Not willing to compromise the lead they have. Shun Takahashi decided against brute force. Still, even with this method their choices are severely limited. The enemy clearly have people around the area, and Takahashi already started doubting his new partner.

"So, what are we going to do now?", Natsumi asked.

"Hmm... We could pretend to be room service, then force our way in when they open the door, but I don't see that being any less forward than just breaking the door open...."

Takahashi thought of eavesdropping on the Commissioner through the room next to theirs, but there's no way he can do that without forcing the room's door to open in the first place. These doors are card locked damnit!

"Suppose you don't have anything that can open an electrical lock like these do you, kiddo?", Takahashi requested jokingly to Natsumi.

"I.... I think I can. Give me a second."

He clasped his hand on the electrical lock, hiding whatever he's doing using his body. Small flashes of light can be seen emanating before a satisfying clicking sound emerged.

"Wow, good job kid. You're quite the tech wiz-"

The look on the already sickly face of his worsen. Takahashi thought its impossible for it to go any paler, but it did.

"Lets... just keep on going. I'm feeling a little under the weather today.", Natsumi responded weakly.

Let's see.... the wall is pretty thick, but the inspector can hear faint murmurs when he stick his ears to the wall. Perhaps a cup can amplify the sound, Takahashi thought as he grabbed one from the few already present in the room. Holding it and his phone together, he hopes that he'll at least catch intelligible sounds instead of mating noises;.

After 5 minutes of holding his phone and glass cup over the wall, Inspector Takahashi relents his grip. Now it is time to see id the recording is usable or not. Natsumi too stood close, coughing occasionally as they both listen to the recording. As expected, the quality is quite poor.

"...liste....eed....ignor....oper.....tria.....transac....."

The audio recording goes silent but seemingly spikes in volume near the end.

"It's bad manners to eavesdrop, you know?"

Natsumi and Takahashi was caught by surprise. The target knew all along, but from when? Heavy banging can be heard as something tries to force itself inside. The door breaks open as a group of men in the hotel's staff attire rushed into the room. Along with them, the girl you're pursuing sits on top of the commissioner who is now moving on all fours half naked, blindfolded and gagged.

"I must say I admire your bravery, oji-san, and that filthy looking guy over there. Unfortunately, the moment you entered territory, you've already lost the game."

She swings her left leg to sit cross legged, hitting the degraded commissioner on the head along the way. This does not bother the old man it seems as the commissioner squeals in pleasure.

"I have eyes all over the building, this place is my fortress, no! My castle! The moment intruders like you come inside, I'm already alerted to your presence!"

"You're here to brag, or something? Yea, yea, you got us, kid. What's next, crashing this hotel room with no survivors?", Takahashi scoffed.

The girl definitely is irked by Takahashi's indifferent attitude to his own position right now.

"It's Hime-sama for you, old man! And, no. I'd rather not waste good manpower."

A pistol is thrown at Takahashi's feet. Hime motioned Takahashi to pick the gun up.

"Kill that filthy guy next to you. After that, we'll talk a bit further on what I intend to do with you. If you want to live that is."

Natsumi stood firm though. He is shaken, sure, but there's a fire of determination in his eyes. He seems to trust Takahashi to not side with their target. The inspector is not so sure though. He haven't done something like this, but he sure as hell have done a variant of it before to save his own hide.

Should he obey the mahou shoujo, or something else?

We still got the phone in our hand? Pretend that we gotta at least keep a picture of that bastard for a laugh. Text the dept that a mind control Mahou shojou has taken over this hotel.
We really should have warned SWEAR about this before we entered.

In retrospect, better idea.

I like these, calling in back up is always the smart choice.

The problem with that is that it doesn't seems like we can do that right now. We might have a chance to do so if we shoot her (probably won't kill her, but it will make her mad enough to make mistakes and stall her enough for us to escape).

"Calm down. Panicking here won't do any good."

Takahashi slowly puts down his phone on the bed beside him, deftly dialing the 3-digit emergency number and muting incoming voice along the way.

"So, I guess you're a mahou shoujo? Tell me, how the hell did you manage to pull your strings around here? Even controlling Commissioner Munakata over there."

The inspector stalls for time, all the while checking the pistol he was given. It is a Glock from the looks of it, but he's not sure what model it is. Pulling back the slide, it is loaded and the safety is off.

"There is no point in hiding it I suppose. I'm not going to tell you exactly how, but let's just say when I managed to fulfill my power's condition, you'll be as servile as piggy here.", Hime pointed at the degraded old man.

"My reach is not limited to this building, but also in the law enforcement of XX prefecture. This city is my playground, and for it to stay that way I must remember the faces and names that might cause me trouble later on. I've memorized it all, and you, Shun Takahashi, is in my list."

Looking satisfied, the pistol immediately was aimed at Natsumi's head. The young man was startled by this.

"Ta- Takahashi! What are you doing?"

"Yeah. Sorry kiddo...."

Hime's smile widens as the inspector's finger closes in on the trigger.

"...but things are about to get rough!"

In a split second, the pistol was immediately turned to the mahou shoujo. Multiple shots were fired, hitting the girl and a few of her posse. As Hime falls from her unsightly throne, the rest however starts to dogpile on the inspector and Natsumi. A few were sent flying by the young man through an unnatural feat of strength, but its clear that Natsumi is already out of energy form the start. Soon, both of them are pinned down, facing the ceiling.

"Not too shabby. You're a good aim, Inspector."

The mahou shoujo stands tall before Takahashi, perfectly fine.

"Too bad you're shooting blanks. You don't think I'm dumb enough to give live ammunition to some rando I've just met would you? Tsk, tsk."

She kneels down next to Takahashi's head, raising her arm over it.

"Like I said, I do not waste good manpower. The blank would at most incapacitate the guy, and both of you will be safe under my wing."

She pulled out a cardboard cutter, which she brandishes for a while. Expecting it to harm him, Takahashi closes his eyes and grit his teeth. Oddly enough, no pain came to him. Instead, the sharp edge of the tool slices across Hime's arm.

"No more screams now.... just dreams. It will feel good soon enough, just like that piggy is feeling over there."

Her servants forces Takahashi's mouth open. Soon, a drop of blood forms from the shallow cut on the mahou shoujo's limb.

"Waagh ghe fugghhh?!"

Are they intending on feeding me her blood? Is this the source of her control over these men? These are the questions flying around in the inspector's head right now. No matter, he'll find out soon enough...

"Hime-sama."

The mahou shoujo immediately pulled away her arm as soon as a hotel staff called out to her.

"SWEAR forces are approaching the building."

"What?! Damn... Contact "her". We'll move out straight away. Carry these two stooges along!"

Hime hastily retreats, her goons pulling the duo up and following her. Neither the inspector nor Natsumi have the strength to resist any longer. Help is but an arm's reach away too. Still, Takahashi convinced himself that he can stall some more time, that not all hope is lost.

[Back to Ichijou Sakurai]

You sit down in your apartment's living room. It is currently 9 pm. Recently, your close friend Shun Takahashi had disappeared and his last known location is at a 5 star hotel. It seems that he's been tailing a mahou shoujo and Commissioner Munakata, a corrupt son of a bitch who is one of the reasons that you're out of the police force. SWEAR operatives found his phone lying in a broken-into hotel room that was connected to an emergency hotline which he used to warn the law enforcement. In it is various evidence pointing towards Munakata's involvement with a mahou shoujo, which led to a major restructuring in the police force's ranks. While your are distraught by the recent events, tomorrow is also the day the sanctioned mahou shoujos arrive at base for the program you've (reluctantly) agreed in joining.

If luck is with you, Yuuki will be joining this branch of the prefecture again, and perhaps with another one or two more. You have the night free in the moment. What will you do for the time being?

We should consider carefully what gift to get, as it will affect their impression of us.
>>

Like, nice business card holders. They probably weren't given any, and treating them as respectable members of the workforce could go a ways in helping them consider themselves as productive society members, that they can build relationships with others, even if they have to endure being treated like Ainu or burakumin.
>>
>>3010377
This sounds 900% Japanese. I like it. Buy a few types and let em pick out which ones they want while we save the rest for future batches?
>>
>>3010454
>Buy a few types and let em pick out which ones they want while we save the rest for future batches?
No, we have to choose. Something silver, preferably conservative and professional looking. And make sure that we have the store gift-wrap it. They'll use the appropriate gift wrap based upon the parameters: New Hire, Woman, straight out of college, will be working closely, no standard year-long orientation.

And before anyone suggests wrapping it ourselves: Japanese culture values presentation and the thought of the gift. It is better to admit that your gift-wrapping skills are amateur and pay to have it done right, than to think that personal effort is superior to a professional's expertise.

Otherwise you get Monkey Jesus and other such failures.
>>
>>3010377
That's fucking lame, and not even in a funny way. Its lame lame, specially because you have to know beforehand the names of the new guys and make a design that fits the personality of said person. Also those things take about a day or two to print, and we don't have that time. Lets buy some chocolates or alcohol instead.
>>
>>3010501
Business card holders, not business cards.
And chocolates or alcohol?
At least the business card holders show we respect them.
What brand of chocolate were you thinking of? Surely not name brand mass-market fare.
>>
>>3010503
No, the business cards show that we don't have any personality whatsoever other than work. The chocolates and alcohol at least show that we would like to meet their other non work related side too.
>Surely not name brand mass-market fare.
Of course not! They should be from the local brewers and chocolate makers, because that way it shows that we care about them and also gives them a little tease of what the city can offer.
>>
OR
We can take them into a little sight seeing tour of the city. That way they get more familiar with the city's layout and we get to know them better.
>>
>>3010512
The business card holders show we're considerate.
High-quality sake or sweets can be fine, but NOT as a way to show we want to meet them outside of work. That's a social faux pas, an invasion of their privacy.
Welcome them into the workforce and the organization, not get to know them like some kind of creep.
>>
>>3010518
...when have you seen force officers that arent in a desk position use business cards? I'd buy it if they were in a "creative" job, but police officers/soldiers ? come on man.
>>
>>3010524
Japanese police officers having business cards that have their number as well as the Prefectural Police Headquarters number and that of certain hotlines.
>>

Business card holders, also maybe something that works as an apology.
I want to pre-emptively ask their forgiveness of the prejudice and annoying quirks they'll have to put up with from some co-workers.

While the younger generation of Japanese workers are far more individualistic, they still appreciate tasteful and understated aesthetics in a workplace setting.

The attached pic is of a MUJI (Japanese boutique) metal business card holder.

Here's another article on business card etiquette, how much individuality you're allowed to get away with, and how even sailors carry business cards and have their own nomenclature.

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/community/2017/10/29/our-lives/business-cards-japan-many-rules-easily-often-broken/#.W9fDRGjYqUk
>>

>how even sailors carry business cards and have their own nomenclature.
>A typical sailor’s card will say “S/Y Dugong” followed by the make and length of the boat. “S/Y” is the abbreviation for “sailing yacht” and “Dugong” would be the name of the boat. “S/V” is also used, meaning “sailing vessel. At least in these cases, the polite comment is always the same: “”Nice boat!”
lol
>>
When is the next run?
>>
>tmw talking about card holders effectively killed a quest
>>
>>3015721
Maybe the qm got sucked into the rabbit hole of Japanese etiquette.
>>
>>3016064
Speaking of rabbit holes, anyone for calling Alicia "looking glass" if we have to talk about her ever? We're bound to run into her some time, so some codename or other would rock.
>>
>>3016064
You know there are still Schools of Etiquette? Like, specific styles of protocol that specify how you stand, how you carry yourself, how you sit up and sit down.
>>
>>3019958
That's the reason why they have population problems, too much protocol bullshit going on.
>>
>>3020122
No, the population problem is due to too much work, not enough pay, cost of living being too high, and everyone out for themselves and thinking only of their own happiness.
>>
nice quest
>>
>>3020122
It's because they know everything goes to shit if they stop being single. They keep on working long hours, don't get to keep any of their money because the wife is in charge and gives them an allowance instead of them being allowed to enjoy their hobbies, don't even get to have a wife that's faithful because asians cheat like mad, and you get stuck in this until the day you die.
>>
>>3022552
And don't forget what it's like from the women's viewpoint.
Get stuck at home all day except to go buy groceries, expected to shut up and devote everything to the family and nothing for yourself, sure you control the finances but you can't do anything with it, aside from matters of household finance your opinion doesn't matter, and you don't get a husband that can satisfy you sexually or that's faithful since he regards you as a frigid bitch because it's your accounting that's keeping the family in the black.
>>
So has it been long enough to classify this quest as on life support?
>>
>>3025796
If so, then it's too bad, I really like the setting we've been presented, and the characters show promise for interesting story development. Plus we haven't gotten to say "I told you so." to that one lady that punched us out.
