Before you knew it, summer break comes to a close and you find yourself once more in the club room with little changed. Your uniform, for one. The conversations too, though they went from discussions about what was in the weekly or monthly manga to things that arguable be considered fitting for a club that has to do with the occult.

“Aliens definitely exist, I mean, what are the chances that they don’t?” Miku says in an uncomfortable volume. “There’s bound to be in space; it’s too big for there to be nothing!”

If you were to be honest, you’d rather it to go back to manga.

Hinami counters, “If they existed, we’d have seen them before. The fact that we haven’t met any seems... definitive!”

You feel like the roles are reversed.

To that, Miku responds, “They could be hiding from us! We’re kinda like bloodthirsty freaky fleshy things, right? Maybe we’re super barbaric to them and they’d rather stay away.”

Meanwhile, Nemuri is taking a nap, miraculously able to sleep through it all.

“That’s stretching it way too much!” Hinami retorts, “Unless they knew magic and made invisibility cloaks, there’s no way it’s possible!” There are just some things she chooses not to believe in, you suppose. Maybe it’s because no matter how you look at it, aliens existing and humanity not finding them would have terrifying implications.

“What if they had really advanced technology?! They could’ve made their cloaking fields with science!”

You clap your hands together. “Okay, let’s get back to topic before we lose another day,” you say, barging into their heated debate. “We need to decide on what we’re doing for the Cultural Festival.” It seems that Hanako would forgive not releasing another journal until then if the club were to produce something for the event.

Folding her arms, Miku says to you, “I don’t know what’s there to talk about. We can just put out an anthology or something.”

Hinami quietly points out, “That’s a little lazy...”

It is, kind of.

“Maybe we can put on some kind of display thing.“

“Ehh?” Miku makes a sour face. “That sounds like a lot of work. Like, way too much. I’m not remembering lines for a play!”

“No, like a fortune-telling booth or something,” you explain, “Unless you’re thinking of making goods to sell, which might end up being even more painful to do.”

Hearing this, Hinami says, “Fortune-telling might be a bad idea, since I think you’re cursed.”

“What? Me? No way, why would you say that?”

“The tarot cards, remember?” she reminds you, “Maybe we should stay far away from that as possible.”

You look at Nemuri, who has her face buried in her arms, using them basically as a pillow on the table. She can’t just sleep through this! You poke her, and when she doesn’t budge, you poke her again.

She’s faking it.

You announce, “It’s okay, we can do a 1 person play. Who doesn’t want to be main role, raise your hands. Oh wow, what’s this? Nemuri wants to volunteer? It’s decided!—“

She raises a hand, her face still down. “Objection.”

“Come up with something, then,” you tell her.

Finally lifting her head up, Nemuri says, “We have a month and a half. We can take it easy.” She rubs her eyes

“Hey, you know these things are like 90% preparation right?” you reply, “At least help think of something.”

“Why don’t we do a crafts workshop or something. That way, we don’t have to do anything, but they do,” she answers. Amazing.

Hinami says, “That doesn’t sound too bad.”

“Or!” Miku cuts in, “We can hunt for aliens!”

You say, “You’re still on about that? That’s not even... How is that going to work?”

“Someone saw a UFO around right? Obviously, we’re going to go hunting for it! No preparation needed!”

You’re speechless.

“Uh...” you trail off. You’re not quite sure what to say. You’re not sure how it’ll even work.

Nemuri, after thinking deeply for a hot second, concludes, “I’m for it. It’s even less work, so it’s better than my idea.”

Hinami says nothing, only looking with extreme suspicion.

You, extremely hesitant, finally say, “Okay. I guess we’re doing whatever Miku has planned?” Your sentence ends on a high note, letting it be known how much you question your own vote.

“Great!” she says, cheering, “Now we can take it easy for a month. Ryuuta, are you done reading that yet? Give it over already!”

As she goes over to try and steal the magazine from you, you quickly move away, feeling like the club’s back to doing what it was before. Which was literally nothing.

Another day, another slew of classes that you have to sit through. You can’t say you’re too excited about learning about math, but it isn’t as if you have anything better to do. As the teacher walks into the room you notice a complete stranger following right behind. With the school uniform she has on, you can tell it’s probably...

“Class, you have a new classmate. She’s an exchange student from overseas,” the teacher says, his voice giving away the fact that he’s dead inside from trying to teach trigonometric proofs to a class that refuses to get it.

The girl, in a bubbly voice, says, “Konnichihi! I’m Arisu Marigold, nice to meetcha!” What did she just say?

The rest of the class says their greetings and the teacher starts to say, “There’s an empty seat next to Ryuuta back there. Take that one. Ryuuta, can you share your textbook with her?” To which you nod.

“Okay!” she says, coming over and settling down by the seat adjacent to yours. The first thing you noticed when you saw her was that she was blonde, though it wasn’t too strange as you’ve seen people dye and bleach their hair with complete disregard to school rules.

“Hey,” you start to say, “I’m Ryuuta, but I guess you know that already. Do you know what we’re covering?” The two desks are pushed together as you drop the heavy textbook in between.

“Ahh, sorrymasen,” she answers, “I don’t really get it. It looks a little different from what I know, though.”

She did it again. You’re not quite sure what she’s doing, but it’s bothering you to an intense degree. Is it intentional? Is she just a giant weirdo?

You should...

You need to say something, or it’s going to bug you forever.

She asks, “Ah, can you kudaplease flip the page back? I didn’t get that part.”

“Wha... Sorry, what?” You have no idea how to say it without being incredibly rude, but here you are. “Are you merging words together?”

“...Was I doing that? Haha, sorry!” Arisu says, rubbing the back of her neck. “I grew up speaking a different language, so sorry if I get things mixed up.” Then, she instantly changes the subject, “Ah, so, what does this thing here stand for?” She points to a ridiculously long acronym in the textbook and as your eyes move to look at what she’s talking about, you notice a strand of her hair stick up in a shape that curiously resembles a specific piece of punctuation.

“Uh, yeah, that’s just something about ASA triangles...” you trail off. Her strand of hair wiggles. It’s as if she has an antenna sticking out of her head or something, the way her bed hair is looking.

“I see, I see,” she nods, writing down scribbles.

...

It’s only until lunchtime do you get to get a breather. As you’re walking down the hallway, you can’t help but think there was something off about her. No wait, you’re just being racist or something. You can’t just judge people like that!

Shaking some sense into your head, you notice Hinami looking at something in a bulletin board.

Walking up, you call out to her, “Hey, what are you looking at?”

“I was thinking about making a poster for our festival booth event,” she says, “But maybe it’s not such a good idea.”

“Isn’t it a little too early to start thinking about it?” Taking a glance at what she was looking at, you instantly notice that a handful of other clubs have already, very excitedly, put up their planned events amongst recruitment posters. The occult club’s poster is nicely tucked away, hidden behind a stack of other papers. “Not again,” you grumble, taking it out and pinning it right back on top.

“Wow!” a voice behind you says. It’s Arisu, who somehow has managed to follow you this entire time, not that you were trying to escape or anything. “An occult club? What’s that about?”

You wonder.

This is your chance!

You could get a new member, seeing as how the club is teetering on the edge of destruction, but should you say anything at all? Hinami could probably do a better job, but she isn’t exactly the best for this kind of thing. She isn’t like Miku, who could force down a sale if she really wanted to.

Clearly, you have to be the one who handles this with great finesse.

“It’s terrible. I should know, I’m in it,” you say. No, hold on wait pause that isn’t right, “But it is a lot of fun.” It was as if you tripped before walking down a flight of stairs and landed after a flip. Meanwhile, Hinami watches in stunned silence. You continue, “We do all sorts of things, including investigating mysteries and helping out with school events.” You are stretching that out so hard right now, especially since you can count the number of interesting events on one hand. “Like during summer break, we got to dress up and scare classmates for fun.”

Arisu laughs, “Haha, what a strange world.”

“...” You’re going to assume the language barrier is making it hard to communicate. “Uh, yeah, but usually we just sit around, eat snacks, and talk about stuff.”

“It seems ma—“ she stops herself as if she was going to say another one of those terrible duo-language words again, and she continues, “seems really fun! Can I come check it out?”

“Of course,” you reply, and a pang of hunger causes you to reevaluate. “You two want to grab lunch? I’m starving.”

Arisu shakes her head. “Sorryma—“ she says, cutting herself off again. You really made her self-conscious. “I forgot to bring mine and I’m not used to the food here. I’ll just skip it, it’s not a problem! I’ll see you back in class, byeyonara!”

Meanwhile, Hinami stands there, not having said a word the entire time. “Bye...what?”

As you open the door to the club room, you find yourself inexplicable exhausted. No, it’s perfectly explicable; you were too busy coming up with nonsense over nothing.

To your surprise, not only is it already unlocked, but someone’s already inside—Hinami. She’s here earlier than usual.

“This is the club room,” you announce to Arisu.

“Whoa,” she says in awe, “It’s so big!” It’s not. At all.

You say, “I don’t think we did introductions last time. That’s Hinami, Hinami, this is Arisu.”

“Nice to meet you!” Arisu bubbles.

“N-nice to meet you, “Hinami says, opening the fridge, “Do you want anything to drink?”

“Mmm, maybe I shouldn’t. Oh well, whatever happens, happens!” Arisu, practically skipping over, takes a look at the contents inside and glows as it fully dawns on her the power that is the variety of soft drinks available to the occult club. Hinami opened up with a powerful move. She says, “I’ll take this then!” as she grabs the last cola in the fridge. Miku’s not going to be happy, but you’ll worry about that as it comes along. As she gulps down a mouthful, she sighs outward, “This is so good! What is it?”

“It’s uh, cola,” you answer.

You need to win her over.

For a moment, you consider inviting Arisu to ravage Nemuri’s cabinet of snacks. You dismiss it when you remember she skipped lunch because she wasn’t used to the food. The only other major thing left would be...

“Do you like reading?” Hinami asks. That’s so disingenuous and it makes it sound so much better than it actually is. “We have a bookshelf filled with... things.”

A year’s worth of Suion magazines and then some alongside with literature that was so graciously gifted by the previous users of the room. When you say that, you actually mean they forgot to take it with them when they disbanded and left it here for future clubs to pretend they’re more sophisticated than they actually are.

When you see Arisu grab the thickest tome on the history of mythological sea monsters, you silently thank your predecessors. She looks at it in awe, and all you can remember is that Miku used it once as an obscenely large coaster.

She says, “Wow, it’s so big. You have sea monsters here? I wanna see them!” True, it doesn’t outright say it’s about mythos anywhere on the cover, but it should be a given!

Hinami says, “N-no, it’s just a history of fictional creatures. Um, Arisu, where did you come from?”

“Oh, you wouldn’t have heard of it,” she says, putting the book back in the shelf and grabbing one of the magazines instead. “It’s really, really far away, and it’s really tiny.”

Miku’s thoughts from yesterday are really getting to you. That’s just insane. You’re thinking crazy things.

You need to be perfectly logical here.

“Far away... tiny... the principality of Sealand?” you ask.

“The what? Haha, I guess there’s a lot of faraway tiny places.” she replies in confusion, “No, I’m from Enjisi, Itsunirei.” When she sees you frowning in search for any sort of familiarity, she grins as she says, “Told you! No one’s heard of it before. We mostly keep to ourselves.”

“Wow, what’s it like there?” Hinami asks, “It sounds so different than here.”

“It is! Everyone’s really friendly here. There’s a lot less trees, but our trees are much, much tinier! Our buildings go higher too, and we do a lot less walking. There’s also so much water around here,” she says, shivering, “It’s pretty weird.” She takes another drink of the cola, and then she adds, “Your drinks are great too!”

“I think I know someone who you might get along with,” you say, “Do you miss it back home?”

“I do, but there was a lot of fighting, so I couldn’t stay there. So I came here!” she says as she flips open the magazine, “I wish I could go back home, though...” As she trails off, she starts going through the pages quickly. So quickly you doubt she’s actually reading instead of looking at the pictures.

Bringing Hinami to the side, you whisper, “Are you a magnet for weird things? She’s definitely an alien, right?”

“W-what?!” she says, ouraged. “Ryuuta, that’s incredibly ignorant of you.”

“She says things like, ‘this world is weird’, how am I supposed to take it?! And I’m pretty sure no country exists that’s called... whatever that is.”

“This isn’t her first language!” she says, actually kind of pissed off at you. “Maybe she’s saying things weird or wrong because she’s not fluent?”

You begin to say something but stop when you realize if you were to use your head, she’s right. You’re being immensely rude right now and unlike yourself. “Sorry, forget it.”

Before you can utter another word, Miku and Nemuri enter the club room together. By the looks of it, they’ve definitely been watching for a while now.

The former says, “Hi! Oh, what’s this, do we have a new member?” She introduces herself and Nemuri follows after. Arisu does the same, matching the energy of the former, causing Nemuri to secretly give you a look that expresses the agony of dealing with two energetic people in the room.

You say, “She’s just checking the club out, but we’re glad to have her if she wants to join, right?”

“Right!” Miku says. “And it looks like you’ve gotten settled in already—Hey! That’s the last cola!”

Arisu, checking the bottle for a second, looks back up sheepishly. “Gomenasorry...” You pretend you didn’t hear that.

“Ahah, I guess it’s fine—eh, what did you say?”

“Sorry! I said sorry.”

You try your best to not be an awful person.

“What are you reading?” Miku asks as she goes over to Arisu.

Meanwhile, you can’t get over the strand of hair that sticks right out of her, the one that sways to and fro without a wind. You have no idea what form of magic it is, but you must find out! Upon consideration, you find that it could be possible that it’s used as an actual antenna, but for brain waves! Surely, you can telepathically communicate with her.

So you think.

Very loudly.

Hey! I know you can hear me!

Nothing. Her expression doesn’t change and her weird hair doesn’t budge in reaction.

Obviously you need to do it louder.

HELLO!

You mentally scream at her and receive nothing in return. That’s it, you have to bust out the big guns.

I LOVE YOU, PLEASE GO OUT WITH ME!

“Ah!” Arisu says, recoiling backwards. Yes, you got it! She could hear you after—

“Oh, you got up to the part where he dies!” Miku says, “That shocked me too, I never saw it coming! And it’s so forced! Gah, I really should send the author an angry message.”

Never mind.

Hinami looks at you. “Are you okay? You look like you’re having stomach pains.”

“I-I’m fine,” you tell her. You should really get back on track. “Alright everyone, we should talk about what we’re going to do for the cultural festival again.”

Her attention now yours, Arisu asks, “What’s that?”

“It’s a big event where clubs or classes show off things and maybe even sell things for a profit,” you explain, “We’re participating this year, and apparently...” You motion to Miku.

“Oh!” Miku says as if she suddenly remembered, “Right, we’re hunting aliens!”

“...Huh?” Arisu pauses. Is that surprise on her face? She says, “Hunting... aliens?”

“Everyone’s saying there was a UFO flying around here a while ago. It’s no different than those scavenger hunts, right?”

“That’s... um...”

Nemuri says, “Not that I’m bothered, but can you not make us look like psychos? Let’s not scare the new member out instantly.”

>Phrase it more like an alien “search” than an alien “hunt”. Maybe that’ll make our new friend more comfortable.
>>
>>3043404
This is a good point. We should emphasize that we're interested in the idea that there might be aliens and what we're excited about is meeting them.

Sure, this I guess

“It’s more like an alien search, more than a hunt,” you explain. “You know, we’d be excited to meet them if there were any.”

“Oh,” Arisu says after a long, long minute. Then she laughs, “Haha, that’s kinda weird. Aliens don’t exist, right? Are you sure they didn’t see a fat bird and thought it looked like a spaceship?”

Miku replies, “We’ll never know until we find out!”

“I guess that’s true,” she resigns, “It’s still kind of weird.”

You try to reassure her. “We still have a month and a half, which is plenty of time. If anyone comes up with a better idea, we can switch over.”

Hinami steps in, clearly having heard enough of this alien business. “Besides that, we also do other things too, like making charms.” She takes hers out, which you find to be Protection. It looks like she still kept it after she switched with Miku’s. Arisu looks at it in awe, as if it was beaming with magic prowess.

“Oh,” you say, “I still have mine.” From your wallet, you pull out your Luck charm, hidden safely inside.

“Me too!” Miku says, showing off Hinami’s charm for Wisdom.

Nemuri says, “I didn’t lose mine yet, surprisingly,” and she shows hers, the sigil written on it standing for Fortitude.

To Arisu, Hinami offers, “Do you want to make one? I’ll help out.” There’s a small, confident smile in her face, the one she wears ever so often.

“Can I? Really?” Arisu asks, “They look like they cost a lot of magic.”

Hinami laughs lightly. “There’s plenty of that to go around,” she answers simply.

To your surprise, she managed to steer the direction of the conversation back into something less like a trainwreck.

“It feels kinda weird having a new member this time of the year,” Miku says. “Isn’t it kind of late?”

You’re on the way to home, having said goodbye to the rest of the club.

“It does,” you reply. “I wasn’t expecting an overseas transfer student either. Do you think the club’s going to be any different?”

“Probably,” Miku answers, “She seems like a lot of fun! Heheh, there’s all sorts of things I want to show her too. If she liked that cola we had, then she’s in for a surprise...”

“Please don’t destroy our new member’s stomachs so quickly.”

“Oh! This means less work too! Think about it, there’s another person that can help with stuff like the journals or the cultural festival!”

“You’re terrible,” you joke, “I wonder if she’ll be okay with a club that doesn’t do anything.”

“Hinami’s still here, isn’t she? She still somehow puts up with us, so it’s no problem!”

“You... If you know that, then you should feel a little bad for her,” you tell her.

“I do, and I’m thankful!” she replies, laughing.

You only smile as you continue down the street, the orange glow of the sky dying the landscape in all of it’s colors.

You sneeze. Sniffling, you bring your hand up to your nose. “Ugh, I think I caught something.”

Three days later, a written note would be found inside the room, sitting on the table after somehow slipping in.

Though you wouldn’t be the one to find out what it reads, the words on it would go on to say:

“It’s me, Arisu Marigold!

I have to go back home, but in the short time here, it was fun! You were all so friendly, even though we didn’t really get to know each other all that well.

It might sound impossible, but I hope we can see each other again. Arigathanks for everything, everyone!

By the way, I hope it’s okay that I brought back some of the drinks with me.

Good luck on your festival thing!”

Like the seasons, people come and go, you would figure. Though you’d still wonder if she was really from outer space or not, there’s just some things you’ll never find out, you guess. Just like all those times before. Luckily, you don’t sweat the details.

She was here, even if it was for a moment, and that was all that mattered.

Thanks for playing! By the way, saving interventions until the very, very end will have an effect, but don’t be afraid to use them! It’s not like you’ll die if you use all of them, right?

As always, comments, criticism, and questions are very welcome.

>It’s not like you’ll die if you use all of them, right?
This looks like a warning for me.
Looks like we won't be using Interventions for a while
>>
>>3043599
Seems like a challenge. If there's any real danger then we can just roll well. Saving things for the end is for people who are unlucky.
>>
>>3043591
And just like that, she's gone. Aw..

It's not a warning. Using them will change more than saving them. After all, what's the greatest power if not to push for the one you want to win?
>>
>>3043591
Yeah, I had a feeling she was gonna go back to her home planet in pretty short order. In retrospect I should’ve suggested blowing an Intervention to like put a phone in her purse to track her or some shit to prove she was an ayylmao. Hindsight’s always 20/20. As always, thanks for running! I had a good time.
>>
>>3043602
>We can just roll well
Can’t remember the last time we actually did that but I like your confidence
>>3043605
Ah, I begin to comprehend. In that case, I’m glad we blew that Intervention earlier when we shot ink all over Aya.
>>
>>3043591
Aww. Wonder if she'll make a return near the ending, along with Future-robo-girl or anyone else. Still, as Ryuuta said, it was fun while she was here. Anon paranoia and all.

>>3043595
I still find it refreshing that we haven't been afraid to spend them as we want, even for fun little things like the noodles or ink bomb hijinks. I think its better for us to burn them now for little character developments, and maybe save 1 at the very end.

Glad to see you are doing better, OP. It was a comfy ride through and through.

Nemuri is the best girl. We should have used the intervention to read her mind. I wish I hadn't missed that vote.
