You are a peasant lad of 19 years. Orphaned at a young age after your parents were executed for witchcraft. You've lived in a rural village within a outlying province of a sprawling empire all your life. Now you feel the itch of destiny.

During your teenage years you worked hard to overcome the stain your parents left on your reputation. You have:

1 - Served with the village militia. You've trained with simple weapons and built up your strength and endurance with various drills and exercises. You've had lots of experience with rough sparring and getting into scuffles with drunks and neerdowells. But havnt truly been in any life and death combat.

or

2 - Dedicated yourself to study with the goal of becoming a priest. You easily understand things others struggle to grasp. Furthermore you have been taught to read (extremely rare here for one of your social status). Over the years you have managed to read a few texts and learned much about the world, its people and histories. However your fitness has suffered, you are weaker and tire more quickly than most.

Honed by years of study your mind is sharp as a razor, when you start to think about things, patterns emerge that you can read and understand, very little escapes your notice. You have been given the gift of literacy. In a village of perhaps 200 or more souls, the number who know their letters can be counted on one hand.
-
It's high summer, the air is warm and the days work is done. What shall you do with yourself?
There are several places of interest in the village (vote decides where you go).

1 - The Chieftains longhouse: The chief and his family reside here. He gathers the elders for counsel on issues of governance and justice. Petitioners and travellers announcing their arrival in the village can be found here.

2 - The Tavern: Little more than a thatched barn with a few tables, a big fire and plenty of wine. The beating heart of the village nonetheless. A good place for rumours, gossip and the news of the day, to say nothing of a drink or three.

3 - The Temple: The house of the Sun King, the only god whose worship is permitted in the empire. Tended to by an old, narrow minded priest who imagines himself wise. The pious and the needy tend to congregate here.

4 - The Orchard: A small grove of fruit bearing trees just behind the palisade. Many of the young men and women not yet old enough for the tavern-keeper to sell them wine hang around here. It's a familiar place and there are many memories here.

I'm late!

Also, glad you're back Helios.
>>
You make your way to the orchard at a leisurely pace, enjoying the fine weather.

When you arrive there is a pleasant smell of late blossoms and early fruit. A group of 3 boys, your juniors by a year or two are sat beneath one of the larger trees, passing around a wineskin talking amongst themselves in hushed, conspiratorial tones.

From somewhere else nearby you can hear the sound of wood striking wood with considerable force and the murmur of several female voices, although you cant see them.

What do you do?

(knowledge checks reflect what the PC knows and as are not infallible and may expand with learning)

Worship of The Sun King is the official state religion of The Empire. It holds that The Sun King himself is the only divinity, the source of all light, warmth and life. The Sun itself, the dawn, summer, fire and gold are held to be sacred.

Telling the truth and forthright open conduct are considered high virtues and dishonesty and concealing ones motives are frowned upon.

The faith was spread at the point of a sword as The Empire expanded, with other faiths being often brutally eradicated centuries ago. Any form of religion that strays from orthodoxy is considered a serious crime, often with the ultimate penalty.

You recognize one of the boys, Lux the millers son and call out to him.

You cant say you know Lux too well, but he's a decent sort. Most in the village have viewed you with suspicion and hostility on account of your parents. Bullying and taunts have been a regular feature for you outside of the sanctity of the temple. Lux however, has at least been cordial and has even intervened in the bullying on your behalf more than once

“Fine day Lux. Suns blessing. What's that noise about?” You cock your head towards the regular cracking sound, with an interval of a few seconds.

“Ho novitiate” He greets you with a wave.
“I could care less, sounds like someone's trying to cut a tree down with a stick. Its been going on since we got here. Saw Lucia and some friend of hers wander that way not long ago though”.

The other two have conspicuously stopped talking since you drew close.
Lux hands you the wineskin. “Take a swig, it's my fathers. Stronger than the usual stuff and spiced”

You take a long swig. It's stronger than you expected and you start coughing as it burns down your throat. The boys laugh as you hand the skin back to Lux.

You thank Lux for the wine and head towards the noise.

As you approach you can hear the sound of two women giggling as well as the regular **thwack** that has been present since you arrived in the orchard.

The source soon becomes clear. A familiar young woman is repeatedly striking the trunk of an apple tree with a crude wooden sword with precise, sweeping motions, snarling and grunting with effort. Your childhood friend Kassa.

A few yards away, Lucia and another girl are watching giggling at Kassa and whispering to one another.

Kassa seems to be ignoring them.

-You've known Kassa as long as you can remember. With her pale skin, blue eyes and yellow hair, she stands out amongst the dark haired, olive skinned imperial people, a constant reminder of her heritage. Her people are 'Raiders' nomadic tribes of warlike horse-people from the north, her father appeared at the village gates many years ago with a baby Kassa in his arms, offering his sword unto death to whomever gave them shelter. The village chief, seeing his worth as a bodyguard and enforcer, accepted.

After your parents were executed, Kassa's father looked after you until you became a novice at the temple. Both of an age and outcasts amongst the other children, the two of you played together and grew together, constant companions. Although of late theres a tension between you that's new. Your heart races when she touches you, despite all the times you wrestled when you were small and you keep catching her looking at you when she thinks you dont notice and flushing red in the cheeks when you do.-

-Lucia you know less, one of the tavern-keepers daughters. She seems to regard herself as something of a 'queen-bee' amongst the girls and has often mocked and ostracised you for your parents crimes and Kassa for her heathen heritage.-

Kassa is angry, that much is obvious. She has always had a short and violent temper and has spent a day in the stocks for acting on it more than once. She seems to be channelling her obvious frustration at Lucia and her friend into her blows, which grow more and more intense.
After a particularly powerful hit that shakes the whole tree, an under-developed apple falls from one of the branches and lands squarely on Kassas head. Prompting gales of laughter from the other girls at her expense.

Kassa stops swinging her wooden sword and glares at the tree trunk, her fists clenched and body taught. But she doesn't turn to acknowledge the laughter.

You decide that this is an opportune moment to announce your presence.

“Suns blessing girls” You incline your head politely at Lucia and her friend.

“Kassa” she turns at the sound of your voice and meets your gaze. But can't seem to find her words.

Lucia turns to you, disdain dripping from her voice.

“Ah the little priest, Suza and I were just wondering, is it true that you had to promise to marry straw-hair over there for her father to give you a roof over your head?”

Kassa turns bright red and opens her mouth but Lucia is too quick.

“and that you joined the temple to get away from her?”

Both girls burst out laughing once again.
Kassa grinds her teeth, murmuring curses and picks up the fallen apple, squeezing it so hard her knuckles turn white, she turns to Lucia taking aim...

1. Try and calm things down. This wouldn't be the first time Lucia has baited Kassa into trouble.

2. Let things play out

“Kassa stop!” you blurt as she winds her arm back, she pauses.
In your mind you imagined a righteous denunciation of Lucia's slander, full of fire and the force of the Sun's holy temple. Leaving her ashamed and humbled with a grateful Kassa admiring your deft social riposte.

Unfortunately your tongue was unable to rise to your the level of your imagination.

“Lucia you.....such cruel a..and..and untrue words are a..against...”

You stutter and stumble over every other word and cant seem to look her in the eye, unintentionally looking at the floor then glancing over her shoulder, then back to the floor.

She cuts you off.

“By the dawn you are pathetic. Can you imagine this one preaching the holy word!? He'd turn people to heresy not away from it!”

You cant seem to think of a response and stare silently at the floor in embarassment.

“Perhaps that's why his parents turned to sorcery, they wanted to cast a spell to make their son into a real man.”

A cold, deliberate laugh all barb and no mirth escapes her lips, then an apple strikes her in the face with such force that the fruit splits apart.

Lucia's hands fly to her face, her laugh abruptly silenced. She stumbles back before her heel catches on the root of a nearby tree and she falls backward. There's a sharp crack as the base of her skull hits a sharp rock hidden in the undergrowth.

Lucia lies still for a moment, her head jutting up at a painful angle, then her legs begin to tremble uncontrollably.

Suza screams.

Kassa drops her wooden sword. “I...I didn't mean to. Gods! It was just an apple, I wanted to give her a black eye not...”

You have some knowledge of the healing arts from your studies, you rush to Lucia and kneel beside her. The point of the rock has pierced the back of her neck where the spine joins her skull and blood is flowing freely.

You put your hand to her neck, feeling for a pulse as you have seen the healers at the temple do. There's a faint erratic rhythm, which promptly stops beneath your fingers.

“I...I think she's dead”

Suza screams even louder than before, then turns and runs in the direction of the main thoroughfare.

“Fuck fuck fuck fuck, what do I do what do I do!?” Kassa exclaims , her voice thick with panic.

She grabs you by the shoulder

“I've got to run, they'll hang me for this!”

What do you do?

1. Go to the chief, tell him the truth. Perhaps they will show mercy.

2. Help Kassa flee the village.

Calm her down, it was an accident and Suza also saw what happened.
There is no way that she could have done that intentionally.
But maybe she will have to leave the village for her own sake anyway. Even an accidental murder will land her in very hot water. But she would at least go a free woman and not run like a criminal.
>>
Even though no one has asked for a knowledge check here, I feel compelled to drop a freebie.

The punishment for murder is death by hanging. Whilst you can argue that Kassa didn't intend to kill Lucia, she certainly deliberately attacked her and the chief may well not see the distinction. Furthermore Kassa is not popular in the village with much talk of her being a heathen, holding to the faith of her people rather than the empire. Many others will hold her heritage against her, as they have lost relatives, property or both to attacks by her kinsmen.

To add to her difficulties, the tavern-keeper is a well liked and influential man. He's not likely to use that influence in Kassa's defence.

Your parents were burned alive for witchcraft. you only have the most vague memories of them, they were executed whilst you were very young and you've never had the nerve to try and find out exactly what they did. Although you've been told that you were 'saved' from them.
>>
>>3066331
You lock eyes with Kassa.

“I'm coming with you.” Your tone belies a resolve you wish you had a few moments before.

“You can't!” Kassa wails. “If you help me you'll share my guilt, they'll hang you too.”

She's right, to help a killer evade justice goes against everything you've been taught at the temple. Not just the laws of men but those of the Sun. There will be no going back from this.

But...

You imagine Kassa bound and being led to the gallows or shivering on some roadside alone and hunted. Either way you'd never see her again and that seems worse than any sin.

“I can and I am. We don't have time to argue, if we're quick we can be gone before Suza tells her tale and they start looking for you in earnest.”

Kassa composes herself and nods. “If we're for the road, we should go to my fathers. He's away for a few days, but there's supplies, furs and weapons. He taught me to always be ready to run if the village turned against us. I have a pack ready.”

She's right to a point, fleeing into the wilds with just the clothes on your back is a fools notion but Kassa's home is probably one of the first places the villagers will look for her.

What do you do?

1. Flee the village as quickly as possible.

The two of you creep out of the orchard, giving the area where Lux and his friends were drinking a wide birth. You manage to make it back to the village proper without being seen.
Hiding between two small hovels, you glance up and down the street. There doesn't seem to be any more activity than usual, no one searching or vengeful mobs forming.

Trying to look as inconspicuous as possible you cross the street and creep between houses until you reach Kassa and her father's dwelling. You remember it well, although you haven't been back here in months.

Once you're inside Kassa pushes a heavy wooden table against the door, then piles two stools on top of it. Before climbing a ladder up to the loft and rummaging around in the straw bedding.

She tosses down a large pack, bundled with various furs and other items you cant make out in the indoor gloom.

“You take that” she orders before re-emerging from the loft.

You can see she's pulled on a studded leather jerkin and is wearing a dagger at her belt.

She reaches above the hearth and pulls down the sheathed sword that hangs above it, fixing it to her belt. Then hands you a spear that was propped up behind the cupboard.

As you heave the pack onto your back and test the weight of the spear you hear voices outside.

Theres a harsh rapping of a clenched fist at the door.

“Kassa, come out and face justice” a man's voice you don't recognize.

The door thumps as someone throws their weight against it.

“It's barred. Give me that hatchet.” the voice demands.

What do you do?

There's a small window overlooking the back. With luck, you'll be able to get from the roof, over the top of a back wall and into an alley running behind the houses.

Kassa manages to push out the wooden bars blocking egress and pulls herself through, you push the pack through first then follow.
A small jump is required to make it over the wall.

Kassa goes first and makes the jump with little difficulty, landing quiet as a cat. You throw your pack to her.

You ready yourself and jump as best you can, you fall short of the top of the wall but manage to stop yourself by gripping the lip with one hand. Kassa quickly hauls you up.

You can hear the sound of wood splintering, the group around the front are clearly still trying to chop through the door and don't seem to have heard your escape.

You cross to the other side of the wall and hurry down the alley, the sun is going down and there's not much light left. Thankfully you seem to have the alley to yourselves.

From here you could make a straight run to the northern gate of the village palisade. They shouldn't have shut the gate yet and you might be able to make it out if they haven't posted guards.

Alternatively you could try the stables, there's likely to be draft horses there and you know the basics of riding. You could try and steal some horses, you'd be able to move much faster but it'd be harder to hide on the road and you may be caught.

You balk at the thought of adding thievery to your already heavy conscience but it may be the difference between life and death.

In the failing light, the two of you are able to make it to the stables without incident.
The door is still open, so its likely the stablehands aren't far away.

You creep inside, a lamp has been lit within casting flickering light and shadows throughout the room.

There are eight horses here, six of which are the draft horses you'd expect to find. But 2 of which are unusual.

The first is a magnificent white charger, a warhorse if ever you've seen one. The tack is of the highest quality and set up to accommodate weapons. The second is more modest, the tack worn but well made, also clearly a horse meant for riding rather than labour.

“Those two will probably be trained” Kassa whispers.

“Used to their owners, difficult for us to take. I say we take two draft horses, then cut the rest free and spook them to create a distraction.”

Kassa rummages inside the pack you're carrying and hands you a large, well made knife. Raider-steel. No doubt her fathers. The smiths of The Empire have not managed to uncover the secret of making it and the raiders themselves do not trade. It'd fetch a high price in any market.

She unsheathed the dagger at her waist and the two of you get to work cutting the horses free, then setting your pack on one of the draft horses. As you approach the white charger, it nickers, then neighs loudly in alarm tossing its head back and forth.

“Is someone there!?” A male voice calls out.
Footsteps approach the entrance to the stable and you see the flickering of another lantern approaching the doorway, your only exit!
Kassa ducks into a corner to the right of the doorway.

You only have moments before someone walks through the door what do you do?

1. Try to hide.

2. Attempt to talk your way out.

3. Mount the horse and make a break for it.

Success!

You dash to the left of the door, so you'll be out of the line of sight of anyone walking through the door. Fortunately, there's a large pile of fresh straw there its loose and easy to quickly cover yourself enough that you wont be noticed at a glance.

You're just in time, as a stablehand walks through the door with a lantern in one hand.
He looks around at the horses, noticing the mare you had loaded the pack onto.

“What are you doing girl, who cut you free? What's this?”

He starts inspecting your pack, his back is to the door as well as you and Kassa.
Kassa begins creeping towards him, dagger in hand....

1. Gesture at Kassa to stop. Sneak out the door leaving the horses and pack behind.

2. Move to back up Kassa, ready your spear.

You emerge from your hiding place, brandishing your spear.

“Easy there friend, we don't want to hurt you.”
Kassa looks at you as if you've gone mad, but plays along.

“We need to take two of these horses, they aren't worth your life. Keep quiet and there's no need for this to get bloody.”

The stablehand looks at you, then looks at Kassa who has put the dagger back in her belt and drawn her sword in one fluid motion and is holding it above her head ready to strike.

“The whole village is looking for you two. If I shout for help a dozen men will come running. It'll go easier for you if you give yourselves up.”

With her barbarian features and violent reputation, you decide that it's better to let Kassa play the thug. Her father subjected her to gruelling training in their people's traditional combat techniques as she was growing up, something the other villagers did not fail to notice. Between that and her temper getting her into brawls, she is a far more formidable combatant than any decent, sun-blessed woman should be.

You incline you're head towards Kassa.

“You could shout for help and maybe we'd be caught, but before the help arrives you'd have to deal with her.”

Kassa picks up what you're trying to do and fixes him with an icy stare.

“If he weren't here I'd already have opened you up from groin to gizzard.” She drops the point of her sword, then with a speed your eyes can barely follow slashes upward a foot in front of the stablehand. It's clear she can handle the blade.

Sweating profusely, the stablehand stammers a surrender before slowly lowering his lantern to the floor.

You look around for something to tie and gag him with, but whilst he is still crouching on the floor Kassa lunges forward and smashes the pommel of her sword to his temple.

The stablehand falls face down, unconscious but still breathing.

You give Kassa an accusing look.

“We don't have time! Someone else could be through that door any moment!”

Do you?

The two of you quickly cut the rest of the horses free and mount up on the two draft horses you've prepared.

You take your spear and slap one of the horses with the blunt end as hard as you can muster.

The horse neighs in pain then bolts from the stable, with the others quickly following suit in a desperate scramble of hooves. You and Kassa manage to keep your own horses under control... barely.

As you are leaving the barn you notice the fleeing horses knocked over the stablehands lantern, some straw has caught fire and it is quickly spreading. The stablehand is still sprawled across the floor unconscious, perhaps he will wake before the flames and smoke overtake him...or perhaps not.

You could try and drag him clear of the barn but that would cost you precious time, the horses bolting has surely attracted attention.

Or you could flee and leave him to the flames.

“What are you doing!? We have to go now!” shouts Kassa.

“I cant just leave him to die” you shout back

Kassa anxiously glances up the street in the direction of the gate and back to you, but doesn't leave.

By the time you reach the fallen stablehand, the building is truly aflame and you cough at the thick smoke.

You grab him by one arm and attempt to drag him clear of the building.

87 - 20 = 67 Success!

Calling on a reserve of strength you never knew you had, you drag the unconscious stablehand from the burning building. You've surely saved his life as he barely stirs the whole time and would've burned before he woke.

When he is clear, you fall to your knees coughing and spluttering as you try to clear the smoke from your lungs. You look for your horse but it seems to have bolted in fear of the flames, taking your pack with it!

Kassa grabs you and pulls you to your feet.

"Normally I have a weakness for your kind-hearted foolishness but not when we are FLEEING FOR OUR LIVES!"

She practically carries you to her horse and helps you mount up behind her.

"Hold on tight" she orders as you wrap your arms around her waist.

She spurs the horse on and it breaks into a hard gallop, neighing in protest.

You struggle to stay conscious yourself after your exertion and lungfulls of smoke. Houses and shouts of the villagers fly past in a blur as Kassa pushes the draft horse to its limits.

Then you are past the palisade and onto the country road. The lights of the only home you've known disappearing behind you as the two of you ride into the night......

Part 2 begins!

You've been riding by the moonlight for what seems like hours and have lost all sense of where you might be. If you had a clearer head you might be able to gain some sense of direction from the stars, but you are exhausted after the days events and still woozy from the smoke inhalation.

Kassa took your horse off the road some time ago and your current condition notwithstanding, you're glad she has the reins as you aren't sure you could keep the horse going steady cross-country at night.

You begin to feel the whipping of branches and leaves against your body before she brings the horse to a stop. It looks like you've stopped in the middle of a thicket that should conceal you to a point, even in daylight.

With your pack and its furs, food and other supplies lost during the stable fire you don't have anything you could use to make a camp. But you could try making a small campfire. Its summer and the conditions are mild, so you wont freeze to death overnight without one. But it'll be unpleasant.

1. Try to make a small fire. You'll be more comfortable, be able to see your immediate surroundings and stand a better chance of getting a restful sleep. But if anyone is out there looking for you, it'll be very visible.

2. Try to sleep as best you can without a fire. You'll be much less visible, but might not be able to rest effectively.

Reasoning that waking up cold is probably better than waking up dead due to being found by vengeful villagers, you decide against a fire.

You and Kassa find the most comfortable part of the undergrowth you can before huddling up together for warmth. Fortunately its a mild night with no sign of rain.

Its too dark for you to see her face, but Kassa puts her arm across your chest and rests her head against your shoulder.

“Thank-you for today” She murmurs

“If you hadn't been with me, I'd probably be dead. I owe you my life and I'll never forget it.”

You whisper some platitude that it wasn't such a big deal and it was just the right thing to do.

“No” her voice firmer

“You gave up everything, the temple, your home, everything you've been studying for these past few years. All without a second thought, to save me from my own stupid mistakes. I can never repay you enough.”

(Kassa's opinion of you has undergone a major increase. She will protect and defend you even at great risk to herself)

(You now have a strong bond with Kassa: Your childhood history together on top of recent shared experiences and the actions you've taken to help her have forged a close relationship. You will gain a minor bonus to rolls made to help or defend her and a minor malus to rolls that would cause her harm. In addition, should any serious harm befall her you have a chance of suffering major emotional distress which will have a negative impact on most actions)

Comforted by Kassa's words and presence, you drift off to sleep.

Roll d100 for effective rest. -30 for no bedding, blankets, warmth or shelter of any kind.
(being unable to sleep will provide a small, cumulative malus to all rolls until you get a good rest)
>>
>>3068745

What are the immediate surroundings ans where we coyld reach before news of our deeds to get some supplies? Do they use corriers or birds to inform of things like this or that is beyond our village level?

We could have failed to sleep because we were thinking about this.....and absolutely not because of the whatever is pressed against our back
>>
>>3068775
>Knowledge check.
Knowledge is that the part where we lose most warmth is the head, and the thing that transmits coldness the best is the ground, so pad the ground and wrap our heads in preparation against it.
>>
You awaken to the sound of birdsong, the sun is up and it seems like a warm day. But you didnt sleep well at all under the stars. You're groggy and ache all over from sleeping on the ground.

(You suffer a -5 malus to all rolls until you get a good sleep. This malus will double for every day you go without rest)

Kassa is beside you, evidently having just woken herself. She doesn't look to have slept much better than you. Fortunately the horse you stole is grazing just a few metres away.

Your stomach rumbles. The two of you haven't eaten since lunch yesterday and you have no food. What vittles you had being lost along with your pack.

>>3068775
>Knowledge check.
>What are the immediate surroundings?
You are in a small thicket, you could walk the circumference of it in about 30 mins. The surrounding area appears to be farmland with no obvious landmarks. You've seen maps of the surrounding region and might be able to work out where you are if you explore the area more to get your bearings.

>Do they use couriers or birds to inform of things like this or that is beyond our village level?

Riders are usually sent with important messages, you aren't sure if they would have been sent overnight though. There aren't many smaller settlements in this region, as anything not fortified to some degree is a target for raids.

>>

>Do we have any valuables on us that we could sell to buy something else?

A draft horse (stolen) - moderate value
A studded leather jerkin - low/moderate value
A Raider Steel long knife - high value
A Raider Steel dagger - high value
A Raider Steel sword (engraved) + scabbard - extremely high value. Kassa is unlikely to be willing to sell this.

Raider steel weapons and armor are highly sought after in The Empire as they cannot be manufactured and trade with the tribes in the north is extremely rare. So the only aquisitions are following military defeats of the tribes (also rare). As such they command a high price, but the sale of such items would probably be remarked upon and talked about.

The two of you thoroughly explore the thicket and it seems The Sun has finally smiled down upon you.

You find a small rock spring hidden away which looks clean, The Sun King teaches that it is best to purify water with heat before drinking, but as that isn't an option here you'll have to make do. You don't have anything to store the water in, so you both drink as much as you can.

You also manage to find numerous nuts, berries and mushrooms. As well as a chewable leaf you know to have healing properties, which you stash away for later. You eat your fill and store the remainder in an empty saddlebag.

(You are no longer hungry or thirsty and have enough food to last one day. Inventory updated.)

Finally, you make a more unsettling discovery.

In what looks to be the dead centre of the thicket, a small menhir stands, perhaps four feet in height. It's clearly man-made and appears very old. Arranged in a precise pattern around the menhir are three concentric circles of small bones, likely from rodents. The stone itself is unnaturally cold to the touch.

What do you do?

what do we know about such stones?

Very little. They have been found dotted around the northern regions of The Empire, usually in ancient woodland. They are thought to have been erected by some previous inhabitants of these lands a very long time ago for reasons unknown.

Officially they are considered heathen monuments and a reward is usually given if the discovery of one is reported to the nearest temple, at which point the faithful are despatched to destroy it and consecrate the ground upon which it stood.

Unoffically, communities near where one of these stones are discovered are whispered to have an increase in nightmares, lunacy and suicide until the stone is destroyed. Some believe they are a focus of witchcraft.

You kneel down, carefully not to disturb the bones. The precise nature of their arrangement and that they haven't been moved by weather or other animals suggests to you that they were put here very recently, which makes you very uncomfortable.

You examine the stone itself, there are markings worn faint by time. You run your fingers across the cold surface, trying to trace them.

The markings seem to depict three moons above a stylized, leafless tree. In all your reading you've never come across this symbol before. But something at the back of your mind, a memory from when you were just an infant....

Its dark and cold, you're small and scared. Your parents are with you, standing within a circle of three gigantic stones. Your mother singing in some strange, lilting language you don't understand. In one hand she brandishes a knife, she raises her hands to a full moon hanging in the sky above you.

Your father is next to her, in his arms he holds a struggling lamb. As the your mother's song reaches a crescendo he holds the lamb out to her, baring its throat. She slashes it without any hesitation and the lamb screams, an awful cry that hurts your ears, you close your eyes.

The next thing you know your father is holding your head, forcing your mouth open and your mother is pouring a warm, metallic-tasting liquid down your throat, the lambs blood. You gag and try and spit it up but you can't help but swallow some.

Your attention is drawn upward as the full moon splits into three identical discs that seem to gaze down on you like eyes.

The memory fades and you shudder, the cold of that night suddenly with you now.

Kassa is stood next to you, transfixed by the markings on the menhir.

“Three moons” She says unsteadily

“I've seen this” She continues, her expression uncharacteristically uneasy.

What do you do?

1. Put some distance between you and the menhir. This place feels wrong.

2. Talk to Kassa about what just happened.

You ask Kassa what she means

“My mother she....” She hesitates and grips the hilt of her sword tightly with one hand.

“She did things to me when I was small, bad things. I don't remember most of it, but....”

“I remember one night... ***Kassa describes a ritual that is almost identical to the one you just remembered yourself, three moons and all***”

Kassa is visibly shaken by the recollection.

“My father found out, he didn't like it. He and my mother fought and he took me far away, to your village. I was too young to remember most of it and he would never talk about it.”

You tell her about your own recollection.

“You aren't just saying that are you?” She looks into your eyes, she knows you well enough to know you wouldn't lie about something like this.

“I think we need to get out of here and away from that thing.” She indicates the stone

“When we were riding last night I didn't really know where I was heading other than away from the village. I was just letting the horse decide and urging it forward. It can't just be a coincidence that we ended up here, that we both have the same memory of the same ritual...”

She looks around as if she expects monsters to spring from the bushes at any moment.

“I want to leave... now”

1. Try and comfort Kassa and calm her down. There has to be a reasonable explantion.

2. Get out of the thicket to the nearest suitable place you can find to find your bearings.

You quickly make your way back to your horse and out of the thicket.

As you travel you try to comfort Kassa, offering her reassurance that the mind and the memory can play tricks and that things may not be as they seem.

Inwardly though, you cant help but agree with her. There seems to be too much the coincidence. You had always wondered what brought Kassa's father to the village, but never asked as it seemed a sensitive topic. Now you know why.

You arrive at a tall dry-stone wall separating two fields. You're well clear of the thicket, which is visible in the distance, now ominous and forboding. The sun on your face is warm and pleasant, but cant quite banish the mornings events from your mind.

You think you can see the high road to the east and some hills to the south which have given you a better sense of your position. You think you are a few miles north of the village.

Where do want to go?

1. North – the road will eventually lead to Nilsfort. A fortified town and castle on The Empires northern border. Its the command centre for a string of smaller fortifications that guard the south from incursions from Raiders. Beyond being the trackless northern steppe and Kassa's people. Being at the edge of the civilized world, its a rough town filled with hard-bitten soldiers, outcasts, fortune seekers and anyone else crazy or desperate enough to risk the frontier life. You wouldn't be the first fugitives to end up there.

2. South – Deeper into the Empire. The climate will get warmer and the land safer, but expect the law to be more concerned about fugitives. The next major settlement is Tinholm, a major regional trading hub and bustling city. There would surely be work for a scribe there and its big enough to disappear in. Although Kassa's barbarian features would stand out there far more, to say nothing of a woman openly carrying a sword.

3. West – To the sea. There's a few fishing villages dotted along the coast but no major settlements for quite a distance. It's possible you might be able to find a ship that would take the two of you on.

In regards to the authorities, Nilsfort is the place where Kassa is least likely to stand out. Raiders who have been taken prisoner, the occasional mercenary and residents with mixed northern/imperial heritage are more common there.

Although the coast, by virtue of having no large settlements will also not have much in the way of organized law enforcement.

You decide to make your way west to the coast. There's less in the way of major settlements that way so you should be able to avoid the authorities.

The coast is a few days ride away.

You ride until late afternoon, keeping off the road for the most part but keeping view of it in the distance. You only see one horse and cart heading east for the day.

As the sun begins to set you notice what appears to be an inn in the distance. It looks like the only structure for miles around, someone has just lit the lantern outside.

What do you do?

1. Visit the Inn. You don't have any money, but perhaps you can make a deal with the innkeeper to trade or work for room and board.

2. Spend another night under the stars, its not ideal but its the safest option.

You make for the inn. It's a fairly large structure and solidly built in stone considering its relatively isolated location.

As you get closer you notice a portly drunk man staggering away from the inn towards you. You cant imagine where he's going to go on foot at this hour. There's nothing but hills and fields for miles.

“Perhaps he's so drunk he lost his horse” Kassa snorts, then adds more coldly. “Perhaps we should see if he has any money. We need it more than he does.”

The thought of robbing this poor fool doesn't sit well with you. But Kassa has a point, you do need money. The guarantee of hot food, wine and a warm bed to sleep in are powerful incentives.

“We might be desperate Kassa but we are not common brigands!” you admonish her.

“You say 'brigand' I say 'practical', we're outlaws now and we have to take what we can get whilst we can get it. Who knows when we'll get another such chance.”

You give her your best disapproving look.

“Fine.” she rolls her eyes

“But if the innkeep wants us to muck out the stables in exchange for a room, you can do it.”

The drunk totters on past, oblivious to your conversation.

You reach the inn. The sounds of merriment can be heard from inside and the warm glow of numerous lanterns and a roaring fire.

As you tie your horse to a hitching post alongside a number of other horses, you notice something. One of the horses is familiar, one of the riding horses from the stable back at the village, the darker more well worn mount, but finer than yours.

You cant imagine who in the village this horse might belong to, perhaps a traveller passing through rather than a courier delivering news of your transgressions. But you cant be sure.

Feeling considerably more nervous than you did before, but not wanting to spend another night freezing in the mud you open the tavern door and step inside....

Tough choice, in all honesty. On the one hand, the fact that we've found someone who came from the village is setting off immediate warning bells. Especially since we went possibly the least desirable/predicable direction they'd think we'd take.
On the other hand, if we go in alone, we might be fine. Unless we are in full sunbro worshiping garb, we probably look like any other Imperial. Combined with the fact that a riding horse more likely belongs to a traveler than someone we know from the village, we have a solid chance of not being recognized. The dangerous thing is Kassa getting spotted; as "Keep a lookout for a Northern Raider Girl with a sword" was probably what the owner of the horse was treated to before leaving the village, and is far more noticeable than we are.

Knowledge check, OP. What was to the East of our village? More for my own curiosity than anything.

The quest continues...

The tavern is warm and cosy, with numerous small tables haphazardly arranged around a roaring central hearthfire. Some kind of stew simmers in a large pot. You haven't had a hot meal in some time and it smells delicious.

There are less than a dozen patrons, a mix of travelling merchants, a shepherd or two and a rough looking man sat alone who stands out. He's tall and scarred, salt and pepper hair shorn close to his scalp and a short-sword at propped up by his chair give him the look of a sellsword or bounty-hunter. A serving girl moves between the tables, topping up pitchers of wine and passing out bowls of stew. Behind a short bar against the far wall, the aged bald inn-keeper watches you whilst cleaning a clay cup with his well-stained apron.

Other than the innkeeper, your entrance doesn't seem to attracted much attention.

What do you do?

1. Go to the bar, try and trade with the inkeep for food and beds (you have no money and will have to try to trade something from your inventory or offer to work).
2. Find a quiet table, try and take a full measure of the room and the patrons first.

Trying to look as casual as possible, the two of you make your way to an empty table in a more dimly lit corner of the room.

Considering the relative size of the inn and the distance from any obvious dwellings, you reason that this stretch of road must be quite busy with travellers and merchants etc going back and forth from the coastal villages stopping off here to spend their coin for the place to stay in business.

There are two men, each sat at seperate tables with what you assume are their servants who have the look of merchants, being slightly better dressed and more well groomed than the average.

The serving girl approaches your table, her eyes noticably lingering on Kassa and at the sword she carries. Yet her tone is warm and welcoming.

"You two look like you've been dragged backwards through the bushes! What can I get you to take the edge off the day?"

Before you have a chance to explain your financial predicament, the rough looking man appears at your table and sits down, bringing an empty clay pitcher with him.

"You're late my friends! Looks like the road from Nilsfort has not been kind. Did thieves beset you?"

He turns to the serving girl

"A bowl of stew apiece for my friends here with some of that rye bread and a bigger pitcher of wine."

He hands her a handful of coins and gives you a reassuring look.

You've never seen this man before in your life and from the way Kassa's hand has slowly made its way to the handle of her dagger, neither has she.

What do you do?

1. Play along.

You smile and thank the stranger, laughing that indeed the road has been hard to you and you've had to sleep in the woods without shelter and forage for food.

You try to discreetly gesture to Kassa to take her hand from the dagger in her belt but she either doesnt pick up on the signal or chooses to ignore it. This doesnt escape the strangers notice.

Once the serving maid has turned and walked to the bar to see to your order he addresses you in a low voice.

"Relax, I know who you are and if I'd wanted to claim the price on your heads I'd have done it already".

You'd suspected that this might be the case, but the confirmation makes the anxious knot in your stomach tighten.

"Fortunately for you, the chief of your village is too much the miser. The price isnt worth my time."

You make eye contact with Kassa and reach over to gently remove her hand from her dagger, she is resistant at first and looks at you as though you're a fool but finally relents and releases he grip.

The stranger laughs

“She has more sense than you lad, to keep a weapon ready with an armed stranger of uncertain motive. But as I say, I'm not here to do you harm.”

He introduces himself as Menelaou. A one-time soldier in the Imperial Army and of late a sell-sword. He explains that the company he serves with, 'The Late-comers' were travelling by boat from the south when they were beset by a storm. They lost many a man overboard and their damaged vessel was forced to limp to the coast and run itself aground near a fishing village.

His captain has sent him out to seek recruits to replace the ones lost in the storm and to get the lay of the land.

“The word in your village was that you...” he looks at Kassa

“Are handy with that sword and a little too eager to use it.” he grins

Kassa doesn't respond

“And you” he turns back to you

“You know letters, numbers, maps and histories and the like”.

You thank Menelaou for his offer but tell him that this is a big decision and that you are tired from the road and you need to talk it over privately with Kassa.

Menelaou seems happy with this and even agrees to pay for a room for you tonight. He tells you to have a decision for him at dawn tomorrow as he will need to be on his way by then.

You spend the remainder of the evening drinking spiced wine and filling your belly with the rich, piping hot stew. The mercenary regales you with tales of his adventures. He sketches for you a remarkable career, where he and the Later-comers have travelled the world battling pirates, scouring brigands from the Imperial highways, defending nascent colonies on the new continent from hordes of bloodthirsty natives. You find yourself being caught up in his swashbuckling tales, imagining yourself and Kassa as daring adventurers, bringing civilization to the dark corners of the earth and righting wrongs were the regular authorities are unwilling or unable to do so themselves.

Eventually you and Kassa make your way to the small room in the rafters Menelaou has rented for you. You make yourselves comfortable on the straw and firs that serve as a bed and turn to Kassa.

“So what do you think of his offer? Do you think he's telling the truth.”

She responds without any hesitation.

“I think we should take it. Fate smiled on us when we ran into this man. Protection from the law, a living, travel and adventure! Maybe we could even be rich.”

She's clearly excited at the prospect of living by the sword.

Agreeing with Kassa and reasoning that in truth you have little choice but to sign up given your current circumstances. She seems pleased that you agree, you're sure she never much wanted to be a farmer back home anyway.

With a full belly and the strong wine settling in your head you quickly drift off to sleep and into a dream...

You find yourself back in the thicket with the menhir, only now you are alone. Twilight has settled and you can make out little but the dark shapes of the trees in the gloom. A cold wind seems to wind around you, filling the air with the sound of rustling leaves and creaking branches.

A branch snaps somewhere behind you and you whirl around to find the source. In the gloom it looks as though some of the smaller gnarled, leaf-bare trees have uprooted and begun to walk towards you. As they get close you realise they are not trees at all but two charred and skeletal corpses. Your parents.

Terror rooting you in place you cannot move or look away as they reach out for you, fleshless jaws creaking and clacking in a mockery of speech.

Something seizes your wrist and pulls you away and into a run, from her flowing blonde hair you can see that its Kassa. You sprint through the trees as hard and fast as you have ever run in your life until the two of you reach an illuminated clearing.

Three gargantuan menhirs encircle the largest tree you have ever seen. It's surface is smooth and white, more akin to bone than wood and thousands of branches stretch out hundreds of feet in every direction, seeming to fill the sky. The broken light of three full moons shines down between the boughs.

The branches are not empty, countless people hang upside down by their feet. You notice with growing revulsion that their throats have been cut and their blood is pouring down the branches and trunk of the tree, the crimson stark against the pale wood.

You grab Kassa by the shoulder and turn her around to face you but recoil in horror. Her skin is a lifeless, ashen grey and empty, enshadowed sockets look back at you instead of eyes. Around her mouth and all down the front of her body is caked in gore.

You try to cry out, but merely choke as your mouth and lungs fill with sickly warm blood.

You awake with a start in the pre-dawn dark. You're clammy and trembling.

Next to you Kassa groans, tossing and turning in her sleep. Her furrowed brow damp with sweat.

1. Wake her.

2. Let her sleep, check to make sure Menelaou is still here.

It's less the implication and damnation of sin, and more a question of our character's personality, that makes me hesitant to agree.

We were raised and trained in religious practises, which no doubt preach some level of morals and ethics. We tried (and thanks to our murderous austim, failed) to prevent Kassa from hurting someone. Tried to threaten the stablehand rather than eliminate him with force. Saved his life at risk to ourselves. And let an easy mark pass us by when we really needed the money.

It's just that, to me, MC is a rather pacifist individual. Not someone to resort to murder in unless in the most dire of circumstances. Let alone willingly sign up to a Merc band, where we will most likely be expected to do harm to others. Unless we function entirely as a support/secretary staff to the Merc band, which is definitely an option, we will be plauged with the weight of taking another's life.
>>
>>3073432
I understand that, but at the same time, based on the tales the recruiter told us(that can be lies too) the band is usually hired to protect the people against threats, sonething we can do. And I feel the MC would not sit by while Kassa is fighting and be unable to help her, she saved her life and abandoned his former life to try and save her, if she is in a dangerous situation he would probably want to be in the thick of it with her, even if he does the clerical work in the downtime

Gently you lie next to Kassa and hold her, murmuring gently that its just a dream and everything will be alright. After a few minutes, her eyes flicker open and swivel wildly around before coming to a focus on you.

“It's OK.” you whisper softly.

“It was just a dream, I had one too.”

“Your eyes, that tree and all those people I.. I..” she stutters, at a loss. You don't think you've ever seen her quite so vulnerable before.

“Thank you for being there. I don't know what I'd do if didn't have you.”

She touches her forehead to yours and puts her hand on your cheek then without warning kisses you softly on the lips. For a moment the nightmares, the panicked running from home and starving in the woods are forgotten. You're standing in the orchard at home just you and her surrounded by sunlight and spring blossoms.

Then she pulls away, suddenly embarrassed. She turns from you and pulls on her shoes and picks up her sword from the side of the bed.

“We should find Menelaou and let him know we've decided.” She says, her voice a little flustered and clearly wanting to move the subject away from what just happened.

(****Exposure to the menhir in the thicket has stirred something dormant in both you and Kassa. You don't know how your parents or what they did to you are tied up in this or how the two of you are connected, but you sense the connection. There's some kind of presence that's always with you now, like a whisper on the edge of hearing or a tiny movement in the corner of your eye. You are both “Marked” by this force, whatever it may be. From possible nasties surprises is this. Second we went to sleep dude run to the village to sell us out and get reward or he heard about our expensive stuff and wants to steal it from us
>>
You peer through a small window in the rafters, the sun is starting to rise and a few of the inn's patrons are up and readying their horses. Another is washing himself in a basin by the door. You don't see anything amiss, if there is some hostile force outside lurking in ambush they are hiding exceptionally well.

The two of you cautiously make your way down from the loft to locate Menelaou. The main hall of the inn is all quiet, with the innkeeper clearing some tables and lighting the fire whilst another patron eats a cold breakfast.

You find Menelaou by the stables tending to his horse.

“Morning, good morning my friends, I trust you slept well? Have you come to a decision.”

The events of the past few days have made you somewhat cynical about this man's overly friendly behaviour, but there is no other path open to you.

“We have, we will sign up with you. But you should know, I'm no soldier. I have little knowledge of combat.”

“Oh don't worry about that my friend. We'll fix it soon enough so long as you're willing to sweat a little. Besides, the captain will be more interested in your mind than your body.” He taps his temple with his forefinger as if to emphasize his point.

“Come, the village we've set up in is two days ride from here. The road awaits.”

Just want to do a knowledge check about magic. What myths and stories do we know involving magic? That might help us figure out what the stones did to us.

>You've heard talk of gods, magic and monsters but have never seen such things yourself. Nor have you heard anyone reputable claim to have witnessed anything overtly supernatural. But the people have many a superstition and there are many old myths and legends.

The myths and stories you've heard aren't really useful for determining if magic is a real force in the world. Its impossible for you to seperate (at this moment) whats myth, exaggeration, reality etc. That being said, you had a very strange memory resurface when you touched the menhir. It was unnaturally cold and you can't think of a good explanation for the bones laid around it.

What you know about the stones is extremely vague. They are very old, no one knows who erected them or why, the Sun King's temple offers rewards for reporting when one is discovered and will destroy them and consecrate the ground they were on. There are rumours associating them with lunacy, nightmares and witchcraft.

You are wearing simple peasant clothes that are unremarkable in all respects.

Kassa is wearing the same, but with a studded leather jerkin on top.

They are as clean as one might expect when you have spent a night sleeping on the ground in the woods.

>>
>>3073652
I agree. Let's move on to travelling.
>>
You spend a few minutes making your horse ready and you are away, making good speed westward down the highway.

The journey is thankfully uneventful. Fine weather and roads empty of all but the occasional trader or shepherd. You spend another night under the stars but with the benefit of a campfire and spare furs that Menelaou shares with you. Although physically you are comfortable, the nightmares return with the same procession of macabre horrors as your night at the inn.

You discreetly discuss your dreams with Kassa. As you had suspected from , her dreams were almost identical to your own. She has no insight or understanding of them. Only revulsion and fear. Kassa seems deeply disturbed by the nightmares, that this isn't something she can confront head-on and fight with fist or blade.

On the afternoon of the second day you draw close to the coast. You can smell salt on the breeze and hear the cry of gulls. You pass two families on the road heading in the opposite direction. You note their wretchedness, they seem haggard and malnourished, no horses or supplies for the road seemingly equipped with only the clothes on their backs. All the same they hurry past and make no attempt to speak with you.

You reach the fishing village where the Late-Comers had establish themselves. A recently erected and makeshift palisade surrounds the village. Your first clue that all is not quite as you expected are the sentries that greet Menelaou as you pass. Filthy, vicious looking men clad in animal hides roughly sewn together, one with his ears docked for a thief. An archer on a crude watchtower by the gate, well equipped, but with a necklace of what appear to be human ears.

The main thoroughfare of the village is little more than a muddy track running between the buildings, a pair of bony dogs slinks away as you make your way through.
A bonfire has been built about two hundred paces from the main entrance and you notice a group of men drinking and howling about it in some raucous celebration. Two riders burst out from between two houses and race down the street, half-naked savages reeling in the saddle, their bodies covered in tattoos and polished war clubs and stone knives hanging in slings about them. Their bridles fashioned with what looks disturbingly like human skin and human hair, decorated with human teeth.

You dismount a dozen paces from the fire and Menelaou ties the horse in an open aired stable that appears to have once been a dwelling, half pulled down to make room for the beasts.

Menelaou ushers you towards a large building that you think must have once been the village hall.

“You'll find the captain within, you can't miss him. Don't mind the troops, just a little restless is all.”

What do you do?

1. Enter and speak to this captain. You don't like what you've seen thus far but it's no use turning back now.
2. Ask Menelaou to explain the state of his comrades.

She notices you glancing back up the road at the gate.

"I don't think trying to run off now would be a good idea unless you want an arrow in the back. Those men at the gate weren't farmers riled up by wine and an righteous mob, they were stone killers."

She thumps her fist lightly into your shoulder and flashes a smile.

Within is anarchy.

People of every colour and shape are packed in the large central room, barbarous wild-looking and equipped with weapons and armor of every possible description. In one corner a group of men dressed in well maintained Imperial-issue armor, some cleaning and maintaining their crossbows, others playing dice and drinking from metal thimble-sized cups.

In another a group of tattooed savages like the riders outside, roaring with laughter and passing a pipe amongst themselves that smells foul even amongst the reek of smoke, alcohol and unwashed bodies. To the rear three Raiders, fair and pale like Kassa, a man and woman of middle age, their bare arms a patchwork of precise, geometric scars and with them a boy of perhaps sixteen slightly darker in complexion, his arms un-scarred but with three across his face, their scaled armor glints even in the murk.

In the centre of the room a space has been cleared and two cockerels are tearing into one another, with half drunk warriors of every stripe laughing and making wagers.

Raised above it all on a dais at the rear is a clean shaven, well-groomed man in what looks like modified Imperial officers armor sitting on an exquisitely carved short wooden chair. He carries himself like some debauched monarch lording over the proceedings. At his side is a woman, lithe in a way that seems unnatural. Her armor too is Imperial-issue but altered to fit her frame and decorated with brightly coloured feathers and gold bands, matched by an elaborate head-dress of orange, blue, green and white plumage concealing her ears and hair. At her hip hang three shrunken heads. She regards you with her head cocked to one side like a bird.

What do you do?

The two of you make your way through the crowded hall towards the back, pushing aside the denizens so you can progress. You make a point of politely excusing yourself and apologising every time you bump into someone, but only get grunts in return.

You eventually reach the back of the hall and are about to introduce yourself when the well-groomed man beats you to it.

“Ah at last the priest and the runaway Raider girl. Good evening, good evening to you.”

He makes a sweeping gesture at a bench and table awkwardly positioned a few steps beneath his chair.

“Please sit. Won't you have something to eat and drink?”

The man's accent is cultured and precise, speaking as a well-educated noble might in contrast to the men around him. Somewhat overcome by your surroundings, you nod in response to his offer, though the table is empty.

He smiles, before screaming in a harsh barking voice “MEAT, SOME MEAT AND DRINK FOR OUR GUESTS. AT ONCE”

A barrel shaped woman with skin like leather, greasy hair and a patch over one eye barges her way through the throng and unceremoniously dumps a metal plate piled high with pieces of charred meat as well as two cups filled with some strong smelling drink. Kassa grabs a leg of something and takes a large bite, chewing appreciatively.

“I am given to understand that you've agreed to join up with our august company. Most fortuitous as, I'm sure you can see my flock is in dire need of priest's ministrations.”

He continues.

“Oh and of course the minor matter of having lost our treasurer at sea. Need an educated man to keep track of who is owed what, how many days worth of food we have and so on and so forth. To say nothing of drawing up agreements with our....clients when the need arises.”

He leans forward, flashing a set of perfect teeth.

“I am Captain Titus Florian Andromedae II or 'Sir' if you prefer. I am your new commander. Truly a pleasure to have you with us.”

What do you do?

1. Explain that you haven't actually 'signed up' to anything yet and would like to understand more about what is expected of you before committing to anything.

Kassa gives you a sharp kick in the shin under the table whilst continuing to stuff her face with meat.

"This stuff is really something, give it a try."

She fixes you with a sharp glare as she hands you the cup and rolls her eye as if to encompass the room.

>autism is a curse
Oh, so that's how mental illnesses worked all along.
>>

You politely explain to Captain Titus that he seems to be misinformed and that you haven't actually agreed to anything yet. That you would need a detailed understanding of what precisely would be expected of you, your length of service, wages and so on. He listens quietly, nodding expansively and cupping his chin thoughtfully whilst you speak and waits for you to finish.

As you are doing so Kassa rubs the bridge of her nose between thumb and forefinger and proceeds to gulp down the strong alcohol.

“My dear boy...” He gets up from his seat and steps onto the table in front of you, crouching on his haunches. He cups your chin between fingers and thumb and tilts your head up so you are looking directly at him.

“I seem to have not made myself clear. This is not a request and I don't want your opinion.”

He twists your head to the right, so that you are looking at the tattooed savages.

“See those men over there. Cannibals from the new continent in the west. They need to kill and eat someone from a neighbouring tribe before they are even considered men. Do you think they signed a contract? Informed consent him?”

He twists your head another way so that you are looking at the Raiders.

“How about them, Kvar from the northern steppe. 'Raiders' to the uninformed. Heathen horde running roughshod over civilized lands, holy murder, scourge the 'grazer people' unto death and all that. Think that they obey me on account of a careful explanation of their wages and length of service?”

The clamour in the room seems to have died down, all eyes are on you. The captain seems to be waiting for a response.

What do you do?

1. Continue to politely try and argue your case.
2. Explain that upon careful consideration you don't think the mercenary life is for you and you'd like to leave.
3. Apologise profusely for your insubordination, the fumes in the room must have gotten to your head. You're overjoyed to be part of his command and are eager to start your duties.
4. Write in.
>>
>>3074121
4. A meek "No, sir." probably suffices. Add on an "I understand, Sir" if he doesn't seem convinced.
Poor, naive autism priest.
>>
>>3074121
" Well, if I didn't have a choice in the first place I guess that is clear now, still, do we get something out of this? Aside from our lives of course...."
>>
>>3074121
>1. Continue to politely try and argue your case.
A good treausurer does not simply follow orders, he must be trusted and be willingly to stand up for he believes. If he forces us into the job there will be no trust between us. That will just cause friction between us, his men and himself down the track. Its better to clearly define ourselves right now.
>>
>>3074137
We need to run away first chance we get
>>
>>3074121
>4
Apologize and say that while you're overjoyed to have come across such a great leader, you just needed to know what was guaranteed for you besides your lives. You know he's a wise and magnanimous leader, which means that he should know about supply of demand. Literate men and able treasurers are in short supply, and the demand is high. That means your value is higher than if you were just a warrior, which is in high supply here. It's only natural that we find an agreement which works for both of us and allows us to get along.
>>
>>3074139
I support this. Tell him that the purpose of a treasurer is not to just keep count of gold, but to make and maintain contracts. If he wants you to be a treasurer than this is the perfect way to start.
>>
>>3074121
"I understand....I'll need weapons."
>>
>>3074145
>>3074139
He'll negotiate Kassa's life; you are indispensable, she is not.
>>
>>3074148
This too, we'll need something to fight
>>
>>3074154
we can probably negotiate with him to leave her out of harms way too, he has plenty of warriors as it is, she may not like it but she was the one that argued for us to hear them out and trust that dude so we can use that as an argument for her letting this decision on us
>>
>>3074154
>implying that he probably wouldn't do that anyway
>>
>>3074154
But we come in a set, she would have to server as a fighter anyway, the only other option would be as a camp follower. Verbal threats are also quite common, its just a part of negoitations. Its only when it breaks down will he ever act on it. Unless you think NTR will happen.

Right now we gotta show some balls. If we act like a pushover, our live will be a living hell in a band or mercenaries like this.
>>
>>3074166
>If we act like a pushover, our live will be a living hell in a band or mercenaries like this.

This what I've been trying to say. If we can negotiate out a contract then we can say we'll be good as a treasurer.
>>
>>3074172
>>3074139
ok, to add into this

"well....I wouldn't be a good treasurer if I didn't try to secure a contract with you for us would I?
>>
>>3074145
Laying the asskissing on a bit thick, there. We are already on thin ice, and if we make such an obvious backpedal in a vain attempt to appease him, he'll probably get properly angry at us. He doesn't need nor want a brown-noser in this situation, he already commands proper respect not empty praise.

>>3074158
That'd just make Kassa pissed at us. She has something she can do, and I doubt she'll want to feel like dead weight. Let her take care of herself, while we each watch each other's back.

I'll probably go with the general sentiment from >>3074139 , then. Gotta keep a sharp wit and strong conviction to make and maintain contracts. Need to at least try to show we can do the treasurer job well.
>>
>>3074176
My reasoning being, we admit we are in a severe disadvantage, because we are and we are not stupid, but we still tryed to get something out of it from the small leverage that we have, he can either apreciate it of become furious and pummel us to the ground

>>3074185
my reasoning for trying to get her to stay back was that we could stay back too, because if she is going to the front lines we are going with her, we are not leaving her alone in a battle surrounded by these guys, we didn't save her back in the village to let her die in a ditch somewhere

As politely as you can, you explain to him that your skills are in high demand and that it is only fitting that you negotiate a contract for your services as that will form part of your duties. You're sure that you can come to some beneficial agreement for all concerned.

"I see that you are not accustomed the military lifestyle. Allow me to educate you."

Still with his hand cupping your jaw between thumb and fingers he hoists you to your feet. His grip on your jaw is like a vice. You realise that this man is very, very strong.

"When your commanding officer gives you an order, you obey. You do not barter or negotiate, you do not question or try and come to a better arrangement."

He pauses, the whole room has gone quiet as a prayer room.

"If I tell you to cut your own throat, you obey. If I tell you to throw your newborn child to a pack of starving wolves, you obey. You obey instantly and without question."

"I have a very simple question for you now, answer truthfully. As if your very life depended on it."

"Which hand do you write with? Right or left?"

What do you say?

1. Tell him truthfully which hand.
2. Continue trying to negotiate with this man.
3. Say nothing.
4. Write in.

Darn, guess we should've stayed meek. Hopefully he doesn't actually disfigures/maims us, and just lets us off with a no-nonsense warning.

“I write with my right hand Sir.” You croak.

The captain smiles warmly

“Good. That wasn't so hard now was it? As for myself, I happen to be one of those lucky few who can write just as well with both hands.”

He releases his grip on your jaw.

“Now be a good lad and place your hand flat on the table, just here. Spread your fingers out nice and wide.”

You do as he says.

“I have decided to be generous.” He declares to the room.

In a motion so fast you can barely see it, Titus reaches down and draws Kassa's dagger from her belt. Before she has time to react he has brought the dagger down in a flashing arc, severing your left little and ring-fingers at the joint.

You stare dumbly at your maimed hand, not yet registering the injury.

Then the pain hits, you scream and black out....

well, not as bad as it could be, we can still fight.

seriously guys, I know you like the scholar build but we need to at least defend ourselves in this kind of environment.
>>
>>3074310
>Defend ourselves
Not a viable option. I imagine any man in the room could make short work of us. We’re in it now.
>>
>>3074306
Ahh, Sun that sucks. Accursed autism leading to physical maiming.
Hope Kassa doesn't do anything too rash, she's probably street smart enough to know not to go after the guy that just took her own blade from her. Maybe we can stitch the fingers back on, or later get some witch-voodoo shit to grow new ones.
Thanks for running OP. See you later.

>>3074310
Trying to stand up and defend ourselves is what led to this. I agree we gotta get some muscle on us, but we also gotta realize when its best to shut up do as the big scary man says. Cause even if we do try to put some time into leveling strength, we have little to no combat experience compared to literally everyone else in the room. I bet even the serving lady could beat the shit out of us even if we had an extra 30 pounds of muscle.
>>
I wonder what happens if we keep this pace up.
We critfail 1 social interaction roll a session, and someone ends up maimed or dead.

How many people are going to be dead from our words alone? Will we have killed more people from autism than by the blade? How much of our body are we going to lose by the end of this?
>>
>>3074306
That was fucking brutal.
Honesty I personally think we should have received a worse punishment in regards to that roll. Thank you for being wholly generous. I am enjoying the story, you're making it a quest with real consequences.
>>
>>3074382
The roll wasn't the problem though, it was a couple of possibly genuine autists deciding that we should have kept going.
>>
>>3074338
As much as I hate permanent damage to our characters, I'm happy this happened in the end since it will let the dumbshit players know this isn't a setting that gives a shit about their ideals or attempted to talk everything down in frivolous vexations.

>>3074388

and lost potentially both pinky's.
There is a reason behind cutting the pinky off just so you people know. It doesn't let you ever hold a sword as good as a man/woman that has both..
Not that we were much of a fighter but best be assured we will be gaining some fighting skills.and this thankfully was in our less dominant hand.
>>
>>3074402
Good thing we don't have to use a Katana, you need the lower to fingers for that.

T. Took kendo lessons.
>>
>>3074428
That's what i was getting at. Is that not true for most swords? I may have applied that were it did not apply then if that is not the case.
Considering he did take our three lower
>>
This quest has been... disappointing. When we roll poorly, we get bad results, and that's understandable. But when we roll well, we still seem to get bad results, or the roll covers only a fraction of what it ought to and another check comes through to make sure something bad happens.

I get the impression the QM wants to tell his own story of suffering and that our input is just a pretense.
>>
>>3074456
Wait I thought we just lost the upper half of the pinky finger. Seems we lost two upper portions of our finger on the left hand?
>>
>>3074520
Bit early to be making claims like that.

>>3074456
Dunno, only ever took kendo, I briefly held a two European 2 hander once at a convention where the was a demonstration but it lacked the finer details so I'm not sure.
>>
>>3074545
"European two handed sword", ignore the extra two I somehow slipped in there.
>>
So why exactly did we decide to try and act like a tough guy in front of a bunch of actual tough guys when we'd probably lose a fight to a broomstick?
Hopefully we can learn some magic by selling our soul or something and go full revenge mode on anyone who ever slighted us sometime down the line if we don't end up dead.
I imagine our faith is gonna falter fairly quickly.
God damn it.
>>
>>3074623
It seemed less like we were acting like a tough guy and more we were just a naive person who's used to civilized society and who doesn't understand that things aren't going to work the same against a horde of mercenaries. Basically, we were too ignorant to understand the consequences of our actions. (in-character)
>>
>>3074633

But if we are running with these dudes we will inevitably have to fight for our lives or to prevent something bad happens to us or help Kassa defend her life, we will be backed in a corner sooner or later and we should at least know how to handle a blade

Bleh, swords.
I'd be more down for a spear or polearm, personally. If we're sticking to 1 handed, mace or warhammer.
We should also be able to pull back a bowstring with our left hand still.

Did our pinkie and ring fingers get cut off at the joint at the knuckle, the fore-knuckles, or the outer most joints?
On first read, I thought we lost the entire two fingers, but now I'm thinking we just lost the tips. Not as bad as I was thinking, at least.
>>
>>3075012
I’ll support going bow and arrow. If magic magic is confirmed when work that into it. Plus we’ll get in way better shape as an archer.
>>
>>3075042
We can pick a crossbow or something for ranged, we really need to be able to do melee to save our skins
>>
>>3075046
If we are wanting to get stronger, the bow is the way to go. Lots of body strength and muscles needed to pull back bow strings.
>>
>>3075054
I know, but its a lot of training to be good with one, while any peasant can hold a crossbow efficiently with little training, I think we should focus in developing sone melee skils first, even if our body doesn't develops as fast as with the bow, since we can have the ranged covered more easely. If we dedicate our training to bow we won't have time to be at least decent with melee weapons. That's just what I think.
>>
>>3075063
Fair, but it brings up the point that; no matter which we choose, if we choose to train one weapon it will come at the expense of another. If we train melee, we won't perform as well at ranged, and vice versa.

I agree, we should probably get to the point where we can defend ourselves up close, but for the time being that's what the waves of mercenary meat shields are for. For our first few fights, it'll probably be best if we hang back and pink people with arrows while Kassa defends us from flankers.
Plus, that rounds out our little party between ranged and melee fighters.

Once we get a bit more strength in our upper body from pulling bowstrings, and learn a bit more military discipline and tactics, we can start working on a spear, axe, or short sword. I also want us to harden up a bit to fighting before we decide to go in at melee, I don't want us to freeze up in battle the first time we cut someone and see blood fly everywhere.

I wonder how Kassa will react to us losing our fingers.

>>3074907
Oh man. You have no idea.
>>
You spend days slipping in and out of consciousness. Faces swim in and out of your view but you can't tell where one ends and another begins. When the waking world fades the nightmares begin, twisted with fever each seems worse than the last. The pale tree, three moons, Kassa and macabre spectacles of mass death and corpses are omnipresent.

After what seems like an eternity a sudden jolt of movement shakes you awake. Your right hand instinctively moves to your left. For a moment you'd hoped the loss of your fingers had just been a dream, but the stitched up stumps where they used to be are all too real.

You look around. You're in the back of a covered wagon on top of sacks of flour and beans, a blanket laid on top of you. Another bump in the road rattles your bones. You can dozens of voices singing a crude marching song close-by.

The curtain at the back of the wagon is pulled to the side by a strange looking woman bedecked in colourful feathers. You remember her from the village hall where you were maimed.

“Awake? Good.” You cant place her accent, although her pronunciation is perfect.

She moves to your side with erratic, jittering movements and seizes your injured hand. She holds it up to her nose and smells the wound.

“Rot is gone. You'll live. Good. Would've wasted medicine.” She turns to get out of the wagon.

“Going to tell captain you're awake. He will want to see you. Wait here.”

What do you do?

The odd woman departs, leaving you alone.

You shimmy to the end of the wagon and pull the curtain aside. The sunlight is blinding at first but you quickly adjust. Your wagon is part of a column of other carts and horses, further behind is a column of armed and armored men marching along with you, the occasional rider passes back and forth.

You don't recognize your immediate surroundings but you are travelling down a wide road, fields lying fallow, filled with wildflowers to either side.

One of the riders shouts a greeting and raises his hand. “Ho priest”.

The man looks to be a head shorter than you, but broader. He's unshaven and wears a helmet that was clearly made for someone with a bigger head as it tips lopsided. His horse is laden with a large pack with various items poking out or hanging from loops.

“I'm Smee. The captain sent me to look after you, show you the ropes now that you're up and about.”
He grins, displaying several missing teeth.

“The big man will send for you when we set up camp for the night, said to take whats left of the day before then.”

Smee strikes you a simple sort of man and doesn't appear malicious although like almost everyone around here he has an irregular assortment of weapons attached to his belt and horse.

“I'd heard she'd been coming to see you every night whilst you were feverish. Guess you were too laid out to notice. Heh. I wouldn't worry about her seems tough enough.”

Really sorry for the really slow pace guys, been struggling to find the time today.

I'm going to be working long shifts for the next three days. I might be able ot get one or two updates in (no promises) but I aim to have the next proper session on sunday. I'll create a new thread if this one has dropped off.
>>
>>3075716
I wouldn’t worry about intermediate updates too much, it’s fine just running intermittent concentrated sessions.

Intresting quest so far, OP for future reference you should get your head around the basic tools of /qst/ especially spoiler text as it can help filter out tertiary information such as relationship upgrades or other changes.

As far the game goes I'm liking the brutality of it, losing fingers is a good way to get anons thinking about character development but use such punishments sparingly and with great care a bridge too far is only one punishment away or uninforming players of potential consequences can mark a quest poorly.

As a player dear lord guys adapt or suffer the consequences, we are among the worst of the worse now and unless we get some bullshit way of circumventing our crippled autistic nerd self we are going to be pushed around and abused so suck up to our boss and can the attitude or I fear the worst for us and Kassa.
>>
>>3076720
I'm planning on doing what we are told until an opportunity arises to escape, that's the plan for now at least, things can change if we adapt and work well here, but most of all, learn how to fight, either here or if we escape, the world outside the village is a world of violence and we need to be able to withstand and deliver that.
>>
>>3076734
Not a good idea, since they can chase us down, best wait for another shipping accident then use that to disappear without them thinking to look for us too hard.

Also use this to chance to power level a bit, get in shape so we can actually run, etc.
>>
To be honest the QM could of let us know via the story how brutal this would be. Punishing players for bad choices is fine but it seemed like this came out of nowhere, leaving me at least quite unsatisfied.
>>
We were warned by >>3074121 on top of the 33 roll, it was our fault for persisting after either of those; this is why you CAREFULLY read instead of glossing over to the choices, the context clues were all there by emphasizing "they didn't have a choice and neither do you, twig boy."
>>
>>3076823
It really didn't if you read the room, people kept saying what you were doing wasn't going to go down well, Qm reinforced it and here we are.
>>
>>3076801
Well yes, like I said, an opportunity to escape, simply running out in the night is not an opportunity. Hiding with Kassa among casualties in a battle when someone thinks we are dead is an opportunity. I intend to train and adapt to this situation, but at the current mindset of the main character, I think he would sieze an opportunity to escape if it presented itself with a reasonable chance of success
>>
>>3076838
For got to quote >>3076823 while looking for the QM post but it could be a general statement as well.
>>
>>3076841
Alright, it sounded yeah that's ideal, it sounded like an escape attempt at the earliest convenience ie. when no ones looking.

>>3076823
Even Kassa was doing her best to literally kick some sense into us stopping.

>>3076838
Well in his defense, alot qms don't go through the trouble or put in the extra detail or effort to make reading the room a worthwhile effort..... So most players just breeze through select an option and then tab out to something else in their browser.
>>
Damn QM. If this is your first quest, im impressed. You have a huge turnout. 80 posters is probably among the highest ive seen here. Admittidly, im new to this board, but still

>>
>>3077827
>A one post guy has the save validity as someone who sticks with the thread and the quest till its end.

Yeah no.

There is not much you can do to definitely prove that unless you got mod powers or special programs.
>>
>>3077840
my point
>>
>>3077977
in terms of proof, not suspicion.

Which basically lets them get away with it most of the time.
>>
If you guys are smart you'll use your position as the ledger/contract manager to subtly shift gold towards people "alligned with your interests". And when the majority realize the one that's securing the money it's you and not the retard that goes around cutting the person that's gonna handle his money you can take your prize (both hands? hands and feet? whatever you desire) as it is due.

What a great payday that'll be when you see mongo brute bleeding on the ground.
>>
>>3078225
If our character makes a gradual shift towards a fitting mindset then sure, otherwise even taking the initial step in such a plan would be jarring.
>>
>>3078261
Getting 2 fingers chopped off is a pretty good motivator to not find the guy getting killed "jarring".
>>
>>3078268
It's one thing for a pacifist to be apathetic to the death of someone who slighted him, it's another for him to suddenly conspire to organize a mutiny. Perhaps if our morals and naivety are loosened over time during our stay, then it can be considered.
>>

>>
>>3078225
I do think it would be cool to play the long game and eventually geld, blind, and cripple this fucker. Get ourselves up to acceptable in combat type stuff, but our characters strength is his knowledge, intellect, and the fact that he is a priest which makes people inclined to trust us. After losing our fingers for trying to negotiate, we should lay low, be a good little recruit merc/treasurer, and over time get ourselves in a position to get revenge.
>>
>>3078561
Agreed, hes not unnecessarily brutal because hes a "bad person" just because he likes to be, he is because its necessary to maintain his position and keep people like rapists, cannibals, and possible pretenders in line.
>>
>>3078561
We Guts now.
>>
>>3078561
this though less emphasis on blind hatred and more making ourselves relatively comfortable and valuable to present company and get with the program.

If we do go full bitter on this I want lots of anger & bitterness.
>>
>>3079053
But anon, we haven't even been raped yet.
>>3079074
This would be more appropriate for now, if anything else happens down the road, THEN we can get all spiteful and the like. Until then, we're just a priest boy with, at most, one hostile bone.
>>
>>3079188
give it time if we continue bucking the boat its going to be either us or Kassa

more likely Kassa
>>
>>3078319
Oh yeah I'm sure that just because you haven't killed anyone in your life you'd find jarring killing your captor after he chopped off your fingers. You are making literally 0 sense.

The best I'd take is being paralyzed by fear out of our partner having to pay if we're caught red handed but even so I'd see the need to kill a moody bitch even higher than the fear because he's gonna end up murdering/raping her in a fit for sure.

This guy was dumb enough to generate enmity towards the dude in charge of his treasury so that mercurial mood is a threat to the MC and her raiderwamin.

Also he is not killing the guy, but conspiring to have professionals dispatch of him, which sounds even less dangerous than trying to get buff to cut his head off.
>>
>>3079497
I think we should both get stronger and have professionals off him.

Doubles our chances.
>>
>>3079497
>Oh yeah I'm sure that just because you haven't killed anyone in your life you'd find jarring killing your captor after he chopped off your fingers. You are making literally 0 sense.

Yes because going from meek and mild to vicious villian after immediately being maimed makes complete sense.

Give it time to at least stew and fester before moving on this we haven't had a single vicious thought prior to this so what your proposing is a complete turnabout in terms of personality.
>>
>>3079497
>Oh yeah I'm sure that just because you haven't killed anyone in your life you'd find jarring killing your captor after he chopped off your fingers. You are making literally 0 sense.
When I say "jarring" I mean it in a meta sense. I don't know how much media you've consumed where a Good character turns into an Evil character within the span of a couple of in-universe days but I can assure you that few, if any, were good.
>The best I'd take is being paralyzed by fear out of our partner having to pay if we're caught red handed
We're not even at this phase because we're as goody-two-shoes as an accessory to murder and horse theft can get.
>This guy was dumb enough to generate enmity towards the dude in charge of his treasury so that mercurial mood is a threat to the MC and *his raiderwamin.
Already addressed by the above and we're not even strong enough to gain their respect after any mutiny we stage.
>Also he is not killing the guy but conspiring to have professionals dispatch of him, which sounds even less dangerous than trying to get buff to cut his head off
You are retarded. There has neither been a sufficient amount nor severity of events to justify any of this in-character. Wait. Until. Then.
>>
>>3079742
I'm with this guy.
The shear amount of bloodlust and foaming-at-the-mouth from this is actually kind of surprising. I get not liking the guy, but the its kinda thrown me off just how much anon wants to systematically destroy this guy, despite it being obvious we walked into a less than scrupulous crowd.

Even if your responses are justified from an outsiders' view, I agree that it makes no fucking sense in character. We are quite literally one of the nicest guys in this world right now. At least as far as people we've met. Saving people actively trying to help get us killed, evade rather than fight, not rob a failure of a man for some gold, making possibly the most honest effort at being civil and nice to the merc boss that he's ever seen.

Naive? Sure, but not misplaced nor unfitting. We were raised as a priest to do a priestly duty; to help others and believe in honest good in people. Know what a lot of priests would call this situation? A trial, a test of faith. The Sun is seeing if we are truly the heretic our parents tried to make, or if we will stay the righteous path.

Not to mention, I think the character interaction with Kassa will be more interesting this way. She's probably more pragmatic and willing to go along with the merc job, but she's also a lot more likely to be upset at what happened and try to act on that anger. She'll be channeling a lot of that hate that anon is feeling. I almost think that she'll be hating for MC, since MC might just not have it in him to hate that much, and she'll feel the need to do it for him. And I'll be interested to see how MC deals with a more vicious and upset Kassa, and see if he can keep her from doing something rash on his behalf.
>>
Also, just another important thing I'd thought I'd mention.

Bare in mind what the boss is doing. He is using fear and abuse to cow someone. As a rather scholarly focused and socially awkward outcast (I really doubt our blunder with Lucia was the first, its likely we bumbled our words with just about everyone), this is the exact strategy to use to keep them under control.
You don't expect someone in our position to suddenly stand up, think about how to systematically turn someone's operation upside down, and follow through with it. You expect them to shrink back at the confrontation, be meek and obedient for fear of the further punishment. Similar to how we were probably bullied and treated back in the village by the other kids.

The point is that its a strategy that works really well against a young person unfamiliar with the world, or just an honestly decent person. It'd only really backfire if the person it was used on was sufficiently world-weary and was already in the mind to overthrow the boss, or just a complete sociopath.
>>
>>3079834
What about someone who was so traumatized by the event, that they are blinded by emotional turmoil and the need to lash out almost in a knee jerk reaction?
>>
>>3079874
Well, given that we didn't suddenly start autistically screeching at our hand after we came to, I can safely say we have not been traumatized by that event. We lost a couple of fingers, not get raped or beaten half-to-death.
>>
>>3079874
Guess it depends on the trauma, and the person. Some I suppose would become a lot more unstable and liable to lash out. Others might do anything they can to avoid it again, and go to great lengths to not encounter a similar situation. Some might just freeze up like a deer.
The way people react to traumatic experiences varies wildly based on the individual, the source of the trauma, and the severity of the trauma.

It also depends on how much they are able to talk and socialize with others, and generally seek council. How much of a help network they have to rely on. And how much time they are able to processes the trauma with or without said help network.
>>
>>3079930
So what, we need a Will check to determine how traumatized we got from this or something?
>>
>>3079939
Probably not, we're mostly having a metagame discussion.
>>
I think the forst reaction the mc would have is try to become stronger ad he slowly realizes he doesn't have a society with guards to protect him no longer since he is a criminal, and he is smart enough to realize that even being naive.

And like I said earlier, try to adapt to the situation and look for a concreate escape opportunity for both us and Kessa that has a small chance of being foiled
>>
>>3076823
I feel the same way honestly. Stabbing our character in the hand or arm instead of cutting off 2 entire fingers would probably have been a fairer punishment.

Here we go

>>3075585
>>3075713

You're sat on the back of a wagon trundling down a high road within the marching column of the Late-Comers mercenary band. Having recently awoken from being incapacitated with fever after you had two fingers from your left hand cut off.
-
It seems to be mid-morning, the destination of your new 'comrades' is unknown.
-
A simple and friendly looking soldier named Smee has come to find you on the Captain's orders. He's been told to 'look after you' and show you the ropes after you've been forcibly conscripted into the company as some sort of clerk, although precisely what your duties are isn't yet clear.

You enquired after your companion Kassa and Smee indicated that she was 'making herself useful' and perhaps sensing you're concern indicated that you shouldnt worry about her. He also informed you that she had visited your bedside every night you were ill, although you remember very little of the past few days. Just blurry half-conscious glimpses, fever dreams and your recent unpleasant nightmares.

Smee has offered to show you around on horseback, but you also have an opportunity to ask him a few questions. He seems friendly enough.

1. Ask where you are and where you're going.
2. Ask about the strange, feather-clad woman who treated you whilst you were ill.
3. Tell him to show you around.
4. Write in.

Welcome back, OP.

>1. Ask where you are and where you're going.

>3. Tell him to show you around.
Be polite, Smee doesn't seem like a bad sort necessarily.

We aren't likely to get much info on the more exotic members of the band from someone like Smee. Maybe basic rumors, but nothing concrete. Let's get our basic understanding of the situation underway.

“We're marching south to Tinholm” Smee answers whilst trying in vain to adjust his helmet.

“Boss got word that the governor is having some big bandit trouble, some organized gang hiding up in the hills that the local militia can't seem to deal with. Put out a big bounty on them. Not much of a job for us, but you take what you can get when there isn't a war on.”

You ask how far we are from Tinholm.

“About two days march I reckon, assuming we don't get any rain muddying up the road.”

>3. Ask him to show you around

You climb into the saddle of the spare horse Smee arrived with and ask him to show you around.

He strokes his chin thoughtfully.

“Should probably get you an outfit first, but I reckon you must be hungry if you haven't had any thing solid cept whatever slop that feather-witch was feeding you whilst you were cooped up in that cart. What say we get some grub?”

1. Go and get something to eat.

“Good lad, an army marches on it's stomach they say. Doubt there'll be anything hot on the move, but Ol' Bes should be able to fix us something to last til we camp”.

Smee leads you further up the column at a brisk canter. It wasn't clear before back in the coastal village, but you'd guess the company must be between 250-300 strong. You are once again struck by the variety of troops, the Late-Comers seem to have picked up fighting men from every corner of the world.

Smee occasionally waves and shouts greetings as you travel and seems to be well liked by many of the other soldiers. A few glance at you as you pass, but none address you.

You approach a larger wagon that clatters with every bump on the road. In the back a large, stocky woman can be seen chopping up joints of meat with a large cleaver. You recognize her as the one who brought you food before in the village hall.

She greets you warmly and ruffles your hair as though you were a child. Smee introduces her as Bes and explains that she handles most of the rations and manages the cooking. After he makes a convincing case about how you need some extra rations to help you recover she gives you some dried meat, bread and cheese which you wolf down in short order. She as well as a small pack containing some less perishable foods.

***You are now well fed and have gained a small pack containing basic rations***

What do you do now?

1. Get some equipment.
