surface? Local spatial co-ordinates? Could it be anchored to say, her limbs?
>>
>>3127042
I wonder how thin the barrier is. If it can be anchored to limbs and is very thin it could be used as a makeshift sword.
>>
>>3126077
We are not talking about power, we are talking about racing. No idea how Miranda performs in that regard compared to Flashpoint speedsters. That short guy has racing suit on, so it might even be a car race. Besides, since it is supposed to be a fair competetion, powerups and fancy spells would probably be disallowed.
Also character pastebin says Lori is still Rank C.

You’re not a big fan of the idea of interfering in someone else’s affairs when it comes to Outgoer stuff when it doesn’t really involve you, but you can’t deny a bit of curiosity. Fortunately, it’s Lorelei who speaks up first, saving you the trouble of picking your words. “Hey, it’s not like a half a day of practice is gonna ruin her, is it?”

“Like you’d know!” snaps the short man. “This is one of Flashpoint’s biggest internal events! In case you weren’t aware, missy, speed is kind of our deal. That means we have to be able to show that we can get the job done, and get it done FAST. It’s mostly fer sport, but yeah, but that doesn’t mean we should be slacking! So we race! And Top 3 get a lil’ bonus and braggin’ rights. Even beyond that, it’s just good form to try.” He shrugs, his steam cooling off.

“Curious,” Izumi admits. “And this is strictly internal affairs?”

“Yup,” he nods. “So sorry, ladies, but she’s gonna have to take a raincheck on whatever you were gonna get up to. Maybe check back in a few hours!” With that, he turns back to Kane, coming up behind her and physically pushing, much to her consternation. “Hup hup hup! You mighta been joggin’ earlier, but now we need to get ya onto the obstacles!”

“C’mooooon, really?” Kane whines as she’s moved. “I have the worst luck…”

“Obstacles,” you ask, as you step forward. “Just what are you expecting her to do?”

Sighing, the small fellow stops pushing for a moment and turns to fix you with a half-hearted glare. “There’s the flat track, the obstacle course, and the hunting race, and she hasn’t ran through the last two yet! We got work to do, so if you don’t mind…”

> “Right, sorry. We’ll be back later, then.” In the meantime, you can look into your newly gotten gains.

Gah. This is a bit outside of what you think you should be dealing with. “Right, sorry,” you concede. “We’ll be back later, then.” Kane pouts, but says nothing as the little man nods, and resumes his pushing.

“I want to make a joke about him...but it’s beneath me,” Lorelei quips. Izumi just shoots her a look.

“We’ll be back,” you assure. “C’mon, then. In the meantime, there’s a couple other things I wanted to get done- namely getting a bit of loot I managed to acquire looked at, or at least work it out myself.”

“Oooh, you got something?” Lorelei asks as you head out, her attention now entirely taken. “What is it?”

You give it some thought. No matter what you picked, it’d likely take up your attention for a good while. “Well, there’s a few things, but first and foremost…”

“Wonder why it was in a book,” Lorelei asks as you all look at the thing carefully. You’d adjourned to the Outgoer Training Clinic; your own HQ wasn’t quite at the point yet where you could do something like this, and the Clinic at least had private areas that were magic-permeable. “Y’think someone was trying to hide it?”

“Perhaps,” Izumi considers. “Or they may have intended it as a gift. Not quite certain, myself. But the description unnerves me, I must admit.”

You had to agree. Although you accepted the thing, the description of it by the FutureSight made it sound like someone was trapped in there, which in general just rankled you. Either that, or it was an automated construct. You’re really hoping it’s the latter. “We should at the very least see if we can’t get it out. The way I figure it…” You channel a portion of your mana into the ring- it glows briefly, but aside from a flash, nothing happens.

Izumi frowns. “Well. That’s that idea. Unless it might need more…”

“You sure? What if it breaks because of an overload?” Lorelei asks. “I dunno. Might just be me, but I’m immediately thinking ‘blood sacrifice’.” The both of you can only stare at you. She just shrugs. “Hey, just a thought.”

“We’re probably going to have to take it to an expert after all, then…” you mutter. You’d kind of hoped that you wouldn’t have to, if only in order to save some money, but it seems like that’s gonna be unavoidable. There’s little shortage of appraisers, true, but...money. “Well. Time to do some research.” Let’s see, magic jewelry…

Fortunately, it doesn’t take you very long to find someone that seems like they’re a good choice. ‘Luanne’s’ seems to be not too far off, and specializes in various enchanted jewelry. You were never a big wearer of the stuff, yourself, but needs must in this case. Appraisals, fittings, custom craftings, and more. The one drawback was that they were expensive (which you expected), but it should still be within your ability to afford, at least.

It’s not too long until you reach the store, and there’s a gentle chime as you head it. “Just a minute!” a female mechanized voice calls out.

In the meantime, though...you have to admit, the place has a lot of interesting rocks. Most natural, some in various bands...they aren’t quite the crystals that Owlia and Cylica work with, though- there’s a notable difference- namely in size, really. Lorelei at the very least seems enamored, nearly pressing her face to the glass. “These look SO cool…” she gushes.

“Why, thank you!” the voice comes again, and out of a door behind the counter comes a lady dressed in a red, form-fitting dress, her face however being fully masked with a vent grille where her mouth is. It’s fairly clear she’s a cyborg...the four thin, multi-joined arms with 8 fingers each sticking out of her back make that clear.

Her two human (or humanoid) hands clasp in gratitude. “Thank you so much for waiting. May I ask what you might be interested in, today?”

“We were looking to get this appraised,” you mention, showing her the ring. “We understand there’s some sort of presence inside it, but we’re having some difficulty figuring out the trick to getting it out. We’re hoping it’s not some sort of incantation…”

“Ah, I see. Salvage, then?” She looks up at you- you wish you could see her expression, but all you get is yellow optics shining. “I will see what I may be able to do. If you could provide me with some information of its universe of origin, it may help.”

You tell her everything you know about it, and before long she bids you stop, and moves towards the back, promising that ‘this shant take long.’

It’s a full fifteen minutes before she comes back, however, with the sound of drills and various tools being used, as well as incantations in what you’re pretty sure is more than one language. When she does, she’s proudly holding the ring in her hands- which is now slightly darker than it used to be. “Excellent news,” she insists. “I have managed to commune with the ring’s holder. In a limited fashion, but it has informed me of a method of release.”

“How did you manage such?” Izumi asks.

“Trade secret,” is the immediate response. “Now, if you would. It requires an influx of mana, to starts. Then, one must know and call its name, which it gave to me. I will write it down so as to keep it private.” She begins to do so, an old fashioned pen and small slip of paper seemingly coming from nowhere behind her as her extra arms being working. “However, the last requirement, is that it must be worn while doing so.” Any more, I cannot say,” she offers as apology. “Now, if you’ll allow me to discuss the matter of payment…a task such as this proved surprisingly simple, and so I will only charge 10 Large Motes.”

“Ten large for THAT?!” Lorelei yells. “Are you actually serious?”

“Yes,” she says placidly.

“You don’t think that’s a bit much?” Izumi asks.

“No,” she says simply as she holds the ring close. “My fee?”

>Pay her. Might as well.
>See if you can haggle somehow...

>>Pay her. Might as well.
We didn't get a price upfront, we knew she was expensive, and we certainly don't like it when /we/ get stiffed on payment. Next time get an upfront price estimate though.
>>
>>3128774
>>Pay her. Might as well.
...don't tell me the 10 roll result was the cost in Large motes?
>>
>>3128774

>See if you can haggle somehow...

Say...what DO you have for sale? Maybe if we grab some of the stones we can have some of it and work on a price if we buy enough er...jewlery?
>>
>>3128790
>>3128788
I dunno maybe we should see what she has to offer in jewels? Also this price just makes me want to make MORE of oir own gear. Owlia is a saint...
>>
>>3128774
>Pay her. Might as well.
It sucks, but I don't think we're in a good position to barter.

>"Did you know whether the entity would be temporarily or permanently released?"

>Pay her. Might as well.

Also lets squeeze all the information that we can from her.
This also makes me wonder why are our prices so low.

Well...you don’t like it, but you’re not really in any position to haggle. Should’ve remembered to get a quote before you offered, dangit.

Handing the motes over wordlessly (although Lorelei scoffed) and receiving the ring and the note in exchange, you glance to the piece of paper, which has only one word on it.

“Gartoum,” you mutter, glancing at the ring itself. So that’s the name of the creature in here…

“You know you TOTALLY got ripped off, right?” Lorelei mutters as you walk away. “There’s no WAY that costs more than maybe one or two Large, at WORST. Ugh, never going there again.”

“I have to admit, her price for a simple appraisal was...exorbitant, in my opinion,” Izumi agrees. “I wonder if we should perhaps take it up with her superior after we’re done with this…”

“I know I’D have a lot to say about it,” Lorelei mutters.

“We’ll talk about it later,” you say, if mostly to ease their discontent. Although all things considered, this just makes you appreciate your in-house team all the more…

Before long, you’re back at the Clinic, and this time, you’re ready. Wearing the ring, you take a breath. “Alright...Gartoum, come out!” Infusing the ring with more mana, this time, it glows a brilliant black, and smoke starts pouring out, soon pooling heavily on the floor and blanketing it in a dark miasma...which coalseces, drawing up and up into a strange form- humanoid, if only barely. Its at least got some measure of a torso, while its face is nearly non-existent, a single ruby red eye peeking out, and a slit of a toothy smile crossing its face. Its arms and legs are near nonfactors, seemingly reshaping and changing at will. There’s a moment in which there is stillness, before the toothy maw opens, and it speaks.

“Oho! Well, aren’t you a breath of fresh air! Nyhah, I suppose I mean that literally, too!” The thing’s voice is...actually kinda goofy. A high pitched, nasally thing that almost instinctively makes you want to grit your teeth. “It’s been soooooo long since I got stuck in that thing, I nearly LOST it. Not fun, hun, lemme tell you!” It seems to finally coalesce its lower body into something more resembling a small arachnid, tapping its shadowy legs eagerly. “So, ladies! Lemme introduce mySELF!”

“Uhhh…” Izumi blanks out, her face clearly uncertain of how to respond.

Not that he notices as he takes a bow. “Gartoum, THE host with the most, the king supreme, the darkest dealer when it comes to shadow magic, a-thank-you very much! And whooo might I have the pleasure of being my caller? Did you happen to be the one that managed to ring my bell earlier? Pfnyehnyeh, gotta say, that’s one way to wake a guy up!”

“Yooo…” Lorelei says under her breath. As for you…

> You think you have a number of questions. What are they?
>>
Okay, I've got to go, and fair warning, I will NOT be running tomorrow. At least, not really. I may be able to update once with answers to questions, but after that, I'm gone until probably around the 27th/28th. Just an FYI. Hopefully the new year brings new things for me and the quest.

Iunno like maybe I can work more on that interactive thing I was working on before.
>>
>>3128899
Thanks for running.

>>3127042
Answer this question please?

Also, have a good holiday!
>>
>>3128896
Aww shit, we found Sal's long lost brother.

>>3128899
Happy holidays!
>>
>>3128896
What do I get from freeing you?
If it's getting you as a summon, how long is the contract or whatever it is that determines the time that I get you for?
What abilities, skills and knowledge do you have?
>>
>>3128909
Local coordinates. Like, it's put down where she wants to put it down. She can move it if she likes. Could she anchor it to her limbs? Theoretically. If you know what I mean.
>>
>>3128896
...oooooooooof.

>"First off, I'd like to go over your abilities and talents. If you're going to stay in this reality, you need to find some way to earn your keep, and I doubt that anyone remembers who you were back on your plane of reality."
>"What would you say would be your best work, and what would be your biggest mistake?"
>"Any references you could give me, particularly of the summonable sort?"
>>
>>3128896
>Questions
first off, do you know where you are? Why were you in that ring?
>>
>>3128896
Do we even want to tell him our intersection name?
>"Why exactly were you imprisoned in a ring?"
>"King supreme?"
>"What sort of shadow powers do you hold?"
>"You've been taken outside your universe, and you're probably not going back, sorry not sorry" let's neglect to mention how we're probably returning to help out Millie at some point, it's not guaranteed she'd want to summon us anyway.
>>
>>3128942
Oh yeah, add in...

>(nudges Lorelei) "I believe we just found the reason why it cost so much..."
>>
>>3128899
Thanks for running, merry christmas and a happy new year to you!
>>
>>3128942
Add in.
>Does the word "Harbinger" mean anything to you?
We did express some curiosity about that world's history before we left.
I like this guy already. Like a down to earth Sal. According to him, he was a king in the past, so he should had heard about wars, big or small.
>>
>>3128896
>“Uhhh…” Izumi blanks out, her face clearly uncertain of how to respond.
What she said.
So is this entity under our command?
>>
>>3129332
seems like its a genie or djinn of sorts
>>
>>3129441
Not everything that coalesces from smoke is a genie.
>>
>>3129467
what else could it be then?
>>
>>3129470
A corporeally challenged individual.
>>
>>3129470
I dunno, that world had faeries, and centaur, and dark monks as summons, could be any creature from mythology, some kind of specter, a demon, some boggiemonster or whatsit.
>>
>>3129470
Some alchemist's potion experiment gone wrong.
>>
>>3129470
A shoggoth?

Worse, a Scots

Does wearing the ring or other similar artifacts on a mission take one of the equipment slots or take separate special item slot.
>>
>>3139094
We have equipment slots? I thought it was just a risk reward against losing the item and it's value to us, given that we have a bag of holding.
>>
>>3139094
>>3145075
I think he's referring to the clothing slots we set up before missions. The ring won't be "normalized" for a while, so it should be a regular item, not a clothing slot for now.

It's an item for now, not a clothing equip.
