It's time for an evogame, this time with a twist! This is going to be an evogame much like the ones you're used to, with the small difference that there is a supernatural element in the form of 'Null Light', which will allow you guys to do some less-than-normal stuff. The idea is that this supernatural stuff is treated like any evolutions that means it should develop gradually, be internally consistent and follow the rules established for it.

The Setting:

There is something strange about planet SII-2453-0. Having exited a period of prolonged volcanic activity, life has emerged in its unlit oceans, first plants, then herbivores, then scavengers and carnivores. This fact alone is not yet strange, but coupled with the fact that SII-2453-0 is a Rogue planet, receiving scarcely enough light from the far away stars to facilitate the faintest glow upon its surface, it makes for quite the oddity.

It appears that the energy the plants consume and that keep the planet at an acceptable temperature for life comes not from the stars, but from within. Something lies within that planet, something that craddles its molten core, and which gives off an energy unlike any other in the known universe.

The thing was dramatically dubbed 'It-that-dwells-bellow', and the energy it sent out 'Null Light', on account of its particles sharing many qualities with photons, with the exception of lacking a visible spectrum. The plants on SII-2453-0 have learned to synthesize it, and pass it on to the food chain they are at the bottom of. Soon however, the peculiar energy manifested itself in peculiar ways...
>>
>>3083697
How to play:
• Open an image of a species in MS Paint, or your editor of choice
• Make one evolutionary change to that species (try to turn off anti-alialising when drawing)
• Save as .PNG!
• Post your new species in the thread with a description of what evolution you've added and why.
• Details indicating what the generation of your species is important. Please indicate. (Base Organisms are Generation 0)
• Details regarding a creatures size or name aren't necessary, but are encouraged.
• Nothing too outlandish. Anything incredibly silly or outlandish will not be considered a canon species 95% of the time.
• Between evolutions using 'Null Light' (see bellow) any given ID should try to make at least one evo without it. This is not a hard and fast rule, but it's a suggestion meant to prevent power creep.

Notes:
• Unless stated explicitly, no species ever goes extinct. Old species can still evolve, even if they're not on the latest "chain"
• Try to make your evolutions gradual and realistic in biological standards.
• This includes 'supernatural' evolutions, which must flow naturally from what has been established before, just as normal evolutions would. It is not permissible to just say 'and now they can shoot lightning' without internally and evolutionarily consistent explanation.
• From time to time I will update an Phylogeny Chart so you can track your progress
• Also from time to time, random world events will occur
• Rules for Extinction will be supplied with the first extinction event.

Supernatural stuff:

• NULL LIGHT is the source of everything supernatural in this evo game. It can be converted into usable energy through photosynthesis and is passed on when the plant is eaten.
• There are so far TWO known effects of Null Light ingestion: Generation/Access to pocket dimenstions and The physical manifestation of consciousness (rudimentary as it may be) as ectoplasma. Pocket dimensions are generally corossive for biological matter in them. Ectoplasma is a white, gooey substance slightly lighter than water which flows freely in conscious beings and quickly decomposes into Null Light when no longer in a living organism.
• (Almost) each starting species has a unique way of using one of these peculiarities. To make evos using them, you will have to work off of those just as you would work off of any 'natural' trait.

The Thyrav is an algae which drifts with the ocean current and which is ripped apart by said currents when it grows too large, facilitating reproduction. While it has no unusual abilities itself, its consumption of Null Light makes it the carrier of the energy which fuels the strangeness on SII-2453-0.

Imash are tiny herbivores which feed on Thyrav. They have four tentacles they use for movement of average speed and to move food to their mouths. When they feel threatened, they can slip into a pocket dimension for a short period of time. This only works if there is one available, and can only be done for short periods of time as trans-dimensional stays are corrosive to biological matter.

And lastly:

Bloths are large omnivores without any sensory organs which compensate for this weakness by being able to store huge amounts of nutrients for the long periods of time between happening upon food. This they achieve by generating a pocket dimension within them which they use as a large second stomach. Since transdimensional stays are corrossive to biological matter, this is only a temporal meassure. They move across the ocean floor using stubby apendages.

Imash become more adept at dimensional manipulation. Some will use an even smaller variant of the pocket dimension to carve off chunks of Thyrav which they will then leave in the dimension long enough to corrode the matter as a sort of proto stomach.

Thyravs become elastically mobile when exposed to any form of light or null light, with the motion more exaggerated the greater the source of light. Curiously, some Thyravs will become entangled with one another at a quantum level on occasion. The union is short lived, but seems to result in a form of genetic synchronization between the two organisms.

Some Thyrav develop phosphorous crystal structures in parts of their bodies. "You are what you eat" is an old and sometimes true proverb, and for Imashes, that means getting your nutrients from quantum-entangled sources has some really strange effects. While the other herbivores don't really notice any difference beyond a slightly increased risk of cancer when feeding on Entangled Thyrav, the deleterious effects of being in a pocket dimension cause a much more noticeable change in the Imash. Entire sections of their chromosomes become entangled with those of other creatures, of other species even, and their lessened stability allows them to change into copies of those foreign sections. Often, this results in the Imash gaining horrible, useless tumors, but rarely a functional organ will be formed, and passed down to the next generation.

This new form of Imash, with it's often outlandish and ungainly appearance, has been named the Strange Imash by our researchers.

While actual solar light is less than plentiful, it is still enough for some Thyrav to subsist off of. These Thyrav must float along the surface of Thadoz's oceans, particularly along the equator, where the meager sunlight is strongest.

Because of their lower Null-Light ingestion, they produce far less supernatural quantities that other species seek out.

WORLD EVENT before I go to sleep

Eight gigantic, strange pillars of obsidian, curved inwards much like claws surround roughly evenly a point at the equator. Despite their unusual positioning, these islands of sorts are made of mundane material for the most part, some silicone compounds and other materials making up the bulk of it. As so much on this world however, there seems to be some Null Light in play here, calcified so to speak, dormant within the blackened glass.

Some 50 million years after the advent of life on the planet, around these obelisks, dark clouds begin to gather, and soon lightning erupts as they, like giant lightning rods, attract the electric discharge of the clouds, conducting them into the ocean.
These storms, lasting days and sometimes weeks, never more than a month apart, do not cease for years. Around the obelisks (the area in the yellow line) electric charge runs through the surface level of the ocean. around it, and along the equator, the discharge of energy warms up the water.

The result is an electric milieu around the obsidian obelisks, and a warming in the equatorial seas. The greatest benefactor of this is the >>3084216 Thyrav-photo, which prospers in the warmer waters, forming great colonies there.

Any organism capable of harnessing electrical charge and organisms reliant on warm environment would prosper.

it's when your paint strokes get smoothed out, and the pixels aren't clearly visible. see pic related.

It makes filling in ugly and working off of a line with the same colour difficult. It's basically artifacting on purpose for a smoother line.

+WORLD EVENT+

The storms ebb and flow almost seasonally for millions of years, the obelisks sucking up the lightning like sponges, until their frequency and severity decreases gradually one cycle. Now still the area around the obsidian islands was one of heavy lightning storms, much more than any other area of the planet, but the near constant barrage simmers down to a mere atmospheric oddity.

The reason for this, it seems, that enough charge had been supplied - For now starts a process of tectonic shift, as the obsidian underbelly of the equatorial pylons begins to emerge from the seas. The immense tectonic changes over a short few million years affects all other land masses as well, as their continental plates are moved, and the friction between them erect mountain chains topped with massive volcanoes which spew ash and fire into the atmosphere.

The result of this is a new topology on SII-2453-0.
It also results in much larger, obsidian islands around the equator, whole landmasses running to a crooked point like fingers contorted in agony.
And there are of course also the volcanoes. For a planet reliant on sun, the ash cover might have proved catastrophic for life (and it still does, for Photo-Thyravs), but on SII-2453-0 it means two things: For one the reflection of Null-Light, making its concentration stronger on the surface, especially on the little reflective rock of solid land.
And for another, it supplies huge amounts of Carbon dioxide which supplies the plants of the planet with ample resources for (Null-)photosynthesis.

Consequences:

• New Habitat: Volcanic Wastelands (see map)
• Plants may grow up to ten times their size in a single evo for the next 24 hours (with an upper limit of 2 meters except for colonies
which have no upper size limit)
• Plants based on photosynthesis (>>3084216
and >>3084013) must evolve to adapt within the next 24 hours or be subject to an extinction dice roll.

a offshot from the bloth dragger is the Bloth burster
its dexterous mouth lengthened and enlarged so it could eat even more food the head sways around and feels around until it bumps into something that fits inside its mouth

they eat quite literally anything that fits inside there mouth this means inside the dimensional stomach it stores quite a bit of trash in it and if not digestible or organic gets trapped in the dimensional stomach and stuck inside until the death of the bloth where the dimensional stomach collapses into the 3rd dimension where if it ate enough things it could not digest inflates violently with the material and bursting into a kind of explosion of rocks and sand often killing the predator that killed it
this allows them to store more mass in the physical realm and there for making them fatter and longer

another one is like a weird flat ufo fomred coconut that just floats on the surface with a mini tree or bush on the top possibly with tendrils hanging down

After infecting a Saggeth, they developed mouths similar to the Saggeth's, as well as the ability to dash quickly by expelling ectoplasm. They use their sharp spines to break the Saggeth's skin and crawl inside using their tails. Once inside, they latch on with their mouths and start the process to produce more tumours. The tumours drain the Saggeth's ectoplasm and take it for themselves, leaving the Saggeth to die. They then burst forth, already fully mature, and use that ectoplasm to find more Saggeths.

Sweet death is a form of algae that can synthesize "arcane sugar" using null-photosynthesis. This posses drastically slow the growth rate of the algae but make it completely inedible to unadapted consumers.

ARCANE SUGAR
In the simplest of terms: arcane sugar is a Disaccharide which suspends and stabilizes a molecular sized point of extradimensional portal. As this extradimensional space is almost universally corrosive to organic matter, any organism that digests arcane sugar will have exposed tissue dissolve into nothingness, which is almost always fatal to the creature. Once the extradimensional point is destabilized, it will only last for a few moments before ceasing to exist.

Two major changes to the Photo-Thyrav. A) Their chloroplasts (or analog) change pigment to absorb more of the red-wavelength light that manages to make its way through the ash layer. B) Over the course of their evolution to survive on the surface of the ocean, they created larger, sturdier paddies of Photo-Thyrav, able to float on the ocean surface more effectively.

Basically, think rudimentary lily-pads.

With it's singular nostril and lung, a set of organs not possessed by any other lifeform on the planet, The Shine Irrisim has gained access to an amazing ability: holding it's breath. Combined with their capability for sight, the Irrisim now have a very successful defensive strategy: when they spot a predator from far away, they climb out of the water and onto the shore, waiting for the enemy to lose interest, which, given that every creature so far has only a very basic nervous system not capable of keeping attention for long, is not that much time. While holding breath for a few seconds is easy and there's no terrible, horrible sunlight to burn it's delicate skin off, the lack of moisture is a serious problem. The fact some Irrisim shriveled and died while waiting for their assaultant to go away was a big evolutionary incentive for the loss of water permeability in skin, and the abundant amounts
of delicious Irrisim jerky left completely untouched on shore was a big evolutionary incentive for holding breath long enough to enjoy it's taste.

+WORLD EVENT+

"Flesh"

As plants become more boyent and travel on the ocean surface more often, they frequently wash ashore, especially in bays and seas where the currents would have them rotate within its coastlines, maximizing the probability of running ashore. This means that Imash of all kinds - but for some reason Strange Imash most of all - will sometimes approach the coast and nibble from the stranded Thyrav.

It is not quite clear what happened next. There is speculation that it must have to do with the gene entanglement effect of some thyrav species, because it all happened at once. Another theory is that it has to do with overreliance on pocket dimensions, and that it is the result of an expelling of all the living matter that had corroded in them over the eons.

As nebulous as the cause may be, the effect is clear: Imash flesh spans the coasts of the bays of the continents, writhing tentacles and pulsating nutrient sacs grinding up against the rocky shores.
There is no apparent reproduction in the flesh, which seems to act as one dumb and blind organism, beyond a tumor like growth wherever the plant intake allows it that some lucky tentacle shoves into a nearby mouth.

The flesh is kept alive seemingly only by its modest needs. Its composition is the bare minimum of Imash biology, with little nutrient value but little need of maintenance. Nevertheless, un(?)lucky stretches of flesh die off as they cannot be supplied with nutrients, turning the coastlines into noxious wastes of carrion.

This is flesh.

Consequences:

• New Habitat: Flesh (see map)
• Carnivores may grow up to five times their size per evo to a maximum of 50 cm for the next 24 hours

Hold my shadow draught, I've got this.

The sudden appearance of flesh out of thin air, it becomes clear that pocket dimensions have some means of transporting biological matter. The Imasites, being born of the pocket-dimension-sensitive Imash have found a link back to their original hosts through the nul light. However faint, a fully grown Imasite leaves a kind of genetic imprint in the void, which resurfaces in new tumors grown on the Imash. Alpha Imasites growing into adulthood are fewer, because the electrical currant on which they feed has died down. But in a violent and not-at-all-symbiotic way, they have started reproducing through the Imash.

Indecently, they have become more gross and fleshy.

Call me out if I've gone too far.
>>
>>3088733
I'm calling you out.

You are using pocket dimensions as parallel dimensions which they are explicitely not. They are localized and independent of each other. Your Imasites will have to travel back to their host if they want to implant in them their genetic material, or 'impregnate' as it were a pocket dimension an Imash happens to enter.

But the latter would still have the problem of that genetic material corroding over time.

Sorry to quench this awesome beast, but I gotta be strict here or everything goes.

The Flaggeth is a Saggeth that has larger, more developed fins on the side of its body. It can use those fins to generate enough lift to temporarily fly above the ocean surface. However, it is not able to do this for long, for several reasons. 1. its ectoplasm supply can run out very quickly, and 2. it dries out in the open air.

The Flaggeth uses its newfound flight to launch itself up out of the water and onto the Imash flesh on the coastlines. There, it will eat until it is full or until it starts to dry out, and then flies back into the water.

The Imash, still seeking out prey to eat and absorb genetic material, have found fully grown Imasites a rather easy catch. Upon digesting it, the Imash will again grow new parts, but all of them are Imasite-tumors, bearing genetic material from the eaten alpha.

It started out with a few lucky kills, but as evolution goes, the genetic code for "acting as a prey for Imash" is now thoroughly embedded in the Imasite gene pool. Still, the appear increasingly more gross and fleshy.

With the development of Sharreth's that are capable of penetrating their defences and not being as smooth and hydrodynamic as their relatives, the Harmash needed something besides a hard shell to survive. So, they developed a symbiotic relationship with Thralrav.

The Shymash has an even rougher shell than the Harmash, which is used to host Thralrav. The Thralrav keep the Shymash's predators away with their consciousness "back off" single in exchange for absorbing nutrients from the Shymash's shell.

This is Grass. It lives on land.
>>
>>3090604
Field Researcher's notes: the Grass isn't as harmless as it looks. Electrical shocks emanate from it, spread through a fine mist of highly conductive ectoplasm around it. Not only that, but Grass has an unusual mating mechanism, common to Thyrav descendants at this point. Instead of fusing the sperm and ovum of two individuals to make a third one, a singular individual obtains genetic code from a second one directly through quantum entanglement, then splits off a third individual. This proves quite handy, as without a way to spread physical seeds "traditional" gene exchange can be quite tricky.

For now it's ability to turn inorganic compounds into organic compounds through photosynthesis is not enough to support it fully, so some amount of underlying compost is necessary. However further generations may advance further and lose the requirement for detritus altogether.

This suggests that the grass has an at least very rudimentary brain-like organ, and even just to generate it. I should have caught that at the Tharlav already, but oh well.

It will implicitely have a tiny nervous knot in it doing nothing but generating a bare minimum of ectoplasm. If anybody wants to evolve that more explicitely, I would be much oblidged

The Photo-Thyrav have begun the evolution of a cohesive internal structure.

No longer classified as the same species, these Thyrui are composed of three separate organs. Rather than all the cells staying together as one homogenous mass, cells have begun to specialize into 'core' veins that hold the plant together and transport nutrient, 'leafy' outgrowths that absorb more sunlight, and a rudimentary 'root' to provide greater stability and a way of filtering nutrient out of the surroundings.

They maintain their positions on the ocean surface, where the dim sun shines brightest.

+WORLD EVENT*

"You could have prevented this"

Flesh, as modest as they may be, still has needs - a need, anyway. Nutrients. Unsurprisingly though, few plants have supplied the quantities need to keep organisms the size of Flesh alive, and so, after millenia of a dire existence, they die, one by one.
They leave behind carcasses of continental size. Soon, the organisms of the planet are feasting upon it once more, but as bacteria takes its own, a feast becomes a death trap, for toxic gasses of thousands upon thousands of tons of rotting flesh begin to fill the inner seas, putting serious pressure on the creatures living there and across the ocean where the gas travels.

One stretch of flesh remains however: In the Bay of Meat, the Flesh has spontaneously adapted. While the requisite plants are not forthcoming, they have found a new way of getting their nutrients: Meat.

Consequences:
• FleshTM, where it is still alive, is now omnivorous
• all organisms living on Flesh must make an extinction roll target number 6+ or go extinct.
• all non-detrivorous organisms living on the shorelines, on the ocean surface or right bellow it have to make an extinction roll target number 3+ or go extinct
EXTINCTION ROLLS - HOW TO:

• Extinction rolls are required when extinction events occur.
• Every ID has (in this case) 3 rolls to allocate.
• They roll a 1d8 for any species they want to save, and if they meet the target number or above, the species survives.
• Any species under threat of extinction whichis not rolled for, or which has no rolls that meet its target number will be extinct after I say so (normally about 24 hours after the event)
• Until their extinction, these species can still be evolved and can thus adapt to the extinction event. EXCEPTION: An end-of-thread extinction event locks evos from the outset.

Folliclyrav living on the surviving Flesh adapt to cater to it's new.... apetites. It seems this species has abandoned comensalism in favour of a more symbiotic relationship, further refining it's "stream of consciousness" using it to stablish a primitive communication with it symbiont, rather than just giving it orders not to eat it.
They also develop receptors on their now coily bodies, using them to constrict any species unlucky enough to be caught, and feed them to the Flesh.
Although due to their size they are able to catch almost any species living on the Flesh, it seems the most common prey are plump, fat and old Phthukki that have grown too big and slow.

The Rirrisin or 'Rirris' for short still holds some ground as a prominent bottomfeeder. With the increase in food from hunters above, they have found their tiny mouths, well, tiny. Over time their outer cellular wall has weakened, causing food bits to stick into it as they roll. Over many generations, the main mouth has decreased in size. The Rirris now absorbs food through the skin as it rolls. It is however a slow process.

They live in deep waters so do not require a roll?

and with some of that squid portal DNA letting it snap out of portals and drag in prey to be digested from the other end kind of just repeatably chewed up and and puked up before its sent to the body or stored in the intestines from the other end so it work like normal put now it can take in food from both ends
like a kind of mimic species that stays close to there cousins and using them as bait and the only real difference on the outside is tiny or how they start bigger and grow bigger then the cousin species
>>
>>3092052
if the shell is made of non-organic, short molecules, then it can stay in the pocket dimension for a long time, longer than the animal's life span would be. But it can't protect anything bellow it - it's not like pocket dimensions are filled with acid, simply BEING THERE destroys complex molecules and large atoms (as well as noncomplex molecules and small atoms, just more slowly)

The Monomash kept getting thinner and thinner in order to better interface with it's cutter portal, even slimming down to a single layer of cells, until one fateful day, something strange happened:
The Flatmash was born.
A creature with an incredibly flat personality, the Flatmash is infinitely thin and completely two-dimensional, it's existence in traditional reality allowed only by it's highly degenerated pocket dimension organ. Other functions of it's body have been greatly reduced as well, it's nervous system simplified due to space constraints and it's "stomach", if you could call it that, being nothing more that a channel running throughout it's body, lacking even a true mouth.
The Flatmash makes up for it's deficiencies with the extreme danger it can pose to any organism or object in it's way. Having almost zero functional mass, it is capable of disregarding the planet's pull, gliding gracefully through water and air alike, and slicing through anything it hits.

The portal Umash has gradually been staying longer in pocket dimensions, growing thicker skin. Along their body, extra thick patches of skin have formed that have a different sensitivity to the pocket dimension and the outer world. With this, the Umash can lurk inside a pocket dimension, away from predators and capture food nearby.
>>
>>3092106
Field Researcher's notes: Flatmash seem to favor smooth, flat areas as "resting spots", often circling all over them for days on end despite the lack of any rational reason behind this behaviour.
The body of the Flatmash seems selectively permeable: inorganic objects tend to remain whole, if a bit sliced up, after a specimen passes through them, yet when passing through a living being it's flesh will "fall" into the creature, seemingly disappearing. As being inside another animal usually restricts observation, it has not yet been determined what happens to the "eaten" material.
When a Flatmash is killed, it tends to explode violently, seemingly as a result of it's exotic geometry being forced back into conventional reality and failing to function in it.
While the Flatmash has no way of moving up and down under it's own power, lacking the neccessary musculature, it seems to possess a way of heating the atmosphere around certain points of it's body, using the resulting difference in air/water pressure to turn.

Thanks to a miracle mutation caused by a viral infection gone wrong has caused Photo-Thyrav to produce kuanophyll instead of chlorophyll. Kuanophyll is a pigment similar to chlorophyll but instead of absorbing red and blue light well but reflecting green, it has blue and green swapped. This has vastly improved the algae's ability to photosynthesize thanks to the fact that there is vastly more green light than blue reaching the surface. Due to this massive increase in success the Thyrav has undergone a regression. It no longer forms into large pads and has lost it's useless nerve cluster.

The Glowmor take to the skies, their incredibly lightweight forms are easily lofted into the atmosphere through a weak null-laser. The plant itself thrives off proper photosynthesis, and will propel ever higher in search of brighter light. Once too heavy to fly, it crashes down onto the land and into the ocean, to begin the germination process. A fantastic spectacle involves a beautiful glitter of Glowmor "dust" on the winds and in the clouds when light strikes it properly. The dust is also incredibly abrasive to lungs.

due to the genetic merge there has been a MAJOR drop in population but the good thing is that they are very long lived so they just dont go extinct.
the reason population drop is due some major genetic fuck up that are just showing now with most of there offspring now being small mutated freaks making for a quick snack for others and those that can somehow miraculously survive and reproduce have there "skin" wrinkling and straining at places forming postulates and protrusions of uselessness "skin" and flesh often gaining small deformities on its body sometimes forming movable but nearly useless limbs..
What was once a second mouth is now more like a anus puking out water it has sucked in and its the only thing that keeps it barely from just sinking at the bottom and dying its small weak and not smart in any sense of the word they eat anything that comes close to there tendrils or sucking mouth
this is image is a example of one of the most healthy examples of The Failure ever seen to date

I'm inclined to agree. Not that amalgations aren't a fun idea we shouldn't try out, but it definitely feels far too soon to get something like this. More than anything, the size differences need to be addressed for it to work, then perhaps have an evolution or two of them being a symbiotic dual-species before merging them into one new one.

Unless iMM9F4k9 actually did build that up somewhat. Its just hard to tell, trying to parse and understand what the hell their actually saying.

>>3093558
As far as I can tell he said that the species appeared after the Strange Imash stole the genes of the Bloth through one of it's quantum gene transfers, which is mostly believable except for the fact that the drastic change involved would preclude the hybrid from actually breeding and thus end the species before it even begins.

>dont break down in the dimension pocket
Again, for reiteration, pocket dimensions are anathema to ALL matter from our dimension.
Organic matter is just the first to decompose, because it is the most complex and fastest to break down. But from OP's own hints, even simple molecules and atoms will eventually be destroyed in that alternate dimension. This also isn't something like acid surrounding you on all sides. This isn't something you can make a 'shell' around yourself to absorb the brunt of the damage. This is a decomposition that permeates your entire being, all of the cells of any organism in a pocket dimension are being equally destroyed when they enter. The very dimension itself is trying to tear you apart from the inside and out.

The best solutions OP has posed thus far is either with minimum exposure (ie, animals can blink in and out of reality, but not sustain a long term warp) or with a rapid healing factor (able to regenerate cells faster than they are broken down). Pocket dimensions are a useful space, but suitably dangerous until we can think/evolve something that bypasses some of these limitations. Or they just might remain dangerous forever, since this is an eldritch location.

>>3093435
Go ahead and evolve some. Seems like most of the plant evolutions have been focused on the surface of the ocean or beginning terrestrial growth, so its a niche ready to be filled. Maybe sprout off of this one >>3092115 since it is a purely null-light consumer.
>>
>>3093312
I aagree that it seems extreme. If we say that can happen then it will allow for way to much bullshit further down the line. You could have it so it steals genes from much larger terrestrial animals without that it never meets, which is kinda bullshit.

The process of convergent evolution has made the Blue Photo-Thyrui evolve similarily to the Winged Thyrav. (>>3093800)
Also because I felt that posting a recolor would be just too lazy:
They develop a segmented body, whose growth seems to only depend on the available resources, however the total number of segments is limited, stopping around the 30th.
Their body becomes more tube-like, allowing them to face less resistance when gliding in the water, with their inner walls being lined with the same fibers present on the backsides of their leaves. This lets them easily suck in any ectoplasm present near them.
The Blue Coilravs grow in large groups, forming moving algae forests in the oceans of SII-2453-0.
>>
>>3094141
Forgot to mention, they reproduce via spores (I'm guessing thats how all algae in SII-2453-0 do.) but if a segment is ripped off the plant, it will act as a new plant.
>>
>>3094149
>I'm guessing thats how all algae in SII-2453-0 do.
Unless otherwise specified, (or circumstances make it implausable), reproduction happens as in the parent generation. Which in this case dates all the way back to the original Thyrav which reproduced by being ripped apart after growing too large.

Also, Where do the algae forests move about, aproximately? In case I want to put them on the map. Are they equator, shore proximity, polar regions, ubiquitous...
>>
>>3094156
I'm going to assume that plants that live on the ocean's surface are at the equator where there's more light. Plants that live off of purely null-light aren't visible via the surface because of how deep they are. Everything else is distributed fairly evenly except at the poles, where there's not a lot of light. The only plants that live at the poles are purely null-light-dependant.

The Shellgrav float relatively deep in the oceans to maximize the amount of null-light they can convert into energy, at the same time they grow long strands of chlorophyll rich tissue that is sometimes interrumped by small "caps" which release proto-seeds during mating season. These long floating stems also have small root-like fibers growing out of them so as to catch as much sunlight as possible.
These plants may sometimes congregate into large groups known as "mine fields" (due to their resemblance to naval mines), which aren't dense enough to be classified as algae forests.

Its been a while since someone's drawn from the gen 0's, hasn't it?

While many Imash have taken to using the built up Null-light energy they harvest from Thyrav and other plants on accessing pocket dimensions, this subspecies has managed to shed intangible 'specters' of itself to evade predators. These specters quickly disipate after being released, and have no physical form, often leaving would be predators in a state of confusion if they bite into one.
It is unknown if these specters are corporealization of ectoplasm, shed off from the main body. Or echoes of the Imash from the pocket dimension, escaping back into the material realm.

They also turn slightly purple, because why not. I figure that might be what this sort of null-light ingestion might look like.

"The silence before the storm"
aka: "This is a sign"

The currents of the Ocean have changed. Where before there had been seasonal changes in intensity of polar-equatorial flow broken up by continental blockage, now a more predictable, more severe current has taken hold - One circling the Obsidian Islands around the equator.

Consequences:
• Cooling of Equatorial seas and land. This is not yet an extinction event. the yet is emphasized
• A bad feeling concerning the future.

In the bay of flesh, the Imasites thrive. Well, "thrive" is a bad description: they wiggle around in the warm flesh, away from the cooling sea, waiting to be consumed by a mouthhole opening in the Flesh. However, this has cause Imasite tumors to grow, not on the Imash, but on the Flesh itself.

This has grown the new tumor-born Gurosites, bearing a horrific set of teeth similar to those of the Fleshmouth. The mouth is entirely redundant as the Gurosite still lives of small electric currents, before dying early or being consumed. They mainly use their teeth like their horns, to randomly attack other critters.

Researchers have accurately described them as "gross cancerous douchebags".
>>
>>3095131
Just to be clear: the Gurosites aren't really able to sustain themselves with nutrients, but still large groups exist because of their incidental way of reproducing. They make easy prey and therefore live very, very short lives, but that makes that causes more gurosites being born.

Imagine you'd getting pregnant of tiny cows each time you ate a hamburger.

+WORLD EVENT+

"The Maw" part 1 of 2

The currents of the ocean have been circular, around the center of the obelisk's circle. Into it, water flows, but no outflow is being detected.

For a while, this was a small oddity that seemed to not affect the sea height much. But then the thunderstorms returned.
And the currents, especially around the equator, increased.
Then the dark light emissions weakened across the globe, with the exception of the obsidian islands.
And then the whirlpool appeared.

A gigantic vortex opened up in the midst of the obelisks, sucking in water and lightning from the clouds. It was as if some great hole had opened at the floor of the sea, and the Oceans plummetted into the gap.

Consequences:
• Doomsday clock: in 24-48 hours (when I get to it), all evolution will be halted and extinction rolls will be called for.
• lowering sea levels: land will be expanding between now and the extinction event.
• lowering temperatures: temperatures will be lowering between now and the extinction event.

Evolve accordingly to get a better roll in the extinction event.

And may Thadoz have mercy on you all.

Cold adaptation ideas for plant anons based on real life:
1) Underground bulbs to preserve useful nutrients/energy reserves so surviving cold periods would be easier
2) High concentration of monasacharides in leaves/stem or any part of the plant not underground prevents freezing

Most of these only work for land plants

Sphereocytes are Imasites that find themselves bursting from "the flesh" but hitting land instead of water. The colder terrain causes the creature to roll up into a ball of sinew and begin to slowly roll about. They carrier their host's capability to process organic matter, if limitedly. The creature is constantly starving, but can stave off death via consumption. They are attracted to sources of electricity, even weak ones, and have been known to slowly follow other creatures.

The Blue Anchor-Hoya is a Hoya that has directed growth. When ever a root finds a large source of nutrients(Detritus, soil... living creatures) the Hoya will begin to grow all roots in the direction of said source of nutrients. When nutrients are now longer received in large amounts from a root it's severed after about a week. Due to this behavior the Hoya will eventually become rooted into the sea floor , either because it grew to large and sunk or it got rooted when young to the floor.

>>3093740
The photo-thyrui, over a long period of time, evolve several more advanced structural components and organs to compete for the sparse real estate on the ocean surface.

Most notably being the development of 'bulbs'. These bulbs grow off of the offshoot roots, and can either grow to become more leaves for the individual Thyruius, or break off and float through the ocean currents, before growing a new Thyruius plant.

Their root system, meanwhile, has developed to be large and entangling. While the lone bulb might free itself to spawn new Thyruius, the colony as a whole is typically composed of a few primary Thyruiuses that branch and entangle within each other. Their offshoot roots are also supported by a primary taproot which descends deep into the water, to gather any nutrients they can, or occasionally find purchase in grabbing onto other things below them.

Finally, they have developed a dual-faced leaf. Since the scant sunlight only comes from above, all the chloroplasts have moved onto the top-side of the leaves, darkening the top side, and ensuring no sunlight makes it past its canopy. This results in an interesting development on the bottom-side. Since the Thyrui long ago gave up their null-light photosynthesis, the Thyruius wants nothing to do with null-light coming from below, as any null-light that makes it past the canopy encourages other plants to grow on top of their leaves and cut off their valuable sunlight. As such, the bottom-side of the leaves have developed a specific protein that is highly reflective of null-light.

To prevent (or at least, slow) their involuntary migration, Shellgrav have developed an 'anchor' to catch themselves on the ocean floor as they are pushed via the currents. These do not function as an actual root, however, and so the stem of the plant has also lengthened by a considerable amount.
With the evolution, the phenomena of minefields have also changed. As they are much slower to be moved by the ocean currents, these groups can get much denser.

While their bulbs are typically heavy enough to keep a shellgrav closer to the ocean floor than the surface, the increase in ocean currents has been enough to distribute these plants across the various strata of the ocean.

Those that manage to reach the surface encounter an interesting new ecosystem. While Null-light is typically stronger the closer you get to the core of the planet, the area beneath the Thyruius colonies >>3095802 have a much stronger concentration of null-light due to their reflective underbellies.

This results in a sub-set of Shellgravs readjusting their buoyancy to remain in the sweet spot beneath Thyruius colonies. Shellgrav stems often get tangled up with the taproot and offshoot roots of the Thyruius, resulting in a tangling mass of plant fibers. And since the Thyruius allow little to no sunlight to pass the surface, the shellgrav dedicate themselves fully to null-photosynthesis in this newly discovered hot spot.

They get slightly longer and can form more complex strands as a result.
>>
Warping around and blinking using pocket dimensions can be a risky proposition in the Thyruius ecosystem; mainly due to the mess of plant fibers, which can easily capture and entangle any species that doesn't look where its going before it warps.

As such, the other species of Imash and their decedents that rely less on portal-hopping find the Thyruius ecosystem a prime place to consume plants and null-light, while also providing more protection than the empty ocean. Primary of which being the
>>3095017 Specter-Imash, which can escape in the plant growth while its ectoplasm-specters lead predators in completely different directions. Often getting them completely lost in the maze of fibers.
and the >>3095899 Brain Imash, which can use its manifested ectoplasm lubricant to easily slip and slide its way through the over growth.

the thinn imash have gotten even smaller, becoming the smol imash. the smol imash have become even more skilled at dimensional manipulation, being able to semi-manifest a pocket dimension. semi-manifested pocket dimensions are fields that alter the weight and corrosion of what's inside depending on how fully manifested they are.

Ex.a pocket dimension that is 80% manifested has 80% of it's existence overlayed with our dimension. This means that anything in the pocket dimension weighs 80% as much on our side. this also means that only 20% of the pocket dimension is "in use", making the corrosion effect 20% as potent.

this allows for easier transportation of objects, like eggs from predators.

Although first believed to be a subset of the Thyruius Forest Shellgrav (>>3095947), the Polar Shellgrav is a completely different species that evolved to survive on the colder deeper parts of the ocean, and the polar seas.

The Spikegrav biology has adapted to vast darkness, now depending almost completely on Nullsynth. , their bulbs have become much larger, and no longer develop stems. Instead, they grow thorny vines sporadically, that can either grab onto an object (ie: the underside of a glacier, a rock, etc) to use as an anchoring point, or grow into a new bulb if theres nothing to hold on to. This behavior leads to the formation of "nets" made out of these plants, which act as a perfect cover for small hervibores, since the plants' thorns harm large predators that hunt them.

Researchers have described these nets have "an eerie feeling to them", a sensation most likely caused by the large amounts of null energy in circulation in these ecological communities.

Following Hsmyx generations further adapt to take advantage of their opposing pocket dimensions, forcing them ever closer against each other. This violent clash of dimensions creates heat like never before made by an organism on the planet. Few of the Hsmyx with this adaptation survive maintaining the reaction and the heat generated without destroying themselves. Those who do reap the rewards of their inner fires, as organic and inorganic matter alike gets consumed in the reaction. As a result these Hsmyx become larger.

Far in the unending darkness of the planet's depths weak lights can now be seen, slowly moving about the seafloor.

These Pigs can be found surviving in regions bordering to the obsidian pillars. As a result, to survive strong streams of water, these Pigs have become larger and their bodies have started to develop patches of leather-like tissue serving mainly to increase their weight.

Some Thyruius develop an interesting adaptaiton; thermal synthesis. While no longer using null light, the plant adapt its underside coating towards converting null light to thermal energy, which aids in chemical conversion. A byproduct of this is a mild EM field that seems to drive away more intelligent creatures. At the same time the supple leaves are dense with water and nutrients. Coupled with the naturally ectothermic nature of the plant to function and you have an enticing place to dwell, if only for short periods.

The Clingers seem very attracted to the obsidian pillars and isles, clustering over them in thick creeping mats.

Instead, when they are low on nutrients and ectoplasm to float, they sink to the ocean floor and go into a passive hibernation mode. They anchor their viscous membrane to the ocean floor, slow down their metabolism and fortify their cellular walls. A passive Rirri can stay down for months and even years. They activate when clouds of ectoplasm float their way, which they absorb and use as an energyboost. They float up again, gather nutrients and ecto and settle down again when needed.

When the oceans are in turmoil, the Rirri will be fast to the bottom of the oceans, sleeping...

They have also further specialized some of their former proto roots in to basic vascular tubes to better distribute water and nutrients through out the algae. The mass of photosynthesizing algae on top has flattened out too better catch sunlight. Finally, and most remarkably, the algae has devloped a addiotional way of reproducing, budding. The Shrub will release male gametes that will seek out other Shrubs, it will then fuses with the Shrub and 1-2 weeks later a new Shrub will fall of the parent Shrub.

While originally overlooked due to no visible distinction between species, some grass has developed into Synapse-Grass.

The lump buried into the ground has grown, both in mass and in neuron count. This lump not only stores nutrients and grows the leaf blades, but it also generates the electrical shock needed to keep plants from eating it.

Interestingly, the use of this defense mechanism has declined relative to other grass species. The shocks are only used when the lump itself is at risk of being consumed by an animal. Otherwise, herbivores are free to eat the small blades that stick out of the ground.
>>
>>3100001
The Synapse begins incorporating more ions into it's cells chemical composition as a way of building up a stronger electronegative potential. In order for the electric currents to travel better, it develops wall-less cells on it's insides, which makes the plants all mushy. This is fought by developing a quasi-bark structure on it's outside. The increment in the plant's processing power has caused it to manifest low quantities of something that resembles ectoplasm, but quite isn't yet.

Whether out of spite or desperation, some Irrisims decide to specialize in hunting the static, widespread grasslands rather than scavenge for scraps. They evolve incisor teeth to help clip trimmings of plant matter.

The main hurdle they face is with the almost omni-presence of toxic and/or electric flora on the surface grasslands. Their beam-eye grows slightly larger to focus stronger beams onto whatever they look at. Said beams are able to numb the neurons that generate electricity, or destabilize the delicate chemical compounds that make the plant toxic to begin with.

With this ability, they beam any plants in front of them that exhibit null-light, before consuming.

Since the Garrisim is a scavenger, it needs to be able to eat whatever it can.
More and more often, the food it runs across has died to ingesting poisonous compounds, either arcane or otherwise, from the various plants that grow on SII-2453-0.

In order to still eat these corpses without dying itself, the Garrisim has developed an organ that releases enzymes to break down the various toxins its typically exposed to.
>For Garrisims in locations where arcane sugar-producing plants are more common, and the herbivores and carnivores are more prone to arcane-sugar poisoning, the enzymes it produces specifically counter the portal-stabilizing dissaccharide.
>For Garrisims that live in locations where traditional/mundane toxins common place, they develop enzymes to break down those specific toxins.
These organs can only be 'trained' how to produce one or two enzymes in their life-time, usually triggered by whatever is most commonly ingested by the Garrisim. While in theory, they could produce enzymes for any other toxins, the lone Garrisim is not likely to feast in an area where multiple different sources of toxin occur. This 'training' is also most effective when the Garrisim is still relatively juvenile. The older they get, the harder it is to train the body to neutralize other toxins.

+WORLD EVENT+

"The Maw" - Part 2 of 2

after a short few million years, the whirlpool stops, having sucked up hundreds of meters worth of sea level and the temperature several degrees lowered.

Pressure of unknown proportion is now put on animals and plants alike, as the sea shores move away from the soil produced over the eons, and as the temperature makes the whole planet less inhabitable.

Consequences:
• FULL EVO STOP - any evolutions past this point will not be counted. actually there is a grace period of another half hour in case people are currently working on stuff
• New Topology: see image
• Global extinction event. Full rules will be posted seperately and should be read carefully.
>>
>>3101433
RULES

• Every ID has *4* rolls to allocate.
• They roll a 1d8 for any species they want to save, and if they meet the target number or above, the species survives. What a species target number is can be found bellow
• Any species under threat of extinction whichis not rolled for, or which has no rolls that meet its target number will be extinct after I say so (normally about 24 hours after the start of extinction)
• Any species can have as many rolls associated with it as people are willing to give it.

TARGET NUMBERS:
A target number is calculated by looking at traits of the species. You do not have to know your species' target number to roll for it, but it helps to decide what to roll for.
Here is how you can find out what number you gotta roll for a species to survive:

Start at a 6.
>If the species is an animal bigger than 10 cm, substract 1
>If the species is a land exclusive herbivore and has not evolved to deal with the plants being dicks, add 1
>If the species is a land exclusive carnivore, add 1
>If the species is a deep sea creature, subtract 1
>If the species is a plant, subtract 1
>If the species is in a dedicated symbiosis/parasitic relationship with an already saved species, subtract 1
>If the species depends on Quantum weirdness or is infinitely flat, add 2

Now if your number is above 8, reduce it to be 8.

Congratulations, this is the target number of the species which you have to roll on or above!

Probably this mate. If a species wasn't linked to and stated 'called' or 'nerfed' by Ostrich, then it is still viable, since there were no extinction events yet. All else you should attribute to popularity. That's just the way things work. A few of my evo's are neglected as well, but that's just the game.

>arbitrary rules are getting needlessly complicated and to abundant
If a creature uses null-light, ecto or pocket dimensions in a way that wasn't stated to be possible at the start of the thread, then it will likely be nerfed. Either when ostrich catches it in time, or when it gets a negative bonus during extinction. It's quite clear: saying paranormal stuff works in a way that it hasn't worked before is illegal.

If this doesn't clear things up, feel free to point out any specific evo's where you're unsure.

Irrisim is losing almost everything (1 pass),
Bloth is losing almost everything(1 pass),
Saggath is losing basically everything(0 passes),
Imash is little better off (2 passes),
Parasite line somehow got (2 passes),
and Thyrav cleans house with just about every one of its major branches having a surviving ancestor( 1 glitch, 2 thyruius, 4 spikegravs, 1 shyrav, 1 crystal, 1 arcane sugar, one blue thyrav)

Might I suggest that we keep all the Gen zero creatures?

Okay, closing all rolls.

Last action this thread:

I. ACTS OF MERCY
I will grant survival to one Irrisim-line post, one Bloth-line post and one Shaggeth-line post from before the extinction event.
Link me the creature you want saved and the first Irrisim-based, the first Bloth-based and the first Shaggeth-based posts linked to this one will survive.

For Thadez is a merciful god.

II. I LIKE COOL THINGS
Evo stop is still in session, as this thread is functionally over.
However, if after this point evos are made from surviving species, which fit the new apocalyptic landscape, I might use some of my favorite next thread. I might also not.

these three and nobody else :)

in case saving just the starters and discarding all other species is not allowed I'm choosing a secondary set

second post then, because all starters survive anyway

Ballpark for next thread?

>>3103751
I dunno yet. best way to keep up is the discord.
>>
>>3103688
Not holding the last three to a vote? Oh well.
Hopefully, by some grace of "I like cool things" we will see the gar-gar survive the hell that is this world to come.
>>
>>3103850
I think the last three should be a vote tbqh if not it's just everybody choosing their own shit.
>>
>>3104199
Yeah. Having it be one person feels cheaty.
>>
>>3103765
Can we have a permanent discord link? All the others have expired by now.

>>3105193
