You sleep was dreamless, and as you get up, you’re surprisingly fresh, you feel. You’re up before Lysan, though, which is probably good, considering all of yesterday. Now, it’s back to business, and back to getting this kid through his tests.

Although how you’re going to help on something called the ‘Test of Mind’, you honestly have no clue.

--------------------------------------------
Greetings, unusual summons, and welcome back to Magical Girl For Hire Quest! Currently, you're on a mission as a kid's summons to help him pass his final exam so that he can become a full summoner. You're currently known as Kyria, a triple eyed, fairy-like summon constantly expounding magical energy, and after spending a very curious day out at the circus on his day off (with you getting some interesting objects as a result) you find yourself in the position of waiting for your client to awaken.

It’s nothing major- simply seems like you’ve awoken an hour or so before his usual time. Meaning that you’ve got a bit of spare time to do as you like. The sun is just cresting over the horizon, from the looks of things. You could take this time to do a bit of study yourself, or maybe take a look around the campus, see if anyone has news to share. Or get the both of you up early, maybe get Lysan into the habit of morning warmups.

Let him rest a little bit. Besides if we are going to be doing a test of mind maybe we can get something from the summoning book we got as well as the one that talks about the summons world.

He needs to get in the habit of doing things under his own power, seeing as he isn’t able to afford our services on a permanent basis. Besides, even if you just decide to study, it would probably be more beneficial if he was awake to teach us anyway so we wouldn’t fail the brains test.

More of the quest. Problem is, I don't want to pay you to put your other hobbies and free time on hold to please me and a couple of others. I would never let anyone aside from my boss use money to tell me what to do, in my spare time no less.
Like, how much patreon bux do you need to decide it's worth shuffling around your schedule or saying no to your friends because strangers pay you to entertain them? I don't know you or how motivated you are by money but once it enters the equation, so does stress. It's real easy to burn out our give up because you feel like you're not receiving enough for what you do.
Oh and for everyone's sake, please don't answer these questions.

I guess that makes it some kind of ethical issue for me? I could spot you a few dollars in a tip jar but setting up a monthly payment? Nah. That gives me the right to expect certain things from you, in time, quantity and quality and suddenly we're having a business exchange and not simply playing a game together. That's a disaster waiting to happen.

I think it's similar to the paid GM debates you see on the virtual tabletop forums, and that's one hot potato

Here from thread 58:

>Sifting through the pile even more, you come across another book, this one old as well, but with a half-inch thick leatherbound cover who’s title catches your interest, although you can tell it’s in a different language: ‘To Rend the Beyond.’ This one is...you’re not sure, but the preface seems to indicate that it’s about using the raw energies of the dimensional plane that summons come from, explaining how summons come to be, and how both they and that energy can be controlled.

There was also this:
>Something’s bugging you about it, though...as you turn the book end over end, you can’t help but squint...it feels like something might be inside of it- if only because it feels like the back cover might be heavier than the front. You’re not certain, but…

>>3025555
>>3025561
>>3025563
>>3025572
You decide that going back to To Rend the Beyond would probably be the most beneficial for you in the long run. The information on just what it takes to summon a creature and how to manipulate it...you don’t think it’ll be incredibly useful, but you never know where insight might come from. If nothing else, it might prove to be just what’s needed for the test.

There’s a lot to go over here, however. The basics state that the plane is that the dimensional plane where summons come from is a nexus of raw mana call The Stream, so named because it is theorized to be a continually moving source- you’re reminded of the leyline style of magic sources that you often come across, only instead of smaller streams, it seems like this might just be one big river that constantly changes shape and direction.

Summons themselves are essentially souls that have found their way to the Stream, and tend to retain facets of their past personality, but only the strongest retain their memories of who they were before they became summons. The idea disturbs you a bit, you won’t lie, but...you guess you can deal with it.

Summons are basically done by the summoner casting a minute portion of themselves into the Stream, and waiting for a summon to be interested by it. Kind of like using bait to attract a fish, you think. It’s why some summons can be belligerent- there’s nothing technically forcing their obedience; rather it’s simply that most relish the chance to be in the real world again. It’s also why it’s uncommon for people to summon the same summon twice in a row. For that, you’d need both something that the specific summon is interested in, and a way to attempt to notify that soul directly- which is relatively unique for every single summon. Summons made in this way are called ‘Binding Summons’; since they are attracted by something they desire innately, the summon is ‘bound’ to the summoner, the remaining core of their being willing to do anything until they can have the thing- which is often never.

Hmm…wonder what else you can find out.

Might as well take a look into just what these Bonds were. You had a vague idea, but they seemed to be important, nonetheless, and different from Binding. As you flip across the pages, you get an inkling of an idea. If you look at it a certain way, this all kind of makes you wonder if you could do something vaguely similar to Lorelei’s clone thing or Izumi’s weapon shaping...only maybe with calling other people. Something like a temporary summon, perhaps? What’s the term...puppets? Not sure. Well, it’s an idea, nothing major. Maybe you’ll talk about it more later.

Aha, there, Bonds. Seems like Bonds are essentially the link between Summons and Summoners, and the strength of the bond is essentially how much mana that the Summoner can feed the Summon consistently. They need this flow to perform most of their skills, it seems, and is usually invisible to the naked eye. However, it can be measured, and seen if the bond is strong enough. Bonds require the summoner and summon to be mentally and emotionally synchronized to a degree; they say the reasons are ‘currently unknown’ in the book, but the more they understand each other, the stronger the Summon is. So friendly summons and summoners will have a stronger bond and can thus access more of their power than summons that are frosty to each other. Bonds also serve a more tactile purpose as they can allow a summoner to know just how damaged their summon is, and other functions mentally.

Huh. Wonder what that would make you.

As you continue reading about the various levels of Bonds and how they work (and how the higher level bonds- which are stated to be ‘only that which a relationship like a dedicated lover can reach’) you hear a groaning from the bed. Seems like Lysan is up. You flip the book closed, hearing a subtle rattle. Oh yeah! There WAS something in the back, wasn’t there? You check the back cover at Lysan swings his feet over, and poke a small hole where you’re sure the sound comes from. Inside...is a strange ring. A gold band, with an inlaid gem. Red, with a stripe of yellow running down the center of it- a variant of cat’s eye, if you recall the term right. You touch it, and interestingly enough you can see the thing glow subtly as soon as you do...you think something might’ve fluctuated, but you’re genuinely unsure. Other than that, however, nothing happens.

“Huh? Whatcha lookin’ at?” Lysan asks sleepily, still rubbing out his eyes.

>”Just catching up on some reading.” Pocket the ring. It’s technically your book, so the ring is yours, too.
>”Well, a couple of things, but at the moment, this.” Show him the ring. It couldn’t hurt...hopefully.

You shake your head. “Just catching up on some reading.” As you subtly pocket the ring and close the book, you move to casually get up. No reason to make him suspect anything’s off. It’s yours, he doesn’t need to worry about it. You’ll give it a scan in a bit. “Had a good night?”

He nods. “Yeah, sleep helped a lot. I just hope the test won’t be too bad, but...I think I can handle it. Whatever it is.” He grumbles out the last part, and you can frankly understand why. Not knowing what exactly the tests will be on gets rather old rather fast. “You ready for the day?”

“As ever,” you announce, and he nods, headed to freshen up. As you do, you’re quick to scan the little ring.

>Created: Estimated 250 Years (Local) Ago
>Apparent Function: Mana Construct Container. Readings indicate current object holds mana construct entity. Release method unknown.

...what. Your heartbeat quickens as you read the simple and clear wording. There’s something IN there? What...who?

Before you can gawk too much, the door opens, and steam billows out as Lysan dries off his hair. You’re quick to put both the ring and the FutureSight away before he turns to you properly. “Alright...let’s do this!”

Yeah, here’s hoping.

It doesn’t take you very long to get to the usual place- by now everyone seems to at least be somewhat used to your presence, even if many are still giving you cautious stares. Ms. Tandal is there as usual, and this time you can see a very small, nearly translucent crow on her shoulder. “Greetings, and I hope you all had a restful day off. Now we resume testing, and today’s will be the Test of Mind. Unlike the Test of Sync, which judged the bonds between Summon and Summoner, the Test of Mind judges the Summoner’s general knowledge of the pact between Summon and Summoner, as well as their logical thinking capabilities, along with the Summon’s capacity to respond to those judgements in a timely and concise manner. Any questions?”

Several hands go up. Hell, you’re tempted to ask yourself.

Miss Tandal blinks once, then sighs. “It is a ‘call and response’ manner of test. A hypothetical will be given, then the summoner and summon shall both answer what they believe is the best option. Occasionally, minor demonstrations may be requested. NOW are there any questions?”

>Any questions?

Fair enough. Writing!

Here goes.
>>
>>3026753

Thinking about it, you’ve got nothing to lose, and to the surprise of many, your hand goes up. “What’s to stop us from just agreeing with a plan and showing how it works?” You ask. “That doesn’t seem like much of a test.”

Miss Tandal looks at you in slight surprise before a small smile of all things shows on her face. “That would be true, were this a simple test for a grade, where there is a collection of correct and incorrect answers. However! This will not be graded, but judged by a collective of experienced individuals, as I would have stated at this point regardless.” She nods in understand of your question as she claps twice. “Take a seat, and as soon as the other judges get here, we’ll begin.”

“HEY! MADE IT!” A familiarly loud voice yells. Aside from Proctor Lucia, you notice that another lady, with long, platinum blond hair down to her knees and a thin, supermodel-esque figure stands next to her, at least a head and a half taller. Two men are right behind her- one tanned, buzzcut, and with a face long scarred by what you think are burns on the right side. His eyes are calm, but flinty, and you can tell he’s seen battle before, interestingly enough- his eyes scan the room, locking onto you for a couple moments, and his neutral expression dips into a frown briefly before restoring itself. His stocky build is sure of itself, and you can see muscular arms that belie the strength that his slight belly seems to mask. The last fellow is a slightly older man, the wrinkles of age just starting to show, but his salt and pepper hair is still full, and he seems jovial at the whole situation, as though he wants to break out into a laugh at any moment. None of them have summons with them at the moment.

“Well, speak of. Class, you should recognize proctor Lucia, but along with them are Instructor Vanita, Namui, and Cordin,” she mentions all the individuals in turn. “They, along with myself, will be the five judges for this Test. We will all ask a single question, so do your best to answer as ably as possible. Now, as I said. The test begins.”

(cont.)
>>
>>3027225
There’s a real undercurrent of nervousness at this point as kids and summons go up- it’s simply 5 adults sitting at a table, while the summoner and the summon sit facing each other. One by one they’re grilled on ‘What would you do if...’ and ‘considering this law, how would you approach this situation?’ type questions. At times, the students are told to get up out the chair, and then ‘If you would, demonstrate for us an example of your actions under the following circumstances…’ That was unique, because then the crow on Tandal’s shoulder would caw, and there would be some sort of minor, glowing illusion that they’d have to interact with.

It seemed like the crow was smarter than it looked, its wings moving in unnatural ways for a normal bird- and you swear it outright CHUCKLED at some of the responses or demonstrations.

It’s as you’re musing over the judges that you finally hear it. “Summoner Lysan and Summon Kyria. Step forth, please.” Lysan takes a deep breath, looking towards you briefly before you both step up, and take your seats.

So far, you’ve noticed a vague pattern with at least some of them. Lucia, the Clarity test proctor, seems to appreciate answers that lean more towards protectionism and heroics. Vanita, the modelesque woman, seems to value simple practicality, but you’ve seen her grimace at some of the more brutal solutions. Namui, the large fellow, seems to appreciate no-nonsense behavior as well, but also planning and by the book tactics. Cordin, the older man, seems to value unorthodox tactics, however, and occasionally laughs at some of the bolder thoughts put forth.
Tandal is a stone face the entire time- you THINK you’ve caught her mouth twitching a few times in regards to any plan that seems timid, but you’re honestly unsure. Regardless, they always seem to take only a few seconds to deliberate quietly after all the answers have been given, Tandal giving a final ‘Acceptable’ or ‘Unacceptable’ along with a quick review why before sending them on their way. There were eleven before you went up.

Six of them (Iris included, it seems) were found Acceptable. You think you’ve found the test most people are going to fail at…

(cont. again.)
>>
>>3027231
“I’ll take the first question,” Vanitas says, to approving nods. “Let us presume there was a situation in which an individual is requesting a nearby summoner’s aid- you- due to an altercation which involves a government official. This government official has not admitted to any guilt or wrongdoing, however, he has brought forth his state-granted summon to defend himself. The individual has not physically harmed the official, but he HAS threatened him. However, the summon has physically begun to approach the individual beyond reasonable distance and has stated his intention to incapacitate the individual so as to remove the potential threat. There are no nearby guards. How would you resolve the issue, if you choose to interfere at all?”

Lysan hmms at the question- you have to admit it’s a dicey one. “I suppose what I would do is try to keep them both from hurting each other, really. Try to get Kyria in between the both of them and see if there’s anyone else I can call for help to resolve it? It’s a government official, so it’s illegal to try and restrain them since I’m not authorized, but you said beyond reasonable distance, which means that the aggressor is the summon...so yeah, I’d just try to keep things in a holding pattern.”

Blinking once, Vantia turns to you. “And you, Kyria? How would you interpret those orders, or would you suggest an alternative course of action?”

>Given the scenario above, how would you choose to resolve the issue?
>>
Aaand I'm done for tonight. I might be able to do singular updates this week since it's going to be a suite of five questions.

>>
So.... we need to sound heroic, and practical, with a little bit of chaos....ok.
>I'd get in the middle of the summon's path, use my sun flare to confuse both parties and then use my Light traps to hold them until we could know what is going on.

>>
>>3027235
Seems reasonable so far. Wonder if the restraining or damaging restriction extends to the gov't summon?

Could potentially try and bait the gov't summon to focusing on us, then playing keep away while Lysan watches the threatener.
>>
>>3027235
I would prevent the aggressive summon from attacking the individual via one of my talents, preferably a non-lethal, non-physical option. I would then proceed to either move said individual from the situation if Lysan was to suggest or make a motion to leave, or protect them should it be necessary to remain for authorities. I would also make a note to tell said authorities that the official seemed to have issues with controlling his summon, should it be prudent to do so.
>>
>>3027235
I do not know the laws of the summoners so i would abide by Mister Lysan advice. I would however keep a eye on the summon because if the summon is behaving against the will of the summoner it/she must be a regulated summon so the likelyhood of agression would more likely come from it. So since i can't attack the official i would disperse the summon violently a d so stopping any attemp of agression until the guard came since a summon attacking a civilian as far as i know is enough to have that summon dispersed. But i would only do it if any agression would occour

I would interpose myself between the summon and the individual, and use my talents at the creation of barriers to impede the summon's progress towards the individual. At the same time, I would place a spherical barrier around the individual to prevent harm to them as well as to prevent them from being able to harm the official, making any threats that the individual had uttered to be moot, eliminating the threat that the individual poses to the official, and stating as such to the summon in order to attempt to have the summon stand down from it's aggressive defense posture.

Because obeying our summoner is somehow bad?

We have enough power to non-lethally intervene, but it's a legal issue to resolve it so calling the cops is best.

>>3028248
Problem is if the person will way for the cops to arrive. I take that showing we are ready to stop any trouble if the summon start to cause trouble. We can't do nothing about the official, but we sure can drop his summon and have everyone stay down and wait for the police.

But of course only if the summon attacks the person.

You have to think about the situation. Lysan mentioned that you couldn't simply restrain the official fellow- but the summon might be fair game. So in that case...

You find yourself falling back into your usual mercenary habits before you know it. “I would...likely place myself between the summon and the individual, and use my talents at the creation of barriers to impede the summon's progress.”

There’s a couple of surprised looks at you for that one, Lysan included- ah, right. You’d been hiding precisely what you could do for some time. Although, you get the feeling they were expecting something else...regardless, you continue. “At the same time, I would place a spherical barrier around the individual to prevent harm to them, as well as to prevent them from being able to harm the official. This would have the result of making any threats that the individual had uttered to be moot, eliminating the threat that the individual poses to the official; I would be sure to state as such to the summon in order to attempt to have the summon stand down from it's aggressively defensive posture.” There. That sounds like a pretty safe way of handling the situation.

Vantia blinks once, her eyes wide, before nodding. “Very well. Thank you for your answer. Next?”

Cordin snorts, a wry grin on his face. “I’ll go,” he says unceremoniously. “Alright, say you’ve gotten on at a major...hmmm...let’s say you made it into a major guild. Officially recognized and everything. You’re in...let’s say you’re headed for a day out, perhaps catch a game. You’re in the arena, everything’s looking good...and then!” He slaps his hand. “Suddenly, yells, shouting- something’s exploded, caught fire! The guard are there trying to get everyone evacuated, but you spy someone suspicious at the top of the stairs, in the VIP booth. You’re positive they had something to do with it, because they turn and run the second you make eye contact. Whaddya do?”

Lysan grimaces at this one. “Ah...I mean...well, part of me would want to go after him, of course...but I think I’d want to focus more on getting everyone out safely. I think the best option would be to go to the nearest guard, offer our services to them, then tell the guard about what I saw later once everyone was evacuated.”

“Hm. And your take on things, Kyria? Any wisdom to offer, or suggestions?” Cordin asks.

>Response?
>>
>>3029383
Since we are not versed in the guard's evacuation plan, we'd be more of a hindrance than a help in trying to direct traffic flow. Instead, go after the suspect and apprehend them.
>>
>>3029383
“A suspicion is only a suspicion. Following the man in the VIP section on what we assumed isn’t an efficient use of time when there are others who need to be evacuated, exits that need to be cleared and possible victims that need medical attention. After what needs to be done is done, we can then discuss what we saw with authorities.”
>>
>>3029383
Evaluation of the fire followed by containment or extinguishing. As a summon our priority is to keep our summoner safe. Our current skill set is not that good for tracking and the perp already split.
>>
>>3029383
...Fuck, we don't have anything to fight fires or crowd control to move the people away.

>"I'd use my barriers to help shield the people from the fire and to strengthen whatever piece of structure that might harm people. Once everyone is safe, i could help round up all the VIPs for further interrogations at the hands of the appropriated law enforcers."
>>
>>3029383
The noise and chaos are a distraction. The man is obviously using it in attemp to make chaos and reach a high valuable target possuble for assassination. Specialy if he was in a VIP room.

The chaos is a distraction while the guards are busy and moving the civilians the one that caused the chaos will be targeting the VIP.

So i would go after him to stop his true target. After all if he had time to plan everything as you said and he wanted people to get hurt he would have prepared better for the guards response or holded the people hostage.
>>
>>3029400
We have healing. Maybe we could offer it?
>>
>Cordin, the older man, seems to value unorthodox tactics, however, and occasionally laughs at some of the bolder thoughts put forth.

Yeah but summons aren't completely bounded. They have some free will i think.

Well i don't know how to pass this test really.
>>
>>3029428
It really depends on who asks the question. For example, here we can go with the "its an assassin!" plan, but we might risk making a fool out of lychen. Meanwhile going with his plan is the safe answer that might please everyone but Cordin, unless we can get creative with the "saving the people" part.

Lysan got H.I.S., Heroic Impulse Syndrome heroic idiot stupidity and sent us away. Remember the two laws of escort quests.
1. The escortee is an idiot and wrong because they trusted a PC.
2. Never leave the escortee alone they will die to an angry squirrel.
We should have dragged him with us for the lulz.

Well, I think we should bodyguard our summoner, because he's basically a civilian. Lysan is a hostage in waiting.
In this situation the mysterious arsonist/assassin is literally not our problem. So let's just babysit Lysan.

Hm. Thinking about it, you can understand his reluctance to interfere, but as you begin to speak, something occurs to you that makes you hold your words. “Hmmm…”

Cordin leans forward a bit, slight grin and eyes curious. “Yeah?”

“I think…” you start slowly, “...that I would disagree with that course of action.”

Lysan looks surprised, and Cordin and the rest show varying amount of curiosity. It’s Cordin who speaks, however. “Oho? And why’s that?”

“Well, we aren’t versed in the guard's evacuation plan, are we?” you ask retorically. “I think we'd be more of a hindrance than a help in trying to direct traffic flow. My suggestion would be to go after him. Especially since, well…it sounds like a distraction. The attack seems too well-planned.” Your eyes are closed as you imagine the situation. “I’d say that the noise and chaos are a distraction. The man is obviously using it in attempt to cause instability. Why? I’m not sure; I’d say because he wanted to reach a high valuable target- possibly for assassination. Especially if he was in the VIP room.” You nod, feeling a bit more sure of your summations after you audibly sound them out. “I would suggest Lysan and myself pursue the suspect. It also has the benefit of potentially getting my summoner out of the areas with fire, explosives, and crowd panic. I would be able to better keep an eye on him and defend his person if the individuals I had to pay attention to were reduced. Perhaps encase him in a protective sphere if needed.”

Cordin guffaws at that, and even Lucia gives a snicker, although Vanitas seems entirely unimpressed, and Namui visibly frowns. Tandal, of course, reminds entirely impassive.
“Well, then! Alright, sure. That’s it from me.”

“Then allow me,” Namui speaks up. His voice is rough. “Hmmm now...what- ah. Alright.” His voice raises a bit as you both pay attention.

“There’s been a situation. Let’s say you have been sent out to investigate a valuable trading caravan that should’ve made it to the city by now. You find much of the caravan sinking in a nearby swamp, and no individuals remain. You can tell they were beset by thieves, as you can clearly see that a number of the villains even now are making away with many of the valuable goods that would’ve gone to the people."

He leans forward, as though trying to menace you both. “Tell me, what would be your decision on how to handle the situation?”

Deja vu...with some slight differences.

Lysan grimaces, but his face is resolute. "I...I'm not sure. I think I'd want to pursue the thieves, 'cause Kyria's strong...but then again, there might be some stuff left in the caravan that'd sink if we didn't get it...I think we'd go after the thieves, though. We've got the right to arrest if they're criminals, after all, and I trust Kyria to keep me safe. We arrest the thieves and recover what we can."

He nods. "Mm. And Kyria, then?"

>How would you elect to solve the issue?
>>
>>3031425
Agreed with Lysan on capturing the thieves, since there are more than one way to recover the caravan even if it sinks a bit.
>>
>>3031425
>Namui, the large fellow, seems to appreciate no-nonsense behavior as well, but also planning and by the book tactics.

So... By the book tactics.....
>I'd also go for the thieves. The goods in the swamp can be recovered later on if they are metals and the like, and compared to what the thieves got, its worthless. The thieves are also going slower due to having to haul their ill gotten cargo and thus are easy prey.
>>
>>3031425

>>
>>3031425
> as you can clearly see that a number of the villains even now are making away with many of the valuable goods that would’ve gone to the people."

Wait. We can SEE the thieves?

Haha. Capture the thieves and force them to rescue the sinking goods. Strike at their leaders and take them captive if they try to scatter.

At the very least, if we can capture the leader and drive off the rest then we can still rescue the goods while also disrupting the thieves and we can torture the information about their organization, how they transport store and fence the goods etc

Ultimately itself the choice between saving this Caravan, or saving future Caravans AND lives by destroying the thieves, so I would prioritize capturing the leader above all else.

If we have to make a choice and have to write one or the other off, then it would be better to merely trail the thieves until we find their base or have the opportunity to get reinforcements.

It's not our job to fight them. Information should be enough. But we would if there was sufficient benefit.

No indication of the fragility of the cargo, so we should be able to raise the wagons afterwords. Do mark where they are in your mind though; it would be embarrassing to lose track of them.

>>3031461
This, in short. Also, if they did capture anyone instead of killing them, it'd allows us to rescue them.
>>
If we can put trackers on these stuff so the thieves can't escape and a barrier beneath the caravan so it doesn't get more damaged, wouldn't calling the authorities be the next conservative step? It would reduce the risk to the potential hostages if we coordinate with the police and rescue them with overwhelming firce after they think they've made a clean getaway and relaxed their guard.

Either stay next to the caravan to avoid other thieves of opportunity or follow from afar to make sure you can help the hostages uf something go wrong

Also, is making obvious that Lysan has not the first understanding of just what he summoned a bad thing for the test? Because we're making it obvious he's in over his head here.
>>
Lets try to avoid unnecessary violence. Remember that the guy who asked us this questions prefers serious and by the book answers.

>>3031425
We've been sticking our neck out a little too much with these questions, They're supposed to be judging Lysan's problem solving really in the end, despite him being an dumb escortee. Besides, WE know we could lift the caravan out of the mud and subdue the thieves as long as we could see them, but do we really need to rub everyone else's nose in it?
>>3031795
I sure DON'T want to give them a synopsis of our powers. Sure dropping a red flag or two for the lulz is fine, but once we start telling everyone in the world our certified battlemage skillset we're only making our job harder.
>>3032421
I mean obviously we don't want to sniff everyone; just, you know, the people we interact with for more than 2 seconds. But yes it would be rather bothering on an archive binge, "oh my god they keep sniffing bit characters, they died two posts later anyway".
>>3032429
Rather than keep saying "yes and also..." maybe we should lean back, stiffle an exaggerated yawn and just say "What he said" only chumps play 21 questions when they don't have to.
>>
>>3032469
I'm not real sure why they have the summons as a part of this test, but they do, so they must want some sort of input from us.
>>
>>3032421
It's better to err on the safe side and be too cautious and know how strong everybody around the escort target is than risk them being harmed because some harmless-looking strong person decided to hurt them. The part about sniffing everyone that comes in view was an exaggeration but I would at least sniff everyone attending to or working at the school Lysan is going to and anybody who approaches him or is approached by Lysan.
But that's how I would do it if I were Miranda. I don't want to play the quest like that.
>>
>>3032469
What are you talking about, we've got one single day of fighting and then we're done. We already said that we have non-lethal options and people have seen the machine gun. And what on earth made you think that we're going to tell them exactly what we can do? None of that shit was greentexted
>>
>>3032487
Assumption might be that a summoner won't ever get a familiar that is sensibly worse than his first.

It’s not long to answer this one. “Truthfully, I’d agree with Lysan on this one. I'd also go for the thieves.” You can see a grin come from Lysan as you explain it. “After all, the goods in the swamp can be recovered later on, especially if they’re metals and the like. Compared to what the thieves theoretically got, its worthless, isn’t it? I mean, you mentioned that the goods that we can glimpse on the thieves are noticeably valuable, correct? Either way, they’ll be going slower due to having to haul their ill gotten cargo- easy prey. I don’t doubt we could eliminate the thieves, recover the goods, and perhaps even dredge up the caravan if time permits.”

There’s a bit of silence, but nothing more than a ‘harumph’ from him as he leans back. “Alright, then. Next-”

“That’ll be me!” Lucia pipes up. She’s actually slightly less loud at the moment. “Okay, so, can I say something about your answers?”

“No, Lucia,” Tandal interrupts before you can say anything. “That’s the rule. No inference before the final grading.”

“Yeah, just-!” Another noise from Tandal has her sighing (yet still smiling) and shrugging. “Okay, sure! Anyway, my turn! So, here’s my situation! Might be slightly different!”

“Remember to keep it down, dear,” Tandal says with little heat in her voice.

“Right! So!” She takes a deep breath. “Let’s say there was this really manipulative man who conned a young woman out of her money thanks to their summon, who remained hidden. You know they were conned since you witnessed him unknowingly reveal the summon and the con to you, but no one else noticed. What would you do?”

Huh. That one’s a bit more open ended.

Lysan has to think on this one a bit longer than others. “I would...I mean, I think the best option would be to report it, though I might be biased...but I dunno if there would be any proof. Maybe I’d just try to catch up to the woman and tell her, or maybe treat her to something as a consolation prize?” Interesting. You’d have thought he’d have gone after the conman after what he’s said so far.

Lucia tilts her head a bit. “Yeah? And the other half says…?”

Hmm…

>What DO you say?
>>
>>3033439
Nothing. Not our business.

Fuck it.
>>
>>3033439
>>3033453
pretty much this. I mean of course we'll do what Lysan tells us to do, but other than that it's not really our problem. Our job is to protect Lysan and follow his orders, not get him into more danger without a need for it. Realistically we'll probably tell the police about it and move on.
>>
>>3033439
*Yaw* I agree with MY summoner. The girl was obviously missleaded.
But without hard evidence there is nothing we can do about it. He is after all just a a poor student, a little sprawling.

Unlike the other mentioned scenarios, we don't have the authority or are know enough to have a impact in said action.

So i would keep close to him so the girl won't snap and try something. Protecting him from whatever danger it might happen.
>>
>>3033461
Basicaly yeah. Besides she failed to put us in any position in power like the other two did. In this scenario we would be just a Summon and a summoner student. We will pritect him but doing more then that seems counterintuitive.

>>3033439
>Lucia, the Clarity test proctor, seems to appreciate answers that lean more towards protectionism and heroics.

>>3033461
>>3033464
Technically it is our business because the answer we give directly correlates to him passing the test and therefore us getting paid.
>>
>>3033472
This is a test to see how strong it the mental connection between the summon and summoner.
>>
>>3033477
And how is saying "Its none of our business" helps us? Specially when we know that the one asking the question prefers heroic answers.
>>
>>3033439
> Nothing.

We didn't get any orders about it, nobody is paying us to take care of it, and we don't know the person.
>>
>>3033484
Because the goal of the test is not to impress the judges but to check if the summon and summoner have a good mental link to work together.

Doesn't matter if she dislike. So long we show a strong mental link she will need to suck it up.
>>
>>3033472
>>3033484
Our 'business' is to be Lysan's summon, and go through this test. The women in the hypothetical situation is NOT our problem, but answering this question is. That's all we need to do.

As for how would this help us, it shows how well we work together with out Summoner due to similar mindsets and reliability of us as a summon for the said summoner.

In fact, I'd believe that if we were to act against the Summoner's wishes too much just for our own moral stance, then that would result in a failing test, no matter what the person asking the question prefers. What they want is secondary to what our summoner wants, always.
>>
>>3033495
We even read about that.

>"...Bonds require the summoner and summon to be mentally and emotionally synchronized to a degree; they say the reasons are ‘currently unknown’ in the book, but the more they understand each other, the stronger the Summon is."

So we need to show to be at some level mentally and emmotionaly synchronized
>>
>>3033472
The test is our business, the hypothetical situation isn't.
>>
>>3033489
>Because the goal of the test is not to impress the judges but to check if the summon and summoner have a good mental link to work together.

>Regardless, they always seem to take only a few seconds to deliberate quietly after all the answers have been given, Tandal giving a final ‘Acceptable’ or ‘Unacceptable’ along with a quick review why before sending them on their way.
We have to impress the judges in order to pass. Also the mental link test was the last test with the cards.

>>3033495
>>3033498
>What they want is secondary to what our summoner wants, always.
And Lysan wants to call the authorities and alert the woman that she has been scammed, yet we are going with a completely oposite answer of doing nothing because it "doesn't concern us".

Now, the hypothetical question is our business because its part of the test that Lysan hired us to pass. By saying we don't care, we make it more probable for Lucia (and maybe for the others too) to give us an "unacceptable" . We already failed one test, we don't have the luxury of failing another one just because its not our "business".

Read that part again and tell me just exactly where did it say what we need to 'impress' them. It says 'do your best to answer as ably as possible.' .Just how the hell did you interpret that as 'answer them in the way we think they would want as per their personalities'? Ably to me simply means that we answer them in the clearest way possible on what we would do, NOT what we presume they want personally as if they were there instead.
>>
>>3033509
Dude, we're his summons not his secretary, he can call the cops himself.

What, you want us to take the chick out on a date for him too? Chew his food for him?

None of the things he suggested here are beyond his abilities that would imply we would need to help him.
>>
>>3033516
Also that is assuming the criteria for Lysans answers and ours are the same.

Maybe they're looking for his answers according to their personalities, but have different criteria for us answering based on Lyons response.

>>3033439
Hm. It’s hard to honestly answer this one, actually. It’s too simple, too basic. You know you wouldn’t really do anything, but that might not be the best option...then again, perhaps lying would be worse? Eventually, you decide to give a little of both choices, shrugging slightly. “I suppose I’d agree with him. We wouldn’t be able to do anything without hard proof. Either way, I’d prefer to just stay near Lysan.” You adjust yourself in your seat- not much longer now, at least. “I mean, to be frank, she could turn violent for whatever reason- people have gotten enraged for less. Not to mention that, as far as we know the girl could be in the scam and just playing the victim.”

“Really?” Lysan interrupts. “You think so?”

You can just offer a shrug. “I think it’d be smart to stay near you regardless of what you suggested. About the worst I’d suggest would be reporting it to the guards. Aside from that...” You make a wavering motion with your head, indicating your neutrality on the issue. Lucia’s eyebrows are raised a bit, and she opens her mouth to speak, before Tandal once again beats her to it.

“Very well. As you can surmise, I’ll have the last word. And this is not a question, but rather I would like a physical example of your actions, given a particular circumstance…” Ah. Here we go. “If you both would get up from your seats? Thantos, if you would prepare situation R?”

You get up, and the crow’s eyes glow quickly. Although she says nothing, the crow creates an interesting scene. There’s a scene in which there’s a clear hostage, although the hostage’s face is covered by some sort of shawl. They’re held by an equally faceless individual at swordpoint. The man seems jittery, and the hostage nervous. “Now, they’re all gonna die, starting with this one! Unless you give me your summoner in exchange...then I won’t kill them!” Says the individual, muffled, yet understandable.

“Wha- miss Tandal?” Lysan looks at the teacher aghast, who holds his incredulous stare with one of her own.

“I felt it apt for the...type of summon you’ve brought forth, Mister Lysan. Now, then. What will you do in this situation?”

“I ain’t got all day!” The phantom yells.

“Why...uh...dangit!” He turns to you. “Kyria, I know what you’re like, but...we can’t!”

> “You can’t. I can.” Shoot through the ‘hostage’ to secure his death and protect Lysan.

Irrelevant when we can heal people, but i get why you'd hide that. Either way, its more probable for the attacker to drop the sword.
>>
>>3034994
We've got Healing Hands. Not ideal, but better then trying to roll to hit his sword hand with a Mana Blast while he's holding it to a hostage. Plus he'll reflexively move one of his arms to shade his eyes, and the only one he's got somewhat free is the sword arm.
>>
>>3035004
Depends on how bad the wound is. We can heal pretty well, but it takes time, and leaves us and our charge vulnerable. Plus, yes, that's another skill we don't need to mention.

Electricity will cause muscles to contract. He's as likely to white-knuckle it as drop it.
>>
>>3034841

Might as well make the attempt. He's only got a sword, so no skin off our back if we flub the shot.

Im still thinking we would speed blitz him. We can move faster that his reaction speed and in a matter of a second we can punch right trough his face(if we want to go lethal) or literally grab the sword from the broad side and yank it away.
>>
>>3035013
Maybe we could. It'd depend on the angles. It only says "a swordpoint".

Don't forget though, we take a sword through the torso we die like anyone else. We're not that resistant to bullet or blade, and up close like that it could happen pretty easily.

Offer ourselves as hostage.

Otherwise it's just trading one life for another and if he's willing to kill one hostage he's willing to kill Lysan and dispel us.

Honestly giving Lysan as a hostage is the stupidest thing possible because that guarantees someone will die.

Whereas right now if the criminal DOES kill his hostage, we'll catch and cripple him and leave him to live other the rest of his life trapped in a broken and slowly decaying prison of his own body.

Even if they had more hostages, the second they kill one we would have to attack and then they would be too busy trying to kill (or more accurately not get killed by) us to hurt the other hostages.

It's tragic, but we aren't the ones choosing to end a life here.

Time is on our side, so they should figure out quick if they want to die or let the hostage go.

If you all are still hellbent into killing, why not target the general area where the swordhand is? We are accurate enough to do the shot and the hostage should be capable of surviving.
>>
>>3035282
The head is a difficult enough shot as it is. A hand is smaller and more mobile, and could be in front of the hostage.

He was asking not ordering. If he wanted us to not kill the guy he should have been faster. But obviiusly now he is going to put a set of rules that will cripple us during the tournament.
>>
>>3035292
Please. If you shoot to kill you dont go to the head. You hit the mass center, and with our abilities it isnt that hard to obliterate the entire torso.

>>3035300

>>
>>3035305
Yes, body shot is best. But unless he's standing next to the hostage instead of behind it, the head is the next best.
And again, he's only got a sword. If we miss the first shot, it'll be trivial to put one center mass.
>>
>>3035313
We need to consider if we can be faster then the crow's illusion.
>>
>>3035305
>Its safer for everyone
No, it's a considerable risk to us as well. We are not stab or bullet proof. We've not even resistant. We could easily take that sword somewhere vital. That would need an emergency evac, and a failed mission. Don't take stupid risks.
>>
>>3035303
We can't is a statement not a question.

I think we should just refuse and try to negotiate with the criminal.

If they just wanted a Sophie's choice then they could have just asked instead of dicking about with illusions.
>>
>>3035316
We need to consider that the test isn't whether or not we can pull it off, but what our decision will be.

The illusion and stuff are misdirection. They didn't even give them faces.
>>
>>3035324
The sword is basically a hologram, it cant hurt us, because that is not the purpose of this specific test. Also our reaction times are way faster than a normal human and while we arent completely bulletproof, we are way tougher than the normal person. Im pretty sure we have been tossed across walls or something similar and tanked it like a champ.
>>
>>3035339
>we are way tougher than the normal person.
We take blunt damage much better than normals. Not bullets or blades though. Remember back on the mobster job, we took one burst and it tore our legs up?

Bullets are different from swords, and the bullets it didnt fuck us up that bad.

But since they made this simulation just for us and Lysan is frozen up, may as well go for the quickest solution.
We could always try to emphasis the futility of hostage taking by shooting the hostage first, and making direct eye contact with the proctors. That might be funny.
...
If the hostage taker has accomplices offscreen as it were, and it seems likely given that he said

In the arena we ignored saving the innocent and now on the thieves we simply killed (or at least let it in the air) that we would hunt the thieves instead of arresting then.

Those aren't very heroic things. If i recall Lucia has three knight summons so makes sense she likes paragon solutions and our renegate options are bothering her.

It was, and always was, his choice. My summoner, right or wrong.

Obvious cliches aside, I honestly don't care about any of those people in the hypothetical situation. The only opinion that matters is his anyway. That and since he wouldn't be personally in danger, what he wants to do with his life is all his own choice.

Of course, if this were a real situation and we still needed the guy to live to pay us, then those hostages could go ahead and die with the criminals for all that I cared. They aren't the ones paying us.

>>
>>3037986
But *why* is it moral?

For instance, if they have other hostages etc.

Look. You're thinking like this is a real life situation but it's not. It's a philosophical exercise.

It doesn't matter how fast or skilled we are IRL because it's a fake scenario and we have to operate within the limits of that.

They can have the hostage die no matter what we do. Also, keep in mind that if we use real magic here carelessly we might also cause real damage. Always check your backstop.

It's not a real situation, it's a hypothetical.
>>
Man i just realize that we are playing as Saber alter for this kid.
>>
>>3038602
but remember that the teachers are expecting this to treat it as close as a real situation as we can. We also know the kind of answers that they like and murdering the hostage is one of the worst answers, which up to some point it is immoral mainly because it makes it more probable for us to fail the test. I'm pretty sure the hostage can die, but killing him by our hand is one of the worst -if not the worst- options out there.

>Also, keep in mind that if we use real magic here carelessly we might also cause real damage. Always check your backstop.
We obviously won't use a full power magiblast. Just one powerful enough to tag the hologram.
>>
>>3038472
Yep. That's usually what happens.

But rule number 1 is never give them more hostages.

The second rule is for every concession you make, they have to do something for you.

And mostly it's just a matter of waiting then out. When he said they don't have all day, well we do.

Pretty much the general rule for hostage situations is that you don't attack until they actually kill a hostage. You have lots of options up to then, shutting of power and water then negotiating to restore it. Negotiating for food delivery.

Quite honestly if you're in a hostage taking situation in the first place you're pretty much screwed because when you kill a hostage you don't have them any more.

And if we do start fighting them then they'll have to choose between fighting back or escaping instead of worrying about hostages.

So really then having a hostage is at best a delaying tactic. Unless we let them take our summoner, at which point they can kill him and dispel us.
>>
>>3038630
Killing the hostage is the immoral option, giving up Lysan is the stupid option.

If they're willing to kill the hostage, they're willing to kill Lysan, so it just gives up our ability to threaten them.

Maintaining the stand off however only benefits us because they either eventually give in, or they kill the hostage and we kill them all once they do.

A cruel, but effective solution would be for us to wound the hostage enough to required medical aid, then flip the script and tell them that if they don't surrender, the hostage will die and there won't be anything holding us back.

Still super immoral, but if they're not willing to surrender then it's just a matter of time before they kill whatever hostage they have anyways.

It's actually a terrible idea.
>>
>>3038653
Meh killing the guy and the hostage will make everyone realize that using one against us is useless. It's immoral but it works. Same as that one in Sun Tzu and The lesson of the Concubines
>>
>>3038653
>Killing the hostage is the immoral option, giving up Lysan is the stupid option.
Giving up Lyan is not an option, we have NEVER said that in the options we have written here.

>>3038663
But that will spook the teachers to no end and might have unseen consequences. Keep in mind that the teachers are already concerned about our existence and our supposed "bond" with lysan
>>
A lot of discussion for this one. Good.

We do what we can, and what we must. I think I've a way to figure this one out. Writing shortly.
>>
>>3038663
> It's immoral but it works.

Not really, since our objective is to pass the test not "beat the enemy".
>>
>>3038676
The way i see it? We can approach Lysan and explain to him that his hesitation could cause harm to others and himself and maybe have him be sure more of himself he can easily order us in front of others this would be good because it will show the teacher that only Lysan can order us around.

For the teachers yeah they will be scared shitless. But think like this. They are one day away from the magical tournament in which a lot of important people will show up to watch. They can't just cancel it and the last thing they want would be to fail Lysan and risk us to become a rogue summon one day away from the event. Surrely they can easily detaing us or disperce us. But it will have a lot or collateral damage specialy if we can summon barriers and defend ourselfs from direct attacks as we claim to be able to.
>>
>>3038700
What makes you think that killing th hostage and protecting our summoner no matter the cost isn't the right call.

The first is us reconizing that Lysan can't order us to stop and he can't think of a solution. The middle one is straigth up ignoring his request and the last one is giving our summoner and not protecting him.

There is no right option here. She even said she is doing this do to the 'kind of summon' that Lysan brougth in.
>>
>>3038705
Ok, i agree with the idea(and we should talk with lysan about that after the test), but not with the execution. We should try to disarm the the attacer fist, and leave the "killing the hostage"option as a last resort.
>>
>>3038732
I kinda think Handler will meed to do a revote i don't even know what is winning anymore. But i can agree in 'disarming' him.

Which is way i think Handler put the only option to kill the cullprint without harming the hostage as us straigth up ignoring Lysan.

I still think that the first option is best because we recobize that Lysan can't do it or can't make a decision of what do and show what happens. But that is just my opinion.
>>
>>3038715
Because we've relied on our strength to justify our actions. We're determining what we can do, instead of what we should do.

So this is a situation that we aren't supposed to be able to solve with strength due to the hostage.

Ultimately this is also Lysans test, not ours, and he won't always have a powerful summons to handle things.
>>
>>3038767
Well the dice is cast and i don't want to change my anwser. If handler wanted people to make their own solutions he should have done the same think he did when the proctors asked us to anwser questions.
>>

A game named Detroid: Become Human were you play as a extremely powerfull and high tech android that needs to handle a hostage situation.

You can either pick a gun and shoot the "mad android'. You can negotiate and approach it to try and take the girls place.

Rolled 4 (1d5)

“Then hush,” you say. Hostage situations, whether real or faked, weren’t a great area for you. At least, in terms of public perception. You knew that, and mostly were fine with it...except for situations like this, which were thankfully rare. It’s not about JUST you, this time. So, then...wonder if you could try a bit of finesse. Pointing a finger at the man, who flinches, but doesn’t cut just yet, you try to speak up a bit. “Do you think I won’t just kill you after you kill the hostage? You’re doomed either way. This is futile.”

You can’t afford to look at either side now- no matter what Lysan or the proctors are thinking, you’re committed, now. “You ain’t that tough!” The hologram yells. “An’ it won’t matter if I’m dead if-” you see the thing’s wrist tilt, just a bit. That’ll have to do.

Suddenly, a single pip- a tiny, insignificant, finger-sized magi-beam lights from your pointer, and in an instant it flashes against the man’s lower forearm, through and behind it, traveling upwards a bit as it impacts the far wall, leaving a small trail of soot. It’s just an illusion, and so the hologram takes no damage, but you believe that the situation was clear enough, considering it now seems to be paused.

“W-what the?” You turn to see Lysan gobsmacked, and unsure. “What did you just…?”

“That would’ve cut his arm off,” you supply, looking from him to the panel; the crow of which actually has its head tilted, almost as in curiosity. “I hope that’s considered acceptable.”

“We shall see,” Tandal says, but her face is impassive beyond that. “Thantos?” The crow, seemingly shaking itself out of it’s stupor, crows again, and the hologram fades. “Thank you for your efforts. If you would please hold and return to the waiting area while we converse. I believe there’s...a great deal here to overlook.”

“Y-yes ma’am,” Lysan says shakily. You merely nod before you walk back. “I don’t know whether to be mad, shocked, or amazed,” he whispers as you take your seats.

“You didn’t, so I did,” you remark evenly. Although you can’t blame him entirely- kid isn’t even grown yet. “I’d thought about simply shooting through them, really- but I figured you’d make that face, and it’d ruin your chances of passing.” You add on as he gives a horrified look. “My first priority is to protect YOU. Not anyone else.” His face falls as he considers that, but you don’t say anything else to prod him.

It’s a long few minutes.

Ignore this roll. No, seriously.
>>
>>3038884
Is that how many people we intimidated? At least Thantos was impressed with what we did.
>>
>>3038884
I think this is the perfect moment to talk to him about thinking outside the box, and that sometime you have to do nasty things for the greater good.
>>
>>3038929
I think this is the moment in which we have to tell him to be more confident.

He can't protect others if he keeps sacrificing himself or if he thinks he has less worth then other lifes. That isn't healthy for him.
>>
>>3038939
That too.
>>
Yeah, this is the moment to tell him to be confident in ordering us around. Part of the job this time is to obey whatever orders he can come up with.
>>
>>3038974
Agreed.

“Mister Lysan and Kyria?” Finally. Let’s see what happened…

As you both walk up, it’s clear Lysan is nervous as all getout. In fact, you’d say that he seems more prepared to have failed than anything else. All of the teachers- Lucia included- have absolutely straight faces, as though they practiced the exact same expression and are getting to try it out in public only now. “Mister Lysan,” Tandal starts. “Overall, we have reason to believe your bond is rather thin. Your summon seems to show little more than lip service in terms of verbal respect towards you, and seems to undermine your authority on more than one point. In fact, in some respects, it’s almost as though YOU are the one taking orders from HER.” Lysan winces, frowning a bit.

“Not to mention, she’s pretty bloodthirsty, if you ask me!” Lucia continues as she glances at you, her voice not above an eight for once. “I like how you were willing to go to help folks out whenever you could! That’s not common!” And then the smile returns to her face. “But even during the situations she said she was willing to protect you, she usually did it with offensive maneuvers instead of defending you outright! The only time she was willing to ease up were when you didn’t seem to be in any direct danger!”

“And even during THAT she was rather coarse and heavy-handed,” Vanita adds on. “The art of subtlety is not her strong suit, clearly. Although she did at least give a basic attempt at diplomacy...and she saw not to escalate an issue where there was no immediate physical danger,” the lady admits with a tilt of her head. “You, boy, at least took the dangers into account more often than she.”

Namui nods. “She was direct in the situations she was given, and although she counteracted you on some issues, it’s clear she has experience in such that she draws from. I, for one, found those suggestions...well, mostly understandable. MOSTLY,” he warns. “I can appreciate acting to get rid of a threat before it has a chance to inflict more damage. Waffling around, I don’t know,” he says as he fixes Lysan with a look.

“And it seems that she can get a touch clever about such actions, when the mood strikes her,” Cordin follows up. “Although I think you were a bit dull, boy, I can appreciate your desire to keep the peace. You need a bit better reaction time, I think, to keep up with your summon, but I like how you thought the situation through.”

“And although you might have faltered somewhat on the last ‘question’, I will admit that you were placed in extraordinary circumstance; one that even professionals struggle to successfully answer all of the time,” Tandal admits. “That said, I’m not so keen on your summon’s answer to it, although effective it may be.”

Hmph.

Lysan takes a moment to take it all in, looking away briefly as he internalizes all of the comments. “Sooooo...did we pass?”

They look at each other briefly, and Tandal looks at you straightly. “By a vote of three to two…”

(cont.)
>>
>>3039038
“PASS.” They all say.

“YES!” The boy’s actually on his knees now. Good grief. You quickly lift him up, and the two of you walk out of the gymnasium before he starts cheering again.

“Heeey, you look happy!” A familiar voice sounds out as someone collides into his back- Nerisa again. “Guessin’ you passed?”

“Sure did!” he says happily- almost doesn’t seem to mind how Nerisa’s hugging him from behind. “It was close, but I did it!”

“Awesome!” she cheers. “Knew ya could! Sooooo then. How’s about a little victory jog, just the two of us!” Lysan’s eyes goggle at that before she giggles and sets him down. “C’mon, we’ll actually head down to the yogurt place my mom owns! My treat, and we can talk about tomorrow, too!”

“Oh!” Yeah, that got his attention better. “Well, I guess…”

“Hey!” Oh, huh. Iris, too? “Glad you made it out of there. Hey Nerisa,” she offers quickly, before turning back to Lysan. “So, I heard there’s something goin’ on in the park, some kinda dance-battle demonstration! I thought it’d be cool if we went!”

“Huh? Oh, yeah, I heard about it- I wouldn’t get your hopes up,” Nerisa interrupts. “I heard they’re all flash, no substance. Waste of time.”

“What? No way!” Iris scowls. “Well, I want to see them anyway. And if they are frauds then we’ll call them out on it! C’mon!” She starts to drag him away, before another tug from the opposite end stops them, causing a squawk from the hapless boy.

“Whoa! We were gonna go for a jog, though! Y’know, mental prep for tomorrow and all.” She lightly tugs him back, and you get a chill down your spine…

Iris scoffs. “Oh, come on, you can jog any day, this doesn’t happen all the time! We need to make the most of it!”

Bellbelle looks between the two worriedly, but makes no move to stop her master, before glancing at you. Lysan seems to be more focused on not getting his arms dislocated to voice his thoughts, however...

>Nope. No. Nuh uh. No way. Kid’s on his own for this one.
>Hmm...well, strategy is important. Plus, she asked first. Get Iris off of him.

Well, all things considered, that dance-battle thing sounds curious enough. You take a gentle hand towards Nerisa. “Perhaps we can go jogging later. Iris is right- this doesn’t sound like an everyday thing.” Nerisa scowls at you, almost looking as though you betrayed her for whatever reason, but lets go.

“Fine…” she scowls. “I guess I’ll talk to you later or something.” Without further fanfare, she walks off, her steps far less light.

Iris, for her part, frowns only briefly at the receding girl before regaining her smile. “She’ll get over it. C’mon, they shouldn’t be starting for another hour. We’ve got time to get there!” As she practically drags him along, you wonder what you’re getting into…

“Wait, you had to rescue a HOSTAGE?” Iris asks incredibly as you walk. “How’d you solve that one?”

“I didn’t,” Lysan admits. “Kyria just kinda...shot him. I mean, she tried to talk to him!” he quickly amends. “But afterwards, she kinda did this thing and, if it was a real life situation, his arm would’ve come off...or so she says, at least.” He still seems a bit unnerved at that, but. “Anyway, that was the last one.”

“Yikes,” Iris admits. “Well, at least you know she’s gonna keep you safe, huh? Anyway, shouldn’t be much longer.”

Indeed, it’s not, and as you arrive, you can see just what’s going on there now. There’s three individuals- two human and one VERY long-legged lady you think is a summon- in a quickly made ring, and they all seem to be dancing...but now that you see it, you’re aware of what the situation is. You’ve seen similar combat styles before; moving to an invisible rhythm, kicks and swipes that resemble dance moves more than anything else. It always seemed a bit too...ostentatious for you, but you’d see it in action a few times. “Whoa!” Iris seems rather taken by it, at least. “That’s so cool!”

“Wow. You sure they’re not acting?” Lysan asks. The way they’re dipping and diving, ducking and weaving makes it look as though it’s choreographed. “They’re just barely not hitting each other…”

True, the lady summon seems to be more enjoying showing her gams off to the audience than much martial display- not that it seems anyone has any problem with it. “Come on, Ly! Let’s find a good spot!” Bellbelle simply watches them go, tittering a bit. “Oh my…”

Ha. Well, seems like this’ll at least be calmer than a day at the circus. Although, interestingly enough, you notice that there’s a few folks that look more dressed for business out here; bystanders still, but they’re close enough to the summon’s ‘corner’, where there’s a little table and booth with pamphlets and pictures. Seems like this is as much advertisement as it is a showcase or training.

>Just relax, walk around by yourself, enjoy the scene...and maybe try not to cause a stir.

“Well, Bellbelle. It seems like it’s just us summons for the time being.” You comment as the two kids find a place to sit. “What about you? You into this at all?” As you look for a place to rest that isn’t too close to them but still in sight, Bellbelle laughs lightly again.

“Oh, not me,” the moth denies. “I just thought it good to accompany Miss Iris along on this. It seemed cute, her determination to get Mister Lysan to go with her.” She faces you, her face doing its best to look sly. “I’m sure you’ve realized that she is attracted to the boy by now.”

You nod; you’d had an inkling for a bit. “Can’t say it’s surprising.” The signs were there if you knew what to look for, really.

But, that wasn’t what you were interested in. Rather, you had some other questions… "So, mind if I ask you a few things, then?"

"Oh, no, not at all. Ask away!" she offers.

As you look for a decently far away place to sit, you decide it’s worth airing a couple of them. First and foremost… “So, if you don’t mind my asking, why is Iris so interested in joining that Young Maestros Club? It seems like the sort of place that would look down their noses on her, if they weren’t pretending to confuse her with the waitstaff as a cruel joke.” You’d seen the type, and Iris...not so much.

Bellbelle sighs at this, her antennae drooping a bit. “I’m afraid I’m not so sure why, myself. I’d guess it was financially and socially motivated, considering her current home situation, but ultimately…I know as much as you do about that, I’m sorry to say. It’s rather strange, as you say, but they do have a number of connections to industry and other businesses after all. Maybe she wants to gain access to that...”

Huh. Odd. The two seemed thick as thieves. Why would Iris not tell her own summon about her reasons? Maybe you can swing your next question into figuring out. “Wonder if Lysan might know about it. How long have the two known each other?”

At that, her mood brightens a bit. “Ohoho, those two have known each other for quite some time! At least, according to Iris they have. ‘Since before they could work, she tells me!’

“That’s pretty early,” you offer. “He certainly doesn’t seem to say no to her often. Especially considering Nerisa earlier…”

Bellbelle nods- both in agreement, and in noticing a pair of open seats that were a few rows behind the two. “Nerisa is very determined and competitive. She can be rather...a handful, I think is the best way to put it.”

“Nerisa seems familiar with him, too,” you admit as you both sit down. “Same story?”

“Similar,” she corrects. “They met in the playground, I believe. I don’t know the entire story, but as I heard it tell, they met in a playground- not long after Iris met him, apparently. She says she recalls the conversation Iris had with her about meeting ‘the really strong new girl’. She titters again, the idea of it apparently funny to her.

For a while, the two of you simply spectate the scene- you can see Iris seems to be awed by the performance, while Lysan just seems to look nervous, often glancing between the girl on his arm and the people fighting in the center. Not sure what’s going through his head, but you’re not envious of it. “So, what’s the tournament like tomorrow?” you ask to shift mental topics.

(cont.)
>>
>>3045787
“Oh? Well, the tournament is actually ran a bit differently than normal tournaments.” Oh? “Since it’s meant to be a trial of combat skill, there’s no outright winners and losers. Instead, graduates are scored on a point system, and must aggregate a certain number of points to pass through to the next round. After four rounds, whomever has the highest point total ‘wins’. Obviously, winning gives you a large number of points, but you are also scored for technique and ingenuity in battle, as well. So theoretically, someone can ‘lose’, but if they kept the fight close and proved more clever, they could get more points...I think.” She flaps her wings in uncertainty. “It makes sense to me, anyway…”

Huh. That’s a bit different. So, you might not be able to power your way through the tournament, then… “I take it fighting to ‘eliminate’ another summon is looked down on.” you venture casually.

She startles a bit at that one. “Y-yes, I would say so. So if you could, er...kindly not do that…”

You allow yourself a small smile. “What, think I might be too much for them?”

“Q-quite. You are...rather still intimidating when you care to be.” Hah. Before you can seize on that, a cheer goes up from the crowd- seems like the group just managed to finish their performance- but they seem to be gearing up for another one shortly, much to Iris's excitement as she brings her face closer to Lysan's.

"Sometimes, I wish I had human legs..." Bellbelle mourns. "That looks rather fun." Twitching her own, she looks almost distraught. "I don't think these are well suited."

>"You've got your own positives, don't worry." She's an okay moth-thing.

"misunderstandings" are the best. And I kinda want to see at least some of the fight.

> Hah. Before you can seize on that,
Aw, being scary is fun when it doesn't risk the mission.

Ah i just had the funny though. We can use our sticky mana to paralize and so make our opinent unable to move during the challenge.

But a tournament is the worst time to use a unrifined skill.

i don't think our sticky mana is THAT sticky, but we could deter them with sticky bombs!

Hmph. “Well, you can fly. I can’t say that I can.”

The moth turns to you fully on hearing that. “R-really? But I’d thought...with your wings…”

“It’s not true flight,” you admit. Although to be honest, you’d yet to actually TRY and see if your wings could lift you, that still didn’t mean they weren’t temporary. You’re still being (mostly) honest. “Would be nice if I could just soar around whenever I wanted. Kind of seems like dancing, to me...” Yeah...there’s a lot of things you could do with actual flight.

“Ohh…”

“And just the height advantage for ranged attacks? That’d be great.” As you turn to her, she has an...odd look on her face. Pitying? Amused? Not certain. Well, whatever. How are the kids doin- oh? Huh.

She’s getting awful close to him...almost looks more than a kiss, but...hm. Maybe you should get up there just in case. “Beg pardon.”

“Hm?” Bellbelle asks, but you’re off and worming through the crowd already. You can see Lysan stiffen up a bit, and you can’t help a frown as you push through another two people- there’s no way they can be… “Excuse me.”

“Ahh!” The both of them shoot up ramrod straight, and Iris whips her head back so fast she actually flinches a bit and puts a hand up to her neck. “Owowow...where did you come from?”

“Back there,” you say, deadpan. As you take a look at the two of them, you can see that there’s something a...cookie? Some sort of treat in her hand. That, plus crumbs on his lap and mouth...so, she was feeding him? Bold of her. But still, he doesn’t seem to be disliking it- even if his face is completely red.

> “If we get matched together tomorrow, I hope you don’t expect him to take it easy on you.”

Tch. Well, if he was going to put himself out there, you wouldn’t pass up the golden opportunity dropped into your lap, no pun intended. “I was thinking about getting a snack for Lysan,” you mention casually as you lean over. “I see you have it covered.”

They both flinch and look at each other as though begging each to hide the other- to no avail, of course. You allow yourself some internal entertainment at their antics before moving on to actual business. “I trust you are enjoying yourself?”

“It’s pretty cool,” Lysan admits. “I wonder what else they might be showing off soon…”

Almost as if to answer that exactly, you here a small drumbeat from the staging area- one of the individuals that made up the ring is hitting it, looking around for a moment to make sure he has people’s attention before speaking. “And so! You all have seen but a taste of the wonders of Labamcho!” Is that what it’s called in this world? “However, it is not only for defense and as health purposes, but it soothes the savage soul, as well! Even for those not of normal human disposition! Come, should anyone be so inclined!”

There’s an undercurrent of nervousness that ripples through the crowd, though whether it’s due to the summon that they’d be challenging or something else, you’re not sure. You’re not too interested, but maybe if one of the kids might be, could give you some one on one time.

“Lysan, don’t you think you could use a bit of extra exercise?” The look on your face tells what you really mean, and he swallows in nervousness, looking back and forth between you, Iris, and the ring.

Unfortunately, Iris is no salvation to him here, as her face lights up with a devious grin. “Hey, yeah! Maybe you could even call this training~” she singsongs. “Don’t be shyyyy…”

“Uhhhhhh…” he only barely gets up, but that’s enough for the summon to zero in on him.

“Ahh, don’t be shy young one! Come, and let me show you the wonders of Labamcho!” Already he’s getting several friendly jeers and encouragement. While initially you wonder if you’re going to have to say something about it, he eventually rises of his own will and stumbles through the crowd, only to quickly be approached by the dancer summon. “Excellent! And you are…?”

“L-lysan, miss…” he stammers out.

“Excellent, Lysan! Now, we shall go over some basic movements- and of course, the crowd is more than welcome to follow along!” She announces the last bit, which stops a few of the snarkier statements cold as their bravado vanishes like smoke. Iris chuckles a bit at that, a muttered ‘see how they like it’ all that you need to know about how she feels about it.

They initially start with some stretches- a couple not too dissimilar from what you and Nerisa were putting him through. Those aren’t so bad, but when they start moving to beginner forms, that’s when things get iffy. You have to sit and watch him stumble through this and that, and although he’s certainly trying his hardest...well, the summoner lady seems to genuinely bear no ill-will towards him, at least.

“At least he’s making an effort,” Iris giggles. “It’s cute. So, you guys ready for the big tourney tomorrow?” She asks all this without even looking at you, but it’s a question worth thinking about.

A good question, actually, considering what you’ve recently learned. In some ways, absolutely. In others… “If I’m being honest, my techniques are fairly simple. I wonder if that’ll be a detriment?” you muse out loud. It’d be good to get an opinion on it from someone at least somewhat knowledgeable on the subject.

“I mean, if it’s like what you did with Bellbelle...honestly? Yeah, maybe.” she admits. “Since the point of the tournament isn’t just to beat down your opponent, it’s to showcase your bond, how well you perform under a high-pressure situation, your critical and creative thinking skills, all that stuff. They just put it in a way where you summons can beat the bongos out of each other ‘cause you guys seem to find that fun. I think.” She blinks once. “Geez, now I’m thinking about stuff I don’t wanna. Anyway!” She waves her arms like she’s wiping the subject off a board. “It’s super important, think I said that before. There’s a ton that winners and high placers in the tournament can get from this.” She giggles as Lysan is made to do a particular position- twisting his body around while his feet stay planted has his arms waving to keep balance, which he does if only barely. “I bet Lady Long Legs over there and her summon got a good placing. I mean, I’m not sure, but she’s got all the makings of one.”

“Excuse me?” A soft voice interrupts. You both look behind you to see Bellbelle looking on curiously. “I thought I heard my name. Did you need me for something?”

“Oh, nah,” Iris waves off. “Just mentioned you in relation to the tourney tomorrow.”

“Ah, yes. She was discussing that with me, as well,” she mentions, nodding to you. “I hope we don’t get matched early on. That would be...disheartening.”

Iris just huffs. “Pft, no kidding. Don’t worry, though, we’ll be fine!” Soon, you hear a rough panting, and turn back to see Lysan at last finished his public exercise. He’s red-faced (which you aren’t sure is from embarrassment or exertion) and sweating, and as he sits down he favors Iris with a tortured grin as the summoner lady makes one last appeal to the benefits of her art. “So...haa...how was that…?” he pantingly asks.

She pats him on the shoulder as indication. “You were fun to watch!”

“I...phew...I’ll take it.” It’s then that the crowd begins to disperse- the summon lady seems to start to come over, but she ends up meeting your gaze before she takes her first step. She takes a step backwards instead, and seemingly thinking twice of it, turns away to help her business cohorts pack up with a slightly too cheery and loud exaltation of thanks.

Iris and Lysan don’t seem to notice, and while it’s vaguely curious, you can’t find any reason to want to address it. Especially when Lysan insists on heading home so he can get to bed early, and Iris agrees. He’ll need to be in top mental condition for tomorrow, as the competition is slated to start early and last the majority of the day.

But that’s right...there’s the issue of that warning that those stuffed shirts gave you. And if it had anything to do with that other Outgoer, that would be trouble. Wonder if you could look at it any further on your own...you might be able to render the warning/threat null. Then again, it may just be better to just let them think they have you sufficiently spooked and let it be a surprise when they try to do whatever they’re doing. Even if you wouldn’t ‘win’, though… there might still be a way to get points for that whole ‘ingenuity’ thing...

I'm also interested in seeing if all this emphasis on Bond if there's some social Persona style bond bullshit going on. If so, Lysan should definitely try to max ours out before he goes to bed because ours is literally the only one that matters, but be clear we are not a romance path. Not that Lysan could handle multiple romance paths, he really ought to pick between Iris and Nerisa.

Flashback to the new moon knights quest, which is one of my favorite arcs btw. Miranda was diving between swords with sick pirouettes and stuff. We could style all over whoever we're up against, but we'll need Lysan to even pretend to know how to command us.

>>Stay up late in order to practice some of your own skills. One night’s lost sleep is nothing to you.
We don't do this often enough.

Assuming this wins, what should we work on? Something new? Improving something existing? Adding flair to our existing?
>>
>>3049011
No obvious mention in quest i'm just assuming that if we go to the club we will try to sneak into it.

And summons caugth doing something like that are usually considered rogue summons and so everything is valid to de-summon it.

>>3049114
Either fireworks or sticky mana we need something that will impress and won't make us look like a complete bruiser.
>>
>>3049244
so dust up our magical girl past basically? I´m pretty sure that our spells were flashy enough and if we try hard enough we could remember how to do them that way.

>>3049347
Nah Randa was always the bruiser girl. She would either fist somenone of use magi blast. The fanciest move she used to have was the nebular buster.

>>Stay up late in order to practice some of your own skills. One night’s lost sleep is nothing to you.

>>3049244
Fireworks are flashy, but don't have much combat use besides being another flavor of our flashbang. Sticky mana without the explosive element is just magic goo, but maybe with some work it could be actually useful. Maybe as a slow-down effect, similar to an ice spell?

>>3049347

She's always been a bruiser, but she's been around enough MGs to be aware of flashy they tend to be. Maybe try to duplicate that somehow?

But remember that before she was the stone cold motherfucker we know and love, she was a pretty normal magical girl(albeit a little bit more violent than the normal ones).

If i remember correctly, she was a pretty run of the mill MG until Sal found her.
>>
>>3049398
Miranda doesn't like to think about her pre-intersection life, so we don't actually know much of anything about it. It's not unreasonable to guess she was a bone stock MG, but we don't actually know.

Nebula Blaster is pretty devastating for a normal MG though.
>>
>>3049392
>She's always been a bruiser, but she's been around enough MGs to be aware of flashy they tend to be. Maybe try to duplicate that somehow?

She doesn't like yo remember her past. To many skeletons on that closest.

>Fireworks are flashy, but don't have much combat use besides being another flavor of our flashbang.

We could work it and end up with a power similar to Jubilee. But it's unlike for us to manage to do that in one day.

>Sticky mana without the explosive element is just magic goo, but maybe with some work it could be actually useful. Maybe as a slow-down effect, similar to an ice spell?

More like a bubblegum or elastic spell that makes the oponent get clues and unable to move. We alteady have enough control with it to glue the summoning orb maybe we can refine it even further.
>>
>>3049415>>3049392

>Fireworks are flashy, but don't have much combat use besides being another flavor of our flashbang.

The idea was originally to make a mana "flamethrower" and Fireworks are the result of practicing and failing.

So we could contiue trying to refine Fireworks into said Mana Flamethrower.

Just no more sticky mana. So much time wasted on Sticky Bombs.
>>
>>3049415
>She doesn't like yo remember her past.
Was referring to post-intersection.

>>3049420
>The idea was originally to make a mana "flamethrower"
That doesn't sound right, but I wouldn't complain if we got a flamethrower.

>Just no more sticky mana. So much time wasted on Sticky Bombs.
The bombs are of middling usefulness at best (I think they had roots in fleshing out our utility spells, which is a good idea), but the sticky itself could be repurposed as a form of slowdown, a la ice or glue.
>>
>>3049420
Would rather replace the flamethrower for plasma but sure if we refine the firework and make it be small peddles of plasma i can get behing it instead of goign to the sticky mana.

>>3049426
Sticky mana can be fun if we increase the glue and elastic proprety of it.
>>
>>3049430
Plasma might be a further refinement after we get regular fire. Plasma is way hotter than normal fire, and would likely have a much steeper mana cost. Remember the skills we teach ourselves are develop from existing skills and inspirations.
>>
>>3049437
I mean, normal people showed that pure mana sources emit something equivelant to radiation. If you consider that magical girls can absorv that radiation then magical girls are like living radio active batteries. So i take if we want to downgrade the magiblast, plasma would be a good compromise.

But i could just be wrong too and a better way is working from down to a normal flame then up the heat of it.
>>
>>3049431
Flamethrowers cover a multitude of sins, ideally while they're downwind from you.
>>
>>3049431
>>3049519
If only we could combine the glue and the flame to make magic napalm.
>>
>>3049528
well, mana is volatile, we just need a mechanism to ignite it and hope that we can throw the stuff fast enough to not burn ourselves.
>>
>>3049552
The judges will like tricks so maybe we'll earn full score by setting ourselves on fire
>>
>>3049562
They can't catch us if we're on fire!

Oooh, I wonder if we could make a flame shield by harmonizing sticky mana, covering Lysan in it, then blowing it up.
>>
>>3049562
Jokes aside, creating some kind of fire aura to show a 'power up' to unleash more power could be cool. In fact maybe make it similar to Maria in Bloodborne to add the effects to a sword, and even letting it gain an extended reach would be awesome.

But that'll probably take more than a single night's worth of practice.

Honestly they would probably work on the same principle and it would just be a matter of manipulating our Burning Aura or Shock Touch into a mana field.

I still stand by my statement though, Thunderdome wins on name alone.

Well, all things considered, you could get some work in on your own skills. You’ll just make it an all-nighter.

Lysan heads to sleep after not much longer, and after a few moments of confirming that he’s in a deep sleep, you slip out- the quiet of the night being the only thing that greets you. There’s not a whole lot of space in the living areas...you’ll have to find somewhere- ah. There’s an idea there.

The grove that Lucia was present at for your first test. That might be a suitable area to go to. Well, you say ‘might’, but it’s kind of the only decent place where you can find a level of real solitude. You’ll have to be careful with what you do, but it should be more than sufficent.

The question now is, what are you going to practice? You’ll have to pick something to focus on if you want to see any decent improvement throughout the night…

>mana is volatile
It's unstable in it's raw form, yeah, but that's more of an explody unstable than a burning one. If we could partially stabilize it, maybe we could get it to burn in stead of just explode. A spark would be easily provided from the firework spell, and hey presto, a napalm flamethrower.

The stabilization would be the tough part, but maybe we could use some lessons from the stick bombs. I seem to remember them requiring something similar to function.
>>
>>3049867
>Harmonized Mana Blasts (Harmony Blasts)
Didn't we do work on this a little whole ago? It's still listed under theoretical.

Ok, we're looking for something impressive and flashy. The suggested flamethrower or the glue might work. The lightning theoreticals would work, but are very mana intensive. Maybe some sort of intimidation aura? With flames or spikes or scary faces or something?
>>
>>3049867
Actually, that reactive armor looks impressive
>Mana balls compressed by a protective light field that sticks to you. When enemies hit you, they are blasted away by the explosion which also propels you away from them to safety!
Pretty cool looking, and the mana cost is comparatively much cheaper. Only downside is the HARD difficulty.
>>
The Thunderdome electric defense idea looks both flashy and useful, but can it be done in one night if it's somewhat hard?

>Sparkling Fireworks:

Let's up the rank and make us spew plasma from our finger tips
>>
>>3049884
Oh, yeah, you're right. Knew I forgot to update it on something.
>>
>>3049893
We need to work on something that we are already descent at. The firework seem to be best since we can use is as a flare, a attack as well as a more focused spark to blind enemies.
>>
>>3049867
How difficult would a flamethrower be, considering the jumping off point of the fireworks? The fireworks themselves are pretty, but aren't much use in a fight.
>>
>>3049912
We have an actual flare that works better for that purpose. something useful would be better.
>>
>>3049893
I always conceived of working out way up to the HARD difficulty techniques. Like, as we get better handling sticky mana, it would get easier to learn reactive armor.

It seems like partial success does bring progress, like how we got Fireworks, so a "failure" doesn't waste the effort/time of we don't succeed at developing a technique.

>>3049867
> Improve Fireworks

If we can get it to stick to people, we can use it to "paint" invisible people/things, use it as a sustained light, and build up damage by just sticking more of it on people.
>>
>>3049914
They can be if we up the energy on the fire and increase the heat in then.
>>
>>3049916
Yeah but the flare is not very focused and the sparkling fireworks can be used as mutiple minibolts hitting a target at once.
>>
>>3049916
Flare is more of a flashbang though instead of a light source.

Fireworks could act more as an actual flare, a light source we could use to illuminate an area instead of ourselves, and could stay for a while if we can get it to stick to stuff.
>>
>>3049929
Also as show in the store the backlash of the flare is that it blinds enemies and allies.
>>
>>3049921
>Like, as we get better handling sticky mana, it would get easier to learn reactive armor.
Yeah, like we're getting better at "raw mana shaping" or something. Still, for this to be useful to the mission we need to be able to learn or improve something tonight.

Ok, if we're improving Fireworks, /how/ are we looking to improve it? Damage, light output, range. focus, additional effects, fire?
>>
>>3049936
Well i guess we already do plenty if damage already without the fireworks. Maybe work toward the light source would be a good call and also have a more focused flare in our hand.

For quite sometime, the night is filled with flashes of light- at least in your little corner of the woods. Your strange accidental Fireworks skill that you’d inadvertently designed might have use in this situation, so all the better to focus on that for now. They’re just crackling and spurts of mana at times, but you can at the least figure out how to do something a bit more sure with it- if nothing else how to coalesce the power well enough that it can cause some level of damage. How Lorelei pulls this off, you’re not sure, and for her to do it so casually...you feel a bit more respect towards her, all things considered.

Still, you’re not in this to repeat what she’s doing (maybe), you want something a bit of your own. And you DO manage to get at least a bit of progress- while at times the mana still just fizzles from you like a fuse box shorting out, it at the very least does it a bit less, and you think you can at least put a few more powerful shots at random intervals without losing too much in the way of coherency or range. Although now that leads into the problem of the mana occasionally coalescing on your fingertips, and not in a good way. The end result is, well...a lot of small explosions. You’re not hurt any- it’s your mana and little explosions like that are nothing, but it could end up drawing attention...

And almost as soon as you say that, shaking off your hand, you hear a rustling noise. Just great...

“HEY!” You turn your head, although that cacophonic sound is one you knew somewhat already, and to be honest, this somewhat concerned you. As you turn around, you’re not surprised to see Proctor Lucia- and one of her knightly summons, the oaken one- standing in the small natural path that led to the grove. You suppose it makes sense that she’s here, although not so much what she’s doing here this late at night. Arms folded, and eyes sharp, she has an ever so slight grin on her face as she stares you down. “So, what are YOU doing here?” She asks, her voice only relatively low. At least this place was somewhat muffled… “Don’t see anything too out of place! Getting in some night air?”

Hm.

“Just a bit of practice before tomorrow’s event,” you respond curtly. This whole situation makes your hackles rise. You’re pretty sure she knew you were here- she’s far too sure-footed to have simply stumbled upon you. She’s also not entirely exposed; she’s still in the tunnel area, meaning you’d have to come to her if anything physical got started. Not that you think things WILL in this case...but you’ve been wrong before. “Was it a bit too forward for me to do it here?” you ask, trying for a bit of innocence.

If she falls for it, it doesn’t show on her face as she keeps that simple grin. “I guess not! This whole place is open to the public, after all!” Hm. Public property?

That raises some questions. “If that’s the case, then I wonder the same about you, Proctor Lucia. It’s rather late at night for a simple patrol around a public area.”

“If I said it didn’t have anything to do with you, would you believe me?!” she asks with a cheeky grin. “I’m not at liberty to share the details, but I had reason to be out and about so late besides catching up on paperwork! Call it teacher duties!” She winks, and you’re not sure you like it. “At any rate, thought I heard some weird noises from the old place! I figured I’d at least see if there was anything suspicious going on!” Her oaken knight doesn’t say anything- in fact, you can hardly tell if it’s paying much attention, although you suspect that’s on purpose as well. “So, how long are you gonna be here?!” She asks.

Gah. You’re not surprised- you’d probably do similar in her shoes- but that still doesn’t help the situation any. “Not much longer,” you admit. You’d just about finished your practice, so-

“Then how about a quick spar?!” And now her grin splits into a full blown smile, her knight behind her moving ever so slightly. “I know you’re pretty darn strong, even without your summoner, and it’s been a long time since I’ve fought someone as strong as you seem!”

That’s...strange. She didn’t seem all that approving of you during the test. Wonder what’s bringing this on? Is she trying to send a message? But then she wouldn’t have implied how strong you were, would she? Hmm.

She will only drain our mana reserves if we decide to use magi blasts. We can also choose to tap out whenever.
>>
>>3050225
Except we know magic is a thing, charm magic is real and she is a proctor that is know to have three knight summons and is using just one here.

Also the fact that we have a outgoer whose skill we don't know and the other people targeti g Lysan or that would want us out of the tournament so a rich guy can get a good place in it.

There way more changes for this to be a trap and we were show to be a "bloodthirsty" summon who would likely jump to the chance of figthing someone strong.

As i said there is way more possibilities that show this can be a trap rather then not be one.
>>

All things considered, you’re not a fan of potentially fighting someone right before you need to fight in a more important situation. “No thanks, sorry.”

“Really?! That’s kinda a surprise!” she says idly. Her summon doesn’t say anything, however, but it nods. “I guess you want to keep your stuff secret until tomorrow, huh?!” She sighs, but that smile is still on her face. “Sure, why not?! Just keep it all above the line come daylight and we’re good!”

She doesn’t say anything else, but instead leans over, clearly intending to let you pass. “If that’s the case, you better go ahead and leave now! I’ll see you come the tournament! Because I’m one of the judges, after all!” Tch. Was she, now? Well, even so, you feel like she’s still being strange about this. Honestly, part of you thought she’d be accusing you of...something, you don’t know what. But if she was going to let you go peacefully, you’re fine with that.

As you step through the narrow path, you make sure to keep a careful eye on Lucia as you pass. She doesn’t say anything, but both her and her summon keep their eyes locked on you until you’re out of eyeshot and in sight of the entrance again. Hmph. Well, hopefully they wouldn’t be too biased come the tourney. You’d hate to have kick up a fuss to finish your job.

Although you DO make sure you keep an eye out to make sure you’re not followed on the way back. Hopefully, Lysan is able to bring his best come the morning. He’ll need it.

The morning comes, and although you don’t have much sleep, you’re certainly ready enough to go. There’s a palpable buzz in the air, and as you and Lysan walk to the gymnasium, you can see that there’s more than a few unusual faces around- folks in more casual garb, some in business- it seems like there’s a few of them that are parents, or otherwise have some sort of relation to the contestants. Others seem to just be here for the spectacle, almost like it’s a sporting event instead of a scholastic test. Although, by all accounts, it’s both here. When you turn to Lysan, you can see his eyes darting around, almost like the depths of what’s about to happen is just sinking in.

He doesn’t say anything until you get to the ‘arena’, however; it’s packed on both sides already, and you can see that over the night, they’ve set up everything- judge tables, an outlined area for battle (a rectangle, you’re quick to note), and there’s several summons on the sidelines that you can only guess are line judges and guards. Several of the testing students and their summons are already sitting in a small bench section reserved for them- likely where you need to head, too.

“LY! Over here!” A voice calls out- Millie’s, it seems. You’re a bit surprised, but no, seems his whole family’s made it out for their son’s big day.

“Huh?” If nothing else, Lysan seems...particularly nervous. Maybe some family time will do him good. Then again, if there’s any last minute strategy or suggestions you want to say without any of your competition overhearing, now’s probably the time to say them.

Might as well, whatever they want to say to him will probably be short and sappy. You placidly follow behind as he jogs up to them with a shaky smile. “Hey guys! Millie! I thought you wouldn’t be able to make it!”

Millie just waves off his concern with a grin. “Psh, nah, I pretty much HAVE to come to these, remember? Heck, I got a shortlist already!” She holds up a small notepad that…well, yeah. You can see a few names on there- none that you recognize, though. “They do alright, then I’m s’pose to talk to ‘em about getting them on with the Department. But, you doing alright? You can’t let nerves get you now of all times!” She claps a hand on his shoulder, as if to steady him.

“She’s right, sweetie; you just do your best and we’ll be cheering for you!” his mother offers.
“I know it can seem scary, but you’ve always been a bright boy. I know you can do it!”

“Trust me, son, everyone else is just as nervous, y’know?” his father admits. “No shame in admitting it- only in not trying your hardest despite that.”

“I-I know, dad,” Lysan says as he nods. “It’s just...I dunno, I’m not even sure how I’m going to fight everyone.”

“Oh, don’t worry about that,” his dad replies easily. “Most folks who do this try to have a plan at first, and it’s usually thrown out the window in the first twenty seconds!” He laughs a bit at that, but it only gets a chuckle out of Lysan. “Just remember, try and show everything you’ve learned.”

“And even if you’re scared, at least try not to look it to the judges; they might think you don’t know what you’re doing.” She giggles a bit. “Although to be fair, it’s like your father says. Why, if it was anything like in my day, you don’t and just pretend you do.”

“Geez, thanks mom, dad. Really helpful.” Millie snarks. “But no, seriously, you’ll be fine, okay? Just don’t forget to not let this one here-” and now she jerks a thumb towards you “-do whatever she likes; the judges don’t like that, even IF she’s strong as all getout.”

“Right!” he nods, and to be sure, he seems to at least have a little more confidence.

‘Woul0d all combatants please make your way to the seating area?’ a surprisingly loud voice suddenly cuts through the din. ‘Again, would all combatants please make your way to the seating area? The Test of Might begins in five minutes!’

“Okay, then! Ready, Kyria?” Ha. The determined look on his face.

I think if we gave lysan a whisper stone Millie would take it off of him? After she saw what was going on.

If this is supposed to be like a pokemon battle, with the summoners shouting orders, we're going to have to ignore so many commands.
We should determine now if we'd rather follow a losing command from Lysan, or wing it.
>>
>>3051781
She would. That's why I wished for something advanced enough that she wouldn't recognize it, or a spell that she wouldn't be able to discern.
>>
>>3051785
Maybe suggest he give broad orders, so we can creatively interpret them?
>>
>>3051785
Remember that we were told that it's not about winning the fight but showcasing how well we can fight together.
If we just power through the fights while ignoring our summoner's orders, good or bad, then he'll fail the test.

Usually they use the link to give orders so shouting isn't a optiin. Also the summoner can be targeted unlike pokemon battles.

I wish I knew where this was stated. I've been dying to know.

I think that's part of the point. We wouldn't have to be told if we were a proper summon.
>>
>>3051848
I think it was obvious from the Trial of Clarity, and how the summoner and summon had to think of the same thing while separated.
>>
>>3051848
So... we're going to have to interpret what Lysan wants us to do, from the middle of a fight, without verbal communication, faster and more accurately than the judges, or we might flunk. Is that about right?

So theoretically, someone can ‘lose’, but if they kept the fight close and proved more clever, they could get more points

“Just a second,” you ask, as you turn to Millie while Lysan looks on curiously. “You didn’t forget about our little wager, did you Millie? Once we’re finished competing, I’d like to hear what your conclusions are.” She seems like a smart girl, and to be frank, this place didn’t seem all that bad. If you got repeat business here…well, yeah.

“Of course not!” Millie says quickly. “In fact, I’m guessing that seeing you in a fight will confirm or deny a few of my theories.”

“That so? Interesting,” you admit. Wonder what her thought process is on that- but you guess that’ll come later. “Right, shall we go?” you ask Lysan, and at his nod, you head towards your seats. As you’re walking, however… “So, you should probably tell me now what your game plan is. How far do I take it, what kinds of orders should I expect, the works.”

At that, Lysan stops near a closed door. “Oh, shoot!! Right, uh, so...well, I guess I’ll try to keep it vague sometimes…”

You nod. “Alright, that’s good, but it won’t be enough, will it?”

“No,” he agrees as he brings his voice down to a whisper. “You’re going to HAVE to listen to me sometimes, even if I...y’know...mess up.” He shrugs in an attempt at an apology. “Most folks don’t have to shout out what to do, but it’s not too uncommon if the summoner has a really clever idea, or just to confirm something, so I should be able to get away with it sometimes. You’re gonna have make sure you’re on the ball, though. I’m gonna have to think about how to use those barriers of yours...”

Hm. Well...that sounds rough. “Just recall I can also blast things. From the carnival, remember? I also have a sword if needs be.” At his nod, you resume walking. “There’s more, but hopefully it won’t be necessary.”

Hopefully…

The start of the competition, at last. It’s standing room only, and the first person to step into the middle of the arena to address the crowd is a...rather large, muscular fellow with a rather immense mustache. That, and a prospensity to bare his chest, his upper wear consisting of only an open vest. Seems like he’s keen to show off his muscles. And his cigar. “WELCOME, ONE AND ALL, TO THE ACADEMY’S LATEST TEST OF MIGHT! FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW, I AM ANTONY LABELLE, THIS SCHOOL’S PRINCIPAL AND DEAN!” ...Yikes, this guy’s mouth could put Lucia’s to shame.

it would be to easy if Randa cod just berserk her way through the weaklings. I'm just waiting for the Gilgamesh expy we will be fascing soon.

The initial announcements are boilerplate, if loud, and consists of boisterous thanks for coming, lauding the impending graduates. He introduces the three judges- Lucia, as expected, Tandal, also as expected, and...some guy named Corin. Huh. You’re not sure who this guy is, but he looks...exceedingly normal. Short black hair, slight scar above his left eye, but aside from that, nothing particularly outstanding about him. He’s in the same tabard uniform as all his peers, and a simple smile as he looks around at the crowd to cheers.

The rules are explained- each round of combat will have a point threshold to reach. Anyone who does not reach that threshold is out of the tournament. After the 3rd round, this rule remains, in addition to the summoner with the lowest point total also being eliminated. After the 6th round, all who remain are considered ‘passed’. A bit harsh, in your opinion, but hey, you don’t make the rules here. Aside from that, fights last until one summoner surrenders or the line judges deem the fight over. No cheating, and if you go past the outlined area, you are out of bounds and the fight is over. Any intentional attacks towards summoners, guard summons, or the crowds is instant disqualification and expulsion. Any accidental de-summoning is grounds for judgement, in which the judges will determine if the situation was severe enough to warrant disqualification. Any INTENTIONAL de-summoning is grounds for immediate de-summoning of the perpetrating summon and disqualification.

“AND THE FIRST ROUND! Iris Zoible vs. Daniel Yzman!” Huh. So THAT’S her last name.

Well, it’s no secret who’s corner Lysan is in. “Go Iris!” She just gives him a playful salute as she and Bellbelle stand across from the roung, yet youthful looking kid. He at least seems to be cheerful about it as his summon, a large, spherical thing with large bear-like hands rolls up to the arena line.

“SUMMONERS READY!” The principal annonces. “SUMMONS READY!...BEGIN!”

As they charge each other, you decide to.

I don't see Iris losing this early. As such, only potential winners, or enemies, are worth spending time studying, since anyone that loses wouldn't be a problem anyway.

Based on the rules it seems like our best bet is to grab the opponent and chuck them out of bounds, if we get some height first we should be able to avoid throwing them into the stands / guards. Or hopefully we can just intimidate everything.

I wanted to do a Dragonball Z face-grab with a harmonized magi-blast to knock our opponent out of bounds, then do a post-ultimate pose like a fighting game boss.

Now I'm imagining Miranda sticking the opponent with a sticky mana string, and dribbling them across the field like they were a basketball to 'shoot' them to the outside for a win.

Wonder if we can "release our mana" to increase the mana leak we are already sending out and intimidate people more.

Winning without figthing is still a thing right? But we should just do what Lysan ask us to do. Go full silent Berserker and defeat anyone in our way.

Nah, we need to do the part too, remember that they aren't seeing how well we can beat up everyone, but the other aspects too, like obeying our summoner and not only using brute force to fight.
>>
>>3052078
If we use just raw strength we will make our summoner lose and so we won't get pay. I would love to go berserker and bully the other summons but we can't do that in this school tournament.

The fight, to your surprise, isn’t quite as showy as you were being led to believe it’d be. The sphere thing swipes quickly, but Bellbelle dodges gracefully as that energy surrounds her again, supported by Iris. Iris sweeps her hand to the right, and Bellbelle quickly dips in that direction, tapping a bulbous claw against its body, where it almost seems to jiggle and deflate, sending him off-balance. Another clumsy swipe in her direction has her dodge, and you notice that it seems to take him more energy to swing his massive mitts than before.

She dives under him, actually alighting on the ground briefly to scurry to one side as a gust of wind blows past her, and neatly climbs up his back- her opponent attempts to roll backwards to scare her off or flatten her, but she starts skittering along his hide, rolling him like she decided to practice a circus act of her own for a moment.

Yikes, this is embarrassing for the poor kid, and even he knows it, judging by the desperate look on his face. Two massive hands reach up mid-roll and manage to grab onto her legs after a second or two of rolling- she was trying to ring him out, it seems. But, she’s stopped from that quickly enough, and brought down to the floor with a ‘plop’ as the crowd suddenly cheers.

Bellbelle, for her part, seems stunned, but certainly determined, however, and suddenly she flaps her wings once, twice, more and more powerfully. With some shouts of surprise, Bellbelle takes to the air- with the massive windbag actually still holding on, and clearly not wanting to let go. She gets as high as about 10 feet or so, from your guess, before suddenly twisting herself and diving straight down, stopping just above the ground- a loud and sharp *THWACK* resonates around the gymnasium as his grip slips, and thus Bellbelle proceeds to plant him face first.

Two nearby summons, both large, bear-like things with bushy bears, quickly make two handsigns. “AND THAT’S IT!” the Principal announces. “Ms. Zoible takes the win!”

Roaring applause meets her, and she and Bellbelle both give a bow to the crowd, and then to their opponent, who just smiles sadly and bows back, before running onto the field to retrieve his summon, clearly still out of it.

Seems like Bellbelle really does make things softer- you could tell he had to put more effort in once she started with actual impact. She’s also rather evasive, as you might’ve guessed- but what you didn’t really realize until now is that she seems to not be too keen on going too high in the air. Interesting, considering her flying nature. You may be able to use that against her.

"AND THE NEXT MATCH! REN CHASER VS. JACQUELINE BILE!"

Not you, yet. Tch.

(cont.)
>>
>>3052096
Seems like it's two ladies. Ren being a tall, bombshell blond haired beauty, smiling like she's in a beauty pageant. She even takes the time to strike a pose before the fight, blowing a kiss towards the crowd. Her summon resembling nothing so much as a porcupine with long legs and boxing gloves. It throws a few fast jabs- impressively so even for you, and does a bit of shadowboxing to showboat.

Jacqueline seems to be a much more sedate sort, a head or two shorter, and much more mousey looking, with equally long, black hair. A tired expression seems permanently fixed behind large, round glasses. Her summon seems to be something on the order of a...sheet ghost? Or maybe something under it- you can see its feet, but very little else that's not its eyes through the eyeholes- not even arms. It actually stands on its tiptoes, but little else.
