"Sorry, Iriel, but orders are orders," one of your brethren told you. It was an armored man of four white wings, a spear held at his side as he holds your arm tightly with the other, but gently enough to not cause any discomfort. Needless to say, you're powerless against him, both physically, and more importantly, in divinity. Still, you put up some amount of struggle. "Shouldn't have lost that trumpet, you know," he reminded, throwing you from out of a golden gate and standing firm before you thereafter. Quickly, once you recovered from landing on the ground, the gate shuts behind him.

"What the hell man! It's probably that bitch Adana who took it!"

"Quite the tongue there, huh?" He sighs, "You're always the explosive type, not one to fit the term 'angel'. And besides, Adana was nowhere near you let alone present during the whole thing. She's probably somewhere down at Earth vistin' churches. Maybe we can get her help findin' what you lost."

"Tch, what am I going to do anyway?!"

"Good question. Give me your halo," eyeing the glowing ring above your head and reach out a hand. You take a few steps back in complete reluctance until he had to forcefully take it from you. "Really, now, the complicated one you are. Hope all of this is a good lesson, especially when you fall."

"You can't jus--" Before finishing your sentence, the ground that held you up in the sky disappeared. "Dammit gramps!" you yelled at him.

"Haha, good-luck, you'll need it out there. Oh!-- Remember to stroke orderly to fly!" he called out comically.

Disappointment sprouted within your chest as you watch the golden gate to heaven fade away into obscurity. But you soon realize that you can't invest yourself in your emotions, the loud howling of the air shouting into your ears, reminding you that you're falling. At first, you tried to keep yourself calm, attempting to correct yourself in an effort to fly. But the wind's speed is too forceful, that fact easily breaking down your short-lived focus and fast did you resort to flailing about.

The trip down to the mortal plane is, to simply say, painful. Knowing that you're out of options, you cover your body with your arms as much as you can no matter how stupid it sounded in your head. It didn't help once you're anticipation was met, crashing within a sea of trees, the branches smacking and stinging against you on your way. And upon landing on the ground did you groan excessively, letting out all the built-up frustration.

Initially, you crawled yourself against a tree's trunk to heal, recovering after a few hours. In the meantime, the idea of flying back to heaven came to mind, but you decided against it in fear of the consequences. You already suffered enough for today, and you can only wonder of the future. A sullen feeling at your back, you stand up, looking at your surrounding for a way out of this forest.

Flying up in the sky, this time with more control over your movement, you start searching for a church to crash at. It took longer than expected, passing over the countless amount of trees that can hide anything under its brush with the exception of God's eye, finally seeing a glimmer of human civilization in the distance after a monotonous trip.

To avoid drawing attention, you land at the edge of the forest, scouting out the city in front of you. It still impresses that mortals, with all their folly, could construct such a system almost akin to your home. Well, old home now, bitter in accepting it. And not only that, technology has sky rocketed faster than you can imagine, faster than the predictions of any angel up above. The use of magic got swamped out because of that. Barely any human remembers its use besides a select few, its knowledge cautiously procured over the times from Egypt, to Israel, and throughout the world. But all of that is snuffed out after a man came up with a mechanical stick that spits fire.

"It's stupid that they could discard such gift," you thought, finding incompetence in them. Truly, you did find their use of magic irreplaceable, but the fact that the advancement of technology actually achieved that feat boggles your mind. "Why wouldn't you send out a single magi in an army to deal with the enemy?-- Just conjure up fire at 'em, easy does it! Wasting your time with machinery is foolish if you can do the same job at the snap of your finger." Great your words sounds when noone's here to listen, forgetting that you can't do magic yourself. And quickly did that wave of truth pass over you, silencing you\ to save yourself the humiliation.

Awfully quiet, you move on to your original intention. Staying down, hiding behind boulders and abandoned house by the road when a car occasionally passes, you sneak your way across the land until you find a structure that seems for some amount of religious purpose. You freeze in place though. You can't barge in, there's probably humans inside.

>>
>>3067508

You sneak towards the back of the church, making sure to keep your wings - dirtied and stained with mud - from being seen. It was a tedious task as they are both huge to encompass your body size, and your one of the smaller angels to begin with. The tallest men you'd seen had their wings wider than five people your size if they're all laying flat on the ground horizontally, and that's not counting the seraphs. The more you think about it, you were kinda of jealous of their majesty, and the more you explore yourself within this short period of time brings to light how petty you can be.

Reaching behind the building, you stare into the glass window to peek inside. It seems that no one's here, at least, that's what you conclude. Behind you is a little shed, to your right is a backdoor to the church, but you don't know if it's unlocked or not. To test it, you jiggle the knob a bit, feeling the firm resistance against your shake. "Yup, it's locked..." feeling a raindrop hitting your head. "It's going to rain at a time like this?!"

Retreating towards the little shed, the sprinkle quickly turns into a heavy downpour as you make your way for cover. Something tells you that this is intentional but you have no knowledge to discern that possibility. Within the shed is an array of maintenance tools: hammers, shovels, rakes, and a pile of spare planks of wood for repairing any damages you assume. Taking a closer look at the detail of the church through the shed's window, it looks poor, weathered by nature and time. With nothing else to do than wait, you do just that, sitting in a corner as you listen to the rainfall.

Eventually, the rain went away, the sky regaining its clear picture, the sun making its rounds around the world in a stronger light than before. You get up, unwrapping your arms that are around your knees due to the lack of warmth, bumping your head into a shelf in which you exclaimed, "Ouch!" The church still looks empty when you take another look, but soon did an aroma seep through the rotted cracks of the shed. It was food; angels don't eat, however, now that much of your divinity is long gone you akin to a mortal.

Ignoring the aromatic temptation, you keep yourself in the shed until further notice. After a while, the sound of a carriage could be heard in the distance, a voice being heard outside after the following few minutes. It calls you to the shed's window once more for another look and from out of your shelter. It's a young girl, sweeping debris of the church's pavement with a broom. A silver cross dangles low over the girl's chest, her outfit consisting of a long-sleeved vest that ended at her lap, a white undershirt whose sleeves or equal in length in comparison to the former, and a skirt that reached pass her knees, all of which is in the standard colors of black and white.

You hide from her, ducking under the window till time passes. But foolishly, you forgot that your wings are raised in a clear display by the glass. The young girl soon notices, approaching the shed out of curiosity. "Hmm? Did a goose get trapped?" she guessed, getting closer with each step.

"No one's in here!" you shouted through the door of the shed, still keeping yourself down.

Cautiously, the girl opened the door to the shed, her eyes instantly meeting yours at the right-most wall of the structure. In turn, you slowly raise yourself up from the ground, fitting yourself in the corner where you're currently standing at. All was silent for a minute or two, the atmosphere tensing up into a quietness that's only broken by the tweeting birds, but still, not one of you dared to speak. Her expression's indifferent, held still with a slight smile while yours is cracking.

"Who... Who might you be?" the girl said.

"No one," you replied instantaneously.

She tries to reach one of your wings, and reflexively, you shift your body towards the side to avoid contact. A strange air comes about her now that you've interacted, like she's hiding something. Particularly under that dress.

"You see, uh, can I enter that church? I need a place to stay," you asked.

The girl's face went blank from thought, soon returning another smile that's genuine, "Sure-- Sure, that's fine! Could've just went through the front, but follow me for now."

She exits the door to the shed and leads you to the front of the building, leaving the broom in her hands on the way. The inside is a bit more barren than you envision, a small room for prayer and a living quarters right down the hall. The elevated stage within the central hall is empty, except for a podium that looks down upon the few rows of pews. This place is old, reconfirming your first impression, though, now inside, you can't help but feel a wary.

You reach a small kitchen, near the aforementioned corridor that housed the living quarters. The girl then pulls a seat from under a table. "Here, sit," she offered. "Your feet must be aching, telling from all the dirt on your soles."

"Eh?" looking down to your feet, thoroughly muddied. "Right," you roughly said thereafter, taking her offer and seating yourself.

"So, tell me. Those wings aren't fake, are they?" she questions, a twinkle in her eye.

You flutter your wings to show that they are, in fact, real. "Long story short, I lost an important trumpet. Got kicked out of home as a result."

"Trumpet?" the girl said, tilting her head.

"Yeah, a trumpet. One of, if I remember, seven? Twelve maybe? I don't know, but it's a really important item. Don't see why it needs to be such."

"Then you're in quite the awful situation. You are an angel, correct? Just for a clear answer."

"Do these wings look fake?" fluttering said limbs again.

"You are then. Good, good." For a moment, you though her eyes went a bit strange, like it's intentionally hiding a crazed look too hard. "Would you like tea?"

"I'm fine," you said.

"Oh well," putting a finger on her lip. She then changes the topic, "Where are you going to stay? You can keep yourself at home here if you would like."

"The surrounding area hmm~? As you can see, there's a huge forest by this church, and you need a carriage to reach any city or town out here. You can say that we're in the middle of nowhere."

"The middle of nowhere? Then why are you here by yourself?"

"This place is my home believe it or not. I ride my own carriage pulled by a single horse which is parked outside."

"What happened to your family?--"

Lavinia interrupted you with a somewhat unsettling giggle. "Sorry, please excuse me for that, ehaha~" Quickly, she recomposed herself, back into a proper image. "The church is a great power. You know that, Mr. Angel?"

"Name's Iriel," you corrected.

"Iriel," Lavinia repeated. "Anyways, my family had a... scuffle with them. One thing led to another and here I am. Thankfully, the church was merciful enough to spare me, the youngest daughter."

Slowly did you process her little snippet of a tale, raising a brow but abstaining from such a behavior to not show disrespect. Eventually, you asked if you can look around in which Lavinia gave permission to do so, watching you exit from out of the kitchen door.

Ignoring the first floor that held that main prayer room and the living quarters, there's a whole second floor, albeit slightly smaller than the former. It was a connected walkway, the square center opening a wide view to the room below it, giving a clear sight of every inch from the pews to the stage. The rails are full of dust, one drag of a finger able to blacken the tip. A few doors are present here as well, mostly leading to empty rooms, one of which is used for storage - covered up paintings and small furniture that's light enough for a woman to carry upstairs. Nothing was suspicious, or garnering enough curiosity to wander off. It is a small church, what did you expect anyway.

On your way down it seems that Lavinia went somewhere else, the kitchen completely empty except for an open cabinet and a tea kettle sitting on the stove, not even being heated. Through the window, it seems that enough time had passed for evening to arrive, the Sun descending downwards, half of it already hidden from over the horizon.

"Done?" In came behind you was Lavinia, making you jolt in surprise. Around her arms hanged a basket of bread, the other being full of ingredients to what you assume to be for cooking. You didn't even notice her footsteps, something that you can't ignore. Even your wings droop at the thought.

Which bedroom is mine?

You pay no mind to this occurrence. For now. "If it doesn't trouble you, is there a certain room you like me to take or is any of them free?"

"The room at the end of mine. Other than that, you can take any of them."

Thanking her you go down the hall, three bedrooms lined perfectly on the right. You took your pick and entered the middle door, the one that you suppose is next to Lavinia's. Inside are the basic accommodations, in humans standards that is: a sizeable bed that's somewhat big enough for two people, a closet in the corner of the room, and a dresser with a mirror hanging above it with a small shelf. A window that's covered with a red curtain, going well with the ashen brown wood that makes up the church, is built into the wall that faces outside. Of course, it isn't as good as heaven, but you must make do with it. You can't be picky with where you stay presently, especially when that girl is providing you with such. Even now, the wholesome smell of dinner fills the hall from her cooking, creeping under the bedroom door to stain your room with a delicious saltiness.

Re-entering the kitchen you take a seat once more, watching as Lavinia stirs a small pot with a wooden, a ladle laying on the counter beside her. You speak up, "How long have you've been living here?"

It takes a while for her to answer, as if she didn't hear you the first time even though she's right in front of you. Perhaps, she's too absorbed in her thinking, enough to drown out your voice. "Hmm?-- Oh, how long? Probably about five years or so, not a lot of people know this place, and if they do somehow come across here then they'll just mistake it for an abandoned building."

"It sounds like your hiding," you inquired with the upmost politeness, although, it might sounded pushy.

"... Yeah," Lavinia replied, going silent.

Your naturally rude nature makes conveying matters rather hard. "You alright?" you said, this time with a surely apologetic tone.

"I'm fine, I'm fine~ Just lost myself for a bit there, ahaha~"

You sigh in relief, happy that she isn't mad - mostly out of concern for your stay here. "How old are you? Er, not to be creepy or anythin'."

"Let's see," Lavinia mumbled, pausing her hand that stirred the pot. "eight-hundred... five-hundred... I'm nineteen years. For a woman, I'm actually pretty small for my age."

"Oh, I'm considered small as well," trying to discern her brief mumbles.

"Really? You look to be around six feet at least."

"I guess humans see things differently."

Lavinia giggles, parting a lock of her hair that swept pass her eye, the mane of the young girl a distinct blonde, akin to gold. It could be one of her more differentiating features, outstanding from her flatly colored black and white dress. The only other defining characteristic is the cross that chokes around her neck, and how she always keeps her eyes closed in a very, very relaxed manner.

Soon, the soup within the pot is ready. Lavinia grabbed two bowls from the cupboard, ladling the soup into them for the both of you. She grins as she sits down with you, setting your share before you and doing so with hers. The dusk has long passed, the moon readily above the tree line and hills at the side of the road. Dimly lit with an electric light in the ceiling, you quietly spoon the meal into your mouth. You noticed that, even though her eyes are nowhere near open, she's focused upon your figure, intensely so.

"Your wings are quiet beautiful, it is sad that they're thoroughly dirtied. Did I mention that the bath is pass the hall at the opposite end?"

"Yeah I saw the tub," you confirmed. "I'm rather proud of these, even though they aren't as good as my brethren."

"Yeah, an angel with a few anger issues," you joked, mainly to yourself. "Say, why don't you open your eyes?"

Lavinia took a while again, and just before you could repeat the question she answers. "... Is it strange?"

"Can you see? Obviously, you can navigate yourself just fine but isn't it troublesome to keep them closed?"

"Oh, so that's why you asked me. To be honest, that's a hard question to ask, but I have to say that it's out of... habit."

"Habit?"

"Yeah, I'm just used to being like this."

You don't press any further, however, the pauses in her sentences tell you something else. How can she even describe your wings or your height without seeing? It's doubtful that this is a habit, no human, although somewhat hard understand as a whole to you, will keep their eyes shut out of habit. That you know with greater confidence. But again, you keep these thoughts hidden as to not disrespect Lavinia, though, you do feel a tiny will to ask her more about it.

Finishing your bowl, Lavinia offered to take it up to the sink and wash it. Although you really have nothing to say in the matter because she'll take it anyway, you let her, the young girl taking the dishes to the sink to wash them. She hums, her voice audibly louder than the flow of water.

You go to the bath, finally washing off the grime and dirt off your body, especially your wings that are as dirty as a swamp bird. During this time you thought about how Lavinia didn't hear you before you came here, totally immersed in herself to a degree that she didn't notice you leave or even mention it once you were out the door. Strange girl she is, a sharp contrast to her youthful beauty.

~~~
Once you had dried yourself off with a towel, neatly folded and piled on a shelf along with a few others, you exit the bathroom to find the kitchen empty of Lavinia again. The hallway light is on while the kitchen's is off, sharing the same weak dimness due to the lack of electricity within this ancient church.
