You have reached the shady town of Oakheart. Now you can turn over the malefactor Ikara to the town guard and get on with your mission.
Salaman: "Are these bonds *really* necessary?"
Alina: "Silence turncoat."
Ikara: "Well I answered all your questions, told you everything you asked about my colleagues, now please, turn over my philosopher's stone to my brother for safe keeping."

>"I said I'd destroy the stone if you didn't cooperate. I have no obligation to prevent the Oakheart guard from confiscating it."
>"I said I'd destroy the stone if you didn't cooperate. I didn't say I would give it back to you."
>"Fine I'll give your precious rock to Salaman once you have been incarcerated."
>"Why does it matter? You will probably be executed."
>"Why does it matter? This philosphers stone is clearly defective."

Give both of them to the guard. Tell them to hold Salaman for safe keeping, not for actual imprisonment. Then go have some mage check out the stone for you, Im very curious what its made out of.

Is it human souls?
>>
>>3115623
Sounds good. Maybe not give it to a mage since it's illegal.

>"I said I'd destroy the stone if you didn't cooperate. I didn't say I would give it back to you."
Ikara: "Fine. But if I ever get out I'm definitely coming back for it."
You are interested in learning more about the philosopher's stone but it *is* an illegal item. The best person would probably be that shopkeeper from Leefside since she's both a transmuter and a criminal.

You take Salaman and Ikara to the garrison.
Borin: "Hail! Who is this? Another villain you've captured?"
>"Yes, she's in league with that illusionist and those mercenaries from a while back."
Borin: "Excellent, always a pleasure Christof. You two, take her away."
Ikara gives you a neutral stare as she's ushered away by two burly guards.
Borin: "And uh, him? Isn't he your ally?"
>"I was hoping you can hold Salaman for safe keeping, not for actual imprisonment."
Salaman: "What..."
Borin: "Uh well, I'm sorry Christof the prison doesn't really work that way, that's more like a kennel."
Alina: "Salaman committed a crime that requires a sentence of around one week of imprisonment."
Borin: *narrowing eyes* "Oh yeah? What was the crime?"
Alina: "Ummm he stole a loaf of bread."
Borin: "..."
Ulric: "And uh punched a baby."
Borin: "..."
Salaman: "Just do it."
Borin: "Okayyy. I'll help you out. Hey guys arrest that one too."
A pair of guards escort Salaman deeper into the building. Like his sister Salaman responds blankly without saying anything.

With Salaman and Ikara safely imprisoned you exit the building.
A man in black approaches you.
"Christof, do you remember me?"

>"No."
>"I'm afraid I don't recognize you."
>"Kalim?"
>"Yes, you're Kalim the not evil necromancer."
>"What do you want from me?"
>"Why of course. You are Kalim the necromancer whom I met en route to route Oakheart early in thread 19 on the 6th of January."

>Alina: "Silence turncoat."
Between this and her readiness to shoot Salaman, I really like the difference between her and Ulrich's response to this situation.
It's like each of them are the angel and devil on our shoulder only instead of Good and Evil, it's Open Palm or Closed Fist.

And to those anons who still coldly wish Salaman had died, I understand why you feel that way, but remember that Christof feeling like that so quickly after Sal was his friend and ally, would make him a sociopath.

Kalim: "Do you intend to defeat the dark wizards east of Malgrave?"

He holds out three bottles of dark slightly viscous ooze.
Kalim: "Their leader, Azahl Thibarin, is a very proficient necromancer, he possesses a spell that can slay a man instantly. I offer you these potions, which will protect you from instant death."
>"How do you know so much?"
Kalim: "That's not important."

>Do you know where these Innocents are exactly, so that we might get them safely out of harm's way?
Kalim: "I'm referring to the children who are part of their faction. They roam freely amongst most of the base and the surrounding area and the undead are often used to guard them."
Ulric: "Why do evil wizards have kids in their evil lair?"
Kalim: "They are students, they learn the ways of magic from them. They also perform some skilled labour that the undead can't handle."
Alina: "Where are their parents?"
Kalim: "The children are clones. Their progenitors are the wizards themselves as well as some of the people that were kidnapped.
>"The children must be heavily indoctrinated."
Kalim: "I don't think they made teaching their dogma a high priority. No matter the case, I don't think you will be forced to fight them."

>"Do you know of anyone we could trust to help us? We recently lost our magical support."
Kalim: "I wouldn't trust any of them, but two of them don't really care about the organization and their science. Widalf the Alchemist is only really in it for the money so you might be

able to bribe him. Thezax the invoker just likes fighting and destroying. Niiqarquusu the illume doesn't seem to approve of their conduct, I doubt he would even raise the alarm if he saw

you sneaking about their base and he can't fight. I don't think there's any chance of reasoning with any of the four necromancers. If it weren't for the possibility of berserk skeletons I

would reccommend terminating them as soon as possible."
>"Thanks for all your help. But I should go now."
Kalim: "Good luck."

You follow directions givin by Ikara and confirmed by Kalim. You travel back to the wilderness east of Malgrave and through a long cave into a hidden valley.
Alina: "The terrain is awfully convenient, it's like their base is surrounded by a circle of steep hills and the only way into the valley is through that cave."
>"Yes, the wizards probably used magic to shape the earth over a long period of time. They did have a high level transmuter."
Ulric: "Hey I see a building."
You creep closer to see a stone building in the distance by a lake.

There are several possible entrances according to Kalim.

You decide to watch and wait. Observe before you make your plan of attack. At some point in the night you see a figure standing behind the crenelations of the tower and the faint white light of a spell cast. >"Shoot him Alina!"
Despite the condirable distance, the combination of Alina's skill and the accuracy bonus of her bow and gauntlets allow her to land a shot on the enemy for 15 damage.
Without emotion the wizard withdraws a metal tube from his cloak and loads an iron ball into its muzzle.

You consider scattering and approaching the building but the risk of fighting all the enemies at once is extreme. You start to think fleeing is a better option. You better do something fast.

You cast Protection from Arrows (which happens to protect from iron balls as well) on Alina.
>"Alina! Shoot him in the eye quick!"
Alina: "Quiet. I'm trying to.."
Alina misses.
Alina: "Damn it!"
Ishan casts True Strike.
Ulric: "What is he doing?"
>"We can't fight all of them. We need to retreat!"

You all start sprinting away from the castle.
With a loud BANG Ishan fires his hand cannon. Alina is struck by a speeding bullet for 23 damage.
If the base wasn't alert it definitely is now after that noise.
Ulric: "Alina! I'll heal you."
Alina: "No! Run now. Heal later."
The three of you scurry out of sight and out of range. And escape the valley.

>"Alright it's quiet here. Ulric, heal Alina."
Ulric: "Right."
Ulric bathes the bullet hole with healing light, the wound quickly regenerates. The iron ball is gently pushed out and lands on the stony floor with a clink.
Alina: "Hey thanks Ulric. Not even a scar."
Ulric: "Christof I know you're still mad at him but I don't think we can do this without Salaman. Even the diviner is a dangerous enemy."
Alina: "He's nothing. His weapon is slow to load and he needs to use a spell to do the aiming for him. I can handle him no problem."
Ulric: "I didn't say you couldn't beat him, but there's 8 of them and only 3 of us."
Alina: "I'm not ready to forgive Salaman yet. Maybe we should try to convince Kalim again. Or maybe Hack Ravage? He lives in Oakheart. Hell I'd even take Borin."
>"Hack Ravage injured his eyes at Clarcton, he's probably still healing and I've fought along-side Borin once before, I don't think this battle is in his league."

>"We don't need any backup, we just have to do things intelligently. We only have 3 anti-death potions anyway."
>"I guess now that his sister is no longer a factor we can give Salaman another chance."

Remember them?
Those people who might still need saving? Or at least avenging?
Innocent lives trump our huwt feewings, in my opinion.

But first, yeah, let's definitely try to find somebody we didn't just ask the guard to hold prisoner for a week.

We could always go to a tavern to get more people or even try to raise a small mob and use them as meat shields.
>>
>>3116681
>raise a small mob and use them as meat shields.
Christof wouldn't use live humans as cannon fodder.
Also if they die there's a 1000000% chance the necromancers will turn them into zombies and send them back your way
>>
>>3116685
The main concern in getting close to the building without being killed by long ranged attacks/spells. An "unorganized militia highly motivated by their personal circumstances in a heroic struggle to fix the wrongdoings of the evil wizards upon their families" could help. I really don't see how we can do this without getting more manpower or "getting creative" in other ways. Like scrolls or other indirect method, like using the river in some way.
>>
>>3116696
Good point, the term meat shield made the whole concept seem kinda ruthless
>>
>>3116699
Now I got it! We can try get vegetable mans do it for us! Even the "non violet" form can be used to march to the building holding an explosive. Suicide bombers can do the job, force them to evacuate, possible disperse them and fight them on open filed. Plus if they explode they can be properly used against us.
This would require a lot of preparation and funding, so if we fail again or we don't see another way to do it there is this option left.
>>
You really don't want to go crawling back to Salaman but decide to keep that to yourself.
>"Okay we need a mage, we'll try Kalim again and try for wandering adventurers in the tavern. And if that doesn't work we may begin to think about recruiting Salaman. Got that."

Ulric: "Yes."
Alina: "Okay."
>"Good."

It may be dangerous to stay in this hiding place. You don't really know what the diviner's capabilities are. If he has a crystal ball or knows how to cast scrying it's only a matter of time before they find you.
You could start travelling right now overnight you might get lost though, also monster attacks are more common at night.

Entirely possible and necromancers can't reanimate vegetable men, although you can't just buy petards from some random town.
I think it's hilarious that Christof would resort to using the vegetable men he despises rather than go "crawling back" to Salaman.

Yeah, depending on why he hates them again, it might not make sense.
I definitely gotta reread.

>Suicide bombers can do the job,
Terrible idea.
Vegetable men kill necromancers, undead kill everyone.

What we need, is someone who could summon an expendable force, that we aren't morally opposed to, to use as a distraction. Ideally this person would be capable of working with us and have proven their bravery by returning to fight even after getting injured repeatedly. It would help if they weren't further than Oakheart.
