Salaman's spell finishes and the fireball detonates simultaneously? The sleet storm spell engulfs the cave's interior with driving sleet. Even through the obscuring ice pellets you still see the flash of the fireball's explosion. You doubt the sleet offered any protection to Salaman or the bandits but at least he's *probably* not on fire.
A thick wave of mist billows out from the back of the cave. The fog and sleet combined completely prevent your visibility beyond what's directly in front of you. The ground is icy and slippery. You hear the bandits holler and curse in confusion, they clearly have no idea what's going on.

You aren't sure how many of them were actually real and how many were illusions. They still possess the 200 Talons they stole from you.

>Order a full retreat. No need to take unnecessary risks.
>Order a full retreat. You don't really want to kill these highwaymen, even though they may deserve it.
>Take advantage of the chaos to attack the bandits. They're a potential danger to innocent people.

If you let the bandits go they might hurt innocent people. Fighting them is the right thing to do. You slowly wade into the sleet storm, moving carefully to avoid slipping over. You reach an enemy in the storm, he's struggling to stay on his feet. You take the opportunity to attack knocking him down in one blow to the cranium. A second runs into you from the fog and frantically starts swing at you with a sword. You take 4 damage before the strikes from your hammer take him down. You are unable to find any more enemies to attack before the mist and sleet storm clears.

You quickly notice some of the injuries you suffered have vanished. Clearly they were just part of an illusion. +15 health. On the floor are three dead bandits, dressed not in gold but mediocre quality leather armour. In their hands: bronze weapons. Ulric stands with a mild concerned look, a bit further back Semira stands with more of a amused "serves you right" kind of expression. Salaman is sitting in a niche, he has some burns but is uncorking a healing potion as you watch him.

>Rebuke Semira for her literal friendly fire.
>Try to console Ulric, you know he's a bit softhearted about this sort of thing.
>Make sure Salaman is okay.

>"Are you okay Salaman?"
Salaman: "Hmph no. That brainless elementalist fireballed me!"
He points at the woman accusingly.
Semira puts hers hands up an bows her head.
Semira: "Huddp, O lutnduc cuhn... Christof, Ulric, Salaman. Good bye plus thanks."
Ulric: "Uh, goodbye miss Semira."
>"Farewell"
She walks off.
Salaman stands up and brushes his clothes. The redness of his skin fading slightly as the potion takes effect.
Salaman: "Anyway. Nice work exterminating these thugs Christof."
You give him a friendly slap on the shoulder and turn to Ulric.
>"Ulric."
Ulric: "Huh what is it Christof?"
>"I know you don't like hurting people. But these bandits could have harmed innocent people if we left them. You did the right thing."
Ulric: "I know they were dangerous Christof, but I just feel... ill."
...

The sun set while you were in the cave. You set up camp and prepare to return to Leefside the next day. You sit by the campfire with Ulric and tell him about the first time Alina and yourself met bandits. He listens with great interest.
Ulric: "I would have done the same thing Christof. Making sure Alina was safe is much more important than keeping that guy from the armour."
(You feel like he's focusing on the wrong aspects of your cautionary tale but at least he seems less "ill" than before.)

You gain 225 XP
You now have 28650
You retrieved your 200 Talons from the bandits.

...

You eventually arrive back at Clarcton (not Leefside, my mistake). Alina isn't at the inn when you arrive so you wait around for her. Soon enough you hear her familiar voice.
Alina: "Christof you're back! How are you?. How was your little side quest?"

>"Umm nothing too exciting. Why don't you tell me what you've been up to instead?"
>"Good."
>"Ulric and I had a small fight over a personal matter. But it's over now."
>"We fought some giant chicken monster things and met a black woman."

>"Umm nothing too exciting, just a few bandits an odd beast or two. Why don't you tell me what you've been up to instead?"

Alina: "Well first you guys left and I was really tired so I went back to this inn and went up to the counter. There was no one there so I waited around a while then the innkeeper came and he was wearing a nice green shirt and he told me I looked tired so he gave me a room at a discount and then..."
She somehow is able to speak endlessly about what she was doing for the last two days despite not really doing anything. Going over every mundane irrelevant detail. Your eyes start to glass over. Suddenly she captures your attention by pulling out a set of lockpicks from a small bag.
Alina: "So you were learning that new skill, evocation I think. I thought it would be good if I learned a new skill too. I've been practicing with these lock picks, i'm not very good but i'm making progress, I even got some other useful 'thief tools'. For adventuring purposes only of course."
>"Oh hey that's actually really interesting. What else have you got?"
She shows you a bunch of miscellaneous equipment she has: pliers, narrow bladed scissors, a file, etc.

Alina: "So now that you have your spell where to next?"

Your current plan is to face the evil wizards behind the kidnappings in Oakheart. According to the mercenaries their base is nearby Malgrave castle which happens to be an alledged wish granter location. According to the duke the *best* wish granter is in Tywardreath so the one in Malgrave must be not as good. Since you're in Clarcton the hazards of Tywardreath and the Swamp of Death lie in your path. Travelling too close to the city of the dead brings a risk of undead attacks. Travelling through the swamp risks Hydra attack. Going around will take much longer but you will be travelling on a road instead of the wild and it will be much safer.

>path 1 - dark red - longest safest route, stop by Malgrave castle before searching for evil wizard enclave.
>path 2 - light red - path 1 but skip Malgrave and try to go straight to the enclave.
>path 3 - light green - bee-line towards the enclave, travelling this close to Tywardreath may be dangerous. (Then again, you're going to have to go there eventually.)
>path 4 - green - path 3 but stop by Malgrave first, slightly further from Tywardreath.
>path 5 - dark green - like path 4 but avoid Tywardreath entirely instead travelling through the Swamp of Death which is dangerous for other reasons.

Evil Wizards are a priority.
But I'm leary of getting too close to Tywardreath. Of course, Malgrave might be as bad, or worse, take too much time.
I'm conflicted.

Your journey goes off without a hitch. Over a decently short period of time you travel off road past Tywardreath and past Malgrave to reach your destination without being bothered by the undead at all. The day after you arrive in the area you begin your search, you find no signs of the wizards whereabouts until a figure calls to you. Levitating in the air out of range of your weapons is a cloaked figure with glowing white eyes. Just like the illusionist you fought nearby Oakheart.
???: "Halt! State your identity and your business in these parts!"

She responds loudly and dramatically.
Ikara: "My name is Ikara Cloudshout. Peerless sorceress and skilled scientist. Master of transmutation. Creator and holder of a philospher's stone."
She changes to a lighter tone.
Ikara: "And you are?

>"Christof."
>"Christof, pleased to meet you."

>"Christof, pleased to meet you."
Ikara: "The pleasures all mine, now your purpose here if you please?"
>"Philosopher's stone?"
Ikara: "I'm glad you asked!" She holds out a red crystal. Creation of utilisation of the philosopher's stone is a transmuter's highest calling. It holds the power to transmute base metals into gold. Unfortunately, certain people have made them illegal but I managed to find a wizarding community that operates outside such arbitrary restrictions."
>"So you can make gold with that thing?"
Ikara: "Well um my philosphers stone can't convert lead into gold but it can do something even better: It converts lead into molybdenum! Impressive no?"

>"Very! Tell me more about yourself." (persuade)
>"So you admit your part of the evil wizards who conduct illegal activities in this area!"
>"Not really."
>"Sounds like you made your stone transmute some random useless metal by accident."
>"This 'molybdenum' is it powerful?"
>"Tell me more about this wizarding community you mentioned." (persuade)

>"Very! Tell me more about yourself."

(success)
Ikara: "Well along with my main project I aid my colleagues with their research and experiments. As the only transmuter in the organization I'm pretty important. My powers are often used to fabricate items and create secret passage ways in the base. I also did most of the work making our golem. Honestly they'd be nothing without me. Anyway for now I'm just perfecting my philosopher's stone, after that who knows? I'll have to move on to greater projects."

As she blathers you hear Alina speaking quietly to Salaman.
Alina: "Hey um Salaman, isn't Cloudshout *your* name?"
Salaman: "Yes why?"
Alina: "That woman has the same last name as you, do you know her?"
Salaman: "Huh I wasn't listening what's her name?"
Ulric: "Ikara Cloudshout."
Salaman: "Oh... that's my sister's name."

Salaman interrupts her and shouts out.
Salaman: "Hey! Ikara, it's me. Salaman."
She suddenly freezes. She slowly descends to ground level and unhoods.
Ikara: "Salaman? What are you doing here? Why are you hanging out with these low-lifes?"
Salaman: "You're the one hanging out with low-lifes sister. Your crowd is kidnapping random peasants."
Ikara: "Don't be such a baby Salaman. We need them for our research, at least they're doing something useful for once."
>"I've heard enough, we're putting an end to your 'research', you will tell us where your base is."
Shocked she starts so ascend but you grab her by the arm.
Alina casts dispel removing Ikara's flight.
Ikara: "So you're enemies then huh? Well I wont let you stand in the way of science!"
You all get ready to fight.
Ikara: "Well little brother? Are you just going to stand there and let these thugs brutalise your sister? Your own flesh and blood?"
Salaman: "Uh... well..."

1-50 Salaman sides with you.
51+ Salaman sides with his sister.

(That's all for this session, I'll run again in 6 days. Thanks for playing.)

SOLOBRO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
should have totally tried to flirt with her though, regret that now
>>
>>3088474
I was not expecting that.
Well, at least he only barely came down on the side of his sister.

So, we need to non-fatally defeat two spell casters at once.
I'm thinking we might need to dust off our signature move.
Unfortunately, Salaman is quite familiar with it and we're already in a good spot tactically.
Really, once Salaman makes his intentions clear, we should keep a grip on her arm, hold her between us and him, lift our hammer to hold the handle against her throat if she starts casting, and try to talk him down.
If it goes poorly, then we try to signal Alina to deploy the Maneuver.
Of course, to not let Sal know, we'd have to uses some sort of elaborate coded eyebrow wiggling that we never bothered to learn, which would anyway probably just confuse Ulric into thinking that we're flirting with Alina ...or him.
I'm not saying that the plan doesn't have problems, but it's a work in progress.
>>
>>3088671
I think we should power attack her head with our hammer faster then they can cast
>>
