/qst/ - Quests

You are Myon Uesugi, a 10 year old girl being trained in the killing arts of the Shinobi by the Ninja of Kirigakure, the Village Hidden in the Mist. At a very young age, your family sailed away from the small island you were born on and moved to Kirigakue so that you could begin your training as soon as you were of age. Your father is a Hidden Mist Chunin himself, a Journeyman Ninja, as well as a veteran of the last great Shinobi War fought between the Hidden Villages. You were too young at the time to remember what that war was like, all you really know was that many old grudges from that conflict have yet to be forgiven or forgotten. Some whisper rumors that a Third Shinobi War is brewing yet again just beyond the sea….

Your childhood is quickly coming to an end, for tomorrow you will take your final test before becoming a True Shinobi. This very test has informally given your village a fearsome title, “The Village of the Bloody Mist"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9rKokFEZTk

You slowly awaken to the rumbling boom of thunder, groggily lifting your head off of your futon to observe a sunless morning outside your window. A fog has rolled in, so thick that you can barely see over your front lawn to the waters that lap against the rocky coastline. Your room is small and bare, for even with the considerable money your father earns your family has opted for a simple lifestyle with little luxury. The only prominent items on display here are the katana that your father gifted you with a year ago and the well-crafted fishing pole leaning against the wall beside it.

You have a long day of classwork at the academy ahead of you, but with your final test so close at hand you know that there won’t be any more like it. Crawling off of your futon, you rise to your feet and stretch your back before walking down the hall to your bathroom. After splashing some cool water into your face, you take a good look at yourself in the mirror. Blue eyes blink back at you through locks of black hair that messily block your view of your wiry frame. Picking up a toothbrush, you open your mouth and reveal sharp jagged teeth not entirely unlike that of a shark, a physical trait that’s fairly common amongst the people of Kirigakure and supposedly something you inherited from your father. After you finish cleaning yourself up, you hear the familiar sound of a knife striking wood and realize that your mother must be preparing breakfast.

>“Good morning Myon-chan.” your mother chimes as you walk into the kitchen. You find her standing at the counter chopping up a fish, dressed casually in a Yukata robe with her long black hair worn down.
“Good morning mother.” you reply, giving her a slight bow before taking a seat at the table. Several plates have already been set, one for you, your mother, and your absent father.
>“Breakfast will be ready in just a few. I hope your hungry!” Your mother gives you a smile before continuing to slice up a hunk of fish on her cutting board.

Another clap of thunder booms outside, and not a moment later an infant begins to wail.

>“Ohhhh, not again.” your mother groans while looking over to the wooden crib on the opposite side of the kitchen. “Your brother just can’t stand this weather. Poor baby.”

You sigh, standing back up and walking over to the crib.

“Keiji. Keeeeiiiiji,” your little brother stops crying as you gently rock his cradle. “There there… hm?"

You turn your head and glance outside. Sniffing the air, you detect a strange odor amidst the sea-salt breeze. With a frown, you walk away from your brother’s crib and step outside the kitchen and onto your house’s wooden patio.

Your eyes scan the grassy lawn as best you can in this thick fog until you notice a puddle in an otherwise dry patch of dirt. With a smirk, you fold your arms over your chest and stare at the puddle.

>“Damn.” You watch as a girl with long blonde hair and tan skin, a blue oni mask covering her mouth and nose, suddenly emerges from the puddle. “How’d you know I was coming?”
“Your stench.” you grin while walking off your patio. “You reek of cigarettes, even when you’re using the Hiding-in-Water Technique. Those things will kill you one day Big Sis”

Your classmate chuckles whilst lowering her Oni mask. She reveals a smug smirk before reaching into her kunai holster and brandishing a cigarette.

>"I like smoke better than air.” she grins whilst lighting her cig. "If I could I’d smoke underwater too."

Rolling your eyes, you give Junko, or “Big Sis” as you affectionately call her, a light punch to the shoulder.

“So what brings you out here?” you ask Junko while she exhales a puff of smoke.
>“Well, today's our last day before ‘The Test.’”Junko mutters whilst rubbing her shoulder "I figured we could just skip class, maybe hit up the arcade?”
“Junko,” you frown at her. “the last time we tried playing hooky, Sensei nearly—“
>“No one's gonna care if we play hooky now Myon.” Junko interrupts. “They got nothing left to teach us! Besides, its not like doing a few extra pushups is gonna make a difference tomorrow.”

An uncomfortable silence falls over your yard. Your friend had something of a point. Tomorrow could be the day you die.

What will Myon do?

>Go to the Academy for your last day of class
>Play hooky with your friend Junko

Welcome to Ninja of the Bloody Mist quest! Its been a while since I’ve ran anything on this board, but I’m hoping to have a little fun with this to pass the time if nothing else. NBM is set in roughly the same setting as Naruto, although this story takes place years before Naruto is born and I’ve taken a few liberties with the setting. My favorite arcs in Naruto have always been the first several involving the Land of Waves and the Chunin Exam, and I hope to emulate those stories a bit in this quest.

You stare into the fog for nearly a minute, with Junko waiting for your answer with bated breath.

“I think I’ll pass.”

>”Awwww, but Myon!"

Your friend groans, but you’ve made up your mind. Even if it was the last real day of class, you never know what you could pick up from your instructors or classmates. Every little trick you could learn might end up saving your life, at least that’s what your father would say…

>”Totally lame.” Junko huffs, flicking her cigarette away into the fog. “Oh well, maybe I’ll catch you later. Try not to break a sweat lil sis.”

Rolling your eyes once more, you find yourself looking back at your house. The delicious scent of the fish your mother is broiling for breakfast is much stronger than that of Junko’s cigarettes.

“Hey, you eat?” You jab a thumb back at your house. “You’re welcome to join me and my family for breakfast.”

>”Huh?” she peers over your head at your house and blinks at it. “Well, uh… nah. No thanks. I don’t wanna intrude.”

“You wouldn’t be intruding.” you mutter towards her as she disappears into the fog. “Hmph."

>”Myon-chan!” Your mother calls out. “Breakfast is ready!”

You walk out your front door feeling refreshed after a good meal. Having slipped into a clean dark outfit, you lightly tap the katana affixed to your waist out of reflex just to ensure its there. A quick look upwards at the darkening sky informs you that the storm is slowly approaching. You’ll have to hurry if you want to make it into the village without getting drenched.

Breaking out into a run, you race against the storm as you leave your humble home behind. Rushing up and down several hills and taking your usual shortcut through a farmer’s rice paddy, you soon find yourself looking down upon Kirigakure. The winds from the rapidly approaching storm cut through the dense mist, leaving the village not quite as hidden as usual. You are able to see many of its densely packed tenement towers and crowded streets from where you stand. Your eyes dart past all of this and zero in on the massive complex at the heart of the village that houses the academy.

It amazes you a little how quickly you’re able to reach the village, at least compared to how slow your commute was before you began your training. With this thought clouding your mind, you sprint into the village itself as the first drops of rain begin to drizzle down onto your head. Distracted by your errant thoughts and the coming rain, you nearly fail to notice the trap you are running right into.

>“Hey kid!"

You slide to a stop in the middle of a narrow street in the middle of Kirigakure. Narrowing your eyes, you watch as a pair teenage men, various scars and tattoos adorning their bodies, emerge from an alley way up ahead. Glancing over your shoulder, you spot another pair of similar looking thugs appear. It would seem that they have trapped you.

>”What’s a pretty little girl like you doing out here all alone?” one of the thugs chuckles, revealing a wooden baseball bat that he rests on his shoulder.

>”Fancy sword you got there, is it real? Looks expensive!” the thug beside him shouts, brandishing a switchblade out of his cheap-looking kimono.

Having yet to earn your headband, there isn’t really anything about your attire that suggests you’ve received any training in the Shinobi arts. Still, you think it foolish that this gang of thugs would think you an easy mark.

Your class will begin soon, and you’d rather avoid pissing off your sensei by showing up late. To get to the academy on time, you realize you’re going to have to rely on your expertise as a Shinobi.

What is your primary ability as a Shinobi-in-training?

>Kenjutsu. You have trained tirelessly with the blade, and can easily overcome common thugs with simple swordplay
>Ninjutsu. You have all but mastered the basic water-based techniques taught to students in Kirigakure, more than enough to handle a few muggers
>Chakra Control. You have learned how to wield your own innate chakra as easily as any weapon, and can dispatch simple thugs with physical feats only a ninja could do

>Kenjutsu

Shooting the closest thug in front of you a glare, you grab your scabbard with one hand while grasping the hilt with the other.

>“Oh? Does the little girl wanna fight?” The man, little more than a boy really, laughs while approaching you with a knife in his hand. “Relax kid, we ain’t gonna hurt ya! Ruining a pretty face like that won’t make us any—“

“Iado jutsu!"

In the blink of an eye, you draw your katana from its scabbard, splash a few droplets of blood onto the ground, and reholster your blade. The thug’s eyes widen as his knife falls to his feet beside the fingers that were holding it.

“ARRRGH!!!” the man screams, holding his bloodied hand while falling to his knees. “WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!”

Your eyes widen as the man howls in pain, his companions balking at the bloody scene before them. Your gaze drifts down to the blood pooling at his knees. This wasn’t the first time you had drawn blood with your blade, but the ease with which you had brought this man down and the sheer agony he seems to be in has caught you off guard.

>”You brat!” the other thug in front of you shouts. “You’re dead!”
>”Hey wait!” one of the thugs behind you cries. “d-Did she just say something about a jutsu?!"

Glancing over your shoulder, you see a look of fear plastered over the mugger’s face. He’s no doubt realized what they’re dealing with.

You shake yourself out of your stupor and grasp the hilt of your sword once more.

“Get out of my way.” you sneer, drawing your blade just an inch out of its scabbard. “NOW!”

Your voice cracked as you yelled, but you seemed to get your message across. The man you had sliced up grabs his missing fingers and is helped to his feet by his companion, who shuffles over to the rest of their gang. The way open once more, you speed off down the street as raindrops begin to fall in earnest onto your head.

You don’t look back as you try to put this grisly scene behind you, grim thoughts of what was to come tomorrow resurfacing in your head.

but if you wanted her to dress with a leather jacket or make any other minor changes to her appearance then that sounds reasonable to me. The only things about her appearance I've stated were her black hair and shark-like teeth, ya'll are free to build off of that as time goes on.

>>3033203
Ah, I thought doing so would help make it clearer who is speaking but if that's an issue then I can write without it.

Yeah no green-text is traditionally used to denote player choices, it's super distracting as dialogue.

Interesting quest though, looking forward to see what you do with it.

You breathe heavily as you step down a dimly let hallway inside Kirigakure’s Shinobi Academy, your heart still racing after your short but bloody encounter with those street thugs. Your hair is a little soaked from the rain but thankfully your leather jacket kept you mostly dry when the storm hit the area. As you reach the double doors to the classroom, you pause and take a deep breathe to steady your nerves. Exhaling, you push the doors open and prepare to meet your classmates.

The room before you is a large concrete chamber featuring a massive in-door pool that takes up the majority of the floor space. Scanning the place, you see that there are just over a dozen students standing off to the side. Your class is slightly smaller today than expected, leading you to believe that perhaps Junko wasn’t the only student to skip class. Of those present, a few notable faces stick out amidst the crowd.

Over to the side, leaning against the wall, are two boys you recognize as the cool and collected Naoko and the hot-tempered Gin. Naoko is an exceptionally handsome boy with long black hair that always reminded you a little of your mother. Truth be told, when the two of you originally met you mistook Naoko for a girl and were completely caught off guard when you saw him enter the boy’s locker room one day. His cool nature was always a stark contrast to the shirtless redheaded Gin, whose excitable nature often landed him in trouble with classmates and instructors alike. Some would think it strange that the two would get along so well, but they did have one special trait in common. The two boys were both members of powerful, yet infamous, ninja clans. You personally don’t understand the nature of their powers, but you know that they’re status in the village is really no better than a clanless ninja like yours. Incidentally, this makes them easy to approach.

The same cannot be said for one of the other students you spot. Crouching in front of the pool of water, apparently smiling at her own reflection, was an albino girl with two scarlet dots on her forehead named Kasumi. While you’ve never conversed much with her, you were well aware that Kasumi was someone who lived for battle. You vividly recall how an instructor had to pin her down once to keep her from beating a classmate to death during a sparring duel. However, despite her viciousness she always regarded the people around her with a friendly politeness. This behavior easily creeped out many other students, who usually tried to avoid her.

Perhaps you could take your mind off of your unpleasant encounter with that gang by talking to one of your classmates? Then again, you could just warm up a bit before class starts with some physical exercise and sword kata.

>Go speak with Kasumi

While you’ve mostly kept your distance from her throughout your time here at the academy, you decide to take a chance today and speak with the enigmatic Kasumi. Walking over, you can’t help but notice a fair amount of distance between the girl and the rest of your classmates as if people were consciously giving her space. The lack of chatter from the rest of the class allows you to hear Kasumi, who is evidently humming a song to herself whilst dipping a hand into the water. When you get close enough, she ceases her merry tune and turns her head to you. Her emerald green eyes stare as you stand behind her.

“Uh, good morning Kasumi.” you mutter while rubbing the back of your neck. “How’re you?”

The albino gives you a rather long blank stare before flashing a smile and standing up tall. In her hand appears to be a half-eaten chocolate candy bar which she promptly wraps back up in its foil before stowing away in her robes.

“Good morning Myon-san.” Kasumi gives you a slight bow, something you’ve rarely ever received let alone from someone your own age. “I’m doing great today. Just thinking about tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?” You raise an eyebrow at Kasumi. “You mean—“

“The Final Test, yes!” Kasumi’s smile widens as she cups her hands together in front of her bosom. “Are you excited as well? Finally, we will all have a chance to cut loose and show what we’re really capable of. Several of my clanmates said they were coming to watch too, I can’t wait to show them what I’ve learned.”

“Oh, I see.” You try to return Kasumi’s smile as best you can, although whatever you manage can’t compare to her almost innocent grin. “Its uh, nice to know your family is coming out to support you.”

“Yes, I’m a very lucky girl~” she replies in a sing-song tone. “What about your family Myon?”

“My family?” you furrow your brow at her. “Well, my father is away on a mission. He won’t be around to see me, and my mother…”

You shudder to think of how your mother would react if she were to come and watch you during tomorrow’s test. She is no ninja, no warrior. While the two of you rarely spoke together about your training, you couldn’t help but wonder just how stressed out she might be over your safety.

You dispel that uncomfortable image of your mother right now and smile back at Kasumi.

“So, uh….”

“… yeah, I actually am a little excited.” you find your smile growing as you look back confidently into Kasumi’s eyes, as if her smile was contagious. “We’ve spent years training here almost every day, and now we'll finally get to cut loose just like you said.”

Raising a fist, you show Kasumi your razor sharp teeth as you proudly proclaim. “I can’t wait to kick some ass.”

“Hmm?” Kasumi blinks at you, and suddenly you are aware of some of the eyes of your classmates zeroing in on you as well. “Oh ho ho ho ho!~”

Your cheeks redden as Kasumi’s laughter fills the otherwise tense training chamber. Once she finishes her booming laughter, she places her hands on her hips and says—

“I feel the same way Kasumi-san. Tomorrow will be fun, and once its over people like you and I will finally be ninja! OR we’ll be dead.”

Your eyes widen as Kasumi mutters that last caveat.

“But I doubt recruits like the two of us will be amongst the dead.” she quickly adds while patting you on the back. "After all, you’re arguably the best swordsman in the entire class and I could never let my clan down by dying this soon.”

“Hmph.” You fold your arms over your chest as you stare at Kasumi. “Hey, what exactly is your clan like anyway? I’ve never met any of your family before.”

“Oh, well my family is quite old you see.” Kasumi raises a finger while resting her other hand against her hip. “My ancestors were among the first to learn how to wield chakra, becoming ninjas many many years before the Hidden Villages were founded. It was during a period of endless warfare that my family, the Kaguya clan, rose to greatness.”

“The Kaguya clan?” You ask as you rack your thoughts for any info on Kasumi’s family. “Your family, they’re supposed to have some kind of ‘special jutsu’ aren’t they?”

Kasumi opens her mouth, but before she has a chance to speak a much louder and coarser voice fills the room.

“RECRUITS! Stand at attention!”

You move almost on pure reflex as you turn away from Kasumi and rush to a specific crack on the concrete floor that you marked as yours long ago. Soon enough, every other student in the room has also moved to a certain spot on the ground where they stand tall with their arms flat against their sides.

In front of everyone, on top of the pool of water is a Chunin by the name of Katsuyori, or as you call him “Sensei.” He is a fairly muscular man with a shaved head whose deep dark glare seems permanently etched into his gaze.

“Today is the last day of your Academy Training. You should feel proud!” he shouts, his glower passing from student to student. “You have succeeded where others have failed, and toughed it out where others would quit. Everything we put you through has been designed to either scare away the weak, or BEAT the weakness out of you!”

His gaze intensifies until you feel his eyes are peering directly into yours

“Tomorrow, you will become truly great or you will perish. Don’t you dare back down now!”

He turns away from you all and marches further atop the water until he is standing in the middle of the vast pool.

“Today’s classes will be simple and quick. AND you will have an audience!” he shouts as he gestures up to the balcony directly above your heads. “Several Shinobi have come here today to watch you fight, just as they will tomorrow during your final test. Know that one of them will likely become your new sensei after the test has finished.”

Sensei Katsuyori becomes silent for a moment as his words leave an impression on you and your classmates. You realize that, depending on how well you perform in your final test you may end up being trained by a greater ninja. The greatest of those who perform during this exam may end up with a sensei who is an ANBU, or a Hunter-Nin, or even one of the Legendary 7 Swordsmen themselves…

“NOW THEN! We will host a few sparring sessions. These fights will be to first-blood, whoever spills their opponent’s blood into the water first will be declared the victor. Who will step up and fight?”

Kasumi immediately shoots her hand into the air and excitedly waves it at Sensei.

“Oh!” Kasumi squeaks. "Oh, me please! I’ll go first!”

Sensei’s frown intensifies, as he searches for OTHER volunteers besides Kasumi. It would seem you have a chance to step forward and volunteer for a sparring match. There's a good chance you could end up fighting Kasumi, who seems eager to spill someone's blood. Then again, the two boys from the "Infamous" clans are also fairly close by. Perhaps you could whisper to one of them and ask if they'd rather duel with you?

Still riding some of the high from your talk with Kasumi, you push your hand up into the air and flag your sensei down.

“No guts no glory!” you grumble as your sensei locks eyes with you. “I volunteer to fight!”

Sensei huffs as he calls out over the waters.

“The first combatants will be Myon Uesugi and Kasumi Kaguya! Step into the combat pool!"

Kasumi quietly pumps a fist before bouncing on top of the indoor pool, performing a quick flip across the water as she lands near the center close beside Sensei.

Furrowing your brow, you march past the rest of your classmates and stand before the pool. Raising two fingers up to your chin, you close your eyes and focus your chakra onto your feet. You can’t flip onto the water with as much speed and grace as Kasumi, but when you open your eyes you do put one foot onto the pool and begin to step across it as if you were walking on solid ground.

Pushing away your worries and stress, from the fight earlier with the street thugs to whatever apprehension you feel about tomorrow’s test, you focus on the task at hand. To be a ninja is to be a weapon of war, and you refuse to falter in the face of war as you approach Kasumi.

However, you do end up stopping just over halfway across the pool by what you end up seeing. For the first time, you see Kasumi's cheerful demeanor spoiled by a sense of shock. Her eyes are open wide and her jaw hangs open as she looks over you at the balcony above.

“What is she—“ you are at a loss for words as you too look up onto the viewing balcony. You expected to see several ninja just as sensei had said, but amidst the Shinobi that look down upon you there is one figure that stands out above them all.

“t-The Third?” you whisper as you stare at a figure clad in a white and blue cloak, his old blue eyes staring intensely straight into yours. “The Third Mizukage?”

“MYON UESUGI! Take your place on the opposite side of the field!” your Sensei shouts

Shaking your head, you look away from the man who you know to be the greatest ninja alive and jog over the water to your side of the pool. It is a much more difficult task now to clear your thoughts now that you know who is watching.

“Damnit,” you mutter. “c’mon Myon get it together. Don’t freaking choke here.”
Staring down Kasumi, who stands some 25 yards away with her usual grin having returned, you remember back to her earlier sparring matches. She is something of a maverick compared to most of the other students; Kasumi mostly forgoes the art of Kenjutsu in favor of Taijutsu. Logically, this means it should be much easier for you to spill her blood into the pool than it will be for her.

However, she is immensely skilled in hand-to-hand combat. You don’t feel like you should underestimate her Taijutsu.

“Combatants, ready….” Sensei raises his arm, and then chops through the air. “….FIGHT!”

In the blink of an eye, Kasumi breaks out into a sprint directly towards you!

"Show me what you got Myon!" Kasumi cries as her gaze. "I want to see blood!"

What will Myon do?!

Drawing your blade, you run after Kasumi with the intent of overcoming her ferocity with your own. The two of you make it across the pool and meet near the center in the span of only a few seconds. When you see the white in her eyes, you let out a battle-cry and strike at her with a vertical slash!

“Bah!” she mutters, gritting her teeth as she stumbles back not a moment too soon and narrowly avoids your attack. “HA!"

Your eyes widen as she swoops in with her fist raised back. She telegraphs her punch just enough for you to duck down in the nick of time, her blow sailing over your head as you twist past her.

“Its over!” You shout as you slash wildly at Kasumi’s backside, but to your surprise she breaks out into another sprint and avoids catching the brunt of your blade. “Damn!”

Raising your sword up high, you give chase to your foe across the surface of the water. Kasumi keeps herself just beyond your sword’s reach, her agility well beyond any opponent you’ve spared with in recent memory. She bobs and weaves, swerving every which way. Several times, she manages to swoop in and throw a punch at you but for the most part you’re able to keep her back. The advantage of your weapon’s reach is assisting you greatly thus far, and it shows.

You and Kasumi spar for nearly a full minute, and amazingly neither of you manage to hit one another with a definite blow. Your heart beats faster with every slice of your sword, and Kasumi’s smile grows larger with each punch or kick she manages to sneak in between dodging your strikes until finally….

>74
Success

“ACK!” Kasumi’s smile disappears, a sudden change that came like a bolt of lightning as your sword pierced her side.

“Did I— ARGH!“ you stumble backwards, a hand of yours falling over your gut as you break out of your battle stance.

Flinching in pain from Kasumi’s punch, you flip open a single eye and stare at your foe. Kasumi holds her white cloak tight against the side of her belly. You merely grazed her, but she’s definitely bleeding!

“I did!” you allow yourself a small smile. “Sorry Kasumi, but it looks like I—“

“My blood has yet to drip onto the water!” Kasumi shouts. “This, this isn’t over!”

You frown at her before stealing a glance at Sensei. His stony expression confirms what Kasumi has said. Kasumi rips off a piece of cloth from her clothing and attempts to staunch the wound while gritting her teeth. You’ve drawn her blood, but total victory eludes you…

>Go on the offensive again, it should be easy to make her spill her blood now
>Go on the defensive, all you need to do is wait her out now
>Use your Hiding-in-Mist technique, you should try to avoid her for now

Now that you clearly have the advantage, you choose to press the attack! Raising your sword up high, you let out a shrill cry as you charge Kasumi once more. Your opponent gasps, taking a step back and raising a single fist while desperately holding her ripped cloth against the open wound.

>89
>Great Success

Her movements have slowed considerably, leaving her far more vulnerable to the barrage of cuts and stabs you level upon her. The first strike of your sword tears through the fabric of her cloak and sends it falling beneath the water. Your second slash swipes by her head and severs a small lock of her hair. The third attack finally meets its mark.

“ACK!” Kasumi cries, both her hands falling down to a slice across her thigh. “By the Gods...”

You stare down at Kasumi as you resume a battle stance. Blood from her latest wound seeps through her fingers and trickles down her leg while the cloth in her older wound, now soaked red with blood, slips away onto the surface of the water.

“MYON UESUGI!” Your sensei shouts. “I DECLARE YOU THE VICTOR OF THIS DUEL!”

Breathing a contented sigh, you wick more of Kasumi’s blood off of your katana and into the water before sheathing your sword. However, before you can completely put it away in its scabbard Kasumi rises to her feet.

“Wait!” Kasumi shouts, loud enough to silence the applauding classmates. “Not yet! I’m not finished yet!”

“STAND DOWN KASUMI!” your sensei commands as he stomps across the water’s surface toward the two of you. “You WILL obey my orders!”

Kasumi is quite visibly a wreck at this point. Her body stained with blood, her clothes slightly shredded, and now that you have a chance to calmly observe you see that her feet are beginning to dip below the water’s surface as she loses concentration of her chakra control.

“Sensei— m-Myon-san, you don’t understand…” she whimpers, bowing her head slightly. “i-Its been so long since I’ve had to fight this hard, I was having so much fun.”

Stepping up beside Kasumi, who seems unable to lift her gaze up from the water’s surface, Sensei Katsuyori’s normally booming voice drops to a deathly whisper.

“Accept your defeat and go to the medical office Miss Kaguya, or I will have you lashed for daring to disobey me before the Mizukage.”

A chill runs down your spine as you hear Sensei threaten Kasumi, who seems to be incapable of little more than shaking. If you didn’t know better, you’d almost say that the same girl who was howling for your blood only a minute or two ago was now on the verge of tears…

What will Myon do?

"This is bad.” you mutter under your breathe. “Damnit.”

Clenching your fists and keeping your head held high, you march right up to Kasumi while she’s in the middle of her episode.

“Kasumi, snap out of it! You,” closing your eyes, you briefly mull over your words and lower your voice. “you need to calm down.”

Thinking back to this morning when you rocked your little brother’s cradle to calm him down during the storm, you place your hands on Kasumi’s shoulders and gently shake her. It draws her gaze up from the blood water she’s standing in and makes her focus on you instead.

>59
>Close Success

Remembering back to your conversations earlier with your sadistic classmate, you decide to bring her attention back to the Final Test.

“Tomorrow you’ll get to fight as much as you want, and no one will tell you to stop.” the albino stares intensely at you with an eerily blank gaze. “But you won’t be able to fight if you don’t get those injuries I gave you taken care of, and Sensei will beat you so that you won’t be able to fight at all.”

Kasumi gulps, her feet sinking deeper into the water as you stand several inches over her. She furrows her brow and sighs.

“Myon-san,” Kasumi whispers. “could you please help me out of the water? I feel very weak all of a sudden.”

You steal a glance up at Sensei, whose glare alone is enough to force you into action. Wrapping one of Kasumi’s arms over your shoulders, you assist her in not falling any deeper into the pool and begin to escort her toward solid land.

“Thank you Myon-san, I did not mean to lose my composure.” she mutters with a weak smile. “I hope you’ll forgive me.”

“Its… fine Kasumi.” you whisper while looking up to the balcony above. “Don’t mention it.”

You catch one last glance up at the various ninja standing up there before reaching the ground floor with Kasumi. You can’t help but wonder what must have been going through the Mizukage’s head as he watched you fight Kasumi.

Several of your classmates watch you and Kasumi walk by them as you help her onwards toward the infirmary, speaking to one another in hushed whispers. You also can’t help but wonder what they must be saying about the two of you.

“Weaklings.” Kasumi grumbles under her breath.
“What?” You ask Kasumi as the you leave the Pool Chamber behind.
“Do not heed their gossip Myon-san, they are beneath you. Tomorrow they will see…"

Timezones are a bitch. Don't worry too much about it anon. Looking forward to the final exam. Given that any country not the land of fire is way more brutal I can't wait to see how harsh our final exam is. Hopefully one of the seven swordsmen is our sensei.

Also are we gonna do squads of three? Sounded like it'd be 1 on 1 training after graduation due to people dying in the final test.

You find yourself sitting outside the medical-nin’s infirmary for a short while after dropping Kasumi off. A hand of yours nurses the bruise on your abdomen from where her fist struck you, a very minor injury you had all but forgotten about until the adrenaline from your duel had worn off. Kasumi was very strong for a girl your age, and you’re glad you won the fight without letting her land any other taijutsu strikes.

“Miss Uesugi?” a male voice calls out from down the hall. “Excuse me miss Uesugi.”

Rising out of your seat, you see a man dressed in the slate gray flak armor typical of the ninja of your village. He looks to be of around thirty years of age, and is instantly recognizable by his spiked blue hair and the eyepatch over his right eye. You are positive he was one of the men who stood on the balcony beside the Mizukage during your duel.

“Yes sir?” you reply while giving him a slight bow.

“You fought well back there.” the man glances over to the door to the medical wing. “How is Miss Kaguya’s injuries?”

“They said that she would be feeling sore for a while,” you furrow your brow at the medical wing as well. “but that she would be back in fighting condition after a good night’s rest.”

“Hmph, I expected as much.” the ninja turns his attention back to you with a stern look. “Would you care to walk with me back to the Training Pool?”

Having no reason to stay here any longer, you nod your head and walk with him down a dimly lit and windowless hallway. Your footsteps echo down the hall,a slightly unnerving silence falling over the two of you. You idly wonder if this man, after observing you fight, is considering you a possible candidate for training.

“Uh, sir—?”

“That Kasumi seems typical of her clan.” the gruff ninja interrupts. “Always spoiling for a fight, and not knowing when to back down. What do you think of her Miss Uesugi?”

“Me?” you blink up at him.

“Yes, she is your classmate after all. Be honest, what do you make of that one?"

Putting you on the spot, you tell him that…

With a frown, you dwell on Kasumi whilst walking down the hall with this mysterious ninja. You can’t help but feel a little sorry for her all things considered. None of your classmates ever really seemed to try to talk to her or understand her these past few years. You could understand why they wouldn’t, but it still didn’t feel right.

“Kasumi seems misunderstood.” you tell him, looking up into his stony expression. “Though its more no one seems to have tried to understand her. Your assessment of her is correct, but I feel she could be directed better with a proper mentor.”

The Ninja hums, apparently weighing your own assessment.

“Whoever agrees to take Kasumi on as a student will have their work cut out for them.” he mutters back to you. “IF she passes tomorrow’s test.”

You stare back at the ninja, who’s stern expression finally starts to crumble with a sigh.

“Kasumi also fought well, and her determination is admirable. All members of the Kaguya clan seem to share that in common too. Perhaps, with a little discipline, Miss Kaguya can indeed become a—“ the ninja stops in his tracks, his eye visibly widening. “…”

“Huh?” You look back at him as he stares down the empty hallway. “Sir? What’s wrong?”

“ACK!” the ninja shouts, raising a hand up to his right temple.

To your shock, you watch as veins suddenly pulse beneath the skin around his right eyepatch.

“Argh, its nothing.” the ninja looks away from you, covering the bulging veins. “I apologize Miss Uesugi. i-I’m afraid I only recently lost this eye, the pain still comes and goes…”

You’re not very well-versed in medicine, but what is happening to his injured eye seems very strange. Perhaps it is a phantom pain?

The ninja sighs, wiping a bead of sweat off his brow as the veins disappear.

“I apologize.” he mutters while looking further down the hall. “Come, your classmates should be finishing up their sparring sessions about now. You won’t want to miss what he has to say on tomorrow’s test.”

Standing just outside the Pool Chamber, you can faintly hear Sensei Katsuyori’s voice. It sounds as if he is addressing your classmates.

“Hm, seems I was right. You better head inside. Oh, I don’t believe I introduced myself.” the ninja bows his head to you. “My name is Ao, perhaps we will meet again Miss Uesugi.”

You bow in reply and the two of you go your separate ways, Ao heading back upstairs to the balcony while you walk onto the ground floor. Most of your classmates look a little tired and sweaty, some sporting bandages on their arms or legs. Sensei stands in front of them all, his voice booming.

“Tomorrow you will all meet in the rice fields to the northeast of Kirigakure.” He produces a scroll and unfurls it for the entire class to see, showing them a map of the land and sea surrounding the village. “All of you will assemble in front of Benkei Bridge at noon. Once our lord Mizukage gives the order, you shall be escorted across the bridge. You will have a short amount of time to collect your bearings and then a barrage of fireworks shall explode in the sky to signify the beginning of the test!”

You stare at the map closely until you find Benkei Bridge. It doesn’t appear to be terribly far from your home, closer than the Academy at least.

“Now listen up! The Final Test is nothing more than all-out battle.” Sensei glares as the scroll rolls itself back into place. “Once the test begins, it will not end until all of you either pass or die! You WILL Kill!”

Your classmates steal a few looks at each other, horror plainly etched on some of their faces. One or two however give each other glares meaner even than Sensei’s. It seems a few of them have scores to settle.

“You will be graded solely on how many of your classmates you will be able to slay. Kill one, and you will pass. After that, all you really need do is survive until a test proctor comes to collect you. Unless you decide to continue fighting, in which case you WILL be recognized for your efforts!"

“I hear the Hunter-nin are going to be there tomorrow to watch.” one of your classmates whispers to another.
“How many do you think we’ll have to kill to get the Seven Swordsmen to notice us?” Another classmate whispers.

“Enough!” Sensei shouts, quieting down your classmates’ chatter. “That is all I have to say on the matter. War is a simple affair, KILL or be KILLED!”

Sensei marches towards you all as his voice falls to something lower than a yell for once.
“Now go home and rest. You are all dismissed.”

Several of your classmates begin to follow your sensei out of the chamber while a few others break off into groups. You spot three or four of them talking amongst each other, likely forming plans for tomorrow. Suddenly, you remember that your errant friend Junko is still off playing hooky. You’re fairly sure she will be able to figure out where and when the test is scheduled, as she was quite confident in skipping today’s session. Still, perhaps it would be worthwhile to speak with her before the test. Out of everyone in your class, you feel that she would be the most trustworthy to fight beside. Sensei spoke nothing about forming teams, so you can only assume it will not be frowned upon.

The thought of you and her being forced to fight one another does come to mind, a prospect that honestly unnerves you.

You know Sensei told you all to head home and rest, but you just can’t leave town without speaking to Junko. Moving past your former classmates, you leave the academy and hit the streets.

The sun is starting to set, long shadows being cast throughout the area and leaving you walking in shade. There are quite a few puddles here and there, although the storm seems to have cleared up. It doesn’t take you long to find Junko’s neighborhood, or her turf as she jokingly calls it. Peeking your head through a few alleys, and finding more than a few homeless folk and shady youths, you eventually opt to walk into a small diner you’ve known her to frequent.

Looking inside, you instantly spot Junko in the back of the place. She seems entirely focused on a pinball machine, giving it a few slight jolts as she mashes on the bumper buttons.

“Hey, Big Sis!” you cry out to her, earning a few looks from the random youths sitting around eating and drinking.

“Eh?!” Junko looks over her shoulder, revealing the fierce visage of her oni mask. “Lil Sis! Wassup!?”

The pinball machine groans, multiple lights flashing and beeping as the machine mocks Junko. She turns back to the machine and gives it a kick, using the momentum to push off of it and walk towards you.

“How was school? Sensei throw another shitfit for old time’s sake?” She chuckles as the two of you fist bump each other.

“He was surprisingly laidback. No pushups or ‘where’s Lazy Junko?’ today.” you say with the toughest glare you can manage in imitation of Sensei.

“I think I’ll miss seeing his daily heart attacks.” Junko shrugs. “Or not. So, what’s up?”

You briefly inform her on what went on today at the Academy, glossing over your fight with Kasumi and getting right to Sensei’s talk of the Final Test. Junko folds her arms over her chest and leans closer when you start to explain the Battle Royale that is to take place.

“Damn, its gonna be a massacre.” Junko sighs, taking a seat at a nearby table whilst lowering her mask. “Oh well, we all knew this was coming one day. Half-expected someone to try to kill us a lot earlier to be honest. So got any bright ideas?”

You take a seat opposite her while she lights herself a cigarette. You know your limits well. Few of your classmates can match you blade for blade, but you’re not sure how many of them you could take all at once. Not to mention some of them had powerful Ninjutsu, beyond anything you’ve learned. Junko herself was fairly quick and quiet, a fairly accomplished adherent to the art of Soundless Murder and less of a frontline combatant. Knowing that, you suggest...

You rack your thoughts for ideas, leaning onto the table and ruminating on what’s to come while Junko enjoys her cigarette. She’s right about one thing, it is going to be a massacre out there. You have a feeling that many of your classmates are going to get right into the thick of things as soon as the fireworks go off. However, some are likely to run off as well, and once the initial battle peters out there’s likely to be a handful of students leaving that scuffle with injuries. Easy pickings.

“We’ll scatter as soon as they cut us loose,” you mutter. “and then we’ll pick them off one by one. I know that area a little bit, there should be plenty of places where we can hide. I’m sure we can ambush some of them, maybe if we’re lucky we’ll even catch one or two that are tired or injured.”

Junko exhales a puff of smoke and smiles at you.

“I like the sound of that. Screw fighting fair, we are supposed to be NINJA after all.” she taps some of the ash from her cigarette into an ashtray on the table. “I bet you good money that some of our classmates are going to go hog wild as soon as those fireworks go off. Heh, fireworks… almost sounds like a party.”

Junko grins at you, but her smile doesn’t last long. You want to be able to laugh along with her, but the grimness of the situation is getting to you a little.

“Well I do have something for us.” Junko reaches into her letterman jacket and pulls a small vial out of her pocket and puts it on the table. “Had to call in a favor, but I managed to get this real cheap off the black market.”

“What’s that supposed to be?” you ask as you grab the vial. “Drugs?”

“Poison, extracted from a Fugu fish.” Junko whispers while leaning closer. "That crap’s twelve-hundred times more lethal than cyanide! I could only get us a little though, enough to coat a few of our Kunai… or one of our swords. Er, YOUR sword would probably be best.”

You’ve heard of this stuff before. Fugu fish are considered a delicacy by the nobility here in the Land of Water and a curse by its fishermen. Ingesting this stuff can kill someone in less than an hour if the stories you heard are true, and you can only assume that anyone who got this into their bloodstream would die much much quicker. Extremely deadly, and useful for girls like you and Junko.

“What do you think lil sis, not bad eh? What do you wanna do with it?”

If we're in position to use the kunai, we won't really need the posion. But if it's on our sword, we can rely on it as an ace up our sleeve if someone forces us into a straight fight.

“Hmm,” You shake the vial a little before looking back up at Junko. “I think it’d be best if we use this to coat my katana. It’ll be the ace up our sleeves in case our backs are up against a wall and we have to fight fair.”

“Ohhh, I see!” Junko jabs a finger at you. “Save all the poison for yourself huh, after all the work I did! Freeloader!”

The two of you break out into laughter as you pocket the poison away into your leather jacket.

“Who’d you sleep with to get it? Was he really that ugly?” you tease.

“Screw you!” Junko chortles.

It looked like Junko agreed with your choice. You felt your spirits rising now that you had a battle plain in mind and a little help from your friend. You’re feeling pretty happy that you chose to swing by her neighborhood.

>97
>Near-Crit Perception Success

You cease your laughter a few solid seconds before Junko does, spotting a clearly familiar face across the room. Looking away immediately, so as to not alert them, you instead turn your gaze to a conveniently placed mirror on the wall to confirm your suspicion.

“Ugh,” you groan as you stare at the reflection of three teenage thugs. “you’re kidding me.”

There can be mistake, those three are part of the same group that tried to mug you this morning sans the one you subdued by slicing off his fingers. They shoot you a few dirty looks while grumbling to one another, and by staring long carefully enough you are able to lip-read a few words like 'payback'... or was that, 'backup'?

“Yo, lil sis.” Junko whispers. “What’s up with you?”

One of the thugs stands up out of his seat and begins to slowly walk toward the exit

“You see those guys sitting over there?” you place a hand on the handle of your blade. “I had to cut up a friend of theirs this morning when they tried to jump me.”

Junko frowns while her cigarette hangs out of her mouth. Mirroring you, she reaches behind her jacket and grips the handle of the ninjato sword strapped to her back.

“Small world.” she plucks the cigarette out of her mouth and stamps it out before affixing her mask. “Too bad for them.”

The two of you stare at one another, the tension so thick in the air that you feel like either of you could cut it with a blade. Stealing another glance across the room, the two thugs appear to be scowling at one another with anger burning in their eyes.

While the four of you sit and stew in your anger, a random diner patron gets up from his seat. Walking past the two thugs and then past you and Junko, the clueless kid puts a coin inside a jukebox.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZq3i94mSsQ

You and Junko get up, knocking your table to the floor, just as the two thugs also get up.

“Hey assholes!?” Junko growls while whipping out her shortsword. “You got something to say?!"

One of the thugs grabs a large Sake bottle off of a table and smashes it against a counter as his friend pulls a bamboo stick out of his kimono robe, revealing a sword hidden inside as the two of them step up.

"No one screws with the Tiger Shark gang and gets away with it!" the thug with the sword grunts.

“Bring it on you!” the thug with the broken bottle shouts.

You stare down the two thugs and patiently await their attack with your sword at the ready. Junko leers at them, holding her own sword up while waving them to come closer. The thug with the sword charges you while his partner with the sake bottle goes after Junko.

>76
>Success!

The thug stands well over a foot taller than you, and the scars on his body hint at experience in swordfighting. And yet, you can’t help but see each of his attacks coming as if they were in slow motion. You block an overhead sword strike with ease, and you’re surprised when he attempts another one immediately after as if he expected a different result. Taking a step back, you dodge a horizontal slash of his blade which ends up smashing a few bottles on the counter.

“Hold still you little brat!” he roars, stepping closer while wildly waving his blade.

Compared to your duel earlier with Kasumi, this man is nothing. You dodge his next few strikes with nothing more than careful footwork and effortless blocks. When he attempts his next downward slash, you parry back the blade and then drive the pommel of your sword into his face!

“ARGH!” he cries, dropping his sword and falling flat onto the floor.

A gasp draws your attention to Junko, who stands tall over her foe while he lays sprawled on the ground as well. While your foe grabs his broken nose, Junko’s looks to be grasping his crotch.

“Ha!” she gives you a thumbs up. “Tiger Sharks my ass.”

You smile, giving her a thumbs up back. However, your smile disappears when you see two more thugs rush through the entrance curtains.

“Look out!” you shout.

Junko twists around in the nick of time, raising her sword and blocking a strike from a thug’s machete. You’re about to rush over to assist Junko in fighting these two when another three enter the diner including the thug that left earlier. Evidently having left to get backup, you glare this thug as he raises a hatchet.

“There’s the bitch," he grunts. "Get her!”

What will Myon do now?

You’re outnumbered now, and your foes are closing in. Not wanting to draw this fight out any longer and risk either you or Junko getting hurt, you rush over to meet their charge with one of the most powerful Kenjutsu techniques you know.

>67
>Success!

You leap upwards well above their heads and almost high enough to scrape the ceiling, and fly through the air across the restaurant towards these three foes. With your sword held high, you fall towards the thug with the hatchet and put your entire bodyweight into one single swordstroke.

"DRAGON-HAMMER-FLASH-JUTSU!"

Your sword cleaves directly through his collarbone, spraying a bloody mist into your face as you carve deep into his torso.

“Holy shit!” One of the thugs beside him cries. Your foe has no time to so much as scream, his knees hit the floor and his body crumbles in a gruesome pile of flesh.

Everything seems to slow down as you step back into a readied stance. Your slain foe’s blood has stained your leather jacket in addition to spraying the clothes of his two companions who stare at you slackjawed. You feel your heart beating rapidly in your chest as you prepare for them to—

“RUN!” one of the thug’s shouts. “AIIEEEEEEE!!!”

You watch the two remaining thugs in front of you as they sprint away out of the diner. A loud grunt draws your attention to Junko as she sinks her own sword in-between a different thug’s ribcage before shoving her foe to the ground. The other remaining foe she faces swears under his breath before running off with the two retreating thugs.

“y-Yeah. YEAH you better run!” Junko huffs and puffs, trying to catch her breathe. “Freaking… punks”

“Junko?” you call to her, your voice just barely above a whisper.

“Yeah lil sis?” she turns to you, her eyes widening as she stares at hatchet-man that you’ve cut in twain. “DAMN!”

You can still feel your heart beating as you suddenly realize just what you’ve done. You’ve executed the Dragon Hammer Flash technique successfully, but not on a dummy. For the first time in you’re life, you have killed someone.

>Great Success!

You stare down at the carnage you have made, taking it all in at once. It feels immensely overwhelming for a brief moment, how you’ve been able to reduce a man to this. Yet, after you’ve taken a few steady breaths, you’re able to lift your gaze away from the corpse.

“Lil Sis?” Junko asks while walking toward you over some debris on the floor. “Are you OK?”

“Yes,” you exhale a breathe you didn’t realize you were holding in and wick the blood off of your blade. “yes I’ll be fine. We should go.”

“Right!” Junko reaches into her letterman jacket and pulls out her wallet. “Sorry about the mess!”

You watch your companion slap a bunch of money onto the counter before promptly following her out the entrance, stepping around the dead bodies without paying them another look. You’re only faintly aware of the next minute or so as you and Junko put some distance between yourselves and the diner. It is late in the evening now as the two of you come to a stop near the outskirts of the village.

“You gonna be alright Myon? Here have a cigarette.” she raises a box of cigarettes to your face.

“Get that stinkin' shit out of my face.” you chuckle, pushing her hand away.

“Heh, yup you're alright.” she says, putting the box away. "Hey, this’ll just make you twice as deadly for tomorrow. Now that you’re used to it.”

“y-Yeah.” you say while shaking your head. “I guess you too now, after stabbing that one guy.”

“Yeah,” Junko’s chuckling fades while she lowers her mask and fixes herself a cigarette. “I’ve already killed before.”

“o-Oh.” you stare at her as she turns away and starts walking back into the village.

“Good night lil sis.” she says while wandering back inside the village.

“Good night big sis.” you call back to her while turning away from the village and beginning your trek back home.

Kirigakure's focus on Kenjutsu was a big reason why I picked it as the setting in the first place. I'm glad you guys are enjoying it as well!

I'm planning on giving you guys some opportunities to pick up new Jutsu and/or refining some of the abilities you already know. I wasn't planning on Elemental Focus Myon this soon, but you guys push for it then Myon might learn her Focus earlier than I expected. Its still up in the air exactly what her Focus is right now.

For reference, here's what Myon's character sheet looks like at the moment. Her having focused more on Kenjutsu allowed her to start off knowing more advanced sword fighting techniques than most of her classmates, and her skill definitely shows when going up against your typical bandit or street thug as we've already seen. I've also added the Fugu Fish poison to Myon's list of equipment.

Personally I'm in no hurry to get our Elemental Focus, but it might save us a bit of headache later down the line if we trim down our choices.

For example, Earth nature. I admit I'm not too familiar with it, but what I do remember makes me think that Earth doesn't really compliment swordfighting too well.

Coming home later in the evening fortunately meant you didn’t have to explain why you were covered in blood to your mother, who had already fallen asleep. Quietly sneaking inside your house without waking her was an easy task, after which you devoured the cold dinner she had put aside and promptly washed the blood from your face. Trudging into your room, you hung up your leather jacket and carefully placed your sword back into its stand before falling face-first onto your futon. The familiar sound of the waves gently lapping against the beach outside and the scent of sea-salt on the breeze brings a small smile to your face as you drift off to sleep…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gui89MjQ2ho

Your eyes flutter open to the sound of birds chirping outside. Sunlight shines dimly into your bedroom as you lift your head and stifle a yawn. The day has finally come.

“Today I become Shinobi.” you mutter under your breathe, your hands tightening into fists. “I will."

Sighing, you lower your head back onto your futon while wondering if you couldn’t catch anymore sleep in preparation for the battles ahead. Any hope of that ends immediately when suddenly, a shrill crash pierces your ears followed by a scream!

“Mother?!” you cry, panic seizing you as you spring to your feet and grab your sword. That sounded like it came from the kitchen. “MOM! What’s wrong?!”

Panic seizes you when no reply comes. You briefly consider the possibility that those Tiger Shark thugs followed you home, or that your test has somehow already begun. Gritting your teeth, you wrench open your bedroom door and sprint down the hall to the kitchen with sword in hand. Nothing could have prepared you for what you saw!

“m-Mom?!” your jaw drops as you lower your sword. “Dad?"

Standing in the kitchen, holding your mother closely in his arms, is a tall figure in a sleeveless white tunic trimmed with gold. While much of his face remains veiled behind a black cloth and his Kirigakure Headband, there’s no mistaking the fierceness of his eyes or the deepness of his voice as he speaks.

“I am happy to see you too.” he says while placing a hand on your mother's cheek. “I’ve missed you."

“o-Oh, the tea.” Your mother stutters while glancing down at the shattered teapot on the floor. “So clumsy, I’ll—“

“I’ll buy you a new one, it is nothing.” your father flatly states while your mother swoons in his grasp. “I brought home a lot of money for you and— Myon?”

Your father gently lets your mother stand on her own two feet as he looks over and realizes you are standing before him.

“Daughter, you’ve grown.” he says while looking you up and down. “And you’re still using that sword I commissioned for you. I hope it has served you well.”

You wordlessly stare up at your father, the sheer absurdity of his appearance taking you off guard. Your father coming home, now of all times? Just seeing him standing here in your kitchen looked out-of-place, as if you were caught up in some poorly rendered Genjutsu.

“Daughter?” your father furrowed his brow, walking up to you. “Are you feeling well?”

Father dropped down to a knee and placed his hand on your forehead.

“Hmmm," your father hums. "now would be a most inauspicious time to fall ill.”

“Ugh,” you gnash your sharklike teeth while glaring at your father. “…UGH!"

Your fist crashes into father’s face, knocking him away as you hold back a scream.

“ARGH!” your father falls flat on his ass, rubbing his veiled cheek. “Myon, what’s come over—OOF!”

“YOU OAF!” you toss another fist into his gut, knocking the wind right out of him. “Where have you been all this time?!”

“Myon, compose yourself!” your father commands, shuffling back across the floor.

“WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!” you shout once more, your voice cracking as you demand an answer.

“You know I can’t tell you that.” your father groans while you back him into a wall. “Were I to reveal the details of my mission, it would only make you a target for—“

You cut your father’s lecture short by stabbing your sword into the wooden wall mere inches from his head.

“You bastard! You won’t even tell us WHY?!” you huff and puff at your father through sharp fangs, your disheveled hair only lightly obscuring the rage on your face. “I can’t believe you!”

Your disbelief has ended, there can really be no mistake now. Only your father could get your temper to flare quite like this.

“Awwww~” your mother coos, cupping her hands together beside her face. “It feels so good to have the family together again!"

The initial outrage of you coming face to face with father slowly gives way to a tense silence, leaving the two of you to stare one another down from across the breakfast table. Meanwhile, your mother hums a cheerful tune while preparing breakfast and your brother rattles a toy in his crib.

“Espionage.” your father grunts.

“Excuse me?” you sneer back.

“I was tasked with spying on rival villages.” Your father stands up from his table and walks over to your brother’s crib. “Other Hidden Villages likely have eyes and ears here in Kirigakure as well. That’s why I didn’t want to put the family in danger by contacting home."

You give your father a stern look as he reaches his hands into the crib and picks up your baby brother. You could understand the logic behind his reasoning, but his answer still didn’t satisfy you.

“Fine.” you spit back. “So why are you home now?”

Your father does not immediately give you an answer, instead opting to sit back down with your brother and poke a finger at his belly.

“For you.” Your father mutters, earning a giggle from your brother with a careful poke “I wanted to be home for you, at least for today of all days."

You blink at your father, your gaze slowly drifting to the floor. You had been so caught up by his sudden arrival that you had nearly forgotten the final test! Remembering it now had something of a sobering effect on your foul mood.

Sighing, you realize you had only a short amount of time left before you had to leave. Your father, as insufferable as he could be, was here now… perhaps it would be worthwhile to speak with him instead of giving him the silent treatment? He was an accomplished ninja after all… and he was still your father.

What will Myon talk to her father about over breakfast?
>Ask for advice on how to survive the Final Test?
>Press him for more details on his Espionage missions?
>Ask if he will be staying home for a while longer after your Final Test?
>Ask if he can teach you any last minute techniques or Jutsus?

Your father, having been a full-fledged ninja since before you were even born, had to know more about this test than you did. If anything, perhaps he could shed some light on how you could make it through this mess.

“Dad?” you murmur while drumming your fingers on the table. “Could you tell me how your Final Test went? How’d you end up passing anyway?”

Your father bounces your brother up and down in his arms until the infant breaks out into laughter. For a moment you think your father might have been smiling underneath his mask, but you get the feeling its gone when he speaks next.

“My trial was different from what you’re about to go through.” your father sighs while letting Keiji rest in his arms. "In many ways, your test is supposed to… emulate mine.”

“Huh,” you mutter. “What do you mean?”

“Well, I suppose you could say this.” your father hums. “Experience was my greatest sensei. As soon as I had some idea of how to swing a blade about, I was thrown onto a battlefield and told to attack the enemy with everything I had. I survived my first battle, and was awarded this band on my head. That was over ten years ago, at the beginning of the Second Shinobi World War."

You had heard your father, and at times your mother, talk about the Second Shinobi World War. Apparently the fighting was so bad in some parts of the Land of Water that a few islands had to be completely abandoned. Of course, the academy also taught you that this war claimed the life of the Second Mizukage who had died a hero defending the village’s honor.

“The most important lesson I believe I learned during that war was this: war is all about deception.” your father raises a finger up to you. “Always keep your enemy guessing. Keep your emotions, especially your anger and your fear, hidden like a knife. Show them to your enemy, and you are essentially giving them a blade to kill you with. Keep it hidden, and it can become a powerful weapon to unleash on them.”

Mulling over your father’s words, you briefly consider if perhaps adopting a mask like his or Junko’s might assist in that? It was curious to hear your father talk about using emotions as a weapon, you also wondered what it would be like to feel such intense fear or anger on the battlefield.

“I think I understand.” you nod to your father as your mother joins you both at the table, laying plates of food for both of you. “Do you think there’s anything else you could teach me before the test?”

Your father taps a finger against his chin, before casting a look at your sword.

“It is too late to teach you anything too complicated, but perhaps there is something I might be able to show you…”

A mask like Junkos would be cool, I've be jealous of her mask since day one. Fuck it, we are almost certainly going to be on the same team, it could totally be a thing

After scarfing down a very filling meal made by your mother, you follow your father out onto the grassy cliffside outside your home.

“Give me your sword.” your father asks while raising up his hand.

You hand him your katana, which he immediately draws out of its scabbard.

“No doubt you’ve thrown thousands of shuriken and kunai over the years.” Your father tosses the sword up into the air and catches it with his other hand. “How often have you thrown your sword?”

“Thrown my sword?” you ask, furrowing your brow at him. “Why would I throw away my own weapon?”

“Why would your opponent ever expect you to throw away your own weapon?” Your father replies in a somewhat mocking tone. “Most of them wouldn’t expect something like this."

Your father revs back his hand while gripping your sword, holding it at a horizontal angle before shouting

“FLYING-REVOLVING-SWORD-JUTSU!”

Stepping forward, your father tosses the swordin a movement reminiscent of a horizontal slash, except he lets go of the sword and causes it to twirl about so violently fast that it almost looks like a giant shuriken. Incredibly, the sword flies as far as 15 yards away before smashing through the bark of a tree and embedding itself into the wood.

“Care to give it a try?”

Your father made it look and sound so simple. In essence, the technique boils down to simply throwing your weapon at your foe. Grabbing onto your sword handle, you shove your foot against the bark and pull it free.

“OK… spread my feet apart like this, keep my back straight, and…”

>Minor Success

You toss the blade forward and almost immediately let out a cheer as the blade twirls incredibly fast in a circular motion, just like how your father threw it. Your celebrating is cut short however, as the blade ceases to fly and clatters onto the grass. You weren’t able to make it fly even half as far as your father did. Picking up the blade, you attempt the same maneuver again but fail to toss it any further.

“Hmph, no. That’s not right.” Your father grunts, walking up to you and placing a hand on your shoulder. “You have to really put your back into the swing, like this.”

Your father goes slowly through the motions for you to watch, giving you a little bit more to go off of as you continue to practice. The two of you spend about half an hour throwing your sword about. Eventually, you’re able to reliably toss the sword a little over 5 yards. The distance your sword-throw can cover really isn’t that impressive compared to your father, but you imagine you can catch someone by surprise with this jutsu.

“But be very careful. With this attack, you’ll be risking your primary weapon. It would be foolhardy to use this in anything other than a one-on-one fight, and even then…”

“I understand.” You nod your head while sheathing your sword. “I’ll be careful.”

Your father stares down at you without saying another word, those fierce eyes looking directly into your own. You have half-a-mind to ask him what exactly is going through his head as he looks you over, but you don’t get that chance. A moment later, he begins to walk toward the house.

“You should get ready. Its almost time.”

Looking up at the sun in the sky, you can see that midday is rapidly approaching. The Final Test is at hand.

Thanks for running, I look forward to the next session

I wont be voting to throw our weapon, that's retarded

And that's all for tonight! I've added Flying Revolving Sword technique to Myon's character sheet. She's not quite as skilled in it as she could be, but if she ever gets an opportunity to seriously practice it she could become much deadlier with that Jutsu. The same can be said for several of her jutsus.

As always, thanks for playing!

I've never archived a quest before, I'll have to try to figure it out some time tonight or tomorrow.

As for next time, I believe I will try to start a new thread during a day I can get off from work so we can start earlier and have more anons involved. That way we can have a bigger crowd for when Myon and Junko go Pumped up Kicks fight their classmates.
