Your name is Katsuo Tatsukuma, and after an extra night and day spent trudging through the thick, swampy forests of the Land of Hot Water, you're pretty damn tired of travelling. The trip was only supposed to take one day if you'd travelled fast enough, but apparently, the battle with the bandits on the bridge meant you had to stop and camp for nightfall. Then, Mariko and Tsunade's arguing lead to wild, hungry wolves to attack you in the middle of the night while you were trying to sleep. The next morning, Jun read the map the wrong way around, and ended up leading you down the wrong path for several hours.

https://youtu.be/4t__wczfpRI

Finally, you got the directions sorted, found your bearings, and Obito lead you all the right way to Yugakure. Now, you've made it. You're completely exhausted from all the travelling, and the lack of sleep last night, but you can't help but feel giddy with excitement as you see Yugakure more and more clearly as you get closer. The gates are ornate and lit up with brightly glowing lights in the form of the sigil of the Hot Spring. You're actually about to enter the first village other than your own home of the Leaf.

You try to contain yourself as you get closer, and you try to get a good look at the shinobi guarding the gates. They look bored and out-of-shape, and not a single one of them is actually on guard, with them just chatting amongst one another as you enter the gates. They barely even look at you, before letting you enter their village. Perhaps what the farmer said about the state of Yugakure's shinobi was correct.

At this time, it seems like the main street of Yugakure is very crowded. You see massive crowds of people walking through the village, with many bearing head-bands and markings of being from all sorts of different villages. Yugakure seemed to be working hard on being a neutral place for any kind of ninja, seemingly as the only way for the village to survive after giving up on war. It seemed to have worked out for them however, as the village that had once been considered weak was now advanced and thriving, although it still could be considered weak in some ways.

"Well," Obito says, with a yawn as you find a quiet place to stop and talk amongst yourselves for a moment. "I am beat! I was gonna try to check out the local ramen shops, but I think I'm just gonna head to the hotel and sleep."

"No way!" Mariko cries out in protest, "Obito-sensei, you can't just leave us alone in a brand new city on our first time out, can you?! We're not tired, we need to see the sights!" You're not sure why she's so worked up about this, especially since she was the one complaining about how tired she was for the entire trip to Yugakure.

Obito shrugs, "How about Lady Tsunade?"

The Sannin shakes her head, laughing slightly, as she'd been trying to sneak away before Obito mentioned her name. "O-oh, I can't! I have some business to take care of! I'll see you guys later tonight at the hotel!" She waves, before making a hasty retreat down a side street. She left in quite the hurry, perhaps she's trying to track down that mysterious S-rank missing-nin she'd mentioned before?

Obito gives up, "Whatever. You're old enough to take care of yourselves. Stay safe, don't get hurt, if there's any trouble, come wake me up." He says, before sleepy trudging off towards the Hotel, which luckily is clearly marked and labeled with a huge neon sign. At least you know where to find him, and presumably your bed as well.

You turn back towards your companions, "Well, what now?" You ask, looking between the two of them.

Jun taps his chin, "I want to try to find out more about the people of Yugakure, see what life is really like for them." He says, clearly still thinking about the encounter with the farmer on your way towards the village.

Mariko scoffs, "Are you serious? I want to explore the village! This place is huge, and it seems like it has everything! Imagine what you could find just exploring this place!" She seems very excited, her wide eyes glittering as she looks around the neon lighting surrounding you.

You think on it for a second, but you don't need to think very hard before making your difference. You've never really been the best at talking to people, especially a bunch of strangers in a whole new village. Not to mention, even though you're trying to act cool, you can't help but be somewhat awed by the sights of Yugakure yourself.

With a shrug, you look to Jun. "I think I wanna go exploring with her. I wanna check this place out some more."

Jun pauses for a moment, looking between you and Mariko, and then he nods. "Alright then. I'll see you guys back at the hotel!" He says, before splitting off to start looking for people to talk to. Even just on the street you're walking on, there are massive crowds of people walking both ways.

Now, it's just you and Mariko. You keep ending up alone with her, even though she's hands-down the most annoying member of your team. She ticks all the boxes, she's loud, aggressive, arrogant, and never stops talking. Somehow though, you've grown to tolerate her since you first met her. Most of the time, at least.

As she's walking ahead of you, she speaks up. "Thanks, by the way." You almost don't hear her at first, since she's looking away from you and speaking pretty quietly, but you're pretty shocked.

"The Senju princess? Thanking me? I really must be improving." You say, teasingly. She turns towards you angrily, her face completely flushed.

"Shut up! I could have handled those bandits without you anyways! You just helped a bit. Don't get a big head, you're still just a commoner compared to me." She turns her head away from you, crossing her arms over her chest and pouting. You've clearly touched a nerve, but you can't keep yourself from chuckling. She's pretty fun to tease, at the very least.

As the two of you walk, you see a vendor selling maps of the city. "Ooh!" Mariko gasps, quickly rushing over to the vendor. You follow behind her, as she starts chatting with the vendor, almost immediately pulling her coin purse from her robe. "So, this map will show us everything we need to find in the city?" She asks, already counting out her coins.

"Yes! Everything you need and more, for a girl like you. You're a ninja from Konoha, right? The Hidden Leaf?" The gnarled, old shopkeeper says, reaching out and stroking Mariko's face. You're about to interfere, when he suddenly jerks his hand away, taking the money from Mariko. "Praise Jashin." He says, bowing his head to the two of you, as you walk away with the map.

"What a creep!" Mariko says, shuddering. "Here," she hands you the map. "Decide where you wanna check out first!"

Are you one of the anons that was super buttmad about how their last fight ended?

If so, Kek.

It was just Ippo shit, man. We beat the fuck out of that boy, that was just Mini trying to be stylish.

And for those that have absolutely no idea what I'm fucking talking about, go read Boruto quest. It's worth the read.

I admit I was upset but not severely so. It just seemed to come out of nowhere and didn't feel like it was something we worked for. Mini's explanation helped a bit but it still felt like it was a bit at odds with the spirit of the character. Plus it felt more tacked on because mini wanted to run an ippo quest. I love ippo shit but it felt out if left field.

I was more joking about how that route got abandoned so fast because we looked like her brother so it was weird.

Yea it definitely puts a bad taste in the mouth. I thought he had the best interactions with her but after we found that out it colored all of the past closeness and made it gross and/or sad at best.
>>

I'm hoping (if Mini hasn't gotten himself Isekai'd, and manages to survive running Ippo to get back to Bort) that after the timeskip we can get a good platonic friendship going.
>>
>>3037284
That's about the best we can hope for. It felt kinda of deliberate that when people started getting more serious about pursuing her that mini dropped that revelation. At least with still have a chance with Salad I guess.

You shrug, unfolding the map and taking a look at it. It's actually hand-drawn, by that weird street vendor guy, but from what you can tell, it does seem to be pretty accurate, although there is a symbol you don't recognize marking the map in a few random places. Eventually, you decide on a place to check out first, or rather, your growling stomach picks for you. "Hey, I'm starving. Did you wanna get some food? It says the food stalls are pretty close, and Obito did mention checking out the local ramen places. I'll even pay, since you got the map."

Mariko nods, "I guess I am pretty hungry... Sure! You can pay me back for being so rude, earlier." You decide not to ask about what specifically she's referring to. She might be talking about a few different possibilities.

https://youtu.be/We60ZX5C99I

You do your best to follow the map, and soon enough, the smell of freshly cooked seafood floods your senses. You've definitely arrived at the food vendors. You're fairly excited to try it out, actually. Konoha isn't anywhere near fresh water, so seafood is fairly rare for you, and when you do, it's usually some puny fish a local fisherman caught from the river or something that's been imported and sitting for a few days.

As you walk through the marketplace with Mariko, vendors are trying to get you to buy expensive food all over the place, in the massive crowd of people, it's a bit overwhelming, especially when you look into your wallet to find you really don't have that much money. Only a bit of what you saved up from your gardening mission you did. Not really enough to buy much at a place like this.

After exploring the market for a little while, you think you find a few options that would fit within your price range and be enough for both you and Mariko. As you're about to decide, a strange man grabs your arm, pulling you away from Mariko and over to your stall.

In a whispered voice, the man speaks. "You're looking to eat, right? I have the perfect date meal for you, right here, perfect for two young lovebirds to share!" You look at what he has, it's icecream, from Sunagakure, clearly intended for couples to share. It's very expensive though, it'd cost your entire reward money from your mission. What food do you purchase?

Why not?

>>3037356
Oh yea! I forgot we had a moment or two with her. I was mainly thinking of lettuce-chan due to that epilogue fight.
>>
>>3037400
>a moment or two
I mean, she was literally the impetus for our entire character arc. We became a ball of iron fucking will as a direct result of that first spar with Mari, and having to learn why she was so pissed off at us.
Waldorf taught us techniques, but Mari changed our entire worldview.
Salad's absolutely a top shelf rival, though.
>>
>>3037364
>Go ahead and buy the romantic ice-cream.

I feel like this is going to backfire.
>>
>>3037418
I'm not going to completely disagree as it's been awhile since I've read it, but I thought it was how just about everybody effortlessly shat on us just by nature of their birth that really drove us. How they didn't have to even try and the unfairness of it all.
>>

>takoyaki were hungry and should get something a little more filling, plus if we get doesn't toppings we could share.

We're eating dinner with her so that makes this a date, and if this is a date then we can't screw this up or she'll be pissed off. If she's pissed off then she'll go and tell everyone what a terrible date we are and then whose going to ever believe we're a great ninja? Nobody that's who.
>>
>>3037483
Flawless logic, truly.
>>

>>
>>3037494
I was thinking more like "oh nice, icecream is my favorite dessert"
>>
>>3037524
Anon, no way is that ice cream worth the price, especially not on a first totally-not-date.
Something like that is for when we actually choose, in character, to start pursuing Mariko romantically.

Eat something first and then see other stuff, Mariko has probably some info on merch for ninjas that they sell here, that s the reason she was enthusiastic for going around.

So she will be more interested in eat fast and search better equipment rather than a ice cream.
Plus shouldn t we wait some time before making a move ? Just for see if we have more options or Mariko is our type of girl.

Let s just have a fun nice day.

You pull yourself away from the icecream seller's grasp. Jeez, people in Yugakure sure are touchy. You hold up your hands and shake your head. "Uh, no thanks! We're not really a couple, she's just my teammate." You explain, as you start to walk away from the vendor. You try to hide the blush on your cheeks by walking ahead of Mariko aways. It's not like you really have any feelings for your obnoxious teammate, but to be misstaken as a couple by an absolute stranger... how embarassing.

You lead her towards one of the seafood shops you'd seen earlier. Based on the prices you'd seen as you walked by earlier, a meal for the two of you will leave you with some spending money left over. It's a bit pricier than the other options, but you are pretty hungry, and it's not like fresh seafood is something you can have every day in Konoha. Not to mention, it'll give you the opportunity to try new and exciting foods, and isn't that one of the most exciting parts of travelling someplace?

"How about this?" you ask, turning back towards Mariko.

"Hmmm," she squints at the stall, looking at it suspiciously. "Fine." She says, eventually, after determining you weren't trying to poison her somehow.

You walk up to the vendor, and quickly order two plates of the unique looking seafood with a name you struggled to pronounce, apparently one of Yugakure's most traditional dishes. You and Mariko find an empty table to sit at nearby, and start to eat. Well, Mariko eyes it suspiciously for a while, while you start to eat. It's actually pretty great, apparently made with fish that only swim in the great sea that surrounds and makes up the Land of Water. You remember in a history book, reading that Kirigakure is immensely protective of the right to fish in its waters, punishing fisherman that fish without permission from the Daimyo with death. It must be a big sign of trust that Yugakure is able to fish and act as a trading partner of the Bloody Mist. Of course, Konoha has never had good relationships with Kirgakure, which makes you wonder how one of Konoha's supposed best allies got in so good with them.

For now though, you just enjoy the meal.

"What even is this stuff?" You hear Mariko ask, sounding pretty disgusted as she lifts a mysterious tentacle from the plate.

You shrug, "It's pretty good, you should give it a try."

She looks between you and the food and doesn't take a bite.

Combat poncho would be cool. Maybe give him a bandolier for scrolls. Might make up the gap for our weak ninjutsu. Having scrolls for mud walls or waterfalls could be endlessly useful if anything for utility reasons at the least.

It's generally talked about but closest I've seen is boruto quest and even then it ended at around storage seals, the family chakra storage seal, and that's about it I believe. It has been a very long while so anyone correct me if I'm remembering wrong

You smirk slightly and raise an eyebrow at Mariko. "Surely, the heiress to the great Senju clan won't be defeated by some fish?" You ask, teasingly. She glares at you, and then back at the meal in front of her.

"Of course not!" She scoffs, "In fact, just to show you, I'll eat all of it!" She shouts, before starting to scarf down as much of the food as she can as quickly as possible. You laugh, seeing her shift so suddenly towards eating it. She doesn't seem to mind the taste of it, now that she's started eating, either. Of course, she might just be shoveling it down her throat as fast as possible just to prove you wrong. You never really know.

You continue, taking your time with your meal and savoring it while Mariko scarfs it down across from you. As you eat, you start to notice something pretty strange. Everyone else around you are silent, and they're all doing their hardest to avoid looking at you. Almost as if they're afraid of you, is that just because of Mariko, or the fact that the two of you are shinobi? You scan over the people around you, many of them are sat in tables nearby eating their own meals, yet none are talking to one another, they're all simply staring down at their meals.

"How peculiar..." You mumble to yourself, trying to puzzle what exactly is going on here.

You try to focus on picking out anything out of the ordinary nearby, and surely enough, you spot a strange looking figure covered in black robes peering down at you from the rooftops. You almost wouldn't have noticed him, if you hadn't been searching for anything out of the ordinary. You do your best not to let on that you've seen them, but Mariko interrupts you as she slams her plate back down.

"Finished!" She proclaims loudly, giving you a large grin. "See, told ya I could do it!" She says, proudly. "I can't believe you really doubted me! I thought you were supposed to be smart, ohohoho!" She laughs to herself. You quickly turn back towards the rooftop, only to see the mysterious figure gone.

Something strange is going on in Yugakure, that's for sure.

"Where to next?" Mariko asks, grabbing the map from you. "Ooh! We should go shopping!" She cheers.

You look back towards Mariko, deciding you'd be better off not getting involved with whatever is going on here. You're still just a rookie genin, and if you got involved, there's a chance you'd just get in the way of whatever Lady Tsunade is doing. Assuming that all the strange happenings in Yugakure so far are somehow related to the missing-nin. For now, though, you might as well just try to enjoy yourselves and get to know this town a little bit better.

"Sure," You nod. "Let's check out the market." You haven't actually gone shopping in quite a while, you're interested to see what things they have for sale in Yugakure, even if your meals already took a decent portion of your saved up ryo.

You and Mariko start walking, doing your best to follow the map and not get too lost or confused amidst the busy hustle and bustle of the crowds. After a few wrong turns, you snatch the map back from Mariko and lead the two of you to the market properly, although she seems pretty annoyed with you at first, her mood soon changes as she sees the massive variety of shops available. "Wow! They must have everything here!" She grabs your hand and quickly starts pulling you over towards a nearby building. "In here!" She almost shouts.

You drag your feet a bit and look up, reading the sign. "A tailor, huh?" You scratch the back of your head. "What do you need that for? I thought we were gonna be picking up some more shinobi tools." You express your trepidation, stopping and standing outside the entrance to the tailor.

Mariko turns back towards you and shakes her head. "Don't be silly, it's not for me!" She chirps, and then, after seeing you continue to not budge, she sighs. "Katsuo, you've been wearing that same old ninja academy uniform for the entire time I've known you!" She says, crossing her arms over her chest. "If I have to have a nerd like you in my squad, the very least you could do is not look like such a total peasant! Besides, I want a pretty dress."

You raise an eyebrow, looking down at your clothes. "What's wrong with this? It works fine!" You try to protest, but she refuses to hear you out.

"Ohohoho!" She laughs, covering her mouth with her hand. "That's ridiculous! It's unbecoming, and it reflects on me too, since you're my comrade! I'll even buy it for you!" She reaches into a pocket and pulls out a large, stuffed coinpurse.

Your old academy clothes have gotten you through plenty of rough times, and they do have a bit of sentimentality to them, but they also don't fit you as well as they used to, and you are the only genin in your graduating class still in your academy clothes...

Which ones? I recall 2 good looking but oblivious MCs but no average looking ones.

I thought Takeshi, Kon, and Kuro were all kinda weird looking. Same with most of the Clan PCs but I don't really remember them.
>>
>>3063700
Takeshi was bort quest right? He was always described as a young aizen, which is definitely on the better looking end of the spectrum. Kon looked weird, not average. Don't know the last one.

>>3063700
Oh yea and almost all of the clan members of were good looking but oblivious about it. Everyone wanted Hiki and his brother and they never got it.

Leaf Ninja, at least up to the point that I fell off of following due to life obligations (I really need to go back and read the rest), had a solid concensus of Kon being super plain and unremarkable. Did that change?
Bort, Takeshi's only remarkable in any way appearance-wise due to being a doppelganger for Shozuku.
Which were the good looking but oblivious ones?
>>
>>3063734
With leaf ninja he always had his eyes closed and green hair which isn't really normal.
The oblivious ones are all the PCs in konoha clan quest minus the older cousin and I'd argue Takeshi was as well (yes doppleganger but still described as handsome).

Well it was fun but I wouldn't really call it "good." It ran on memes and the will of the dice gods.
>I'd argue Takeshi was as well
I could see the argument, though I'd say it's more that generic way that all fictional characters who aren't ugly are good looking. He always struck me as having a design that in an anime would say "important enough to have a name and a unique design, but not actually important." Because while adult Aizen makes panties drop, young Aizen is just kinda plain.
>>
>>3063769
Fair enough but that's still only a max of one other nart MC that's average looking.

I could care less about his looks as long as he's the straight man of the group. I like the idea that we ignore/are oblivious to the other characters antics.

You shrug, "Fine, if it's such a big deal. I'm not gonna turn down new clothes. Thanks, I owe you, I guess."

"You owe me twice over, now." She says, a smirk on her face.

You pause for a second, and then shake your head. "If you're talking about the map, I got the food, remember? And if you're talking about you saving me from Hinata, I paid that back when I saved you from those bandits."

"You didn't save me!" She protests, and then pouts, "And besides, I wasn't talking about any of that. The bells, remember?" She reaches into her pocket and pulls out a shiny silver bell, holding it up.

"You actually kept that?"

Her face turns bright red. "O-of course I did! N-not like it means anything to me! I just... didn't want it to be a waste of my hard-earned ryo!" As she furiously blushes and tries not to show how embarrassed she is, you chuckle, and reach into your own pocket, withdrawing another bell.

"I'm kidding." You smirk.

"You're mean." She pouts, leading you into the tailor.

As you enter, a large man sitting behind a desk stands up, presumably the tailor. "Welcome!" He says, with a jolly grin as he looks down at the two of you. "What brings you kids in today? Looking for clothes for the Hot Spring Festival?"

You shake your head, "No, we're not actually from around here. Just looking around." You're about to walk away, when Mariko approaches his counter.

"There's a festival?" She asks, barely able to contain her giddiness.

"Oh, yes, tomorrow!" The man says, "It's a tradition that happens every year. It's older than Yugakure itself is, actually. There's a parade down the main road, right down to the hot springs. It's said that on the day of the Hot Spring Festival, the waters here are blessed by the gods, and if you rest in them, whatever your deepest desire is will eventually come true."

Mariko turns to you, grinning ear to ear. "We should go!"

You shrug, "Maybe. You wanted to look at clothes, right?" You attempt to remind Mariko of the reason you walked in here in the first place.

"Oh, right!" She says, shuffling over to you. "Well, what are you looking for?"

You start to browse the shelves of different clothes. Your family's never been super well off, so you're not exactly used to going shopping. In fact, the variety of options are a little overwhelming, especially when you notice the price tags on some of these things! Well, at the very least, you're able to cut down on your options.

> The black robes covered in strange red markings you found at the very back of the store.
These look great, and I bet are very practical for a ninja such as ourself!

You look over the various garments to choose from, excluding the things you'd never wear, even if your life depended on it, and the things outside your price range, there aren't actually too many options, which makes it easier for you. You don't need too long before you make a decision, although the other options are tempting, really the most practical choice that suits you the best is probably the plainest. You reach out for the completely black one-piece uniform clearly designed for stealth, with an attached mask you can even pull up to cover up your face.

It's far from the flashiest option, and as you pick it out, Mariko groans. "Somehow I knew you'd pick the most boring option possible. Go try it on while I pick out my dress." She says, turning and walking over towards the women's section, excitedly comparing different dresses. You feel a bit silly having been conservative on price, considering Mariko only seems to be looking at the most expensive and extravagent dresses. She really does act like a princess sometimes.

You head over towards a changing room, and quickly set about trying on your new costume. You run through a few tests in your new suit, stretching and going through some basic exercises to test how movement feels in it. It's definitely more mobile than your stiff, heavy academy clothes, and it'll certainly allow you to sneak around more easily and be noticed far less, which only facilitates your genjutsu even more. It won't offer you any protection from a kunai to the chest, but it will mean that most of the time, hopefully, you'll know your opponent's location before they'll know yours. It leaves your arms exposed, but with a cloak worn over them, it's a negligible difference.

You can't help but smile, as you watch yourself put your forehead protector back on in the mirror. You actually look like a shinobi now, a real one, rather than some kid pretending to be one. It doesn't quite fit you perfectly, but you're only twelve years old, you're sure you'll grow into it more later on. For now, though, it should serve you well. At the very least, better than your old academy uniform was doing for you.

You walk out of the changing room, only to see Mariko already standing and already changed. She picked her dress out that quickly? It's an expensive looking, bright red kimono, decorated with delicately detailed golden orchids, and a beautiful golden silk sash. You raise an eyebrow, and she shrugs. "What? I have taste, unlike some of us. I swear, we came in here to make you look like less of a peasant, not more of one!" She says, before storming up to the shopkeeper, and handing him a lot of ryo.

"So, where to next?" She asks, a bright grin on her face as she leads you out of the shop.
