In the last session we performed a triage on the heavily wounded dwarven monster hunter squad. For our help with the beast we were allowed into the dwarven Underhome called Kamyur. During our visit we observed how these people manufacture their goods. Several materials and alloys peeked our interest, but it doesn’t seem like it is possible to acquire them outside of the dwarven settlements or deep in the Labyrinth. In the end we collected our bounty, purchased some stuff and returned back to Farsalos. It’s time to prepare for the population boom.
>>
>>3095087
Home sweet home. The village doesn’t seem to be much different from the state you’ve left it in. Walls are holding, fields are growing, windmills are spinning, and brick houses are still in great shape. The villagers seem really happy that you came back. Nike’ has wandered off for a bit to look around the place. She said that she would unfortunately have to leave within a couple of days to attend to her personal matters but until then she might as well stay at your place. After dropping off all your stuff you have decided to check up on any changes with the village and its inhabitants.

The liaison hasn’t fallen back on his word. The entire granary is full and the farm has also received three sheep. One male and two females. These animals are great for production of wool, but they can also be used meat and milk. Along with your addition of pigs the village should have a stable source of meat and dairy in the future with no outside intervention. Current food supply should last your people after the population boom for the entire winter. They should still prepare the fields beforehand though…

Villagers have managed to plot out the new fields in expectation of the population influx, but no work has been done to clear the forest for them. Most of these fields are outside of the outer wall limit due to the reasons of space. You haven’t expected the growth to be so fast. Maybe you’ll have to plot an extra wall around the new farming area as well but that should do for now as there are no immediate threats in that direction.

The guy with a broken arm seems to be healing fine. While the bone is not yet completely recovered it is no longer an arrangement of shards in the rough shape of the bone and he has managed to evade the infection. Other veterans with more permanent damage are unfortunately making no progress since they can’t regrow limbs or eyes. They do have some crude prosthesis, but they can’t apply them in manual labor. You might need to look into that eventually, but it is no longer pressing.

Claudina’s novelty is almost completely gone and villagers are no longer seeing her as too alien and exotic. She has set herself up as a local herbalist and she has also started collecting surface plants to expand her goods selection. Her shroom tea seems to be helping Rheia with her… flashback issue but the little girl still doesn’t really trust the village.

Zosime informs you that for the first time ever the village has its own treasury. You have set up a room for that purpose but now it actually contains some Cenophilan electrum coins. Not much, to be fair, but it is huge for the villagers and it raises morale. Now they know they make something worth trading for.
>>
>>3095090
Now that there are no immediate threats you can decide what to do. From one hand you expect new villagers to arrive within about a month and a half. You should have housing prepared during that time. After that point you might need to stop using your powers at full as the more people know the higher is the chance someone would spill the secret. That means any major project after that point would either be several times slower or risk your discovery. That includes the inner brick wall that you’ve recently started. However, it also means you could contract the new villagers to actually make something.

You have three “time units” of half a month each. You get the idea.

>Do something with Nike’. She is leaving in a couple of days, so you won’t have this opportunity for a while and you can easily catch up a few days by working harder. (free time units)
>Excavate, tile and fence off the fields. If you do it now maybe you could collect a small harvest before winter meaning food won’t have to be rationed. (one time unit)
>Wall. You can’t build it fast when people arrive. You need to double down on it so that you won’t have to hold yourself back when the villagers arrive (two time units)
>Infrastructure. You could outsource or delay the construction of buildings if you prepare the foundations, piping and frames beforehand. The new villagers can bunk along with the others in the meantime. (one time unit)
>Bunks. You can construct temporary communal housing to give yourself more time before you need new housing. (one time unit)
>Full housing. Quality housing is the priority for comfortable living of the villagers. Each family should have one with all the needed amenities like beds and running water. Everything else is secondary. (two time units)

I guess everyone wants the fields. Two people want infrastructure. One person wants the wall and there is a suggestion to do as much wall as possible in 1 TU. Let's do it this way: we tilt the fields, do infrastructure and make 1 tu worth of the wall. Also we do the Nike' thing. Writing.

You decide that there are currently three priorities: food, housing and the wall. You won’t be able to do everything on time, so you have to cut some corners. You won’t cut corners with the food. If you do that quickly you will get a whole small harvest before winter hits and you won’t be able to grow food anymore.

If you completed the housing you would not have enough time for the wall and you can’t forgo it because then people would lack the access to running water, heating, sewers and escape tunnels. Thus, you decide to assemble everything except the non- structural walls and furniture. Villagers can build those themselves and you would save almost half the effort.

The third priority is the wall. You won’t have enough time to complete it, so you would have to decide what is most important to do right now. You should be able to complete the foundation, towers and gates. The rest of the wall would be partially constructed. It would be waist high at most and thus it would offer basically no protection. Unfortunately, you must dismantle the wooden inner wall so until it is completed you would have to rely only on outer wall’s defenses.

However, you decide that you’d like to hang out with Nike’ before she leaves. This is an excellent opportunity that you won’t get often. You can learn from her. Maybe a sparring match? Or maybe she could give you some tips in other matters? After a short search you find her…

>In the temple. Maybe she wants to get that teleport anchor setup?
>In the field nearby. You decide to ask her for a spar

After a quick check around the village you find Nike’ in the temple. She seems to be looking around the place and thinking about something. Oisin has probably fucked off somewhere since you can’t seem to see him. As there is no one around you decide to let her know that you’re here and walk up to her.

Nike’ greets you and asks if you would be against having a teleport anchor in your village. Apparently, she has been checking if the temple would do for that purpose. Unfortunately, the answer is a no. Unless you want to give up the entire temple for a portal it would not be possible to make an anchor here. It might be better to either extend the size of the temple or to make a separate shrine dedicated to Nike’.

The issue is that the anchor is not just a coordinate or an item, it needs to have a certain arrangement of psi charged marble to keep itself active and stable. You would essentially need a circle 10-15 meters diameter with large columns surrounding it. Most of these anchors use statues and columns filled up or made from psi marble. The statue part is done mainly for aesthetic and disguise reasons. Nothing too impossible, just time and resource consuming. She won’t be able to do it now but if you want to get her on a speed dial, you’d have to build it and maybe even accommodate an oracle. You now have the technical requirements for constructing Nike’s oracle shrine. Special project has been added in construction list for the future.

Nike agrees to spar with you to give you a little bit more insight into what you might be capable of someday. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have a ton of time, so she suggests you choose one of the following:

>Unarmed combat with a focus on personal psi augmentation
>Armed combat with a focus on affecting your opponent with psi
>Armed combat with a focus on dealing with psi powered enemy

“Very well then, let’s get somewhere where villagers won’t see us and try to spar. I will go with a good chunk of my… less destructive arsenal of psi powers to demonstrate what you might encounter. You’re going to try and adapt to this. Take mental notes and don’t worry about me, I am way tougher than I look.” She says and the two of you set off into the field to the North- East of the village. Roughly in the direction where you’ve fought giant wolves.

Before you set off you’ve replaced the shaft on your halberd. Nike’ wants you to use your weapons so you might as well. You take only the stuff you need just in case. That way you shouldn’t break anything important. You have access to all your personal weapons and your current armor.

When you arrive Nike’ stands opposite to you and drops her mask. She snaps her fingers and the sports wear she had changes to a shining armor of sorts. You assume it is not her actual serious combat attire since it has heels and quite a few openings, so to say. She now also has this strange golden U shaped headwear which looks somewhat like a nimbus. She doesn’t summon any weapons and you have no idea how she has managed to pull that off.

“Ready when you are” she says as she just stands there without any signs of preparation. How should you approach this…?

She said that she was great with augmenting her body, right? Then you should keep your distance. She doesn’t have a ranged weapon, so you should be able to outrange her. You don’t want to use your bow yet as it telegraphs too much and you suspect that she would be capable of easily dodging it. Thus you will fling stuff at her with telekinesis to attempt to distract her while you attempt to find an opening.

This was a solid plan, or so you thought. Nike’ managed to easily evade the torrent of rocks and dirt flung her way sometimes even passing between the individual chunks. Her clothes didn’t get even a little dirty. “Good plan to counter the physical strength, but it is futile to keep long distance against me. Same goes for subspace beings”. You’ve heard the last part just above you as you found yourself spitting out the ground and getting up. She somehow appeared directly behind you without you noticing and threw you over her hip. How did you miss her? You have these superior senses, right? No, you did sense her but for some reason it completely slipped under your attention. You clearly noticed her but didn’t react. What the?!

Ok, let’s get more serious. She is too close to attack with your halberd, so you pull out your sword and augmented yourself as hard as you could. You must deceive her enough to land a blow. However, you can’t seem to swing close enough to hit. She barely dodges and you just can’t correct the blade enough in flight. It just passes millimeters away from her armor. Yet she manages to also outmaneuver you almost completely. “You are faster and stronger. Make your own style, don’t’ just speed up HEMA moves” she says. Then she almost disarms you as you struggle to keep yourself focused on her moves. It is like she is somehow applying card trick distraction to fighting. You barely manage to keep yourself standing as it becomes harder and harder to keep your footing under Nike’s barrage of attacks.

You need to break off and get some distance. Your psychic power focuses and pushes against Nike’ but it almost entirely passes through her pushing her back only a few meters while excavating a large tear shaped crater behind her. “A lot of creatures are immune or can negate or redirect certain psi powers. It is mainly Apostate’s thing, but it applies to all similar powers and some opposites”.
>>
>>3095342
You need range. The only way you can think of is flinging yourself backwards. As you do it you finally notice Nike’ disappearing and reappearing just by your landing spot which allows you to dodge it in midair and land in effective range of your halberd. You can’t land a hit, so you need to go on the defensive. You try to not only augment yourself but your weapon as well. Long objects are easier to rotate if the force is applied on the edges and not in the middle. That’s why Falcon 9 had its cold gas thrusters on the very top. Your weapon is quite top heavy so if you accelerate the striking head you can swing it faster.

With this new technique you manage to block Nike’s attempt to outflank you by teleporting and you even manage to block most of her augmented attacks. Even if barely but you’ve managed to get fast enough to intercept her. Then suddenly you manage to read her move and your instincts force you to block even before she strikes. She should be way out of range for melee attacks but she somehow managed to punch you from four meters away and you’ve just blocked it. “Not bad” she says, “and yeah, teleporting can be one hell of a weapon if used creatively”.

After that you suddenly find yourself on your back right behind Nike’. “Teleporting opponents is a thing too”. She passes you her hand and you note how your armor collapses on the ground back where you stood. You are left in only your under armor and with no weapons. “So, what do you think?” she asks as she helps you back up. “I found out how to teleport only a couple decades ago from an anomaly in the Labyrinth. Unfortunately, I don’t think you’d survive there with your current skill and gear. Want a rematch?”

>Yeah, sure. Let’s do this. Roll 1d20

You tell Nike’ that there are a few things you’d like to try out first. She nods and allows you to put on your gear before you start your mock fight again. You decide to try to leave an opening for her and capitalize on her attack. It could have ended up better, to be fair. For her you are full of openings in general and the openings you do make don’t fool her. A couple times she manages to exploit the opening without you retaliating and she keeps expecting it and dodging your counterattacks. “It is a viable strategy, but you need to train more to fool me with that. I can see when you make an opening on purpose and when you just lack experience. It can actually work on cup bearers and maybe eventually on me when you are much less obvious about it”.

The second thing you wanted to try is to interfere with teleportation. At first you try to make a telekinetic bubble of sorts but Nike’ just jumps through it. Then you apply what you’ve learned from the fight with a 4d creature and ping into the subspace. Nike seems to feel it and she is surprised: “Wow you can actually do that? I think I know what you are trying to do so let me explain. There are several types of teleportation. You can dive into subspace, you could do some fancy spacetime manipulation and make portals without the use of subspace or you could pinpoint tunnel from one point into another like I do it. You kind of drag two locations together and momentarily pierce your way through. It relies on line of sight, familiarity of location or “anchors” to successfully perform it. I really oversimplified it and it is way more intuitive if you find an anomaly. What you did might disrupt the subspace teleportation and collapse subspace tunnels if your enemy doesn’t dive or build them deeper. Also, be careful with wormholes. Those things are rare and decay like small nukes” she explains.

“I am quite impressed with your achievements so far” she says. “It took me much longer to reach a point like yours. Maybe in a couple decades you’d get a strong as I am. In any case, I need to go now. I’ll pop up sometime next year. If you want to find me come and visit any large polis and call me through an oracle. Just look hurried and claim to wish to report on some monster or Labyrinth or some other important event and they’ll let you pass before most other mortals. See you around!” You bid your farewells and Nike disappears in a flash of light. Oh well, you guess it is time to get to work on the village.

When you arrive back Oisin greets you at the gates looking worried and asks: “Was that who I think that was?”

“Who do you think it was?” you ask him. You don’t want to tell him outright and if he gets too close you can always laugh it off, right? “I thought it was someone from the Pantheon. My precognition went haywire as she entered the village just like when you first appeared.” He explains. Huh, you didn’t know that. You shrug and tell him not to worry. He has no idea how close he was.

In any case, building time. You start with clearing, tiling and planting two more fields to the South- West of the village. That should be enough to collect a small harvest just before winter hits. Local growing seasons are longer than in temperate US but there is still a gap when it is just a bit too cold for the crops to mature leaving them alive but not growing for two months. This should allow the village to not ration the food supplies even if you are not there to supplement it with hunting.

Then you go for the houses. You plot and pave a new road system. It wasn’t really symmetrical before anyway but it looks somewhat pleasing and the buildings need to look a little different from each other so that they don’t confuse the locals. After that you expand the piping, sewers and escape routes to the new “plots”. Then you erect the structural walls and beams. This should make further construction easier. In the end you set up the fireplaces and bathrooms. Villagers won’t be able to waterproof or ensure fire safety as well as you can. The rest can be finished by the villagers themselves. The population of Farsalos should triple after all and there are still enough spots in the bunker and in the current buildings to house everyone with only minor discomfort.

Now you need to wrap up with the wall. This is the largest brick related project yet so you had to create a dozen temporary kilns and excavate the clay pit a lot. The wall can’t just be placed on the ground either. You had to dig a trench all the way to the bedrock and fill it up with bricks and mortar as well. The wall itself would actually consist out of two thin brick layer with a filler which is mainly made out of mortar, randomly placed bricks and rocks. You’ve just managed to finish the most complicated parts of the defenses. All that is left is bulk brick laying for the walls themselves. There are enough bricks to finish it completely but you have to stop the construction as you see the approaching migrants.
>>
>>3095768
Dwarf Fortress jokes aside, this is great news. Now the village is thrice as big as it used to be. It is now approaching 250 citizens. There are slightly more women among them but you guess this is because of the recent conflict (the ratio is close to 40/60). Most of the new immigrants are in good health and they arrived with families. You bet that even if you leave the village for good it would continue to grow and prosper on its own, which is a nice thought. You’ve left a small but important impact on this world. The new villagers would probably lack the same opinion of you so you might expect some resistance to your further projects.

Unfortunately, there is no good news without the bad news. The villagers that returned from the war while glad for the updated state of the settlement don’t seem to like Oisin in particular. As in you’ve found him covering behind your house from a lynch mob. Fuck…

>Sigh, come in and tell me the whole story

You sigh and let him in. You didn’t really like the guy. He is directly responsible for the whole sacrifices to the Blight of Farsalos(that monster that you’ve killed just after you woke up) and he has tried to form a cult around your person. You don’t want him to get ripped apart by the crowd but you are quite prepared to boot him out of the village. However, before you commit to that you would like to know what’s up with this guy. He has a shady past that no one in the village knows about.

Oisin understands the situation and he says that he will tell you everything from the beginning. He is actually from the Holy Nation, Cenophilan neighbor to the south- western border. As the name implies, they don’t have much religious freedom beyond the main cult. Oisin was apparently born there and studied theology in the city of Tenisa which is close to the Holies- Valistrat border. During his studies he kept finding little bits of “evidence” regarding the local pantheons and pantheons of other religions.

The evidence was pointing at the fact that all currently known active deities appeared roughly at the same time (within two decades) just under a hundred years ago. In addition, he has discovered that they themselves were similar to Cup Bearers in the way that they were created from humans. Apart of shattering his opinion on the pantheons young Oisin decided to pursue the research to try and reach personal power and immortality.

He has eventually encountered a small cult that was worshiping a creature unlike anything Oisin has ever seen before. He can’t really describe how it looked except of that it caused headaches to anyone looking at it. It promised power and after almost a decade of service it gave Oisin his precognition. He claims that he is still not sure if that was a gift or a curse.

In the end the creature was killed by Holy Nation’s pantheon and Oisin was thrown into prison for blasphemy where he has spent the next four years. He was supposed to be executed in the end but he was lucky and he managed to utilize a monster’s attack to escape by predicting where all patrols would be and what areas of the dungeon the monster would ignore. During his stay in jail he has decided that his life is more precious than his personal power or freedom.

After getting lost in the woods he managed to evade all the monsters until after months of wandering he has encountered Farsalos. He claims that it was just before the military draft. There was a creature in the forest and it has already slaughtered the monster hunter team from Mirangi.

Literally on the second day after he has arrived the creature attacked the village and killed ten people in a rampage before retreating. Oisin survived by hiding where it wouldn’t look. This has repeated another time and he has started looking for the ways to get rid of this threat. He tried to find a way to get it off his back and by extension the village’s. He knew that he could get handed over to Holies if he was caught in Cenophila so he couldn’t afford to just move on. In addition, he has predicted that he would die if he attempted to go through the forest to Mirangi but he didn’t know why.

In the end he has started to try more and more desperate ideas. Apparently, his precognition could tell him how the creature would react to various offerings. It would not accept anything other than human meat but if it didn’t expend the effort to actually catch a human it would not attack the village again. That’s why he has organized the sacrifices. He felt bad for it but it prolonged the village lifespan and by extension his own by almost ten times. He foresaw that he could not survive alone and would be the creature’s last meal at that rate.

But then you have arrived. He could no longer foresee what happens to the creature. The predictions just kept updating as you fought it and in the end his ability to predict further than a few seconds was suppressed completely through just your presence. He was terrified but he figured that unconditionally serving you would be far preferable to death which is why he tried to make that cult thing. After you rejected it, he was stuck in this limbo where no one knows what to do with him. Due to that he has been trying to not show up on the radar of anyone so that people would just forget about him

When the crippled veterans arrived, they were really angry for obvious reasons but it seems that the sheer fact that you weren’t livid at Oisin made villagers think that you want him to be around the place and thus talked them down. People basically think of you as if you were a goddess but didn’t want to be called or treated as one. You are strong, scary and unpredictable. You can extinguish the village in a snap of your fingers and yet you decided to rebuild it and feed the people.

Unfortunately for Oisin the new immigrants didn’t have the same reverence of you and were not fazed by attempts to talk them down due to their numbers. They currently want to execute Oisin for doing the whole sacrifice thing.

Oisin understands that what he has done is heinous, but he pleads you to look at it from his side. He knew exactly what would happen on every decision he made. And he saw that if he hasn’t done it he and the rest of the village would get slaughtered before winter. Oisin can’t figure out any other ways to survive than to ask you for help. He is willing to do anything for you. His life is in your hands.

>Hide him in your house while you try to talk down the crowd
>Boot him out of the village. He has a good chance of getting caught
>Boot him from your house. You hate this guy and you would not care if he was executed
>Other?

no, not our hands

bring Rheia over here, she is the only one that can grant him mercy, since she was wronged the most.

whatever she decides, be it mercy, exile or execution, but only after she hears the whole thing like we just heard

>Hide him in your house while you try to talk down the crowd

Knowing all that, everything he has done makes sense.
>>
>>3096234
Makes sense, but would you like to tell this to the crowd so that they let Rheia judge him or do you get her while keeping the crowd out?
>>
>>3096234
I support this.

His ability is very useful but it may disrupt the village, if he can convince her then he can stay.

>>3096247
I think its better to bring her to the house, the village considers her an outcast too and she is our apprentice

bring her to the house

I agree it makes sense, and I'm very tempted to let him stay in the village, but it was a very callous thing to do, the type of callousness that you can only achieve if you know every outcome of every decision and try to be as pragmatic as possible.
I won't forgive him but I understand his reasons.

As I understand the consensus is to make a behind doors trial and judgement based on what Rheia decides to do with him. Also I am sorry to say it but the time is up. Next post would wrap up for today.

Try to help the guy a little, I kinda think his skill will help keep the village safe.

What he did was terrible but at the same time Oisin can be quite useful. While his precognition is nullified by your active involvement it could still act as an early warning or predict weather for the farms or something. It is tempting, however it was a very callous thing to do, the type of callousness that you can only achieve if you know every outcome of every decision and try to be as pragmatic as possible. While you understand his motivation, you will not pass judgement with your own hands. The only person who has the right to forgive Oisin is Rheia. He lives and dies depending on her word now.

As you inform him of this decision he nods silently. He probably knows that there is no way for him to escape anyway as you escort him through the bunker system to Rheia’s house. Rheia and her mother have barricaded the door and you oversee Oisin’s explanation to her. Rheia can’t decide immediately. From one hand she has experienced much fear and if you weren’t there she would have been dead. On the other hand she is a clever girl and she understands Oisin’s point of view and how he might benefit the village. She tries to get your opinion but you state the same conclusions that she has reached. She has to decide it on her own…

And that's all for now. It is almost 2 am and I need to go. We will continue next Saturday. I hope you liked the quest and tell me what you think so far. Also don’t shy away if you have any questions. I should reply faster this week.

Please note that there might be schedule shifts after the next week. My university has decided to transfer Thursday courses on Saturday morning right when I should be starting my quest. I am currently looking into how I might compensate the lost time. Apologies for these potential changes.

Thanks for running, love the quest.

I was thinking, can we get a character pastebin? It would be useful to remember all our previous contacts and decide who to seek in each situation
>>
>>3096441
Of course. I'll start making it right now and I'll post it once it is ready.
