/qst/ - Quests

In the far future, biotechnology advances by leaps and bounds, creating stunning achievements in medical, civil, and military applications. Illness becomes a thing of the past, and genetic modification is as commonplace as cosmetic surgery.

However, like all great advances, unchecked progress and experimentation has led to abuse and corruption. Ultra powerful megacorporations that monopolized the latest biotech have risen to be the great powers of the age, waging secret wars of sabotage, espionage, and deceit to get ahead of each other.

In order to fuel their rampant growth, megacorps develop lethal diseases and viruses, horrific bio-organic abominations, and ever more exotic genetic modifications to both sell to the highest bidder and unleash upon each other.

The rampant proliferation of bioweapons, and the need to contain them, has given rise to a new profession, the BIOWEAPON HUNTER.

You are LEWIS, a Hunter specializing in hunting down biological threats with your T-Doll companion HK!

And just like that, the party was over. A song was sun, a giant Umbrella cake was cut up and distributed among the guests, and Oswell Spencer himself showed up briefly to the party for the benefit of the guests. Though from you remember, Spencer looked like he was asleep through the whole thing. You figure that he didn't think much of the people there supposedly in his honor.

Meanwhile, you were completely wiped out from the events of the party, not only from the general lingering and wandering around, but also the little impromptu job you did for Lucina as a favor to nab an intruder.

Once the festivities officially died down and the guests began to leave and disperse you...

Well, you figured you could at least stay a little bit longer. See if there was anything else to do.

Artya and Hank were among the group to leave first. Looked like Hank finally reached his limit and was largely passed out, and Artya volunteered to get him back home. So you didn't have to worry about them for the moment. Carol had also left, having been booked for other social appointments later tonight. You weren't worried too much about her, either.

As far as you know, both Lucina and Nemo were still at the bar, probably hoping a bit of alcohol will help get them to open up a bit more. There sibling.... rivalry? Coexistence? Whatever it was, certainly cause a lot of pressures in their interactions from what you remembered.

The Boss was apparently still hitting it up with the big boy execs upstairs. Who knew who exceedingly dangerous jobs she was arranging for you now.

All the while, HK stands loyally besides you, keeping a close eye on the guests that begin filtering out the door.

"Come on, let's go check on Lucina and Nemo." You say to HK as you head over to the bar.

"Affirmative." HK nods as she loyally follows you. "I have a query, though."

"Go ahead." You nod as you start heading off.

"Based on my observations of Lucina and Nemo, the two of them don't seem to spend very much time together." HK states. "Which is a contrast to you and your sibling Carol. "

"Yeah, well, I think I mentioned this before, but Lucina and Nemo did not exactly have the most normal of upbringings." You frown.

"Please elaborate." HK continues.

Ah well.... is it really right to talk about this to HK?

"Well, let's just say Lucina and Nemo weren't equal from birth." You say and pause. Actually, out of your little group, NONE of you were really normal at all.

"Is that so?" HK pauses.

"Yeah." You nod. "We didn't know it at first, but Lucina had been... 'modified' by her mom at birth to be perfect in every way. Her DNA was manipulated while still in the womb."

"I see." HK nods. "That would explain her physical prowess without the use of biomodifications."

"And Nemo? Well, she's just all natural born and bred. Not a single altered gene in her." You continue. "Though she apparently inherited her mom's intelligence."

"Of course. She's done very well to keep me maintained." HK nods. "Why exactly were they produced so differently?"

"Really weird parents." You sigh. "Their mom insisted on modifying them at birth, while their dad was against it. When it turned out that she was carrying twins, they agreed on a compromise."

"Then..." HK pauses again. "Then I hypothesize that Nemo suffers from an inferiority complex that affected her personal interactions with Lucina?"

"Bingo." You nod.

You remember the more innocent times when you were kids, before you knew about all these things like biomods and genes and how none of you were created equal in the most literal of senses. Hell, when you found about Lucina's... status, you were-

What's up with the anger? This seems at most something like Coordinators vs Naturals in Gundam Seed, and in the end the parent is simply giving their child the best support they can in life from the very start. It's not like Lucina's life is controlled or made use of via design by her mother anyways, so I don't see the reason for anger at all. No one can decide how they're born after all, only how they live their life.

"A mix of being super angry and super jealous." You admit. "I mean, how else are you supposed to react to knowing that one of your best friends is objectively better than you in every way?"

"It would be frustrating, I assume." HK nods. "Something like, if I were to confront a model superior to me."

"Yeah, pretty close to that." You nod. "And well, I eventually got over it but things were never the same. No matter how much Lucina tried to play it off, it was always in the back of our heads."

"Yes, it does shed light on the situation now." HK nods, and goes quiet again.

Somehow, though, you get the feeling there's an air of... awkwardness surrounding HK. Was something on her mind, too? It's not like she could refuse you if you asked her.

"Hey, HK, is there something wrong?" You ask. "You've been acting kinda off lately."

"All my functions are operating at peak efficiency." HK replies. "There are no issues with my operation."

"No, I mean, well, what you feeling right now?" You ask.

HK is silent again.

"Is that an order to reply?" She asks cautiously.

"No, just a question." You say simply. "You're free to answer it or not."

HK pauses again, as if calculating all the possible outcomes before finally nodding.

"I suppose you can say I have a... concern." She admits. "I am currently the most advanced T-Doll in existence, but my event prediction software has already concluded that a more advanced model will be developed at some point in the future. If such a time comes, what would become of me? It's something by prediction software has spent numerous cycles processing but has so far failed to come up with an answer."

Huh, so it looked like even T-Dolls could have worries and inferiority complexes. Perhaps HK was a little too advanced for her own good.

Well, firstly you are more than just a piece of hardware. You are a character. Your value extends past your technical specifications.
Secondly you are learning and developing independently of what programmers and engineers cook up with. And even if they come up with a technical improvement, you can follow a different avenue of growth in parallel. You remember our interactions with older t-dolls and my advice not to underestimate them.
Thirdly you can get upgrades if you want to when they’re available and you feel so inclined.

"HK, none of us are concerned about your specs." You grin. "You're one of us, and that goes beyond whatever a piece of paper says you are, are what parts happen to be built into you. You don't need to worry about us leaving you behind."

"I see." HK nods. "Thank you for your assurance."

And with that, HK seems to move a little quicker and with more purpose. Seems like she was already starting to feel better. She certainly was a piece of work, you figure.

At this point, you've already reached the banquet hall, which was largely empty at this point. You could see the maid Dolls already clearing the table, picking up trash, and generally cleaning up the entire place. You turn your gaze to the bar, where you see Lucina and Nemo still there, their backs turned to you. You weren't quite sure what they were saying, but you could definitely see quite a few empty glasses cluttering the bar in front of them.

"I'm detecting elevated blood alcohol levels in their bodies." HK warns, her eyes glowing.

"Hey, Lucina, Nemo! How are you two doing right now?" You ask as you greet them.

"Nemo here has been a devious little liar." Lucina chuckles as she pats her sister on the shoulder. "She can hold her drink pretty well! We're already a bottle in and she's still lucid!"

"I just wanna dieeeeeeee...." Nemo groans, her tiny body swaying back and forth.

"Not yet, we still have to test your limits!" Lucina chuckles.

"Your jusht doing thish because you wanna make me duuuuuuumb!" Nemo slurs. "Well I ain't giving you the satisfaction!"

And then, she paradoxically downs another glass of rum.

"See!?" She exclaims.

"It's nice to see Nemo doing so well." Lucina muses as she turns to you now. "I'm actually surprised you managed to get her to come out to a social event like this."

"Well, it took a bit of convincing." You shrug.

"Yeah cuz you KIDNAPPED me!" Nemo blurts.

It was a really good thing nobody else was around to hear and misunderstand that.

"Well, drastic measures for drastic issues was always how Lewis handled things." Lucina nods.

"You blood alcohol levels are highly elevated above the normal limit." HK points out. "I would suggest you refrain from any further drinking."

"Hah, I don't even feel a thing." Lucina frowns.

"Because of that super liver of yours." You say.

"Don't even remind me." Lucina rolls her eyes.

"Heeeeeeeeey." Nemo reaches an arm out and pulls you in, sloppily trying to jam a glass of rum into your mouth. "No fair that you get to stay outta all this..."

"Couldn't hurt to try."

"Sleeping on one's shoulder does not seem to be the ideal way to rest and recover energy." HK points out.

"Ha, the more time I'm around HK, the more I've come to realize how... grounded Star is." Lucina grins. "She's rather good at recognizing nuance."

"ST-AR is simply an old pattern T-Doll." HK remarks. "There's nothing particularly noteworthy about her besides her early prototype status." HK remarks simply.

Scant seconds later, ST-AR calmly and somewhat casually walks into the banquet hall. The maid Dolls turn their heads to investigate the new arrival, but quickly return to their tasks when they deem her a non-threat.

"Chief." ST-AR nods and then turns to you and HK. "Lewis. HK. Good to see you again."

"ST-AR." HK says simply and curtly.

"I see you all are enjoying yourselves." ST-AR notes as her eyes pan across you, Lucina, and the sleeping Nemo. "Am I gonna have to chaperone?"

"I'm fiiiiiiine." Lucina assures her.

"Uh huh." ST-AR says simply. Not really convinced.

"So, how was your night?" You ask ST-AR.

"Oh, you know, just standing out in the bitter cold for the past several hours staring into empty forest." ST-AR shrugs. "Not sure why anyone would want to build their mansion out here."

"Mr. Spencer is a man who values his privacy and security." Lucina explains.

"Yeah, well, that was pretty much my night." ST-AR says as she casually twirls a finger through her faded pink hair. "I suppose I should be glad I'm incapable of freezing. Sucks for the other guys, though."

"Such is the price of being a public servant." Lucina sighs.

"Anyways, the rest of the squad is starting to pack up." ST-AR remarks. "Are you coming with us?"

"I suppose...." Lucina nods in agreement. "Star, you can go on ahead with the others."

"Whatever you say, Chief." ST-AR shrugs and walks off, HK keeping a close eye on her as she does.

"So, what exactly did you have in mind?" Lucina asks as she turns back to you.

"Well..."

And so time passes, and you and Lucina continue to down drinks, leaving you more than a little buzzed as you try to prove you can beat Lucina in an alcohol race. HK meanwhile keeps a watchful eye on you all, to ensure no trouble is caused.

However, HK is not the only person to be watching you.

"Doctor Vahlen." You pause as you see the Umbrella scientist casually sitting at the bar just across from the sleeping Nemo. "To what do we owe the honor?"

"Please, I can't come by to properly thank the man and machine who saved my life?" Dr. Vahlen smiles. "We didn't exactly leave off on the most convenient of terms, after all."

HK silently nods.

"I am aware your company has already been paid, but I suppose a round on me would be well deserved." Vahlen says as she nods at the bartender Doll, who heads off to grab a fresh bottle of whiskey.

"Was this the mission where you nearly got yourself killed?" Lucina narrows her eyes.

"Uh, yeah, the one in Antarctica." You nod. "Dr. Vahlen here was the VIP we were extracting."

"I see." Lucina continues to give Vahlen a suspicious look.

"And while we were here, I wanted to talk to you about another matter pertaining to that operation." Vahlen glances at Lucina and leans in a little closer. "Privately, if possible. It's rather urgent."

"Sure thing." You nod and turn to Lucina. "Hey, you think you can take care of Nemo here for a second?"

"Right." Lucina nods as she gets up and gently picks up Nemo, getting her off your shoulder. "You sure this is all right?"

"Yeah, don't worry." You assure her.

"Okay, we'll be waiting in the hall, then." Lucina says as she takes her leave with Nemo.

"Now then." Vahlen turns to you, now with a new look in her eyes. The kind you've seen in Egan and Nemo's from time to time, when they were really engrossed with their work. "I would like to talk to you about your bloodwork..."

Uh oh.

Shit, that's right, you had allowed Vahlen to scan your body to diagnose your condition. Did... did she find something out?

"I vas going through all of the data when I came across the strangest thing." Vahlen's finger begins tapping on the bar. "I found strands of Invader DNA in your body."

"Isn't that normal?" You begin to sweat. "I mean, all modern biomods are derived from Invader research, right?"

"Correct, but most of the time the Invader DNA is incomplete, broken. A result of our processes to make the compatible with our own biology. But in your body, you have complete, pure strands of Invader DNA in your very blood! It's all quite intriguing."

You see an all too familiar shine in Vahlen's eyes. The shine of a scientist on the brink of a new discovery.

"We were basically running around in a dead Invader's guts, and I got bitten by an Invader-mutated snake that, might I remind you, you created yourself." You say coolly. "Honestly, I'm not surprised I didn't grow extra arms or a head or anything."

"Hmmm, you do have a point." Vahlen nods. "Perhaps the data was corrupted by outside factors. Perhaps I was mistaken."

"Well, even the best of us are prone to it." You respond, unsure of whether to feel relief yet or not.

"Still, as an opinion of a medical professional, I'd advise against you be careful about distributing your medical information." Vahlen casually. "After all, there are many others out there aren't motivated by merely acquiring knowledge."

"I'll be sure to remember that." You nod.

There's a brief, silence, as if you get the feeling Vahlen is waiting for you to make the next move.

"So, uh, how are you doing in the company now, on account of your lab getting blown up and all?" You ask, genuinely curious. Umbrella guarded its internal workings very carefully, so not much about the actual day to day operations was really known.

"Ah, well, I've unfortunately been temporarily reassigned to the cosmetics division until a new posting opens up." Vahlen sighs. "It's quite dull work, though I suppose it's better than freezing to death in Antarctica."

"What's so bad about it? Lots of people willing to pay to look younger than they actually are." You point out.

"My interest is not in money, but in advancement." Vahlen tuts. "Scientific advancement. There's still so much potential locked away in Invader DNA that we simply do not understand!"

Vahlen downs the rest of her glass of whiskey and slams it down.

"Though it frustrates me that my superiors don't see it the same way."

Well, it looked like Vahlen was on the verge of blurting out some internal company gossip. Potentially valuable information...

"Why don't you go on...." You say as you slide a fresh glass to Vahlen.

"Hmph." Vahlen huffs as she gladly accepts the offered drink. "Marcus, Birkin, Ashford, those men are all fools, looking only to weaponize and profit off of whatever they find."

"Seems to be doing well enough for them." You point out, considering Umbrella's dominance."

"Mark my words, their Tyrant program will run into a dead end very soon." Vahlen grumbles. "I've seen the development history. No finesse, no imagination."

"And you think you can do better?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Nonsense!" Vahlen gulps down her glass. "I will do it the correct way! Using Invader DNA to unlock the potential of the human genome!"

Vahlen then pauses, her face flushed already. Guess she was a bit of a lightweight.

"Oh my, I apologize." She pants. "I'm just a bit dizzy right now."

"So, um, Doctor, will you be needing a ride home or anything?" You ask.

"Oh dear, giving a lady a proposition like that...!" Vahlen giggles, her face still flushed.

"Fortunately, we already have arrangements for that." A slimy and familiar voice says from behind.

You swivel around in your chair to see Wesker standing there, just as smug as ever.

"You have no need to worry. All of our staff's transportation needs have already been arranged by the company." Wesker says simply. "And since the festivities have already officially ended, I will have to ask you to leave the premises."

"Haaaaa, don't be such a spoilsport, Wesker!" Vahlen giggles as she intervenes. "This IS the same Hunter who so loyally rescued me from Antarctica! He shouldn't be a security threat!"

"Hmmmm." Wesker glances at you, and then to Vahlen. "If you insist, Doctor. Just please remember that you're still representing the company."

And with that, Wesker backs off, almost miraculously. You're a bit surprised, honestly.

"Lewis, leaving now would be the prudent course of action." HK warns.

Sure enough, the mansion Dolls and Tyrants were still staring at you like potential intruders.

"Yeah... you're right, HK." You nod as you take Vahlen's hand. "Come on, Doctor, let's go."

"Of course, of course!" Vahlen chuckles.

"Hey! Lucina! Wait up!" You say as you guide Vahlen along.

"Hm? What's up?" Lucina asks as she carries her sister towards the front door.

"Mind if we hitch a ride with you back to the city?" You ask.

"I suppose, but-" Lucina pauses when she sees Vahlen in tow and shifts to a low hiss. "Lewis, what are you thinking?!"

"What?" You blink.

"Hm? Is there a problem?" Vahlen asks clumsily.

"I shouldn't be surprised you didn't think this through." Lucina groans. "You get an Umbrella scientist drunk, and you're asking the chief of the RPD to personally escort her back. Do you have any idea what that might look like?"

"I'm just escorting a lady home. That's all." You say simply.

"Uh huh. Fine. Let's go." Lucina's eyebrow twitches. Did you make her angry somehow?

Lucina leads you out the front doors, where a STARS helicopter is ready and waiting. ST-AR there waiting, holding the door open. She raises an eyebrow as she sees the group approach.

"Picked up a few hitchikers, I see." The T-Doll observes.

"We still have space." Lucina grunts as she gently carries Nemo in.

"Of course." ST-AR nods and shoots a momentary glare at you before climbing in yourself.

You meanwhile help Vahlen inside while HK brings up the rear, sliding the door closed.

"Nnnnnn, are we back yet?" Nemo mumbles as she wakes up, rubbing at her eyes.

"Not yet. We just got into the helicopter." Lucina tells her.

"Wait..." Vahlen squints as she leans forward. "You don't happen to be Dr. Egan's daughter Nemo, are you?"

"That's right..." Nemo mumbles, still rubbing her eyes.

"Fascinating!" Vahlen squeals. "I'm quite a fan of your mother's work!"

Now this was curious.

"Hnnnnn..." Nemo blinks uncertainly, her brain still frazzled from the alcohol.

"Dr. Egan's studies on Invader biology forms the bedrock on which all modern biotechnology science works!' Vahlen gushes. "She opened a door of infinite possibilities to us! It's rather a shame she decided to switch her focus to robotics, though."

"Mmmm, yeah, she was always bit impulsive like that." Nemo yawns. "Once she gets bored with one field she just moves on to another."

"Now, this may sound like I'm being completely out of line, but I simply must know!" Vahlen leans forward from her seat, nearly knocking her forehead with Nemo's. "Has Dr. Egan ever mentioned anything about a 'Nemesis Project'?"

"Huuuuuuuuuuuuh." Nemo pauses. "Sounds kinda familiar..."

"Yeah, I'm sure there's a better time and place for something like that." You speak up as well, backing up Lucina's point.

"I suppose." Vahlen let's out a deep sigh. "I just simply want to create... the perfect lifeform..."

And you can see it, that dangerous moment when a person is about to doze off. Vahlen's eyelids flutter open and closed and her body teeters like a tree about to be cut down. She could fall in any direction, honestly.

You let Vahlen fall on your shoulder to sleep. It seemed an innocent enough move.

However, as you looked ahead, you could see ST-AR shaking her head and Nemo facepalming.

Lucina meanwhile looked to be a poor mood. Her arms were crossed and she found something outside the window apparently offensive enough to keep glaring at.

"It appears there was some sort of miscalculation here..." HK observes.

You were starting to feel like had a point.

4 sessions of amazing rolls and good votes ruined by stupid write-ins to escort a non-romantic target home, and then more stupidity to piss Lucina off. What, The, Fuck. No really, what the hell makes some anons this fucking stupid, or do they simply have THIS much thirst to try to woo ANY women they meet in what limited time they get to see them? Or is is even simpler, as in they simply don't like Lucina. Or worse, they're actually THIS STUPID?

Fuck.

Why, why do some people think ruining good romance and wasting progress is funny? In the end, I'm far less pissed off from the sheer emotional retardation that should honestly be expected from anons at this point, and far more angry from a few votes by idiots making the all the work of other people in previous sessions a waste of time, just because the rest of us more sensible people has to sleep.

All this Carol talk makes me wonder exactly how fine her control is over her body.

I'm guessing that if she can adapt her cells rapidly to suit a need (i.e. grow armor, change texture, or even turn into a blob of flesh), would that mean she's effectively a walking panacea? Albeit, it's a bit redundant considering the amount of genetic engineering in the setting essentially solving every ailment.

Not to mention that Alice and Lewis have a bit of her in their system
