"Hey John, wanna go campin' with us?" Cody asks.

Muscular, tall and athletic, he looks like a stereotypical douche jock from a bad teen movie. Sometimes looks can be deceiving, but Cody’s not a guy with much hidden depth. He’s the quarterback of your high school football team and loves bragging about it.

“Come on, it’s gonna be a lotta fun!” Veronica winks.

Blonde, long-legged and curvy at exactly the right places, Veronica’s the most popular cheerleader in school. She’s dating Cody now, but has a reputation for being a slut and cheating on all her ex-boyfriends.

“Who else is coming? You raise an eyebrow.

“Nathan, Roger and uhh… Laura?” Cody replies.

“Laurie,” Veronica corrects him, “You know, the nerd with glasses.”

Laurie is a petite, mousey girl with brown hair. She doesn’t have too many friends and keeps to herself. Veronica probably keeps her around as a ‘friend’ for her notes from math class. Laurie’s bag is always stuffed with thick books, which may explain her poor eyesight.

Nathan is the only black guy in class. He’s on the football team with Cody, which kinda explains their friendship and why he’s coming to the trip. Nathan and Cody sometimes get in fights, so there may be an undercurrent of hostility beneath their supposed friendship.

Roger is a bit of an oddball. Tall, skinny with shaggy beard, he always shows up in class wearing a faded green t-shirt too big for him and loose red pants that might have been cool in the 60s. He sounds perpetually stoned… though he does have the best weed.

“So you comin’ or not?” Cody asks again.

>Sure man, thanks for inviting me. (fist bump Cody)

>Ya, sounds fun. (wink back at Veronica)

>Sorry, got plans this weekend. (turn to leave)

“Sure man, thanks for inviting me,” You bump fists with Cody.

“Great! Always knew you’re a cool dude,” Cody replies.

“So John, can you bring your dad’s car?” Veronica sounds flirty, “Cody’s car got a busted AC.”

That explains a lot of things. Cody and Veronica want to go camping, but not deal with a busted AC. And you're one of the few people in class who can drive and have access to a car.

>Okay, but remember you owe me. (wink back at Veronica)

>Okay, but only cause I like you guys. (nod at Cody)

>Bring your car too, six people in one car will be cramped, Veronica can ride with me if it gets too hot in your car. (reply to Cody)

"Okay, but only cause I like you guys," You nod at Cody.

"You are a fuckin' life saver, John." Cody punches your shoulder playfully.

"So where are we going exactly?" You rub your shoulder.

"Cody's uncle owns a cabin near Red Lake," Veronica replies, "Used to be a summer camp there, but got closed down. No one goes there now. So we'll have plenty of place to have fun. Smoke some weed, go skinny dipping and all that."

>Wait, isn't that where that serial killer used to dump his bodies? I know it's been years, but they never found him, did they?

>Heard some girl went nuts couple years ago and killed all the other campers. She is in a nuthouse now, right?

>Wait, isn't that lake haunted? Heard even the fish looks weird... like fucking aliens. Something in the water I guess.

>Thought there was a clan of inbred redneck hillbillies living there? Creepy pig farmers and other weirdos.

>Wait, isn't that where those cultists used to sacrifice kids? Something to do with voodoo or some other spooky shit.

>Heard that place used to be an old Indian burial ground. Like the soil is cursed by their spirits or something.

“Trust me, it’s gonna be fun,” Cody says.

"So let's meet up tomorrow morning, 'k?" Veronica smiles.

“Ya, see you guys then.” You reply.

Veronica gives you one last wink before leaving, you ignore it and make your way home.

******

You’re not the outdoors type and haven’t gone camping in years. You’re not as athletic as the jocks or as smart as the nerds.

How will you prepare for the trip?

>Just bring the regular stuff – food, water, flashlight, lighter etc.

>Take your big brother’s old hunting knife – wait, is that thing even legal to carry?

>Secretly ’borrow’ your dad’s handgun, who knows what you might run into.

>Bring a bible and crucifix – never hurts to be faithful.

Camping is cool and all, but it can get boring real fast. Maybe you can buy some drugs to make the trip more exciting.

The only drug you've ever done is weed, if that even counts as drug these days. Maybe you should loosen up more.

******

Your neighbor is a weird Russian guy named Boris. He keeps a low profile, but you know that he moves some pretty hardcore drugs.

"Marihuana is for little babies," Boris snorts, "You try the real stuff, friend. I have everything you need. Candy, hardball, molly, blue sky, angel dust... you just name it, friend. Or you want something to put in girl’s drink and bring her home?"

"Not looking for roofies, Boris, I just want to have some fun when out camping," You ask, “What can you get me for a twenty?”

"Nothing worth time, friend," Boris shakes his head, "But I got some new pills from home. Cousin call it Babayka. Good drug. Can give you discount."

"This isn't anything like that Krokodil thing, right?" You feel uncomfortable, "Would hate to end up losing my legs to some flesh eating disease."

"Na, friend, this is government stuff," Boris replies, "Very safe. Maybe make you strong like Superman! Have fun with girl, yes?"

"I don’t know, Boris,” You hand him the twenty and take the black pills. Unsure if you will actually use them or not.

******

You feel agitated. Maybe you’ve been watching too many horror movies.

On a whim, you check the cupboard where your dad keeps his handgun. You’ve never fired a bullet in your life, but feel safer with the gun in hand.

After some hesitation, you decide to ’borrow’ your dad’s handgun, who knows what you might run into while out camping.

You meet up with Cody, Veronica, Nathan, Roger and Laurie the next morning. Cody’s wearing a red football jacket, his arm wrapped around Veronica.

“Your family must be loaded if you drive this,” Nathan looks at your car approvingly, “Way better than the rust bucket Cody drives.”

“It’s his dad’s ride, not his,” Cody mutters.

“Still pretty cool,” Veronica’s wearing a tight sweater that accentuates her curves, her miniskirt doing little to cover her thick thighs.

“Wish we could take my dog with us,” Roger sounds as stoned as ever, but you notice that he seems a little jumpier than usual.

“What does your dad do exactly?” Laurie asks in a low voice. She’s dressed more modestly compared to her friend.

>He’s a doctor, wants me to go to medical school after graduation, even forced me to take first aid lessons.

>He’s an engineer, always tells me to pay more attention to electronics and tinker with stuff to see how they work.

>He works for the government, on secret projects he can’t even share with us.

>He does some ‘import-export’ business, deals with some real shady people. Let’s leave it at that.

>We are old money, great-great grandpa used to be a plantation owner, owned hundreds of slaves.

"We are old money, great-great grandpa used to be a plantation owner," You reply, "Made a fortune from the cotton fields. I think he owned hundreds of slaves."

“So literal blood money,” Nathan looks pissed, no longer impressed with your dad’s car. Laurie doesn’t look too pleased either.

“Hey lighten up, that shit happened like ages ago,” Veronica smirks, “Not John’s fault that his ancestors owned yours.”

"Ya, it's not like they could've cursed his bloodline or something." Cody laughs too.

“Whatever,” Nathan doesn’t even look at you as he takes the backseat. Laurie sits next to him, you see them talking about something.

You take the driver’s seat, wondering if you should have kept your mouth shut in front of Nathan. It’s a couple hours’ drive to the cabin and you hope to reach there before dark.

>Ask Cody to take the seat next to you, pass the time chatting about sports or something.

You stay silent and wait for one of the others to sit next to you. None of them are exactly your 'type' and you feel little interest in socializing with them. You're starting to regret coming to this trip already.

Cody and Veronica sit together behind you and Roger takes the empty seat next to you. After some time, he starts talking about dumb conspiracy theories.

"The government’s trying to control our minds, man,” Roger keeps talking even though you ignore him, “You ever heard of MKUltra? Fucked up what they did to Kaczynski. And that was in the 60s, they must have gotten way better drugs by now.”

“Uh-huh,” You keep your eye on the road, not paying attention to the ramblings.

“The Russians experimented with mind altering drugs too,” Roger continues, “In the 40s, they kept five guys awake for fifteen days with some fucked up drug cocktail.”

“What happened after fifteen days?” You ask trying to hide your lack of interest.

“They went mad and killed everyone, ate some of them too,” Roger replies, “Russian sleepers are hiding all around us, man, all they need is a trigger like that to go berserk.”

Roger keeps rambling about Nazi human experiments, chemtrails, genetic memory and other pseudo-science conspiracy theories.

You nod and pretend to listen, hoping that you'll reach the cabin before dark. The road is bumpy, and you have to be careful as you drive.

You reach the cabin hours before dark, without any accident or running into any creepy hitchhikers.

The place feels desolate. The trees look dead or are stunted things with no leaves. The cabin is in okay shape, but you doubt anyone has spent a night here in years.

"Wow, your uncle must really hate you," Nathan quips at Cody, "Sending you camping to a place like this."

"Shut up," Cody grumbles.

"This place isn't all that bad," Laurie says, "We just need to clean it up a bit."

"No signal." Veronica ignores them and checks her phone, "Can't even call someone to tell we found the place... argh!"

“Great, so we’re stuck here and lost to civilization,” Nathan says, “Anyway I’m gonna go look for some dry firewood, any of you wanna come help?”

“Should check up on the old summer camp near Red Lake first,” Cody says, “Might find some old supplies.”

"I'm gonna take a step back and chill, guys." Roger says, "Don't feel so good."

"I'll come," You tell Nathan. Who just nods and starts walking without uttering a word.

The two of you walk in silence. The woods look ominous, like something is watching you from the distance.

You must be more tired than you realize, the mind plays weird tricks when someone is exhausted.

You feel awkward about the earlier conversation and don't know if you should apologize to Nathan or not.

>"No offense, man, but slavery wasn't all that bad. If it weren't for people like my great-great grandpa, your people would still be starving in Africa."

>"You know great-great grandpa treated slaves pretty well. I mean he whipped the lazy ones, but that's just part of running a business. You get what I'm saying, right?"

Thing is, John didn't attack anyone. He stated a fact about his ancestor. Can't fault a guy for that. I think the most sensible thing we can say, with regards to mending this bad blood with Nathan, is to make sure he knows we don't agree with slavery or white supremacy: people are just people.

"Sorry about what I said back there, man. I'm not really good with small talk, end up saying some dumb shit sometimes. Just wanna make sure that we’re still cool," You hesitantly apologize. Nathan is both taller and stronger than you, he’s also on the high school football team, way more athletic than you can ever hope to be. Getting in a fight with him here can end badly for you.

“We’re cool, so long as you don’t keep rubbing that slavery shit in my face,” Nathan replies curtly. He sounds more annoyed than angry.

"Hey, if it's any consolation, I'm not cool with the whole slavery thing either. Don't know if that means anything coming from a white boy," You respond.

“You are cool with living off blood money though,” Nathan sights, “Then again, can’t really blame you for the shit your great-gramps did. Wouldn’t be fair.”

You work in silence after that. You barely know Nathan and you’re far from friends, so you don’t really mind the lack of conversation. But you do feel glad that you haven’t said something stupid and gotten your ass beaten by him.

When a fight breaks out in urban areas, other people can break it apart. But if a fight breaks out in a remote place like this, things can turn ugly real fast. No one will call 911 if you shout for help. There won’t be any police car or ambulance, even if you bleed to death.

Still feels like something's watching you. You keep turning back to stare at the woods, but don’t see any animals. That uneasy feeling doesn’t leave until you return to the cabin.

in a slasher film, not volunteering on your own terms gets you killed later. don't run from problems; change the paradigm and eliminate the problem.
>>
>>3010418
Depending on if the QM wants us to play to the tropes or play against them.

Should we act realistically and attempt to keep ourselves alive, or should we play as if we were an actual character in a slasher movie? I'd prefer the latter personally, but it really depends on the kind of quest and tone the QM is going for.
>>
>>3009739
>You girls stay here. Nathan and I’ll go check the summer camp, see if we can find him.
It's too early for anyone to die anyways.
>>
>>3010427
er ask the qm?

Cryptid, what do you expect of us as players? Do you want us to play into slasher troupes or do we play as we are?

Because if it were me, I'd persuade everyone to search for Cody. We'd all stand shoulder to shoulder like people do during search parties (it's called a grid search) to thoroughly scope out the area. My secondary reason for this is that if John felt someone was staring at him, this search method will keep a group of people together and therefore likely deter any individual from trying something. Of course, it all depends on how much control John can impose on his group: if they scatter in the middle of the forest we're all fucked.
>>
>>3010432
The setting is inspired by Slasher movie tropes and teen movie character archetypes (e.g. the jock, the slut, the nerd, the virgin, the stoner etc).

But it's up to you guys how you want to play the main character, since he's more of a blank slate.

He could turn out to be a self-serving pragmatist, a racist rich snob, a hopeless romantic, a competent leader or something else entirely. Just play him as how you would try to act if you were in shoes.
>>
>>3010448
Will his own capabilities adapt to our play style? I haven't done anything really "me" because thus far John has been portrayed as a push-over. Push-overs don't have the credibility or charisma to lead others, so anything I'd do wouldn't work with John.
>>
>>3010464
Vote how you would act if you were John. If you think he's a push-over, then act that way. Or if you think he's a cautious manipulator pretending to be a push-over, then act that way instead.

The things we have established so far are - (1) We are a rich kid from an old slave owning family; (2) We are not as athletic as the jocks, nor as smart as the nerds, we are average on both abilities; (3) We can drive a car, so we are somewhat competent for a teenager; (4) We have a handgun and some mystery drugs we bought from a shady dealer with us; (5) We are not over confrontational and not interested in picking a fight with a guy stronger than us etc.

Knowing these things, we can play the role of John and keep filling the blanks. The more decisions we make, the more we'll learn about his character, his skills and capabilities, his flaws etc.

It's up to the players to decide if John's the kind of guy who would try to organize a search party for Cody, or if he would go alone to look for him, or if he would stay in the cabin for now.

okay okay I can work with this

Cody is either spoiled, self-entitled rich kid who tries to fit in by using his possessions OR he's a street-smart kid who isn't necessarily knowledgeable like nerds but is cunning, solitary, and subtle

the latter means he's deliberately but just barely keeping up the image of a push-over

watcha think anons?
>>
>>3010497
I don't think John's a pushover. He's just smart enough not to go full confederate slaver in front of a black guy. More of a pragmatist than anything.

Or maybe he actually felt sorry about what he said, dunno.....
>>
>>3010497
>>3010504
To be fair, bringing up that his family owned slaves right in front of a black guy the first time you meet him is a pretty fucking stupid thing to do in the first place.
>>
>>3010504
I wasn't referring to his interaction wit Nathan when I called John a push-over. I was referring to all of his interactions with the others. In general, people don't seem to like him, and Cody only invited John because Veronica wanted to use John's car since Cody's ac is busted. John responded to this with a

>Okay, but only cause I like you guys. (nod at Cody)

I mean damn. John's spineless. He lets himself be used by others, he's desperate for approval, and he can't even stand up for himself when he gets shit for something he isn't responsible for.

Ya that was dumb. Our relationship with Laurie took a hit too.

>>3010511
>John's spineless. He lets himself be used by others, he's desperate for approval, and he can't even stand up for himself when he gets shit for something he isn't responsible for.
Ok I'm convinced. Good character analysis mate.

>>3010407
Changing my vote to this
>>
>>3010528
Thanks. But also: a spineless main character for a quest is obsolete. Spineless characters are reactive rather than proactive, which means they're boring as hell.

So I'd like to change the circumstances we're in. Are we playing a spineless character, or are we playing a character who is acting spineless?

Or, to be a little creative, are we playing a socially inept, anti-social (aka sociopath) who can do things others can't. Like hunt the serial killer?

How do we make this fun? Any thoughts?
>>
>>3010507
He needs to know his place.
>>
>>3010511
Is he really though? What if he's like me? What if he's an introvert who keeps mostly to himself and who prefers to be alone but when with other people prioritizes happiness of others subconsciously/consciously analysing behaviours of others to select the best responses to make them happy but eventually getting tired of their bullshit and using his knowledge to push their buttons just right? Don't just make these assumptions. Besides people change under stressful circumstances
>>
>>3010564
If he were an introvert who prioritizes the happiness of others he wouldn't have been insensitive enough to declare that his great-great-grandfather owned slaves, and then have enough backbone to immediately clear the animosity up after Nathan and Laurie revealed that they were offended. He hasn't even talked to Laurie about this yet—only Nathan.

And what you described with 'using his knowledge to push their buttons' can be likened to emotional blackmail. From what John has demonstrated thus far, he neither has the emotional sensitivity nor the emotional intelligence for that. He has zero dirt on anyone in the group and he's a socially inept, emotionally insensitive push-over.

Not to come off as arrogant, but I make educated assumptions.

“I'll go find him. It'd be good to have a second set of eyes though. Any volunteers?” You ask, hoping either Nathan or Roger will join you.

You don’t really think Cody is in any trouble, he’s athletic enough to fight off several people and there aren’t any wolves or other predators in these parts of the woods. But if he’s hurt his legs stepping in a ditch or something, it’ll be good to have a second pair of hands to support him.

You also feel a general sense of unease, like something was watching you when you were out gathering firewood with Nathan. But it’s probably nothing. You’re just tired and your mind is playing tricks on you, making you nervous and jittery. Still you do not look forward to going into the woods alone.

“I’ll come with you,” Veronica surprises you by volunteering, “Cody’s just being a dumbass, y’know, playing a stupid prank on us. But I’ll help you look for him.”

“You wanna come, Nathan?” You ask, “Could use your muscles if we get in any trouble.”

“Nah, we shouldn’t leave Laurie alone,” Nathan replies, “And Roger is too high to be any help.”

“Okay, stay safe. We’ll be back as soon as we find Cody,” You are a little disappointed by his reply, but don’t push against it. Both Nathan and Laurie are single, maybe they’ve struck a friendship or considering a relationship. None of your business though.

“Hey John, wanna take a detour?” Veronica smirks as the two of you go deeper in the woods, “Maybe we can have some fun, just the two of us.”

“Aren’t you worried about Cody?” You ask, feeling a little uncomfortable as the blonde cheerleader motions you to follow her to a bushy area obscured from the main path.

“Cody’s fine,” Veronica waves her hand dismissively, “And I’ve seen you staring at my tits, John, it’s so obvious that you want to fuck me. I mean, you barely know us. And camping is so darn boring! You wouldn’t have come on this trip unless you were hoping to get laid.”

“You’re dating Cody, it would be a fucked up thing to do to him,” You reply hesitantly as Veronica starts unbuttoning her tight sweater, revealing more of her considerable cleavage.

“He doesn’t need to know,” Veronica moves closer and puts her hand on the front of your pants, “Cody hates you, you know? He’s jealous of how rich you are, how much better your car is than his. He’d steal your lunch money and throw you in the dumpster if it was the 80s. But now he has to fake smile and pretend he likes you.”

You stay silent as Veronica caresses your dick over your pants. You don’t know how to respond. Why did you come here with them? Knowing they’re just using you for your dad’s car, when you barely know any of them. They would never be doing this if you weren’t as rich as you are.

“You’re getting hard,” Veronica smirks seductively, “You can play with my tits if you want. Or we can go into that bush and you can fuck my brains out. We’ll just tell the others we got lost while out searching for Cody. No one ever needs to know that we fucked.”

>Sorry, but I’m not really interested in fucking sluts.

>This isn’t time for this, Veronica, Cody could be hurt somewhere.

>Okay, I admit that you’re hot and I’ve been dreaming of fucking you. Just don’t expect this to be anything more than a fling.

>I’m not looking for casual sex. Maybe we can date if you break up with Cody.

>Your boyfriend’s a douche. That’s the only reason I won’t feel guilty about fucking you behind his back.

******

You and Veronica walk in silence, following the dirt path from the cabin to the abandoned summer camp. After a few minutes, you smell a weird metallic stench, like dried blood or something like that.

“Do you smell that?” You ask Veronica, your hand unconsciously reaching for the gun hidden in your pants.

“Smell what?” Veronica raises her eyebrow.

You motion her to stay silent and cautiously approach the source of the stench.

You follow the metallic stench, but it abruptly disappears as you get closer to the source. You feel confused and your sense of unease continues to grow. You wonder if you’re having some kind of a nervous breakdown, sensing things that aren’t really there.

“You okay, John? You look kinda pale,” Veronica sounds concerned. Her reputation portrays her as a shallow promiscuous teenager who cares little about others and nothing you’ve seen of her so far suggests otherwise. So it feels a little weird to see her concerned about your well-being.

Before you can reply, you hear heavy footsteps in the distance. You turn around and see Cody walking towards you from the direction of the abandoned summer camp.

“I hope I did not scare you,” Cody says with a friendly smile on his face, “I had unfortunately gotten lost on my way back from the lake.”

“Glad to see you’re okay, man,” You feel a weight lifting off your shoulders, “We were worried you got hurt or something.”

“My apologies for causing you concern,” Cody smiles again as he puts his arm on Veronica possessively, “Trust me, I am fine.”

******

You feel awkward as Cody kisses Veronica lustfully, forcing his tongue in her mouth and grabbing ahold of her hips. You know that he was too far away to overhear the conversation you had with Veronica, but you still feel a little tense about the whole thing. Cody smirks when he catches you staring and you quickly turn around.

The three of you walk back to the cabin, you leading the way with Cody and Veronica following you from behind. You overhear them talking about something. Cody sounds self-assured and confident, while Veronica sounds wary.

******

“What the fuck took you so long?” Nathan says when he sees Cody, “Laurie was worried as hell, thought you drowned or some shit.”

“I am sorry, Laurie,” Cody sounds apologetic, “I should have returned earlier. But alas, I had forgotten to check the time.”

“Thought you said you got lost?” You raise an eyebrow.

“I had gotten lost after I left,” Cody explains, “Even before that, I had spent a considerable amount of time confined in that camp.”

“Uh-huh,” You take his word for it, too tired to ask more questions. You’ve been on edge the whole day, maybe you should call it a night and get some sleep.

>Call it a night and go to sleep, keep your gun on you just in case.

>Try to sneak off and have a little fun with Veronica.

>Smoke some weed with Roger and shoot the shit.

Skinwalker Cody doesn't use the same vocabulary or speech patterns as actual Cody. Tell Veronica this and tell her we smelled blood before Skinwalker Cody arrived. We suspect the Cody that returned with us is not the Cody who we arrived in this camp with.

You're correct in that he's acting weird, but I'm under the impression he's trying to sound "rich" since he's jealous of us. We should still bring it up but probably not worth shooting him yet.
>>
>>3010963
I considered this but quickly dismissed it.

“Trust me, I am fine.”

While stressing each word is a little awry. You do not insist "Trust ME" when people haven't forced their concerns onto you. Neither John nor Veronica fawned over whether he's okay or not. Therefore, Skinwalker Cody's line served a different role. Psychology 101 all speech is action or goal-oriented. His line was more a command than anything.

>Cody sounds self-assured and confident, while Veronica sounds wary.
From what we've seen of veronica, she's smarter than she lets on. and her concern for John at the start of the post reveals that she has a developed sense of emotional intelligence. emotional intelligence is what helps you pick up on irregularities in behavior. veronica was WARY. I trust her; she would've noticed first if he were just acting out of insecurity. remember, she was the one who first told us he's insecure about us being rich.

besides, "Cody" used his new vocabulary a little too well. that wasn't an impression.
>>
>>3010963
I doubt it. He's got no reason to suck up to us since he can kick our ass and he fucking hates us if his slut gf is to be believed. If anything he'd be making fun of us. Maybe he's stoned and trying to act cool and rich to show us up for having a great car?

You feel tired and sleepy, but there’s something definitely off about Cody. You keep an eye on him as he talks to Nathan and Laurie, grinning the entire time.

“The hell’s wrong with Cody?” You ask Veronica once the two of you are alone, “He’s talking like an old guy. ’My apologies?’ I never heard him speak like this before.”

“I know, he’s acting weird,” Veronica nods her head, “Argh… It’s like he’s a totally different guy. But at least he’s treating me better than before, so I shouldn’t really complain.”

“I smelled blood before Cody came back,” You can’t stop your voice form shaking, you feel utterly terrified, “I think... the Cody that returned with us is not the Cody who we arrived in this camp with.”

“Dude, you’re joking, right?” Veronica laughs nervously, “Not even Roger’s high enough to come up with something this nuts. Think you should get some sleep, John, you’re starting to sound crazy.”

“There’s no way the real Cody would ever talk like that,” You momentarily consider shooting Cody if worse comes to worst, but quickly bury that thought, “What do you think happened, Veronica?”

“I dunno, maybe he hit his head or something,” Veronica sounds like she is trying to convince herself as well as you, “Or maybe he found some really good weed in that camp, got high and now thinks he’s back in English class. Or maybe he’s just pulling our legs, some dumb prank.”

“Did his skin feel cold?” You steal a glance at Cody, who seems to be joking around with Nathan and Roger.

“John, this is getting creepy,” Veronica sighs, “Cody’s acting weird, I know. But that doesn’t mean he’s some kinda ghost or something. And no, his skin didn’t feel cold when we kissed.”

“Make sure you're never alone with Cody," You warn Veronica. You know she has her own suspicions, but reaffirming them and warning her may prompt her to actually act on those suspicions.

“Okay, you sound really creepy now,” Veronica shakes her head and takes a step back, “Listen to what you’re saying, dude, you’re asking me never to be alone with my boyfriend. Y’know Cody can be an asshole sometimes, but it’s not like he’s dangerous. You’re acting like an obsessed possessive stalker at this point!”

You feel frustrated, not sure what more you can say to convince her. You think back on your earlier conversations with her and her attempts at seducing you. Maybe you can draw on those to persuade her and keep her away from Cody tonight.

That's not a good way to confirm anything. Skinwalker Cody is possessive. Cody is jealous. Most people can hardly tell the difference between the two.

And "no strings attached" means no sex. Plus, if we fail to pass the DC for that choice, her idea that we're an obsessive stalker will become cemented. There's too much to lose with that option.

Great.

Though I do think she's a good person...character...? I noticed earlier that she seems to care more about being treated right like when she mentioned how skinwalker treats her better than Cody. It seems she wants to be valued as who she is but at some point down the road convinced herself that her body will get her that, or at least an imitation (which is better than nothing). You also wrote how everyone had hidden depths in the first post, then stated except for Cody and voila the dude's the first to die. So I'm guessing all the survivors thus far have some hidden depth?

"Before tonight, I thought you were a shallow person,” You decide to tell her the truth, “You're not. You're a good person. I'm not asking you to believe me; humor me and just play it safe, okay?"

“Okay, I’ll play it safe,” Veronica sounds uncertain, “Guess I’ll tell Cody that I’ve got a headache and need to sleep alone tonight. I still think you’re being way too paranoid, John, but... thanks for looking out for me. Not really used to having people worrying about me, not like this I mean.”

“Just stay safe, Veronica,” You breathe a sigh of relief. Maybe she’s right, you’re just tired and not thinking straight. But you still feel relieved knowing that she’ll stay away from Cody. You don’t know why, but you have a sinking feeling that Veronica narrowly escaped something bad tonight.

******

You wake up next morning, feeling a lot more refreshed after the rest. The events from last night feel like a bad dream and you feel a little embarrassed about how terrified you had felt. You feel surprised when you see Veronica sitting next to you in her pajamas.

“Wish I could let you sleep longer,” Veronica sighs, “But there are two things you need to know asap. First, Cody’s gone. Ran off last night when we were all sleeping I’m guessing. Second… well it’ll be better if you see it for yourself.”

******

“Fuck! My dad’s gonna kill me!” You groan after Veronica leads you to your dad’s car. All four tires have been slashed and the engine has been sabotaged, “Damn it, Cody!”

“What the hell happened last night?” Roger sounds uncharacteristically sober for a change, “Did you guys have a fight or something? What did I miss?”

“Wow, Cody really let the whole jealousy thing go to his head,” Nathan joins you soon, with Laurie following him silently, “It’ll take hours to walk back to town, longer if we get lost along the way.”

“So we’re stuck in this shit indefinitely,” Veronica states aloud what others have been thinking silently, “No phone signal, so can’t call for help either. Argh… Cody really fucked us over.”

> Ask Nathan to come with you and search for Cody. Beat the shit out of the guy once you find him.

>Take your handgun and search for Cody alone, shoot him dead if you have to.

No offense Roger, but most of the time you're high as fuck."

Oh and play off the strange schedule to wild animals. Convince them that it's best to remain alert during the night so we can deal with nocturnal predators. The canopy of the woods isnt thick so we'll have the moonlight to guide us. Plus, four set of eyes during the night, because its hard to see, is more useful than four set of eyes during the day. Tell them that the two lookouts during the day can keep their eyes open for local hunters or whatever for help.

For now, since it's morning, we'll travel for the first half of the day and begin sleep the second half. Then we wake just as the sun sets and we get moving again. After the schedule should be as described at the beginning of the post.

Veronica didn't take that well. They will refute this because it scares them. For now, keep it under wraps. We should continue operating with the knowledge that he is some kind of murderous skinwalker and lead the others accordingly.

The most reasonable course of action is to start walking back to town while it's daylight. Whatever is going on, you have a handgun and light.
Buuuut, I feel that's a little meta.
>Talk to Roger about how Cody was acting weird last night and the Russian mystery drugs.
And maybe
>Pursue Veronica more seriously since Cody is no longer around to interrupt you.
>>
>>3011728
not so meta. I mean really, we're the only one who believes we know what's going on and the others would dismiss truth because it scares them.

we're just executing our moral responsibility. earlier, John insisted he and Veronica keep searching even though it was a great chance to lay the hottest girl he knows. now, he's carrying on that sense of greater good.

also, I'd like to think that after realizing Veronica has some depth, John respects and find some camaraderie in her. on one hand, you have a girl who everyone thinks is a shallow slut and nothing more. on the other, you have a boy who everyone thinks is a spineless rich kid. but people had hidden depths. don't get me wrong, I'm not proposing some double trouble duo crap or some shitty romance YA plot. I'm just saying maybe there's something more than just superficial lust here now.

>>3011682
No one in the post seems stressed out. There's just kinda "Cody's an asshole".
>>
>>3011751
I meant that in a scary movie plot, the last thing anyone tries is going straight back. They always try to fix the car, call the police, hide in the house, etc. Unless you're talking Cabin in the Woods, but that didn't fly so good.

And again, maybe getting some bearing on the situation would be a good course of action. Roger's bullshit might be fueled by marijuana, but he actually might have some idea of what to do in a situation like this.

Problem is, there's literally nothing for us to go back to. We don't have the resources to repair the tires or engine and there's absolutely no point in waiting anything out. Moreover, as far as they're concerned, there's nothing wrong with Cody aside from his "jealousy".

As an argument against the hike being meta, right now our scenario can be thematically described as the Sheperd vs. the wolf. The others are our sheep, and like sheep they're not entirely aware of the danger. Like when we looked for Cody while no one else really cared, John has shown he considers the wellbeing of others as his responsibility.

You could even argue that it's a quality his great great grandfather shared. I mean the dude had way too much slaves. I won't presume to know if he did it solely for wealth or of it's a blend of greed and the moral belief that he was superior and therefore had the obligation to 'lead' the more primitive race (called the White Man's Burden), but perhaps John has something similar. Just not so prejudice and maybe more well-intentioned.

"It's fine. What matters is that we're all okay," You tell Veronica and lightly squeeze her hand to reassure her, letting go before anyone looks your way. You silently decide to pursue her more seriously, since Cody is no longer around to interrupt you.

“Thanks for warning me last night, John,” Veronica sighs, “You were right, Cody’s really gone full psycho! I mean he’s always been a douche, but this is too fucked even for him. Argh… sorry for what happened to your dad’s car, I really shouldn’t have asked you for it.”

“Not your fault, only one to blame here is Cody,” You reassure her and turn to study how the others are doing.

******

Nathan has a scowl on his face and you have no doubts that he would punch Cody if he was still here. Laurie looks pensive, occasionally talking in whispers to Nathan.

Roger seems confused, like he just woke up from a daze and not yet sure what’s real anymore. Maybe you should explain to him what happened.

“Cody was acting weird last night,” You tell Roger, “Speaking in a completely different manner, using phrases neither me nor Veronica ever heard him use before. I know it sounds crazy, but I’m not even sure that it was even him that came back.”

“I get what you mean, dude,” Roger replies in a whisper, “Cody was actually a Russian sleeper agent, right? They activated his code and now he’s swimming back to Siberia.”

“That’s… that’s not what I meant,” You shake your head, trying to explain things to the resident conspiracy theorist may have been a mistake, “But speaking of Russians, have you ever heard of a drug called ‘Babyaka’?”

“I don’t think so,” Roger looks thoughtful, "But there’s been a rumor going around in conspiracy circles for decades, about a top secret Russian military project from the 70s. I think it might’ve been called ‘Project Babyaka’.”

“The dealer did say it was government stuff,” You thought back to the black pills hidden in your pocket, “Any idea what the Russians did in that project?”

“Experimented with drugs mostly,” Roger answers, “You know, stimulants to make soldiers stronger and have more stamina. Stuff to keep them awake for days and heighten their senses. Could be that some of the stimulants were later smuggled out as sex drugs.”

“Uh-huh,” You nod, “Did the drugs actually work? Give the soldiers super strength or stamina?”

“Can’t really say, the Russians wiped everything from their records,” Roger replies, “Maybe the scientists fucked up and they had to bury the project. Might have been like what happened in the 40s, human rights violations or some other mess.”

You wonder if there's any truth to the rumors or if it's just another urban legend. But before you have the chance to continue the conversation, you notice Nathan and Laurie walking your way.

>>3012534
“So what’s the plan?” Nathan asks, “I looked at the car, there's no way we can repair it ourselves. No phone signal, so we can’t call for help either. The supplies should last us a week, but our families might send help before that. Do we hike back to town or stay here?”

“It took us hours to get here by car, hiking back will take a lot longer,” Veronica joins the conversation, “Even if we start walking now, it’ll already be tomorrow before we get back to anything resembling civilization. And that’s hoping we don’t get lost along the way.”

“Cody and I are athletes, we can endure the trip,” Nathan replies, “Maybe John can too. But there’s no way Laurie or even Roger can walk the entire day. We’ll need to take breaks, rest and recuperate our strength along the way.”

“Maybe we should just stay here?” Roger suggests, “Chill for a while, smoke some weed. Maybe search the old camp for supplies. Experiment with some new drugs, if we find any. Our parents will send help eventually... unless we’ve already been replaced by the Russian clones. Fuck!”

“Calm down, dude,” Veronica shakes her head, “But ya, it could be days before our parents send help, depending on what Cody tells people once he gets back to town.”

“How about we stay here for three days?” Nathan suggests, “Have some fun like we had planned. If no one comes to find us, we pack our bags and start the journey home. Or we can split up, John and I trek back to town and come back with help.”

>Start the journey right now
>Start the journey after the sun sets today

Shit is serious. Half an hour to get packed and ready to go.

>Stay together
No one is to wander more than 10 foot away from one another.

>Walk at a pace comfortable for Laurie
You are only as fast as your slowest man.

>Travel during the day, sleep at night
Cody is active during the night, need people to keep night watch, two at a time.

>Tell others of your suspicions about Cody
Bring up the fact that he sabotaged our car and left in the middle of the night. Don't accuse him of anything, but let the seeds of doubt be sowed.

>Start the journey now
>Stay together

A pace for Laurie will grant us Nathan's cooperation. And we are only as strong as our weakest link. Plus if we move too quick we tire ourselves and therefore render ourselves vulnerable to skinwalker's attack.

Begin immediately to make up for the Laurie pace and to mitigate damage.

I’d say travel at night because that’s when Cody is active, if we’re all up and aware he’ll have a harder time sneaking up on us. Leaving two people to stand guard at night is too big of a risk, they could fall asleep, or one goes to take a piss, or anything.

I support staying silent because they all know that Cody is dangerous, they saw what he did to the car for no reason. Trying to convince a group of teens that monsters are real is just going to make us look as crazy as they currently think Cody is.
>>
>>3012578
Other than what other Anon explained (thank you) four set of watching eyes is excessive when there's daylight out. Four set of eyes when it's dark is useful as our vision will be hindered anyway. We NEED to see him coming and we need to be alert and be prepared to react accordingly.

We can play off the odd schedule to wild animals, as I explained in the post which I linked in my other post. Or just...here:

"Everyone pack your bags,” You decide to take the lead, “We're hiking back to civilization. We're going to mix it up: we travel at night—close together—so we can see him coming when he does, and we'll camp and sleep during the day with two lookouts—one of which will not be Roger. No offense Roger, but most of the time you're high as fuck."

“Don’t you think you’re going a tad overboard?” Nathan raises an eyebrow, “It’s just Cody, not like he’s a serial killer or some shit.”

“Remember that he sabotaged our car and left in the middle of the night,” You keep silent about your true suspicions regarding Cody, “It’ll be safer if we stay together, Nathan. Let’s walk at a pace comfortable for Laurie, take breaks when someone is tired and leave this place behind.”

“Why travel at night though?” Nathan asks, accepting your reasoning behind the other points.

“There might be wild animals out,” You reply, “You know, coyotes and stuff. It’s better to remain alert during the night so we can deal with nocturnal predators. The canopy of the woods isn’t thick, so we'll have the moonlight to guide us. Plus, four set of eyes during the night, because it’s hard to see, is more useful than four set of eyes during the day. The two lookouts during the day can keep their eyes open for local hunters or whatever for help.”

“Damn you gave a lot of thought to this,” Nathan says, “Still think it’s going overboard for fuckin' Cody. Is there something you aren’t telling us, John?”

“Cody isn't his right mind,” You reply, “If you see him alert the others immediately. And Nathan, I know you're mad, but don't charge. Warn us if you see him and stick with the group, okay?”

“Okay... I guess,” Nathan still sounds uncertain but no longer protests. You gather up your supplies and pack your bag, your handgun and the black pills carefully hidden in your pants. The others follow your example and the group is ready to move after only half an hour.

That afternoon, you and the others stop to rest in a clearing. The woods feel ominous, like it had the day before. You feel uneasy, like something bad is about to happen soon.

Nathan offers to take first watch while the rest of you get a few hours sleep. Laurie joins him unsurprisingly. You feel exhausted from walking all day and hope the nap will ease your mind.

“So what’re you gonna do with the pills?” Roger keeps his voice low, “If you are not using them, I might try one. Just to see what it does. If you’re okay with sharing, that is.”

>"Wait until we reach town. It's too risky to put military grade drugs in your system right now."
>"Actually, I wanted to be one of the two people to take watch."

BECAUSE WE HAVE A FUCKING GUN.

Not that it'll do anything. My question earlier about whether or not Skinwalker had cold skin was to make sure that it wasnt just wearing his skin. We're dealing with something that can manipulate its own flesh, or the flesh of others, or maybe just put up an illusion. Either way, it's unlikely that a bullet will hurt it. We should act as if a gun is just a means of distraction at best.

By the way, what do you all think about the drug? If Roger is well-informed, it'll improve our physical capabilities. We'd be able to effectively repel if not murder Skinwalker. Also, what if the town has been turned/replaced too? We'd definitely need to be superhuman'd then.
>>
>>3013002
"If it bleeds, we can kill it." And it likely bleeds.

>>3012998
How many pills are there though? I feel it might be prudent to let Roger have one, just to see what it does. Though going to sleep and giving him the pill sounds mighty dangerous.
>I’m not doing any myself, not here at least, but you can have one when we take over watch.
>Tell Nathan to wake you up if *anything* suspicious or weird happens. "Hey man, I know you like Laurie, but could you keep a clear head until we reach civilization? We're deep in the wounds, so I don't want any of us taking any chances. We stick together, you get me?"

Nathan doesn't know about the gun, but it'll be best if it's kept as a last resort, maybe like the pills.

>>
>>3013022
This IS a resort. From what was described earlier, this should be the only rest back we'll be taking before reaching town. If Skinwalker attacks us, not only will the gun make a loud enough noise to wake others, but also possibly harm the Skinwalker.

"Laurie, when Cody returned, did you notice anything strange about him?” You address Laurie instead of Nathan, “As in how he pronounced your name right for the first time, or how he spoke as if he suddenly gained fifty IQ points?"

“It is not uncommon for someone to adapt their speech pattern,” Laurie replies, her voice gentler than Nathan’s, “Especially if they are a fast learner. But I must agree with the others that you are being unnecessarily paranoid, John. Perhaps you should rest for a while and allow your mind the chance to recover its clarity.”

“Nathan, you don't think it's strange that after the night Cody was acting like someone else, he eliminated our only means of travel for a day and a half, thereby isolating us?" You turn back to Nathan, disappointedly realizing that Laurie won’t be any help.

“Ya, he was acting weird, but at least he wasn’t being an obnoxious prick like you,” Nathan crosses his arms, “And you know what? I was beginning to like the new Cody, up until he lost his mind with the whole drama with you and Veronica. But I guess you’re actually enjoying all this, aren’t you? Being a control freak and bossing everyone around.”

"I'm bossing everyone around because, believe it or not, I actually give a shit what happens to you guys,” You realize that your voice is getting heated as well, “But if that threatens your 'masculine pride', tell me so I know not to trust you with my life by taking a nap while some psychopath is loose in the woods. I brought us here, and I mean to get us back. Even Cody, if we run into that bastard again."

“If there’s a psychopath among us, I would put good money that it’s you,” Nathan tightens his fist, “Cody’s a douche, we all know that. It’s fucked up that he screwed the rest of us over to get back at you and Veronica. But at least he isn’t a total creep like you.”

“Guys, calm down!” Roger raises his voice, “Fuck, I hate being the voice of reason, but yelling at each other in the middle of the woods doesn’t get us anywhere.”

You struggle to maintain your composure, Nathan’s words getting under your nerve. You wonder if you should try to keep the group together or just punch him in the face.

Character development!

Whatever you guys choose, I'd just like to stick this in. Also, can we use the drug now? Although I initially voted that we don't touch it yet, QM's mentioned it several times since the thread began and I'm really curious. Not like we have much to lose now.

Also, no one around Cody was using the standard of vocabulary the skinwalker used. He had nothing to adapt to. That wasn't speech adaption. Should we mention this?

Ah, forgot about that. Thanks anon.

I'm thinking we should chuck this in for character development

>"Believe it or not, Nathan, I'm not like my great-great grandfather. I'm no control freak."

and then accept the criticism because, iconic horror film stupidity aside, they're making a fair criticism about us. we must seem a little tense. but only because we decided to camp with fucking strangers. never camp with strangers. then step close until John's head is nearly touching Nathan's and say in a low, angry voice because testosterone:

>"But okay. Let's say I'm a control freak. I still hope you survive the night, because if someone innocent died when I had the opportunity to prevent it, I'll never be able to look myself in the mirror. Fucking twat."

And spit at his feet.

And go to bed? Or do we stay awake?
>>

>And spit at his feet.
Okay maybe no spitting. That's just barbaric.
>>
>>3013609
I vote no to the spitting and above all we should definitely try to keep the group together.

Basically this:

>I understand that you’re upset, Nathan, but we need to stay together and help each other.
>>
>>3013487
>>If you think I’m being a control freak, you can leave and do your own thing. Others can follow you too

It's uncharacteristic. John's not an eloquent diplomat or a slimy politician. To suddenly do a 180 after

>ou struggle to maintain your composure, Nathan’s words getting under your nerve. You wonder if you should try to keep the group together or just punch him in the face.

>>3013606
this was supposed to channel the character while attempting to garner the same result as diplomacy—through not being diplomatic. imagine it.

we exchange the last words of this little argument and we accept things as they are. it's not like Nathan's retaliation is a life or death confrontation. they're just boys arguing. not a big deal. Roger's intervention, above all, gives us an opportunity to end the argument like this.

“You’re being a dick for no reason, Nathan,” Veronica steps in to defend you, “John acts weird sometimes, but he’s actually a pretty good dude.”

"You're just fucking John cause his dad's loaded,” Nathan turns to Veronica, “Even though he’s clearly an obsessive control freak, with the personality and social awareness of a cardboard box. Cody might be a piece of shit, but you’re the shallowest slut I know, Veronica.”

"Fuck you, Nathan!" Veronica loses her temper, “You’re judging us when you don’t even know either of us. And just for the record, John and I never fucked.”

“You really expect us to believe that?” Nathan sounds mocking, “You’re the girl that has cheated on every single boyfriend she’s ever had. Even the teachers know you are a slut. Didn’t you blow the old math teacher to get an ‘A’?”

“No, I actually fucking studied for that,” Veronica grits her teeth, “Back me up here, Laurie. And tell your new boyfriend that he’s being an absolute cunt!”

Laurie whispers something in Nathan’s ears and he nods in agreement. Somehow you doubt that she offered a glowing support for Veronica. There seems to be a lot of hidden jealousy and resentment between all these so-called ‘friends’.

[1/2]
>>
>>3014283
“Laurie already told me how you used her for her notes,” Nathan says, “That you’re a selfish manipulative bitch who only cares about herself. You don’t know anything about John, other than the fact that he has a nice car, do you? You’ll cheat on him the moment someone richer comes in the picture.”

“Well did Laurie tell you about her crush on Cody?” Veronica sounds a little hurt, “She has been crushing on him for ages, but that asshole never even bothered to remember her name. Never acted nice to her either, well not until they started talking last night. Didn’t you notice how worried she got when Cody was missing? See Laurie’s just settling for you, Nathan. If Cody ever asks her out, she’ll drop you that second!”

“Guys, can we please move on from the high school drama?” Roger tries to calm everyone down, “I’m way too high to act like the responsible adult here, but we’re in the middle of the woods. There’s no phone signal and it’s getting dark. We need to help each other out, watch our backs, until we’re out of here.”

“Laurie and I are leaving.” Nathan ignores him, “I’m not gonna stand out here taking orders from the rich white kid that can’t stop bragging about all the blood money his slave trading grandpas left behind. Fucking paranoid control freak!”

"Believe it or not, Nathan, I'm not like my great-great grandfather. I'm no control freak," You step forward and say in a low, angry voice, "But okay. Let's say I'm a control freak. I still hope you survive the night, because if someone innocent died when I had the opportunity to prevent it, I'll never be able to look myself in the mirror. Fucking twat."

Nathan and you stare daggers at each other, your heads nearly touching. You wonder if he’ll stand down and agree to stay with the group, or if he’ll punch you in the face and leave together with Laurie. Nathan’s taller and stronger than you, so it can end badly if you fight.

“Get the fuck out of my face, man!” Nathan takes a swing at you before you have the chance to back away. Your knees collapse and you fall roughly to the ground. You have an average build, whereas Nathan has the tall muscular build of an athlete. This fight was over before it even started.

“Dude, calm the fuck down!” Roger steps between you and Nathan, “Look I get it. You want to spend time with your new girlfriend and don’t want John to boss you around. I also get that you’re pissed at Cody and need to vent. But punching John in the face was not cool, dude!”

“Oh fuck… he’s bleeding,” Veronica helps you to a seated position and examines your face, she touches your face gently and tries to stop the nosebleed, her hands are soft but it still hurts like hell, “What the fuck was that, Nathan!”

Nathan looks regretful, perhaps even ashamed that he went this far. Laurie touches his shoulder in a sympathetic manner but stays silent. After a while, the two of them pick up their bags, gather some supplies and start leaving without saying another word to the rest of you.

"I don't care if you think I'm a control freak, Nathan. But if you and Laurie get hurt because you were too selfish to control your ego, that'll be entirely on you," You tell Nathan just before he’s out of earshot. He doesn’t answer or meet your eyes, walking away with Laurie at his side.

“Thanks for looking out for me, Veronica,” You feel glad to have her with you, “And thanks for being the voice of reason, Roger.”

“I regret it already,” Roger sighs, “The guys who act like the voices of reason are always the first ones to die. The wolves don’t want us around, man. They want the sheep, the ones easy to manipulate and lead to the slaughterhouse.”

“Argh… get over yourself, Roger,” Veronica rolls her eyes, “This is just dumb football players swinging their dicks around and hurting others. Cody and Nathan are just boys… it’s not like there’s some monster out to get us!”

You keep silent and pray that Veronica is right.

“How do you feel now, John?” Veronica asks you some time later. The sun already set and the woods look haunting in the dark.

“Head hurts,” You reply, “Still feel like throwing up. But a little better than before, thanks for asking.”

“Glad to hear that,” Veronica smiles, “Hey you wanna cuddle? Not asking you to have sex when you have a concussion, but we can sleep together for a while. Y’know, Roger’s actually kinda dependable when he’s not high, he can keep watch for now.”

>Sorry Veronica, but there should be two people keeping watch all the time.

“Nathan was right, y’know,” Veronica says after some time, her voice serious, “I am a shallow person. I asked you to come here because of your dad’s car, tried to fuck you when I barely know you. But now that I’ve gotten to know you… I think I’m starting to fall for you. Does that make any sense?”

“Okay, that is pretty fucking weird,” Veronica laughs, then kisses you on the lips, just a light peck, “But it’s also kinda cute. Only cause I know you though, another girl might’ve gotten a restraining order at that.”

“Uh-huh, but I don’t think I could be this honest with another girl,” You reply.

“I know,” Veronica continues in a more serious tone, “I’m not thinking anything that long-term, John. We’re both in high school, nowhere near old enough to be thinking about kids or the end of our lives. I like you and I think we’ll be good together. But stuff like marriage or kids are too far away.”

“You’re a lot more mature than most people give you credit for,” You shift your body to make Veronica more comfortable, “More mature than I'm at least. I fucked up today, that whole thing with Nathan could’ve ended better if I hadn’t screwed up.”

“Hey, none of us is perfect,” Veronica hugs you a little tighter, “I’ve done a lot of fucked up things in life. Made a lot of mistakes and probably still making them. But it feels nice being with you like this. Better than how most first dates go at least.”

“You know, Nathan’s a douche, but he was right about one thing,” You tell Veronica when the two of you feel more comfortable, “We don’t know much about each other, do we? Maybe we should get to know each other better before we commit to a relationship. How about we spend tonight talking, see if we have things in common or not.”

“Makes sense,” Veronica smiles, “Hey, don’t get mad at me for asking, but I’m kinda curious. Have you been with anyone else before? Don’t worry, I won’t judge you either way!”

“No, I’m a virgin,” You feel your cheeks redden, “But you’ve probably guessed it already, with how awkward I’ve been with you.”

“Hey I won’t judge you if you don’t judge me,” Veronica smiles and snuggles with you. You spend the next hour talking about your interests, hobbies and plans for the future.

“Someone help!” You hear a bloodcurdling scream in the distance. You get out of the sleeping bag as fast as you can and grip your dad’s handgun.

You move as fast as you can, but you're still too late. Your stomach sinks when you find Roger, lying dead in a pool in his own blood, his throat ripped open. His face frozen in fear and his eyes terrified by what they had seen last.

"Oh god!" Veronica clutches your arm, she's shaking in shock, her face pale and her teeth chattering, "Roger's dead. John, tell me this isn't really happening!"

You had hoped that your suspicions are wrong, that you're just being paranoid like the others suggested. But seeing Roger dead, all your suspicions are now confirmed.

Your knuckles have turned white from how hard you gripped your gun. Veronica desperately holds on to you, sobbing like a little girl.

>Calm down, Vi, everything will be all right, I promise.

>Calm down, Vi, I don't know who or what did this, but I won't let them hurt you.

>Don't lose your nerve, Veronica, we need to keep our heads straight if we want to make it out of here alive.

“Don't lose your nerve, Veronica,” You try to calm her down, “We need to keep our heads straight if we want to make it out of here alive.”

Veronica nods, but still looks terrified. You can’t really blame here, the dead body of a classmate isn’t something she expected to see here.

“What’re we going to do?” Veronica holds on to you like her life depends on it, “We can’t call the police, there’s no signal. Should we make a run for it?”

“No, we need to wait this out until dawn. If we travel now, it can ambush us,” You reply. You don’t explain what it is and Veronica doesn’t press either, perhaps too afraid of the answer.

You’ve never fired a bullet before in your life. You just need to remove the safety and pull the trigger, right? At least that’s how it works in movies.

What scares you most is the fact that whatever killed Roger has to be extremely fast. It took you less than a minute to reach Roger, but that thing was already gone. Perhaps it had retreated back in the woods, watching you this very second from the shadows.

******

Half an hour passes. Veronica has somewhat calmed down, but you notice that she’s still shuddering every few seconds. You’re on the edge too, afraid of what’s to come next.

You hear footsteps coming out of the woods. You tense and grip your gun, ready to pull the trigger the moment that thing comes out.

After a few seconds, Laurie comes out of the woods.

“I am so glad that I have found you,” Laurie says, “Cody attacked us some time after we had left your company. Nathan was injured in the attack and he has lost a significant amount of blood since. It is not possible for someone of my frame to carry him. Can you please come with me, John?”

>Cody killed Roger. If he had attacked Nathan, I’d say he’s dead by now too. I’m sorry, Laurie, but it’ll be better if you stay with us till morning.

>Okay, I’m coming. Stay here, Veronica, and find somewhere to hide. We’ll come back with Nathan once we find him.

>If Nathan had stayed together with us, none of this would have happened. I’m sorry, but I’m not risking my life for that guy.

>If Nathan had stayed together with us, none of this would have happened. I’m sorry, but I’m not leaving Veronica unguarded.

Pretty much this she has the weird speech patterns to.
>>
>>3014963
No, that's actually close to Laurie's speech patterns. But if you want empirical evidence that it isn't Laurie who we're dealing with, think about the scenario. It said Nathan is heavily bleeding out, but enough time has passed for Nathan and Laurie to cross sufficient distance that we wouldn't have heard their screams anyhow. And yet, "Laurie", knowing Nathan is bleeding out quickly, decides to backtrack a mile or two in order to find us when she has absolutely no experience with wayfinding, and moreover, given the conditions Laurie describes, Nathan would have died from bleeding out in the time it took Laurie to find us? Foolishness. Laurie's supposed to be the one who knows things. She wouldnt have made that mistake.
>>
>>3014963
Also
"someone of my frame"
A normal person would have said "me", if, ya know, they weren't wearing someone else's body.
>>
>>3014973

>>
By the way, can we finally use the gun and shoot this fucker? We shouldn't bandy words when we are certain this is our skinwalker. We're into late game now. We won't look like a psychopath.
>>
>>3014988
I think it may be more prudent to swallow some Russian military-grade stamina pills in just a moment. I'm afraid a gun won't do much at range with the speed whatever it is has. It will have to be the killing blow.
>>
>>3014996
Earlier anon said that to survive in slasher films you refrain from drugs and sex.

But I don't know. The idea that thus drug may actually be something of an enhancer is actually, coincidentally, supported by both the mystery surrounding it's sale by the drug dealer and Roger's information about how the drug is named after the super soldier project and it was smuggled under the pretense of it being a sex drug. Crypt has also confronted us with the decision to use it several times throughout the thread, which makes it kind of tempting. Maybe it will help us.

However, it's too late to use it. The skinwalker is fast. In the time it takes for our body to respond, adapt, and recuperate from whatever the drug does to us, if it really is a super soldier drug, the skinwalker will be quick enough to lunge forward and slice our throat open.

I think the gun is our best bet, but only if we shoot without warning.
>>
>>3014996
I swear to god John is fucking worthless. This guy has no skills whatsoever.

I'd be more confident in using the gun if he's actually shot one before.
>>
>>3015008
John has MC privilege. That's the strongest power.
>>
>>3015018
Crypt doesn't care about MC privilege. If we (I) weren't being meta by at least a fraction, everyone would have died right now. Veronica would have been turned the first night, along with Cody. The rest would have been picked off quickly. In fact, if we were being completely loyal to John's character, he wouldn't be among the final two survivors atm.

Compared to dice we have to use, the DCs are consistently on the high end. It shows how incompetent John is. Are we even supposed to survive this quest? I feel like everyone's supposed to die. Speaking of which, there aren't many horror movies where main characters survive.

Depends on who you consider the main character. There are quite a few where the final survivor is the protagonist. But anyway, John is just a rich kid with a gun. Sometimes a gun is the other strongest power.
>>
>>3015036
“No,” You can sense that something is very wrong here, “You totter over to where we are with perfect memory of where we are, not out of breath or frantic that your boyfriend is bleeding out, and ask us to follow you into the woods?"

“I do not understand what you are trying to imply, John,” Laurie shakes her head, “But I am quite disappointed to learn that you would act so selfishly. Nathan is injured and requires your assistance, but you rather waste time interrogating me than to move and assist him. Veronica, you have been my friend for a very long time, have you ever known me to be dishonest or untrustworthy? If John is too self-serving to assist me, perhaps you can come with me in his stead?”

“Stay where you are, Vi,” You put yourself between Veronica and ‘Laurie’, “You know I just noticed something. You stopped talking to others after last night, only answering when spoken to. The only person you kept talking to was Nathan, but you only spoke in whispers. Were you telling him that he needs to ditch the rest of us and stop listening to the rich white kid? Did you put him against me and Veronica so our group was forced to split?”

“I do not know what you are talking about, John,” Laurie replies, “Our conversations covered a myriad range of topics. But there would be no reason for me to cause discord amongst our number.”

“Right,” You remove the safety of the gun, “I can see why you stopped talking to others, your speech pattern and vocabulary is too old-fashioned to escape notice. Unless someone’s too madly in love to care about it, they would notice after a while that you don’t exactly sound like a modern teenager. Maybe you are not as fast a learner as you think you are.”

“Trust me, I am learning, John,” Laurie says, a smile slowly forming on her face, “So what do you think am I?”

[1/2]
>>
>>3015037
Not if you cant shoot.

btw Main character, protagonist, and hero are three different terms that describe three different things. Main characters are like John, who is experiencing this story. The protagonist, arguably, is often the cause of this horror: the metaphorical or literal monster.
>>
>>3015043
Something that feeds on humans and gains their appearance and memories,” You point the gun at it, “You were confined here for a long time, but Cody being a dumb-ass let you out somehow. You killed Cody, wore his skin and came to our cabin. Last night, you acted friendlier to Laurie than Cody has ever had. You asked her to meet you somewhere private, didn’t you? Then you killed her and stole her face. You slashed the tires and sabotaged the engines so we couldn’t leave, while you took us apart one by one.”

“Bravo, it seems there is much I can learn from you, John,” The thing pretending to be Laurie grins, an impossible grin that splits its face in half. Its jaw unhinges, revealing a set of unnaturally sharp fangs. Its limbs begin to stretch, turning into twisted elongated things that no longer resemble human arms or legs. It gets down on all fours and silently approaches you and Veronica.

“Oh god,” Veronica is petrified in fear. You point the gun at the monster, praying that it’s not impervious to bullets.

It has unnaturally long limbs, so waiting till it's a couple feet away can end up costing us. Unless you are thinking about John sacrificing his life to save Veronica.
>>
>>3015105
I actually don't mind but that's pretty selfish from Veronica's point of view. Alone, the poor girl will never return to normalcy after being the sole survival of a total, terrifying tpk.

What would be the DC, OP?

And what do all of you other anons think? Leave this to fate to determine if we survive with Veronica, or increase our chances a little and be courageous by sacrificing ourself to make sure we kill the skinwalker and at the very least save Veronica?
>>
>>3015110
Who the fuck is actually suggesting we kill ourselves? That's fucking dumb lol.
>>
>>3015112
Think business.

If we fail to kill it as is, we lose two lives.

Sacrifice ourself to kill it, and we lose only one life.

It is pragmatic.
>>
>>3015114
Pragmatism is inherently pointless if it kills you.
>>
Consensus seems to be to protect Veronica, which I'll go for. How about... Whisper to Vi to shine a flashlight. It's nocturnal, the bright light will have an effect and maybe buy a split second to steady a shot, not to mention it's night and you need to see to shoot straight.
>>
>>3015112
Unless you think we should go for the 15 DC. I don't mind, honestly. I'd rather us both come out alive than leave her to weather the trauma alone.

>>3015116
You don't understand what pragmatism is, or you are strictly self-concerned. I think it terms of total yield. Sacrificing ourself to save one life rather than allowing both lives to be terminated is pragmatic.

Pragmatism is extracting as much as you realistically can from a situation.
>>
>>3015122
I agree. Though it's stalking toward us right now and I don't know if she has enough time to get one and flip the switch. It's unlikely that she has one in hand. Not once has any post mentioned a flashlight.
>>
>>3015123
It is not very practical to kill ourselves. It's much more useful to us to take the path that gives us a chance to not die horribly.
>>
>>3015132
And which path is that? Which path will likely result in John and Veronica surviving?

“Vi, I need you to use the flashlight on your phone,” You shout at Veronica, “Can’t get a clear shot unless there’s more light.”

Your voice pulls Veronica out of her daze and she does as you ask. The light isn’t enough to blind the monster, but it does make it easier for you to see your target.

The first bullet you fire misses, but the second one hits its mark. The thing from the woods howls in agony, a rasping sound resembling neither man nor beast. It extends its long limbs to rip you apart and you barely avoid the twisted razor-sharp claws.

Veronica holds the light as you asked. Her hand firm even though the rest of her body is trembling in fear. The light makes it considerably easier for you to shoot the monster, while its movements get slower as more and more bullets penetrate its flesh.

Empty. The last of your bullets reaches the monster. There’s no time to reload and you desperately move out of its reach. You grit your teeth, prepared to lunge at the monster and protect Veronica with your life if it comes down to it.

But there’s no need for that. The monster collapses to the ground, its flesh melting. There are neither bones nor blood. Whatever that thing was, it was never human.

[1/2]
>>
>>3015787
“It’s over, we’re alive,” You comfort Veronica, as she buries her face in your chest and sobs like a scared child. The monster might be dead, but it will haunt her dreams for the rest of her life. You hug her gently and whisper words to soothe her.

“What are we going to tell the police?” Veronica asks after she calms down a little. The two of you hold hands as you walk back to town. You don’t stop to rest even once, not until you leave the woods forever behind.

“Roger was killed by some kind of feral animal,” Your voice sounds hollow and robotic, but Veronica still holds on to you tightly, like you are the only thing keeping her safe, the only thing keeping her sane, “We don’t know what happened to the others.”

The monster’s flesh had melted after it died. You suspect that it had consumed the bodies of Cody, Laurie and Nathan completely. So even if the police search for the dead bodies, they will find nothing resembling human. At least Roger’s parents will have a body to bury.

You don’t know what the future holds for you and Veronica. Maybe you will go on dates and get to know each other better, a proper relationship will blossom between the two of you, and you’ll eventually get married and have kids together.

Or maybe the whole relationship thing won’t work out and you’ll break up after only a few weeks of dating. You don’t know what your future holds, but you still feel thankful to have this moment, where both you and Veronica are alive and safe in each other’s arms.

******

“Stay with me, John, please?” Veronica hugs you tightly, her voice pleading. No matter how many years pass, she’ll never recover from last night’s ordeal, at least not entirely. You also doubt that she will ever find the courage to go anywhere near the woods again.

“I’m here, Vi,” You ruffle her hair and kiss her forehead, you know that you can’t erase her trauma, nor protect her from everything that is to come, but perhaps you can face your fears together, “As long as you need me.”

WAIT. But what would the drugs have done?

Also, thank you so much, Crypt. I enjoyed this quest, and your story had a lyrical consistency to bind it from post to post. It's a rare cohesion that I rarely see in quests.

Just, maybe for main characters you run in future quests, don't set everything in the beginning. Established skills can maybe be the actions players consistently perform well, "well" in terms of coming from them rather than dice rolls.

>>3015790
Damn. Wasn't expecting it to be that easy. Hell of a ride though.

Hell yeah, John. Good ride, OP. Thanks for sticking with us.

It's good but I'm still curious what that mystery drug would do to us. The wendigo seemed too easy to kill.

Wndingo's don't turn into people. They have stone-hard skin and fest on human flesh, being created through cannibalism.

Alternate Ending / Post-credits Scene

Sheriff Hopper hates going into the woods. The place always gives him the creeps, like something is staring at him from behind the trees. Even the old Indians stayed away from this place and called it the domain of evil spirits.

But duty calls. It has been over a week since those four teenagers went camping in the woods and never came back. The two teenagers that came back are either silent or evasive about what happened to their friends.

Sheriff Hopper doubts that anything bad happened to the other kids, since there are no wolves or other predatory animals here. Maybe they are doing what most teenagers do when they are in the rebellious phase. Doing drugs, having sex and making their parents worried. A firm talking to or a night in the lockup should set them straight.

Sheriff Hopper hits the break when he sees someone walking out of the woods. It was a petite young girl, brown haired and wearing broken glasses. One of the missing kids.

“What the hell happened to you?” Sheriff Hopper looks her over. There are holes in her dress, like she had been riddled with bullets.

“Please, I have become separated from my friends,” The girl sounds oddly calm and Sheriff Hopper wonders if she in shock, “Can you please take me back to civilization? It has been a long time since I have been in the company of other humans.”

“Ah ya,” Sheriff Hopper doesn’t know why, but he feels uneasy, like a primal part of him is sensing a predator approaching, “Are you sure you are alright?”

Trust me, I am fine.” The girl smiles as she gets inside the car.

The screen fades to black.

Well that's about it for this quest. I'm going to sleep. Leave your questions, I'll try to answer them in detail when I wake up.

Not a Wendigo...more likely a /k/ Skinwalker...or a "fleshgait" as the autists will scream.

Supernatural, but can be hurt by bullets (though not killed, or not confirmed killed), steals people's skins/bodies, etc

The Drugs

If we took the drugs, it would increase our stamina and heighten our senses. If we fucked Veronica after taking one of the pills, she would say that it was the best sex she has ever had in her life (and she has fucked a lot of football players). We would enjoy it more too due to our heightened senses.

However, it would also take away our ability to sleep. We would stay awake for days, slowly growing more paranoid and distrustful. Our heightened senses would warp our perceptions and make us see things that aren’t there. We would lose our inhibitions, turning more rapey or even cannibalistic unless something is done. In other words, we might have turned into a different kind of monster.

My initial inspiration for the drugs came from an old creepy pasta called The Russian Sleep Experiment – http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/The_Russian_Sleep_Experiment, but it would function differently in this quest.

Another idea was genetic memory. Like the drugs would make us remember the things our ancestors did, flashbacks about them being abusive to slaves, having our bloodline cursed, learning about the evil spirits of this land etc.

The Sequel

Slasher films don’t exactly have a stellar track record when it comes to sequels. The Thing in the Woods 2: Revenge of the Thing, The Thing in the Woods 3: The Woodening, The Thing in the Woods 4: The Final Chapter, The Things in the Woods 5: We Need More Money, The Thing in the Woods XXX: The Porn Parody… would probably all suck.

The alternate ending was a play on post-credit scenes slasher films use to keep option open for sequels. Maybe if a sequel was made, it would follow the monster going to a city, taking humans apart one by one etc. Or maybe it would try to hunt down John / Veronica, or maybe their kids when they are teenagers.

I tried to keep the relationship between Johan and Veronica open-ended. It could be that they broke up after dating for a couple weeks, their personalities not matching. Or it could be that they stayed together, got married once they are both adults and had several kids together. Up to the readers to decide what happened to them after the quest.

>If we fucked Veronica after taking one of the pills

>>
>>3017397
Well the sequel in my mind isn't about thing in the wood 2.0. The main characters will still be John and Vi but the setting will be an abandoned asylum, or a strange town or some other cliche slasher setting. The enemy this time would be a crazed serial killer or something.
>>
>>3017397
A sequel set in John's house. Veronica is staying over at his house when the ghosts of his ancestor's murdered slaves possesses someone to hunt him down in his own mansion.
>>
>>3017397
No no the REAL sequel. The one that takes place 40 years later and we pretend the other ones don't exist. John and Veronica aren't together anymore but they do have a child, our new protagonist.
>>
>>3016356
>What wouldve happened if we didnt go?
If we didn't go, it would be – (1) A quick ending where John learns that the others disappeared / got killed by a serial killer, (2) An entirely different quest where John has to fend off a supernatural threat alone in his home, while the characters have a lot of fun camping.

>Could we have saved anyone else?
All six characters had the possibility of dying or surviving.
John – If he got into a fight with Nathan in first day and was knocked out (DC: 15), he would be taken by the monster instead of Cody. We would have an option to play as any of the other five characters, with ‘John’ as the primary antagonist.
Cody – If we went with him to the abandoned summer camp, we might have saved his life. But Nathan would probably get possessed in his place. He might have gotten a Steve Harrington-esque redemption arc.
Veronica – She was supposed to be killed by ‘Cody’ that night. The monster would then wear her face and manipulate John the next morning. But one anon wrote ‘keep her away from Cody’ and I had to come up with a scenario where she survives.
I fully expected her to die, to be honest. I’d made her character unlikable early on, with the whole slutty high school cheerleader archetype, and mentions of how she cheats on her boyfriends and uses others. All death flags when you are in a slasher film.
But then I put a throwaway line to make her more sympathetic before her character is killed off. And somehow she turns into the main love interest and survives the slasher tropes against all odds. Also, some anons were really genre-savvy when it came to the ‘sex equals death’ trope, which increased both her and John’s odds of survival.
Roger – He might have survived if we stayed with him instead of Veronica and rolled well. But in that case, Veronica (or John) might have been the one to be attacked. P.S. His character was inspired by Shaggy Rogers from Scooby-Doo and the stoner guy from Cabin in the Woods.
Nathan – If we got into a fight with him on the first day, beat him up and left him there, he might have been taken instead of Cody. He was the third to die, so at least he managed to overcome the ‘Black Guy Dies First’ trope of slasher films. He might have survived if we befriended him on the first day or if John was the one dating Laurie instead.
Laurie – Her whole character was based on the ‘Final Girl’ trope – the nice virgin bookworm who would survive till the end. But I also considered the twist where the final survivor is actually the monster in disguise, the plot point I used in the alternate ending. That said, if we befriended her on the first day, she might have survived and be the main love interest.

The Endings

>Ask Veronica to use her smartphone as a flashlight, keep shooting at the thing until it stops moving.
This was the canon ending. But if we had failed the roll, both John and Veronica would die. The alternate ending would be the canon epilogue, where ‘Laurie’ would be hailed as the final girl who survived the Massacre at Red Lake, while she secretly searches for her next victims.

>Tell Veronica to run, keep shooting at the thing until she gets away, sacrificing your own life to give her a chance.
If this was chosen, Veronica would survive and manage to escape the forest, but John would die fighting the monster. Veronica would be traumatized and cry about what happened to the boy she'd fallen in love with. The epilogue would be the sheriff finding ‘John’ a couple weeks later.

>Ask Veronica to use her smartphone as a flashlight, shoot at the thing and then start running, leaving Veronica behind.
If this was chosen, John would survive, but he would forever feel guilty for what he did. He would skip town and live in fear for as long as he leaves. The canon epilogue would be the sheriff finding a blonde cheerleader in the forest, who would tell him that she needs to find her asshole boyfriend who left her behind.
>>
I'm down for any sequel if our main characters return. We worked really hard to save them. Bring on the UFOs, aliens, inbred families, serial killers, and mutants.
>>
I just want a different quest. We don't need to keep these characters. John is really not that interesting anyways.
>>3017474
I would have loved to see us beat up Nathan against all odds. Suddenly reveal that John is actually a badass martial artist.

The Monster

I personally prefer horror stories where some things are left unexplained. If you give a scientific explanations or tragic backstories to your monsters, it normalizes them and takes away the ‘unknown’, making them less scary.

I would leave it up to you to decide what that thing was –skinwalker, goatman, wendigo, yee naaldlooshii, fleshgait, alien parasite, demon, evil spirit… whatever you find the scariest. I had even briefly considered making John the actual villain of the quest, with him suffering from paranoid delusions and seeing monsters where there aren’t any.

Since you guys picked the “Sounds like a nice place. Never heard anything bad about it” option for the location, I had the chance to work with the unknown, instead of creating backstories for serial killers, cultists or aliens.

>making John the actual villain of the quest, with him suffering from paranoid delusions and seeing monsters where there aren’t any
That would've been dope as fuck if written well, or very mediocre if not written well. I've noticed that unreliable narrator stuff is hard for a lot of writers to pull off.
>>
>>3017397
I prefer a "sequel" to be something completely unrelated to this quest, with maybe a few throwaway hints that they are somehow connected. Not sure why anons are demanding one. The ending was satisfying.

>>3018011
It was a joke that some of the other anons took seriously.

Thanks for the compliments, it was my pleasure.

Running this one-shot over Halloween turned out to be a lot of fun, I might run other horror / mystery / survival one-shots here again at a later time.

For now, I should be getting back to my main quest.

See you all later!
